WORDS FROM THE
Welcome to Issue No. 14 of Top Stock. I can't believe that summer is over and it is time for fall show season. It was a great summer for showing cattle. First and foremost, this issue features the results from an extremely competitive run of summer junior shows. For me, as much as the cattle brought out have epitomized quality, I'm most amazed at the development of our youth in recent years. I believe they are set-up to be wellrounded and educated cattlemen and that is a credit to the show organizers for looking beyond conformation classes. I offer my thanks to all those volunteers for working tirelessly in the background to co-ordinate sometimes hectic schedules to the benefit of our youth. As the nights cool, we have brought you some good reading material in the fall issue of Top Stock. For the first time ever, we are excited to profile the judge of Olds Fall Classic on page 18. Craig Wilgenbusch of Halbrite, Saskatchewan will bring a fresh perspective to the show ring. From the other side of the country, we managed to catch up with Katie Elmhirst on page 26. She can normally be found on the Eastern Canadian show circuit but at the time of our interview, she was competing in the National Young Show Stars event in the UK. Finally, two young cattlemen talk about their experience with the Casper College judging camp, a partnership event with the Swift Current Young Ranchman's show that just passed in late August. Read their story on page 64, which is of particular interest to youth looking to brush up on their judging skills. As we gear up for the fall sales season, we would like to remind you that the deadline for booking your ad for the late fall issue is September 25. This issue will be published by Nov. 1, and we will be given out complimentary copies at Edmonton’s Farmfair, the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, and Canadian Western Agribition in Regina. As our most widely distributed issue of the year, this is a great way to promote your fall and winter purebred sales. This is, of course, our last issue for the year so if you have a December or early January sale, this is the issue for you! See you on the show road! – Katie Songer, Editor

BRINGING
WORDS BY JEFF GAYE
TO OLDS FALL CLASSIC
Catching up with Craig Wilgenbusch about their Charolais operation
C
raig Wilgenbusch will be judging at the Olds Fall Classic, October 5 – 7. While he describes himself as “young” in the judge role, his dedication to quality beef production means that for him, cattle showing is much more than just a contest.
Craig and his wife Tricia operate Wilgenbusch Charolais along with Craig’s mother Brenda (and their two-year-old daughter Harper). Their farm is near Halbrite, Saskatchewan, southeast of Weyburn.
T o p S t o c k M a g a z i n e / Fa l l 2 0 1 8
“We're huge on structure and functionality,” Craig said. “They’ve got to have a look to them. Being on the production side, that's our bread and butter here. At the end of the day they're all going to end up in the feedlot, so we're looking for cattle that'll still yield and produce a superior carcass.”
019
"You can't breed them all the same and expect the same result. That's why we use a diverse group of bulls. They each bring something to the table that we're searching for."
Craig’s father started with 15 cows in the early 1990s. They now have upwards of 450 head, running an annual bull sale in April and a biennial female sale every other December. “We have numbers but we're also producing quality,” Craig said. “Having the younger females outproducing our older females is definitely a goal down the road, maintaining that our young females are producing and working well.” And as seed stock producers, “our bulls have to work and they have to have some longevity in them. “Structure, and feet and leg is our biggest push, especially when we're selling bulls.”

Craig says their program stays on top of the newer Charolais genetics, and selects what will pair well with an intended dam. “Some people wonder why we use so many different sires. It’s because each cow is different,” he said. Since they are constantly striving to improve their cow herd, they have to keep the maternal side in mind when selecting bulls.

“You can't breed them all the same and expect the same result. That's why we use a diverse group of bulls, they each bring something to the table that we're searching for,” Craig said The operation can boast its share of major accomplishments. Tricia says the success of their first female sale three years ago was the culmination of a long effort. “Our first female sale in 2015 was definitely a long-term goal that we had from the last 15 years,” she said. “We were able to get it together and to continue to grow with that sale, and that’s ranked really high on our accomplishments list.” They have had the second highest-selling bull in Canada, JWX Downtown 7C, and the national champion female in 2014, JWX Abby 706A. Beyond their breeding success, the family takes pride in welcoming the Charolais community to visit their operation. “I think the highlight for Wilgenbusch Charolais is welcoming international breeders from around the world to tour our farm,” Tricia said. “We've hosted quite a variety of different events over the years, including a Norwegian and Swedish tour at last year’s Agribition.” They also hosted members of the World Charolais Congress in 2015. Their approach to breeding is reflected in Craig’s judging preferences. Each breed of animal offers its own strengths in different traits, and producers should be able to depend on the genetics to deliver the desired qualities, he said.
Bottom Left Craig hosts some of the 42 delegates from Norway who visited his farm after Agribition in 2017. ©© Charolais Banner
“Definitely you have to appreciate each breed for what they bring the table, or else we'd only have one breed, right? So I don't think you can be a one-sided judge. You have to judge each breed according to its own merits.”

