EMILY SINGH/TORONTO CARIBBEAN

After 17 exciting years the party is finally over for good at Guvernment nightclub in Toronto. Leading up to its official closure on January 31st, 2015 the club will host some off the chart events leaving Toronto’s nightlife scene with a bang! Boasting over 22,000 square feet of party space the Guverment or more commonly referred to, as simply “Guv” by its attendees is without a doubt the hottest nightclub in Toronto. Leaving behind a sweeping legacy in the nightlife industry, CEO of INK Entertainment, the company that owns Guverment, Charles Khabouth expressed how proud he was of its success and thanks everyone who made that possible. Over its 17 years many big names such as Bob Dylan, Lady Gaga, The Rolling Stones, The Killers, Deadmau5 and world-renowned music icon Prince have graced the stage and entertained thousands. So you love the Guv? Here are three things you probably didn’t know about your fa-

vorite Toronto hotspot! 1. It is the largest nightclub in Canada! 2. In 2000 and 2001 it was voted as “The Best Dance Club” by EYE Magazine 3. Features 20 foot ceilings, equivalent to the height of a two-story building! What’s not to love about this hotspot? Eight rooms with a different DJ in each giving you the ultimate party experience! Head into Chroma, an over the top neon light paradise with over 3000 square feet of space and enjoy bottle service and great music. Looking for a scenic experience? Grab a drink and walk out onto the Skybar rooftop patio and enjoy the beautiful Toronto skyline. It doesn’t stop there! Head on up to the second floor of Guvernment and enjoy Surface nightclub, which has hosted hot events such as Love & Reggae!

The Guvernment nightclub has also attracted a dynamic West Indian fan base hosting events like Soca Is Me, and Reggae vs. Soca over the years. An upcoming event on May 17th called Bring Your Best will bring Dancehall legend Beenie Man and Soca icon Lil Rick to mash up the stage; you don’t want to miss it! Another great event you don’t want to miss is Love & Dancehall on June 27th! Other big names in the Caribbean entertainment industry that have graced the stages of Guverment have been Skinny Fabulous, Mr. Vegas and Swappi, The question lingering in everyone’s mind is why the closure? Who and what is pulling the plug on the Guvernment? The answer is simple: Condo expansion. Little is known about the extent of the expansion but one thing is for sure, the Guv will be gone. Before it closes its doors for good head on down and party it up inside Toronto’s most iconic nightclub!

A mothers day dedication Ebony Narpatty TC Reporter

Amanda,

half Jamaican, half French, is currently a model with Orange Model Management. Amanda studied international travel and is a certified travel agent. In her spare time, Amanda loves to play basketball and take part in track and feild and enjoys outdoor activities, sports, attending NBA games and concerts and aspires to one day own her own business and have a successful modeling career.

A mother is the most precious gift in the world to have, to hold, to love and to be loved by. She knows your strengths, your weaknesses, your sorrows, and your happiness. Like all mothers she is born with the instinct to always protect you and guide you. She will always encourage you to do your best and you are seen as her prize in her eyes. Some people may call her ma, mama, mommy, mom, mum, momma etc… It depends how you were brought up, under what culture, tradition and ethnicity but they all mean the same, mother. When you were a baby your first word was probably “ma.” Your mother, on the other hand, carried you in her stomach while you clung to her in a warm embrace in her belly. Yes she carried you for nine months patiently and lovingly, never complaining, always proud of your existence inside her. She nurtured you with food, spoke to you in your many stages, read to you while you were jumping and bumping in her tummy and bore the aches of carrying you and the pain when having you. Yes she is your creator along with God so I believe she deserves all the respect in the world. I wrote a poem for Mother’s day to all the mothers out there. Enjoy… My mother is the moon in its complete fullness

She is the stars that gaze upon me in the sky She is the sun that I look forward to see its brightness She is the waves in the Oceans’ high tide My mother is like the fresh breeze that surrounds me She is like the sand I walk on along the land She is like a bird that feeds her chicks their needs She is like the shade I sit down and take Her guidance towards her children is golden Her shield of protection helps her babies Her knowledge speaks in her silent moments Her existence will always be timeless Our moments with her are priceless My mother is as wonderful as can be As strong as a rock As pretty as a picture She is as brave as can be A one and only By: Ebony Narpatty Well that’s all I have to say about mothers for mother’s day. I would also like to share some advice for mothers out there… Be a good mom. Take full control of your kids and be the responsible one to teach them right from wrong, that manners maketh man and know their whereabouts. Teach your children to be polite and courteous. Remember your children are the reflection of yourselves. Who you are, your children will be. If you are a rude person your kids will be in trouble all the time beating or cursing other kids at school. Be the example. Everything starts from inside the home. Get your act together. Mother up!

Hundreds say goodbye to cricketʼs Maurice Clarke JAMAICA -- Former successful manager of the Jamaica national cricket team, Maurice Courtney Clarke was, among other things, remembered as a special man who was committed to what he put his mind to. Clarke, 59, the former president of the St Mary Cricket Association who also served as an assistant treasurer and board members of the Jamaica Cricket Association, succumbed to the rare Motor Neurone Disease at his home in Highgate, St Mary, on April 20. He had been ailing for several months. Motor Neurone Disease is among a group of neurological disorders that affect muscle activity and affects walking, speaking, movement of the body, and swallowing. The disease, which has no known cure, progressively worsens the affected persons condition and eventually leads to death. “He was a giant of a man,” custos of St Mary Jeffrey McKitty told hundreds in a packed Clermont Seventhday Adventist Church on the outskirts of Highgate, Sunday. “When the history book is written about St Mary, Maurice Clarke will be among those about whom good things will be said,” McKitty stated of the deceased justice of the peace. “Maurice was special. He always wanted Jamaica to be united and to always achieve,” said Fritz Harris, honorary secretary of the Jamaica Cricket Association. “He was a board director for 12 years, assistant treasurer for two, and

managed the Jamaica team, winning two trophies. “He was known to be reliable, punctual and committed and was never too busy to address a concern of a player or official... he was a loving soul. He was the epitomey of love and concern, easy to relate to, a confidant, friend and brother,” Harris said of the Dinthill Technical High School past student. Children Alicia and Maurice Jnr also spoke glowingly about their dad. “My dad was protective and loving of myself and Maurice,” said Alicia, an architect. “He always treated you with respect and had tolerance. Daddy respected family,” said Maurice Jnr, a former Jamaica youth team cricketer who represented, among other teams, the University of the West Indies, St Mary, and Lucas Cricket Club at the sport. Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Transport, Works and housing, Dr Morais Guy, described Clarke as one who took risks for his family and endeared himself to the community. “He was a cherished St Mary parish man. He loved people and loved seeing people progress,” declared Dr Guy, sentiments that were echoed by Port Maria Mayor Levan Freeman. “He dedicated his life to St Mary, but he was a strong family man. I want to see a competition started in his memory. I would donate the trophy, because Maurice left a legacy,” Freeman said. Clarke was buried at the Port Maria Cemetery. (Jamaica Observer)

Coronation Burns! Some vendors say they lost everything JAMAICA -- MILLIONS of dollars in goods and equipment were destroyed last night by a fire which razed more than 30 stalls at Coronation Market, West Kingston. Two firefighters were also injured as they suffered electric shock from several live power wires while they fought to put out the blaze. Police said that about 5:00 pm, vendors saw smoke coming from the Chapel Lane end of the market facility and raised an alarm. “I was in the market to carry out some work when I see the smoke and start call out fire, fire!” vendor Horace Campbell told the Jamaica Observer. Campbell made the comment while standing among a large group of vendors who gathered at the location and watched in shock and anger as firefighters fought for more than an hour to put out the blaze. Firefighters said that they received the call minutes after 5:00 pm but, despite quick action, they were not able to save several stalls. However, they said that they were able to ensure that the inferno did not spread to other areas. “We received a call about the fire around minutes after 5:00 pm and were able to respond shortly after”, said Assistant Superintendent Lawrence Campbell of the York Park Fire Station. “Four units, from Rollington Town, Trench Town and York Park, were used to bring the fire under control,” Campbell told the Observer. “Two of our men were shocked by loose electric wires while they were putting out the blaze,” another fireman said, while sighing with relief that their injuries were not considered life-threatening. As firemen and police worked to bring the blaze under control, vendors wept

openly as they grappled with the sight of their goods being destroyed. “Ah sleep mi a sleep when mi hear the calls for fire and mi jump up and see people a rush out,” said Damion Blackwood, a vendor who said that he lost everything. “Mi say all now mi can’t believe it. All of mi goods, all of mi belongings destroyed,” said another vendor who had to be consoled by a friend as he watched firefighters carry out cooling down operations. Senior citizen Evadney Redway also shared a similar story, claiming that she too lost everything. “I was at home when I got the call, and when I came, I saw all of my belongings destroyed,” said Redway. She made the comment as she searched through the rubble, trying to salvage what she could from the remainder of her shop that was gutted by the fire. Coronation Market is viewed as the pivotal point of trade and commerce in the heart of Kingston. It was refurbished in 2011, after being partially burnt during the security operation into Tivoli Gardens in May 2010. Police and soldiers had gone to the volatile community to extract then community don Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, who was wanted by the United States Government on drug-trafficking and gunrunning charges. Coke, who ran sections of West Kingston like his own fiefdom, was later captured by local police, waived his right to an extradition hearing, and was sent away to the United States where he was found guilty of gun and drug-related charges and sent to prison to serve a 23-year sentence. The 2010 fire had occurred at a time when vendors had been avoiding the market, after violence broke out in West Kingston. (Jamaica Observer)

