easons greetings everyone! I hope this message finds you all happy and healthy and recovering from a successful fall show and sale run! I couldn’t be more excited with the successes and much deserved recognition our breed is receiving. From premium pricing at the auction mart to Supreme Champion wins in the show ring, Limousin is being appreciated for the superior terminal and phenomenal maternal traits that we have always known and loved about our breed. You as breeders should be proud of the product that you are offering this industry and know that your clients are happy. That bonus on their calf cheque will certainly solidify their decision to use Limousin, and will no doubt tempt their neighbours to consider switching!
and exchange trips to Australia, to fresh fundraising
I want to start by extending a huge congratulations to our General Manager, Tessa Verbeek, and her family, on the much-anticipated arrival of their little one. Tessa has been such an integral part of the success of our Association over the last several years and we couldn’t be happier for her and Colin and the expansion of the Hillview Farms crew! She will be leaving us in January and handing her position to the very capable hands of Laura Ecklund. My board and I have been working very closely with Tessa and Laura to ensure this transition will be as seamless as possible but with very large shoes to fill, your patience with Laura and all our staff, will be very much appreciated! Congratulations again Tessa and Colin!
of the membership. You may or may not agree with
Okay, lets talk about juniors! I want to say how proud I am of our Canadian Junior Limousin Association and how far they have taken this program over the last few years. This group of juniors have been so progressive in finding new and innovative ways to promote our breed to other kids and have so much fun in the mean time. From fantastic Impact shows
ideas, these juniors (with the help of their CJLA coordinator, Laura) have put their Association in the spotlight! Juniors from all over the country, and not just Limousin juniors, are taking notice of the CJLA and want a piece of the action! I have heard several of our juniors talk about how great their Association is, how they feel like their ideas are being heard and how it’s an intimate group where everyone feels included, and they can have fun and still be competitive at the same time. This all warms my heart, especially being an alumnus of the program myself. Which bring me to say this – these juniors are the lifeblood of our Association. They are our future, and I think it is of utmost importance to ensure they have the support me, but please believe me when I tell you that these juniors are watching you! They look up to each and every one of the CLA members to help guide them and give them direction. You may not know it, but some of you have even been raised to “celebrity” status in their mind. This can be very intimidating to a young person (and their family) coming into the breed, so I encourage you to keep that in mind. You might not have kids, or they are too young, or too old for the program, but I assure you it is still very important to support them and their program. Everyone knows this is as much a people business as a cow business, and one day they will become your client – they will want to deal with people who have supported them, mentored them, and treated them with care and respect. Respectfully yours,
Erin Kishkan CLA PRESIDENT

CLA OFFICE UPDATE
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
Tessa Verbeek
The Limousin breed was at the forefront of everyone’s minds this fall. Limousin influence calves topped fall feeder sales across the country, seedstock sales were very strong and the Limousin presence on the show road was felt throughout the barns! Every facet of our industry plays an important role in the vitality of the Limousin breed. This Christmas edition of the Limousin Voice magazine showcases the results of the 2018 show and fall sale season, culminating with the National Show and Sale at Canadian Western Agribition. Thank you to the Saskatchewan Limousin Association for hosting and special thanks to all of the exhibitors who attended, consigners and buyers in the National Sale and to the many volunteers and sponsors who contributed to making this a successful event. The breeding decisions, management, hard work and investment that goes into taking cattle out to shows to represent the Limousin breed is appreciated. We are especially proud of Greenwood’s repeat Alberta Supreme win, this time on the female side, with Greenwood Pld Ally 702A and calf Greenwood Flick PYN 62F being named Supreme Female over all breeds in the Alberta Supreme at Farmfair International! I would like to extend a very warm welcome to Laura Ecklund, who will be taking over as Interim General Manager for 2019 on a parttime basis as I depart in January for maternity leave. Laura has been with the CLA since 2016 in the role of Registry/Member Services Assistant and Canadian Junior Limousin Association Coordinator. Raised on a Limousin operation in Ontario, and an alumnus of the CJLA program,
Photo courtesy of Andrew Ranches, Youngstown, AB
Laura brings a tremendous passion for the Limousin breed and membership to the CLA. Laura and her husband, Cody, and their two young children, Sadie and Rhett, have recently moved to southeastern Alberta and she will be working remotely from home on a part-time basis. Laura is also continuing as the CJLA Coordinator. Additionally, I would like to welcome our new hire, Brenda Patterson, who will be starting in January. Brenda will be working full-time in the CLA office as Office Manager and Registry/ Member Services Assistant. As 2018 draws to a close, we remind you to please finish recording/registering your 2018 calf crop and get your performance records entered before year end. For those of you scanning your cattle this winter please remember that weaning weights must be entered before ultrasound results can be recorded. CLA OFFICE CLOSED FOR CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS
The CLA office will be closed December 24th to January 4th, re-opening on Monday, January 7th to serve our membership.

We have also developed a “Tag Supporter” logo that can easily be added to your sale catalogue or website. Contact info@limousin.com to receive a digital copy of either. • Please remember that only Limousin cattle that contain between 37.5% and 75% Limousin blood and 25% to 62.5% Black Angus or Red Angus blood, may be called Lim-Flex. Cattle that fall outside of these parameters should be described as Percentage Limousin in sales catalogues, not Lim-Flex.
Bull sale season is just around the corner, and as always, the CLA is here to assist you with tools to help you have a successful sale.
• Last but not least, please remember to complete DNA testing for animals that require it well in advance of your sale. Depending on the test requested, DNA turnaround time is typically between 4-6 weeks.
• Please remember that EPDs are now updating on a weekly basis and the most current EPDs can be found on an animal’s profile in DigitalBeef. It would be wise to inform your buyers of this in your bull sale catalogue, etc. Breed averages are available in the Percentile Ranks document on DigitalBeef – contact the CLA office if you need assistance in locating this.
The passion for the Limousin breed is as palpable today as I imagine it was in 1969, when the Canadian Limousin Association was first formed. As we look forward to celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Limousin in Canada for the entire 2019 year, let’s also take a look back and appreciate what the people of the past 50 years of Limousin have contributed to the breed and the Association.
• Catalogue downloads may be requested from the CLA to obtain pedigree and EPD information on sale cattle in an Excel document. We require an Excel file with only the registration numbers, not
On behalf of myself, your CLA Board of Directors and staff, we wish you a very Merry Christmas with family and friends and a prosperous New Year!

NOUVELLES DU BUREAU DE L’ALC
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018

BY / PAR
Tessa Verbeek

COMMERCIAL PROFILE
POPLARVIEW STOCK FARM N
ear the southwestern Manitoba community of Pipestone, you will find the thriving and sizeable Poplarview Stock Farm operation. As the 4th generation on the farm, Trevor Atchison, along with wife Melissa and children Reese and Wyatt farm alongside Trevor’s parents, Lloyd and Joan, as well as a niece Amanda Scott and nephew Tyler Scott who are also integral members of the farm. Lloyd and Joan first became involved in the Limousin breed in the early 1970’s when the breed was first imported into Canada. The breed has adapted well to the conditions in which they expect them to thrive in. After graduating high school, Trevor took over the management of the family’s cow herd over the next several years. Today, the Atchison family is calving 850 cows annually, which are owned by themselves and two partners. Currently, their steer calves are backgrounded at one of the partner’s operations and the heifers stay at Poplarview. Their steers are marketed direct to Wulf Cattle in Minnesota in early spring and the heifers are run on grass until mid-

summer and have also gone to Wulf Cattle for several years. They have 5,500 acres deeded and 4,000 acres of rented land and produce the majority of their own forage and grain. The farm celebrated being a century farm in 2005.

