The traditional African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child” has been commonly quoted when studying the logistics required during the development of our youth. Our “village” has never been more necessary than it is today. We live in a fast-paced, instant information, and pressure-packed world. Today’s children are faced with countless challenges and opportunities. Navigating parenthood can be a scary responsibility and so partnerships and supports are welcome and necessary to prepare our students for tomorrow.

The 31st Annual Scholarship and

Recognition awards held on Saturday, September 19th, 2015 at the Courtyard Marriott in Brampton invited parents, teachers and supporting members of the community to present 18 highly motivated and academically strong community minded students with scholarships empowering and supporting the future leaders of our community. The United Achiever’s Club has awarded these scholarships since 1985, to students in the Region of Peel who need that little bit of extra support to help them fulfill their dreams.

Every year the amount of schol-

arship and the number of students has increased. In order to be eligible for these scholarships students must be in high academic standing and be accepted to pursue studies at a registered post-secondary institution. They should be of Black or Caribbean heritage and actively involved in the community or after school programs.

These scholarships are specific to students residing in the Region of Peel, in need of educational funding.

Start Living 365 with Priya Ali Born and raised in Canada to Guyanese immigrant parents, Priya Ali is a 3rd generation intuitive healer and psychic. From an early age, friends and family would come to her for advice and she was always more than happy to help. STEVENSON VS. KARPENCY Superman defends his title with a TKO win Alyssa Mahadeo

TC Reporter It was hands down one of the fastest fights to go down in history as Adonis ‘Superman’ Stevenson took on Tommy Karpency on Friday, September 11th at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. Stevenson’s brute strength was demonstrated early on in the fight, as he

buckled Karpency’s knees with a hard left hand in Round 1.

Stevenson didn’t give him a chance, taking Karpency apart piece by piece, and landing a mean left hook at the end of Round 2 causing Karpency to stagger and fall to the ground just as the bell rang.

Fortunately enough, Karpency looked to still have some fight left in him and was able to beat the count, but just barely returned to his corner and attempted to regain his composure.

It was to no avail, though, as Stevenson scored another knockdown at the beginning of Round 3, it was enough for referee Hector Afu to call off the fight and give “Superman” the sixth successful defense of his 175-pound world title with a TKO win.

It was a brutal beatdown for Karpency, as Stevenson didn’t give him a chance to even land a blow. It was clear that Karpency tried to put up a good fight, but to no avail Stevenson landed each shot on his opponent with no remorse reaffirming his title. Backed by World Champion Boxing Legend Lennox Lewis, Superman brought his A game and showed Karpency who was boss.

Toronto celebrated its first world title fight in over thirty years. Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), in association with Global Legacy Boxing (GLB) and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), presented the fight as a way of reintroducing the sport of boxing in Toronto. The showdown KOinTO sparked much anticipation as part of

the prestigious Premier Boxing Champions series, live on Spike TV. This was the first world title fight in Toronto since Aaron Pryor defended his light welterweight belt against Nick Furlano in June 1984.

Global Legacy Boxing owner Les Woods in partnership with Lennox Lewis, started this promotional company to get boxers the fights and promotion they need to make it to the top. Before now Canadian boxers who aspired to achieve world success had to move to the US and sign with an American promoter. Global Legacy boxing has provided them with the opportunity to stay at home with a Canadian promotional company that holds power, prestige and global reach.

Every year the organization publically recognizes individuals and supporting members of the community who have made their own contributions to the United Achievers’ Club as well as the community.

This year’s Media Award was presented to Grant and Trish Browning for the Toronto Caribbean Newspaper and their work in community and as strong supporters of the United Achievers’ Club.

Community Organization Award went to The Congress of Black Women of Canada (Mississauga Chapter) who has spent many years working closely with the club.

Community Leadership Award was present to Audrey M. Parker who established the H. Franklyn Parker Scholarship Awards in 2013 providing annual scholarships to students enrolled in College and University.

And finally a Special Award was presented to Grace Newsome, a unique individual who surpasses the “call of duty’ in service of the United Achievers’ Senior Group.

The United Achievers’ Club has assisted over 340 students over the years in their mission to push higher education, providing students with over approximately $334,000 in tuition assistance. Every year they work harder than ever to ensure they have the funds to provide these students who are keen on going to College and University.

All of the recipients were humbled to be receiving scholarships in recognition of their hard work and achievements. 18-year-old Madieson Mcneil-Alexander a graduate of Mayfield Secondary School and currently enrolled at the University of Western Ontario shared, “I feel honored to be receiving this award, this is really going to help me going forward in my undergraduate degree, and I’m excited to see where the next few years will take me.” Another student 18-year-old Achidi Kisob graduate of Gordon Graydon and enrolled at the University of Ottawa in the Bachelor of Science (Mathematics/Coop Education – Extended French Stream), says, “It feels pretty special, getting awarded; I did a lot of volunteer work at a Summer Camp called Engage helping Black youth to get interested in Science, Technology Mathematics and Engineering fields.”

Mrs. Delores Lawrence delivered the Keynote speech, giving an inspiring and moving account of her own time as a student, struggling to make her mark in the world. Her advice to the students was “The best way to create the future is to make it.”

Jamaican Poet Ivy Armstrong recited a poem from her own anthology Heritage & Heroes, called ‘A Better Time,’ a beautifully written piece of work that reminded everyone of the past and the better times that were yet to

TC Reporter His Excellency President David Arthur Granger was sworn in on May 16, 2015 as the new president of Guyana. On Saturday, the Guyanese community residing in Toronto was able to meet with the new president at The Thank You Gala and hear about some of the changes being implemented in Guyana. With a crowd of over 700, guests gathered inside the Armenian Community Centre of Toronto, President Granger took to the stage to deliver the keynote speech of the evening. On the agenda were topics such as infrastructural improvements in the country and the efforts being made to combat drop out rates within the school system.

The dinner was accompanied by live singing as guests enjoyed steamed vegetables, peas and rice and chicken. Dessert followed next with a delicious slice of strawberry cheesecake as people continued to pour in for this momentous occasion. As President Granger approached the podium to deliver the keynote address, everyone immediately rose to their feet to welcome and honour their ppresiresi re si-

Education and children are two things that are especially close to President Granger’s heart. As a father of two, he knows how critical it is to have every child in school. Proceeds from the gala will go towards a special project spearheaded by the President to provide transportation for school children across the country.

A man of character and charisma, His Excellency President David Arthur Granger commanded the stage and had all eyes on him as he addressed the crowd. It was evident that he was a natural born leader and the people of Guyana had made the right choice. David Arthur Granger is a retired military officer with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). An avid writer, Granger founded the Guyana Review, a news magazine in 1992 and served as its Managing Editor. His love for the military stemmed from his involvement with the Queens College Cadet Corps. Following his studies at Queens College he joined the GDF in 1965 and quickly made his way to Second Lieutenant in 1966.

Another highlight of the night was without a doubt the raffle, with a very exciting first prize. Courtesy of Fly Jamaica one lucky person in the audience walked away with a round trip flight to either Guyana or Jamaica.

On Sunday evening the Pass the Torch school celebrated their 10th anniversary.

So now you’re wondering what exactly is this school? The Pass the Torch school is the very first Calypso and Soca school in the world!

Yes, you heard right in the world. This amazing celebration was held inside the D’Pavilion Lounge in Scarborough and featured the stylings of both past and present students. Current student performers included Jordan, Ne-

vaeh and Mia while past student performers included Sada, Kempha, Kwesi, Kimya and Thema. This amazing event also served as a CD launch, which will give the community a chance to hear some of the amazing talent that has come out of this one of a kind school.

The Pass the Torch school is designed to celebrate the beautiful art form of Calypso and Soca Music and encourage the younger generation to embrace their culture. Through being a part of this program they not only gain lifelong friendships but also build their selfesteem and self-confidence in the process.

Behind this amazing school are two individuals who turned a dream into a reality and helped to make the dreams of so many children come true. These two people are none other than Calypso veterans John “Jayson” Perez and Dick “D’Juiceman” Lochan.

Calypso music originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the mid-20th century so it was only fitting for the anniversary celebration to also honor the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Day which is observed as a public holiday on September 24th.

Brampton Focus Debate zeroʼs in on issues affecting the community •

TC Reporter With election 2015 less than a few weeks away, the MP Federal Leaders hoping to represent their respective ridings throughout Brampton, have some big shoes to fill in order to win over residents. On Friday, September 18th, 2015 representatives from the Conservative, NDP, Liberal and Green parties of Canada were invited by Brampton Focus to sit down and debate the many issues affecting the community and how they were going to improve on these problems if their party is elected to Power.

The Cyril Clark Lecture Theatre located at Loafer’s Lake in Brampton, accommodated the first all riding, all candidate political debate in an effort to help them engage the community and invite them to get to know more about the candidates and political parties they can vote for on October 19th, 2015. Organizers worked hard throughout the evening to ensure a fair debate, and encouraged all candidates to participate.

Brampton North – Ruby Sahota (Liberal) Martin Singh (NDP), and Pauline Thornham (Green) Brampton South – Amarjit Sangha (NDP), Fazal Khan (Green) Brampton East – Raj Grewal (Liberal), Harbaljit Singh Khalon (NDP), Kyle Lacroix (Green) Brampton West Adaoma Patterson (NDP), Karthika Gobinath (Green) Brampton Central – Ramesh Sangha (Liberal), Rosemary Keenan (NDP) Saul Bottcher (Green)

No candidates from the Conservative party candidacy attended the debate, and those names included MP up for re-elect Bal Gosal, Naval Bajaj, Parm Gill, Kyle Seebak and two members of the Liberal riding Sonia Sidhu (Brampton South) and Kamal Khera (Brampton West).

Their lack of attendance sent a clear message to the residents of Brampton, making them feel as though Harper’s Conservative government does not care to win their vote on Election Day. Candidates were seated at a table designated for each party and questions were directed to specific parties with up to two minutes allowed for response and one for rebuttal. The moderator for the evening Gemini Award winning television producer Michael A. Charbon facilitated the rebuttal and response dynamics between the tables.