Man hacked to death GUYANA -- Forty year old Chetram Bharrat of Haslington, East Coast Demerara was chopped to death last Friday; while his wife, Lomattie Ramdat, 36, sustained several lacerations administered by two men armed with cutlasses, and is in critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).A family member explained to this publication that the two cutlass-wielding bandits who invaded the Haslington New Scheme home of Bharrat and Lomattie by climbing through a window demanded cash and jewellery from their victims. And when Bharrat and Lomattie denied owning any despite the bandits’ insistence on receiving same, the bandits began ransacking the house to see what valuables they could find. Apparently not finding anything of value, the bandits unleashed their fury on the hapless couple, raining chops on Bharrat that caused him to collapse in an unconscious heap on the floor. Lomattie tried to help Bharrat, but the bandits turned their irate attention on her, firing

chops to her face and hands, which caused several severe injuries, the family member said. “When I saw the body (of Bharrat), it looked so minced up (that) all I could have done (was to) watch and continue to watch (stare in unbelief). It was as if I was looking at a movie. I was so shocked (that I) left in a state of dreaming. The wife was hollering ‘He dead! He dead!’ and nobody was trying to help (them),” the family member said. Bharrat, who had worked as a fisherman in Suriname, had fathered two children whom he used to come home to see “on a holiday basis.” He had come home for the Easter Holidays, and had spent time with his children and family members. Neighbours described Bharrat as having been an easy-going person who had always avoided trouble. Ranks of the Guyana Police Force are investigating this gruesome incident. (Guyana Chronicle)

TORONTO CARIBBEAN tribute to Robinson, saying he was willing to lose his life in defence of the nation during the 1990 attempted coup by the Jamaat al Muslimeen, when he ordered the army to attack with full force during the hostage crisis at the Parliament building. Robinson was a true citizen of this country and a true Caribbean man, she said. She said he must be remembered as “a caring father, a resolute leader, a loving son, a devoted husband, and a loyal friend.” The Signal Hill Alumni Choir, Bishop’s High School Choir and Roxborough Community Chorale all sang songs.

21-gun salute for Robbie in Tobago TRINIDAD -- Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Orville London Sunday called for Tobago to be given full autonomy as a fitting and lasting tribute to former president, prime minister and chairman of the THA Arthur NR Robinson, who died from kidney failure at St Clair Medical Centre, Port-of-Spain, on April 9. He was 87. London said this during a state funeral for Robinson at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago. The first state funeral was held at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (Napa), Port-of-Spain, on Thursday. Sunday’s funeral service was not without incident. Shortly after the casket was brought on the stage, the national flag draping it fell off, causing the audience to gasp in surprise. One of the soldiers who had brought the casket on stage had to rush to rectify the problem. Moments later, it slipped off for a second time, as there was a strong breeze blowing across the stadium. The flag was again secured around the casket, allowing the

service to begin. Among those present were President Anthony Carmona, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Chief Justice Ivor Archie, Chief Secretary Orville London, cabinett ministers and Opposition Leader Dr Keith h Rowley. Robinson’s children Ann Margaret,, granddaughter Anushka and nephew Elliss were also present. Allen Granville honoured d Robinson’s national contributions in song; the audience sang along with him, clapped d and even gave him a standing ovation. Rowley said Robinson was a good example of morality in public affairs. He said the late president recognised the importance of spiritual knowledge and urged everyone to emulate the high standards set by Robinson. Rev Joseph Hepburn of the Methodist Church gave the homily. He said Robinson did not embrace the idea of power, but believed in the power of ideas. Following the three-hour service, there was a private service at the Scarborough Methodist Church. Robinson was later buried at the church cemetery, with a 21-gun salute. (Trinidad Guardian)

State attorneys need protection TRINIDAD -- Former judge Larry Lalla says the time has come for prosecutors in highprofile cases to be provided with special protection. His statement comes in wake of the killing of Dana Seetahal, SC. Lalla said Seetahal was one of his lecturers in law school and since then the two had remained close friends. Her murder, he said, spoke volumes, including making clear the need for examining the criminal justice system and its efficiency. “A lot more has to be done to ensure the criminal justice system gets where it should be to deal with circumstances facing the citizens at this time. “The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions needs to be properly staffed to ensure we have a greater number of successful verdicts before the courts. You have a number of good prosecutors, but once the good ones get enough experience, they leave, because the terms and conditions are not sufficient to keep them,” Lalla said. Proper security for prosecutors, he added, was also lacking and this issue needed urgent attention. “The entire criminal justice system needs to be properly resourced to deal with the circumstances that our country is presently in,” Lalla added. He said when he joined the legal fraternity in 1995, he remembered all the prosecutors were provided with security for the Dole Chadee matter. “I don’t understand what happened between then and now. All prosecutors in high-profile matters had personal security. I

would have thought that as a matter of coursee that would have been provided to all attorneyss prosecuting high-profile matters before thee g court,” he said. “I don’t think it is something that is rocket science. It is something that wee should look at putting in place and should havee been provided as a matter of course.” Lalla said given the circumstances off d Seetahal’s killing, a “reasonable mind” would conclude it was an assassination. Elder: I screamed for her and ourr n country Head of the Criminal Bar Association Pamela Elder, SC, who also knew Seetahall for many years, said, “I still could not comee to terms with her killing. “When I heard thee w news all I could have done was put my pillow y over my head and scream. Scream out not only for the loss of Dana but scream for our country,” Elder said. She said the country had lost a d formidable advocate and a person who worked tirelessly for the criminal justice system. “Dana and I worked together, wee worked on opposite sides, and there was neverr d any bitterness between us, no matter how hard we fought against each other, because what wee had in common was our love and concern forr the criminal justice system,” Elder said. At thee criminal bar, Elder said, there were just threee female Senior Counsel, Sophia Chote, Seetahall and herself. “So you could imagine the void. I felt so proud sitting at the front desk with Danaa o and Sophia next to me. “Now there are just two of us. And why is that?” (Trinidad Guardian)

Warner: Void on national landscape TRINIDAD -- Former national security minister Jack Warner is hoping that no effort will be spared in bringing the killers of Dana Seetahal, SC, to justice. In a press statement Sunday, the Independent Liberal Party leader said: “The brutal and brazen manner in which Ms Seetahal was executed is a jolting reminder of the tragic state of affairs in the country with regard to the crime situation and overall public safety. “It is a reminder that there are very dangerous elements in our midst whose existence and activities we cannot continue to ignore or to take lightly. We hope that no effort would be spared in bringing the persons behind Ms Seetahal’s death to justice and that it will no longer be “business as usual” in dealing

with the issues of the criminal justice system. Expressing condolences to Seetahal family, friends and the legal fraternity, Warner said Seetahal devoted her life to her profession and to service to her country. Throughout her professional career, Warner said, she was one of the guiding lights whom the nation relied upon for leadership and direction on very controversial and critical issues. “She was known as a fearless and forthright individual who always stood for high standards,” he said, adding that her passing leaves a tremendous void in the national landscape, the extent of which is beyond description. Police reassure West Kingston residents JAMAICA -- Police responsible for maintaining law and order in West Kingston’s tough neighbourhoods Sunday sought to assure residents that they were making gains in their campaign to crush violent gangs that have been wreaking havoc in the communities. “We want to alert the people in West Kingston and the wider Jamaica that the police are making headway in clamping down on crime in the area,” said Senior Superintendent Steve McGregor. “The changes will not come overnight; it is work in progress, but the results are coming,” McGregor added. McGregor made the appeal in the aftermath of the shooting of four people in West Kington between Friday night and Saturday morning. According to the police, in the first incident, three men were injured when armed thugs invaded a section of Tivoli Gardens called Levy Park, Friday night. Just under eight hours later, a woman was shot in Denham Town. Police said that the violent acts are

being carried out by gangs that were once united but are now fighting each other for turf in an effort to resume a lucrative extortion racket that operated under former Tivoli Gardens don Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke. Coke is serving a 23-year prison sentence in the United States after being extradited in 2010 and pleading guilty to racketeering. Coke was captured weeks after police and soldiers fought gunmen in Tivoli for three days in an effort to arrest him. Police said that, before that operation, business owners in downtown Kingston were forced to pay millions of dollars in socalled protection money to the criminals, who used the funds to run their illegal activities. Sunday, SSP McGregor vowed that the gangs would not be allowed to resume the extortion activities. “Those days are long gone and will never be allowed to return in West Kingston as the police have put in place a number of measures to ensure that it (extortion) will never be allowed to thrive,” he said. Move over Jamaica, Sandals Grenada is taking over! JAMAICA -- The best Sandals hotel in the Caribbean may no longer be Jamaica’s to claim. Last Monday, Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart officially opened “the Sandals hotel of the future” -- Sandals LaSource Grenada -- a picture village of storybook proportions perched on a windswept hill overlooking timeless St George’s, the Grenada capital. “It’s more than a hotel and more than the modern amenities that’s built into it,” Stewart said of his latest masterpiece, at a glitzy opening ceremony in Point Saline on the edge of the capital of the Spice Island. “The attention to detail to ensure the utmost comfort and convenience of the guests sets LaSource apart. The work of the designers, interior designers, and the engineers to achieve that has been nothing short of epic.” To lure Sandals Resorts International (SRI) to Grenada, the former Tillman Thomas Government dangled a hard-toresist tax package featuring a 25-year holiday on corporate taxes and a cap on property taxes for a similar 25 years, plus a waiver on all import duties, VAT (value added) and Customs services charges on all capital inputs for the next 25 years. In addition, the acclaimed hotel chain received a waiver on import duties for 25 years and a cap on the VAT for 25 years on room occupancy. At the end of the 25 years, there will be a waiver on the VAT on consumer goods, as well as a waiver of import duties on food, alcohol and other drinks over the next 15 years. “We did it because we recognise the enormous benefit that the presence of Sandals can have and will have for Grenada,” said Finance Minister Nazim Burke. In exchange for the package, Sandals agreed to invest US$100 million in Grenada in three phases starting with US$30 million in the first phase and an agreement to employ 100 workers, while retaining most of the staff compliment of 225 workers who

