WORDS FROM THE

Summer is nearly over so its time for another edition of Top Stock. As we head towards the fall show season, we are pleased to announce that for the second year in a row, Top Stock was chosen as the Best Non-Association publication in the 13th Annual Livestock Publications Council awards competition. It is gratifying to see industry acceptance of this small venture. Even better, though, is all the time you spent reading the magazine on social media. We were excited to reach over 14,000 viewers with our July online issue, thanks to your shares, likes and comments. The draw to award a $400 sale credit to be used at the business of any participating Top Stock advertiser went to to Brianna Martinson, Weyburn, SK. Congratulations Brianna! It was a great summer for showing cattle. The steers in Calgary were just plain deadly, and it should be recognized that both champions were home raised. This is a huge accomplishment for the youth showing them, and speaks to the quality of cattle you can find here in Canada if you look. This issue features the two young breeders who achieved this major triumph, along with the winners of the Supreme banners at Summer Synergy. This is no small feat and we are sure their winning ways will continue into the fall. Also in the spirit of youth development, this issue profiles a new Junior event held in conjunction with Canadian Red-Round-up. If you are a youth looking to get into the Red Angus breed, the article on page 20 is for you! As we gear up for the fall sales season, we would like to remind you that the deadline for booking your ad for the late fall issue is September 25. This issue will be published by Nov. 1 and we will be giving out complimentary copies at Edmonton’s Farmfair, the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, and Canadian Western Agribition in Regina. As our most widely distributed issue of the year, this is a great way to promote your fall and winter purebred sales. See you on the show road! – Katie Songer, Editor

WORDS BY PIPER WHELAN

An institution of the Red Angus breed is welcoming youth to its ranks through a new junior event.

E

ach October, some of the top Red Angus cattle in Canada fill the barns at Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta, for an eagerly-anticipated weekend devoted to the breed. Here, you’ll see Red Angus producers of all ages preparing sale cattle and visiting with other breeders and potential buyers. It’s the youngest Red Angus enthusiasts that have caught the attention of the Canadian Red Angus Promotions Society, and with them and other junior exhibitors in mind, this organization is now in its third year of hosting a special junior component as part of its biggest event of the year. Canadian Red Roundup is known as the foremost Red Angus event in the country, drawing producers from within the breed and beyond. The 45th edition of this two-day event will feature a bull futurity, frozen genetics sale and a donation heifer auction in addition to its main attraction, the Canada Red Roundup Sale. A relatively new feature of this weekend is the Junior Red Angus Heifer Calf Extravaganza, introduced in 2015 and aimed at young people interested in purchasing their own Red Angus females. After a parade of the eligible heifer calves, juniors can bid on the chance to show one of the calves in a special class. The exhibitor of the Grand Champion Calf wins a $4,000 sale credit towards a lot in the next day’s sale. Reserve Champion brings a $3,000

sale credit, while the third and fourth-place exhibitors win $2,000 and $1,000 sale credits, respectively. Any extra money raised through the Calcutta is awarded to junior participants through a draw. Long-time Red Angus promoter and Red Roundup organizer Bryan Mackenzie explains that the Heifer Calf Extravaganza was created to increase youth involvement in the Red Angus breed. “Showing a heifer project, for any junior member, is an extremely valuable lesson in life, as far as the care of the animal, the networking with people at different functions, junior shows, and that leads into possibly getting into a herd of cattle for them and a future business direction for them,” he says. However, he notes, it’s not always easy for young exhibitors to build their own herds. “A lot of kids out there, I’ve found, don’t think they can afford a good show calf, so this is a way we’ve created to possibly help them do that,” he explains. The event is open to all youth, not just those whose families raise Red Angus cattle. Sixteen juniors participated in the inaugural Heifer Calf Extravaganza in 2015, taking home a total of $12,000 in prize money. The 2016 edition of the event saw 18 juniors participate, with $14,000 in prize money awarded. In 2016, Maria Taschuk of Two Hills, AB, exhibited the Heifer Calf Extravaganza Champion, Red Cinder Suiji Lass 52D, raised and consigned by Cinder Angus of Barrhead, AB. Taschuk’s family raises Simmental-Red Angus influence cattle, and after becoming interested in showing cattle through 4-H, she started her own small herd, Airam Angus. Taschuk’s first purebred Red Angus heifer, purchased at the 2015 edition of Red Roundup, proved to be a valuable investment. This heifer was Grand Champion Heifer at Taschuk’s 4-H show, and placed

third in her class at the 2016 Provincial 4-H Beef Heifer Show in Olds, AB. Taschuk wanted to become more involved in the Red Angus breed because she admired their appearance and disposition, she explains. She purchased the show rights to this Cinder Angus calf for this event because she appreciated the heifer’s width and depth, which was the style of animal she hoped to purchase with her 2016 sale credit. She did just that, using her sale credit to purchase this heifer calf as well as another calf, Red Vikse 608 Hamilee T o p S t o c k M a g a z i n e / E a r ly Fa l l 2 0 1 7

