THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
The Brampton Batman on keeping the city safe ALYSSA MAHADEO/TORONTO CARIBBEAN Standing at a towering six feet tall, dressed in a battered black cape and cowl, he spoke in a low baritone straightforward and sure. His gaze was penetrating and intimidating, yet his aura humble and pure. For many years The Dark Knight, also known as the Brampton Batman has patrolled the streets of Brampton, looking for new ways to invest in the city’s growth and development. Although he has worked hard over the years to maintain his low profile, The Brampton Batman has come out from the shadows, making his presence known and available here in the city of Brampton. “There is no job itinerary, that’s just who I am.” He states unwavering.
The bat is nocturnal patrolling the city nightly, walking for hours in any kind of weather conditions. When he is out during the day he attends different events in and around the city where he is invited drawing a crowd, and many curious inquisitions. He comes out for everyone, not just children, and asks for nothing in return. His only undertaking is to do good and make sure that everyone stays safe. As a friend to the Peel Police easily recognized by his attire, The Dark Knight has gained a lot of popularity as the caped crusader, even gaining the approval of mayor Linda Jefferies who says that she likes having superheroes in her city. It became harder for him to keep
a low profile, after acquiring his very own Bat Mobile that is anything but inconspicuous. Batman says that he is a respectful law abiding citizen and when he sees flashing lights in his rear view mirror, “You just stop.” Alongside the fight for truth and justice, The Dark Knight aims to bring awareness to another matter; promoting diversity in the city. As a man with Jamaican, Canadian and British backgrounds, he is usually a victim of carding and racial profiling. He says that there has been many a time where he has found himself in a sticky situation because of his appearance, and the man underneath the cowl. Continued On Page 3

Audrey Parker; Educator and Advisor to Success Audrey Parker, is a passionate and well educated graduate from York University with a BA in English and Sociology, and a BE from The University of Toronto. She is a strong believer in investing in professional development and has become a specialist in Guidance & Career Education, as well as English as a Second language. For the past fifteen years she has worked as an educator, encouraging students to chart their course toward post-secondary institutions and apprenticeship programs. The importance of an undergraduate degree is that it builds the foundation for your potential career path and instills a sense of direction for the future. For the last ten years she served as a guidance counselor providing advice to students on the journey to success. “At the core of my educational philosophy is the belief that education is the key to student success.” As a lifelong learner, she believes that educators need to develop creative and critical pedagogy that will lead to dynamic classrooms. Her goal in life is to empower students to be independent thinkers, develop a strong sense of self, and become global citizens. During her childhood she was encouraged to work hard, seek higher education and serve others. Throughout her life, she has modeled these principals implementing them in her own journey to promote success. She owes her strong work ethic and will to serve to her mother who is the personification of
strength and courage. Audrey’s mother instilled in her the idea that you must work hard for the things you want and you must be kind to others, no matter of their circumstance. Audrey lives her life constantly engaged in some degree of introspection. “When we look inward at our true self, it allows us to be the best that we can be,” she reflects. “I am at my best when I am helping students to plan their future career goals and ensuring that these students are leading a happy, healthy and productive life.” Putting herself in their shoes, Audrey is mindful of the struggles faced by the students she teaches. She makes herself available to them, offering advice or an ear to listen and the students are appreciative of the help and guidance they receive. One of Audrey’s passions in life is to give back to her school and community. She founded the H. Franklyn Parker Scholarship Awards in 2013 to assist students to further their education at post secondary institutions. The scholarship was named after her father who passed away many years ago. “To me, there is nothing greater than seeing the smile on a youngster’s face as they walk towards a podium to accept an award that acknowledges their many achievements.” Audrey is also very passionate about raising awareness to help those struggling with mental health issues. “It is vital that we as a society move the mental health agenda forward by promoting awareness, wellness and literacy

Bramptonʼs Dark Knight Alyssa Mahadeo TC Reporter Continued From Page 1 -- After living in the city for so many years Batman puts emphasis on being accepted, and loved and knowing your surroundings, understanding the community and getting involved. He is not alone in his conquest; there are other superheroes that roam the streets of Brampton, sometime patrolling with him, in their very own Brampton Justice League. His latest mission within the city is to help promote local businesses in Brampton. The initiative that he calls
SERIOUS, is geared toward the citizens and businesses in Brampton taking a selfie scavenger hunt in a superhero shirt of their choice at any of the participating businesses in Brampton. Contenders must take at least six selfies with any of the businesses taking part in the awareness initiative. On Saturday July 18th Batman and the rest of the Superheroes will meet at Queen and Main Street, by The Rose Theatre with those dressed to impress in the best costume. They invite the public to come out meet them and even go on a patrol. On the evening of July 18th, Brampton’s L.E.D. screen will be showing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and it is also a possibility, they might show a documentary on Brampton’s Batman. Pickersgill to give update on plans to fight drought JAMAICA -- Water Minister Robert Pickersgill is expected to update Parliament today on the impact of the worrying drought conditions now affecting the island, and what his ministry and its agencies are doing to mitigate the dry spell. The National Water Commission (NWC) has reported a significant fall in water levels at the Mona reservoir and the Hermitage dam, which supply the Corporate Area. On the weekend, NWC Communications Manager Charles Buchanan said Hermitage was at 45 per cent of capacity, while Mona was at 34 per cent. Earlier this month, Buchanan noted the absence of the usual “May rains”, pointing out that by this time of year the dam and reservoir would have been full. “We have seen some of the projections of rainfall, but unfortunately it hasn’t happened in the areas that need it most. The Met (meteorological) Office has been indicating that for May,
through to the next six months or so, Jamaica should receive normal or near normal levels of rainfall. But while that may have occurred in some parishes, it has not occurred in all parts of the country, and of greatest concern are the areas that were already suffering from drought conditions or below normal rainfall,” he said. The severe drought of 2014, which fed bush fires, hampered school and hospital operations, and severely affected the agricultural sector in many areas, is still fresh in the memory of Jamaicans. At the time Pickersgill warned Jamaicans to brace themselves for worsening dry conditions and severe water restrictions. He said also, that this was exacerbated by hot and windy conditions, which are like the weather conditions the country has been experiencing in recent weeks. - Trinidad Guardian

AG, US Embassy, Foreign Affairs respond Warner extradition papers yet to arrive TRINIDAD -- The United States Department of Justice has not yet sent any final requests to the T&T authorities on the Jack Warner extradition request, the US Embassy in T&T stated Monday. The Public Affairs division of the US Embassy in T&T made the situation clear Monday following an Express story that incorrectly claimed the US had sent the request via a “package” to Government’s Foreign Affairs Ministry on the Sunday. Former Fifa jefe Warner - and 13 other Fifa officials - were indicted last month by the US Justice Department on charges including alleged money laundering, racketeering and wire fraud charges. He is also listed on Interpol’s watchlist in the event he tries to leave the country. The newspaper claimed “official documentation had been delivered to the Ministry and “sources” said that around midday Sunday the package was dropped off via courier and would “be sent to Central Authority head Netram Kowlessar” Monday. However, Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Dookeran Monday confirmed that his Ministry had not received any “package” from the US. “Nothing was sent to us,” he said. Contacted by the Guardian on the issue, the US Embassy shortly after issued a statement saying no final request had been made in the matter and the US is still within the 60-day window specified by the (Mutual Assistance) treaty (between the US and T&T) for the final request to be delivered. Attorney General Garvin Nicholas also said the Central Authority of the AG’s office had informed him that no extradition request had been received from the US. Nicholas has said that Government has so far only been asked to facilitate the
provisional arrest warrant for Warner and T&T isn’t locked into any obligation with the US to deliver Warner to the US and “there is a procedure that needs to be followed.” It has been confirmed that the deadline for the 60-day period is July 27, by which date the US’ extradition request must be filed. The provisional arrest warrant for Warner was executed on May 26 and Warner, out on $2.5m bail, is due to reappear in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court again on July 9. At United National Congress’ St Helena meeting last Friday, UNC deputy leader Roodal Moonilal said Warner wasn’t fighting elections, “he’s fighting extradition, his date isn’t September 7 (general election), it’s July 27 (deadline for the US request).” There was no response from Warner on the extradition deadline Monday. Warner’s Independent Liberal Party intends to hold public meetings in Claxton Bay tonight and later on in Chaguanas. No funding for me—carolyn San Fernando West MP Carolyn SeepersadBachan says ILP’s Jack Warner never gave her money. Responding to what she said were attacks on her, she said, “if there was any funding, it was not to my knowledge and it never happened in front of me, he walked the Trainline at Embacadere with me as he did with others in other marginal seats.” “I don’t deny I know the man, I was a UNC member and part of a slate - in UNC elections - known as the Progressives and Warner, Roodal Moonilal and myself went up for deputy leader on that slate and Warner won.” - Trinidad Guardian

