Fortimo LED SLM Gen 2 upgrade and expansions The central promise of the Philips Fortimo LED product range is constant innovation within a fixed format and includes a standardized optical interface and standardized lumen packages. As long as this defined format is used, luminaire manufacturers can easily implement the latest advances in LED efficacy, without having to change the driver, the dimensions of the LED module or the lumen output. It also means that Philips can provide constant innovation. The Philips Fortimo LED spotlight module (SLM) range generation 2 features upgrades for the entire product portfolio: • Quality of light improvement with increased CRI of up to 95 Ra • Ease of design-in improvement via the use of a new optical dome and a higher operating temperature • Performance upgrade of up to 30% lm/W for 3000 K • Product portfolio expansion with 2700 K Performance upgrades This 2nd generation stands for a greatly increased efficacy, and depending on the lumen output this increase can be more than 30%. In addition, the Standard Deviation for Color Matching (SDCM) has been reduced from four to just three initially, for even greater color consistency. Portfolio expansions The Philips Fortimo LED SLM gen 2 system expansions includes a CRI 90 delivering improved quality of light, an additional color temperature of 2700 K allowing the module to be applied in more retail application areas. And the greater lumen output option of 5000 lm will ensure that the gen 2 becomes a significant complementary product in line with CDM 70W performance.

New optical dome for smoother beam A special developed silicone dome is applied to the improved spotlight module which helps to improve the homogeneity of the beam. Covering the LEDs ensures that the light is more comprehensively mixed – creating a totally homogenous beam pattern without rings. The silicone is also extremely transparent, therefore less than 3% of light output is lost. The new silicone dome also enables the use of specular reﬂectors. 40% reduction in cooling costs The TC for Fortimo has been increased to 75 °C. This means that the luminaire manufacturer can use smaller heat sinks and therefore miniaturize his luminaire. More luminaire designs (those with up to 3000 lm outputs) can now use passive cooling strategies. The bottomline effect of this increased TC is that cooling solutions now cost up to 40% less. I’m not too sure whether I should even admit to this, but do you remember the January Lighting Show (that was) as THE event of the UK lighting calendar - somewhere to be sure you could see every manufacturer and designer, get the low-down on all of the latest products, and catch up with all the goings on from within the industry? I hesitate to use the G-word, but there was always a quiet corner table for coffee and illuminating gossip.

So what on earth has happened to the event? Is it just one of those ‘it’s run it’s course’ kind of things, the knock-on effect of other shows that people are trying out to see if the response is better, or just a sign of the times? The cost of exhibiting, when you start to factor in lost man (or woman) hours, travelling, setting up and dismantling time, insurance, and display requirements as well of course, as the immediate costs associated with stands, product launches etc., is without doubt prohibitive for many companies in today’s tough ﬁnancial climate. So perhaps it’s simply a case of exhibitors picking and choosing between the various events on offer, and in the case of the coming show, they’ve all picked and chosen elsewhere.

Moving on to a more festive - if equally played-down subject this year - what’s going on with the Christmas lights? The offerings from many town centres are, quite honestly, pathetic. Only last month I was bemoaning the early arrival of Christmas lights - perhaps somebody read my comments and passed the word around? Or have the illustrious leaders of town councils never heard of the LED? I really thought that the technological advances of the little marvel would mean we’d be awash with Austrian Alps meets Blackpool-style illuminations. Every wall, municipal building, bush shelter, tree and bush should be smothered in a twinkling mass of Christmas cheer by now, whereas the sad truth is that - at least in the areas I’ve driven through this month - they seem sadly bereft. Two town centres I’ve seen this week were still using traditional lamps strung in hideous 1980’s-style glory from end to end of the high street. Mind you, most of the LEDs are being sported by Audi A5s and Eastern European trucks, so perhaps there’s a shortage? In all seriousness, I am a big fan of the beleagured LED, although I admit that it has a way to go before it should be considered as a replacement for every lightsource known to man. I recently replaced the lamps in a bedroom, and now need two overheads and a multi-directional bedside lamp to ﬁnd any shoes in the morning. However, in celebration of it, we’ve included it in our last issue of 2011 (p41) - and if you’ve had enough of them for one year, take a look at using light as art (p25). It’s stunning. More than…

Harvard Engineering’s award-winning wireless street lighting monitoring and control system, LeafNut, has gone beyond managing just street lights by being used to successfully control Merthyr Tydﬁl’s Christmas lights too. The solution for the Christmas lights uses a MagNode – a miniature wireless radio control system, attached to groups of lights. This allows the system’s central server to communicate with each group of lights, ensuring they can be accurately synchronised at times of switch on and off. The control method signiﬁcantly reduces the number of man-hours required to install and maintain the festive illuminations, and provides local authorities with the ability to increase its reliability, allowing for greater maintenance accuracy, as lights and fuses do not need to be checked individually. Michael McDonnell, sales and marketing director at Harvard Engineering said: ‘The solution can not only help councils with different outdoor lighting requirements, but companies that manage outdoor lighting systems to save energy, reduce CO2 emissions as well as maintenance costs.’

A royal tribute

Roblon fibre optic fittings supplied by the Light Projects Group have been used to dramatically light two bronze, three-metre friezes on a famous London statue sculpted by Paul Day. Gracing either side of the Queen Mother Memorial on The Mall, Day decided that fibre optics would provide the ideal lighting solution. It was chosen due to its subtle and discreet fibre end points that won’t detract from the imagery within the friezes as they illuminate the panels from the top in a specially-designed pelmet. The correct lux levels were determined using Roblon’s calculator. For this scheme, a mix of 40mm diameter and 76mm diameter recessed eyeball fittings with flange and wide optics were used, along with 4.5mm glass PMMA fibre attached to two 150W metal halide projectors. This created a clear white light with high colour rendering, which pulls out the creative three-dimensional relief and accentuates the depth and details of the image from the back to the front. The two friezes depict very different scenes. One shows the King and Queen visiting Londoners bombed out of their homes during the Blitz; the other illustrates different interests of the Queen Mother’s life, such as meeting veterans, horse racing and Castle Mey.

Low carbon council A Nottinghamshire local authority, which won the 2011 Low Carbon Council of the Year award, has adopted energy-saving lighting from Chalmor for two of its largest town-centre car parks. Mansfield District Council is making financial savings of £22,569, which translates to 132.88 tonnes of CO2 per year, by using the lighting source with motion and photo controls. It has been installed in the Four Seasons shopping centre car park and the Walkden Street car park. The decision came following Mansfield’s climate change officer, Helen Bartle witnessing the lighting at last year’s

Energy Service and Technology Association exhibition in Manchester. The lighting and controls are operated by time controls, outside light levels and occupancy sensors or any permutation of the three. The company’s Refit T5 system, installed at both car parks, replaces older fluorescent fittings by the latest generation T5 fluorescent technology offering substantial cost savings and dramatically reducing energy consumption. This system in conjunction with the Autolux Universal lighting controller ensures a rapid return on investment as well as

reduced maintenance costs. Each car park uses one of Chalmor’s Autolux six channel controllers and two weatherproof light level sensors to maximise energy savings by making use of daylight and time sensors. Chalmor calculated a payback time of 1.4 years for the upgrade that cost £31,250 for the two parkingareas. Colin Childs, Chalmor’s national sector manager said: ‘By offering Mansﬁeld District Council savings, this project has at the same time delivered a safer environment offering increased light levels and both day and night time lighting control.’

