As London scrubs up, hoses down, and generally indulges in some lastminute primping before the annual design festival, I confess to a last minute attack of nerves on behalf of all the events - wondering if they’ll actually out-do themselves with all the pre-show hype and grand ideas. I shall no doubt be worrying about nothing again this year, and all of the shows and events that go to make up the fantastic festival celebrating all things design will be on track for another explosive year. To share a small taste of what’s to come, TL has compiled a show guide this month, which features some of the lighting community must-attend events for anyone who’s lucky enough to be in town during the middle of September. We’ve talked to organisers and exhibitors at Tent, 100% Design, Decorex, and last, but not least, at designjunction’s dedicated lighting show, lightjunction, so if you’re limited as to the amount of time you can spend being wowed by the latest in lighting design, we’ll hopefully make the task of choosing where to go and what to see just a little easier. On a different subject, did you notice that nPower recently compiled a survey into lighting in restaurants and bars across the UK? And would you be surprised to hear that when asked whether they’d accept sub-standard lighting in a restaurant or bar, almost a third of those polled said they had left a venue after finding the lighting was too bright – or possibly worse too dim, to eat by? I must admit, I was surprised by the figures, but my question would have to be: why on earth did they ever darken the doorstep (no pun intended)in the first place if the lighting wasn’t up to snuff? Call me fussy, but I’d certainly count being able to see what I’m being served as a fairly essential requirement when choosing a restaurant, wouldn’t you?

If you didn’t know that the Serpentine Gallery had been creating a temporary pavilion on its front lawn for the past 14 years, you could be forgiven for thinking that an alien flying saucer had just landed in Kensington Gardens. Perched on a Druid-like formation of large boulders, this year’s iteration looks like a hollowed- out snail shell patched together with masking tape, halfway between a home for the Flintstones and a galactic vessel ready to take off. It is the work of the largely unknown Chilean architect Smiljan Radic, who follows in the wake of household names such as Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry. Occupying a footprint of some 350 square metres on the lawn of the Serpentine Gallery, Radic’s plans depict a semi-translucent, cylindrical structure, resting on large quarry stones. Radic’s Pavilion has its roots in his earlier work, particularly The Castle of the Selfish Giant, inspired by the Oscar Wilde story, and the Restaurant Mestizo, part of which is supported by large boulders. Design as a flexible, multi-purpose social space with a café sited inside, the Pavilion will entice visitors to enter and interact with it in different ways throughout its four-month tenure in the Park. On Friday nights, between July and September, the Pavilion will become the stage for the Serpentine’s Park Nights series, sponsored by COS: eight site-specific events bring together art, poetry, music, film, literature and theory and include three new commissions by emerging artists Lina Lapelyte, Hannah Perry and Heather Phillipson. Serpentine Pavilion 2014 launches during the London Festival of Architecture 2014. At night, the semi-transparency of the shell, together with a soft amber-tinted light, draws the attention of passers-by like lamps attracting moths. A special thanks to LED Linear as a silver sponsor and Architectural FX who donated the LED light inside the pavilion. On the ceiling, the VarioLED Flex PHOBOS winds its way round with a warm light color of 3000 Kelvin, effectively lighting accents on the ceiling structure.

The unusual shape and sensual qualities of the Pavilion have a strong physical impact on the visitor Smiljan Radicć

HIGHLIGHT Head to head MHA Lighting has been shortlisted for The Innovation Award at the 2014 National Business Awards. The company will face stiff competition from nine other finalists, including British Gas and Heathrow Airport, as it competes for the prestigious award. John Welsh, MD of Digital & Content at UBM Live, who is judging the category, remarked on the MHA entry: ‘MHA’s Low Bay TiLite was intended to replace fluorescent fittings in lower ceiling applications but the sealed nature of the units, meaning no dust or dirt, made it an ideal product for hospitals and its energy efficiency means customers can save money and cut their carbon footprint. Sales have increased substantially.’ Tom Harrison, MHA Lighting MD, added: ‘Innovation is

always at the heart of everything we do, so it is a particular honour to have been named a finalist for this award. Finalist status alone is a valuable accolade, but we will be keeping everything crossed ahead of the ceremony in November.’ Alex Evans, programme director of the National Business Awards, added: ‘The diversity and quality of this year’s finalists have firmly established the National Business Awards as the talent scout for UK plc, with market leading household names recognised alongside the best emerging business brands. ‘With a variety of industries represented, these recoveryleading businesses have demonstrated the return on investment in people, innovation, customer service and leadership.’

