So tell me about the sensors and what they can do that is different?

Ecomal is delighted to announce the development of two new products that can revolutionise lighting solutions. When used in conjunction with existing LED technology, these new sensors add multifunctional capabilities to ordinary lighting. Utilising infra red technology, our intuitive sensors are not restricted by close distances that have been difficult to overcome in the past. In addition, the software that controls the sensors is readily updateable should new functions be required. The units containing the software are more durable than traditional switches and are certainly more aesthetically pleasing. The sensors have a range of 15cm distance which allows any interface control imaginable. As an example, a typical sensor-fitted tap has only one on-off hand function. Our new sensor allows the user to control temperature, pressure and flow all through differing movements of the hand. This function is highly beneficial in areas where hygiene is pivotal such as in hospitals where infection control is key.

Which markets offer you the greatest potential?

The sensors are very versatile and can satisfy and wide variety of markets from education to medical to traditional electronic sectors. We are currently working with a company that develops office lighting in order to use the sensors to control the up and down facing lights, dimming and brightness functions together or separately. We are also working with a high end audio manufacturer who would like to include the sensor in their stereo systems for functions such as for volume control, changing track or tuning the radio. We are actively seeking new customers from within the traditional lighting market as well as perhaps the sectors that have not necessarily worked with our components in the past.

What support can you offer customers in the UK and what do you specifically look to offer them?

We offer a range of standard solutions but we also have a dedicated design team to create more bespoke solutions for customers. Our sales team in based in the UK and we use only German made units for our sensors thereby ensuring only the highest quality across our range. We are attending the Luxlive show, London, in November, where we will be showcasing our sensors and the multitude of applications that they can create. Our team look forward to seeing you there.

I was given cause to reflect on just this amazing addition to our lives during the recent coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games’ closing ceremony. Hardly a ceremony at all really, just Boris waving the Olympic flag about before handing it to his Brazilian counterpart to do likewise. However, the two-and-a-half-hour spectacle that preceded the ceremonial flag-waving was truly awesome – not for the music, which was OK if you discount the ageing Essex birds clambering on top of London taxis - the entire event was made magical simply by the use of light. Whatever excitements Rio has up it’s ruffled green and yellow sleeve for 2016, the closing ceremony in London is going to take some beating – and if anyone knows where I can get one of those nifty bowler hats with the light bulb on top, I’d be grateful. Talking Rio, we’re delighted to be able to bring you information from the recent Rio summit; the report from Philips Lighting and The Climate Group makes interesting reading when considering the case for uptake of LED street lighting. In order to remain as unbiased as one can in the dark, next month we’ll be looking at potential alternatives to reduce the global lighting bill. This month is traditionally the start of ‘busy season’ for the lighting industry – the days are getting shorter and the need for better, more efficient lighting is never greater than now. It’s also a great time to inject a note of excitement into people’s lives, and that’s what seems to be happening around the globe, by designers who are learning to ‘paint’ with new colour changing LED light sources. In this issue, we’ve been looking at a number of projects doing just that, from the new ‘cover-me-in-glue-and-roll-me-through-the-flea-market’ offices of design agency, Karmarama (and who wouldn’t want to work somewhere that you have to crawl through miniature doorways into meeting rooms or start the working day travelling through a wonderland tunnel of ever-changing colour?), to the recent Walk the Light installation for the London Design Festival at the V&A by Dominic Harris. Harris uses light in the same way a fine artist uses oils, and his consummate skill has to be be seen to be appreciated. We’ve also gone further afield in our search, to look at the recent project to upgrade Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium, which is home to two sporting teams, so needs a paint-by-light facelift depending on who’s at home. Awards for excellence The annual awards of the Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) have been presented, along with incoming president, Iain Macrae of Thorn Lighting. Delivering his inaugural address to members, and echoing the sentiments of CIBSE’s president, David Fisk, Macrae called for the Society to encourage those who deal with engineering the built environment to be clear, to be seen as knowledgeable and expert, and to work to get their message across clearly in today’s multimedia-driven world. He suggested that guides, such as the Code of Lighting were acknowledged as the leading publications on such subjects, but in a global market, where standards move closer they needed to attract a wider audience and become more international in focus. The expertise of a number of individuals and

members of the SLL were recognised in a range of awards presented at the event: The Lighting Award was given to John Mardaljevic, Reader in Daylight Modelling at De Montfort University. This award was made to Mardaljevic for his longterm and significant contribution to the research, understanding and metrics around daylight, and his role in education and debate for better daylight design. Brendan Keely who heads BDP Lighting’s Manchester office and represents the SLL in the North West region received this year’s Regional Award. Recipients are acknowledged as having made a continued and significant contribution to the success of SLL around the UK. Recipients of the Leon Gaster Award were Alice Agogino and Yao-Jung Wen for their paper on the control of wireless-networked lighting. The Walsh Weston Award for their paper on modelling outdoor lighting scene brightness was given to Mark Rea, John Bullough and Leora Radetsky.

Moving on… AC Entertainment Technologies (ACET) has announced the resignation of Cally Bacchus, with his departure taking effect on 18 December. Bacchus will continue in his role as the company’s international sales director until then, allowing a period of transition to appoint his successor. Managing director, Phill Capstick commented: ‘I would like to thank Cally for the contribution he has made over the past 15 years, and wish him all the best for the future.’ Well known in the industry, Bacchus has represented AC-ET at numerous international tradeshows and helped build strong, long-lasting business relationships with its customers and suppliers around the world as part of the company’s expansion programme.

Let’s be Frank

Impacting on quality Colour and light measurement specialist, Konica Minolta Sensing believes its new illuminance spectrophotometer will make a major contribution to improving the quality of lighting around the world. The CL-500A was developed for evaluating light sources, including LED and EL lighting. It measures the special irradiance waveform and can provide measurements of the CRI of a light source. It is the first portable illuminance spectrophotometer to conform to both DIN and JIS standards. One of the applications of the instrument is the measurement of CRI and light levels of street lighting, particularly new LED systems. General manager, Paul Bowman said: ‘The human eye’s perception of brightness is influenced by the spectrum of the light source. By using LED lighting, designers are able to create a more efficient, brighter environment with a better quality of light. ‘The spectral sensor of the new CL-500A makes it possible to accurately measure both indoor and outdoor LED lighting, allowing users to compare different light sources based on real values.’ It can measure CRI, colour temperature, the spectral irradiance waveform and peak wavelength using a built-in display, so there’s no need for a PC connection, and a software developers toolkit is available, so users can produce their own software. Bowman continued: ‘The CL-500A can help to improve light quality in hospitals, stadiums, airports, offices and public buildings and highways, thereby reducing potential visual health issues and enabling designers to utilise more efficient lighting technologies.’

The Student Lighting Design Awards allow students to gain valuable knowledge about the industry, while using their creative skills to develop new products. With LEDs being embraced as the light source of choice, the finalist raised the bar again this year. Simon Terry, innovation director at Anglepoise, and one of the judges, had this to say: ‘Inspiring designs - and any of the top three could have easily landed the top spot. Great to spend time with young people with a creative instinct on the one hand, and a clear respect for materials and processes, on the other. I am sure that they will go on to great things.’ Ten finalists were chosen and working prototypes of their designs were presented to a panel of judges. The winning design was the Frank table lamp from Oliver Hrubiak, from Nottingham Trent University.

