Brought to you by TL magazine, Total Lighting Guide is a pocket-sized annual update of the latest lighting trends for professionals, featuring new products for the designer, architect and specifier, and highlighting their use in a series of inspirational case studies. Why an annual update? Even the most tech savvy of us sometimes has need for a paper-based system, and while we recognise and applaud the advancements that allow products to be sourced and ordered online, Total Lighting Guide lets you see the products in action, read up on their potential uses and, importantly, get industry feedback from those in the know. For ease of accessibility, Total Lighting Guide has been broken down into user-friendly sections, which include energy efficiency, retail display, control systems, and commercial applications. For 2013, we’ve taken a global approach, sourcing case studies that feature specialist lighting techniques from around the world, such as Bilbao Berria, a restaurant in the famous Gothic quarter of downtown Barcelona, where the lighting brings added zing to the jewel-like colours of the food displays, and my own personal favourite, Scotland’s Iona Museum, where KSLD was tasked with illuminating a collection of ancient stones and grave markers dating back to Medieval times, and beyond. Whether you’re specifying for a private residence, a corporate office headquarters or a city centre flagship store, Total Lighting Guide has got it covered. Gill Anderson | editor

SWITCH ON TO BIG SAVINGS WITH LED LIGHTS
David Ranford took on the challenge at The Pheasant pub in Worcester “With electricity costing £450 per month, despite very favourable unit rates being negotiated, I soon became keen to reduce electricity consumption.” As with most retailers the lighting bills are a huge cost to the business due to the amount of hours they have to be on so the savings that can be made are significant. On average lighting equates to over 20% of the total electricity bill so the 90% reduction in electricity consumption provided by LED bulbs can generate some impressive savings as David found out during his case study.
“As almost all lights are on for over 13 hours per day, I expected significant savings. I then carried out very detailed calculations and was actually surprised to find that savings by replacing just 61 lights with LEDs would be well over £1,000 per year.“ However, the costs that David has calculated in his case study doesn’t actually include the cost savings that will also be made from the reduced maintenance and replacements costs as LED bulbs last over 20 years unlike traditional bulbs. The LED bulb durability will also add further impressive savings for the retailers. “Replacing failing traditional lights is a very common problem, with expensive replacement costs and time consumed refitting in certain enclosed fittings.” One important key consideration to remember is that LED’s are fit for purpose and allow retailers the important function of effectively showcasing their products. With modern technology constantly evolving the various types of LED’s can create flexible and adaptable mood settings to help sell products or make consumers feel comfortable within the retail space which all helps to drive sales. “Having replaced all the 50 watt halogens

On discovering the LED Hut website, I realised that the prices were lower than anywhere else with 4 watt GU10s, I started to look at what other lights I could replace. I realised that all fittings were available including full size bayonet and screw fittings used by traditional light bulbs. I look forward to going 100% LED!” Switching to LED’s:Significantly reduce your monthly electricity bills by £100’s Reduce the costly maintenance / replacement bills of constantly replacing halogens Create a better lit retail environment to help drive sales Help reduce your carbon footprint & be eco-friendly

MEGAMAN
Atlantic Hotel Lübeck, Germany Opened in the spring of 2010, Lübeck’s famous Atlantic Hotel is the epitome of style and comfort for the commercial traveller and tourist
Although situated in the heart of the old town of Lübeck, the building embraces all things modern. Initially lit using halogens, after a year of operation, the hotel decided to replace these high energy lamps with the latest in LED technology from Megaman with stunning, energy efficient results. Alexander Staude, technical manager at the Atlantic Hotel explained further: ‘After a year of operation, the first of the halogen lamps within the high use areas of the hotel, began come to the end of their life. We realised that this was the ideal opportunity to make an investment in LED technology that would very quickly give us significant energy savings. ‘We wanted to have the same warm lighting that the halogens had given us, but not their high energy consumption and short lamp life,’ he added. Working closely with Jens JankePostelt, managing director at lighting specifier, Lightspectrum and electrical contractor, Bodo Wascher, it was recommended that the original MR16 GU5.3 35W halogen lamps throughout the lobby areas, corridors, restaurant
and bar be replaced with Megaman LED 6W GU5.3 12V MR16 2800k reflectors. The family of MR16-compatible LED reflector lamps offer excellent lighting performance, heat dissipation and lumen maintenance, thanks to the company’s patented Thermal Conductive Highway (TCH) technology. Designed for use in standard MR16 applications, the 6W LED MR16 reflector is compact, with a GU5.3-compatible lamp cap and a beam angle of 36 degrees for high quality accent lighting.

‘The 6W LED MR16 reflectors are very energy efficient lamps,’ explained Janke-Postelt. ‘Taking into account the average German electricity rates over the course of a twelvemonth period, it is anticipated that such an installation would result in savings of €20,300 in energy costs, and 109,542kg CO2.’ The end result is not only highly energy efficient, but stunning as well. Alexander Staude concluded: ‘We have had very positive feedback on
the replacement lamps. Their warm colour temperature has meant that they mimic the warmth of the original halogens exactly, yet use significantly less energy. In fact, performance has been so good that we have ordered the next 700 Megaman equivalents to replace the halogen MR16s throughout Hotel Atlantic’s 135 guest rooms.’ CONTACT