Regional health conference hears… Suicide appears to be a ʻcultureʼ among East Indians – in Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago GUYANA -- With a high death rate from suicide among East Indians in Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, it appears to be a culture among East Indians to escape their woes. Some 80 percent of persons who commit suicide in Guyana are East Indians. And even with a national death rate of 44.2 deaths per 100,000, the highest in the world, it is estimated that unreported suicide in Guyana is 10 percent greater than the reported number of persons who commit the harrowing act. According to Dr. Indhira Harry, in a joint presentation with Dr. Jorge Balseiro, from 2010-2012 some 667 persons killed themselves. Speaking at the Caribbean Public Health Agency’s (CARPHA) 60th Health Research Conference at the St George’s University Campus, Grenada, Dr. Singh also noted that unreported suicide attempts is believed to be about 20 percent more than reported attempts. In sister Caricom nation, Trinidad and Tobago, about 1,000 persons attempt suicide every year. The majority of persons who committed or attempted to commit suicide there are poor and single, and the act is due mainly to spousal conflict. Above Global Average Locally, at 44.2 deaths per 100,000, Guyana is way above the global average of 11.4 per 100,000 and the average rate in Latin America and the Caribbean, which stands at 6.1 per
cent per 100,000. Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) Country Representative, Dr. Williams Adu-Krow told delegates at the conference that though Guyana has the highest deaths by suicide; it has also undertaken the highest number of interventions to tackle the scourge. But while data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) supports the current and widely reported suicide rate, the Ministry of Health says Guyana is not doing that bad, reporting a lower rate at 34.7 per 100,000. Modt Susceptible Reporting on a study conducted here titled: “Profile of suicidal behaviour in Guyana: A retrospective study from 2010-2012,” Dr. Harry said from a sample of 899 cases (555 actual suicides and 344 attempts), suicide attempts were made mostly by persons between ages of 10 to 29, but troubled persons ages 12 to 18 are most susceptible. 80 Percent East Indians Those who actually commit the act are between ages 20 to 49, 80 percent of whom are East Indians, with more men than women taking their lives. However, in Trinidad and Tobago, which also has a large East Indian population and a high number of persons committing suicide, more females in that country take their lives than males. Quite incidentally, neighbouring
Suriname, which also has a high East Indian population, has the second highest suicide rate in the world, behind Guyana. Risk Factors In Guyana, Dr. Harry identified culture and to a lesser extent religion as common risk factors of suicide. Other prominent risk factors include acute emotional distress, mental disorder, impulsivity, aggressive tendencies and adolescent maladaptive disorder, and alcohol abuse. Access To Poisonous Substances Like Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, in Guyana there is easy access to pesticides and herbicides. These substances are used by the majority of persons who committed or attempted suicide. The number of Africans attempting to commit suicide is less than half the number compared to East Indians. Some 60.8 percent of persons in Guyana who attempted suicide are single, 68 percent have no descendants, 52.3 percent had family problems, while 30 percent each are Hindus and Pentecostals. From 2010-2012 some 359 persons here committed suicide by drinking poison, of which 191 were men. Notably too, some 136 hanged themselves, and of this number 115 were men. During that period, persons also committed suicide by other means, including shooting themselves, drowning and medica-
tion overdose. Depression And Anger Dr. Harry reported that depression and anger are the most common causes of suicide in Guyana, put pointed out that family discord, issues with couples and domestic violence are also factors that lead to suicide. She noted that aside from poisonous substances being easily accessible, which is the chief means utilised by persons to take their lives, the media also need to be responsible in their reporting. Dr. Harry explained that the majority of persons who committed suicide did so by following the patterns of the persons they read about or had seen committing the act. Dr. Jorge Balseiro told the conference that the suicide profile in Guyana has been well identified with a scientific evidence base. He said it is an important step in an effort to characterise who and why people die from suicide in the country, and opens future avenues for research that could be completed with a detailed psychological autopsy and toxicology investigation. To counter the prevalence of suicide, Guyana has developed a National Suicide Prevention Strategy, has been improving access to mental health, restricting access to poisonous substances, and raising awareness about suicide prevention. - Guyana Chronicle

PNP bars Haughton from representing party in local government polls JAMAICA -- The People’s National Party’s (PNP) National Executive Council (NEC) has ratified an internal decision to bar former Lucea Mayor Shernet Haughton from representing the party at the next local government elections. The ratification on Sunday follows her appearance before the party’s Integrity Commission. However, the party pointed out that Haughton’s current membership of the Hanover Parish Council is not affected by the decision, neither is her membership of the PNP. In a report tabled in the House of Representatives on March 24, Contractor General Dirk Harrison had recommended that Haughton relinquish her position as councillor for the Green Island Division of the Hanover Parish Council, following her resignation as mayor on the basis of unethical behaviour. The report said that investigations by the Office of the Contractor General (OCG) had shown that Haughton was involved in the award of more than $3.7 million worth of contracts to family members and close friends during her two years as mayor of the rural town. It called for her resignation as a councillor and forwarded its recommendations to Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn for criminal action against her. But Llewellyn advised against
criminal proceedings, stating that, although the evidence of nepotism against Haughton was overwhelming, “that by itself is not an offence known to criminal law”. The PNP executive said that its decision follows its acceptance that “there are moral principles and issues of ethical conduct which are central to the findings contained in those reports”. “The executive of the PNP contends that, as a result of the seriousness of the issues contained in the OCG Report, and notwithstanding an apology by Councillor Haughton to be made public at the next meeting of the Hanover Parish Council, she will not be eligible to contest the next local government election on a PNP ticket, but will be allowed to complete her current term as a councillor and a member of the party,” a release from the party said. The party also noted that it had no legal authority to remove Councillor Haughton as an elected representative. The NEC said that it had accepted from the onset of the release of the OCG’s report that strong disciplinary action would be taken once the matter had been reviewed in detail and the process of natural justice completed. “The banning of Mrs Haughton from the next local government election as a candidate of the party is an appropriate sanction,” it said. - Jamaica Observer

Create the experience! Even with travel Micca Vanvield Travel Specialist One of my greatest passions is to travel the world and view my destination from the eyes of a local. I have had the opportunity to travel to the beautiful land of my birth a number of times, but have very rarely had the opportunity to view my homeland from the eyes of my youth. I recently had to return home for a very unfortunate occasion, where I had to lay a very dear family member to rest. I originally dreaded the trip as I was deeply saddened by our family loss, however I looked forward to meeting new found family members and reminiscing with old ones. Here is a snapshot of how I made a decision to take the unfortunate reason for travel and turn it into an impromptu family reunion as well as an opportunity to view my homeland through the eyes of a local. My family had started arriving on the island a few days before I landed. I was filled with anticipation leading up to my trip as if I had never travelled home before. I didn’t know what to expect as this was the first time I have had to fly home for such an occasion, however I remained optimistic that it would be a great trip. Below is a list of highlights that turned this trip from a visit for a tragedy to an epic family vacation. Being able to come together with members of my family to reminisce about the days in our past. How we grew up and highlights from our lives together. We were able to fellowship over family meetings and proactively painted a picture of what our family communication should look like even though we are all now living in various parts of the
world. Due to advancements in technology, there is no longer a need to wait on a telegram or incur extensive long distance charges to communicate. With various social media outlets as well as the internet and email, touching base with your family members could just be a click away. I had the opportunity to visit the local market where we shopped for various items in preparation for our first of many “nigh nights”. This is a common practice where the family of the deceased hosts the community in a night of celebration of life. This can otherwise be known as a wake; however it can be done multiple times consecutively with a larger event the night before the actual funeral service. The family provides food, music, and rum. There is also a lot of singing, dancing, great laughs and remembering the life of the person that has recently passed away. This was an amazing experience as we were able to enjoy this event in our family home a number of times within the week before the day of the actual service. Great fellowship was once again had with family as we ate together and watched the community members have an amazing time in honor of our family member. We had an impromptu day to visit the “country” or what one would call the countryside. Many Jamaicans migrated to more urban areas like Kingston and Montego Bay, however quite a number of the population chose to stay “home”. This is just a more comfortable and more enjoyable life for them as they choose not to indulge in the “city life”. Due to this many people have the opportunity to travel and visit members of their family for a short trip out of town. We were fortunate enough to visit family members in Petersville, Westmoreland, a town with a very small population. The most amazing part about these visits is that once your family is from a particular area, that area is basically filled with your whole family. Our first stop was at
one family member’s home, where we were welcomed with warmed smiles and amazing fresh mangoes and coconuts straight from the tree. There is nothing more amazing than being able to sip on the juice and eat the jelly of fresh coconuts that was harvested just seconds ago in someone’s backyard. One of the main highlights from my trip was to a local attraction called Windsor Mineral Spring (Firewater) in St Ann’s Bay, Oho Rios. This attraction was brought to my attention as a must see by a friend, however I was forewarned that it will not be a trek that all visitors to the island would be willing to make. It is definitely your “off the beaten path” type of attraction and would be recommended to visit with a local guide. This is an attraction that boasts vey unique qualities. It is believed that this pool of water has been tested to contain over twenty four different minerals of which the main one is sulphur. Due to this, the most unique feature is that the water is literally caught on fire and you can sit and bathe in this pool as the flame burns on top of the water, as well as receive a massage by the local guides which even includes a therapeutic scrub with the natural contents of the pool. There have been many stories told that the water contains medicinal properties due to the concentration of minerals in the water. This was an enjoyable experience for my family because not only were we able to witness such an incredible phenomenon, we were able to do it while bonding as a family. Travelling for an unfortunate situation does not always have to mean that you will have a somber trip. You can make the decision to celebrate life and make the most of the time that is being spent with family. There is a lot to do and see in this beautiful world and every day is another opportunity to make the best of it. Visit www.miccavanvield.com for more highlights from my most recent trip to Jamaica.

