COLLINGWOOD LIGHTING MAKING A SPECIAL DAY BRIGHTER Collingwood Lighting has played a major role in the refurbishment of the Peel Suite at Colshaw Hall in Cheshire. LED fixtures from both the Collingwood and Halers ranges have been used throughout the project, with ambient lighting and decorative effects used to create the perfect setting. Primarily used as a wedding venue, the Peel Suite required a combination of practical and creative lighting. LEDs provided the perfect answer, as they offer the most energy efficient, long-lasting solution. At five metres, the room’s high ceilings dictated high power downlights to deliver the required ambient light. As such, the Halers H6 was specified in neutral white, as it delivered the required light levels with low glare. With a seven year warranty the H6 also offered Colshaw Hall added piece of mind. Supplied to match the wall’s neutral white colour render, the Halers H4 FF was also installed. Bathing the wall and perimeter columns in a soft ‘wall wash’ effect light, the H4 FF was discreetly fitted in the main suite area under the coving, contributing to the overall light levels whilst also providing an added level of interest.

04_05.ad.collingwood.indd 4

Complementing this, 100m of Collingwood’s Self Adhesive Flexible LED Colour Changing strip was also fitted within the decorative cove around the room’s perimeter, washing coloured light up onto the ceiling. The LED strip can be easily programmed and controlled using the DMXC WM01 wall mounted controller, making it possible to light the area in accordance to the chosen colour theme of a wedding or event.

(Electrical Contractors) said: “Due to the nature of the project, it was important to ensure the colour changing effects were precise. As a result, we chose to work with Collingwood due to its proven expertise and high quality lighting designs in this area. By adding a splash of colour to the otherwise neutral lighting, the Peel Suite now looks rather impressive when all lit up.”

For the bar and washrooms, the Halers H2 Pro was ideal - combining high-quality lighting with low energy costs the H2 Pro also offers an IP rating of 65, providing an effective seal against dust and low pressure water jets.

Kieran Pyke, Collingwood Lighting Sales Representative said: “Ensuring a consistent neutral white light throughout the suite was important. We worked closely with GR Bayleys to make this possible, suggesting the most appropriate lighting solutions to fit in with the needs of the impressively renovated Peel Suite.”

Collingwood’s LL090 RGB light was also fitted to the backs of the washrooms cubicles to match the main hall and continue the theme throughout. Richard Bayley, Director of GR Bayleys

In truth, I believe none of us ever stops learning, but a couple of things that had passed me by until now have suddenly come to the forefront of my conscious, making me sit up and take notice. The first is the change to EU regulations (did I just hear a groan?) relating to the transport of dangerous goods (I can hear people now, muttering ‘she’s obviously lost it completely’ - after all, this is Total Lighting, not Road Haulage News - but bear with me). Apparently, a revision to EU regulations back in January has caused a bit of a nightmare for anyone transporting certain types of lamps (the two per cent that emit ionizing radiation to be accurate). As with so many of these changes, the people in charge seem to have an amazing capacity to cock it all up. Government, EU and UN sources are all providing slightly differing information, none of which makes it any easier for lamp manufacturers, importers or distributors to get stocks of lamps to their customers. David Jackson of Suffolk-based MGC Lighting shares the full grisly tale on page 41. My next sharp intake of breath came when I stumbled on a potential crisis facing the stage lighting industry. It appears that tungsten light sources are being gradually phased out in favour of more ecologically sound alternatives by most, if not all of the big manufacturers. While we can – and must – applaud every attempt to reduce the power consumption and associated carbon footprint of our future lighting requirements, there has to be a small voice of reason that asks whether it’s sensible to stop producing something which is vital to an industry, but as yet has no viable alternative? It may not sound like such a big deal, but for anyone who’s ever been touched by a live stage performance; who remembers the magic of their first trip to a Christmas Panto, or who simply applauds and enjoys the stage LD’s art, it IS a big deal – and if tungsten as a light source is lost to stage lighting, some of the magic of every future production will be lost too. With the help of lighting designer, Michael Hulls, TL aims to bring you the full story in the next issue, so keep an eye out in July. Finally, a quick round up of what you can expect this month: it’s June, so that means euroLED is fast approaching. The event, which takes place on 24-25 of the month, is celebrating its tenth anniversary, so if you can spare a day – or two – to visit the ICC, Birmingham, it won’t be time wasted. Don’t miss the essential TL guide (page 56) to who’s going to be there, what you can expect to see, and what the industry is saying about the ubiquitous LED. The technology on show is sure to be the very latest and most exciting – and there’s a bit of a party that’s worth getting togged up for by all accounts. Whatever the month brings, hopefully it’ll include summer. Enjoy!

FORGING AHEAD WITH GROWTH

Research from GfK shows halogen and LED lamps experienced increased share of total volume sales of 63 per cent last winter (October 2012 - January 2013). This is compared to the same period in 2011, where they contributed to a 38 per cent volume share of total sales. The growth in sales can be partially explained by the final phase of the ban of incandescent bulbs, in September 2012. Halogen and LED bulbs have seen increased volume sales, being perceived as the ecofriendly replacement for traditional bulbs. Additionally, the introduction of additional shapes and fittings within have increased their popularity and helped fill the void left by incandescent bulbs. Overall, the market experienced three per cent value sales growth in 2012, while volume sales declined by 19 per cent, when compared to 2011. Looking at traditional incandescent light bulbs, higher volume sales were recorded before the ban (due to its short product lifetime and lower price). Halogen and LED bulbs however, warrant less of a replacement cycle and are comparatively more costly. As a result of this trend, value sales have increased despite the volume decline.

NEWS Showstopper

Revved up Honda motorcycles’ new dealership in Chichester features a large glass frontage, allowing a high level of daylight into the showroom, and with the gloss white ceiling tiles, a minimalist and clean luminaire was needed to complete the designer’s vision for the space. JCC’s Skytile, with its evenly lit optic and high quality LEDs was selected to provide the solution. In addition to meeting the visual aesthetic, the fitting has an LOR of almost 100 per cent, meaning fewer luminaires were needed to achieve the 500-lux average required. Illumination of the motorcycles was the most important factor and the highly controlled light output means it produces great vertical illumination, enabling customers to clearly see intricate detailing on the display models. Additionally, and just as importantly, the constant, accurate colour temperature of the light emitted renders the colours of the paintwork reliably, which was a particularly important consideration in the open workshop area.

Three graduates from the University of Toronto in Ontario have designed NanoLight – a 12watt light bulb that generates over 1600 lumens, equivalent to a 100-watt incandescent lamp. The innovative design uses small LEDs on a folded circuit board to produce a cool-to-touch, environmentally friendly lamp that switches on instantly and plugs in to a regular fitting. The innovative breakthrough has resulted in a flurry of investments on the crowd-funding website, KickStarter, since its launch. The project raised more than $140,000 with more than 3,000 investors in just two months—surpassing their initial goal of $20,000by some distance. With a vision to create a better world through conservation and preservation of the planet, Tom Rodinger, Gimmy Chu and Christian Yan met at UoT while developing a vehicle with the university’s solar car project. Rodinger was a senior member of the team, completing his PhD, while Chu and Yan were third-year electrical and computer engineering students looking for ways to contribute their skills to different projects and start-ups around campus.

A new theatre in Roermond, Holland, has been fitted out entirely with LED fixtures. ECI Cultuurfabriek is a converted former chemical factory, which was abandoned in the 1970s, and has been turned into a space for the whole community to use. Incoming technical manager, Maarten Janssen invested in 30 ETC Source Four Lustr+ and 22 ETC Selador Desire Lustr+ LED luminaires for its 244-seat theatre space, taking advantage of funding made available for environmentally sustainable projects. Janssen explained why he chose the ETC fixtures: ‘I saw the LED demonstrations on ETC’s YouTube video library. The fixtures have incredibly smooth fades, which I’ve never seen in any other LED fixture. And the range of colours is impressive. ‘At the beginning, visiting theatre groups were suspicious of the capabilities of LED. But as soon as they see the power and versatility of these fixtures, they never fail to be impressed. I always discuss with them why the seven-colour LED system is better than any RGB system, and they always leave with a big smile. The Source Four LED fixtures are just magnificent.’

NEW PLAYER? Crestron has announced the release of CLED - its first range of luminaries. Suitable for commercial or domestic projects, the range of LED fittings can be applied to a variety of applications. Crestron’s Integrated by Design philosophy was the driving force when developing a lighting control solution that would reliably control the dimming of LEDs without flickering. To deliver this, Crestron

looked to lighting industry expert, Terry Haynes to develop its first range of luminaires, establishing a product line the manufacturer could oversee, reliably evaluate and adjust in performance. ‘The CLED concept is simple,’ said Haynes. ‘Mains dimming LED has been such a grey area for too long. Under-performing, problematic retrofit solutions have forced the specifier to rely

on unnecessary control methods. Anything from 10-20 years ago the specifier would have confidence in the light source they were working with and the 50mm dichroic halogen lamp was used in abundance. ‘CLEDs give confidence and security back to integrators and specifiers for a hassle-free and less complicated fit-out, producing a real cost-effective solution to the end user.’

