AD SIZES & SPECS Ads requiring a bleed should be built to trim size and have images or graphics extended 0.125in beyond each edge. All text and critical elements should be at least 0.5” inside trim edge. We accept ads in PDF or JPG format built to 300 dpi resolution or greater. We do not accept ads built in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher or Adobe Pagemaker. For full specifications, see our online media kit at www.limousinvoice.net
NO CELL PHONE PHOTOS
Cell phone photos will not be accepted, as their poor optical quality, bad light sensitivity, and wide angle lenses generate blurry, noisy or distorted photos that do not accurately represent your cattle. Cell phone cameras do not capture a suffience number of pixels (enough image data) to use that photo in print.

PRESIDENTS REPORT
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019

W
elcome to winter! Firstly, what a way to end our 50 year celebration with a strong set of Limousin cattle out on the show road! Our champions this fall reflect the power and perfection of the Limousin breed. Congratulations to all that exhibited! I believe it is important to congratulate Greenwood Limousin – Scott, Jackie, Jay, Leah and Jaxon on their Western Triple Crown Supreme wins – Lloydminster, Farmfair and Agribition with Greenwood Electric Impact. He was certainly the talk of the barns. I would like to take the time and recognize the entire Ontario Limousin Association for hosting a great event with our National Show and Sale, celebrating our 50th Anniversary. I enjoyed meeting so many lovely people and our banquet was fantastic; I definitely will forever remember Nathan Allen, with his musical stylings promoting the Limousin breed. Our Canadian Association was represented by people and cattle from across our country and we should be very proud. Now we look forward to another decade and to the promise of the next 50 years of Limousin cattle. With calving around the corner, it’s important to utilize the tools available with our Digital Beef program and to take advantage of DNA services. Using these tools, leads to more knowledge about our herds, and ultimately can aid both purebred and commercial producers when selecting future sires and replacement females. We are working to create a cohesive relationship with Neogen to benefit our membership. I wish everyone all the best with the start of calving and bull sale preparation. And as always, please reach out to myself with any commentary. Merry Christmas and here’s to 2020!

CLA OFFICE UPDATE
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
Photo taken at E M Tedford by the Limousin Voice
50 years of the Canadian Limousin Association – we celebrated, we told stories and now we look forward to the next 50 years. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the 50th Anniversary Committee for their hard work over the last year on this memorable event. Limousin breeders past and present from across Canada took in the banquet, sale and show. It was exciting to see both the impressive cattle numbers and the quality of the cattle at the National Show. Great job everyone on such a positive event for the Limousin breed! The support that the membership showed the CJLA in their dutch auction of the heifer is a strong indication of the direction our breed is heading. Our juniors are the future and the membership strongly supports that. WHOLE HERD ENROLLMENT 2020
Reminder that Whole Herd Enrollment is due on January 15, 2020. For members that do registry work by paper you were mailed your WHE package in the fall. Online Digital Beef users please log into your account and complete your WHE under the Herd Management, Inventory tab. It can be easy to forget from year to year how to do our enrollment. We are happy to help walk you through this – please call or email the office. Also, instructions can be found on the CLA website. January is one of the busiest months in the registry, please do not leave this to the last day to complete. Again this year, if you have not completed your enrollments/ disposals by the assessment date all assessment age females will be billed for the 2020 year. If you are not currently on WHE but wish to enroll for
the current year please let us know and we will help you get started. REGISTRY WORK
As the year comes to a close please remember to register or record your 2019 calf crop. If you have paid to enroll a female on WHE that means registration of her calendar year calf is included in that price. When entering birth weights we now ask that you also note how the weight was taken. The choices are by scale, hoof tape or by estimation – be sure to fill this out. Once your calving data has been entered be sure to also enter weaning data. UNREGISTERED CATTLE IN DIGITAL BEEF
Unregistered animals have identification numbers that start with URF for females and URM for bulls. They are now clearly labelled in red in Digital Beef and state "this animal is unregistered". If you have questions regarding this please contact the CLA office. BULL SALE REMINDERS
Bull sale season is just around the corner, and as always, the CLA is here to assist you with tools to help you have a successful sale. • Please remember that EPDs are now updating on a weekly basis and the most current EPDs can be found on an animal’s profile in Digital Beef. It would be wise to inform your buyers of this in your bull sale catalogue, etc. Breed averages are available in the Percentile Ranks document on Digital Beef – contact the CLA office if you need assistance in locating this. • Catalogue downloads may be requested from the CLA to obtain pedigree and EPD information on
DERNIÈRES NOUVELLES DU BUREAU sale cattle in an Excel document. We require an Excel file with only the registration numbers, not the tattoos, of cattle in the sale. There is a $1.50/head charge for this service.
50 années d’existence de l’Association des Éleveurs Limousin – on a célébré le tout, on a présenté notre histoire et nous nous tournons maintenant vers les 50 prochaines années.
• A mailing address list can be obtained from the CLA for $100, additionally the CLA can send an e-blast about your sale for $100 (you must provide all content/graphics).
• CCIA offers a gift certificate for Limousin branded CCIA tags that can be given to your Limousin bull buyers to purchase a bag of tags at your expense as a thank you for purchasing a bull. • The CLA has a Limousin CCIA tag advertisement that can be used in your bull sale catalogue or otherwise to explain and promote the tag program to your commercial buyers. We have also developed a “Tag Supporter” logo that can easily be added to your sale catalogue or website. Contact info@limousin.com to receive a digital copy of either. • Please remember that only Limousin cattle that contain between 37.5% and 75% Limousin blood and 25% to 62.5% Black Angus or Red Angus blood, may be called Lim-Flex. Cattle that fall outside of these parameters should be described as Percentage Limousin in sales catalogues, not Lim-Flex. • Last but not least, please remember to complete DNA testing for animals that require it well in advance of your sale. Depending on the test requested, DNA turnaround time is typically between 21 days. On behalf of the CLA Board and the CLA staff Merry Christmas everyone and thank you for a fantastic 50th year of the Association!

REGISTRY WORK

August (left) and November (below)
Our bulls have succeeded on test over and over again. A select group of bulls have always been developed and marketed through a test station with the remaining bulls marketed private treaty. But we know that genetics + development = quality bulls and we feel it is time to have full control of the development of them. We know our bulls best, we know what they are capable of and we can develop them to their full potential. No creep feed and hand fed after weaning. Our 2019 bulls will be marketed completely by PRIVATE TREATY. Expect all of the same great information that you have received in the past as we are running an on-ranch test for the bulls. The info will all be available on our website.

We've passed the test, so it is now time to turn to the next chapter.

LEGACY BREEDER
LIMOUSIN ROOTS RUN DEEP
Original Canadian Limousin Association members hold true to the breed that has kept them in business for generations.

T
he Tedford family has been raising Limousin cattle since the breed was first imported into Canada. Ernest Tedford first saw the Limousin breed while visiting the Brandon Research Station in 1969. The muscle definition and composition that the bulls displayed at the station left an everlasting impression on him. In 1970, Ernest, his wife Wilma and their three sons Lyall, Harvey and Darryl established Circle T Limousin near Estevan, Sask. The original farm homestead was established in 1906 and is now a centennial third and fourth generation program. The breeding program later became known as E M Tedford and Sons. Ernest and Wilma attended the founding convention of the Canadian Limousin Association in Calgary. In March of 1970 Ernest joined the Canadian Limousin Association where Circle T Limousin was issued the 79th membership of the Association. They are the earliest CLA membership that remains actively registering cattle.

LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
Limousin calves were born at Circle T Limousin in 1971. A total of 52 calves were born that year from various well-known sires including Decor, Dandy and Danseur. These first calves piqued the interest of Ernest leading him to apply for a permit to import fullblood cattle. In 1972, with permit in hand, Ernest set out to France and selected his first Limousin heifer. He chose a Domino daughter out of Bambi by the name of Halo. The following year, armed with more permits, Ernest returned to France and imported three more females.
“In the early years, one of the most exciting moments was the acceptance of the Limousin breed at the fall calf sales,” recalls Ernest’s son Darryl, “This was one of the highlights that helped sell our progeny as well as the driving force behind the expansion of the breed itself. The new grading system that emphasized a lean carcass and muscle helped sell feeder calves into other provinces such as Ontario and Quebec.” Furthermore, the interest and value for this type of carcass was supported at Canadian Western Agribition with the 25 years of the carcass competition.
A demand at the market meant that commercial cattlemen were looking for Limousin bulls to use over their herds.

“We would have commercial cattlemen request Limousin bulls for use in the PFRA pasture program, which resulted in excellent commercial calves,” Harvey comments, “In the early years we showed cattle in every major show across Canada and all the small shows in southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan. We exhibited at Canadian Western Agribition for 20 years. We were trying to promote the breed and our herd.”

The Tedford’s first marketed their breeding stock with a female production sale beginning in 1982. In 1987, they took part in the first Cowman’s Kind Bull Sale in High River, Alta. and continued with bull and female sales in Moose Jaw, Sask. for 19 consecutive years until 2006 when they made the decision to sell their bulls through private treaty and have enjoyed success in doing so since. The reach of their genetics has not been limited to western Canada. Approximately 40% of their sales are outside of Saskatchewan. Breeding stock and genetics from their herd have been sold to producers in nine provinces within Canada, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Washington, Australia, England, Brazil and Columbia.
The interest Ernest showed in the breed allowed him to help organize the Saskatchewan Limousin Association in 1972. He later became the first president of the Saskatchewan Limousin Association in 1973. His interest in the breed led him to visit other breeders within the Manitoba Limousin Association, so much so that in 1975 the Manitoba Limousin Association created an honorary membership category just for him. In 1988, Ernest attended the Limousin World Congress in Australia and again in 1992 when it was held in Fort Worth, Texas. Ernest’s active role in the Limousin breed led him to receive a number of accolades. He was awarded Limousin Leader of the Year in 1978 for his outstanding service and dedication to the Limousin breed in Canada. He was the first to receive the Saskatchewan Limousin Association Distinguished Breeder award in 1990, the EBEX award for business excellence in the export category in 1994, and was the 12th recipient of the Farmer of the Year award
Over the years, the Tedford family has witnessed firsthand how far the Limousin breed has progressed. “The Limousin breed has matured into a more functional animal when compared to 50 years ago,” Lyall says, “The cattle are far more complete and balanced in their
makeup. Today, we have cattle with depth of body, thicker topped, heavier boned, improved docility and scrotal performance that emphasizes more than just single trait selection.” “Limousin cattle have made leaps and bounds in all of these areas, now we as breeders need to fine tune these traits without compromising any other gains. This is one of the many challenges breeders face going forward. We have cattle that excel in all of the EPD performance traits necessary to be competitive in today’s industry,” says Harvey, who served as Canadian Limousin Association Assistant Secretary-Manager in 1974 and 1975 and Secretary-Manager from 1976 to 1993.

from the Estevan Chamber of Commerce in 1996. The Canadian Limousin Association honoured him with a Canadian Limousin Association Award of Distinction in 1997 and he received the Scroll of Honor Award from the Saskatchewan Livestock Association for his contribution to the community and the livestock industry in 1999. At 90 years of age, Ernest passed away in May of 2008. Lyall, Harvey and Darryl, along with their families, have continued actively registering Limousin cattle under the memberships of E M Tedford and Sons and Circle T Limousin. Today, they have registered over 4,273 head of Limousin cattle.
21
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
22 In order to accomplish these goals, they have taken advantage of technology and utilize both carcass ultrasound and genomics to aid in decision making and the improvement of carcass traits. They know that genomics do not work without the hard data – carcass ultrasound measurements, weights, scrotal measurements, docility scores and the like must be judiciously submitted to the Association. Their goal is to expand the genetic capacity of their herd. They currently maintain a herd of 150 breeding age females, with an emphasis on selecting females based on a wide approach that focuses on the best overall females, while ensuring that they maintain volume and capacity and do not have traits fall by the wayside in order to achieve gains elsewhere. They seek to bring homozygous polled bulls that are above average in all 13 traits into their herd for breeding purposes. This approach has provided a strong cowherd that is the base for a strong set of bulls to be offered privately each spring.
The Tedford family looks forward to being a part of the future of the Limousin breed through the challenges and expectations that the beef industry holds. “The evolution of the breed must still follow the principles of sound selection, but the goals keep changing. As breeders we can’t address just one trait, we have to put the ‘pedal to the metal’ on all traits to be able to excel the breed within the cattle industry,” Harvey cautions, “As soon as we focus on one particular trait all other aspects will begin to lack. A well-rounded approach is to tackle all traits to be able to excel the producers into the future. If we continue to focus on these traits, we will be more widely accepted in the industry.” The future of the herd is in good hands under the careful management of experienced operators Lyall, Harvey and Darryl, and the exuberance of the next generation. Darryl’s daughter, Katelynn Tedford, was actively involved with the Canadian Junior Limousin Association and has now completed a degree in Animal Science from the University of Saskatchewan and is continuing her education in Agronomy. She has a keen interest in the use of genomics for continued improvement of the herd. She continues to educate
23 The Tedford family maintains that the purebred business is a people business and they have appreciated the fellowship and support their friends in the Limousin industry have shown towards their program. Over the years they have made many friends throughout North America. Pioneers of the breed have been mentors to the Tedford family and influenced the direction in which their herd developed. Their herd is one of the few left in the industry today that was built from the original imports into Canada and through careful management, prudent decision making and adoption of technology, this founding Limousin herd has stood the test of time.
" THE EVOLUTION OF THE BREED MUST STILL FOLLOW THE PRINCIPLES OF SOUND SELECTION, BUT THE GOALS KEEP CHANGING. AS BREEDERS WE CAN’T ADDRESS JUST ONE TRAIT..."

50 STEERS FOR 50 YEARS COMPETITION
This event was hosted by Broniek Family Farms. The Broniek's bent over backwards to look after the steers in the most professional of ways. The two young fellows running the feed bucket and straw chopper are an asset to our industry. Ethan and Mario are in their early teens and finished this pen of steers like seasoned professionals. The Broniek’s brought great exposure to our breed by hosting several 4-H and County Beef Producer meetings and of course the Ontario Limousin Field Day on their farm where the steers could be showcased. Thank you to Matthew Heleniak and Adam Hill (Greenfield Energy) for creating and evaluating the carcass categories and to Norpac Beef for purchasing the carcasses. Thank you to the competition sponsors: Greenfield Energy, Norpac Beef, Jones Feed Mills and the Ontario Limousin Association.