VERBATIM
Bilbao Berria Restaurant Barcelona, Spain Bilbao Berria is a popular restaurant in one of the busiest tourist areas of Barcelona, adjacent to the famous Cathedral and Barrio Gótico, the Gothic quarter The restaurant has two floors; the top floor is an informal, inviting setting with a long tapas and pintxos bar. Downstairs, the atmosphere is more intimate, serving Spanish seasonal cuisine. With its rich colours, the food display draws attention, so any change in lighting needed to retain the appeal. After careful consideration, the owner decided to replace the original incandescent and halogen lamps with LED lighting. More than 250 Verbatim LED lamps have been installed in the restaurant, including AR111, Classic A and B, E27, PAR16 and MR16 products. They have been used to light the two dining rooms, the stairs and the bathrooms. The installation proved to be a simple and quick retrofit, taking just a few hours. Jeanine Chrobak-Kando of Verbatim commented: ‘Installing LED lampsin Bilbao Berria has helped to build a
better reputation for the brand among hospitality operators across Spain. Bilbao Berria appreciates the effectiveness and reliability that Verbatim LED lamps deliver, and few things speak as powerfully as a satisfied customer.’ With a large number of fixtures in use for at least 16 hours every day, cutting the lighting bill has helped the restaurant’s owners make significant savings. Switching to energy efficient lighting has also considerably reduced the carbon footprint of the operation. The old lighting raised the ambient temperature in the dining areas, diminishing the quality of the food servery. In contrast, the food now maintains its fresh quality and appearance for longer. The reduction in heat from the lighting also reduces the air conditioning requirement for the restaurant and its associated cost. ‘We are very satisfied with the results of this change,’ said Pedro López, managing director and co-owner of Bilbao Berria. ‘With the savings in electricity and maintenance costs, we calculate the switch will begin to pay off in around four months. MARL INTERNATIONAL
Hoops Basketball Centre Northumberland, UK
A new range of efficient LED floodlighting from Marl International is providing schools, colleges and sports centres with energy savings of 50-80 per cent, improving the ambiance and cutting maintenance costs Hoops realised energy savings of more than 80 per cent after replacing standard SON floodlights with LED floodlights, that are not only more efficient but also better directed onto key areas. At Hoops, Marl fitted eight 30W and two 90W floodlights around the outside of the building, replacing twelve 350W SON fixtures. The new fixtures are much more efficient, and better targeted onto the emergency exit routes rather than the surrounding grass. According to centre
manager, Ian France: ‘The installation gives us an immediate energy saving of over 80 per cent, as well as a reduction in maintenance cost, as the new lights need replacing less often. ‘We’re also impressed with the quality of the lights. The security CCTV images are much improved because the LED floodlights are whiter. We are looking at installing an extra light to illuminate the car park.’ Different colour temperatures and optical configurations can be selected for varying light distances and intensities making the fittings an excellent solution for sports halls and arenas, recreational and public areas, marquees, perimeter fencing, gardens and car parks. Motion and dusk to dawn sensors can be integrated and the instant illumination with no warm-up time required, saves on unnecessary lights-on time. All three floodlights feature robust casing and are fully sealed to IP67 standard for total protection against dust, temporary immersion of water and to safeguard against vandalism, extreme weather conditions and reduce maintenance costs of replacing broken lights. These super-bright floodlights use the latest LED technology with a luminous efficacy of 83.3 to 94.2 lumens/Watt, from a 110V-27V AC supply. A single module 772 Series measures 300 x 93 x 223mm and weighs 2.8kg; the double, 773 Series is 300 x 193 x 253mm and weighs 4.7kg; and the triple module 774 Series is 300 x 293 x 253mm, weighing 6kg. EMERGENCY LIGHTING
Safe as houses Save money and improve safety with the latest emergency lighting technologies and standards Under UK fire safety legislation, commercial, public and industrial buildings must be safe at all times, so virtually all of them need emergency lighting schemes that are fit for purpose in protecting occupants in an emergency. ICEL director, Bernard Pratley reports on how the latest emergency lighting systems bring safety, cost and maintenance advantages One of the most dangerous nondomestic building situations is an emergency, especially fire and when the mains lighting fails. Experience has shown that most people unfamiliar with a building try to leave it the same way they came in, usually ignoring shorter escape routes. It is crucial that they can make their way out quickly through designated escape routes without panic, so emergency lighting and escape route
illumination must make it as easy as possible for those evacuating buildings to see clearly how to safely and quickly make their way out to a place of safety. Conventionally, most emergency lighting systems use fluorescent lamps. However, the latest technologies, such as automated testing and the use of LEDs in emergency luminaires and exit signs provide real choice, plus significant safety, energy saving, time and cost benefits. How do they do this? Emergency lighting choice Following a risk assessment of the premises, which should be carried out by a competent person, the most effective system for the building concerned can then be designed. The two main types of lamp technology used are fluorescent and LED.

Fluorescent lamps: These provide high efficiency with low energy consumption. Be sure that the control gear has been designed for use with low mercury lamps, or the lamp may not strike when required. If it does start, the light output at switch-on may be slower. Insufficient power could result in low light output and possibly a pinkish colour. The emergency operation period may be shorter because of higher circuit watts demanded by the lamp. Modern high efficiency optics combined with greater flux enable wider luminaire spacing; when luminaires are correctly spaced, compliance with BS 5266 applications standards can be met with minimum energy consumption. White light LEDs: These, virtually unbreakable and unaffected by low temperatures, are now suitable for most emergency lighting luminaires and exit signs. Correctly installed, LED emergency lighting luminaires should easily achieve the required 1 lux at the floor on the centre line of the escape route. The benefits include a well-directed bright, uniform light, very long life and
reduced maintenance costs. Compared with fluorescents, good LED emergency lighting often saves up to 30 per cent energy because of the better directed light output. Exceptionally unobtrusive and innovative LED emergency lighting luminaires can be designed, and even integrated into building structures.
Orbik; many people unfamiliar with the building they are in tend to ignore shorter escape routes and leave it the same way they entered it.
Advice on exit signs Whatever type of lighting is used for exit signs, it is not enough merely that they can be seen; each must be quickly understood and quickly and clearly convey their intention and message. For new installations, ICEL (Industry Committee for Emergency Lighting) advises under its Clear Signs campaign, that internally illuminated emergency sign luminaires should be used with the minimum number of formats - almost all escape route scenarios can be clearly indicated with the basic ISO 7010 pictogram signs ‘straight on’, ‘go left’, ‘go right’. When lighting fails, non-internally illuminated signs should be lit by an emergency luminaire to 5 lux vertical illuminance; and in the mains

