DR. ANDREA DAVIS
a better world for all
Black female educators have historically played a critical role in shaping the education system in the United States and right here in Canada. Despite facing systemic obstacles such as racism, sexism, and discrimination, Black female educators have persisted in advocating for equitable and accessible education for all students.
Our Woman Empowered has made significant contributions in areas such as: curriculum development, teaching practices, and educational leadership. She has helped to challenge traditional models of education and promote culturally responsive teaching that values and incorporates the diverse experiences of all students.
Dr. Andrea Davis has excelled on many levels in the academic world of one of Canada’s largest universities, most notably as a Professor in the Department of Humanities, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at York University where she has tenured since July 2022.
Prior to that, she was an Associate Professor, and played an active role in the development of the Faculty Anti-Black Racism Strategy where she provided leadership in an advisory role. Her ground-breaking and revolutionary scholarly work is grounded within an anti-racist feminist framework that seeks answers to questions of race and gender through an analysis of the literary and cultural production of Black women.
Professor Davis is the author of two books. The first book, “Horizon, Sea. Sound: Caribbean and Africa Women’s Cultural Critiques of Nation,” was launched on April 21st, 2022, at Wychwood Barnes and published by Northwestern University Press.
The second provocative book imagines new reciprocal relationships among Black, Indigenous, and other racialized women, and offers
new reflections on the relationships between the Caribbean and Canada.
Dr. Davis has received widespread accolades and praise for the Black Canadian Studies Certificate, which she established and coordinated. She describes it as “A standalone, direct entry option for anyone wishing to come back to university for a year.”
She serves as co-editor of the Journal of Canadian Studies and was the former Chair of the Department of Humanities and academic colleague on the Council of Ontario Universities. In addition, she was the former interim director of the Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean ( CERLAC). She earned her doctorate in English Language and Literature at York University, her thesis was, “Hegemony of the Spirit: Black Women’s Diasporic “Counterculture of Modernity in Selected African Caribbean and African American Writing.”
In an article for the online York University magazine that describes the upcoming Congress 2023 she reflects on the importance of the theme, “Reckonings and Re-imaginings” with respect to how it forces us to think deeply, especially after George Floyd’s death in 2021. The announcement of York University hosting Congress 2023 and Dr Davis’s role was issued in a press release on November 9th, 2021, by Rhonda Lenton, President and Vice-Chancellor of the university.
She states, “We cannot simply pretend that our world has not been shaken - if not altered - in some fundamental way by the events of the last three years. I don’t think York could host a Congress that didn’t attempt to address some of these questions. Universities, their students and graduates, writers and thinkers have a responsibility to attend these lessons, to decipher what they have taught us,
and to offer our societies a language, a grammar, for thinking through and beyond the crises of our times.”
Congress 2023 will take place between May 27th, 2023 to June 2nd, 2023 at York’s Keele and Glendon campuses, and will have more than 10,000 scholars, graduate students and practitioners in the humanities and social science, and participants from 67 academic disciplines.
She would like each attendee at Congress 2023 to think deeply about what has been learned since that fateful event in 2021 and what it means in a social, political and historical sense.
She emphasizes, “What might it mean for us to commit to knowing and caring for each other across our differences, understanding that the world we want to live in tomorrow is dependent on the action we take together.”
It is hoped that the congress will help to amplify York University Academic Plan 2020- 2025 with six priorities that focus on an aspect of positive change.
This is a blueprint for action that will reflect the university’s involvement in incorporating the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Great days are ahead for York University, and our world is brighter because of great minds like that of Dr. Andrea Davis.
World Governments using psychology to manipulate; Introducing the Delphi Method
proposed in the article is how should we respond when a survey has been rigged?
I was curious, what was the Delphi Method, and is it possible that this technique had been used on unsuspecting members of society before? The only way to get answers to these questions was to do a little more research and get a full understanding about what we were dealing with.
in fields such as: technology forecasting, public policy, and strategic planning.
Deliberate framing of questions
Unfortunately, psychology, like any other tool, or field of study, can be misused to cause harm and over the last few years, we as a global community, have seen the misuse of psychological techniques to control and manipulate the way that we think. I say that we have seen, but unfortunately, there are many of us who have no idea that it is happening, and that is normal, because how it is done is tactful, sneaky, and if you are not aware, you have no idea that it is happening.
Last week, a report was put out by The Expose titled, “UK government uses Delphi method to manipulate outcome of public consultations,” and in this article they shared that until June 7th, 2023, the Bank of England is inviting responses to a proposal for a retail central bank digital currency (“CBDC”) – a so-called “digital pound.” According to the author of the article, the survey is rigged. The questions are designed so that the person taking the survey will agree with their basic premises – there are no options to object to the implementation of CBDCs. The final question
The Delphi method is a structured communication technique used to obtain and aggregate expert opinions in order to make informed decisions, or forecasts about a particular topic. It was developed in the 1950s by RAND Corporation as a way to forecast technological advancements.
The process typically involves a group of experts who are asked to answer a series of questionnaires, with each subsequent questionnaire building upon the responses from the previous one. In between questionnaires, the responses are summarized and shared with the group to help them refine their opinions. This iterative process continues until the group reaches a consensus or until the desired level of information is obtained.
The Delphi method is particularly useful when there is a lack of reliable data, or when the topic being studied is complex or uncertain. By aggregating the opinions of a diverse group of experts, the method can help identify trends and potential outcomes that may not have been apparent otherwise. It is commonly used
I discovered that one danger of the Delphi method is that it can be susceptible to groupthink. Groupthink occurs when individuals in a group prioritize conformity and consensus over critical thinking and independent judgment. This can lead to a lack of diverse perspectives and a failure to consider alternative viewpoints, which can result in flawed decision-making.
Another potential danger of the Delphi method is that it can be subject to manipulation by those in power. The method relies heavily on the facilitator, or leader of the group to set the agenda and frame the questions being asked. This gives the leader a significant amount of control over the direction of the conversation and the outcomes that are produced.
If the leader has a vested interest in a particular outcome or agenda, they may manipulate the process to achieve their desired outcome, potentially at the expense of the group’s collective judgment.
Here are some ways in which the Delphi method could be manipulated:
Selective inclusion of experts
Those in power could selectively include or exclude certain experts based on their views or opinions on the issue at hand. This could result in a biased outcome that favors the views of those in power.
The questions asked in the Delphi process could be framed in a way that favors a particular viewpoint or solution. For instance, a question could be worded in a way that assumes a certain outcome or solution.
Manipulation of feedback
Those in power could manipulate the feedback given to experts between rounds to influence their opinions or sway the results in their favor.
Misuse of anonymity
The anonymity of the Delphi process could be used to hide the identity of those in power who may be manipulating the process. This could also result in experts being more likely to conform to the opinions of those in power.
Disregard for expert opinions
Those in power could choose to ignore the results of the Delphi process if they do not align with their own views or interests. When there is an agenda being pushed, we as a people have to be mindful of what is being presented to us. Unfortunately, we live in a time where the agenda being pushed are by those who remain in the shadows. The decisions that we are being tricked into believing are not ours and we don’t even know it; well maybe now that we know what the Delphi process is, we can be cognizant when we are doing surveys. Stay aware people! Stay aware!

Canadians, we are told that we live in a democratic country that embraces inclusion and equality and facilitates an environment that respects human rights and fundamental freedoms. In this projected system, we the people are allowed to exercise free will. This includes decisions that affect our lives. We are told that democracy leads to:
• a better quality of life
• a more equitable, gender equal and inclusive society
• greater security and stability nationally and globally
• a path to prosperity
According to their own website Canada is advancing an inclusive approach to democracy. This includes:
• women in all their diversity
• young people
• vulnerable and marginalized groups Hmmm! It is incredible to me how blatantly hypocritical the Canadian government is, and the only reason that they don’t get
called out, is because we are not made aware of the foolishness. An exclusive approach to democracy; let’s see how they have been doing with that.
Founded in 1964, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association is a national human rights organization committed to defending the rights, dignity, safety, and freedoms of all people in Canada. In 2021, the CCLA called on the Liberal Party of Canada to cease and desist the use of facial fingerprinting for its nomination process.
“By using it for the purposes of nominating candidates for federal election, the Liberal Party of Canada is tacitly endorsing an unreliable, racist technology,” said Michael Bryant, Executive Director of the CCLA.
“Besides its impact on the privacy rights of those participating in the process, the Liberal Party’s use of the controversial technology takes unfair advantage of its exemption from Canadian privacy laws, and sends the wrong message to municipal, provincial and federal election officials that this technology is ready for prime time.”
Facial recognition technology (facial fingerprinting); for nomination processes in our democratic country. Canadian government, tell us more about this inclusive approach to democracy.
Let’s start with this; facial fingerprinting, or facial recognition technology is highly contested in Canada, and the Liberal Party of Canada utilizes the technology in its candidate nomination process.
Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) has emerged as a powerful tool of significant interest to both law enforcement
and commercial entities. Used responsibly and in the right circumstances, it has the potential to offer great benefits to society. For instance, it can support national security objectives, assist police in solving crime or help authorities find missing persons.
The technology scales easily, costs relatively little to use, and can be deployed as an add-on to existing surveillance infrastructure, which might explain its growing appeal in Canada and abroad.
At the same time, facial recognition can be a highly invasive surveillance technology, and studies have shown that the technology and algorithms have a large racial bias, has the potential to erode privacy and undermine freedoms and human rights such as free expression and peaceful assembly.
In 2021, CCLA and other civil society organizations advocated for a moratorium or ban on this technology pending a critical pan-Canadian discussion.
“By using facial fingerprinting, the Liberal Party signals to municipalities and provinces that facial fingerprinting technology is adequate for voter ID purposes, tacitly endorsing a technology known for discriminatory treatment of Black faces, Indigenous faces and people of color. Adopting one of the most invasive, controversial technologies as part of a critical internal process is wrong,” Michael Bryant explained during the original advocacy stage in 2021.
Two years later, there has finally been a shift in this case. At the end of April this year, Tashi Alford-Duguid, Staff lawyer at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) made the following statement:
“The Liberal Party of Canada has just confirmed that it has stopped its use of facial recognition technology (FRT) for identification purposes in nomination races in BC, while being investigated by the province’s Information and Privacy Commissioner.
This investigation followed a June 2021 letter by the CCLA to the President of the party, demanding it cease its use of FRT. While the decision to stop use of FRT in BC is an important step, it also means that the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of BC will not have an opportunity to complete its investigation of potential abuses of FRT during political nominations.
We continue to call for the Liberal Party of Canada to cease its use of FRT in all their nominations across the country. Facial Recognition Technology raises serious concerns about invasions of privacy and reliability and is prone to considerable racial bias— which leads to discriminatory results.”
So, our government is okay with the utilization of a technology that has been researched, and continues to show racial bias?
The CCLA has renewed calls for a national moratorium on the use of facial recognition technology pending a critical pan-Canadian discussion about how this technology should be used. They are asking that all political parties at all levels across the country respect individuals’ rights to privacy, autonomy, and personal integrity, by not collecting, or using any person’s ‘facial fingerprint’.
So, our government is okay with the utilization of a technology that has been researched, and continues to show racial bias?
The UN raping children: Why does this ring a bell
MICHAEL THOMAS michael@carib101.com TC REPORTERWhen an organization that was supposed to be protecting the rights of children does a 360 and starts raping and molesting the same children it was supposed to shelter, we as a global community have a serious problem.
Such is the case when it comes to what is left of the UN aka the United Nations, and here is a quote to prove my point. “Sexual conduct involving persons below the domestically prescribed minimum age of consent to sex may be consensual in fact, if not in law.”
This is from the UN’s March report released by the United Nations. According to this organization, minors can now have sex with adults; it is their human right.
Let us look at the track record of
the UN from a sex-with-children point of view.
According to an AP Associated Press report, the UN placed Sri Lankan peacekeepers in Haiti who were doing everything except keeping the peace. Here is a report from a small girl who was raped repeatedly at the time in Haiti.
“I didn’t even have breasts,” said a girl, known as V01 — Victim No. 1. She told UN investigators that over the next three years, from ages 12 to 15, she had sex with nearly 50 peacekeepers, including a “Commandant” who gave her 75 cents. Sometimes she slept in UN trucks on the base, whose once-glamorous buildings were being overtaken by jungle.
An Associated Press investigation of UN missions during the past 12 years found nearly 2,000 allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation by peacekeepers and other personnel around the world.
More than 300 of the allegations involved children, the AP found, but only a small number of the alleged perpetrators served any jail time.
The UN, however, has no legal obligation to bring their soldiers to justice.
Very conveniently that is left for the contributing countries to enforce. Let that sink in for a moment. Kind of like the COVID injection, you are on your own.
In Haiti, at least 134 Sri Lankan peacekeepers exploited nine children in a sex ring from 2004 to 2007, according to an internal UN report obtained by the AP. In the wake of the report, 114 peacekeepers were sent home. None was ever imprisoned.
The UN has such a tarnished history abroad when it comes to child sex that one US senator, Sen. Bob Corker told AP quote, “If I heard that a U.N. peacekeeping mission was coming near my home in Chattanooga, I’d be on the first plane out of here to go back and protect my family.”
Corker recalled his disgust at hearing of the UN sexual abuse cases uncovered in the Central African Republic.
The United Nations, meanwhile, continued to send Sri Lankan peacekeepers to Haiti and elsewhere despite corroborating the child sex ring.
Now let’s move to someone who knows the UN inside out. Alex Newman is an international journalist, educator,
and author and his take on the UN in two words is “Not good.”
“UN troops were down in the Central African Republic raping children everywhere. Little kids: seven, eight, and nine were being raped by these disgusting pieces of human trash.”
Newman told his interviewer that when someone from inside the UN human rights office in Switzerland tried to report and stop what he learned was happening; he was fired and escorted out under armed guards. The UN for trying to expose them also demonized him. Are we seeing a pattern here?
Newman said, “There are decent people working at the UN, but at the highest levels when you get to the folks pulling the strings, what you find is seriously dark, seriously wicked people, but I am encouraged that there are still good people in there willing to blow the whistle, willing to speak out, willing to pass information to journalist and that is encouraging, that’s good news for all of us.”
I can go on, but that’s the child sex ring called the UN in a nutshell.