Reserve Canadian National Champion Bull at Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and $32,000 top selling lot of the Royal Elite Sale Sold to Beach Family Farms, Bristow, Oklahoma
Fifty years ago, Limousin cattle were introduced to North America. Wulfs Fifty T804F is an exceptional showcase of progressive genetics and evidence of the adaptation of Limousin cattle over the years to fit today’s beef industry. Fifty’s eye catching, athletic phenotype made him the lead bull in the 2019 Wulf Cattle NWSS Grand Champion Limousin Pen. A great choice to improve foot quality and scrotal size, this extra stout, calving ease prospect is ultra complete. He exhibits the great phenotype often transmitted by his sire, LFLC Bank Account 701B, in a performance package which tallied a 811 lb. 205-day weight, coupled with growth EPDs in the top 2% of the breed. His 2-yearold dam is an own daughter of the globally renowned maternal sire, Wulfs Amazing Bull T341A. The chance of a lifetime to own a piece of a breed changer with unlimited genetic and mating potential. Fifty has already been collected to procure semen for in-herd use and after his exhibition at the RAWF, he will enter Custom Genetic Solutions for semen collection for worldwide distribution.

A JUNIOR'S POINT OF VIEW
The length and muscle that the Limousin breed possesses are just a couple of the favourable characteristics that drew the Dyck family to the Limousin breed. “Limousin bulls bring muscle and length of body to the commercial industry, which is something that many breeds do not have,” Wyatt says, “The length and muscle of the Limousin breed are two things we have seen prove themselves time and time again to be very beneficial to our commercial herd and to the herds of our bull buyers.” Moreover, when it comes to profits, the Limousin breed is unmatched in Wyatt and Leighton’s eyes. “When it comes to adding pounds to cattle, the Limousin breed is one of the most efficient breeds of cattle to feed,” says Leighton, “It is another huge factor why commercial cattlemen love Limousin bulls and why so many commercial guys are switching from smaller breeds to powerful breeds that add pounds to their calves because in the commercial industry pounds equals money.”

The added pounds coupled with the typical calving ease of Limousin bulls makes them an easy choice for improving your bottom line, without compromising calving ease and calf vigour.
at our commercial herd and instantly tell that a calf has Limousin influence within its background. Whether it’s adding muscle traits or simply adding growth, we believe that the Limousin breed can benefit anyone’s herd in some shape or form,” Wyatt and Leighton go on to say, “We are not saying that the Limousin breed is the best in all characteristics and areas of cattle, but we are saying that the Limousin breed is the most balanced and efficient breed of cattle in Canada.”
“From our own perspective it gives us an appreciation and passion for the Limousin breed when we can look

rom a young age, Wyatt and Leighton Dyck have been immersed in the Limousin breed. The Dyck family first began raising purebred Limousin cattle in 1984 with the purchase of one bred heifer. Over the years the family has gradually expanded their purebred herd, Short Grass Limousin, on their land base near Swift Current, Sask. They now breed 180 cows with half of those being registered Limousin.

the Canadian cattle industry, Limousin can increase efficiency and profitability. For consumers, the carcass yield and tenderness of the lean Limousin beef is unprecedented and there is opportunity to highlight that in grocery stores and restaurants. The Short Grass Limousin herd maintains a focus on what the commercial cattlemen and the industry demands. The showring has never been the primary goal of their breeding program, however, Wyatt and Leighton’s involvement in 4-H lead them to realize the fun and value around promoting their Limousin genetics through exhibiting their cattle. Both Wyatt and Leighton have won Grand Champion Steer at their 4-H Club Achievement Day three times each, respectively. One of Leighton’s proudest moments was winning Second Year Futurity Cow/Calf Pair at Swift Current Frontier Days with SGL Dreamer UDX 35D and her first calf. In 2018, Wyatt was pleased to bring a home raised Limousin sired steer to the Calgary Stampede Steer Classic. The steer had previously won Grand Champion at his 4-H achievement day. “I may not have placed high but just seeing that I can take a steer that my family has raised from our Limousin genetics and be able to go to one of the most prestigious steer shows and be competitive was a very proud moment,” Wyatt recalls. Their successes have not been limited to the show ring either, with Wyatt qualifying three times to
compete at the National Judging Competition at Canadian Western Agribition. Once the demands of post-secondary education are behind them, the Dyck brothers intend to focus more on exhibiting their Limousin seedstock. Wyatt is presently attending the University of Saskatchewan to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. Leighton graduated from high school in 2019 and is currently attending Great Plains College in Swift Current for first year classes before moving to Saskatoon to also pursue a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science at the University of Saskatchewan. Both members of the Canadian Junior Limousin Association, Wyatt and Leighton felt privileged to attend the 2019 Canadian Junior Limousin Association Impact Show in Saskatoon. “It’s not every year we get the show so close to home so we decided to make the most of it last year at Saskatoon,” says Wyatt, “We enjoyed every part of the show and couldn’t have asked for a better environment. From the parents, to the CLA Board, to the participants attending the show – they were all very friendly and happy to help out in any way they could.” “I personally felt at home at the show,” Leighton remarks, “It was like I was hanging out with all my friends. There were a lot of grooming techniques that we saw that we thought could benefit us in the
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019

38 show ring as well. We may not have won any classes while we were at the show, but when you are in such a great environment you kind of don’t care whether you win or lose, you’re just out there having fun. That’s what we feel showing is really about. As long as you are having fun it doesn’t really matter what place you get. We both have been taught and learned on our own, through 4-H judging competitions, that it doesn’t matter what place you finish because it’s only one person’s opinion. At the end of the day the only opinion that matters is the opinion of the person who is buying your cattle.” The brothers also remarked that, “The oral marking and judging competitions were a very nice touch to get all ages comfortable with speaking about their animals and learning how to market at the same time.” Both Wyatt and Leighton plan to continue their involvement in the CJLA and share their opinion when needed. They are in the breed for the long haul and have no plans of altering course. Their intention is to ramp up showing and promoting their family’s Limousin genetics and broadening their involvement in the Limousin community after university.
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
Wyatt and Leighton did not get to where they are today alone. They credit the mentorship of many people within the cattle industry with making the industry feel like home to them. Their first 4-H beef leader, Grant Scheirlinck of G and J Livestock, taught them the basics of grooming, clipping and showing. “Grant always kept it fun for us but at the same time always pushed us to go further and learn more so that we could reach our full potential,” Wyatt comments, “When we were younger, Grant basically forced us into 4-H judging competitions. Now looking back, we learned so much from those competitions and did rather well in them too.” However, it is their parents, Trevor and Lorna, who have been their greatest mentors in the cattle industry and the Limousin breed.
“Our parents have taught us lots about the Limousin breed and why we raise Limousin cattle instead of any other breed. The amount of knowledge our parents have given us about ranching and cattle in general has helped us beyond words when working or competing within the cattle industry.” Wyatt and Leighton are now seen as mentors themselves to youth. They know that raising cattle is a lot of hard work and responsibility and their words of advice for younger cattle enthusiasts is to enjoy the good moments, learn from the bad moments, never stop learning and never give up before you reach your goal. “When I was 12 years old,” Leighton recalls, “I remember telling myself I was going to quit 4-H and quit ranching. I wanted to go work in the city when I was older and never have to do chores again. But I stuck it out and now I look back on that memory and laugh because I am still ranching and I wouldn’t trade it for any job in the city.”

MASTERFEEDS The Masterfeeds Show Cattle of the Year Awards recognize the top show bull, top show female, top show sire and top show dam for that year as determined by a point system based on placings at qualifying shows. In order to qualify for points a show must have a minimum of 30 head of Limousin cattle. In addition, Limousin animals who win a Supreme Champion title at a show with a minimum of 30 head of cattle of any breed receive additional points.
2019 QUALIFYING LIMOUSIN SHOWS Central Ontario
The Canadian Limousin Association and our members sincerely thank Masterfeeds for their support of this program! Congratulations and thank you to all Limousin breeders who invested the time and resources into showing their cattle this year. You represented the breed very well at shows across the country, and your efforts shine a very positive light on the Limousin breed, for which everyone benefits.

