2 CORINTHIANS 7.4-16

I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.

For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn conflicts on the outside, fears within. But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because

your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. So even though I wrote to you, it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. By all this we are encouraged.

In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. I had boasted to him about you, and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well. And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling. I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.

MARK 7.31-37

Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. h There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.

After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spits and touched the man’s tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deafhearand themute speak.”

FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE HOLY MOTHER-OF-GOD

On September 8th, all traditional churches celebrate the birth of St. Mary. The birth of the Holy Mother of God in not described in the Holy Bible. We learn about it from the Holy Tradition of the Church. Her parents, Joachim and Anna, were a devout couple, who constantly prayed for a child. They vowed that if a child were born to them, they would dedicate him or her to the service of God.Their earnest prayers for a child were answered with the birth of a daughter Mary. Joachim and Hannah did not forget their promise. When Mary was three years old, her parents took her to the temple where she was dedicated. Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist was the high priest of that temple. Tradition tells us that she stayed there in the care of devoted women until she was betrothed at about the age of fourteen.

EVE OF THE FAST OF THE CROSS

Next Sunday, September 15th is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and our church tradition calls for a week of fasting, along with prayer and scripture study – all intended to help the faithful spiritually prepare themselves for the upcoming feast. Therefore, this Sunday September 8this the Eve (Paregentan) of the fast of the Holy Cross. The fast starts on Monday and lasts till Friday. The Saturday September 14th is Navagadig. Navagadig is a mild fasting day during which the faithful are allowed to eat fish and dairy products. Even though a number of fasts are concluded with Navagadig, on the Saturday prior to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Navagadig is celebrated as a Feast.

We depict the sign of the Cross in our churches, on our walls and doors, on our faces and in our minds, because it is the sign of our salvation and the humility of our Lord.

REMEMBERANCE DAY OF 318 FATHERS OF NICEAN COUNCIL

In the early years of the Christian Church several misleading ideologies emerged that potentially led to divisions and disagrements within the Church. One of these ideologies that started spreading in IV century was the controversial view of Arius of Alexandria over the divine nature of the Son of God. According to Arius, Jesus Christ is not of the same essence as God the Father and he was created by Father. This view of Arius began to spread and disputes and opposition within the church escalated.

To settle these arising disputes, in 325 the Emperor Constantine called an Universal Assembly in the city of Nicea with the participation of 318 bishops representing all churches. The King of Armenia Terdat and St. Gregory the Illuminator were also invited to participate in this Council.

St. Gregory and King Terdat were not able to attend, and instead St. Gregory’s son Aristakes was sent as the representative of the Armenian church at the Council of Nicea. The Council condemned teachings of Arius declaring them as heretical and expelled him from Church. This Council also realized the importance of formulating the doctrine of the true Orthodox belief which became the "Nicean Creed" or "Havadamk" as well as twenty regulatory rules for church life known as canons. Aristakes brought the ‘Nicean Creed’ and the regulatory canons to Armenia. St Gregory the Illuminator invited an Episcopal Assembly, which adopted the ‘Havadamk’ and the regulatory canons and they served as the foundation of the faith for the Armenian Orthodox Church.