Working in harmony Robert Juliat and ACT Lighting have entered into a strategic agreement for ACT to become the exclusive distributor for all Robert Juliat products in the US. The Wallingford, US office will remain operational through to the end of the year, but ACT will manage all sales and customer service issues going forward. RJ USA’s Fred Lindauer and Pete Engel will join the ACT Lighting sales group, and the entire team will work together to provide a smooth and seamless transition. Founded in 1993, ACT Lighting distributes entertainment lighting equipment used in the concert touring, theatrical, and architectural industries. ‘We are very proud to add Robert Juliat lighting products to ACT’s roster,’ says chairman, Bob Gordon. ‘Robert Juliat has long been a leader in the field, and has established an excellent reputation for top quality lighting fixtures based around superb optics and ergonomic design. ‘We feel this agreement is a logical way to provide a future growth for Robert Juliat in the US. ACT Lighting is well positioned in the American market to bring added value for both the customers and Robert Juliat,’ explained MD, François Juliat.

Luxonic has just completed a three-quarters-of-a-million pound, ten-month programme to expand its production facilities in Basingstoke, in order to allow for increase in demand for LED luminaires. Consolidating all of the company’s manufacturing at the Basingstoke site required an extensive re-organisation of the factory. Two mezzanine assembly areas have been installed, increasing the production area by 30 per cent. The introduction of a lean manufacturing programme streamlines the manufacturing process, vastly improves efficiencies and motivates the assembly teams. The principle is to create production cells for each of Luxonic’s product ranges, whereby a team is now responsible for every aspect of that range’s production. Virtually every luminaire has been re-designed around LED technology, from high bays to ceiling and wall fittings. The investment now sees an additional Trumpf 3000 automated punching station and a Trumpf 85 tonne brake press respectively for the automatic pressing of steel luminaire body parts, and the forming of luminaire metalwork. For final finishing, a custombuilt Ercon powder coating paint plant has been installed. With a continuous track length of 44m, it enables double hanging of products at an increased track speed, which increases output and improves energy efficiencies.

Classic Red Dot design The Superstar Classic A40 LED lamp from Osram has been distinguished with the renowned Red Dot Award for product design. The lamp brings together the popular design of traditional light bulbs with modern LED light. ‘We expect that more and more end consumers will be taking advantage of LED lamps in the coming years,’

believes Geert van der Meer, head of Osram’s LED lamps and systems business unit. ‘Our award winning LED lamp is characterised by the fact that it is manufactured in Europe. Furthermore, its most important components are developed by us in-house – this ensures a consistent design, premium quality and short delivery times.’

The award-winning A40 has the same dimensions as a classic light bulb, meaning that it fits into all luminaires previously equipped with light bulbs. The lamp is based technically on a new modular principle, where identical modules are used in different lamps, achieving, among other factors, a uniform design appearance.

Hermes’ new warehouse and office lighting all taken care of

L

uxonic has designed a new lighting scheme for a large warehouse facility in the north of England, to be occupied by delivery company, Hermes. The 15,000 sq m cross-dock property is in Warrington’s Omega North Business Park, and will serve as a state-of-theart parcel handling distribution depot for the international courier company. Luxonic was tasked with providing lighting schemes for both the main warehouse and the office space that achieved the desired lux levels, while minimising energy usage. Minimising maintenance was also vital in designing a system that keeps running costs as low as possible for Hermes. Rotary North West introduced Luxonic Lighting to the project; the company tdesigned a full LED lighting solution featuring both Luxonic’s Hi-Max and Skylux LED fittings combined with LED downlighters. The Hi-Max LED high-power suspended luminaire, which is designed for mounting at heights up to 18m, has been used in the main warehouse to achieve the necessary lux levels for the large open space. The scheme uses fewer fittings than the original concept design, reducing both power and future maintenance costs for the client. The office space benefits from the Skylux LED profiled optic luminaire, which offers

a comfortable visual environment due to its satin polycarbonate high transmission formed lens. The office lighting scheme uses downlighters from Luxonic’s V-LED100 and 200 ranges. The V-LED100 is a high efficiency low wattage fixed, recessed, LED luminaire with reflector width options. The V-LED200 has a newly-developed light engine and optical system integrated into a diecast aluminium heat sink, resulting in twice the efficiency of a compact fluorescent. Energy efficiency and user comfort are ensured by controlling brightness in conjunction with a white reflector. Adam Leach, estates manager at Hermes, said: ‘Our distribution and handling centres require a high level of lighting to meet Health & Safety criteria, and to ensure a pleasant working environment is provided. ‘It is vital that these lighting systems are as