lost their jobs due to the closure of the then 100-room LaSource which Stewart acquired. Fired up by the warm reception of the Grenadians, Stewart has already spent most of the US$100 million. In phase two, Sandals added 65 rooms to the hotel at a spend of US$25 million, bringing the number to 165 rooms by December 2013 and employment of an additional 225 workers in construction. In phase three, an additional 100 rooms were built at a cost of US$46m, to bring the total capacity of the hotel to 225 rooms and staff complement to about 425 persons. The Grenada fever caught on and spread to Antigua and Barbuda, then Barbados, both of whom have offered similar tax packages for a Beaches resort -- in the case of Antigua -- and both a Beaches and Sandals resorts in Barbados. Sandals resorts in the islands have typically set the wicket for big increases in employment, airlift to the destinations, the state tax take, unprecedented global promotion of the islands using the formidable Sandals machine as well as, investment and stimulation of the economy in general. At Monday’s opening, Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, who saluted Opposition Leader Tillman Thomas for signing the initial Memorandum of Understanding with Sandals, announced that Grenada was already experiencing a six per cent increase in Canadian and American visitors, a sizeable jump in airlift and had inked two five-star hotel deals with more on stream. “We are extremely happy and excited about the prospects that this brand has brought to Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique,” Mitchell said, mentioning the other two islands of the tri-island nation and pitching it as “a fine example of a safe, luxurious and worry-free destination”. Tourism Minister Alexandra Otway-Noel told Stewart: “It’s a miracle that you have made happen and all Grenada

thanks you for bringing this magnificent brand to our island.” Stewart, in his address, described the hotel as “an absolute miracle”, noting the smoothness and “lack of fuss” with which the construction had taken place. “Something that should have taken two years was completed in 10 months,” he told the large gathering of top Grenadian and regional personalities. “Many highly qualified Grenadians who applied for management positions, opted to take much lesser jobs when they didn’t get what they had wanted, just to be a part of the action.” He singled out several individuals who had impacted his decision to invest in Grenada, including leading local hotelier and former president of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourist Association Sir Royston Hopkin. SRI CEO Adam Stewart said the creation of Sandals LaSource Grenada had been “an incredible journey in an incredible country”, adding that “every ounce of our creativity went into this project”. He thanked the large number of Sandals team members who had contributed, including Jamaicans Betty Jo Desnoes, Andre McDonald, Shawn DaCosta, Winston Anderson, Jordan Samuda, Jeremy Jones, Heidi Clarke, among others. There was a special moment of pride when, after a mere three months of operations, Sandals LaSource Grenada received the Six-Star Diamond Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences founded by American movie legend Frank Sinatra and whose current president, Joseph Cinque, was on hand to present the award to Stewart. Prime Minister Mitchell and the tourism minister joined Governor General Dame Cecile LaGrenade to cut the ribbon, symbolising the official opening of the resort which started accepting guests in December last year and is currently enjoying 100 per cent occupancy. Four hit in West Kingston JAMAICA -- Four people were shot and injured in two separate incidents in West Kingston between Friday night and Saturday morning. Police reported that in the first incident, three men, one of them an intellectually challenged person, were injured when armed thugs invaded a section of Tivoli Gardens called Levy Park. “Reports we received are that gunmen went to the area, saw a group of persons, and opened fire,” said Desmond McKenzie, the Member of Parliament for West Kingston.

Police reports are that the injured, two of whom are brothers, were rushed to hospital where they were admitted. McKenzie reported that less than eight hours after the incident, a woman was attacked in sections of Denham Town and shot. “The injured woman was also taken to hospital,” said the MP. Sunday, a fuming McKenzie said that the incident was the ninth attack to take place in the Kingston Western Division in the last week. “This cannot be allowed to contin-

ue,” said McKenzie, who called on the police to do more to keep criminals, who were locked in a deadly gang feud, at bay. Sunday, following the incidents, residents in the area said that the shootings had triggered new levels of fear. “Right now it looks as if these criminals no respect the authorities. Even with the police in the area dem a carry out dem attack,” said one West Kingston resident, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal. (Jamaica Observer)

Holness: I still have faith in people of West Kingston JAMAICA -- Opposition leader Andrew Holness still has faith in the people of West Kingston despite their recent outcry against Member of Parliament Desmond McKenzie and threats to switch their support to the ruling People’s National Party. Speaking during the Jamaica Observer’s Press Club on Thursday, Holness said that he believed in the resolve of the residents of a constituency which is known for its fanatical support of the Jamaica Labour Party but has recently painted slogans in support of the PNP. “The people there are genuine in their belief. People have been crying out for the party’s attention and intervention. We have been working quietly and have gone in there to show our support. It is not the first time that we have had this kind of fallout where signs have been painted over. West Kingston is a strong constituency,” he said.

The area has been gripped in a bloody gang war which has resulted in several children being killed or shot and injured. Police report that the feuding criminal outfits are at loggerheads over a multimillion-dollar extortion racket and the right to control turf. The residents complain that since the extradition of former strongman Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, things have fallen apart and the community which was once known for its ‘order’ has been on a path of self destruction as young hoodlums seek to stamp fear with the rule of the gun. Holness argued that it is important for the people of West Kingston to find closure from the May 2010 operation by the security forces in search of Coke which left 73 people dead. “There is still some hangover. We need to bring some closure. The incursion

left wounds which need to heal. The nation needs it to heal. We want to heal,” he said. He said that the upcoming commission of inquiry into the massacre will go a far way in bringing closure to the residents, some of whom have not seen their relatives since that fateful day four years ago. The JLP government’s delay in handing over Coke to the US authorities, who wanted him arrested on charges of racketeering, weighed heavily on the mind of the electorate, who voted heavily against the party and handed a landslide victory to the Portia Simpson Miller-led PNP in December 2011. According to Holness, his party has been doing its due diligence and is confident of a better showing when next a general election is called.(Jamaica Observer)

Dana Seetahal SC ambushed, killed TRINIDAD -- Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams said Sunday that his officers will be probing the execution-styled killing of Dana Seetahal SC with an “open mind” and will not rule out any angles or possibility. He made the comment Sunday as he refused to be drawn into speculation on why Seetahal had been targeted and announced that because of the heinous nature of the crime and her status in society, the investigation was now the number one priority for his officers. Speaking at a press conference at Police Administration Building, Port-ofSpain, Williams said: “We want to give the country the assurance that the TTPS is using all the available resources, internal and external, to ensure that we treat with this investigation as a number one priority for the organisation, with the clear intention of pursuing it so vigorously that we can bring the perpetrators to justice in the shortest period of time.” Williams noted that he had already assembled a team of investigators from various divisions, departments and units to investigate the murder, which left the legal fernity and the wider country in a mixed state of shock, grief and confusion. News of Seetahal’s killing was also extensively reportedly across the region, the United States, UK and as far as India. Williams declined to reveal the number of officers making up the special investigative team. “All available resources will be assigned to this investigation. So if there is a need for 1,000 officers to be assigned and that is what is necessary, we assign 1000 officers,” Williams said. Although he admitted investigators had recovered some evidence on the crime scene, Williams repeatedly told media personal that his officers had not ruled out any motive for the killing. CCTV footage He said investigators would be reviewing CCTV footage from cameras at nearby businesses on the route used by Seetahal to assist in clues in the investigation, but also made a sterling plea for eyewitnesses to come foward. “A small group of violent criminals tend to put fear through the entire society, crippling all of us from acting. It is important for all of us to stand up for this country and stand up against the criminals,” he said. He noted that Crime Stoppers had

announced a $1 million reward for information that may assist in the investigation and pleaded with eyewitnesses to come foward and assist. Williams chose not confirm or deny reports that special security measures had been put in place for Seetahal’s colleagues in the Vindra Naipaul-Coolman murder trial - Senior Counsel Israel Khan and Gilbert Peterson, hours after murder. However, he assured that the police would assist in security for all those who required it. Seetahal last participated in the high profile trial of the dozen accused men in that case last Wednesday, when she completed the testimony of businesswoman’s husband Rennie Coolman. The trial, before Justice Malcolm Holdip, is scheduled to resume this morning, but some sources close to the trial expressed doubt that hearings would take place this week, as both attorneys representing the prosecution and the dozen men were said to left in a deep state of mourning after hearing the news of the incident. Well planned hit According to reports, shortly before midnight, Seetahal left the Ma Pau casino car park on French Street before driving onto Wrightson Road and later turning north onto Hamilton Holder Street in Woodbrook. Police said shortly after passing the Woodbrook Youth Facility on O’Connor Street, residents were startled by a volley of gunshots which