Abacus links in Abacus has joined forces with MP Zac Goldsmith to launch a school’s sustainability competition in the London region. Schools were invited to take part in the competition, which asked pupils to submit their creative ideas of what a sustainable future could look like. To pledge its commitment to the issue of sustainability and environmental lighting, Abacus offered to provide the winning school with a free sustainable lighting scheme worth thousands of pounds. The competition entries were judged by Goldsmith and Andrew Morris-Richardson, group-managing director of Abacus Lighting. The winning drawing came from a pupil at Tiffin Girls’ School in Kingston. Abacus is set to create an exterior sustainable lighting scheme for the playground, car parks and the school building, all designed, manufactured and installed by Abacus to ensure the school reaps energy saving benefits from the very latest sustainable solutions. Goldsmith said: ‘When Abacus approached me about the competition, I knew our local schools would respond with real enthusiasm, and they didn’t disappoint.’ Morris-Richardson added: ‘Sustainable, environmentally friendly lighting is at the heart of out product offer and what better way to demonstrate this, than by offering a free scheme to this school that will not only protect the environment, but our children’s futures too.’

Ptarmigan Integration commended Ptarmigan, the Hong Kong-based lighting integrator, in association with San Francisco design house, Lightswitch Architectural, has been honoured at the IES Awards in Austin, Texas. The companies received a special citation in the Control Innovation category, sponsored by the Lighting Controls Association. The project that caught the judges’ attention is the Bubble Theatre at Macau’s City of Dreams Resort, a multi-media audio, visual and lighting experience. The show, entitled ‘Dragon’s Treasure’ required a huge and complex control system involving two media servers, EthernetDMX merging and over a hundred universes of data.

RIDI gets ahead Class Control Advanced, a new control solution from RIDI Lighting, designed to create mood and ambience in corporate environments, has been used at M-Lab – the world’s first management laboratory. Located at the London Business School, M-lab is a flexible space that can be adapted for a variety of teaching styles and practices. Built by architect Fraser Brown Mackenna, the room is designed for multi-use teaching and presentations, and can be hired for corporate events. Building services consultant, Michael Jones and Associates faced the challenge of providing a lighting scheme that could transform a basement room into a cutting edge management teaching space. RIDI luminaries were chosen for practical and creative reasons. Colin Maddox, project engineer said: ‘From a specification point of view it is a real benefit to be able to source all lighting system products from the same manufacturer. This worked really well for the M-Lab project, where we had to develop a creative solution incorporating RGB dimming that could deliver an excellent performance at the touch of a button.’

Does what it says on the tin The new Lighting Association Laboratories’ ‘verified’ scheme will independently measure and verify the safety and performance of lighting products, such as lamps, LED modules and luminaries against manufacturer’s claims. The results will be uploaded onto a publically accessible website, where the actual test results are published. The scheme is developed and managed by the Lighting Association Laboratories. Companies can commission it to performance verify their products, which once verified can carry the relevant logo and will be listed on a publically available website, www.Lalabverified.com

‘We are particularly pleased to be recognised in this way,’ commented Ptarmigan founder, Simon Fraser. ‘The Control Innovation Award is a new category for this year, reflecting the vital role that controls are playing in many commercial lighting design projects. It’s fantastic to be one of the first recipients of this important award.’

Performing for arts centre White Light has supported Omnibus Clapham’s plan to create a performance arts centre from the old Clapham Library. With the library due to relocate to a new building, the charity plans to turn the former library building into an arts performance hub for the community. The future of the venue has been uncertain but Omnibus, created by a group of

local people is determined to see the building retained and transformed. To help transform the space, Omnibus’ George Owen turned to local resident and lighting designer, Rob Halliday. He brought White Light on board to supply a simple, quick to install system of Source Fours to light the speaker, Fresnels to light the audience and LED battery-powered uplighters for the room. Owen said: ‘The lighting for these events gives them an enormously professional feel, really helping to create a sense of occasion for the sell-out audiences at our two shows so far.’ The events will feature famous local residents, with actress Miriam Margolyes and author and broadcaster, John O’Farrell already confirmed.

APPOINTMENTS GE Lighting has appointmented Simon Greenwood as commercial director from January 2012. Greenwood will be responsible for leading the commercial organisation in Europe, focusing on increasing the company’s market share and customer base. He joins the company after a stint as group sales director at Dextra Group. Stewart Langdown has been recruited as marketing director for Milton Keynes-based Ceravision. The new role will give him responsibility for all of the company's marketing activities on a worldwide basis. Langdown has more than 20 years experience in the lighting industry and is a well known and sought after speaker on the subject of lighting controls. He previously worked for Tridonic UK. The Wandsworth Group has taken on Mark Gay to the post of southern area sales manager. He will be responsible for account management of existing customers across the region. He will also develop existing and new customer relationships. Gay said: ‘This role gives me the opportunity to maximise the experience and contacts I already have while offering me the chance to move into new product areas that involve market leading, cutting edge technology.’

The Wandsworth Group has made a second appointment – that of Darren Beeson to the post of northern regional sales manager. The move comes as part of a nationwide expansion programme by Wandsworth as the company increases its sales team and develops its sales structure. Beeson will be responsible for managing a four-strong team of area sales managers across the company’s northern region as well as maintaining responsibility for his own territory, which spans the East Midlands, Yorkshire, Cheshire and Lincolnshire. Ligman has appointed Andrew Smith to the post of lighting solutions manager within its newly launched UK operation. Smith will form a key part of the senior management team at Ligman’s UK ofﬁce in Birmingham. He joins after 25 years in the industry working for a range of different companies, including manufacturers, distributors and speciﬁers.

Helvar in driving seat Helvar is expanding its range of components to include a series of constant current LED drivers with four variants available: 6w, 20w, 30w and 50-60w. All versions provide power with high efﬁciency to an LED light source and are designed to meet the stringent demands of indoor LED applications. Helvar’s constant current converters provide power to LED applications with a high level of efﬁciency (>0.8) and the range is designed to achieve quick installation times and long life. The driver’s dual current output (350m/A / 700mA) and universal power supply ensures adaptability for different applications and geographic areas. ‘Following the successful launch of our range of LED drivers last year, we have expanded the range to encompass a wider range of technical requirements,’ said Peter van der Kolk, product manager – LED at Helvar.

Since joining ACDC nine months ago, Daniel Hodgson has brought his wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. TL caught up with the respected designer to discuss his thriving career to date and the future direction of ACDC under his watch

TL: How are you getting on in your new role at ACDC? Time has flown by. It has been an incredibly exciting and challenging period of time, but most of all it’s been rewarding.

