“It is a great honour to be involved with an organization that recognizes the importance of the agriculture industry in Alberta and that is committed to continuing the legacy of one of Canada’s most recognized livestock shows, Farmfair International” says Jones. And to add to that recognition, Farmfair International has secured $210,000 in added prize money to go to the breed shows. The credit amount will be revealed closer to the sale date, and will drastically increase a junior's spending capacity at the Wish List 2021 sale. “Breeder’s Purse Credit” contributors include: Jonus Cattle Co, Hilltop Gelbvieh, Towerview Ranch, Pearson Farms, Limestone Stock Farm, Brittain Gelbvieh, BNH Livestock, Jace Cattle Co., Dusty Rose Cattle Co., Milne's Gelbvieh, and Koziak Land & Cattle. While Bonanza was originally planned to be held in Brandon, Manitoba, an organizing committee of juniors and adults from Alberta and beyond pulled this show together in less than a month to bring juniors together for the first time in two years. For those juniors that could not attend in person, the CJHA also hosted a virtual show with both conformation and non-cattle classes through AssistExpo. Results are available on the CJHA Facebook page. Congratulations to all winners and thank you to all of our generous sponsors and many volunteers who offered their time to make this event successful. Part of Bonanza 2021 was the new Heifer Lottery show. The CJHA Heifer Lottery program awards vouchers to juniors from across own herds. Any junior, with or without a voucher, can purchase a female from a sanctioned heifer lottery breeder or sale to be eligible to be shown in the Heifer Lottery show. This year, the CJHA also added an additional $10,000 to voucher funds beyond what was collected from generous Hereford breeders, allowing 17 juniors to receive Heifer Lottery vouchers. Additionally, Hereford influence females will now be eligible for purchase under the Heifer Lottery program in the upcoming project year. Watch the CJHA Facebook page and Instagram (@canjrherefords) for more updates on junior programs throughout the year, including the Semen Donation program this fall.

Unfortunately, the people who need to know all this—Canadian consumers—don’t. Sarah Wray and Ben Wilson are filmmakers with Story Brokers Media House. Their short film Guardians of the Grasslands tells about the ecological benefits of beef production, and its role in sustaining the threatened prairie ecosystem. The film has been screened at film festivals across North America, and has won several awards. More importantly, it has opened the eyes of many viewers, especially urban dwellers who had not previously been exposed to good-news stories about ranching and the environment. Sarah describes herself as a “farm girl,” raised on an Angus operation near Bashaw, Alberta. “I made

their website farm.com. “We started getting a lot of requests to do storytelling and video production for other organizations in the ag industry. And we just grew so much that it became our full-time occupation,” Ben said. Guardians of the Grasslands compares the importance of the native prairie ecosystem to that of the planet’s best-known environmental causes, rain forests and coral reefs. It confronts viewers with some difficult facts: only about 20 per cent of native grassland remains, yet it is home to 80 per cent of Canada’s species at risk. But one ranch can sequester the equivalent of 100,000 Canadians’ annual carbon emissions. These facts were stunning even to Sarah and Ben when they first learned them.

“I think that's exactly why we made the film— to have people stop long enough to reconsider a narrative that has been created over the last few decades around what cattle mean to the Canadian environment.” “The shutdown started happening, so we quickly pivoted and made the film available for private screenings,” Ben said. “Within less than a year, I think there were over 300 private screenings of the film across Canada, across the U.S., and in other countries including South Africa, Europe, all over the world. People were really interested in hearing more.” Meanwhile, Sarah and Ben continued entering Guardians of the Grasslands into virtual film festivals and offering online viewings. “We were disappointed that we didn't get to attend some of the bigger festivals in person. We would have travelled to Vancouver, there's one in New York and one in Montreal and Ottawa, and several in Toronto that we would have considered attending in person,” Ben said. “But on the upside, we were able to participate in a lot of festivals that we maybe wouldn't have been able to get to physically, by being part of virtual speaker panels with several filmmakers. We were answering questions from the public and from people who were really interested after watching a virtual festival. “So that was really neat. I think we were screened at 25 different festivals and received eight awards,” Ben said. The awards from various festivals were for best director, best research, best cinematography, and best short documentary. But more important than winning awards, Guardians of the Grasslands has been opening eyes—and maybe changing minds. “It was really neat for Ben and I when we went to these festivals. There were people who are environmentalists, who are scientists. There were people who had a passion for art and