Shows matter, Craig said, because they’re an important marketing tool for breeders and they allow comparisons of genetics and breeding programs. The Wilgenbusches usually show at Brandon and at Agribition every year. This year they plan to be at Farm Fair as well. Shows are also important for getting young people involved. “I think it's huge for our youth in the industry. It cultivates so many kids into showing cattle and being involved in cattle in the future. I think it is instrumental

people. As he puts it, it’s a people business first; the cattle come second.
“The homework and effort that these kids put in at home nowadays is tremendous and really puts some good roots in them.”
That idea comes through in his advice for exhibitors. “Be proud of what you’re doing and the product you’re raising,” Craig said. “And never stop promoting your breed or your cattle.”
It’s a lesson he learned from his father. “Customer service and the work ethic, and never stop working to produce a better product. And don’t settle for average.” In fact, he says, the beef industry has no greater strength than the quality of its
As Tricia says, “be a spokesperson for your breed. You’re representing your breed, and your farm, and your family.”

Passion, persistence, patience Katie Elmhirst’s formula for success

op Stock reached Katie Elmhirst in England last month.
As one of the top exhibitors at the 2017 National Junior Beef Heifer Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Katie was invited to write an essay and compete for a trip to the UK. Katie’s essay won her the opportunity to compete at the National Young Show Stars show in Malvern, Worcestershire.
Team Canada placed third in the beef section of the show. The event also includes dairy and dual-purpose cattle, and sheep. Katie has won her share of honours as a junior showperson. “I’ve been showing since I could walk,” she said. She has shown in fairs local to her family’s farm in Indian River, Ontario, and she often

travels to the US to compete in shows like the Keystone International and the New York State Fair. But her favourite is “definitely the Royal,” she says. “Everybody looks forward to it. It’s a big deal – the biggest show in eastern Canada. And for competition, it has the biggest numbers. “And it’s in the big city.”

"I’ve been showing since I could walk." Both of her biggest achievements in the show ring came at the Royal. In 2013, at the age of 11, she won Reserve Champion Showperson with a calf named Aphrodite. In 2016 she was Champion Junior Showperson with her heifer Cherry Bomb. Katie’s family, which includes parents Billy and Juanita and brother Owen, operates Indian River Cattle Company, and also helps her grandparents Grant and Mary Elmhirst at Elmlodge Polled Herefords. Each operation runs about 70 head of polled Herefords, Simmental and Angus.

It’s not surprising that her family has been Katie’s strongest influence. Her parents have reinforced what she calls the three Ps of success: passion, persistence, and patience. After all, even in the junior show ring, there is no such thing as an overnight success.
Above Elmhirst puts her skills to work in the National Young Show Stars Competition.
“It takes a long time,” Katie said. “I was awful at the beginning, my parents just threw their hands up.”

But her experience isn’t limited to show animals, which she says gives her an advantage in the ring. “I work on 10 to 20 head every day,

so I’m comfortable with cattle,” she said. “A lot of kids only work with four or five cattle a year.” For all the work she puts in, what has showing given her? “Well, I’m in the UK right now,” she said. She also credits her show career for teaching her leadership skills (“I’m bossy in the barn,” she says), teamwork, patience, and public speaking ability. Katie is currently in Grade 11, and is looking to study agriculture business, marketing, or large animal chiropractic at a US college after graduating from high school.

Western Canadian youth evaluate judging camp
J
udging is a skill that all livestock producers, exhibitors and customers must have. Four bright Young Ranchman’s exhibitors got the opportunity to travel to Casper, WY to harness this skill and further their judging resume. “It changes your perspective of the cattle people are showing based on your own personal opinion” says Georgia Pawlitza, four-time Casper camp attendee. Pawlitza was the Intermediate Judging Champion at the Young Ranchman’s show in 2017. Although this was her first year winning the Casper trip through Young Ranchmans, she had been attending the Casper College judging camp for three years prior. “It’s a very hands-on clinic”, Pawlitza mentioned. “The coaches there are exceptional.”
She said she appreciated the college advisors the most, “Just the fact that they take time to walk you through everything and you get to experience everything hands on.” The camp is run by current judging team members and coaches of the Casper team. “Our freshman and sophomore teams will all come back and serve as group leaders, advisors and instructors for the camp. Their expertise is also included in there and I think it is a great opportunity for those kids to associate and help teach the younger kids what their experience was because they are obviously freshly graduated from it.” Jeremy Burkett commented. He added that, “It provides a unique teaching opportunity for [team members] too.”

