The Fire Was Quickly Contained
by: Teresa Miller
We at Total Local would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Eaton Rapids and Hamlin Township fire departments for their swift response to a fire that occurred on top of our building. On Saturday, October 19, the resident living above our office had a mishap while grilling, resulting in a fire that engulfed the upper structure. Thanks to the quick actions of the local fire departments, the blaze was rapidly contained, and no one was injured. We are deeply grateful that the situation was brought under control, preventing what could have been a much more serious outcome.
While the fire itself did not reach our office, there was some water damage and we were without power. The building was closed to address the damage and ensure safety, but Total Local remained open for business, while our team members worked from home.
Our thoughts are with the resident whose living quarters were affected. Unfortunately, the damage means he won’t be able to return to his apartment for some time. However, we are relieved to hear that he has another place to stay while he works through this challenging time.
We are also touched by the outpouring of support from our clients and the community. Many reached out with kind words and concern for our well-being. Thank you again to everyone who played a role in keeping us and our neighbors safe during this incident. Your efforts and kindness are truly appreciated.
While our move to new offices in Mason was planned before the fire, the recent events made it a little easier to say goodbye to our beautiful spot along the river. Our new office, located at 118 W Oak St, Suite 202, in downtown Mason, is somewhat smaller. However, with many of us working mostly from home since COVID, we weren’t fully
utilizing the space in Eaton Rapids. Additionally, the new location is closer to home for our owner, Teresa Miller.
We want to assure you that after our move we will continue to serve our clients in Eaton Rapids and remain committed to publishing Total Local Eaton Rapids in the coming year. This move allows us to operate more efficiently while still supporting the many Mid-Michigan communities where we provide marketing services and distribute Total Local publications.
Three Ways Dogs and Dog Owners Can Accomplish Resolutions Together
Provided by: Family Features
Anew year brings fresh opportunities for a lifestyle reboot, and as you set health goals for 2025, remember that your pet can embark on the journey to healthier living right along beside you. Whether you’re aiming to eat better, exercise more or find peace of mind, one of the best strategies for success is the buddy system - and your pet might be the perfect partner.
Consider these three ways you and your pet can work toward healthy habits together this year.
Many people find it challenging to stick to a gym routine and get the most out of that membership. However, there are countless ways to get exercise without relying on fancy gym equipment and working out at home means you can include your pet in the fun too. Even a simple walk or jog with your dog can be essential for vitality and well-being.
When you’re feeling ready for more adventure, head to a local park or hit the trails for an extra challenge. To keep
things fun, try a game of fetch in the backyard or visit a dog park to add variety to your routines.
Eating real, recognizable and nutritious foods is essential for both humans and pets. An option like Nature’s Recipe delivers premium, natural nutrition with added vitamins, minerals and nutrients for pets at every life stage. With more than 40 years of expertise, its dog food recipes are inspired by nature and designed for dedicated pet parents who demand the best in nutrition.
“We’re committed to our promise that every ingredient counts,” said Dr. Preston Buff, principal scientist, nutrition and animal safety, Post Consumer Brands and Nature’s Recipe’s Pet nutritionist. “Pet parents can trust we use only the best to fuel their dog’s health and happiness. By focusing on premium ingredients that promote vitality, Nature’s Recipe empowers dog owners to invest in their pet’s health. We aim to recognize and delight pet parents who dive into ‘research mode’ and want healthy, nutrientrich recipes.”
Quality time with pets has been shown to lower cortisol levels in humans, helping to promote calm and wellness, according to the National Institutes of Health. Whether it’s a walk through the neighborhood, playing in the backyard, a gentle grooming session or simply offering the occasional belly rub, spending time with your pet can bring a sense of peace and well-being.
As you and your pet journey together toward a healthier lifestyle in 2025, remember the path to healthy living is even more rewarding when traveled with a buddy. The Key to a Bright Future
by: Chad Van Dyke
When the air begins to cool and our mid-Michigan days shorten, we shift our energy toward activities that align with the changing seasons.
Grand Ledge’s vibrant community is always looking to stay active and engaged. In a time when our lives are as busy as ever, community engagement and extracurricular activities play a crucial role in shaping the lives of our young people.