was followed screeching tyres. The shooting took place within sight of Seetahal’s apartment at the One Woodbrook Place complex. By the time residents contacted police and ran outside to check, they found Seetahal slumped over the steering wheel of her light blue Volkswagen Touareg. She was pronounced dead on the scene by District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr Atkin Mootoo and her body was transfered to the Forensic Science Centre in St James. Although Williams said investigators were yet to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, some police sources said they believe it was a “well planned and co-ordinated hit” which incorporated two vehicles and a number of participants. Some expressed the view that it was possibly committed by a team who had benefited from special training, as it was performed with “military precision” First responders to the scene said judging from the bullet holes in the driver’s side of the SUV and the fact that it was found in a stationary position, it was likely they used two vehicles-one which stopped in front of her and another which pulled alongside to shoot at her vehicle. Crime scene investigators recovered approximately 15 spent 5.56 calibre shells on the scene. The high-powered ammunition is used in the AR15 assault rifle. Several of Seetahal’s colleagues joined Seetahal’s relatives on the scene and

stayed until the early hours of the morning. They included attorneys Larry Lalla, Larry Williams, David West, who is training under her in her El Dorado Chambers, as well as television personality Ian Alleyne. An emotion reigning Soca Monarch Machel Montano, who was represented by Seetahal in his assault case, was also seen crying on scene. Police sources said Seetahal’s SUV was towed to a crime scene laboratory in Cumuto, formerly used by the Special AntiCrime Unit of T&T (Sautt), where ballistic testing will be performed in the next couple of weeks. The forensic centre was opened Sunday to allow Seetahal’s relatives to identify and view her body. A preliminary post-mortem performed by forensic pathologist Dr Hughvon Des Vignes revealed that Seetahal died from shock and haemorrhaging caused by multiple gunshot wounds. Further tests are scheduled for this morning to determine, among other things, how many gunshot wounds she sustained. Dick’s team of investigators include Senior Superintendent John Daniel, Inspector Michael Veronique, and Lawrence, all of the Region One Homicide Bureau. Family: Help cops solve her killing Relatives of Dana Seetahal SC refused to comment to media personnel as they left the Forensic Science Centre, St James, around midday Sunday. An unnamed male relative, who stuck his head out of a car window as he drove by, screamed that the family was traumatised and would comment at a later time. In a press statement sent Sunday, relatives condemned her murder. “Dana was our hero, our mentor and our confidante. Her untimely death at the hands of cowardly murderers is a tragedy for our family, the nation and the criminal justice system,” the statement said. In an earlier text message, Seetahal’s niece, Danielle Francois, called on citizens to assist in solving the murder. “Aunty would have been “damn vex” and would want the perpetrators prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Francois said. The funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but the T&T Guardian was told relatives have set a tentative date of Thursday at the Tunapuna Presbyterian Church. (Trinidad Guardian)

Bunji, Fay-Annʼs BET 106th & Park appearance sends echo of Soca through NYC Aba Luke Entertainment Differentology- the hit soca single of carnival 2013 made its way to BET’s 106th and Park last week, much to the excitement of true soca lovers in Trinidad and Tobago and certainly across the world. The Viking, as he’s dubbed and his wife, Fay-Ann Lyons fashionably made their presence felt on the New York based entertainment music countdown show, strutting confidently in performance mode, before diplomatically telling hosts Bow Wow and Keshia Chanté that the Tobago Jazz fiasco was behind them. The Trinibagonian soca artistes flew to NYC earlier amid a sea of controversial comments regarding their recent decision to pull out of the Tobago Jazz showcase last week Friday. Despite ongoing chatter on the subject, Garlin and his wife posted photos on Instagram showing that the 106th and Park appearance was happening. With that, the mood of many seemed to convert as sup-

portive tweets and Facebook posts began popping up. Speaking in the post performance interview today, Bunji highlighted that the name Bunji was chosen after much research for a name that would stand out. He said it stemmed from Bungy jumping and noted that much like the sport entails, he has worked at ensuring that despite the words or actions of naysayers or the negativity that sometimes arises, despite how it may attempt to pull him down, he remains forever focused on rising above it all. He was questioned on his Carnival performance schedule and Bow Wow, highlighting a particular night that saw the Viking Band perform at nine events, asked how he could pull that off. It was then that Bunji said his wife, Fay-Ann plays a key role as she is able to hold down the stage with him in a dynamic way. Fay-Ann Lyons, dressed in a pair of colourful pants, black high heeled boots and a black top took the opportunity to highlight her ambitions as well. She told the BET hosts that she is working on her first album with Boy Wonder out of Canada. The duo’s appearance on 106th and Park today was just one of a fleet of appearances expected across the United States as Bunji continues to promote Differentology with VP Records. Religion, sport can serve good of all TRINIDAD -- Religion has had both a positive and negative relationship with sports. On one hand, both religion and sports have been built upon a positive ethos of commitment to hard work, personal sacrifice, fairness and achievement. They both incorporate the use of rituals and customs and it is common to see the invocation of God in training, team meetings and in the celebration of success and even failure. On the other hand, it has been argued that the spirit of competitive sports have sometimes weakened the spiritual bond of people both as active and passive participants. In the Christian-dominated US, Woods (2007) argues that religion has been used as a means to justify American preoccupation with sports. Not only is sports seen as having an appeal to God, it has also been a means through which religious bodies have used sports to reinforce its membership. For instance, Woods (2007) cites the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), secondary schools such as Christ the King and universities such as Oral Roberts University use sports through the provision of sporting facilities and excellent sporting programmes to attract new members, students and even donors. Amara (2008) cites that sports have been able to mobilise nationalist support throughout the Muslim world cutting across class, gender and sectarian differences. She argues that modern sports and Islam can coexist in the same world. However, she claims that sports have to be seen as a site for the negotiation of differences

which can enhance cross cultural experiences. This approach has the potential to minimise the clash of western and traditional value systems which has been the source of some of the controversies in sports participation as it relates to the athletes from the Muslim world. In an in-depth study of eight schools in West Midlands, England, to gain an understanding as to why Muslim girls were withdrawing from physical education, Dagakasa et al. (2011) concluded that religious concerns of the girls needed to be incorporated into the schools’ policies as well as in its physical education programmes. Some of the specific problems that were identified by the students and their parents were the lack of flexible dress codes especially as it related to the wearing of the hijab and the use of public swimming pools. Dagakasa et al. (2011) argued that a more embracing sport policy would allow for the inclusion of Muslim girls. As studies have been conducted elsewhere in the world, the same has to be done in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. The benefits of understanding this link can be multiple and everlasting especially in a society that is highly differentiated along religious lines. As research has indicated, females are more likely than males to be restricted from participating in sports and physical activities as they are expected to be the prime bearers of religious values and practices. Outside of engaging in sports and physical activities for recreational and fun reasons, rea asons, many talented persons may be ddiscouraged iscouraged from taking part in sports seriously because of insensitivities to

religious diversity in existing sporting programmes. As such in formal settings such as schools, once a proper understanding of how religious beliefs and practices impact upon how students view and engage sports, proper intervention strategies can be undertaken. These strategies can be helpful to physical education teachers, parents and most importantly the students. Local religious organisations must also look to put greater effort at encouraging their followers young and old to participate in sports and physical activities. Not only would such activities benefit the individuals personally but collectively it can be a means through which religious groups can further connect with their members. As much as competition and winning is important, sports can also be a good means through which religious bodies can teach important life lessons to their members. At the end of the day it would not

b e surprising to hear some sport administrators claim that religion is not their business but many governing bodies are adopting measures that reflects some degree of understanding of differences in religious beliefs of sport personnel. A perfect example of this is the recent decision by FIFA to allow for religious head wear to be worn by players. Such a move not only recognises the difference in religious beliefs but also paves the way for more persons to come forward to participate in football. Religion when combined with other variables such as social class, family, school and community does impact on the level and extent of participation in sport and physical activities. As such the various sporting authorities and researchers should embark upon gaining a deeper understanding of the connection between religion and sports as it can best serve the overall good of the society. Caribbean Pot: Herb crusted Basa fillet done the Caribbean way aand an nd th nd tthee go goo good od ppart od art is ar art is .... th they aare they re fi fillllets. lets le lets ts. So So yyou ou ou don’t have to worry about bones especially if you want to get your children eating fish.

Chris De La Rosa Caribbean Cooking Herb crusted what? I’ll be first to agree that during my childhood days in the Caribbean, you’d never come across such a recipe. But the new generation of chefs and home cooks are experimenting with great success. We had fish four ways growing up.. fried, curry, stew and in fish broth (pronounced broff). Mom was a traditionalist and her dishes reflected the mentoring she got from her mother and aunts before her. Basa (Pangasius bocourt, similar to catfish) is one of the most inexpensive fish you can get in our city at the various Asian markets

You’ll Need: 2 Basa Fillets Herb crust: 2 slices of bread (white bread with crust removed) 1 tablespoon parsley 1 scallion 1/4 scotch bonnet pepper pinch salt 1/2 teaspoon thyme (fresh) dill optional 1 tablespoon melted butter 1/4 teaspoon lemon zest Dressing: 1 1/2 tablespoon mayo 1/4 teaspoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon lemon juice pinch salt pinch fresh ground black pepper

* You’ll also need about 1 tablespoon olive oil. Remember to wear gloves when handling scotch bonnet peppers (wash your hands with soap immediately after) and don’t use any of the seeds. Remove the crust off the bread (and break into smaller pieces) , give the scotch bonnet, scallion and parsley a rough chop and remove the tiny leaves off the thyme stem. Add it all to a food processor and blitz until you have a crumbly consistency. Add in the salt, melted butter and grate in some lemon zest. Pulse a couple times and get ready to dress the fish. Wash and pat the basa fillets dry with paper towels, then drizzle on some olive oil on a parchment lined baking tray and place the filets on it (no oil on the fish itself). The oil will add subtle flavor and prevent the fillets from sticking as it cooks in the oven. Add a bit more oil if using tin foil instead of parchment paper. Preheat your oven at 375 F. As the oven comes to temperature

lets sh more and le let ts givee the the fi fish h ssome ome mo m ore ree fl flaaavor vor vo or an nd he hhelp llpp keep it moist when it’s done doing it’s thing in the oven. In a small bowl mix all the ingredients mentioned for the dressing, then lather it onto both pieces of fish. I simply used the back of a spoon to paste this creamy sauce over the Basa fillets. Now it’s time to get crusty! Pour half of the herb crust we made over each fish and gently press down on it so it holds on the creamy dressing. In the 375 F oven, middle rack for about 15-20 minutes.. depending on how thick your fillets are and how well done you like your fish. Not you conventional Caribbean fish recipe, but I assure you it’ will be a ‘goto’ recipe the very first time you give it a try. The herb crust will certainly stand out and the fish itself will be tender and moist from that lovely dressing we started off with.