TL: What was it that influenced your decision to join ACDC? A whole new way of life. The opportunity to go back to what I started at when studying my Masters at Central Saint Martins, and the opportunity to do what I’ve enjoyed most about being a lighting designer, which is designing the specials and creating something new and innovative that makes people think. I felt this was a great opportunity to combine my knowledge of lighting and product design to help ACDC in the design of new products. My office here is a double decker bus, so my two-yearold son thinks I’ve moved from being a train driver (I used to commute into London and he dropped me off at the station with my wife), to being a bus driver. He’s able to sit in the driving seat so that’s another good reason for joining ACDC!

TL: What does your role entail? My team is also based on the bus, so office and work life is a little different to what I was used to. I’m currently running a team of six people, split into three sub sections of creative design, design for manufacture and design process and quality. Design for manufacture is a new area for us to ensure that as a team we commit more time and resources to launching successful products internally into our production department and therefore onwards to the client.

TL: What do you plan to bring to the company? The key factor in terms of what I hope to bring to the team is my experience as a lighting designer and the design process that a designer goes through from concept stage through to installation and commissioning - remembering that most commissioning is done at the top of a ladder with one hand holding on, the other focusing.

TL: Prior to ACDC, which companies have you previously designed for? I worked for Light Projects and Concord Marlin. After this I had the pleasure of working with Gary Campbell and Bernhard Bsetlier at Campbell Design, where I learnt so much about the need for integrated lighting design, appreciating the lit effect without always seeing the luminaire. From there I moved to BDP Lighting working alongside Mark Ridler and Martin Lupton, moving from small scale detailed projects at Campbell Design to large city master plans.

TL: How did you become involved in the lighting industry originally? I was involved with a design audit as part of my Masters in Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins focusing on the area between Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden for Westminster Council. I was last into the room, nobody else wanted to be responsible for the lighting section and I took it on. From there I just buried myself in it and loved it. Over the period of the project, other designers involved realised that lighting was key to their design too so I got involved with all other disciplines. I remember having my interview with James Wadsworth and referring to different bulbs. He told me: ‘they’re grown in the ground – we work with lamps.’

TL: What has been the most prestigious project you’ve worked on? Probably Dagenham Civic Centre, as it won a lighting design award a few years back. I think we thought it wouldn’t win because the judges wouldn’t want to go to Dagenham but it was a project that had a great team and was incredibly rewarding. We had the opportunity of project managing the refurbishment of Grade II listed luminaires. At one point we found some fittings that were part of the original building with 30 years of dust on, and we designed new pendants in the Council chamber using the original pieces of glass.

TL: And what has been your favourite to date? Niketown London.

Life is always evolving, as will the world of lighting and design, and we need to keep at the forefront of it

I worked on this over a number of years while at Campbell Design & BDP. To have the opportunity of working on such a key and prestigious project working alongside the designers at Nike and also the architect, HMKM was always a pleasure. It was probably the one thing that made the move to ACDC the hardest as we had such a good design team. The last phase we completed involved a chandelier made of basketball hoops, trainers, skipping ropes and tennis balls. I don’t think designers get those opportunities very often.

TL: What do you believe to be the most important aspect of lighting design? Simple – the lit effect! A space and mood is defined by its lit appearance. The rest of the team at ACDC will laugh at me for saying the ‘lit effect’ again as that’s what I’ve been saying since I joined.

TL: How important is the quality of products to you when you’re designing a lighting scheme? As a designer, knowing that what you’ve spec’d has been installed is always good news first of all, and knowing the products are of a certain quality provides a high level of reassurance that the scheme designed will be there for some time. Designing with long term maintenance in mind is also key for me, knowing that the fittings are of a sufficient quality that will allow them to have the lamp changed, and the fitting returned to its previous focused position is very

TL: What has been your most memorable lighting experience to date? Difficult to pick between the Fete Lumiere in Lyon that I’ve been to on a number of occasions, and the first time I went to the Jewish Museum in Berlin. The museum encouraged the use of all of your senses; the use of daylight to bring out your emotions in certain spaces and integrated lighting for way finding and exhibition lighting was inspirational. The Fete Lumiere year-on-year allowed me to share my passion for lighting with my wife, without going into individual installations - again it encouraged the use of all of your senses and the wow factor is always huge.

TL: What do you hope to achieve over the next 10 years? To play a huge part in ACDC as it continues to grow and to work alongside the world’s greatest designers on products & projects, and continue to bring innovative thinking in light to the market.

As with all things in life, there is a time and place. From experience, I would often present a lighting scheme to a client, and more often than not the first question was ‘can we do all of this with LED?’ You therefore end up going through a degree of education, both about technology and their budget. They have provided designers with the opportunity to consider alternative light sources to what may have previously been an assumed source, but I think there will be a time and place for other light sources for a few years yet.

TL: What has been the most recent development of importance in lighting technology? The recent developments in remote phosphor are something that we will keep a close eye on with a view to new products.

TL: How much further can lighting design, with the restrictions of current technology, go? I hope that they can develop a great deal – I’ve only just moved back into product design! As designers, we need to invite technologies and opportunities from other disciplines into our design process to develop market opportunities. I would like to think that part of our responsibility as a manufacturer is to provide the designer with opportunities that sometimes they didn’t think they needed or were looking for.

Keeping up standards WILA’s group technical director, Peter Le Manquais is giving a series of Society of Light and Lighting Masterclasses on meeting the new European lighting standard, which will run until May 2012. Here, Le Manquais, gives an overview of what these are – and who they’ll beneﬁt

ith the recent introduction of a new European standard for the lighting of indoor workplaces, there are a range of amendments to the 2002 standard, which designers of any lit scheme need to be aware of. As this is the ﬁrst revision to the European standard (EN 12464-1: 2011 Lighting of Indoor Work Places) for the lighting of indoor spaces since 2002, many additions have been made to take into account the beneﬁts of maximising the use of controls and day lighting in workplaces.

Where previously the 2002 standard favoured lighting the workplace for that early winter’s evening, the new standard not only takes into account, but encourages the greater use of daylight and lighting controls in schemes. For retroﬁts, increased day lighting might not be an option, but with energy efﬁciency high on the agenda, lighting controls are becoming increasingly important and with this, the new standard encourages the implication of EN 15193: Energy performance of buildings – energy requirements of lighting.

Climbing up the walls…

Whereas the 2002 standard concentrated on horizontal illuminance, this latest revision has taken on board SLL addendums to LG3 and LG7, which stated that there should be 50 per cent of the task illuminance on the walls and 30 per cent on the ceiling. By incorporating the requirement for speciﬁc levels of illuminance on the walls and ceiling, the

new standard hopes to put an end to the depressing trend over the past few years of lighting work spaces with swathes of downlights alone.

Getting the job done….

An interesting addition to the new standard is the move towards activity related lighting. It is no longer necessary to light an area to a uniformity of 0.7 and the ratio of minimum to average illumination can now vary between 0.4 and 0.7. With this amendment comes the realisation that high, uniform illuminance is only vital in key task-based areas and not necessarily in corridors or other general spaces.

