Can you believe it, one more month and we’ll all be living and breathing show season again? Before the onslaught of all things exhibition takes over our lives, we have plenty of stunning projects and features to keep you in the loop. Here at TL, we love to research new projects – they’re the best way to see what’s going on, who’s doing what, how, and what with. And in this issue, we feature projects as diverse as lighting Carlsberg’s distribution centres and BMW’s stand at the Geneva Motor Show. They may both involve lighting and transport, but that’s where any similarity ends. Where one is all about energy saving and functional illumination for a workplace, the other is very definitely all about good looks – and boy, did Peter Heilig make those Beamers look good in Geneva! I’m delighted to say that TLs new event lighting section is going from strength to strength, and August brings news of lighting for live events on stage and screen, where the lighting designer needs nerves of steel as the call of ‘lights, camera, action’ echoes. TL has interviewed a bit of a character this month Laurence Titton of Visual Energy learned his craft at the back end of the ‘80s lighting raves in Brixton and then honed it drinking Red Bull for a living before exploring the potential of architectural lighting. Not perhaps the most usual route into the industry, but certainly one that’s seen him build a very successful career - and interestingly, one that’s allowed his artistic talent to flow, rather than become stifled. I hope you enjoy meeting him as much as I did. We’re also lucky enough to have managed to get six experts from the US around a table to discuss market analysis, design trends and challenges of lighting with the ubiquitous LED. Experts from Cyntech Components, Diodes, Intersil, LED Engin, RS Components and Verbatim all took time out to share their views and ideas during a candid discussion event. As with most things in life, what happens in the US today tends to be what we can expect tomorrow…. Enjoy. Gill Anderson Editor

Floodlight Konica Minolta Sensing believes its illuminance spectrophotometer will make a major contribution to quality of lighting. The CL-500A was developed for evaluating light sources including LED and EL lighting. It measures the special irradiance waveform and can provide measurements of the CRI of a light source. The CL-500A is the first portable illuminance spectrophotometer to conform to both DIN and JIS standards. One application is the measurement of CRI and light levels of street lighting, particularly new LED systems. General manager, Paul Bowman said: ‘The human eye’s perception of brightness is influenced by the spectrum of the light source. By using LED lighting, lighting designers are able to create a more efficient, brighter environment with a better quality of light. ‘The spectral sensor of the new CL-500A makes it possible to accurately measure both indoor and outdoor LED lighting, allowing users to compare different light sources based on real values.’ It can measure CRI, colour temperature, spectral irradiance waveform and peak wavelength, using the built-in display, so no PC connection is required.

JUST ANOTHER

QUESTION...

A passion for rock music, an artistic background and a desire to create led to a rare talent being unleashed onto the world of lighting. This month, TL chats to Visual Energy’s Laurence Titton How did you find yourself heading up a lighting design company?

Titton is driven, there’s no doubt about it. He firmly believes that he, and those he’s training to take over the world of lighting design, can make a difference to the lives of the people who are lucky enough to experience his work at first hand – and I have to agree with him.

LT: ‘My mother was an artist; she taught art and I was influenced by art from a young age. Then, when I was in my mid- to late-teens and rebelling at school, I discovered music. Just at the time when my mother told me it was time to either get my head down at school and do some work, or go out and get a job, I went to a Pink Floyd concert. The lighting was amazing, and I decided there and then that I wanted to do that. ‘Wisely or not, when I got home, I told my mother I was going to get a job, which of course meant paying rent too.’

So music was a big influence on your work in the beginning? LT: ‘Yes. I do believe that if you’re going to be influenced by something, there’s nothing better than an ‘80s Pink Floyd concert to set you on your way in life. At the time, my then girlfriend’s father worked in the music industry, and I told him what I wanted to do. He gave me a book – I remember it was called The Big White Book, and it had music companies, PRs, lighting companies, everything to do with rock and roll. He said: “Here’s the lighting section, here’s the company you need to phone,” and he left me to it. ‘So I phoned them. I said: “Hello, I’d like a job. I’m young, enthusiastic and I want to work for you.” Amazingly, even with no qualifications, Varilite (now PRG) took me on. My very first job was cleaning cables that had been used at Glastonbury. So I sat on a box, aged 17, cleaning cables for £5 an hour. This was good!’

You were literally left sitting on a box? Was that usual? LT: ‘The box was a test. If you stayed on it and cleaned cables, you didn’t get to stay in the job, but if you got off the box and asked questions you moved on to cable testing – literally sticking

one end of a cable into a socket, then the other, and checking whether a light came on. That led to pressing a button, which led to operating a fader … in those days, that’s how we were taught. It was the birth of the entertainment lighting industry. ‘I was fairly quiet as a teen, but after a week or so, I discovered that asking questions led to people opening up and explaining their own job, so I got off the box and started asking, interfering and playing around with whatever equipment I found, playing with different materials.’

Playing? They didn’t mind you playing with the equipment? LT: ‘Luckily, no. I still play with everything today – it drives my wife nuts! I firmly believe that if we lose our childlike ability to play, we lose the ability to develop, so it’s really important to hang onto it – and I did. ‘This was in the late ‘80s, the rave industry was just getting going, and I was sent to one by Jim Duggan – mainly because I liked the music rather than because I could light one. I went onto the rave on the Friday, met the team, helped put up the lighting rig up, stayed up all weekend and had a blast. And all for free! At around 2am on the Saturday, the guys went off to bed and left me to run the lighting, which is where I learned the theory of timing and the effect of the lighting and music on the audience. ‘I stayed with Varilite for a number of years, touring around the country to raves, programming lighting desks, all learned though questioning those around me. A bit like Columbo, asking questions. I’m still like Columbo too – “Just got one more question…” However, I really didn’t like smelly tour buses, and decided to move on.’

That must have been quite a wrench. So why leave what you’d had fun doing? LT: ‘I realised around then that formal education was the only way I was going to get to the top of my game, so decided to apply to

Bournemouth for a computer animation course. They turned me down, which was a bit of a shock, but it made me realise I needed to focus, so with my mother’s help I did a foundation course in art, followed by a degree in animation. I have a fullblown 2:1 honours degree in animation – the old hand-drawn stuff, not computer animation! ‘Straight out of university, I was asked by Robbie Williams’ lighting designer to do the video animations for his show. Back in the rock and roll game, but not really what I wanted, so I moved on again, and after a stint at Red Bull, which was then in its infancy, and a great place for fun working, I went to do some training at the Lighting Industry Federation. I realised that what I’d really like to do was architectural lighting.’

So quite a departure from rock bands, raves and racing cars? LT: ‘Yes, but still playing with light. What I always say is that was the Formula One of lighting design, and we’re the Ford Fiesta – or possibly the Bentley these days! Formula One is all over in two hours. But with architectural lighting, we put them in, they’re very sturdy, we expect them to last, and they last a very, very long time. ‘But there’s still a correlation between how light makes people feel, and going back to day one, when you pressed the button at a rave and people jumped, is the same as someone walking into a room and thinking: “Wow, that’s a cool space to sleep/eat dinner/work.”

So where next? LT: ‘From there, I developed Visual Energy in 2001 – in a cupboard - which has been going from

14

‘Straight out of university, I was asked by Robbie Williams’ lighting designer to do the video animations for his show’ strength to strength ever since, and we’ve been doing bigger and bigger projects around the world. I still take the influences from theatrical lighting and use them in my work though.’

Young British lighting designers – the next crop. What do you think of their training, their ability, their talent? LT: ‘This is interesting. We’re trying to employ a youngster right now, and it’s been really tough. We’re having problems because the education system isn’t teaching the process of learning. The purity of university teaching now is missing that element. You don’t need a computer to pass a degree in my world, but it’s drummed into students to the exclusion of all else. In the real world, that’s not the skill that we need. We need the ability to communicate, follow instruction, start at the bottom – and sketch! ‘It’s not easy, but over the time we’ve been here, we’ve had six or seven really talented individuals, who’ve really appreciated the time, the input into their future, and who’ve gone on to do great things.’

What about interns. Do you use them? LT: ‘No. I have a problem with the concept. I don’t think it values young people. Why should I expect them to work hard – to care – when they’re not being paid. It reduces their worth. I have an issue about getting something for free – you don’t value it. We did try, but we got a really bad response.’

Who’s your one to watch from the next crop of designers? LT: ‘I don’t have one. I think it’s important that I watch my own company, my own staff. I don’t want to copy anyone else, so while I’m aware of what others are doing, I want to avoid doing what anyone else is. I watch the industry as a whole.’

What’s your favourite project?

Above right:Khasab Fort - Mussandam, Sultanate of Oman

LT: ‘I have many favourites, but what I like to see at the end of a project is people enjoying what I’ve done. I’ve come a long way from flashing strobe lights at a rave to lighting someone’s home, and giving them something they love, can enjoy and can play with. It’s also pretty amazing to stand in front of an hotel in the Middle East when the lights are switched on, the fountain bursts into life, and everyone is congratulating you. ‘I’m doing amazingly big projects now, but I still remember the buzz of doing someone’s little house in Notting Hill, and the buzz when they moved in. ‘Having said that, I have a favourite design for lighting the corner of the stairs that I’ve repeated.’

So, almost a Titton trademark then? LT: ‘Yes. I still use it. As a designer, you realise that you’ve got something that works, and you do replicate it when the situation is right for it – a bit like an artist sticking with a basic colour palette. ‘The basics for me are light bulbs. The tools I used ten or even 20 years ago are still the same. I paint with light, which is why my artistic training helps.’

and direction. She was an artist, art teacher and had small exhibitions. ‘It’s not so much lighting that inspires me but architecture and art. There is a structure to what we do, and how we work – there has to be to produce the work, but the creative element - the art is what makes it special.’

