Here we go heading into another brand-new year, with all the excitement and fun of calving the newest and latest genetics, and with the fun of watching them grow up. There is nothing that I enjoyed more when we were on the ranch, than watching the little rascals grow and play, and just make you love them more. The new year letter is “L” for all the little Leprechauns, etc. that come about in the year.

I want you to know that your Board met in early December, and I felt we came away reinvigorated and ready for the year ahead. It is our thought to try and put a plan in action to make a united front and add some consistency to the message that we want to promote. We have made the decision to invest in the future of the breed as we see a renewed interest in the addition of Limousin genetics into the beef chain. The momentum of the Limousin breed in the US is working its way this way and we need to work with this and promote the good of the breed – both as “The Carcass Breed” but now more importantly the maternal strengths that is an added benefit for the cowherd.

Here is a little crumb of info for you to watch for “LBS” to start your creative minds thinking as we

start the consistency in the message. I will leave that with you for this time.

On the heels of our very successful Legacy Project launch it is the thought that we will follow this in some way to continue the momentum. Over 4,500 head were added in the Legacy Project which far exceeded our expectation of the uptake of this program, and we are very happy with this and want it to continue. We are looking at doing a heifer project that will continue through to 2024 as we move forward upgrading our herd book.

Another project that we see interest and value in is the much talked about feed efficiency of our breed. We would like to implement some trials on this and are asking for some help and guidance in setting the foundation for this to make it feasible and worthy of the efforts. This could also work in harmony with a comprehensive trial that has been set up in the US this past year that is spearheaded and led by Mark and Tammy Anderson and will be right from conception forward with the ending being a feed out for comparisons of Limousin, Lim-Flex and Angus. This should be some of the most intriguing and helpful information that the Limousin breed could ever get, as it is ranch based and is a real-world trial.

Another project that is receiving extra discussion and serious thought is the actual percentages required for the purebred status in our herd book. We have never strayed from the original layout of percentages; however, it has been forwarded to us now by a core group of breeders asking for consideration of this. Part of the discussion is to be able to add a broader range of genetics to our base that are just outside of the parameters now and to assist in broadening our genetic base all the while keeping a solid Limousin base and allowing the breeding up of the percentages to happen at a quicker rate for purebred status. This is a matter that we are taking seriously and look for your input going forward.

As you can see, we have had some very interesting and timely discussions trying to head this ship in the direction to assist you the breeders to help with the bottom line for all.

I truly am enjoying the fellowship and meetings as I travel throughout for events and I have been very impressed with the people and the cattle that I have seen. I wish you the greatest success in marketing your bulls this spring and trust the new crop coming is exceeding all the expectations.

RAPPORT DU PRÉSIDENT

Nous voilà à l'aube d'une toute nouvelle année, avec toute l’excitation et fun de vêler les nouvelles génétiques, et avec le fun de les voir grandir. Il n’y avait rien que j'adoré plus quand on était sur le ranch, que de regarder les petits grandir et se jouer, pour que tu les adores encore plus. La lettre de cette année est ‘L’ pour tous les Leprechauns, etc. qui viendront cette année.

Votre conseil d’administration s'est réuni en décembre, et je crois qu’on est sorti de la revigorée et prêt pour l’année qui s’en vient. Notre idée est de mettre en place un plan pour faire un front uni et d’ajouter de la consistance au message qu’on veut promouvoir. On a décidé d’investir dans le futur de la race vu qu’on voit un intérêt renouvelé d’ajouter les génétiques Limousin dans la chaîne de bœuf. Le momentum de la race Limousin aux États Unis s’en vient par ici, et on doit être prêt à travailler avec ça pour promouvoir les forces de la race - en tant que ‘la race à carcasse’ et maintenant plus important l’importances des caractères maternel qui est un avantage supplémentaire pour le troupeau.

Voici un petit bout d'info à surveiller pour vous “LBS” pour faire réfléchir vos esprits créatifs

Je laisserai ça avec vous pour l’instant Suite au succès de notre ‘Legacy Project’ il est souhaité qu’on fasse suite à ça d’une certaine manière pour continuer le momentum. Plus que 4500 têtes se sont ajoutées au ‘Legacy Project’ qui a complètement dépassé nos attentes de ce programme, on est très content avec le résultat et on veut le continuer. On regarde pour faire un projet de taures qui continuera jusqu’en 2024 pendant qu’on mettra à niveau notre ‘herd book’.

Un autre projet qu’on voit le valeur dedans est l'efficacité alimentaire de notre race. On aimerait implémenter des essais la dessus et on cherche de l’aide et conseils pour que ça soit rentable et qui mérite les efforts. Ça peut être en collaboration avec un essai établi aux États-Unis cette année, qui est mené par Mark et Tammy Anderson et qui sera direct de la conception jusqu’au fin qui sera un comparaison en engraissement Limousin, LimFlex and Angus. Ça devrait être parmi l’information la plus intéressante que la race Limousin à pu avoir, vu qu'elle est basée sur la vraie vie.

On a eu des discussions par rapport à un autre projet qui est les pourcentages nécessaires pour

atteindre le statut d’un pur-sang dans notre herd book. On n’a jamais égaré de pourcentages originales, par contre, elle nous a été transmise par un groupe d’éleveurs pour être considérer. Une partie de la discussion et d'être capable de rajouter une base de génétique plus large à notre base qui est juste en dehors de nos paramètres présentement, et pour assister à élargir notre base génétique tout en gardant un base de Limousin solide et de permettre l’avancement des pourcentages plus rapidement pour le statut de pur-sang. Il s’agit d'une question qu’on prend au sérieux et on veut votre avis.

Comme vous pouvez constater, on a eu des discussions opportunes et intéressantes en essayant de diriger ce navire dans la direction qui va profiter vous, les éleveurs, le plus que possible.

J’apprécie vraiment la camaraderie et les rencontres pendant que je promène les évènements et je suis impressionné des personnes et les animaux que j’ai vu. Je vous souhaite du succès avec le marketing de vos taureaux ce printemps et j’ai confiance que les nouveaux veaux dépassent vos attentes.

WELCOMING SUE BYGROVE TO THE CLA

Born and raised on a beef farm near Carstairs, Alta., farm life has been in my blood from the beginning. Marrying a Saskatchewan farm boy, found me moving to the Land of the Living Skies (just across the AB/ SK border near Lloydminster). Alongside my husband Todd and our daughter Shelby, we own and operate Sky Track Ranch.

Our 4th generation ranch consists of a commercial cow/calf operation. We use Simmental and Black Angus bulls on our Black Baldie and Hereford momma cows. In addition, we also have a small handful of purebred Simmental cows. We enjoy raising a few club calves and have celebrated some monumental wins in the show ring with our steers.

I have spent the majority of my life working in the agriculture industry including working at semen and embryo facilities, registry for the Canadian Hereford Association, research projects for the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, grading beef, broadcasting online cattle sales for a media company, volunteering at the Lloydminster Exhibition and raising cattle of our own.

Any spare time is spent being a mental health advocate which has included public and online speaking engagements, gardening, cooking and sewing. I look forward to getting to know the membership and working with the CLA staff and Board of Directors.

Vu qu’on commence une nouvelle année, j’aimerais toucher sur les questions qu’on reçoit souvent dans le bureau et mentionner les services qu’on offre pour les ventes de taureaux. Ceci est une période très occupée dans la race, qui augmente les appels et courriels au bureau. Nous apprécions chaque interactions qu’on a avec nos 400+ membres, et on sait que de compléter vos demandes d’une manière rapide et efficace est important à vos entreprises.

Le CLA offre les services suivants pour les ventes de taureaux; publication de catalogue de vente gratuit sur les réseaux sociales, liste des événements sur notre site web, ‘eblast’ pour membres et corporations, listes d’envois postales, téléchargements de catalogues de ventes, logos et publicité Limousin pour catalogues, items promotionnels et présence de la directrice ou Président aux ventes sur demande.