SEAT OF LEARNING

Providing the next generation with the best possible environment for education

R

ambling out-dated buildings, miles of corridor, sports halls that have to double as overflow teaching areas – or worse still, exam rooms –still form a substantial part of the UK’s legacy of buildings needed to house our schools, colleges and universities. Happily, more and more purpose-built educational facilities are being designed all the time, but they too, just as much as their Victorian counterparts, need good lighting to help students and teaching staff thrive. And of course, the efficiency – or lack thereof – particularly of the older buildings is an escalating cost that our local authorities simply can’t keep up with. So is there an energy efficient answer to lighting multi-use facilities that provide students with the best ambience in which to learn? ‘A flexible lighting solution is really important so the learning environment can be tailored to the multitude of activities that will take place in that space,’ explained Jeremy Palmer, education business development manager at Philips. ‘With light, you can easily transform

A flexible lighting solution is really important so the learning environment can be tailored to the any space, for example by changing the lighting levels or introducing colour. The flexibility that RGB lighting and controls provide means that it is possible to completely change the use of space.’ Remembering some very long and dreary lectures, I wonder would selecting one light source over another have any impact on stimulation - keeping students alert, headache and eye strain-free, and more able to concentrate for longer periods? Palmer responded: ‘The right ambience can make all the difference. For example, our SchoolVision solution provides a series of different lighting settings – calm, energy, focus, and normal - allowing users to adjust the lighting mood to suit the activity, or respond to typically “low” times of the day. After lunch or late in the afternoon, when energy levels are down, students would benefit from an increase in blue light through the “energy” setting for example. ‘The solution has achieved impressive results in test studies in Europe, with concentration levels increasing significantly and incidents of mistakes being reduced by almost 45 per cent. There is also valuable anecdotal research indicating that students simply enjoy the process of learning more than in conventional classrooms.’ Until recently, LED technology was seen as being too new for the education sector, so Philips undertook what’s believed to be the first project of its kind - to illuminate the Austin Pearce lecture theatre at the University of Guildford in Surrey – proving beyond doubt that it is the way ahead for the sector. ‘This was our first large-scale LED lighting project, and one of the first in the higher education sector,’ explained Dale Meadows, the University’s energy engineer. ‘It attracted a lot of interest from other universities at a time when LED lighting

18

was still widely regarded as unsuitable for general applications. He continued; ‘The Philips LuxSpace fitting has since been successfully used in corridors, toilets, offices and teaching rooms across the campus and is as versatile as it is reliable.’

Cost saving under control The University has made extensive use of LED lighting technology from Philips, which has improved the light quality and delivered a number of energy and lifecycle cost savings. The lecture theatre was originally lit using 159 x 80W halogen lamps, typically burning for eight hours a day. These have been replaced point-for-point, with 159 x 19W LuxSpace luminaires, reducing the installed electrical load from 13kW to just 3kW – an energy saving of more than 70 per cent. Further energy savings result from the reduced heat output of the LED light sources, so that mechanical cooling to offset the heat loads has been reduced by nearly 2,500kWh.The combination of lower installed electrical load and reduced use of chillers is delivering financial savings of nearly £9,000 a year. The University has gone on to upgrade the lighting across the lecture block after the success of the initial installation. Electrical consultant, Simon Davis explained: ‘Upgrading the lighting in the lecture block has delivered significant energy savings with a fast return on investment. In the Griffiths lecture theatre, for example, we replaced ageing T8 fluorescent lighting with a combination of DayZone recessed LED luminaires for general lighting and StyliD downlights for additional accent lighting. The LightMaster controls are configured with a range of pre-set scenes that can be easily selected to suit the activities in the lecture theatre.’

In upgrading its lighting, Guildford feels it has enhanced the campus, creating a more inviting environment for students and staff. Each lighting solution supports learning and social activities in both a practical and perceptual way, while contributing to reduced environmental impact. Lighting performance in the main campus lecture block, for example, has been addressed as part of a phased refurbishment project. Philips’ team worked with lead electrical consultant, Simon Davis to address the requirements of each space very precisely. In the main circulation areas, the emphasis is on creating a stimulating ambience that enhances the vitality of the space and influences the perception of visiting prospective students, so a range of coloured light sources have been installed to create the desired effect. LuxSpace and StyliD fixtures have been used in the Archive Library. ‘As with all of these projects, we wanted to take advantage of the latest technologies in the Archive library,’ explained Davies. ‘Again, LEDs and controls were the obvious way forward. So in the foyer and corridors we’ve

replaced fluorescent lighting with LED luminaires, combined with a control strategy that will minimise energy consumption. Low energy lighting has also been installed in adjacent offices,’ he added. The Studio is an innovative space, occupying part of the original University bookshop and now used by student entrepreneurs. Darren Barnes, Guildford’s project manager, was involved from the start: ‘Because of the concrete slab ceiling, the acoustics in the space are very challenging. It was clear that a standard grid ceiling would not provide the acoustic control required. When we saw the Soundlight Comfort system, it was clear this was exactly what we needed,’ he explained. The system, developed jointly by Philips and acoustic specialist, Ecophon, comprises sound-absorbing acoustic panels with modified PowerBalance luminaires built in. A common factor in the re-lighting projects for the University of Surrey is the high level of collaboration between the design teams. This interaction at the early stage of each project has helped to ensure that design decisions have been made on the basis of the latest lighting technologies available.

Though hoops The sports hall at Abbey Gate College in Cheshire has been transformed by the installation of LED lighting to improve the environment and provide much brighter and more even lighting. Commenting on the installation, the College’s Andrew Bache said: ‘The real appeal of Marl LED lights for us is the convenience and improvement in the environment. Though the sodium lights were adequate for football and gymnastics, the hall is also used for examinations and social events.

‘We were able to dramatically increase the light level in the hall, ensuring the corners as well as the central area is brightly lit. The LED lights are much whiter and very much more even, since the output of the sodium lamps degrades noticeably as they age.’ In addition to improving the appearance, the new lights offered cost savings in several areas, as Bache explained: ‘The sodium lights took about 20 minutes to warm up, so were normally left on all day. Now we can just switch them on when we arrive and off when we leave. ‘Everyone notices the improvement in the hall environment. One of the most visible is the way people no longer appear orange in photographs!’ Marl replaced sixteen SON 250W sodium lamps with thirty-two 145W 774-series Bay Range 3-way floodlights. Following the installation, light levels across the hall have improved considerably, and are much more even. Measured brightness was around 200 lux at one metre from the wall with the old lighting, and is now about 350 lux – a 75 per cent improvement. In the centre of the hall, light levels have gone up by just over 20 per cent from 350- to 450lux. Marl International’s Karl Brooks, who managed the installation confirmed: ‘With the new lighting, the darkest areas of the hall are as brightly lit as the centre was previously, and the centre is even brighter.’ Marl has also installed its new floodlights for outside use - at Hoops Basketball Centre in Barrow-in-Furness. At the Centre, Marl fitted eight 30W and two 90W floodlights around the exterior of the building, replacing twelve 350W SON fixtures. The floodlights are more efficient and better targeted on to emergency exit routes, rather than the surrounding grass. Costs are falling too, according to Centre manager, Ian France: ‘The installation gives us an immediate energy saving of over 80 per cent, as well as a reduction in maintenance cost as the new lights need replacing less often. ‘We’re also impressed with the quality of the lights. The security CCTV images are much improved because the LED floodlights are whiter. We are looking at installing an extra light to illuminate the car park.’

12,000 students are all members of the Students Union, which has a fabulous modern multi-purpose building on the main campus with several performance and event spaces. The Union stages anything from huge dance parties four or five times a year to concerts, comedy shows, exhibitions, trade fairs and conventions. Its equipment is also available for hire to various student groups organising their own events, and so it’s important it’s flexible and very robust. All of the money made staging events is invested back into buying equipment, which is kept updated with the latest and most appropriate technologies. When Robe launched the LEDBeam 100, head of the technical department, Andreas Bengtsson explained that he was immediately struck with both the small size and weight, and the power consumption, which he felt made it ideal for the Union’s various activities. ‘They are so small, fast and mega-bright,’ enthused Bengtsson. The Students Union invested in 12 Robe LEDBeam 100s to add to its existing stock of moving lights, as well as both 40- and 28-degree diffusion filter, which can turn the units into a wash fixture.

Last one out … Changing or upgrading the lighting is only part of the story for buildings where large numbers of students are frequently transferring between classes without a thought for turning off lights as they leave an area. In these days of escalating energy costs, control systems are seen as a must in areas of high occupancy but without an agreed standard for LED drivers, they’ve been left off the designer’s shopping list. One of the key challenges for designers at the moment is dimming LED lights. There is no agreed standard for the design of LED drivers, and so every manufacturer is free to do what they think best. This has made specifying a universal device to control dimmable LED lighting challenging. A number of companies have been working on solutions, including Theben, with its KNX-compatible universal dimming actuator, which leaves designers free to choose lighting from any manufacturer, mixing and matching to build the best solution for each application - the core principle and purpose of the KNX open protocol. The actuators provide step-less dimming using optimised dimming curves included in the KNX ETS configuration software: new dimming curves can be imported via the ETS as they become available. The new dimmer has already been successfully installed in a number of UK sites. For areas where standalone control is required, Helvar has released the 905 Single DALI Subnet Router, which features the company’s Designer software, allowing for advanced control and functional programming. The 905 was created for a variety of applications including meeting rooms, classrooms and lecture theatres. When used with Helvar’s sensors, which have options for absence/presence detection and constant light functionality, the router provides additional energy saving features. ‘The flexibility of the unit makes it suitable for a wide range of applications,’ commented Helvar’s Peter Rowledge. ‘Up to 100 routers can be connected to form an extremely sophisticated network for advanced control. Equally, the same level of control can be applied across a single 905 for isolated rooms in a building.’

