The Hands-On Route to Success
By: Teresa Miller
Deciding on a career path is a significant decision, but if you’re inclined towards hands-on work that yields immediate, tangible results, the skilled trades are worth considering. These professions are not just jobs; they are critical roles that keep society running smoothly and offer personal fulfillment, financial stability, and numerous other benefits. Students in Leslie may embark on a journey in pursuing a career in the skilled trades in a variety of programs available through Career and Technical Education (CTE).
Pursuing a career in the skilled trades can be a smart, rewarding decision. Skilled trades people are always in high demand due to the essential nature of their work, which includes construction, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and more. The persistent need for these skills means that job security in this sector tends to be robust.
Variety, a sense of accomplishment, and financial considerations contribute to high job satisfaction in many of the skilled trades. Working in a trade often means no two days are the same. The work can involve different locations, varied projects, and unique challenges, which keeps the workday interesting and dynamic. There is a unique satisfaction that comes from crafting or repairing something with your own hands. Additionally, skilled trade jobs often offer competitive salaries that are comparable to or even exceed those of jobs requiring a four-year college degree.
“Michigan’s employers are seeking to fill skilled trades positions more than ever before,” said Jamie Engel, Executive Director for Career & Technical Education at Ingham Intermediate School District. “The shortage of trained workers in fields such as manufacturing, construction and automotive is expected to continue through 2030. Students who take advantage of Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs, such as those offered at the Wilson Talent Center in Mason, can leave high school workready, often with on-the-job training through work-based learning experiences or apprenticeship opportunities.”
Other financial advantages for skilled trades people include the opportunity to work overtime and the opportunity for advancement. Skilled trades people can advance in their careers by increasing levels of certification and specialization, by moving into management and supervisory roles, or by going into business for themselves.
We hear regularly from students that they ‘learn best by doing’ and that’s what these programs allow them to do – learn in a handson environment,” said Jamie Engel, Executive Director for Career & Technical Education at Ingham Intermediate School District.
For those who prefer active, engaging work environments over desk jobs, skilled trades provide the opportunity to work with their hands, solve practical problems, and see tangible results. Here are just a few of the fields available in the skilled trades:
• ELECTRICIAN: Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical power systems in homes, businesses, and factories, ensuring that electricity is safely and efficiently brought to every device that needs it.
• PLUMBER: Plumbers install and repair pipes and fixtures that carry water, gas, or other fluids in residential and commercial settings. They are critical in designing systems that effectively manage water and waste.
• CARPENTER: Carpenters construct and repair structures, buildings, and homes. Some work as builders, others as remodelers, or they may also build custom furniture and cabinetry.
• HVAC TECHNICIAN: HVAC technicians work on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems that control the temperature and air quality in buildings. Some work in commercial buildings and others service or install equipment in homes.
• WELDER: Welders use equipment to join metal parts, fixing and fabricating metal structures, tools, and vehicles across a variety of industries. Welding requires a steady hand and precise attention to detail.
• HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR/MECHANIC: Heavy equipment operators work with large machinery and vehicles used in construction, mining, agriculture, and other industries. They also need to know how to maintain, and repair heavy equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, excavators, and loaders.
• AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN/MECHANIC: Automotive technicians diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicles. They work on engines, transmissions, brakes, and other mechanical and electrical systems.
From electricians wiring up our world to plumbers ensuring our water runs smoothly, skilled tradespeople are the backbone of our infrastructure. But how does one get started in this fulfilling line of work? High school CTE programs serve as a launching pad, providing students with the practical skills, industry connections, and career readiness needed to thrive in the trades.
CTE programs provide students with hands-on experience and exposure to various occupations, helping them discover their passions and strengths. Juniors and Seniors at Leslie High School who are interested in the skilled trades attend high school for a half day. Then they attend a skilled trades CTE program for a half day at the Wilson Talent Center in the construction trades, welding technology, automotive technology, engineering technologies, or precision machining technology. The Wilson Talent Center also offers CTE programs in a variety of other fields including health care, cosmetology, criminal justice, and culinary arts.
Embrace the opportunity to make a lasting impact in your field by supporting Career and Technical Education (CTE) at the Wilson Talent Center! They are actively seeking industry experts to serve as guest speakers, mentors, and advisors.