J'aimerais me concentrer maintenant sur quelques questions communes, je vais commencer avec les transferts. Les transferts doivent être reçus dans 90 jours après la vente. Le papier transféré doit être produit par l’Association au vendeur dans 180 jours. Si vous avez un papier imprimé pour un animal, il doit être envoyer au bureau pour être transférer. Si vous avez perdu le papier, vous pouvez quand même le transférer en remplissant un formulaire disponible en ligne ou du bureau. Ou l’animal peut être transférer en ligne par le vendeur. Si vous avez acheté un animal et n'avez pas encore reçu un avis de transfert, svp contactez le vendeur. Finalement, si vous ne souhaitez pas recevoir des papiers sur les animaux que vous avez achetés, vous pouvez le modifier en ligne sur Digital Beef, dans l’onglet ‘Preferences’.

Maintenant on peut regarder les numéros d’enregistrements que vous voyez sur Digital Beef ou dans les catalogues de ventes. CPM ou CPF est un mâle pur-sang ou une femelle pur-sang. CXM ou CXF est un animal de pourcentage ou un Lim-Flex. CFM ou CFF est un animal fullblood. Un animal avec un prefix qui commence par URM ou URF n’est pas enregistrer et vous devez contacter

l’Association pour clarifier la raison. Cet animal peut avoir d' ADN en attendant ou peut-être n’est pas enregistrable.

Le conseil d’administration ont tenu un réunion positif en mi-décembre. C’était un réunion pour la planification stratégique et l'établissement du budget pour les 3 prochaines années. Le focus du marketing sera sur veaux d’embouche et les caractères maternels de la race. L’Association va sortir un nouveau campagne de marketing “Limousin Lbs. Pay” (les livres Limousin sont payants) et “Limousin Breeds Success” (Limousin sème du succès). Cet campagne sera le focus des annonces dans le Canadian Cattlemen, annonces en ligne sur DLMS, VJV et Heartland Livestock ainsi que les bannières, matérial imprimer et sur le site web.s well as on banners, printed material and the website. Si on regarde vers les mois plus chauds, le Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) organisent leur symposium annuel du 3-6 juillet, 2023 Calgary, Atla. Le“Precision Breeding” Symposium est une opportunité de 2.5 jours qui concentre sur comment l'industrie bovine peut améliorer la valeur par amélioration génétique. Svp me contactez si vous êtes intéressé parce qu’il existe des programmes disponibles pour aider à payer l’enregistrement.

L’assemblé annuel du CLA sera tenu encore cette année avec le Canadian Junior Impact Show à Spencerville, Ont. L’AA sera vendredi le 4 août à 19h. Il y aura un souper pour tous les membres du CLA et du CJLA avant l'assemblée. Il y aura aussi une opportunité de participer en virtuel. Les formulaires de nomination pour le conseil d’administration sont disponibles sur le site web et devront être reçus avant le 6 avril, 2023.

2023 – a new year and a new calf crop full of excitement and promise. The tattoo letter for this year is “L”. As we begin a new year, I want to cover some of the common questions we receive in the office and highlight the services offered for bull sales. This is a busy time of year in the breed which results in an increase in phone calls and emails to the office. We value each interaction we have with our 400+ members as we know completing your work in a timely, efficient manner is important to your business.

The CLA offers the following services for bull sales; complimentary sale catalogue postings on social media, events listing on website, e-blasts for members and corporate, mailing lists, sale catalogue downloads, logos and Limousin print advertising for catalogues, Limousin swag items and General Manager or President attendance at sales by request.

I would like to focus now on a couple of common questions we receive in the office beginning with transfers. Transfers must be received by the office within 90 days of the sale date. The transferred paper must be provided to the seller by the association within 180 days of the sale. If you have a paper printed on an animal it must be mailed to the office to be transferred. If you have lost the paper, you can still transfer by filling out an affidavit form. Otherwise, the animal can be transferred online by the seller. If you have purchased an animal and have not yet received notification of the transfer, please contact the seller. Finally, if you do not wish to receive papers on animals that you have purchased you can make that change yourself in Digital Beef on the Preferences tab.

Now let’s take a look at registry numbers that you may see in sales catalogues and Digital Beef. CPM or CPF is a Purebred Bull or Female. CXM or CXF is either a Percentage animal or a Lim-Flex animal. CFM or CFF is a Fullblood animal. An animal with a prefix beginning with URM or URF is unregistered and you should contact the seller or the office if you are unsure of the reason. This animal may have DNA

pending their ability to be registered or they may be an unregistrable animal.

The CLA Board of Directors held a successful board meeting in Saskatoon in mid-December. This was a strategic planning and budgeting meeting focused on the next 3 years. The marketing focus will be on both feeder cattle and the maternal traits of the breed. The association is rolling out a new marketing campaign #Lbs. #Limousin Breeds Success This new campaign will be the focus of the Canadian Cattlemen ads, online advertising with DLMS, VJV and Heartland Livestock as well as on banners, printed material and the website. Looking ahead to the warmer months, the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) will be hosting their annual Symposium July 3-6, 2023 in Calgary, Alta. The “Precision Breeding” Symposium is a two and a half day learning opportunity focused on how the beef industry can enhance value through genetic improvement across a range of attributes that affect the value chain. Please contact myself if you are interested in attending as there are programs available to help cover registration costs.

The CLA Annual General Meeting will be held again this year in conjunction with the Canadian Junior Impact Show in Spencerville, Ont. The AGM will be held on Friday, August 4 at 7pm. There will be a supper for all CLA and CJLA members before the meeting. There will also be an option to attend the meeting virtually. Nomination forms for the board of directors are available on the website and must be received by April 6, 2023.

CANADIAN JUNIOR LIMOUSIN ASSOCIATION

I hope everyone's Christmas and New Years was eventful and that everyone was able to stay warm! This winter the Canadian Shorthorn Association invited the CJLA to join them at the 2023 Shorthorn Stars Conference in February. Currently as I write this, the conference hasn't happened yet but the majority of the board members will be attending. It is sure to be a great experience! The CJLA would like to thank Triple R Limousin for their generous donation to the CJLA of a heifer calf in their recent sale and to everyone who bought tickets for the donation heifer. The board of directors have been working together to come up with ideas of how to spend these donated funds to benefit our current junior members and also increase the breed’s junior involvement. The board is currently working to develop a Herd Building Lottery program. While some of the program’s details are still being ironed out, I am happy to announce the plan of having the first annual lottery be drawn this summer at the CJLA Impact Show! Make sure to keep a watch for entry details in the coming months on the CJLA social media platforms. The lottery will have three prizes available to be won by juniors; a sale voucher to be used

Jules grew up in the Limousin breed on her family's operation Jaymarandy Limousin. She graduated from Casper College in Casper, Wyoming majoring in Agribusiness and Animal Science and is now attending Panhandle State University majoring in Animal Science (Nutrition).

to purchase a Limousin animal from any sale or privately from any breeder within the year, packages of semen, and embryos that are to be used to grow and develop the junior’s herd. If any breeders are interested in donating semen or embryo packages to this program, please contact me or any of the board members.

The CJLA Impact Show will be held August 2-5, 2023 in Spencerville, Ont. Many different breeders are willing to offer animals for out of province juniors to use, so make sure to make plans if you are wanting to borrow an animal for the Impact Show. There are lots of competitions, workshops, local tours, and fun activities planned for all ages. Once again there will be a silent auction held and now there will of course be the addition of the Herd Builder Lottery. This year is bound to be a blast and the board can’t wait to see all of those smiling junior faces this coming summer. This will be my last report until the fall so I will finish by thanking everyone for all of their support to the CJLA and to remind everyone that cookbooks are still available for purchase. BRIAN LEE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

JULES SMYTH – ROBLIN, MANITOBA

The recipient of the $2,500 scholarship for 2022 is Jules Smyth of Roblin, Man.

Founded in 2021, this scholarship is in memory of Brian Lee, a passionate supporter of the Limousin breed in Canada. Brian passed away suddenly in May of 2021. Brian and his wife Holli operated Hollee Limousin of Janetville, Ont. He played an important role in the Limousin breed, taking on leadership roles at both the provincial and national levels. Brian served as the CLA President from 2013-2015. He enjoyed showing cattle and many members will remember him as the Barn Boss at the Royal Winter Fair for many years. Brian was always a passionate supporter of the junior program and helped many young Limousin enthusiasts get their start in the breed. His passion for the breed and the juniors will live on through this scholarship. Applicants for the 2022 year were asked to answer; “In your opinion what are the 3 most significant changes that have happened with the Limousin breed since it first came to Canada?”