School’s out

Jason Ng of Honeywell poses the thorny question: can education afford to miss out on LED lighting ?

G

overnment and local authorities have put pressure on the education sector to deliver more for less for years. With the tough economic climate, diminishing budgets and the UK Government working to hit the country’s ambitious EU2020 target of a 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, the education sector’s burden is being made heavier still. 1 Schools and universities are now being asked to not only review and make changes to their bottom line, but also present how they can achieve energy efficiency objectives and emission reduction goals.

Like many educational facilities, the university was faced with a year-on-year carbon reduction target of five per cent

1. European Commission; Europe in 2020; Targets, April 2011 2. “New HEFCE projects to reduce university carbon emissions” EAUC.org, January 2012

Funding conundrum While education officials may be worried about the financial impact of making changes to become more energy efficient, there are associations and funds that are looking to lessen the potential cost incurred by universities and schools. For example, the Higher Education Funding Council of England announced its Revolving Green Fund would be financing nearly £11m worth of projects at 27 universities, designed to reduce CO2 emissions by 18,500 tonnes per year 2, further aiding education institutions in their quest to reduce carbon emissions and make their campuses energy efficient. While funds are available to aid the education sector in becoming greener, identifying where to make initial changes may seem overwhelming. School and university administrators may go back and forth about where to implement change first, but they need only look up from their desks to find one key solution that could make all the difference – LED lighting.

A lightbulb moment Lighting is one of the most important areas for schools and universities to address. Statistics published in the UK by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (July 2011) show that across a broad selection of non-domestic applications, lighting represents, on average, 21 per cent of a building’s total energy consumption. Adopting LED lighting can deliver decreased energy bills at the same time as reducing emissions and boosting energy efficiency.

While some educational establishments have yet to fully embrace LED lighting benefits, others are setting an example and achieving success. Manchester University is the largest singlesite university in Britain with more than 300 buildings and 50 miles of corridor, and was looking to tackle many of the issues noted above. To identify where to initiate change, the University brought in energy engineer, Damian Oatway, who identified that 55 per cent of the institution’s energy was consumed by lighting. Like many educational facilities, the university was faced with a year-on-year carbon reduction target of five per cent. In order to achieve that goal, University officials made the bold decision to replace existing T12 fluorescent luminaires with Honeywell LED Lighting Battens.

On target reduction Asa direct result of these changes, Manchester is now on target to achieve an energy saving of approximately 20,000 kWh per year, adding up to roughly 8.6 tonnes of carbon, which clearly shows that replacing out-dated lighting fixtures with LED lighting really does pay. Manchester University’s savings success is a lesson to those schools and universities, which are not currently embracing LED lighting, or using it to its full potential. Savings of this magnitude are achievable for a large number of schools and universities. With energy efficiency high on the political agenda, can educational establishments afford to miss out on the benefits LED lighting can bring to their campus?

Chicken or egg? Guy Harding, ILP Fellow and designer, discusses how LEDs are changing the entire concept of exterior lighting Guy Harding is the lighting development manager at Woodhouse. He is responsible for all lighting design and product development and acts as a lighting consultant within the Marshalls Group. After graduating in 1985 from Brunel University and gaining postgraduate experience, Harding has spent 22 years within the industry, heading up new product development for a multi-national lighting company and also designing lighting and motorway communications for an engineering consultancy. A Fellow of the Institution of Lighting Professionals, he sits on the Membership Committee at the ILP where he is an Engineering Council-approved assessor. He is a PTLLS-qualified lecturer on the ILP exterior lighting diploma. Harding believes that the exterior lighting market is changing rapidly and LEDs are a huge driving factor behind this change. Clearly, discharge lighting still has its place, but with on-going LED development, it is only a matter of time before discharge lighting will become obsolete. This is made clear by manufacturers reducing their ongoing development programmes to only the most efficient white light sources. But as with all leading-edge technologies, choosing a moment to release a static product offering is troublesome. Here, he explores how lighting professionals can ensure their end-product is as dynamic as the cutting-edge LED manufacturers’ output.

26

The LED early adoption dilemma Specify an LED for a project today and in six months’ time that particular specification will have been superseded by another, even more efficient source. This means all of the complex calculations on efficiencies and savings can also be rendered useless and the seemingly endless search for the ‘best’ product in a saturated market starts all over again. As LED manufacturers are keen to promote their latest and most efficient products, securing a supply of the older variants can be difficult, as production has often ceased. When developing a new LED-based luminaire, designers are faced with a fundamental quandary: rush in too early and design a luminaire around an inefficient and quickly obsolete LED, or wait and get left behind in the market.

The first-to-market mistakes Many companies experimented with fitting LEDs into existing luminaires originally designed for discharge lamps, using LEDs for LED’s sake. This is not ideal, as LEDs are a fundamentally different type of light source, emitting light only in one hemisphere and requiring heat to be conducted away, in the other. To use LEDs effectively, the whole concept of a luminaire needs to change, and our industry is only just starting to address this.

Re-think the concept to meet the pace of the market Development costs are high, and careful, considered design is the way forward, not just the selection of LEDs. To create a truly

low-maintenance luminaire, the selection of the power supplies and ancillary components is of prime importance. In addition, the question of future upgrading or replacement of LEDs within the luminaire also needs to be considered. Having easily refit-able LED modules is the way forward, but poses the question of whether just the LEDs are replaced, or the whole sealed optic module? The former is unlikely to be done reliably ensuring perfect resealing of the module on site. Therefore having a combined LED and optic module that can be easily factory refitted may seem the logical step.

How can we adopt the modular approach? An industry-wide working group, Zhaga, is starting to address the modularity approach, and has already laid down standards for some LED modules, mainly based on interior down-lights. It is also looking at flat LED modules for exterior lighting, but this work is at an earlier stage. All of these factors lead to the fact that the industry needs some clever and prudent engineering to produce initially affordable LED luminaires that show efficiencies from day one of installation, without elongated payback periods when compared to traditional luminaires. Watch this space; this watershed moment may just be around the corner!

SUSTAINABLE LIVING

The Code for Sustainable Homes measures the whole home as a complete package, assessing its sustainability against nine categories:

Lighting Potton’s energy efficient self-build home for the future

• energy/carbon • dioxide • water

is the UK’s first self-build show home to exceed the requirements for Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes - the national standard launched by the Government in 2006, which requires an energy efficiency level of 44 per cent. Scolmore was selected by contractor, EBS Ltd, to supply the lighting solutions throughout the property. The contractor, John Waters of EBS commented: ‘Of all the electrical suppliers out there, Scolmore was able to supply the widest range of lighting and wiring accessory products, and in many cases we were able to opt for matching ranges. The fact that they offer an unrivalled collection of low energy LED lighting was the icing on the cake.’ Flameguard LED downlights have been installed in the hall, lounge, kitchen/dining room, study, TV room, utility and WC on the ground floor, as well as in the four bedrooms, two ensuite bathrooms plus the family bathroom. The system is designed to effectively restore the fire integrity of ceilings, and at the same time provide an acoustic barrier. Additionally, switches and sockets were selected from Scolmore’s wiring accessories collection. Each room features a different range in order to demonstrate the breadth of product choice on offer.

THE WICKHAMBROOK

A striking effect has been created in the kitchen with hree aluminium pendant fittings from the OVIA collection, which hang low over the central island. For the exterior, 12 Fumagalli LED bulkheads have been installed, providing a modern, low energy solution in keeping with the building style. The bulkheads consume just 11 watts and have an IP66 weatherproof rating. The Potton show barn offered potential homebuyers the opportunity to follow the project over a period of eight months. Normally it would take 12 weeks to complete the build, but it was slowed to cater for a series of open days. During this time, visitors were able to watch the build take place and see the design features and materials required to make it 44 per cent more energy efficient than a standard built home. Terry Mahoney of Kingspan Potton commented: ‘You don’t normally get to see the process behind the building of a show home; you just see the finished property. Over the course of eight months, we have run a series of open days, which provided sessions to over 500 visitors who were able to see the installation of the latest products and material used to meet Code Level 4 rating. Scolmore’s LED lighting products have enabled us to meet our energy efficiency targets with stylish, quality products that are in keeping with the ultra modern feel of this unique build.’

It sets minimum standards for energy and water use at each level, which provides valuable information to homebuyers, and offers builders a tool with which to differentiate themselves in sustainability terms.