Yoga & youths Geeta Maraj Yoga It seems we are inundated by an exploding yoga industry. The logic behind this trend, is that yoga encompasses all facets necessary to maintain a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle. Yoga once thought of as a New Age dappling has become a part of the cultural mainstream. Today, there are every form of yoga one can possibly imagine, from laughter yoga to bootcamp yoga. This yoga revolution captures the interest of seekers, mainly between the ages of 18 to 55 years old. Youths, however, who stand to benefit tremendously from this ancient skill, are at a disadvantage because of hesitancy in offering yoga as a part of the school curriculum. Youths are likely to face challenges with self esteem, varying degrees of emotional and psychological stresses. Rarely do students verbalize their doubts and insecurities, and are more inclined to seek reprieve by becoming in-

volved with activities which offer greater harm than good to their focus and concentration. Youths of today are likely to seek alcohol, cigarettes, and other forms of narcotics as a release from their discontent. Rarely are students aware of the value of yoga t o these very

same hindrances they face. Today, we hear discussions of yoga becoming too main stream by religious leaders of various sects, who fear it might steer practitioners toward Hinduism. This is far from the truth when you compare the benefits of yoga to youths both academically and socially. Yoga philosophy deals with the idea of a focused mind, a healthy body and an awareness of our connection to a greater energy. When we confuse self empowerment with religion, then we are fearful in trusting that our belief system is unimpeachable enough to withstand any influences. We are presented with an ancient a r t which ex-

Wednesday, ed esday, May ay 7,, 2014 0 21 isted over 5,000 years ago. The aim of yoga philosophy is to perfect our health, focus and general well-being. As a result, we should be confident enough in the foundation of our religion to envisage how the beneficial factors of yoga serve to enhance our spiritual growth - whatever our religion. Therefore, how yoga helps our youths, should be the underlying focus and should outweigh all superficial barricades. Asanas (postures) in yoga brings resilience and strength - both mentally and physically. This not only helps a young student develop focus and courage, but these asanas support greater academic success. Yoga postures assist youths to be more socially courageous, and less impatient with their elders and peers. One such empowering asana is the sun salutation or Surya Namaskar. This is a twelve position posture which incorporates all possible asanas in yoga. Surya Namaskar was once referred to as the King of Asanas, done by the warriors of ancient India in preparation for battle. The reason being, this posture improves total body strength, concentration and vitality. Surya Namaskar also helps to develop a greater level of intuition or the sixth sense. It is for this reason, that such an asana serves to bring tremendous levels of empowerment and courage to our youths of today. Breathing exercises in yoga, help with keeping the mind calm, enhancing reason and clarity. Educating our youths of various breathing techniques can assist in coping with stressful situations, such as, peer pressure, bullying, and academic tension. One such invaluable Pranayama (breathing) technique is the rapid breath or Kapalabhati - this breath involves a series of rapid, forceful exhalations. The inhale is not focused on, as air returns to the lungs automatically through a system of passive recoil. This breath improves concentration and helps to conquer depression and anxiety. Yoga brings personal empowerment whatever the age of the practitioner, and when it is taught to youths who need such strength the most, then it can only stand to be advantageous to all facets of their lives.

Study casts doubt on the efficacy of mammograms Healthcare today and the treatment we receive, is often dictated by what the insurance companies will and will not cover. In our current age of “Obamacare” or as many call it “Obama Couldn’t Care Less,” many of us are paying more for health insurance with less coverage and without being able to keep our doctors. Perhaps the American people would have been better served, if the President focused more on authorizing our doctors to make the medical decisions as to treatment and testing, instead of insurance company adjustors. One reason mammography is used today for breast cancer detection, is because that is what insurance companies will cover. Insurance companies in general, will not cover alternative diagnostics such as radiation free thermograms and MRI’s and accordingly these methods are usually not utilized. This flaw in our healthcare system has been illuminated by a recent Swiss study

bringing mammograms into question. The Swiss Medical Board (SMB) claims that their findings reveal that mammograms save only one or two lives out of 1,000 and that the detriments may outweigh the benefits. According to the SMB, “The mortality rate from breast cancer can be reduced slightly by means of the screening… (but) this desirable effect is offset by the undesirable effects. Specifically, with about 100 of 1,000 women with screening, erroneous results are produced.” The SMB maintains that mammogram usage is based on outdated clinical trials conducted from 1963 to 1991, that the benefits do not clearly outweigh the harms of unnecessary radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, false positives et al., and that women perceive the benefits of mammography to be far greater than the actual data supports. The SMB in conclusion, recommended

against the implementation of any new systematic mammography screening programs and called for a time limit on the existing system in place. When it comes to breast cancer detection, all credible diagnostic tools possible should be made available. Detection and treatment should be based on current and reliable data, so that a woman can make an informed decision based in part on a quality recommendation of a medical doctor. A woman’s choice should not be limited or mandated by non-medical personnel at an insurance company. Health insurance should not be just a numbers game to see how many “insured people” we can put up on the board. Health insurance should be about quality healthcare that actually safeguards our health and preserves our choices to that end. After all Mr. President, isn’t that what we are paying for? (NaturalNews)

New study says seven portions of fruits and vegetables daily may reduce risk of dying A new study says that vegetables and fruits can reduce the risk of dying. While people have always known about the health benefits of eating such foods, what’s important here is that the amount of veggies and fruits is what may help people live longer. Specifically, the researchers involved in the University of London study said that people who eat seven portions of fresh fruit and vegetables every day might be able to slash their risk of dying by up to 42 percent. The eating habits of over 65,000 people were tracked for 12 years and compared to people who ate less than one portion of fruits and vegetables daily; those eating seven portions were shown to have a 25 percent lower risk of death from cancer and a 31 percent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

The findings, which were reported in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, state, “A robust inverse association exists between fruit and vegetable consumption and mortality, with benefits seen in up to 7+ portions daily.” Seven portions of fruits and vegetables: is it too much? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a 30-year-old male who gets about 30-60 minutes of exercise daily requires 2 cups of fruit and 3.5 cups of vegetables daily, less than the findings of this new study. However, it’s important to note that requirements vary based on age, gender, exercise level and dietary requirements/preferences. Some people take issue with con-

suming excessive amounts of fruits and vegetables, indicating that it may lead to weight gain. Many individuals tend to gravitate more toward fruits than vegetables, which could be problematic. Fitness expert Dr. Melina Jampolis says that “fruit has almost three times the calories per serving as nonstarchy vegetables.” So it’s necessary to pay attention to the balance of these portions. However, for many mono-fruiters like Freelee, “the banana girl” who is known for her “30 bananas a day” approach, this news is likely music to their ears. Several people have enjoyed the benefits of eating large quantities of fruits in particular, including people who say they have cleared their acne by consuming a great deal of apples regularly. The natural illness remedy: sleep You can take the medication and you can eat the right foods, but many people believe that the best way to get over being sick is by sleeping and being well-rested. Now, recent research published in the journal SLEEP backs this commonly held belief; the best natural remedy for a speedy recovery from an illness is to get as much sleep as possible! The Study Dr. Julie Williams, research associate on the project, said, “It’s an intuitive response to want to sleep when you get sick... but there is surprisingly little experimental evidence that supports the notion that more sleep helps us to recover. We used a fruitfly model to answer these questions.” By modeling the recovery of sick fruit flies (either sleep-deprived or allowed to sleep), the researchers found the

first evidence that sleeping can actually help induce a faster recovery by enhancing the response of the immune system. Dr. Williams explained, “increased sleep somehow helps to facilitate the immune response by increasing resistance to infection and survival after infection.” Sleep and the Immune System Science has shown that poor sleep can lead to some disruptions in the immune system. For instance, it has been shown that poor sleep during pregnancy can result in disruptions in the immune system which have been linked to lower birth weights (among other complications). In fact, science has shown that lack of sleep can actually increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and even cardiovascular diseases all due to disrupting the im-

mune system and causing an inflammatory response! The SLEEP study brings all of these studies together by indicating not only that sleep affects the immune system but that sleeping more when sick can speed up the recovery process. Wrap-Up It seems that research now does back the notion that sleep can be the best road to recovery, as Dr. Williams noted, “The take-home message from these papers is that when you get sick, you should sleep as much as you can -- we now have the data that supports this idea.” Next time you are feeling under the weather, it might be a good idea to just stay home and get some quality, immunesystem-enhancing sleep! Canola is the new margarine - throw it all out Remember when margarine was the substitute for butter? Hey, I can’t believe it’s not butter! Wow. Margarine is a molecule away from being plastic, and we wonder why so many old folks in America have Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The plastic fat is clogging their brain veins. No oxygen to the brain means expensive 24/7 nursing care, lots of pharmaceutical medications and hundreds of thousands of dollars for sick care. Do you see where this is leading? America loves their canola! Who would really eat it if they knew that it was made with hexane vapor -- a gasoline constituent? Even organic canola that’s “expeller-pressed” comes from something we’re not even supposed to eat in the first place -- rapeseed. Canola is not a plant, or at least not until some mad scientists got a hold of rapeseed and altered it. Yes, I know, this is harsh