healthy mode – illuminated by mains luminaires to 100 lux vertical illuminance. However, local and fire authorities can currently require new installations to be of either Signs Directive or ISO formats, so check first. A relatively recent development is that sales of glow-in-the-dark, nonelectrically powered photo-luminescent exit signs have been rising because they seem to be the cheapest solution. ICEL and CELMA have evaluated whether such signs comply with emergency-lighting requirements. Both found that photo-luminescent exit signs will eventually stop working if not properly charged by daylight (which cannot be guaranteed) or another light source, and that they don’t comply with the emergency luminaire Standard, IEC 60598-222, because this was developed for electrical products only. Nor do they comply with the requirements of the UK Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, nor with the colour requirements of EN 1838, nor of ISO 7010, nor of the EU Signs Directive, as the symbols and background colours lie outside the spectrum indicated. Therefore, photo-luminescent exit signs are not an alternative to internally or externally illuminated escape route signs, although they could be used in addition. For peace of mind, use automatic testing
The Fire Safety Order puts the ‘responsible person’ in charge of building fire safety, emergency lighting and escape route illumination. The emergency lighting Code of Practice BS5266: Part 1, and Fire Safety legislation under Section 7, require that ‘responsible persons’ test their emergency lighting systems regularly 30 Total Lighting Guide

and record the results. Manual testing can be lengthy, expensive, disruptive, and difficult to achieve while keeping the building legal and fully working. Also, manual checks are not always fully carried out. If legal requirements are not fully complied with, building occupants may be put at risk and prosecutions can result. The latest automatic test systems (ATS) address this by regularly checking, without human intervention, that emergency lighting batteries, lamps and luminaires are working correctly. ATS - conforming to BS EN 62034 - also provides early notification of failure or performance degradation. Results can be recorded automatically. The result is peace of mind for those tasked with ensuring that their emergency lighting system is fully working and fit for purpose. And finally… It is essential that, for the safety of buildings and occupants, all relevant emergency lighting regulations and standards should be complied with. There are no short cuts - be safe, not sorry, and ensure that your emergency lighting is compliant and fit for purpose. Benchmarking brings confidence. As a leading emergency lighting technical authority, ICEL provides independent third party benchmarking (registration). Where an ICEL member company supplies an emergency lighting luminaire for benchmarking, it means that, on successful completion of the BS EN 60598-2-22 tests, the submitted emergency luminaire, its manufacturer and the manufacturer’s performance claims, have been independently approved and are of the required quality. Benchmarking is not a legal requirement, but provides peace of mind.
ICEL is the emergency lighting operating division of the Lighting Industry Association, and represents approximately 80 per cent of the manufacturers of emergency lighting equipment. Find our more at www.icel.co.uk.

• Building Regulations require that systems comply with BS 5266-1, the emergency lighting Code of Practice. ICEL has published its 1006 document, which should also be consulted to establish the risks that may be encountered in many premises. • European standard EN1838 (the minimum emergency lighting design requirements for workplace applications) will help ensure that minimum emergency lighting levels are met, and that all emergency luminaire and exit signs are correctly placed and fully compliant. • To ensure that the emergency luminaires and exit signs comply in terms of performance and life expectancy, consider products from ICEL registered companies, or companies that have had their products third party tested and approved to EN60598 2 22.

LIGHTING RETAIL DESIRE!

17/09/2013 16:09
The core of the Microlights’ experience is based on exceptional sales consultancy and after-sales service, while developing state-of-the-art products that meet the needs of the retail environment. For 30 years, Microlights have specialised in providing a single point of contact for ‘Personalised Retail Lighting Solutions’. Fast response levels are a critical element of our service delivery and our lead times are usually less than two weeks. For us, our job is to create lighting schemes that help to increase footfall and maximise sales per square metre. Inspiration for retail lighting design was born out of the theatre and clever lighting design delivers subliminal messages including corporate identity to the customer and encourages an increase in basket spend. The art is in creating drama - but just how is this achieved? Lighting colour technology will undoubtedly play its part. Warm white tones are usually used in high end retail outlets whilst a fluorescent cool white colour temperature displays a value brand to its best effect. Areas within store require specific treatments. For example, high shop windows are best cascaded with narrow beam lighting which will hit the merchandise. Merchandise density will
determine the number of fittings which should be installed. Lighting the entrance way should seek to create excitement and always be as close to the angle of vision as possible. Just like a torch, it should lead the eye towards the ideal pedestrian flow around the store. In the same shop there may be a need to highlight a display, or to wallwash wall areas to encourage customers to explore the whole store. For today’s generation of luminaires, LEDs and still situational-relevant conventional light sources not only offer intense levels of light which can be cleverly focused to illuminate the store to best effect but can also make significant savings in energy too. The use of LED means that retailers can now budget for zero maintenance costs for
at least 10 to 15 years trading with just a 10% light drop in that period. Microlights’ manufacturing delivers quality, functional, and technically superior products that conform to all relevant standards. In 2009, Microlights became part of the Aurora Lighting Group. This strategic collaboration has brought about new opportunities, access to new technologies, accelerated product development and expansion into emerging markets including Asia and the Far East. Microlights have sales hubs worldwide all with local and international retail experience. Using our knowledge of the country, its standards, franchise systems and its customs we have 30 years of demonstrated experience in taking clients’ offers into new territories.