Super Trend will continue the plant. ‘The sale marks a further milestone in the realignment of the company,’ said Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of Osram. ‘LED is the future of the lighting market, where we are already a leader today. Our focus is on profitable growth, and we plan to further increase the share of LED-based revenue of our overall business.’ The sale forms part of the corporate program to save one billion euros by 2015, as already disclosed. With the sale of the Shaoxing site, Osram has already executed more than half of the reduction of 8,000 jobs in its traditional lighting business, planned by 2014. ‘Our corporate reorganisation is progressing well and by that, we are making Osram fit for the challenges of the digital lighting world,’ said Peter Laier, CTO of Osram.

Expansion planning Muscat’s new international airport terminal, due for completion by 2014, will be lit by Oldham Lighting. The Surrey-based manufacturer and installer has been awarded the contract to supply and fit 50,000m of cold cathode lighting for the terminal’s internal and external areas, which includes the new piers, passenger terminal, control tower and civil aviation buildings. Oldham is also installing more than 5,000m of linear LED lighting as part of the £3m contract. The airport is currently one of the largest civil engineering projects in the Middle East – a region Oldham Lighting has strong links to and an excellent reputation in over the past decade. Scheduled for completion in 2014, the project will expand the former Seeb Airport, opened in 1973, to two terminals. Chris Richardson, managing director of Oldham Lighting, has been working on the project for the past year. He explained: ‘This is the largest cold cathode order we have ever worked on, and this is in conjunction with our distributor in Oman – Zubair Electric LLC. When we were approached to handle the lighting, it was based on our experience and knowledge of large projects in the region. ‘At the end of 2012 we moved to a new manufacturing base in Surrey to handle this and other projects in the Middle East. This is not the first large scale project we have handled in the United Arab Emirates, and with our local connections and a strong distributor, we expect to have the contract finished to a high standard and on time.’

Joining forces GlassGuard, the manufacturer of industry-compliant fragment retention lamps, has joined Germany’s electrical industry portal, Voltimum Germany as a manufacturing partner. ‘Lighting architects are increasingly specifying fragment retention lamps in accordance with IEC 61549,’ explained Jörg Wüllner, CEO of Voltimum Germany. ‘Through the new partnership with GlassGuard, Voltimum will be able to report regularly about fresh developments in the lighting market’. YOU CALLED? Lighting maintenance service provider, Quicklight continues to buck the downward economic trend by announcing its now ranked as the sixth fastest growing company in the UK lighting industry, in terms of sales growth. Total sales for the company increased by 76 per cent in its last financial year. Quicklight has designed its proactive lighting maintenance service specifically for busy facilities managers, sending

qualified engineers to its customers’ UK sites every eight weeks to change any lamps or fittings that have failed. ‘Facilities managers are under increasing pressure to justify their budgets, and we offer a service that is totally transparent,’ said Rob Moss, managing director. ‘We know that customers don’t want to sign up to multiyear maintenance contracts anymore, and we’ve pioneered

a business model that approaches the market in an entirely different way, having adapted our offering to suit our customers’ needs. ‘Another reason we’ve been so successful is that we don’t automatically relamp buildings when we first start working with our customers,’ he added. ‘Our general philosophy is to reduce wastage, so we don’t replace lamps unnecessarily if they are in working order.’

NEWS Warm welcome Technical Consumer Products (TCP) has relocated its European headquarters from the Netherlands to Corby, and promoted Thomas Luecke to the position of President and CEO of the company’s EMEA division. Luecke, who previously headed up TCP’s UK organisation, has taken a lead role in the company’s growth in the UK and Europe since joining from Philips Lighting in 2010. The new headquarters is the result of a £1m restructuring programme as the company looks to capitalise on its growth in the UK and build on its European presence. TCP has also expanded its Paris office and is planning to open a new office in Germany later this year. The company, which started its UK operation in Northampton in 2010, has seen big UK demand for its LED and energy efficient lighting. Winning major retail customers, such as Homebase, TCP achieved a £10m turnover during its first year of operation in the UK, and is on target to achieve sales of £25m by the end of 2013. Luecke commented: ‘Corby has great links to road and rail for both logistics and customer visits, and will give us the room to expand and provide an even better service to our customers right across the EMEA region. ‘With sales of our LED lighting being particularly strong in the UK, relocating our headquarters to the UK means that we are now much closer to our major retail and professional lighting customers, and with expansion in France and Germany, we are well on schedule to meet our ambitious targets in the coming years.’ The privately owned company distributes across five continents and exclusively supplies Homebase in the UK. Welcoming the news, Corby Borough Council leader, Tom Beattie, said: ‘In the current climate it is very encouraging to see companies such as TCP choose Corby as the place to expand their business. Bringing skills and jobs in to the borough is a major priority for Corby, and a vital part of our long-term ambitions.’

POSH SHOPS Footfall, displays and customer satisfaction can all be improved with good in-store lighting ould you buy a three grand suit from a store that was so poorly lit that you couldn’t be sure if it was black or navy? Of course you wouldn’t – and neither would you be tempted to venture into a cave-like den of gloom to search out a luxury wallet or handmade shoes. You only have to look at the highend stores gracing our cities to spot the difference between them and their lightingdesign-free counterparts: not for these bastions of good taste rows of cold, flickering fluorescent tubes housed higgledy-piggledy in barn-style ceilings with one in ever four having long since given up the ghost. The discerning customer expects more, and more is exactly what they get with stores such as fashion house, Burberry. The retailer has chosen EcoSense Lighting for three of its European outlets, calling on specialist lighting solutions provider, Architainment to supply best-in-class LED fixtures. Architainment worked closely with lighting design consultancy, Office of Light to help transform its Knightsbridge and Regent Street stores, and a third in Italy’s fashion capital, Milan. Office of Light was approached to create a lighting scheme that would

reflect the contrasts of heritage and tradition with innovation and technology – characteristics central to Burberry’s brand identity. Two fixtures from EcoSense were selected to light details in each location. For Burberry’s flagship Regent Street store, Architainment supplied around 2000ft of EcoSpec Linear INT and EcoSpec Linear HP INT, in 120°x120° and 60°x120° beam angles respectively. The building features sweeping staircases, romantic balconies and hidden corners, and in order to complement its architecture, high quality energy efficient lighting was needed to create a space where modern and traditional collide. The fixtures were recessed within the cornicing and coving, immersing the spaces in white light. Directly connected to mains power, with no external drivers or complicated wiring to consider, installation was easily accomplished, with each plug-and-play unit being simply connected, end-to-end. Following the success of the initial project, Architainment went on to supply another 1000ft of EcoSpec Linear INT for Knightsbridge and Milan. All three used one-foot and four-foot lengths, in 3000K colour temperature. EcoSense employs a stringent LED binning process, which results in minimal visible variation of colour and a two-step MacAdam Ellipse uniformity from fixture to

fixture. This particularly appealed to Office of Light for the high-end retail environment. Associate lighting designer, Mihaly Bartha, commented on the project: ‘The quality and consistency of the EcoSense Lighting fixtures proved a perfect fit for all three of the stores, helping to achieve our creative vision for Burberry.’

Added sparkle Another British icon of the high street, John Lewis has gone all out to provide that added touch of sparkle to the shopping experience with the introduction of a series of new departments in its stores across the UK, and Kolarz has been commissioned to supply specially designed feature lighting for the new fine jewellery, fashion advice, and lingerie departments. To help draw attention to the new areas, a series of hanging fittings were created, each featuring more than 8000 sparkling Kolarz crystals. Two hundred LEDs provide the required element of drama combined with low maintenance and energy efficiency. The company’s flagship Oxford Street store features two double-frame designs at varying heights, creating shimmering reflections, movement and illusion effects. For the lingerie and fashion advice departments, a contemporary style fitting has been incorporated to create warm, sensual mood lighting, which brings out the full beauty of the products on display. Organza shades with suspended Kolarz crystals, which appear to float beneath them, present understated decoration and style. The majority of retail lighting installations are refurbishments of existing stores. However, in Zürich, an industrial site redevelopment has become home to a Sei Unica outlet. Wolfgang Kucher, designer and architect for Sei Unica AG, explained: ‘The Sei Unica boutique is part of the prestigious CONNECT project in Alstetten. A former packaging plant, the site has been developed based on the vision of combining work, living, sports, leisure and cultural facilities in one place. It centres around a restaurant and retail zone on the ground floor piazza, and the whole complex has been built to the Swiss MINERGIE sustainability standard*. We wanted to support the ethos of MINERGIE within Sei Unica, and with this in mind, carefully researched the best lighting technology for use within the store that would support a high-quality look and feel, but be as energy efficient as possible.’ The result is a dramatic use of space lit using the latest Megaman LED lamp technology, to create a boutique store that not only looks stylish and sophisticated, but is saving almost 2,500 a year in energy costs.