PUREBRED LIVESTOCK MARKETING WEBSITE
A website is essential in today’s marketplace. It should act as the online storefront for your operation and all advertising efforts should direct interested customers to your website for further information. While the amount of information you can tastefully include in a print ad or e-mail blast is limited, those advertising mediums should act as the draw to point potential customers to your website for full details. A purebred breeder’s website may include a page about the operation and family behind it and a contact page with phone

stablishing an online presence should be first on your list once the basic branding of your operation (logo, signature colours, slogan, etc.) has been established. While you need not dive headfirst into all of the digital marketing avenues available, most of today’s buyers – certainly all youth and young adults – are getting a large percentage of their information from online sources. Luckily for livestock breeders, once your online presence is established, it is a reasonably small line item in your marketing budget that can achieve big results.
68 BEFORE YOU BEGIN USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO MARKET YOUR OPERATION CONSIDER WHAT YOUR BUSINESS OBJECTIVES ARE, AND WHO YOU ARE TRYING TO REACH. numbers and an e-mail address – provided it is checked and responded to. Some contact pages have a fillable contact form that will be sent as an e-mail to the website owner. Additional pages may include cattle for sale, sires, dams, show success, etc. Your website should be updated frequently – ideally at least once a month. Not only do customers favour websites with fresh content, but so do search engines. Keep your site up to date if you want your operation’s website to appear near the top of the list of results for a web search of your breed of cattle. At the very least, make sure to update your site well in advance of an upcoming sale and soon after the conclusion – no one wants to see an invitation to your sale that happened two years ago as the most recent post on your website. For the computer savvy there are do-it-yourself online website building platforms that will also host your web domain for a minimal annual fee. Many producers prefer to spend their valuable time working in the day to day management of their operation and leave website building to a professional. There are many options available that range from having a professional design the site and then hand the reins over to you for updates to having the site designed and fully maintained by a graphic designer.
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media is now a commonplace piece of most operation’s marketing strategies, and for good reason. There is no cost to use it, you can reach a huge worldwide audience, it is instantaneous and easy to update frequently and you can have direct interactions with your customers. Moreover, agriculture based social media accounts, when used appropriately, can be hugely impactful at promoting positive public perceptions of agriculture and engaging in factual information sharing with urban consumers.
Before you begin using social media to market your operation consider what your business objectives are, who you are trying to reach and what you want your audience to do. This may aid you in deciding which social media platform(s) are right for you. When you first delve into the world of social media for your operation, start small. You do not need to utilize every type of platform. It is much better to do a good job of posting useful, engaging content regularly on one platform than to scatter your efforts ineffectively across multiple platforms. Regardless of the platforms you utilize, always present your content in a professional manner with proper spelling and grammar. Make a commitment to respond to messages and comments in a timely manner. In order to get the most out of your posts consider the timing of your posts – too early or late in the day and potential viewers may be asleep and your content will get buried in their newsfeed.
Facebook Creating a Facebook page for your operation is the most common starting point for operations once a website has been established. As with print marketing, your online advertising efforts should also direct your customers to your website. The best Facebook pages are not all advertising all the time, though. Your followers want to see the day to day happenings on your operation – pictures are especially well received. They want to read funny stories and gain insight from a good article you have shared. Think of the analogy of a bank account – frequently ‘deposit’ content that adds value to your customers, speaks to their values and emotions, but does not push them to buy product so that when you need to make a ‘withdrawal’ post advertising an animal or upcoming sale, your customers will have already developed a positive relationship with your brand. Focus on feelings and evoking emotion – when we care, we share. In addition to reaching individuals
who ‘like’ and ‘follow’ your Facebook page, craft your content in a way that is likely to be shared by your followers, thus exponentially increasing your page’s reach. When it comes down to it people want to feel like insiders and make themselves look good by sharing your content. In addition to your operation’s Facebook page, you can also create an event on Facebook – especially good for open houses, field days and sales – and invite people to the event over Facebook. Facebook advertising can also be a very worthwhile investment. For minimal dollar amounts of your choosing, you can specifically target your advertisement to individuals from specific regions, of certain age and gender demographics, and you can even go so far as to target individuals who list “Limousin cattle” as an interest. Ads can be set to run for specific periods of time targeting your selected audience. If you have ever seen a post in your newsfeed that says ‘Sponsored’ in small print – you are on the receiving end of that operation or business’ targeted Facebook advertising campaign. It is a highly cost-effective way of reaching your target market, especially if you have a sale to promote or animals selling by private treaty. and news and back and forth public conversation, largely between people who do not know each other. The # symbol is called a hashtag. You can use this to categorize your Tweet with others using the same hashtag and hashtags can be searched. For example, you could hashtag your Tweet #bullsale and someone could search #bullsale and see your Tweet along with others that used the same hashtag. There is a 280 character limit so Tweets are meant to be concise. If you enjoy using social media, a Twitter account may bolster your brand recognition, particularly to a unique and often international audience. However, for most operations a well-run Facebook page will be a sufficient social media presence.
Instagram is intended for photo sharing. You post a photo, add a caption and relevant hashtags if you wish and your followers can like and/or comment on the photo. Videos are also popular, especially when posted to ‘Your Story’. In a world where we are continually documenting life with our cell phones, it’s no wonder that Instagram has 1 billion users each month, with only Facebook and YouTube having

69
70 more. The vast majority of Instagram users fall in the under 35 category so if your operation wants to target a younger generation of potential clients, it may be worthwhile to tap into this platform.
YouTube For livestock producers, YouTube is best used to effectively upload and organize individual sale animal videos and embed links to those YouTube videos into your website or share links on your other social media pages such as Facebook.
Blogs Blogs are intended for daily updating and sharing

of relevant information, thoughts, photos and videos. There are free sites that allow you to create and maintain your own blog from a computer or cell phone. Blogs do not eliminate the need for a website, but they can be more informal in nature and drive traffic to your website.
NEWSLETTERS & E-MAIL
Newsletters and e-blast can go hand in hand but they do have a different place in your marketing scheme. Newsletters are periodical (perhaps monthly or quarterly) in nature and typically contain photos, updates, and information about recent or upcoming events on your ranch, show or sale results, and informative articles (obtain permission before republishing). Newsletters may contain advertising as well, but that is not their sole goal. Instead, utilize a newsletter to engage with your clientele in a meaningful way that will make them feel more connected to your operation. It is a good idea to have a newsletter sign up button on your website. E-mail blasts are a convenient and cost-effective means of reaching target customers. E-mail blasts are typically sent when pertinent information pertaining to a sale,
71
If you work with a professional to design your website, ask them about setting up a personalized e-mail address for your operation. While not absolutely imperative, it does give you a polished and professional look (and remind people of your website address) to be sending e-mails from yourname@yourranchname.com. At the very least, don’t use the e-mail you have had since high school (cowboy1990@ emailprovider.com doesn’t have professional tone) and instead set up an account that is yourranchname@emailprovider.com. If you are tech-savvy, maintaining your ranch’s website, social media accounts and writing newsletters or e-blasts can be a rewarding endeavour and a way for you to bring additional value to your operation. However, if your skill-set it more suited to managing your herd than hashtags, do not despair. There are professionals with vast experience in the livestock industry that can help you. Professional services can vary from
an all-inclusive approach, whereby you hire out all of your online management, to the more common approach of having a professional design your website and set up a professional e-mail address, with you taking charge of your social media presence and updates. Often times the younger generations involved with the operation can find their place of expertise in these areas and take on an active role in
maintaining your operation’s online presence. With a website launched, and online presence established, you can forge ahead into the next priority of getting your operation and livestock in front of your target audiences – print materials. Assembling the correct assortment of these essentials can make all the difference. Watch for Part 3 of our Six-Part Series in the next issue.

particularly the catalogue, is available and then again the day before or morning of the sale. Utilize a mixture of a graphic (such as your advertisement that was placed in a print publication or create a new one) and plain text and always include a call to action with clickable links such as “Click to view catalogue” or “Visit our website for more information”. Work to continually build your own e-mail mailing list by maintaining a list of e-mail addresses for past buyers, bidders and those who have inquired about your livestock. You might also consider having a guest book at your ranch for visitors to jot down their contact information in or exchange business cards that you can refer back to. It is distasteful, however, to just go skimming through publications or online and spamming people without them either having signed up for your newsletter/e-blast or had a personal interaction with your ranch. Additionally, most breed associations also offer an e-blast service to their members which is an excellent resource to utilize and typically quite affordable.