Here’s how you can leverage your professional knowledge to shape the future workforce:
• Join a CTE program advisory committee
• Engage as a guest speaker
• Arrange student tours or job shadowing experiences
• Provide apprenticeships, internships, and job placements
Learn more about the Wilson Talent Center at www.inghamisd.org/wtc/. For information about getting involved, call 517-244-1330.
“In addition to the work-based learning experiences that allow students to see first-hand what the world of work will look like, CTE students have the opportunity to earn state and national industry certifications, making them a more valuable employee,” said Engel. We hear regularly from students that they ‘learn best by doing’ and that’s what these programs allow them to do – learn in a hands-on environment.”
From using tools to mastering technical knowledge, students gain practical skills directly applicable to the workforce. Through the Wilson Talent Center’s partnerships with local businesses and professionals, these programs offer networking opportunities and real-world insights. Each program helps to prepare students for immediate employment and further education. Some offer industryrecognized certifications.
With a solid foundation from CTE programs, students seamlessly transition into the workforce or pursue advanced training. Armed with practical skills, industry connections, and a clear career path, they can enter careers in the skilled trades, shaping the world around them one project at a time.
Choosing a career in the skilled trades isn’t just about finding a job—it’s about pursuing an occupation that offers stability, satisfaction, and meaningful impact. High school CTE programs serve as the first step on this journey, empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and connections needed to succeed in the workforce. Whether you’re wiring circuits, welding metal, or building structures, the world of skilled trades awaits—ready to welcome you into its ranks.
A Comprehensive Guide to Financing Your First Home
By: Teresa Miller
Owning a home is a dream for many, and turning that dream into reality requires careful planning and smart financial decisions. Financing your first home can be a complex process, but with the right knowledge and steps, you can navigate the journey with confidence. In this article, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to make your homeownership dreams come true.
Before you dive into the world of mortgages and loans, it’s crucial to assess your current financial situation. Start by reviewing your credit score, as it plays a significant role in determining your eligibility for a mortgage and the interest rates you’ll be offered. Obtain a credit report from a reputable agency and address any discrepancies or issues.
Next, calculate your debt-to-income ratio, which is the percentage of your gross monthly income that goes toward paying debts. Lenders often use this ratio to evaluate your ability to manage monthly payments. Aim for a ratio below 43%, as it is generally considered a healthy benchmark.
Once you have a clear understanding of your financial health, establish a realistic budget for your home purchase. Consider your current expenses, future financial goals, and potential changes in income. Your budget should not only cover the mortgage but also factor in property taxes, homeowners’ insurance, maintenance costs, and potential homeowners association fees.
Take advantage of online calculators to estimate monthly mortgage payments based on different loan terms and interest rates. This will give you a better idea of the price range you can comfortably afford.
One of the most significant financial hurdles for first-time homebuyers is the down payment. While some loan programs allow for lower down payments, saving as much as possible can open up more options and reduce the overall cost of your mortgage.
Experts recommend aiming for a down payment of at least 20% of the home’s purchase price to avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI) and secure better loan terms. Create a dedicated savings account for your down payment and explore government programs or employer-sponsored assistance that may help you save more efficiently.
With your finances in order and a down payment in the works, it’s time to explore mortgage options. There are various types of mortgages, each with its own advantages and considerations. Common options include fixed-rate mortgages, adjustable-rate mortgages, FHA loans, and VA loans.
Compare interest rates, loan terms, and closing costs from different lenders to find the best fit for your financial situation. Don’t hesitate to consult with mortgage professionals who can provide personalized advice based on your needs.
“Our primary focus is on education. We can evaluate your financial circumstances early in the process, discuss how to enhance your credit, and help you select the most suitable mortgage option,” said Kaitlyn Beno, a Mortgage Loan Originator at Fifth Third Bank. “Many people don’t have a 20% down payment, and while there are various programs available to assist, our role is to guide you in choosing the mortgage that best fits your specific needs.”
Our primary focus is on education. We can evaluate your financial circumstances early in the process, discuss how to enhance your credit, and help you select the most suitable mortgage option,” said Kaitlyn Beno, a Mortgage Loan Originator at Fifth Third Bank.
Once you’ve identified a suitable mortgage option, seek preapproval from your chosen lender. This involves providing detailed financial information and undergoing a credit check to determine the maximum loan amount you qualify for.
“Obtaining a pre-approval letter not only strengthens your position when making an offer on a home, but it also clarifies your budget, ensuring you focus on homes within your financial reach,” said Beno. “It’s crucial to avoid spending time considering properties that are beyond your budget.”