A JUNIOR'S POINT OF VIEW

For Taylor and Avery Annett of Preferred Limousin, Mildmay, Ont. it is clear that Limousin is more than just preferred, but rather the passion of, these keen teenage girls. While most 17 and 15 year old’s might be planning get togethers with friends and looking forward to weekends of relaxation after the busy school week, that is not the case for the Annett sisters. Instead, they are planning the next winning mating within their family’s Limousin herd and looking forward to weekends spent at cattle shows.

Their love for the Limousin breed stems from their parents, Bev and Wendy Annett, who have been Canadian Limousin Association members since the late 80’s. Bev is no stranger to the show ring, having hung a halter on many a Limousin female over the years. He purchased his first Limousin heifer in 1987 from HC Ranch, HC Wintergreen. More purchases followed from Belldoon Farms, Tom Rooney Limousin and Claire Robbins of HC Ranch. Wendy came from a commercial cow/calf operation with Limousin influence, along with cash crops and horses. With the purchase of a farm in 2000, they bought additional females from Dunford Royal Cattle Company to add to their already established herd. Today the family manages a herd of 30 purebred cows as well as a few commercial females. It is a team effort, with Bev’s knowledge of Limousin genetics and show experience coupled with Wendy’s attention to herd health and animal husbandry details, on top of being ‘show mom’, of course. Taylor and Avery have been immersed in all aspects of the seedstock operation growing up, and their passion for the breed and what Limousin brings to the table has grown.

are also a notable advantage to the commercial producer who uses Limousin bulls.

“The breed has improved and continues to grow as docility improves and females become more powerful,” Taylor and Avery agree.

They also take great pride in displaying their stock, and waving the Limousin flag proudly, at numerous shows throughout the year.

“Some of my favourite memories are from Limousin events,” Taylor says, “Spending time with my family and friends at sales and shows – it's always nice to

see all the familiar faces and socialize with people you have common ground with.”

“I also love having time to do what I love and spending time with my heifers at the shows,” Avery adds.

Taylor and Avery are both Canadian Junior Limousin Association (CJLA) members, and their involvement in the junior program has grown tremendously in recent years. Taylor is currently serving her second year on the CJLA Board of Directors in the position of Treasurer. She is also the Vice President of the Ontario Junior Limousin

Association (OJLA). Avery is an active member of both the CJLA and OJLA.

Both Taylor and Avery agree that getting to know other youth from across Canada that have common interests with them is their favourite part of being involved in the Canadian Junior Limousin Association. In addition to new friendships the sisters say they have also gained social skills, taken on responsibilities and both gained and earned respect amongst their peers.

Perhaps greatest of all, is the sense of accomplishment felt at a job well done representing their herd and the Limousin breed when they enter the show ring.

“Some of my proudest moments in this industry are seeing the cattle that we have been able to produce with our own genetics and how much progress we have made in recent years,” says Taylor.

Avery adds, “I feel proud to see all of the work put in and being able to feel accomplished in the show ring.”

They both credit their parents as being their long-time mentors and biggest supporters both at home and ringside.

As for advice for the next generation of young Limousin enthusiasts, Taylor says, “Never be afraid to ask for help. Everyone is so friendly and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Asking questions is how you learn and practice makes perfect.”

“Really get to know your animal well before you go into the ring so you can work together as a team instead of individuals,” is Avery’s advice – drawing from her own years of experience on the halter.

Looking towards the future Taylor says that she hopes the Limousin breed will see a wider spread of genetics in the years ahead, “More options for bulls and a larger population of cows in general – the number of purebreds needs to grow. To improve the numbers, we just need more people to get involved. Encouraging juniors to get involved is a good start, as well as selling and breeding more purebred cattle for people to purchase and gain a good base from.”

It appears Taylor and Avery will be continuing to contribute to that youthfully exuberant group of upcoming Limousin breeders that will continue to carry the breed forward. Avery is in grade 10 and is looking forward to a few more years of junior shows and mentoring younger Limousin enthusiasts. She hopes to see more families become involved and active in the Limousin breed. Taylor is in grade 12 and has aspirations of attending University in the fall and pursuing a career in agriculture and biology. She also wishes to eventually start her own herd and continue breeding quality animals that are going to yield and stay true to the “carcass breed” name that Limousin is known for while maintaining the eye appeal and maternal qualities to bring their A game in the show ring.

“We plan to stay involved with the junior Limousin associations as much as we can because that is the future of this breed and cattle in general,” Taylor and Avery conclude.

There is something to be said about raising your kids amongst the responsibilities and realities of life with cattle, and being able to share common passions and pursuits with your children, thanks to those cattle. The Annett sisters can certainly attest to ‘the places you’ll go, the people you’ll meet… all thanks to the Limousin breed’.

CANADIAN LIMOUSIN ASSOCIATION AWARDS OF DISTINCTION

The Canadian Limousin Association proudly recognized Payne Livestock as recipients of a CLA Award of Distinction in 2022.

PAYNE LIVESTOCK  2023 marks the 24th anniversary of one of the most decorated purebred operations in the Canadian Limousin Association, Payne Livestock. Rocky and Debbie Payne are the 2022 CLA Award of Distinction recipients.

Founded in 1999, Payne Livestock has been breeding Limousin cattle and showcasing their genetics worldwide. They are well known for their generosity, passion, and dedication to the breed that has been greatly recognized by other breeders and commercial producers in Canada.

Rocky bought his first Limousin female from the Pacesetter Sale in 1975 and the rest is history! Debbie was raised on a farm with purebred Charolais cattle and continues to develop and build her herd today. Married on June 8, 1991, they supported each other with their own herds and in 1998 built their farm where they reside today.

Through the years of breeding Limousin cattle, they have seen numerous females and bulls influence, not only their own program, but many herds across North America! RPY Paynes Derby 47Z went undefeated in all eligible divisions through three show seasons and has played a huge role in their maternal foundation through the years. A female that comes to the top for Rocky and Debbie that they are proud to have bred and raised is RPY Paynes Will I Do 23W. A Limousin female that to this day is the only Limousin female to be crowned the Legends of the Fall, All Breeds Champion. She then made her presence

known within the Payne Livestock program, being an instrumental donor. Her legacy lives on with daughters and granddaughters within their herd today. Other notable females throughout the years are Heatwave, Simply Irresistible, Princess and, most recently, Zena.

Four decades of memorable moments breeding and showcasing some of the best Limousin cattle in the world! They still cherish the memories of Caesar parties and social drinks after tie outs and sales with the many friends they have made in the industry. That is why they have become one of the most respected and decorated breeders in Canada, not only for their dedication to the breed but for their continued support of the Canadian Limousin Association and Canadian Junior Limousin Association!

DAVID CARSON FARMS & AUCTION SERVICES LTD. It is with great pleasure that the Canadian Limousin Association announces David Carson Farms & Auction Services Ltd. as the recipient of the 2022 CLA Industry Award of Distinction. This is an award that is presented to an individual or company that supports and promotes the Limousin breed and its breeders. David Carson Farms & Auction Services Ltd., located in Listowel, Ont., was started by a young David Carson and is approaching six decades in business. David has been an accomplished Auctioneer that has been selling beef and dairy cattle, machinery, and horses for over half a century. They have also had impressive accomplishments with breeding, exhibiting, and selling Clydesdale horses. Some of these accomplishments include selling horses to the famed Budweiser Clydesdales and Champion Six Horse Hitches at the Royal Winter Fair and the World Clydesdale Shows.