LEDs. Many people are still very anti. What’s your feeling? LT: ‘I think a lot of lighting designers are very anti. Let’s start with the myth of the LED. It’s like the king’s new clothes … some idiot in Whitehall tells us that LEDs are better than sliced bread, but when you switch them on, they don’t do the job. ‘Why? It’s brand new, emerging technology that we really don’t yet understand the structure of. Every LED product is currently different from the next, meaning the structure is missing to integrate. There’s no synergy yet. ‘In the meantime, we’re using metal halide, but putting in the control gear to enable LED or OLED replacement – when it becomes available. We’re at the dawn of light bulbs here …’

We’ve had a great insight into the work you do – and how you go about it. Thank you for taking time out to share some of your work with us. Just one final question, can you sum up Laurence Titton for us? LT: ‘Visual and energetic!’

Who, or what inspires you? LT: ‘My mother. She was – and is – an amazing artist, who was never really appreciated in her time. I realise now that she lacked focus

The technical generation The new generation of 4W and 7W Mini Zenigata series from Sharp features efficiency of up to 91lm/W, a higher luminous flux of up to 585lm (typical), and is available with a CRI value of 82. The new generation is based on a small plate made of technical ceramics (aluminium oxide Al2O3) with dimensions of 15mm x 12mm x 1.6mm. The new generation of 4 and 7W arrays is characterised by four properties: they are compact, lightweight, economical and noticeably brighter than before. The new generation of 4W arrays has a forward voltage of 9.6V with a constant current of 400mA, whereas the 7W arrays have a voltage of 12.3V with a current of 520mA. The 4W arrays, however, can also be operated with an increased constant current of 500mA, thus making them capable of reaching a luminous flux of up to 400lm. With the 7W arrays, a luminous flux of up to 830 lumens can be reached, if they are operated with a current of 680mA. The colour temperatures of the new white-light LED arrays range from 2,700 to 6,500 Kelvin’s, with the shades ‘natural white’, ‘warm white’ and ‘pure white’. The very smooth surface of the ceramic underside makes it possible to attach modules easily and safely on a suitable heat sink, in order to achieve efficient heat dissipation.

COLLABORATING FOR GOOD Marl International has been appointed as a preferred supplier of energy efficient industrial LEDs, floodlights, architectural and security light ranges for Edmundson Electrical Limited. Commenting, David Stewart, business manager at Edmundson, Barrow in Furness, said: ‘Demand for LED lighting is growing very rapidly amongst our customers, who recognise that it is both energy efficient and long lasting, often eliminating the need to replace lamps during the life of an installation. Marl is a pioneer in this field, with a forty-year history of producing high quality LED products. Adding them to our supplier base is in line with Edmundson’s strategy of sourcing from premium quality branded suppliers, and supporting UK manufacturers where possible.’

A GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY

news

Honeywell ED&S has called for a worldwide switch to LED lighting, claiming that organisations – large and small – have a responsibility to seriously consider energy-efficient lighting in the drive to combat climate change and save energy. With lighting representing, on average 21 percent of a building’s total energy consumption and accounting for 19 percent of global energy production, the company believes a switch to LED lighting could now be one of the biggest drivers of energy savings. To aid companies that pledge to investigate the technology, Honeywell ED&S has launched a free global consulting service. Through consultations, site surveys, devising bespoke lighting schemes, producing detailed energy and cost saving calculations and offering pilot installations, the company aims to arm facility and energy managers with a rigorous energy saving and ROI assessment before making an investment. ‘It’s been predicted that LED technology could dominate the lighting market by 2015 – but it needs to be sooner,’ commented John Storey of Honeywell ED&S. ‘Currently, around two thirds of lighting is based on older, energy wasting technologies developed before 1970 – this is not sustainable. ‘Until now though, the lighting industry has failed to deliver a much superior proposition to be used for general high-quality lighting in almost all applications. But we’re at a turning point. LED lighting is the most exciting thing since the electric light – and every bit as revolutionary. However, we recognise that the key issue for facilities and energy managers is justifying the initial investment to switch – that’s why we’ve launched our global consulting service, and our online energy calculator to empower them with answers to questions about the long-term return on investment through energy and cost savings.’

Embassy savings Cree has announced its participation in a series of energy efficiency renovations across US embassies in Vienna, Rome, Berlin, Madrid and Lisbon. The installation of interior and exterior LED lighting is part of a programme spearheaded by the Alliance to Save Energy and The League of Green Embassies, a US Department of State initiative to promote international cooperation in energy efficiency and clean technology. The range of products installed at each residence varies according to its needs, but energy savings compared to the old lighting ranges from 45 to 76 per cent, which can have significant economic impact. Older lighting is being replaced with energy-

efficient LED versions for security, indoor, walkways, parking areas and roadways. ‘The goal of the League of Green Embassies is to make each participating embassy as energy efficient as possible, and to use these embassies as platforms for showcasing US energy innovation technologies and products,’ explained Bruce J. Oreck, US Ambassador to Finland. ‘We want to encourage companies to create and showcase for a global market the latest technologies that reduce energy waste and lower costs.’ The completed installations are expected to be unveiled throughout 2012. The embassies will host a VIP and press reception and exhibition to provide guests a firsthand look at recent upgrades in the embassy.

DON’T

PANIC

Following the ban on incandescent lamps, European legislation is currently being drafted to phase out poor performing reflector lamps, including the lower end halogen reflectors. Contrary to some reports in the media, this new legislation does not mean that a whole lamp type is to be phased out. Neil McLean, SBU leader halogen, for Havells-Sylvania across Europe clarifies the situation

YOU

may have read about the end of halogen lamps in the media recently. In fact, the emphasis of this draft legislation is on ‘poor performing’ lamps - and anyone concerned about achieving energy efficiency targets and providing consumers with efficient and affordable ‘green’ light sources will welcome this initiative. The proposed EU ban only refers to those low lumen output lamps, which have exceeded the maximum energy efficiency index of 0.95. Therefore, even after the Stage 3 phase comes into force in 2016, those lamps that do not exceed 0.95 - for example higher performance MR16 lamps - can continue to be sold as long as they meet the minimum life requirement of 4,000 hours. The legislation is expected to be published in the official ‘Havells-Sylvania is journal of the EU, towards still lobbying for final the end of the year and the modifications to the first effects will come into legislation to ensure force about nine months that it is effective, later (stage 1: September realistic and workable’ 2013). From this we expect that between 2013 and 2016, the European Commission will phase out the poor performing (and least efficient) low voltage halogen lamp types, including poor performing GU10 mains voltage lamps. There is no forced end date for the most environmentally and energy efficient halogen reflector lamps. In line with previous legislative protocol of this sort, a step-wise approach will be taken, which means that the process starts with the poorest performing lamps, and proceeds, working upwards until only the best lamps remain. There will be a review of the directive in 2015 to ensure the toughest requirements planned for 2016 are workable and realistic.

20

As a member of the ELC, Havells-Sylvania (HS) is still lobbying for final modifications to the legislation to ensure that it is effective, realistic and workable in terms of ensuring the needs of markets are met (with regardcost and performance); and manufacturers can keep up. HS supports the EU targets of 20 per cent energy reduction by 2020, and recognises that, as part of the lighting industry, it can contribute by not only supporting legislative measures, but also by providing a portfolio of innovative, marketleading, energy efficient products in LED, CFL and top performing halogen. These products, in addition to supporting the achievement of the 2020 targets, will invariably also bring end users lower cost of ownership through reduced replacement and energy costs.

POSITIVE TL is delighted to bring you a round table debate from the US on market analysis, product design trends and future challenges of LED lighting

Q. To begin, can you give us an idea of how quickly the LED lighting sector is growing? CHROBAK-KANDO: LED lamps account for less than four per cent of the lighting market. The small market share is down to price differences against traditional light bulbs. Pricing is still the biggest challenge for LED lighting to become fully commercialised. The price of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) is around $1.99-2.66, while LED light bulbs cost around $20. Market penetration is expected to rise dramatically to ten per cent when the price difference narrows to less than tenfold. According to market research firm Strategies Unlimited, the LED market is forecast to exceed $5billion in 2012, which equates to a compound annual growth rate of 28 per cent between 2008 and 2012. HEMMINGS: Yes, I agree there is huge potential for LEDs. The global forecast for the lighting market alone is $20billion by 2020, with LEDs creating at least 70 per cent of the revenue as incandescent and fluorescent lighting are gradually phased out due to their respective inefficiency and environmental impact.

Energy efficient lighting

While LCD monitor, TV LED-backlighting and mobile display applications are currently leading this growth, analysts are predicting that LED lighting will capture the market lead by 2014. Although perhaps one note of caution relating to the potential long-term growth of LED lighting is the concern over the future wide availability of rare-earth elements, which are used in many of the phosphors used in LEDs. The most common use today is the combination of a blue LED with phosphors to create a white LED. MELLOR: LED lights have a proven track record in replacing standard filament and discharge lighting in many applications. With high lumen-per-watt efficiencies now available, these are a real alternative to more traditional light solutions, offering end users greatly reduced energy costs – up to 70 per cent in some cases - long life and almost zero maintenance. This is especially important where access is limited and the cost of replacing a defective light unit is high, such as in industrial environments.