The only way is up…..

Another new introduction to the standard comes in the form of mean cylindrical illuminance. This encourages designers and specifiers to create schemes, which deliver 50 lux on the vertical plane at heights between 1.2m and 1.6m above floor level, within activity areas. It is hoped that this new recommendation will encourage the use of daylight where possible and by default, discourage the use of downlights, which traditionally provide narrow shafts of light. With these and many more additions and revisions to the 2002 standard, the creators of EN 12464-1: 2011 are hoping that it will give designers and specifiers the tools they need to provide a better place for people to work, so that performance is enhanced and the light is efficiently delivered to where it is needed; saving energy in the process.

From retro LED graffiti to night cityscapes with illuminated buildings, Dawn Gay looks at how new installations are setting the world alight Urban light art

The French have long been illuminating Renaissance chateau turrets on summer’s evenings with Son et Lumière sound and light shows. But it’s their Fête des Lumières light festival, held this month (8-11 December) in Lyon that puts France light years ahead. The Rhône-Alpes city’s festival started in 1852 when locals lit thousands of candles and poured onto the streets to celebrate the new Virgin Mary statue on Fourvière Hill. These days the event attracts around three million visitors a year. Jeanne Nicolle, one of the key organisers of Fête des Lumières, says that the community event gives Lyon a chance

to put the city’s specialist knowledge of lighting into action. ‘City Hall has a very particular knowledge of lighting, illuminating the city’s streets, buildings and two rivers all year. This special knowledge, along with technology, innovation and sustainability are the perfect combination for the festival.’ As part of the city’s ongoing lighting plan, 300 buildings are lit all year round. Among the 70 light exhibits, ranging from light shows to architectural designs, there are several must-sees. Concert light artist, Marie-Jeanne Gauthé is flaunting the type of projected imagery he has used to launch Disneyland rides, Dubai hotels and Jean Michel Jarre gigs to illuminate

central Place des Terreaux. Jeanne Nicolle says that Lyon is a world light art leader because it showcases exciting fresh talent, for example, Carol Martin and Thibaut Berbezier, who have created a colossal-scale pinball machine beside Célestins Theatre. She explains: ’We love to find new light artists from different fields like concert design, architecture, fine art and 3D work and exhibit their work alongside the established artists. Thanks to the importance of the festival we can take a risk, find new creators and help them to grow.’

The medieval city of Durham has also become a light art pioneer, hosting the largest light festival in the UK, Lumiere. The festival has just completed a successful second year (17-20 November) with 30 light artists’ work on show around the city. Lumiere has also given Tracey Emin the chance to re-exhibit her poignant ‘Be Faithful to Your Dreams’ neon sign in the setting of St Nicholas’s Chapel’s abandoned churchyard. Helen Marriage, director at Artichoke, which manage Lumiere, says the festival is raising the awareness of light art in the UK. ‘The intention is to showcase the many ways in which artists work in light. And it seems to be a medium that works particularly well for a community without much access to galleries. By programming a festival of contemporary works in the public domain in the middle of winter, we attract huge audiences – many of whom wouldn’t class themselves as arts attendees.’ She explains that during these stressful economic times, light art is an economic boost to Durham. ‘Lumiere acts as a magnet for inward investment and ancillary spending. We make use of lots of local labour and services and we try to spend the money that we raise from the festival in the immediate area.’ Marriage says that it’s hard to choose highlights between the 35 works exhibited at the festival. ‘There are many artists this year who have experimented with new technologies or have tried things for the first time. For example, Boo Beaumont has made a film from the scanned x-ray images of plants and Lumalabs, while Paul Goodfellow has invented a new form of 3-D mapping,’ she says.

Creative illuminations are being used internationally to mark new developments Regenerating King’s Cross The night sky above King’s Cross Station is aglow with Jacque Rival’s latest light art installation until April 2013. The French artist, architect and Lumiere exhibitor has designed a quirky, rainbow-coloured birdcage called Identified Flying Object (IFO) to hover over the developing area. Rival describes his innovation: ‘IFO is

a monumental and special object, which connects its universal shape and structure to light. Each part of the birdcage will be illuminated and the birdcage’s bars will become a light structure. An LED system will be used to give sense to the installation and a dynamic movement around the birdcage.’ Curators Michael Pinsky and Stéphanie Delcroix who are running the King’s Cross

arts project Relay, and who manage the installation say: ‘Jacques Rival’s response to King’s Cross is both poetic and pertinent. This nomadic sculpture follows the flux and flow of this new district, which is evolving day by day. Over the coming months IFO will be found over coffee kiosks, amidst the construction sites, on buildings and, of course, in the sky.’

New developments It’s not just regenerating areas that are receiving a boost from light art. Creative illuminations are being used internationally to mark new developments. Singapore’s sustainable ‘i Light’ Marina Bay festival was launched to celebrate an area, which has seen a new state-of-the-art

theatre complex, Esplanade, and the latest 57-storey, casino hotel, Marina Bay Sands. The inaugural event in 2010, using carbon efficient, low-energy lighting, attracted around 433,000 visitors to view the 25 installations along the Singapore waterfront. The art selection is still taking place for the 2012 event (6 March to 1 April) and the cultural theme will be ‘Light meets Asia’. Mary-Anne Kyriakou, managing director of Smart Light, which directs the festival, explains the ecological philosophy behind the event: ‘The festival aims to encourage the creative industry to re-think artificial light in city environments and embody sustainable practises in their projects. The festival aims to reduce carbon through carrying out stakeholder campaigns such as switching off lights and turning off the air-conditioning during the festival.’

It looks good when it’s turned off as well as on and has a tangible quality to it. technology, which is going down a storm with artists. ‘We’re doing more and more clever things with the control side of neon. The basic product has not changed for 100 years. It is still a glass tube with gas in it, but the new hi tech interactive sensors and software means you can to turn it on and off or dim it. On face value it looks like neon but the bit behind is very clever.’

Master and commander Lighting control has evolved to a state where static and mobile control systems are readily available. Today, a core component of these systems is energy conservation, says Dave Howell

he control of lighting over the last few years has become an essential tool for any specifier. These control systems are vital - none more so than when the eco credentials of a space are essential to quantify. Organisations like the Energy Saving Trust have schemes that enable lighting control systems to be evaluated, as well as the many luminaires that are currently available for deployment in a wide range of environments. The technology that’s receiving the most press at the moment is the continued and

rapid development of the LED sector. The LED industry has seen a meteoric expansion over a very short time with new devices appearing on the market each quarter. LEDs have proven energy saving credentials, but they still require high levels of control to ensure they deliver on their environmental promises. Mark Blanchfield, MD and technical director of Totalight says: ‘Both testing and practical use of LEDs in a variety of commercial situations such as shops, airports, hotels etc. demonstrate that LEDs are more than equal to the task of

replacing traditional light sources.’ Research company IMS states that in 2010 the world lighting market was worth $83bn, with lamps making up 24 per cent of the total. By 2015, the value of the market will stand at $115bn, with lamps making up 33 per cent. Philip Smallwood, IMS Research Lighting market analyst commented: ‘Growth is stemming from advancements in LEDs, which are increasing their efficiency, while decreasing their overall price. Currently, LEDs make up 10 per cent of the total lighting market, but by

With, on average 25 per cent of an organisation’s electricity costs coming from lighting, any control platform that can reduce this financial burden is welcome by all specifiers 2015, this is expected to increase to 46 per cent.’ It is clear that lamp technology is developing apace, but what about the control aspect of these systems? No one is denying that the new breed of luminaires are more energy efficient, but it has been shown that the environment that these new lamps are used in, and the control mechanism attached to them can have a profound impact on their overall performance.