NEW APPOINTMENTS... The Wandsworth Group has appointed Lee Seagrove to the post of area sales manager with responsibility for Buckinghamshire, Middlesex, North West- and South West-London. A sales professional with more than 20 years’ experience, Seagrove has worked for a number of technology and electrical companies during his career, including Schneider Electrical. His remit covers all Wandsworth’s wiring accessory and healthcare technology products. Projection Lighting has appointed Steve Poole as technical director. He will head up the company’s technical and quality functions, augmenting the

existing management team. Poole is a qualified electrical and electronic engineer with 30 years’ experience in manufacturing, quality and international certification. He has been the Lighting Association’s laboratory manager since 2000, responsible for business growth, gaining international accreditation status, and the introduction of photometric test capability. Poole’s new role will include supporting export sales through certification of the product range and the in-house test facility at Projection. ‘I’ll also be working to improve energy efficiency for the next generation of AlphaLED products and ensuring compliance with forthcoming EU regulations,’ he said. LED Engin has announced three key appointments to support it’s continuing growth. The company has named Geoff Brown as VP of sales; Jack S Yeh as VP of

sales, China and Taiwan and Seth Halio as CFO. Brown will manage the sales team and new business opportunities outside China and Taiwan. Prior to joining LED Engin, he was VP of sales for Luxim, where he worked with solid-state lighting customers in general lighting, entertainment, architectural and horticulture market segments. Jack S Yeh brings a wealth of LED sales experience, having served for six years as VP of sales and marketing at SemiLEDs. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, from the University of Maryland. Seth Halio joins LED Engin with more than 25 years’ senior financial management experience, having been CFO at both public and private venture-backed companies. Halio is a graduate of Bucknell University and participates in the CleanTech Open and Pacific Community Venture mentoring programmes.

GlassGuard is strengthening its presence in the German market with the appointment of Peter Wolf as sales manager. The Thetford-based company produces Europe’s widest range of fragment retention lamps. Wolf brings with him significant experience at managerial level in electrical wholesaling, as well as the wider electrical industry. Together with the sales executive for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Dani Scanlen, he will be furthering GlassGuard’s commitment in the region. Chris Payne, sales director said: ‘We have seen significant growth in our customer base in Europe and a local presence in Germany will help us to work closely with our German customers to better meet their needs.’

Instead of talking to a lighting designer, this month, we thought we’d take in the view from the other side of the fence, and find out what being a lighting retailer is all about. Chairman of The Lighting Store, Kenny Collins is our willing volunteer – and he’s passionate about good lighting

enny Collins is a bit of a character. He took over the family business started by his father back in 1949. Just after the end of WWII, Mr Collins Snr, had just left the army and with a young family to feed, needed to find a source of income. He hit on the idea of making lampshades from parachute silk (it was one of the few fabrics not in short supply at the time, and was used for everything from ladies knickers to – well, lampshades). These days, Collins shares the responsibility with his sons, managing director, Daniel, and new recruit, Sam. He is clearly passionate about the lighting business and believes that, despite the recession, the UK lighting industry will weather the storm. He says that when his father started the business, there were people in every town and village in the country that could make lampshades, but now that skill has died because UK consumers are driven by cost and China can produce everything far cheaper - even if the quality of mass-market products is low. The Lighting Store caters to the middle to upper end of the market and has a well-deserved reputation for excellence, with customers from all over the UK and abroad.

When did your involvement in the family business begin? My father used to bring work home, and I wired lamp holders for a penny (old money) each. I used to do it watching television and I could earn £1 in an evening. I started work at 15 when I left school, and have been in the lighting business for 53 years now.

What’s a typical day at the office? That’s the beauty of our industry: you never know from one day to the next what’s going to happen. You could be selling light bulbs all day - or none at all and than a designer will come in at 4.30 and make a large purchase. We never know. What I do know is that people like to see and feel the quality of our lighting products in store, which is why only selling on line doesn’t really work.

What are you currently working on? We’re supplying a large fibre optic for a private house in London. It’s 6m x 4 m with a 5m drop. It’s a stunning piece, gives off no heat and only takes one light bulb!

Do you get involved personally with individual lighting projects, and if so, how do you begin to tackle a new project – can you take us through the process?

Yes. We’ll sit down with the interior decorator or owner, and discuss what they’d like to achieve. If they don’t know what they want, then we can help them and show them lights that would suit their scheme.

What do you feel is the most important element of the lighting design for a domestic interior? The actual choice of lighting is dictated by the premises it is going in to. For example, most new build flats nowadays have quite low ceilings, so flush ceiling fittings and recessed lights work best as a pendant fitting would make the ceiling look even lower. In old properties, the choice of lighting is dictated by the overall interior design scheme.

What’s the most prestigious project you’ve supplied lighting for? In the UK, we’ve done some magnificent private houses. We’ve also supplied lighting for hotels in Nigeria - and my father made the lampshades for the Orient Express when it was re-launched as a passenger train.

And which would you most like to have done? I would have loved to be involved in the refurbishment of The Savoy – that would have been a great challenge.

In your opinion – and you can only choose one - what’s the best light source currently available? Why? I still like halogen because of the quality of the light, what can be done with it and the different ways you can use it.

The LED – saviour of the 21st Century, or a monstrosity? Definitely saviour. It’s in its early days but I see all lighting forms going this way.

Why? To start with, the lights use a negligible amount of energy and don’t give off any heat. An LED bulb can last 100,000 hours where a 60wt bulb lasts for 100.

What areas of lighting technology would you like to see developing further or faster?

‘What I do know is that people like to see and feel the quality of our lighting products in store, which is why only selling on line doesn’t really work’

I’d like to see LED developing faster for the decorative market, rather than concentrating on the commercial sector as it is at the moment.

What about the emphasis – or lack of - put on LEDs by designers and specifiers? Do you find yourself having to convince your customers that sometimes, these alternative light sources will do a better job? We do have difficulty persuading customer to switch to LED, because they are so cost driven and can’t see the benefit, even though switching to LED will be much cheaper for them in the long run, but they don’t seem to understand the savings. It’s up to us as an industry to really educate people about this. I think one of the biggest problems about convincing customers to change, is the electricity companies giving away poor quality, low energy bulbs. They did a disservice to the lighting industry by

giving away such shoddy bulbs; their experience with such an inferior product has put a barrier up, and the public are reluctant to change now or see the benefits of LED.

What is your feeling on the UK’s current crop of young lighting design talent? Do they get enough support from British companies to allow them to become successful? If not, what more could be done? The problem with a lot of the designers is that the have not been in the industry long enough to know what the public wants. Good designers, like the Italians and Spanish, have been brought up in a design environment, and are conscious of design from an early age. Here they might have been involved in something at school, but they haven’t been taught to think about the cost of energy efficiency. Every year, the Lighting Association sponsors prizes to find the young lighting talent in this country, but very few of the winning designs are taken up by manufacturers or retailers. I think that the young designers should ideally try and get work experience in some of the continental companies - go and work for Flos or Phillipppe Starck or a company like that, so that they can get a real feel for design. In the UK there are a few centres of design excellence, but we don’t emphasise the importance of lighting design. If you look at a lot of the lighting websites, there are some really inferior products because they public are so price drive. What so many people don’t understand is that lighting can change the look of a room completely and make a big impact.

Who or what inspires you? The hunger within to do well at what I do; to be the best, to keep customers satisfied and be known for our excellent service, is what inspires me. In this economy, the companies that give the best service are the ones that are going to survive.