for most people to address. Their canola oil food bar will be dead to them. Forget all those salads -the potato salad, the chicken salad, the tuna salad and the egg salad. Forget the macaroni salad and the pasta salad, all creamy with chunks of other (GMO) food stuff. Canola is like sodium benzoate, as it chokes your cells, ruins your immunity and requires extra “processing” by your body just to filter out the toxic synthetic oil that comes from rapeseed, which Mother Nature never intended as food -- that’s why it stinks. You know, when manufacturing and processing companies and corporations make canola, they ALL have to put it through a DEODORIZING PROCESS to remove the stink. Look it up! Canola’s polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)

suppress thyroid function Polyunsaturated fat is a prime source of DNAdisrupting free radicals, thyroid-killing omega-6 fatty acids and metabolism-squashing inflammation. What’s worse for your health than processed white flour, refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup? Try a distorted ratio of fats, like 16 to 1, where the omega-6s and -9s outweigh the -3s. I really don’t care if organic canola oil is your new margarine, but what I do care about is false advertising, misleading health information and myths that are perpetuated by companies who don’t want to give up their “easy money.” High in unsaturated fats, canola oil delivers more than a nifty name that was derived from Canadian rapeseed oil. Do expeller presses remove the stink of rapeseed? Erucic acid, the fatty acid in canola, causes heart damage in rats. Are

you a rat? Your DNA is 99% the same. Consider this: “Since the year 1995, biotech giant Monsanto has manufactured rapeseeds that are genetically engineered to be resistant to the herbicide RoundUp. “Today, about 90% of the world’s canola crop is genetically modified.” So, do you trust the GMO giants of the world to continue serving you “organic” canola? Get smart on oils and do it now. Dr. John Bergman speaks about thyroid adrenal health, oxidation, inflammation and disease reversal. Stop eating canola and all the other processed oils. Learn how to keep a healthy thyroid and adrenals. Check out coconut oil, especially if you cook food with oil, only use real, organic olive oil and keep it raw! (NaturalNews)

Blueberries: superfood for the heart Blueberries are well known as being one of the superfoods prized by health experts. While it is important to remember that eating a well balanced diet is the key to good health, there are a number of foods that have been shown to have particularly promising health benefits. It is often that these superfoods have a particularly high level of beneficial components that are optimal in ensuring good health. Blueberries top the list While there are a number of tasty and nutritious foods that are on the list of superfoods, blueberries continuously top any list of that nature. Not only are blueberries delicious and convenient to eat, their antioxidant qualities make them the star component in the diet of anyone who is concerned

about their optimal health. The antioxidants contained within these berries are known to help cells across the body fight off disease. An innovative study While studies in the past have shown a positive relationship between blueberries and a lowered risk of heart disease, it is sometimes difficult to tease out which foods in the diet are the actual ones that are making these positive outcomes. To address this issue, researchers in Maine decided to take a different approach. Obese rats step up to the plate Researchers at the University of Maine knew that obese rats show many of the same health concerns that obese people show. This collection of

symptoms, often known as metabolic syndrome, includes inflammation, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, high blood pressure and arteries and veins that have a reduced amount of elasticity. This condition increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and affects nearly one third of the adults that live in the United States Because the eating habits of lab rats are able to be better controlled, they make the ideal vehicle to track changes made by eating blueberries. The obese rats were divided into two groups so the effects of their eating habits could be better monitored. Researchers fed one group what equated to two cups of wild blueberries while the other group received no blueberries. The study lasted for eight weeks.

Significant results after only eight weeks After only eight weeks, researchers noticed a significant improvement in the ease in which the veins of the rats on the blueberry diet expanded and constricted. This elasticity helped to lower the blood pressure of those rats. The researchers point the antioxidants present in blueberries as the reason for the reduction of inflammation and, eventually, reversing the devastating effects of metabolic syndrome. It is studies such as this one that underscore the need to eat a diet high in nutrient dense foods. In addition to good health in the present, such a diet can help ensure good health in the future. Think only men go bald? Think again! Dr. Lydia Thurton ND BASc

Health Tips Few conditions render such an emotional response as a woman who feels like she is losing her hair. Female pattern hair loss affects up to 20% of all women. Elderly women, aged 70 and over have rates of up to 40%. This condition, while not life threatening, can cause significant suffering to the affected person. The distribution of hair loss differs between men and women. Where men’s hairlines tend to recede from the front, women notice that the crown, or top of their head loses hair first. Often a part down the middle of the head will begin to widen. Women rarely lose all of their hair, but the loss may be extensive enough that the scalp

is visible through the remaining strands. Years of dying and frying one’s hair with chemical product and colors can contribute to hair damage and breakage, but that should not be confused with true thinning of the hair, from the root. If you feel your hair is not as thick as it once was start with getting bloodwork done with your doctor or naturopath. Thyroid hormone, iron and sex hormones – including androgens, like testosterone should all be tested. Having elevated levels of testosterone, especially the potent dihydrotestosterone (DHT) can cause female pattern baldness. Rogaine is a popular hair regrowth medication that works with moderate success in women. There are pharmaceutical medications that can block male hormones like testosterone. Prostate supplements can also be employed to attempt to stimulate regrowth. What does the prostate have to do with hair loss? Dihydrotestosterone causes both prostate enlargement and female pattern balding. In terms of nutrients, making sure iron levels are appropriate is the first step.

After that, trace minerals like silica and nutrients like biotin can sometimes strengthen existing hair. I find they rarely regenerate growth. In fact, I find that there are few hair supplements that truly work and they are often quite expensive. If you are going to try one, be consistent for at least three months. If not taken regularly, supplements will be of no use. The last resort is hair transplantation. A narrow strip of the scalp is surgically removed and divided into tiny strips and then implanted into the area of baldness. Initially, the transplanted hair will fall out, after three months you will see new growth and then within six to nine months 60% of your hair will be restored. With hair loss, the sooner you treat it the better. It is also crucial to keep in mind that a certain amount of hair shedding is normal. People can lose between 100150 hairs per day. If you feel like your hair is falling out try to observe if the tiny root is attached to the hair strands or if it is simply breakage you are experiencing.

Workout pointers Monique Bartlett Fitness Exercise is an essential in life. Exercise is not only perfect for losing weight, it is also good for maintaining a reasonable body weight, boosting your metabolism and burning unwanted excess calories. Exercise also works to strengthen bones and keeps people looking good and feeling good about themselves. Exercise also gives people the stamina to enable them to keep

up with the pace of their lifestyles. Unfortunately, not many people chose to do what is good for them. Ideally, it is advised to exercise three to five times a week for 30-60 minutes. However, this is not exactly the case in the real world. You should not frustrate yourself by aiming for the ideal when you know that it is impossible to fit into your schedule. If you can manage twice a week for thirty minutes per session, that’s better than nothing. Strength training should always come first. Many women always do cardio exercises first before strength training. A disadvantage of this is that it is possible to miss a critical component of your routine and spend all of it on cardio training. A woman may notice this by not being able to see results even after devoting long hours

at the gym. This can be avoided by strength training first and then doing your cardio. Have some sort of social support. Being in a fitness community may be the most important element lacking in your training program. Social support can do wonders for you and therefore should not be underestimated. It would be helpful to work out in a gym once in a while if you usually do your workouts at home. You can also try classes such as yoga, pilates or even rowing perhaps. You can also join clubs such as a walking or running club. Do not pressure yourself too much. Do not try to keep up with someone else and their training routine or try to look like someone else. Congratulate yourself on your accomplishments and do not get down on yourself if your workout doesn’t go as planned.

Age is not a barrier to Orthodontic treatment Dr. Matthew Weekes BSC DDS MTh DMin

Dental Health

Most people seek Orthodontic treatment because they don’t like the look and arrangement of their teeth. They are embarrassed by their smile. Some develop a lack of confidence and low self-esteem. They feel that their visual image is unfavourable in the eyes of others diminishing their social advancement and access to employment opportunities. The glamorous ads with the Hollywood smiles help to drive this perception.” If only I had my teeth straightened I would be a showpiece of laughter, I could

be king or queen of the hill, instead of being stuck in the valley of despair”. This is the nagging thought of many. Although a beautiful smile is important and cosmetically enhancing, of no less importance are the health and functional factors that may be adversely affected if jaw developmental problems, misalignment of teeth and oral habits primarily related to the tongue are not corrected. Although it is best to start treatment early in life, for some, affordability and other factors, prevent treatment. If however you have maintained a healthy mouth with firm teeth, your teeth can be moved into a favourable position at any age unless medical, psychological or functional problems prevent such treatment. It is the presence of adequate, healthy bone around the roots of the teeth that is a major requirement for successful Orthodontic treatment and not age.

There are many adults, some of mature age that can benefit from Orthodontic treatment. Alignment of teeth can be for the entire mouth or it can be for a specific area. The need could be the correction of crooked teeth in the front only. If conditions are meet this could be for a shorter time than a full mouth treatment and, less costly. Also partial or complete Orthodontic treatment may be combined with planned restorative procedures such as crowns, bridges, implants or dentures. Accidents may cause teeth to shift or be knocked out. In these cases Orthodontic treatment may be required. If you are unable to have Orthodontic treatment done now, it is important to take good care of your mouth by having regular checkups and cleaning which will preserve the bone so that Orthodontic treatment may be possible at a more opportune time.