Control and save With, on average 25 per cent of an organisation’s electricity costs coming from lighting, any control platform that can reduce this financial burden is welcome by all specifiers. The control of any particular lighting installation can be one of the most important aspects of energy conservation. Lighting that is left on, or not economically

controlled can become an increasing cost burden. Simple PIR detectors that control lighting installations can be highly effective. However, a cost saving of around 20 per cent can be achieved with occupancy control systems that can be used with high frequency lighting and switch start installations. Systems, such as i-3 Control Technology from Siemens illustrate how a compact and flexible lighting control system can be installed. And with these systems able to take advantage of the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme, the cost advantage is clear. When choosing a lighting management system it is vital to clearly understand the requirements of the installation. Energy efficiency with lighting has many components that must be included in the evaluation process. It’s important to consider presence detection, solar-shading, window blind

control, dimming and how the lighting is a part of the overall fabric of the building. Lighting control systems in use today will likely use either DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) that is used in 30 St Mary Axe and the headquarters of ADIA, LON that offers networking capabilities for building services and IP (Internet Protocol) that is increasingly being used to transmit data, which can include lighting set up and management instructions. Platforms from companies including CentralLite offer IP-based lighting management services for the hospitality sector that enable the system to be phased in floor-by-floor if needed. And systems such as Eluma from Somar can be programmed to react intelligently to its surroundings. Other systems include the well-developed Dynalite from Philips. The system is in use throughout a wide range of premises, including the Scarlet Hotel Cornwall. Since installing the system the hotel has achieved lighting efficiency of 3.36 watts per square metre. ‘The technology of lighting and lighting control continues to expand into all aspects of the built environment,’ said Bert Verschuren, Philips Dynalite general manager. ‘The need for pure energy management and resultant reductions in Total Cost of Operations (TCO) are well understood and easy to measure. When energy consumption is reduced through the installation of more efficient light sources and luminaires and basic lighting control strategies such as scheduling, occupancy sensing and daylight harvesting are employed, the result can be measured via the energy bill.’ Specifiers have used PIR sensors as a core weapon in their armoury when developing lighting control systems to reduce energy consumption. The future looks increasingly ultrasonic as this technology begins to make itself felt in the lighting control market. Already Philips’ Dynalite is combining its standard PIR, lux level and IR receivers into one sensor that can be adjusted by remote control. The advances in lighting technology clearly lead by LED must be complemented with comprehensive control systems that can not only manage the installation itself, but also ensure that it operates as optimum energy efficiency. In an age of rising energy costs, lighting control systems will become central for all specifiers.

Painting by numbers Peter Bartram looks at some of the architectural lighting projects that are making waves in towns and cities around the UK

hen the Novotel hotel at Heathrow Airport decided to improve its exterior architectural lighting, it fastened onto two issues which are current hot topics among lighting designers — the aesthetics of the design and the sustainability of the installation. The hotel’s owners wanted to improve its visibility from the road as it is partially hidden by trees, and have the opportunity to vary the lighting effects to suit the occasion. At the same time, they wanted to reduce the energy consumed in lighting the building’s exterior. Previously, the hotel had used 12x330W halogen lamps to light its outside walls. It replaced these with Osram High Power Flood RGB luminaires which each consume just 55W. This change means that, when all lights are switched on, the hotel is saving a massive 5,340W an hour. Moreover, the colours of the exterior lighting can now be changed so that the

hotel is more visible from a distance and can be given a mood to suit an occasion, such as a red wash for Valentine’s day. The Novotel is a good example of the key fact that lighting is not just an end in itself but often part of a business solution. ‘The primary focus is to understand the customer’s objectives and the end result,’ says Francis Wright, general manager of Traxon Technologies, a specialist in LED lighting systems. ‘Whether it’s providing lighting for Glasgow harbour footbridge or for the Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi, the applications can be quite varied, as can the budget. For example, light colour and matching architectural design styles are important, but also energy efficient solutions, which are key for cost saving and the environment,’ he says. ‘The lighting scheme is always driven by what the client wants to

achieve,’ confirms Rowena Preiss, creative director of lighting at Philips in the UK. An example is London’s County Hall. When new lighting was installed by Architainment Lighting, County Hall’s owners wanted a scheme that highlighted the distinctive building as a notable after-dark landmark and was sufficiently adaptable that it could meet the needs of County Hall’s varied clients. Architainment replaced existing fittings with 16 Philips ColorReach Powercore LED modules. The modules were positioned at intervals between the building’s columns with four being focused on County Hall’s façade. The ColorReach modules can provide 5,000 lumens of light projection over a distance of 500 feet. And the new installation has also addressed the sustainability agenda. The previous 600W fittings have been replaced with 290W fittings, saving more than 50 per cent on energy usage. It is more flexible, too. For example, because each of the fixtures can be

addressed and controlled individually, it is possible to use one beam of light to bathe the area with coloured light at street level while using a different beam to project a complementary colour further up the walls. The key to achieving both energy saving and greater flexibility in the way lighting is used rests with two key technologies —

light management systems, and LED and OLED light sources. ‘Light management systems enable us to deliver intelligently networked solutions,’ says Wright. ‘LEDs will replace most exterior products whereas OLED solutions complement an ambient lighting role. Technologies such as LED and OLED are

enabled to their full capacity by implementing light management systems.’ ‘LED is moving extremely rapidly at the moment and the light output of an LED chip is improving day by day,’ says Preiss. ‘Designers are able to light larger surfaces with one fitting or able to light larger distances or larger areas, such as the National Theatre,

which is also lit with LEDs. ‘Five years ago, that wouldn’t have been possible. As technologies move forward, it means that designers have more tools to use to create effects on architectural facades with fewer fittings.’ London is a great example of one city that has been transformed at night by more adventurous and creative architectural lighting. The Romanesque magnificence of the Natural History Museum now has an LED system that enables the building to be bathed in different colours while cutting the electrical load by 75 per cent compared with the previous lighting plot. And there are buildings that have been given a lighting make-over for special occasions, such as Tower Bridge for the Switched On London Festival or Battersea Power Station for London Fashion Week. But hanging over the whole question of exterior architectural lighting is whether, at a time of rising energy costs and concern with global warming, buildings should be externally lit at all. ‘It’s the million dollar question,’ says Preiss. ‘The most sustainable way is to not light it at all. That raises a lot of questions within the design community. But there is a lot of scope to improve the environment that we live in with lighting. LEDs offer up to a 90

per cent energy saving against a traditional lighting scheme. But if you’re faced with a new building, the key questions are what is it going look like and how much energy are you prepared to expend on lighting it?’ But Preiss points out that every single project is very different. ‘So each one needs to be looked at on its own terms,’ she says. ‘This is one of the most crucial times for lighting designers and it’s a critical time to ensure that the clients understand the importance of having a lighting designer involved in their project - because it helps them manage their energy and it enables them to explore opportunities where they can displace energy consumption. For example, they can release energy from inefficiently lit areas inside the building for external lighting.’