HARVEY NICHOLS KUWAIT
Aurora Microlights Middle East has recently provided lighting design, specification and luminaires to Harvey Nichols Kuwait, the outstanding new department store located in Grand Avenue at The Avenues mall in Kuwait City. Working closely with the franchise operator and the designer, the brief was to create a sophisticated, warm lighting scheme with minimum ambient lighting to this stunning 100,000 sq. ft. store. A specific requirement was the use of directional accent lighting which focuses onto the merchandise and offers high quality colour rendering.
In an energy efficient scheme, Microlights supplied low wattage, CMH adjustable accent lighting with track mounted luminaires, LED cove lighting, LED furniture lighting and decorative pendants. EASI Tube 35w CMH Super Mini track accent lights (with a combination of 11 degrees and 18 degrees reflectors) were specified for mid-store lighting and

WANDSWORTH
Melia Hotel Covent Garden, London, UK Guests at five-star hotels expect luxury, so the lighting design and specification must be an integral part of the interior concept, echoing the wow factor of the interior scheme in both style and quality
The luxury five-star ME for Melia Hotel boasts 157 individually-designed rooms and suites, a fitness centre, conferencing facilities, two restaurants, a lounge and a rooftop bar. To reflect the architectural style and deliver a monochromatic interior concept by playing with light and shade, the lighting design is central to the look of the hotel. This attention to detail has been carried though every aspect of the installation, including the wiring accessories, specially commissioned from Wandsworth Group. The emphasis for the switches was on colour and shape. Wandsworth colour matched to different areas, to camouflage them against the walls: each guestroom features a white leather wall facing a black wall. For the bathrooms, chrome plates match the chrome door surround. All of the plates are from Wandsworth’s grid-mounted Series 3 range; screwless fittings that fit flush to the wall. With such an unforgiving scheme, the use of screwless fittings was essential to achieve the required understated look.
In addition to the manual switches, each guest room has a touchscreen ‘Sexy Light Controller’ to enable guests to control the lighting. A series of LED lights fitted at the TV/mini bar unit create a focal point in the room and provide a lighting welcome scene controlled by the hotel’s BMS system and by the in-room controller. This means the colour and level of ambient light changes depending on the time of day; a concept that is mirrored in the hotel’s reception area where the colour and quality of light has also been programmed into the BMS to evolve during the course of a 24-hour period. The Sexy Light Controller can be used to alter the welcome scene lighting as well as to control the lights above the bed, in the bathroom and the down lights in the windows. However, LED feature lighting in the windows used to highlight the hotel externally is controlled only by the hotel’s BMS system, and cannot be dimmed or switched off by guests. Miguel Timoner-Salva, architect at Estel commented: ‘The use of LED lighting for the welcome scenes and feature lighting in the rooms not only

maximises the effects that can be achieved, but also minimises energy consumption and maintenance requirements. The floor-to-ceiling windows in each room form a triangular bay to maximise the natural light during the day time, so it’s in the evening that the lighting installation really has impact.’ The sense of drama created using LED fittings against a monochromatic colour scheme in the bedrooms is echoed in the public areas. The main reception is an atrium that narrows as it rises through ten storeys in a pyramid shape, so the natural light provided by the skylight at the top is modest. This means the ground floor reception area is relatively dark, with some low amp fluorescent lamps to provide ambient lighting and LED scenes that change depending on the time of day. The low light levels and white marble walls provide the perfect canvas for a series of projected images, including geometric shapes, a night sky, water and animals, which vary depending on the time of day. The drama of this white space is contrasted by corridors, featuring black tiled walls and minimalist lighting. In these areas, the only lighting is from spot optic downlights sited above each door and the entrance to each lift. In the restaurant and bar areas, specially commissioned chandeliers have been manufactured by lighting specialist, iGuzzini, their giant white rings appearing to hover above the seating, like flying saucers.
Timoner-Salva added: ‘The contrast between the very dark corridor areas and the bright white fit out and lighting of the ground floor bar could not be greater, and this is echoed in the hotel’s restaurant and rooftop bar. Throughout, the installation is seamless, with the luminaires, lamps and wiring accessories either being picked out as a design feature or being absorbed into the overall scheme.’ CONTACT

ANSORG
Crocs Bristol and Greenhithe, UK For the past 10 years, lifestyle footwear brand, Crocs has been setting fresh and colourful trends in shoe fashion
The company believes that an innovative LED lighting design created and implemented by Ansorg across it’s European stores lends the outlets an attractive ambiance and sets the scene for the brand in an optimum way. The LED lighting creates excellent rendition of the bright and cheerful shoe colours, producing a high shine-effect on the displays. Depending on the architecture and individual store ceiling characteristics, recessed or power-track mounted spotlights are used. The Crocs outlet in Bristol serves as a good example of a recess-mounting concept. Throughout the store, the LED spotlight, Cardo CRL has been utilised, fitted with a 4000 Lumen package. Three different beam angles take account of individual displays, to generate a dynamic atmosphere. Flood reflectors in the peripheral areas ensure wide-area and homogeneous illumination of slatwall displays. Luminaires with a narrower beam, medium-flood reflector are directed at the small goods displays in the middle of the store. In the window area, spot reflectors pick out selected stock highlights. At the Greenhithe outlet, the store and lighting concept has been specifically structured to utilise decorative wooden elements on the walls and suspended from the ceiling, which give the room a distinctive ambiance. The long side wall is evenly illuminated by recessed Cardo CBL LED spotlights, while a power track-mounted spotlight, Tecno TBL accentuates the central displays and the rear wall, and places additional highlights on the side wall. Here the higher luminous flux and narrower beam angle produce an attractive contrast. CONTACT

MICROLIGHTS
World Duty Free Birmingham, UK An LED lighting scheme delivers the promised ROI at flagship duty free store Microlights Versa Flex 1 LED luminaires are performing perfectly after 17,000 hours of continual use in the challenging environment of Birmingham Airport’s duty free. The flagship store underwent a £3m fit-out in 2011. The brief for Microlights’ team was to deliver an
aesthetically attractive, light, bright retail space, which would minimise energy consumption, heat output and maintenance. A foundation grid of 42W Pharos downlights was selected to create effective, uniform ambient lighting in the mid-shop area. The spotlighting of key sales areas and gondola-end displays is achieved through the specification of Versa Flex 1 LED luminaires, using a 2,000 lumen light source. A versatile, gimbal effect offers optimum adjustability for each of the 32W fittings, which have a rated life of 50,000 hours. Along the perimeter of the store, 20W CMH-TC wall washers complement lighting levels in the store. The outcome of this hybrid scheme is a bright, visually interesting retail environment, which fulfils the client’s criteria and has increased customer spend. WDFG’s senior construction and retail development manager, Andy Smith said: ‘Key to persuading WDFG to employ sustainable technology, particularly in the current financial climate, was balancing the cost of investment (i.e. the whole life cost of the products) against the commercial needs of our business. ‘The scheme is a key contributor to the store’s overall concept delivery. The 50,000-hour lamp life of the Versa Flex has significantly reduced our maintenance costs, and is on track to generate combined savings of around £16,000 over a five-year period. ‘While Versa LED acts like a low-glare light source, it highlights products very effectively. The overall scheme creates a retail space that is both comfortable and attractive in which to shop or work.’ ‘The additional benefit of 16 per cent less heat output reduces our air conditioning operational costs.’ CONTACT