The facilities at David Carson Farms & Auction Services are second to none. They feature clean and well-maintained display areas for cattle and/or horses and an excellent sale ring with great visitor comforts for buyers and sellers alike. They host regular bred cow, dairy, and feeder calf sales throughout the year, which are operated in a professional fashion. Carson’s relationship with the Limousin breed and its breeders stretches back decades when they played host to the Annual Golden Opportunity Sale, that for years was held in conjunction with the Ontario Limousin Association Provincial Show. This event was held every August at this establishment and lasted through the 1990s and into the 2000s. In addition, every May, the Northern Lights Limousin Club held their annual consignments featuring cow/calf pairs that were ready to go to grass and breeding aged females. During the International Limousin Congress that was hosted by Canada in 2002 Carson allowed breeders from Ontario to display cattle at a central

location to the international guests before they headed to Calgary. Some historic dispersals and production sales have sold through the buildings in Listowel over the past decades as well.

More recently David Carson Farms & Auction Services has been a huge supporter of the Ontario Limousin Association in hosting a fall Limousin influenced feeder calf sale in October, as well as a Limousin influenced female sale in November. In the fall of 2021, they graciously opened their doors to the Ontario Limousin Association and allowed us to host a Junior Show and Display Day for our youth and breeders in place of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair that year and it was met with great attendance and enthusiasm. In the summer of 2022, the OLA used the facilities again to put on a Junior Limousin Show in the morning and then followed it up with a very well attended Annual Meeting. We would like to thank David Carson Farms & Auction Services Ltd. for their past, present and future support of the Canadian Limousin Association, our juniors, and our breeders.

MCCUTCHEON FARMS

"It looks like gravel, but it feels like gold,” Anna Haupt quotes in a post on her Facebook page ‘Dairy Farm “Tails” from Moo to You’. The storied road that led Anna and her husband Mark to take the leap into owning a butcher shop, and ultimately purchasing an existing dairy operation speaks to the ambition and work ethic of this couple. Anna’s Limousin roots have carried through to today and she strongly believes that Limousin is the best beef cross to use over their lower end Holstein cows for easy calving and ultimately beefier calves.

Anna’s parents, Ferdinand and Anita Haupt, immigrated from Germany with her two older siblings shortly before Anna was born. The Haupt family milked cows until Anna was in grade 8, at which time they made the decision to sell the cows and quota and transitioned to cash cropping and starting a herd of Limousin cattle, which would

become known as Bennville Limousins. In the years prior to, and immediately following the sale of the dairy herd, Ferdinand and Anita had been approached by a friend from Germany who was involved with the Limousin breed there. At the time, the German association was interested in importing polled Limousin cattle from Canada to introduce the polled gene into their population. Given their connections and ability to translate, the Haupt’s became involved with helping to establish relationships between Limousin breeders from Germany with breeders in Canada for the purposes of exporting cattle. They were also involved in organizing several visits and tours of German Limousin breeders in Canada. Anna and her sister soon joined the local 4-H beef club where her passion for showing beef cattle and the industry in general grew. Anna was a member of the Ontario Junior Limousin Association and had

the opportunity to become a director on the inaugural Canadian Junior Limousin Association board.

“One of my most memorable experiences was a trip to a National Junior Conference in Virden, Manitoba. Four of us juniors from Ontario made the long drive with our heifers to participate,” Anna recalls.

Anna attended the University of Guelph where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree with a focus in Animal Science. While at University, Anna met Mark McCutcheon, who had completed the Agriculture Diploma program at the University of Guelph and was back home working on his family’s dairy. The couple were soon married and had their first baby on the way. Anna worked in dairy nutrition for a local feed company. The pair had the shared goal of working together at something, but farming seemed unattainable without family backing as Mark had numerous siblings and succession planning was not on the table at the time. Needing more security for their young family, Mark made the

decision to leave the farm and worked for a brief time at a local butcher shop while he and Anna began looking at butcher shops for sale. There weren’t many.

“On a whim we ended up making a phone call to an older couple who owned a small shop just down the road from where I grew up. That phone call, which was a complete surprise to them, led us over the next few months to purchasing their farm property that included the small but very well-run butcher shop business,” Anna goes on to say, “It was a rare find because it was about as turn key as it gets. It was a well known, century old local family run business that made a really well-loved pork sausage. We worked with the previous owners for several months to learn all that we could and from there we were on our own.”

Mark and Anna continued making the sausage, which was sold at local grocery stores and farmers’ markets. They also added a storefront and began selling pork and all cuts of fresh beef – some of which was sourced from the Bennville Limousin herd. Seven years after purchasing the

initial shop, the opportunity arose to purchase another nearby shop which included a full abattoir. A kill floor allowed expansion into custom cutting and growth of the retail end of the business. They grew to where they were making 1,000 to 1,500 lbs of fresh sausage a week, cutting 2-3 custom beef a week, along with pigs, lambs and goats, running the storefront and supplying several local stores and restaurants with product. All of this with only Mark and Anna working along with one full time and a couple of part time employees.

“The butcher shop was a great business that we were able to grow and do really well with and that we are so thankful for, but for us there was also something really missing,” Anna recalls, “There was a dairy farm located across the road from the second shop and all spring and summer we watched as they went about field work and bringing in feed and I think that nagging feeling was always there that we really wanted to be farming. We started to look at dairy farms. I don’t even know why really, it seemed like such an unattainable thing, but Mark was persistent about it.”

A lot of crunching numbers and agonizing over the decision ensued and ultimately Mark and Anna put an offer on an existing dairy operation nearby.

“We didn’t end up getting that one and it was about the biggest sinking feeling ever. It was a turning point for me, personally, because up until then I really wasn’t sure we were doing the right thing but the way I felt when that offer was rejected made me realize I really wanted it just as much as Mark did, I was just really scared about it.” Shortly after they put an offer in on another local farm. Despite it nearly falling apart due to their own property sale falling through, they managed to pull it off and moved to their present farm near Hamilton, Ont. in July of 2019. The entire family quickly fell in love with their new farm. Their four children, daughters Evi (14), Helaina (12), Anya (8) and son, William (3) are all an integral part of the operation, especially the two eldest girls who help a great deal with daily chores and in the home.

Older equipment was included with the purchase of the farm and allowed them to get started.

“The cows were sitting at around 26L of milk/cow/day and the days in milk were fairly long. The cows were housed in a 30 year old free stall slat barn which had been retrofitted for a Lely A4 milking robot. Space for youngstock was very limited. They were housed on one side of the cow barn on slats. We knew when we looked at the farm that we would need to budget in either a new cow barn or a heifer facility. It was a steep learning curve for us. Although we had backgrounds in the industry, we had been doing something else for the last 10 years, we’d been completely away from it. On top of that milking with a robot was completely foreign for us and took a while to get on to. We actually hated the robot when we started out and were sure we’d end up putting a parlour in at some point. Today, I don’t think we’d change it, it has pros and cons, but we really enjoy the benefits it gives to us and to the cows.”

The old barn was too crowded, putting the older cows at a disadvantage. A lot of thought went into what changes were needed but all options for renovation involved pulling out stalls which meant no room for growth. The decision was ultimately made to build a simple, but comfortable new barn for the cow herd and renovate the old barn for the youngstock. In April 2021, despite it being a terribly wet year, construction began of a new cow barn which was completed in December of 2021. A Reverse Osmosis (RO) system was installed in the new barn due to issues with hard water and high sulfate levels in the well that was drilled. Well water is now run through the RO and the water is a huge improvement from the pond water that had to be used until the RO was installed.

“Water is a really big factor because it has a big impact on feed intake in the milking cows and also from a food safety standpoint for the milk. Our water is regularly tested and we have to have clean water samples on file,” Anna points out.

In 2022, renovations began on the old barn to house the heifers. During construction, the youngstock had to be boarded at a neighbour’s farm and brought home just prior to calving. To save costs, interior work has been done themselves, making it a slower, ongoing project. Presently, most of the penning work is done and the heifers are all at home again.

“At our size and being first-generation, just starting out here, we really don’t have the means for experimenting,” Anna says, “We built into the barn things that we were pretty confident would work well.”

Presently, McCutcheon Farms milks 60 cows with one Lely A5 Robot with an average production of around 37L/cow/day. This means that the cows visit the robot to get milked throughout the day as they please. They average 2-3 cows daily that they may need to go fetch to bring them up for milking because they haven’t come. The new barn is a sand-bedded free stall loose housed barn.