Q. In your opinion, which technologies offer major market potential?

MELLOR: We believe that niche solutions like aquaria and horticulture are a huge potential market. The price/payback models for replacement light systems are only now becoming viable from a purely economic perspective, but as the market expands and pricing competition increases, we expect to see a marked increase in the number of LED installations of this type over the next 12 months. For example, LEDs offer numerous advantages over traditional sodium lamps in a commercial crop environment. Sodium lighting is expensive to run, has a relatively short lamp life, and as with all traditional light solutions, generates a great deal of heat. Only a relatively small percentage of the total light output from a sodium light is actually useful from the plant’s point of view. LED matrix products, however, yield a huge improvement in energy Japan has become the world´s fastest efficiency, and trials have shown that plants growing market for LED lighting – it saw a grown under optimised LED lighting have massive surge of sales after the earthquake about 20 per cent greater leaf density than those grown using traditional methods. HEMMINGS: That’s right, horticultural lighting is an area poised for substantial growth. Plants are highly sensitive to certain wavelengths of light, resulting in increased chlorophyll absorption and photosynthesis when exposed to blue and red light. LED technology, as well as reducing energy consumption and offering a long working lifetime, can produce wavelength combinations tuned to the needs of each plant species for each stage of growth. From germination and vegetative growth through to flowering and fruiting, light can be used to control growth and development and optimise plant quality.

Q. Which markets are adopting LED lighting - and where do you foresee sales growth?

CHROBAK-KANDO: Japan has become the world´s fastest growing market for LED lighting – it saw a massive surge of sales after the earthquake in March 2011 caused power shortages. Industry sources indicate that many countries within Europe are also witnessing significant growth in LEDs.

Energy efficient lighting

The need to decrease energy consumption is the major driver of technology development. In Europe, approximately 19 per cent of energy consumption in commercial buildings is dedicated to lighting. Only space heating, at 32 per cent, consumes more energy. With respect to power savings, today´s best LED lamps offer energy savings of up to 80 per cent compared with incandescent lamps. RAMSDALE: By their very nature, LEDs are well suited to low voltage spot lamp applications. We are therefore seeing tremendous growth in MR16 downlights and emergency lighting as well as in flashlights. Diodes has developed a wide range of LED drivers that specifically target these applications. LED lighting’s low voltage characteristics also makes it ideal in ‘safe’ lighting applications, and this to some degree is driving its use in bathroom lighting as well as commercial refrigeration - where its ability to give constant brightness at low temperatures and over a long period of time far exceeds that of fluorescent tubes. SCHMITZ: And let’s not forget that high brightness LEDs should be able to pull ahead of fluorescents in popularity because they are solid-state - being made of silicon and not fragile. They are also very compact and contain no hazardous chemicals such as mercury, which can be found in fluorescent light sources.

Q. What are the current purchasing trends for LEDs?

SCHMITZ: The markets are different for coloured LEDs, IR LEDs, and white LEDs. This is great for purchasing trends, since the markets are so varied. These markets will only keep growing, as engineers and customers get comfortable with the benefits of LEDs.

HEMMINGS: Current sales figures by value show that IR LEDs top the order books at RS, in particular the medium to high power versions (for night vision use in safety and surveillance cameras, for example, which require a source of low-light illumination). Medium to high power white LEDs, suitable for general lighting applications, are currently in a very close second position, and with LED lighting on the brink of widespread adoption, white LEDs of all colour temperatures, warm and cool, are the focus of every major LED manufacturer. RAMSDALE: More fundamentally, fluorescent tubes will not start up reliably at low temperatures and so have to be constantly kept on. LED illumination in retail refrigeration offers ‘light on demand’ as well as a better CRI, enhancing the appearance of products on display. In these applications there is also a tendency towards simple cost effective solutions meeting separated extra-low voltage (SELV) requirements.

Q. What characteristics make a good quality LED?

JIANG: The relatively recent emergence of LED lamps has made things a bit more complicated, not least because the industry has tried to explain the performance of LED lighting in incandescent terms. Specifications usually include the power consumed in Watts and how that equates to an equivalent incandescent lamp. The measure for LED lighting is expressed as luminous efficacy, in lumens per Watt, which is presented as a measure of how efficiently a lamp converts electricity into visible light.

Energy efficient lighting

The construction of LED lamps is more complex than that of incandescent ones. They have different types of emitter, different substrates on which the emitters are mounted, different driver electronics, different optical focusing mechanisms, and different housings. All of these factors contribute to differences in performance. Using luminous efficacy as a measure of how good an LED lamp is can be totally misleading, particularly when it comes to directional lighting. What’s needed is a new way of defining luminous performance that takes into account the percentage of lux-on-target that’s delivered, not the total lumens produced by the module. True lux efficacy could perhaps be adopted to describe the useful lumens produced by an LED module – that light which illuminates the target area. Other factors, such as colour uniformity and light distribution still have to be considered, but lux efficacy would be a better measure than anything currently available. CHROBAK-KANDO: Another very important characteristic to take into account when selecting a LED lamp is its CRI. The CRI describes how accurately the light from a lamp reproduces colours of various objects compared with an ideal or natural light source. In practice, a tungsten halogen lamp is considered to have a CRI of 100. LED lamps based on blue chips plus phosphors achieve a CRI of around 80. Anything lower than 80 CRI is likely to give a distorted view of the world with respect to colour. Within a couple of years, LED lamps with CRI up to 98 are going to be available. Jiang: The emitter is key. Lighting designers are always looking for flexible and creative solutions for retail, commercial and architectural lighting, where consistent white light for directional and accent lighting applications is demanded. The secret is to find products providing high intensity light within a target area and deliver almost indistinguishable chromaticity variation from emitter-toemitter, and over time. SCHMITZ: In my mind, the best features are quick turn-on, low heat and a pleasant colour – some people prefer warm yellow light or cool blue light. The lesser-known feature is half angle. This is a measurement of how much the light from the LED spreads. A large half angle of 40 to 60 degrees disperses the light over a much wider area than a small half angle, like 15 degrees. The concentrated light provided by a small half angle needs a parabolic reflector inside the package behind the LED or a lens over it. This focusing is particularly helpful in an application like a flashlight or automotive headlight but less useful in a nightlight. Jiang: LED Engin offers products with beams up to 45 degrees wide but excels at narrow angles that are difficult for other LED sources to achieve. These benefits have already been demonstrated in

26

There are other obstacles to growth in LED lamps, such as the relatively high cost of the LED lamps themselves, and certain negative perceptions

demanding stage and studio lighting applications. In retail applications, these emitters enable fixtures to be made up to four times smaller than those based on metal halide light sources of comparable power, allowing lighting designers greater creative freedom. It is worth looking out for LED emitters that are thermally efficient, and typically dissipate heat effectively. This means that more electrical current can be driven into each die without causing damage or reducing operating life. The result is much higher light output for a given die size, the ability to house the emitters inside TIR lenses and products which enable lighting manufacturers to produce much more compact fixtures.

Q. What product design challenges hinder the growth of LED retrofit lamps? RAMSDALE: Lamp thermal management, how designs need to cope with very large amounts of conducted heat, and little radiated heat, a scenario that is very different to that of traditional lamps. The unique challenge of the LED is its conducted radiation. Traditional light bulbs generate 95 per cent radiated heat and five per cent light - for the LED it’s 20 per cent light and 80 per cent conducted heat. When the LED luminaire is used in a confined space, such as a sunken ceiling fitting, the heat is contained and the expected lifetime/reliability is impaired.

Energy efficient lighting

And so from luminaire design and lamp installation perspectives, this can be a further barrier to adoption. There are other obstacles to growth in LED lamps, such as the relatively high cost of the LED lamps themselves, and certain negative perceptions of energy saving lamps, primarily due to the poor performance of CFLs – they tend not to last as long as they’re supposed to: a function of the lifetime of the electrolytic capacitors employed. SCHMITZ: To switch to LEDs, customers are demanding high quality. They want designs with a power factor of at least 0.90 and an efficiency of 80 per cent or better. In DC applications, the maximum input voltage tops out around 40V. In AC applications, there might be 120V or 240V (maximum 277V) inputs. The LEDs must be driven by pulsewidth modulators running at frequencies in excess of 120Hz to minimise any visible distraction. To be truly competitive in the home Sometimes that frequency needs retrofit market, high brightness LEDs to be variable. In addition to these design constraints, both isolated need to offer a dimmable solution and non-isolated designs are used - depending on the engineer and the application. There are also other factors within the design to take into consideration, such as adjustments made for variations in magnetic components, chosen power components and output capacitors. To be truly competitive in the home retrofit market, high brightness LEDs need to offer a dimmable solution. A clever circuit can accomplish this. Remember that LEDs are driven by pulse-width modulating controllers. This means that they are not ‘on’ constantly. The amount that they are powered can vary through the use of a controller.

Q. What other lighting applications can benefit from the long life and high efficacy of LEDs?

RAMSDALE: One area that’s growing rapidly, especially in Europe, is automotive lamps. At first, LED-based automotive lamps were limited to luxury level cars, but we are seeing these migrate to “B” class cars. Primary lamps for conversion to LED lamps tend to be those that are on for long periods of time, as they consume the most power. Legislation though has also driven the use of daytime running lamps (DRL’s) in cars and efficiency requirements have pushed these towards LED solutions. Also the flexibility of LEDs has allowed a certain amount of styling and brand differentiation for vehicles. Start-Stop technologies in cars, designed to increase their efficiency and reduce pollution emissions in urban conditions has led to LEDs being the only credible way of maintaining constant lamp brightness in such scenarios. Most DRLs tend to be strings of LEDs that require either a boost or a buck-boost topology LED driver. SCHMITZ: The efficacy of the light source is similar to the efficiency. How much of the energy going into the lamp is turned into light as opposed to heat? Higher numbers are always preferred and high brightness LEDs provide this. Honestly, almost every lighting application can benefit from using LEDs.