Beyond the classroom, these activities provide invaluable opportunities for growth, development, and connection. Youth sports, dance, karate, 4H programs, and other local activities promote physical health and skill development, as well as fostering a sense of community and belonging. As young people participate, they build lasting relationships, develop important skills, and gain confidence that can last a lifetime. Our future remains bright when active minds are given the opportunity to shine.
When we look at our community recreation programs we see the work of Jen Daly, Community Recreation Coordinator, Grand Ledge Schools. Daly started the programs back in 2016 without a budget or equipment, and over time her hard work paid off. Today, Grand Ledge Community Recreation offers a total of 36 programs, ranging from youth soccer and football to wrestling and cheer.
We help make Grand Ledge an amazing place to live, work, and play. Our well-organized programs draw people in from all over, including outside of our community,” said Jen Daly, Community Recreation Coordinator, Grand Ledge Schools.
“We help make Grand Ledge an amazing place to live, work, and play,” said Daly. “Our well-organized programs draw people in from all over, including outside of our community.”
Our many athletic fields and parks provide excellent venues for members of the community to engage with their neighbors and with those visiting from outside the area. Many people who visit our community, for sporting events or other activities, find Grand Ledge to be a place where they would like to live.
“Families are looking for the full package when they are deciding on where to live, and I believe our Community Recreation Department is a key component to that,” said Daly.
Youth sports are more than just a way for children to stay active, they are a cornerstone of community engagement and personal development. Participation in sports helps children build physical fitness, learn teamwork, and develop a strong work ethic. All of these benefits extend well beyond the actual sport, influencing many aspects of personal growth and social interaction. When we consider the health and future of our community, a solid foundation built on youth engagement is crucial.
A modest beginning in the youth sports programs in Grand Ledge gave way to an explosion of interest and growth. This expansion is clear evidence of our need to continue fostering these activities.
“When I started Spring Soccer in 2016 we had just over 100 participants,” said Daly. “This past spring season, 2024, we had 996 participants, 78 teams and more than 100 volunteer coaches.”
Watch for updates to the recreation programs on the Grand Ledge Comets website and social media, as well as at our local schools. Dates, schedules, and associated costs of the various activities are all listed for the public. The funds that support our youth athletic programs are provided by the registration fees, which Daly does her best to keep as low as possible. Higher enrollment allows the program to lower costs for everyone.
“It’s important that we continue to offer affordable programs and not increase the prices to the point where families can’t participate,” adds Daly.
Engaging in sports offers many benefits for young people, enhancing their physical health, mental resilience, and social skills. Physically, it promotes well-being, helping children maintain a healthy weight and develop coordination. Mentally, our community sports programs teach valuable life skills such as discipline, perseverance, and strategic thinking. Equally important is the impact that participation has on their social lives. Engaging in a team environment encourages communication, teamwork, and leadership. Many of these relationships blossom into friendships that last a lifetime.
Extra-curricular activities like dance, karate, 4-H, and art offer unique benefits that complement or provide alternatives to traditional sports. These activities contribute to physical fitness, foster creativity, require discipline, and improve self-confidence.
Dance is a powerful force of self-expression and physical development. It encourages flexibility, coordination, and strength while also nurturing creativity and emotional growth. The sense of accomplishment and community created through dance is transformative and the art of dance is sewn into the fabric of our culture.
Local dance studios provide children and young adults with the opportunity to explore various dance styles from ballet to hip-hop. The programs often culminate in live performances that give students a chance to showcase their skills while gaining valuable self-confidence.
“When my oldest daughter discovered competitive dance in high school, she developed her passion and strong work
ethic, and it gave her purpose outside of academics,” said Amy Hoyes, Grand Ledge Chamber of Commerce Executive Director and longtime community resident. “She is now a junior in college and still dances in a company, and she also teaches classes at the same Grand Ledge studio where she was once a student.”
The impact of dance can last for generations to come. The family environment that our local programs provide goes beyond the steps, the moves, and the hours of practice. Local dance instructor and owner of Rising Star, Lori Arendsen, has been enriching our community for over 40 years.
“So many have shared with me that dance was an important part of their young lives, so much so that they are now bringing their children to dance with us,” said Arendsen. “We have the next generation growing up in our classrooms, and it is beyond special. Our young people find a home away from home with their dance family.”