What innovations in the world of lighting excite you? I love finding new products that I haven’t seen before. I go to exhibitions, here or abroad, and will usually buy something new. I think that if someone has been innovative and come up with new designs, and a factory has seen the potential in the product, then I know from experience that someone in the UK will buy the light. We like to stay ahead and feature the latest designs, so I feel it’s always worth bringing back a sample and if the sample sells we’ll probably buy it again.

Do you look at lighting design as an art form or simply as a way to aid life in the dark – or something in between?

Lighting can be an art form, whether it’s a statement product or by mixing lighting and shade. This has been proved by Chinese theatre, which uses light to provide dramatic interest. The same can be done with lighting used to make an artistic statement. It makes it more interesting to have more than one level of lighting in a room, without subtle or dramatic shading, a room can look like an office, or just flat.

As a lighting retailer, what do you hope the Olympic Games’ legacy will be to the lighting industry? I think that the Games have shown the world that we provide an exceptional level of service, that we have high standards and a culture of excellence. This has been proven by the way the Games have been organised, from the quality of the venues, the friendliness of the volunteers and staff to the performance of our athletes.

What’s the future for the UK lighting industry? It’s always going to survive, but until the economy and general enthusiasm improves, I think it’s going to remain fairly flat.

TCP has won a contract to supply lighting, including LED bulbs to Pagazzi Lighting. The collaboration with Pagazzi has already seen TCP refit 13 of the company’s largest stores, transforming point-of-sale displays and layouts. This has made it easier for customers to purchase the right light bulb for their fittings, with all lighting now displayed in easy-to-understand categories, so that 25w, 40w, 60w and 100w-equivalent light bulbs can be found and purchased. As well as supplying its own range of LEDs, TCP has also supplied a selection of CFLs and eco-halogens, including hard-to-find flame tip versions. The new layouts within each store now include a demonstration area to present the range of light bulbs in a variety of fixtures, showing customers just how they would look in their homes.The area enables staff to demonstrate the quality of light, energy efficiency, look and feel of each bulb. Laura Pagan, buying director of Pagazzi Lighting, said: ‘It’s great to be working in partnership with TCP. The training has been invaluable, helping our staff become even more confident at helping customers to choose the right lamp. Jessica Parker, commercial director at TCP in the UK, commented: ‘We are enjoying working with such a high profile and well-respected lighting company, and the very fact that sales have doubled as a result, is a fantastic outcome. Our collaboration has been mutually successful.’ TCP manufactures and supplies energy efficient lighting in the US, with customers including Wal-Mart and Home Depot. It also has an increasingly strong presence in the UK, specialising in the development, manufacture and supply of high quality energy saving lighting.

NO GROWING PAINS Toshiba has announced it’s intention to start mass production of white LED from this month on a new production line in the 200mm wafer facility at Kaga, a production base in northern Japan. The energy efficiency and long life of white LED is winning wide-scale application in general purpose lighting, TV backlighting, etc., and significantly boosting market size from 700-billion yen to a projected 1-trillion yen in 2013. The company is applying GaN-onSilicon technology (which secures the growth of gallium nitride crystals on to a silicon substrate), to the development of white LEDs, and has collaborated with Bridgelux since January 2012. The combination of Bridgelux’s crystal growth and LED chip structure and Toshiba’s advanced silicon process and manufacturing technology has succeeded in developing a prototype chip with a maximum optical output of 614mW. Toshiba will build on this achievement to start mass production of white LEDs.

Look, no wires Alessi is continuing its march into the world of lighting design with the introduction of three cordless, rechargeable LED fittings under the AlessiLUX brand - a collaborative collection with Foreverlamp. Frederic Gooris has designed UFO. Available in green, blue, pink and orange, it’s operated by a touchdimming system and is perfect as a night-light for a child’s room. Giovanni Alessi Anghini has created Lumiere and Ricordo. Inspired by traditional oil-lamp designs, the portable lights are also operated by a touch-dimmer.

News lamps for old In anticipation of the EU ban on the manufacture and import of all incandescent lamps, Verbatim has unveiled a complete family of cost effective retrofit LED lamps for domestic use. They are designed to meet the growing demand for reliable, high quality and low energy lighting. The lamps, which have a lifetime of up to 25 years, provide up to 85% energy savings over conventional types of comparable light output. They are designed as direct low cost replacements for incandescent bulbs, halogen lamps and CFLs in general purpose lighting. ‘LED technology is the best energy saving alternative available to replace conventional bulbs. Unlike compact fluorescent lamps, LED lamps typically deliver five times the operating life, turn on instantly and do not contain hazardous materials such as mercury,’ commented Verbatim business development manager, Jeanine Chrobak-Kando.

In the blink of an eye The LED has come a long way – although not in quite such a short time as we may have believed

The humble LED has a birthday coming up. If you were put on the spot, what would your guess be – five years, possibly nine or ten …? In fact, on 1 October 2012, the LED will be 50 years old. Jeanine ChrobakKando, business development manager at Verbatim, discusses just how far the technology has come. ‘Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have become an everyday electronic device, found in widespread applications. ‘In 2011, general illumination applications accounted for the largest share of the LED market (35 per cent), followed by mobile devices (30 per cent), and signalling/signage applications at 18 per cent. ‘According to MarketWatch, by 2020, the cost of an LED bulb is expected to drop to half of its current price. Given that, the crossover point is fast approaching when LEDs will be available at a price point where they are likely to become dominant.

Growth in LED applications has been driven by innovation in materials science, optics and the development of semiconductor technologies

THE TIME LINE ‘So how did it all begin? Fifty years ago, the first practical, visible light spectrum LED was founded. Although the phenomenon of electroluminescence was first discovered in 1907 by British experimenter, Henry Round, it was in October 1962 that physicist, Nick Holonyak became the founding father of LED. He submitted a paper on the creation of a red visible-spectrum gallium arsenide phosphide (GaAsP)-based LED to the American Institute of Physics, while working at General Electric. ‘Holonyak’s LED invention gave rise to the commercial introduction of LED displays as early as 1964. These handmade devices were expensive, and for the first decade or so, only red LEDs were available. However, the miniature red LEDs had just enough light intensity and long life to be used as indicators in pocket calculators and digital watch displays during the early to mid-1970s. ‘Holonyak, a student of Nobel-prize winner, John Bardeen who developed the transistor, also invented the quantum-well laser (that became the basis for compact disc players and fibre-optics) and the first dimmer switche for household lighting. GLOWING GLOBAL ‘Since then, growth in LED applications has been driven by innovation in materials science, optics and the development of semiconductor technologies, bringing higher light output, higher efficiency and an increasing range of colours. The use of various semiconductor compounds over the years - such as gallium aluminium arsenide phosphide (GaAlAsP), indium gallium nitride (InGaN) and aluminium gallium phosphide (AlGaP) - in conjunction with the use of phosphor coating, has allowed the production of LEDs to work its way up through the visible spectrum.

