WORDS FROM THE
I am pleased to welcome you to the late fall issue of Top Stock. As we are busy polishing off this 15th edition, we have just had a return to sunshine after a challenging September for much of Western Canada. It was clear at the first few fall shows that competitors welcomed the chance to bring their cattle out and socialize – the only constructive thing they could do while the weather put harvest out of reach. We can't wait for the rest of the fall run. We will be at the Royal, Farmfair and Agribition with copies of the magazine, which contains a story that I think will be particularly fascinating for the 'younger generation.' I must admit that when Dr. Don Miller of Sundown Embryo Transplants recapped some of his adventures in the early transplant business, I had never really thought of the early years of a technology we take for granted. Hopping back to the present era, we also interview a promising youth with a fresh perspective on how Canadians view junior show regulations – whether you agree with John Hogberg or not, it must be noted that this is a worthwhile discussion to have. Finally, as has become tradition, we are excited to interview Garth Rancier, an accomplished cattlemen and judge that will be sorting through one of the largest and toughest junior heifer shows in the country at the Royal Winter Fair. 06
To our past and present advertisers, we pride ourselves on being a dynamic publication constantly evolving to serve our customers needs. To that end, we would like to take this opportunity to make a few announcements. Firstly, we would welcome your feedback and have produced a survey in tandem with this issue to find out how we can better serve your marketing goals. Fill it out and be entered to win a complimentary ad in an upcoming issue of your choice! Additionally, we are pleased to introduce the option to add video content to the digital edition of Top Stock. We are really excited about the ground-breaking potential this new technology brings to our online platform. Talk to us this fall about how to employ this for more advertising reach. By popular demand, we are planning on moving the publication date for our spring edition a bit earlier this February. Watch our social media for upcoming deadlines and start planning now to advertise your bull sale in Top Stock. We are an optimum platform to reach breeders of all breeds as Top Stock is read by all affiliations across the nation. Thanks for all your support in 2018 – See you at the shows! - Katie Songer

WORDS BY JEFF GAYE
DR
Don Miller has been involved in embryo transfer from its very early days in Canada in the 1970s. He has seen the technique help the cattle industry evolve from a few basic breeds to the more diverse—and more productive— programs on Canadian farms and ranches today. The development of embryo transfer has not only produced better cattle, he says, it has led to a better-educated generation of breeders. “You'll be hard pressed to find anyone under 30 that's not aware of frozen embryos or embryo transfer and also all the reproductive idiosyncrasies of the cow—understanding their cycle, what goes on where, what hormones are involved,” Miller said. “It's been a tremendous learning tool.” Miller was a high school student in the early 1970s when permits became available to import cattle from Europe. Canadian herds were primarily Hereford, Angus, and Shorthorns until then, and the prospect of introducing new genetics to the industry was exciting.
RECALLING THE There were 15 to 20 European breeds that became available for import into Canada.
begin
“Of course there was the lure of something like a new kid on the block. And a chance of making thousands of dollars in breeding programs if it went good, and the chance to lose thousands if it didn't,” Miller said. “So a lot of established cattle people imported one or two different breeds from Europe, and tried to incorporate those genetics into their existing program” “Most of the new breeds were dropped, but some stayed. It was a chance to get new genetics into Canada that weren't available before, because there were no frozen embryos or semen from these breeds. And to bring live cattle over, there were lots of hurdles,” Miller said.

The obvious hurdle was the cost. It would run about $10,000 to ship an animal from overseas, in addition to the purchase price, and once it arrived in Canada it was quarantined as a precaution. Embryo transfer was still in its early stages at that time. But to take advantage of the opportunity to introduce new breeds, and to populate Canadian herds with purebred offspring, the industry moved embryo transfer from experimental to production mode.

“This all sounds very similar to today’s transplant centres, but a lot was different then,” Miller said. “The veterinarians felt that the only way to recover embryos was to flush them out of the donor’s oviducts, which necessitated intervening three days after their heat and insemination.” “To access the oviduct of a bovine required abdominal surgery, the donor cow being intubated and placed on a gas anesthetic machine and wheeled into a sterile surgery room after she had been surgically prepped and draped, along with all surgeons and assistants having to cap, mask and gown!” It worked, but it was elaborate and expensive, and hard on the donor cow. Because it involved physically handling the structures around the ovaries, there would often be damage that rendered a valuable donor cow sterile.
Top Stock Magazine / Winter 2018
The recipients, meanwhile, also required general anesthetic to receive the embryos, which were placed into their oviducts via a midline incision. Embryos had to be transferred while fresh, because there was no technique to safely freeze them. At any time, the transplant centres could have a couple dozen anesthetized recipients lying on their sides, breathing through tubes as they recovered from the surgery. At optimum production, about 50 heats per day were required. With no drugs available to synchronize their heats, a thousand recipient cows had to be on hand with careful attention being paid to their heats. “I was just a grade 12 kid at that time, helping out with those thousand cows,” Miller said. “Our family actually owned all those cows, and we did all of the feeding and the heat checking, sorting and hauling and then trucking them back to our location. “And so I worked three different places with that whole operation—getting the cows gathered, doing the heat checking, hauling them over and helping with the