In addition to Limousin, the Atchison family also use LimFlex and have some females of other breeds including Angus. However, Trevor feels that the Limousin females, either purebred or Limousin influenced, have done the best for them. “They hold much better udder quality as the cows get older and have less structural problems of lameness and injuries as they age,” Trevor remarks, “We really noticed as the cows of other breeds we bought over the years increase in age, some issues affecting their longevity have become apparent.” When purchasing cattle, there are a number of things Trevor considers. While price is always a factor, it depends on where the animal will be used in their operation that determines what the animal is worth to Trevor. “I can’t stress enough the value of good, sound data. When a consumer buys something they want to know details about it and how that product will perform. The more details and the more accurate the detail and
Trevor is adamant about having as much information and data on the genetics they purchase as possible.
“I prefer to have performance and carcass EPDs and info, and the higher the accuracy the better,” Trevor goes on to say, “If a listing of bulls finds its way to me and it only has a birth weight and maybe a weaning weight and very little else, I usually flip through and look at the pictures but that’s about it.” When purchasing bulls, Poplarview is seeking a balance of carcass traits first, as they use the majority of their bulls as terminal sires. They had a higher focus on marbling in the past few years

information is, the more valuable the consumer thinks the item is if it has the attributes they want,” Trevor says, “That’s how I see genetic selection and the value of it. There are lots of tools available now such as carcass ultrasound scans, feed intake tests, and genomic testing that breeders need to be utilizing to prove the value they have in their genetics.”
and were able to add some higher marbling genetics to their herd so they are now placing more focus on yield and performance traits along with a moderate amount of marbling. Colour is not of great concern as they are marketing direct to the same buyer and that buyer is more focused on the finished carcass and the feed conversion to get them to the end point than what colour their hide is. In addition, they do select some bulls with a focus on maternal traits to mate them to mainly British cows for replacements. In their females, they look for cows to raise feeder calves so they need not be fancy but they must have sound udders and structure, be of moderate size and have enough capacity to maintain themselves on a high roughage diet. Above all, fertility still needs to be top priority as a major contributor to your bottom line. They also raise some of their own bulls and the females for that program are high performing, high yielding cows of moderate to medium size. When finished, their feeder cattle border on being too large of carcasses so the frame size of their cow herd is something they are being cognizant of.
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
22
“In short, the Limousin breed has brought high yielding, sound, efficient, functional, solid coloured cattle to our operation,” says Trevor, “The Limousin

breed brings unmatched high yielding carcasses that are produced as efficiently or more efficiently than any other breed. Coupled with their easy calving abilities and ability to withstand environmental conditions – they are the breed to compete. With recent changes in how some packers are paying with more focus on yield and a little less on certain quality attributes such as marbling, the Limousin breed can produce that either in a straight bred or cross bred situation.” Furthermore, Trevor has this to say of the Limousin breed’s docility, “The docility of the Limousin breed is second to none. My basis for saying that comes from experience of having a lot of different breeds and crosses of different breeds. Docility issues are in every breed. The Limousin breed has made great strides in improving the docility of the breed through culling and using genetic tools such as EPDs.”
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
Plans for the future at Poplarview Stock Farm include expanding the operation to fill the land base they have and to allow the future generations to also become a part of the operation. Labour constraints are currently keeping the farm at status quo as the next generation matures and decides if farming will be their path in life. The operation is far from stagnant, however, as Trevor has invested time in attending numerous seminars and other learning opportunities that have leant to better grazing practices, economic management, and continual betterment of the operation.
24
Coming from one of our breed’s greatest commercial supporters, these closing words from Trevor should be heard by all Limousin breeders. “I encourage breeders to keep doing what they have done to improve the traits of the breed that industry needs. I encourage them to keep it going strong and embrace the tools and technologies that are available to help them make the breed stronger.”

IGS Genetic Evaluation Team and Consultants
DNA profiles provide additional information about the genetic merit of a DNA tested animal and increase the accuracy of EPDs, which are called Genomic Enhanced EPD or GE-EPDs. In the IGS Single-step process, the DNA marker genotypes are directly incorporated into the genetic evaluation along with the phenotypes (performance data) and the pedigree. As a result, the DNA information has an impact not only on the genotyped individual, but also on all the relatives of that genotyped individual. This allows for the DNA information to improve the accuracy of non-genotyped relatives.
DNA tested young animal is equivalent to the average BIF accuracy of a non-genotyped sire with 21, 22 and 24 calves with observed phenotypes for birth, weaning and yearling weights, respectively (Figure 1, where a horizontal line cross a curve for a specific trait (e.g. red line and blue curve cross each other at the data point correspond to y(accuracy)=0.46) and x(progeny)= 21 for birth weight)). The progeny equivalent (PE) for direct calving ease was 15 and it was only 3 for total maternal calving ease due to limited genotypes on cows. The PE for milk and stayability were 18 and 25, respectively (Figure 1).
To measure the impact of DNA information on accuracies of GE-EPDs in the IGS Singlestep genetic evaluations, we compared the average BIF accuracies of GE-EPDs of DNA tested young animals (born in 2016 with no progeny) to the average BIF accuracies of nongenotyped sires born in 2010-2014. Only sires with non-genotyped calves were used for this comparison. We found that the average BIF accuracy of GE-EPD for a
The Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT is a breakthrough in GE-EPD accuracy improvement. Enabling technologies such as BOLT software allow for even faster genetic progress with more accurate EPDs earlier in an animal’s life. We (IGS) are dedicated to using the best available technology to deliver more accurate GE-EPDs to our members so they have the best tools available for their selection decisions.

LIMOUSIN A JUNIOR'S PERSPECTIVE

Laura & Nicole Scott of Spare Time Livestock.

Laura & Nicole Scott of Spare Time Livestock have excelled in the Junior Limousin program.
L
aura and Nicole Scott are long standing CJLA members who have competed in junior events across Canada. Together with their parents, Don and Donna Scott and younger brother Joe, they operate Scott Farms of Oxford Mills, Ontario, of which Spare Time Livestock is a division. They calve a herd of about 20 cows – consisting of purebred animals, as well as Limousin influence females. In addition, they also crop just under 1,000 acres of corn, soybeans, spring wheat and hay. The farm has been in the family name for almost 100 years, but has not always been raising Limousin. When Laura and Nicole's great grandfather purchased the farm, the family ran a dairy operation. As their grandparents took over, they shifted the operation to be a 100 head commercial cow-calf operation with only a couple hundred acres of crop land. Since their Dad and uncle took over the farm, they have reduced the commercial cow herd and expanded the cropping operation. Over the past 15 years, they have been transitioning that commercial cow herd to purebred Limousin.
“Limousin has its place here and around the globe, and has done a fine job proving itself to breeders. They are competitive both on the hook and around the show ring, and the last few years have done nothing but further prove that,” remarks Laura, “Breeders should be proud of what we have accomplished. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the breed in Canada, where we will be able to demonstrate how far we have come, and how we can advance the breed to be even more competitive.” Laura and Nicole credit the entire Homer family as their mentors in the Limousin breed, “Our first few years as junior and 4-H members we went from show to show with the Homer’s, all across the province. They taught us how to show, how to fit, how to
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
When asked why they chose the breed the answer was simple, “Limousin are easy to love animals. They are extraordinarily maternal, the calves they raise are high producers, and they are some of the most docile cattle in Canada. Limousin cattle are resilient, versatile animals that we are proud to be raising.”

socialize. Our parents are our biggest supporters, from making sure that we get to where we need to be, making sure that we’re prepared for whatever may come at us and of course cheering us on while standing ringside,” said Laura and Nicole. Laura just finished a 4-year bachelors degree, majoring in Food, Agriculture and Resource Economics. She has always planned to stay involved in agriculture. Upon graduating this past spring, she accepted a full-time position as an Agronomist at a crop input company less than fifteen minutes from home. This has allowed her to work off the farm, as well as still be very involved with the day-to-day operations. Nicole is in her second year of the Animal Science Technology program at Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alta. Her second year will be largely focused on the Student Managed Farm Purebred Beef Team. She is still highly involved in the decisions made on the farm at home, even while being far away, and it is without a doubt that her future will be in the agriculture industry. Their brother Joe is currently attending the University of Guelph Ridgetown

Both girls will admit that working with a sibling can be challenging, “They’re on your team, and they are always there to help, but at the same time, both of us are very strong willed, so it’s easy to forget we both have the same end goal, just different ways of doing things. I wouldn’t trade working with my sister for anything, though,” notes Laura. Laura first joined the CJLA in 2007 and Nicole in 2011. They feel that both the CJLA and the CLA do an excellent job of allowing the two organizations and the individuals involved in them to interact and get to know one another, “We like how they allow juniors to watch how the adult organization runs while still allowing the juniors to do a lot of the work for the CJLA. It is also highly appreciated
how the CJLA has begun to interact with international organizations through creating exchange programs and offering opportunities to travel abroad,” said Laura and Nicole. As the Limousin junior program grows there is a lot of excitement within the CJLA. Laura and Nicole have the following advice for younger members starting out, “The best advice we can offer to junior members coming up through the program is to get out there and participate. Go to the junior shows – you only have so many to compete in. Participate in the events at the shows, get to know the members, both older and younger than you. Get to know their parents, and the CLA board. All of these people are going to help create the biggest and strongest network you could imagine. Limousin breeders are some of the friendliest, and most outgoing people we know, so don’t be afraid to stick your hand out and introduce yourself.”