NVC +44 (0)121 457 6340 | www.nvcuk.com NVC launches LED emergency products NVC has launched the SYRACUSE range of LED emergency products. These are stand-alone non-maintained miniature LED downlights. Conventionally, in a school or office one would install modular fluorescent fittings, a proportion of which would be converted (at some expense) to emergency versions. Instead, one can now install 100% standard modular fittings and a small number of the SYRACUSE non-maintained downlights. This is a more flexible and energy efficient approach to emergency lighting for offices, schools and commercial premises. They are available in 3W and 5W versions.

PHILIPS LIGHTING 31 40 275 7805 | www.lighting.philips.com Eindhoven, the Netherlands - Philips introduces the Fortimo LED line 2 Row High Voltage within Fortimo LED Line family The Fortimo LED line 2R system with 2 rows of LEDs on the module is designed – similarly to the earlier introduced 3R system – to produce high efficient, pure white light for general lighting applications where diffuse lighting on the horizontal plane is key. The 2R LED line system, as well as the other products within the Fortimo LED line family, is characterised by breakthrough high energy efficiency levels. The Fortimo LED line 2R has an energy efficiency of 129 lm/W @ 4000K, clearly surpassing fluorescent lighting systems at the lowest possible cost. To create a perfect combination between LED module and driver, all products within the Fortimo LED Line family have been designed to be operated with the Xitanium Indoor linear driver portfolio. The portfolio includes isolated and nonisolated drivers in fixed light output, 1-10V and DALI versions. The LED Line 2R system is a high voltage system operated with the non-isolated drivers. Different multiples of LED line modules rising up to 12 can be driven by one driver. As with all Fortimo modules, the LED line system falls within the Philips future proof promise, where by future LED energy efficiency upgrades do not change the LED line module dimensions, lumen output or colour temperature. The design of the Xitanium drivers is built around operating windows, which ensures the future proofness of the system.

HARVARD SHORTLISTED

Sensio Lighting has created an illuminated display board to facilitate displays of its latest product range in retail outlets without the need for a full kitchen mock-up. The package is available in freestanding and wall-mounted formats, to allow use in most showroom situations. The board allows most products to be displayed and tested, including: HD LED triangle; HD LED 24V recessed/surface; HD 24V recessed/surface; HD LED Click Slideline system with HD LED round and square lamp; HD LED 2020 linkable strip light; HD LED flexible strip; 4 x LED Dot IP44 round plinth light pack; and the Quadra LED under-cabinet light.

Harvard Engineering has been selected as a UK national finalist for the 2012-2013 European Business Awards, and will compete for National Champion status in the next round of the competition. The European Business Awards is widely recognised as the showcase for Europe’s most dynamic companies, identifying some of the region’s brightest businesses, based on their ability to demonstrate the three core principles at the heart of the Awards programme – innovation, business excellence and sustainability. The Awards are dedicated to raising the visibility and progress of companies that excel in delivering innovation twinned with successful commercial results whilst acting responsibly and positively affecting the social environment they operate in. John McDonnell, Harvard Engineering MD commented: ‘We are really excited and proud to be representing the UK in the European Business Awards. It is an honour to be recognised as one of the leading companies in the UK, we are looking forward to the next round of the competition.’ Harvard will now have to submit a video entry for further assessment by the judging panel, as well as for voting by the public. The business with the most votes in each nation will automatically gain National Champion status. Adrian Tripp, CEO of the European Business Awards, said: ‘Over the past six years we’ve received an incredibly high standard of entries from organisations that are passionate about their business. However, very few get the chance to fly the flag for their country and compete across Europe to be recognised as one of Europe’s leading companies. ‘It really is an exceptional accolade to be picked as a national finalist, and together with our sponsors and supporters we’re looking forward to seeing Harvard in the next round.’

Working together Osram and Hess have agreed to a strategic cooperation, whereby each will contribute its key core competences to step up the pace of development in new LED module solutions for outdoor lighting and increase the impact of LEDs on international markets. ‘Earlier exchange of information during product development ensures the seamless integration of new LED modules, electronic control gear and light management systems into

luminaires’, explained Christoph Hess, CEO. ‘This is important to being competitive on the market for higher-wattage applications.’ The first step in cooperation will involve Hess’ use of Osram’s SSL LED module. It will complement Hess’ already successful LED module portfolio. For Osram, the cooperation with Hess provides an opportunity to exchange information and discuss how LED modules integrate into lighting products

early in the development stage. It also offers Osram the chance to use the experience Hess has acquired through international projects. Hess’ international LED projects provide excellent insight into the requirements of international markets and constitute a basis for future development projects in the US and Japanese markets. ‘Hess, on the other side, will benefit as a strategic development partner from the

leading edge technologies of Osram,’ commented Dr. Alfred Felder, sales director of Osram. ‘To succeed on the market, a standardised LED module for street lighting must have excellent optics, perfect thermal management, a versatile driver and a carefully thought out replacement and maintenance concept.’ According to Felder, Osram’s objective is the marketing of standard interoperative LED modules.

ighting for public buildings can be a bit of a minefield – H&S issues alone are often enough to make designers run for the hills. Then add in the challenges of multi-use facilities and of course juggling to please committees with fiscal and decision-making power, user groups and maintenance teams, and the task gets trickier still.

Mi casa, su casa

COLOUR ME HEALTHY

The decision by the maintenance team at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center to replace 126 traditional 1000-watt quartz fixtures with just 50 Iluminarc LED-fitted exterior lighting solutions, has saved an estimated $21,000 in annual operating costs. Thirty-six Ilumipanel 180 IP and 10 Ilumipanel 90 IP building washers – each with a throw of more than 500 feet - now bathe the building’s crescent-shaped limestone exterior in colour changing light. In addition to saving energy and minimising costs, staff wanted the ability to change the colours of the façade to promote and support different health care initiatives, so for example, they hoped to use a red wash for National Heart month, blue for National Autism Awareness month, or pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month. To achieve this goal, lighting designer, Scott Chmielewski of Digital Media Designs was enlisted to pre-programme a series of custom scenes for events and initiatives planned. For example, during Fourth of July celebrations, the center hosts the Hershey Symphony Orchestra, and while it performs on the lawn, the crescent-shaped building facade becomes a red, white and blue backdrop. While researching different energy-saving opportunities, building

Buildings in use by the public – whether for learning, worship, government or leisure – come in all shapes, sizes, ages and styles, but all need specialist lighting in order to fulfil their primary use, while ensuring those using them are safe. Many have historical significance too, all adding to the dilemma of getting the lighting right

product range to solve various lighting challenges specifically within the retail industry. However, Merchant Taylors’ provided us with our first project for the education sector’. Best known for its work in lighting and visual display solutions for retailers – in fact, at the time the company had never worked outside the retail arena - the team rose to the challenge, designing a two-metre wide light track system with surface mounted track and directional spot lights, which was installed five metres above the stairwell. This allows the school’s in-house maintenance team to lower the entire lighting system safely and easily via a remote control, to clean, re-lamp and reposition the spotlights. Langley Denhard, buildings manager at Merchant Taylors’ commented: ‘The system offered us a functional way of lighting the memorial plaques, which resolved the Health & Safety issue regarding safe access to clean or re-lamp the fittings, without the expense of specialist scaffolding or a hydraulic platform’.

‘Energy consumption was a concern, coupled with the idea of changing colours on the façade’ systems analyst, Kevin Kanoff found the ideal lighting solution at LightFair in Philadelphia. He discovered that Iluminarc’s LED fixtures, when compared to the previously installed incandescents, will significantly reduce the annual wattage usage from over 337,000 kilowatthours at an annual operating cost of over $26,000, to just over 70,000 kilowatt-hours at an operating cost of approximately $5,480 annually. ‘Energy consumption was a concern, coupled with the idea of changing colours on the façade,’ agreed Kanoff. ‘The LED fixtures were the ideal choice to achieve both functions in one lighting solution.’ SEAT OF LEARNING

When the 450-year old independent school, Merchant Taylors, needed a lighting system specifically to highlight the memorial plaques in the school’s War Memorial clubhouse, H&S immediately became a key issue. The two plaques to be lit were sited on the wall over an open staircase, posing a challenge when it came to maintenance and cleaning. Contractor for the project, Bannister & Co, called on EcoRIG for some expert help. Andy Phillips, the company’s creative director explained: ‘We have worked hard at developing the

SHINING LIGHT

Across the Atlantic, Mankin Media Systems (MMS) of Franklin, Tennessee has helped Chattanooga’s Silverdale Baptist Church find a cost-effective lighting solution for its 2,000-seat auditorium. Initially, the church had planned to build a new auditorium, but funding shortfalls required significant budget cutbacks, so MMS was tasked with figuring out how to retrofit its lighting design into an existing room. The company worked with structural engineers to design a catwalk in order to add lighting capabilities to the pre-existing space, while lowering the ceiling for a more intimate feel. However, the main challenge was a limit on the electrical supply since the cost of increasing capacity would be enormous. Power consumption therefore became a major consideration. The solution MMS engineered was to specify LEDs for house and performance lighting - specifically, 10 Robert Juliat Aledin 634SX-CW, three Aledin 631SX-CW and two Aledin 633SX-CW LED profile spots. ‘We selected Robert Juliat because it offered the only fixtures that met our price point, had all the features

we wanted – including moving shutters – and delivered the brightness we needed,’ admitted project manager, Stephen Roberts. The Aledin LED profile spots were the first of their type to achieve significant output and framing/projection ability from an extremely lowpowered LED source, making them the ideal choices for environments with limited power supplies. Having met the power and pricing restrictions of Silverdale, the Aledins are now making their mark in terms of performance. ‘The client is very happy,’ Roberts reported. ‘The lights are working great. The church has had to do no maintenance on them, and although they move them around a lot, they always perform just fine.’ STAINED GLASS