surgeries. But that's the detail that it took to get things done.” To preserve the donor cows’ fertility, and to avoid the costs of midline surgery, the centres started trying to recover the embryos seven days after ovulation, after they had entered the donor’s uterus. This eliminated the need for the invasive surgery. The results were encouraging. The recipient cow also had to wait for about seven days after her heat and ovulation. At this point, a vet would make a 10-centimetre incision on the cow’s flank, manoeuvre the uterine horn out through the incision, and implant the embryo through a small puncture hole in the uterus. Then, “the uterine tip was simply wiped and replaced back into the abdomen, and the muscle and skin were sutured,” Miller said. The next important development was the ability to freeze embryos. Mouse embryos were used for research—most mammalian embryos are 64 cells at about 7 days, so they were essentially similar to bovine embryos. The key to safe freezing was to find a cryoprotectant, a medium that could displace most of the water from the embryonic cells. cells from expanding as they froze, thus keeping the cell membranes intact. Glycerol was used at first, and then ethylene glycol. These compounds would normally be toxic, but in the cooled and frozen state, the embryo is not trying to metabolize or grow. Once the embryo is thawed, the cryoprotectant is removed by the same osmotic process that it entered with, this time in reverse. It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention. In the case of embryo transfer, it was the rare opportunity to import European cattle breeds, the expense of transporting a “critical mass” of animals, and the ingenuity of industry players, that revolutionized breeding practices in Canada and worldwide. In fact, Miller says, embryo transfer is now one of the primary means of breeding on many farms. “It's proven itself,” he said. “Year after year we go to farms and the first thing they do when they start their breeding program, is embryo transfer. They follow up with artificial insemination, and then turn a bull out to cover the cows that didn't become pregnant with the first two procedures.” “So it's built into the breeding programs. It's year after year, and at certain farms if it’s not the same Wednesday of a certain week in April, it’s the Thursday or the Tuesday. They’re that regimented to it, that's when they start to breed. And you're part of their whole breeding program.” Miller’s Sundown Livestock Transplants is one of four embryo transfer centres in Alberta. These centres employ six veterinarians certified to export embryos

(there are currently 67 certified veterinarians in all of Canada). Miller has seen embryo transfer grow from the time he was checking heats and trucking cattle 50 years ago, to the point today where it’s “almost as commonplace as driving into a Tim Hortons drive-thru.” And it’s still evolving. Embryos can be sexed, and calves can be sexed in utero through ultrasound; a single embryo can be split to create identical twin calves; cloning has been done in horses, cattle, and sheep; and in vitro fertilization appears to have a bright future, especially using sexed semen. Embryo transfer has been a huge part of improvements to cattle and herd quality, and beef productivity, worldwide. After all, a tank containing 1,000 frozen embryos can be shipped overseas for about $1,000 these days—a big step forward from $10,000 per animal in the early 1970s. This gives breeders a world of choices for genetics. In Canada, five major breeds—Simmental, Charolais, Maine Anjou, Gelbvieh and Limousin—owe their success to that early
importing program. There are animals today whose pedigrees go back to the first imports, and there is even semen still available from a few of those imported bulls. The Canadian success story has been replicated in countries around the world. For Miller, who has been involved in embryo transfer for his entire career, the sense of personal satisfaction is twofold. “I’ll start with the people themselves,” he said. “I've worked at a lot of farms now for three generations. In other words, I started off with the grandparents, then their sons and daughters and now I work with the grandkids.” “And then of course seeing the cattle that you produce. I just was looking at an online video sale in Australia, and probably 80 per cent of the cattle are embryos we exported. The other 20 per cent are one generation removed from original imported embryos. “Yes, it is very gratifying to see the resulting calves and the successes that the breeders are having, within Canada and worldwide.”