“The sand bedding in the stalls is excellent for cow comfort and udder health because it doesn’t allow bacteria growth. It is hard on equipment though,” Anna comments.

Calves are born and raised on milk replacer for the first 12 weeks. Heifers are bred at 1415 months of age for a first time calving at 24 months of age. After calving, a cow will milk for about 300 days with rebreeding occurring at 60-90 days in milk. At 300 days cows are dried off for approximately an 8-week dry period before they calve again for their next lactation. Sorting through and improving the herd has been a major focus for Mark and Anna over the last few years. They started classifying to help identify cows that excel in terms of phenotype. The robot gives a great deal of information about production and health on the cattle.

“These tools have really helped us to make decisions on culling.”

They also have a robot feed pusher which runs every hour to push up the feed for the dairy cows to maximize feed intake and ensuring all cows have good access to feed every time they come to the bunk.

Anna explains further, “It’s really important in a robot barn because each individual cow has her own, individual routine. With a milking robot, cows are never all pushed up to go milk in a parlour at the same time and all returning to eat at the bunk at the same time. They run by their own schedule so making sure there is feed access all the time is important.”

Since 2012, Anna has kept a herd of registered purebred Boer goats. During the time they operated the butcher shop she ran a larger herd of goats, selling some breeding stock and finishing the rest and selling all of her own market kids through the shop. With the move to the dairy farm, she had to downsize the goat herd due to space limitations so her main focus now is breeding stock.

Additionally, the couple crops about 370 acres, growing corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa in rotation. Overall, about half the land base grows the feed needed for the dairy and the other half is cash crop. The ration they feed consists of corn silage, haylage, ground corn, and straw with purchased mineral and soybean meal. Feed is stored in bunker silos. A couple of grain bins were already on the farm and one of them has a dryer which has been ideal for maximizing income from the extra crops.

Raising calves and heifers represents a significant cost on any dairy operation for feed, housing and labour inputs without return until they enter the milking herd. Sexed semen makes it possible to breed the top end cows for replacement heifers. The remainder of the lower end cows still need to have a calf to go into lactation, however, using a beef sire on those cows garners a much more profitable calf. The availability of sexed Holstein semen has meant that beef semen is being used more and more in the dairy industry to add value to these calves that are going to auction.

“A beef Holstein cross bull calf sells for quite a bit more than a purebred Holstein bull calf. Even a beef cross heifer calf at auction sells for more than a Holstein bull calf,” Anna explains, “Semen companies really seem to push Angus semen for this purpose to the dairy industry. But I don’t think Angus is really the best choice in terms of crossing on dairy because you end up with a calf that is too ‘dairy’, with the carcass characteristics really being diluted. To me, Limousin is an excellent fit for this purpose. For the dairy producer the calving ease characteristic that the Limousin offers is huge. Any beef semen I use has to have calving ease EPDs. My main objective is for my cow to have an easy, uncomplicated calving so she can have the best start to her lactation possible. Limousin fits those criteria.”

For the veal or beef finisher that purchases the calves, the Limousin cross calves will have better muscling and bigger loins.

“I feel that there would be benefit and opportunity to identify Limousin cross calves going through the sales ring. We get the odd red calf from

this cross, but for the most part they come out black and aren’t readily distinguishable at a young age from an Angus cross calf.”

Anna says that finding Limousin bulls in the semen catalogues of AI companies can be challenging, especially those with traditional characteristics of the breed. She finds red to be a bonus as it gives her more opportunity to get a more identifiably ‘Limousin’ looking red calf. Semen fertility is also a priority as getting a high producing dairy cow pregnant can be a challenge. AI companies also offer beef semen doses that are a mixture of a few different bulls for that reason, however, they are typically all Angus based.

“I have a buyer at our local auction who asks when we drop off if it’s a Limousin or an Angus cross because he wants the Limousin cross calves. He has indicated to us that there is a big difference in quality from the Angus cross calves because some take after the beef side but some really take strongly after the Holstein side. The Limousin cross calves are more consistently beefier. It really makes me think there is opportunity there to put a tag in those calves to identify them to the buyer as Limousin cross calves.”

Mark and Anna handle their beef cross calves the same as their pure Holstein bull calves. All calves get adequate colostrum as soon after birth as possible. On their operation, they typically leave calves with the cow in the calving pen for a few days. They are then moved to a

calf hutch and fed transition milk from the cow for 4 days before being switched to milk replacer. Dairy producers are required to report calf births to a National database with their National ID number and are not allowed to sell any bull calves through auction before 8 days of age unless selling directly to another producer (not through auction).

“Most of our bull calves are sold through our local sale barn but recently I have starting selling most of the beef cross calves directly to another producer who takes both the bull calves and the heifers. In the future I’d like to retain some of the beef heifer crosses to finish them ourselves,” Anna says.

The well-muscled characteristics of the Limousin breed makes it superbly suited for dairy herds to use.

“The Limousin breed has such an important role in the beef industry as a really top-notch terminal cross. I think breeders should make sure to stay true to the traits that set the Limousin apart from other breeds because those are the traits that make the breed valuable to the commercial sector, which is the backbone of the industry. I also think that there is opportunity to hone in on that beef dairy cross market because those traditional traits that the breed has, in addition to calving ease, are really well suited to that role. Dairy producers don’t necessarily know what traits are most valuable to the next producer who is finishing those calves, so let the industry in on your secrets, tell them why Limousin is a good fit.”

Andrew Ranches saw a significant premium on their 7 weight Limousin steers over the top of the market this March at The Gather Sale, Bow Slope Shipping Association, Brooks, Alta. Their 7 weight steers sold for 223.75 with the average for 7 weight steers being 209.21 over the 3-day event.

Andrew Ranches made true on their slogan of ‘striving to produce the finest Limousin feeder cattle on the planet’ again this fall. Limousin steers at 534 lb. average weight brought 304.20 FOB ranch at Youngstown, Alta. sold August 11, 2022 forward contracted for mid-November delivery.

Further, Tim and Lois Andrew of Andrew Ranches offered 837 lb. open yearling grass Limousin heifers on DLMS September 1, 2022 which brought 231.00 delivered to Bow Slope Shipping Association, Brooks, Alta.

B Bar Cattle sent their annual trailer load of January/February born Limousin steers to the August 16, 2022 Saskatoon Livestock Sales, Saskatoon, Sask. pre-sort and came home with a price of 260.50 on the 738 lb. steers. SLS market reported 170.00-208.00 for 7 weight steers that week. These Limousin genetics brought 52 cents over the top of the market that day!

NORTH AMERICAN LIMOUSIN FOUNDATION REPORT

We are looking forward to 2023 here at NALF and the continued working relationship with CLA and their membership. NALF is moving forward into 2023 with our board intent on continuing to develop new tools for their membership moving into the new year. The cattle market continues to change and evolve, and our intention is to provide the tools, EPDS and indexes that are relevant to the commercial cattle producer as we move forward.

As the commercial cattle industry has become more familiar with the genomic process and the value it provides, there is a high demand in the country to be genomically enhanced prior to purchasing new genetics or paying substantial premiums for high quality seedstock. The marketplace is now demanding that most cattle be genomically enhanced as further proof of high quality particularly on the traits of high economic value.

The good news is that our cattle evaluation produced through International Genetic Solutions continues to grow and improve as well. It is the largest cattle evaluation in the world that lets the commercial cattle producer evaluate different breeds of cattle on an equal basis. Marker effects continue to be updated annually by

the science team at IGS as well which continues to improve the accuracy of our cattle evaluation.

Recently in November, an IGS cooperator meeting was held in Denver and the group was updated on progress of the weekly evaluation along with new trait production that is in the pipeline at IGS. NALF is actively promoting the development of the dry matter intake EPD. IGS is working on that as well as development of a mature cow weight EPD.

In August, the NALF board moved to work towards providing new updated indexes utilizing IGENDEC software provided by the Beef Improvement Federation. To accomplish this more accurately, the board also approved the development publication of an average daily gain EPD and dry matter conversion EPD to be utilized in the terminal index as well.