Another church that’s recently had a lighting upgrade is St Peter’s in Hall Green, Birmingham. AC Special Projects (ACSP) was approached by Reverend Martin Stephenson of St Peter’s, to design and specify lighting for the attractive and unusual octagonal-shaped church. Positioned on each side of the nave are six ‘carpet’ windows with spectacular stained glass depicting ancient prayer mats that used to be hung in draughty churches. They were designed by Alsace-based artist, Tristan Ruhlmann, and had been lit using a system of ageing spotlights that was proving difficult to maintain. After visiting the church, ACSP’s project manager, Lance Bromhead devised a custom solution to fulfil the specific needs of the maintenance team while staying within the ecclesiastical budget. Anytronics was commissioned to make bespoke versions of its Anycolour 4-way dimmable fluorescent batten, complete with ‘warm white’ and ‘candlelight yellow’ deep-dyed polycarbonate over-sleeves. The fittings were located at the base of each window, so the light grazes upwards. The relief of the window surround is highlighted, creating a frame effect for the stunning artwork and enhancing the ambience of the space. Bromhead explained the choice: ‘The design utilised high efficiency recyclable fluorescent light sources (energy group A) with digitally controlled high frequency ballasts for a long lifetime, providing a perfect, flexible and cost effective solution.’ The fittings are driven via an Anytronics interface box controlled by an Anyscene 7, pre-programmed for different times of the day, services and other activities. ACSP also designed a system, which allows the magnificent east window behind the altar to be appreciated after dark. Five Hunza IP66-rated water resistant 35W metal halide fittings were attached to brackets mounted on the exterior wall above the windows. The fittings, which were chosen for their brightness, power efficiency, practicality, long life and low maintenance, are also controlled through the Anyscene 7. St Peter’s is very pleased with the results. David Scard, from the church’s maintenance team, explained: ‘ The advice we received from Lance and his colleagues, the demonstrations and careful explanations of alternatives, what they offered and

how efficient they would be was very impressive. The installation went very smoothly and the reception given to our new system by our congregations reflects a most successful operation.’ Interestingly, without an LED in sight, the new installation has more than halved the power consumption of the previous lighting scheme too.

Carlsberg UK has set a long-term commitment to reducing carbon emissions with the ambition of achieving a 40 per cent reduction in carbon emissions from energy use by the end of 2020. According to a spokesman for the company: ‘This will be achieved through working in partnership with key suppliers to better understand their product carbon emissions and actively work towards low carbon practices, together with increasing process and depot efficiency, intelligent fleet management and employee engagement campaigns. A key part of the programme is identifying significant immediate and long lasting energy reduction initiatives, such as the depot lighting refurbishment.’ Carlsberg brought in consultant, EHS Projects to source a cost-effective alternative to its current lighting arrangements inside six of its distribution centres across the country. EHS recommended products from Lutterworth Ecolighting’s Ecolite range to meet the need for improved efficiency, enhanced working conditions and to assist Carlsberg in its ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. Lutterworth replaced the traditional sodium and metal halide lighting units with 1044 Ecolite units. By working closely with local warehouse managers, the installation was carefully coordinated to ensure minimal disruption to the dayto-day operation of the sites. The six sites were completed over a period of six months, with installations taking between two to five weeks per site depending on the size. Each Ecolite utilises T5 photocell and passive infrared (PIR) tracking technology, ensuring the lights only operate when they’re actually needed. In addition to the substantial energy savings that the technology facilitates, the warehouses are also benefitting from superior light quality to aid productivity and to reduce potential H&S issues. The lighting will be maintained by Carlsberg’s in-house facilities team, although it is anticipated that the lamps should last for at least five years. Steve Powers, director at EHS Projects commented: ‘We have worked with Lutterworth Ecolighting for several years now and we are delighted to be at the point in this project where their lighting solution is installed and contributing to Carlsberg’s carbon reduction commitment. The installation of Ecolite technology into the national network of distribution centres will help Carlsberg with this commitment, but will also improve the working environment for the employees and generate significant cost savings for the business.’

PLEASURE BEACH GETS GREEN LIGHT Scolmore International has supplied energyefficient LED bulkheads from its Fumagalli collection as part of the refurbishment programme for Blackpool Pleasure Beach – one of the UK’s most visited amusement parks.

A total of 90 Fumagalli Lucia and Maddi Bulkheads have so far been installed, replacing the existing corroded fittings with a modern alternative that should provide a long-lasting, energy-saving and lowmaintenance lighting solution. Hundreds more of the bulkheads are set to be installed as the refurbishment programme rolls out. Overseeing the specification and installation was Owen Gillet, the onsite electrical maintenance supervisor. He commented: ‘As part of an on-going refurbishment programme, we aim to replace all the existing lighting, and a priority for us was to source products that are not just energy-efficient but given our exposure to extreme weather conditions, ones that are weather-proof too. ‘Fumagalli bulkheads provided the ideal solution. They are designed to last and have a lifetime guarantee against corrosion, which makes them perfect for a project like this one. With no maintenance to be carried out and the energy-saving properties of the lamps used - it all adds up to a very cost-efficient solution.’ The LED bulkheads consume just 11 watts power and have an IP66 weatherproof rating. Described as a ‘fix and forget’ answer to a host of outdoor and indoor lighting requirements, Fumagalli offers a solution for outside installations, including seafront promenades, public parks, shopping arcades and children’s play areas. The design incorporates a resin formulation that allows a lifetime guarantee against corrosion. The resin is self-coloured and UV stabilised, which means the fittings are virtually maintenance-free and will not discolour or fade, even in the brightest sunlight.

Prolyte Group has created a new website for its Litestructures brand, as part of an initiative to increase awareness of the creative project work undertaken by it. Since the merger, the brand has evolved into a special projects division. Litestructures’ experience of designing and manufacturing creative structures across a variety of sectors, from live events and brand realisation through to art and architecture, has inspired Prolyte to create an online portal to showcase a selection of bespoke projects. The website is focused on providing ways for new and existing clients to engage with the Litestructures brand and learn about the innovative solutions it offers. There is a facility to view and download case studies, and the opportunity to interact with the team. The site can be viewed at www.litestructures.com Miles Marsden, Prolyte’s UK sales director of special projects believes: ‘This is a time of renewed focus for Litestructures as the vehicle for our special projects work. The new website provides a dynamic platform for us to demonstrate our ability to transform ideas into reality, with striking results.’

NATIONAL TREASURE The unusual idea of light showing through a building was at the heart of a project for the headquarters of the Bank of Georgia in Tbilisi. The redesign of the listed building by architect, AG&P, which was put under a preservation order back in 2007, features illuminated translucent concrete as an integral part the refurbishment The ambitious team of architects specified light transmitting concrete with thousands of embedded optical fibers, which channel the light through translucent concrete walls and counter cladding. Walls, corridors, reception area, offices and consultation desks literally glow from within. The walk-in cube in the tellers‘ office at the ground floor lobby is extraordinary impressive, lined with white Lucem Line panels. The light transmitting concrete panels use highly efficient LED panels.

Lighting the great outdoors can be fraught with difficulty - and potential danger

Whether

lighting at ground level, or high above, there are two main considerations that must be taken into account by specifiers long before anything else, such as aesthetics or energy efficiency: is the fitting going to be safe, and will it stand up to the rigours of the elements? Lighting walkways and paths is, of course vital to the safety of pedestrians. On city streets, it tends to be taken care of by overhead street lighting, but what about in parks and other areas where traffic doesn’t create the same lighting requirement, such as a hotel’s grounds or a shopping centre exterior? A recent refurbishment programme at the five-star Plas Coch holiday park in North Wales showed up the need for more efficient, and energy conscious lighting. lodge park. An exclusive retreat, at its heart is a beautifully restored Elizabethan manor, home to bars, a gourmet restaurant and country club. The last word in luxury is a state-of-the-art spa, with pools and treatment rooms, including a salt chamber and ice room. The members-only Marine Club provides thrill seekers with the perfect playground to explore the safe Anglesey waters with top of the range power boats, RIB, sail, and access to canoe, windsurfing and much more. Scolmore International supplied 90 Fumagalli Sauro bollards to replace the existing ageing steel fittings with a modern alternative that provides a long-lasting, energy-saving solution. An antique green finish was specified for the main driveway, while a black finish was chosen for the rear car park and footpaths leading to the main house and leisure facilities. All were fitted with low energy lamps. The fittings had to be resistant to the salt air of the beautiful Anglesey region, so getting the choice right was vital to the future look and functionality of the project. Overseeing the specification and installation was contractor Jason Jones of CJ Electrics. He commented: ‘What’s great about the Fumagalli range is that it provides the ultimate ‘fix and forget’ solution to outdoor lighting projects. The bollards we used are designed to last and have a lifetime guarantee against corrosion, which makes them perfect for a project like this one. With no maintenance to be carried out and the energy-saving properties of the lamps used - it all adds up to a very cost-efficient solution.’ Scolmore has also supplied lighting for Blackpool’s famous Pleasure Beach – the world-famous amusement park on the UK’s north west coast. So far, 90 energyefficient LED Fumagalli Lucia and Maddi bulkheads have replaced existing corroded fittings. Hundreds more are set to be installed as the theme park’s refurbishment programme rolls out. Owen Gillet, the on-site electrical maintenance supervisor commented on the project: ‘As part of an on-going refurbishment programme, we aim to replace

