CANADIAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION

AB. Sixty Gelbvieh and Gelbvieh influenced heifers are set to start the project February 19th. Cattle producers from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, who use Gelbvieh genetics have enrolled heifers born from February to April of 2020 in the project. The project measures docility and its potential impact on growth and conception rates. Fertility and growth are two primary economic drivers to the profitability of the commercial cow herd. While Gelbvieh influenced females already make great cows, this work will help to further solidify and improve on that already well deserved reputation for docility, productivity, and fertility. To better quantify and assist in selection for these traits by breeders and commercial users of Gelbvieh genetics, the project will collect a wide array of data. Docility will be recorded using a temperament assessment scoring system. It will consist of a combination of scores based on how each heifer behaves in the chute without being squeezed, and flight speed (chute exit speed). Growth performance will be evaluated using a combination of GrowSafe Beef weights and chute weights. Carcass ultrasounds, cervical scores, and AI conception rates will also be collected to enhance the data collection for the project. DNA samples will be collected on heifers for potential use in finding informative DNA markers for these extremely valuable traits. When tied to the Canadian Gelbvieh Association database and a state of the art genetic evaluation, Gelbvieh is positioning itself to provide real value to the beef industry. A capsule collection beginning with winter wear and moving into spring and summer,” Tomina said. The line will use materials sourced from local suppliers as much as possible. Textiles will be obtained from mills in the US and insulation quilting done by a local Manitoba firm. Packaging will be eco-friendly and domestically made. “Our staff at the Deasil sewing factory have many years of experience specializing in outdoor wear, including clothing for men and women,” Cheryl said. They will also count on young entrepreneur and pattern maker, Shelley Ediger of GarmaTech, Winnipeg. Her farm background and resulting practical insights will provide guidance with real-life application and requirements to match her technical expertise. Tomina is responsible for advertising and social media campaigns while Cheryl oversees the sourcing of fabrics and components, production and shipping. Marketing plans are a combined effort.

Getting the Word Out They’ve been communicating with their audience and potential customers on Facebook and Instagram and are happy with the reception they’ve been receiving. “We’ve had plenty of excitement and support which is wonderful, and it’s good to know other women are excited about this, because they definitely deserve quality workwear for every day in their job and professional life.” Rolling D officially launched in early February with their very first piece, the Home Farm Vest, available for purchase. “It’s amazing that we can sell directly to consumers and make our clothes available to anyone with internet. We hope to make it accessible to everyone,” she said. For now, they’re concentrating on the Canadian market, but long-term goals include expanding the Rolling D Workwear option to

And for production qualities, Chad says the bull is a standout. “We weighed him about two weeks before the show and he was he was just short of 2400 pounds. By the time we got to show, I'm guessing over 2450 or somewhere in that range,” he said. “There's a lot of red meat in a bull like that. He's not huge framed, but just carrying that much muscle mass I think he's got a lot of good in him for the industry. And I think calves sired by him will feed well and convert forage into pounds, and ultimately make you good beef.”

With the win in Lloydminster, Chad and his bull can boast an undefeated season. Chad is grateful to the Lloydminster Exhibition Association, without whom there wouldn’t have been a show at all. “I really want to commend Lloyd for sticking their neck out and doing that. I'm sure it wasn't an easy task, judging from the emails we got with the rules and regulations they had to follow to make it go and not get shut down,” he said. “I can't thank them enough for putting on this event. And the sponsors as well for putting their foot forward and helping put this show on.” “It was excellent to be there. I'm very glad we went.”

For all her charms, Kevin said her show success is not 100 per cent in the hands of the breeder, owner, or exhibitor. “Ultimately, that decision was made by other people than us. But we just thought she was amazing when we saw her with her mother, and then we asked people we know what they thought of her and everybody thought she was an amazing heifer.” She went back to Brooking right after Agribition and has been living there since. She made a trip to the States to be flushed, and got some pregnancies from the IVF. A recipient female carrying a Countess embryo set a pregnant-recipient record for the breed. “Hopefully she's the best donor cow in the embryo program. We have some calves off her

now that are three weeks old. And it's a little early, but they're big and square and they kind of resemble her and they have a bit of a presence already,” Kevin said. “We just hope that they continue to grow that way.” She has been crossed to Coleman Bravo 6313 and a heifer out of that bull “looks really good,” he said. “And we have some heifers and bulls out of Conley South Point [8362] bull and they all look really good.” She is about due to calve out her own heifer from S A V Raindance 6848. Kevin says she carries excellent traits for the production side of the business. She's feminine, deep, and long he said, with a perfect udder, great feet, and a “great big deep hip on her.” “These are all ultimately going to be traits that we would like to see in the commercial production side for us,” he said.