‘Over the past 50 years, technology has advanced from red, through orange, yellow and green LEDs in the 1980s, to the first high-intensity blue gallium-nitride (GaN)-based LEDs a decade later. In 1991, Japanese professor, Shuji Nakamura made a further LED breakthrough with the development of white LED lighting. He unveiled the first high brightness LED using a gallium nitride emitter that produced a brilliant blue light, partially converted to yellow by using a phosphor coating. ‘Of course, it’s not only the wide spectrum of LED colours that are now available, but significantly increased light intensity and higher energy efficiencies too. Interestingly, the pace of LED improvement has a rule of thumb parallel to Moore’s Law in the semiconductor world, called Haitz’s Law. ‘First proposed in 2000 by Dr Roland Haitz, it roughly states that for every decade, the cost to produce LEDs per lumen (the unit of useful light emitted) will fall by a factor of 10, while the light output per LED package increases by a factor of 20. Haitz predicted the efficiency of LED-based lighting could reach 200 lm/W in 2020 if enough R&D investment was directed towards advancing LED technologies by governments and the lighting industry. ‘The use of LEDs is now widespread in consumer applications, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, MP3 players and televisions, with advantages over the classic LCD including low cost, low driving voltage, wide viewing angle, high contrast and wide colour range, in addition to being highly flexible. ‘An offshoot of LEDs that it’s important to mention is organic LED (OLED) technology, which is essentially a layer of electroluminescent material between two organic polymer layers. OLED technology promises to add a new dimension to lighting, and the necessary materials and production processes to manufacture colour (RGB) tune-able OLED panels has already been developed. ‘Architects and interior designers can use OLED technology to create atmospheric lighting without hot spots, glare or uncomfortable intensity. OLEDs are particularly suitable for creative use in stage lighting and novel applications in nightclub and bar environments, offering harmonious soft-light output, integrated calibration and an even distribution of light from panel to panel.

It’s been said that using LED headlights will extend the driving range of electric cars by about six miles. ‘Most importantly perhaps, there is the expectation that it will become the leading energy-efficient lighting device in the next few years, taking over from the incumbent technologies of incandescent and CFL lighting. Certainly the crossover point is fast approaching where LEDs will be available at a price point whereby they are likely to become dominant. ‘According to Electronics.ca Research Network, the market for LEDs for general lighting could reach $19.5 billion £12.3 billion) in 2012 and $31.4 billion (£19.8 billion) by 2017. While LCD monitor and TV backlighting applications are currently leading this growth, analysts are predicting that LED lighting will capture the market lead by 2014. And by 2021, LED lighting is expected to capture more than 50 per cent of the commercial building market.

DRIVING LED EFFICIENCY ‘LEDs are becoming the standard for outdoor public lighting, such as traffic lights, road warning signs and message boards. The automotive industry in particular is taking up the mantle to replace incandescent lighting

SWITCH ON TODAY ‘In September 2012, a ban on the production and import of standard incandescent bulbs came into force across the European Union. The move has been brought into effect because of the alarmingly poor levels of energy efficiency that traditional light bulbs deliver – typically using less than ten per cent of the energy supplied to create visible light. ‘This means consumers and professionals must choose low-energy alternatives, such as LED and CFL. Unlike CFL, LED lamps typically deliver five times the operating life, turn on instantly and don’t contain hazardous materials, such as mercury. LED lamps also offer a better resistance to shock and vibration. ‘And what does the future hold for LED devices - beyond becoming increasingly energy efficient and available in higher intensities? LEDs are set to become increasingly smart. One phrase we’re likely to be hearing a lot of over the next few years is the Internet of Things, with all electronic devices eventually having their own IP address, even down to individual LED lamps. Which means we could eventually programme the lighting in our homes and offices from our smartphones. ‘Whatever the future holds, it looks bright for LEDs.’

’m not sure that Nick Holonyak Jnr, the chap credited with inventing the LED way back in 1962, could have forseen that his amazing creation would have such far-reaching effects on our lives. In this, the fiftieth anniversary year of the light emitting diode, RGB LEDs are being used more and more in the public domain. In many cases it’s to enhance moods, create excitement and build a spectacle, but in others, as in the case of a children’s hospital in Birmingham, the installation is for quite a different reason.

MIDLANDS’ MYSTERY The new renal unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) has been designed with a holistic approach in order to lessen the stress and anxiety that young children suffer from when they’re transported into a hospital environment. Sarah Waller, director of The King’s Fund EHE programme, which provided project funding, said: ‘Over the 10 years that the

‘The small size and simple functionality of LED has expanded the creative scope of lighting so far that almost nothing is impossible’

EHE programme has been running, we have seen time and again that creating welcoming and calming environments makes a huge difference to the way we feel - and to the healing process.’ Derick Harrison, capital project manager at BCH explained the reasons for trying so hard to avoid the typical hospital atmosphere: ‘Going into hospital for treatment brings out worry and concern in most people - never mind in the young children we deal with. Therefore, we wanted to create an environment, which is uplifting, far removed from the clinical, sterile atmosphere usually associated with hospitals. ‘Our whole philosophy was to design the unit with children in mind - and involve them in the design process.’ A key element in the unit is the innovative Imagination Light Canvas, the first of its kind in the UK. Supplied by Philips and installed by lighting contractor, Midas Technologies, this stunning interactive light wall measures 3m x 1.5m, and is simply controlled via a standard PC, giving staff the flexibility to select from a menu of interactive or static scenes. The 144 individual LED points used within the canvas are brought to life in a myriad of colourful animations and shapes. Deliberately positioned opposite the main entrance to the renal unit’s reception area, it’s the first thing that visitors see on arrival, and serves to create immediate distraction for the young visitors, piquing their interest and curiosity. Edward Lees, product manager at Toshiba Lighting Systems UK has strong feelings about this new way of painting with colour: ‘I think RGB LED is amazing whether it is used in either one of its two applications; decorative and display lighting or in general lighting. ‘The former is in much wider use, whereas RGB for general lighting is in its infancy, relatively expensive and more difficult to adopt. ‘You only have to watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics or look at the London Eye to see the creative possibilities that RGB LED has brought to the world of display lighting; none of which would have been possible without LED. The old colour changing fixtures before LED were firmly fixed in the domain of entertainment lighting, and involved large units with coloured gel filters passing in front of a white light source. TUNNEL OF LOVE Commissioned as part of the London Design Festival at the V&A during the latter part of September, the Museum’s Exhibition Road tunnel entrance was transformed by a fantastical interactive lighting installation using, of course, LEDs. Walk the Light was the Festival’s first bespoke lighting installation and was created to challenge how light is perceived; engaging visitors with something that we all so often take for granted. Lighting designer, Dominic Harris, and his team at Cinimod Studio collaborated with Philips to bring the project to life. Commenting on the installation, Harris said: ‘I am fascinated by light, and the interaction of light, architecture and art. Responsiveness is also an essential part of all of the projects undertaken by Cinimod Studio. ‘Walk the Light embodies all of these aspects, and seeks to capture the imagination of visitors, playfully

transforming their experience of arriving at the museum by mapping the volume of traffic and converting the data into a living expression of the space.’ Arriving at the museum entrance, visitors controlled the innovative installation simply by how they moved through the tunnel. The clever – and very popular - project featured a band of white light that appeared to physically follow the visitor, forming a bright line of light tracking their journey. As one person passed, the white light jumped to the next arrival. Either side of the white band, washes of strong colour appeared to be pushed and pulled along the tunnel’s length, creating an ambient effect to represent the overall ebb and flow of the day’s visitors. Throughout the day, there was a shift in the hue and saturation of the colours as they responded to the prevailing direction of movement of the crowds. Using a combination of technologies, including thermal camera tracking and Philips LED lighting mounted on a moving monorail, the installation demonstrated the increasing sophistication of light, as it playfully and beautifully transformed the arrival experience at the museum. Rowena Priess, creative director at Philips commented: ‘The lighting world is undergoing a huge transformation, and as a result of LED, the possibilities with light to change and enhance a space are now limitless. Dominic has real vision and takes the flexibility of LED technology to new heights, truly inspiring people to see what light can do.’ Also on display at the V&A as part of the Festival is Cinimod’s Ice Angel, an interactive artwork providing participants with a glimpse of themselves, depicted in angelic form. Inspired by the way children create snow sculptures, Ice Angel introduced the digital twist of being a performance portrait device that paired the participant to their angel identity. Lees suggests that the possibilities for RGB LED are of benefit to us all. He said: ‘it’s not only event organisers who are benefiting from the technology - LED has enabled everyone to add colour to their lives and to enrich their homes and environments. With the price of LEDs dropping, more can take the opportunity to accent display cabinets or backlight their TVs, for example.