At the IGS meeting, the group discussed the possibility of including a dry matter conversion EPD and potential cost-of-gain EPD to run alongside of the ADG and DM intake EPD to more accurately measure cattle that are more feed efficient in a form that is directly applicable to the commercial cattle industry.

This is actually an exciting possibility where superior feed efficient cattle will be better identified through a trait deck that commercial cattlemen actually understand. Furthermore, these traits are very marketable on high quality feeder cattle whether they are sold via video online auctions like Superior or Western or direct in the country. We will keep you posted here as well as development happens.

The Masterfeeds Show Cattle of the Year Awards recognize the top show bull, top show female, top show sire and top show dam for that year as determined by a point system based on placings at qualifying shows. In order to qualify for points a show must have a minimum of 30 head of Limousin cattle. In addition, Limousin animals who win a Supreme Champion title at a show with a minimum of 30 head of cattle of any breed receive additional points.

SOCIAL NEWS CONDOLENCES

1 The Canadian Limousin Association stands among the entire industry in mourning the sudden passing of Canadian Cattlemen’s Association President, Reg Schellenberg, on December 2, 2022, at 63 years of age.

“Reg’s legacy and impact on the Canadian cattle industry will be felt for years to come. His gentle demeanor and strong character are qualities that many of us in the industry looked up to,” said Nathan Phinney of New Brunswick, who will now become CCA’s new President. “He will be fondly remembered for being a tireless advocate for cattle producers, taking a particular interest in advancing the priorities related to animal health and care, as well as protecting and preserving our industry for the next generation.”

Reg was first elected as a director to the CCA in 2010 and became CCA’s President on March 25, 2022. He served as co-chair of the Foreign Trade Committee from 2020 to 2022 and cochaired the Animal Health and Care Committee with Pat Hayes from 2016 to 2020. He also represented CCA on the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA). Prior to the creation of the Animal Health and Care Committee, Reg chaired the Animal Care Committee.

In 1990, Reg, Shannon and their 3 children established Perrin Ranching 1990 Ltd. in the hills along Lake Diefenbaker, south of Beechy, SK. Throughout his life, Reg took pride in caring for his animals. He was always known for having quality cattle, performance horses, and well-trained working dogs. Life on the ranch required 365 days a year commitment, but Reg always made time for family, friends, and faith. He was truly a “hero” to his family.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with Reg’s wife, Shannon, his children, and his grandchildren during this very difficult time.

2 The Canadian Limousin Association extends condolences to the Belanger family of Boulder Land & Cattle Company, Omemee, Ont. upon the passing of Grandpa, Bernard Clancy, on October 9, 2022. Bernard had been a Limousin breeder and enthusiast since 1986.

It was a full sweep for Canadian Limousin genetics in the North American segment of the Champion of the World competition, where breeder submitted photos of the best Limousin genetics from each country are adjudicated by a panel of judges from around the world. Judging this year’s competition was Ivan Dario Cely Escobar of Colombia, Glen Waldron of Australia, Jonathan Watson of England and Mitch Thomas of the United States of America.

5 RPY Paynes Hitman 67J owned by Payne Livestock and Brandon and Samantha Nemetz claimed the title of 2022 Limousin – Champion of North America over GZ Gaston G383 (Mexico – silver) and SVL Premier 923J (USA - bronze). Hitman went on to receive Silver in the Limousin – Champion of the World competition. Xourel Italia 1638 from South Africa claimed Gold, Pabo Procters from Scotland was awarded bronze in the competition.

6 Pinch Hill Fantasy 824F owned by Pinch Hill Limousin and Allen and Mary-Lou Colwell received the honours of 2022 Limousin – Miss North America over Boss Lake Ms Molly 812F ET (USA –silver), and JEAL Givenchy Fiv (Mexico – bronze). Fantasy ultimately won bronze in the Limousin – Miss World competition for 2022. Gold went to Progress Queen of Hearts Q8 of Australia and silver was awarded to Glenford Royalty of Ireland.

3 Amanda Hamilton-Seward of Amaglen Limousin, Darlingford, Man. was recognized by 4-H Canada and the Manitoba 4-H Council as Manitoba’s Provincial Volunteer Leader of the Year. Amanda is a leader with the Windygates 4-H Beef Club.

Happy New Year from beautiful British Columbia. New years bring new beginnings, new goals, and new babies! It can be a very exciting time of year, but also very stressful, especially when the weather is unreasonably cold. We have survived our first cold snap here in BC and luckily most operations hadn’t started calving yet during that.

Limousin happenings in BC have been fairly quiet for the last few months, but will ramp up as bull sale season approaches. The province doesn’t have many producers that offer breeding age bulls for sale, but the few who do offer quality, sound, quiet, and functional bulls who are ready to work in every operation. The only bulls offered at public auction in BC will be at the Continental Connection Bull Sale April 7, 2023 in Quesnel, BC. However, there will be many other Limousin bulls for sale privately from breeders across the province including the south Cariboo and Peace Country regions. If you are looking for your next ranch ready Limousin bull, be sure to look up a BC breeder!

Upcoming in May of 2023 is the Canadian Auction Market Association Auctioneers National Championship at Olds Auction Market in Olds, Alta. With the CLA offering one of the Championship buckles in rotation with the other leading beef breeds in the nation, it is an opportunity to showcase to the auction industry the Limousin breed. Part of the contest is the sale of feeders, cull cows and charity items. This event has traditionally seen some of the highest market returns for the year, so consider offering a consignment of any of the auction categories to enhance our breed’s presence at this industry leading event. Happy New Year and Greetings from a frosty and snow ladened Saskatchewan! Most areas of the province have received their fair share of snow so far but the forecast is looking for seasonal weather for the rest of January as many producers start the calving season.

The annual Canadian Western Agribition Limousin Show ran smoothly with approximately 60 head entered. Special thanks to our members who helped in any way to make the show happen. We can’t do it without YOU! The SLA hosted the first online “Solid Gold” sale at CWA, which went very well. Special thanks to MC Marketing Management for all their hard work and dedication both in Canada and the US. Hello fellow Limousin breeders. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years. It seems the calf market is holding steady and rumbling that the fertilizer market is softening which is good for producers.

There was a good turnout of cattle at Ag Ex. Roughly 430 head came out but there was no Limousin show. Agribition had a really good turn out of Limousin cattle and the quality was excellent also. Big congratulations goes to Payne Livestock on Grand Champion Bull, co-owned with Brandon and Samantha Nemetz and also to Highland Stock Farms with Grand Champion Female.

The MLA held their annual general meeting in Brandon on January 7. The board would like to thank Jay-Dean Smyth for many years of service with the Association. Our new board for 2023 is as follows:

Happy New Year from the Ontario Limousin Association! 2022 was a great year as breeders in Ontario experienced much more of a return to normal with many of our events taking place again after a year or two. We wrapped up the year with shows and sales by promoting the Limousin breed to the public and offering some of the very best genetics to purebred and commercial herds. We expect that the momentum will roll into 2023.

In 2023, Ontario will be hosting the CJLA Impact Show and many events and activities for Limousin enthusiasts from across the country to participate in. The events will begin August 2, in Spencerville, Ont., and will wrap up on August 5, 2023. The Ontario Limousin Association will be hosting their AGM on Sunday, August 6 with a brunch and meeting to wrap up the week. More details will be coming out soon, but please mark it on your calendars and plan to attend.

With bull sale season around the corner, be sure to check out some of

Finally, to wrap up 2022, each year the Ontario Limousin Association recognizes one commercial cattle operation with the Angus Campbell Memorial Award. The Angus Campbell Memorial Award is presented to a Commercial Producer who uses and promotes the Limousin breed in their business. This year's recipients are Josh and Emma Butler of Riverside Hill Farm Ltd. and J & E Meats from Croton, Ontario.

The Butlers run a farm to table meat business selling beef, lamb, and chicken, all produced on their farm. The use of Limousin bulls is a staple to their beef products and they actively promote the breed to their customers and visitors at the farm. The OJLA had an awesome 2022, and we are looking forward to an even better 2023!