Rocking knee high rubber boots, the Asylum Vikings get ready to hit Glastonbury Stage Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons are gearing up to show the estimated 177,000 gathered at the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset , England just how Trinidad and Tobago does it. Their inclusion in the five day music and arts festival is a first for soca, and Trinidad and Tobago. Three hours ago, Bunji, in an Instagram post told fans, “the whole venue for the event is as big as half of Arima. Soca is about to make an entry. #Glastonbury” Their performance today comes on the heels of Jamaican reggae artiste, Chronix’s performance at the festival. Fay- Ann also took to Instagram earlier to show off her Glastonbury entry band- obviously a must have for anyone partaking
in the massive event. Rain has showered down on event attendees, however the festival continues this evening and like true troopers, the Asylum Vikings have donned their rain boots, Fay Ann is Louis Vuitton of course, as they prepare to kick in with mad vibes and a soca and EDM influenced set that’ll make music lovers move, no doubt. Amid this bit of excitement there’s word today that in Trinidad, the countdown to T&T carnival 2016 has probably begun for many, this as carnival mas band, Tribe has announced its band launch date of July 18th where “The Forbidden” will be revealed. - EtceteraBuzz
Fay-Annʼs ʻRazeʼ video heavily criticised at home, but the artiste says, “Itʼs doing what was intended” One day after the FADER magazine debuted the new video for Fay-Ann Lyons’ 2015 soca hit, ‘Raze’, the masses in Trinidad and Tobago are dogging the concept, calling it a misrepresentation of the song’s words. Undoubtedly attempting to deliver to mass audiences, a video that would stray from the usual ‘carnivalesque’ theme of bikini clad revellers parading through the streets of Port-of-Spain, Lyons-Alvarez took a less travelled route but failed in the eyes of her countrymen. The response to the video on social media websites today is quite reminiscent of the response that came when Fay-Ann’s husband, Bunji Garlin released the video for the now world-recognised hit single, ‘Differentology’. Garlin’s theme of mud covered
humans rising from the earth received some pretty harsh reviews from Caribbean soca music lovers who seemed to want to see more of what their carnival festival is known to deliver. While comments have leaned more toward the negative, with many giving the new vid the thumbs down, there are others who commend the move to go against the grain. One fan remarked, “Good!, we selling music and NOTHING else! Proud of this sister!”, while another on Facebook said, “Is time we make videos for the world…congrats…” On the feedback currently making waves in Trinidad and Tobago wherever else, via social media, Lyons sent a message to us at etceterabuzz.com, saying, “The song
did what it did for carnival and that was that. The purpose of breaking into international areas is to be able to do international things. For too long people have been saying the artistes are too seasonal and they don’t know why they don’t try to broaden their scopes. My intent was to show the song as being able to fit in carnival and at the same time have an international feel (hence the mountains 4 hours outside NYC was chosen with snow), so that someone listening for the first time wouldn’t just write off the song as another carnival song with the all too familiar costumes and wine and jam in the club. Our focus is global and our mission is to continue getting the attention of the people we have been getting it from, who can help place our artistes on platforms that are different from
what we have been accustomed to. Trinidad knows my representation is home, my love is home my family is home…but my mission is international. If we expect all artistes to do the same type of videos then I am sorry but I will always disappoint,” Lyons ended. The Vi-queen as she’s been referred to is currently in the United Kingdom preparing for Friday’s Glastonbury Festival – a major stage where the duo will undoubtedly showcase the wicked potential that Soca music has for the world to experience. Public Relations manager for Lyons and Bunji, Crystal Holder told us ‘Raze’ has been doing very well in places as far as India. - EtceteraBuzz

Hindrances to self knowledge - part 4 Simone Smith A Better Tomorrow “You need to have more confidence in yourself,” is a statement that I hear often, especially in self-help seminars, or when listening to people who are doing their best to encourage others. I agree, as individuals, we need to have confidence in who we are and what we are capable of. Arguably, some may say that there are some people who walk around with a little too much confidence; this self-confidence can be misconstrued and
seen as arrogance. Now, I know you might be wondering, where am I going with this? How can being confident be a hindrance to self-knowledge? I think that this might be a great time to bring up the concept of selfreflection. To self-reflect means to think carefully about your thoughts and your behavior. To reflect on one’s self means finding a way to think about how your actions and thoughts interact with each other. It is also a deeper understanding of how these actions affect the people around you. Interestingly enough, many are unaware of how important self-reflection is. The sense of self is a collection of our experiences; these experiences develop our schemata and how we process our surroundings. If our sense of self is a collection of our experience, it is no wonder that at times we are confused, or can become stuck in a way of being.
Now, how does this tie into selfconfidence? A person’s self-reflections determines their actions. These actions are repeated day in and day out; reinforced by our family, friends and co-workers. As we gain more experience, some of these behaviors stay with us; unaware of the fact that some of these behaviors are not conducive to a productive life, we continue them. All the while, we are becoming more confident in who we are. We might have a special talent or skill that allows us to remain confident; these skills become a part of us and we grow and develop these skills, which strengthen our confidence. There is a blurred line between confidence and arrogance, and it is this line that can cause hindrance to self-knowledge. Without guided self-reflection, we can develop a sense of entitlement that can impact our ability to function effectively in the world. We may begin to feel that
we know it all, and not take in the fact that our self-awareness has been compromised. When we look in the mirror, we are amazed and gloat at the fact that we are doing so well in life, we don’t even realize that our sense of self-regarding, our abilities and traits, is not congruent with what others observe. I want readers to understand that it is okay to be confident in whom you are; it must be understood that without proper selfreflection, we might be overlooking parts of our thinking that needs to be restructured. This is why it is always good to have people around you who can provide you with objective and constructive criticism. Stay positive, stay focused and stay reflective. Understand that your confidence should come from your ability to humbly accept that you do not know everything.