all the existing lighting, and a priority for us was to source products that are not just energy-efficient but given our exposure to extreme weather conditions ones that are weather proof too.’ Fumagalli offers a solution for outdoor installations, including promenades, public parks, shopping arcades and children’s play areas. From contemporary to classic designs, the fittings all have one thing in common - a resin formulation that offers a lifetime guarantee against corrosion. The resin is self-coloured and UV stabilised, which means the fittings are virtually maintenance-free and shouldn’t discolour or fade, even in the bright sunlight of Blackpool. Back in Wales, the development of SA1 waterfront in Swansea aims to reconnect the Prince of Wales Dock to the rest of the city. The Ice House Square forms a key public space within the development, as well as a landing point for the Wilkinson Eyre-designed bridge. The square is based on a formal rectangular grid, which is accentuated with 16 trees and a lighting installation by artist, Peter Fink. The lighting creates an informal overlay over the paving grid, using embedded LED programmable strip lighting. The intention is to create ‘metaphorical rooms of light’ for people using the square, as well as accentuating their direction of movement. When it’s not been triggered by passers-by, the lighting pulses gently with random flows of colour. Commissioned by Swansea City Council and the Welsh Assembly, the lighting installation, which was a collaboration between Fink and Urban Projects, can be programmed to provide displays on special calendar dates, such as Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve or St David’s Day. Of course, when it comes to outdoor lighting, the aim to use as little energy as possible is now high on specifiers’ wish lists. GB-Sol has recently completed a project in collaboration with the Danish firm, Scotia to design an unusually-shaped solar PV panel to fit a lamp post unit Scotia was developing. The main challenge was to create a panel that would fit on top of the lamp column, without deterring from the design, but that would produce enough energy to power the lamp through the hours of darkness. The resulting SunMast designs have been installed in a car park in Randers, outside Aarhus, and at the harbour of Ebeltoft, in Denmark.

When designing a new home, the primary focus is inevitably on the layout and features of the house itself, but from a visual standpoint it’s the outdoor features that define the property and its character long before you step through the front door. With the right choices in outdoor and garden lighting, Lighting Direct’s Jon Sharman suggests a series of ways architects can showcase that character on terms that suit, drawing attention to the property’s aesthetic highlights to maximise their visual impact. or the most part, we think of outdoor lights in purely functional terms – they provide a measure of security, but more importantly they illuminate outdoor spaces. That may sound like a statement of the obvious, but it’s an important one all the same. Over the summer months many of us will be looking to enjoy the warm evenings out in the garden – whether entertaining friends or just soaking up the evening air – and good outdoor lighting can help set just the right mood. For architects, however, exterior lighting can serve another purpose: it can focus attention on visually appealing elements of the house itself – or draw attention away from its less pleasing aspects. In a sense, it’s like being able to take a highlighter to the architectural plans and colour in all the best bits. And it doesn’t have to be a vanity exercise, either: well-placed exterior lighting can deliver on both a functional and aesthetic level, giving you the best of both worlds without adding appreciably to your total cost. Let’s look at a few ways exterior lighting can be used as an outdoor design feature, and how different types of lighting can help create the visual impact you’re looking for.

Contacts www.lighting-direct.co.uk/ outdoor-lighting/

56

GARDEN LIGHTS The most efficient way of lighting any space is of course from above, but this simply isn’t possible in most garden settings, and even when it is, the result is lighting that is often harsh, uneven and invariably unattractive. Ground-based fittings make for a far more pleasing effect, and can create a feature in the garden all by themselves, provide subtle illumination that shows off outdoor spaces to best effect without overpowering them. Wooden, low voltage LED posts, for instance, can help define borders or pathways in both domestic and office/retail settings. And with plug-andplay lighting, you can easily scale your lighting system to suit the size of the space needing illumination, even mixing and matching different fixtures on a single system. LED FLOODLIGHTS Floodlights are typically associated with security, and it’s not hard to see why: their sheer brightness serves as a strong deterrent for any wouldbe criminal. But floodlights can also be deployed for more aesthetic purposes, using that brightness to deliver maximum visual impact and draw attention to specific architectural design features. Options range from compact 10W floodlights suited to the limited needs of a compact home, right up to ultra-bright 500W units typically used to illuminate office premises.

The emergence of affordable energy saving and solarpowered technology has made floodlights a popular choice in even modest domestic settings these days, and with the ability to couple them with motion sensors or even a video camera, the security benefits speak for themselves. DOORWAYS The front door is an allimportant feature in any home, and invariably one of the design elements people pay closest attention to when conceptualising their dream home. It’s a feature that has to be well lit too, both from a security and accessibility standpoint, and from an emotional one in that a well-lit doorway makes visitors feel more welcome than a dark, gloomy space. The standard approach to entrance lighting is to illuminate the area using a single overhead or wallmounted lantern. This can sometimes result in harsh, uneven lighting and glare, but besides that serves little other than a functional purpose and doesn’t add anything visually to what is arguably the single most important space on the entire property. One way of making sure you avoid glare is to opt for a wall-mounted down light, or better still an aesthetically pleasing up and down light. Ensuring that the light never shines directly into visitor’s eyes not only cuts out the problem of glare, but also allows you to draw attention to the design of

the fitting itself. Supplement this with some subtle and well-placed ground lights and you’ll have an entrance area that delivers maximum visual impact. PATHS, PATIOS AND DECKING In most gardens, the level of ambient light simply isn’t high enough to adequately illuminate paved areas, driveways, decking and garden pathways. As the name suggests, demarcation lights highlight where one area of outdoor space ends and another begins, such as marking the edge of a curved driveway to make parking easier, or illuminating the edge of flower beds to avoid people stepping in them. Factoring in demarcation lights right from the start of the design process means they can be incorporated into the home’s design language itself, often with stunning results. In fact, from stylish decking LEDs to recessed walkover lights that can handle loads of up to 900kg, demarcation lights can be one of the most stylish and attractive visual features of any home. The trick is to avoid lights that are too bright for the ambient light conditions, as this can lead to unwanted glare that could prove dangerous if it compromises your ability to see where you’re going. A far better approach is to opt for several softer, less intensive lights that will provide an aesthetically pleasing visual effect without blinding you when you’re standing next to them.

CONCLUSION

The sheer variety of outdoor lighting options out there these days has given designers and architects scope for creative expression like never before. Combine that with ever-improving energy efficiency and affordability, and even modest building designs can now incorporate the kind of stylish exterior lighting solutions that would have been a practical impossibility just a few years ago.

escribed as chic, sophisticated and as setting a new benchmark for casino resorts, Revel garnered much praise ahead of its May 2012 opening. The US$2.4bn project - Atlantic City’s most expensive casino to date and the largest construction project on the US east coast - is hoped will revive the gaming and tourism industry in this historic ocean-front city. Montreal-based Lightemotion was involved in the project since its conception five years ago. Brought in by the design firm, Scéno Plus, the company has been an instrumental contributor in creating the exciting and breathtaking environment in which guests will be immersed during their stay at Revel. Initially, Lightemotion’s mandate was to design the lighting for the cabaret and the Ovation Hall, a 5000-plus seat transformable theatre in the resort. However, after unveiling its value added concepts to Scéno Plus, the interior team proposed that Lightemotion illuminate the 130,000sq ft casino as well as the lounge. Finally, Lightemotion was asked to create what founder, Francois Roupinian, describes as: ‘Evolving environments created by light,’ throughout the diverse public spaces in the resort, such as the casino space itself, the Ocean and City Ways, porte cochere, pool play zone, main entrance, the ellipse with its grand staircase and the dining enclave. Lightemotion principal, Roupinian commented: ‘Our mandate was clear; create an atmosphere that is immersive and dynamic: something exciting, with wow-factor.’ In the current economic climate it was necessary for the designers to maximise efficiencies and reduce costs. Lightemotion worked to integrate exciting lighting features, all of which have long operational lives and low maintenance, into an interior design that has no precedent in the casino world. More than 3,600 LED fixtures, 3,100 downlights, 1,000 projectors and 1,300 decorative custom fittings have been designed into the interior. ‘All of the lighting elements are incorporated into the architecture in such a way that items are lit from within,’ explains Roupinian. ‘The plush red carpet of the main casino floor glows with a soft projected amber pattern; the gaming tables are draped in a soft yet precise light, allowing the creation of the perfect comfortable environment for the players;

walls and partitions are accentuated with light or meld into the background depending on the mood but all the while the source of the lighting is a mystery.’ The immersive environment has a constantly changing atmosphere that evolves from morning to night, all via the magic of light. Throughout the casino and its connected spaces, the illumination levels are warmer during the day, assisted by daylight from the expansive views of the ocean. As the day progresses, the lighting softens and changes, moving through numerous programmable settings such as ‘cocktail hour’, and ‘lounge’. Within this environment are numerous gems, extravagant elements that set Revel apart: countless illuminated lighting spheres shrouded within a maze of sheer fabric create a giant full scale chandelier in the dining enclave; cushioned walls, studded with hundreds of LEDs; a shimmering golden mobile by Pascale Girardin lit from above to create a sparkling faux chandelier in the main entrance and staircase. Lightemotion has enlivened every space it was given to design with its creative and innovative use of light. ‘We bring an extra dynamism to the architecture and interior design,’ explained Roupinian. ‘Working with talented designers has allowed us to really show our skills. We have been able to create magic; atmospheres and moods throughout a multitude of spaces, each of which was a different design adventure.’ The Revel Resort project, which had a grand opening celebration on 25 May, is one of the largest projects that Lightemotion has worked on to date.Roupinian and his creative team have delivered a new innovative lighting design benchmark, creating immersive environments that bring drama and excitement to casino resort design. What’s more, they did it on schedule and within budget using energy efficient equipment that should stand the test of time. ‘We have brought our flair for theatre into the architectural dimension and helped create a project with a true wow-factor,’ explained Roupinian.