“She's calm and she's quiet. One of her bull calves is quite the little herd bull. He comes up and visits with you. He has a presence, we'll say.” Kevin says there's a certain amount of pressure to get her genetics out on the market. With half a dozen bull calves already, he expects one to sell in a bull sale next year. And he’s looking forward to the possibility of showing—if there are any shows. “If there's shows and everything works out, I would ask Justin to continue to show her,” he said. “And we hope that some of her calves will be able to show for people to see this year, because if they come up at all like their mother, they're going to be pretty darn good.”

They may look at showing her in a pair with a calf, but that’s not necessarily the plan. “I hope we can show the calves as individuals. We'll probably do something, take them where people can see them,” Kevin said. “But we're pretty excited. The one’s kind of a yard pet already.”

Chad Wilson calls it “the icing on the cake”

If you had watched your Canadian Champion Hereford bull win the Supreme title at the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Congress, how would you describe the feeling?

Chad Wilson of Haroldson's Polled Herefords in Wawota, Saskatchewan had that experience last month. His reaction? “It was pretty neat.” In an interview, Chad has that calm, quiet demeanor often associated with ranchers. It’s not that he doesn’t find his success exciting—he’s just not inclined to shout about it. He co-owns the bull, Haroldson’s United 33D 36G, with Hoffman Ranch from Thedford, Nebraska and Poplar Meadows Angus from Houston, BC. And not only did he breed the bull, he bred both of his parents. Haroldson’s United won the President’s Classic as a calf at Agribition in 2019, was named Canadian National Champion bull later that week, and placed in the top ten at the Agribition Supreme show—one of very few calves to have that distinction. “So I guess he’s a national champion up here, and now he’s a national champion down there,” Chad said. Chad wasn’t able to attend the show in Oklahoma. Watching the live stream as the bull won his class was “fairly overwhelming,” he said. But one drawback to following remotely was he couldn’t really get a sense of the competition. “I wasn't there to see what he was up against,” he said. Winning the breed was the big thrill—it was what he had set out to do. As far as the Supreme goes, it’s like he was just happy to be there. “I guess winning the Supreme was icing on the cake. To win the breed down there was certainly a big goal, and then I didn't put much thought into the Supreme, really,” he said. “And then when he won it, I mean, obviously, it was pretty rewarding.”

“That makes it unique having raised his dam and sire...That cow family's been one of the main cow familes in our operation.” Recognizing an accomplishment of such magnitude is a team effort, Chad is grateful to everyone who helped along the way – especially the Hoffman Ranch team who developed the bull through to his Supreme win. Haroldson’s United showed his potential early. Chad says he stood out as a calf in the summer of 2019. “At four months of age, you could tell that he certainly had some potential,” he said. “That was before we went to Agribition with him as a calf, and I sure liked him then. He was starting to separate himself at that point in time.” And now, Chad describes the bull as “very complete.”

“Just the volume in the middle and the substance that he has. For a bull that has that much power, he's still exceptionally sound.” Obviously that’s not just breeder’s pride—judges have recognized the bull’s quality, and Poplar Meadows paid a record $215,000 for a one-third share. But the story of the breeding program at Haroldson’s is indeed remarkable. United’s dam and sire were both raised there, and the female side of the pedigree is a huge asset for the ranch. “That makes it unique having raised his dam and his sire,” Chad said. “That cow family's been one of the main cow families here in our operation. And his grandmother has the most progeny in the Hereford breed as far as I know. She's been incredibly influential.” He said they’re expecting “quite a few” calves off the bull this spring, “and we’re looking forward to that, and we’re looking forward to seeing what kind of an impact he can have on the breed. “We’re hoping his offspring will have that extra quality,” he said. “Time will tell.”