17-year old John Hogberg is passionately looking to change the way Canadians view junior show regulations

F
or most people, age thirty is a dreaded milestone, but for young Canadian livestock exhibitors, age twenty-one is that that landmark. Turning twenty-one signifies the end of your junior show career. It is the unfortunate number that restricts the opportunity to be on the halter or back in the chutes pulling legs at livestock contests labeled “junior”. However, 17-year old John Hogberg is
passionately looking to change the way Canadians view junior show regulations in regards to guardian participation. For Hogberg, showing cattle is a family affair and symbolizes more than just banners. Bar H Land and Cattle, Hogberg’s family operation, has found success at both fall majors and spring jackpot shows, but continues to keep their focus on their

breeding program and the functionality of their mostly black Angus cow herd. “When you’re judging an animal, you don’t just think about when they are in the show ring. You have to think about how they can function in a cow herd.” Hogberg continued his explanation by describing that his values lie in soundness, body type, muscle, and overall look.
029
“You can go out there and win all the shows you want, but when you get back to the barn, what brings you all together? It’s the people. It’s the friendships. It’s the memories."
2011 marked the beginning of Hogberg’s show career. In just 7 short years, he has found success through his experiences and by watching accomplished fitters and cattlemen. It is Hogberg’s social skills that have helped him generate relationships and develop connections within the show industry. “I like going around shaking hands.” Hogberg mentioned. The Saskatchewan native was eleven years old when he first set his sights on two Kansas junior college livestock judging teams. The grade twelve student hopes to attend either Butler or Hutchinson Community College next fall. The dream of collegiate judging stems from having role models who are products of these programs. Hutchinson and Butler have both been popular destinations for Canadian judges over the years, and former team members have helped connect Hogberg with the judging team coaches. Hogberg applies his judging skills when selecting Bar H’s show string. Last fall, the family exhibited Bar H Cora 97D, who helped the Hogberg family capture their first Agribition Angus banner. She will return to the show string this fall with her April heifer calf at side, along with a March born bred Angus heifer, and potentially a Hereford heifer. Hogberg expressed his excitement at having the two-year-old pair in the ring again and his hopes for them as they attend the Canadian Western Agribition and Manitoba AG Ex this fall.

Although Hogberg has selected a competitive show string for this fall, to him, showing cattle is about the memories made in the barn. “You can go out there and win all the shows you want, but when you get back to the barn, what brings you all together? It’s the people. It’s the friendships. It’s the memories.” The social aspect of shows has always been appealing to Hogberg and has played a large role in his passion for the industry. Hogberg has been immersed in the American stock show culture since age 7 and says “My favorite show of all time would have to be the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO.” Although, Bar H Land and Cattle no longer takes cattle to Denver, Hogberg makes sure to bring his clippers and comb to help the other exhibitors. In the last few years, as a result of the relationships he has made by fitting for breeders at the National Western, he has had the opportunity to fit at other American shows. Since 2009, Hogberg has only missed one or two trips to the National Western Stock Show. Hogberg has had the opportunity to travel and fit cattle in the United States for some of the most competitive show cattle operations. When contrasting the American show environment to a Canadian outlook he mentioned that,

“In my world, my dad is the one who has gotten me to where I am today. I would be nobody if my dad was not Robin Hogberg.”
“To them (fitting) is a professional sport, not just a hobby.” He continued on to say that, “It’s raising the roof of expectations and knowledge.” His experiences have fueled his passion for grooming cattle and inspired him to take his fitting career in a similar direction. He encourages everyone to seek similar opportunities as it was a tremendous learning experience for him. “If you ever get the chance to go down there, just take a pen and a notebook with you.”
he hoped to leave behind, he expressed that “I want my legacy to be my dad’s, but with a twist of John...Every single time I walk out that door, I’m thinking ‘I want to be more like my dad.’” Hogberg hopes to be remembered for his character rather than his accomplishments, and went on to say that “I don’t want them to remember how many cattle shows I won because they are just banners. They’re just cloth. They do not define who you are.” Character is something Hogberg holds a lot of value in.
Despite all of the breed influencers and big names that Hogberg has had the “Your conduct, your character, and your privilege to work for and communicate conversation. Always keep those three with, it is his father that he admires the things in mind.” The “three C’s” are what most. “In my world, my dad is the one Hogbergommolor considers be his philosophy Top Pisti doluptam, alit, to sandam who has gotten me to where I am today. on life. For Hogberg, it is important that all of glory of his accomplishments are shared with those who have helped him along the way. “Everything I do, I give credit to my dad and my heavenly father… on the registration paper it may say ‘Bar H Land and Cattle’, but we are breeding cattle for the Lord.” He mentioned that his father instilled his Christian values and helped him become the Godly man that he is today. Last July, Hogberg got to attend the American Hereford junior national show with Jensen Brothers Herefords, where he observed a difference in adult participation in comparison to Canadian junior show regulations. In the United States, junior shows are more lenient towards parents assisting children with their projects and as to who is grooming animals, “It’s a family thing.”, he described American junior shows as.
“I want my legacy to be my dad’s, but with a twist of John...Every single time I walk out that door, I’m thinking ‘I want to be more like my dad.'"