Compared to halogen and HID, LED lighting is a much newer technology, and we are still in a learning process when it comes to making the most of it

The design concept behind Sei Unica was for an exclusive, quietly sophisticated space, which displayed the carefully created range of handmade, off the peg and haute couture clothing. It also needed to have a versatile interior, so that the catwalk, which is built into the floor, could become the focal point when required. Working closely with Jean-Luc Mösch, from M.Schönenberger, the possibility of using LED lamp technology within the boutique was explored. Apart from its energy saving potential, LED technology was of interest because of its reduced heat output and ability to be positioned close to displays. Kucher chose to use Megaman’s LED AR111 GU10, 10W and 15W, along with LED Candle 5W light sources to create the right balance of drama and exclusivity, while reducing heat and energy consumption. As well as lighting a mix of central mobile display pods, Kucher wanted customers eyes drawn to the impressive showcases sited along the walls. One of the main challenges was obtaining the correct balance of light within these tall showcases. As Mösch explained: ‘Compared to halogen and HID, LED lighting is a much newer technology, and we are still in a learning process when it comes to making the most of it. Unlike halogen lamps, which produce a yellowish light, the LED light sources required slightly more experimentation to get the correct effect under daylight conditions, due to their more neutral white light. ‘However, the end result was well worth the learning curve, as not only does the neutral-white light show the creations in their accurate colours, but we have been able to position the lamps close to the exhibited dresses for maximum impact – something that would have been impossible to achieve with halogen sources.’ When it comes to lighting fashion, colour rendition is all-important. Megaman’s Fred Bass explained: ‘Colour rendition is absolutely essential in creating a moodenhancing atmosphere in retail spaces; the colour of the goods on display should to be taken into consideration when choosing light sources. This of course goes for all goods, whether groceries or fashion. To give an example, Megaman’s LED R9 series is strong in red colour rendition, whereas the Mellotone lamp emits warmer, more yellow tones. An additional advantage over halogen light sources is that LED lamps don’t radiate any UV or IR light, or residual glare that can have damaging effects on products such as clothing and books. ‘With a designer who works collaboratively with a fashion brand to understand what must be achieved in the retail space, and who understands the right light sources and their effects on clothing (both when enhancing a garment with light and any effect a light source might have on material), then colour rendition in fashion retailing shouldn’t be an issue. It’s all about understanding, creativity, and access to the right light sources.

Reflected luxury Discussing a prestigious project in the Far East, Bass said: ‘One of our most recent and most exciting projects has been Central Central in Hong Kong. It’s a brand new designer shopping centre in the heart of Hong Kong’s financial and commercial district, that houses brands like Karen Millen and Nine West. We worked with lighting designer, Tino Kwan, to install LED reflector technology throughout the retail space, and the result is a stunning white shopping canvas with visual lighting drama and energy savings of 105,090 kWh and 73,563 kg in CO2 emissions per year.

The design of each of the stores aims to offer the maximum flexibility for merchandising, and the lighting technology used throughout has been chosen with visual impact, customer comfort and energy efficiency in mind Above from left to right: Wired pop up shop; Unica; John Lewis

‘The design of each of the stores aims to offer the maximum flexibility for merchandising, and the lighting technology used throughout has been chosen with visual impact, customer comfort and energy efficiency in mind.’ No less glamorous, but a very different concept to fashion retailing, Jones the Grocer’s flagship Sydney emporium of all things edible, has been treated to lighting design by POV. The gourmet food outlet is a hard-to-resist space where visitors can experience breakfast-to-dinner dining, alongside the retailing of luxury foods. POV’s Mark Elliott and Fransiska Laksmon used lighting to bring to life each area and its specific function, so that every experience was enhanced to its full potential. ‘Drawing on our experience, we used techniques specific to different sectors, to bring out the qualities of each area,’ explained Laksmon. In the retail area, POV conceptualised custom steel pendants in the shape of diamonds, which are used to define the area, along with integrated shelf lighting, which adds focus and glamour to the products on display. In the café space, suspended rectangular black (powder coated) frames are hung with spotlights to throw accent lighting onto each of the silver topped café tables below. This, along with the pale concrete floor, adds to the reflected light levels, giving the café an open and friendly ambiance. The main feature in the dining area is a heritage sandstone wall, which is strongly lit during daylight hours to draw focus through the restaurant from front to back. White concealed spotlights focus elegant pools of light on the dark floor and tables. The lower light levels help to create a more intimate ambiance for the dining area. POV has provided design strategist, Landini Associates with advice lighting projects in the past, but Jones The Grocer is the first full collaboration between them. ‘Landini say they now realise the value that a lighting designer brings to a project,’ enthused Mark Elliott. ‘It’s a great pleasure to play our part in the forward thinking design of Jones the Grocer.’ Of course not all stores are permanent fixtures on our city streets. The advent of the pop-up shop means that many otherwise empty retail outlets are given a new - albeit

temporary - lease of life, and often by a luxury brand that wants to boost it’s presence in the marketplace. New Yorkbased lighting designer, James Bedell recently specified 100 Chroma-Q Color Force Compact fixtures for the interior of a 10,000sq ft temporary pop-up store in Times Square. Bedell is extremely passionate about sustainability and strives to incorporate eco-friendly technologies in all areas of commercial and entertainment lighting. When he was commissioned by MKG as consultant and lighting designer for the Wired Holiday pop up store with a brief to make the space look and feel ‘icy blue’, he decided that RGBA colour changing LED sources would be the best primary light source to interpret the client’s wishes – an unconventional choice for illuminating products such as clothing, games and gadgets. ‘There was some creative risk involved,’ explained Bedell, ‘but Wired is a very progressive, future-thinking company, so it was also highly appropriate. I enjoyed thinking out-ofthe-box with LEDs, and once I had chosen the fixtures, I was confident that it would work out really well.’ Bedell regularly specifies LED solutions for his projects; however, this was the first time he’d used the Color Force Compact fixtures. ‘Their high CRI (92) and colour quality really impressed me, so I knew they would be ideal for the job,’ he said. The fixtures were positioned across the store, attached to a series of trusses rigged from the existing roof beams. They brought a level of industrial chic to the space, illuminating all the areas smoothly and efficiently with a punchy 1700 lumen output. Soon after completing the lighting scheme, Bedell was invited by the Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) to give a presentation at New York University’s Loewe Theatre, where he stressed the advantages of using LEDs in this context energy saving, low maintenance, minimal running costs and an excellent quality of light output. ‘Sustainability is a key issue in both architectural and entertainment lighting, and LDs need to promote it and think seriously about reducing power consumption,’ he commented afterwards, adding that he believes the line between retail, commercial and industrial disciplines, and show and event lighting will become increasingly blurred into a widening ‘architainment’ sector – to the benefit of both.

Dangerously

dysfunctional Does the lighting industry need regulatory change on the transport of dangerous goods?

I David Jackson, international sales director at MGC Lighting

t is no surprise that the transportation of dangerous goods, such as explosives, flammable liquids and toxic, infectious or corrosive substances is subject to heavy international regulation, but did you know that the same legislation also applies to around two per cent of lamps sold in the UK? David Jackson, international sales director at MGC Lighting, an international lighting distributor, provides an overview of the regulations and highlights some of the issues faced by the lighting industry since they came into force. ‘The carriage of dangerous goods by road, rail, inland waterway, sea and air is regulated internationally by a range of European agreements, directives and regulations, as well as parallel legislation in the UK. The regulations, which are strictly policed, govern classification, packaging, labeling, transportation and certification in relation to different modes of transport. ‘These regulations, which originally came into force in January 1968, were revised in January of this year to make the requirements more accessible and user-friendly, so they could be more easily applied to international road transport and domestic traffic in all European states. This was deemed necessary in order to promote a more consistent regulatory framework at a European level.’

So how do the regulations apply to lighting? ‘A very small percentage of lamps – around two per cent of those sold - which are used in professional and industrial applications, emit ionizing radiation, which despite very low levels of radiation, now classifies them as potentially dangerous under the recently amended regulations. ‘Although these products are safe to use and do not pose a risk to health or the environment, even in bulk, they fall within the dangerous goods category because they emit radioactivity from Thorium, Krypton-85 and Tritium. ‘As a result, any consignments of lamps having less than 10,000 Becquerel (Bq), which is the unit radioactivity is measured in, is transported as an excepted package and, as such, is subject to strict regulation concerning packaging, labeling and shipment. ‘To put this level of radiation into perspective, the average adult body registers 7,000Bq and a household smoke detector (containing Americium) registers at 30,000Bq. ‘If you are involved in the processing, packaging or transportation of these lamps, you need to understand how and why the regulations affect you.’

How has this impacted on the lighting industry? ‘The main impact on the lighting industry is a significant increase in costs for the packaging and transportation of the affected lamps. The regulations dictate that both

inner and outer packaging must be designed and constructed to UN specification standards and must pass practical transport-related tests, such as being dropped, held in a stack and subjected to pressure demands. It must also meet the needs of the substance it is to contain and must be certified by a national competent authority. ‘UN approved packaging is marked with the prefix “UN”, which is followed by codes that are listed in the relevant regulations, relating to the national and international carriage of dangerous goods by road, rail, air or sea – for lamps this is UN2911 for transport by road, rail or sea and UN2911 or UN2809 for air transport. ‘In addition to very specific labeling and packaging requirements, shipment of the affected lamps is also restricted to a maximum level of Becquerels per carton. ‘In addition to operational challenges, the regulations have forced a number of logistical challenges too. At present there is only one carrier in the UK licensed to carry these goods on a courier road network. Subsequently, approval for shipment through this carrier takes between six and eight weeks with approval only applying to mainland UK. ‘Internationally, these lamps can only be moved through licensed forwarders by road, air or sea freight, which incurs significant additional transportation costs and longer lead times. Companies are no longer able to offer door-to-door deliveries, and are not able to use international courier services, as they will not accept radioactive material, at any level, in their networks. ‘An additional knock-on effect for the lighting industry also exists as freight companies which handle dangerous goods need to provide staff with appropriate training, which comes at a significant cost. ‘Such restrictions imposed by these regulations are making it even harder for lighting businesses to make a profit in what are already challenging economic times, as operational costs have increased significantly as a result. ‘To add to the problem, not all countries have signed up to the agreement, and some have actively closed their borders to the transportation of any dangerous

Internationally, these lamps can only be moved through licensed forwarders by road, air or sea freight, which incurs significant additional transportation costs

goods – even those classified as excepted products. ‘One such country is France, which has forced forwarding companies to use routes that bypass French airspace and roads. As the vast majority of international road freight goes by ferry to Calais and a large percentage of flights from the UK cross into French airspace, this has created an almost impossible challenge for UK companies who trade internationally. ‘Another smaller, but not insignificant issue is the need to explain to customers why a hazard label has suddenly appeared on goods supplied, which then also involves the need for plenty of reassurances that the goods are safe to handle.’