Bravo not returning to Tests TRINIDAD -- All rounder Dwayne Bravo is not returning to the Test fold, at least not in short term, as talks with current coach Phil Simmons broke down. Simmons met with Bravo, Sunil Narine and Keiron Pollard recently and Bravo revealed that he would not be making himself available to return to “whites. According to Bravo: “I met with coach Simmons and at the moment I am not prepared to come back to Test cricket. The conditions are not right for a return because it is even more unfair to us than before.
“Right now we are hearing that the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) signed a new deal with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) but we as players have no knowledge as to what is the deal. However, from what is on offer, at least what we have heard is much less. You can’t want players to sacrifice and come out and play for what they are offering. At the moment there is no incentive to come out and play Test cricket. Bravo however added that he would continue to play limited overs and T20
cricket for the West Indies once selected. Simmons revealed recently that he would meet with the Indian Premier League (IPL) in an effort to find out from there whether they were still interested in playing for the West Indies at the Test level. Bravo was dropped for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year and also overlooked for the limited overs matches against South Africa that preceded the World Cup. He was also replaced as captain of the ODI team, after he led a walkout of the Indian
tour last October, over a payment structure dispute with the WICB. He was however selected on the West Indies team for the T20 series against South Africa in January and that was the last time he appeared in maroon. Since then he has been playing T20 cricket in India (the Indian Premier League IPL) and currently he is leading the T&T Red Steel in the current Hero Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament. - Trinidad Guardian

Gayleʼs fireworks stuns Zouks ST. LUCIA -- Chris Gayle’s spectacular unbeaten 90 blew away St Lucia Zouks and fired Jamaica Tallawahs to their first win of the 2015 Caribbean Premier League here Sunday. Tallawahs restricted Zouks to a paltry 118 for nine off their 20 overs and then raced to their target off a mere ten overs, to complete a convincing ten-wicket victory at the Beausejour Cricket Stadium. The left-handed Gayle was at the forefront of the triumph, imposing himself on the Zouks attack with six fours and nine sixes in an innings consuming a mere 36 deliveries. Such was his assault, he easily overshadowed opening partner Chadwick Walton who finished on a run-a-ball 25 not out with two fours and a six. Tallawahs’ victory was set up, however, by three-wicket hauls from South African seamer Rusty Theron (3-19) and Jamaican left-arm pacer Krishmar Santokie (3-24), while fast bowler Jerome Taylor took two for 17. Opener Johnson Charles continued his good form with 29 and Englishman Kevin Pietersen got 26 but no other Zouks batsman made it past 14, as the hosts lost their last seven wickets for 24 runs. Sent in, Zouks prospered as Charles and Andre Fletcher (14) put on 39 from 34 balls for the first wicket. While Charles gathered five fours off 24 deliveries, Fletcher struggled to get the ball away in a 17-ball knock that included one four. Charles departed in the sixth over, bowled by a full length one from Taylor and Fletcher followed 11 balls later, brilliantly caught onehanded by veteran New Zealander Daniel Vettori at mid-wicket in Theron’s first over. Kyle Mayers made 13 from 14 deliveries before holing out in the deep off left-arm spinner Nikita Miller at 67 for three in the 11th over. Pietersen arrived to strike a four and a six off 25 balls in adding a cautious 27 from 26 deliveries for the fourth wicket with and Ross Taylor (8), in a stand that seemed to be setting up the innings for a late charge. However, once Theron removed both in his third over, the 16th of the innings, Zouks went into decline and never recovered. Gayle then negated any lingering ideas of a Zouks comeback, with an exhilarating innings. Attacking from the outset, he launched a ferocious assault on the Zouks bowlers, racing to his half-century off just 19 balls. He signalled his intentions from the opening over which went for 12, hitting speedster Shannon Gabriel straight for four and then over mid-wicket for six. The second over, sent down by pacer Fidel Edwards, leaked 18 runs and Gayle plundered another
15 runs from the following over, as Tallawahs sped to 45 without loss. Only 14 runs came from the next two overs but Gayle opened up again in the sixth over, slamming seamer Kemar Roach for two sixes—the second of which raised his fifty. With Gayle hitting everything cleanly, it became only a matter of when Tallawahs would win, and the Jamaican star ended the run chase in style—bludgeoning three sixes and a four from off-spinner Liam Sebastien’s first over which cost 23 runs—to take his side over the line. Zouks remain second on five points after four games, one behind leaders Barbados Tridents. Tallawahs are third on two points, ahead of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots only on net run rate.

The ultimate salsa recipe (Caribbean style) my ddaughters my au ugh ghteers rs aand nd ttheir nd hheeir hei ir ffriends. rie ri ien ends ds. ds.
Chris De La Rosa Caribbean Cooking Salsa is not a “Caribbean” type dish! Really? How easily we forget the Spanish speaking Caribbean, like Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto Rico. I started making this take on salsa for my girls after I read the label of the pre-packaged stuff they were buying at the grocery stores. Called salsa, but lacked any real flavor and loaded with sodium and preservatives. You’ll notice that I’ve taken the technique we use in Trinidad and Tobago for making Tomato Choka and applied it in making this salsa.. for what I believe is the best salsa you’ll ever have/enjoy! Ask
You’ll Need: 3 Roma tomatoes 3 scallions 1 green scotch bonnet pepper 3 cloves garlic 1/2 med avocado (ripe) 1/2 green scotch bonnet pepper 1 pint cherry tomatoes 1 heaping tablespoon chopped cilantro 1/2 lemon (juice) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/3 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper I’d much prefer to use my outdoor grill to fire-roast the scallions, pepper and tomatoes, but with it being sill cold outside (long winter) and since I know many people don’t have access to open flame grilling, I thought I’d use my cast iron pan on the stove top. Simply drizzle some vegetable oil on the pan (or use a non stick pan) and have it on a

Dice the cherry tomato (raw) or you can use another couple Roma tomatoes.. I used cherry as I like the sweetness of them and add to a large bowl along with the chopped grilled scallions. Using a mortar and pestle add the charred scotch bonnet (don’t add any seeds if you’re concerned about the raw heat and do wear gloves when handling them), the sea salt and garlic. Crush to a paste. By now the tomatoes should be fully roasted. you can remove the skin or leave them for a wicked kick of roasted flavor in the finished salsa. Crush the tomatoes as well.. to a chunky paste. Add this crushed mixture to the bowl and mix well. It’s now time to bring everything together.. dice the avocado and

The goal is to have some texture from the avocado and diced tomato to balance the sort of thick sauce from the crushed roasted tomatoes. The slight kick from the scotch bonnet, the onion and garlic flavors and the roasted tomatoes will truly excite your taste buds. Not to be outdone, the herbal note from the cilantro will definitely have you and your guests wanting more.. so double up on the recipe as a precaution! Serve fresh for best results, but you can make this in advance.. store in the fridge. I notice that the odd time it does not devoured immediately by my girls, it breaks down after three days in the fridge (discolor). Instead of lemon juice, lime would give it a lovely hint of citrus as well.

Which Style of Meditation Is Best for You? The word is out: meditation is a valuable part of a healthy lifestyle. It has been scientifically proven to make peoples’ lives happier, less stressful, and even more healthy. However, meditation isn’t necessarily easy to commit to doing every day. If you’ve ever tried to jump in at random, you may have found it to be a challenge. It could be simply because you haven’t found the right meditation style that jives with your soul. The essential aspect of meditation isn’t based on how “well” you do it, what you’re wearing, or where you are. It’s about what appeals to your spirit, and since that is such a subjective thing, there is no right or wrong way to do it. The important thing is to be committed and practice every day. Enter the Here & Now Through Meditation Whether you’re looking to cultivate more authenticity, increase happiness, improve relationships, or reduce stress, all of these things are accessible to you through the practice of meditation. 7 Types of Meditation We found seven meditation styles for you to check out. If you still aren’t sure of which sounds the best, try them all out! Make note of how you feel before and after each style, and understand what works for you. Allow yourself to go with the flow. Some important questions to ask yourself when figuring out your meditation style include: Do you like to move, or does stillness work better for you? How about vocalizations? Do you want to focus on something or nothing? Your particular way into meditation
may be different than what the mainstream is doing, but getting the benefits of stress relief, reduced anger, feelings of well-being, lowered blood pressure and so on is what is important for you. Focused Meditation This is a rather general label for any kind of meditation that includes focus on some aspect of the five senses (visualizations are the most popular). For instance, you might be asked to focus on an image of a flower, a flame, or moving water. These are all ways to keep the mind gently focused so you are less likely to become distracted. You may also be asked to concentrate on the feel of something — your fingers against each other, the way your breath feels moving in and out of your body, or the alignment of your spine. Sound is another method, as you may focus on a simple sound (a gentle gong, a bell, or music) or sounds from nature. Guided Meditation This style is a focused meditation that is not self-led. Usually a teacher or instructor will take you through it during a class you attend, like in meditation for beginners. It usually includes one or more of the techniques in focused meditation. The instructor will lead you through breathing instructions and some kind of visualization, body scan, or sound, or a mantra. Spiritual Meditation In layman’s terms, this is known as prayer. You may have done it growing up, or you may practice it as part of your religion. While it isn’t the exact same thing, there are familiar elements to this style of meditation. Essentially, you dive

