Welcome to the Bull Sale and AI sire edition of Top Stock.

This March issue highlights the fall and winter show circuit, an extremely competitive run that culminated in the selection of the Supreme champions at Agribition.

We congratulate Miller Wilson Angus, winners of no less than three Agribition supreme championships, on their achievement and interview first time Supreme exhibitors Enright Farms on their victory with EF Titan on page 76.

Though the open shows continued to be hugely competitive, the junior shows were exciting and stronger than ever before.

We felt these hard-working Juniors needed a bigger piece of the limelight, so we have significantly expanded our coverage of the junior portions of the fall shows. Top Stock is the only place so find such complete coverage, across all breeds, and we are proud to present such a strong group of youth exhibitors.

Though this spring's show run will be slightly smaller than previous years, the new Cody Sibbald Legacy Classic will debut in March with an amazing pool of prizes that includes $20,000 in scholarships. We recently caught up with Lance Leachman, a regular on the microphone on the Canadian circuit, for his thoughts before he judges the Classic. One of the most astute young cattlemen you will meet, his family's dedication to youth development and his appreciation of sound, functional cattle make him the perfect fit to sort this show (page 22).

Regular readers will find our third feature to be a marked departure from our regular subject matter. On page 36 we interview Dylan Sher, whose forthcoming documentary addresses the common misconceptions of an urban public increasingly interested in the source of their food. At Top Stock, we pride ourselves on covering the niche of show cattle news, but we realize our relationship with those outside of agriculture may ultimately determine how/what we can do with the animals in our care. National Gelbvieh show sees entries increase The Canadian Gelbvieh Association recently held its national show at the 2016 Canadian Western Agribition in Regina.

2016 saw the breed achieve a 30% entry increase with a record attendance of 114 head of Gelbvieh exhibited, up from 80 head in 2015. New and previous exhibitors from across Western Canada welcomed six exhibitors from the USA and the American Gelbvieh Assocation. Five of those six new exhibitors were first time exhibitors at this event travelling from North Dakota and South Dakota. A Balancer show was also held with 18 entries.

Saskatchewan’s Lance Leachman talks judging teams, EPDs, and the importance of friendships in the beef industry

L

ance Leachman’s destiny was tied to the beef industry long before he was born. In 1967, his paternal grandparents established Big Gully Farm, a purebred Hereford operation. Prior to this, his family raised commercial cattle. Leachman’s father, Buddy, was raised at this farm north of Maidstone, Saskatchewan. His mother, Frances, grew up on a nearby Hereford operation, Misty Valley Farm. Leachman and his brother grew up on his family’s farm, and that’s where this story begins. Today, Leachman, his wife, Shari, and his mother run the 3,000-acre farm, raising around 150 purebred horned and polled Hereford females. Shari owns Ultrabeef Ultrasound Services to assess carcass merit and serves as the western Canadian Sales Representative for LiveAuctions.tv.

Like many young cattle producers, Leachman found that growing up on his family’s farm helped him develop the characteristics that have served him in his career thus far. “It teaches you life skills, as far as work ethic, determination—the reality of

circumstances growing up on a farm and experiencing difficult or adverse scenarios, whether it be weather, market fluctuations or management of the cattle,” he explains.

At a young age, he learned the importance of “always trying to see it through and do as good a job as you can, and [realizing] that not everything is going to work out the way you want it to, but if you persevere, then you can get through it.” With this kind of upbringing, Leachman feels it was natural that he wanted to pursue a career in agriculture. “I had the same interests as my parents, and that developed when I was in 4-H and Junior Hereford activities,” he says. “That led to an interest in animals and animal science.”

Now, Leachman’s daily life revolves around the farm he was raised on, and he uses this as a platform to assist young people in developing the skills that contributed to his own early successes. “We host a youth cattle judging clinic and contest the first Saturday of October for anyone interested in developing their terminology, selection, oral reasons and understanding of performance data pertaining to cattle,” he notes. “We

have also initiated the Big Gully Farm Beef Cattle Learning Award to provide $1,500 to both a young man and woman interested in initiating a learning opportunity related to beef cattle.”

You’ll see the products of the Big Gully breeding program each year at the Canadian Western Agribition, the Leachmans’ sole stop on the show circuit.

The location of the event is key for marketing. “Regina’s an area that’s just far enough removed from us that there will be people we don’t know that can see our product, and I think there’s value obviously in that,” says Leachman. He also finds it a useful venue for competing with other cattle in the Hereford breed and beyond. “You’re able to make comparisons and simply see what levels of progress you’re making relative to everyone else.