Is the health and safety of the global community being ignored by National and International Health Organizations?
radio and TV towers, satellites, communication, GPS, and 5G communications, self-driving automobiles. These are all sources of radiation that we encounter every day, and don’t really take the time to think about how this is affecting our bodies.
History of microwave generating equipment
floor apartment, a middle-aged, otherwise healthy, Swedish woman developed debilitating symptoms corresponding with radiofrequency/microwave syndrome.
Headache; dizziness and balance problems; cognitive dysfunction, including memory loss, confusion, and loss of focus; extreme fatigue; anxiety; cough; nose bleeding; and disorders of urinary function and the skin, including spontaneous bruising and skin eruptions.
I can imagine what it must be like reading such adverse symptoms at the start of an article, but I want you to take a moment and think about if recently you have been experiencing any of these symptoms. Really think about it, because what I am about to share with you might give you some answers as to why you might be feeling out of sorts lately.
With the rapid developments in wireless communication technologies, especially mobile phones, and the intensive use of these instruments by people of all ages, scientists are now focusing their attention on the human health effects of the radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emitted by these technologies.
While 2G, 3G, 4G, and 4.5G technologies use radiofrequency waves of 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz, the most preferred radiofrequency band for 5G technology, which has begun to be used in many countries in recent years, is 3.5GHz (Dasgupta et al., 2020, Wang et al., 2022).
In an article titled, “Are There Health Hazards Coming From the Rollout of 5G,” they reveal that scientists have reported a lot about hazards from the current 3G and 4G EMFs used for cell phones, smart meters, Wi-Fi and other communication frequencies, but there is almost nothing known about hazards of 5G.
There is increasing evidence that the “microwave syndrome” or “electrohypersensitivity” (EHS) is a real disease that is caused by exposure to electromagnetic fields. The reported incidence of the syndrome is increasing along with increasing exposure to EMFs from: mobile phones, cordless telephones (especially DECT) smart meters, home area networks, Wi-Fi in homes, high power
Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and take a look at when the idea of “microwave (syndrome) illness” was first identified.
Microwave generating equipment first became common during World War 2 with the development of radar. Soviet bloc countries reported that individuals exposed to microwaves frequently developed: headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, sleepiness, difficulty in concentration, poor memory, emotional instability, and labile cardiovascular function, and established stringent exposure standards.
For a variety of reasons these reports were discounted in Western countries, where the prevailing belief was that there could be no adverse health effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) However, there were several accidental exposures of radar operators in Western countries that resulted in persistent symptoms similar to those described above.
The Soviets irradiated the US Embassy in Moscow with microwaves during the period 1953-1975, and while no convincing evidence of elevated cancer rates was reported, there were reports of “microwave illness”. Officials passed these complaints off as being due to anxiety, not effects of the microwave exposure.
What research is telling us about electromagnetic fields and radio frequency radiation
With 5G, which has started to be used in some countries without the necessary precautions being taken, the amount of RFR to which living things are exposed will increase. According to a case study, published in Annals of Clinical and Medical Case Reports, fifth generation (5G) wireless technology is being rolled out worldwide, “Despite no previous research on possible negative effects on human health and the environment.”
Researchers at the Environment and Cancer Research Foundation in Sweden reported that after a 5G base station was installed within 60 meters of her second-
The 5G antenna was installed on the roof of a three-floor adjacent building and projected toward her apartment on the second floor. There was previously a 4G base station antenna at the same spot, but it was only after it was replaced by the 5G antenna that the woman quickly developed severe symptoms of microwave syndrome. The 4G antenna was removed shortly after the 5G deployment.
The woman reported that when she relocated to another apartment not near a 5G base station, her symptoms all quickly resolved, only to return within 24 hours of her return to her own apartment.
This was the third such case documented by the researchers.
Studies on possible health effects from exposure to 5G frequencies were all but nonexistent until recently. In a study published in October 2022, animals were exposed to the 5G frequency of 3.5 GHz for two hours a day, five days a week, for one month. The exposure caused oxidative stress and an increase of degenerated neurons in the hippocampus region of the brain, in addition to decreased irisin levels, a hormone positively correlated with weight loss and healthy cognitive function.
I want to provide enough information that will allow you to do your own research; here is another study, “Radiation from wireless technology affects the blood, the heart, and the autonomic nervous system” that goes into how exposure to electrosmog generated by electric, electronic, and wireless technology is accelerating to the point that a portion of the population is experiencing adverse reactions when they are exposed. The study goes on to explain that the symptoms of electrohypersensitivity (EHS), best described as rapid aging syndrome, experienced by adults and children resemble symptoms experienced by radar operators in the 1940s to the 1960s and are well described in the literature.
An increasingly common response includes clumping (rouleau formation) of the red blood cells, heart palpitations, and pain or pressure in the chest accompanied by anxiety. Those who experience prolonged and severe
EHS may develop psychological problems as a consequence of their inability to work, their limited ability to travel in our highly technological environment, and the social stigma that their symptoms are imagined rather than real.
The American Cancer Society has also spoken to the effects of EHS and RF. “At this time, there’s no strong evidence that exposure to RF waves from cell phone towers causes any noticeable health effects. However, this does not mean that the RF waves from cell phone towers have been proven to be absolutely safe. Most expert organizations agree that more research is needed to help clarify this, especially for any possible longterm effects.”
Interestingly, even though this has been documented, we are still seeing 5G towers pop up relatively overnight.
In 2019, 258 electromagnetic field (EMF) scientists from 58 countries appealed to the United Nations to impose a moratorium on the rollout of 5G until health effects could be properly assessed.
“Wireless communication technologies are rapidly becoming an integral part of every economic sector, but there is a rapidly growing body of scientific evidence of harm to people, plants, animals, and microbes caused by exposure to these technologies.
It is our opinion that adverse health consequences of chronic and involuntary exposure of people to nonionizing EMF sources are being ignored by national and international health organizations despite our repeated inquiries as well as inquiries made by many other concerned scientists, medical doctors, and advocates.”
“This constitutes a clear violation of human rights, as defined by the United Nations.”
Again, you will not see articles, or news stories like this on mainstream media, and if you do see it, the story is quickly reviewed, and then passed over. It is our duty as servants of the people to give you the information, the tools needed to take care of yourself, your family, and your community.
USE YOUR WORDS! If you are uncomfortable with the information that we just presented to you, and you are concerned about your health, write to your local MP’s. Make some noise for issues that matter to you, and of course, reach out to us with your thoughts.
For one former police officer, it seems like crime does pay: The ugly brutal past of former Constable William Walker
MICHAEL THOMAS michael@carib101.com TC REPORTERIn 2004 a judge found Toronto constable William Walker guilty of assault in the wrongful arrest of a 46-year-old printer. Walker was found guilty of assault causing bodily harm when he stopped Devon Murray in 2002. During his arrest, Murray was handcuffed, smashed against a cruiser, and forced to the ground. His left cheekbone was fractured.
Murray, a Jamaican immigrant, was simply walking home from work when Walker stopped him. What transpired next was nothing short of a miracle for him. Murray, finding no reason why he should be stopped, asked Constable Walker if it was a crime to be Black, stretched out his two hands, and said, “Then arrest me.”
From there all hell broke loose for Murray, Walker replied, “You are under arrest.” This is how Murray suffered all
the bodily harm explained in the opening paragraph of this article.
In his defence, Constable Walker claimed the good old-fashioned one. Imagine coming out of your car, arresting someone, badly beating that person, and then telling a judge that you were concerned for your safety. Why does this sound familiar?
However, Judge Annemarie Bonkalo never bought Walker’s story and convicted him of assault plus wrongful arrest.
All this took place because Constable Walker thought Murray was a suspect that was sought by police, yet, when he realized it was not his suspect; he still made the arrest and took Murray off to be detained.
Just the fact that this officer continued to investigate Mr. Murray even after he knew that this was the wrong man speaks volumes of his true intentions.
Mr. Murray’s attorney Robert Rotenberg had this to say at the time of Constable Walker’s conviction, “This is not an anti-police ruling but a ruling that says we live in a city where like everyone else, police have limitations. There are limitations on the power they have over citizens,”
Back then Murray had filed a
$1.6-million lawsuit against Constable Walker and the Toronto Police Services Board. It has come to the attention of Toronto Caribbean Newspaper that former Police Constable William D Walker is now a high-ranking member of the City of Toronto Marine Fire Services, according to the Province of Ontario, Treasury Board Secretariat. The position title is District Chief Senior Fire Boat Captain.
This is not an overnight position. It is most likely that Walker has been working in that field for several years now and at present has an annual salary of $191,940.37.
Just to be factual this information can be found on the Ontario government website.
Here is a short bio of this famous officer’s career after leaving Toronto’s Police Force.
Meet Captain Bill Walker, Bill is the Senior Marine Captain at Toronto Fire Services and has over 33 years of service as a Commercial Captain with Ontario Northland and a variety of Lake Freighter and Tour Boat operations. Prior to being hired by Toronto Fire, he worked for the Toronto Police Marine Unit, where he responded to hundreds of marine incidents. Bill has worked with Toronto Fire
Services since 2009 and is currently in charge of the Toronto Fires Marine division, where he supervises shift Captains and Engineers. Bill is also the lead instructor for Rescue Boat Operations and Fireboat-based Ice Water Rescue Operations.
Our question here is how do you get convicted as a police officer of wrongful arrest and assault causing bodily harm and then find your way to this high-profile position without any of the so-called mainstream media shedding light on your ugly and brutal past?
I remember a time when convicted criminals who were released into society were barred from such positions, and the public was notified of the whereabouts of such dangerous men. What has changed in Walker’s case?
This is a man who made a conscious decision to profile a member of Canada’s minority Black community, brutalize the individual, wrongfully arrest and detain him, and had the guts to go to court and lie to a judge all in the name of serving and protecting, which is what he was supposed to be doing. As taxpayers, our community reserves the right to know the background of its officials. Talk about a slap in the face.
and some fans are happy about it. Of course, there are other Spider-Man fans that believe the trans flag’s inclusion is nothing more than propaganda. It is understandable that some parents may feel uncomfortable, and/or upset by their children being exposed to LGBTQ visibility in media or education.
Fans are already analyzing every frame of the newly released “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” trailer. The footage for the film has some details that for some are worth dissecting. One such detail that fans have become drawn to includes a trans flag that was spotted in Spider-Man character Gwen Stacy’s bedroom.
In the second trailer released for “Spider-Man: Across the SpiderVerse,” a “Protect trans-kids” flag is shown in the bedroom of a character known as Gwen Stacy.
Concerned fans found this red flag in the film’s second trailer, which was released on April 4th, 2023.
The message here is clear
There are those who believe that promoting LGBTQ visibility and acceptance is not propaganda, but rather a matter of equal rights and representation.
Let’s do a quick review of what propaganda is, and then we will return to the story at hand.
Propaganda is a form of communication that is used to influence people’s opinions, beliefs, and actions. It is often used by governments, organizations (Sony Animation) and individuals to promote a particular agenda or point of view. The media is one of the most common channels for the dissemination of propaganda.
One form of propaganda is repetition: repetition is a technique of propaganda that involves repeating a particular message or slogan over and over again in order to reinforce it in people’s
minds. This can be used to create a sense of urgency or to make a particular message seem more credible. For example, a movie showing a particular slogan, such as “Protect trans-kids” in order to create a sense of unity and support among its supporters. Alone, this slogan is harmless, but compiled with all of the LGBTQ information being filtered through the media, it becomes part of the repeating message.
Some people believe that Sony Animation is pandering the LGBTQ agenda. Is Sony unaware of Disney Pixar’s recent failures with Lightyear and Strange World at the box office?
It is reported that these animated films pushed the transgender ideology towards families going to theatres and apparently met the same result: Both filmes were gigantic expensive flops.
It is important for parents to teach their children about media consumption. With the increasing availability of digital media and technology, children are being exposed to various types of content at a younger age than ever before. Parents play a crucial role in guiding their children’s media use
and helping them develop healthy habits.
Children may stumble upon inappropriate content such as violence, pornography, or hate speech while browsing the internet, or watching movies. Parents can help their children avoid such content by setting age-appropriate restrictions and monitoring their online activities.
Parents can also help their children develop critical thinking skills and learn to evaluate the credibility of the information they find online. This includes identifying fake news and propaganda, understanding biases, and questioning sources.
Studies continue to show that excessive screen time and social media use can negatively impact children’s physical and mental health. Parents can teach their children to balance their screen time with other activities, such as exercise and socializing. By setting limits, teaching media literacy skills, promoting healthy habits, and fostering positive behavior, parents can help lessen the influence of media on our young minds.

Mayoral candidate Knia Singh snaps back at Premier Doug Ford’s bail reform
assist prosecutors with gathering evidence and assessing public safety risk during the bail hearing stage.
Grant funding may also be used to acquire bail compliance technology or support a network that police services could use to share bail offender information.
fairly targeted, overrepresented in the criminal justice system, and faced harsher sentences compared to non-Black Canadians.
On April 27th, 2023, the Ontario government announced that they would be investing $112 million to immediately strengthen the province’s bail system and ensure that high-risk and repeat violent offenders comply with their bail conditions.
The funding will be used to: support new technology, establish violent crime bail teams, expand the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement Squad and provide prosecutors with the resources they need to conduct complex bail hearings.
“As the country and our province face rising crime rates and people are feeling increasingly unsafe in their communities, this funding will help ensure anyone out on bail is following the rules and high-risk, repeat offenders are kept in jail,” said Premier Doug Ford. “We can’t have a justice system where violent criminals are arrested one day and back out on the streets the next. We’re doing our part to fix a broken bail system and look forward to working with our federal partners to finish the job.”
Specifics of the investment include:
• The creation of a new bail compliance and warrant apprehension grant
$24 million will be made available over three years to help the OPP and municipal and First Nations police services establish dedicated bail compliance teams. Teams will also
• Expansion of the OPP Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad
$48 million to create a dedicated Bail Compliance Unit within the OPP’s Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement Squad. This new dedicated, provincewide, Bail Compliance Unit will apprehend high-risk provincial offenders who have broken their bail conditions or are unlawfully at large.
• Establishment of intensive serious violent crime bail teams
$26 million to create Intensive Serious Violent Crime Bail Teams within the courts system to ensure that there are dedicated prosecutors and subject matter experts to prepare for and properly conduct the often lengthy and complex bail hearings.
• Rollout of the bail compliance dashboard
A new provincewide bail monitoring system to allow police services to monitor high-risk offenders with the most accurate data possible.
One mayoral candidate was not convinced about this proposal and released his feeling about the announced bail system reform.
Black people in Canada have historically been impacted by the courts in various ways and continue to face systemic discrimination within the justice system. There have been numerous cases in which Black Canadians have been un -
For example, studies have shown that Black Canadians are more likely to be stopped, searched, and arrested by police, and are overrepresented in the prison population. They are also less likely to be granted bail, more likely to receive longer prison sentences, and more likely to be placed in solitary confinement.
Furthermore, the courts have not always been a reliable means of seeking justice for Black Canadians who have experienced discrimination and racial profiling. There have been cases in which Black Canadians have been wrongfully convicted and have had to fight for years to have their names cleared.
It is why mayoral candidate Knia Singh released a letter snapping back at Premier Ford, and the Toronto Caribbean Newspaper has that letter here for you.
“This week Premier Doug Ford announced $112 million towards bail reform under the premise of making the Province of Ontario Safer. It has been said that our bail system is broken, and as a practicing lawyer in the courts daily, I can assure you it is not.
Judge’s, JP’s, Crown Attorneys and Defense lawyers all diligently evaluate the allegations, evidence supporting the allegations and the sureties proposed to determine the risk to the community if the accused were to be released. The principles of bail are enshrined in the Constitution of the country and our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
You cannot reform bail without tearing apart the Constitution and setting the new standard as guilty until proven innocent. s.11(d) of the _Charter_ states: 11
Any person charged with an offence has the right (d) to be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal; (e) not to be denied reasonable
bail without just cause; Any potential risk associated with the release of an accused is balanced by the terms of release, how many sureties are provided and what the financial amount pledged is.
Overcrowding in Ontario jails suggests that the bail system is not broken. Using millions of dollars to create special bail conditions that target serious violent repeat offenders, will be subject to the frailties of human bias that have been the deficiency in this Province’s exercise of authority since its inception.
To scapegoat the justice system as the cause of repeat offences is to ignore the failures of the Solicitor General and Attorney General when it comes to rehabilitation in our Province’s Detention Centers.
Ontario jails are a breeding ground for criminality and violence that has failed to address the smuggling of contraband inside Ontario’s prisons by Detention Centre employees and fails to address the lack of social support while those denied bail are detained.
If you house people in cages and treat them like animals and fail to address the root cause of the alleged criminal behavior, then you have demonstrated you have no desire to correct the problem, and you have a vested interest in ensuring the problem remains.
Premier Ford, the $112 million dollars you have pledged for resources that already exist can be better used to address safety in the province, specifically Toronto, by providing funding for mental health supports, to subsidize housing, and to create career opportunities so criminal activity is averted.
The initiative announced seems like an attempt to secure votes, rather than provide solutions.” Sincerely,
Knia SinghWhat are your thoughts, community; is this just an attempt by Premier Ford to secure votes?
It is over four years now since the Federal/ Provincial/Territorial (FBT) Ministers
Responsible for Seniors was launched to bring to the forefront issues that were vital to seniors in Canada. They are an intergovernmental body established to: share information, discuss new and emerging issues related to seniors, and work collaboratively on key projects. The website listed information on April 26th, 2018, especially resources that seniors can access to help them thrive, excel and live healthy lives.
On February 24th, 2022, FBT met in Toronto to discuss additional support for Canada’s aging population. The overall purpose of the meeting was to discuss
key priorities and meaningful ways to support current, and future generations of older Canadians. The meeting focused on issues such as: senior abuse, housing and ageism, and was chaired by Kamal Khera (Canada’s Minister of Seniors) and Raymond Cho (Ontario’s Minister for Seniors and Accessibility). Special emphasis was placed on recent measures that are currently in place to support seniors. This has been really challenging due to the aftermath of the COVD-19 pandemic.
At the meeting in Mississauga on April 26th, 2023, which was the first inperson one since 2019, discussions were held regarding how to support present and future generations of older Canadians, as well as the hurdles they faced with respect to: the cost of living, senior abuse, housing, ageism and the role of technology. The fact that seniors are the demographic groups that are growing the fastest in Canada makes addressing these issues through government policies and programs even more important. There is an urgent need for greater collaboration from all levels of government in varied
jurisdictions to address these vital issues immediately.
Some of the information that was shared related to measures that were taken to provide greater help for seniors, such as a series of target affordability steps directed to eliminating poverty and improving their standard of living. There were discussions regarding the difficulties and opportunities involved in providing support to seniors as they age and wider conversations about the real-life challenges and concern that respective governments face in tackling this issue.
Furthermore, updates were provided with respect to the Forum’s 2022-25 work cycle and approval was given to two reports from working groups on senior abuse and ageism, which came from the “What We Heard “report. These reports, which resulted from collaboration between the FBT, will be released on the Forum’s website in the next few months.
In the press release Minister Cho states, “Ontario is excited to share our knowledge and experience with our federal, provincial and territorial partners as
we deliver meaningful programs and services that help seniors stay healthy, safe and connected to community life. This includes: recognizing the unique needs of diverse seniors, ending the stigma of ageism and reducing social isolation.”
Honourable Kamal Khera states, ”I am pleased to have met with my provincial and territorial counterparts to further collaborate and discuss how we can best support our rapidly growing aging population. At the very core of this FPT Forum was a desire to find ways to improve the overall well being of seniors and make their lives more affordable.
I was happy to share how the federal government has strengthened the Guaranteed Income Supplement and Old Age Security, and restored the age of eligibility for those benefits back to 65.
We also know that a majority of seniors want to age in place. It was very informative to discuss with my provincial and territorial counterparts about how we can deliver better support while ensuring access to safe and high-quality care, in our respective jurisdictions.”