Karate is an ancient martial art that focuses on self-discipline, respect, and physical fitness. It teaches children and people of all ages, discipline, self-defense skills, and mental focus. Local and nearby karate schools offer structured programs that help students build confidence, physical endurance, and mental resilience.
Through regular practice and training in karate, students gain technical skills and valuable life lessons. The supportive environment helps individuals learn to overcome challenges and to develop the discipline required to accomplish their goals.
The term “4-H” stands for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. These represent the organization’s focus on developing character, practical skills, and physical well-being. Started over 100 years ago, 4-H emphasizes hands-on learning and education by providing young people with opportunities to harness their skills. By developing these talents, young people go on to create and manage projects in their local communities.
Many people believe 4-H is only for kids who live on farms or are interested in raising and selling animals, but that’s not the case! 4-H, the largest youth development organization in Michigan, offers a wide variety of topics and activities for all interests. Locally, the Eaton County 4-H program is part of Michigan State University Extension’s Youth Development efforts, and it’s open to all youth ages 5 to 19.
4-H is run by dedicated volunteers and offers engaging programs that span a wide range of interests, from science and technology to clothing and textiles. These programs provide fun and educational experiences, equipping young people with lifelong leadership skills and laying the groundwork for their future success.
Crafting offers young people a unique way to express their creativity and develop valuable skills. By engaging in handson projects, children and people of all ages enhance their fine motor skills and attention to detail. These skills build confidence and improve problem-solving abilities. Crafting helps nurture well-rounded individuals by blending fun with learning, and offers a positive way for young people to connect with their community and discover their passions.
A local nonprofit formed in 1974, Ledge Craft Lane is an art cooperative that has been shaping the Grand Ledge community for more than 50 years. Its local crafting programs provide a supportive environment where you can explore various techniques—from painting and pottery to sewing and jewelry-making. Activities like these foster a sense of accomplishment and encourage imaginative thinking.
“Ledge Craft Lane provides art classes for all ages in its retail store downtown while also hosting the second longestrunning art fair in Mid-Michigan,” said Stephene Lapp, Ledge Craft Lane’s current President. “Come be creative with us in classes and workshops for beginners and experienced artists alike.”
From the wide range of programs offered by Grand Ledge Community Recreation to the creative outlets provided by local dance studios, karate, and 4-H clubs, our community provides many opportunities to continue the growth and development of our young people. Crafting programs further brighten our community by offering avenues for creativity and personal expression.
By participating in these programs, children and teenagers gain the skills and confidence needed to develop a sense of belonging and strong attachment to our community. As families and community members, supporting these local activities creates an investment in a brighter future for our children. Together, we build a foundation where every young person has the opportunity to develop, contribute, and shine in our thriving community.

Lower your energy bills and make your home more eco-friendly with these valuable rebates and programs.
by: Teresa Miller
With energy prices climbing and the effects of climate change becoming more apparent, it’s more important than ever for homeowners to find ways to save on their energy bills while reducing their environmental footprint. Thankfully, there are several energy rebate programs available to homeowners in Grand Ledge that can help you make your home more energy-efficient without breaking the bank. Through a variety of rebates offered by utility companies, as well as state and federal programs, you can upgrade your home, reduce your environmental impact, and lower your monthly costs.
When upgrading an existing home or building a more energyconscious home, the rebates from Consumers Energy can significantly lower the initial expense of switching to a more efficient HVAC system and appliances.
Thinking about replacing an old appliance? You can earn rebates by choosing ENERGY STAR® certified appliances, including refrigerators, clothes washers, and dishwashers. These appliances are designed to use less energy, which means you’ll save both on the initial cost through the rebate and over time with lower utility bills.
If you’re looking to upgrade your heating and cooling system, now might be the perfect time. Consumers Energy offers rebates for energy-efficient furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps. Upgrading to these high-efficiency systems can make a noticeable difference in both comfort and energy savings.
Poor insulation or old windows can lead to high heating and cooling costs. Consumers Energy offers rebates for upgrading insulation and installing energy-efficient windows, which can help maintain a more consistent indoor temperature and reduce energy usage.
For a relatively simple and effective upgrade, consider installing a smart thermostat. Consumers Energy offers rebates for these devices, which allow you to control your home’s heating and cooling more efficiently, even when you’re not home.