AN EYE TO THE
FUTURE Continuous and extensive investment in research and development has ensured Harvard Engineering has remained a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of HID ballasts, LED drivers and control products for the lighting industry for over 20 years Lighting controls are essential, they not only ensure that light levels are kept constant, they allow luminaries to be dimmed or increased appropriate to the activities within a given space. Because lighting controls can also help reduce excess light-output, they can, in addition, allow users to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. In comparison to the indoor market, outdoor lighting applications have recently undergone a radical series of innovations. Integrated control and management systems (CMS’s) are now in place that can connect together luminaries through radio and Wi-Fi. These allow dimming via a web server interface accessible via PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone – offering an unprecedented level of monitoring and control. LeafNut the multi-award winning solution from Harvard has been the inspiration for Harvard’s latest ingenious new product EyeNut. The revolutionary new solution allows retailers, offices, education and healthcare establishments as well as hospitality venues to wirelessly and proactively manage interior lighting.
Committed to manufacturing all its products in the UK, Harvard’s state-ofthe-art facility near Leeds houses one of the best equipped research and development laboratories in the UK. A resource that would be the envy of many silicon valley companies. Building on the company’s expertise and wealth of experience, November 2013 will see the launch of Harvard’s latest market leading product, EyeNut. A new revolutionary wireless control and monitoring system for interior lighting, EyeNut will allow users to completely control lighting, resulting in reducing energy use and cutting carbon emissions. Completely customisable, EyeNut will enable users to create their own lighting groups, control and manage schedules through the Profiling feature, and access a complete view of all lighting points overlaid on an imported image of a building layout in the Mapping tool. LUTRON
Primrose Cottage Surrey, UK
A 16th century property in Surrey has been updated using the wireless capabilities of Lutron’s HomeWorks QS whole home light control solution
The owner of the Grade-II listed cottage wanted to update the lighting technology without compromising the building’s heritage. Limitations in the form of wattle and daub walls, surface mounted wiring, floorboards straight onto soil and a complex layout meant that a wiredin control solution simply wasn’t an option. However, Lutron’s HomeWorks QS system with wireless Clear Connect RF technology meant light sources, keypads, blinds and occupancy sensors could be installed without disturbing the fabric of the building. Max von Barnholt, design director of VBK Lighting Consultants, who oversaw the installation explained: ‘Our brief was to eliminate surface cabling, reduce the number of light switches, automate all of the interior and exterior lighting for ultimate energy savings and scene control as well as enable the whole home to be operated remotely, or on-site via iPad and iPhone apps. ‘When we saw the RF potential of Lutron’s HomeWorks QS solution, we knew that it would be possible to introduce full home light and blind control with minimal disruption to the interior decoration, and no disturbance to the fabric of the building itself.’
The property includes a separate barn conversion that is the owner’s office. To link all areas with minimal wiring, VBK Lighting installed Lutron’s HomeWorks QS processors on each floor. The ground floor processor was wired to one repeater and the other three were connected wirelessly throughout the cottage and barn. Eleven GRAFIK Eye QS wireless keypads were then connected, creating separate control points to wirelessly manage the 66 circuits. In addition, a range of SeeTouch International wired keypads and wireless Pico remote controls were used to enable pre-programmed scenes to be accessed. By using multiple processors, wireless repeaters and keypads where necessary, wiring in the property was kept to a minimum. The initial brief was to eradicate all surface mounted wiring, reduce the number of light switches, automate all of the interior and exterior lighting and include remote iPhone and iPad control. Thanks to the versatile nature of Lutron’s HomeWorks QS solution, all of the surface mounted lighting cabling was removed, and only power cabling was run to the two processors, a repeater and keypads.

The blinds in the barn were controlled using Sivoia QS and linked back to the main system to ensure that the majority of the premises could be switched from one point. To minimise the number of switches, multiple functions were consolidated into the keypads. Wireless occupancy sensors, with ‘auto on/off’ programming were placed into bathrooms and larders. The homeowner can access the system remotely by logging in to a monitor hardwired to the processor. On-site access was also made possible through Lutron’s Home Control+ iPad and iPhone app. Although the majority of the lighting was halogen-based, VBK retro-fitted LEDs to traditional fixtures, and incorporated the control of LED light sources in the underground wine cellar into HomeWorks QS. Built into the
floor the wine cellar is accessed via a glass floor hatch. Once integrated, the exterior lighting is managed via the system’s astronomical time clock. Although aesthetics and quality of life were the motivators behind the installation, energy savings have been achieved thanks to the astronomical time clock, vacation mode and conditional logic programming features. A ‘master-off’ function has been timed to coincide with the family’s departure, ensuring that all lights are off unless overridden during the day. Max von Barnholt concluded: ‘The end result is stunning. Everything has been integrated, giving the user ultimate control of moods and light levels wherever they are.’ CONTACT