‘In a general lighting application the use of RGB LED is subtler. Colour is used to accent white light, create an atmosphere or add value to your life. However, colourchanging LED doesn’t just mean colours; it can also mean adjustments to white light. For instance the system could be used to mimic the route of the sun, to help those that suffer from sun deprivation, with lighting being set to a warm white in the morning and changing to a cool white by lunchtime and then reversing the process as you head into the evening. ‘In the workplace LED could be used to improve productivity while retailers could use lighting to make shoppers feel calmer. Likewise, it could be used in meeting rooms to match the branding of a company or even change the atmosphere of the meeting.’ DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE It seems to be the year of the light tunnel: design agency, Karmarama’s stunning new offices feature a colour changing entrance, which gives a hint of what’s to come. With successful campaigns for Costa, Age UK, Ikea and the BBC, it was felt that Karmarama’s office space needed to reflect its creative spirit, so the space was designed by bluu Solutions to provide a spellbinding welcome to the agency’s international clients, and also to provide an uplifting experience for staff. From a giant red Buddha to miniature doorways visitors must crawl through to enter meeting rooms, the office is an inventive mix of stimulating visuals and absurd experiences. To access this decadent wonderland, a psychedelic illuminated, colour-changing tunnel was installed to create an appropriately dramatic entrance. Constructed using Applelec’s LED Light Sheet fitted with RGB LEDs, the tunnel has been programmed to run a variety of colour changing sequences, pulse and chasing effects, and can even display the corporate colours of clients as they arrive for pitches. Using amBX’s amBIENT XC DMX lighting controller, the tunnel’s colour sequences can be altered throughout the building via the system’s iPad remote control. Drawing a maximum of 12.5 watts per linear metre, the use of RGB LED Light Sheet delivers an energy efficient system, featuring an LED lifespan of 50,000 hours.

Hendrik Potgieter, bluu Solutions project coordinator, said: ‘We were asked by Karmarama to focus on its customer’s journey through the space, starting with the branded automatic door opening onto a magnificent light tunnel. When one of our designers came up with the idea of the tunnel, we sought professional advice, which Applelec duly offered. The control-ability that allows the tunnel to suite with other effect lighting around the office, such as the centre stage, has come to be known on site as the ‘wiz-bang device’ that offers colour change, pulsing, stepping and any number of combinations of wizardry.’ While impact was the defining requirement of the project brief, the tunnel was created according to energy efficiency principles. Control is a key element of the installation, and with the tunnel split into 40 individual LED Light Sheet sections it’s possible to run any panel in isolation to reduce power consumption. This is of particular benefit throughout the night when just a couple of panels can be illuminated. Adjacent to the tunnel, Karmarama’s reception desk is illuminated by a further five panels again utilising an efficient LED system which draws just 42 watts when set to a static red, green or blue. Complementing the signature light tunnel, bluu Solutions created additional playful lighting features, such as circusstyle neon signage and a stage area with full lighting rig. The final thought on this amazing technology goes to Lees: ‘Green light works well as a nightlight because it can’t penetrate the eyelid as easily as white or red, and blue light is known to stimulate the production of melatonin, which helps regulate sleep, improves your mood and general wellbeing. ‘The applications are endless, but the long and short of it is, if LED is used well, it can be a low energy and long lasting way to make life feel better.’

LEDs, or light emitting diodes, are described as solid-state lighting where light energy is produced by passing an electrical current through special semiconductors. LED bulbs make traditional forms of lighting, such as incandescent and halogen, and even newer technology like compact fluorescent (CFL), look incredibly inefficient. You may have noticed how your existing light bulbs become very hot after periods

of operation. This is because most of the electricity used to power these bulbs is given off in the form of heat. LED bulbs operate at around 80% efficiency, where 80% of the electricity used is converted to light instead of heat, compared to an incandescent bulb that only turns 20% of the electricity it uses into light energy. It is highly likely that you have a significant number of halogen spotlight bulbs around your home. Are you forever making trips to your local DIY store to buy replacement bulbs when they regularly blow and fail? LED bulbs have no fragile internal components, like filaments or tubes that are prone to failure; they are extremely durable and last for many thousands of hours of operation. In fact, the average GU10 LED 50W equivalent bulb lasts around 25 years when used for an average of four hours a day. Compare this with the performance of a standard 50W halogen bulb that lasts on average, for several months before blowing and a replacement is required. A typical LED bulb will last up to 50,000 hours - that’s up to 25 times longer than halogen spotlights. This means if you switch from halogen s to LED light bulbs, you may never have to replace your bulbs again. They also have the

advantage of being ‘instant-on’ and don’t suffer from warming up slowly, as some CFL replacements do. A common misconception regarding LED bulbs is the fact that they contain harmful chemicals. This may be true for LED alternatives, such as CFL bulbs that do contain toxic materials, including mercury and lead, but LED light bulbs do not contain these dangerous materials and are completely safe for domestic and commercial use. As well as being highly efficient and lasting for many years, LED bulbs produce a high quality, natural-looking light that is indiscernible from that provided by halogens.

WIRED FOR... LIGHT? New York-based lighting designer, James Bedell specified 100 Chroma-Q Color Force Compact fixtures to illuminate the interior of a temporary pop-up store in Times Square, for Wired Magazine.

ENERGY EFFICIENT – AND NOT AN LED IN SIGHT

When he was commissioned by MKG, with a brief to make the space look and feel icy blue, Bedell decided that RGBA colour changing LED sources would be the best form of primary light source to interpret the brief – not a conventional choice for lighting clothing, games and gadgets. ‘There was some creative risk involved’, he explained, ‘but Wired is a very progressive, future-thinking company, so it was also highly appropriate. I enjoyed thinking out-of-the-box with LEDs, and once I had chosen the Color Force Compact fixtures, I was confident that it would work out really well. Their high CRI (92) and colour quality really impressed me, so I knew they would be ideal for the job.’ Soon after completing the Wired scheme, Bedell was invited by the Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) to give a presentation at New York University’s Loewe Theatre. The BGA is led by Broadway professionals, including lighting designers who are prioritising the use of genuinely more environmentally friendly technologies and reducing the carbon footprints of theatres, shows and installations. At the event, Bedell stressed all the advantages of using LEDs in this context. ‘Sustainability is a key issue in both architectural and entertainment lighting, and LDs need to promote it and think seriously about reducing power consumption,’ he said. Interestingly, he believes that the line between retail, commercial and industrial disciplines, and show and event lighting will become increasingly blurred into a widening ‘architainment’ sector.