With KDP Miss Hoya Hayleigh, it all came together. “She's surpassed all of our expectations. Even at the time we bought her, I wouldn't have ever guessed that she would have grown and matured into such an elite heifer,” Toby says. “I think it's just her ability to combine a lot of power, a lot of performance, and a lot of body with a really, really unique look out front. And structurally, she's almost flawless. To do all of those things together is really hard to do. “And we were just lucky enough to find one and have her grow and mature as good as she did.” Judges and fellow breeders see the heifer’s strengths as clearly as Toby does. While Toby recognizes there’s no such thing as a perfect animal, he says it’s pretty hard to find any flaws on this one. “We've shown cattle competitively for a few years now, and even in all of the good ones, there's usually something to change. But you know, I've shown this heifer three or four times now and I've only ever heard one judge try and put a hole in her. I've never owned-in on an animal that has been that fault-free before and just had so many high compliments from all kinds of breeders and judges,” he said. Heading into Louisville in November, Toby had every reason to be confident. But given that NAILE is one of the biggest all-breed shows on the continent, if not in the world, he was thrilled just to be part of it.

“There's a lot of cattle of all breeds going in and out for ten days, constantly. So yeah, it was it was really cool to be a part of it for sure,” he said. Considering his goal was just to get there, he said it was “unreal” when they won. He had started out looking for an animal that would fit in at the big events—instead he ended up with a heifer that stands out. “I would have never guessed that we would have won, that I can stand out at those big shows,” he said. “If you would have told me that she would win whatever class, and maybe get a piece of a couple other divisions along the way, I probably would have been happy. “But the fact that she's been winning some of these bigger shows this fall, it's been unreal. And it’s something that I don't know if we'll ever be able to do again, so we're just kind of enjoying it while we can.” When their show run was getting going, Toby wasn’t sure it would be much fun at all. The Covid-19 pandemic was just reaching North America, and there was all kinds of uncertainty about everything from cross-border travel to appropriate distancing and the use of face coverings at the show sites. He said he was nervous about crossing the border that first time, but once he had cleared customs things seemed normal. It stayed that way, more or less, through the summer. Fall was slightly different, he said. People were more selfconscious about handshakes and keeping their distance, but they adjusted and the show went on.

“It's been unreal. And it's something that I don't know if we'll ever be able to do again, so we're just kind of enjoying it while we can.” “Louisville was about as normal as it could be, I guess. We had to wear masks in the barns and in the show and everything, but aside from that it was honestly pretty normal,” he said. “It just felt good to be back at a cattle show and have a little bit of that normal experience.” KDP Miss Hoya Hayleigh won one more show last month, the Cattlemen’s Congress National Simmental Show in Oklahoma City, before she’s due to calve in February. Then Toby says they will set her up as a donor and send some embryos home to Black Gold. “Hopefully we’ll have some calves on the ground in January 2022,” he said. Finding the right mating is an ongoing process—a “million-dollar question,” as Toby puts it. “She offers a lot of versatility. I think she has enough power and performance to raise us some high quality

bulls,” he said. “But at the same time, I think she's good-enough looking and good-enough built to raise us some more heifers, possibly show heifers like herself. “We just have to figure out what works and what doesn't. I imagine it'll take a couple of years to get that figured out, but we're sure

excited to see what she can do.” He says that for developing the Black Gold herd, having a fault-free, versatile, powerful top-of-the line champion female like KDP Miss Hoya Hayleigh is “a darn good start.” “I'm hoping she will have a large impact in our herd, and I guess we'll just see how good her offspring are once we get them on the ground. I don't want to get too excited until we’ve got them.” And he’s open to showing her in Canada as a cow-calf pair, but that isn’t a priority at this stage. “We’re not trying to plan anything too far ahead, we just want to get her into production,” he said.

It’s fair to say 2020 was a dismal year for the show industry everywhere, but especially in Canada where so many premier events were cancelled. In that sense, it’s exciting to see somebody have a breakout year. And for Toby, the dream of just being in the ring in Brookings last July led to an amazing run and a championship season. “Just to win some of these shows is really surreal. And it's something that I don't want to plan on ever doing again,” he said. “But if we ever have the opportunity, I would be jumping all over it.” He and his brother Ryley, and the Udells, have talked about finding another show animal for next season. But KDP Miss Hoya Hayleigh has set a high bar.

“I don't know if we'll ever find that heifer again, and if we don't, I'm probably okay with it.”