THE JUBILEE – IN LIGHTS The lighting and projection for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert in June was both a stunning show and an incredible feat of man over cable. The very talented Durham Marenghi was tasked by Robbie Williams’ production company with creating a dynamic concert for television broadcast for the BBC, using Buckingham Palace as the backdrop, and including the live audience in The Mall. Marenghi is no stranger to Royal events; he was lighting designer for the Golden Jubilee celebrations a decade ago. He explained: ‘I specified Clay Paky lights in the main. I needed compact bright sources with excellent optics and reliability, as we had a very minimalist roof design to allow a clear view of the Palace for our TV and live audiences.’ 60 Sharpys were rigged around the Victoria Memorial, 32 QWO and Alpha Wash 700 on the stage trusses, plus one Sharpy with a very special role – to illuminate the diamond, which in turn triggered the lighting of the beacon. On stage, 10 QWO were installed along with six Union Jack-dressed Sharpys donated by Clay Paky for the event. Around the stage, 60 Alpha Beam 1500 were used for aerial effects. Marenghi explained: ‘60 being the key number here for a Diamond Jubilee, (I had 50 searchlights on the roof of the Palace for the Golden Jubilee). ‘On the Palace façade, I used 32 Alpha Wash 1500, and for Madness

playing on the roof, four QWO 800. The Alpha Spot QWO 800s were chosen due to their compact size, extremely high output and fantastic optics that provided pin sharp gobos on performers a few feet away, and also in the air and on the audience hundreds of feet away. Remarkable!’ Nobody watching the concert could miss the projection on the façade of the palace, created by XL Events. Project manager, Steve Greetham really created the ‘oohs and aahs’ for viewers both on the ground and those watching coverage on TV, with fantastic images of candles, flowers – and the unfortgettable ‘terraced house’ for the Madness set. Greetham commented: ‘We were approached by Durham Merenghi, who wanted to achieve projected images at a measurement of 200 Lux, so as to integrate into his lighting palette and be readable on the TV broadcast. Andy Joyes and I designed a 36-projector rig using Barco HD FLM 20’s, in six towers spread across the Palace forecourt, each with two pods of three projectors per tower. These were monitored and manipulated by Joyes over a network, using Barco Projector Toolset, and driven by UVA, using four of their D3 servers into our Lightware matrices and ImagePros. ‘The result of this system and Sam Pattinson’s visuals was to create an incredible backdrop to the whole stage, which delivered the required luminosity, and an end result which we are very proud of.’

news FLY THE FLAG

After another incredibly success, the organisers of Vivid Sydney are seeking expressions of interest from international lighting designers, engineering and design individuals, groups and teams for all of the festival’s lighting sculptures, installations and projections currently being planned for the 2013 event. There are just two months in which to register expressions of interest, starting on 1 September 2012, and with the NSW Government announcing plans to grow the event, it’s an opportunity not to be missed. Details for interested parties will be available on the Vivid Sydney website - www.vividsydney.com

Buying in Universal Event Productions (UEP) has invested in the latest Robe LED moving lights to boost its inventory of LED lightsources. This is following busy trading for the last two years and a healthy order book for the upcoming months. It’s also part of an on-going commitment to providing greener and more eco-friendly lighting rigs to its client base. UEP’s Steve Butcher explained: ‘Many events are becoming a lot more carbon-conscious, and, apart from that, from a rental perspective there are all the advantages - like greater flexibility for applications and the lower maintenance that comes with good quality LED sources’.

OF STAGE AND SCREEN

Lighting stage and screen events isn’t for the faint-hearted. When the curtain goes up or the ‘Live’ recording lights go on, the lighting has to perform

O

pening night nerves aren’t just reserved for actors. Almost everyone involved in live stage or screen productions must feel a jitter or two: not least the lighting designer whose input will create the drama and atmosphere, whether that’s for a 30-minute live TV debate, an outdoor spectacular, or a three-hour production on a West End stage. More often than not, if he’s done his job right, the audience won’t even be aware of the specifics of the lighting, they’ll just know it was a powerful debate, or a really atmospheric drama they’ve witnessed. VARIETY ON STAGE

Jands Vista Friedrichsbau Variete by Alexandra Klein

The Friedrichsbau Varieté in Stuttgart, one of the most popular and influential variety show stages in Germany, is benefitting from the installation of a Jands Vista T2 console at the heart of its lighting control. With a vibrant history dating back to the end of the 19th century, the theatre was re-opened in 1994 on the site of the original venue, which had been destroyed in World War II. Friedrichsbau Varieté stages four wellknown productions each year, featuring internationally acclaimed artists as well as new talent. Awash with colour and dynamics; an eclectic mix of circus and performance skills merge contemporary and classic aesthetics, and all accompanied by the Friedrichsbau Varieté Orchestra. Each

of the shows has a long and a short version, and each run is between two and three months. The Vista T2 was specified by Friedrichsbau Varieté’s technical director and lighting designer, Torsten Schulz. Amongst its features, he’s extremely fond of Vista’s visual interface, as he explained: ‘No number crunching on a keypad is very appealing to me’. The console controls up to 156 dimmer channels, and a number of automated lights including: Coemar Infinity spot and washes, Chroma-Q Color Block DB4, Chroma-Q Color Block 2, and GLP Startube 4 fluorescents, together with haze and fog machines. Another feature that Schulz really appreciates is the Timeline facilities, something he now considers essential for any theatre performance. He explained that he often applies complex and unusual time sequences to the cues, a process that is made very much more simple now.

‘Great teamwork and collaboration between some of the best professionals in the industry produced fantastic results’

PREPARING FOR TOMORROW

One of the first Sensor3, ETC’s new power control product, to be commissioned in the UK was for London’s National Theatre. Lighting resources manager, Michael Atkinson explained why the venue was keen to make the change to the new equipment: ‘We expect to see an increasing number of LED and automated fixtures in the rigs across the theatre in the next few years, and so it makes sense to prepare the venue for the future. This move from solid state relays to proper air gap relays will work much better with switch mode power supplies found on today’s fixtures.’ The equipment, supplied by White Light, has already come into use, with Stephen Beresford’s The Last of the Haussmans, which opened on 12 June. ETC’s marketing manager, Erik Larsen added: ‘The two 48-module Sensor3 power control racks, feed lighting bars already populated with a range of luminaires: they include a mix of LED, tungsten and intelligent fixtures.

Jands Vista Friedrichsbau Variete by Alexandra Klein

‘This is ETC’s vision of the future: rather than one type of lighting being dominant, each works well, both individually and in combination with others; and for circumstances like this, ThruPower modules mean that they can all be powered without any challenges.’ Regional manager Mark White added: ‘How appropriate that the National Theatre has chosen our state-of-the-art power control system. The National has always been at the forefront in having cutting edge equipment, so we are proud to see them installing equipment fit for the next generation of energy efficient lighting sources.’ TALENT ON TV

Serbian TV’s version of I’ve Got Talent! – Ja imam talenat! sparkles and crackles with energy, thanks to the skill of lighting director Viktor Trifu. The show’s successful format, with its trademark huge stage and impressive lighting rig, has been rolled out globally, but each nation has taken charge of it’s own specifying. Trifu made the decision to light the local version of the show with an ETC Ion control desk. He explained the rationale behind his choice: ‘I decided to purchase an Ion control desk because of its compact footprint, allowing me to use it in any environment; and because it can be expanded with up to six universal fader wings. I purchased one fader wing for now, and am hoping to purchase another soon.

Katara Hospitality event at Ritz Carlton

‘Once I’d unpacked and started using the desk, I realised how easy it is to operate. The manual has plenty of detail, and I was able to get started very quickly. Ion is a very functional control desk – easy to learn and smooth to work on.’ The desk was supplied by Studio Berar Projekt. Marketing manager, Lazar Jošanov commented: ‘Kiki [Trifu] purchased the desk two months ago, and this was the first time that he used it officially. He is a great fan of ETC equipment, especially lighting desks; and he also works as a professor of lighting design at the Academy of Arts here in Novi Sad.’ Ion provides the ease, power and operational style of the company’s Eos desk in a smaller package; its small footprint – it’s just 19-inches wide – is the perfect solution for space-challenged environments and small venues, and for when a portable desk is needed. Providing fully integrated control of conventional and moving lights, the desk has a powerful effects package as well as marking and timing functions. On the opposite side of Belgrade, another national TV station, Prva has built a new studio, complete with dimming supplied by ETC via Studio Berar Projekt. Aleksandar Kruščić, Studio Berar engineer commented: ‘The network wanted to treat itself for its growing viewer market share. ‘We installed six ETC SmartPack 12-channel dimmer modules in two racks, providing 72 ways of dimming – and there is room left in the racks should the network’s technicians wish to add more capacity. At the studio’s request, we supplied the packs with CEE 16A output connectors.’ Broadcasting nationally, with reality shows like Survivor Srbija (Survivor Serbia), as well as daily news and lifestyle programmes, Prva is one of the most watched commercial stations in the country. PROJECTED ACROSS TIME