High efficiency water heaters are designed to use less energy while still providing reliable hot water for your home. Whether you’re upgrading to a tankless model or an ENERGY STAR® certified conventional unit, Consumers Energy’s rebates make it more affordable to switch to a system that can reduce your energy consumption and lower your utility bills.
“A typical rebate from Consumers Energy is $100 to $200; rebates are tiered depending on the efficiency of your installation,” said Pam Austin of Austin Heating & Cooling in Dimondale, Michigan. “Customers should know that approximately six weeks after we submit an application for our clients, a paper check will be mailed to the person listed on the account with Consumers Energy.”
According to Austin, there are other rebate programs available through DTE, HomeWorks Tri-County, Lansing BWL, and the Michigan Propane Commission. However, most homeowners in Grand Ledge are Consumer Energy customers. Also rebates only apply to new construction if it is a whole-home project. You should work with your builder to get all the details on the potential rebates for a new home.
A typical rebate from Consumers Energy is $100 to $200; rebates are tiered depending on the efficiency of your installation,” said Pam Austin, of Austin Heating & Cooling.
If you’re planning larger energy-saving projects, Michigan Saves could be a great resource. This nonprofit program

offers low-interest financing for energy-efficient home improvements. From adding insulation to installing solar panels, Michigan Saves makes it easier for homeowners to tackle energy-efficient upgrades.
Unlike some traditional loans, Michigan Saves financing doesn’t require you to use your home equity as collateral. This makes the program accessible to more homeowners, including those who might not qualify for other types of financing. Michigan Saves works with a network of approved contractors who specialize in energy-efficient projects and meet the standards required to offer Michigan Saves financing.
Michigan Propane Commission
Established to promote propane use and safety, the Michigan Propane Commission (MPC) supports energysaving initiatives across Michigan. Their rebate programs aim to make propane a more affordable and eco-friendly option for heating and other household needs, helping residents transition to cleaner, more efficient energy solutions.
The MPC rebates are available to homeowners for installing high-efficiency propane appliances like furnaces and water
heaters, as well as for adding or replacing propane storage tanks. By taking advantage of these incentives, homeowners can lower their energy costs and enhance the comfort and efficiency of their homes.
Federal Rebates Through the Inflation Reduction Act
Grand Ledge homeowners can also benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act, which offers federal rebates for a range of energy-efficient home improvements. These rebates cover projects like installing high-efficiency electric appliances, heat pumps, and whole-house energy upgrades. It’s a great option if you’re considering significant energysaving investments.
While federal rebates help reduce the cost of energyefficient upgrades, they are not tax write-offs. These rebates are direct incentives that reduce the upfront cost of energyefficient installations.
However, there are federal tax credits, like the Residential Clean Energy Credit, that allow you to claim a percentage of the costs for certain energy-saving improvements, such as solar panel installations. These tax credits can be applied when filing your taxes to directly reduce your tax bill. Combining rebates and tax credits can result in significant savings for homeowners making energy-efficient upgrades. It’s always a good idea to consult a tax professional or review IRS guidelines to ensure you’re taking advantage of any relevant credits or deductions.
Many HVAC, window, insulation, and solar contractors will handle the rebate application process for you as part of their service. Be sure to ask your contractor if they can assist with applying for any available rebates.
“We provide information about any potential rebates with our estimates,” said Austin. “Since it can be confusing for homeowners, we will fill out the application and provide all of the necessary documentation for rebates on behalf of our customers.”
If you’re a do-it-yourselfer or you want to explore your options, follow the instructions provided for eligibility and application steps. Each program may have different application processes.
Step 1 Check Out Available Rebates: Look into the rebates offered by Consumers Energy and other programs to find out which ones apply to your planned home upgrades.
Step 2 Purchase and Install the Products: Buy the energy-efficient products and have them installed.
Step 3 Submit Your Application: Complete the application process with the necessary documentation, including receipts and proof of installation.
Step 4 Receive Your Rebate: Once approved, you’ll receive your rebate as a check or credit on your energy bill.
Grand Ledge homeowners have excellent opportunities to make their homes more energy-efficient and save money through a variety of rebate programs. Whether you’re upgrading appliances, improving insulation, or installing a smart thermostat, these programs make it easier and more affordable to invest in energy-saving improvements. Talk with your contractors and visit program websites (see the article in the sidebar on the previous page) to learn more and get started today!