into a quieter, more reflective state, whether that’s at home or your place of worship. To practice spiritual meditation, you begin with the words you have heard or said yourself in your worship, but instead of stopping at the end of a prayer or song, keep sitting quietly. You can ask a question and listen for an answer. Sometimes people feel that an answer comes from outside of them through the Divine, God, or the Universe. Other people simply enumerate what they are grateful for. Use your experience of prayer to access that quiet, meditative mind space. Mantra Meditation This practice is a label for when you use a sound or a set of sounds, repetitively, to enter and stay within the meditative state, as seen in the body mantra method, for example. Against popular belief, using only silence when practicing meditation isn’t the only way to meditate. Mantras are a great focusing tool, and they have a long history within the tradition of meditation. People usually chant either quietly, whispering their words, or loudly and proudly, turning the mantras into a more rhythmic song. Again, however, there is no one way to do it. Saying your mantras in your head is perfectly fine, or in a different language, or in a simple onomatopoeia like “Ohm.” You can even make up sounds or words if you like or take them from another language; it all depends on what the sound or words mean to you personally, and whether they are a helpful way to prevent distracting thoughts. Transcendental Meditation When scientists tout the benefits of meditation, this is the type that’s most likely been studied.
It’s certainly the most popular form, with over 5 million practitioners worldwide. It’s also usually easy to find free or low-cost classes in most places. It is a little more formalized than some of the other meditation types mentioned here, but it useful for beginning or exploring meditation if you are new to it. They have an official site, which states this form of meditation as “... a simple, natural, effortless procedure practiced 20 minutes twice each day while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. It’s not a religion, philosophy, or lifestyle.” Movement Meditation This form is exactly what it sounds like; it’s the active branch of meditation. It’s a chance to move around the room, the house, a woodsy path, or the garden (or wherever) — usually in a relatively simple and relaxing way, rather than getting your heart rate up. Walking meditation, most types of yoga, gardening, and even basic housecleaning tasks can be moving meditations. This meditation type is great for people who already sit all day at work and want to move and meditate when not at a desk, and for those people who find sitting still to be a distraction from being able to meditate at all. Mindfulness Meditation This is a type of meditation that is an ongoing part of life, rather than a separate activity. It is more of a lifestyle than anything else. It’s a great way to address stress in the moment it is happening, and over time becomes more like a mental skill than a focused time set apart from the rest of your day. It can be easier to get into a mindful state of mind if one has already been practicing other forms of meditation separately. - My Yoga Online

Six ways to have a gentler detox this summer With the most gluttonous holidays behind people start to evaluate their current state of health. This is a popular time for people to reach for the “detox in a box” in the hopes that the heaviness, bloating, and generally icky feelings go away. But rather than going that route or doing something radical that could cause too much “shift” in the body, why not employ a more gentler detox that is way more enjoyable? Try these six methods and watch how much better you feel at the end! Spring water with lemon and cranberry Spring water is easily the most important factor in a proper detox. It is exceptionally hydrating, mineralizing, and full of oxygen. Drinking 8-10 glasses a day is a nice general recommendation to help flush the system of any unwanted toxins. Add the juice of 1 lemon and 1-2 ounces of pure cranberry juice to 1 liter of water, and drink 2 of these concoctions a day.
If some sweetness is required, use a reputable brand of stevia. Grounding Grounding is quite simply based on research that connection to the earth’s electrical energy promotes physical well-being. This can be achieved by touching bare skin (such as your feet and hands) to grass, sand, soil, and even concrete (provided it is not sealed or painted). Grounding can relieve many health conditions, including poor sleep, energy problems, hormonal issues, stress, inflammation, and gastrointestinal problems. It is one of the cheapest way to gently detox! Juice Juicing can help flush many of the body’s systems of toxins and provide the body with plenty of nutrients and enzymes to optimize many different functions in the body. The key to juicing for optimal health is to limit the sugar content and incorporate more vegetables than fruit.
Consider things like green apples, limes, lemons, kale, cucumber, celery, parsley, cilantro, carrot, peppermint, ginger and turmeric. This will keep the juice low in sugar, and will invigorate all of the bodily systems. Kefir When attempting to detox the digestive system and liver, it is a good idea to opt for kefir that is not from dairy. Choose coconut or water kefir instead, so the body can more easily digest the beneficial probiotics and enzymes, without the milk proteins that can exacerbate digestive distress. Kefir can have a remarkable effect on digestion and the liver, and a couple ounces a day is all one needs to typically see some benefits. Rebounding Another important part to doing a proper detox is encouraging lymphatic flow. Since it does not have its own pump, lymph needs to
be moved manually, that is, from movement of the body. The easiest low impact way to encourage lymphatic flow is rebounding. For 10-15 minutes a day, one can stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage it to remove toxins from the cells and safely out of the body. Infrared sauna Unlike traditional saunas that use air and steam, infrared saunas emit a radiant heat that is absorbed directly into the body. This makes it much more efficient in removing toxins with an estimated 80 percent water and 20 percent waste and toxin removal, as opposed to 97 percent water and 3 percent waste and toxin in a traditional steam sauna. Infrared saunas are non-invasive and can penetrate as much as three inches into the body, which helps eliminate all kinds of toxins. - Natural News
How to make bread healthy again At this point, most people understand the drawbacks of wheat and why it has to be limited or eliminated from the diet. It’s not that wheat in its pure and original form is bad in and of itself, but due to over consumption, hybridization, and a high gluten content, there is simply no other reasonable choice but to avoid it for many people. Or is there? What if bread made from whole wheat could be made healthier, to the point that it may even be tolerated by gluten sensitive individuals? There are three things to consider in making bread a healthier choice, and if one can do all of them, they just might be able to enjoy a little bread now and again with little to no side effects.
up (glyphosate) to wheat fields just prior to harvest in order to speed up maturation and create a consistent ripening process that makes harvesting more convenient. This direct dousing of poison on exposed wheat kernels has been very routine for the past 15 years. Although some try to maintain that glyphosate is not harmful, it is starting to become clear that it disrupts the proper functioning of the gut and contributes to permeability of the intestinal wall, which can express itself in a multitude of symptoms including celiac disease and other autoimmune conditions. For these reasons, any wheat product used for bread has to be organic. No exceptions.
Always go organic As with any food the focus should be on eating as clean as possible, but with wheat, it is even more important. A practice that has been very common since the early 1980s in non-organic wheat fields is the direct application of Round-
Source a truly ancient grain Modern wheat has been heavily hybridized (not to be confused with genetically modified), with the goal of increasing yields, warding off plant disease and pests, and doing better in certain weather conditions. However, as a result of this hybridization the gluten structure has
changed significantly, which has conceivably caused the rising number of people with intolerance to gluten. When a truly ancient grain is sourced, like Einkorn, there are three main differences that make it a much healthier choice, including: •
• •
Most modern wheat is a hybrid of many different grains and grasses, whereas Einkorn is recognized as among the forms of wheat that were first cultivated by humans. Einkorn has 14 chromosomes, where modern wheat has 42 chromosomes, which changes the gluten structure. Einkorn is considered more nutritious than modern wheat, due to higher protein, EFA’s, phosphorus, potassium, pyridoxine, and beta-carotene.
These three reasons alone make an ancient grain like Einkorn a much better choice than modern forms of wheat. Ferment your dough
So now one has an organic wheat flour from an ancient grain like Einkorn which removes the toxic component of wheat and lowers the gluten content. This is an incredible start, but one more process will make the bread even easier on the digestive system. This process is fermenting. Using a sourdough starter to naturally leaven the bread (which also avoids potentially harmful commercial yeasts), will further reduce the gluten content and activate food enzymes that make it much more digestible. In fact, research in Applied and Environmental Microbiology found that when wheat bread is thoroughly fermented, gluten content drops to 12 ppm - a level that is deemed “gluten free”. Although highly sensitive individuals may not be able to enjoy any type of bread, this is a perfect example of how an ordinarily poor food choice can be turned around into a much better one. - Natural News