105D, consigned by Vikse Family Farm. Cinder Angus is run by Brad and Nicole Yoder, whose daughters Brynne and Tavianne are active on the junior show circuit. Brynne showed the winning calf, known as Honey, at a few shows in the summer of 2016. “I actually wanted to keep her as one of my own,” she explains. Having an animal in this component appealed to the Yoders because of their own daughters’ involvement in junior programs. “Our kids are extremely involved in our day-to-day stuff, in our selection and the processes we go through

with retaining animals and selling animals and getting animals ready for sales,” says Nicole Yoder. “Most of the animals that come through our program, they’ve got to meet the certain standards—their phenotype and their conformation as well as their disposition—because it’s just as important to have the kids involved, and you can’t have them involved if they’re going to get chased up the fence by cows. We like to see other juniors succeed, and we’ve always been an open book as far as helping any other kid who needs extra help.” The Yoders have consigned cattle through Red Roundup for many years, and it’s important for them to have the next generation involved, too. “We know that this is a premier sale for our breed, and it brings a lot of marketing opportunities,” Nicole explains. “It’s good experience. It’s only a couple days of school missed for the girls, and they can come here and get more experience with marketing … It’s just

a good sale to come to. It always has been, and the spin they’ve put on it with being a junior futurity has been a neat one.” In fact, Brynne was the winner of the first Heifer Calf Extravaganza in 2015, buying the show rights for a calf her family consigned and then using her sale credit to help purchase this heifer for herself. “Bryan came out selecting, and he wanted to take an entire cow family on us—the heifer calf, the yearling, the two-year-old, her calf and the matriarch of the cow family,” Nicole explains. After some negotiation, the heifer calf off the two-year-old was selected for the sale, but Brynne wanted her for her own herd. She set to work to make the calf her own. Using this sale credit, another sale credit won through the Canadian Junior Angus Foundation and a 4-H loan, Brynne was able to purchase the heifer, whom she calls Siren. This proved to be a wise choice, resulting in a number of show

victories for Brynne and Siren. Some of their 2016 achievements include Reserve Champion Bred and Owned Female at the 2016 Canadian Junior All Breeds Show, division champion at the Alberta Junior Angus Show, division champion at Making Champions and reserve division champion at Summer Synergy. Having seen its success for themselves, the Yoders believe that creating a junior component was a smart move for Red Roundup. “I think that the Angus junior association has a lot to offer, and extending it into the sale and trying to entice juniors to come. There’s a really diverse selection of females here on offer, and a lot of outstanding breeders,” Nicole explains. “Because we have younger kids, we really enjoy seeing good animals

get into kids’ hands. It’s just like giving a green kid an experienced horse and giving them the opportunity to experience something when they’re really struggling.” This high quality of cattle offered at Red Roundup, Mackenzie states, is a primary strength of the event. “It’s the cream of the crop of Red Angus in Canada from 40 different environments, 40 different management groups, 40 different genetics situations, and it looks that good. That’s impressive,” he says. For Mackenzie, that quality is similar to the hard work and skills exhibited by youth in the beef industry. “To me, that lineup of heifer calves is just like the kids we’re trying to appeal to—that’s the future of our business right there,” he says of the T o p S t o c k M a g a z i n e / E a r ly Fa l l 2 0 1 7

junior exhibitors. “The calendar year heifer calves are like our junior kids, and that’s why we tie them together.” Mackenzie found the general response to the 2016 Heifer Calf Extravaganza to be positive and promising. “When we started the auctioning off the heifer calves for the kids to buy, then it got really interesting and exciting around the ring,” he explains. “The keenness of the kids, the willingness of the parents to support their kids—it was incredible, so I thought there was a lot of energy circling the thing, and it did exactly what we wanted it to do. Our job as the sales management for this is to create commerce for our consignors, and this is just one part of the atmosphere we can create.”