Wright points out that exterior lighting can become more sustainable by reducing electrical loads to light buildings and their surroundings. He says: ‘We can do this through the use of technologies such as LED, but also using optical control to reduce spill light in surrounding areas and, therefore, maximising the amount of light falling onto the area concerned.For example, dynamic colour solutions would often have been achieved with the use of a multi-array of projectors with varying coloured lamps or filters. Solid state lighting can now achieve these effects from compact, single source systems, reducing cabling, system maintenance and overall environmental impact.’ As Wright says, ‘it’s all about creating energy efficient, yet beautiful lighting solutions’.

Street wise If LEDs are the perfect light source for street lighting, are local authorities right to be dragging their heels regarding implementation, asks Tom Holmes?

he UK’s street lights are ageing. There are currently around seven million columns in the UK, of which roughly two million are over 30 years old, and a further one million are over 40 years old. For councils, this equates to a total of £260m a year spent on energy, and 1.3m tonnes of carbon. The statistics indicate that many councils will have to replace existing stock, if not for economic reasons for environmental ones. Among the frontrunners to replace existing HPS lamps are LEDs. There’s little doubt that the medium is becoming mainstream, with many manufacturers pouring resources into developing affordable and effective LED-based products. ‘LED solutions deliver many beneﬁts,’ says Andy Gowen of Philips, ‘from providing endusers with a better quality light to reducing

costs for Local Authorities and aiding the environment through lower energy usage and reduced emissions. ‘The very long life of LEDs virtually eliminates the sort of maintenance and replacement required by traditional street lighting resulting in significant cost savings.’ We are, however at the early stages as far as cost-effective, energy-efficient LED systems are concerned, specifically ones that are ready

to be rolled out on a mass scale. Because LED luminaires remain a relatively new, rapidly growing technology, they’re typically more expensive than their conventional counterparts, though several trials in the UK and abroad are working on solutions, with mixed feedback. ‘In principal, LEDs are an ideal source for outdoor lighting in terms of ability to accurately place light without pollution,

efficacy, vibration resistance and longevity’ says Roger Sexton of Xicato. ‘There’s lots of data in the US that clearly shows LED-based street light solutions are within the payback that most municipalities find acceptable.’ Responses from the various trials reaffirm what Sexton says. In June 2010, Palo Alto in California took part in a demonstration, replacing HPS lamps with LEDs, evaluating their lighting energy, performance, and economic factors. In total, seven LEDs and three induction lights were installed on two residential streets, replacing 70w HPS lamps. The LEDs produced more uniform light output with less intrusion into adjacent houses, and a 44 per cent reduction in energy. The system performed as expected, while feedback from the local community was also largely positive. Crucially though, and slightly at odds with Sexton’s assertion, the payback period for a retrofit was 12 years, and only improves to 10 for brand new installations. This represents a negative net present value for a retrofit, which for most towns and cities isn’t an attractive proposition. The trial in Palo Alto isn’t an isolated incident either. In Portland, Oregon a similar project

had a payback period of 20 years, while in Leavenworth, California, a car park installation that reduced energy consumption by 63 per cent also reduced luminance by 68 per cent. Gowen doesn’t think this will be a long term problem. ‘Payback can vary depending on the criteria used in calculating the period and whether it incorporates maintenance costs, traffic management and energy inflation. With the rapid pace of developments in LED performance, total cost of ownership results are improving all the time. ‘There are also unquantifiable benefits to consider, such as the security and safety white

light provides and the resulting beautiﬁcation of the urban environment.’ Closer to home, several European cities are conducting low-energy street lighting trials as part of the Better Lighting in Sustainable Streets (BLISS) project - an initiative that is shaping an energy-efﬁcient street-lighting strategy for Europe. At present, BLISS has projects in the UK, Netherlands, Belgium and Germany which are part funded by the European Regional Development Grant. In the UK, Philips has worked alongside St Helens Council on two

The Coronation Drive Estate in Haydock is assessing and comparing residential street lighting options, while the project on Tithe Barn Road in Billinge is investigating the effectiveness of LED road lighting. Following the installations in June, Rory Lingham, assistant director at St Helens Council, said ‘the key to our proposal is to develop a range of socially acceptable, energy-reducing solutions while considering their wider social and economic impacts in terms of public perception, crime, accident and economic regeneration.’ The project isn’t due to report its results in full until early 2012, though it has shed light on some issues. It suggests that, in the case of a town or a village, all costs for setting up a sustainable lighting system (from cabling to column, fitting and lamp) are recovered after a period of approximately 30 years. In the course of that period, there is substantial energy saving. It also suggests that determining the light source that is most suitable for a specific area, for example, isn’t a cut and dried decision. Brighter future Similar to BLISS is the ENLIGHT collaboration, a group of thirty leading European companies working to advance the LED industry. The three-year programme is part-funded by the ENIAC Undertaking, a public-private partnership focusing on nanoelectronics. The project aims to improve LED-based lighting through innovations in integrated lighting solutions, reducing energy consumption by 40 per cent in comparison to current LED systems. They hope to achieve this by developing more compact and efﬁcient lighting electronics, drivers and controls, which together will lead to optimised LED modules. Gowen says: ‘The opportunity to control LED solutions allows for energy management, reducing light output as appropriate and helping to fulﬁll people’s needs and patterns of use throughout the hours of darkness, simply by adjusting the intensity and hence energy consumption of the LED lanterns.

‘When there is very little traffic on the roads, drivers do not require the same level of lighting as when traffic is at its heaviest. The ability to dim LEDs is an ideal means of saving energy without adversely affecting either light uniformity or safety. LED solutions can use as little as one third of the energy used by traditional street lighting when used with such control systems. So, how close are we to seeing costeffective, high performance LED street lights? ‘Local authorities already see LEDs as a viable solution and adoption of this innovative lighting is taking place’ says Gowen. ‘The next stage is now for Local Authorities to consider the opportunity to control and manage street lighting and the benefits that this can bring. Understanding that, rather than just turning lights off, it is possible to create a safe and comfortable environment yet still reduce energy consumption in order to stay within the ever decreasing utility budgets.’