Cost-Effective Projects Buyers Will Love by:
Teresa Miller
The real estate market in 2025 is predicted to be both exciting and competitive, with buyers looking for homes that are not only move-in ready but also offer value and charm. For homeowners preparing to sell, making strategic, cost-effective upgrades can significantly enhance your property’s appeal and ensure a strong return on investment (ROI). Buyers tend to make decisions based on emotion and practicality, so it’s crucial to strike the right balance between aesthetics, functionality, and value.
From enhancing curb appeal with simple landscaping to refreshing your kitchen and bathrooms with budget-friendly updates, these projects are certain to make a big impact. Modern flooring, energy-efficient improvements, and opening up spaces can make your home feel more inviting. A fresh coat of paint, updated lighting, and strategic staging will further elevate your home’s appeal, ensuring it’s marketready and irresistible to potential buyers.
Imagine pulling up to your home for the first time. What do you notice? The curb appeal is your home’s handshake — it’s the first thing buyers see and often sets the tone for their entire tour. Enhancing your exterior doesn’t have to mean major landscaping overhauls. Start with the basics depending on the season, like mowing the lawn, raking leaves, or keeping the snow shoveled. Keeping the outside neat and tidy creates a lasting first impression.
In spring and summer, plant colorful flowers, add native plants that require minimal upkeep, and freshen up garden beds with mulch. Ideas you can do year round to add inviting touches include: installing solar-powered pathway lights, painting the front door a welcoming color like navy blue or deep red, and replacing worn-out house numbers or mailboxes. Freshly painted shutters and trim can also enhance the overall appearance of your home, making the
exterior look well-maintained and polished. These affordable updates invite buyers to step inside and can deliver a high ROI.
“People become blind to small repairs that need to be made around their home, such as torn weather stripping around a garage door or chipped and peeling trim,” said Steven Eyke, owner at LaFollette Custom Homes. “Walk through your home with a fresh set of eyes. Have a friend visit who hasn’t been over for awhile and have them point out things that need fixing or updating.”
Buyers love kitchens — it’s the space where families gather, meals are shared, and memories are made. But kitchen renovations don’t have to mean tearing everything out and starting fresh. Focus on smaller, impactful updates:
• Cabinet Facelift: Repaint cabinets in a fresh, neutral color like white or light gray and replace hardware with modern handles or knobs
• Backsplash Upgrade: Install a timeless subway tile backsplash or a budget-friendly peel-and-stick option for a quick refresh
• Fixture and Appliance Refresh: Swap out old faucets, light fixtures, or even a dated range hood with sleek, modern alternatives
These updates can give your kitchen a whole new look without the hefty price tag. Also doing a thorough job cleaning, decluttering, and organizing can make your kitchen more appealing to potential buyers.
“Open the refrigerator, microwave oven, and cupboards, and make sure they are clean. People want to know a home was well taken care of,” said Amy Kruizenga, realtor at Vision Real Estate. “A house that is neat and clean, first and foremost, sells.”
Bathrooms are second only to kitchens in importance to buyers. Simple touches that are cheap and easy to make, only requiring a bit of elbow grease, and can create a clean, relaxing atmosphere.
Brighten up tile and bath room fixtures by cleaning or replacing caulk and existing grout lines. Replace your towel bars and install modern faucets and showerheads. Add a spa-like feel by replacing an old mirror with one framed in wood or metal. Replace dim lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting above the vanity. Creating a fresh, updated bathroom can make your home feel more luxurious without requiring a full remodel.
Flooring has a major impact on how buyers perceive a home. Current buyers are drawn to durable, eco-friendly options like luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or engineered hardwood. These materials are affordable, stylish, and easy to maintain — ideal for busy families or pet owners.
If you’re dealing with worn-out carpets, consider replacing them in key living areas with updated flooring options. Even
refinishing hardwood floors can provide an excellent ROI, making your home feel fresh, modern, and move-in ready.
As sustainability continues to dominate conversations, energy efficiency is no longer a “nice-to-have” but a musthave for many buyers. Making your home greener can be as simple as sealing windows and doors to prevent drafts, upgrading to a smart thermostat, and replacing old lightblubs with energy-efficient LEDs.
For a bit more investment, consider adding attic insulation or upgrading to Energy Star-rated appliances. Not only will you attract environmentally conscious buyers, but you’ll also be able to highlight lower utility costs — an attractive feature for any homeowner.