CANADIAN JUNIOR LIMOUSIN ASSOCIATION 1
What a great year 2018 has been for the CJLA! There is a lot we can be grateful for as a junior association and a lot to be excited about in the future. The CJLA awarded one $500 Scholarship this year to Nicole Scott of Oxford Mills, Ont. Scholarships are chosen by a committee each fall and are awarded based on involvement in the breed, the CJLA and general leadership experiences. The number of scholarships and the amounts are determined by the CJLA Board and is based on financial availability for the year. The CJLA Board has been busy this fall preparing and advertising their heifer CJLA Foxy Lady 1F for the show season and Solid Gold Sale. It takes many people to make the Donation Female Program happen. We would like to take this time to thank Plains Limousin for halter breaking the heifer, preparing her for the fall show season and stalling her at the first two shows. CJLA Foxy Lady 1F was exhibited at Lloydminster Stockade Roundup, Farmfair International and Canadian Western Agribition. Thank you to the Alberta Limousin
Association, Ontario Limousin Association and Saskatchewan Limousin Association for paying her show entry fees. Thank you to Martin Cattle Services for their hoof trimming services and to Masterfeeds for sponsoring signage for the shows. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Anchor B Limousin for looking after the heifer at Agribition. She sold in the Solid Gold Sale at Agribition for $4,500 to B Bar Cattle. The CJLA would sincerely like to thank Eric Boon for his continued support of the junior program. The money raised from the sale of the heifer will go towards scholarships and opportunities for CJLA members. Looking ahead to 2019 we would like to invite you to attend the Canadian Junior Limousin Impact Show in Saskatoon, Sask. July 18-21. We are looking forward to a fun week of friendship amongst our Limousin juniors.

REPORT
CONNOR RODGER AWARDED UK EXCHANGE
At the end of August, Katie Elmhirst, Travis Fulford, and I had the opportunity to go on an exchange to the United Kingdom through the National Junior Beef Heifer Show. Over the course of eight days we toured many farms, businesses, attended and exhibited in the Young Show Stars Competition, and took in the many sights within London.
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
The first couple of days consisted of the group settling in at Melview Angus to prepare our heifers for the Young Show Stars Competition, and a couple of tours. We toured the herds of Angus, Murray Grey, and Shorthorns at Melview and the herd of Westwood Herefords which was grazed under an apple orchard.
34
The Young Show Stars Competition consisted of ringcraft (showmanship), stock judging of commercial Limousin steers, overall presentation, clipping and fitting, an industry quiz, and an interview. The style of the show was much the same as the National Junior shows held here in Canada which made for a very enjoyable experience and allowed Team Canada a thirdplace finish. On the fifth day of the trip we went in to London via train which was quite the experience. The train ride was two hours and, on the way, we got to see a lot of the countryside which was very enjoyable. We arrived at Paddington Station and bought tickets for the double decker bus tours around London. The major landmarks we visited

were the Tower of London, the London Eye, and Buckingham Palace. Of course, we saw a lot along the way including the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, cathedrals, monuments, and Baker’s Street, to name just a few. We also took a ferry ride up the Thames River to see London from a different perspective. For the remainder of the trip we toured farms and local companies in the Southwestern region of the UK. We had a tour of Glympton Estates, which boasts a top herd of Angus as well as Scotch Mule sheep, and an authentic Scot for a herdsman who was a blast. The next tour was of Stanford Park Shorthorns, which had recently built brand new facilities and had ditched quite a bit of land to make viable pasture. The last tour was of the Dinmore Estate which is one of the top Limousin breeders in the UK. Dinmore raises bulls and replacement heifers and have set records for top selling beef animals within the UK. It’s hard to put into words the grandeur of the United Kingdom. From the iconic hedge-flanked, winding roads to the vast history of the country. Everywhere we went, there was something of historical significance that was much older than our country itself and that is very humbling. In fact, the original part of the home we stayed was built in the early 1400’s. I can’t thank everyone enough for this experience, especially the Canadian and Ontario Junior Limousin Associations for their sponsorship.

MASTERFEEDS The Masterfeeds Show Cattle of the Year Awards recognize the top show bull, top show female, top show sire and top show dam for that year as determined by a point system based on placings at qualifying shows. In order to qualify for points a show must have a minimum of 30 head of Limousin cattle. In addition, Limousin animals who win a Supreme Champion title at a show with a minimum of 30 head of cattle of any breed receive additional points. The Canadian Limousin Association and our members sincerely thank Masterfeeds for their support of this program! Congratulations and thank you to all Limousin breeders who invested the time and resources into showing their cattle this year. You represented the breed very well at shows across the country, and your efforts shine a very positive light on the Limousin breed, for which everyone benefits.

SPECIAL REPORT
LIMOUSIN FEMALE CLAIMS SUPREME LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
T
he Limousin breed has long been noted as the breed of choice if selecting a sire to use over a British based cowherd. No other continental breed can boast the calving ease, new calf vigour and efficiency that the Limousin breed brings to the table. Limousin is also widely noted across all breeds for its exceptional muscling, lean meat yield and longevity. However, the Limousin female should not be overlooked. The maternal strength of the Limousin female is being capitalized on by producers across the country. In a crossbreeding scenario, Limousin influence cows typically hold themselves together structurally for longer, and their hardy adaptability allows them to withstand
harsh conditions and minimal management. From the pasture to the show ring, the Limousin female is being recognized by astute cattlemen as an admirable piece of the Canadian beef herd. The Payne family of Greenwood Limousin & Angus, Lloydminster, Sask. know full well the valuable traits that their Limousin females contribute to their herd. Scott and Jackie Payne, along with sons Jayden and Jaxon, have been raising some of the countries winningest Limousin cattle. Scott’s parents, Bernard and Mona Payne, were some of the earliest members of the Canadian Limousin Association, and were in the thick of things when the breed was new to Canada in the 1970’s. On November 10, 2018, the

LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
"TO WIN THE FEMALE SIDE OF THE ALBERTA SUPREME WAS A MASSIVE GOAL FOR OUR FAMILY." Greenwood operation added another, very special, banner to their collection and drove away from the Alberta Supreme in a new Dodge Ram truck thanks to Greenwood Pld Ally 702A and her heifer calf Greenwood Flick PYN 62F. A repeat win for the family who raised and co-owned (along with Nordal Limousin & Angus, Simpson, Sask.) the 2017 Alberta Supreme Champion Bull, Greenwood Canadian Impact ET. Greenwood animals have stood in the Top 5 and Top 10 at Stockade Roundup, Farmfair International and Canadian Western Agribition countless times. “Dreams come true!” Jackie exclaims about their win, “We have always enjoyed showing pairs and showing other breeders and the public the kind of cows we have. To win the female side of the Alberta Supreme was a massive goal for our family. To do it back to back is surreal.” Unlike most show cows, who typically have had a lengthy show career under their belt by the time they come to town as a mature pair, Greenwood Pld Ally 702A was only broke to lead this year – at 5 years old.
Jackie goes on to say, “She didn’t love being a show cow but the more time we put into her the quieter she got. Ally is proof the docility stigma our breed still suffers with is a falsity that needs to be put to rest.” Greenwood offered half interest in Greenwood Flick PYN 67F in the National Limousin Solid Gold Sale at Canadian Western Agribition. Rob Garner of Nordal Limousin & Angus, along with his grandson, Henry Michelson, purchased half interest for $15,500 – the sale topping price. As for Greenwood Pld Ally 702A, she will be incorporated into the Greenwood donor program in 2019, with the goal of producing as many Ally progeny as possible and sharing her genetics with the Limousin breed.
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
“Ally has always been a cow we admired and wanted to show and flush,” Jayden says, “She gave us a special heifer calf, so we thought it was our chance to do it.”

LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
44 "THE LIMOUSIN BREED NO LONGER NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT AS A PATERNAL BREED."
As the first Limousin female to win supreme honours in the Alberta Supreme, the Payne family appreciates the recognition this is bringing to the Limousin breed, “Simply put, we will get more people paying attention to the high-quality cattle the breed is exhibiting as we become more of a threat at an all breeds level. The more eyes on the Limousin breed the better.” There were plenty of eyes on the Limousin breed this fall with RPY Paynes Dillinger 43D raised and owned by Payne Livestock, Lloydminster, Sask. with co-owners Spring Water Ranching, LaValla Limousin and McAlpin Livestock making the Top 5, in the hunt for the Alberta Supreme title at Farmfair International. Both RPY Paynes Dillinger 43D and Greenwood Pld Ally 702A also stood in the Top 10 at the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge at Canadian Western Agribition. Beyond the show ring, the Greenwood females really do go to work, “We love the calving ease and mothering ability of our Limousin cows. Udder quality and fertility is improving immensely with genetic selection and the Limousin breed no longer needs to be looked at as a paternal breed. You can't beat a good crossbred Limousin cow.”
“The list of people to thank is endless. First of all, we thank all the Canadian fall shows organizers and volunteers for giving us a stage to display our cattle. Farmfair is truly a world class event and the international connections we have made are exciting. Thank you to Dodge Ram and Northlands for the incredible sponsorship. Thank you to our friends and family for being the best supporters and cheerleaders. Lastly, thank you to our crew that gets all the behind the scenes work done. Everything from chores at home to fitting at the show; wouldn't be possible without you. Our crew feels like our family and we appreciate each and every one so much. They treat our cattle like they own them, just simply the best.” As the Limousin breed prepares to celebrate 50 years of Limousin in Canada during 2019 – this repeat Supreme win puts a golden cap on the 2018 show season! While your bottom line is based on the production merit of your herd, not just the banners on your wall, it is exciting to see that the Limousin breed is being recognized as being able to ‘get it done’ against all breeds in the show ring and in production.
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
Like all seedstock breeders, the Greenwood operation will continue striving to exceed the success they have already carved out for themselves. To see a family who has worked so hard, for so long, finally reaching their goals is inspiring for producers across all breeds. It also took a team effort to make it happen,

BEYOND BELIEF
THE FIRST SEMEN TO BE OFFERED ON THIS GREAT BREEDING BULL
SEMEN SELLS IN THE NEW YEARS RESOLUTION SALE
DEC. 31, 2018
SYES Beyond Belief was a member of the 2015 Reserve Champion Pen of Bulls at the Denver Stock Show for Symens Brothers. This homo polled black herd bull is siring progeny that are deep sided, soft made, long spined and extremely impressive. The performance numbers will impress, as his weaning and yearling EPDs are in the Top 1% of the breed. In the 2017 and 2018 Solid Gold Limousin sales, Bohrson Marketing Services selected a bull and heifer each year sired by Beyond Belief to highlight the Agribition sale. We are pleased to make this first opportunity to share semen on this great breeding bull.

FUTURE OF THE BREED
MURRAY HILL FARM
The name Murray Hill Farm has a bit of a story behind it. Jeff and Denise were living 4 hours away, and had decided to come back to Blackstock to help Jeff’s father with the farm. They purchased a 50-acre parcel of pastureland a short distance from the home farm. The land had belonged to Jeff’s grandfather, Murray Byers. The pasture had too many hills to crop easily and the soil was lighter and better suited to grazing, so it had been rented to local beef farmers for many years after Jeff’s father got out of the cattle business. Jeff and Denise built a new home atop the highest point on the property with views for miles. Denise started a market garden and raised chickens and Bershire/Tamworth pigs on pasture and Jeff sharecropped the home farm with his father. Jeff’s home farm still held its name, Byersdale, so

urray Hill Farm may be relatively new to the Limousin seedstock business, but in fact, the Byer’s family has some history with the breed. Jeff Byers is the 5th generation to be farming the family’s land near Blackstock, Ont., which was originally acquired in the mid-late 1800’s. Jeff’s parents had crops on owned and rented land, raised 200 pigs and operated a beef cattle feedlot. Jeff grew up participating in 4-H and junior farmers. He would often seek out Limousin influenced calves from the family’s feedlot to use as his project. After attending Kemptville College for field crop and livestock management, Jeff left the family farm to explore other careers and eventually developed a thriving carpentry business. Denise did not come from a farming community but always had a love for large animals, gardening and the outdoors and channeled that into her work as a watercolour artist with a focus on botanicals. The call of the farm was never far away for Jeff and upon meeting Denise through their local archery club, the pair has since returned to the family farm to help Jeff’s father, Jim, operate the cash-crop business in addition to their own pursuits – the likes of which has included buying a parcel of the family farm to call their own.

LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
Jeff and Denise named their operation down the road Murray Hill Farm in honour of Jeff’s grandfather. Fast forward three years and Jeff and Denise are now living at the home farm but have brought their Murray Hill Farm name with them as it was already used in much of their marketing and branding. The operation currently consists of a 100-acre home farm parcel and another 50 acres of rented land. In addition to their local carpentry business, Byers Carpentry, their farming enterprises include cash crops, market gardens, a small orchard, laying hens and their purebred Limousin breeding herd. Between them, Jeff and Denise have three children – daughter Leslie (22), son Alex (20), and youngest daughter Bianca (16). Bianca is one of the driving forces behind their purebred Limousin herd. Although she was never exposed to farming life early on, by the time she was 13 she knew she wanted to be a farmer and showed a real affinity for cattle. When the family initially moved to Blackstock, Bianca expressed a desire to show cattle and Jeff’s father suggested that Brian and Holli Lee of Hollee Limousin, only a mile down the road, would be happy to teach her. The Byers family went to Brian and Holli’s for a visit and when Brian took them out to the cattle Bianca immediately connected with a bull calf by the name of Hollee’s Dukes of Hazzard and a heifer named Hollee’s Daisy Duke. In 2016, Bianca won Champion Junior Showperson at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair with Hollee’s Daisy Duke on the halter. She continues to work and show for Brian and Holli today.
"LIMOUSIN HAS THE ABILITY TO BE THE BREED THAT MAKES OTHER BREEDS BETTER."
69
“We would not be doing this if it were not for Brian and Holli. They have taught us so much and continue to support us as we try to grow,” Denise states, “When the opportunity came up to buy our first bred females from them, we jumped in feet first and were rewarded with some of the best females representing Hollee’s best cow families.”
“I am amazed at how many people still immediately refer to Limousin cattle as crazy,” Denise goes on to say, “We have absolutely no issues with our kids working with our cattle – keeping in mind respect no matter what animals or breed they are around.” Furthermore, Jeff says, “I feel that the Limousin breed has taken an undeserved back seat to some of the other popular breeds. Limousin is integral and vitally important to the cattle industry and has the ability to be the breed that makes other breeds better. I really believe that it will keep on increasing in popularity as
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
The Byers list performance, calving ease and mothering ability as some of the main traits Limousin contributes to the beef industry. While the odd bent gate reminds Jeff’s father Jim of the times when Limousin steers in the feedlot made good on their reputation of having unfavourable docility, Jeff and Denise wish that more people could overcome this stigma and see the breed for what it is today.
70
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
feedlot operators and commercial cattlemen continue to recognize their value in terms of feed efficiency and carcass quality and the stigma of the ‘crazy Limo’ is put to rest.” As their operation progresses, the Byers family would like to develop a purebred herd of 30 breeding females with a focus on performance, longevity, and maternal strengths such as milk and mothering ability. They do not have room for a large number of cattle so instead desire to breed for quality instead and provide Bianca with the opportunity to increase her involvement in the business over the next 10 years. While the past 10 years have been a triumph in their own right–moving a total of 7 times and building 3 houses themselves in addition to relocating their businesses–having Jeff return to the family farm to do what he loves and
enabling possibility for the next generation is their biggest triumph. In addition to their farming pursuits, Jeff hopes to have a woodworking shop up and running this winter where he can continue to create custom furniture. Denise hopes to soon have time to revisit her passion for creating artwork, now with a focus on farm life and Limousin cattle. For the Byers family, it is not only the cattle, but also the people they have met along their journey as new Limousin breeders, that has fueled their passion for continuing with the breed. “The folks at the CLA and the CJLA have been fantastic and walk us through all the ins and outs involved with purebred cattle,” says Denise, “and we are constantly meeting wonderful breeders and people in the industry.”