CRESTRON
Helsingborg Arena Helsingborg, Sweden Costing in excess of 400m Swedish Krona (ÂŁ40m), the Arena employs a Crestron system to handle both the AV control and lighting systems The installation by Fremlab AB has received much industry attention. A series of six control processors are star networked to the central MP3 processor, which acts as the brain of the project. The subsidiary processors each look after between two and four lighting racks, with the MP3 taking overall control of the onboard astronomical clock and hosting the GUI for the integrated control of lighting and AV sources. With a variety of shared areas, hospitality spaces and gyms, the building controls need to be extremely flexible. With this in mind, the system can be controlled via the Internet with X-Panels, and from Crestron V-Panels. There are an additional three mobile panels available to tap into either the administrative or AV network anywhere onsite. Niklas Olsson drew on his experience in providing lighting controls for the events sector when programming his setup for Helsingborg. With the inevitable movement of people inside the arena, particular challenges are presented for staff when trying to set lighting scenes and maintain both
aesthetic and functional lighting, so the entire system can be controlled from his intuitive, simple programming - if a spectator leaves a light on or a door open, staff can swiftly correct it from their mobile controls. Feedback has been extremely positive for both the end result that guests see, and also for the ease of operation provided by the programming and Crestron interface. Residents of Helsingborg are complementary of the arena as a landmark and have commented positively on the exterior LED lighting effects, which are also managed by Crestron dimmers to keep energy consumption efficient and low. LEGRAND
Tudorvale Bezier London, UK
An £8m penthouse apartment has been specified to inject Mediterranean glamour into London’s residential market Designed by David Gallagher Associates, the duplex features an Arteor control system and wiring accessories range from Legrand. Richard Hayward from Legrand explained: ‘The potential problem with a high-specification lighting and building control system is that too many separate controls and switches can look untidy. By selecting Arteor, Tudorvale was able to put in place a system with the flexibility to tailor the apartment to the end user’s requirements, with matching control units and wiring accessories for aesthetic unity and a very simple to operate user interface.’ A fully automated Legrand intelligent control system was specified for
the lighting, heating, blinds and AV. Designed to blend with the neutral scheme, Arteor sockets, switches and wall-mounted control units provide a cohesive, contemporary look. The custom-designed installation aims to offer the ultimate in comfort for the occupier, with pre-set scenes, touch screen control or manual switching, and controls that can be activated remotely. The apartment has been divided into individually zoned, 5-amp lighting circuits, with low energy downlights in the bathrooms and recessed ceiling lights throughout the remainder. This enables separate control of distinct areas, including five outdoor zones. Lighting and AV is fully integrated on a single control network, to enable the user to match the ambience of the lighting and music, including underwater LED feature lighting in the hot tub. The private access lift lobby offers tailored welcome lighting scenes, while mood lighting throughout is provided by a series of lamps, wall lights and ceiling fittings, many of which have been custom-designed. The control system offers four preset scenes to enable the developer to illustrate Arteor’s capabilities and run a demo sequence for potential buyers, all operated via Arteor touch screens or by any IOS device, either within the apartment or remotely. Jon Thompson from Tudorvale said: ‘The demo scenes have been installed to meet our current needs, but Arteor gives us both flexibility and scalability so, whatever the occupier wants at Penthouse 127, ValeCraft will be able to adapt the system accordingly.’ CONTACT

The Coliseum Theatre London, UK
The London Coliseum Theatre - home to English National Opera and the city base for visiting ballet companies - receives a highly versatile production dimming system The PTB installation uses ADB’s Eurodim Twin Tech modular system that allows each path to be freely switched between a dimmer and a true non-dim under software control. Ten racks, housing 894 3kW and 213 5kW DimSwitch modules, were installed over a five-week period, while performances continued uninterrupted on stage.
‘We’ve been planning this project for a number of years,’ explained ENO’s head of lighting, Kevin Sleep. ‘From the time our existing dimmers, installed less than ten years ago, started flashing randomly during a show, we knew they had to go.’ The Eurodim modules were supplied by White Light, after detailed research by ENO. ‘They seemed to be able to dim anything,’ Sleep noted, ‘and the ability to switch from dimmer to true non-dim was invaluable for us with the moving lights, LED fixtures, HMIs and other sources that appear in our shows.’ PTB was chosen to carry out the installation by ENO, based, as Sleep explained ‘on Nick Ewins of PTB’s clear understanding that this was going to be a difficult project requiring careful planning, plus the ability to adapt to the unexpected as things went along, since the state of the existing wiring was somewhat unknown. That ability to think on the spot turned out to be invaluable as soon as they removed the old racks and discovered cable coming into the dimmer room from completely unexpected directions, with long lengths looped up in piles!’ Ewins added: ‘The changeover was challenging mainly because of the tight timescale. Kevin Sleep knew exactly what he was looking for, and spent a lot of time finding a system that satisfied those requirements. This is the first time we’ve worked with the ADB dimmers, but they’re well designed, were easy to work with and give ENO a very powerful, flexible system.’ CONTACT