Buyers are looking for homes that feel spacious and versatile. If your home has small or awkward rooms, consider opening things up by removing non-load-bearing walls to create an open-concept living area. Rearrange furniture to maximize flow and natural light. Stage spaces like a home office or gym to demonstrate their potential. Even small changes, such as
decluttering and removing oversized furniture, can transform a room and make it feel larger.
Never underestimate the power of paint and good lighting. A freshly painted, neutral-color can make any space feel larger, cleaner, and more inviting. Popular and versatile shades include warm whites, soft beiges, and gentle grays. These hues not only appeal to a broad audience but also allow buyers to envision their personal style in the home.
Bright, well-lit spaces feel more welcoming and spacious. Replace dim or outdated fixtures with modern designs and add smart bulbs or dimmers for versatility. Provide additional lighting in key areas like the kitchen, bathrooms, and living room to showcase your home.
Perhaps the most cost-effective way to prepare your home for sale is to declutter, deep clean, and stage it to highlight its best features. Remove personal items, excess furniture, and anything that might distract from the home’s potential.
Hiring a professional stager can be an excellent investment, but do-it-yourself staging with carefully chosen furniture and
decor can work just as well. Make each room feel functional, inviting, and ready for buyers to imagine themselves living there.
“Everyone runs out of time and has a list of projects that they want to get done before putting their home on the market,” said Kruizenga. “By contacting a real estate agent early in the process, you can make better decisions about where your effort and money will make the most sense.”
This year, buyers are looking for homes that feel modern yet timeless, eco-friendly, and adaptable to a range of lifestyles. Showcasing spaces that are functional, energy-efficient, and move-in ready is key to making a strong impression. Having a friend who can give you an honest opinion of repairs that need to be done and working with a real estate agent early in your process can help you decide where to focus your time and attention.
Selling your home in 2025 doesn’t have to mean pouring thousands of dollars into renovations. By focusing on strategic, cost-effective updates, you can create a home that buyers will fall in love with while maximizing your ROI. With a little effort and a clear plan, your home will stand out in the competitive market and have buyers lining up to make an offer.

If your family suffers from the winter doldrums, a dose of sunshine may be just what they need. Give everyone something special to look forward to this year by planning a vacation that appeals to kids, parents and grandparents alike.
Leaving the country for breathtaking views and relaxation at the world’s beautiful beaches may provide the boost of vitamin D you need, but it also requires a little extra preparation compared to the average road trip. Ensure your memory-making excursion goes off without a hitch by doing the legwork in advance to avoid unnecessary stress.
Plan your winter getaway with these tips for an elevated experience.
As you prepare for your next adventure, planning ahead is essential to ensure a seamless experience, especially when traveling internationally and for long-haul trips. Whether you’re seeking a dreamy beachfront destination or a European vacation, collaborating with a travel advisor as your first step in the planning process can significantly enhance your trip since they provide expert help and ideas tailored to your preferences. One of the key advantages is that their services typically come at no cost to you, allowing you to relax while the experts handle everything from finding the best deals to managing essential travel requirements, such as country entry guidelines and passport regulations.
Once you’ve settled on a location, it’s time to go over the lodging options with your travel advisor. Whether you’re looking forward to digging your toes into the sand or craving a little adventure, it’s always best to identify what matters most for your trip. Researching resorts that offer a true “all-inclusive experience” can help ease stress and keep the focus on family fun. Consider stays at Sunscape Resorts & Spas, which offer features like a kid’s check-in experience, welcome treats, connecting rooms and more, all designed to “Press Play” on Unlimited-Fun. This way, your family’s needs and wants are covered - with best-in-class service, all access restaurants, unlimited drinks and a supervised Explorer’s Club for Kids while teens have their own space at the Core Zone Teens Club.
One way to maximize your resort stay is to sign up for hotel loyalty programs, like World of Hyatt’s loyalty program, to earn rewards and benefits that can go toward free nights, exclusive member rates, upgrades and more. Plus, travel advisors who book directly can input your loyalty information to help ensure you get the most out of your getaway.
Travel advisors commonly visit locations and resorts, so they know the destinations inside and out. Ask your advisor if he or she has traveled to your desired vacation spot and consider the expert advice offered, from must-have meals to recommended attractions and excursions.