Is Okra Good for You?: 12 Remarkable Facts Why It Is A Powerful Foods Okra is a flowering plant that is known in many parts of the world as Lady’s Finger. It has become very popular as a natural medicine as a result of its seed pods. Frequently used in Caribbean and Chinese dishes, okra is a versatile food ingredient. It can be used in soups, side dishes and as a pickle. Okra is fast becoming a popular health food. It has a number of beneficial qualities that can help improve your health. A lot of people have heard that okra is great, but they don’t really know the details. 12 Amazing Health Benefits of okra Prevents Diabetes The presence of Eugenol in Okra helps fight against diabetes. The fibre also helps stabilize blood sugar level by delaying sugar absorption from the intestines. Improves Immunity The high Vitamin C content in okro helps fight cold and cough by encouraging a healthy immune system. The Vitamin C and many essential minerals like magnesium, manganese, calcium and iron in okra also fight against harmful free radicals and therefore promote an overall healthy immune system. Prevents Constipation Okra is one of the best vegetable sources of dietary fibre essential for the digestive system. Dietary fibres in okra help prevent and relieve constipation. The soluble fibre in okra absorbs water and adds bulk to the stool thus preventing constipation. Stronger bones Okra is rich in vitamin K. Vitamin K improves calcium absorption, reduces urinary excretion of calcium, and acts as a modifier of bone matrix proteins and fight osteopo-
rosis. Visual health Okra is an excellent source for beta-carotene, xanthein, and lutein. These antioxidants seek and neutralize harmful biological waste that can disrupt cellular metabolism, increase degradation of cells in the body, and impair vision. Antioxidants can protect your eyesight from macular degeneration and cataracts. No cholesterol Okra itself contains no cholesterol and very little fat. This makes it an excellent food to replace high cho-
lesterol fatty foods, such as rich desserts and fatty meats, with. Okra also contains high amounts of pectin, which helps decrease blood cholesterol levels by interfering with bile absorption in the intestines and forcing the liver to use circulating cholesterol to make more bile. Weight Loss Okra is low in calories. A one and a half cup serving of okra contains just 18 calories. As mentioned, it is also a good source of antioxidant vitamins A and C, as well as folate. All of these factors, combined with the high
fiber content, make it a great vegetable for weight loss. Asthma Good for asthma, it contains vitamin C which is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, curtailing the development of asthma symptoms. Heal Ulcer Used for healing ulcers and to keep joints limber. It helps to neutralize acids, being very alkaline, and provides a temporary protective coating for the digestive tract. More Fiber The superior fiber found in okra helps to stabilize the blood sugar by curbing the rate at which sugar is absorbed from within the intestinal tract. Kidney Disease One study published in the October 2005 Jilin Medical Journal found that regular consumption of okra can help prevent kidney disease. In the study, “those who ate okra daily reduced clinical signs of kidney damage more than those that simply ate a diabetic diet.” This also ties in with diabetes, as nearly 50% of kidney disease cases are caused by diabetes. Healthy Skin Vitamin C helps keep the skin looking young and vibrant. The vitamin aids in the growth and repair of bodily tissues, which affects collagen formation and skin pigmentation, and helps to rejuvenate damaged skin. Okra is full of vitamin C. Topical tip: Boil a handful of okra until soft. After letting it cool, mash it, and apply it to your face. After 5 minutes, your skin should feel smooth and rejuvenated. - Natural News
Five everyday herbs for indigestion Most people think that indigestion is simply the result of eating a meal that is too heavy or too rich or spicy. But while it’s true that scarfing down a third cheeseburger and washing it down with a milkshake can really upset the stomach, overindulgence in food is not the only reason why people get indigestion. For some, it is linked to high stress levels and is a physical reaction to feelings of anxiety or worry. For others, it is a matter of wearing clothing that is too tight or restrictive. Whatever the cause, indigestion can really make people suffer, and that fact that there are so many prescription and over-thecounter drugs to treat it attests to how common this condition really is. However, there are also natural ways to help treat digestion that can soothe an upset stomach and restore the digestive system without having to resort to conventional medications. Bitter orange This is actually one of several “bitter” herbs which is thought to help the functioning of the digestive system. It can, for instance, increase the production of saliva as well as the
production of stomach acids and digestive enzymes. This increase means that digestion tends to be more efficient and that an upset stomach is less likely. Chamomile Chamomile is mostly thought of as an herb to treat insomnia or anxiety. However, its uses go far beyond just getting a good night’s sleep. Chamomile contains compounds which can help to soothe irritation along the lining of the digestive tract and reduce the inflammation that is the root cause of so much gastric pain during a flare-up. Dandelion Dandelions are often promoted as a detoxifying or cleansing agent which can improve kidney function and make it easier to remove wastes from the body. This can be useful if overindulgence has been a problem and taking this as a tea or tincture can help to increase stomach acid and make the body more efficient at breaking down food and eliminating it so that it does not cause any gastric upset.
Dill It’s not just for pickles anymore! The carminative properties of dill can help to gently relieve problems of gas and bloating in the stomach and intestines, and it is, in fact, so gentle that it can even be used on babies who are suffering from colic. Fennel Chewing fennel seeds after indulging in a rich or heavy meals has long be a popular tradition in India. That is because fennel seeds are known to be able to aid digestion, prevent flare-ups of stomach upset, and also prevent problems with gas and bloating due to its carminative properties. It can also be drunk as a tea after a heavy meal. So if indigestion is a problem, don’t despair. Try any of the herbs listed above. With regular consumption, all of these herbs have compounds and properties that can improve the digestive system and make the discomfort of indigestion a thing of the past. - Natural News

Top weight loss tips Monique Bartlett Fitness Losing weight is not easy. It takes discipline, control and a decision to get healthy. Without any of these, it becomes a losing battle. If you’ve been trying to lose weight but are feeling stuck, here are a few weight loss tips to get you started in the right way. Concentrate on eating a balanced diet Concentrate on eating healthily and exercising rather than obsessing about weight loss. If you constantly obsess about losing weight you will only be creating a space for failure. Concentrate on eating a balanced diet but also allow yourself to have a weekly splurge so you don’t splurge from feeling deprived.
Eat five to six times a day Eating smaller meals spread out more regularly throughout the day will help to keep your metabolism high. It will also keep you feeling fuller longer so you are less likely to binge eat. Starving yourself will just cause your body to slow down your metabolism and it will begin to store fat because it will think you are starving. Eat fewer calories Unless you create a calorie deficit, it will be very difficult to lose weight. You need to burn more calories than you consume. That means eating more fruits and vegetables as they contain less calories but contain more fiber to keep you fuller longer. Eat more lean protein Eating protein burns more calories at rest. Protein is harder for your body to digest so not only do you burn more calories but this also helps to increase your metabolism. Eating leaner proteins with less fat such as chicken and fish is more ideal than eating red meat.
Eat good fats Fish oils and coconut oil are two of the best fats. They help to make you feel fuller longer and can also help you lose weight. They are also important in helping to reduce any inflammation you may have. Exercise regularly If you’ve never exercised before, don’t say you’re going to exercise five days a week because you will never stick to it. Start with one or two days a week and increase your activity level from there. You must also regularly perform both cardio and resistance training. These will help to both burn fat and increase your lean muscle mass. Reduce your sugar intake Sugar causes insulin spikes and excess sugar can really add up over the course of a day. Limit the amount of sugar you add to things such as your tea and coffee. Keep baked goods to a minimum and look for hidden sugars in other foods that you eat.
Injuries to the mouth Dr. Matthew Weekes BSC DDS MTh DMin
Dental Health
Many injuries to the body involve the head. The face, jaws and their joints, teeth, and other hard and soft tissues may be subjected to mild to severe injury. Although we take preventive measures to protect ourselves and our children, especially when engaging in potentially dangerous activities, accidents happen. Sports, motor vehicles, construction work, and falls result in many of the injuries to the mouth. Children are prone to falls and al-
though most result in bruising with no significant injury, yet some sustain injury to the face, jaws and teeth with regularity. Measures to prevent and deal with injuries such as knocked out teeth, cuts and bruises to the head, have become a high priority in many schools. After a parent has been notified that their child had an accident at school involving injury to the head, the parent should try to get to the dentist as soon as possible especially if the lips are bruised and bleeding, teeth mobile, displaced, fractured, or avulsed (knocked out). Depending on the age of the child and if they can get to the dentist with the avulsed teeth, preserved in milk or distilled water, it may be possible that the teeth can be re-implanted. The restoration of the mouth following a serious accident may involve several disciplines of the Medical and Dental profession. In the case of severe trauma to the head as in a car accident, the patient may be seen at a hospital where life saving mea-
sures will be put in place and after the condition is fully stabilized then the dental team will begin the reconstruction process. Roy was our dental patient from his teenage years, and visited us occasionally for checkups and cleaning. After a three year absence he came to our office. He stated that seven months ago he was hit by a car and sustained damages to his face and leg. He was hospitalized and was in a coma for forty three days. After he recuperated, he sought our help in restoring his mouth. He lost one of his upper front teeth along with some supporting bone. Three other teeth in the front of his mouth were severely damaged. Some of his teeth had shifted affecting his bite. His treatment at our office consist of root canal therapy, restorations, orthodontic treatment (braces), a crown and a bridge. The final result was a complete restoration of his mouth displaying a beautiful smile which exceeded his expectations and restored his self-confidence.
Cholesterol Conundrum: How bad is it? Dr. Lydia Thurton ND BASc
Health Tips Few words are as linked to images of heart attacks more than “cholesterol.” Pictured by many patients as lumps of fat circulating in their blood stream, clogging arteries and wreaking havoc. This is not the case at all. Many people do not realize that elevated LDL, or lousy, bad cholesterol is a symptom of their problem. Not the actual problem itself. It’s important to know that your body uses cholesterol to patch up arteries that are damaged by inflammation. The cholesterol itself is not a problem, it is produced in re-
sponse to inflammation.
the liver.
For starters let’s understand that there are different types of cholesterol. The two major types vary in how dense they are and whether they are traveling to or from the liver. I’ll explain. Lousy cholesterol, LDL, stands for low-density lipoprotein. Low-density implies that these are big molecules that take up a lot of space. LDL particles also travel from the liver to the cells in the body dropping off cholesterol wherever it is needed. Essential service, but in too high quantities this signals your body is in a state of inflammation and needing cholesterol to repair damaged areas. Healthy cholesterol, HDL, or high density lipoprotein is the opposite of LDL. These are small dense particles that pick up excess cholesterol and ship it back to the liver where it can be packaged up and disposed of. Having high HDL means that your body does not have a large burden of inflammation it is trying to repair. Instead, it is fine to ship off excess cholesterol to have it excreted by
Instead of just measuring LDL, we really should be measuring the amount of LDL that is oxidized. Oxidation in this case essentially means damaged. This damaged cholesterol can penetrate the blood vessel lining and cause even more inflammation. This is what truly leads to cardiovascular disease. One type of LDL called Apolipoprotein B is particularly nasty and artery clogging. Your naturopathic doctor can determine if you have elevated levels of oxidized LDL or apolipoprotein B by a simple blood test. Cholesterol, as a molecule, is absolutely essential for human life. There is nothing bad about it. It is used to make hormones, help our nerve cells conduct signals and helps us absorb some vitamins. Cholesterol forms the membrane layer around cells in our body. It is like the mortar used in building a brick house. Totally essential. The real villain is inflammation. More on this topic next week.