OLD TOWN HALL LETCHWORTH Fluorel Lighting has firmly established itself as a leading lighting and luminaire provider for many Local Authorities, Health Sectors and Education markets in North London and the Home Counties in the UK Over the last 35 Years the Company has driven through exciting new trends and has been a stable in the lighting marketplace. Fluorel Lighting strives to be the UK’s most successful manufacturer of Lighting Products to the Construction Industry pioneering itself on quality, service and making an outstanding contribution to educating our customers and saving them money with low energy products and intelligent lighting schemes leading to long-term operating cost reductions. For the Old Town Hall in Letchworth, Fluorel Lighting were sub-contracted to design and manufacture an energy efficient and appropriate lighting scheme for an historic building – fusing old grandeur with the latest technologies. The building and offices were originally the town hall for Letchworth but had been unoccupied for some time when the council relocated. North Herts College took over the premises and wanted to establish their
administration offices in the building. Although the structure and main internal features of the grand old building were sound, the building had fallen into a state of disrepair, with collapsed ceilings, water ingress, damaged walls, floors and decorations. The main contractor, Leary Bros. of Ware, were charged with renovating the interior of the building and appointed MD Electrical of Hertford as their electrical contractors for the project. Working closely with MD Electrical, Fluorel Lighting were chosen to offer a design and manufacturing service that not only provided an aesthetically approved scheme that fulfilled the design criteria for the offices, but offered a very appealing cost and energy efficient solution. This called for constant collaboration with their client and required attending the site to both survey and check installation right through works to final completion of the project. GPO building Sydney, Australia
In Sydney’s central business district, the heritage GPO building is a prominent piece of Australian architectural history, which until now hasn’t been illuminated, due to potential maintenance problems When Point Of View was appointed to create a lighting scheme, the team had a blank canvas. The design scope consisted of lighting the clock tower and facades of Martin Place, George Street and Pitt Street; with the view to providing a low maintenance solution, using discrete LED fixtures. Artemis from acdc was chosen because of its reliability and compact size – and because it can be installed in the most challenging exterior environments due to an IP68 rating. Artemis’ excellent beam control allows the decorative arches of the colonnade to be subtly lit: using light
and shade, the dentals, statues and carvings are revealed in all their glory. This is achieved with a narrow beam grazing the textured stonework. LED light softly washes the upper balconies, highlighting the detailed forms. The LED modules required specific binning to ensure the effect was consistent in colour and colour rendering. All of the company’s LEDs are dual binned within a twostep MacAdam ellipse, so staff were confident that they could deliver, although it took a number of site trials to achieve the desired effect with the final selection tested in a full-scale mock-up. Selecting the appropriate LED luminaries was a challenge for POV, which was assisted by JSB Lighting. Michel Goupy of POV remarked: ‘The ability to work closely with acdc and JSB Lighting has allowed us to achieve the positive results we see today. The meticulous selection process proved to be valuable, resulting in achieving the design intent.’ CONTACT

Iona Abbey Museum Scotland
Kevan Shaw Lighting Design (KSLD) has completed the lighting design, installation and focusing for the latest exhibition at the Iona Abbey Museum The museum, owned and operated by Historic Scotland (HS), houses a unique collection of high stone crosses, grave slabs and grave markers from the Dark Ages through to Medieval times. KSLD had a clear brief to design a lighting scheme that would bring out the texture and carving of the stones, many of which had been badly eroded. Working closely with HS’ interpretation unit and exhibition designers, KSLD was able to ensure that the displays of individual stones and the location of lighting equipment were each best placed to deliver the exhibition lighting qualities required.
KSLD used only LED light sources, as Martin Granese explained: ‘As our first all-LED exhibition lighting scheme, it has been a real challenge to ensure that we get the lighting quality and flexibility demanded by such installations. We have worked hard with the rest of the design team and luminaire manufacturers to ensure that the scheme meets all expectations. There has been a real maturation of LED over the last two to three years, and it’s exciting to be able to be at the forefront of this technology cross over.’ The focal point of the exhibition is a trio of restored high stone crosses (St John’s, St Matthew’s and St Oran’s), that were a result of artistic and theological experimentation particular to Iona. St John’s was one of a number of high crosses used to mark the processional path towards the Abbey, and is one of the earliest examples found in Scotland. When originally positioned in the landscape, the crosses were orientated on a north-south axis, with the form of the cross being revealed differently during morning and afternoon prayers, and the Historic Scotland interpretation unit wanted to address this in the exhibition. So KSLD created a dynamic lighting sequence that plots a sun path; the changing light slowly revealing the carvings on each face of the cross as the angle of incidence and colour temperature simulate sunrise to sunset. The sequence was coordinated with a change in the AV general sound track that provides audial information about the daily rituals of the Abbey’s inhabitants. CONTACT

Scott Safety Skelmersdale, Lancashire
With people depending on Scott Safety products to protect in high risk environments, it was imperative that light output and uniformity were high quality to aid precision working Scott Safety wanted existing T5 fluorescent fittings in its warehouse and factory replaced with an energy saving alternative, plus natural daylight from skylights to be utilised together with intelligent controls, and an enhanced working environment for its staff. MHA’s team designed a bespoke solution using 281 LED luminaires with 23 sensors. This included High Bay TiLite 70 fittings at 82W, including ballasts, TiLite 30/120 (45W) above the shop floor and 46 Oval High Bay 150W fittings in the warehouse. The new fittings have reduced annual lighting energy consumption from 263,907kW/h to 51,730Kw/H. TiLites were chosen to supply 80CRI and 4000 kelvin – a combination that will significantly enhance the working environment, aid precision working and contribute to a feeling of wellbeing
among staff. To make best use of the high quality skylights in the factory area, ambient daylight sensors were installed. PIR sensors were also installed in the warehouse. At current operating hours, the fittings offer a useful lifetime of 16 and 25 years for the shop floor and warehouse respectively. ‘Lighting is a significant part of us achieving our carbon footprint reduction goals,’ said production engineering and facilities manager, Pete Osborne. ‘When we set out on this project, we wanted to find solutions that not only improved light quality but also significantly reduced our energy consumption. MHA Lighting has been able to offer a solution that ticks these boxes. ‘Not only are we seeing real cost savings on our energy bills, but the light colour, output and uniformity is superb and our staff are benefiting from the improved lighting.’ CONTACT

OSRAM
Corinthians Stadium Sao Paulo, Brazil
Televised sports programmes are at the forefront of Corinthians’ bespoke lighting solution
High tech lighting was required for HD broadcasts, so 350 luminaires from Siteco were specified to light the pitch, in combination with Osram HQI-TS high flux metal halide lamps to facilitate brilliant moving images in HD quality. The giant LED panel on the external facade measures 170 x 20m and shows images, scores and video content. 34,000 LED dots supplied by Traxon were installed into glass panels on the facade, making it the largest stadium LED screen. Inside the arena, Osram equipped four additional high-resolution 30 x 7.5m LED screens where the current score, slow-motion replays and interviews are displayed. The pitch lighting in Sao Paulo, at 5,000 Lux, is almost twice as intensive as in most modern stadiums. High-efficiency technologies make it possible to use considerably fewer individual points of light than with conventional lighting technology, resulting in significantly lower energy costs and clearly reduced expenditure on installation and wiring. For the pitch lighting, 352 Siteco R3 Maxi floodlights and Powerstar HQI-TS 2000W high-flux lamps from Osram exceed the highest international light
quality standards regarding luminous intensity by 50 per cent. The benefits include even lighting of the pitch, 5,000 lux luminous intensity that is HDcompatible, and that allows outstanding representation of slow motion replays. It’s a very energy-efficient solution, using fewer luminaires for the same intensity In the parking area, conference rooms, lounges, recreation areas, stairways and corridors, the lighting solutions are optimally adapted to the individual scenario. In the parking garage, T5 fluorescent lamps in combination with moisture-protected luminaires have been fitted, while in the lounges, conference rooms and recreation areas, T5 fluorescent lamps, Powerball Plus HCI-T high intensity discharge lamps with 35/70 watt lamps were specified. The grandstand lighting is divided into two specific areas. The lower tiers, near to the pitch, are illuminated using the pitch floodlights. The upper tiers feature 126 SiCompact A2 Midi luminaires fitted with Powerstar HQI-TS Excellence 250W discharge lamps. CONTACT