Ahh ahh choo!!!!! Sigh! AHH AHH CHOO!!!!!
You rub your itchy, watery eyes, your nose is running, you can’t stop sneezing, coughing, and you notice a rash on your arm.
It’s that dreaded time of year again for our hay fever sufferers. Hay fever is a common allergy, sometimes called seasonal allergic rhinitis and it’s caused by the immune system overreacting to pollen floating in the air. As the weather gets warmer, the pollen count grows! If you are one that suffers from sneezing, runny nose, congestion, coughing, itchy throat/mouth/nose/ ears, excessive mucus, red and/or watery eyes, postnasal drip, headaches or asthma, this one’s for you!
Allergies are a reaction of the immune system to a foreign substance, called an allergen, that is usually harmless to the body. The symptoms of allergies can vary depending on the type of allergen and the severity of the reaction. Now, most of us run to the drug store and find the strongest allergy medication we can, but there are those who would prefer a more natural way to deal with our dreaded allergy symptoms. I received an email from a consortium of nurses, and in the email, they presented a list of suggestions that I want to share with the community.
Before we go through this list, I want to ensure that these suggestions are only recommendations, and you should consult a trusted health professional before you try anything. With that said, let’s see how we can help you end your suffering.
Okay one more sneeze.
AHH AHH CHOO!!!!!
The A-Z Hay Fever Guide Acupuncture - helps balance the immune response and has a positive effect on alleviating hay fever symptoms. “Stimulating the Qu-chi acupuncture point on your elbow can improve the natural energy level so your body doesn’t react when it comes into contact with pollen,” says acupuncture expert Andrew Broch.
Biotin - one of the B vitamins helps maintain healthy mucous membranes of the: nose, throat, sinuses and tear ducts. Foods such as fish, egg yolks, avocados, green leafy vegetables and nuts are good sources of Biotin.
Bromelain - is an enzyme found in papaya and pineapple. Natural healers consider bromelain to be effective at improving breathing by reducing swelling.
Carotenoids are naturally occurring pigments in plants, which act as an antioxidant and helps reduce inflammation - can be found in foods such as carrots, apricots, pumpkin, sweet potato.
Change your air filters regularly both in home and in your car.
Change your clothes when coming in from outside and shower before bed to rinse the day’s pollen off your skin and hair. Keep your hair tied up when outside preventing it from getting into your eyes, mouth or nose.
Cold compress to irritated eyes
Consuming local honey will expose you to the naturally occurring pollen in your area, helping your body to form a tolerance. You can further add honey with freshly squeezed lemon to a cup of hot water - enjoy it as a tea.
Dehumidifiers to control the growth of mildew and molds
Ditch the booze - Alcoholic drinks contain histamines. If you really want to enjoy a social drink, alcohol such as gin or vodka are low in histamines.
Ditch the dairy - Reduce dairy intake if the production of mucus is bothersome. Drink plenty of hydrating fluids such as water
Burn essential oils such as - eucalyptus, lavender, frankincense, oregano and peppermint as they have natural antihistamine and /or antimicrobial and/or anti-inflammatory properties.
Exercise at the beginning or at the end of the day when the pollen count is lower Garlic! Who doesn’t love garlic? Garlic helps block the production of histamine, acts as a decongestant and has anti-inflammatory properties helping to reduce hay fever symptoms.
Herbal teas have natural antihistamine and/or anti-inflammatory effects such as: nettle, licorice, green, chamomile, elderflower, ginger, peppermint, anise - sip throughout the day.
Keep your home clean! Wiping dust away from surfaces with moistened tissues instead of a cloth helps to avoid the transfer of pollen to other parts of the house.
Vacuum your home often using a HEPA filter. Exchange carpets for hard flooring.
Oregano - powerful antioxidant with natural antibiotic and antifungal properties; may help lower cholesterol and inhibit cancer cell growth as well. Can be used as a spice when cooking, purchased in pill or capsule supplement form or used as an essential oil.
**oregano oil extract is not generally recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. **
Saline nasal rinses or ‘netti pots’ are great to flush out allergens, thin mucus, curb post nasal drip and clean bacteria from your nasal passages. Do NOT use plain water because it has a different pH than your body and will feel irritating. Remember to change the sterile solutions daily as bacteria can build up if left standing and become contaminated which can cause life threatening infections! Mix up only what you will use for the day and clean your irrigation device!
Spirulina - a blue-green algae - demonstrated antiallergic protective effects towards allergic rhinitis.
Steam inhalation - hot water alone or in combination with honey, lemon or your favorite essential oil.
Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory properties which can help to ease nasal congestion.
Vitamin C is a known natural antihistamine and can be found in oranges, lemons and grapefruit.
Vitamin D - that sunshine vitamin! deficiency is linked to the development of allergies and autoimmune diseases.
Wash your bedsheets often, more than normal in the spring, summer and fall months when pollen is at its highest and use protective ‘allergenic’ dust covers for your mattress and pillows.
If you have a pet at home, keeping them clean and brushed out daily will allow you to keep loving them. Brush them outside before they enter your home and wipe them down with a damp towel. Good luck, and if you try any of these, let us know how they worked for you.
tion on their health care and engage with public policy.
The Ontario Health Coalition has been at the forefront of fighting for the rights of Ontarians to access the full benefits and privileges of the public health care system.
Their primary goal is to protect and improve our public health care system. They work to strengthen the principles of the Canada Health Act (CHA). They describe themselves as a non-profit, non-partisan public interest activist coalition and network.
There are four core values that are essential to their operation, which are: equality, democracy, social inclusion and social justice, as well as five principles of the CHA: universality, comprehensiveness, portability, accessibility and public administration. As a network of 500 grassroots community organizations, they seek to provide members of the public with more informa-
The announcement by the Ontario government that it is proceeding with plans to increase privatization of surgeries, diagnostics, private hospitals and clinics to for-profit and hospitals have raised alarms in many sectors of the healthcare system. In addition, by introducing new legislation and voting against amendments to the legislation, it has shown that it intends to pass Bill 160 into law once debate after third reading is completed. OHA is very concerned that the majority of Ontarians have been left out of the Government’s plans to go ahead with privatization of Ontario hospitals.
In a communication from the OHC it listed several actions that have been done so far:
• The government has already called for bids for three new private day hospitals to do 14,000 cataract surgeries initially as well as diagnostics.
• They have given repeated boosts of tens of millions to expand existing private clinics to cover care for “thousands of patients.”
• They are expanding the number of
private clinics and intend to further expand the volumes as well as to expand the types of surgeries they privatize. They plan to have private hip and knee surgeries up and running by 2024.
• At the same time the government has underspent the health care budget and the COVID budget every year by billions of dollars.
OHC is highly concerned that while the Ontario government has reduced spending on health care by $1.25 billion, it has pumped more money into private for-profit clinics and hospitals. This is a transfer of millions of dollars from the public health system to private for-profit clinics. The fact that hospitals across Ontario have to close their emergency operating room at 4:00 p.m, weekends and during the week is truly disturbing.
The OHC is particularly concerned that patients are paying exorbitant costs for services, which is in direct contravention of the Canada Health Act. Patients are facing excessive charges and getting access to doctors, tests and surgeries. There is a great concern that the privatization of a wide range of services will lead to a two-tier health system, and the resulting privatization of public hospitals will dismantle the public hospital systems and thus single-tier
public medicare.
On Tuesday, April 18th, 2023, there was the official launch by the health coalitions of the campaign to stop the privatization of Ontario’s public hospitals. On Wednesday May 3rd, 2023, the OHC held a briefing as well as a question-and-answer session to address vital issues such as:
• Real-world experience of privatization in Canada, U.S, and internationally
• What the evidence shows regarding its impacts on: quality of care, health care costs, quality and deregulation for the workforce, and the foundational principle of equity in health care
The OHC has seen fit to mount a community-run referendum on Friday May 26th, 2023, and Saturday May 27th, 2023. Thousands of voting stations will be open across Ontario at: local grocery stores, coffee shops, outside grocery stores, community centres and legions.
Online voting will be able to be done on the website: PublicHospitalVote. ca as well as at certain workplaces. The question that will be on the ballots is, “Do you want our public hospital services to be privatized to for profit hospitals and clinics? Yes, or No?”
Prefer a more natural way to deal with your dreaded allergy symptoms; this one’s for you!

You might be wondering, is drag for kids? Drag is for everyone! Parents, ask yourself, what’s the difference between what you wear at home versus what you wear at work? You’re doing drag honey; you just don’t know it!
The Carousel Theatre for Young People’s Drag Queen Summer Camp Homepage
Yes, yes, this is for real, I swear I am not making this up. In Vancouver, there is a program supported by:
• The City of Vancouver
• Canada Council for the Arts
• British Columbia Arts Council
• British Columbia
They will hold a Drag Queen summer camp for children aged 7-17 this coming July!
Children attend summer camp to make new friends, have fun doing arts and crafts, science experiments, code cool robots or video games, try a new sport, or develop their love for the great outdoors. It should also be a place where kids can at least escape the constant onslaught of political ideologies taught in their schools.
According to the theatre’s website, parents can expect their children to learn at camp how to access their inner confidence, show their true colors, and maybe even let out their inner diva. Furthermore, the program promises parents and kids that attendees will receive a Drag Makeup Starter Kit.
Concerned parents; no need to
worry; the Carousel Theatre informs concerned parents and the public that drag is standard. The theatre has even defined cross-dressing in the other gender’s clothing as usual as wearing different clothing at home than what one wears to work.
Finally, this summer camp received funding through Canadian tax dollars. The Carousel Theatre received over $41,000 in federal funding last year, most of it granted from the Ministry of Heritage.
What are your thoughts community? Is this something that you would consider sending your child to?
Is seven years old too young to be introducing the idea of drag? When we were younger, we would play pretend, would that be considered the same thing?
Let’s hear what you have to say, community. We look forward to hearing from you.