Armed with a pre-approval letter and a solid understanding of your budget, you can start the exciting journey of finding your dream home. Work with a real estate agent who understands your preferences, and explore neighborhoods that align with your lifestyle and future plans.
Consider the long-term aspects of a property, such as its resale potential, school districts, and proximity to essential amenities. Don’t hesitate to attend open houses, ask questions, and gather as much information as possible before making a decision.
When buying a home, making your offer stand out to sellers is crucial, especially in competitive markets. It can be discouraging when houses are selling for thousands of dollars over asking price and many are all cash offers. Even if you don’t have cash, but are preapproved for a mortgage, there are other ways to strengthen your offer.
“You might waive contingencies like the home inspection, be flexible on closing dates, or give more earnest money,” said Stacee Robison, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. “Some more creative ways include an escalation clause or an appraisal gap guarantee.”
An escalation clause in your offer can automatically increase your bid in response to competing offers, ensuring you don’t overpay yet remain competitive up to a maximum limit. Additionally, including an appraisal gap guarantee is a commitment that you will cover any difference between the offer price and a lower appraised value, providing reassurance to sellers that the sale will proceed as planned.
Using these strategies can significantly enhance your offer’s attractiveness to sellers, potentially making the difference in securing your dream home.
Once you’ve found the perfect home and your offer has been accepted, it’s time to navigate the closing process. This involves finalizing the mortgage, completing a home inspection, and ensuring all necessary paperwork is in order.
Review the closing costs carefully and be prepared to cover expenses such as attorney fees, title insurance, and property taxes. Work closely with your real estate agent and mortgage lender to ensure a smooth and successful closing.
Financing and buying your first home may seem like a daunting task, but with careful planning and the right steps, you can turn your homeownership dreams into reality. Assess your financial health, set a realistic budget, save for a down payment, explore mortgage options, get preapproved, find the right home, put in a competitive offer, and navigate the closing process. By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to unlocking the door to your dream home and enjoying the many benefits of homeownership.

In recent years, Leslie has experienced a surge in local entertainment options. The establishments that participate and often facilitate the entertainment are about serving great food and fostering a vibrant community. Their significant impact on the local business landscape is a testament to the unwavering support and pride that the community has for its local businesses.
Strolling through downtown Leslie, greeted by music from a local restaurant or the lingering scent of trendy eats, a vibrant community overtakes the senses. Live music adds a unique vibe for those enjoying a meal or a cold brew. Events like the Ducking Around Jeep Run or the Fall Festival bring playful excitement to the mix.
On weekend afternoons and evenings, and sometimes even on weekdays, vehicles line the streets, which is evidence of a good time had by people of all ages enjoying all that the community has to offer. And the best part? These experiences are entertaining, affordable, and accessible, ensuring everyone can be part of the fun.
Stepping into Boss Cider Co. is a sensory delight. The air is filled with the enticing aromas of zesty barbeque, hearty seasoned meats, and various ciders. This family-owned and operated restaurant offers a unique dining experience, from its diverse appetizers and unique entrees to its selection of 28 taps with rotating beers, seltzers, and wines.
We know that there’s a definite need in the community for great food establishments and entertainment,” said Jim Every, owner of Boss Cider.
The frequent live music adds an extra layer of entertainment to the lively atmosphere, making it a must-visit for those seeking a memorable dining experience. Guests can relax on the spacious outdoor patio with an ice-cold cider float and a mouth-watering brioche bun burger. All while enjoying the music of local artists like the father-daughter duo Matt and Kaelee Foreman and up-and-coming artist Cooper Johnson.
“We strive to host local bands,” said Jim Every, owner of Boss Cider. “And, we’re always open to helping new people out; to give them an opportunity.”
The interior and ambient lighting create a relaxed atmosphere for diners seeking a classy yet fun experience. The spacious indoor area is also available for artists to perform. In the winter, Boss Cider Co. offers a unique and beloved feature for patrons of all ages — cozy igloos on the patio. With comfy seating, these igloos provide a warm and intimate setting, perfect for enjoying a meal or drink with friends or family.
“We know that there’s a definite need in the community for great food establishments and entertainment,” said Every. “We’re always coming up with new options to keep everyone entertained. For example, this fall, we are bringing back the chili cookoff with the addition of a hot wing contest.”