DEVELOPING REPLACEMENT ANIMALS As weaning time wraps up many producers start looking at their replacement pens and it becomes decision time as to what we are going to do with the cattle. Many heifers and bulls will need to be brought along further to hit the targets needed to be ready to breed this spring. Whether replacement animals are getting ready for sale or for in herd use, both situations require animals to be managed for optimal performance. Heifers will need to be developed into functional cows and bull calves into fertile males. Over the course of this article we will look at the key factors into developing bulls, with many of the same principals being applied to replacement heifers.
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
When it comes to developing bull calves into breeding bulls many things need to be considered. Frame, muscle, testicles, and fat all come to mind. From a feed perspective we can manage a lot of these factors, but some of them boil down to genetics. When it comes to feed, feed can help express the characteristic, but won’t be able to create anew.
72
Frame is generally linked to the protein levels of the total diet going to the animal. To add more frame to a bull generally higher protein levels can optimize that animal’s genetics but if the animal lacks the genes to be large framed this might not get them to where you think you are going. But of course, as with everything, staying focused on just one trait or characteristic of a diet often means things can get off balanced quick. Other factors influencing the growth of bulls is the energy of the diet. Many producers will push a lot of energy to the bulls and reduce the fiber and roughage component down. This can work but looking forward to what we want from a breeding bull that must travel over a lot of pasture, this will be counter intuitive. For many producers getting the replacement stock properly grown out can be challenging.
Growing the bulls out fast and laying lots of fat down on them can leave them with fat reserves that are difficult to maintain and will result in animals that lose a lot of weight on pasture. The best results can be achieved when the bulls are exercised and built up over a longer period. To grow bulls out think of it as more of a long-distance race. Come out the gate too hot and there won’t be enough left in them at the end. But remember it is still a race and they need to keep pace to become breeding pieces this spring. If you steadily build them over the fall and winter they can go the distance to become great herd sires. This is not to say they we shouldn’t feed high energy feeds, it is to say that we should think about when the right time is to use them and for how long. Starting early will lead to the best results. When developing bulls out, trace minerals get to become of the utmost importance. Minerals that help within the bull for reproductive success and development are selenium, zinc, and copper. These are important when it comes to overall health of the animal as well as the other mineral elements. An animal that is sick will find it very difficult to reproduce. Selenium levels have been shown to increase testicle size in bulls and source of selenium can further increase size. Sources like Selplex are proven to help with development and production of sperm in bulls and are a must in development rations for high quality bulls. Both zinc and copper are important from a spermatogenesis standpoint. These elements are important but when it comes to mineral everything in balance is important. Just adding more in the diets does not guarantee success. For more details on developing your bulls out please contact your local Masterfeeds representative.
Merry Christmas & all the best in 2019 FROM ALL OF US AT EXCEL RANCHES. Thank you to everyone who supported and showed interest in our program this past year.

ONTARIO 500 LB FEEDER STEER PRICE
CDN $/CWT
Manager/Senior Analyst, Canfax
MARKET REPORT
74
In Ontario, calf prices have followed a similar pattern to Alberta as prices have been relatively flat through the year, and the price for 550 lb steers has averaged about $6/cwt above last year at $216/cwt. Calf prices are always influenced by the cattle futures and the Canadian dollar, as well as feed costs and basis levels, but it is also important to follow profitability at the feedlot level. Profitable feedlots will be much more supportive to the calf and feeder market relative to feedlots that are selling cattle at a loss.
The cattle feeding sector has not been particularly profitable over the last year. While there have been some cattle which have turned profits at times, margins have been generally negative. Many of the fed cattle being marketed this fall have a break-even cost in the low to mid $150’s/cwt. FEEDLOT PROFIT / LOSS MARGIN YEARLING STEER
FED STEER $/CWT
Canadian calf prices traded in a non-typical very narrow range for most of this year. The spring market was somewhat disappointing as there was no typical spring rally for calves or fed cattle. That said, summer prices were somewhat better than expected despite larger North American cattle supplies, and dry conditions. From the beginning of May through to mid-October, Alberta 550 lb steer prices ranged between $220/cwt and $230/cwt. The lowest price this year was set at $210.88/ cwt during the first week of April, and the highest price was $234.22/ cwt during the third week of February. This year, 550 lb Alberta steer prices have averaged $224.20/cwt, compared to $220.72/cwt over the same time period last year. This year’s average price comes in about $5/ cwt below the five-year average. At the time of writing, during the peak of the fall run, calf prices were challenging the annual low, with risk of calf prices moving lower, as volumes continued to be ample, feed costs continue to be a concern, and many feedlots were lacking space to place more calves. Prices across Western Canada were relatively even, with prices at times in Manitoba at a premium to Saskatchewan and Alberta as eastern Canadian feedlot demand supported that market.

Fed cattle prices have improved from their summer lows, but will need to rally further in order for feedlots to break-even. There is also risk moving forward, as the break-even price for yearlings put on feed this fall have break-evens that increase significantly from current levels. In

fact, the break-even price for yearlings placed against the first quarter of 2019 are at the highest level since 2016. Breakevens in the first quarter are as high as $168/cwt, and keep in mind the highest monthly average price in 2018 was only $165/cwt. Therefore, prices in early 2019 will have to surpass this year’s high just for feedlots to break-even. On the other hand, from the 2017 fall low of $133/cwt, to the 2018 spring high, fed prices rallied 24%. This year, the summer/fall low was $142.67. A rally of 24% from this level would bring fed prices near $177/cwt, which would bring strong profit levels to the feeding sector if this could be achieved. Fed prices have been slow to rally this fall. Higher break-evens moving forward add risk to the feeding sector, and ultimately adds risk to the feeder market if feedlots continue to market cattle at a loss. It will be important to monitor the strength in the fed cattle market over the next few months and into the spring of 2019, as it will determine margins at the feedlot sector and will set the market tone for feeder prices into 2019.

L
ynn Dee Ray Ltd. is owned by Kevin Hickle and operated with his wife Cindy and parents, Ray and Donna. The ranch is now home to the 5th generation as Kevin and Cindy have three sons, Tyson, Ryley and Carsen and daughter, Katie, who are starting to learn the ropes. In 1911 John Hickle, Kevin’s great grandfather, came to Canada from Kewanna, Indiana. Three years later John moved his family to the farm, where Kevin currently resides, and began life on the family farm, which has now been in the family for 104 years. From there John divided his farm between his son, Ralph, and a grandson that John and his wife Isobelle had raised. Ralph continued to grow the farm large enough that he was able to divide it again between his three sons, Gary, Stan, and Ray. Ray then expanded and split the farm for a third time between Kevin and his brother Travis. There are four descendants that ranch in the Hanna, Alta. area including Kevin, his brother, and their two cousins. Kevin has a wide spread background working in the agriculture industry. After high school he attended Olds College and took Agricultural Mechanics. Upon graduating, he worked overseas in New Zealand on an organic sweet corn and sheep farm for 6 months, and also in Australia for 10 months working on a sorghum and cattle ranch, with the addition of completing some custom combining before returning home. Once home, Kevin worked at the Alberta Wheat Pool Elevator and also as a lumberjack clearing lines before returning to the family ranch in 2000. Kevin and Cindy were married in 2005 and have been working to improve the ranch since. It hasn’t always been easy. Having just split the farm and coming into ranching right before BSE, the following years of low cattle prices, meant the money was not always there to afford the bulls they wanted in their operation. The Hickle’s feel that one of their