I think there’s tremendous value in that, just knowing that you aren’t the best but you’re surrounded by breeders showing you, potentially, how you can improve.” Currently, they show only bulls 024

at Agribition to create more exposure for those that will be sold at their annual production sale, held the second Thursday in December. They prefer to keep their females “for development at home as brood cows, while maintaining contemporary group size through yearling age,” he says, and in the summer, they are happy to “[let] the cattle just work for themselves in the pasture.”

The pillars of the Big Gully program are the quality of their cattle and their customer service, and enhancing this is of the utmost importance to Leachman.

“We want to continue to always improve as far as customer service, the phenotypic quality of our animals and the genetic values of our animals from a data standpoint, whether it’s measuring carcass ultrasound or implementing genomic-enhanced EPDs” he explains.

to honestly assess what we do well and what we do poorly, then try to limit our deficiencies and improve areas that we think are weak.”

Part of this quest to increase quality is aided by the use of EPDs, something they’ve taken advantage of for many years.

EPDs, Leachman states, have helped his family to zero in on the strengths in their cattle and the traits their customers want. “For us, it just comes down to making Hereford cattle that are maternal, muscular, sound uddered and moderate framed” he says, “then combining that with the fact that we have put a high degree of selection emphasis on EPDs for a long time, and I think it’s starting to show through as far as the actual data that’s being collected on the cattle for a variety of traits.” The next step is “trying to implement genomic-enhanced EPDs, along with our already-reported data, to give our commercial customers a higher degree of accuracy at a younger age, in knowing the genetic merit of the animal.”

Leachman’s understanding of genetic quality in cattle is the result of a journey that took him to the United States after high school. Becoming interested in judging livestock, he states, came naturally by being part of the beef industry growing up.

“When you’re in 4-H, you have to select an animal every year, and that always intrigued me, trying to find the one I liked best or thought was the most useful,” he says. As a teenager, Leachman considered pursuing his education south of the 49th parallel.

“There were some young Hereford breeders that were a few years older than me that followed that avenue,” he recalls. Working for Colyer Herefords and Angus of Bruneau, Idaho, also presented the idea of pursuing collegiate livestock judging, as Kyle Colyer judged throughout college and introduced Leachman to some coaches. “I toured a couple of the universities and community colleges to try to see if it was something that would be a fit for me, and it was.”

Moving to another country for university was an adventure he didn’t want to miss out on. “I thought there were huge opportunities to capitalize on,” he says.

This experience was just what Leachman

was looking for, and he praises the quality of agricultural education he received. “The U.S. colleges are really applied in terms of their teaching, I think they do really nice job of making sure that kids get out and actually interact with producers, and maybe have more hands-on work with the livestock from an education standpoint.”

Leachman spent two years studying and judging at Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kansas, before transferring to Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. There, he was a member of the livestock judging team and completed his Bachelor of Animal Science and Industry degree, then set his sights further east.

Leachman’s experience competing on judging teams prompted him to further his education in animal science, and he headed to Blacksburg, Virginia, to obtain his Master’s degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, better known as Virginia Tech. There he coached three judging teams while attaining his degree.

FAVOURITE SHOW YOU’VE JUDGED

One thing I’ve always tried to live by is listen more than you speak. I’ve always been one that’s fairly quiet and reserved…but I want to learn from other people, so I think it’s important for me, at least, to always listen and ask questions more than you’re trying to talk or tell somebody else about yourself. I think that’s incredibly important, particularly at a young age, to soak up as much knowledge as you can and benefit from other people’s expertise that you haven’t accumulated already.

The 2015 Wodonga Hereford National Show and Sale in Australia…That would be due to the fact it was a 150-head, all-bull show followed by a sale that featured bulls who, phenotypically, were quite different in some regards to what I was used to, but were still elite within the country. The camaraderie amongst breeders and support of the show from people attending was exceptional.

“The other thing, I think, is that somebody’s always watching. It’s important to conduct yourself in a fashion, no matter where you’re at—a show, in public, with friends, or at home—that should be professional, humble, responsible, respectful. Realize that there’s always someone watching you that could potentially be impressed by you or be discouraged by you, based on what your behaviour might be.”

