“The only thing constant is change.” Dear Readers, As I write this, the first day of winter appears to have arrived in Alberta. As the seasons change, I would like to announce some changes of our own here at Top Stock. This fall marks the end of six years covering the show industry in Canada, and the time has come to shift away from the publication as we know it, and so you are reading the very last edition of Top Stock. Firstly, I want to thank you for reading and engaging with us over the last few years. Since I started Top Stock in 2015, we have published interviews from influential individuals we were lucky to interview and glean their wisdom. We have printed photos of livestock that dominated the show ring and whose presence is now being felt as I print photos of their offspring. I like to think we helped provide a platform for juniors to celebrate their place in the industry. I felt immense pride every time I saw a Top Stock banner posted on social media or hanging in a show barn. But, it is time to start a new chapter. The industry has changed rapidly during the pandemic and I anticipate that this will continue as we move forward. On a personal note, I am finishing my film production degree from Toronto Film School and my desire to expand the videography side of Top Stock has been a determining factor in whether to continue the publication. In the end, I decided I had to prioritize the projects I wanted to pursue the most. I am grateful for what the magazine gave me – the experience of building and branding a new business, the luxury of being able to experiment with design and showcase new ideas, and most importantly, it gave me access to a network of dynamic, passionate, committed cattlemen and women that make the show industry what it is. I have no doubt that you will continue to build on the successes of the past to make the future brighter than ever. I want to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the amazing staff at Top Stock. Our invaluable sales representatives Tracy Kimmel and Meghan Hoffman put their heart, soul and many phone calls and emails into the magazine on both sides of the border. Cayley Brown has been my indispensable, self-motivated righthand, tracking down show results, pitching articles, and facilitating with writers and photographers. For the first few years, Sarah Buchanan of Golden Thread Livestock Images worked our Eastern Canada ad sales. She put me in touch with so many individuals that have proven to be assets to Top Stock, and for that I am grateful. Our writers, past and present, include Piper Whelan, Jeff Gaye, Brenda Schoepp, Bruce Derksen, and Mona Howe. They brought my ideas to life (or had better ones). The many, many photographers who have supplied us with show photos and show ring candids were an essential part of Top Stock. Their talent is immense and their contribution was invaluable. I also want to recognize the many show and event organizers who generously gave out magazines in their exhibitor packages, whose volunteers we endlessly harassed for show photos, and who let us give out banners at your events. It gave us great joy to be a small part of every single show day. Finally, an enormous thank you goes to our advertisers. Your contributions kept the lights on for the past six years, and your trust does not go unacknowledged. It was an honour to help market your cattle, and although the magazine ends here, I look forward to our many partnerships continuing through print, digital media, photography and videography. On and off through the fall, I have thought about what I wanted this letter to say, and have written different versions of it in my head. I am certain the show industry will be richer in years to come, and I look forward to being there with you as Top Stock moves on to its next evolution. Thanks for everything and see you down the show road. – Katie Songer

Cattle Battle No shows? No way! Indian River Cattle Company fills the gap.
I
t’s tough being a show family when there’s no shows to go to.
But when the showing gets tough, the tough get showing—even if it means organizing and hosting your own show. Faced with scant opportunities for exhibiting their cattle this season, Billy and Juanita Elmhirst decided to host the “Cattle Battle” at their Indian River Cattle Company (IRCC) operation east of Peterborough, Ontario in August. “The Elmhirsts are kind of a show family, that's what we love to do,” Billy said. “The last couple of years there’s been fewer events like that to participate in, and so we applied ourselves to putting one on ourselves.” Billy and Juanita recognized there was a pent-up demand among producers

“But it does take a lot of hands and we're really lucky to have an awful lot of friends and relatives who pitch in and help, whether they be marshalling or clerking or whatever it might be. It does take a lot of bodies and a lot of manpower to put this kind of thing on.” The show ran two rings with multiple classes, with the idea of giving exhibitors the benefit of two different opinions in the open show and the junior show, plus jackpot classes. “So anybody that won a class or a division had an opportunity to have their picture taken and use that for their marketing,” Billy said. An exciting event for the Elmhirsts and the IRCC team was a special IRCC/Elmlodge Influence class. “That was kind of nice,” Billy said. “We had anybody that had used our genetics, bought one from us in years past, or had semen from one of our bulls. That was pretty rewarding to see all those good cows out there.” “I think there was close to 15 cattle ranging from a bull calf or a cow calf or a heifer calf and bred yearlings, and they all competed for the award. So that was that was very rewarding for the day.” “We did the same thing for Bohrson Marketing team because we’ve worked with them pretty closely. So we had a Bohrson Influence class as well,” he said. The judging for the jackpot classes was a multigenerational family affair. “You pay 20 bucks to get your bull calf in the jackpot class, and my son, my father and I judged that class on a panel system,” Billy said. “And then judging the heifer calf jackpot we had three ladies: my mother, my daughter and my wife. “I think people actually appreciated that. Having the older generation involved was kind of a nice touch, it was nice to have them involved and be a part of the day.” Billy said IRCC is open to the idea of hosting another Cattle Battle next year if there is still a need. He is definitely encouraged by the response from this year’s show. “Everyone is just raving over the day. The vibe was tremendous and people are thankful and waiting for next year,” he said. “This isn't a long-term goal to have a show at our place every year, but if need be, we

probably would go ahead and do it again. But it took a lot out of us to get it put together.” If the show circuit comes back to life in 2022, the Elmhirsts can get back to concentrating on their own operation. But Billy said it’s a good feeling to be able
to do something for the people who raise and show purebred cattle. “It was good for the industry, but it was also good for us,” he said. “The feeling, the vibe of the day, was just unbelievable. It was just one of the best days we've ever had around here.”