Burkett is the head livestock judging coach at Casper and helps coordinate the trip for the Young Ranchmans judging champions. His background is in swine and sheep, something the Canadian judges were able to learn about. Pawlitza appreciated the opportunity to learn more about these two species, as they are not commonly judged in Canadian competitions. She mentioned she had never judged a hog or lamb until attending her first Casper camp at age 10. The camp is three days long with the first two days focusing on the introduction to breeds, terminology and anatomy. On the final day, campers display their skills in a judging competition. Between 100 and 115 campers, ranging

from beginners to competing freshmen, attend Casper’s judging camp. Burkett has been involved with the camp for nine years and has seen many judges go through the program and continue on to find success in all levels of judging. Burkett is a Casper alumnus himself as he was a member of the judging team for two years. He then attended Colorado State University, where he judged on the Reserve National Championship Team. Derwent native, Riley Pashulka also qualified for the camp this year after earning 2017 Senior Champion Judge at Young Ranchmans. This was Pashulka’s first year attending the Young Ranchman’s show. He commended the show for the exceptional organization and atmosphere.
T o p S t o c k M a g a z i n e / Fa l l 2 0 1 8
Pashulka was awarded a trip to the 2018 National Western Stock Show and competed in the 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) judging competition in Denver, CO. Having had success with judging prior to the trip, Pashulka focused on terminology and the organization of his reasons. The 17-year-old said, “there’s definitely lots to learn,” referring to improving his judging skills. Although he has two years left of high school, he is considering judging collegiately. Pawlitza, on the other hand, already has her sights set on Casper College. Until then, she plans on continuing to attend their judging camp. The 2019 camp will be held June 24-26 and Pawlitza highly encourages everyone eligible to attend.
“It has had such an impact on the way I view the industry and cattle, sheep and hogs.” Young Ranchman exhibitors partake in individual judging, with the top judges advancing to team judging where the champions are selected. Pashulka and Pawlitza were champions in their respective divisions at the 2017 show. Cade Wright and Jordan Dorrance also attended the judging camp as the pee wee and junior trip qualifiers from the Young Ranchmans show. Cade placed seventh overall in the junior division at the Casper Camp. Both Pashulka and Pawlitza admire the family atmosphere the Young Ranchmans show provides juniors. Pawlitza compared this to the environment of the camp. “They’re kind of just like a big family down there.” Through the Casper camp, Pawlitza
has met and remains in contact with fellow Hereford breeders and juniors across the United States. The connections Pawlitza has made are not exclusive to Americans. She talked about how the trip has brought her closer to her fellow Canadian exhibitors as well. “I didn’t know some of those kids very well, but now I talk to some of them daily,” she added. The northern judges are not the only ones with feelings like this towards the camp. Coaches like Burkett also develop relationships through the camp experience. “We have multiple kids that have been repeat campers year in and year out. Seeing them grow and develop and seeing them coming in as young people and growing up into young adults is probably one of the more rewarding parts of the camp.” Burkett continued to say that seeing campers go on to find success at local judging competitions

and seeing results, as they become more competitive are also joys of the camp. Pawlitza has had tremendous local success and credits the Casper camp for making her the judge she is today. She mentioned that since attending the Casper judging camp she has become a twotime regional 4-H champion judge and a Summer Synergy champion in judging as well. She advises future campers to “do your best to take it all in.” Burkett says the best way to prepare for a judging camp like Casper is to “come with an open mind and willingness to learn.” When asked about his impression of the Canadian judges he replied with, “I think that program has been very beneficial to developing and helping youth promote their education.” He went on

to say that the opportunities Casper offers for agricultural enthusiasts is abundant. “Casper is very hands on and a lot of our degree programs from Agriculture Communications, Agriculture Education, Animal Science (and) Ranch Management are very productive degrees.” Pawlitza and Pashulka expressed similar responses when describing the importance of judging. “I think it is a huge part of the industry”, Pawlitza mentioned. “We are wanting to raise structurally correct, easy-doing females and bulls that we can raise big bull calves and big heifer calves off of.” She summarized the importance of the skill as, “It is really important to get out there and judge and be able to know what you’re looking at, so, in the future, if you want to go and build a herd for yourself or build up a name for yourself in the cattle

industry, you can apply what you have learned and do what’s right for your company.” Both judges enjoy giving oral reasons because of the opportunity it provides to express their individual opinions. Pashulka described his passion for reasons as, “It gives you a chance to voice your opinion and how you like and don’t like things.” Pashulka’s values stayed the same throughout the camp; however, his reasons improved as a result of the Casper camp. After thanking the Young Ranchmans show committee and Casper College for the opportunities they provided these four juniors, Pashulka described his experience in one word, “unreal”. Although having advanced judging skills is an asset in the livestock industry, the experience of the Casper camp provided more than just a “how-to”. It gave these junior exhibitors a chance to connect with breeders and exhibitors across the continent, making memories while pursuing their passoion. Through opportunities like the Casper College judging camp, the Young Ranchmans Show continues to encourage a desire and a passion for livestock judging.