Very big house in the country Focus SB and Lutron were at the heart of a recent refurb of Stanmore Hall

efurbishing a country house first built in 1810 is no mean feat — least of all when it has to be stripped back to bare walls, and have a supporting structure inserted to ensure the chimney column doesn’t collapse. The original structure at Stanmore Hall was built by a gold merchant and further extended in 1860. Some of the designs were thought to be by John Ruskin, the prominent social thinker and philanthropist. Current owners Bill and Patti Hyatt bought the property in 2010 despite the state of disrepair it had fallen into. The pair had a vision for the 12-bedroom Georgian mansion home, which included a swimming pool and bespoke kitchen. ‘We had to plan every room down to the finest, minute detail from the very outset. Sockets and switches could have really clashed had they not been considered, but thankfully my wife is a stickler for detail’ says Bill Hyatt. ‘Focus SB was recommended to us and the service we have received throughout could not have been better. Some of the finishes may have been challenging, but nothing has been too difficult for them to produce bespoke.’ ‘As part of their vision for the interior

design, Bill and Patty knew that the electrical accessories would play an important part’ says Alex Simmons of Focus SB. The Dorchester range was used throughout to ‘suit the age of the house’, adds Simmons. The finishes included bronze metal antique, matte black, colour-coated pewter and gloss white. The lighting throughout is controlled using the latest Lutron Homeworks Whole Home lighting system. This specialised system has been designed specifically for use in luxury homes and has been on the market for around 10 years. It provides convenient, intelligent control for the lighting and shades in the home, and can be integrated with security and audiovisual systems. The system is controlled by Lutron’s SeeTouch switches throughout the house, for which Focus SB supplied 53 covers. Other hardware components included 42 power modules, 15 LED load dimming interfaces, two contact closure boards for motion sensor interfacing and an 8 Series Generation 5 Processor. The 8 Series Processor allows all the SeeTouch switches to be programmed to control any of the lighting loads connected to any of the Power Modules plus brings added functionality such as Mood Setting, Master Off, Panic Mode and Holiday Modes to the home. As well as standard logic, the processor brings enhanced benefits to the system – for example, in the case of the Holiday Mode, the system keeps a rolling log of how the lighting system is actually used over any two week period, so that when Bill and Patty go away on holiday it repeats a randomised version of this to

The beauty of the LED system is that it brings modern control and functionality to the period property, without being intrusive or looking out of place make the house look like its being lived in. In addition to the conventional halogen and low energy fittings throughout the house, the lighting also consists of custom RGB colour changeable lights. These have been designed around the fixtures and fittings in the reception rooms and bathrooms in order to allow bespoke moods to be set by the homeowner. In the case of the Avenue setting, LED lights run from outside the front door, through the hallway and out onto the rear patio – all colour matched and switched via the control as the Avenue. The beauty of such a system is that it brings modern control and functionality to the period property, without being intrusive or looking out of place. It’s testament to the skill and quality of Lutron and Focus SB that the traditional feel to the property hasn’t been compromised ‘It was a fantastic job to be involved in’ says Alex Simmons, ‘Focus SB is very pleased with the end results as is the customer, whose expectations were met.’

Christies Designer, Nicholas Bukorovi of Healthcare Lighting took on the challenge of making a beautiful building even better

esigned by AFL Architects and said to cost around £35m, Manchester’s new Patient Treatment Centre is the largest early clinical trials unit in the world. Home to the Christies Cancer Centre, the brief to the architects was to take onboard comments from staff and the patients to help the new facility provide an even better patient experience during treatment or while undertaking clinical trials. The facility has proved a great success and

has resulted in patients getting quicker treatment within a greatly-improved environment. Nicholas Bukorovi from Healthcare Lighting was tasked with designing both the interior and exterior lighting concepts. The exterior had to be modelled in a way that displayed and complemented the ﬂowing lines of the building, while being sensitive to environmental issues. AFL architects was extremely proud of its trademark feature — a copper plate

It achieved everything we set out to achieve; it models the building beautifully, accentuating the building’s natural flowing and curvaceous lines façade with tiled ribbon wrapping over and around the glazing, to create a soft undulating and dynamic form; turning an ordinary building into an iconic one. The textural finish and rich tones of copper were specifically chosen to blend with the brick and terracotta cladding on adjacent buildings, while at the same time creating a beautiful frontage, with a natural patina that will weather with time. ACDC cold cathode lamps were specified for their ability to be shaped to conform to almost any configuration, offering complete design flexibility and avoiding uneven light levels — which made it a perfect solution for this application. Bukorovi says: ‘I was delighted with the lit effect of the cold cathode. It achieved everything we set out to achieve; it models the building beautifully accentuating the building’s natural flowing and curvaceous lines.’ Bukorovi explains how he came to realise that cold cathode was the ideal lighting solution for this application: ‘Once we had verified the technical, practical and cost-related issues with cold cathode, it quickly proved to be a far superior option to the other light sources we were considering, so I contacted ACDC, and after various consultations and trials we decided to run with this solution.’ The system was installed within a purposebuil,t extended cill detail, but was still exposed to adverse weather conditions. Because of this, ACDC proposed its Covelite Exterior IP Compact system, which offers exterior-rated lamps and integral IP65-rated energy efficient control gear delivering efficiencies of 65 lumens per metre. ACDC manufactures the lamp in a number of different colour temperatures, but Bukorovi selected the 2400K variant, explaining: ‘Right from the start the one thing that immediately won me over was the colour temperature choice, I found that the warm white lamp rendered the copper facia with a rich natural colour and really enhanced the material properties.’ Cold cathode is a bespoke lighting system that requires installation by professionally qualified personnel. Bukorovi comments on how the ACDC installation engineers performed: ‘The installation went extremely well - the client was pleased with the professional approach of ACDC and the way they conducted themselves on site’. Discussing the overall project, he says: ‘When

we started designing the exterior lighting, we quite rightly went through the process of evaluating the various options open to us, commenting on the technical and practical merits of each, but in the end there was really only one option that worked and that was the cold cathode option - and the finished lit result fully justifies that. Would I use ACDC again? Of course I would!’ The building has been accredited with the

BREEAM 'Excellent' rating and achieved finalist status in the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Building of the Year Award.

In the spotlight Anolis performs for Emma Morgan at Sydney’s NIDA

ustralia’s award-winning theatre complex, The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Kensington, Sydney has been transformed into a colourful palette of light. European LED manufacturer, Anolis has engineered and produced a custom lighting solution for a major new installation in the impressive foyer space. In a complete transformation, the space can be themed and coloured for different events without the need for additional equipment. The concept was designed and developed in just four weeks by Anolis and delivered to NIDA 56

by the ULA Group. The energy-efficient lighting scheme replaced 28 recessed 500W PAR 56 halogen fittings with Anolis ArcSource 48 MultiChip (MC) fixture, specifically designed for the project. The ArcSource 48 MC consists of 12 10W Cree MCE RGBW LED chips, which enable full and seamless RGB colour mixing plus a selection of ‘real’ whites in a variety of colour temperatures. The scheme uses approximately 60 per cent less power compared to the previous installation and further long-term savings will follow due to the replaced ongoing maintenance required for LEDs. NIDA’s lighting supervisor Adrian Wright

explained that a major requirement of the brief was to make a signiﬁcant reduction in electricity consumption across NIDA’s public spaces. They also wanted to utilise light sources that offered more versatility and dynamics than just a standard white lighting scheme. The decision to select Anolis came following several options and proposals for LED replacements. The building, designed a decade ago by HASSELL in association with Peter Armstrong Architecture, has gold glazed walls, a dramatic sloping canopy and nowadays takes on beaconlike lighting qualities after dark. The lighting for the foyer presented many

challenges, including the issue of throw distance for the ﬁxtures. With a distance of over 10m, it was essential that the output be the same as the previous scheme, while maintaining low power consumption and operating costs. The primary factor for choosing ArcSource 48 MC over other products was its ability to act as a fully homogenized light source, smooth, rich and powerful across the entire colour spectrum as they didn’t want to see any blockiness or pixilation in the source. Wright said: ‘I wanted plenty of headroom on the intensity front, and as a result, our currently programmed lighting states are all around 50 per cent.’ They are run via an