During the course of the evening,

candidates were asked questions by panel members Spider Jones, award winning Canadian journalist, author former CFRB radio host and professional boxer, Rick Drennan Managing Editor of The Business Times serving Mississauga and Brampton, Badar R. Shamim, Badar chair of the the International Service Committee at the Rotary Club of Brampton and is Chair-Elect for the BBOT and Sophia Brown Ramsay, Program Manager the Black Community Action Network and the Vice Chair of Corrections Service of Canada Regional Ethno-Cultural Advisory Committee.

Many of the issues that were discussed during the debate included questions about infrastructure development, youth unemployment, childcare and tax policies.

Candidates were urged by the panelist to share their solutions for these issues, but specially addressing the needs of the Brampton constituency. Liberal candidates Raj Grewal and Ruba Sahota, did their best to answer questions backing Justin Trudeau’s campaign and enforcing how they are a part of the only party telling residents the truth.

When challenged by NDP candidate Martin Singh, they rebuked his responses challenging him with their own detailed responses.

Martin Singh in turn gave them their fair share of reproaches, bringing to light that each party stands on a similar platform, and how they have both made promises in the past that they didn’t keep.

As the youngest of the four par-

ties, the Green Party gave their fair share of responses, trying to answer questions to the best of their abilities not making promises but offering solutions to help with infrastructure development and building stronger communities. The most important issues that were addressed dealt with the problem of unemployment rates in Brampton as well as the very high youth unemployment rates that affect the city. Statistics of a 13.1% youth unemployment rate suggests that each party needs to take action to help lower that number. While each party gave satisfactory answers to many questions it also brought up many questions of funding and where all of this money was going to come from.

The only topic that all of the parties seemed to agree on was funding the CBC. They shared how it was important and that instead of making cuts money should be put into the CBC so that they can become more self-sufficient. Another hot topic of discussion included carding, again all parties that attended were in agreement that this is something that should not exist, that it is unconstitutional and it must stop.

Brampton residents that attended were able to acquire more information about the candidates they will have the opportunity to vote for in the upcoming election on October 19th. The focus debate was a great way for these candidates to present themselves as it demonstrated to residents, who will be best suited to making sure their issues are heard in Ottawa.

Councilor Martin Medieros strives to develop Bramptonʼs Multicultural Identity Alyssa Mahadeo

TC Reporter Regional Councilor Martin Medeiros, is always looking for ways to get involved in the Caribbean community in Brampton. Born and raised in Brampton to Portuguese immigrant parents, he attended Our Lady of Fatima elementary school, Cardinal Leger and St. Augustine High School. Martin pursued his undergraduate education at York University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honors and a Masters Degree in International Affairs and Public Administration from The College of Europe in Belgium.

As an active member of the Brampton political community, Councilor Medieros is looking for new ways that he can implement more of the diversity and multiculturalism that is a reflection of the residents of Brampton. Brampton has come a long way

since it’s humble beginnings and the once small town, has developed into a city with limitless potential.

Martin has been involved in the community since an early age, taking part as a volunteer with Brampton’s Youth Council, his church, the United Way and other organizations in the Portuguese community. His experience with his own community has taught him that they like to keep themselves isolated and not involve themselves with the greater issues by integrating their culture and making it part of Brampton’s identity.

As the Councilor for Wards 3 & 4 he has noticed that there is a large concentration of Caribbean people within the Brampton community that also haven’t been actively implementing the culture and flavors of the Caribbean in Brampton. His understanding is that the Caribbean residents are a lively people, from their animated presence in the city of Toronto every summer when the Caribana Caribbean Parade rolls around each year, and he wonders why there aren’t more events like that here in Brampton.

He is very interested in working with the Caribbean residents of Brampton to organize more Caribbean events, such as Caribbean music, food and street festivals. By working with the community it will

open up business opportunities and attract tourists to visit Brampton to experience the many cultures of the Caribbean and add to Brampton’s multicultural identity. Councilor Medieros notices that a large portion of Caribbean residents tend to opt out of voting during election time. “It’s not that people don’t vote, but it is important that local government speak to them and educate them to let them know why it’s important,” he explains. “As residents of Brampton they also face many issues and it is our job to be the voice of the community.”

Councilor Medeiros would like to reach out and educate the Caribbean community on elections and politics and bring any issues they have directly to the Mayor. It is important the Caribbean residents demand services from the city and that we also get the youth involved to give ourselves the attention that we deserve as Caribbean people.

Moving forward, Brampton needs to be a reflection of the people that live here and we need to work together to celebrate that diversity. Councilor Medeiros is willing to take that step and partner with the Caribbean community to work together and find an answer offering his voice and support to get the ball rolling.

“Hydro One Not For Sale” campaign launches in Scarborough Emily Singh

TC Reporter The community of Scarborough is taking a stand against the selling of Hydro One. The first step in this campaign is getting the word out and informing the public on how this change will affect them. On September 16, 2015, Dorset Park Community Hub housed

a media launch for the “Hydro One Not For Sale” campaign. Guest speakers included Rosario Marchese, Chair (Advisory Board of Citizens Coalition Against Privitization) and James Clancy, National President (NUPGE).

The poll statistics speak for themselves with over 75% of Ontario residents opposing the sale. The real question is, what does this sale really mean for Ontarians?

The answer is higher electricity prices. This will without a doubt create further economic hardships on families across the province while creating many other issues along the way. The Ontario Liberal government is adamant that this $9 billion sale is needed to fund a ten year, $130-billion program to improve the area of public transit.

The greatest fear is that these al-

ready high electricity rates will just sky rocket even higher after the privatization of Hydro One. The community needs to be better informed as to how this will negatively impact their lives and their economic and financial positions. The best interest of families should be first when going forward with such a decision. The purpose of the “Hydro One Not For Sale” campaign is to shed light on how the community on a greater scale will ultimately be affected after the 60% sale of Hydro One. Presidential Visit - Guyanese President Granger, meets with the Diaspora in Toronto Alyssa Mahadeo

TC Reporter Guyanese President David A. Granger accompanied by Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally, met with the Guyanese Diaspora on September 13th, 2015, five months after being elected to office this past May. Guyana will be approaching its 50th independence anniversary next year and Granger says that his government is dedicated to making the

country a first-rate destination for foreign investment.

Due to some unexpected setbacks, when Granger assumed leadership of the country in May, the presidents intentions were to give the new A Party for National Unity (APNU) and Alliance for Change a perfect score on the promises that they had planned to carry out after the government’s first 100 days in office.

APNU is made up of five parties and was established four years ago. Those parties include; Guyana Action, Justice for All, National Front Alliance, and People’s National Party/Reform and the Working People’s Alliance. In February 2014 the APNU signed a deal with the Alliance for Change Party led by the previous People’s Progressive Party/ Civic Minister Moses Nagamootoo. In the

May elections the Alliance unseated the Progressive Party.

When asked how he would rate his performance since coming into office the President replied, “We would give ourselves a 9/10.”

President Granger continued to explain, “There were some aspects of the economy we didn’t anticipate when we took over and were saddled with a bill for $16 Billion to bail out the sugar industry. Venezuela decided it was not interested in buying our rice, gold prices were declining and there was a decline in demand for our bauxite that led to the closure of some kilns.”

Guyana Diaspora in Toronto Continued From Page 8 -- Despite setbacks, the President said that the government has been able to deliver on most of their election promises. “The most important thing is people generally feel good about themselves and the way the country is heading,” he said. “There is a greater sense of confidence in the Government.”

President Granger continued, “We want to ensure the economy is on sound footing to produce the best benefits for our people so they can enjoy a healthy standard of living,” he shared.

“To do that, we must ensure that the conditions exist for innovation and that must include reform of the education system. We can’t move forward unless we change the essential structure of the economy that has remained the same from colonial times. We can no longer depend on exporting raw sugar, rice, timber, bauxite, gold and diamonds.”

During his time in Toronto, Guyana police disclosed that last weekend there had been a 12% increase in crime, from last year during this same time.

Granger was asked if his government would consider seeking support from international law enforcement organizations, and he explained that fifteen interventions had been made in the last sixteen years, the last being the British government’s 3.5 million pounds Security Sector Reform Action Plan. “Teams visited Guyana and made recommendations, but for some reason, the last administration refused to implement the plan and the money went to waste,” President Granger is a retired military officer and ex-member of the Disciplined Services Commission. “I am trying to resuscitate the plan to get the British government to reintroduce it. I think we have been exploited in the past and I am not satisfied.”

He added that in the past they requested help from international law enforcement agencies, including the

RCMP. Granger said that a drastic reform of the police service is required to eliminate corruption and there is also a need for suitable crime fighting tools.

“Guyana is bigger than England and Scotland combined and we have about 3,000 officers, which is 20% under what the Service’s strength should be,” he said. “We don’t have a single aircraft, we have a limited amount of anti-terrain vehicles and although we are a riverain country, there is an insufficient number of boats. We have a long coast of about 432 kilometers with no coastal patrol craft to suppress piracy. We also have to pay our police better and make them ‘unbribable’.”

Granger also said that Guyana is extremely vulnerable to transnational crime because it’s part of South America. “We have a 1,100 kilometer border with Brazil, which is one of the world’s largest exporters of small firearms,” he said. “Many of the illegal weapons in Guyana, which now has a gun amnesty, were manufactured in Brazil. Our continent also has large producers of cocaine and we are incapable of sealing our borders.”

While celebrating its 49th independence anniversary last May, Venezuela announced they were going to take over a huge portion of Guyana’s Atlantic sea front. The area in question makes up about two-thirds of Guyana and was claimed by Venezuela as its own since the 19th century, when Guyana was still a British colony. Granger said petroleum exploration is being conducted on the portion of sea space Venezuela is claiming.

President Granger is looking to build his relationship with the Guyanese diaspora here in Toronto and let them know that he is working hard to carry out the promises he made when he was elected. He ensures that the government is committed to diversifying the country’s economy.

Lawyer cites delay by AG: Discharge Warner now TRINIDAD -- Attorney General Faris AlRawi has signed off on the United States extradition request paving the way for case against corruption accused former Fifa vice president Jack Warner to proceed.

The announcement was made Monday morning as Warner reappeared in the Port-of-Spain Magistrate’s Court for the continuation of his case.