NEWS BRITISH COLUMBIA 1
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
Season’s Greetings to our fellow Limousin enthusiasts. By now you’ve undoubtably felt the hype from the 50th Anniversary celebrations across the country. From provincial field days to National celebrations, Limousin has been in the forefront of conversation in Canada this year. As Limousin breeders we should be excited about how far we have come and where we are headed.
72
Limousin happenings in BC have been relatively quiet this fall. However, one BC Limousin breeder did make the trek over to Toronto for the 50th Anniversary National Limousin Show at the Royal Winter Fair. They didn’t send their cattle over in a truck, but rather in a liquid nitrogen tank. In the fall of 2017, Pinnacle View Limousin of Quesnel, BC, sent embryos east to be implanted in Ontario recipient cows. With the help of the Scott family of Spare Time Livestock, the resulting babies would become their 2019 RAWF show string, along with some eastern genetics they purchased in the 2018 Colours of Autumn Sale. This forethought paid off in a big way as Pinnacle View came home with not one, but two Heifer Calf Champion banners! It was a very worthwhile endeavor that wouldn’t have been possible without the invaluable relationships they have developed with those key families in Ontario. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the pacific and all the best in the upcoming calving season!

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 As we come to one of the happiest times of the year, I bring Christmas greetings to all on behalf of the Alberta Limousin Association. Personally, I pray we all reflect joyfully and with conviction on the birth of Jesus and what He has accomplished on our behalf. Alberta Limousin Association members have had a busy fall. I am proud to report that we had many members attending the 50th Anniversary events held at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Alberta Limousin cattle were very well represented despite the distance from home, and I thank those producers who endeavoured to showcase their genetics in Toronto for their commitments. Special acknowledgement to Pinnacle View Limousin, who brought home division honours in the Intermediate and Senior Heifer Calf divisions; to Venture Livestock for their purchase of the Reserve National Champion Female in the Royal Elite All Breed Sale; to the breeders of the Senior Champion Bull, DC Farms; and to the breeders of the National Champion Female, Boss Lake Genetics – congratulations to all! Thank you to the Ontario Limousin Association for their skillful organization of such a special event. The annual Limousin Bonanza Gold show was held closer to home in Edmonton in conjunction with Farmfair International. Cattle were sorted under the keen eye of Dr. Aaron Grant of Olds, Alta. Champion and Reserve Champion Bull were both awarded to Greenwood Limousin & Angus, with Greenwood Electric Impact 707E ET and Greenwood God’s Country 706G ET claiming Champion and Reserve respectively. Grand Champion Female was won by Boss Lake Ms Molly 814F, exhibited by Boss Lake Genetics, and reserve was awarded to Greenwood Fundamental 702E ET, exhibited by Greenwood Limousin & Angus. Congratulations to all division champions, and thank you to Greenwood Limousin & Angus, Boss Lake Genetics, Payne Livestock, Richmond Ranch, and Excel Ranches for their efforts to bring a solid set of Limousin cattle to the show. The ALA would like to extend a special thanks to Jackie Payne of Greenwood Limousin and Angus for liaising with Farmfair and serving as Bonanza organizer; Wayne Burgess of Venture Livestock for serving as Ringman, Tyler Stewart of 777 Cattle for acting as Marshal, and Rob Smith for announcing the show. We hope to see you all attend (and exhibit!) at the 2020 edition of Bonanza next year. Thank you to our Bonanza sponsors this year. Your support is appreciated: Hi-Hog Farm and Ranch Equipment, Excel Ranches, Plains Limousin, Pinnacle View Limousin, Venture Livestock, Richmond Ranch, Gregory, Harriman & Associates Accounting, Lone Star Tack & Feed, DC Farms, Nor-Alta Limousin, and 777 Cattle.

Please keep these operations and businesses in mind when seeking new services, equipment, and Limousin genetics! I am ecstatic to announce that the Payne family of Greenwood Limousin & Angus have pulled a hat trick! For the third year in a row, they have emerged triumphant in the Alberta Supreme Show at Farmfair International. The Bonanza Show Champion and Lloydminster Stockade Roundup Champion, Greenwood Electric Impact 707E ET, was crowned champion over all breeds on Saturday, November 9, 2019. This win follows a supreme bull championship in the same arena in 2017, and a supreme female championship in 2018! Please join me in recognizing Scott, Jackie, and sons Jayden and Jaxon for their commitment to the Limousin breed and their unprecedented achievements this fall. Congratulations! The ALA was happy to host Stephane and Sandrine Bourdarias of EARL Bourdarias, Eyburie, Limousin, France, owners of the Miss World Champion Limousin Female, Ferrari, and Derick Le Roux and Anischa Lambrechts of Xourel Limousins, Coligny, North West Province, South Africa, owners of the World Champion Limousin Bull, Xourel Rainmaker. The champions were recognised by Limousin Champion of the World organiser PJ Budler during the Bonanza show. Both families were looking forward to visiting farming operations throughout Alberta before making their way home. In addition to the Royal and Farmfair, several members took cattle to the Lloydminster Stockade Roundup. The ALA congratulates Greenwood Limousin & Angus for their success with Greenwood Electric Impact 707E ET, who was named Champion Limousin bull as well as Supreme Champion Bull over all breeds. Congratulations also to the Champion Female, Boss Lake Ms Molly 814F, exhibited by Boss Lake Genetics. The ALA is happy to announce that plans are under way for our 2020 Field Day – and we are heading south! Jaap and Carla de Jager have graciously committed to hosting us at their new home near Carmangay, Alberta on June 20, 2020. Please mark your calendars and plan to be with us to participate in the AGM, view cattle, and have dinner. Tours of nearby feedlots are being considered, and we are open to suggestions – please contact a board member. The board of the ALA would like to remind members to keep thinking of ways to improve the Association – please feel free to contact any board member with ideas for new events, programs, or draws to improve our reach into the commercial beef industry in Alberta. We produce an excellent product – let’s get it to industry! May the peace of Christmas, the warmth of family, and the blessings of God be with all this Christmas.

LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
The entire year of 2019 is one for the record books. Once again it seems the weather had too many extremes of wind, lack of moisture, too much moisture, not hot enough, not cool enough; putting up feed was a challenge and finishing harvest was even more difficult to accomplish.
74
But this year wasn’t all doom and gloom! Calf prices were steady, cull cow prices have come up and leveled off, and bred cow sales have been strong. It is a great time to be involved and a part of the beef industry, where facts and scientific proof for sustainable beef production are shared with the consumer to ensure that the correct information gets out there! We as producers in both the purebred and commercial sectors of beef production and agriculture need to take more pride and a stance in promoting ourselves as being the strong advocates in climate and environmental practices; for if we are not stewards of the environment around us, then we cannot continue living the wonderful lifestyle that we love. Be sure to take the time to share your knowledge of our way of life, so that the average Canadian can see just how passionate we all are to be a part of the agriculture and beef industries! The fall show season was successful for the Limousin breed. A special thank you goes out to the Ontario Limousin Association for hosting a second to none celebration for the 50th Anniversary of Canadian Limousin in Toronto at the beginning of November. Canadian Western Agribition was a tremendous success as well. Thank you goes out to the CWA, to all exhibitors and guests that came out on show day, all of the sponsors, board members, Rebecca Martens for looking after the SLA
booth and our Barn Boss Eric Martens. For cattle placings in divisions at CWA please go onto the CLA Facebook page. Congratulations to Double B Cattle Co. for winning the Grand Champion Female with DBCC Fool’s Gold 2F, and to Greenwood Limousin & Angus for Grand Champion Bull Greenwood Electric Impact ET as well as winning the RBC Supreme Bull over all breeds. The SLA had a successful Pick of the Barn fundraiser following the Limousin show. Thank you to all that bought a ticket, and to all that donated items leading up to the draw. The big ticket winner was TaDomi Hunt of Carlsruhe, Ont. He chose Lot 7, the entry from Anchor B Limousin. Mr. Hunt chose the payout of $7,500, with Anchor B receiving $2,500 and keeping their animal. Congratulations to Les and Colin Tuchscherer of Causeway Farms on being named the Saskatchewan Limousin Association’s Commercial Breeder of the Year. The family farms 5,000 acres of crop land and calve 75 Limousin/Charolais cross cows near Tramping Lake, 50 km southeast of Unity, Sask. They have been using Limousin bulls since 1993 and have found that the calving ease and calf vigour coupled with their muscle shape and gain have allowed them to command a premium at market. As 2019 draws to a close, I wish to say thank you to all for taking the time to read the Saskatchewan News. I am passing the torch to a new secretary and this will be my final submission. Safe travels and happy calving everyone! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Greetings from the MLA. It's been a challenging summer and fall throughout Manitoba. A dry start this spring gave crops a poor start, left pastures stressed, and winter feed supplies short. A complete weather turn around in September saw excess moisture (rain and snowfall) that delayed harvest to the point that thousands of acres of crop will have to be left for spring harvesting. This sounds like a similar story across Western Canada. Hopefully everyone can source enough feed requirements to get their herds through the winter as there is adequate moisture to get pastures going in spring. I was able to attend the 50th anniversary show, sale and festivities in Toronto. Congratulations to the Ontario Limousin Association on hosting a successful event. The Limo Lounge was a great area in the barn for guests and exhibitors to relax and socialize. The Limo Lounge was sponsored by the Stanton Family and Hockley Valley Brewing. Many thanks to Barb MacTavish (Stonetown Promotions) for having 50th apparel there for sale and twisting up hundreds of caesars each day. Thanks to Jim and Chrissy Wiley for sourcing the Beatty Family Vodka for the "lounge". Thanks to Brent Black for organizing this great hospitality area.

The 50th Anniversary Banquet kicked the weekend off on Friday evening. It was a great social event with a large gathering of breeders from coast to coast. Our emcee for the evening was our very own Nathan Allen. Nathan kept us entertained with his "Limo" influenced music compositions, humour and timely agenda. Nathan was the quarterback for most of the details regarding how the banquet all came together. During the cocktail hour there was a wonderful slideshow created by Laura Ecklund highlighting our 50 year history. Thank you to all breeders for submitting pictures and stories and to Laura for creating. Having Limousin cattle must really keep us young – nobody in those pictures has aged a bit!
The CLA and OLA took this banquet as an opportunity to recognize certain individuals for their contributions to our breed and our industry. Awards were also presented to the "50 Steers for 50 Years" category winners. This turned out to be a great way to showcase our breed in the feedlot/carcass sectors of the industry. Broniek Family Farms was the host for the feeding period. The OLA and CLA can't thank you enough for the attention to detail and willingness to open your farm up to 4-H, County Cattle Producer meetings and of course the OLA Field Day. And then the auction… I am continually amazed at the generosity of our Limousin family and its circle of supporters. To the item donators, bidders, and purchasers… THANK YOU! A big thank you to our auctioneer Kevin MacArthur and ring crew of Connor Rogers, Kyle Payne, Connor Wiley and Wayne Burgess. As we continue with 50th Anniversary events for the remainder of the calendar year, we would like to thank all founders, developers, promoters and supporters of our great breed. We must continue to look forward and carve out our place in this great industry while at the same time remembering how we got here! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire OLA board of directors along with our Secretary, Nancy Lawrence for reaching out and making this all possible.

Maritime Limousin breeders were well represented at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in November to help celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Limousin cattle in Canada. Four breeders exhibited 16 head: High Tide Limousin (Ian Kittilsen, our newest Limousin breeder), Top of the Hill Farms (Siddall family), East Coast Limousin (William Cooper) and Balamore Farm Ltd. (Cooper family). Other Limousin breeders who attended the show were Jay Hiltz of Hiltz Livestock, Victor Horsnell of Hillfoot Farms and Jesse Thorne from New Brunswick. Maritimers were very happy to be part of the 50th celebration, taking part in the wonderful banquet and auction, the National Sale, and
enjoying the friendly atmosphere of the show and the hospitality of the hosts, the Ontario Limousin Association. The Ontario Junior Limousin Association invited the Maritime Juniors to join them in their Junior Show at the Royal and Ian Kittilsen won second place in the Junior Showmanship division. In celebration of the 50th, all Juniors who participated came home with a beautiful new green windbreaker jacket. There was a lot of discussion about the Canadian Junior Show in Ontario next summer, and plans are being made for Maritime Juniors to make the trip!

Champion of the World competition. Greenwood Electric Impact ET bred by Greenwood of Lloydminster, Sask. and now owned by Ben Armitage of Kinsella, Alta. won the titles of Limousin - Champion of North America and Limousin - Champion of the World.
4 DBCC Fool's Gold 2F bred and owned by Double B Cattle Co. of Unity, Sask.
won the titles of Limousin - Miss North America and Limousin - Miss World. The 2019 Limousin judges were Hector Bonomi from Uruguay, Hayden Greene from Australia, Darragh McManus from Ireland and Christy Collins from the United States of America.
The Champion of the World competition compares show champions across countries based on a photograph of the animal. Each country has a designated show (Canadian Western Agribition is the designated show for Canada) and the Grand Champion bull and female within each breed at the designated shows are automatically entered into the Champion of the World competition. Champions are then compared against their continent/region counterparts to generate four champions (North America, South America, Europe, and Asia/Africa). The four continent winners then compete against each other for Champion of the World Bull and Female within their breed. 32 winners (16 female, 16 bull) are then pitted against each other for All Breeds World Supreme, which at the time of publication, was yet to be determined.
Thank you to everyone who has supported ou r program this year.