Moving further afield, Doha-based event design and production company Kenkaato produced a spectacular of epic proportions for Katara Hospitality (formerly Qatar National Hotels Company), which involved fully co-ordinated large format projections onto four of the group’s stunning buildings in central Doha – the Ritz Carlton in West Bay, the Doha Marriot, the Sheraton Hotel with its eye-catching

70

Corniche site and its own headquarters on C-Ring. The event was delivered utilising all the power and drama of monumental projection combined with feature lighting. Kenkaato’s Sarah Whitmarsh and Darryl Payne brought in Dutch projection specialist, Hulskamp Audiovisual to help realise the project and put together the technical specification needed to create the spectacle. Pani BP6 high power slide projectors were chosen as the most versatile for the job. They were fitted with a selection of different lenses to match their positioning and throw distances. Three of the ‘canvasses’ were glass-fronted buildings, so they were dressed in a perforated wrapping - a challenging six-day job involving teams of professional abseilsers, who had to work hanging from the top of buildings up to 115m high. At the pyramid-shaped Sheraton, the images measured 132m wide at the base, and were 62m high. This was achieved using three Pani BP6’s positioned on an architectural walkway across a lagoon 50m distant. The Marriot was projected onto on two sides utilising four BP6 machines positioned in the car park and on the beach. Control for the installations was local to each site, but to unify them, the crowns and top pieces of each building were illuminated in the same bright blue, using high-powered architectural lighting fixtures, supplied by Creative Communications Group. To complete the visual picture, the grounds at each site were feature lit with individual lighting schemes designed by Michel Khairallah from CCG. These all added atmosphere and enhanced the aesthetics to tie in with the content being highlighted on the buildings. A variety of lighting fixtures were used, including Griven Kolorado’s, Kaliedo’s and Kolorstream 2500s and Clay Paky Alpha Spot 1200 and 1500 moving lights. Whitmarsh commented on the results: ‘We were thrilled to be invited to be part of Katara’s new era. Working with people we trust, we knew we could create something awesome. As ever, there are always challenges here, which were magnified by the very short three-week lead-time and import delays. Nevertheless, great teamwork and collaborations between some of the best professionals in the industry produced fantastic results’.

BMW’s stand at the Geneva Motor Show is always a draw for the crowds, but this year’s event was a truly illuminating experience for them BMW

fans at Geneva were in for an extra treat when lighting designer, Peter Heilig of SfS Proj ect Aschaffenburg used more than 300 Robe ROBIN 600 LEDWash and PureWhite moving lights to light a special pavilion area showcasing the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe on the BMW stand at the 2012 International Geneva Motor show. The concept for the high profile event, staged at the Palexpo Centre in Geneva, was originated by Mutabor Design of Hamburg. In collaboration with architect, Puchner & Schum, together with Frankfurt-based engineers Structure, a steel superstructure was

The colour mixing is perfect and the zoom range (15 – 60 degrees) exceptional designed, then clad with fibreglass to create two curved three-dimensional latticed set piece walls surrounding two Gran Coupe model BMWs, one on a revolve. There was a circular ceiling above the area with three rings of trussing for lighting positions, and at the back of the presentation space was a circular high resolution LED video screen. For the duration of the show, the car’s promotional video was looped and shown on the screen, accompanied by a stylish and harmonious lightshow that integrated the cars into the set, so choosing the right luminaire was absolutely crucial to Heilig’s lighting design. Previous to this event, he hadn’t used Robe products, and before making his decision, he conducted several shootouts. He was looking for a luminaire with a good quality of light, a flat and even beam field, smooth colour mixing and a good zoom range. After the first couple of shootouts it quickly became apparent that the only LED wash fixture meeting all his criteria was the Robe ROBIN 600 LEDWash and the ROBIN 600 PureWhite SW (the smart-white version of the luminaire). ‘It is the ideal tool’ he explained. ‘The colour mixing is perfect and the zoom range (15 – 60 degrees) exceptional’. Robe pulled all the stops out to deliver the LEDWashes in a short lead-time, and made a special order for the 42 SmartWhites as Cree normally produces this LED multi-chip only in the US. Ninety-four of the 311 units used for the installation were supplied in white housings. A hundred and twenty LEDWash 600s were ensconced in the narrow corridors behind the latticed set walls either side of the Gran Coupe arena – both on the floor and in the air, and they very effectively lit a wall behind, as well as the set itself. The rest of the fixtures were rigged on the three circular trusses in the ceiling. Heilig had to create three different lightshows for the overall event – one for the BMW Group Conference, one for the DTM (racing series) press conference, plus one for the on-going show presentation. To meet the schedule, detailed 3D visualised pre-programming was undertaken off-site and then fine-tuned when at Palexpo by programmer/ operator, Jan Kirchhoff, using a grandMA2 full size console. Ingo Dombrowski, Robe’s key account manager for Europe commented: ‘Peter Heilig clearly designed the absolute highlight for showcasing a new product at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. There was no other presentation as impressive as this in the entire show. Respect!’

LIGHTING THE PASSION FOR FASHION Total Lighting focuses on how Microlights has created successful lighting environments for womenswear retailer, Mint Velvet

n just two years, Mint Velvet has established its reputation for relaxed but glamorous womenswear. Multiple outlets nationwide in high end department stores are testament to consumer demand but when it comes to opening successful outlets on the high street, then a distinctive corporate footprint is the ‘must-have’ for every season. Microlights were selected by Kinnersley Kent Design, London’s foremost design consultancy of retail interiors to co-design the lighting scheme to each of the five stores which are based in the south-east. The first store launched in Harpenden and from day one, the design brief was to create a sophisticated atmosphere. Ambient lighting was easily ruled out and spotlights were specified as the sole form of lighting,

each to be carefully focussed on merchandise, in order to create the required dramatic effect. Mint Velvet displays merchandise very close to the glazing and display lighting presented a challenge. At Newbury Park Way there was no room to angle the light delivered from the ceiling onto the merchandise. Microlights devised a solution by selecting small LED Moon fittings, mounted on track from the sides of the window to deliver light from different heights across the window. Five stores later, 20w ceramic metal halide lamps in a directional housing remain the lighting product of choice and it’s only the can that has varied. Where low ceilings exist, recessed gimbals and track mounted spotlights are installed. The use of simple effective window props with no window back means that lighting must be intense. The window is the excitement that converts a passer-by into a customer. The display needs to be strong and immediate as it has only about five seconds to get its message across. Strong lighting highlights the display out from its surroundings, thus ensuring recognition which should trigger the impulse to stop and visit today or come back another day. By choosing the lighting elements that work best for their merchandise and their target customer, Mint Velvet have ensured an increase in sales in this important area of the store. To Mint Velvet’s fitting rooms a minimum number of LED Versa simple but elegant luminaires offer intense light output and are effective in ceilings up to 3m high. This innovative technology also means that heat is dissipated back into the ceiling to create a comfortable changing room environment. Versa reduces energy costs, is available in 33W and 37 TCW W options, has an LED lamp life in excess of 50k hours, and comes with a 5-year warranty. As the Mint Velvet estate grows, sustainability is also carefully considered when selecting luminaires and lamps. For example, a saving of 43% on energy has been achieved simply by fitting metal halide 20W lamps in preference to 35W halogens technology. For a similar scheme cost, fewer ceramic metal halide luminaires can be used to create a more efficient and more exciting effect. There is also a resulting reduction in air conditioning load, meaning the store climate can be controlled to comfortable levels at a much lower running cost. This is achieved through Microlights reflectors being of a high material grade and designed specifically for retail, thus ensuring more of the lamps output is used more efficiently. Founded in 1984, Microlights specialises in providing ‘Personalised Retail Lighting Solutions’ through UK design and manufacture of innovative luminaires whilst aiming to provide exceptional sales consultancy and after sales service. Ed Plumb, designer at Kinnersley Kent Design said: ‘Retailers often have only six weeks in which to have a new store up and running. Microlights responds well to the demands presented by tight lead times and the challenge is backed up by a good range of quality products and service levels.’ The vital component in any store that features flexible accent lighting like Mint Velvet does is the focussing of the luminaires. By offering this service after the store has been merchandised and just before opening, Microlights help ensure the 2D design dream becomes an exciting 3D reality.

MAIN IMAGE: Feature

lighting such as this contemporary chandelier creates special interest to feature areas of the store while Micromoon creates overall store ambience and lighting effectiveness.

LEFT BOTTOM:

In this London outlet, lighting draws the customer to the back of the store where shoes are accessories are elegantly displayed. The human eye tends to follow light, so the use of accent and spot lighting are valuable tools in drawing the customer’s attention. Poor light levels at the rear of the store can be intimidating and can reduce the customer’s exploration of the store. Shelving and displays can be lit in a number of ways by a number of products – it may be ceiling mounted or closer to the display area eg undershelf, with a mix of colour temperatures depending on merchandise type, store brand position, or the interior components. LEFT: Mint Velvet’s flagship store in Muswell Hill required the lighting scheme to deliver a more intense theatrical effect in a drive to recruit and retain customer footfall. A high ceiling to the store allowed the use of Micromoon, a theatrical size can spotlight which offers real performance and has the look of its stage counterpart. Micromoon not only looks dramatic in order to maximise the retail effect but offers efficiency as the number of lamps employed and the energy they require can be reduced. ABOVE: Changing rooms are arguably the place where the final decision to purchase is made. A good scheme will make the customer look good and therefore feel great. Colour temperature, colour rendition, the light/ shade contrast and the light level intensity all play a part in creating the correct atmosphere during the purchasing decision process.