It was met with objection from Warner’s lead attorney, Fyard Hosein, SC, who took issue with the fact that Al-Rawi had missed the last Wednesday’s deadline signing the authority to proceed in the case.

Attorneys for the requesting State had written to the court seeking an extension of the September 16 deadline to allow AlRawi more time to examine the extradition documents.

Presenting submissions before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington, who held for Chief Magistrate Marcia AyersCaesar, who is out of the country, Hosein claimed that his client should be automatically discharged.

“This is a very complex case so I quite understand why the Attorney General took an extra week but it is very clear that the consequence of not signing the authority to proceed is a discharge,” Hosein said.

Although he admitted that he could not challenge the extradition documents signed by Al-Rawi and that his client may be re-arrested as soon as he is discharged, Hosein said the consequential declaration pertaining to Al-Rawi’s failure to meet last Wednesday’s deadline may be used in future legal challenges of the extradition.

In response, lead counsel for the State, James Lewis, QC, acknowledged the original deadline had been missed but dis-

missed Hosein’s demand as academic. He suggested it should have been made immediately upon the expiration of the deadline because as soon as the documents were signed the formal extradition proceedings against Warner began and the initial extradition request, which Warner was being prosecuted on, expired.

As he called upon Wellington to dismiss Hosein’s claim, Lewis added that the State was willing to allow Warner to continue to be on bail for the rest of the proceedings.

After almost an hour of back and forth arguments between the two attorneys, Wellington said he would have to adjourn the case to consider the issue further.

“I am troubled by the difference of opinion between the parties on this point and I need time to consider all that is before me,” Wellington said as he deferred the case to Friday.

Monday’s hearing was the first following a series of out-of-court developments in the case last week. Hours before the deadline expired, Al-Rawi wrote to Ayers-Caesar seeking an extension. However, there was no response.

On Friday, Al-Rawi fired several members of the original legal team hired by his predecessor Garvin Nicholas to represent the US interest in the case.

The only two local attorneys to be kept on by Al-Rawi, Pamela Elder, SC, and attorney Brent Hallpike, appeared alongside Lewis for Monday’s hearing together with Central Authority head Netram Kowlessar.

Warner was also represented by attorneys Nyree Alfonso and Rishi Dass.

Warner’s case Warner, 72, of Cynthia Drive, Five Rivers, Arouca, is accused of 12 charges related to fraud, racketeering and for engaging in illegal wire transfers. The offences are alleged to have taken place in the United States, T&T and other jurisdictions between 1990 and when Warner quit Fifa in June 2011.

He is one of 14 former executives of world football’s governing body who were indicted on a series of charges after an investigation into corruption in football conducted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Department of Justice.

Warner surrendered to police in May after a provisional warrant was issued for his arrest when US authorities announced the conclusion of their extensive investigation. Warner spent one night on remand at the Port-of-Spain State Prison before he was able to access his $2.5 million bail.

It took US authorities almost their entire 60-day deadline to foward their official request to the Office of the Attorney General, which is needed to prepare the authority to proceed. The documents arrived in T&T in late July.

In 2013, Warner resigned from his post of national security minister and UNC chairman after the publication of a report from Concacaf’s Integrity Committee showed financial mismanagement during his long tenure as the regional body’s president.

Warner also resigned as Chaguanas West MP but later regained the seat in a by-election.

He then formed the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) but resigned as its leader after it failed to secure any seats in the September 7 general election.

Princes Town cop held driving stolen car TRINIDAD -- A police constable assigned to the Southern Division attempted to walk out of the Princes Town Police Station minutes after he was arrested and brought in for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Police also found a revolver and ammunition in his car, which was being driven by another man and trailing him.

T&T Guardian was told that the officer, aged 38, was held by a party of police

officers from the Princes Town Police Station acting on a tip-off.

The officer was driving a white Toyota Corolla wagon and another man, believed to be known by the officer, was driving his (the officer’s) vehicle a few metres behind him. The officers, who intercepted the constable, carried out a tracing of the wagon and found that it was stolen from the San Fernando area.

The officer and the other man were arrested and taken to the Princes Town Police Station. Sometime after he was brought into the station, the constable allegedly got up and attempted to walk out of the building, however, he was restrained.

The police constable is yet to be charged, however, investigations are continuing.

Vandals denude GTT of $50M –in cable vandalisation during past 15 months GUYANA -- The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) has suffered some $50 million in losses in the past 15 months due to vandalisation of its cables throughout the country.According to the company, the loss amounted to $36 million in 2014, and up to March of this year, the reported loss due to damage by vandals was tallied at $14 million. During the past 15 months, GTT was able to apprehend 12 persons, several of whom were placed before the court.

Acting GTT Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Justin Nedd said the cables were vandalised for the copper they contained.

The price for copper is currently at an alltime low because of less demand in China, and according to Nedd, this happens to be a good thing for the company as there has

been a reduction in theft. He said the company has been make efforts to address the problem.

“Notwithstanding, we have had discussions with the government to help us to prosecute the perpetrators of copper theft.

It is something we have been dealing with, it is extremely expensive since there is not only a cost to replace the infrastructure but it is expensive as a matter of productivity to customer. It is a problem that we are acutely aware off but not all the variables are within our control,” he said.

Nedd lamented that aside from the dollar figure to the loss, every time a technician goes out to fix the damaged cable, it is an opportunity cost as the technician could have been installing a service for a customer. GTT recently announced the

rebranding of the company with focus on “doing more” including ensuring faster Internet speeds and improved customer services.

GTT has a base of over 400,000 subscribers and is the only company in Guyana that provides landline, mobile, Internet and wire line services, but it has not changed its brand and logo over the past 24 years.

“We now want to change how we approach our customer. We thought it fit that we start a new era, start with a new brand and start with a new mantra of doing more,” Nedd had told reporters at a press briefing to announce the rebranding.

Former Trinidad Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar defends EBC challenge TRINIDAD -- What if the Elections and Boundaries Commission was wrong in its decision to extend polling by one hour in Trinidad during the September 7 general elections. That is the question the court must decide before any other national election is held in this country, new Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said after receiving her instruments of appointment from President Anthony Carmona at his office in St Ann’s.

Several former ministers, including Roodal Moonilal, Surujrattan Rambachan, Tim Gopeesingh, Christine Hosein and Fazal Karim were present for the ceremony. Notable absent were COP leader Prakash Ramadhar and TOP leader Ashworth Jack but NJAC leader Kwasi Mutema was present.

Persad-Bissessar was forced to tell those present before the event began that its late start was due to no fault of her own.

She said the delay was due to a request from President Carmona to meet with her before the event got underway. PersadBissessar said tweets about her being late for the event were false as she was there on time.

She then left the room for the meeting with the President, minutes later she arrived for the ceremony to begin.

Persad-Bissessar said the legal challenge to the EBC decision was in the interest of all citizens. “It is in the national interest to have a determinative ruling from the courts as to the parameters of the EBC’s powers under section 71 of the Constitution and under the Representation of the Peoples Act,” she insisted.

In response to criticism of the UNC move, Persad-Bissessar said: “We should not be criticised for doing what is right and lawful under our democracy.” The Opposition Leader said: “The decision of the court in these matters will provide certainty and clarity for future elections.”

She said: “It is better to use the avenue of challenge provided by the Constitution than to harbour lingering doubts and encourage seething resentment at what happened on the evening of 7th September, 2015. We have taken the hard road in the public interest in bringing these court matters.”

She insisted: “Before any other elections in this country, every person must know whether the extension was wrong or was right. Right now, no one knows for sure and there are as much arguments for as there

deciding these challenges and of interpreting our Constitution to set the legal limits of the EBC’s powers,” she insisted.

She also noted that the notion of restorative dialogue had become fashionable on public platforms in the recent past.. “We have past politicians, pseudo-politicians and those who should not be politicians, in this post-election period, mentioning this phrase of restorative dialogue like a mantra,” she added. But the new Opposition Leader said: “One cannot call for “Restorative Dialogue” while at the same time declaring one southern community as unfit to host a university campus because of its perceived isolation.

Does one really expect restorative dialogue after such statements are made?”

Last Friday, in an emergency sitting, attorneys for UNC were granted leave to file the petitions by High Court Judge Mira Dean Amorer.

The UNC is claiming that the EBC’s rules and the Constitution only gave it the power to adjourn an election in instances of public violence and not the power to extend the traditional election timeframe of 6 am to 6 pm.

The Opposition is seeking to have the court declare the results in six marginal constituencies San Fernando West, La Horquetta/Talparo, Toco/Sangre Grande, Tunapuna, St Joseph and Moruga/Tableland declared null and void. If successful, the court may order that by-elections be held or may possibly rule that a declaration that the EBC breached its powers be granted.

Monday, the former prime minister said based on the Constitution, all arms of the State must operate within their provisions. “One of the pillars of our Constitution is therefore the rule of law—governance and State activity according to law—not according to the “Divine right of Kings” or the arbitrary dictates of some self-proclaimed elitist group, masquerading as “independent,” she added.

She quickly added however that the rule of law “does not and cannot mean that our independent institutions must operate

outside of their constitutional remit, or that their constitutional independence is a justification for what may be arbitrary or biased actions.”

She also responded to comments by “independent” commentators that the legal challenge to the election results was an exercise in futility and that the Opposition should just accept the results and move along.

Persad-Bissessar said she “respectfully disagrees with these so-called independent minds. I wonder if the proverbial shoe were on the other foot, what would they say?” Admitting that the voice of the people was the voice of God, Persad-Bissessar said it was “based on the rule of law, the voice of the people is heard by constitutionally mandated free and fair elections, conducted in accordance with certain and clear rules and overseen by an independent electoral institution.”

She said what if there was uncertainty in the exercise of a constitutional power by the body set up to oversee elections?

“What happens if the decision of the Elections and Boundaries Commission to extend the closing of the polls in Trinidad appears to be outside of the specific rules and laws governing the elections process?” She said there was Constitutional provision for a Representation Petition to the Court by an elector or by a candidate. “The Court, under our Constitution, has the important task of

Persad-Bissessar said while restorative dialogue is noble in its intent, “is it really applicable to the political realm in a liberal democracy, where not everyone is expected to share the same political views?” Without calling names, she then went on to say: “There are some who outwardly declare themselves “independent” of the necessary political tensions in our democracy.”