Light savers During the summer, Philips Lighting and The Climate Group launched a major report, which presents the findings of an independent two-and-a-half year pilot of LED street lamps in twelve cities across the world. It makes interesting reading…

We all know

that local authorities the length and breadth of the UK are turning off streetlights faster than we can say Wee Willy Winky. Is plunging the country into pitch blackness between the hours of midnight and 5am really the smartest solution to saving energy and money – or could it be that there’s a much better option that would save on both, without the need for the resurgence of the blitz spirit of the 1940s? At a recent summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the results of an independent global pilot of LED street lamps in 15 separate trials across 12 cities, including New York, London, Kolkata and Sydney were presented in a report entitled Lighting the Clean Revolution: The Rise of LED Street Lighting and What it Means for Cities:

THE REPORT The results of the trial show energy savings of up to 85 per cent, as well as reports from local residents citing improved visibility, which in turn created feelings of safety from the brighter, whiter light emitted. It also highlights the fact that uptake of the technology could save a staggering 670 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions each and every year.

The report explores the global market status and potential for LED technology and provides guidelines for policymakers and city light managers who want to scaleup and finance large LED retrofits. It was launched as part of the Clean Revolution campaign at the Rio+20 UN Global Compact Corporate Sustainability Forum, and produced by The Climate Group in partnership with Philips, in support of the campaign’s argument that major energy savings can be achieved virtually overnight at relatively little cost. KEY FINDINGS Surveys in Kolkata, London, Sydney and Toronto indicated that inhabitants of those cities prefer LED lighting, with 68-90 per cent of respondents endorsing city-wide rollout of the technology. Among the benefits that were highlighted were a greater sense of safety and improved visibility. The lifespan of the LED lighting tested ranged from 50,000 to 100,000 hours, indicating a high return on investment. LED lighting was found to be a durable technology with the need for minimal repairs; the failure rate of LED products over 6,000 hours is around one per cent, compared, for example to around ten per cent for conventional street lighting over a similar time period. The LED market is at a tipping point, with white light LEDs, which are used in outdoor lighting, at the early stage of the technology curve. Market penetration is accelerating as the market is expected to expand by 60 per cent by 2020. A recent ILO report concluded that the green economy could yield up to 60 million jobs; The Climate Group and Philips are calling on governments to catalyse the scale-up of LEDs in cities and invest now in order to capitalise on this growth and create a significant number of high-value jobs worldwide.

A BRIGHTER FUTURE The LightSaver trial concludes that LEDs are now mature enough for scale-up in most outdoor applications, bringing their economical and social benefits to the masses. Following on from this success, The Climate Group and Philips are calling for an international low carbon lighting standard to be created and implemented, ensuring that citizens worldwide have access to energy efficient outdoor lighting. Mark Kenber, CEO, The Climate Group commented: ‘This report clearly highlights that LEDs are ready to be scaled-up in towns and cities across the globe. LED technology is energy efficient, scalable and positively impacts on the public; it is the Clean

stall at Rabindra Sarani in India explained: ‘These white lights have changed the way my little business use to be under the street lights every evening. ‘Earlier, anything and everything would look yellow in colour, resulting in a decreased purchasing interest among buyers, but now that a buyer can clearly differentiate between a green and blue, my sales figures have got higher.’ FACTS & FIGURES Lighting is responsible for 19 per cent of global electricity use and around six per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. In the US alone, cutting the energy used for lighting by 40 per cent would save US$53bn in annual energy costs, and staggeringly, would reduce our energy demand by the equivalent of 198 mid-size power stations!

MEASURING LIGHT OUTPUT A new and very clever device developed by Konica Minolta may well help make a major contribution to the quality of light emitted by LED street lighting as it becomes more prevalent. The CL-500A was developed for evaluating light sources, including LED and EL lighting. It measures the irradiance waveform and can provide measurements of the CRI of a light source. It’s the

first portable illuminance spectrophotometer to conform to both DIN and JIS standards, making it useable in a wider range of situations. One of the instruments potential applications is the measurement of CRI and light levels of street lighting, particularly LED systems. Konica Minolta general manager, Paul Bowman said: ‘The human eye’s perception of brightness is influenced by the

spectrum of the light source. By using LED lighting, designers are able to create a more efficient, brighter environment with a better quality of light. ‘The spectral sensor of the new CL-500A makes it possible to accurately measure both indoor and outdoor LED lighting, allowing users to compare different light sources based on real values.’ Portability issues have been overcome by incorporating a

clear built-in display screen to measure CRI, colour temperature, the irradiance waveform and peak wavelength. Bowman confirmed: ‘The CL-500A can help to improve light quality in hospitals, stadiums, airports, offices, public buildings and highways, thereby reducing potential visual health issues and enabling designers to utilise more efficient lighting technologies.’

People are not being given good information about lighting, according to the US National Lighting Bureau executive director, John P Bachner, who decries what he called; ‘the particularly poor reporting about the on-going elimination of 100-, 75-, 60-, and 40-Watt incandescent lamps from the US national inventory. In fact, incandescent lighting is not being eliminated or outlawed. What are being eliminated are the least efficient, commonly used versions, for which far more efficient and cost-effective alternatives are available, including incandescent. As long as people pick the right bulb for the result they want, in terms of lighting quality and dimmability, for example, the alternatives available right now can do everything positive that incandescents do while costing much less, consuming far less energy, and contributing far less to our greenhouse-gas and air-borne mercury problems.’ Focusing on cost, Bachner continued: ‘To tell people that a 75W incandescent lamp is less expensive than a CFL is irresponsible, given that the statement is true only if you use the incandescent for something like a paperweight! People need to know not the cost of buying one type of lamp or another, but rather the cost of owning and using them. Once people have that knowledge, they quickly realise that the incandescent lamps they grew up with are just about the most expensive there are, not the least expensive.’

down under Upgrading an airport in time for the arrival of NASA scientists with their eyes firmly fixed on a red dot millions of miles away isn’t to be undertaken lightly, as the Canberra Airport Group found when it made the decision to renovate in time for the historic Mars landing this August

became the focus of world scientific attention after the successful landing of NASA’s rover, Curiosity on Mars back in August. It’s Deep Space Communications Complex received signals from the craft as it roamed the surface of the red planet, collecting samples and searching for signs of previous life. Officials decided that the anticipated influx of scientists, astronomers and deep space enthusiasts, who were keen to experience the historical event at the site, were a good reason to speed up a refurbishment of the local airport, so architect, Guida Moseley Brown (GMB) was hired by the Canberra Airport Group to update the tired terminal precinct, in a project that has taken many years to develop. Stage one was completed 12 months ago, with Stage two now under construction. ‘In Stage one, Klik Systems demonstrated a capability and quality, which gave us confidence to work with them to design a fully customised housing for the stage two atrium,’ said Rob McLachlan of GMB. Lighting Design Partnership (LDP) designed the lighting, while Rudds Consulting Engineers handled the electrical and mechanical design services, back-up power and tri-generation.