Builderʼs mortgage, seller take back & private lending

Stephen Mohammed Finance As more restrictions are being imposed on the mortgage industry, more and more Canadians are finding it challenging to qualify for a mortgage. If you are considering purchasing a new home, another mortgage option to consider is a Builder’s Mortgage. This process involves the builder offering financing on the property usually for a three year term with no bank approval required. A fee is associated with the cost of borrowing the funds as the builder is facilitating the loan. At the end of the term you may seek financing through traditional lender channels or request another Builder’s Mortgage in which case new fee will be charged and a new term will be agreed upon. This is not to be confused with a Builder’s Mortgage Company where a builder directs traffic or business to a financial partner for financing of properties in a particular subdivision. You should take the mortgage contract proposed by the builder to your lawyer for review to assure yourself that the contract is indeed in your best interest and all conditions and clauses included are what you have agreed to. A Seller Take Back (STB) Mortgage is a type of mortgage in which the seller offers to lend funds to the buyer to facilitate the purchase of the property. This type of mortgage can also help promote

the sale of property by making it attractive to buyers who do not qualify for the full mortgage loan. The STB in most cases represents a secondary lien on the property as the primary source of funding will take first position. This is a great opportunity for both buyer and seller. The buyer will be able to purchase a property that they would not normally qualify to purchase and the seller will be able to generate revenue through the interest charged on the portion of the mortgage he or she provided. However, there is some risk to the seller if the buyer defaults on the mortgage because the primary mortgage holder will get paid first and then the seller will get what’s left over or could potentially lose their investment. The mention of private lending sometime make clients cringe. It is however, not an avenue that brokers and agents neglect. Clients that may not qualify under the regular guidelines need to consider this option. Experience in buying properties and understanding interest rates would be an asset to clients in their ability to understand the choice of private lenders. Private lenders provide an avenue for financing for clients that may already have a home, may have a lower credit bureau score or may not be able to provide the necessary documents to secure a commitment letter from a financial institution. Such lenders rely on the amount of down payment or equity the client has and the interest is typically higher than a typical bank or financial institution. You may be eligible for a first, second or third mortgage depending on your situation. Some private lending are interest only, which means you borrow a sum of money and throughout the term you make interest payments. At the end of the term you are required to repay the initial sum of money that is borrowed.

Growing number of new citizens in Scarborough SCARBOROUGH -- More than 3,200 new citizens from approximately 135 countries were welcomed to Canada in Scarborough over the past month—more than double the number of individuals who became citizens in Scarborough in April 2013. The continually high number of new citizens welcomed in Scarborough demonstrates how the government is working to make the citizenship program more efficient, helping more people realize their dream of

becoming Canadian sooner. The government’s proposed changes in Bill C-24, the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act, will further reduce wait times by streamlining the decision-making process for citizenship. It is expected that those changes will bring the average processing time for citizenship applications down to under one year and that the current backlog will be reduced by more than 80 percent by 2015-2016. (CIC)

Preparing for the launch of “Express Entry” OTTAWA -- Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander today announced new measures in key economic immigration programs to prepare for next year’s launch of Express Entry, Canada’s new active recruitment model. Express Entry will lead to a faster and more flexible economic immigration system that will address Canada’s economic and labour market needs. To prepare for the launch of Express Entry in 2015, Citizenship and Immigration Canada will begin accepting applications under new caps for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC), starting May 1, 2014. These measures will ensure a steady supply of skilled workers who are settling in Canada permanently and helping to supplement the Canadian workforce in areas where there are skills shortages.

With the FSWP backlog on track for elimination this year, a new cap of 25,000 applications will provide the appropriate number of applications to support expected admissions in 2015. The list of eligible occupations – reflecting the latest labour market needs – will be more than doubled, from 24 to 50 occupations. To support Canada’s need for skilled trades people, the FSTP cap will be increased to 5,000 applications. All 90 skilled trades designated under the program regulations will now be eligible for consideration, although sub-caps remain in order to ensure appropriate representation of occupations. The CEC cap will be re-set at 8,000 applications, as of May 1, 2014, to cover the transition period leading up to Express Entry. (CIC)

Tempers rage - Province ignores pleas to regulate 407ETRʼs plate denial Tammy Flores 407ETR Matters When will our political leaders learn? This is a question I have heard frustrated motorists ask as their pleas for the Province to regulate 407 ETR’s bias application of the Plate Denial process, continues to be ignored. A small irritant, such as making the Plate Denial process fair, has the potential to fester and become a full blown emergent

situation if it continues to be ignored. The group “Stop the 407 ETR’s Abuse of Power” is baffled as to why the Province continue to ignore their pleas for a fair process. The only conclusion they can make is that there is deliberate, political interference. The group says it is content to stay the course through the courts. They are thankful they have found a legal team that is interested in the public interest. They are anxiously awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision on the December 2013 Appeal Court’s decision that the 407Act is inoperative as it relates to people in bankruptcy. Meanwhile, the petition on change. org http://www.change.org/en-CA/petitions/ change-the-407act to regulate the Plate Denial process continues to gain supporters. There are 780 signatures so far. The comment section reveals the frustration motorists

feel. John Molnar from Mississauga at least can make light of the sticky predicament he finds himself in. He says, “Plate Denial after I have filed for consumer proposal... I can’t pay the bill to get my plates back. Rock and a hard place, population ME!” I can relate to Mr. Molnar’s sentiments. Fighting for what’s in the best interest of the public can sometimes feel like what Helen Reddy’s song suggests “sometimes it feels like you and me against the world”. I will continue to write about 407 ETR issues until they are resolved. There is hope that we are closer than ever before. Don’t give up. Please join in the fight by signing the petition and reaching out to your local MPP and tell them you want this problem fixed once and for all.

Travel insurance - multiple options to choose Olivia Boodram Travel Most people looking for travel insurance compare a variety of policies before making their final decision on which one to get. The internet provides them the opportunity to go on-line and compare policies and companies. This makes sense and it can mean spending far less than you would do otherwise. Let’s focus on three of the more popular policies you will find, so you can see which one would be most appropriate for your needs. Single trip This, as the name suggests, covers just one trip. If you need this type of travel insurance, compare multiple providers to see how cheap the policy can be. You should find you can get the coverage you need quite cheaply,

but don’t be tempted to go too low on the price before you check the small print. Look, in particular, at the excesses attached to each policy so you know exactly how good the coverage is. Multi-trip If you love travelling and you know you will be traveling frequently throughout the year, you will undoubtedly be better off looking at multi-trip travel insurance. Compare various providers just as you did for the option above, and make sure they offer the level of coverage you need. Some may include various perks as standard, whereas others won’t. Again, check the excesses and take the time to read everything so you can provide a proper comparison to find the best deal. Multitrip policies are undoubtedly cheaper if you take two or more breaks per year. Also keep in mind those quick trips across the border or a weekend getaway trip. Family This is another type of coverage that may prove very useful if you have a family. Rather than insuring everyone on a separate form of travel insurance, compare policies

that can cover everyone in your party. This is a smart way of getting more coverage for less money. Indeed, some insurers will cover the kids for free as part of a policy that only charges a fee for the parents. It is worth knowing that buying the first thing you see isn’t always the smartest decision. In fact, you could save more cash and get a much better policy by taking your time to find the right deal. Most policies are priced competitively and will provide you with the coverage you need, if you know where and how to look for them. If you start searching with no real idea of what you need, the whole process will take a lot longer than it should. One final tip - don’t assume you will always need the exact same policy for each of your trips. It depends on the type of trip you’re taking, how long you are going for, where you are traveling to, and whether you need to cover other people as well. When it comes to purchasing travel insurance it is important that you do your homework, and in some cases this could be as easy as getting in touch with your Travel Insurance Specialist.

Your Horoscope - May 7th 2014 ARIES

TAURUS

GEMINI

CANCER

A feeling, reality, or necessity has been growing on you for a while. Look to Venus in Aries to thrust you out the gate with it and for Mercury in Gemini to get the idea, dialogue, or project onto its next lap. The stars now boost your love life, and social and financial prospects. Sunday through Tuesday, you’re gifted. Satisfaction and pleasure come readily.

As of Friday, when Venus advances into Aries, you’ll gain a sharper sixth sense and creative resourcefulness, too. Sunday through Tuesday, you’re on a roll. Perhaps you’ve been stymied by one thing hinging on or cancelling out another, but that’s about to change. Watch for Mercury in Gemini to introduce a fresh option that breaks you out of a stalemate.

You’ll enjoy the feeling of Venus in Aries, starting Friday, and Mercury in Gemini, starting next Wednesday. Both planets boost your confidence, creativity, and libido. They also enhance financial and social prospects. What else do you need? It shouldn’t take much to light a good fire. Explore, experiment, try it or them on for size. You’ll make better headway now and in the coming weeks.

Friday’s Mercury/Saturn combination brings you to an important finish line, decision, or realization. From here, Venus in Aries gives you a new take on your reality. In turn, a new priority is set in motion. Whether it’s a mindset or necessity that spurs you, you’re ready. Take a stab at it, and you’ll soon prove this statement is true.

Friday wraps things up on a rewarding note; confidence grows from here. Look to Venus in Aries to provide you with plenty of encouraging signs and to spruce up your cando attitude. Monday/Tuesday, the Leo moon keeps you hitting it just right. Look to Mercury in Gemini, beginning next Wednesday, to stir up more ideas, avenues, options, and social opportunity.