n the true spirit of the cattle business, adaptations were made to ensure the health and safety of buyer
and seller at events over the past two years. Through technology, farms and clubs enjoyed full support from their customers. It was hard to give up that social interaction that we all crave and get our fix during purebred sales. The smell of sawdust and dung, coffee and burgers and the rousing conversations that make up our community, national and international family were missed. This lack of social contact may feel overwhelming at times. As we look ahead there may be days when we feel lonely or a wee bit down, grumpy, impatient, hopeless or detached, uncertain, overwhelmed or simply tired. All feelings are valued.

SPECIAL FEATURE
How do we gently, respectfully talk about these things in this space? Let us begin with the concept of simple abundance.
A World of Abundance The concept of looking around to appreciate what we have the most of is a business model I borrowed from some of my friends in the Middle East. It came from the desert. When faced with food insecurity they asked themselves: What do we have the most of? What they had the most of was heat, sand and space and that space was surrounded by the sea. After much deliberation the decision was made to scrub sea water through thermal technology using the abundance of water and heat, then piping the water inland. Once there, the water was captured and nutrients were added before going into the irrigation system. This nutrient dense water was applied to the sand which was seeded in legumes. The legumes fixed nitrogen and the harvested plants were later fed to the goats and sheep.
The manure from the goats and sheep went back to the land and were used to build soil. A new ecosystem evolved by taking stock on what there was the most of. Being in the purebred livestock business certainly assures that there are cattle in abundance and that they have value and importance to you. Looking at them with a wider lens allows for them to be seen not only as a point of revenue generation or contributing to natural capital. They are precious and intelligent beings whom serve you. Dr.Temple Grandin reminds us that food animals are for our use and that we need to respect that. And if we don’t get it – our end user, the consumer most certainly does. When the chips were
A world of
Abundance Turning to what we have to foster connection and community. down and there was a fear of a shortage of food, consumers looked at the nutrient value in their product buying. And beef was proven a popular choice. Not only that but the interruption in food supply has created strong advocates and deep respect for agriculture and there is an expectation to nurture our culture of equality and our culture of care. At no other time in the last 60 years have there been such unified voices for clean, safe and accessible food and respect for the hands that produce, process and prepare it. Your job is important. It goes beyond the corral gate. These valuable beasts offer us reprieve, income, build soil and at many times – companionship. They are worthy of our respect as they are part of our stock of simple abundance that also includes land, space, clean air, food, valuable friendships, beautiful families and supportive communities.
It is through the cattle that the connection is created. Our families, local community and our broader national communities are composed of people with purpose and with a shared passion. And today they are united with the same issues. You are not alone. You are part of a tribe or community of care. And now there is an opportunity for the creation of a larger unbreakable social ecology. The word ecology comes from the Greek oikos (house) and logos (study). It is described as the web of relationships or networks of living things. Appreciating the gifts of abundance and their close interaction with each other and all our stakeholders creates a strong societal ecology in our homes, businesses and communities. Strong enough to carry you. Strong enough to weather change.

Starting a Hereford
Showcase WORDS BY MONA HOWE

s hardy as the breed itself, Alberta Hereford producers keep finding ways to capitalize on challenges and change. With the departure of the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) from Edmonton’s Farmfair International followed by the uncertainty of a pandemic, one might have assumed dreams of new and improved agriculture events would be dashed, at least for the time being. Not to be discouraged, a key group of Hereford breeders has proved just the opposite. Looking to set the Hereford breed apart, these innovative individuals were hard at work behind the scenes developing a first-class event to accomplish exactly that. The inaugural Alberta Hereford Showcase, held November 4 and 5 in conjunction with the CFR at Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta, had been an idea quietly waiting in the wings for the past two years. The combination of available space, a collective audience with the CFR and a strong working partnership with Westerner Park provided the necessary opportunities for the organizing committee to host an event of this calibre. “Our main goal was to put together something fresh, something exciting to bring people together. As it turns out, after more than a year of not much going on, people were ready to get out and get involved,” said Dave Dennis, who spearheaded the event. “Folks have the desire to network with each other, they want to get out and socialize, and the Showcase provided them an avenue to do that.” Dennis and committee chairman Conrad Fenton agreed that hosting the new function at Westerner Park alongside the CFR helped to create the desired atmosphere and world-class experience for all those in attendance. The Red Deer venue offered an abundance of comfort and convenience by having the Herford Showcase, rodeo and tradeshows essentially all under one roof. “You go through one door and the Hereford exhibitors were all there; walk through the next door and you could shop the tradeshow booths; right next to that you’re able to watch all the CFR rodeo action. It really doesn’t get any handier than that,” said Fenton.