LIGHTING THE GEOMETRY The lighting cleverly highlights the building’s surfaces and geometry - the curved facade and ceiling, the dramatic raking walls of the central atrium, as well as the floor and it’s patterning. Light and shade are modulated to create comfortable and efficient spaces throughout. Klik Systems, the classic Australian manufacturer of bespoke architectural lighting supplied around 400 custom fittings for the project, roughly half of which are energy efficient LEDs. In May of this year, the company was chosen to supply LED systems to Luminous, the LED public art facade at Sydney’s Darling Quarter precinct, billed as the world’s largest interactive light installation, and became joint sponsor of SPARC lighting design at VIVID Sydney. ‘We are delighted to make forays into public art,’ commented Klik’s international sales and marketing manager, Cliff Hadley, ‘but lighting for university buildings, public libraries, offices and transport hubs, such as Canberra Airport are our core expertise’. For the airport project, McLachlan used Klik’s suspended custom beam luminaires to form part of the architecture itself. The gate lounge beams echo (and at night are mirrored by) the curving and sloping airside facade. The series of beam pendants create rhythm and help travellers locate key areas, such as gate lounges, baggage belts and the triple-height central atrium. The beams provide up- and down-light, illuminating both floor and ceiling surfaces simultaneously. In addition to the 110 beams in the terminal, the company’s awardwinning LEDPODS have been used for the handrails in the floating aerobridges and custom air-rail for the atrium and security areas. ACTIVE LIGHT ‘A key lighting feature introduced in the terminal is the concept of active light, at either end of the journey through the terminal; the aero bridges and the baggage belt zone,’ explained Dhruvajyoti Ghose, managing director of LDP, New South Wales. When it’s inactive, the belt is illuminated with a blue light, which turns to white when the belt is in use. Klik’s beam was modified to incorporate two light sources, which are automatically switched on belt activation. ‘We chose Klik, due to its local Australian production, ability to meet timeframes and to customise, and the overall build quality including cost. We also took into account Klik’s excellent historical performance record,’ said Olaf Theden, senior electrical engineer at Rudds. Energy efficiency and sustainability are important factors in the design of the terminal, and intelligent DALI control systems have been incorporated to minimise power usage via sensors, time schedules and automatic daylight dimming. ‘Stage two of the terminal features a vastly increased range of LED products included within Klik beams and other fittings, in order to minimise both on-going energy use and maintenance requirements,’ explained Theden. Hopefully, the scientists and deep space boffins in town for what promised to be the most exciting space show since the lunar landings of the Sixties’ were impressed.

THE NUMBERS It was first opened as a single airstrip in 1920. Canberra Airport is 8km form the city and 300km southwest of Sydney. First successful Mars landing took place on 6 August 2012 Stage 2 of the refurbishment included a 3-storey atrium. Isotera – Making LED Lighting more reliable and faster to install Isotera will showcase their exciting new system for the installation of LED lighting at Lux Live, Stand F25, Earls Court, London (6-7 November). Isotera has developed a system to power and control groups of LED light fittings over a simple bus system, without connectors and drivers. This speeds up the installation process, reduces the chances of mistakes and allows last minute changes to be made at no cost. A global lighting initiative is on course to make waves among the professional lighting and design community. One Beam of Light is an initiative set up by designer, Light Collective in collaboration with HavellsSylvania’s Concord brand.

GOLD MEDAL PERFORMANCE Czech technical solutions provider, AV Media invested in Robe moving lights and Anolis LED fixtures for the Czech House Pavilion, a base for sports fans and supporters of the Czech national team during the London 2012 Games. The Czech house took over the entire Business Design Centre in Islington, where it based its National TV’s Olympic broadcast studio. The Pavilion featured massive screens so the public could enjoy all the best of the Olympic action, together with food, beer, wine, chess, street-ball, art, merchandising and a host of cultural offerings, including a stage for live bands, DJs and other entertainment, with sociability high on the agenda. AV Media’s project manager, Filip Klein explained that when they won the contract to co-ordinate all the technicals for the Czech House, it was a ‘no brainer’ that they would specify lighting from the Czech Republic’s best known entertainment technology manufacturer. Apart from this, with no air conditioning in the venue, it was essential that they utilised low heat emitting light sources to keep the room at comfortable temperatures for everyone’s enjoyment, particularly as the English summer, with temperatures soaring into the 30s, finally arrived just in time for the Games. ‘We like Robe not just because it’s Czech,’ says Klein, ‘but because it’s reliable and really excellent quality kit’.

Distribution rights AC-ET has been appointed as a distributor for Danish-based SGM Lighting’s range of LED products. The appointment, which follows strong market penetration of the rental and architectural sectors, means AC-ET will work in parallel with existing distributor, LED Projects, which will continue to focus on the nightclub installation and broadcast sectors. MD, Phill Capstick was impressed by the latest generation of SGM products after seeing them at the 2012 Prolight+Sound exhibition in Frankfurt. He felt that the brand would nicely complement AC-ET’s existing distribution portfolio of LED brands.

Exclusive in the US AC Lighting has been appointed as the exclusive US distributor for ArKaos, unveiling the partnership and innovative product range on its stand at InfoComm 2012. ArKaos provides technology solutions designed for live productions wanting to integrate video, projection or LED control with show lighting. AC Lighting’s track record of supplying to lighting designers, consultants, dealers and rental companies in the theatre, education, AV and worship sectors made it the ideal partner to distribute the ArKaos portfolio, which is purpose-designed for these live entertainment markets. The idea behind One Beam of Light is to use participants’ imagery to create a collection of stunning and inspirational photographs that start with a single source of light, stripped to its minimum, shaped in such a way to create a truly unique picture. Once assembled, the images will be curated by a guest panel of designers and visionaries, including: Keith Bradshaw of Spiers & Major, Gerd Pfarre of Lichtplanung, Matt Clark of UVA and Terence Woodgate of Studio Woodgate. The selected images will be displayed in London followed by an international tour, which will take in key cities across the globe and feature the artists’ work on a large scale. Sharon Stammers and Martin Lupton of Light Collective commented: ‘The One Beam of Light project enables entrants to strip light to its barest essential and show their skills in manipulating the medium, and revealing its inherent beauty. We will then take the best images and use them to promote lighting design worldwide as a key creative industry. We are enthused to be collaborating with Concord on this fantastic initiative.’ A selection of the images will also be used to create a commemorative book about light; which will be published after the first series of exhibitions, and will be available for the lighting, design and architecture communities. The book will include the images and a brief description, and details of all contributors, allowing their work to be appropriately recognised. FEVER Outdoor events can be a nightmare of planning and logistics. When you consider the vagaries of the weather, people, equipment – and almost anything else you can think of – it’s a wonder we ever get them off the ground. That we do is in no small way thanks to the talents of the lighting designer and his crew

Avoiding the possibility of bad weather wasn’t an option when Westlife announced their final tour would end with not one, but two farewell concerts at Dublin’s Croke Park. Lighting for the shows – and for the six-week tour leading up to them - was supplied by HSL, and included almost 200 moving lights.The lighting design was created by Dave Lee and operated on the tour at Croke Park by Simon Horn. Mike Oates project-managed for HSL. Oates commented: ‘The show was absolutely stunning and a real tribute to all involved in producing another complete Westlife experience with the highest production values that will be remembered for many years to come’. The show was beamed to 300 cinemas, upping the ante for careful and considered additional lighting. Lee worked closely with the tour’s show producer Emma Bull who had clear ideas about how the lighting needed to match the visual treatments and effects. HSL supplied all the lighting trussing and motors, which included W- and Z-shaped trusses to keep the design angular.

ALL IN THE DETAIL The moving lights from the tour were a mix of Martin Mac 3K Profiles MAC 2000 XB Washes, Clay Paky Sharpies, GLP Impression RZs and super-small and fast Robe ROBIN 100 LEDBeams. These were backed up by conventional fittings, including Atomic Strobes, Showtec Active Sunstrips, 4-lite Moles, i-Pix Satellites, Pulsar ChromaSpheres, and for atmosphere, Le Maître stadium hazers. Audience lighting was supplied by Just Lite, adding another 100 fixtures to the list – including Vari*Lite 3500 Washes and Robe ColorWash 1200E ATs, which were coupled with 4-lite linear Moles and 7K Falcon Beam searchlights from HSL. Operator, Simon Horn commented: ‘HSL looked after us very well. We didn’t actually need much attention once the tour was out as the kit was all in such excellent condition!’ LIVE AND TELEVISED Summer in Ukraine doesn’t usually have the same potential for rain as Ireland, but lighting events there is no less challenging. Rob Sinclair was responsible for the recent Queen tour, which kicked off in Independence Square in Kiev, in front of an audience of 500,000. Just to add to the tension, the event was televised live as part of Euro 2012 and also streamed live online.