So it was met with a lot of questions and a lot of investigation into ‘so what do we do now?’ “I think that's exactly why we made the film—to have people stop long enough to reconsider a narrative that has been created over the last few decades around what cattle mean to the Canadian environment.” Ben recalls a stunning moment when a potential antagonist got up to make a comment. “In Toronto at a screening, there was a woman who stood up during a Q&A session,” he said. “And she said, ‘full disclosure, I am a vegan activist. During the Supreme Championship, Violet was a handful for Stella to control. “She wasn’t acting very nice,” complained Stella. “I was pretty frustrated with her. She wanted to go back to the stall and was being the sassy heifer who knows what she wants.” When it came to decision time, Judges Justin Morrison, Kyle O’Neill and Rodney Hollman had a tough chioce to make with so many quality animals competing. “I got lucky to win,” declared Stella. “It’s mostly the animal

possibly as a cow/calf pair. “We’ve flushed her once already and we’ll continue to do that. She’ll go into the donor program at our place so we can try to duplicate her,” she explained. Stella plans to use the gift card she won to buy more show supplies and to share her cash winnings with Hawkin as they both worked hard with Violet. “The favorite part of Summer Synergy for me was showing Violet,” said Stella. “I really like showing and want to keep doing it. I love going to Summer Synergy because my friends are there, and I get to show my animals.” Stella receives congratulations from mom Jill after her Supreme win. © Top Stock

Levi Martin and CHM Luna 21F 16-year-old Levi Martin’s Summer Synergy experience was also filled with highlights as his 3-year-old commercial Simmental female CHM Luna 21F (Luna) and her calf Raya took centre stage. Luna was selected Champion 4H Female, Champion Commercial Simmental Female and finally took the top honors of Supreme Commercial Female. Levi and his parents, Dwayne and Paula Martin, along with sister Trinity, operate Martin Cattle Services in the Stettler, Alberta area. After moving from the Warburg region, the family built up their present farm, raising a mixture of Charolais, Angus and Simmental cattle. The Martins show out of the Hastings Coulee 4H Beef Club where Levi says the competition is fierce, but friends and fun are plentiful. Luna was purchased as a calf by the Martins from Chase Miller of Miller Livestock, Cremona, Alberta. “I liked her when I first saw her but was a little skeptical because she was a younger calf—March born,” said Levi. “When we bought her, she was a little smaller, not the biggest female in the pen they had, and maybe not having the sheer power of the others. But I think as she’s come on,

“I thought we had a good chance to win. I knew we were in the hunt, at least in the top three, as there were some other really nice cattle in the ring.” she’s started to put more spring of rib and stoutness in and she’s remained very nice fronted.” Her first major win came as a yearling at the Summer Synergy Jackpot Heifer Show where she claimed the Reserve Champion title. This summer, Luna nabbed Reserve Champion honors at the local Hastings Coulee 4H exhibition and Champion Commercial Female in the Regional show. Levi believed Luna had a decent chance during the Commercial Simmental Female show at Synergy but admits it was a happy and surprising situation when the win actually happened.

Later, during the Supreme Commercial Female competition, as judge Danny Skeels passed by Luna and Raya, Levi asked if there was anything wrong with his animal, what it might be. “I like to ask judges this question if I can,” Levi said. “Mr. Skeels told me there was absolutely nothing wrong with her and if she had been a purebred, she might be at his farm. There’s always worry for me, but I thought we had a good chance to win. I knew we were in the hunt, at least in the top three, as there were some other really nice cattle in the ring.” For the win, Levi took home a buckle and $500, along with a pair of buckle boards for the successes earlier in the week. He’s thankful to Summer Synergy and provincial 4H for putting on the show because he understands how tough the past year has been. “Luna is definitely going to end up in our cow herd. She’s a keeper and the keystone of my herd. I’d say she’s the nicest commercial cow I’ve ever had. Since I’m thinking about going into purebred Simmental, I’m going to take her genetics and keep breeding them purebred until I get a purebred out of them and go from there.”

Colton Hamilton Gets back to “The Classic” WORDS BY MONA HOWE

PHOTOS BY LOREE PHOTOGRAPHY, BOX T PHOTOGRAPHY, & SHOWCHAMPIONS

And after a year filled with uncertainty, Stampede Steer Classic exhibitors get back to the ring. orn and raised just up the road, Colton Hamilton is no stranger to the Calgary Stampede, and 2021 certainly wasn’t his first time setting foot in the ring for the Calgary Stampede Junior Steer Classic. This time, however, Hamilton would be the judge rather than an exhibitor at Canada’s most prestigious steer show.

B

Judge Hamilton’s roots run deep in the cattle industry. His parents, Gavin and Mabel Hamilton, started Belvin Angus 42 years ago. When they were married in 1975, Gavin worked for Colton’s great-uncle, David Bradshaw, at Aberlynn Angus. “This is how our family got started in the Angus breed,” he says.