To Hogberg, Canadian junior shows should be family orientated as well by allowing for more participation of family members regardless of age. “We were all once at that age where you have no idea what you’re doing. You’re scared and you don’t want to be scared by yourself. You would like to have that guardian figure there to help you and guide you and you can’t do that now-a-days.” First year showmen are often advised to seek experienced exhibitor’s help which Hogberg encourages. However, he also offers the idea that the senior exhibitors have their own cattle and without the help of others, may not have the “man power” to assist younger members as much as they would like. “It has really put a road block in front of the learning process of kids wanting to get involved.” He continued. Allowing for assistance from family members will benefit both juniors who are eager to learn, and seniors who are willing to teach. “Bring the family back to the junior shows,” Hogberg summarized. “Helicopter parents” or the use of professional fitters is a typical argument against Hogberg’s
034
suggestions. Canadian junior shows find it unclear as to how involved parents should be without interfering with the learning process junior shows provide. This played a large role in junior shows becoming limited to age 21 and younger. However, the benefits of learning from the experienced showmen is something Hogberg is passionate towards. “In the long term, the kids may not advance their skills unless they are paying close attention, but in the short term the animal is being presented well. I personally have benefited from working alongside my parents and professional fitters while attending junior functions in the United States,” Hogberg commented. The combination or work ethic, passion, and faith makes Hogberg an asset to the livestock community. His international experiences have helped him develop his cattleman skills and apply them to his own operation, making Bar H Land and Cattle a serious competitor on the show road. At just age seventeen, John Hogberg has his sights set on the future and making it as bright as possible for this industry.

Rancier crosses the Royal Winter Fair off his bucket list
W
hen you think back to your first time attending a fall major it is often for one of two reasons: to exhibit cattle or to experience the atmosphere amongst the crowd of spectators. However, for Killam native Garth Rancier, his first taste of the Royal Winter Fair will be a unique one. Rancier will participate in the show as the 2018 National Junior Beef Heifer Show judge.
070
Having bred, raised or shown 25 grand and reserve champions over the last 15 years between the Canadian Western Agribition and Farmfair International, there is no question that Garth Rancier is a qualified judge and trusted cattleman. “We have shown lots of cattle and have been pretty fortunate to have quite a few champions, he commented with pride.

WORDS BY TIA SCHRAM
Rancier Farms has taken home four trucks in total from Edmonton and will be on the hunt for more banners this fall as they hit the road to Edmonton and Regina once again. Rancier farms is a highly decorated breeder of primarily black Simmental and SimmAngus cattle. Rancier obtained his first Simmental in 2001 and has been a force in both the Simmental and

beef industry ever since. “We started out with a few Angus and made the switch to Simmental. We thought there was a lot of future in black Simmental cattle”, said Rancier. Having a household name in the Simmental industry, you may have never expected Rancier Farms to stem from an Angus beginning. The family operation focuses on selling bulls and select females in consignment sales throughout the year. Rancier farms is well known for their Simmental cattle and success in the show ring, as well as the impact they have had on Canadian genetics. “We built up from the Angus that we had and some of the cow families that we bought that allowed us to make Simmentals that were a bit different than what was already out there”, Rancier commented. Rancier’s judging experience stems from his
072
time on the Lakeland College judging team and “real world education.” He has attended shows across the continent to judge cattle, but he still credits his time in the junior programs for a lot of his success. “Growing up, I started out in 4-H and I always had a passion for cattle.” The fifth generation at Rancier farms is now entering the show scene and has already begun having tremendous success. Rancier’s children, Kade and Abby, both attended the 2018 Young Canadian Simmental Association National Classic this summer in Olds, AB. The Rancier kids captured grand and reserve champion novice aggregate titles at the national classic. Rancier notices his children are interested in cattle outside of the showring as well. “The kids help Angela (his wife) pick up the slack all the time when I’m gone with cattle to shows or judging or to sales.”