The highlights of 2022 for the OJLA include:

ɐ Three OJLA members competing at the 2022 CJLA Impact Show in Olds, Alta. in July

ɐ In July, we held our first in person AGM since 2020 where we elected and welcomed our new executive. We also held a junior show in conjunction with the AGM.

ɐ We hosted our annual junior shows at Barrie Fair at the Central Ontario Limousin Showcase in August, at the provincial show at Markham Fair in October and finishing off the year at the 100th anniversary Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in November.

ɐ We wrapped up 2022 with a 50/50 fundraising raffle at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and we would like to send our thanks and appreciation to everyone who supported us and bought tickets. With your support, the OJLA is able

to provide more opportunities for our juniors. We would also like to thank the judges, committees and coordinators of the shows we got to participate in, as well as our junior advisors, Mary-Lynn Lawrence, Matthew Zwambag, and Nolan McLarty.

We are very excited to finally be hosting the 2023 CJLA Impact Show in Spencerville, Ont., August 2-5! We hope you are excited too! CANADIAN CATTLEMEN'S ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Last year ended on a very difficult note. The Canadian cattle community lost a tremendous leader, mentor, and friend, with the sudden passing of Reg Schellenberg, President of the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA).

Reg’s leadership and passion for our industry will be missed around the board table and at industry meetings and events. He cared about issues and worked hard for the betterment of our industry. His goal was to leave a vibrant industry for the generations to come. His legacy and contributions will be felt for many years.

I chatted daily with Reg about CCA priorities and life on our home operations. I learned a lot from Reg and his gentle demeanor and strong character are qualities that I looked up to. I never imagined that this is how I would become CCA President. But I share the same passion as Reg for our cattle industry and it is an honour for me to lead an organization with such a strong and rich history. It’s important to me and our entire board that we move forward on the important work that CCA undertakes on behalf of cattle producers across Canada. We will be a strong voice on the issues that matter the most. Our board members and staff are committed to making positive things happen for our industry.

As we move into 2023, there are bright spots for our industry. We are experiencing high calf prices and we have a strong trade position with exports of Canadian beef at record levels for the sixth year in a row. The challenge now is having enough beef to meet the demand. Simply put: the world needs more Canadian beef.

Last November saw the announcement of the Indo-Pacific Strategy, which is good news for the Canadian beef industry. It prioritizes trade and agriculture, and includes key recommendations shared by CCA. The investment in Minister-led trade missions will help facilitate longterm trade and investment opportunities, while the opening of an agricultural office in the region will help prevent and resolve non-tariff barriers proactively and quickly.

The Indo-Pacific region holds the greatest potential for market growth and diversification for our industry, with a growing middle class, GDP,

and food consumption. About 20 per cent of Canada’s beef exports are destined for the Indo-Pacific market, with the top five markets being Japan, Mainland China, South Korea, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. Diversifying our trade supports the future of our producers. CCA continues to collaborate with the Government in seeking new market opportunities for Canadian beef in the Indo-Pacific region.

The release of the next federal budget is around the corner and with the Winter Session of Parliament set to resume on January 30, 2023, CCA will keep up advocacy efforts on our key budget recommendations which will help ensure growth and innovation in our sector.

These recommendations include:

FOOT AND MOUTH VACCINE BANK

For the livestock sector, the threat of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is serious and would have devastating consequences on the Canadian beef industry and our economy. FMD is a highly contagious viral infection of cloven-hoofed animals including cattle, pigs, and sheep. Canada remains FMD-free, but as an industry we cannot be complacent.

An investment by the Government of Canada in a Canadian FMD vaccine bank is a critical component in preventing catastrophic losses to the sector and the broader Canadian economy should FMD occur in our country. The projected annual cost to maintain the vaccine bank is $3.2-4 million including potency and licensing testing. The potential impact of an FMD outbreak in Canada is estimated at $50 to $60 billion. Together, with our provincial counterparts across the country, we continue to call on the federal government to invest in this critical infrastructure.

ECONOMIC RESILIENCE

With cattle farmers and ranchers facing market driven risks and uncertainty due to extreme weather, tools are needed to help mitigate these risks. We have recommended two actions with significant potential to help foster economic resilience in our sector: providing funding to Livestock Price Insurance (LPI) and making amendments to Livestock Tax Deferral (LTD) provision under the Income Tax Act.

LPI allows cattle producers to reduce market downside for their cattle; helping manage uncertainty and risk. This is especially important for our young cattle producers who don’t have equity built up to access loans. With lending institutions recognizing this program, it puts young people in a better position to borrow the money they need to maintain and grow their operations. The program can also be enhanced through Government partnership on the cost sharing of premiums. This would result in higher enrollment levels and would establish program equity with other commodities and our American counterparts. Lastly, we are still pushing to have this program be available to more producers across Canada.

We have also seen our fair share of extreme weather in the last number of years. Having the ability to access the LTD provision gives producers in designated regions who sell part of their breeding herd due to extreme weather the ability to defer a portion of those proceeds to the following year. To increase the impact of the provision, CCA recommends that producers be given the ability to self-elect rather than rely on a geographic determination to access this provision. This would help producers making difficult decisions during urgent times of need. Lastly, we are requesting an amendment to the definition of “breeding animals,” cited in the Act, so it includes all classes of cattle and not just the breeding herd.

As half the genetic value of your herd, bulls are definitely worth looking after. By investing in superior bulls, the growth and value of your subsequent calf crop should improve. There are various steps and management procedures which will give your bulls more longevity and make them more productive. If you can get more years and/or more cows bred from these top genetic bulls it will benefit you greatly.

In the breeding season stocking density or the bull to cow ratio will vary greatly depending on numerous factors. The younger yearlings need to be run with 15 or so cows to make sure they are capable. This won’t burn them out but allows them to grow so they can be used much heavier as two year olds. Then depending on terrain, size and quality of pasture, ability of the bull to walk and whether some cows were A.I.ed previously these sorts of factors will determine handling capacity of your bull. Every bull must be evaluated yearly for his probable serving capacity. The results of the semen evaluation and scrotal size will also provide valuable information to help make your decision. It has been said if a cow is serviced by two bulls you are running too many bulls or too few cows. The two bulls serving the cows means they are in close proximity and the worry is fighting and injuring each other. Bulls are especially vulnerable to damaging their penis when mounting and breeding cows.

In my opinion with multiple sire groups using bulls of as varied ages as possible will keep fighting to a minimum and the young yearling bulls will start by breeding cows on the periphery of the herd. The huge size difference between yearlings, two year olds and mature bulls generally keeps fighting to a minimum as the pecking order is quite obvious. Multiple sire herds have the advantage if one bull goes down for any reason the others can pull up the slack. The disadvantage is if the dominant bull has poor semen he may prevent the others from breeding and conception rate is hindered. The opposite side of this is the single sire herds, which many purebred breeders use. If that bull develops a problem such as a cut penis or his testicles degenerate and it goes undetected for any length of time the resulting open cow percentage

can be very high. I know of several cases where bulls had scarred down penises from previous cuts and were not semen tested prior to breeding season and the result was a 100% open rate. These outcomes we all want to avoid. For cleanup even purebred herds can run bulls together and then parentage test the offspring to determine the exact sire for registration. These days with DNA testing that is a very easy thing to do.

A bit of a misnomer that circulates about breeding bulls is that treatment with antibiotics damages the sperm. It really is the severity of the ailment coupled with an increased temperature which damages sperm. The quicker you treat an ailment and keep a fever from developing the better. Ancillary products like steroids have been proven to be detrimental especially in long-term use so avoid these if possible and any drastic treatment should be overseen by your herd veterinarian.

When checking bulls at pasture they should always be with the cows otherwise something is wrong. Always look at the prepuce area for signs of swelling which indicates a problem. Any lameness however subtle can hinder a bull’s breeding performance. Be especially vigilant of the feet and legs before breeding season and have any trimming work done. Some clinics recommend footrot vaccination for the breeding bulls. Any lameness you can avoid by these two preventative measures will go a long way to avoiding down time during the breeding season. A lame bull

in the middle of breeding season does you no good. The three biggest causes of breeding days missed is injury from fighting, penile injuries and lameness – not necessarily in that order.