TC REPORTERAs a boy on my island vegetables and fruits were plentiful. What were not common were pesticides and artificial sustaining gimmicks, and I do believe it is because the latter was not prevalent in the Caribbean back then, that I am still alive and healthy today.
It has been brought to Toronto Caribbean Newspaper’s attention that fruits and vegetables with the brand or sticker that says “Apeel” can pose a health hazard to consumers, so we have decided to take a closer look and find out who is behind this brand, what is this brand all about and more.
Here is what we have found out so far. This is a short read from Apeel’s site claiming that all is well.
Edipeel is a thin, edible postharvest
coating made from plant-derived materials that extend the shelf-life of fresh fruits and vegetables by slowing moisture loss and reducing oxidation.
Apeel’s Edipeel meets the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements for qualification as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) in the United States as a surface-finishing agent for fresh fruits and vegetables.
Edipeel is also allowed for use on all fruits and vegetables in: Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, and South Africa, without restriction.
This is a list of some of the vegetables and fruits that are covered with this stuff: avocados, citrus fruit, mangoes, papayas, melons, bananas, pineapples, and pomegranates.
As we see in the above paragraph Apeel was quick to name the countries where its product is accepted, named the merchandise on which you will find its products, but when it came to breaking down the contents of its product in layman’s terms, I find them woefully lacking clarity.
Here is the explanation.
Apeel’s Edipeel is composed entirely of a mixture of food-grade glycerolipids derived
from edible plant oils, specifically the food additive mono- and di-glycerides of fatty acids, which conform to the specifications set forth by the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC), Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), and the European Union.
The (FCC) FAO/WHO(JECFA) and the European Union? I was wondering why they mentioned these five impressive entities instead of telling us what exactly is in this product, but after looking closer I can see why.
Once the WHO is mentioned, Apeel might as well add in the United Nations, because that’s an extension of the same arm. These are all organizations within organizations with very questionable reputations and intentions.
Consumers must do their due diligence when it comes to food products and these days, I recommend a double dose. Here is some more information from Apeel.
Founded in 2012, Apeel Sciences continues to develop products for USDA Organic Certified and conventional produce categories. Headquartered in Goleta, CA, they work with partners ranging from small growers to the world’s largest food brands.
Something troubling about this so -
lution is that even if you try washing it off there is no guarantee you will succeed. This is all in the company’s documents. It is very important to note here that Apeel has the backing of the establishment behind them, not to mention they are making sure they corner the market from small growers to mega food brands. This means we, as consumers, must be vigilant.
After some digging, I found the nine-page hazard document from Apeel. Here are the side effects of the ingredients in Apeel.
H226 Flammable liquid and vapor;
H302 Harmful if swallowed. H304 may be fatal if swallowed and enters the airways. H315 Causes skin irritation; H317 may cause an allergic skin reaction. H318 Causes serious eye damage. H400 is very toxic to aquatic life. H411 is toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. H412 is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
As a rule, fruits and vegetables are to be consumed and this must happen before they go bad. Additives that prolong the life of these products must never be trusted. This is like embalming a dead body; you are trying to keep things beyond their natural expiry date.
Federal Government hands out more than 800,000 raises in the past three years
approximately 802,043 federal bureaucrats received a raise during this time period.
An analysis of the data revealed that in 2020 about 258,596 employees received an economic pay increase,151,247 in 2021 and 29,435 in 2022. While 114,538 received a step pay increase in 2020,115,399 in 2021 and 132,827 in 2022.
the government, reached an Impasse. CTF states that PSAC is requesting almost 47 compensation increases over three years, which includes many non-wage benefits.
The CTF observes that according to the Treasury Board of Canada this could add $9.3 billion to government spending.
tor of CTF states in the communication, ”Canadians don’t feel sorry for privileged bureaucrats who took pay raises during the pandemic while the rest of us worried about missing paychecks or losing our jobs. The fact they’re now striking for billions more shows how out-of-touch they are.”
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is committed to ensuring that the federal government is accountable in the ways it spends Canadian’ hard-earned tax dollars.
It is driven to unearth the ways that the government has misspent federal dollars and bring this to the attention of the public.
On Tuesday, April 25th, 2023, it released an investigation by one of its journalists, Ryan Thorpe who analyzed government documents from 2020 to 2022 regarding pay increases for federal employees. These internal government records revealed that
This translates to approximately 373,134 in 2020, 266,646 in 2021 and 162,263 in 2022. This means that over 90% of government employees received at least one raise in 2020 and 2021.
Furthermore, there were an additional 162,263 raises that were given to federal employees in 2022. CTF acknowledges that, “It remains unclear how many individual employees received a pay bump last year. It’s not clear whether some staff may have received more than one raise, in the form of an economic increase and a step increase.”
The strike started on Wednesday, April 19th, when the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), which asked for a 13.5% increase in pay over three years from
In 2020, it was revealed that Federal employees received a 6.64% pay raise after the PSAC negotiated a three-year deal with the federal government in 2020. Furthermore, $125,300 is the average compensation for federal employees who are in full-time employment as noted by the Parliamentary Budget Officer compared to $64,000 according to data from 2022 Statistics Canada.
The conservative think tank, the Fraser Institute mentioned on Tuesday, April 18th, that there has been an increase of 8.5% wage premium for federal employees compared to their counterparts in the private sector. Furthermore, around $559 million was paid out in bonuses to federal employees in 2020.
Franco Terrazzano, Federal Direc-It is interesting that information released from the Parliamentary Budget Officer’s report on March 2023 shows that less than half of federal government workers met the government performance targets regularly each year. In addition, there has been an increase to the federal workforce by 31,227 in the last two years, which has resulted in an increase by 31% to the cost of the bureaucracy.
Terrazzano concludes, “Taxpayers have already paid for hundreds of thousands of pay raises, hundreds of millions in bonuses, and for tens of thousands of new bureaucrats. The bloated bureaucracy doesn’t deserve a penny more from taxpayers.”
Fruits and vegetables may look appealing, but stay away from any with an “Apeel” sticker on it

Owner Belinda Gray is following in her mother’s footsteps, preparing home cooked meals of curried crayfish, spicy stewed pork, crispy fried chicken and other flavorful Jamaican staples. Belinda’s is the perfect pit-stop during a bamboo rafting excursion on the Rio Grande, though reservations are recommended. The scenic cookshop is a favorite destination for in-the-know visitors and VIP celebrities like Beyoncé and Johnny Depp.
Street Food Saturdays: Hosted on select Saturdays each month, this riverside picnic is a true local secret. Tucked away in the hills of Mount James in St. Andrew Parish, the pop-up restaurant is helmed by Chef Walker-Barrett. Seated at picnic tables with their feet submerged underwater, patrons can sample an ever-changing seasonal menu of meat and seafood dishes like jerked shrimp, charcoal pork tenderloin and escovitch lobster tails.
Looks like it is time to take a trip back to Jamaica.
Advocates are calling for gang leader’s removal from social media
for accumulating 100,000 subscribers.
On different social media apps, Vilaj de Dye showcases himself as a: rapper, musician, and record producer. Outside social media, he is the leader of the Baz 5 Segond - a violent gang known for kidnapping and extortion.
YouTube page to voice concern over the monetization of a gang leader.
Social media started as a simple escape from reality for people to watch and create content for others to enjoy.
Fast forward to now, social media can be a way to help those with a high following achieve more great opportunities.
YouTube, one of the most popular social media apps, rewards its users when they achieve a new subscriber milestone. However, many weren’t too happy when
Izo Vilaj de Dye, a leader of a notorious gang in Haiti, was awarded a silver plaque
Currently, the Village of God, one of Haiti’s poorest slums, is controlled by the gang. The area also has a high kidnapping rate. By the end of 2022, BBC had reported 1,200 cases of gang-related kidnappings in Haiti.
Reuters reported a sharp increase in kidnappings this year. Within a few months into the year, there was a report of at least 389 cases.
The Baz 5 Secong is one of the gangs responsible for most of these kidnappings.
Upon Vilaj de Dye’s posting a photo of himself holding a stack of cash and his awarded YouTube plaque, many took to his
As a result, a campaign was created on Change.org calling for the removal of his YouTube account from the platform. Within days after the campaign’s creation, YouTube took down Vilaj de Dye’s account. Although advocates were pleased about this move, they still say there is a long way to go.
Advocates are now asking for TikTok and Instagram to remove the gang leader from their apps too. They want to prevent his influence and online presence from growing any further by preventing him from gaining any more access to social media apps. Due to gang activity, over 160,000 people have had to seek refuge elsewhere, because of the forced displacement. Everyone has good and bad qualities, but bad influences should never receive rewards.
When asked how to become a famous comedian, Steve Martin replied, “Be so good they can’t ignore you.” It’s true, bad performers can usually be ignored, but there is no ignoring bad public washrooms.
Public washrooms have a reputation for abysmal filth, as evidenced by dirty toilets, overflowing trash, empty or broken soap dispensers, sloppy countertops, and door handles not to be touched.
An American survey found that 21% of respondents used a public washroom at least six times a week, sometimes over 15 times! The reason was not always obvious.
Make a stink for better public washrooms
Youth tend to visit washrooms to use their phones, change their clothes, or “get away”. In fact, 21% of youth acknowledge the use of public washrooms to take a mental health break, to avoid someone, and on occasion to cry.
Older people, in addition to using the facilities, also visit public washrooms to check their appearance.
Whatever the reason to visit, how important is it to take precautions? The good news is that some of the germs found in public washrooms are no different than the germs found in many other places, including the bathroom at home.
Take Staphylococcus aureus for example. It will be found in dirty public washrooms, but it is also commonly carried around by 20-30% of people on their skin or in the respiratory system. It is an opportunistic pathogen, meaning it starts to cause trouble not when commonly encountered in the washroom, but when the immune system is weakened, or when the natural balance of bacteria in the gut is altered.
Authorities disagree on how long
certain other nasty germs survive, or how readily they cause infection, but many bathroom studies have shown remarkable staying power – up to eight days for E. coli. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu can survive on some surfaces for 48 hours.
Washing hands after using public facilities is a no brainer. Yet, a study published in Antimicrobial Resistance & Infection Control found that hand washing and hand-drying equipment in public washrooms are facilitating infections due to contaminated sink handles and paper towel dispensers. Plus, people don’t wash their hands with soapy water for 20 seconds or more.
Even with the best of efforts, some researchers have noted, “Adequate hand hygiene may not always be achievable when using public washrooms.” That’s because the door handle used to leave the washroom is covered in germs.
Opting out of using a public bathroom and resorting to “holding behaviour” is not advisable. “Always go to the bathroom when you have a chance,” goes the
sage advice of King George V. Royalty have their own reasons, but among common folk, holding urine in the bladder can invite bacteria in the urine to multiply and cause the development of urinary tract infections.
When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go. There is worse news to report. A study published in 2020 in Physics of Fluids described a phenomenon known as “toilet turbulence.” It is an alarming and repulsive discovery to learn that flushing a toilet can send small droplets of water and aerosols containing fecal germs three feet into the air above the seat!
One public health message advises users to turn away from the toilet when flushing. Good lord! There’s a reason for a toilet seat lid. Put it down before you flush. Making a stink about public washrooms that are poorly designed and infrequently cleaned is probably the best course of action. After all, what restaurant or community venue wants to be associated with disgusting washrooms?
Yes, feeling a lump in your breast can be a very scary experience.
It’s natural to feel anxious and worried when you discover a lump, as it’s one of the most common signs of breast cancer. However, not all lumps are cancerous, and there are many other possible causes of breast lumps, including cysts, fibroadenomas, and infections.
Today, we are going to speak about breast cancer; a recent study has suggested that Black patients may need breast cancer screenings earlier than what many guidelines recommend
Breast cancer rates are influenced by a complex interplay of factors, including genetics, lifestyle factors, and environmental factors. While the exact reasons why breast cancer rates are higher among
Caribbean women compared to some other populations are not fully understood, there are several factors that may contribute to this disparity.
One factor is genetics. Some studies have found that certain genetic mutations that increase the risk of breast cancer are more common in women of Caribbean descent. For example, the BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations are more prevalent among Ashkenazi Jewish women and women of African and Caribbean descent.
BRCA1 (BReast CAncer gene 1) and BRCA2 (BReast CAncer gene 2) are genes that produce proteins that help repair damaged DNA. Everyone has two copies of each of these genes—one copy inherited from each parent. BRCA1 and BRCA2 are sometimes called tumor suppressor genes because when they have certain changes, called harmful (or pathogenic) variants (or mutations), cancer can develop.
People who inherit harmful variants in one of these genes have increased risks of several cancers—most notably breast and ovarian cancer, but also several additional types of cancer. People who have inherited a harmful variant in BRCA1 and BRCA2 also tend to develop cancer
at younger ages than people who do not have such a variant.
There are other factors that may contribute to the higher rates of breast cancer in Caribbean women include lifestyle factors such as: diet, physical activity, and obesity. Environmental factors such as exposure to toxins or pollution may also play a role.
This new study suggests that Black patients should start screening years earlier, because their risk of breast cancer death in their 40s is higher than that seen in other racial groups.
With data drawn from the National Center for Health Statistics, the authors analyzed data on breast cancer deaths that occurred in the U.S. between 2011 and 2020; in this time frame, more than 415,200 breast cancer deaths were reported.
Among patients in their 40s, the rate of breast cancer deaths varied significantly by race and ethnicity. The rate among Black patients in this age group was 27 deaths per 100,000 people per year. That is compared with 15 deaths per 100,000 person-years in White patients and 11 deaths per 100,000 person-years in American Indian, Alaska Native, Hispanic
and Asian or Pacific Islander patients, respectively.
“Black women tend to reach this risk level of 0.329% earlier, at age 42. White women tend to reach it at age 51, American Indian or Alaska Native and Hispanic women at age 57 years, and Asian or Pacific Islander women later, at age 61,” reported Dr. Mahdi Fallah, a co-author of the new study, and leader of the Risk Adapted Cancer Prevention Group at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany.
The authors concluded that their “Findings suggest that health policy makers and clinicians could consider an alternative, race and ethnicity-adapted approach in which Black female patients start screening earlier,” around 42 years old instead of 50.
It’s important to see a healthcare professional as soon as possible if you notice any changes in your breast, including the appearance of a lump, so that they can perform a thorough evaluation and determine the cause of the lump. Early detection and treatment of breast cancer can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment and recovery.
Studies have found that certain genetic mutations that increase the risk of breast cancer are more common in women of Caribbean descent
Melodic chorus, energetic rap, and an infectious vibe; bon voyage slated to be the song of the summer
the world provides, and good times. This is the third collaboration for DJ/Producer Alonso Mendez and Teria Morada and the first for all three together.
“Bon Voyage is the perfect summer anthem. We really wanted to create that mood and that atmosphere that comes with travel. That sense of wanderlust can really be heard and felt through the beats of the song. All of that with stunning tropical beats and you got yourself a song that we hope so many people can feel joy dancing to.”
DJ/Producer and Founder of Underbite Records Alonso MendezUnderbite Records is thrilled to announce that it will be releasing its brand-new and highly anticipated single Bon Voyage from artists Teria Morada and DJ Alonso Mendez in collaboration with JUNO Award winning and Canadian hip-hop legend Choclair. Is Bon Voyage going to be the song of the summer? Well, the song has a
Teria Morada is an accomplished entertainer, professional singer and lyricist, and dancer/choreographer. She started her artistic endeavours and training at the age of three and has had some major accomplishments throughout her journey. She is a three-time Canadian Latin Music Award recipient, and multiple time Latin Dance Champion.
Alonso Mendez has been a respected DJ in the Toronto scene since1999. Having been half of the defunct Stereo Martini music production duo, he had a chance to work on popular remixes of R&B and dance hits with renowned artists such as: Jully Black, Matt Dusk, La India, America Olivo, Sak Noel, Jes Brieden, Davidson Ospina, Oscar P, Maurice Joshua, Sasha Alazy, Lidell Townsell, Sound Bluntz, Lil’ Pete, Cory Bradshaw, Tony Bishop, Emjay, Marcos Pearson, and Jessie Reyez, among others. His newest venture is the 2023 launch of Underbite Records.
Of course, we can’t forget the infamous Choclair an integral part of the Canadian hip-hop scene and dubbed one of Canada’s Hip Hop Pioneers. With his four JUNOS, five MuchMusic Video Awards and multiple gold records, he has set the benchmark for hip-hop in Canada. Throughout Choclair’s long standing career, he has performed on many notable stages across North America including:
JUNOfest, TDOT FEST, the Toronto International Film Festival, House of Blues, CNE’s Beer Festival, and TOM Fashion Weekto.
Choclair is now taking on the role as Producer, sharing his knowledge of the music business with rising artists. Most recently Choclair has penned the theme song for a DIY reality show and just released three singles Hurt Everybody featuring Classified, Backdraft produced by Classified, and One Day Away.
I had the amazing opportunity to sit down with these three powerhouses, and they openly shared their excitement about the single, “Bon Voyage.”
“This song has been brewing in my soul for half my life,” Tiera shares with me. “A lot of people told me not to do it, and I am glad I didn’t listen to them. It evolved as time went along to a Mediterranean, Latin fusion. I finally was able to get the song out, and it was cool to hear. Some really important people heard it and had a positive reaction to the song. It is even more multicultural now. I love connecting the mosaic of culture. I am a dancer and grew up dancing to Choclair’s music.
Choclair’s creative style and lyrical content reached a new pinnacle, and this song allowed him to creatively word play, and proves that with perseverance and hard work you can move mountains.
“Simone,” Choclair shared enthusiastically, “I heard the song, and all that went through my head is something I heard C-Lo Green say, ‘You don’t want
to keep yourself in a box.’ I don’t want to just be a rapper. I am a fan of music outside of hip-hop. I grew up in Malvern around many cultures, and I see this song as a great way to move past hip-hop. It is about community, inclusion, and going on vacation. It is the kick off song for the summertime. It is just great music. When I first heard it, I wanted to have a mojito. It was just a great vibe.
“How about you Dj Alonso? You seemed to have a vision for this song; how did it all come together for you?”
“Teria and I have been friends for a long time, and she had a song that became “Bon Voyage.” This song is two years in the making. When Teria came up with the song, it was a way to speak about multiculturalism. I was able to extend my creative muscle and discovered that you can express the same message in multiple ways. I was in the middle of another song, and I saw what Teria did as a way to express unity.
It is a fun song and captures all that is Toronto.
We approached Mr. Choclair with the song and talked about it.
I love how Choclair added on to this. He was able to add to it without it sounding cheesy. It elevated the song to a completely different level. This can be challenging, but Choclair did it with style.”
Summertime is coming and the single will be out May 12th, 2023, on all music streaming platforms.
Our Healthcare System: Have you had enough yet?
Ford has to wait, or any MPP, or MP in our nation? They receive preferred customer service, private rooms and 3-5 medical staff to care for them. No shortages for those who manage our health system, no sir.
I may seem angry, and truthfully, I am. The people in my life who are ill are experiencing outlandish and unimaginable lack of service from their healthcare providers. A brother-in-law (Kevin) whose legs have changed colour, swelled to twice the normal size, and drove him insane with pain finally had the chance to see the doctor who finally realized how bad the condition was, and Kevin still is not allowed to go to the hospital.
Family doctors, trauma centres, professionals and hospitals were at odds while he sat and screamed in pain. An elderly mother who after years of testing and medical assistance is told the operation they knew she needed to make her life better, cannot be done. She was waiting for advice for years and finally is told she is S.O.L.
These are the excuses from those who have managed our healthcare system for decades. I am not talking about medication - pain killers, because they already supplied that to many of us years ago, creating the opioid crisis we have been facing for at least a decade, planned and carried out by your well-meaning medical professionals along with Big Pharma. Mass addiction on a scale that could only have been planned, or perhaps our medical support managers are idiots, not realizing the potency of these drugs and their effects.
Years ago, our political leaders envisioned a universal healthcare system that would benefit us all. Well, there have been many complications. We live in an economic system and are treated by medical professionals that adhere to Capitalistic tendencies. Every political administration that has acquired power has limited our universal healthcare system, built speed bumps that curtail spending and investment in what could have been a system envied by the rest of the world.
worst type. Politicians go to special clinics and hospitals to receive health care, with no waiting list applied. You think Premier
A good friend of mine, a drug addict, cannot get any assistance, because he lives on a far-off reservation with very limited medical staff.
Who answers for this mess? This ongoing suffering your neighbour is going through. When our family and neighbours pass away will those responsible come to their funerals, send us a card with their best wishes? Hell no, because they don’t know or care about us. I know of people who have attempted taking their lives more than once because pain fills their lives, and the only answer given them from the health professionals is more drugs/painkillers. All the while the world is critical of Canada’s proliferation towards euthanasia and self-death. Many Canadians are considering their own demise by their own hands.
Liberal, Conservative and even New Democrats took from the healthcare system and shifted monies elsewhere, to places more politically popular. In Ontario, the Ford Conservatives are introducing different forms of private healthcare, knowing that once contracted, these revenue making centres will become permanent, and spread north-westward throughout the province. Many provinces are already doing so.
Our healthcare system is tied to how our economy grows or shrinks. A recession is on the way, so we are told. What will happen to our hospital’s budgets once hard times hit us? Yah! Something to ponder.
What better gift to give mom this year than the gift of laughter; the Mother’s Day Comedy Clash
SIMONE SMITH
simone@carib101.com
“Asking me which team is going to win, is like asking Usain Bolt if he is going to win a race.” Jay Martin
The phrase “laughter is the best medicine” is a common saying that suggests that laughter has positive health benefits. Although laughter may not be a cure-all, there is some evidence to support the idea that laughter can be good for your physical and mental health.
Laughter has been shown to have a number of physiological effects on the body, including increasing heart rate and oxygen consumption, and releasing endorphins, which are natural painkillers. Laughing may also have positive effects on the immune system, reducing stress hormones and increasing the activity of natural killer cells that fight off infection.
In addition to its physical benefits, laughter can also have positive effects on mental health. Laughter can reduce stress
and anxiety, improve mood, and increase feelings of social connection and bonding. What better gift to give mom this year than the gift of laughter; look no further, no shopping needed, we have the gift right here for you.
The Mother’s Day Comedy Clash is back at LBP Brampton for its 20-year anniversary! This year’s show line up is fire (insert emoji). Let’s take a look at our comedic warriors.
Team Jamaica:
• Jay Martin
• Zabrina Douglas
• Drew Thomas
Team Trinidad:
• Jean Paul
• Patrick Russell
• Cindy Ann Boisson
I had to speak to one of the comedic geniuses behind this hilarious clash that has been going on for 20 years. I finally was able to pin down Jay Martin, and he gave me a quick history, as well as what to expect from the Mother’s Day Comedy Clash this year.
“The idea for the Mother’s Day Comedy Clash came to Jean Paul and I when we were swimming at Hellshire Beach, Jamaica. We thought we could go at each other in a comedic battle, and like that the series was born.”
Over the years the show has become quite popular with mothers, and for good reason.
“We are never disappointed with the attendance, and we know that this year’s show is going to be sold out. I believe that our largest attendance at a show stands at 1,800 people. It is a fun day, and we donate proceeds to Lupus Canada. For us, giving back means everything, and we can do it while having a great time.”
“How do you pick your comedians Jay,” I queried.
“The comedians we pick are from all over the islands. We always have a female comedian on the bill to keep it balanced.
When we started it, we didn’t think it would last 20 years. We want to give our audience that Caribbean style humor; things change but what stays the same is family.
I lost my mother at the age of 16 years old, so this time of year is important to me. It is a coping mechanism for me and allows me to bring happiness to those who are motherless.”
“So, who is taking it this year Jay?”
“Really Simone,” Jay said laughing. “Asking me which team is going to win, is like asking Usain Bolt if he is going to win a race. Jamaica is taking it this year; our Jamaican team is strong.”
Team Jamaica
“Zabrina is a female comedian in Canada.
She is so enriched, and a creative writer.
Drew Thomas is Jamaican born and lives in Atlanta, Georgia. We did a show with him last year in Atlanta, and there were about 100 Canadians there that day. He spends months on cruise ships making people laugh. Toronto is going to love us.
Of course, me, and you already know that I am ready to get that work in.”
Team Trinidad
“Jean Paul beats me up every year. He always comes back from Carnival and is in that mood, and he will throw jabs at me. He won the Battle of the Roastmaster, so you know he has some jokes.
Patrick Russell is a well-known comedian, born and raised in Toronto who is sure to have everyone laughing.
Cindy-Ann Buisson is a storyteller. She was so good last time that we had to bring her back. She lives in Florida, and she is flying in for the show.”
Jay let me in on one more thing that is sure to excite attendees.
“This year we are giving away prizes as usual, but the Grand prize will be a weekend in Jamaica at JAYMARTIN VILLAS, a set of beautiful villas nestled in Ocho Rios. Yes mom! This year it is all about you. Hopefully by the time this article comes out there will still be some tickets left. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers.
Housing: Location, location, location and affordability
find a small hovel somewhere within the “Big City,” but you and your entire family will need to get jobs and pay for it until you’re all old and grey haired.
When you apply the term “affordable,” it depends what you’re talking about and what location you’re in. There is no affordable housing within the seven largest cities in Canada, or the 125 largest urban centres in America. If you are independently wealthy then yes, housing costs are affordable, but if you work for a living – absolutely not!
I cannot comprehend why governments will not get involved in housing starts and development of housing? Why do politicians and bureaucrats rely upon
those who have put the public in this situation of horrible housing costs and housing starts shortages? Who benefits most from scarcity of available housing and the incredible high costs of housing across this land? Of course, those driving pricey Volvo’s, Corvettes and Mercedes, those who control the build and sale of these houses. We need to break this alliance, and reverse this trend of reliance upon the housing axis of evil, those who build and sell housing. The price can never be too high, while the cost of these homes being built can never be low enough, allowing the axis to absorb excessive profits off the backs of the working and middle classes. The class system still exists folks, and you’re
not at the top. Average North Americans need to revolt against this alliance and its hold upon our banking and governmental systems. Looking for a: home, house, apartment, or igloo? Look no further than anywhere but the big urban centres. Yes rural areas, small to medium towns and cities where working class folk are appreciated and accommodated. Our population is increasing, and our new fellow citizens will move towards the urban centres, so go forth young and old, search out your country’s communities with hope in your minds, and greater buying power in your pocketbooks too.