While acknowledging that she respected the rights of those people to express such a position, Persad-Bissessar said: “It should never be that independence means holding oneself apart and above the political masses.

Elitism in all its forms should have no place in a democracy that espouses the equality of all.” And the Opposition Leader said citizens who choose to openly declare their political allegiances “should not be looked down upon by others who hide their opportunism under the veil of neutrality and ‘none-of-the-above’.”

Persad-Bissessar said: “Nothing is wrong with taking a political side (as) that is what democracy is about.”

She added that: “Our politics, however, should never interfere with our personal and community relationships and our national patriotism and pride as one people (and) public displays of apparent independence should not be used as a mask for political activism.”

She said: “Sometimes those masks do slip, and those persons end up accepting political appointments despite the so-called independent institutions and offices they recently held.”

Itʼs progress - Portia goes after child abusers Portia says PNP leading nation to prosperity; little on crime JAMAICA -- Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller used the platform of the People’s National Party’s (PNP) 77th annual conference to tout an agenda of progress and prosperity, while saying very little on the issue of crime which many were expecting her to address.

On the issue of crime, which the Opposition on Friday insisted that the prime minister address at the conference, Simpson Miller said the Government is improving the operational capabilities of the security forces, and highlighted the passage of several pieces of legislation aimed at boosting crime-fighting, as well as the refurbishing of court facilities across a number of towns.

A passionate Simpson Miller also reminded party supporters inside the National Arena in Kingston that stricter laws are coming for those found guilty of rape and carnal abuse, and also parents who neglect their children.

But, for the most part, the party president’s speech focused on the Government’s achievement to include efforts to improve social security, through a $5.5-billion expenditure on social programmes, an additional $600 million for pensioners, and increases in grants to students under the Programme of Advancement through Health and Education. She also pointed to additional expenditure in the health and education sectors, as well as improved infrastructure across vulnerable communities.

Meanwhile, Simpson Miller chided the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) for its harsh criticisms of the Government’s policies and programmes, pointing out that up to September 2007, when the JLP took over, the economy was growing.

“The number of persons below the poverty line was less than 10 per cent... the unemployment rate was 9.6 per cent, the lowest in our history. Jamaica had eight consecutive quarters of positive economic growth up to 2007. Jamaica enjoyed good relationships with the multilateral agencies.

Jamaica was headed in the right direction,” she told the mass of chanting, dancing, vuvuzela-blowing supporters.

The prime minister charged that when the JLP left office at the end of 2011, however, “the economy was in shambles”, although partially because of the global economic crisis, “but mainly because of poor management”.

She further accused the JLP of abandoning the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme and presiding over 14 consecutive quarters of negative growth.

“We must never go back there,” the PNP president declared, adding that her Administration had no choice, when it took office in 2012, but to renegotiate a deal with the IMF. She said although the terms of that agreement has been challenging, it was necessary, boasting of the nine IMF reviews that the Government has survived.

“By passing the IMF quarterly reviews, Jamaica has been able to re-enter the global capital markets and secure the lowest interest rates ever. Our country’s credit rating has consistently improved; multilateral funding has been released for numerous projects, we are meeting our fiscal targets, and we are reducing Jamaica’s national debt,” Simpson Miller said.

She argued that the Government had not just passed IMF tests, but has actually improved lives, pointing to what she said was the creation of 60,000 jobs under the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme, expansion of the business process outsourcing sector, jobs provided through projects such as the north- south link of Highway 2000, hotel expansion, the resumption of bauxite mining, and more financial support for the micro small and medium-sized sector.

She dismissed criticism that the economy is in a slump, contending that over the past three years $53 billion had been spent on the tourism sector, and that foreign direct investment for 2014 was more than US$700 million.

She also underscored investment projects in the energy and agricultural sectors, and the development of the island’s sea ports and airports to promote trade.

Meanwhile, Simpson Miller worked supporters inside the packed National Arena into a frenzy as she delivered her message, and despite the palpable mood of

expectation and even the blaring of the telltale Fly di gate, from the sound system after the party president’s over 90 minute-long speech, there was to be no announcement of a general election.

Before launching into her presentation, Simpson Miller told Comrades that, while the party respects the voices of all its members, the conduct of some had not been in keeping with the rules and spirit of the PNP. “We have a constitution that provides us with guidance and structure that we must honour and respect. No issue in the PNP is beyond the capacity of our constitution and democratic system to address. If we follow these, we will remain on a path that is decent and right,” she stated, stressing that the party remains united in its mission.

The comments come in the wake of the recent battle between St Elizabeth North Eastern Member of Parliament Raymond Pryce and challenger businessman Evon Redman, which saw Pryce supporter and former mayor of Black River, Daphne Holmes, securing an injunction in the Supreme Court to block the delegates’ selection. The action was said to have ticked off the PNP leadership, who days later squashed the matter.

Pryce was said to have withdrawn his bid from the selection process. Reports followed that Redman had been approved to contest the seat by the PNP leadership.

Let us not tear ourselves apart, PJ tells conference JAMAICA -- Former Prime Minister PJ Patterson told Monday’s annual conference of the People’s National Party (PNP) that the party has no intention of turning back.

“We have proven the test of time.

No matter, the power, the force, the enemy, the foe, we are not going to turn back,” Patterson told the packed National Arena in Kingston, as the three-day 77th annual conference of the ruling party drew to a close.

“Let us not tear ourselves apart, this is a time for love, this is a time for peace...

Speak the truth and keep faith with the people, it will soon be time to reap the trust they repose in us.

“And lastly, this is no time to lose.

Let us pledge to work harder, in full harmo-

ny, and remember that whenever the trumpet shall sound and the gate shall be unlocked, it will be a time for the PNP to dance,” he told the cheering crowd.

Patterson, who has become a virtual staple at the PNP’s annual conferences, again sought to lift the spirit of the faithful prior to the grand finale, the closing speech

by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.

“This is not a time to breakdown, it is a time for us to rise up and build. This administration led by Portia Simpson Miller has worked systematically to halt and reverse the deterioration in the economy and to improve the assessment of Jamaica so that we are no longer pariahs in the international community,” he said.

The PNP, he said, has had to overcome many challenges over the past seven decades, and has to do it again when the next election comes.

“We have to, when the right time comes, win again and show that the mission of the PNP will be fulfilled. So, this is a time for the party to grow and this is a time for the party to be stronger and mightier yet” he said, before quoting from the scripture Ecclesiastes 3, which speaks to a time to plant and a time to reap.

“Let us remember the good seeds that our party sowed, so that we can reap when the time of harvest comes,” he commented.

Patterson said that the right deci-

sions have been taken by the PNP government, “but they are hard, as you know, and as we say ‘rain a fall but dutty tough’,”.

“We cannot afford to run the risk of having the reputation that we have developed for living according to our words to be undermined by any administration in the years to come. It is time for us to embrace one another, to embrace our youths who are the future of our party and our country, and to continue to promote respect and honour of our women, so that they reach their rightful place in the society,” he added.

Movie time in T&T as TIFF shows flicks from across the Caribbean!

Entertainment Movies and more movies! Trinidad and Tobago is definitely living up to its status as the epicenter of entertainment and activity in the Caribbean. The 9th edition of the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival got underway on Septmeber 15th and movie buffs will take in the featured flicks through September 29th, allowing several independent Caribbean filmmakers an opportunity to have their work displayed and hopefully enjoyed.

The festival was launched last Wednesday at Queen’s Hall in St. Ann’s, Trinidad. Prior to the launch however, festival organizers extended invitations

to two pre-festival limes as they called it where invitees would get a taste of what lay ahead as the festival came into focus.

This year the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival features several movies however one of the most anticipated

is “Bazodee” – a flick that features Caribbean soca phenom, Machel Montano who makes the leap onto the silver screen with his motion-picture debut.

The movie will have its world premiere at the Festival on September 23rd.

Bazodee is a musical drama about a rugged soca singer, Lee, (played

by Montano) who falls for a beautiful young Indian woman, Anita (Natalie Perera). Anita is however engaged to Kumar, a man she doesn’t love (Staz Nair).

She is the daughter of Ram (Kabir Bedi), a secretly deep-in-debt businessman and when Anita encounters Lee who is hired at the last minute to perform at her engagement party, sparks fly, and soon the two fall for each other. Nikhil (Valmike Rampersad), Anita’s malevolent, future brother-in-law, notices and once he discovers the truth about Ram’s finances, Nikhil threatens to expose everything, forcing Anita to fight for the wealth that truly matters—love.

Entertainment New artiste alert! The carnival bug seems to be biting really hard. In fact, seems like new artistes are popping up from every corner of the Caribbean, every day. Barbados is home to the latest soca newbie and with a brand new single

called, “Survive The Weekend”, Damian Marvay’s hoping that this will be his lucky break.

The Barbados born singer/ songwriter/performer is dubbed a “full package”, with his public relations team assuring that he’s got the talent, personality and charisma to fit seamlessly into T&T’s carnival arena. Mavay has, in the past, lent vocals as background to several artistes, among them, Bunji Garlin, Rupee, Fadda Fox and Farmer Nappy.

His breakthrough on the soca circuit during Cropover 2015 was said to be wellreceived with the single, “Survive The Weekend” being lapped up by many.

Red Boyz – the infamous Bajan soca production outfit that has made Farmer Nappy the groovy soca hit maker he is, no doubt. Marvay’s team says background vocals done for Nappy by him, immediately impressed Scott Galt of De Red Boyz and the conversations that followed led to the recording of “Survive The Weekend.”

EtceteraBuzz has learnt that already the song title and various lines have become popular hashtags. It’s also been used for two different advertising campaigns in Barbados during the Crop Over season. Added to that Marvay was recruited by Farmer Nappy to form part of his band, which includes De Red

Boyz.

In the past few months, the up and comer has been traveling with Farmer, performing on stages in various territories. He says the experience has been humbling and notes that the highlight so far was his debut in Canada for Virgin Mobile’s Indie Fridays finale in Toronto.

Now, Marvay is officially under Farmer’s Management Company ‘Country Life Entertainment’ and is working on new material for release in the coming months so guess what!? Seems like by all accounts, Damian Marvay will be chilling in T&T for Carnival 2016! Get familiar!