THE BELLEVUE HOTEL SWITZERLAND Having fallen in love with the range of designer products offered by Inspired Lighting they were approached by The Bellevue Hotel in Switzerland to provide a solution to create a certain look and feel to a mountain retreat in a stunning location
To help create a particular unique ambience in such a bespoke environment takes a great deal of industry knowledge and professionalism but most importantly a range of products that can satisfy the needs of the project. The Mantra range of products suited this particular specification as a large variety of fittings from a particular design were created to illuminate various locations within the hotel whilst maintaining continuity.. The Eve collection used in this style of project was selected due to the elegance of the range and the unique Anthracite finish that was a perfect compliment
to the interior furnishings. As the range offers over 20 possible fixtures, finding a solution for each location was straightforward for what seemed at the offset to be a complicated project. Whilst design was fundamental, energy efficiency was always a requirement. With the high output LED lamps available from the Luxram range this condition was also easily satisfied giving an overall energy efficiency of 85%. The award winning Crystal LED candle lamp by Luxram was also the only lamp in the market that could be used in the existing chandelier without sacrificing the beauty of the fixture. Every collection that Mantra creates has the ability to offer a comprehensive suite of fittings that are available in various colour finishes starting with a simple wall or floor lamp right through to a spectacular centre piece to help create a truly stunning effect. With such a wide variety of products available from Mantra then it is sure to meet all practical requirements as well as becoming a huge talking point when blended with additional interior decor, be it modern or traditional. HARVARD
Luton Borough Council Luton, Bedfordshire
Through a system of radio-transmitting nodes, LeafNut technology allows streetlamps to be controlled by web server, accessible via a PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone Luton Borough Council (LBC) was looking for an energy saving solution, without upfront costs. Harvard was able to provide this through its Install to Save scheme. One of the first authorities to trial the scheme, LBC will benefit from a 20-year warranty, so if any of the equipment fails, Harvard provides replacement hardware at no cost. In the first tranche, Harvard installed LeafNut across 1,340 lamps in Luton: it is now being rolled out across its 13,674-lamp network. To ensure the warranty of Luton’s luminaries wasn’t voided by the work, LeafNut was installed without disturbing the luminaries as the system comes in a retrofit design without any need for bolts and screws. Aside from the monetary benefits of the scheme, technology comes with its own advantages. Because light levels and performance can be remotely monitored, councils save on periodical maintenance checks, due to an inbuilt reporting process, where failing luminaries send an alert to the system. LeafNut also features UMSUG-approved metering, ensuring the reading will always reflect actual energy consumed. CONTACT

IGUZZINI
Florence Cathedral, Piazza San Giovanni Florence, Italy
A programme of upgrading work has been carried out on the lighting of Florence Cathedral and the beautiful Piazza San Giovanni, thanks to the initiative and support of the Florence Chamber of Commerce iGuzzini provided the best technical solutions to achieve the aims of the designers. The company was selected after some rigorous testing of its product’s performance. The project brought forward several challenges for iGuzzini; the plan included the need for increased lighting levels, more even lighting of the surfaces of the Cathedral, and improved colour rendering - all to be achieved without adding any new installation points. To underline the magnificent facades of the Cathedral, bell tower
and baptistry’s Florentine architecture, Maxiwoody floodlights were selected. While for the squares and pedestrian areas, Delphi wall-mounted luminaires with energy saving lamps were used. The project involved the cooperation of Italy’s Government office, Florence Chamber of Commerce and City Council, Silfi, and Opera del Duomo.

LIGHTING DESIGN
SPECTRAL
Mill Hill Synagogue London The construction of a new community centre to replace a pre-existing facility has been completed at London’s Mill Hill Synagogue The Ner Orre Centre includes a custom chandelier to illuminate the dome at the heart of the main function room, designed by architects at Farrow Silverton. Spectral Lighting’s Ralph Stockham commented: ‘I was approached to see if I could offer a solution to light the domed ceiling, using a fitting that wouldn’t detract or obscure the architect’s design. Entering late in the design process meant that taking a standard product line and applying it to Mill Hill wasn’t practical. At the heart of the system is the characteristic H-shaped profile extrusion, which can be shaped and suspended to any form and length. Once the rack was shaped, LED components were fitted to provide both direct and indirect lighting. These were acrylic Pergament blocks, which create a subtle downlighting effect from 15w SLM LED modules housed in the underside of the track. On the
upward-facing channel, 3w linear LED chips create a gentle up lighting effect for the dome. The LED drivers and heatsinks are housed within the extruded track, maintaining the clean lines of the structure. The result is the contemporary chandelier that presides above the space. It provides the required functional light without dominating the stunning wood panelling, or detracting from the dome above. ‘We originally designed a fixed chandelier to provide a maintenance free installation, but we later decided to add a raise/lower facility to enable cleaning,’ explained David Smart. ‘The original design didn’t allow for the installation of the digital dimming wiring, and could not be changed, therefore, Ralph designed a wire-free product so that everything would work correctly and offer the scene setting and energy saving features of dimmable control.’