78 "I FEEL WE GET A PREMIUM FOR THE QUALITY OF THE MEAT DUE TO THE ADDED MUSCLE AND THE LEAN CARCASS." biggest successes is that they are now in a position to buy good quality Limousin bulls to improve their calf crop. Lynn Dee Ray Ltd. runs about 250 cow/calf pairs, while growing their own hay and cropping a couple of quarter sections of grain that they use for feed. The Hickle’s commercial cow herd is varied, however, Kevin tends to prefer a Charolais type cow bred to a Limousin bull.
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
Kevin notes, “It helps produce a heavier calf due to the muscle growth when crossed with a Limousin bull, as I generally sell in the late fall and do not usually feedlot them for the winter, and some types of cattle need longer to put the weight on in the hip.” The benefits that the Limousin breed has brought into the Hickle’s herd include calving ease, extra muscle development, and growth rate. Kevin appreciates that Limousin are able to produce smaller calves at birth that quickly gain the extra muscle to result in a nice looking, sizeable calf come fall. Kevin also lists docility and quick rate of gain as traits that have drawn him to the Limousin breed. Especially with a young family working around the cattle herd, having quiet cows and bulls is of high importance.
“Years ago,” Kevin says, “I would not have been comfortable with my children working with the cattle but in the last several years I have been able to find Limousin bulls that are more docile and I definitely feel more comfortable with my children being able to work with the cattle.” Their goals for their operation parallel the traits they are seeking as they are striving to improve the safety and efficiency of the processes involved in raising cattle. Their children are also starting to take on a more active role with the cattle and their oldest son and daughter are participating in beef 4-H. Despite being 25 miles to town, Kevin, Cindy and their children all love the farm life and the tight knit community that they continue to enjoy – something not every rural Alberta community can boast. They know that if there is ever a need the neighbours will always be there to help. In terms of the future of the Limousin breed, in Kevin’s eyes, “They are competing on the upper end of the beef market. I feel we get a premium for the quality of the meat due to all the added muscle and the lean carcass that they produce. I believe Limousin will be in the upper end of the market as the breeders are continually improving the genetics of the breed.”

Thank you also to our judges Cole and Jill Harvie who did an excellent job sorting through the cattle. As well as Wayne and Anne Burgess, Annie Christensen, and Alana Norris for making sure the show ran smoothly and Jackie Payne for not only being our Barn Boss but for being our Bonanza Committee Rep as well. LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
It's hard to believe another year has come and gone, and while it hasn’t been long since last time we wrote an update we certainly have lots of exciting news to share. To say Farmfair International was a success would be a great understatement. Limousin were very well represented and people were definitely taking notice. Having two pairs and two bulls vying for the Supreme title and having one of them bring it home for the Limousin gives us all a lot to be proud of! In total we had 11 exhibitors in the Limousin barn and we would like to thank each and every one of them for coming out: Blueberry Farms, Boss Lake Genetics, Canadian Junior Limousin Association, DC Farms, Excel Ranches, Greenwood Limousin, Highland Stock Farms, Hillview Farms, Nikiforuk Farms, Payne Livestock, and Plains Limousin

NEWS SASKATCHEWAN 1

Greetings from Saskatchewan! Well, 2018 will go down in the history books as a year of extremes. There was extreme heat, extreme storms, extreme smoke from forest fires (which probably helped save some crops and feed, oddly enough), extreme wet in some parts of the province and extreme dry in areas of the province. Harvest for many was a long, painful, drawn out process. However, hopefully everyone was able to fill bins, feed yards and silage pits to make the winter easier on our cattle.
A special thank you to Rebecca Martens who organized, setup and looked after the SLA booth at CWA. It was the perfect showcase for our breed, and many mouths and bellies appreciated the wonderful goodies you had set out! Thank you!
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
It’s an exciting time to be part of the Limousin breed. Calf prices are steady and Limousin calves are in high demand. Be sure to send calf price information to our CLA so they can report back to members on local markets.

This year our board has decided to change the fundraising for the SLA and junior boards. As many people know, provincial boards are elected volunteers that try, on a very limited budget, to give the best representation, updated information to and feedback from our provincial members. To do this effectively requires funding. This year at CWA the SLA tried something new. Through donations, the board acquired various silent auction items. The lots were on display at the SLA booth and the SLA Facebook page. Successful bidders were announced at CWA. Items were varied (Christmas is coming!) and we as a board were so pleased that people took the time to view and place bids! All monies raised will be divided equally between the SLA and junior accounts. Funds for the SLA will be used for keeping members up-to-date on Limousin news province wide, minimal admin fees and setting up for CWA annually. Junior funds will go towards the CJLA Impact Show 2019 in Saskatoon July 18-21, 2019; to sponsor the Junior Beef Extreme at CWA; and to recognize and give prizes to youth in the province who showcase the Limousin breed in the 4-H program.
Congratulations to all exhibitors and winners at this year’s National Show at Canadian Western Agribition. A very strong offering of genetics was at this year’s Solid Gold Limousin Sale. A special thank you is sent out to all bidders and buyers that helped make a successful sale possible. The SLA was excited to present the 2018 Commercial Cattleman Award to Ross and Audrey Lamont and Scott and Andrea Lamont of Meskanaw, Sask. They are strong advocates of the Limousin breed and have used Limousin genetics in their operation for many years. A reminder for all CJLA members to mark your calendars and make the trek to Saskatoon this coming July 18-21, 2019 for the CJLA Impact Show. We welcome and are very excited to have the future showmen of our breed from across Canada, overseas and our province! Watch for information, updates and deadlines on the CJLA website and SLA Facebook page. Have bulls, females or calves to sell? Upcoming sale date? Consider posting on the SLA Facebook page or the CLA website. Contact an SLA board member or the CLA head office for more information. As the holiday season begins and show season draws to a close, our wish to you all is a safe and prosperous 2019. Cheers!

Well 2018 will certainly be remembered as a very unique year with many challenges; too snowy and cold at calving, drought, forage and pasture shortages, prolonged harvest, mud and now cold. Hopefully everyone has been able to secure enough feed and forage supplies to get them through until green grass appears in 2019. We are seeing a bit of a depressed calf market as there are large volumes appearing at auction marts. There are going to be large culling and herd liquidations of the cowherd in Manitoba due to feed shortages. Hopefully you can maintain your herd so you can be around when the livestock markets strengthen. I want to thank everyone involved with the Ag-Ex show in Brandon. The show would not happen without exhibitors, sponsors and volunteers. A list of sponsors is listed in this report. The 2019 Annual General Meeting will be held in early January. If you have any ideas or suggestions for the Association please contact any of the board members. On some positive news I have been informed that True North Meats of Carman is in the process of finalizing details to send beef to Europe as part of the CETA agreement. This should help Manitoba producers as True North is the only federally inspected plant in Manitoba. We also know that Limousin is one of the most popular breeds in Europe. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a happy festive season. May you be able to spend time with family and loved ones. All the best in 2019.

The OLA celebrated another Provincial Show at the Markham Fair the first weekend in October. This event proves to be a great gathering point for Limousin breeders from both the Eastern and Western parts of the province. 98 animals were presented through the ring. Our junior program also held a really strong junior show at this event. Highlights and winners are featured in this issue of the Voice. Markham Fair board is already gearing up for next year’s show and want to celebrate the Limousin breed’s 50th anniversary by coming up with some special awards – stay tuned! We are just returning from another Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. The Limousin breeders came out strong again this year with 113 animals going through the ring. The exhibitor list shows several 1st and 2nd year exhibitors participating in our show. Great news for the growth and promotion of our breed. The Limousin contribution to the Royal Elite Sale was up significantly. Cattle sold well with national interest and bidding on the international scene landing a heifer to Australia. We also enjoyed our Limousin breeders from the UK taking in the show and visiting breeders afterwards. Our juniors rounded out the week with a strong show. Over 40 juniors took part in this well attended and watched event. The steers are arriving at Broniek Farms for our special steer trial to celebrate 50 years of Limousin in Canada. This promises to be an exciting event with several cattle groups wanting to host meetings at Broniek Family Farms during the feeding period next summer. This will be a great chance for these County Cattlemen’s and 4-H groups to see the advantages of Limousin influenced steers!