energy efficient as possible to reduce our carbon footprint and energy usage. The Luxonic luminaires, together with the specially programmed lighting controls, look to keep energy wastage to an absolute minimum while the quality of lighting in the property is uncompromised.’ Hermes’ warehouse also benefits from a site-wide KNX lighting controls system as well as the constant monitoring of the luminaires via DALI to reduce energy consumption where possible. Presence detection and daylight linking increase efficiency further, as they allow lighting to be on only when someone is present and automatically adjust the luminaire’s output, and therefore energy use, when monitoring the amount of natural light contributing to the lighting levels. ENERGY EFFICIENT

HIGHLIGHT Better by design? In Shanghai, Sansi unveiled a 10W LED lamp as a direct replacement for the 100W incandescent, in what the company believes to be a low power level not achieved before in lighting history. Sansi first started its latest research and development plan in January 2012; the second phase focused on the development of the 100W LED bulb. A number of technical challenges had to be overcome, including the need to simultaneously address high luminous efficacy, wide light distribution, superior heat dissipation performance all into an A19 bulb size.

Sansi bsays it has managed to overcome all the technical challenges, achieving a total output of 1600 lumen with a 270-degree light distribution, a lifetime of 40,000 hours - all while running at just 10 watts. The company believes that, in comparison to its competitors in the LED bulb business, Sansi’s 10W LED bulb saves twice as much energy, while joint temperature is maintained at <45℃.Other significant features include a ceramic heat sink design for superior heat dissipation, an optimized IC power supply design, and a two-level, omnidirectional LED chip layout.

Smoke gets in your eyes Vapouriz Electronic Cigarettes is set to make energy savings of around 45 per cent and enjoying significant light quality improvements following the installation of retrofit LED panels from Crescent Lighting. The fast growing company has recently completed a major refurbishment and enlargement of its Guildford premises, which included upgrading existing fluorescent lighting with retrofit LED panels in various parts of the facility. While this included replacing a mix of 600mm x 1200mm recessed modulars and some surface battens, the project also called for the specification and installation of energy efficient lamping in the newly built main office area. On both counts lower maintenance and improved visual comfort were prerequisites. Brett Horth, managing director of Vapouriz said: ‘LED lamping offers us significant energy and carbon savings as well as much reduced total cost of ownership through longer life and low maintenance requirements. We chose Crescent Lighting as their range of retrofit-able LED panel solutions enabled them to not only offer all of these advantages along with much improved light quality, but also the versatility to re-use our existing light fittings as and where appropriate, therefore keeping installation costs to the minimum. Their LED panel products were also equally suitable for using in the new main office area.’

Up in lights HNS Signs has put a Midlands bar’s name in lights after a creative makeover for The Mailbox resident. Penny Blacks, one of Birmingham’s busiest waterfront bars took advantage of The Mailbox’s redevelopment phase, and called in interior design company Newman Gauge with the help of HNS Signs to spruce up its look. The bar now features a 14ft neon sign surrounded by 240 LED light bulbs. Nicola Roberts, general manager at Penny Blacks Wine & Ale House, said: ‘We love our current waterfront positioning, and with all the exciting redevelopments taking place at The Mailbox, we thought it would be a good time to refresh our own venue. ‘We love the new look and the neon and LED lighting piece is a real work of art. It was a joy to see come together and is certainly a talking point – who else has their name in 240 lights in The Mailbox?’

An app for that... Sylvania has partnered with Internet kickstarter sensation, LIFX to offer a pioneering lighting technology. Distributed by Sylvania, LIFX believes it is ‘re-inventing the light bulb as we know it with a Wi-Fi enabled, multicolour, energy efficient LED lamp that can be controlled via a smartphone’. Whether it is to have a splash of colour to create moods or scenes in a room, or to find the right white light to meet specific needs, LIFX offers both domestic and commercial users 16 million colours at their fingertips and allows a variety of different scenes to be set to suit moods and tasks. Using a free App (iOS or Android versions), users can

control the colour, brightness and dimming level of their LIFX lamps, as well as create scenes. New features of the app are being added all the time; Music Visualiser enables the lights to interact with music, and soon the LIFX app will enable a host of features, including alarm-linked automatic control, and, using LIFX Cloud, the lamps will be controllable from anywhere in the world. ‘At Havells Sylvania, we are pleased to be working with LIFX, the company is a great example of an entrepreneurial and creative start-up that pushes the boundaries of design and performance in lighting,’ comments Christian Schraft,

president of Havells Sylvania Europe. ‘It is through partnerships like these that our customers will continue to benefit from the world-class solutions they’ve come to expect from us.’ Potential uses for the lamp include a system whereby it can wake you up in the morning, deliver notifications, or even ward off intruders with a patent-pending security mode. For instance, a lamp could be set as a white light that blinks green when you get a notification on your smartphone, or to blink when someone rings the doorbell. The LIFX lamp is easy to install; it is just a case of replacing existing lamps with the LIFX bulb.