For him, this response is a sign of good things to come for the future of Red Roundup and the beef industry in general. “Any future of any event depends on its youth. If you don’t have youth to carry on for the next coming years, then you’re in trouble. But judging by last year and this year, our excitement from our youth that we have is going to be very contagious,” he says. The history of Red Roundup itself, he continues, is another advantage. “It’s got some longevity to it, and kids can get behind that. They know it’s not going to go away.” The Red Roundup organizers plan to build upon the Heifer Calf Extravaganza in the future. A boost to this came when the 2016 Red Roundup donation heifer, won by U.S.-based On the Mark Cattle Co., was donated back to support the 2017 Extravaganza. “We just want to continue growing it, and each year we tweak it a little more. It’s totally self-supportive on our fundraising efforts, so that way it’s easy. If we had to struggle for the fundraising for it, then it would be a difficult decision to keep it going, but so far the Red Angus people who come and support Red Roundup are very eager and willing to donate money to keep the junior thing going because they know it’s important,” says Mackenzie. “I think we have it headed in a very positive direction.” ”

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

The dairy, pork and poultry industries have all implemented some type of Quality Assurance program similar to ours. Retailers and consumers are looking for it and this is our opportunity to use an industry created program to enhance our social license to produce beef by gaining consumer trust. There is strong potential to increase local consumption and global exports of Canadian beef. VBP+ validates sustainable production practices, on-farm. Let’s show the world why Canadian beef is the safest, highest quality protein product on the planet!

Audit fees in Saskatchewan are a flat $650 for Cow-Calf and $850 for Feedlots per on-farm audit, and beef producers in Saskatchewan can get 50% back through the On-Farm Food Safety (OFFS) funding program for their First Certification Audit.

The champions of Summer Synergy and the Calgary Stampede Junior Steer Classic share a look at their moments of victory.

t’s the moment everyone’s waited for. There’s nothing quite like the tension

and hope of a championship drive, and the final Sunday of the Calgary Stampede sees two such events. After a week of high-calibre competition in Olds, Alberta, livestock champions converge on Calgary for the Summer Synergy Supreme Show.

WORDS BY PIPER WHELAN

This coincides with the championship class of the Stampede’s Junior Steer Classic, making for an afternoon of high stakes and superb cattle. Here, meet the four young exhibitors who rose to the top at these two noteworthy shows.

"It was just super exciting, and for [Scott Schaake] to say all those good things about my animals – it made me feel awesome."

L

aurie Morasch has been a force to be reckoned with on the junior show circuit for years, with plenty of major wins to her name. “I’ve been showing cattle ever since I could walk. I showed my first animal when I was four years old,” says the 19-year-old. Morasch grew up on her family’s ranch, Lazy MC Angus at Bassano, AB, where they currently raise 200 head of Red and Black Angus. In addition to purebred cattle, she has her own small herd of commercial animals. This summer, Morasch added another championship to her extensive list of accomplishments when her two-year-old cow, PM Rosebud 77’15, was named the Supreme Champion Purebred Female of Summer Synergy. Morasch purchased this Black Angus female from Poplar Meadows Angus as a heifer calf. “Her mom is an HF Tiger daughter, and her breeding really stood out to me … She was really fancy and had that maternal look,” she explains. “She did super well as a bred heifer, did really good at all the jackpot shows. I had a lot of champions with her, and this is her first calf this year.” The calf, Lazy MC Rosebud 141 E, is by BC Lookout. Morasch represented the Black Angus breed in both supreme shows, as her heifer, Candy, was the Commercial Champion Female for that breed division. “I really like to represent the purebred

side and the commercial side,” she says. “I’ve always had a soft spot for the colourful ones— the commercial ones—and I love promoting our herd and our Angus cattle, both black and red, so that was cool for the other side this year.” Her excitement for this supreme victory is evident as she speaks happily about how meaningful it is to win such a highly competitive show. “It means everything. It was just super exciting, and for [Scott Schaake, one of the judges on the Synergy supreme panel] to say all those good things about my animals— to have somebody come up from down there and as many cattle as he’s seen, and for him to say those things about my cow—it made me feel awesome.” For Morasch, the 2017 edition of Synergy was one for the record books. “I couldn’t have had a better week. It was amazing,” she states. “That recognition made all my hard work seem like I was doing it for the right reason.” She’s also grateful for the friends and family who helped make it a reality. “It was a crazy week, and to have all three animals there, I needed a lot of help,” she says. She’s especially appreciative of the help from her younger brother, Layne. “He really stepped up, and this is really the first year he’s taken a liking to it, so that was really cool, and he got to show my calf for me at Stampede when we were selected, so that made his week.”