Sinclair chose a Jands Vista L5 console, taking advantage of the latest technologies. The touring rig featured more than 200 moving lights arranged on six moving pods. Sinclair commented: ‘The L5 has definitely been designed to make controlling even large and complex shows like this extremely easy.’ He took full advantage of the matrix effects to produce great looks from the rig’s 180 Mac 101s, explaining:‘Vista gives the tools to achieve straightforward tasks easily, while retaining the ability to engage in complex programming. You don’t have to do any maths to write a cue.’ EXIT, STAGE LEFT EXIT 2012, the vast four-day festival in Serbia came with its own set of technical challenges. Staged in the picturesque Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, it attracted more than 100,000 music fans and 500 live acts on 20 stages. Serbian company, Studio Berar supplied 130 Robe moving lights for lighting designers, Marko Malesevic, Goran Kravic and Radoslav Mihalek. The fittings were a mix of ROBIN 300 Beams, ColorSpot 700E ATs and ColorWash Zoom 575s. The Color Wash 575E AT units were the most prominent across the site, with over 85 fixtures, mostly hung on overhead trusses giving the designers a myriad of creative possibilities by using the smooth gobo and prism rotations and the wide zoom of the Color Wash 575E ATs. The super-quick pan-and-tilt movement made them ideal for the dance arena. With a full four days – and nights – of use, reliability could have been an issue, but the fixtures worked constantly for all four days. CLASSICAL BEAUTY More Robe fittings – this time moving lights and LED fixtures – were specified by lighting designer, Helmut Krammer to illuminate the 2012 Summer Night Concert, staged by the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra in the sumptuous Baroque setting of Schönbrunn Palace. The seminal event, which was attended by more than 100,000 people, was beamed live to 60 countries.

Summer in Ukraine doesn’t usually have the same potential for rain as Ireland, but lighting events there is no less challenging The lights were used in four key areas of the palace’s extensive and beautiful gardens - the main and ballet stages, the Gloriette, and the Neptunbrunnen Fountains. Krammer commented ‘Robe provided absolutely the right products for the project, and I found it wonderful to work with fixtures that gave me the freedom and flexibility to achieve the precise creative look and feel I wanted’. He utilised 60 ROBIN 600 LEDWashes, 30 x ROBIN 1200 LEDWashes, 10 ROBIN MMX Spots, 12 ColorBeam 2500E ATs, five ColorSpot 2500E ATs, seven CitySkape Xtremes and 14 CitySource 96s, in order to combine his skills of practical, ornamental and architectural lighting with spectacular effects. The LEDWash 600s were used to colour and streak vast areas of lawn stretching out around the stage. They also added colour and character to the large stone Gloriette structure crowning the hill, and the Neptune Fountains. The CitySource 96s and CitySkape Xtremes provided general coverage for the massive Gloriette, while the MMXs were used to add intricate texturing to the Neptune Fountains, together with projections from the ColorSpot 2500E ATs. Near the ballet stage, ColorBeams were used for aerial effects shooting far into the night sky. Krammer explained that; ‘lighting the classical repertoire needed special interpretation. It wasn’t so much that the orchestra needed lighting as a focal point, more that the entire environment became integrated, alive and part of the event, imbibed with a classical atmosphere that enveloped everyone with a positive and joyous vibe. In this, the role of lighting was absolutely vital.’ Happily, the weather also performed on the night, presenting a beautiful warm calm evening for the event.

THE NEW

and highly photographed Soweto Theatre forms part of a multi-million rand culture-led urban regeneration programme, and has certainly made an immediate visual impact on the surrounding area. The new theatre in the heart of the world’s most well known township deliberately resembles a giant child’s toy, with walls clad in bright blue, yellow and red tiles - contrasting with the community halls where plays in Soweto were once performed. Theatre going fell during the 1970s and 1980s, when crime was rife and people were afraid to leave their homes at night; now the streets are once again safe for locals. The foyer, which faces south, overlooks the vast area of Soweto through an expansive glass frontage, finished with a canvas roof to complement the curving walls. In order to ensure theatregoers get the very best experience from their visit by lighting performances to look their best, the new colourful and inspirational Soweto theatre building has been fitted out with a range of lighting options, including more than 200 ETC Source Fours, including 72 Source Four fresnels. Additionally, lighting designer and project consultant, Denis Hutchinson specified 30 Robin 300 LEDWashes and 12 600E spots –selected both for their versatility and flexibility for future productions.

‘With the installation of ETC’s Source Four lighting range, the Soweto Theatre will stand out as a theatre of international quality, rivalling not just Johannesburg and Cape town, but also London and New York’ Supplied by Johannesburg-based dealer, Prosound, the Source Fours are proving to be workhorses in the main auditorium and almost entirely account for the overhead rigs in the two studio spaces.‘ETC Source Four Fresnels were a late entry into the competition,’ explained Hutchinson. ‘ETC flew a unit out to South Africa for me to test, and I was very pleasantly surprised. ‘To the eye at least, the output is comparable to a 1 200W Fresnel - and of course you are only running 750W, so from the green perspective it’s a better unit. ‘They are very nicely and solidly built, and the way in which the lamp is housed is very solid. I think they will work very well for this venue; and of course virtually all the luminaires in the studio spaces will use the same lamp. This means the theatre doesn’t have to carry stock of lots of different lamps, which is also very useful in terms of ongoing running costs.’ He was familiar with the Robe fittings, saying: ‘Robe is a very solid and reliable brand in my experience, and units certainly need to be robust in this environment, where they will be in almost daily use for many different scenarios.’ The theatre is made up of two variable configuration studio theatres - of 180 and 90 seats each - along with a

main proscenium auditorium with 420 seats. The schedule is already oversubscribed, with its first months dedicated to youth, comedy and Women’s Day events. The venue is also hosting the TV talent show, Idols. In the long run, it is set to move from a receiving house to a production house. Discussing the project, Prosound managing director, Ian Blair commented: ‘With the installation of ETC’s Source Four lighting range, the Soweto Theatre will stand out as a theatre of international quality, rivalling not just Johannesburg and Cape town, but also London and New York. ‘Over and above the Source Fours themselves, we also supplied the theatre with a large amount of accessories, including barn doors, top hats, irises, gobo holders, boom arms and lens tubes. ‘The choice to install the Source Four lighting range will give the theatre’s patrons an enhanced visual experience that will match any production in the world today. We’ve already had some fantastic feedback from both visitors and staff, and are honoured to able to help regenerate the area.’ All of the new lighting is now in the hands of house lighting technician, Nkululeko Mazibuko, who trained at Johannesburg’s landmark Market Theatre, and has had considerable experience working on arts and music festivals where he designed shows and staged workshops and training. He is delighted to have the Robe rig at his disposal, having worked with Robe products before, but nothing like at this level. He particularly liked the gobos, effects and various features of the ROBIN 600E Spots, and ‘loves the LEDWash 300s,’ commenting that ‘they are very good lights for improve-style busking.’ The first production put on in the theatre was The Suitcase, a duologue adapted by director, James Ngcobo, with musical direction by Hugh Masekela.