Bassarath wants $31m for cricket development TRINIDAD -- President of the T&T Cricket Board of Control (TTCB) Azim Bassarath and Jeffrey Guillen, team manager at Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) are in disagreement over the future development of the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva.

Speaking to Andre Baptiste on iSport radio programme, Bassarath said his executive submitted a budget totaling $31 million to the ministry of sport for fiscal 2015-2016 for the construction of a mega facility.

He explained that $3 million was being requested for the erection of a sand

based outfield and another $2 million for an electronic scoreboard.

The TTCB already purchased and imported bleachers to accommodate 1,000 spectators from its existing budget.

But Guillen, in an immediate response, did not hold back his objection to this move which he believed would be a waste of tax-payers funds.

Bassarath said, “We would like to see a full-fledged facility developed. The Brian Lara Stadium (in Tarouba), we also want to see that complete, hoping that within the next five years it will be completed. I

have made several calls for the completion of the Stadium, but not only to complete the Stadium. We would like the Stadium to be handed over to the TTCB to run the facility.”

In Guillen’s view, however, facilities at the National Cricket Centre should be upgraded to a world class development facility.

“So, if that (Brian Lara Stadium) is being finished, why spend money developing Couva? I think I would like to see developed a first class training facility in terms of indoor cricket nets; in terms of outdoor cricket nets; in terms of audio visual (equipment); in terms of gym (equipment); in terms

of the science aspect of the game. And, I am pretty sure the Brian Lara Stadium would be finished and we can spend $8 or $9 million on the Couva Centre, and get that into a first class training facility,” he said.

Guillen added, “Take the difference of that money and build an indoor cricket facility in the east, an indoor facility in south to increase the amount of people who can play the game later on in the afternoon and in the evening, with bowling machines and coaches and get more clubs involved with those facilities. And I agree the Lara Stadium should be handed over to the TTCB.” - Trinidad Guardian

No pressure on Ramdin TRINIDAD -- As the West Indies players assemble Monday morning in Barbados for a pre-tour camp, former Test captain Denesh Ramdin says that he is not under any pressure.

Ramdin, the solid wicketkeeper/ batsman said: “I am looking forward to the camp and getting in some work before the tough Sri Lankan series comes up. It is going to be a very tough tour because the conditions are tough and we have to do as much work going into the series, if we stand a chance of doing well.”

Ramdin was removed as West Indies Test captain after 14 matches and 15

months in charge and has been replaced by Jason Holder, who is also ODI captain. The West Indies will play two Test matches, three ODIs and two T20s on the tour which officially opens with the first Test match on October 14 at the Galle International Stadium.

Ramdin was told by the West Indies selectors that they wanted him to concentrate on his batting. Ramdin believes he can deliver with the willow in Sri Lanka. “I feel good at the moment, looking to hit some balls and get my game going. It will be important to spend time at the crease and forge partnerships with whoever is batting with me.”

Asked whether he is feeling pres-

sured by the presence of two other wicketkeeper/batsmen in the form of Shane Dowrich and Shai Hope in the squad, Ramdin responded: “I am not feeling any pressure at all. They might be under more pressure than me because they have less experience and they will be batting higher up the order.”

He added that he will extend his fullest support to Holder and looks forward to the challenge ahead. “Jason is a good guy, I advised him on many things during the World Cup and I intend to do my part in this series. He is a young captain and needs all the support he can get in order to make a difference.

“The senior men on the team have to make their experience count for him and people like Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Kraigg Brathwaite and myself have to make sure we have good totals. Then the bowlers like Devendra Bishoo must lead the charge.

“Bishoo is a key man in those conditions for us and he has been bowling very well, so we need to back him up and look to take the fight to the home team.

“I think we have the all round strength to beat this team and we are going to give it our best efforts.”

Caribbean Cooking As a young fella on the islands my brother and I would always volunteer to go help dad in the garden whenever we knew cucumbers were in season. We had a stash of salt and a few cloves of garlic in the make-shift shed, where dad would take his breaks from the midday sun. With scotch bonnet pepper (congo as we’d say) and shado beni fresh from the garden.. we’d always make a huge bowl of this ‘chow’ with the ‘baby’ cucumbers (always the sweetest). Immediately after we’d hit the river to go fishing, followed

by hours hours urss of of swimming swim wim mmi ming ng iin n th thee co cool oll rrefreshing efre ef reesshhin ing ing by waters of the Guaracara river. Funny thing is dad never got our assistance, but he never peeped a word to mom!

You’ll Need: 6 Dill cucumbers 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 lemon (juice) 8-12 cherry tomatoes 1/2 scotch bonnet pepper (no seeds) 2 tablespoons cilantro (chopped) 1 clove garlic (crused or diced fine) 1/2 small red onion (optional) You can use any cucumber you have on hand and the option to peel or not is totally up to you. Remember to wear gloves when handling scotch bonnet peppers and to wash your hands immediately after with soap and water. You can cut back or use more of the pepper if you wish. Traditionally we would use shado beni (culantro) instead of the ci-

It was early summer when I did this recipe so I had access to what’s called dill cucumbers (basically small cucumbers) for this recipe, but you can use any cucumber you have on hand. You have the option of peeling or not. In my case, these small cucumbers are quite sweet and I find that the skin adds a lovely texture to it all.

What I would recommend doing is not only washing them very well, but to soak them in cool water to make sure all the dirt and sand drops of them.

Cut the stems and bottoms off and cut into spears and place in a large bowl. I also had some cherry tomatoes, so I opted to add them to the salad/chow for some added flavor, color and texture. You can use any tomato you have.

Crush or dice the garlic very finely, chop the cilantro and you can dice the scotch bonnet or cut it into large pieces so when you serve it, your guests can easily identify the pieces and avoid them.

Basiicall caally lll all you’re doing at this point is Basically assembling everything together and giving it a good toss. For best results, allow it to chill and marinate in the fridge for about 1/2 hour.

If you’re new to Caribbean cuisine or this website, ‘chow’ is basically a spicy pickle we make with tart fruits.. in most cases green mangoes, pineapple etc. In this case we used cucumbers with the same sort of effect.. except, you’ll get a more juicy and refreshing finish.

If you don’t have lemons you can use lime or orange juice for a different flavor profile and if spicy is not your thing.. you can leave out the scotch bonnet pepper.

In the video below you’ll notice that I didn’t add any red onions.. so that is totally optional.

Yoga Specialist Beginning a yoga practice can be intimidating and it can be difficult to know where to start. There are so many varieties of yoga available, Hatha, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Bikram, and it can be daunting.

If you are an active person you may like something at a quicker pace, like Ashtanga Yoga, or maybe you’re someone who has never really enjoyed physical activity, so a Hatha or a Yin Yoga class may suit you. Start

with researching the various styles of yoga and decide based on your physical capabilities as well as what you might be hoping to get from this practice of yoga. Will you be doing yoga as a physical exercise or are you looking to yoga as a meditative practice?

Perhaps a combination of both mind and body relaxation is your goal.

Once you have decided on what style of yoga and level, you now have the next question. Will I practice at home, alone?

Or will I go to a gym or yoga studio?

Another option is creating a home yoga practice, being guided by a book, DVD or online yoga classes. There is currently a great variety for practicing yoga at home.

Paying $20 a month for hundreds of yoga classes’ right at your fingertips. This is certainly budget friendly and you get to partake in yoga classes’ lead by some famous yogi’s,

but there is something wonderful and soulfilling about walking into a yoga studio, being greeted by burning incense, sipping herbal tea post yoga, that feeds the soul. Being surrounded by fellow yogis creates a great energy in a room. It is a wonderful feeling of community and total bliss. Many yoga studios offer new student introductory specials such as one week for $20 or your first class free. This is a great way to try out different classes, discover your style of yoga and have the opportunity to be adjusted and corrected in class to be sure your asanas (poses) are in proper alignment. Unlimited packages, class packages and drop in options are the norm for the yoga studio setting.

Your next option is the gym. This can be hit or miss. Surrounded by weights and other equipment, outside the door dance music can be heard, so this experience might

not be as serene as you are hoping. In some cases though gyms offer a yoga studio experience in a beautiful room and talented yoga teachers. Gym yoga classes are usually at a monthly fee or class sessions/pay as you go.

If you work out and are very active then the gym option may work best for you.

Wherever you choose to go I still recommend a home yoga practice. Whether daily or several times a week your body will thank you. The asanas will become a little more comfortable and when you reach those toes for the first time in twenty years you will smile to yourself and take a moment to celebrate. It is because of that feeling of joy and utter bliss that you will continue to do yoga and not just because you can touch your toes but because you are practicing the act of self-love and that truly is the best practice to take part in.

Many non-dairy milk alternatives are loaded with chemicals Allergies to lactose, casein, and other milk derivatives are on the rise in the industrialized world, and many people are turning to milk alternatives made from soy, rice, and almonds instead. But a large percentage of these products contain added fillers and chemicals that are perhaps more harmful to health, and may even contain ingredients linked to causing cancer.

Soy milk is an endocrine disruptor that can cause major health problems Soy milk, for instance, is made from processed soybeans, which have been shown in their unfermented state to cause endocrine disruption, especially in men. More recent research has linked soy consumption to infertility and other reproductive problems.

Genetic engineering is also problematic with regards to soy milk, as the vast majority of conventional soybeans grown in the U.S. have been modified to resist Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. Soy crops are heavily sprayed with the chemical cocktail, which contains glyphosate, and residues end up making their way into the beans, which are then turned into liquid.

Soy and other milk alternatives often contain toxic carrageenan, which may cause cancer

In order to make the liquid palatable in a way that resembles actual dairy milk, companies often add fillers like carrageenan, a thickening compound derived from seaweed that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies as a potential human carcinogen. IARC is part of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Carrageenan is also highly inflammatory to the digestive tract. Though extracted from natural seaweed, carrageenan has repeatedly been shown to cause intestinal lesions, ulcerations, and even malignant tumors, which is why many cutting-edge health experts recommend against its consumption.

Milk alternatives contain all sorts of synthetic vitamins, some of which are toxic Then, there is the laundry list of synthetic vitamin chemicals added to milk alternatives that, in most cases, are not even digestible.