One way to make memories that last a lifetime is to explore any special family packages that are available at the time of booking. For example, Sunscape Resorts & Spas is offering exhilarating getaways perfect for the kid in everyone with the Press Play on Fun package available through Dec. 20 for travel through Aug. 16, 2025.
It includes a delightful welcome amenity and exclusive gift, breakfast in bed, a reserved spot by the pool or beach and a family photo on the beach to capture all those smiles. The resorts take family fun to the next level in vibrant, colorful beachfront locations in Mexico, CuraÁao and the Dominican Republic.
If you’ve ever traveled so much as an hour or two away from home, you know how important a checklist is to avoid leaving behind any must-haves. A trip to the beach calls for an entirely new set of essentials.
If you plan to spend time at the beach (or pool, for that matter), consider adding these items to your suitcase:
• Swimsuits
• Sunscreen
• Bug spray
• Hat and sunglasses
• Beach- or pool-friendly shoes
• Goggles
• Books or magazines
• Beach bag
• Reusable water bottle or tumbler
• Waterproof phone case
• Cash for tips

Good sleep isn’t just about waking up feeling rested and ready for the day. Quality sleep, and plenty of it, is important for your overall health. While you sleep, your body naturally recharges itself, which puts you at lower risk for cardiovascular problems and chronic conditions like diabetes, as well as improving your immune system.
Sleep also contributes to better brain function, memory, concentration and lower stress. According to the National Institutes of Health, most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep every night to achieve maximum health benefits.
If you’re falling short of the recommended amount of sleep, you may be able to make some adjustments that help you reap the health benefits of better rest. Learn what you can do to improve your sleep with these tips from the experts in safer, healthier sleep at Naturepedic.
Your body’s natural circadian rhythms are closely aligned with light and dark. When your body senses light, it sends signals to your brain that it’s time to be awake. Light also suppresses your body’s production of melatonin, a hormone linked to sleep. Cutting back on bright lights and avoiding devices at least an hour before bed can tell your body it’s time to wind down, and sleeping in a dark room promotes better rest.
Your mattress plays a major role in your comfort through the night, so making sure it fits your needs is an important step toward getting better rest. Take control of your comfort with a quality mattress such as Naturepedic’s EOS (Ergonomic Organic Sleep) mattress, which is handcrafted and made
without polyurethane foam, formaldehyde, flame retardants or fiberglass. The breathable layers of certified organic cotton, wool and GOTS-approved latex ensure better temperature regulation while naturally contouring the body. An added feature is the ability to customize each side of the bed by opening the zippers and adjusting the layered components for the perfect comfort combination.
Sheets that are too stiff, scratchy or otherwise unpleasant make it nearly impossible to settle in for a good night’s rest. Higher thread counts tend to be softer, higher quality sheets. However, you may need to experiment to find which material suits you best.
When you’re too hot or cold, your mind tends to focus on those sensations rather than allowing you to slip into a slumber. Set your thermostat at a comfortable temperature, adding fans or adjusting the layers of bedding as necessary to achieve the perfect level of cozy comfort.
If you’re a light sleeper, noise can wreak havoc on your rest. Many people find sound machines offer two key benefits: They provide a soothing sound, such as rain or ocean waves, that allows you to relax and ease into slumber and constant background noise, so additional sounds are less disruptive.
Sleeping in separate beds or rooms is a choice made by many couples, but results show it has less to do with the health of the relationship and more to do with quality sleep.
According to a survey by Naturepedic, more than 40% of couples who share a bed reported that sleep issues have caused them to question their relationship. Snoring, conflicting sleep schedules and different temperature preferences were frequently cited as concerns. However, motion transfer and mattress comfort were also reasons people said they miss having their own beds.
A bed that allows each person to customize their comfort can alleviate those problems. For example, Naturepedic’s EOS mattress allows you to adjust the layered components inside to achieve the perfect comfort combination on each side.
That’s potentially good news for couples who sleep apart, as 33% of respondents reported having different mattress firmness and softness preferences, which ultimately led to their decision.
“When it comes to sleeping together, these survey results bring to light how critical personalized mattress comfort is,” said Barry Cik, founder and technical director of Naturepedic. “Luckily, you don’t have to choose between having a good relationship or a good night’s sleep.”