“Another one would be the National Western Stock Show Junior Hereford show in 2015…Just the fact that it was hosted in Denver. There’s a lot of tradition, and then with the excitement in the Hereford breed currently in the States, the quality of the young people and the livestock that’s displayed is remarkable.”

Breeding or market cattle, I really prioritize structural integrity, and I think that’s one criteria that many young people aren’t as critical of as they should be considering the longevity and foundation it lays for developing the cattle and the generations that follow. That’s one thing that’s really important to me. Past that, it’s simply the combination of performance, muscle, body dimension, composition, and balance…

When it comes down to it, sound structured cattle that are optimal-rather than extreme for a combination of traits have always appealed to me.”

My mom and dad, for the skills and work ethic that they implemented from a young age, and maintaining strict and rigid standards as far as how we needed to conduct ourselves and approach every day. As far as judging coaches, I had a junior college coach named Jeff Nemecek, and then in senior college I had two coaches; one was Scott Schaake, and the other being Brandon Callis… I think those were the ones that really set the standards for teaching me how to evaluate livestock, present reasons and try to conduct ourselves in the appropriate fashion if we had the opportunity to judge shows after college.”

FAVORITE SHOW DAY TIP I would say that just being realistic as far as your expectations for how the animal should do that particular day, so you have to be honest with yourself. Also, realizing if you have a day that doesn’t go as well as you want, that if you were happy with the animal when you took them to the show, you should sure be proud of taking them back home as well. If you’re confident in your breeding program and how you approach it, one day’s results really shouldn’t make you waver from what you’re doing.

“If you look at the industry, some of the most influential and successful people that have ever been involved in it came from very modest beginnings, as far as maybe the quality of their livestock or the success of their livestock initially.

Instead of getting discouraged, they had the passion and motivation to get better, and it was that drive that allowed them to enjoy tremendous success and impact.”

ALL TIME FAVORITE COW/BULL A bull that we purchased, KSU Bounty Hunter 611. That was a bull we purchased from Kansas State University in 2007 that I think really put us in a great position as far as the type of cattle that he sired. He was shown successfully, but more importantly consistently outbred himself and advanced our herd more than any sire has.

“There’s one that we didn’t raise or own ourselves: his name would be C-S Pure Gold 98170. He was a Hereford bull that was born in 1998 that I think had as big influence in correcting the type of Hereford cattle that were being produced at that time, in terms of enhancing muscle shape, volume and performance.”

Now, having returned home to take a larger role in his family’s operation, Leachman’s views on livestock judging have evolved based on his real-world experience. “When you go through the judging programs in the U.S., they’re very quality focused, and I think that’s one of their overlying demands—that the cattle be very attractive, very correct in terms of their design, and a lot of the American cattle probably do sacrifice a little bit of size, scale and performance.” He notes that when he returned home after studying in the United States, “I probably did focus on wanting to sell more females or have them be a bit more of that type. We have shifted to keeping most of our females to build the depth of our herd and bolster the maternal background and uniqueness of each potential bull to sell.

This spring, Leachman’s knowledge of beef conformation will be on display as he judges the Cody Sibbald Legacy Classic, taking place March 18-19 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. This event was “created to serve and promote youth in agriculture in memory of a fun, loving and inspiring young man,” the show organizers explain.

A highlight of the Legacy Classic is the $20,000 in scholarships that will be given out to competitors each year. Scholarships will be awarded in 13 different categories, including conformation, showmanship and an essay competition. As well, there will be a banquet and social on the Saturday night of the show. “For the future of the show and to replenish the scholarship fund, we have a bronze of Cody that has been created and donated by Ken Frederickson and Donny Peacock, a donation heifer from Compass Ranch and a Facebook auction,” say the organizers of this event. People are encouraged to

The show capacity is limited to 150 head, and, showing an overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic response by the 106 juniors that will be competing this year, was filled at the time of writing. “We are overwhelmed and honored by the support, (and) are excited to excel youth in agriculture. We are pleased to give back to the agricultural community who has shown us overwhelming support,” say the Sibbalds, who welcome all to attend the show. “We are hoping to raise awareness about the passion in youth and agriculture and to grow this passion into the future.”

Leachman is looking forward to judging this show, and applauds the motivation behind the creation of this special program honouring the memory of a young person.

The Legacy Classic also places a focus on the learning opportunities and friendships developed by competing in junior livestock competitions. It's programs such as this, Leachman continues, that highlight the importance of youth involvement in agriculture and the tight-knit nature of the Canadian beef industry as a community.