CHINA BEEF DISPOSITION
Source: CanFax Research
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
It was recently announced that China has reopened its border to Canadian beef and pork. Canadian export certificates were halted on June 25, 2019 due to the discovery of fraudulent export certificates being found in China. Canadian beef exports to China must be ractopamine free, frozen, boneless, and from animals under 30 months of age. Beef exports are subject to a 12% Chinese import tariff; the same as before the export ban. Canada and China continue to work together on increasing access for fresh chilled beef as well as bone in beef.
82
Chinese beef imports had been growing rapidly over the past several years, and with the African Swine Fever outbreak, China has become a red hot meat export market. While China consumes almost half of the pork in the world, it is also the largest beef importer in the world. For example, according to the USDA Foreign Ag Services, Chinese beef imports in 2015 were 663,000 tonnes, and in 2019 are projected to be up to 2.4 million tonnes, with a further 20% increase in 2020 to 2.9 million tonnes. Canadian beef markets benefit through increasing exports to China and through higher global beef prices as beef from around the world flows into China. Canada was exporting beef to China until the end of June, and at that time Canadian beef exports to China were up 300% in volume and 272% in value compared to the first six months of 2018. The value of Chinese exports accounted for 6.1% of total Canadian exports in the first half of this year. China was Canada’s third largest export destination. Given the size of the Chinese market, Canadian packers should be willing to step back into that market and that appears
to be the case as premiums for Ractopamine free cattle are being reported. In addition to the opportunities in China, Canadian beef trade has been performing well this year. At the end of September, total beef exports were up 12% in volume and 21% in value compared to last year, and volume was up 17% from 2017. This was the seventh consecutive year of larger beef exports. Exports continue to show promise, as Canada continues to sell more beef and at higher prices onto the global market, which is certainly a great scenario. Exports to the US were up 8% in volume and 16% in value compared to last year, and accounted for 72% of all exports. Canada’s second largest export market is Japan,

with exports up 59% in volume and 67% in value. Exports to Japan have accounted for 11% of total beef exports this year. The Trans Pacific Partnership which came into affect this year has been positive for Canadian exports as we have had a tariff rate advantage over the US. This is expected to change as the US and Japan have come to an agreement that will give US beef the same tariff rate once their agreement is ratified. Since beef exports to China stopped, Mexico is Canada’s third largest market with exports up 7% in volume and 19% in value. South Korea is a smaller export destination for Canadian beef, accounting for just over one percent of our exports, but it has seen tremendous growth with the value of exports increasing 68% this year. While beef exports have seen double digit gains, imports have seen almost double digit declines, with imports down almost 14% in volume and down 9.3% in value. The three major countries that Canada sources beef imports from are the US, Australia, and New Zealand, with the year to date volume of imports from these suppliers down 15%, 29%, and 21% respectively. Uruguay is the next largest supplier, and imports from them are down 5%. All of these countries except for the United States have seen tremendous export growth to China, which has reduced the flow of beef to North America.

CANADIAN CATTLEMEN'S ASSOCIATION
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
The past few months have been a time of tremendous growth for the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA). In the wake of issues such as Canada’s Food Guide, label claims, and alternative proteins, CCA leadership deemed it necessary that a new Food Policy committee be formed to drive industry’s approach to these growing concerns. To lead this initiative, Policy Manager Jennifer Babcock was hired in the Ottawa office in June. Babcock brings a wealth of experience in government relations and policy and we are confident that this file is in good hands. The committee will advocate to the Government of Canada on behalf of cattle producers to ensure food related policies are science-based and not misleading.
84
This past May, CCA shared its perspective on the labelling and marketing of meat, plant-based proteins, and lab-grown proteins at Health Canada’s 2019 Food and Nutrition Stakeholder Engagement Session and the Beef and Pork Value Chain Roundtables Joint Session in Ottawa. The CCA’s view is that for a product to be labelled or marketed as meat it must meet the legal definition of “meat” or “meat byproduct” as defined in the Food and Drug Regulation. Subsequently, the Quebec Beef Producers submitted a complaint to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) about the labelling of an alternative plantbased protein product marketing itself as meat. The CCA is working with its U.S. counterpart, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and international bodies like the International Meat Secretariat, International Beef Alliance, and Codex Alimentarius Commission, on the need for a consistent approach to, and predictable rules for, the labelling of meat products. Another active government relations initiative for CCA has been Bill C-68, the Fisheries Act. The amended Act received Royal Assent on June 21, 2019, and contained several Senate amendments, including the repeal of the ‘Deeming Habitat' provision, or subsection 2(2). CCA is pleased with these final amendments and has been asked to provide regulatory development input by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans on a Routine Works Regulation. This will essentially define routine agricultural structures and activities for exemption, as well as related codes of practice and standards; a process that will take at least several months.
WRITTEN BY
David Haywood-Farmer President, CCA
Regarding pending livestock transportation regulations, the CCA has drafted a letter sent to the Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister seeking a two-year delay on enforcement until the ongoing research project is completed. Several meetings have been held with the Minister on this issue. The Government of Canada recognizes there are challenges with the legislation as currently drafted and have expressed a willingness to investigate possible options to deal with the concerns. The leadership of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has also engaged and is also committed to find a workable solution. On the animal health side, CCA is part of a CFIA-led BSE Negligible Risk Application Industry/Government Working Group tasked with preparing Canada’s OIE application for Negligible Risk Status. The application must be submitted by May 2020 for acceptance in July 2020. The OIE will then proceed with an in-depth review of Canada’s submission and will provide a final decision in March 2021. This is important because moving Canada to a Negligible Risk status is a critical first step in adjusting requirements for specified risk material to better align with that of the U.S. Achieving Negligible Risk status will also assist in enhancing competitiveness for eastern Canada fed cattle marketing. Heading into fall, we will be watching daily for movement on the Canada U.S. Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). The agreement, which replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement, was signed by the three leaders at the end of November 2018, beginning the ratification steps required to implement. In June 2019, Mexico became the first of the three nations to ratify leaving ratification to Canada and the U.S. On May 29, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tabled Bill C-100 “An Act to implement the Agreement between Canada, the United States of America, and the United Mexican States,” which is the enabling legislation to implement CUSMA. Second reading took place on June 20 and the bill was referred to the Standing Committee on International Trade. As fall run begins, we will also be monitoring the Canadian and American markets through the team at Canfax. CCA will also be in pre and post-election mode in the coming months. An election policy document (available on the CCA website) has been
Finally, I would like to wish all of our Canadian producers from coast to coast a safe and prosperous 2019 harvest. In our role to represent Canadian beef farmers and ranchers from coast to coast, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) looks forward to working with not only the new Federal government, but all parties, to advance the profitability and sustainability goals of our industry. Contributing $17 billion to Canada’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), generating 228,000 jobs, and protecting vast amounts of Canada’s endangered grassland ecosystem, the Canadian beef industry is a formidable player in the Canadian political landscape. However, with less than 1% of the population involved in primary agriculture, it is essential that we as beef producers work together to ensure the voice of the industry is heard. Chief among the priorities for Canadian beef producers is trade, both within North America and around the world. The Canadian beef industry is a world leader in the sustainable production of high-quality beef and 50% of Canadian beef is exported into over 58 countries around the world. Maintaining favourable tariffs and reducing regulatory burden is essential to ensuring Canadian beef production remains viable, and that our customers around the globe are able to enjoy our product. One of our most vital trade relationships is with our neighbours to the south, the United States. Throughout the ongoing Canada U.S. Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) negotiations, CCA’s focus has been on regulatory cooperation and maintaining the guard against the resurgence of mandatory country of origin labelling (mCOOL). In Europe, a complex process to meet European Union requirements has resulted in limited growth in that market to date. CCA is requesting financial support for a Red Meat Industry Development Fund which would be focused on addressing current trade limiting factors. The fund would enable enhanced capabilities to segregate eligible product, support EU requirements for food safety interventions and help to address costs and other types of resources needed to implement onfarm production protocols for the EU market. The CCA was extremely pleased with the resumption of trade with China in late November. Following discovery of fraudulent pork export
certificates on June 25, 2019, Canadian exports of meat were halted. Since June, CCA has been actively engaged in discussions with government officials to help ensure Canadian beef exports to China would be eligible as soon as possible. The Government of Canada completed an investigation and submitted an Action Plan that supported the reestablishment of exports to China; all establishments eligible to export as of June 25, 2019 are once again eligible. CCA wants to thank all those involved in restoring this important trade relationship. Shipments of Canadian beef to China represented 2.6 per cent of Canada’s total beef exports in 2018. In the first half of 2019 exports to China were up 271% in value at 11,315 tonnes valued at $96 million and were on pace to reach 6.1% of total exports. The CCA was recently in China for meetings to further build the Canada-China trade relationship. Back in Canada, CCA representatives met with Beef Farmers of Ontario and the Ontario Cattle Feeders Association in November to discuss challenges in Eastern Canada. Chief among these is the shortage in packing capacity, which has resulted in significant economic impact on both the dairy and beef industries. The extent of the situation is estimated at $174 million economic benefit if cattle prices were normalized to the five-year fall average price for fed cattle and cows in Ontario and Quebec from the 2018 eastern fall price lows. The problem is being further exacerbated by the hopefully temporary closure of one of the plants in Ontario. This value of course does not fully capture the extent of the hardship caused by shortage of slaughter capacity in the East. This lack of processing capabilities also increases other costs, for example, if cattle are being kept on feed longer than anticipated and often results in price discounts on these cattle. Furthermore, the processing shortages have ramifications extending beyond Ontario and Quebec, and into the Maritimes. The economic impact of these ongoing shortages is significant and warrants careful consideration and timely action. Throughout the remainder of 2019, CCA staff and directors will be meeting with global and domestic stakeholders and policy makers. I am extremely pleased with the work being done on our behalf by the dedicated and talented staff. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish my fellow producers from coast to coast a safe and happy holiday season. May 2020 be a year of continued prosperity and opportunity for Canada’s beef industry.