Vitamin A palmitate, for instance, is a common additive that might make a milk alternative product appear healthy, but that the body cannot use. The same is true of vitamin D2, a form of vitamin D that is actually toxic to the body.

“When synthetic, or incomplete vitamins are introduced into the body, the body attempts to ‘build’ a complete vitamin

complex by adding the missing factors that it knows should be there, specifically minerals and other vitamin co-factors,” explains the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) about the nature of synthetic vitamins.

“This “building” process depletes the body’s nutritional reserves, creating an overall deficiency.”

Stick with clean milk alternatives or just make your own at home Soy milk isn’t the only milk alternative that contains carrageenan, fake vitamins, and other synthetic additives. A majority of commercial hemp, rice, almond, and coconut milk products contain these ingredients, which is why it is critical to carefully read labels and only consume the cleanest products available.

As far as rice milk is concerned, there is the added threat of arsenic poisoning, as many rice products contain trace or higher levels of this and other heavy metals.

The Natural News Forensic Food lab, in fact, uncovered the presence of arsenic in almost every rice product available on the market today, so choosing a milk alternative other than rice is probably your best option.

Germany seeks ban on GMOs to protect its citizens and environment There is good news from the anti-GMO battlefront in Europe: Germany has announced that it will seek to ban the import of GM seeds and prohibit the cultivation of GM crops in the European Union’s largest economy.

German Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt has stated that he intends to make use of the EU’s “opt-out” policy to ensure that the country remains free of GMO crop cultivation in an effort to protect its citizens and environment from the consequences of the Frankenfood industry.

“Resistance from all sides” Ministry spokesman Christian Fronczak said: The German government is clear in that it seeks a nationwide cultivation ban. There’s resistance from all sides, from the public to the farmers.

Individual regions in the country have until September 11 to decide whether or not they want to participate in the ban.

The German government will then have until October 3 to inform the EU of its decision regarding the “opt-out” rule.

Scotland leads the fight The announcement comes on the heels of Scotland’s decision to ban GMOs within its own borders.

After the German announcement, Scottish National Party minister Rob Gibson said: Like Scotland, the German Government recognises the importance of protecting its food and drink sector and keeping its environ-

ment clean and green... The German decision shows that Scotland is now also leading Europe on GM crops.

Lisa Archer of the non-profit environmental organization Friends of the Earth said: Germany has committed a true act of food democracy by listening to the majority of its citizens that oppose GMO cultivation and support more sustainable, resilient organic food production that doesn’t perpetuate the overuse of toxic herbicides. We are hopeful that more members of the EU will follow suit and that the U.S. Congress will protect our basic right to know what we are feeding our families by requiring mandatory GMO labeling.

The new opt-out legislation passed in Europe has given member states a powerful tool for opposing and banning GMOs in individual countries. Now that these two EU nations have announced their intentions to implement the ban, other member states could be inspired to follow suit.

Pro-GMO propaganda has failed It is clear that despite the massive efforts on the part of Monsanto and other biotech giants to spread their influence throughout the world, grassroots efforts on the part of the public are successfully influencing government officials to stand up against the GMO industry.

This is an encouraging trend and it signals the failure of Monsanto and companies like it to convince the populace that

their techniques and methods are safe. This is despite the millions of dollars spent by the GMO industry to influence governments and sway public opinion throughout the world.

Sadly, there are still those in the media who continue to be compromised by the industry’s influence and keep spouting the pro-GMO propaganda. An article in the Wall Street Journal titled “Germany Versus Science” typifies the sold-out mainstream media’s take on the subject.

The WSJ piece states: Neither environmentalists nor German politicians have come up with a justification for Berlin’s looming ban other than, well, because. Supporters cheer the move as an expression of “food democracy” in a country where opposition to GMOs is widespread and the government faced intense pressure to ban them.

Since a scientific basis for such a ban doesn’t exist, organizations such as Friends of the Earth Germany now resort to promoting “organic” food as an alternative to GMO crops that they say increase pesticide use and endanger human health.

It’s hard to imagine a more misleading and downright farcical statement on the part of the Wall Street Journal. Putting the term “organic” in quotes and calling it an “alternative” to GMOs is an insult to any sane person’s intelligence - as if GMOs are the standard and organic food is some sort of weird alternative.

Eating more spicy foods decreases your risk of early death by 14% You may want to spice things up in your life, and no, we’re not talking about whispering sweet nothings between the sheets. According to an international team of researchers led by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, eating spicy foods may be the key to longevity. They found that eating such foods on a regular basis can help prevent people from dying prematurely by 14 percent.

While a variety of spicy foods are excellent, one in particular caught their attention.

It was noted that consumption of fresh chili pepper, compared to other spicy foods, was most effective in providing people with a lower risk of dying from cancer, ischemic heart disease and diabetes. It’s explained that fresh chili pepper’s combination of powerful ingredients are responsible for such health-boosting benefits.

Study: fresh chili pepper best spicy food to help reduce risk of early death “Compared with non-fresh spicy foods such as dried chilli pepper, chilli sauce or chilli oil,” says Lu Qi, associate professor at Har-

vard School of Public Health, “fresh chilli pepper is richer in bioactive ingredients, including capsaicin, vitamin C, and other nutrients such as vitamin A, K, and B6 and potassium.”

To conduct the study, the experts from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences assessed nearly 490,000 participants from the China Kadoorie Biobank. All individuals responded to a questionnaire in which they answered questions pertaining to physical measurements, general health and consumption of red meats, spicy foods, vegetables and alcohol. For example, once such question went as follows: “During the past month, about how often did you eat hot spicy foods?” Respondents selected from these options: never or almost never, only occasionally, 1 or 2 days a week, 3 to 5 days a week, or 6 or 7 days a week. Those who chose from the last three options were then directed to answer questions about the kinds of spices used, and involved choices such as fresh chilli pepper, dried chilli pepper and chilli oil.

Regular consumption of spicy foods essential After a follow-up that averaged approximately seven years, 20,224 deaths were noted. Analysis of these people led to the finding that compared to those who ingested spicy foods less than once weekly, people who ate such foods one or two days per week had a 10 percent reduced risk of death. More impressive however, was the discovery that those who enjoyed spicy foods nearly every other day were at a 14 percent lowered risk of death compared to those who ate them less than once a week.

The findings were published in BMJ in an article titled, “Consumption of spicy foods and total and cause specific mortality: population based cohort study.” It begins by detailing use of spices throughout history as a way to enhance flavor, preserve food and change coloring. It then delves into the demographic and health information of the participants as well as methods of analysis, ultimately concluding the following:

In this large prospective study, we observed an inverse association between consumption of spicy foods and total mortality, after adjusting for potential confounders.

Compared with those who ate spicy foods less than once a week, those who consumed spicy foods almost every day had a 14% lower risk of death. Inverse associations were also observed for deaths due to cancer, ischemic heart diseases, and respiratory diseases. The associations were consistent in men and women.

It’s also noted that this “...study is the first to analyze the association between daily consumption of spicy foods and mortality in a prospective cohort.”

Consider adding more spicy foods to your meals on a regular basis. They intensify flavors of other foods, making dishes even more enjoyable. Add to this the finding that such foods play a role in preventing an early death, and it’s a food addition well worth exploring.

Hate to exercise? Vitamin C supplements can mimic some benefits of exercise, such as boosting heart health in obese people One of the most common treatment recommendations for people who are overweight is that they get some form of exercise daily.

However, studies have shown that fewer than half of those who are diagnosed as obese actually follow this advice.

Now, the obese and exercise-averse have a new weapon in their arsenal: vitamin C supplementation.

The Los Angeles Times reports that overweight and obese people who take a high dose of Vitamin C supplementation daily can get some of the same cardiovascular benefits of exercise without having to work out, according to new research.

In a small trial involving sedentary adults who were obese or overweight, participants who took 500 milligrams of Vitamin C daily saw equal improvement in blood vessel tone – a principle measurement of heart health – as those who engaged in a three-month campaign of brisk walking five to seven times per week did, according to researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Their results were presented recently in Atlanta at the American Physiological Society’s annual meeting, but they have not

yet been published in a peer-reviewed science or medical journal so they are considered preliminary.

Both groups showed similar results The Los Angeles Times further reported: The study’s small size — 15 subjects got the walking treatment, while 20 took the Vitamin C supplements — may also limit the uptake of its findings by public health officials, who have struggled, with limited success, to get sedentary Americans off the couch.

Some 4 in 10 American adults are thought to be entirely sedentary.

However, the study’s invasive measures of “endothelial function” – the ability of blood vessels to dilate and contract as necessary – provided evidence that the benefits of low-level aerobic exercise and Vitamin C were significant.

At the outset of the limited clinical trial, all of the study’s participants were overweight or obese as well as sedentary. All of them also showed levels of vascular tone that were impaired.

“In a pattern typical for overweight and obese adults who don’t get much exer-

cise, their blood vessels did not respond to experimental conditions with the strength and suppleness seen in normal, healthy adults,” the Times reported.

Poor vascular tone can lead to several effects that are harmful to health, including inflammation and changes in the blood that can lead to clot formations. Therefore, the study’s subjects were all at increased risk of developing high blood pressure, suffering strokes or having heart attacks.

Researchers noted that the average body mass index of those who exercised was 29.3, while the average BMI of those who took the Vitamin C was 31.3. A BMI that is between 25 and 29 is considered overweight; obesity is diagnosed for BMIs above 30. During the study’s three-month duration, none of the subjects lost any weight.

During the research period, subjects in both groups were able to drive their vascular tone back into healthy territory. However, the Vitamin C group did so without having to do any exercise at all.

Not an exercise pill Caitlin Dow, the study’s lead author, said the results could be substantial for people who

might be unable to exercise due to injury or other physical limitations.

“This is not ‘the exercise pill,’” said Dow, a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Colorado who studies nutrition and vascular biology.

She further emphasized that people who engage in regular physical activity generally have more positive effects than those who simply take Vitamin C, such as the lowering of “bad” cholesterol, improvements in metabolic function, and a boost to mood and cognitive function. Those who can hit the gym or fit in a good walk should certainly do so.

Nevertheless, taking a supplement to help improve vessel function can help anyone who is unable to engage in physical activity, Dow said.