without trying to sell them anything.”
Hereford Genes The Hereford Genes Bull Event featured 31 head of yearling bulls and bull calves. “These bulls were paraded through the show ring and then tied up in a special stalling area for evaluation. Cattlemen and ranchers had one hour to look through this powerful set of bulls and mark their secret ballot with their top six choices,” said Dennis. From those ballots the top six bulls were pulled, and those breeders were rewarded with $500 in prize money, along with a trophy buckle for the overall Cattlemen’s Choice Champion Bull. Organizers felt this format was a perfect way to get commercial cattlemen involved and invested in the breed’s future. “The commercial sector is where the biggest part of our market is, so as breeders we look forward to getting the opinion of those cattlemen on what they are looking for within the Hereford breed. Ultimately, their opinion of our cattle is what matters,” Fenton remarked. “Colour coding the ballots for our commercial, purebred and junior Genes evaluators allowed us to add even more excitement to the event,” Dennis stated. One lucky rancher’s name was drawn from the commercial ballots to choose a bull to take home to use in their breeding program, and the breeder of that particular animal received $15,000. In addition, two names were drawn from the purebred ballots, with Joanne Fraser receiving a complete IVF flush courtesy of Ranchlands Veterinary Service of Carduff, Saskatchewan. Shannon

“Our goal at the end of the event was to have people planning to book their rooms for next year.”

Grabler was awarded a $1,000 semen collection voucher from Alta Genetics of Balzac, AB. Juniors participating in the Genes judging also had a shot at some great prizes.
Steak Out What better way to bring cattle people together than food, drink and time to ‘shoot the bull?’ Featuring nothing but the best Hereford beef, food stations were set up throughout the tradeshow area, allowing ample time for folks to socialize and visit sponsors’ booths. On display in the tradeshow were many sponsors, including HiHog Farm and Ranch Equipment, Rocky Mountain Equipment Company, BB Service Pro and the Calgary Bull Sale, along with various animal health providers, ranch wear vendors and of course the Canadian Hereford Association. At the Alberta Junior Hereford Association booth, junior members sold Ranch Life Wild Rags to fundraise for upcoming events.

calves and bred heifers from noteworthy herds. With auctioneer Ryan Dorran at the helm and Craig Flewelling and Rod McLeod ring side, breeders had a chance to add these highly sought-after genetics to their own breeding programs. Take it from Judy Finseth of the Canadian Hereford Association, the sale catalogue curator: “This was a rare opportunity to select breeding pieces from top Hereford herds in the country,” she said. The high selling female, Harvie OVHF Wild Envy 38H, consigned by Harvie Ranching, AB was selected by MC Squared, SK. The sale wrapped up prior to the second performance of the CFR, giving guests the option to attend the rodeo or to continue enjoying the fine Hereford hospitality well into the evening.
Western National Hereford Show As the largest and most prestigious Hereford show in Alberta, the Canadian Western National Hereford Show on November 5 had a record 185 entries. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the level
of exhibitor support for the show,” Dennis commented. “We had breeders entered that haven’t brought cattle out in years along with several first-time exhibitors.” Both the horned and polled cattle were well represented with nearly 60 breeders from Alberta and Saskatchewan competing for more than $38,000 in prizes during the twoday event at Westerner Park. Bow Valley Genetics of Brooks, AB, stepped up to sponsor the Champion Females and Bulls for the show. “Everything about this event was focused on creating the right kind of experience, not only for the visitors but for the exhibitors as well,” said Dennis. No detail was overlooked, right from A-list judges Rob and Gail Hamilton adjudicating the show to the full Hi-Hog steel setup arranged by Hi-Hog’s technical advisor, Doug Bidlock, all the way down to having plenty of shavings for stall beds. “We regret that this show ran over top of Stockade Round-up in Lloydminster, but if we wanted it to coincide with the CFR, the dates were already set in stone,” said Fenton. “They host
a great event up there, but we really wanted to focus this deal as much on the commercial breeders as anything.” Hosting the new event in conjunction with the CFR in a central location like Red Deer allowed them to cater to their main target audience of ranchers and cattlemen. “As far as other fall shows, as a committee we felt like a short threeday event like this still gave exhibitors time to get to other shows like Farmfair the following week,” he said. The committee was pleased to welcome Top Stock’s own Katie Songer as the judge for the All Breeds Junior Prospect Steer and Heifer Show. “It is a key element in involving the next generation of Hereford breeders,” Dennis pointed out. “We were pleased to offer this opportunity to all juniors in the cattle industry. It’s one aspect of the show we want to focus on growing in the years to come.” Excited to shine a spotlight on the Hereford breed, Dennis explained that “our goal at the end of the event was to have people planning to book their rooms for next year.” .