“Looking back I probably didn’t take advantage of building those relationships as much as I could have,” he recalls. “When I got back (from school) and started judging some shows, exhibiting and taking a greater role in our operation, I thought it was remarkable how many people I faintly remembered or had met that I’ve become good friends with since. I always wonder if I had been more outgoing when I was younger, if I could have developed those relationships or acquaintances at a younger age.

armers are often told to speak up, to tell their story, to be an “agvocate.�

This is defined as someone who promotes agriculture by contributing to the ongoing conversation on food production in a respectful, meaningful way. However, are

farmers reaching the urban consumer through their current agvocacy efforts?

Dylan Sher thinks not. In fact, the city boy-turned-aggie believes that the tension between farmers and consumers boils down to a misunderstanding.

“I know friends who buy organic because they want to support family farms,” he said, noting that they don’t realize that conventional farms are family farms, too.

The third-year agriculture business student at the University of Guelph has his sights set on being the mediator between these two groups through his “Before the Plate” project—a documentary about farming. He hopes to create something that is relatable to both rural and urban audiences.

Sher grew up in Richmond Hill, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto, and, strangely enough, he wanted to farm from a young

age. It all began at the private school he attended. It was home to gardens, sheep and a few chickens. He fondly remembers having science class out in the garden, and he first felt drawn to agriculture thanks to experiences like this. When the time came to pursue post-secondary education, Sher told his father that he wanted to farm, even though he wasn’t exactly sure how it would fit into his life. His dad responded by saying that he would have to go to school, and the best institution to attend would be the Ontario Agriculture College, a founding college of the University of Guelph.

“I had cookie-cutter ideas about agriculture,” said Sher, although he didn’t know this until he started his first year at school and working at a dairy farm one summer between his university studies. After asking his “aggie” classmates about their farms, he realized that some of his ideas were actually a “greatly skewed” perception about agriculture. He said that he also remembers feeling a bit lost compared to some of his aggie classmates because he didn’t even know how to drive a tractor.

Then one day, Sher had a light bulb moment. While working at the dairy farm, he took out his Smartphone and snapped a photo of the spotless milk house he’d just finished cleaning. He wanted to post the photo on Instagram to explain what was happening on the farm.

“I found myself in a unique position,” he said, remembering that he was more connected to the buzz of the city than a typical farmer. Searching to find his place within agriculture, he then decided to interview a few of his aggie friends, and then one thing lead to another. Overnight the idea morphed into “Before The Plate.”

About a week later, he met up with an old friend for coffee. Sher began to tell him about his project. His friend, a film student at the University of Toronto, offered to help. It didn’t take much convincing, as his friend had attended the same school as Sher and recalled classes in the garden and spending time with a few head of livestock.

The plan is to present the story about how food is produced in this country in a nonconfrontational way. Sher wants it to be “neutral,” featuring both conventional and organic farms, as well as large and smallscale operations; however, he explained, he wishes to emphasize the family farm and pride as the common theme between all of these types of operations.

The film will start in an urban setting, a restaurant in Toronto, and follow a plate of food all the way back to the farm, allowing viewers to see the entire foodchain process. While the film’s production is still in its infancy, Sher envisions the first scene will zoom into a steak representing half of the dinner plate.

Hit rewind and head back to the farm.

The beef side of the story will feature a cow-calf operation and a feedlot yard.

been presented to him growing up in the city. The three biggest public misconceptions facing agriculture today, he believes, are the overuse of pesticides, farmers being forced to buy GMO seeds from large ag companies and that farms are no longer family-run.

Should farmers be changing their production systems to meet consumers’ demands? “They should not be changing,” Sher said firmly. “In a perfect world, well educated consumers would be helping farmers innovate but there are plenty of suggestions coming from people who have never been on a farm before”. He added that people often make up their minds on how food should be produced without understanding the circumstances.

“What would you do if an animal was sick?” he asked, stating that those kind of scenarios have probably never crossed peoples’ minds. For the livestock-focused elements of the documentary, he hopes to bring in researchers and talk about the Codes of Practices that exist between the various commodity groups.

The film will eventually follow the food all the way from the farm, through processing and showcase the final product in one of Toronto's most up and coming restaurants.

Sher explained that the challenge of being an agvocate is to be able to reach the non-farm audience—the average consumer. “The problem is that the two have never really met each other,” he said, referring to the farmer and the non-agricultural minded consumer.