Bars to divorce Valerie Dye Legal Matters The ground for obtaining a grant of divorce in Canada is a breakdown in marriage. This breakdown may result from either separation for at least one year or from the opposing party having committed adultery or having displayed such mental or physical cruelty to the applicant so as to make further cohabitation unbearable. Parties may be able to satisfy these requirements and still be barred from obtaining a divorce. Divorce is not an automatic right that parties are entitled to obtain. Courts may bar spouses from obtaining a divorce for various reasons. According to the Divorce Act bars to divorce include collusion between spouses, the fact that adequate arrangements have not been made to support the children of the marriage, and, if the ground of divorce is adultery or cruelty, the fact that the applicant has condoned the behaviour of the other spouse. One instance where the issue of collusion may arise is where a marriage has taken place solely for immigration purposes with the intention that the parties would seek a divorce soon after one party has obtained permanent residence status. In the 2003 case of Kaur vs Brar the parties entered into a ‘sham marriage’ for the purpose of allowing one party to migrate to Canada. The parties separated on the same day of the marriage. Upon application for divorce the court refused to grant the divorce on the basis that there was a collusion to enter into the marriage and a collusion to obtain the divorce. It should be noted that under the Divorce Act, ‘collusion’ means an agree-
ment or conspiracy between two or more persons to subvert the administration of justice. Thus where, as in the case of Naseer v Latif, the wife was unaware that the husband was marrying her only for the purpose of migrating to Canada the Court granted the divorce. Ms. Naseer was a Canadian citizen who went to Pakistan to marry Mr. Latif. She subsequently sponsored him to come to Canada and live with her in Alberta but upon arriving in Canada he stopped in Toronto and refused to join her in Calgary. In this case there was obviously no collusion as the wife herself was deceived. With regard to the second bar to divorce, the court may refuse to grant a divorce decree unless and until it is satisfied that adequate arrangements have been put in place for the payment of child support. In this case the court’s refusal to grant the divorce will be temporary until such arrangements could be made. Section 11(1) (c ) of the Divorce Act states that before granting a divorce a court must satisfy itself that there has been no condonation or connivance on the part of the spouse bringing the application for divorce. In such cases the court may dismiss the application for divorce. Condonation may occur where, for instance one spouse is seeking a divorce on the ground of adultery but the court finds that the spouse has condoned the very adultery that is being used as a ground for divorce. The Bars to divorce outlined in section 11 of the Divorce Act shows that divorce is not an absolute right to be enjoyed by parties whenever they wish. As stated by the Court in the 2002 Alberta case of Cochard v Cochard, “In Canada divorce is not a matter of consent between spouses. Even when each of the spouses wants a divorce, the court must satisfy itself that the public policy issues outlined in s. 11 of the Divorce Act have been adequately addressed”. The bottom line is that the primary purpose of the court is always to prevent a breach in the administration of justice and an abuse of the judicial system.
407ETR and the rapid progression of privatized public services Tammy Flores 407ETR Matters Regardless of whatever side of the fence you sit with respect to P3’s, most will agree that the privatization of Highway 407 in Ontario, Canada, was a mistake. Many of you that have been following the group, “Stop the 407 ETR’s Abuse of Power”, know their effort to change the 407 Act has been challenging. The public for the most part remains in the dark because there is a lot of technical talk that can make one’s eyes gloss over. Also, the public has been duped by some smooth talking politicians and over paid lobbyists into believing that nothing can be done with respects to the contract the Province signed with 407 ETR, operators of Highway 407. People often use the phrase that it is an “ironclad” contract. No contract is ever
ironclad. There is always a divorce clause and as long as we still live in a democracy, where there is the will, there is the way. I have been contacted by someone from a group from North Carolina, USA in a similar situation. Their group is called “Exit 28 Ridiculousness” on Facebook. It appears their governing authorities signed a contract with our friends that operate Highway 407. 407 ETR, A.K.A. Ferrovial, A.K.A. Cintra. The citizenry there are not asleep. They are wide awake and realize that being stuck with HOT lanes won’t be so hot, if they don’t act now and cancel the contract. The group in North Carolina has been successful in rallying local business leaders into taking a stand against the contract and momentum is growing. One thing I love about our American neighbors is they are not afraid to speak up and tell their government what is in their best interest. Canadians seem to be more passive aggressive. We love to complain and bang our fist and get all “bang-ry” about things, but we tend to shy away from taking action when we need to. We just like to express our disdain verbally, but not actually do much about it… like arm chair athletes, we don’t play the sport, but have a lot to say. Continued On Page 26

Saving money on a road trip Jelani Daniel Automotive Corner When you think of summer, you likely envision family or friends cruising alongside you on a sunny road trip to a fun destination. Road trips can be a spontaneous or planned journey, but having a strong budget is often needed to make stops along the way, pay for gas, and to provide for hotel or camp ground accommodations. If you are looking to hit the open road this summer, here are a few tips and tricks to not only save you gas, but to save you money. Using Cruise Control: Cruise control is a great feature for a long period of travelling since you maintain the speed you are going, making your RPM constant, lowering the use of gas. Cruise control can also be helpful for long stretches of road so you can relax, sit back a bit, and enjoy the view. Top Up Your Fluids: Have you ever been stuck with a dirty windshield, unable to find a gas station for miles and miles? It happens, it is dangerous, and it is an annoyance. Other fluids such as coolant, oil, and transmission fluids should be looked at prior to long drives. If you are
travelling for a number of days, ensure all fluids are topped up and you have the ‘ok’ from your mechanic. Also, keeping an extra container of windshield washer fluid in your trunk is recommended. Keep a Lower, Consistent Speed: Much like using cruise control, keeping your speed near the speed limit and keeping your RPM’s down is crucial to saving gas. Burning fuel between 100 km/h and 120 km/h shows quite a substantial difference, so driving a bit slower and at a consistent speed will save you gas. RPM’s are the best way to measure how much fuel you may burn, so find what RPM is best for your cars fuel consumption and try to stick to it for the trip. Plan Your Trip Wisely: Sometimes toll roads can be present, leaving you with a hefty bill to pay on top of your fuel consumption, so be sure to fully map out the direction you are heading. Typically GPS and Google Maps allow you to see if there are tolls present during your drive, but try other searches too, just to be safe. Plan Your Accomadations In Advance: It can be all too tempting to pull over at the nearest pit stop for a rest after a long drive, but the charges may be outside of your budget. Mapping your destination and looking for lodging along the way, as well as booking prior to arriving, can give you the best idea of what you might spend each night. Overall, road trips are fun and lively ways to connect with those you love on the open road. Taking precautions beforehand can save you time and money, letting you get back to what really matters; your experience.
Rapid progression of privatized Continued From Page 26 -- One thing’s for sure with our American neighbors, they realize this type of Privatization… this P3 arrangement … has the worst record re: money for value. It works well for the private sector but the public and the economy gets the short end of the stick. In my opinion, I think the bigger problem is with money management, rather than how you can raise funds to build needed infrastructure. According to OPSEU’s President, Warren (Smokey) Thomas, governments can borrow money far cheaper than the Private Sector. What better time to be borrowing money than now? Interest rates are dirt cheap. Paying back the loans are always a challenge if the interest rates change, but if you are letting a private corporation, profit off the backs of your citizenry, selling them a pipe dream without the pipe…letting them take without giving back to the community… you sure can manage to adjust tolls to pay back the costs of the investment if interest rates rise. I have no idea how to make talking about P3’s sexy or appealing to the masses, but the masses have to realize that these companies our governments are partnering with are multinational corporations known for questionable ethics. Transferring the government’s power to these corporations
is not only a mistake, but is illegal. In my opinion, a constitutional challenge should be made because government can’t trade their executive power for money. They can’t trade, sell or exchange their executive power as a consideration in a sales contract. Getting into bed with these multinational corporations is risky business. The public has to protect its interest and make the powers that be rethink the type of relationship they want with these multinationals. Once you let them into your bed, it’s hard to kick them out. While most have given up trying to do anything about the contract with 407 ETR, the group “Stop the 407 ETR’s Abuse of Power” remains hopeful people will start to wake up. Like our American neighbors, we have to take a stand against the rapid progress of this kind of privatization. Take a breather. Think before you act. Never make a decision because you feel pressured by some trumped up schpeel that makes you feel you are losing something if you don’t act now. We all know sleazy salesman that sell you this way. We like to think we are wise enough not to fall for those sales gimmicks. Privatizing public services are sold to us pretty much the same way. Be cautious and walk into any agreement with your eyes wide open.