KEMAHL “THE HITMAN” RUSSELL
Return of the Assassin Part I
“The only thing that would have made this win better would have been a knock-out!” ~ Kemahl “The Hitman”
RussellHis mind is shaped by intense physical and mental training, as well as a deep commitment to the sport. He is highly focused, disciplined, and from what I have seen is able to handle pressure in the ring.
One of the key characteristics of our Classic Man is his ability to stay calm and focused under pressure. In the ring, boxers are constantly facing challenges and obstacles, whether it’s an opponent who is trying to knock them out, or the physical toll of the sport. Our Classic Man knows that in order to be successful, he must stay focused on their strategy and maintain his composure, even when things are not going his way.
Our Classic Man possesses a high level of mental toughness. The training and competition in the sport are grueling, and I have watched him push himself beyond his physical limits to succeed. Whether it was cutting weight at the last minute, or healing from a grueling day of training, I watched him handle setbacks and failures, and use them as opportunities to learn and improve.
Finally, our Classic Man has a deep sense of discipline and commitment. The sport requires a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication, and he has put in the time and effort necessary to achieve his goals. He has made sacrifices and stays focused on his training and preparation, even when it means giving up other activities or pleasures.
Kemahl ‘Hitman’ Russell, Jamaica’s People’s Champ, returned to the ring on Saturday, April 29th, 2023, in Pickering, Ontario, Canada, where he took on Marcos Jesus Cornejo from
Argentina, in a super-middleweight eight-round contest that was part of a six-fight card.
Kemahl, who was thought to be of world title fight caliber five years ago, suffered a setback when he had to have eye surgery, after sustaining an injury. At that time, he had a 13-1 record and had just come off a spectacular victory over Michi Munoz of Mexico, in defense of his NABF middleweight title on March 16th, 2018.
As you can imagine returning to boxing after a long layoff can be a challenging task for several reasons. After a long layoff, a boxer’s fitness level may have deteriorated, making it difficult to regain the necessary level of endurance, strength, speed, and agility required for boxing.
Then of course there is ring rust, which is a term used to describe the deterioration of a boxer’s skills due to inactivity. After a long layoff, a boxer may experience a lack of timing, accuracy, and coordination, making it difficult to perform at their best.
It doesn’t help that after a long layoff, a boxer may experience doubts about their abilities, which can affect their confidence and performance in the ring, and we can’t discount mother nature. As boxers get older, their physical abilities may start to decline, making it even more challenging to return to boxing after a long layoff.
Regardless of all the odds, and people telling him that he should probably not get back in the ring, Kemahl is committed to his goal of becoming world champion, and during my time documenting his return, I personally observed that even when life got tough, he had a positive attitude. He sees challenges as opportunities to grow and improve, and instead of avoiding challenges, he embraces them and views them as a chance to learn and develop.
This two-part series is one that has never been written about Kemahl ever before. I am going to share the ups and downs of this world-renowned boxer; his personal struggles and triumphs, which are incredibly inspiring and motivating. Immersing myself in Kemahl’s world allowed me to witness and hear of his ability to overcome obstacles, and when his hand was raised on April 29th, 2023, everything that he had manifested came to fruition.
Journey with me into the life of Jamaica’s hero…
I was introduced to Kemahl through Tyler Buxton, one of the great minds behind United Boxing Promotions. I had started attending the fights after his beautiful wife Elizabeth Buxton reached out to the paper letting us know that there were Jamaican boxers who were part of their boxing team.
When Tyler first introduced Kemahl, I knew right away that there was a story there. Our first interaction happened in November 2022. He was actually in the hospital, having yet another eye surgery. Despite the fact that he was in pain, Kemahl was good natured, and our first discussion lasted four hours. During that time, I learned just what type of fighter Kemahl was. Not only was he dominant in the ring, but he had also found a way to navigate life, even though from the start he had been thrown in the deep end.
“I lost my mom at the age of 14, and this changed my life forever,” Kemahl shares with me. “The one thing that I started to take very seriously was my health. I watched my mom suffer for years, and I had to take care of her at a young age. It is what changed the way that I look at food, and health.”
Losing a mother at a young age can be an incredibly painful and difficult experience, and as I listened to him, I could hear that even years later, this loss still deeply affected him. The
loss of a parent can be traumatic and can impact a person’s emotional, mental, and physical health.
Think about it; at a young age, children rely heavily on their parents for emotional support, love, and guidance. Losing a mother means losing this important relationship and the person who often acts as the primary caregiver. This naturally left Kemahl feeling lost, alone, and confused.
“Unfortunately, my mom was not alive long enough to teach me how to survive in this world, so I had to learn a lot of life lessons on my own. I didn’t know what I was feeling at the time, but now I recognize that I was probably depressed, dealing with anxiety, and of course a lot of anger.”
During my time documenting his journey back to the ring, I was able to observe exactly how much this loss had affected him. It has been difficult for him to form healthy relationships, trust others, and feel a sense of security in the world. It doesn’t help that sadly, there were times in his career that there were people in his life who did not have his best interest at heart.
In part two of “Return of the Assassin,” we will take a look at Kemahl’s incredible journey as an athlete and give boxing fans an inside look into the return of the People’s Champion.