To garner some attention, the project was introduced as a #beforetheplate challenge on social media, encouraging people tied to a family farm to share a photo or a collection of photos of their favourite moment on the farm and tag three farm friends to do the same.

Posts have been created and shared on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

“Farmers need to be the ones to support agriculture, people in the city have

never spoken to a farmer” he stated, adding that while the farmer is among the most trusted of professions, the agriculture industry as a whole is not generally trusted by the public. Sher hopes the documentary will provide people with more peace of mind about where their food comes from.

The documentary will be shot in Ontario, starring young farmers, including a number of female primary producers.

Some footage has been filmed at this time, though Sher said that about 95 percent of it still has to be filmed, as early footage was shot before he really knew how the concept would come together. The goal is to debut the documentary at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.

The efforts put in by farmers to ensure their livestock are healthy and well-cared for are not well understood by the urban public.

Meet the winners of the 2016 RBC Beef Supreme Challenge WORDS BY PIPER WHELAN

F

or those who dream of cattle show glory, one Saturday afternoon in late November is the destination after a year’s hard work. Regina’s Canadian Western Agribition wraps up the show season with its celebration of the best in Canadian beef—RBC Beef Supreme Challenge. The grand champions of the Agribition breed shows are joined by champions qualifying from 16 noteworthy livestock exhibitions across the continent, and a panel of judges determines which of these stellar females and bulls will take home the biggest title of the year. The 2016 edition of the Beef Supreme Challenge included 31 females and 40 bulls, a number of which were champions at multiple shows, representing a variety of breeds and regions. This year’s event saw a sweep by the Angus breed, claiming both the Supreme Champion Female and Bull honours.

In the female competition, a breeding program that has graced the Beef Supreme Challenge several times rose to the top once again. The 2016 Agribition Supreme Champion Female was DMM Blackbird 105A, bred and owned by Miller Wilson Angus of Bashaw, Alberta. This victory marks the third time that Lee and Dawn Wilson and family have brought home a supreme title at this event. The winning cow is out of Southern Ox Blackbird 12J, and was sired by Gumbo Gulch Creed 94S. In addition to winning

Titan Takes the Lead The breeders behind the 2016 Agribition Supreme Champion Bull, on the other hand, experienced the unreal rush of winning this major event for the first time. EF Titan 545, owned by Enright Farms of Renfrew, Ontario, and Cavanhill Farms of Kinburn, ON, was selected as the top bull among this year’s contenders. The yearling bull is out of EXAR Blackbird 5877 and by SAV Harvestor 0338.

Enright Farms is located in the Ottawa Valley, an hour west of the nation’s capital. Established by Barry and Jane Enright, the farm is home to more than 400 head of cattle, and while their herd is primarily commercial, they also own about 70 purebred Angus females. The Enrights’ adult children, Sean, Robert and Lauren, are all involved in the family operation. Sean works full-time on the farm and lives there with his wife, Kathryn, while both Robert and Lauren work off the farm in road construction and as a teacher, respectively. Sean Enright tells us that his family raised purebred Limousin cattle in the 1980s, and introduced purebred Angus genetics into their herd in 2007.

Their supreme-winning bull, Titan, is a result of this quality breeding program. The Enrights purchased his dam, born in 2007, from Oklahoma’s Express Ranches. “She was a 4-H project, and we showed her and flushed her, and she’s raised quite a few for us,” says Enright. Titan stood out among their other young bulls early on, weaning at a desirable weight.

“He wasn’t, from our perspective, a real show-type bull—one who could raise a lot of show heifers right off the get-go—but there’s a lot of guys looking for red meat and muscle in bulls, and he certainly has a lot of that.”

In the spring of 2016, the Enrights sold Titan to Cavanhill Farms, a nearby commercial program and frequent bull buyer. “The deal was…that after he ran with cows I’d like to come see him, and if he was still holding his condition really well, we’d like to try to show him.

So they agreed to that, and we brought him home, got him ready for the shows, and it took off from there,” Enright explains. After winning his first few shows, the Enrights bought back an half interest in Titan. “And then I guess the rest is history,” he says with a laugh.

Titan and another yearling bull called Colossal, also his maternal brother, were in the Enright Farms’ show string for 2016, and both bulls placed well in shows across Ontario and in the United States. Although Enright had his eye on the bull’s brother as

his show bull of choice, Titan exhibited traits he knew would turn heads in the show ring. “We knew as a yearling bull we’d like to show something with a lot of power, and it just worked out that we happened to have two brothers who could do that,” he says.