Mars in Cancer revs up the action on the home and family front. Once emotions are ignited, you’re hot on it. Desire also works as a good commitment or follow-through motivator. Sunday through Canada Day dishes up a great few days to put it in vacation or play mode. Socialize, scout around, put your feelers out, join the crowds, or try your luck.
Wearing it on your sleeve—you’ll feel it and express it more visibly now. Mars in Cancer keeps wants, needs, and passion out in full force. Monday through next Thursday, Venus/Jupiter keeps it going strong in the category of “as good as it gets”. On vacation, at a special event, lavishing on family or yourself, moving to a new address—you’re into a spending-spree time.
Friday/Saturday, aim for a reboot. It’s also a good time to catch up on projects or conversations. If Sunday evening brings you to a wind-down, it’s only momentary. Monday onward, travel, visits, shopping, loving it, and/or loving them comes with a great, big happy face. Venus, Jupiter, and Uranus can deliver good news, a win, a gift, or a special reason to celebrate.
A particularly lucrative and happy-making week lies ahead. Mars, freshly into Cancer, has you refuelled and good to go. Giving you something more substantial to have and to hold, Venus, Uranus, and Jupiter are rewardgenerating. It’s a big week for a major purchase or investment, and for matters of the heart. Both are gifting transits, but they could produce nothing more than an indulgent mood and easy go of it unless you reach out to them. Wednesday’s full moon can heat up the unexpected.
Mars, newly into Cancer, can keep you more physically active and get you out there socially, too. Even so, now through mid next week is ideal for escaping it all or devoting quality time to love. Monday can be a soft start to a full-tilt week. Tuesday through Thursday, you deserve it, you own it, it’s happening.
Live it up, travel, celebrate, or keep going just as you are. Whether you have something special planned or synchronicity sets the compass, you’re in for an especially delightful and lucrative go of it. Socially, romantically, and/or money-wise, Venus, your ruler, is on a great roll through most of next week. Wednesday’s full moon can necessitate a change of plans or priorities.
A vacation or change of pace couldn’t be better timed. Whether it involves travelling a distance or parking it right where you are, now through the coming week is ideal for cutting loose and/or getting your pleasure fill. Wednesday’s full moon could pile on extras, but even so, you’ll find a way to work around it.

Planning on doing renovations? Hiring uninsured contractors is risky business Sherene Cole
CIP, CRM, CAIB, LLQP
Insurance Matters
How do you protect yourself as a homeowner or small business owner to ensure that your renovation project gets off the
ground? Part of this process hinges on the people who will actually do the work - the contractors and sub-contractors you hire. An informed customer will have fewer disappointments, so find out as much as you can about the contractor you are considering in advance. 1. Obtain appropriate license numbers and a written proposal: This should outline what work you agreed on to be done and the timeframe in which that work is to be completed.
2. Ask for and check references: Do as much homework as possible before you make the decision to hire. 3. Hire an insured contractor or subcontractor to complete the job. Make sure there is commercial liability and property damage insurance in place. 4. Inform your insurance broker or agent before starting any major renovation project: Your coverage may need to be amended during the course of the construction. Uninsured contractors may have no
way of compensating you for any property damage they cause, putting the risk squarely on your shoulders. As well, your insurance policy may not cover damages or losses that occur as a result of the actions of your contractor. Take the time to check with the insurance company named in a certificate of insurance, to verify that the contractor’s policy is still effective and will be throughout the duration of your project. The bottom line is that failing to do your homework can have financial consequences.

The magic number 168 Noel Walrond Professional Development What is the one thing you and I have in common with Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, President Barack Obama and Sir Richard Branson beyond all being human beings? We all share the number 168. Now I know, you’re probably out there reading and saying, “Noel, what are you talking about man? What is the significance of the number 168?” 168 is the number of hours there are in a week. 168 is the number of hours you have in a week. 168 is the number of hours I have in a week. No matter who you are, whether
you live under a bridge or in the biggest mansion, we all have the same number of hours in a week. That number is 168. The question I have for you is this: Are you seeing the results you want in your business or professional life, relationships, your health, or with your life in general? If you’re not seeing the results you want, chances are you’re not using your 168 hours in the most effective way. I tell my students all the time that “Your routine dictates your results”. What do you need to do in order to change how you’re using your time? You may be thinking “Noel, I don’t waste any time, what are you talking about? I am a really busy person..in fact there aren’t enough hours in the day”. My next question to you would be “how much time do you spend on Facebook and Twitter, Instagram and YouTube (Social Media), watching TV, going to social events, talking on the phone (talking about things not related to your success in the areas that matter most to you), hanging out with friends, etc. I’m speaking as a person who had a loooong history of wasting time. I used to spend way too many of my precious 168 hours watching TV, partying, and of course, checking

out social media (on items that were non-related to where I wanted to be). I was addicted to that way of living. I used to waste hours upon hours without even realizing it! Please don’t misunderstand me. We all need our “down time where we relax and may enjoy the things I just mentioned..the point I am making is that if we are not achieving what it is in our hearts…we need to get the work done first THEN we get to chillax any way we feel like it…NOT BEFORE. One of my mentors gave me an exercise to do that changed everything. He had me take out a calendar of a week. He told me to fill in the blanks in half an hour intervals from the time I woke up until the time I went to bed. Instantly I began see that I was wasting a lot of valuable time. I began to see that if my results were going to change that I would need to replace the non-productive activities with tasks that would bring me closer to achieving my desired results. That exercise changed my life! I started plugging in new activities and my results changed in a BIG way. The same has been true for my students. Some of them have remarked that they accomplished more in two months than they had the entire year previous. Don’t wait another minute! Pull out a
piece of paper or bristol board. You need to be able to see the whole week at a glance. Fill in the spaces in thirty minute intervals of a typical week in your life. After you have done this you will find one of two things to be true. Either you are wasting a lot of time…or if that is not the case, you may need to make some tough choices on tasks that may need to be cut out, or delegated so you can focus on the things that are your biggest priorities. I chose to delegate house work. I pay people to come and clean my home. I also chose to delegate my administrative tasks by hiring an assistant. These two simple changes have saved me HOURS!!! I chose to cut back on dating people who I “liked”, but really wasn’t that interested in for a potential future. I decided to record my favorite TV shows so I could watch them when I had completed my tasks. The TV shows became my “reward”. We’ve only have 168 hours, and something is going to have to give if you want to enjoy the ideal life you both want and deserve. This life is not a dress rehearsal. Even if you believe in reincarnation you are not going to come back as the person that you are. You’ve got one shot as YOU! Make the most of it. Write me and tell me how it goes… Have a POWERFUL day!