What changes to regulations is the industry calling for? ‘Whilst the lighting industry supports the regulation of transport of products and substances that do pose significant potential risk to both people and the environment, it does not believe that the affected lamps should be governed by the same legislation, as they represent an almost imperceptible risk – after all, the lamps have less Bq than the adult human body does naturally! ‘As there has never been an incident or accident involving these lamps, the best way forward would be for the lamps to be reclassified, and the limit level of the relevant radioactive materials raised. If the level is set at a high enough level, it would be possible to ship the lamps without any restrictions, thereby removing the logistical and financial nightmare of restrictive transportation. ‘The other, far less likely option would be for the lamp manufacturers to stop using radioactive materials in the manufacture of these products.’

What does the future hold? ‘Whatever action takes place, the confusion surrounding the regulation needs to be removed. ‘Companies need more direct access to clear information regarding which products are affected, which countries have closed their borders to these products and also, which regulations they should follow – air, road, rail or sea – as each mode of transport is governed by a different code imposing different restrictions. For example, if you sell lamps to a company in Northern Ireland, which will travel by road to Holyhead and then go by ferry to Northern Ireland, which regulatory code do you follow – road or sea? ‘There even appears to be confusion within Government bodies, the EU and the UN itself, about the classification of these products, with conflicting information as to why products with such low Bq levels need Dangerous Goods classification. ‘Clarification is essential, as is close consideration of the need to classify such low risk products. As an island nation, we rely heavily on our ability to transport goods internationally, as well as domestically. Unnecessary restrictions bind us rather than free us in our attempts to increase national and international trade.’

TRAVELLING LIGHT The iconic Paddington Station has had a bit of a facelift, and now benefits from a restored glazed roof and energy efficient lighting for better lux levels night and day The fourth span of London’s Paddington Station, which was originally planned to be demolished, underwent an extensive improvement after Save Britain’s Heritage successfully campaigned for its preservation. The station is one of the main London termini for the capital and the fourth span was added in 1916, as an extension to the original building, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The site has a strong historical significance as part of the Great Western Railway, and has been serving the capital as a major station since 1838. The station was substantially enlarged between 1906 and 1915 when the fourth span was added.

New LED lighting technology has allowed the company to completely change the way in which it designs the lighting schemes for modern architecture New LED lighting technology has allowed the company to completely change the way in which it designs the lighting schemes for modern architecture. That, combined with the mounting height and restricted access where the luminaires were to be placed, led iGuzzini to suggest the Woody LED as a solution, using warm white LEDs to enhance the colour of the ceiling panels. This suggestion produced an improvement to the overall lighting as well as sympathetically highlighting the rib structure and ceiling details. Work on the restoration project has now been completed, and the restored roof unveiled. The LED fixtures that have been installed have a rated life of 50,000 hours, which equates to more than 13 years’ use if the lighting is switched on for an average of 10 hours every night of the year.

The site has recently been sympathetically renovated, which involved repairs and restoration of the original Edwardian glazed roof, so that travellers using platforms 9 to 12 can once more enjoy daylight. However, natural light is only part of the story. Working together with Oxford architect, WSP, Morgan Sindall and GIA Equation, iGuzzini’s design brief was to provide a high output and efficient light source for the restored area. Traditionally, floodlighting such structures would have involved the use of high intensity discharge (HID) projectors located on the façade with unsightly fixing systems. These traditional methods consume high levels of energy, and also require regular maintenance schedules - something that is not easily achievable when trying to access luminaires mounted high up on the structure.

DANLERS Extend ‘Intelligent’ Batten Mount PIR Occupancy switch range DANLERS have extended their range of cost effective, energy saving occupancy switches with 3 new ‘Passive’ controls. Each control has a photocell override, so switching may be determined either by occupancy AND lux level or alternatively by occupancy only. This is particularly useful in low light level environments. These new controls are in addition to DANLERS recently launched ‘Intelligent’ Batten Mount controls with a one touch calibration process that distinguishes the difference between artificial and natural light delivered to the photocell, resulting in optimised switching levels and enhanced energy savings. These UK manufactured IP53 rated controls can switch lighting loads of up to 10 amps and can be mounted onto the end of lighting battens. They detect movement of a warm body within their detection zones (either 5m or 10m variants) and include a photocell which can be set to between 100 lux and 3000 lux. This technology has a GB patent pending No. 1219746.3.

NEWS Total cost of ownership is undergoing an evolution, according to a paper from Siemens Financial Services (SFS). Financial managers are starting to incorporate two new factors into the TCO model: the time cost of money and free cash flow issues (characterised as frozen capital), as well as savings through energy efficiency. Previous SFS research has shown that considerable sums lie frozen in capital equipment acquisition, and that industry, commerce, healthcare and the public sector can often make savings of over 25 per cent on their energy costs, depending on the technology application. The inclusion of the new factors highlights the need for TCO models to consider the most financially efficient way of acquiring and using equipment, in addition to simply calculating the costs. Darren Riva, head of energy efficiency financing for SFS in the UK, comments: ‘The new TCO mindset, in our view, increasingly recognises the importance of incorporating frozen capital and energy efficiency in the TCO calculation. As a result, many organisations are turning to asset finance techniques in order to liberate frozen capital and afford energy efficiency equipment upgrades. Instead of simply funding the purchase cost of equipment or systems, these finance solutions are covering other requirements identified in the TCO analysis, such as installation, maintenance, service, training and upgrades.’ Such finance plans are designed to make energy efficiency investments affordable immediately.

ROYAL FLUSH Örjan Fjällström has lit a high profile Swedish Television special broadcast, celebrating the first birthday of HRH Crown Princess Victoria’s daughter, and second in line to the throne, HRH Princess Estelle. The service, which took place in the Royal Chapel, a beautiful church dating back to the Rococo period located in Stockholm’s royal palace, was key lit by Fjällström using six Robe ROBIN 1200 LEDWashes. The fixtures proved the ideal solution to many of the practical challenges he faced in lighting the event. The Royal Chapel is a heritage site complete with white marble altarpiece extending up to the ceiling. Nothing can be flown from the ceilings or attached to the walls. The only options for lighting positions are on floor stands or a series of window recesses along one side of the Chapel. Both were equally awkward options for getting the required key lighting onto the subjects.

Added to that, power was limited, and Fjällström needed to use the equivalent of a 5K source that would match the 4200°K colour temperature of 2K fresnels, gelled with half CTB that were placed around the space. Colleagues at The Society of Television Lighting Designers (STLD) in London recommended a couple of options, one of which was the Robe LEDWash 1200. Once the choice was made, he located the units in the window recesses opposite the Royal family’s pews to provide perfect key lighting. Two fittings, powered from a single wall socket, were expedient, effective and simplified the required rigging enormously. ‘Each LEDWash 1200, lights almost as if it were a 5K source,’ said a surprised Fjällström. ‘Essentially I have a 5K equivalent light source with a fresnel lens, a fabulous zoom and all the flexibility of colour mixing and good white key light – it is a very dynamic choice.’