G

SB C-Zee has been in the spotlight numerous times during her show career, with no sign of slowing down. The two-year-old Comfort Zone female, bred and owned by Bailey Wauters, was the Champion MaineTainer Female at Summer Synergy, with calf GSB Revenant, before winning the title of Supreme Champion Commercial Female. Wauters and her family run 350 commercial cows on their ranch at Wrentham, AB. “We started out with some purebred Angus cows and then brought in some commercial Angus bulls and commercial Simmental bulls,” she explains. They also do some AI work for her show prospects. Wauter’s champion female turned heads at many shows last summer, capping off the year by winning the UFA Youth Supreme Quest, the first yearling heifer to do so. “It just turned out really well this year that we were able to show her as a heifer calf, bred and then as a pair,” she says. “It’s kind of special for us to be able to raise one at home and then bring them out for three years in a row and have a lot of successes with her. We’ve just been really happy with all the stuff that she’s done for us.” The win at Synergy was especially meaningful as the cow’s dam, GSB Blaze, was also the Synergy Champion Commercial Simmental Female, meaning Wauters had two pairs—mother and daughter— vying for the Supreme Commercial Championship. “It was definitely really busy but rewarding,” she says. “It’s pretty cool to have two pairs there in the supreme drive at Calgary. It made for a busy week, but I don’t think how busy it was takes away from anything, because it was definitely really exciting.”

For Wauters, this championship ranks high among her favourite wins. “You don’t really have your hopes up because you just never know, especially with a panel of judges; it can turn out any way. But it was really exciting, probably one of the most exciting moments,” she explains. “To come back as a pair and win the Supreme Champion Commercial at Synergy was pretty special, just because that cow means so much to us, and she’s done a lot of winning, but that one was probably one of the best things that we’ve won with her.” The high level of competition at this show makes the victory even more satisfying. “To win a small show is cool, too, but to come out on top at a show that has that many cattle and that many kids who work hard every day means a lot,” she states. “It just goes to show that all your hard work is paying off, and it’s a really great feeling to come out on top at such a big show like that.” Wauter is excited to see what the future holds for these cows and their calves, a bull and a steer. “We’ll keep breeding the cows back and just hope we get more offspring year to year, and I’m sure we’ll continue to show the Comfort Zone cow at a few more shows, like Synergy, next year.”

"To come back as a pair and win the Supreme Champion Commercial at Synergy was pretty special, just because that cow means so much to us, and she’s done a lot of winning, but that one was probably one of the best things that we’ve won with her."

GRAND CHAMPION STEER T

he Junior Steer Classic attracts the best steers and the toughest competitors from across Canada, and to win is no small feat. When the dust settled on the 2017 edition of this event, it was two home-raised steers that took top honours—an impressive testament to the hard work of the juniors on the halter. Fifth time proved to be a charm for Devon Scott, who, after four years of competing at the Junior Steer Classic, found himself in the winner’s circle of Calgary’s famed show. The 20-year-old from Arrowwood, AB, has been showing cattle since the age of nine, and this summer he exhibited a black steer weighing in at 1,382 lbs. Winning Grand Champion Steer, Scott took home $12,000 in scholarships and $6,000 cash. After the show, his steer was purchased by the Ron Daley Group for $22,000. Scott and his family run 130 commercial cows of Angus and Simmental influence, and also farm 2,000 acres of cropland. “Just recently we bought into some purebred Simmentals. There’ll be about 20 purebred red and black Simmentals kicking around our place, too,” he adds. Scott’s steer was out of an AngusSimmental cross cow in his family’s herd. “He was the best one we had, and we saw potential in him in October, November, and he just went up from there,” he says. “We decided in the fall that that steer was as good as anything we could buy, and to be able to show something that we raised right at our home place, it just makes any accomplishment that he did that much better, and we can promote ourselves better, too. People can see what kind of cattle we can raise.” Scott and his steer had their share of championships on the road to the Calgary Stampede. Early on, the steer won his class at the Taber Junior Livestock Classic last October. This spring, Scott’s steer was Reserve Champion Steer at