DATA PERFORMANCE TRANSMISSION
IMPORTANCE DES DONNÉES DE TROUPEAU
Thanks to all the technological and computer tools nowadays available, it is very simple to record and to analyze our herd performance data. However, those must be effectively submitted to our Canadian Limousin Association. We wish to congratulate and thank the breeders who are already submitting data on all their animals, and we are inviting all others to do the same, which is going to help making more progress with the Limousin breed. In the February edition of our breed magazine, the Canadian Limousin Association should be publishing the name of those breeders contributing data to the Elite Limousin Herds Program.
GENETIC EVALUATION CENTRE
Don’t forget to follow the periodic results available on the group of Limousin bulls tested at the St-Martin Test Station, in visiting the following web address : www.agrireseau.net/bovinsboucherie/ documents. This year, the bull sale is going to be held on Saturday, February 16th, 2019 at 11:30. As usual, a group of bulls with superior genetic and outstanding conformation will be offered at that bull sale. We hope to see you all there. On behalf of the bull consignors, we wish to thank you for your support and confidence. Congratulations to SDJ POLLED LIMOUSIN FARM, the 2018 recipient of the Best Limousin Bull award at the St-Martin Station. Another group of high-quality Limousin bulls will be offered for sale on Saturday, February 23rd, 2019 at 11:30, at the Danville Auction Mart. OUR WEBSITE, WWW.LIMOUSINQUEBEC.COM

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT How very lucky we are as seedstock producers to have talented professional photographers at nearly all of the major cattle shows! These professionals are there to provide a service. Just as your veterinarian, fitting crew, sales managers, and ad designers all provide a service - services that you would never question paying for. Why then, do some producers choose to forgo paying for their professional backdrop or ringside photos and instead copy the watermarked images off of the photographer’s website and share these images, typically via their social media accounts? It is truly unprofessional and, in a business, where image and reputation are of high importance, I would say, without a doubt, that you would be better off to not share any photos of your show cattle than to share watermarked images that you have clearly not paid for. You are stealing from the professionals who have taken those photos, and it reflects poorly on you, your operation, the breed(s) you represent and the industry as a whole. Next time you wish to share your show success via Facebook, please purchase your images from the photographer. Consider it an investment in not only the promotion of your operation, but also your reputation.

Robert 'Rob' Chisholm of Claresholm, Alta. on November 20, 2018 at the age of 64. Rob was a veterinarian, practicing in a large animal clinic in Strathmore for several years before purchasing the Three Walking Sticks Ranch, a cow/calf operation in the Porcupine Hills west of Claresholm. He loved the ranch and loved working with cattle. His herd included Limousin cattle. His greatest joy was sharing the ranching way of life with his kids. He worked, and played, alongside neighbours and local ranchers developing wonderful, lifelong friendships. His skill as a vet was valued and often called upon by his community. During the financially lean years of Alberta’s BSE outbreak he worked full time as a vet at the Claresholm Veterinary Clinic in addition to tending the ranch. Condolences from the Canadian Limousin Association.

CANADIAN CATTLEMEN'S ASSOCIATION
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
David Haywood-Farmer President, CCA
A number of positive developments in recent months will give Canada’s cattle producers plenty of reason to cheer. On December 30, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) will come into force among the first tranche of signatories to the Agreement. The Agreement was activated on October 30, when Australia deposited its notification to the CPTPP Secretariat in New Zealand becoming the sixth of the 11 signatory countries to ratify the Agreement, and triggered the 60 day period to come into force.
China too holds massive potential for Canada’s beef producers. In November, I participated in Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay’s trade mission to China, where he promoted Canadian agricultural products including beef and discussed ways of strengthening agricultural trade between the two countries. CCA participated in beef events in Shanghai and Beijing, and met with embassy and industry officials as part of our ongoing advocacy for expanded access in this highly complex market.
With Canada among the first six countries (along with Australia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Singapore) Canadian beef producers will benefit from successive tariff cuts starting in 2018, and a lower and more predictable tariff environment going forward. The CPTPP represents a significant growth opportunity for Canadian beef in key markets and important emerging ones.
The government’s focus on trade diversification will create extraordinary growth opportunity for the Canadian agriculture and food sectors. However, the ability to meet the potential of new access requires that a number of competitiveness issues be addressed. The CCA continues to advocate government to address workplace shortages, regulatory modernization and other key issues impeding competitiveness in the beef and red meat processing sectors.
Canadian beef exports to Japan are expected to double in 2019, up from the $160 million of beef exported there in 2017 under the old tariffs on fresh and frozen beef. On December 30, Japan’s tariff of 38.5 per cent will immediately drop to 27.5 per cent on Canadian fresh beef and to 26.9 per cent on frozen beef. On April 1, 2019, Japan will implement a second tariff cut, down to 26.6 per cent on both fresh and frozen and eventually lowered to nine per cent over several years. With CPTPP, Canadian beef will also be exempt from the Japanese safeguard tariff of 50 per cent on beef.
96
WRITTEN BY
The remaining five countries Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Peru and Vietnam are continuing their ratification processes and each will bring the Agreement into force 60 days after they submit their notifications. Vietnam in particular is an emerging market with important growth potential for Canadian beef. Canadian beef exports to Vietnam in 2017 were $3.9 million with a 20 per cent tariff. Once Vietnam implements CPTPP in 2019, their initial two tariff cuts will immediately bring the tariff down to 6.6 per cent and then to zero in 2020. The recent United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) has provided some certainty for the industry. It remains to be seen if the Democrats winning the House in November’s U.S. midterm elections may impact the final approval of the USMCA. The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) will be watching this situation closely in the months ahead.
The CCA also continues to advocate for the need to amend Bill C-68 to protect fish habitat without undermining farmers' ability to produce food in a sustainable manner. The CCA believes there is opportunity to work with the government to find solutions that will satisfy both perspectives. In another development, in January 2019, Canada’s beef yield grade standards will change from the current three classes to five yield grade standards to mirror U.S. yield grade standards. The process for this yield change is tied to the coming into force of the Safe Foods for Canadians Act on January 15, 2019. The Canadian Beef Grading Agency said the move to five yield grade standards will allow alignment and transparency with the U.S., and will also provide enhanced distinction between higher and lower yielding carcasses providing the opportunity for improved targeted finishing practices. With 2019 shaping up to be a year of change and potential for producers, I’m certain some time this holiday season will be devoted to how best to adapt to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that lie ahead. My wife Bonnie and I would like to wish readers a joyous holiday season and a healthy and happy new year.

HERD HEALTH
ASSESSING THE PROTECTIVE HEALTH OF PURCHASES
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
When purchasing or selling livestock we must ensure the health status, and preventive shots given, deworming and any other relevant information is expressed. This information can be obtained by a few simple questions. These questions are seldom asked in cattle transactions these days. With cattle being of higher value and often traversing over large distances and through different geographic areas it is valuable information for us to know.
98
When purchasing cattle, it is imperative to get the complete vaccination history for several reasons. First, you need to confirm the initial and booster shots were given for the diseases most prevalent in your specific area or was only one given so the booster shot becomes necessary. Are all of the diseases you need to have protection from administered or are there other things you need to carry out from a preventative medicine standpoint. Will these diseases have to be boostered? If something new shows up on the vaccinations you may want to include that protocol in the revaccination. A good example of this would be leptospirosis which is more common in eastern Canada but relatively rare out west. Make sure you recognize other hidden things on your purchases such as checking for internal parasites. Knowing the area that the cattle have come from may give you some idea of other things one has to protect for from a biosecurity standpoint. With any new purchases a standard quarantine is a good idea for at least a couple of weeks. Then if incubating, a respiratory disease for instance, it becomes evident and could be treated. This is not indicative or caused by the original location but rather the stress of transporting, exposure at auction facilities, weather changes, co-mingling and potentially exposure to what may be
on your farm. Common microorganisms on your farm allow the cattle to have natural exposure over time and immunity develops whereas cattle being brought in could be exposed to organisms your cattle are carrying but are not immune to. Other diseases may not show up for several years so ones like bovine leukosis (a bit more prominent in eastern Canada) and Johne’s can be tested for if a possibility of introduction into your herd. The absolute worst time to purchase and introduce animals to your herd is just before calving season yet this is when many purchases are made. The issue here is the bred animals may not develop protection in their colostrum for the scour organisms and other microorganisms present on your farm. If you do purchase commercial or purebred bred cattle make sure to find out if scours prevention was given so you have some idea of what protection the newborn calf is going to have in the mother’s colostrum. Just because the purchase comes from a high reputation herd does not guarantee the vaccination program is as comprehensive as you want or need on your premise. If you isolate the purchase, that gives you time to start a vaccination program, especially when it comes to scours prevention. The reverse could also be true whereby purchased animals can expose your herd to infectious agents and if it’s a new organism your herd is essentially naïve to then infection is a possibility. The measuring stick against good management is often how comprehensive an owner’s vaccination program is and if parasite (both internal and external) control is given in a strategic manner. It is too bad RFID tag information from the CCIA could not be passed down but some tracking programs like BIXS, Herdtrax and ViewTrak are getting

information shared between purchaser and seller. In the event of purchases from purebred sales a better job could be done describing what has been done to the cattle but if possible simply ask the question directly of the seller. If this communication network could be fine-tuned it would be great. This would allow purchasers to add in what was needed without redundancy of duplication. If unknown, definitely revaccinate to avoid any risks.
When purchasing, especially purebred cattle, we look at phenotype, genetics, EPDs, growth, etc. but health requirements are often overlooked. Ask the questions, as the health of your herd could be at stake. Enjoy the fall showing and sales season but on purchases made make sure they are vaccinated and have had any other health procedures done.

LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
I am sure redundancy happens a great deal in the cattle industry and is another cost we, as producers must bear. From over vaccinating, to over deworming, to giving too many metaphylactic drugs. All are possible if we don’t communicate the great things we do down the line when we market cattle. Preconditioned sales are one visible way this communication happens on a local level but we also need to toot our own horn and really express what preventative things are done to our cattle. From sales catalogues to satellite and internet auctions we must all accurately express all the great preventative and management procedures the cattle have had done to them. This will also minimize the necessity for antimicrobial usage and keep resistance at bay. Cattle producers are a responsible group we just need to clarify this in all of our cattle transactions.

2018 GENOMICS
WRITTEN BY
Dawn Trautman Director of Knowledge Translation Livestock Gentec, University of Alberta
ROUND-UP
This article brings a sort of ‘genomics round-up’—as the year draws to a close, it seems like a good time to reflect, bring new and old information together, and get it all sorted out in order to start fresh in the New Year!
and other relatives—it is the best estimate of an animal’s genetic worth as a parent. WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT GENOMICS?
SO, WAIT… WHAT IS GENOMICS AGAIN?
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
Genomics is simply the study of an organism’s DNA sequence, including the relationship between genetics and traits. While bovine DNA is more than 99% identical from animal to animal, small differences (sometimes called SNPs) make an animal unique. These variations in the DNA sequences can affect how animals perform, develop diseases, respond to their environment (e.g., pathogens), and react to management (e.g., vaccines, feeding regimes).
100
DNA is passed from parents to offspring, and can be linked to heritable production and carcass traits, such as birth weight, lean meat yield, and more. Tissue, blood, and hair roots all contain DNA, which is extracted and processed on a genotyping chip that reads thousands of variants in the bovine genome. EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences), are numbers that predict the genetic merit of future offspring or progeny of a particular bull, cow or heifer. With traditional EPDs many offspring are needed before the accuracy of prediction is high enough to make strong breeding decisions. With genomics the accuracy can be validated much earlier, and genetic progress made more quickly. So, gEPDs (genomically enhanced EPDs), which are interpreted in the exact same way as traditional EPDs, combine information of known pedigree, performance and genomic information about an animal, its progeny
Using genomics as another tool for making breeding decisions for your operation has many benefits—and most of them are important for your bottom line. I.
Parentage verification
Knowing the parents of an animal is essential to successful genetic gain. Genotyping can confirm the sire and dam of an animal. This can also be particularly important in pasture mating systems in order to determine which bulls are (and aren’t!) performing. II. Improvement in EPD accuracy
The accuracy value of a newborn animal is low, and as more information is collected overtime, the accuracy improves. Genomic selection allows you to make more accurate breeding decisions (based on more accurate EPDs) faster, often before the animal has offspring. III. Breed composition verification
Genotyping can identify the makeup of an animal’s breed. This can be used to ensure branding programs are accurate for producers and consumers, and allows breed associations to check the purity of their breeds. For commercial producers, crossbreeding is the optimal system for beef production in North America and globally and knowing breed composition of sires and dams assist in mating decisions that can optimize hybrid vigor and improve lifetime fertility, productivity and sustainability.
IV. Monitoring genetic diseases
Genomics can determine an animal’s carrier status for a number of diseases and major genes (e.g., Protoporphyria). It can also be used to monitor the frequency of other major genes, such as myostatin (related to double muscling). Knowing which genes might be present in your herd helps you make better management decisions as you can take corrective actions, if need be.
verification and is highly accurate. Bovine 50K genotyping is used on highly prolific animals (i.e., AI sires, ET dams, and prolific herd sires) that contribute a great deal of genetic material to the entire herd via their many offspring. In addition to basic genotyping additional options and depending on your breeding objectives, you may want to consider are testing for horned/polled, coat colour, or more.
V. Traceability
VI. Herd management
Genomics can be used to identify genes that make cattle gain more efficiently, or get sick less often. Producers can then manage their herd with more precision, customizing breeding / mate matching as well as management of feed, health, and more. HOW DO I START USING GENOMICS?
You start with adding genomic information to your traditional EPDs— phenotype is still king! Proper measurements of the traditional EPDs leads to increased accuracy, which contributes significantly to the accuracy of the prediction equations used to generate gEPDs for a breed. We still need all those good quality records you’ve been collecting for years. Then you decide on sending your DNA samples (tail switch hair roots, tissue, or blood) for low- or high-density SNP genotyping. The DNA information is incorporated directly into EPD calculations, at the same time as pedigree and performance data, via the BOLT evaluations for more accurate and timelier EPDs. In deciding between low- and high-density genotyping, there are three main options: I.
Basic SNP Parentage (95-120 SNPs)
The basic SNP Parentage assay is a good tool for parentage verification and has approximately the same accuracy as a microsatellite parentage test. II. Low Density SNP Genotyping (GGP-LD; 26,000 SNPs)
The GGP-LD assay is an excellent tool for SNP parentage verification and is highly accurate. The main advantage of the GGP-LD assay is that this information can be applied to the prediction equations to generate gEPDs at the lowest cost to the breeder. III. High Density SNP Genotyping (Bovine 50K; 50,000 SNPs)
The Bovine 50K assay is an excellent tool for conducting SNP parentage
USING GENOMICS TO KEEP THE COMPETITIVE EDGE
While a good eye for good body conformation will never go out of style, for traits of economic value there are genetic tools to ensure you’re making good decisions. In the cattle industry you need calves on the ground to make money. This is directly related to the effectiveness of your breeding stock in being prolific, with healthy genetics, and suited to your environment and breeding program. Genomics gives breeders the opportunity to make better breeding and selection decisions when an animal is young, saving you time and money. And genomic parentage can then check that this animal is indeed siring calves. Crossbreeding is lately becoming underutilized in the commercial beef industry in favour of increased uniformity for perceived risk reduction. However, as mentioned above, genomics is playing a greater role in determining breed composition in order to optimize hybrid vigour in the commercial industry. This is in large parts thanks to a Genome Alberta project at the University of Alberta, and led by Alberta Agriculture scientist, Dr John Basarab. Optimizing herd hybrid vigour in replacement females in linked to enhanced fitness traits of offspring and female fertility—both directly related to improved lifetime profitability of an animal. Managing future progeny breed composition is a relatively easy way to optimize hybrid vigour in your herd. And, in fact many Canadian Limousin producers are already wise to the benefit of crossbreeding, utilizing this “technology” in the development of the Lim-Flex® breeding program. THE BIG PICTURE
On your farm, genomics can help with herd improvement and economic gains by testing for and adopting breeding practices that improve herd fertility, health, and efficiency. Beyond your farm gate, genomics continues to offer benefits. For consumers, it offers reassurances in verifying the breed for marketing purposes, the traceability of their beef, as well as providing reassurances of best practices in the beef industry. As for the global consumer, it assures that in Canada, we are leading the way—consistently improving and breeding the best, in order to produce more with less. This is for the benefit of the environment, the health of animals, and to sustainably meet growing global protein demand in the coming decades. From Livestock Gentec, wishing you a peaceful and happy holiday season and a prosperous 2019!
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2018
Genotyping provides foolproof traceability through the entire beef value chain. For producers this might mean verifying lost or stolen livestock, and for consumers this might mean verifying sustainable production practices by tracing back to the farm origin all the way to the retailing of the end product.