Made in Britain Harvard Engineeringhas been selected as the Judges’ Choice winner of the Mail on Sunday Made in Britain Awards. Harvard triumphed over seven other shortlisted UK companies to win the overall prize, which was presented by James Caan at the Institute of Directors (IoD) in London. Harvard’s story stood out for the judges, who described the company as very ‘innovative’ and ‘ahead of the curve’, ‘spotting new markets and making the most of those opportunities’. The judges also said Harvard stood out for its ‘impressive finances, which are clearly very well managed’, adding that ‘even on a numbers basis alone, this company is very impressive’. Harvard was established in 1993 by MD, John McDonnell after he spotted a gap in the market for electronic ballasts for compact fluorescents lamps. Since then, and despite the current economic climate, the company has continued to grow. McDonnell commented: ‘We are extremely pleased and feel privileged to be named as the winner of the Mail on Sunday’s Made in Britain Awards. The ‘Made in Britain’ message is key for us, as it highlights an important strategy for Harvard, and we are delighted that was noticed by the judges. We have always designed, developed and manufactured our products in the UK and we have no plans to change this.’ June 2013 | www.tlmagazine.co.uk

Laboratories. Katie Fulcher, Birmingham Science Park Aston’s events executive and head of euroLED said: ‘This is one of the largest LED lighting events in Europe, so for the tenth year, we were determined to secure the best speakers from across the globe. It will be a great privilege to listen to the insight and industry observations from Bob Kottritsch from Lynk Labs and Mike Grather from Underwriters Laboratories, who will be flying across the Atlantic to speak at euroLED. ‘But, as a show with a long established reputation, it’s not just the speakers that will have a truly international flavour. Going by last year’s attendee statistics, we expect 3,000 visitors from over 30 countries to attend euroLED. The two-day event provides a first class opportunity for the industry to network, share ideas and forge new business relationships.’ The 2013 event will have a focus on components, such as drivers, PCBs, optics and heat sinks, as well as testing competences and LED lighting products for the medical and industrial sectors. For 2013, the euroLED Conference is being led by an advisory board of thought leaders from across the international LED lighting industry. The technical conference will explore the themes of LED systems, engines and modules, thermal management, testing and standardisation. This year’s conference sessions include: • • • • • • • • As a complement to the conference, the euroLED exhibition will host more than 100 exhibitors during

the two days, who’s stands will showcase the biggest brands in LED lighting, alongside innovative newcomers to the market. There are many reasons to attend the exhibition, which has been created with networking in mind, including the chance to learn about the latest industry developments directly from exhibitors, meet potential customers and suppliers - as well as catching up with existing contacts, of course. Taking place on the first evening (Monday 24 June), the gala dinner has been created to provide a further networking opportunity for attendees. It is the social highlight of the event, and gives conference delegates, exhibitors, and visitors alike an opportunity to network in a relaxed environment. Guests will enjoy a three-course meal, freshly prepared by The ICC’s innovative chefs. Dinner will be followed by an evening of entertainment - -and as this is the tenth anniversary, the organiser is planning something special. The 2012 gala dinner saw a fun-filled evening with entertainment from a top comedian followed by casino tables for all guests to enjoy. The emphasis is on enjoyment and allowing people to unwind in the company of their colleagues and friends. The event will be held at the ICC, a state-of-the-art venue right in the centre of Birmingham.

What the exhibitors say… Commenting on the company’s decision to take part in its first-ever event, Les Stanley, managing director of Pace UK, explained: ‘This our first exhibition, even though we have been in business for 12 years providing LED designs for a number of top-end lighting companies. ‘The attraction of euroLED is that we are confident that we will meet potential customers who are well versed in the technology of LEDs and their advantages. Demonstrating the Luxeon CoB portfolio as the ideal choice for high lumen downlights, spotlights and directional lamps due to its uniform, small light-emitting surface and high level of efficiency, Philips tells us that the family of chip-on-board (CoB) products can deliver up to 6000 lumens with a typical efficacy of 105 lm/W (hot tested) for bright white light. The smaller LES allows designers to use less expensive optical solutions to achieve higher centre-beam candlepower than with competing products. Offered in four versions with an LES of 9, 13 or 15 mm, the arrays deliver up to 6000 lm output. Hot tested and specified at 85°C, the CoB arrays utilise a metal-core printed circuit board solution. This platform enables better reliability, thermal heat dissipation and handling in LED assembly. www.philipslumileds.com/designtools

The precision sensor manufacturer will feature two main product ranges on its stand: the colorCONTROL MFA, a series of bench-top, multi-point measurement systems for LEDs, and the thermoIMAGER TIM series of thermal imaging cameras for heat sink optimization, and measuring the temperature of LED housings, junctions, drivers and components. The colorCONTROL MFA-5 verifies the colour, intensity and colour temperature (in Kelvin) of up to five LEDs simultaneously. The measuring system is modular and so can be extended by adding extra MFA-E modules, in batches of five channels, up to a maximum of 20 modules (100 channels). The series is suitable for a range of applications, including LED tests (binning), indication and displays, front panels, dashboard sequence tests, and selfluminous object inspection. Micro-Epsilon’s stand will also feature the thermoIMAGER TIM 160 and 200 series of inline radiometric thermal imaging cameras. These plug-and-play units provide temperature images and profiles of a target area and come with full software packages that enable the user to configure all the parameters of the device, as well as enabling the real time capture and storage of images or video of an event for slow motion play back or snapshots at a later date. The camera can be set up very close to a single or bank of LED luminaires to measure the infrared energy coming from the surface of the LEDs. www.micro-epsilon.co.uk

Paul Flemming from Mean Well, Tom van de Buschee from Bridgelux, and the UK’s Jamie Fox from IMS Research. In addition to these and other great speakers from Britain and the Continent, EuroLED will welcome American speakers, Bob Kottritsch from Lynk Labs and Mike Grather from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), with UL being the EuroLED 2013 conference sponsor. For exhibitors, EuroLED 2013 represents a chance to launch new products, increase brand awareness, talk with top manufacturers and decision makers, assess the competition, encounter potential business partners from across the globe, benefit from media coverage, and meet existing customers face-to-face. With EuroLED reporting fast and furious sales of exhibition stands in early April, this year’s event is sure to showcase a broad range of new and established brands alike. The EuroLED trade show is a chance for all manner of lighting professionals to rub shoulders and network. Around 3,000 visitors are expected at this year’s event, including lighting and luminaire manufacturers, technical directors, LED module manufacturers, architects, designers, LED material and chemical suppliers, LED chip manufacturers, specifiers, buyers, students, and end users. In 2012, lighting buyers represented a six per cent proportion of the 2,000 EuroLED visitors - a calculator will tell you that adds up to 120 buyers! One visitor at this year’s event will be Jaime Yates, an experienced light bulb buyer for Lyco, one of the UK’s premier lighting retailers. He’s a regular at international lighting trade shows. A brief chat with Yates provides insight into the value of these types of event for lighting professionals, and where his particular expectations may lie:

ONE MAN’S SHOW EuroLED 2013 – the future of LED lighting?

B

ack in 2004, when the first EuroLED event took place, high power white light LED was still freshly airborne - a fledgling technology hatched from Shuji Nakamura’s invention of the blue LED around a decade before. Its development had been gradual, but the new millennium saw LED transformed, phoenix-like from the flames of electric lighting, its evolution accelerated beyond expectation in the last five years. Whilst nations across the globe pledge allegiance to the new emperor of clean technologies, the EuroLED Conference, which focuses on the science and technology of LEDs, is set to hold and celebrate its tenth successive event on 24-25 June 2013, at The ICC in Birmingham. This year promises a fascinating line-up of high-profile speakers, complemented by over 100 exhibitions, and culminating in the much-anticipated gala dinner! Some of the themes of this year’s conference include: LED engines and lighting systems, drivers and controls, power supplies, thermal management, optics, PCBs, phosphors, packaging, standards and testing. A strong contingency of European speakers will be present, including Jared Davidson from Nichia, Mark van den Berg from Philips Lumileds, Fenella Frost from Photonstar,

How often do you go to shows? ‘On average, I try to get to about three or four shows per year. The biggest shows are in Frankfurt (every two years) and Hong Kong (annually) and that’s where most of the big players launch their ranges.’ What are the shows best for? ‘Occasionally you will find someone who is new in the market and who’ll likely progress further, rather than simply being a “flash in the pan”. You’re always hopeful that you’ll find that new supplier, which has all the right types of lamp at the right wattages. What you are looking for is a manufacturer, which produces high quality lamps at the right price point, meaning you get the best of both worlds.’ What’s the next big new thing? ‘I don’t think we will be witnessing any type of big new thing in the next 12 months - it’s more about upping the wattage ability. Ultimately, the industry is currently trying to replicate the existing technologies but with longer life and better efficiency. ‘Progress is what we are looking for!’ Yates’ thoughts on lighting’s state of play are, unsurprisingly, incisive; we are now at a pivotal point in LED’s history. In the last two or three years lighting giants like Cree, Nichia and Osram have been pushing the boundaries of LED lumenper-watt efficiency, setting astonishing new records under lab conditions that provided exciting glimpses into the future. That future is already beginning to be realised, and with LED manufacturing costs now tumbling, many lighting pundits predict a far greater LED uptake in the next year or two. ‘EuroLED 2013 enables industry professionals to stay abreast of LED’s evolution and glean invaluable insight for the good of their business. With the added social attraction of a delicious three-course meal plus entertainment on gala night, there can be few dates more un-missable on the lighting calendar!

Eastern promise A one-of-a-kind dining experience with lighting to match in the Emirates’ capital dramatic and elegant lighting scheme has been created by Mark Elliott, director at PointOfView Lighting (POV) in Sydney, to enhance the dining experience at Tori No Su, a Japanese restaurant at the luxury Jumeirah Hotel, Etihad Towers Abu Dhabi. The Jumeirah Hotel takes up one of the five famous Etihad Towers, which were developed by Sheikh Suroor bin Mohammed Al Nahyan. It has 382 guestrooms and 199 serviced apartments overlooking the Arabian Gulf.

