Golf Maintenance News Greetings from your friendly Golf Maintenance Team! We have had an excellent kick off to the season here at the club. We are starting to see many of your smiling faces returning back for the season. We hope that you all are enjoying the start of summer here in the White Mountains. Mother Nature has not been very cooperative in terms of giving much rain so far, but the monsoon season will be here soon. We have had one rainstorm in the past 80 days with a rainfall total of .60". In addition to hot temperatures and coupled with the high winds, we are seeing some "hot spots" popping up on some of the tees, fairways, and rough areas. We are pumping a lot of water trying to battle the heat and preserve the health of our turf. Just as an example, with “normal weather conditions this time of year, we would pump roughly 900,000 gallons of water a night in watering the golf course; we are currently pumping 1.5 million gallons a night plus intermittent watering throughout the day by staff members watering hot spots with hoses and running irrigation in gaps in play in the amount of another few hundred thousand gallons of water. You might see a few portable sprinklers out on the courses, please do not run them over, as these are a good way for us to slow soak these overheated areas. Greens are getting closer to where we expect them. We are in the process of thinning them out by verticutting and topdressing. This opens the plant up to allow a better cut as well as promoting a healthy root system. The Cabin greens were done this Monday and we have seen an increase of roughly 1 foot on the stimp-meter already. The Tower greens are scheduled for the same treatment this coming Monday. We will continue to groom the greens as well; this process is a light verticut as well as mowing at the same time on the walking greens mowers. Tees and fairways will be mowed down tighter this week to .425" which is where we will remain for the rest of the season. We are going to have the Troon Vice President of Agronomy on-site this week. He will aid us in making some decisions to further improve course conditions and address any playability issues. A few other projects we are working toward completion on: #6 Tower Blue tee is healthy and growing well. It is being mowed down to tee height and will be open no later than the week of 4th of July. #13 Tower Blue tee is now open for play. Horseshoe pits at the Cabin are beginning to take shape. We are shooting for grand opening in the next couple of weeks. #12 Cabin greenside bunker was renovated this week and is beginning to settle in nicely. We hope this information helps you understand what is going on in the turf world at Torreon. Please remember to repair your ball mark and one more, rake your bunkers, and obey all on course signage. We are trying to maintain the native areas, so keeping your golf carts in the rough or on the cart paths instead of driving through the tall grass is greatly appreciated. Until next time, "keep 'em in the short stuff" and we hope to see you all out on the course. David Scharfen Director of Agronomy