“If we can improve different measures of risk for disease without changing weight, it takes a little bit of the pressure off some people,” she said. While Vitamin C “certainly isn’t a new cure,” Dow added, “it’s important to know what other lifestyle changes we can offer people who can’t exercise.”

Health Tips Back to school means back to germ laden classrooms. This week I had a number of parents in my office who were hit hard with viruses brought home by their little ones.

A parent’s best immune defense is keeping their children healthy. Let’s discuss some tips to prevent the back to school sniffles.

Probiotics, friendly bacteria, have been shown in the research to reduce the number of upper respiratory tract infections,

the duration of the infection and the need to use anti-biotics. Probiotics were also able to reduce the number of absentee days from school. Good news for working parents.

In order to prevent upper respiratory tract infections a probiotic powder is best.

A capsule doesn’t disintegrate until reaching the stomach or small intestine. When you use a liquid or powdered probiotic the good bacteria can begin to work right in the mouth, where most common colds begin. Supplement companies will often make a form of their probiotic in a powdered form. If you are not sensitive to dairy you can drink kefir, a European yogurt drink with a high number of probiotics. You can find kefir at any grocery store.

Research has shown that, similarly to probiotics, zinc can reduce the number of days your child will be home sick from school. Even if not taken every day, taking zinc within 24 hours of the first sign of ill-

ness you can shorten the duration of your cold. Zinc comes in yummy lozenges and gummies that even picky eaters will like.

Vitamin D supplementation is important for overall immune function. Taking a supplement has only been shown to help the common cold if you are deficient in this vitamin. However, research has shown approximately 32% of Canadians are deficient in vitamin D, with high numbers seen in people of color. Both children and adults alike should be getting at least between 8001000 international units of vitamin D daily.

Cheap, easy and effective, vitamin D is on the top of every naturopathic doctors list of favorite supplements.

Always remember washing hands and hygiene are the best way to stop the spread of infection. But if you find your family constantly battling runny noses and sore throats give these tips a try.

Dental care should start even before the teeth appear in the mouth by cleaning the baby’s gums, cheeks, lips and tongue with a clean gauze or wash cloth. After the teeth erupt you can start using a baby toothbrush with a tiny amount of fluoridated toothpaste.

If you notice anything unusual in the mouth consult with your dentist without hesitation.

Otherwise take your toddler for his or her dental checkup by age three.

Your dentist, hygienist, or designated staff member will provide the necessary dental education and demonstrate the best

brushing and flossing techniques. Baby teeth are very important and every effort should be taken to preserve them just as if they were adult teeth. The child needs them for good nutrition and also to help guide the adult teeth into the proper place into the mouth.

At an early age the dentist can evaluate the jaws in relation to growth patterns.

A determination can be made as to whether the jaws are developing normally so as to provide sufficient space for the tongue so the airway space is not compromised. Tonsils and uvula should be checked to determine if they are inflamed and enlarged. Abnormalities and deformities if treated early in life will significantly reduce snoring, sleep apnea, headaches, TMD, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and other medical conditions.

You’ll be happier with what you see in the mirror, as well as improve your mental wellbeing.

One thing that many people seem to overlook when trying to find a way to lose weight is to see their doctor or health professional first. Asking your health professional that has knowledge of your health if you have any limitations or what is safe for you to do is a great place to start. They can

go over your health history and suggest what type of diet or exercise program may benefit you and how quickly you should start.

Many people who are overweight start an exercise and diet program, without knowing if it’s the best way to lose those extra pounds. There are also many ways to help get your family involved with your new weight loss plan. It’s much easier to stick to a plan if it involves the entire family. By getting your entire family involved you are much more likely to stick to your plan as you will have the support and encouragement from them. You can set reasonable goals for everyone and celebrate when you each reach a milestone, no matter how small.

Start with a sensible healthy eating plan and good advice from your health professional. With realistic weight loss targets you can move towards and achieve your goals and become a lighter and healthier you.

Health Care This is another fall cleaning segment. I’m always asked about the topic of Blood Testing.

For many the thought of going to the Doctors without symptoms of illness and just asking for blood work seems unnecessary, but the fact of the matter is Blood Testing is the easiest way to keep up with your health status.

Annual blood testing at the least, is the most important step you can take to prevent life-threatening diseases. With blood test results in hand, you can catch critical changes in your body before they manifest diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes or worse. Having the proper blood tests

can empower you to enact a science-based disease-prevention program that could add decades of healthy life.

Sadly, most annual medical checkups involve the physician ordering only routine blood tests, if blood tests are ordered at all. If you have conditions that have been diagnosed follow up more routinely with blood test.

Typical routine blood tests include the complete blood count, also called CBC, to measure your red and white blood cell numbers as well as hemoglobin and other numbers. This test can uncover anemia, infection, and even cancer of the blood.

Another common blood test is the basic metabolic panel to check your heart, kidney and liver function by looking at your blood glucose, calcium, and electrolyte levels. And to check for heart disease risk, you may have a lipoprotein panel that measures levels of fats in your blood, like good cholesterol (HDL), bad cholesterol (LDL), and triglycerides.

FAST FACTS Unless you ask, you might not find out what

your blood test results really mean for your health.

False-negative and false-positive test results can happen, so be prepared to follow-up and be sure of your health status.

Even if test results seem normal, it’s a good practice to discuss them with your healthcare provide.

Far too often, this blood work does not even test for important markers of disease risk. The consequences of failing to analyze blood for proven markers of disease risk are needless disability and death. Blood tests have benefits that go far beyond disease prevention. For example, by monitoring levels of sex hormones, you can take decisive steps to enhance your quality of life, perhaps by correcting a depressive mental state, erectile dysfunction, abdominal obesity, or by improving your memory and energy levels.

Doctors often skip the good news Your doctor should discuss all blood test results with you. But often the rule is, “No news is good news.” Make it a point to follow up. Results differ for women and men

You may remember years ago, many children passed Common Entrance for prestige high schools , came out with good CXC grades both “O” and “A” levels but didn’t end up going to University due to their parents not having enough money.

This left many teenagers with broken dreams as they went out into the working world at 17 or 18 to either fend for themselves or to raise money helping their own parents and siblings.

Today’s world is slightly different as we have two options: Either save from early or apply for an OSAP loan. Both have the element of interest and we will examine each of them.

Let’s take the example: those who are saving in an Education Savings Plan.

The effort to set aside a small

amount of money each month from the time your child is young is an easy road if you would like to provide a University education for him or her.

If you save 100 dollars per month for seventeen years regularly, you would have made a total contribution of $20,400.

If this money was invested in a very conservative investment and you earned an average of 3% over the period you would have amassed a total of $26,569.27 What would have been the figure had you invested an earned an average of 6%? Well your child’s education fund would now be sitting at $35,323.11 And if you were lucky enough to have earned an average of 9% the amassed total would have been $47,981.83. This is more than double what you have invested!

As you can see there is a great disparity between the figures, even though the contribution amount did not change, the returns are very different. The reason is what some gurus call the Eighth Wonder of the World, the magic of compound interest.

Due to the nature of compound interest it allows money to multiply faster when interest rates are higher and slower when interests are lower. Therefore it is extremely important that when you are saving for your child’s education, you research and discuss thoroughly what investments you are in so as to maximize your efforts and without taking on more risk than you should.

By the same token, your OSAP loan has compound interest built into it, therefore when you have graduated and are ready to repay your loan you will find yourself obviously paying more than you borrowed. In addition, many new graduates are quite stressed out if they don’t find jobs quick enough as they have the burden of repayments at that time.

So while the children are back at school learning, parents need to start saving please.

Child support for adult children - The case for Post-Secondary Educatioion Valerie Dye

Legal Matters Neither the Federal Divorce Act nor the provincial Family Law Act restricts the payment of child support to minor children. While the languages used in each Acts is different they both suggest that a payor may be required to pay support for children who are adults.

With regard to the Divorce Act, which applies to a child born to spouses who are married or who have gone through a divorce, the eligibility for support is based upon the inability of the adult child to withdraw from the parent’s charge. While such inability may stem from the child’s disability or other illness, most instances of claim for support arise from the fact that the child is attending post-secondary education. While the issue of post-secondary education is not specifically mentioned in the Divorce Act it is mentioned in the Family Law Act, which states that: 1. ‘Every parent has an obligation to provide support for his or her unmarried child who is a minor or is enrolled in a full time program of education, to the extent that the parent is capable of doing so’.

2. The obligation under subsection (1) does not extend to a child who is sixteen years of age or older and has withdrawn from parental control.

As stated in the 2014 case of Meyer v Content, the child must be unable to withdraw from parental control by virtue of his financial or emo-

tional dependence on one or both parents. In making its assessment the Court will have to determine whether the child is truly dependent on the parents and would not be able to pursue his education without the assistance of one or both parents. The fact that the child is still attending school may not be enough to justify continued support beyond the age of majority.

In the 2012 Ontario Superior case of Menegaldo v Menegaldo the court set out twelve factors to help determine whether or not an adult child should receive support for post secondary education. Those factors are summarised as follows: (a) Enrollment in full time education,(b) ability to find part time work, (c)ability to obtain student loans,(c) whether the child has a reasonable and beneficial education and career plan or is simply attending school because he/she has nothing else to do,(d) the child’s academic performance,(e) the age, qualification and experience of the child, (f) what plans were made by the parents for the education of the child, (g) the means of the parents , (h) the willingness of the child to remain accountable to the parents with regard to their education.

Where a child refuses to maintain a relationship with a parent this may be an indication that the child is able to withdraw from parental charge and may not be in need of financial support from the parents.

All of these factors will not necessarily apply in every case. These are simply factors to be considered by the court. For instance while the court may not compel a child to obtain student loans, it has been decided in some cases that a child should make some contribution toward a portion of their own post-secondary education. Further, a parent who continues to pay child support for a child enrolled in postsecondary education is entitled to obtain details of the academic programme and of the child’s performance on the programme.