Managing the bulls during the “off season” also deserves some attention. The bigger the expanse to house bulls when not breeding the better. More room promotes less fighting and more exercise, keeping bulls fitter and their feet healthier. If away from cows they will be quieter and fight less. A good forage diet should be all bulls need at 2% body weight daily. There is a tendency to provide grain which in many instances

gets bulls too fat. If too fat they are not fit, lack any stamina and the fat in the scrotum insulate the testicles resulting in poor temperature regulation and poor quality sperm. This results in damaged sperm. With over fat bulls they need to lose weight before getting fit to breed. This is why many show champions are poor breeders early on in the breeding season. Wherever bulls are overwintered make sure they do have some areas of protection from wind chills such as bush or even a portable porosity fence. We always see some evidence of wind-chill in the spring with herd sires having badly frozen testicles. This can result in permanent sterility in some cases. It is worthwhile protecting your investment. Standard mineral supplementation is required as bulls need, for instance, Vitamin A for optimal semen production.

As mentioned in other articles give all the same shots to bulls as you do to the cow herd with the exception of scours vaccinations. An ideal time is at semen checking when the bull is restrained and this is just prior to the breeding season when protection must be maximum. Minimally get the clostridial coverage, as these groups of diseases are sometimes not thought about in our bulls. Many a good herd sire has succumbed to clostridial disease when protection is cheap and vaccines can easily be given at semen checking. A pour on endectocide for internal and external parasites should be mandatory. Bulls will always have a higher proportion of horn and face flies so treatment at turnout for breeding with a product like boss, sabre or cylence is probably a good idea as well. When purchasing breeding bulls check into the health program they are on as tests for a BVD carrier if vaccination history is sketchy may be advisable and if hardware disease is a problem on your farm a rumen magnet may be indicated.

Start with virgin bulls from purebred breeders. Work with these breeders to discuss any things that crop up and learn their bull management strategies from them. They are in the business of raising bulls and keeping them healthy and productive. Purebred bulls greatly improve your genetic gain and avoids bringing in venereal diseases like trichomoniasis or vibriosis. Select functional bulls with adequate testicle development, good feet and legs, and decent performance. The herd bull is the quickest way to improve your herd genetics. It is an investment absolutely worth looking after.

IMPACTS ON REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH & HERD EFFICIENCY

Mineral nutrition plays an important role in optimizing reproductive health and efficiency within any cow-calf herd but can often get overlooked when troubleshooting on-farm issues. Minerals like copper, cobalt, manganese, selenium, and zinc are referred to as trace or micro minerals and are key components of hormones and enzymes. As a result, these trace minerals play integral roles in many metabolic and reproductive processes within the body.

Research has shown that copper (Cu) deficiency can have detrimental effects on female fertility, including lower first-service conception rates, reduced embryonic survival, and poor overall pregnancy rates. On the bull side of things, a copper deficiency can lead to issues with semen quality. Manganese (Mn) also plays an important role in reproduction and research shows that manganese deficiencies can delay estrus in postpartum cows and prepubertal heifers. There is also a significant body of evidence that suggests a manganese deficiency can lead to abortions. Selenium (Se) is also a vital mineral when it comes to reproduction and research shows that a selenium deficiency can increase the incidence of early embryonic death, retained placentas, cystic ovaries, and weak heats. The importance of zinc (Zn) in terms of reproductive health is most highlighted on the bull side with zinc deficiencies primarily affecting spermatozoa formation.

With the previous information in mind, it is clear that trace mineral nutrition is imperative for proper reproductive functioning. When searching for the right mineral program, there are a few things to keep in mind. Most importantly, not all minerals are the same. Mineral source is a big one to pay attention to, and often source will determine

the level (i.e., feeding rate) required. In terms of mineral source, there are two different types: inorganic and organic (chelated). Inorganic minerals are usually salts that are bound to an inorganic molecule such as sulfate or oxide, while organic minerals are bound to proteins and organic acids. The bioavailability of inorganic minerals is low because they are usually unstable as they move through the gastrointestinal tract and tend to dissociate before making it to the small intestine. Therefore, when inorganic mineral sources are used, higher feeding rates are needed to meet requirements. Organic minerals, on the other hand, are readily absorbed and utilized by the animal, and therefore lower feeding rates are needed to meet requirements. Additionally, organic trace minerals are protected against antagonist mineral interactions because they are bound to amino acids and peptides. This increases their overall stability and allows them to reach the small intestine unaltered and ready for absorption.

Decades of research and on-farm implementation of organic mineral programs like Blueprint® has shown that proper mineral management pays! Research has shown that when inorganic trace minerals are replaced with organic trace minerals, significant improvements in pregnancy rates and weaning weights are achieved. A commercial cow/calf study conducted in 2019 showed that the replacement of inorganic trace minerals with Blueprint® organic trace minerals resulted in a 7.7% improvement in pregnancy rate and an 11 lb improvement in weaning weight.

Follicular development and in vitro embryo production have also been investigated in response to organic mineral supplementation. Researchers showed that Blueprint® organic trace minerals increased

the diameter of ovulatory follicles and improved in vitro maturation and embryo cleavage. Gene expression work has shown that the benefits of organic mineral supplementation can be quantified right down to the gene level. Work that looked at endometrial gene expression patterns found that Blueprint® organic trace minerals upregulated important genes that regulate and improve the estrous cycle, leading to shorter calving intervals and improved implantation rates. Other research on the bull side of things has shown that organic mineral supplementation can lead to improvements in sperm count and quality.

Aside from the reproductive benefits from good mineral nutrition, there is also an environmental argument for the switch from inorganic trace minerals to organic trace minerals. The basis for this argument goes back to the increased bioavailability of organic minerals compared to inorganic minerals, resulting in less unnecessary mineral excretion. Research has shown that full replacement of inorganic trace minerals with lower levels of Blueprint® organic trace minerals significantly reduced fecal trace mineral concentrations. This has important implications for reducing the environmental impact from overfeeding minerals and reinforces the idea that greater concern should be placed on mineral bioavailability rather than total mineral supply.

All breeds do not need the same scrotal size, which means you can’t compare Limousin with other breeds because scrotal size will be different, and Limousin will need less scrotal size than other breeds to do the job.

Scrotal circumference is a trait which is moderately to highly heritable. Research indicates that testicle size is an excellent indicator of age at puberty of a sire's daughters and is also related to seminal quality and quantity.

Emily Conlin grew up on a beef farm in southwestern Ontario. She attended the University of Guelph where she completed her bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Sciences, and then her master’s degree in Animal Biosciences. During her master’s degree, Emily's research focused on beef nutrition and feed additives for methane reduction. Emily currently lives in Lucan, Ontario and works for Masterfeeds as a Ruminant Nutritionist.

ROY LEWIS, DVM

Dr. Roy Lewis has been a large animal veterinary practitioner for over 30 years with a cattle practice in Westlock, Alberta. His interests were herd health and bovine reproduction. Since Spring 2020 he has been doing consulting work in the veterinary field.

NO CELL PHONE PHOTOS

Cell phone photos will not be accepted, as their poor optical quality, bad light sensitivity, and wide angle lenses generate blurry, noisy or distorted photos that do not accurately represent your cattle. Cell phone cameras do not capture a sufficient number of pixels (enough image data) to use that photo in print.

HOW DOES IMAGE RESOLUTION WORK?

Digital images are composed of individual dots of stored data, called pixels. Your computer screen or cell phone can display 72 pixels per inch (called display resolution). 300 pixels per inch is the minimum size required by a printing press to produce clear, crisp images (called print resolution). The more pixels an image has, the more detailed it is.

Each blue dot at left is a pixel. The dark blue square represents the largest a 1 inch² picture at display resolution could be printed on a printing press and remain crisp.

Images taken at a low resolution (eg. Taken by a cell phone camera) or images that have been downsized cannot be enlarged again and remain crisp. When they are enlarged, the computer ‘makes up’ the missing or deleted pixels, resulting in blurry or ‘pixelated’ images.