So good, so far; perseverance does pay off. In addition to reaching a sought-after goal post, the end of the week can give you a feeling that you’re making gains. For the next few weeks, Venus in Aries heats up financial and intimacy prospects; keep up to speed. Next Wednesday/Thursday, Mercury can give you more juggling or running around to do.

Friday’s Mercury/Saturn combination takes it as far as it needs to go. Once it’s been said, signed, or done, you’ll breathe much easier. Socially or professionally, watch for Venus in Aries to put something fresh and potent on percolate. When it comes to romance or any other type of decision, it’s hot or it’s not. Sunday through Tuesday, things are working well for you.

The end of the week brings you to an important finish line. You could ink a significant agreement, reach a personal or professional milestone, or gain an official status. The right person, place, or thing should be an obvious choice. What’s cemented now will prove to be lucrative and lasting. If it doesn’t come together naturally, don’t force it—there’s more opportunity ahead.

SAGITTARIUS

AQUARIUS

Stick with it, and you’ll get yourself somewhere good. After Friday, the pressure comes off; things will roll easier from there. In fact, through the end of the month, Venus in Aries keeps your hot-stuff self going strong. Monday/Tuesday, you’re at the top of your game. Mercury in Gemini puts you in touch with more folk. It can also fast-track a project, relationship, or negotiation.

Look for a result, an answer, a contract, or an important talk to set up your next step; Mercury/Saturn can cement it by Friday. From here, it’s springboard time for your home, family, or professional life. Whether you gain more freedom and independence or commit to more responsibility, Venus in Aries says the time is ripe, so give it your all.

3 ways entrepreneurs kill their productivity Tina Dietz Business Development There has rarely been a better time in history to start a business. In 2013, more than 135,000 jobs were added to the US market and guess where nearly half those jobs came from? SMALL businesses. To really make it as an entrepreneur you need tremendous tenacity, top notch networking skills, and a no-fear approach to sales—even in the most heartcentered of business ventures. But if you’re reading this, I’m probably not telling you anything new yet, and what you want is to break through to the next level of time and money freedom in your business. Every industry I’ve worked withand there have been more than 20+ industries internationally-has its own unique quirks and challenges. However, some very common trends arise when it comes to how you’re likely to sabotage yourself regarding time and your productivity. Productivity Killer #1: The “Perpetual Expert” How much time do you spend collecting information, certifications, and more training so that you’re “ready.” Collecting information is only useful if it is immediately practical. If you have a client who has a question, look it up. Google is your friend, and problem solving when there’s actually no problem is a drain of time, energy, and resources. The brain only retains about 10% of the information that it is exposed to, so chances are you’re going to have to look it up again anyway if you need it at all. Your time is better spent finding out what your ideal clients need, and focusing on filling those needs in a targeted and concise manner.

Productivity Killer #2: Having an Open Schedule There’s a difference between being available and being a 24/7 hotline. Have a policy that you will always return communications within a certain amount of time (say 12, 24, or 48 hours) and honor that policy. This gives you room to breathe, builds trust with your clients, and also sets clear expectations. People value a service more when they know they have to plan for it, and most “emergencies” resolve themselves or quickly become non-emergencies if you don’t feed the energy of a kneejerk reaction. Limit checking your email and voice mail to 2-3 times a day for a half hour at a time. Unless it’s someone you’re waiting to hear from, don’t pick up your phone when it rings. These practices will have you focus on your most important tasks and keep your responses to the point. Productivity Killer #3: Being Too Friendly This goes for both colleagues and clients. Obviously you don’t want to be a jerk, but it’s completely doable to be kind even when you’re setting a boundary or saying no. Gossip, social media, and instant messaging, and other kinds of chitchat can wipe out hours of your day, leaving you frustrated and scrambling to get your priorities handled. The same goes for meetings. Start by wearing a phone headset (in the case of an office setting) or putting a “please do not disturb” sign on your office door if you have one (even at home) to reduce distractions and interruptions. Minimize your time in live or phone meetings by partnering up with a colleague and trading off going to meetings and taking notes for each other. As for clients, steer clear of personal entanglements. If you’re with a client who is on a roll with a personal story, reach over and give a gentle, compassionate squeeze to their shoulder or hand and say, “you’re really going through some difficulty right now, so why don’t we take a step back and see where I can best help you.” You can then redirect the conversation to a more solution-focused place. Don’t be afraid to interrupt them, they will thank you for it later.

Planning on doing renovations? Hiring uninsured contractors is risky business Sherene Cole

CIP, CRM, CAIB, LLQP

Insurance Matters

How do you protect yourself as a homeowner or small business owner to ensure that your renovation project gets off the ground? Part of this process hinges on the people who will actually do the work - the contractors and sub-contractors you hire. An informed customer will have fewer disappointments, so find out as much as you can about the contractor you are considering in advance. 1. Obtain appropriate license numbers and a written proposal: This should outline what work you agreed on to be done and the timeframe in which that work is to be completed. 2. Ask for and check references: Do as much homework as possible before you make the decision to hire.

3. Hire an insured contractor or sub-contractor to complete the job. Make sure there is commercial liability and property damage insurance in place. 4. Inform your insurance broker or agent before starting any major renovation project: Your coverage may need to be amended during the course of the construction. Uninsured contractors may have no way of compensating you for any property damage they cause, putting the risk squarely on your shoulders. As well, your insurance policy may not cover damages or losses that occur as a result of the actions of your contractor. Take the time to check with the insurance company named in a certificate of insurance, to verify that the contractor’s policy is still effective and will be throughout the duration of your project. The bottom line is that failing to do your homework can have financial consequences. Presenting, what about connecting? Colleen Lindberg Business Development Have you ever had stage fright before or a fear of speaking in front of a crowd? Have you ever gotten nervous before a presentation, palms sweaty, and butterflies in your stomach? As you may have heard before the number one fear people have is in public speaking. Some people feel like they are being judged, like they are boring and no one wants to listen to them (which might be the case for some people). So the real question then becomes how can I get better at public speaking, bringing my message across and keeping people engaged at all times while I am talking. No it’s not magic, there a few things that you can start to implement immediately that will make all the difference. One of them is making sure you are prepared. Now that might not mean that you have to practice, or you need scripts, but mostly it means that you know what you are talking about and are ready to talk. You have your slides in order, you’ve tested out the technology, you’ve thought about questions people might have and have resources with you to answers those questions, if needed, you have your props if they apply, etc. One aspect of being prepared is to make sure that you have everything with you before you

leave the office, i.e.; remote for computer to change slides, the powerpoint (have you ever forgetten this?? I have before. Good times), batteries for the remote (just in case), handouts if applicable, business cards and/or promotional materials and the list could go on. If you aren’t that structured, try walking through your presentation visually, before you leave the house, from start to finish (i.e.: from the moment you park your car in the parking lot to the moment you get back in your car in the parking lot and drive off, this could also include parking fare, (I got caught with this last night). This will help you to visualize all the things that you are going to need that day to do your talk. So it will minimize the chance of you forgetting something. Another aspect of creating a great presentation is walking people through different feelings in your presentations and different feelings about you. It can be done by telling stories (which could also be called testimonials). When you bring emotions to life for people, they get engaged with the message and what you are sharing. In a typical presentation people should actually be brought through 9 different emotions, in order to trigger different aspects of their thoughts, affective side and connection to the stories/services/products you are presenting. Those 9 emotions are: Like (liking you as presenter) Understanding (of the message) Respect (for you, your product/service/others) Confidence (in you and the products)

Happiness Fear (as an acknowledgement of responsibility or more so in a story telling fear, not from fear based selling) Action (they want to do something with the information you are giving them) Change (they want to take the action mentioned above and initiate change) Lastly, Enthusiasm. (making them feel excited about life, their business and your relationship together.) Having people go through emotions in your talk does take some practice and some awareness when you are planning/organizing your sessions. These emotions are used by master presenters all over the world, and this is one of the reasons they are called master presenters, as they can make you feel this every time you hear them speak. Practice and pay attention when you are presenting. Something to note as well, in order to get focused in creating emotions, it might be that each talk that you do you builds on these traits. For example one week you focus on Understanding and making sure the audience understands your message and then the following week you build on this and add respect on top of it, so that each week/month/talk you are getting better and better at bringing your presentation to life. One way to really get real with yourself, video tape it and watch it. You will see the dynamics of your speaking come to life, good and bad. Another point that will assist in giving great presentations is interaction and dynamic dialogue. Yes I understand that you have been hired to present on a topic/subject

and they are there to hear your expertise, however talking with the audience will keep them focused on your message and you will be able to hold their attention for longer periods of time. If I have to sit listening to a speaker talk for an hour and there is no interaction or conversation happening with the audience, I get bored fast and lose interest. This is the point where you might see people yawning, playing/fidgeting with something in front of them, whispering to their neighbor, checking their phone and it could even be people falling asleep (extreme I know, but could happen). By allowing conversations to happen (ask the audience), or bringing up someone as an example to role play something with you, or asking someone their opinion, brings a break in the “lecture” and allows more creativity to flow. It could even be that you add a video to your presentation or some music, maybe it’s doing an exercise with everyone where they have to talk to their neighbor and then everyone comes back together to discuss their findings, I am not sure what might fit for your business but I do know you can engage people longer and keep them interested by incorporating some change of movement, flow, tonality, speed into your presentations. Although all of us are not required to speak in front of big crowds or even small ones, all of us have conversations with people one on one. What I outlined above can be integrated into smaller conversations with people. Interaction is interaction and the more engaged, motivated and interested people are with your conversation the better your closing ratio will be and the more interested people will become with what you are offering. I dare you to try and see what happens!