HERD HEALTH
BULL MAINTENANCE WRITTEN BY
Dr. Roy Lewis DVM
The herd bull is often the most neglected part of many cattle operations. Great emphasis is put on them just before and during the breeding season, but the rest of the year bulls are often not thought about. We must be ever mindful of not neglecting the huge genetic potential bulls have on our herds. Protect your investment and help maximize fertility to maximize that genetic potential. I will outline health and management procedures on a yearly calendar assuming breeding season is in the spring.
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
The easiest way is thinking of your herd bulls every time you process the cows and deciding then whether anything must be done to them. People often shy away from handling bulls as they are larger and can raise havoc with even sturdy corrals. There is also the issue that every time bulls are moved the fighting resumes and the pecking order must be re-established. This can be minimized with good facilities and having a large pen or pasture to return the bulls to. Exercise at all times of the year keeps the bulls fitter and the feet and legs in much better shape.
86
Vaccinating of the bulls should correspond to what you do to your cows. All respiratory and reproductive vaccines as well as multivalent clostridials (blackleg) are good to give to bulls. Bulls could be the source or spread of disease especially the reproductive ones like vibrio, leptospirosis, or trichomoniasis if they are a problem in your area. They are quite rare but worth watching out for. The additional vaccination our clinic recommends for bulls is the one for foot rot. A lame bull at breeding season is not desirable. This vaccine only protects for one cause of lameness in bulls, but the foot rot organism can gain entry through cracks in the bull’s feet. It is a small investment considering
the bull is half the breeding equation. This vaccine and others we administer at semen evaluation time as the bulls are caught then and it is an ideal time to vaccinate. Deworming and delicing should be done in the fall with a pour on either endectocide or a specific insecticide for lice plus a drench dewormer such as safeguard. Keep in mind the dewormers such as safeguard can be fed as well making it easier and safer than giving the oral drench. One must always have safety in mind especially when working around the head of bulls even if restrained in the chute. Internal parasites are becoming more of an issue and can build up especially in run down breeding bulls. Use the right dosage for the weight of the bull – don’t skimp. The bulls are always the sentinel animals when it comes to lice. Hair loss may indicate lice but often lots of scurf will lead to scratching especially on hot days. Semen evaluations are most often performed in the spring before breeding. Producers want them done before bull sales in case decisions have to be made as to new purchases. If insurance was taken out on a bull it is a very wise move to test before the policy expires in case something has happened over the winter. If a bull has been sick, had swellings develop in the sheath or testicles or had cows returning to heat then a check of his fertility should be made at that time so a replacement can be found if needed. Older bulls (5 years or greater) have an increasing likelihood of becoming infertile because of things like testicular degeneration. Do as much as possible at semen evaluation time such as ear tagging, if necessary, taking a hair sample in case genetic testing is necessary or checking the eyes for scarring. Get all lumps and bumps and scuttle lameness’ checked out as well. There is never a more ideal time and tagging is made much easier by doing it at the same time as electroejaculation.

Fly control is imperative for bulls over the summer. If not treated, you will notice hundreds of horn flies feeding on the backs of your bulls. Flies have more of a predilection for the bulls so in order to reduce irritation, blood loss and gadding, treat them within the proper interval for the product used. Several pour on products with names like Saber, Boss or Cylence are effective for 30-60 days. Otherwise fly tags or back rubbers may be used. Again, safety when tagging bulls must be considered. Nutritionally, again treat the bulls like your cows with trace minerals. Maintain a condition score of 2.5 – 3.5. A rising plain of nutrition prior to the breeding season is a good idea. A crude protein level of 12% or higher in their diets is ideal. A leaner bull is more desirable than a fat bull at breeding season. Fat especially in the scrotum can impair fertility for a considerable time. Remember after breeding season when bulls are pulled their nutritional requirements decrease substantially.
Since a good breeding bull is always a good investment, he is one worth protecting. If breeding pastures have a lot of bush, make sure bull rings are removed. If hardware (peritonitis) is a problem when a bull is first purchased placing a good quality magnet in their stomach (reticulum) may be good insurance. Most illnesses with bulls come on subtly and weight loss is often the first sign. When checking your bull during breeding season pay particular attention to his gait. Wobbliness or knuckling may be the sign of a back problem. Swelling on the sheath from cuts or a broken penis require immediate bull replacement. By implementing the above strategies hopefully, a long reproductive life can be attained from your bulls. Always buy your bulls from reputable purebred breeders and make sure they have had their initial breeding soundness evaluation done and are up to date on vaccines. Over the years many a breeding bull has died from a clostridial disease because vaccinating had been missed. In the winter ensure bulls are adequately bedded and have good wind protection to avoid frozen testicles. Look after those herd bulls as you have paid good money for them and they possess half the genetic potential in your herd. Speaking of genetics, it is always good to collect a sample of tail hair follicles from each breeding bull in case genetic testing is ever done. Ensure all of your bulls have a good breeding season and outstanding conception rates to build on the optimism in the cattle industry with a great calf crop in 2021. Look after those superior herd sires! This article applies to purebred breeders herd sires as well. We all know they do a great job getting yearlings and two-year old’s ready for sale. We just need to carry on this same trend in subsequent years.
LIMOUSIN VOICE / DECEMBER 2019
Many bulls are culled because of feet and leg problems. As bulls mature and get bigger tremendous pressure is put on their feet and legs especially in the breeding season. Preventive maintenance on their feet by trimming may extend their useful life as well as preventing lameness problems during the breeding season. Again, lots of exercise on hard terrain (not peat moss) goes a long way towards keeping the toes short. Many hereditary conditions involving the feet can be selected against such as corns, spiral and corkscrew claws. Even when young bulls are selected with great feet it may be necessary to trim them in their later years. Look very closely at your bull’s feet every year. Trimming one to two months before breeding season is ideal. The trimmer can then be more aggressive knowing the bull has several weeks to recover before being turned out.