How do chemical peels work?
4 facts about probiotics
Probiotics are living bacteria that are good for you, especially your digestive system. Get to know them better with these four facts.
1. The benefits are well documented
Hundreds of studies have been conducted on the benefits of probiotics. This wealth of scientific data has made it possible to use them to treat various health problems.
2. Different types of probiotics deliver different benefits
The strain of a bacterium determines the expected benefits of probiotics. Even two similar types of probiotics from different strains won’t produce the same results.
3. Not all yogurts are sources of probiotics
Many yogurts contain strains of bacteria that haven’t been scientifically proven beneficial. Choose one that clearly indicates the presence of a strain of bacteria with proven benefits.
4. Consumption shouldn’t be taken lightly
If you’re in good health and have enough intestinal flora, you probably don’t need to eat probiotics. In fact, taking them without medical advice isn’t recommended.
Talk to your family doctor, pharmacist or gastroenterologist before taking probiotics.
Chemical peels target and remove dead skin cells to improve the skin’s tone and texture. This treatment is non-invasive and can be administered over several weeks to achieve optimal results. Here’s an overview of how this increasingly popular treatment works.
Preparing the skin
Your skin must be prepared to undergo the peel treatment. First, your skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove dirt or debris that could interfere with the treatment. Then, a special product is applied to the parts of your face that don’t need to be treated, such as the lips and eye area.
Applying the product
Once the skin is ready, the peel solution is applied. The peel solution is medicated and contains several specially selected and dosed acids to exfo-
liate the skin by eliminating dead surface cells. The stimulated epidermis renews itself, taking on a smoother appearance. Different peel solution concentrations can reach deeper layers of the skin to promote, among other things, collagen production. Sun screen is then applied to protect the treated skin.
Repeating the procedure
It’s recommended to receive several treatments spread over a few weeks, allowing the skin to heal between sessions. This maximizes the effectiveness of the peel.
Peels are perfect for rejuvenating and preparing the skin for the changing seasons. Remember to schedule your appointments at a medical esthetic clinic during these times of the year.
Low back sprains: causes, symptoms and treatments
Low back or lumbar sprains are the most common injury affecting the spine. This lower back pain results from soft tissue damage in the joints, muscles, ligaments or discs. Here’s what you need to know.
Causes
Lumbar sprains are more common in people who smoke, are sedentary or are over weight. However, they can be caused by several things, including:
• Repeated strain
• Pregnancy
• Untreated herniated discs
• Incorrect movement
• Lumbar instability (family history)
• Poor posture
• Trauma (blow, fall)
Symptoms
The symptoms of a lumbar sprain can vary from person to person. However, the most common symptoms include:
• Difficulty performing specific movements
like bending over or standing up
• Discomfort when remaining immobile in one position
• Pain in the upper buttocks
• Localized pain in the lower back that may come on gradually or suddenly
• Inflammation in the lower back
• Muscle stiffness that interferes with bending the back
Treatments
It’s best to remain active despite a lumbar sprain to facilitate recovery while avoiding heavy lifting, and you can take anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain. If the pain is unbearable, complete rest is recommended, but not for more than 48 hours. After that, you can gradually resume your normal routine; just take it easy in the beginning.
Physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic and massage therapy can help relieve the pain of a lumbar strain. Don’t hesitate to make an appointment with a health professional near you.
Why do some women have pain during sex?
of a menstrual cycle women experience vaginal bleeding. The inside of the uterus, called the endometrium, starts to break down, resulting in a normal menstrual period.
Doctors cannot completely explain why some women also have misplaced endometrial lining in the abdominal cavity. This also bleeds, but since this blood is trapped, with nowhere to escape, it triggers pelvic symptoms.
come thickened, scarred and terribly tender. Often the disease causes the formation of large abdominal cysts full of blood.
Patients complain of a diversity of symptoms. In addition to painful sex, they suffer from generalized chronic abdominal pain, low backache, and fatigue. Abnormal bleeding is common too.
What causes more anxiety is that about 30% of these women have trouble becoming pregnant.
Surgery is usually done if doctors believe endometriosis is widespread throughout the abdomen. Doctors then resort to abdominal laparoscopy. What they see is often endometrial lesions involving many areas of the pelvic cavity along with extensive involvement of the uterosacral ligaments.
Why do some women shy away from sex? It might be fatigue after a long day where everything, everything, has gone wrong, but before men jump to conclusions, they should know about a disease called endometriosis. This problem causes severe pain during sex. It occurs in about 10% of women and has a profound effect on their lives. About 30% will have trouble becoming pregnant.
Some women with endometriosis may be fortunate. In spite of extensive disease, they are completely free of symptoms. Others, with minimal amounts of endometriosis, bitterly complain of a variety of symptoms.
What is endometriosis? At the end
Endometritis is the unfortunate result, an inflammatory reaction throughout the pelvic cavity. Depending on the location of the abnormal endometrium, the pain can be intense. The uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes can be affected, as can the urinary bladder or the ureter, a small tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. All too often the endometriosis is scattered throughout other parts of the pelvic cavity.
However, the prime location for this disease is at the end of the vagina where the uterosacral ligaments provide support for the vaginal tissues. It is a very sensitive area after endometriosis triggers inflammation of these ligaments. They be -
The actress Susan Sarandon, who suffered with this condition and advocates for the Endometriosis Foundation of America, said, “Endometriosis was definitely another character in any relationship that I had.” The comedian Whoopi Goldberg has also spoken about the need for more attention. “There is nothing dirty about it. No religious group is going to be pissed if you discuss this, because if you don’t discuss it, many more women are going to find themselves unable to have children or find themselves close to dying because [the disease has] led to something else.”
Medical treatment is always tried first. Birth control can provide relief by stopping periods.
Looking at these lesions through the laparoscope allows doctors to destroy them with an electric current, and if ovarian cysts are present these can also be removed, conserving normal tissue for future pregnancies.
What about menopause? The pain may improve once periods stop, and there is a lack of the female hormone estrogen. There is always hope that laparoscopic surgery and destruction of endometrial lesions will result in a wanted pregnancy. However, the constant waiting can be terribly frustrating for those desiring pregnancy.
An Italian proverb reassures, “Hope is the last thing ever lost,” or as another wise sage remarked, “Don’t forget to wind the clock, as tomorrow is another day.”

I remember that day when I had to choose between accepting my admission to the journal-ism program at Ryerson University or having my baby. I found out I was pregnant and got the acceptance letter in the same week. I was 19 years old at the time and pretty confused. I chose to have my baby.
If you’re a mother reading this article I’m sure you can relate to the amount of sacrifices we’ve had to make for our child/children. Sacrifices they will never know about, or may not even understand until they become adults. To date, I have four children, and I can say that motherhood has been an exhausting yet rewarding journey.
Mothers have spent decades rais-
ing tiny humans praying that we do a good enough job to bring about a functional adult. We are hard on ourselves at times, selfless most of the time, and don’t know if we’re coming, or going all the time especially if you have two or more un-der the age of 5. On the other hand, some of us are angry about our situation surrounding our children. That anger spews into: resentment, bitterness and an underlying irritability that you just can’t seem to shake. We would never want our children to suffer, but whether you are an overwhelmed or uninvolved mother, the children will always drink from a half full glass or starve from an empty one.
I say all this to say that if you don’t release old paradigms surrounding your child’s upbring-ing, put yourself first and acknowledge what your needs are; you will eventually burn out and be deemed useless to yourself and the precious lives in your hands.
I want to briefly share some things I wish someone told me about raising children in my early 20’s.
The perfect mother is an illusion. There is no right, or wrong way to raise a
Walking and running for weight loss
RACHEL MARY RILEY

HEALTH & FITNESS
The greatest activity that you can accom-
plish to lose weight and keep it off is walk-
Walking and running are two different activities however they both have their benefits indoor and outdoor, just like regular exercising has its benefits. You can also walk for one hour to 10,000 steps for 30 days, or beyond in order to get the desired results that you want. You can jog weather it’s in the morning, or at night for 10-20 minutes a day and still get through with your weight loss. Sprinting is another way to accomplish drastic weight loss. Overall, walking and running has many insight and benefits. Let’s talk about some
Difference between walking and runStudies have shown that regular aerobic exercises, such as walking, reduced belly fat and helped people manage obesity.
Walking and running help burn calories in the body, but they also help to reduce belly fat, depending on the intensity of the exercise. However, running may help reduce belly fat more effectively. One study, in 27 middle-aged females with obesity, found that those who participated in high-intensity exercise training lost significantly more belly fat than those who did low-intensity exercise, or no exercise training for 16 weeks (Walking Vs. Running: Weight Loss, Heart Health, and More, 2020).
If you’re just getting into exercise, or are out of shape, start with walking short distances, then gradually increase your distance and duration. Even walking at a casual pace of two miles per hour can cut your risk of heart problems by 31%, if you do it
regularly. Running burns more than twice as many calories per minute as walking. For a person who weighs 160 pounds, walking at a pace of 3.5 miles per hour for 30 minutes burns about 156 calories. Running at 6 mph for the same time burns about 356 calories.
Low impact vs. high impact
You might think of walking as just running slowly, but when you walk, you have one foot on the ground at all times. When you run, you’re in the air during each stride. Each time you land, your body absorbs the impact of about three times your body weight (The Difference Between Walking and Running, 2021).
How to get more out of your walk
Here are some ways to improve your walking workout:
Walk in a group: Walking with friends or family can make it more fun. It can also help you stick to your exercise plan.
Swing your arms: Bend your arms at 90 degrees and swing your arms naturally as you walk. Swinging them vigorously encourages you to walk faster. It also gives your upper body more of a workout. You’ll burn 5% to 10% more calories, too.
Try incline walking: If you walk on a treadmill, increase the incline by 5% or 10%. If you walk outdoors, look for hills or even a steep driveway to make your walk more challenging.
Water walking: Do this in shallow water at the beach or in a pool. The resistance of the water increases the intensity of your walk but lessens the impact on your joints.
Walking poles: Walking poles can help you burn up to 30% more calories. They add intensity and help you maintain good posture as you walk (The Difference Between Walking and Running, 2021).

child. Some may be carefully groomed in strict religious homes and still grow to become thieves while others could have been abused all their childhood and later become advocates for child abuse and save hundreds of lives. However your child was raised is the destiny they chose before they reincarnated here. Stop beating yourself up about the things you cannot change. Honour the privilege that you were chosen to raise these children, give yourself grace for trying your best and embrace your perfect imperfections!
Seek support, especially if you are a single mother. It’s not just about financial support or finding a babysitter although that is valid as well. Support can come in the form of joining a baby book club at your local library where you meet and befriend other mothers. You don’t have to go at it alone, you don’t have to feel alone. There are resources out there and family and friends who are in fact willing to babysit and contribute financially if you’d only ask.
Seeking support is not an act of weakness, but an act of strength that tears down the “perfect mother” illusion. Get outside! I remember for the first three months I stayed home with my newborn. I’d take him outside everyday for a walk around the block. The chilled morning breeze revived me, the sun energized me and the sound of the river calmed me. Being outside in green spaces lowers the risk of postpartum depression and balances mood. You can get to the: washing, cooking and cleaning later, make
room for the outdoors!
Create boundaries and say no!
I wasn’t as available after having my children, but that never stopped people from asking for favours. It is in our nature as mothers to nurture and want to be there for our loved ones in need, but it can never be to your own detriment. It is important to sit with yourself and be real about what you are able to take on, be real about how you feel at any given moment, and be real about when you need to take a break. Stop allowing people to throw you off your schedule by popping up announced, say no to that friend who always wants you to babysit, and don’t feel obligated to answer the phone if you don’t feel like talking. Who cares if they know you’re home! Honour yourself and what you need to do for your own mental health, because some people are totally oblivious to their actions until you make them aware. Trust me, it can be an uncomfortable conversation but it’s worth it.
All in all as a mother, the journey of raising kids hasn’t always been easy. Every child has a different personality and therefore requires a different approach when it comes to communi-cation, discipline and love. The secret sauce is to do your best raising them. Support and nurture them as equally as you support and nurture yourself! There is no shame in taking some time to fill your cup so your children have an abundant supply to drink from.
Take some time to fill your cup, so your children have an abundant supply to drink from

Celebrity Chefs, Men Who Cook for a Cause

DELICIOUS CONVERSATIONS
On a delightful Sunday evening, April 29th, I enjoyed attending «Celebrity Chefs: Men Who Cook,» an exceptional event that brought together 18 talented chefs, home cooks, politicians, and community leaders. Their goal was to showcase their culinary prowess and raise funds for an incredibly worthy cause.
Kenneth Rose, an original founder of the United Achievers Club and a member for 32 years, shared the inspiring story behind the organization. Established in 1982 by five young men, the club aimed to combat racism and provide much-needed services and safe spaces to help immigrants adjust to life in Canada. Thanks to their tireless efforts, the United Achievers Club secured funding for non-profit housing, which led to the construction of an eleven-story building with 152 units and 26 townhouses. To date, the club has assisted over 400 students and raised more than $430,000 in scholarships.
The night’s beneficiaries were graduating high school students and the William Osler Health System, with a specific focus on paediatric sickle cell treatment. Throughout the event, chefs faced the challenge of having their creations critiqued by discerning judges, all vying for the coveted gold medal.
The mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, was a testament to dedication and community spirit. Despite attending multiple events throughout the day, he arrived at «Celebrity Chefs: Men Who Cook» with his son, ready to support this remarkable cause. Showcasing his culinary talents, Mayor Brown presented his delightful creation, «Popping Nacho Cups,» to the eager attendees and discerning judges. His participation in the event was a reminder of the importance of community leaders engaging in local initiatives, fostering a strong sense of unity and togetherness.
Before the event commenced, I had the opportunity to speak with some of the talented chefs. Jonathan Joukema, a former culinary school student, presented a delectable scratch-made ravioli, sourced entirely from local farmers. Des-
pite his culinary background, Jonathan humbly refused the title of ‘chef,’ expressing his respect for the hard work and dedication of those in the industry. Having left the restaurant business to spend more time with his family, he remains passionate about cooking for loved ones.
Chef Phil, who previously owned Soulyve restaurant in Orangeville for a decade and another establishment in downtown Guelph, transitioned to being a private chef to avoid industry burnout. I witnessed a heart-warming moment between Chef Phil and his father just before the event began, as he helped his dad don his chef jacket – a testament to the community and familial spirit of the evening. His coconut rosé pasta, freshly cooked for patrons and judges alike, was creamy and impeccably spiced.
Chef David Rapelje, whose father sadly passed away in May, recounted one of their last conversations. His father warned him against becoming a workaholic, urging him to seize any opportunity to explore his passion. David took this advice, enrolling in culinary school at the age of 56 and turning his hobby into his life’s work. His submission, an Aebleskiver – a Danish dessert that can be savoury or sweet – was filled with a seedless raspberry purée and topped with a fresh raspberry containing 100% pure maple syrup. This exquisite creation earned first place in the dessert category.
Witnessing such a diverse group of West Indian individuals gathered together for a noble cause, facilitated by an organization dedicated to creating safe spaces for the community, was truly inspiring. It was a testament to the age-old saying, «It takes a village to raise a child.»
Congratulations to all the winners of this remarkable event, and here’s to the continued success of the United Achievers Club and the difference they make in the lives of so many!
And the winners were: Appetizers:
• 1st: Courtney Guy - Journey’s Shrimp Sensation
• 2nd: Patrick Brown (Mayor) - Patrick’s Popping Nacho Cups
• 3rd: Dale Williams - Bacon-wrapped Chicken
Soups/Salads:
• 1st: William Carter - Mama Ess Saturday Beef Soup
• 2nd: Phil DeWar - Saskatoon Lentil Soup
• 3rd: Paul Deacon - Cussin Cous
Now that it seems as if the BBL era is slowly ending, it’s time that people start embracing what they have naturally.
In March of this year, socialite Blac Chyna announced she was beginning a new journey in life. This journey started with the reverse of procedures she had done over the years.
It’s time to start embracing all shapes; the return of the natural body
Chyna admitted to getting silicone injections in her butt when she was 19. Thankfully, she did not experience any adverse side effects from the illegal procedure.
She also had breast implants removed and facial fillers dissolved.
If you’re active on social media, you would know that having a slim figure with a large behind has been a popular body shape for the past few years. Many well-known influencers, celebrities, and regular people have admitted to achieving that figure through a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL). Some people have turned to the black market to receive a larger bottom through the highly risky butt injections.
Over the years, we continue to see people struggle to accept that their body is beautiful the way it is because it is not like the trending figure at the moment.
The majority of those impacted by this issue are children and young adults. People within these brackets often deal with belittlement from others for the natural shape of their bodies.
When having a skinny body was in, there was a high rise in cases of people suffering from eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia.
During the seemingly ongoing BBL era, there have been many stories of patients dying while on the operating table. The death rate is higher for
those who received illegal butt injections from the black market.
Though Chyna is not the first person who had her procedures reversed, her decision to go through with the reversions was an eye-opener and made me realize what needs to be changed.
It’s time that we started embracing all shapes.
I know it’s something many have said for a long time, but with social media’s popularity, we can use the platform to put that message out there. No one should have to feel bad about themselves, or put their health on the line, because of how their body looks naturally.
BY ADRIAN REECETraditionally men have been required to uphold an image of toughness wherever they go, even their partners are unaware of the more sensitive sides beneath the surface. Many people would call it toxic masculinity to show constant resilience, and never letting one’s guard down, even when the world is crashing down. Now we are in a new era where the requirements have changed, and even the most significant, most robust men don’t need to be a monolith anymore.
Today men are finding places to come together under the security umbrella of a listening ear and an understanding heart. They do that with fellow
dating scene in this new era, or more access to education has led to greater personal understanding. Could it be that these eras of men are just cut from a different cloth than their predecessors?
In large part, male entrepreneurs who are no strangers to the struggles of men and want to see others find peace in their brotherhood are creating these safe spaces. A program in Toronto called Iron Sharpens Iron, held the first Friday of every month, is for men only and is a place for them to come together to: talk, network and unwind without society’s expectations of bravado looming over their heads.
Blk Men’s Style also organizes flash mobs that bring men together in style to look good and feel good amongst many brothers who share the desire to put their best selves out into the world. They have also been known to host yoga sessions for men that relax the mind and body. They have con-
nected with life coaches and speakers who provide insight into healthy ways of overcoming adversity and advancing oneself.
These days’ men prioritize their mental health and emotional depth; in previous years, their feelings were overlooked and disregarded in much of society, and they were tired of not being heard. Some have taken it upon themselves to create spaces to bridge the divide between feelings and vulnerability. Now we see what these men have had on their minds for years. The gap between the desires of men and their intentions is a misunderstanding, and it is the force that separates these two entities in daily interactions with people.
This era of men is unique; they are emotionally in tune with themselves, seeking therapy and craving to release their stressors and hardships while simultaneously being the: strong, determined, and focused men of old.
We’re discovering the intricacies of male thought and realizing how important it is to listen to the hardships and burdens they bare without telling them to, “Suck it up and deal with it.” Men are not a monolith, but persons of depth and intense feeling. These spaces have allowed them to be who they are, complete without the fear of losing parts of themselves, or wearing a mask to survive the harsh judgments of expectation.
We see more confidence and vulnerability, yet it doesn’t weaken a man but inspires strength; the strength to let down your guard and maintain the responsibility of being a community pillar. This is no easy job, but men are okay with expanding their societal roles and letting the world know their needs. A long time ago, it was taboo to talk about your needs as a man; today, it is a requirement to be an even better one.
Obsession, infatuation, blind devotion, craving desire comes to mind, as the world turns and you languish in self-pity and doubt. Your compulsion to achieve avariciousness for love, attention, material gain and power boiling over within you. You often want what you simply cannot have, and yet the desire is there with a belief there is a chance you can achieve, win or possess the thing or person you desire.
You need to be satisfied, your contentment a central focus, fulfilment required. How can this be achieved you ask? Ravenous hunger, or lust for what you want grows within you, as your mind and emotions burst forth in flames of desire, despair, or joy. You need someone to show you generosity and understanding, a guiding hand perhaps. Out of control in thought and possible action, your need to be lifted up while you are falling down, showing you that toxic lust, love or passion are usually destruc-
tive.
What often results is never kind. A broken heart, a dream despised, an achiever’s passage blocked while what it is you want out of reach, often denied. What have you learnt from this fevered situation? Perhaps logic applied before emotions rule, control yourself always and think before you jump. Reality often stinks, but it is still reality. Life’s rules remain. Other statements come to mind like, “If at first you do not succeed, try, try again,” or “There are many fish in the sea (love life possibilities).” No matter who you may be, climbing the ladder of success, achievement, or even personal growth faces you with loss, accidents and mishaps that will make you possibly fall, or have to take a few steps backwards.
Poisonous thoughts, desires and actions never build up someone, but rather distract from the needed prize while often not fulfilling what you
truly need. Toxicity is no friend of common sense, true love and understanding of others. If you know of a person going through such a situation either extend a hand in assistance, or stay clear. Like a virus, toxic emotions, desires, beliefs are contaminating and powerfully dangerous. Often logic will not find a place in their thoughts, a debate, or discussion unwanted.
Ideological, sexual, political, personal emotional extremes are toxic to those who believe and all who are in contact with the inflicted. Toxic emotions can lead to self-hate, denial and project that emotion towards others. Violence can be one result of this mindset.
Remember the less you respond to toxic people, the more powerful your life will become. If you face a toxic person, or situation, and you can run, do so. If not, don’t hesitate, Fumigate.
It is 2023; Men are looking for safe spaces where they can embody more than just stoicism