Across the street, Crossroads Grill & Bar offers a unique sports bar scene with tempting food options, including halfpound Angus burgers, Mexican platters, wraps, finger foods, and intriguing daily specials.
In addition to leaving with a full stomach, patrons can enjoy games, such as pool and various arcade games. The drink menu is equally diverse, ranging from beer to cocktails. Crossroads features special menus on specific days, such as Southern dry rub BBQ on Saturdays and a Friday night fish fry.
The variety of food, games, and drinks at Crossroads ensures something for everyone. Crossroads owner Rachel Schumaker said she’s planning some fun things in the future, such as live music and trivia nights. Currently, the restaurant offers a spacious room for hosting parties and gatherings. The space accommodates up to 80 people.
“Options such as a taco bar, wraps, or salads are perfect for these types of events,” said Schumaker. “We are always willing to work with people to cater to them and make their special day perfect.”
The space fills a gap, as people often seek air-conditioned or heated, convenient places to hold baby showers, wedding showers, birthday parties, or company parties. Additionally, Crossroads caters outside events like graduation parties or weddings.
The savvy restaurateurs behind these establishments have realized that by adding a dash of entertainment to their menu, they’re cooking up a recipe for success far beyond their kitchens. This mindset transforms the local dining scene from merely dining out to a memorable experience.
As active members of the Leslie community, Crossroads and Boss Cider hosted the second annual 2024 Ducking Around Jeep Run. Each drew in hungry Jeep lovers with special event menus. Hundreds of people lined over 150 Jeeps up at Awaken Haunt, just a short jaunt away, where vendors, food, music, and a blessing of the Jeeps kicked off the fun-filled day.
The Jeepers then stopped at participating destinations, which included bars in Jackson, Pleasant Lake, Dansville, Mason, and Leslie, to receive their rubber ducks and enjoy each establishment’s food and drink options. Crossroads was a participating stop. They set up their Southern dry rub BBQ outside and featured fun drink specials.
Once people collected a duck and card punch from each location, they finished at Boss Cider to turn in their punch cards to win prizes. Boss served up live music and a lively hangout atmosphere in which participants could end the night with more food, drinks, and fun. This event, and the participation of these local businesses, is a shining example of the strong community spirit in Leslie, a spirit that everyone can be proud of and that goes above and beyond merely running a restaurant.
“When you’re a small business, collaboration and partnership in events is the only way to make it work,” said Every. “Working together, we all win.”
Another unlikely local business contributing to the community’s entertaining culture that draws in people from near and far is Awaken Haunt. Even though it’s located near US 127, Awaken Haunt is not just about the scares, but also about community involvement, making it a unique and valuable part of the Leslie entertainment scene.
While it is known for its terrifyingly fun haunted attraction in the fall, it is also an active participant in several events throughout the year. Awaken and Boss frequently team up for immersive events, such as the Mardi Gras Murder Mystery, the Leslie Halloween costume contest, and the zombie walk. Their Love Bites! Valentine’s event this past February consisted of a total
Crossroads is not only a place to stop and eat, but… a place where we have watched this community grow and flourish…,” said Rachel Schumaker, owner of Crossroads Bar & Grill
blackout haunt and dinner at Boss Cider. And, they hosted shock illusionist Dan Sperry’s thrilling, sold-out magic shows.
Owner Brian McVay emphasized that while they prepare for the Halloween season, they enjoy helping local businesses and supporting the community. Awaken Haunt works with the local community sponsoring events, supporting their neighbors, and bringing more traffic to the area.
“The Halloween season only comes around once a year,” said McVay. “We are involved in events year round that help other local businesses, support our community, and keep our name out and about.”
They’ve also hosted events at Awaken for the Leslie Area Chamber of Commerce as well as the Jackson and Mason chambers. Supporting non-Halloween-related events puts them front and center as a standout contributor to the community.
From live music on the patio at Boss Cider or memory-filled nights with friends at Crossroads Grill & Bar, to getting your scare fix at the Awaken Haunted Attraction and pop-up events in between, there’s a diverse range of entertainment options to explore in Leslie. Low cost, or no cost options like Leslie’s Fall Festival, are thanks to area businesses that enjoy contributing to a fun and entertaining community that locals and visitors can enjoy.
“Crossroads is not only a place to stop and eat, but a space that provides a safe after school stop for local kids, a place where we have watched this community grow and flourish, and a fun place to go where you will most likely know everyone you see!” said Schumaker. “None of it would be possible without the great town of Leslie.”