On the road to Agribition, Titan claimed the honour of Champion Angus Bull and Supreme Champion Bull at the 2016 Renfrew Fair, and Champion Angus Bull and Supreme Champion Bull at Expo Boeuf 2016. As a result of his many show successes, he was awarded the title of the 2016 Junior Champion Black Angus Bull and Honourable Mention for Black Show Bull of the Year in the Angus Gold Show program.

Taking top honours at Expo Boeuf qualified Titan for the Beef Supreme Challenge at Agribition, which was a factor in the Enrights’ decision to make the trip out to Regina. Agribition was their intended destination for a bull like Titan, whom the Enrights knew would be well suited to compete with

bulls from western Canadian breeding programs. “He outperformed a lot of the other [bulls they raised], and we thought that if we wanted to go west that was what we wanted,” says Enright.

The family aims to make the trip west to Agribition every other year, and in alternating years they take cattle to the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky—a shorter trek for them than traveling to Regina. “Something worked this time; we hit both this year just because we thought we had cattle good enough to go to both shows,” he states.

Both Agribition and the North American

are ideal venues for different aspects of the Enrights’ breeding program and marketing channels. “Where we’re located, we can sell more show heifers, and for us to go down to Louisville, Kentucky, that’s more of a market we’re pushing with the show heifer end of it.

We’ve sold a lot of cattle down there…

If you’re in the show heifer business, that’s the show to go to,” says Enright. “It’s always nice, every once in a while, to see how you compare with the bigger guys down there.” In terms of the Canadian beef industry, Agribition is an important stop for doing business with western beef producers, a key market for Enright

Farms. “It’s good for business to go out to that show as much as we can to promote our program out there, too—to prove that we’re not just in the show heifer business. We can still raise top-quality bulls as well.” This fact was evident when Titan went on to win Grand Champion Bull in Agribition’s Black Angus show.

For all his confidence in his prized bull, Enright admits that the outcome of the Beef Supreme Challenge took him by surprise. “I didn’t really expect it at all.

I was just happy to make top ten,” he says, noting that their original goal for Agribition was to do well in the Black Angus show. “After that you hope for a top ten, and if you don’t, we were still more than happy with winning the champion Black Angus bull out there. When we made top ten, I was quite content walking away with that, because there were some really good bulls in the top ten,” he continues, “it was a bit of a shock, that’s for sure. I was just standing there, waiting to see who won, and I was lucky enough to be the one to do it.” The moment their bull was selected as supreme champion, he explains, is still thrilling to think about. “We found the video from DMLS, and it still kind of sends chills down your back watching the video,” he adds.

After Agribition, Titan went to stud at Bow Valley Genetics in Alberta, and

he’ll be home in the spring for breeding.

His show days, however, are now in the past. “We’ve kind of joked about trying to take him back again, but I don’t think we’ll chance it. You’d hate to see him get beat after that,” says Enright, who is happy to have Titan go out on top. “It was a great way to end it.” The family is already looking forward to what Titan’s brother can do in the show ring as a two-year-old in 2017. “I think he’s just as good as Titan is, so we’ll probably push him hard this year for the show career.”

Enright describes this experience as an incredible feat for their program.

“It’s something I’ve been dreaming of, something you dream of trying to accomplish, and to finally be able to achieve something like that makes you think you’re going in the right direction,” he says. “It reassures you of your breeding program and the decisions you make, because you never know how things are going to turn out, years down the road, but it’s done a lot for us.”

He also views this win as a positive step and some encouragement for beef producers in eastern Canada. “It wasn’t just for our farm. It was kind of for Ontario,” he notes, explaining that some breeders in their area may find it hard to compete with western beef producers in that setting. “We were hesitant to go out there because it costs so much to go, especially with just one animal, and you never know what could happen. It was nice to be able to do that for us, but it was also nice to show the rest of the guys back east that we can compete, and it just takes a lot of hard work.”

2016 was also a memorable year for Enright and his wife, who welcomed their first child, Anna, in September. “It was a year that will be hard to beat for sure,” he says. And his overall thoughts on the show victory that capped off a special year? “It was an honour to win it, and it might never, ever happen again. Just to be in that moment was unbelievable. I’m just happy it happened, and if it never happens again, I’m content with that.”