Now that we have the narcissist out of the way, I can start sharing the parts of this story that are uniquely uplifting. In any story, you have to encapsulate the good parts and the bad parts, because they are a part of life that cannot be escaped.
Getting rid of M took time; not because he was special in any particular way, but because of the hold he had on my mind and my emotions. I literally had to research myself out of that relationship. I spent hours online, reading about narcissists, and how they can ruin people’s selfconcept: gaslighting, lying, using.
I managed to do so and rid myself of the pestilence. Interesting how people who have such a profound impact on your life do not have to be around long.
During this time, I had to find solace in people who cared about me, and would not judge me for spending that time with M. They reminded me that bad situations can be great teachers, because they often force us to confront challenges, problems, and obstacles that we may not have encountered otherwise. When we face difficult circumstances, we are forced to adapt and learn new skills in order to overcome them. This led to great personal growth and development, as well as a greater

understanding of myself and the world around me.
I had to tap into my inner strength and resilience to persevere through these difficult times, skills that till this day are paramount in my ability to adapt to what life throws at me. This helped me build a stronger sense of self and increased my capacity to handle future challenges.
This situation with M allowed me to really stop and take a look at myself; what was my role in all of this? It gave me valuable feedback and insights about myself and my life. It highlighted areas where I needed to improve, taught me important lessons about my values and priorities, and helped me to develop a greater sense of empathy and compassion for others who may be going through similar challenges.
This self-work thing is tough I tell you; I completely innerstand why so many people forfeit the journey of self-discovery. Let’s look at some reasons why you, reading this article right now may not be willing to do it:
Uncovering your weaknesses
During the process of self-discovery, you may come across aspects of yourself that you don't particularly like or that you struggle with. It can be difficult to acknowledge and confront your weaknesses, especially if they are things, you have been trying to avoid or deny.
Facing your fears
Self-discovery often involves taking risks and stepping outside of your comfort zones. This can be scary and challenging, as it requires you to confront your fears and
The European Prejudice in interpreting Caribbean history Part I
DESMOND BOLLERS

CARIBBEAN HISTORY
Europeans have always approached the study of the history of non-Europeans with a jaundiced eye.
Some European historians, when interpreting events in Caribbean history, always characterize the interaction between Africans and people of other races as a situation in which the African is subordinate to and enslaved by the members of the other race even in the absence of any evidence to support this interpretation.
For example, when discussing the Black Caribs of St. Vincent, these historians’ conjecture that the Kalinago upon their arrival in the island must have initially enslaved the Africans but overcame their enslavers and established their own society. They make a similar assertion regarding the Black Miskitos of the Central American coast in spite of the fact that both of these groups are half-African/half-Native American meaning that there was a high rate of inter-racial marriage between them.
In the case of the Black pirates, they insist that the Africans serving aboard pirate ships must have been held in captivity, although they don’t explain how that
would have been possible given the easy availability of weapons aboard the ships and the ample opportunity for escape every time the pirate ship pulled into port. It is true that while in many instances the exact nature of the relationship between the Africans and the other ethnic group is difficult to decipher, because there are no written records, the default position of many European historians, possibly because of their inherent biases, is that the Africans must have been enslaved. They cannot conceptualize a situation in which Africans and people of other races coexisted as equals.
Some historians, when referring to religious practices among Africans in the Caribbean describe these as Voodoo practices. Let’s take a step back and examine the situation.
In West Africa by the 16th century Voodoo type religions were only practiced in the easternmost region of the Bight of Benin, the Kingdom of Dahomey and the kingdoms of south-eastern Nigeria. The people who participated in kidnapping and trafficking came, for the most part, from coastal states since these were the Africans who first came into contact with Europeans and who therefore received the weapons that made their raiding and kidnapping activities possible.
Next edition, we will take a deeper look at how history has been misconstrued and clarify important aspects of Caribbean history.

Confronting your past
As you explore your inner self, you may uncover past experiences or traumas that you have suppressed or forgotten. Revisiting these memories can be painful and difficult, but it can also be necessary for healing and growth.
Overcoming societal expectations
Society often imposes certain expectations and norms on individuals, which can make it challenging to truly understand yourself
and your own desires. It can take time and effort to break free from these expectations and discover your authentic self.
The journey of self-discovery has been challenging, but ultimately a rewarding process. It has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of myself and my place in the world.

Colcanect is building bridges from Columbia to Canada with cannabis

progressive, forward-thinking companies like Colcanect, once struggling countries will become cannabis utopias of the future.
Colcanect was born from the minds of two friends who were both Colombian nationals trying to figure out a way to connect their country with Canada through canna-

bis. In fact, this is the origin of their name, which is an amalgamated abbreviation of that founding idea.
Jenny Cuadros and Carlos Miranda were seeking growth from their current stations in life and knew that the joint passion they shared for Colombia and for cannabis would be the fuel that would propel them on a successful trajectory in both business and life. The confidence in their vision of what could be, empowered them to start their business even though absent extensive formal experience.
“When you are most scared or anxious to begin something, it is also the best time to take the plunge” stated Carlos. So, in 2020 they dove into the cannabis industry and immediately began making a meaningful impact. Soon after starting, they were joined by their third member, Daniela Diaz. With her unique perspective and skills, she added the last missing components that the team needed. With everyone in a role that utilized their skills fuelled by their passion, Colcanect was ready to truly blossom.
Essentially a cannabis consultation firm, Colcanect expands far beyond the normal definition of such a business. Operating on the core values of: education, exploration and entertainment; they seek to build a bridge between Colombia and Canada using our shared love for cannabis. Education
Given the monetary and environmental costs associated with single-use hygiene products, switching to washable versions is a no-brainer. You can now easily find the following reusable items:
1. Tampon applicators
2. Sanitary pad
3. Menstrual cups
4. Cotton swabs
5. Diapers (including special swimming diapers)
6. Wipes
7. Facial tissues
8. Toilet “paper”
9. Incontinence protection
10. Makeup removal wipes
Most of these reusable items are offered in a variety of sizes and styles. But to reduce your carbon footprint as much as possible, be sure to privilege locally made products.
Be sure to carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and sanitizing your reusable hygiene products. Other wise, they could present a health risk.
A beginner’s guide to reusable diapers
In North America, approximately 40 billion diapers end up in landfills every year. What’s worse is that even though some of their components are technically biodegradable, diapers take at least 250 years to decompose. While the plastic content of a single diaper isn’t harmful, the combined environmental impact of billions of diapers leaching plastic into the soil is potentially catastrophic. The solution?
Adopting reusable diapers.
How effective are they?
One concern about reusable diapers is that they’re not as effective as the disposable kind. That may have been true in the past, but modern reusable diapers are equipped with waterproof banding that prevents leaks and strong, secure Velcro or snaps to ensure they’ll stay on.
How convenient are they?
All you need to do is dump the solids in the toilet and then put the dirty diapers in a plastic-lined bin until you’re ready to wash
them. Most manufacturers recommend you wash them twice and add an extra rinse to ensure no detergent remains. There are also laundry services that can clean the diapers for you.
How expensive are they?
The outright investment for reusable diapers is more expensive than the one for their disposable counterparts. However, in the long run, using these diapers may save you money. First, you won’t need to buy any more disposables. Second, using them for more than one child will save you even more money. Finally, thanks to effective sanitization procedures, it’s common to sell them to another family once you’re done with them.
Raising a child isn’t easy, and you’ll need to make many difficult choices as a parent. Thankfully, choosing reusable diapers is an economically and ecologically sound decision you can stand behind.
being the foundation of their company places Colcanect in a distinguished class amongst a huge crowd mostly looking for financial gain. They understand that teaching people about cannabis and about Colombia in an unbiased fashion is the only way to combat long held negative preconceptions about both. Once trust is built between the educators and the educated, all the doors fly open.
Which leads to their other core values of exploration and entertainment. Colcanect wants to help their clients explore how cannabis can best affect their life whether it is: mentally, physically or spiritually. Through this effort, the cultivation of cannabis knowledge exchange, commerce and tourism begins between our two countries.
Utilizing a vast network of connections in Colombia, they are able to organize resorts, hotels, restaurants and spas into luxurious retreats and vacations catered to your every need amidst some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Creating stunning and memorable experiences while also helping clients achieve their goals elevates what anyone will come to expect from companies other than Colcanect.
Ensuring the connection also benefits Colombians; they are champions for an incredibly noble cause that would bring leg-
endary Colombian coffee infused with cannabis to Canada. It is grown and processed by the families of farmers and peasants, who have been displaced and hit by the internal conflict, violence, and the failed war on drugs.
Colcanect is helping them rebuild their lives along with the reputation of the entire country. There is nothing more touching than seeing so many lives positively transformed through the power of cannabis. Jenny poetically adds, “No one thought we could do this, so we had to give ourselves the chance. Now our thing is to give others that chance to make their dreams come true.”
Ultimately, the goal of Colcanect is to help normalize cannabis in Colombia and Canada while using the resources that can be obtained through industry to rebuild their country. They seek to redefine the status quo of the current cannabis sector by placing people of colour in places of power.
When asked if they could condense what Colcanect meant to them into one word, Carlos said “Connection,” Daniela replied “Knowledge,” Jenny emotionally ended with “Hope.” Volumes can be spoken, but words are cheap around feelings this real.
Adopting sustainable design practices is a key component in fighting climate change. Here’s how the average homeowner can make their renovation projects greener.
What is sustainable design?
The guiding principle behind sustainable design is that the negative environmental impacts of erecting and maintaining modern buildings can be minimized by implementing certain practices. These include curtailing waste, reducing the consumption of non-renewable resources, conserving water and creating healthy, functional spaces.
Building an energy efficient home with recycled materials is a prime example of how sustainable design methods can be used to construct residential buildings.
How can I apply these principles?
Homeowners who are renovating can implement sustainable design practices in a number of ways. Here are some ideas:
• Flooring options. Reclaimed wood, such as from scaffolds, is a great way to revamp your floors. Plus, they’re pre-seasoned and won’t warp once installed.
• Paint options. Eco-friendly paints, which contain no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a good option. For an even greener choice, seek out retailers who sell recycled paint.
• Surface options. Countertops made from recycled materials are increasingly popular and vastly more sustainable than those made from man-made materials such as engineered stone. Some companies also offer ceramic tiles made from recycled television screens.
• Plumbing options. If updating a bathroom, opt for low-flow toilets, faucets and showers.
• Furniture options. Consider looking for reclaimed furniture, or furniture built from recycled and upcycled materials.
Where can I find sustainable materials? Most hardware stores carry at least some of these materials. Low-flow fixtures, for instance, are readily available. In addition, there are suppliers and artisans who specialize in offering sustainable and recycled products.