Tori No Su, which means ‘bird’s nest’, is sited opposite the hotel’s main lobby and has its own designated entrance. It is the largest restaurant within the hotel, mixing contemporary style and refined taste within an interior designed by DBI Design, the Australian company, which was responsible for the architecture and interior design across the entire Etihad Towers complex. The overall design objective was to create a modern, sleek and dramatic restaurant that was inviting,

It was important to create contrast, instead of immersing the entire space with light, and to allow the various layers of the interior to breathe comfortable, warm and elegant. A natural palette of stone, timber and leather creates warmth and helps define pools of space, while a living wall of grass provides a calming backdrop with reference to the traditional Japanese focus on freshness. Backlit bars and screens inject the space with colour and vitality. The lighting by POV aims to enhance the playful and creative nature of the interior, complementing the various layers, textures, materials and forms. The POV team took care to balance the elements. ‘The challenge was to harmonise without adding visual clutter to the space - as well as to ensure functionality,’ said Fransiska Laksmono, senior lighting designer with Elliott on the project. POV created a sea of simple paper lanterns running through the space to provide ambience, punching it through with accent AR111 spotlights within the open-cell ceiling. The stone was backlit with warm white cold-cathode, bathing the diners in a secondary layer of ambient glow. The living green wall serves as backdrop to the space, and POV added drama by illuminating it with narrow streaks of light during service hours, to provide contrast and enhance the texture of the grass. Metal halide ‘grow lights’ are used overnight to ensure the plants remain alive and healthy. The restaurant serves traditional Japanese dishes along with contemporary creations. Separate areas such as the sushi bar, drinks bar and general seating areas, provide lively interaction within an authentic modern Japanese ambiance, and each had to be individually lit. ‘In some ways, darkness is as important as light, and particularly in a subtle restaurant setting such as Tori No Su,’ explained Elliott. ‘It was important to create contrast, instead of immersing the entire space with light, and to allow the various layers of the interior to breathe. This, in turn, enhances the hierarchy of the space and helps guide the viewers’ attention.’

Ashes to velvet Peterborough’s Phoenix School annual charity ball was supported by Pearce Hire. The company provided a complete audio, lighting, draping and effects package to create the perfect atmosphere for an evening of entertainment and fundraising for this important special needs school. ‘We have been a long-term supporter of this school’s charity event,’ observed Shaun Pearce, MD, Pearce Hire. ‘It provides invaluable educational and community support to an exceptional bunch of children. We are delighted to have played our part in an evening of great entertainment that raised over £7,000 for the school’s on-going projects’. Pearce Hire’s crew rigged two trusses, which housed most of the intelligent lighting installed for the event, including Martin Mac 700 Profiles and Robe 1200 LEDWash’s. These fixtures provided ambient room lighting for the dinner, stage lighting for the various acts and speeches, and dance floor lighting for the band and entertainment. In addition, a number of Martin Mac 250 Entour profile fixtures were located around the stage to provide backlighting and depth. Around the perimeter of the room, Pearce Hire installed 60m of pipe and base with white voile cloth, enhanced by 32 iPix BB4’s which lit the white material up with dramatic colour washes. Show producer and LD, Jake Vernum and operator, James Coghlan used a Chamsys MQ100 Pro 2010, with dimming and distribution from an Avolites Art 2000 Rack. Organiser, Liza Schwarz was delighted with the results. ‘Pearce Hire really helped us put on the best event to date and we are really grateful for their support,’ she enthused. ‘The atmosphere they created was intimate and just perfect for a great evening of entertainment and fundraising. Nothing was too much trouble, and they really went all out to answer our brief and present a great set design. The invaluable funds raised at the ball will certainly help support these children with their special needs learning’.

NEWS Piece of cake

On tour Luc Peumans of Painting With Light (PWL) has produced the lighting and set design for the Dutch and Belgian touring versions of So You Think You Can Dance. Peumans worked closely on the lighting design with PWL’s Dimi Theuwissen; they referenced the basic design to the hit TV programme, adding two large factory style fans, lots of metalwork and some innovative lighting practicals. It’s the fourth successive year that PWL has been involved in lighting and set design for the tour, adding its own touches of individuality and style. Winding bodies, uplifting beats and swirling dance moves were among the inspirational triggers for the lighting, which was developed to be flexible and work whether the rig was flown or ground supported – depending on the venue. The principal lighting kit comprised 26 x Martin MAC Auras, 18 x MAC Vipers and 18 x Clay Paky Alpha Beam 300s for the moving lights, all located on overhead trusses. There were also 18 x ETC Source Four profiles for key lighting and specials, plus 2K fresnels, with 24 LEDPARs, used for lighting the stage, set and the fans. Twenty-five Active Sunstrips were incorporated into the stair fronts, and five striking large industrial pendant lights were flown from above. Two Robert Juliat Aramis 2.5K followspots were positioned out front.

Lighting Designer, Robb Jibson has specified a Jands Vista L5 to control lighting for Grammy award-winning rock band, Deftones’ latest tour. Having only tried it for the first time a year ago, he was struck by the power and simplicity of Vista’s v2 software, commenting that: ‘Vista makes it so easy to set up and program a show’, adding: ‘Unlike other lighting control platforms, Vista doesn’t require any complex programming or number crunching, which is very appealing.’ Travelling with a custom grid package, the Jands Vista L5 controlled more than 150 lighting fixtures on the tour, including a number of LED battens, moving heads, spotlights and strobes.

Flying high Twentieth Century Fox brought in Premier to produce the London premiere of A Good Day To Die Hard. Reflecting the full-on action of the movie, and providing a backdrop for the arriving actors, the Leicester Square premiere included a genuine ex-active-service helicopter alongside the red carpet. To add a little extra glamour, XL Events provided scenic LED along the base of the helicopter’s stage – a 17m flatbed truck. The low level of the truck provided a challenge as there was limited space around the base in which to rig the 56 tiles of Pixled FX-11 used for the event. However, the size and weight of the LED – just 3kg per tile - made working around the truck much easier. Mark Rooney, project manager for XL Events commented: ‘With the LED being at ground level and the helicopter alongside the red carpet, it was important to ensure the displayed content could be seen from above and the side. Pixled FX-11 was a good solution for this event as its 160-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angle ensured that all attendees had a great view.’ June 2013 | www.tlmagazine.co.uk

Design dotty

A recent exhibition of work by American artist, Roy Lichtenstein provided Event Concept with the perfect opportunity to go dot crazy with the lighting design

T

o celebrate the official launch of Lichtenstein: A Retrospective at Tate Modern, a private view of the exhibition and an evening drinks reception was held, with bespoke lighting design by Event Concept. Provided with an initial brief from Tate Modern that covered essential information about the artist Roy Lichtenstein, the upcoming exhibition and the atmosphere the gallery wanted to achieve, Event Concept’s production designer, Anthony Van-Sertima, responded with an adventurous and very clever concept, that took the event to a new level. ‘Lichtenstein was renowned for the use of Benday dots in his artwork – a technique dating back to 1879 that was made particularly famous by its use in comic books as a way of colour shading without using large amounts of ink,’ explained Van-Sertima. ‘By printing equally sized and distributed dots in a tight, dense formation, it tricks the eye into seeing a more saturated colour, rather than just dots. The greater the distance between the dots, the less saturated the colour. ‘With this in mind, I decided the best way to achieve a signature Lichtenstein look through lighting design would be to project a series of Benday dots onto the vast floor space, using gobos.’ When asked where he came up with the bold and stunning colours featured in the design, he continued: ‘I drew the inspiration for my colour palette from Lichtenstein’s works, using yellow, loving amber, medium bastard amber and red, over four ETC Source 4, 50-degree profile lights, coupled with 46 custom-designed and cut gobos, in addition to Source 4 Pars.’ The resulting design featured an impressive display of Benday dots that created a truly Lichtenstein-inspired ambience, and which proved a popular talking point for guests.

Ex-Or delivers 70% warehouse energy savings Ex-Or’s market-leading range of energy saving lighting solutions has been extended with the launch of Mid-Bay LightSpot PIRs, meaning there is now a full range of programmable PIR presence detection systems suitable for ceiling heights ranging from 8m up to 16m, typically found in warehouses and industrial units. Like the long-established Hi-Bay LightSpot which is optimised for heights of 12m to 16m, the new Mid-Bay LightSpot offers 360 degree movement detection, but optimised for lower heights of 8 m to 12 m. This ensures that effective presence detection with maximum energy savings can be achieved. Both Hi-Bay and Mid-Bay LightSpot allow positioning at the end of the aisle, further extending LightSpot’s energy saving capability. This is made easy with the addition of a special sensor lens mask offering more efficient detection. Energy cost savings of up to 70 per cent or more can be made in industrial and commercial warehousing and storage buildings with high ceilings. This is thanks to LightSpot’s ability to ensure the lights are never left burning needlessly in areas that have been vacated or where there is enough natural light. Both Mid-Bay and Hi-Bay LightSpot are simple to commission after installation - and can be easily reconfigured in the future in response to the regularly changing operational spaces within a dynamic warehousing environment. Commissioning Ex-Or lighting controls has been made even easier with the recent introduction of the Ex-Or HP18 LightSpot handheld controller. This low cost, pocket sized remote control is simple and intuitive to use for both installers and end users. The new Mid-Bay LightSpot is available with flush or surface mountings and is compatible with DALI or DSI ballasts.