Ecue control system. The ArcSource 48 MCs fitted nicely into the original PAR 56 housings at NIDA, producing more lux than their predecessors, with convection cooling ensuring silent operation and each unit individually DMX addressable. NIDA is a high profile centre of training for talented young people interested in a professional career in theatre, film, television and the performing arts. The new installation got a welcomed response. Wright concluded: ‘I’m impressed with the support from both Anolis and the ULA Group in enabling us to choose such an outstanding lighting fixture.’

Miami ice Vibrant colours and clever transitions make Haven’s lighting scheme one to be admired, says Rianna Fry

Haven was one of these amazing projects with real scope to illustrate what’s achievable with good lighting

ocated in the trendy South Beach district of Miami, Florida, Haven is an intimate restaurant, which boasts a tremendous Anolis LED lighting scheme. The concept was created by lighting designer, David Chesal in conjunction with the venue’s owner, Mike Boles — who also happens to be a hospitality designer. Chesal and Boles have partnered up previously to bring to life innovative, themed environments and both designers are fans of the Anolis LED brand. However this most recent creation features a high-tech light and sound installation that retains the warmth and accessibility that Boles believes will appeal to both locals and out-of-towners. ‘I needed a real quality and very reliable LED system to complement the style and elegance of the Haven marque,’ he explains. The concept requires both the lighting and sound to partner together and seamlessly transform the establishment, according to the time of day and the type of atmosphere wanted. This all-encompassing ambiance is established through attention to detail and technical indifference. Plus, the walls, which act as large HD projection windows, provide

Project focus space for one continuous digital image to be streamed, showcasing scenic views or abstract video art. These scenes add to the constantly evolving environment and are also practical for use during private events. The lighting scheme runs from the main hub of the venue right through to the toilets, where custom recessed boxes have been scooped out of the ceiling, and fitted with powerful Anolis ArcSource 7 RGB WWs, with six degree lenses. The light sources are hardly noticeable to the eye, so produce dramatic illusory pools of light from a hidden source. Additional touches include a ceiling grid of 1,000 colour-changing, frosted, replica ice cubes as used by Haven’s mixologists, combined with 14 zones of soft LED downlighting and a walnuttree structure with an illuminated canopy for additional warmth. And it’s not just the interior that boasts a fancy lighting system. In fact the magic starts outside where Haven’s 20-seat sidewalk café offers cushioned teak armchairs for open-air dining. Embedded in the overhang above are Anolis ArcLine Outdoor Optic fixtures fitted with 25 x 6 degree lenses, giving the exact throw angle required to light the floor section below perfectly without spillage.

‘Haven was one of these amazing projects with real scope to illustrate what's achievable with good lighting, and how this can add to the whole visitor experience and boost its success, literally as a chameleon-style environment,’ Chesal adds. ‘It was seriously inspirational working with Mike on the project, and I am very proud of the results of his visionand imagination.’

In addition to the aesthetics, Haven also beneﬁts from the low power consumption and minimal ongoing maintenance costs of utilising LEDs. The project is a true representation of inspiring up-to-the-minute lighting design; from the aesthetics to the effects. What’s more, it’s a true demonstration of how energy-efﬁcient lighting can be used in an unconventional way.

of the world London-based lighting designer, Nick Gray of Renegade pulled out all the stops to create a glamorous, high altitude lighting scheme for Kasabian

he British rock band was playing a prestigious gig on top of a New York skyscraper during a publicity event for fashion brand, Mulberry. The show - one of a series of events celebrating Mulberry's fortieth birthday - was staged on the rooftop of the Skylight West building in New York's Midtown district. The recently renovated venue offers the largest private rooftop event space in the city as well as superlative panoramic views of the

surrounding area. Both Mulberry and Kasabian are regular clients of Gray and his creative live visual design company, Renegade. Gray is skilled at working in unusual environments, and this one - coming a few days after another show aboard a disused 747 airliner - again galvanised his imagination to produce with a combination of spectacle and practicality. ‘I was immediately attracted to the basic rawness and industrial setting of the rooftop and surrounding architecture,’ explains Gray, which

very much fit the style and aesthetic at the base of his designs for Kasabian. He utilised the steel superstructure of a 20m-wide billboard that’s secured on top of the building. After structural tests, this was used to hang a substantial proportion of the lighting rig. Vertical trusses on floor bases were installed at the back of a stage that was built to the front of the billboard. For moving lights, he specified eight Clay Paky Alpha Beam 300s, that were positioned along the back of the lowest vertical bar of the billboard and six VARI LITE VL 2500 Spots, two of which were on the underside of the back rail of the board, with four on the floor. Six V*L 2500 Washes were also rigged to the back rail, with another two each on the front left- and right-hand corners of the stage. Front lighting is always minimal for the band, which prefers powerful, heavy, moody back lighting and dramatic silhouetting as a visual benchmark. A series of 2-lite Moles were run up the centre of the vertical truss sections, together with 8 Atomic strobes. All lighting equipment and technical production was sourced locally through Mulberry's event producers. Gray was able to blend the contemporary look and feel of the setting with his edgy lighting in a provocative mix of atmosphere, energy and excitement for the show. It was a design evolution based on stark contrasting colours and precise beam work to augment Kasabian's potent, compelling live performances. The show went down a storm with all the VIP guests causing quite a stir around town. However, the New York Police Department were not quite so impressed - asking for the volume to be turned down twice during the band's set!

NES were thrilled to be part of the refurbishment of Atlantic Pavilion; part of the Category 1 listed Albert Docks, the highest profile element of Liverpool’s extensive and historic docklands.

Refurbishment of the 2nd floor office and ground floor reception area included NES illuminating the curved reception desk with 6 LED Lightpanels. Frameless lightboxes were manufactured and installed to the lift shaft wall and the iconic building’s interior archways, using NES’s specialist aluminium hanging system. Each Lightpanel uses 24V LEDs connected to a dimmable transformer. The panels were diffused with opal polycarbonate with stylish black returns; with the overall effect complimenting the historic character of the building.

Sylvania Launches Direct LED replacement for 50W Halogen Flood

Azeta is a new family of technical, dimmable, recessed geared LED downlights offering lumen outputs equivalent to 20 and 35 Watt Metal Halide.