Claresholm’s Chinook Junior Stock Show and Grand Champion at the jackpot steer show in Acme, AB. As well, he was the Grand Champion Steer at Scott’s 4-H achievement day. Scott had admirable hopes for his steer when show day arrived, but was unsure of where he would stand. “I honestly didn’t know where I was going to be at. There were some pretty good steers there, and you knew that the people who were getting them ready were getting them ready right,” he recalls. “I didn’t have a clue what was going to come out of it. We were hoping to come out of our class, win our class, and if we could make it to the top six, that’d be great, and anything more than that was just an added bonus.” With that humble approach, the moment his steer was slapped as grand champion came as a bit of a shock for Scott. “It happened so quickly, I didn’t really know what happened. It took me a while for it to really sink in. It took me a bit. Speechless, I guess—that’s about all I can say.” The victory is even sweeter, he explains, with a steer he raised himself. “At the end of the day, there were steers that our steer was getting beat by back in the fall and in early spring, but we were striving for the end show in Calgary as a fat steer, that’s what we were hoping for and trying to feed him that way, and it obviously worked. He came out on top, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.” Coming off this major win, Scott is eligible to show at the Junior Steer Classic one more summer, but hasn’t decided on that yet. “We’ve got a couple of calves that look pretty good, but we haven’t made our minds up yet whether we’re going to show them ourselves or sell them to some other people and then help them get into the Stampede,” he says. “We’re just going to get the calves on feed and get them halterbroke and then make up our minds.”

"When he got slapped for reserve, it was pretty great. It was an experience you won’t ever forget."

Calgary Stampede

RESERVE CHAMPION STEER

W

hile Scott is a veteran competitor of this show, 2017 marked the first time that Casie Brokenshire exhibited at steer at the Stampede. Brokenshire, who is 14, has shown cattle since she was six years old, and her older brothers have previously competed at the Junior Steer Classic. Her family runs about 100 heard of Simmentals and also raises club calves at Estevan, Saskatchewan. Her first time competing at this show turned out just right, as Brokenshire won Reserve Champion with a 1,325-lb. steer, winning $8,000 in scholarships and $3,000 cash. Brokenshire bonded with this particular steer, who seemed to only have eyes for her, early on. “He had a bad attitude, and he didn’t like anyone else except me,” she laughs. “He was a pretty good calf, so I said to my dad, ‘Since he only likes me, do I get to show him?’ And Dad says, ‘well I guess—can’t do anything else with him.’ So I ended up showing him, and I had a really good year with him.”

showing your first time. You just thought, We’ll go in the top six and that will be plenty enough,’ but then when he got slapped for reserve, it was pretty great. It was an experience you won’t ever forget,” she says. Given that this was her first time showing at this highly competitive show, her choice of words to sum up the experience make perfect sense: “Nervewracking, overwhelming,” she says. “Showing against all those older people from places that are super competitive, it was crazy. I was shaking when I went into the ring.” Despite this, her experience was satisfying and memorable, and she’s keen to thank the volunteers and sponsors that made the steer show possible. “It feels like all the hard work and time that me and my family put into our steers and our cattle has paid off,” she says. After such a successful first trip to the Steer Classic, Brokenshire is eager to return next year and already has a few possible show prospects selected.

Together they picked up a number of championships before turning their attention to Calgary. “He was reserve at the Saskatoon Beef Expo behind my older brother Colton,” she notes. They took Grand Champion at the Southeast Club Calf Cruze in Weyburn, SK, and then Reserve Champion at Lord of the Ring in Estevan. Brokenshire and her steer also excelled in 4-H, with her steer winning Grand Champion at her achievement day and at her regional 4-H show. When show day dawned at Calgary, Brokenshire was hopeful about her chances, but the win still came as a wonderful surprise. “I was hoping to be in the top six, and didn’t really expect to be where I was,” she says. “I was shocked. You didn’t expect it going up and

At Reidholm Farms, we focus on getting back to the basics; having good, sound, functional breeding stock with longevity and style. We work to achieve a breeding program to develop cattle with good feet, and legs, straight top lines, lots of muscle and a great temperament. We are in the beef industry and right now, pounds of beef pay off! When you purchase at RK, rest assured that even after you get home, we will be available to answer any questions and give advice on breeding selections, feeding, grooming and showmanship. As in the past, all sale calves are halter broke and ready to be a part of your show string or breeding program.