The Monsanto of traffic, 407 ETR, Ferrovial, Cintra, et al Tammy Flores

407ETR Matters When you say the name Monsanto, it`s synonymously recognized as a corporation aimed to take over our most valuable resource. OUR FOOD!!! May 23rd, 2015 the world marched against this corporate takeover and pleaded with world governments to reign in this corporation. Corporate subsidies and political favoritism is at the root of Monsanto`s monopoly over the world`s food supply. Finally, governments the world over are starting to listen to the outcry of farmers and consumers. So far about 64 nations have signed on to curb Monsanto`s march by making them label genetically modified foods. This gives the consumer more power to choose with their wallets what they will support.

407 ETR`s parent company Ferrovial IS the Monsanto of our limited resources for travel options. We have been pleading with our leaders to reign in 407 ETR by better regulating the company’s Plate Denial provision. So far our pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Ferrovial started their march for world domination in 1998 when they signed their first deal for an open access highway, traffic management system here in Ontario, Canada known as 407 ETR. Leaving in the wake of their journey to date is many corporate bankruptcies, questionable business practices, beaten consumers and a bewildered populace. How can our governments support taking our very limited resource, land put aside for public use, land in most cases taxpayers already paid for, off the books, so that a private corporation can control what segment of the population get to use that land? How can our governments support a traffic management system that NEEDS congestion to be viable? It’s nonsensical! Traffic planning is no longer about moving people; it’s about how to monetize travel to make a buck. If you can’t pay, you won’t get to play.

Citizens in Texas and North Carolina, USA and Ontario, Canada have started to shed light on the problems having a corporation control our travel invites. Their movements, TURF, Exit 28 Ridiculousness and Stop the 407 ETR’s Abuse of Power are gaining momentum.

September 17th, 2015 saw a conference on The Future of the Car/Transport Futures that bundles Ferrovial`s traffic management solution in with car sharing services, Uber, bike paths, carpool lots, high-speed busses and LRTs. The spin is being painted that congestion pricing, like 407 ETR’s highway, is just another option to travel. But really, it’s about a new economy that some misguided leaders think will make the planet more environmentally sound.

Attending the conference were politicians like Ontario’s Minister of Trans-

portation, Steven DelDuca and bureaucrats like Stephen Buckley, General Manager of Transportation Services for the City of Toronto. Ferrovial’s lobbying efforts are working and the public for the most part remains in the dark as to what is about to be decided by our leaders that are supposed to have our best interests at heart. You think life is expensive now? You haven’t seen anything yet. If the government of Ontario continues to buy into Ferrovial’s spin, you will see tolls on all major highways. Your travel costs to get to work will cost you another $400/ month. Do you think your boss will give you a raise to pay for it? If you don’t pay the toll, your commute time will increase because these tolls will do nothing to alleviate traffic congestion. It will only make congestion worse.

It’s like they are saying, it doesn’t matter how much money you sink into R & D, there is no solution for congestion so we might as well let companies like Ferrovial make a buck. It makes the economy look like it opened a new viable sector. A win, win situation right?

407 ETR has the government of Ontario`s backing. To the public, the government of Ontario says that their hands are tied with respects to the company`s billing nightmare. They say there is nothing they can do to interfere with a private corporation`s business because of the deal made by the previous administration. But in the shadows, this current administration is doing back room deals with 407 ETR and silently supports the business model the company is pushing to open up on other road ways.

In the Supreme Court of Canada case that took place January 2015, the government of Ontario also supported the company`s position on how it treats bankrupt people. The government of Ontario supports using Plate Denial as a means for this private corporation to collect money from bankrupt people. This contradicts the Federal Laws on bankruptcy, but the government of Ontario doesn’t seem to care. They want bankrupt people to pay this private corporation, 407 ETR, whatever the company says it is owed.

We all know the amounts the company says is owed changes from month to month because the company never stops adding interest or fees to the debt they claimed occurred, but never had to prove actually occurred to begin with. The government of Ontario doesn’t care about that and ignores their own Consumer Protection legislation in favor of the company`s behavior. The company must be doing exactly what the government wants or else it would intervene. They have given 407 ETR full power to treat consumer`s as they wish. Basically, not only does Ferrovial`s subsidiary, 407 ETR, get to play a game on our land, but they get to ignore the rules of the game and our leaders, change the rules of the game to allow them to play as they wish.

How long will it take for people take to the streets and March?

Land put aside for public use, should remain land put aside for public use.

Land is a very limited resource and should not be taken off the books to benefit a private corporation that will do absolutely nothing for the public but cause congestion and chaos.

A Better Tomorrow Hello friends, I hope that you have had a successful week so far. I am happy that I have been blessed with one more day on this earth. I want to encourage us all to take the time to be grateful for what we have and what we don’t have. Sometimes what we don’t have is a testament for what we need to accomplish.

For my readers who have been following this series, I have decided to take some time to speak openly and share with you information on Persuasive Development Disorders. These disorders run on a spectrum, each carrying their own challenges and treatments. I have chosen to focus on Autism, a disorder that has been largely misunderstood. Sharing information on this topic is important because it will clear up any misconceptions that one may have of individuals with Autism, as well as provide hope for parents who have children with Autism. So far, I have been able to share some information on Under-

standing Behaviors, which can be exhibited by a child with PDD, and Developing Communication Skills in children with PDD. This section will be tackling Teaching Play and Social Skills. The first part of this section focused on the importance of social skills and how to cultivate this when working with children with Autism.

I was able to go over the barriers to social interactions that these children may face as well as the four social skill areas that parents should work on developing.

This week, I will continue with this section and highlight the idea of play.

Many of us have lost the ability to play.

Play is important because both cognition and language are developed through play experiences. It allows for thinking and reasoning processes as well as assisting with effective language skill development. The first thing to understand is that communication and play are linked; play can be motivating and fosters the developing skills of a child. We have to identify and acknowledge the social development of the child we are working with. We have to be aware of the child’s current skills, including strengths and needs. Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten are the grades in which the ideas of play are introduced. Teaching a child who is able to socialize with their cohorts takes less time then working with a child who is Autis-

tic. With these children, play needs to be broken down into smaller steps. It must be taught in the natural environment and opportunities for practice must be available.

The most important type of play to teach children with Autism is parallel play. Parallel play is a form of play in which children play adjacent to each other, but do not try to influence one another’s behavior. Most parents will see this type of play after a child’s first birthday. Autistic children need to be coached on how to play parallel with other children. Parents are encouraged to create opportunities for peers to pair with children who have Autism. There is nothing stronger then peer reinforcement; peers are able to model play behavior in a way that adults cannot.

Peer play can also allow for incidental teaching. Cowan and Allen (2007) wrote an article on incidental teaching which explains it as a tool of Applied Behavioral Analysis in which a desired behavior is taught using behavioral techniques in the course of day to day experience and interaction. When playing with peers, a child with Autism has an advantage because they are able to pick up on social cues, rules, other feelings and perceptions during their play. During play, there are many teachable moments that would not otherwise be captured. Parents can see this when they first see their child

sharing, or taking turns. Sometimes it is best to teach about a social situation as it is occurring; this makes it authentic and if done right a positive experience for everyone involved.

For ideal play experiences, the teaching environment must be set up with limited distractions; it must include motivating items and themes, and the child must be prepared for their experience. We have to remember that these children do not see the world like we do. There are many different ways that we can teach play skills. The last part to the social skill section will go over these in detail. I will highlight these briefly and pick back up on this in the next article. The strategies that have been used to teach children play are: Social Narratives, Comic Strip Conversations, Play dates and Video Modelling. A breakdown of how to use the strategies will hopefully give parents some material that they can use to assist their children.

Professional Development Ok…we have come to part three of this series. Please refer the last two issues of the Toronto Caribbean in order to read the information leading up to this final piece of the puzzle. In part one of this series, I started sharing methods of increasing your income. Going from either unemployed or an unsatisfied employee to becoming an entrepreneur /independent business owner or sales person. In part two, I gave you some practical ideas on different enterprises and opportunities that are available.

The key to your prosperity is “look for a problem to solve”. In this world of ours whoever solves the biggest problem gets the biggest paycheck.

That’s the golden rule.

I’ve given you some ideas that

range from ZERO cost, to minimal cost to get started in creating and generating an income for yourself. Whether it be working for a direct sales company where they will support and train you, or a networking marketing business where for a nominal cost you can be taught how to build a business for yourself. I have also shared basic ideas such as dog walkers, personal shoppers, lawn cutting and car washing.

There are an abundance of opportunities in online marketing and sales as well. The question is…will you take the time to develop a new skill in order to either start generating income, supplement your income while you are working on your dream, or create a business that could potentially make you rich beyond your wildest dreams?

If you’re unemployed there is no reason for you to be unemployed beyond this week because I have given you solutions that you can implement right now. At the end of the day, it’s up to you on what you are going to do. Remember that “no decision is a decision”. If you’re sitting on the couch and not made a decision to move forward then you have made the decision not to work. You’ve

made a decision to not prosper yourself. You’ve made a decision to choose poverty. That’s a choice. However you want to justify it and color it, the bottom line is, there’s only two ways to generate income, people at work and money at work. If you’re not at work and your money is not working for you, you’ve made the choice of poverty.

I realize that it may be uncomfortable to try something new. Sometimes we have to get UNCOMFORTABLE in order to ultimately live COMFORTABLY. I personally like to earn while I learn. If I can work with a company and learn on their dime, why not?? That’s how I learned. Through my sales, I was going door to door and I earned while I learned. I wasn’t the best when I first started. I remember my first day, after seeing my manager Richard with his $78k cheques a week as a manager and I had made $250. I had a lot to learn about how to effectively convey my ideas and get people emotionally involved so they would want to take advantage of what I had to offer. Aka “sell”. It’s a skill I had to learn. If you learn the skill of sales, you will never starve. If you can sell one thing you can sell anything else because

the principles are the same. The reason I focus on sales a lot is because I believe that it is an invaluable skill to have. If all else fails, there’s always sales. I think it’s a great fallback. When I started out my career as a speaker/coach, I told myself I would give it all I had because if for whatever reason my coaching or speaking didn’t resonate with people, I could always go back to sales. A lot of people say it’s good to have a degree for a backup, I agree with that in certain respects, but I think the best thing to have is a skill that is needed marketplace immediately. If you have a skill that is absolutely needed right now in the market place, life is good for you.

You’ve got to use your imagination in terms of going out and creating things. If you need more help in getting started, I offer seminars that teach people how to monetize their passions.