Ten-year-old Kade Rancier is very keen on showing and being involved in this industry. His father has pride in the values Kade has developed, and tells juniors that, “Every time you go in the ring, I think the most important thing is to listen to what the judge is saying and actually understand.”
As for the future, Rancier says, “We want to keep improving the genetics of our cow herd which will, in turn, help our customers be more profitable.” They intend to continue focusing on quality over quantity, while involving the next generation of Ranciers.
Rancier emphasized that their operation focuses on cow families and generating quality for multiple generations. “Always align yourself with breeders with lots of integrity and breeders that have breeding programs that support your goals.” He advises juniors to look for operations where the quality runs deep and their focus has been on a cow herd when selecting their 4-H or show prospects whether it be breeding or market cattle. “If you focus on quality you will be able to make a living out of it.”
Rancier tries to instill the importance of gracious show-ring conduct upon his kids. “Too often people get too wound up and don’t see the faults in their own cattle. I think that if you know their faults and the judge picks those out, you can’t be upset.” He went on to say, “The reward is pretty big when you work hard and quality cattle win.”
Top Stock Magazine / Winter 2018
It is Rancier’s belief that any junior who is willing to put in the effort can be successful in this industry, regardless of their background or budget. “I think the key is spending time with successful breeders,”
073
Rancier explained. He added that, “if you want to work hard in this field, there are always breeders who will work with you and I think that is a good place to start.” He credits experienced breeders like Lee and Dawn Wilson, and the time he spent learning from them with a lot of his success. Showing cattle is more than banners and buckles. It is an opportunity to market cattle and create lasting relationships with fellow breeders and producers. “It’s an awesome place to be able to market the cattle and get them in front of people… The best part is the people that you get to be around. The people at shows become like a family,” Rancier expressed. From a judging perspective, Rancier values functionality.
FAVOURITE SHOW YOU’VE JUDGED There have been lots of favorites. Anytime that there are good cattle, it is fun. I judged in Durango, Mexico last summer at the International Simmental show. That would be one of my favorites. I have had the chance to judge from coast to coast, including shows such as the National Charolais and Limousin shows, Expo Boeuf 2016, and the Farmfair International Black Angus show in 2012. “ 074
“If we focus on the production value of the cattle we are showing rather than solely the show aspect, I think the show industry will have more significance to the industry.” In his own operation, feet and udders are what they appreciate most. “I think that the commercial industry loses a little bit of faith when the show ring doesn’t place enough value on traits such as functionality and soundness.” Rancier tries to find a balance between the two worlds when he evaluates show cattle. He appreciates cattle having an overall look without compromising his values on functionality. Judging the National Junior Beef Heifer show is yet another accomplishment to add to Rancier’s resume and, this November Garth Rancier will be able to check attending the Royal Fair in Toronto off his bucket list.
ROLE MODELS AND HOW THEY AFFECTED YOU GROWING UP When I first started out, I clipped bulls with Lee Wilson and Rob Lundago, so I had the opportunity to go to lots of different breeder’s places and work sales. I think you pick up something from everybody, especially around sale time. I think there are lots of accomplished breeders that have been successful that I have learned from such as, Rob and Gail Hamilton. “ Top Stock Magazine / Winter 2018
WORDS OF ADVICE FOR JUNIORS “I think that the expression about showing breeding cattle rather than raising show cattle to breed is very true. Lots of times if you stick to the basics and pay more attention to what kind of a cow they’ll be instead of primarily purposing them to be a show heifer you will be a lot more successful. I was told when I started out that ‘it doesn’t matter how many banners you win, if you can’t sell them it won’t matter.’ “

ALL TIME FAVORITE COW/BULL
FAVORITE SHOW DAY TIP
RF Certainly Flirtin’ 202Z. She was the first Simmental cow to win the supreme at Regina and, she won the supreme at Edmonton. Her, her dam, and her great-grand dam all won the supreme at Edmonton. The cow family has been responsible for three trucks. “
We like to keep our cattle pretty natural. I think you are a lot farther ahead to keep the cattle natural-looking rather than go too far and make them look fake. My show day tip would be to continue working the body hair until you get into the ring.”
Top Stock Magazine / Winter 2018
WHAT WILL YOU BE LOOKING FOR ON SHOW DAY The cattle need to have some look, but at the same time they need to be functional. The complete package is what I will be looking for. In our breeding program we really strive for big bodied, sound cattle. They don’t need to be super pretty, but they do need to have some look.“