Should you change your pet’s food?
Most pets don’t require a varied diet, but this doesn’t mean they should eat the same type of food throughout their lives. In fact, there are key times when a new type of food is required. Here’s what you should know.
When to change your pet’s diet
Animals have different nutritional and caloric needs at various stages in their life. For example, a young pet needs different food than one that’s an adult or a senior.
But aging isn’t the only reason to consider changing your pet’s diet. If you notice that your dog or cat has developed a food sensitivity or needs help mana-
ging their weight, a different diet may help.
How to change your pet’s diet
The transition to a new food should be gradual and take at least a week. This will help ensure that your pet gets used to the new taste and doesn’t suffer from stomach issues.
On the first day, feed them a mix of 75 per cent old food and 25 per cent new food. The following days, progressively use more of the new food and less of the old until you attain a mix of 75 per cent new food and 25 per cent old food. From there, you can feed them their new food alone.
If your pet doesn’t eat the new type of food, don’t give up. You may just need to make the transition even more gradually and over a longer period of time by changing the ratio of food more slowly.
Does my cat have OCD?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a well-known condition in humans, but did you know that cats can be affected by it as well? While it’s unclear what causes feline OCD, it’s thought to be related to anxiety and stress. Here’s what cat owners should know.
Signs
Repetitive and compulsive behaviour is the main sign of OCD in cats. Watch out for the following:
• Over-grooming to the point of making the skin raw
• Repeated vocalizations that don’t seem to be saying anything
• Pacing back and forth
• Chewing or sucking on fabric or plastic
• Tail chasing or self-mutilation
Diagnosis
It’s not easy to diagnose feline OCD. If your cat exhibits a pattern of behaviour that makes you suspect the condition, it’s important to see a veterinarian. They’ll start by ruling out any other potential cause. It’s a good idea to bring along any proof of your cat’s actions, such as a video, in order to illustrate to what extent your cat is acting strangely.
There’s no cure for feline OCD, but once it’s been diagnosed, there are ways to help manage the symptoms. Your veterinarian may prescribe medications to curb the compulsions, and it’s a good idea to ignore your cat’s compulsive behaviour and make sure it gets enough exercise.
There’s no consensus about whether or not it’s safe or healthy to share a bed with your dog. Some animal behaviourists claim it isn’t a good idea, while others say there’s no problem with the practice.
Ultimately, it’s up to you to determine if you’re comfortable sleeping with Fido. Here are some pros and cons that may help you decide.
PROS
Being close to their pets makes people happier and calmer, which can translate to better sleep. Furthermore, you may feel
safer knowing that your dog is right by your side if there’s a middle-of-the-night emergency. And if you tend to get cold, dogs make great bed warmers.
CONS
While it’s rare, dogs can transmit certain diseases to humans. Unfortunately, sharing a bed makes it more likely that you’ll get sick from your canine companion. In addition, sleeping next to your pooch can exacerbate allergy symptoms because allergens tend to stick to their paws and fur. Finally, dogs that have a tendency to be dominant may become even more so when sleeping in bed with their owner.
If you do decide to allow your dog to sleep in your bed, take some steps to safeguard your health. Bathe your dog at least once a week and schedule regular visits with the veterinarian to ensure that your pet is healthy and up to date on its vaccinations.
4 types of snakes that make great pets
Snakes are fascinating creatures, but they don’t all make suitable pets. If you’re thinking about getting your first one, here are four breeds that would be ideal.
1. Corn snakes. Thanks to their docile but curious nature, these snakes make great pets. Though they can grow up to five feet long, they stay slender, making them easy to manage. Also, they come in a variety of colours and pattern combinations and can be quite pretty.
2. Ball pythons. The most popular type of python, this breed gets its name from the ball it curls into when frightened. Since they’re fairly inactive, ball pythons can be kept in smaller enclosures than other, similarly sized species.
3. King snakes. These snakes are popular thanks to their docile nature, relatively small size and beautiful markings. The same goes for milk snakes, a subspecies of the king snake.
4. Rosy boas. Perhaps the least common snake on the list, this species nonetheless makes a great choice for a first-time snake owner. Rarely growing more than four feet long, these beautiful reptiles are known to tolerate handling well. However, they can live
for up to 30 years in captivity so be prepared to make a long-term commitment.
No matter what type of snake you prefer, look for one that was bred in captivity and not caught in the wild. They tolerate handling better, are easier to feed and are healthier to boot.
Look for these signs that the snake you’re bringing home is healthy:
• A firm, round body
• Eyes that aren’t cloudy (although a little cloudiness prior to shedding their skin is normal)
• A clean and whole tongue
• Shiny skin
You should also make sure they have no white dust on their body as it could be an indicator of snake mites.
The pros and cons of sharing a bed with your dog
The whistling housing pressure pot is steaming. Fewer homes are available for sale, and there are plenty of buyers. The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) said that the number of new listings of homes on the market has dropped by 5.8%. The number of months of inventory has trickled to 3.9%, and the housing supply is the lowest since 2003.
Homeowners are hanging on to their homes longer. Many seniors are taking a reverse mortgage on their property and continue to live there instead of selling and moving to a retirement home. Investors and speculators are sopping up the trickling supply of homes. Over 850,000 immigrants came in 2021, and about 1,050,000 in 2022. Builders are building fewer homes and, in so doing, limiting the supply. From these factors, prices will continue to climb despite the interest rate.
RE/MAX Canada president Christopher Alexander said, “If I was to make a prediction, I think the market’s going to pop again sometime around late April, early May.” According to the RE/MAX Canada president, increasing numbers of Canadians entering the housing market would create a ripple effect, and more people will enter the battle. Mr. Alexander’s prediction is accurate. Once a limited supply of homes is on the market, prices will continue to in-

crease.
It is becoming more difficult for first-time buyers to buy. I am working with a young couple who plans to buy their first home. The couple’s budget is around $750,000. We chose to look at properties east of Oshawa. The asking price for these homes is $699,000. The problem is that these homes are selling for about $950,000. There are about 15 offers on each house, and if a buyer decides to make an offer subject to a home inspection or obtaining finance, their proposal becomes be less appealing to the seller. With multiple offers, the seller tends to choose an offer without any conditions, a substantial deposit, and the best price.
The latest bouts of interest rate hikes have resulted in higher borrowing costs for homeowners, and many homeowners who cannot afford their mortgages will sell their homes. With more homes on the market, prices will fall. However, some homeowners increase their amortization period well beyond 40 years instead of selling. Amortization is an equal mortgage repayment system with a fixed end date. By extending their amortization, homeowners maintain their regular monthly payments and, as a result, manage to keep their homes.
Carolyn Rogers, Bank of Canada’s Senior Deputy Governor, said, “The banks are acutely aware that mortgages that are not getting paid down that are not getting amortized down is not a sustainable situation over the long run.”
Most mortgages have a 25-year amortization. With a 40-year payment option, most monthly payments go towards interest instead of the principal. Poorer families who cannot keep up with the in-
terest rate hikes choose the 40-year payment option and consequently will be the ones who are affected in the long run. Nevertheless, extending the amortization is better than selling the home and renting a property. For these homeowners, it’s best to revise your budget or get a second job to reduce the number of years it would take to pay off your home. Today’s sacrifice will bring prosperity later.
Most buyers are looking for modern homes. These homes are below the market value with an offer presentation date. The intent is to get emotionally charged buyers to outbid each other. I advise looking at homes that need to be renovated and have been sitting on the market for ten days or more. Sellers for these
homes will likely drop their prices, allowing buyers to arrange to finance and complete a home inspection. A buyer can then upgrade the house gradually. Another option for buyers frustrated with the GTA real estate market is to relocate to smaller towns. This move can be appealing if the buyers can work remotely.
There is a new trend where more than one family is living together. This way, they can share the expense. Instead of selling and moving to another home, many people are choosing to renovate and keep their homes. The demand for houses in GTA is high, while the supply is low. Do what it takes to get a home, or hang on to your current home. It’s a shelter against poverty.
Patio furniture: 5 criteria to make the right choice
Are you looking for the perfect patio set? To make the best choice for your needs, consider the following criteria when purchasing your furniture and accessories.
1. Use. Determine how you’ll use your patio set. For example, a comfortable armchair is a must if you want a spot to read and sunbathe, but you probably don’t need a large table. Ensure your setup has some side tables, chests or ottomans where you can put down a book or glass.
2. Comfort. Don’t hesitate to try out the chairs in the store. The presence or absence of armrests, the height of the chairs relative to the table, the number of possible adjustments and the depth of the seat are all characteristics that’ll influence your comfort level.
3. Available space. If your patio is small, choose chairs that can slide under the table or be folded or stacked. Multi-functional furniture, such as a storage bench or table with an extension leaf, is also a good choice.
4. Quality. Choose high-quality pieces that can withstand the whims of Mother Nature. For instance, ensure the cushions are UV and mould resistant. Looking for a set with an umbrella? Ensure the base won’t get carried away by the wind.
5. Materials. Wrought iron, aluminum, steel, wood, composite, synthetic rattan – the list goes on. Find out the advantages and disadvantages of each to make an informed decision. Weight, durability, style, maintenance, cost and weather resistance are just some of the factors to consider.
Happy shopping!
How to keep your lawn healthy
Do you want your lawn to look great all summer? Adopt these practices.
• Sharpen your lawnmower blades. Clean-cut grass grows back faster than grass that’s been ripped or torn.
• Leave the clippings on the ground. They’ll slowly release nitrogen. However, avoid leaving a layer thicker than half a centimetre. This will smother the grass.
• Mow more often but leave it longer. Cutting your grass to a height of six to eight centimetres promotes root development and grass density. It also makes the grass less vulnerable to drought.
• Water only as needed. Water your grass to a depth of about two and a half centimetres a week, including rainfall. Water in the morning to limit evaporation.
• Apply compost. This provides essential nutrients, stimulates root growth and increases resistance to diseases and pests.
• Overseed. Apply grass seed to your lawn between late summer and early autumn to ensure lush growth.
• Aerate the soil at the end of summer. This will improve water and nutrient circulation to the roots.
For expert advice, visit your nearest garden store and speak with a staff member.
Why fence off your land?
Whether you live in the suburbs, city or country, you have several reasons to consider putting a fence around your property. Here are a few.
• To create privacy. If you live near a busy street or want to block your neighbour’s view of your backyard, a fence with solid panels will help keep prying eyes at bay.
• To enhance safety. A suitable fence that’s impossible to climb limits access to your pool, keeping adventurous neighbourhood children out of harm’s way.
• To enclose an animal play area. A fence built high enough to match your pets’ jumping ability will give your little critters space to stretch their legs, without the risk of escaping.
• To provide a wind break. Minimize the impacts of heavy winds by building a well-anchored fence with closely spaced posts and sufficient gaps to allow some air movement.
• To minimize nuisances. A high, thick fence can reduce noise pollution, making your outdoor space more peaceful.
Do you want to install a fence on your property? Be sure to research local regulations, get the necessary permits and inform your neighbours of your plans.

Tips for reducing your monthly grocery bill
Looking for a way to reduce monthly expenses? Then your grocery bill is a good place to start. Here’s how to rein in your spending at the supermarket:
• •Go shopping less often. In general, people who only shop once every week spend less overall than those who make several smaller trips during the same period of time.
• Shop around. Find out what stores have the best deals and shop at those locations. Buy specific items at the stores where they’re the cheapest.
• Make a list. Always make a list of items that you need to help you avoid impulse buys. It’s also good to have a budget in mind as you shop.
• Pay in cash. If you struggle to stick to your grocery budget, take out money
to spend at the grocery store in cash and leave your credit cards at home. Having to pay with cash will force you to stay on budget.
With a little planning and self-control, you’ll be able to significantly reduce your food costs without sacrificing the quality of your meals.
Four tips that will motivate you to stay on budget
Budget troubles? Here are four ways to motivate yourself to meet your financial objectives.
1. Remember the reason you’re saving. Focusing on your goal (that trip to Hawaii or paying off your student loan) will motivate you to stick to your spending plan.
2. Tell people about your goals. Telling friends and family members about
your budgeting goals will keep you accountable. Surround yourself with people who will support you and help you make good decisions.
3. Track successes. Keep up your morale by setting short-term goals and recognizing small successes. Celebrate when you reach these milestones.
4. Allow for occasional indulgences. It’s important to allow some room in your budget for fun activities. It’ll help you
stay motivated, and you’ll be more likely to follow your budget over a longer period of time.
The point of a bud¬get is not to deny yourself every little indulgence but to curb your expen¬ses over time so that you can achieve your long-term goals. Spending moderately while keeping your eye on the prize is the way to do it.
Three tips for dodging financial peer pressure
Whether they’re encouraging you to spend more than you can afford or leaning on you for economic support, it’s important to learn to say no to friends and family members when you need to. Here’s how:
1. Be truthful. Be honest about your financial situation. Most people will respect you for telling the truth and support your decision to stick to your
budget.
2. Suggest an alternative. If your friends suggest an activity that’s too expensive, propose an alternative that’s more affordable. Similarly, if someone asks you for a loan, brainstorm other ways that they could come up with the sum they need.
3. Get support. Seek out family members and friends who are trying to save money. Surrounding yourself with
people who are also following a strict budget will keep you from spending unnecessarily.
Remember that wanting to keep your finances in order and stay out of debt doesn’t make you the bad guy. A person who has your best interests at heart won’t intentionally pressure you into a decision you can’t afford.
If you find yourself constantly struggling to pay off debt, save for the future or stay on budget, it may be time to schedule an appointment with a financial adviser.
Here are some situations where you should consider meeting with a financial adviser:
• You’re looking for help managing your debt and coming up with strate -
gies for paying it off
• You’re getting your finances in order to plan for a major lifestyle change (buying your first home, having your first child, preparing for your retirement, etc.)
• You’d like help setting a budget that will help you save for specific goals (making a down-payment on a house, buying a new car, a trip to Europe, etc.)
• You want to learn about the right investment opportunities for a person in your financial situation.
Although it may seem impractical to pay someone to help you with your finances when you’re having money trouble, working with a professional can help get you on the right track towards meeting your long-term financial goals.

How to drive in a construction zone
Although encountering an unexpected construction zone can be frustrating if you’re in a rush, you must follow specific rules to keep everyone safe. Here are a few tips for driving through construction zones this summer.
• Stay alert and calm. Limit distractions and be aware of your surroundings to reduce the risk of getting in an accident.
• Merge as soon as possible. Don’t wait until the last minute to merge into another lane to help improve traffic flow and limit delays.
• Slow down and pay close attention to
What you need to know about road rage
speed limits, roadway signs and flaggers. Be ready to follow traffic directions.
• Don’t tailgate. Double your following distance to give yourself more time to stop or react if something or someone suddenly moves into your lane.
Did you know the number of construction zones increases during the warmer months? Consequently, it’s a good idea to check traffic frequently and plan ahead if your usual route includes a construction zone. Find an alternate way or give yourself extra time to avoid unexpected delays.
Road rage can have severe consequences and lead to fatal crashes. That’s why it’s essential to take the necessary measures to remain calm while driving and know how to react if you’re the target of another driver’s aggression. Here are some things to keep in mind.
How to prevent road rage
Staying calm behind the wheel starts with good preparation. Give yourself enough time to get to where you’re going to avoid being in a hurry. That way, you won’t get stressed if the driver in front of you is moving too slowly, for example. It can also prevent you from making dangerous manoeuvres to make up time, provoking other drivers.
It’s also vital to limit irritants by following the rules of the road and showing common courtesy to other drivers. For
example, only honk the horn when necessary, use your turn signals, maintain a safe following distance and don’t cut off other vehicles.
Defensive driving tips
The golden rule? Resist the urge to retaliate and provoke an angry driver. Ignore them, or if you’re worried, go to a police station or public place. Above all, don’t pull over, get out of your car or go straight home, as you could be followed. Call 911 and describe the person and their vehicle.
Finally, remember that anyone can make a mistake and unintentionally do something frustrating or dangerous. If you do something wrong, apologize. If someone else does something irritating, take a few deep breaths. Getting angry is pointless and will only make things worse.