“It was a really cool honor to judge the steer show, to be part of the history of it,” says Hamilton, who raises cattle with his family at Innisfail, Alberta.

Before then, the breed of choice was Shorthorn for the Hamiltons and horned Hereford for the Churches, his mother’s family. While both are good, solid foundation British breeds, “I’m biased towards the Angus and glad my parents chose that route,” he chuckles.

Growing up, showing their purebred Angus cattle at the Calgary Stampede was a can’tmiss event for Hamilton and his family. At that time, prior to Steer Classic moving to its junior format, open breed shows were part of the Stampede’s livestock shows. “I only showed in the Steer Classic one year,” he recalls, “but was always there helping my cousin and friends fit their cattle.”

54

FALL 2021

A couple years after completing his economics degree from the University of Calgary in 2006, Hamilton purchased the original family homestead from his grandmother. It was originally settled by his great-grandfather Matthew Hamilton in 1892.

Belvin Angus continues to grow and evolve with the next generation, which includes Hamilton, his sister Quinn and her husband, Brendyn Elliot. Their cow herd numbers have expanded to more than 350 head, supporting their annual bull sale in March and their recent addition of a fall female sale every second year. Increasing their herd numbers hasn’t been the sole priority though. “It is just as important, if not more, that we use and produce the highest quality genetics possible for our customers,” Hamilton explains. “Ninety percent of those customers are our commercial bull buyers,” he says, “so we focus on traits that are important to them.” This means they are constantly breeding efficient, sound, good mothers with good udders. “Cattle that can go out and work and be low input is one thing we strive for.”

judge,” he reflects. “Knowing that they value your opinion enough to ask you makes it a real honour to judge these shows.” The events, or lack thereof, over past year and half have added a whole new perspective. It has been no small task for the committees putting these shows together, and for the Junior Steer Classic it was no different. Normally hosted in downtown Calgary as one the Stampede’s events, this year the show was held at the Olds Regional Exhibition Megadome. “I commend the committee and all the people involved for following through and making this show work,” says Hamilton. It was equally challenging for the exhibitors to have cattle prepared for this level of competition. As a result, there were a few less

entries than usual, but it was still a great turn out considering the circumstances. “I applaud the kids that went to all the work to get these steers ready not even knowing if they would have anywhere to show. The level of dedication amongst these juniors is impressive,” Hamilton remarks. During the competition Hamilton sorted through at total of 42 steers weighing anywhere from 1,100 to 1,600 pounds. Even though the numbers were down slightly, he found the quality was as high as ever, which he appreciated. “It is always easy to judge good cattle. The more good cattle, the better,” according to Hamilton. Sorting through the preliminary splits, he analyzed each steer’s natural muscle, thickness over the top, structure and fat cover, as well as the overall eye appeal of the animal. The steers that rose to the top were sound, clean-fronted animals with

“I can’t stand here and tell you exactly how the steers would grade once the hides are off, but I can pick out the ones with the most red meat, the ones that will have good value in our industry at the end of the day,” he told the crowd during the show. He determines which steers are likely to yield higher by looking at their exterior make-up and feeling for fat cover over their rib. But genetics is the biggest determining factor when it comes to marbling in the meat. “Identifying marbling is a combination of real carcass data and EPD’s paired with knowing the animals genetics, and in that case the more data the better,” he says. “The champion drive was an exceptional group.” Hamilton was pleased with how well the Grand and Reserve Champion steers paired together, both coming out of the heaviest weight class at 1,480 and 1,460 pounds, respectively. “Especially when we got to the championship class of 14, they were the two

steers that came together and matched each other well. They were the most impressive phenotypically to look at, plus they were in the heavier end of the show, but still of the weight acceptable in the industry today. They had a nice amount of finish.” Grand Champion honours were awarded to Kehler Eaton of Lloydminster, AB with his black steer, Barrett, sired by Here I Am. Kehler took home $2,500 cash and $6,250 in scholarships for his efforts. Reserve Champion was claimed by Cheyenne Symens of Claresholm, AB and Blue, her Monopoly-sired steer. $1,500 cash along with $4,250 in scholarships were her rewards. A grand total of $24,000 in cash and scholarships was awarded to Junior Steer Classic Show exhibitors. In his final remarks Hamilton mentioned, “these kids do a great job clipping, fitting and showing these animals. It is very cool to see the huge amount of effort they put in and that they get out there and continue to do what they love. In the end, that’s what these steer shows are all about.”