ENERGY EFFICIENT

A Cautionary tale

Gary Chan and Henning von Lepel, application engineers at WL Gore & Associates, discuss smart seals to extend the service life of luminaires

L

ED luminaires for exterior applications must be robust enough to withstand a variety of environmental conditions. An effective solution to these challenges can be intelligent seals: on the one hand, they prevent the ingress of water and contaminants; on the other, they allow pressure to equalise in both directions. Modern venting systems can do both – and greatly increase the service life of LED luminaires. Increasingly, standard neon tubes and energy-saving lamps are being replaced by LEDs. With a service life of up to 100,000 hours, these lamps are extremely reliable and environmentally friendly. However, to achieve this service life, housings must be sufficiently robust to protect the electronic components from damage. This is why the housing is sealed against water and contaminants. But changes in outdoor temperature cause the air pressure within the housing to fluctuate constantly, which in turn puts either positive or negative pressure on the seals, and compromises their effectiveness. Over time, seals begin to allow water and contaminants to enter the

housing, which can lead to corrosion, shorts, and potential failure of the electronics. In addition, condensation on the inside of the luminaire can impact on the quality of its light.

MANY CAUSES – ONE EFFECT

Changes in outdoor temperature are one of the most common causes of pressure differentials. These changes can be sudden, for instance a strong thunderstorm on a hot summer day, or more gradual over the course of the day or of the year. Either way, they put significant stress on the seals. What’s more, direct sunlight can often cause the air inside the LED luminaire to rapidly heat up, with the resulting higher pressure putting positive pressure on the seals. As temperatures drop again at night, the internal air contracts and creates a gentle vacuum, which draws the seals inward. A quick drop in temperature can create a vacuum of up to 150 mbar inside the luminaire, while a 30°C change in temperature creates approximately 10 per cent of volumetric flow of air in or out in a non-hermetically sealed enclosure.

Although LEDs do not get as hot as incandescent lamps, switching a luminaire on and off nonetheless results in significant temperature fluctuations Pressure differentials are also caused by temperature changes within LED luminaires. Although LEDs do not get as hot as incandescent lamps, switching a luminaire on and off nonetheless results in significant temperature fluctuations. These are at their strongest immediately after switching, which means that switching luminaires on and off repeatedly puts not only the electronics, but also the seals, under considerable strain. Also, the effects of altitude changes are underestimated. Of course, it makes no difference whether LED luminaires are fitted on the roof of a building or in the garden. But the luminaire must first be shipped to where it will be used. Since production sites are spread around the world, manufacturers often ship their products to distributors by air –often involving several intermediate stops. This means LED luminaires are exposed to the difference in pressure between a little over 1,000 mbar at ground level and 800 850 mbar in the aircraft. Another common cause of pressure differentials is thermal shock. This occurs when a hot LED luminaire is sprayed with cold water - from a garden hose, for instance - or when a cold luminaire is washed with hot water. It can also arise when a luminaire encounters snowfall.

LONG TERM STUDY OF PRESSURE DIFFERENTIALS IN ELECTRONIC HOUSINGS

Over a period of five years, pressure differentials were recored in five housings.

EQUALISING PRESSURE WHILE PROTECTING AGAINST WATER AND CONTAMINANTS The challenge for maintaining constant pressure inside a luminaire is to allow air to flow freely in and out, while blocking water and contaminants. Labyrinth seals are out of the question, as they are completely permeable to particles, insects, and water. However, hermetically sealing the device with more rugged seals, additional bolts, thicker housings or potting compounds requires the use of non-permeable materials and is unacceptably expensive. What’s more, it makes the device heavier, extremely difficult to open under negative pressure, and repair almost impossible. Installing a felt element, sintered vent, or mechanical valve is another alternative. The first two options address the pressure differentials, but they can become blocked by water and contaminants. And the mechanical valve is a one-way solution from inside to outside, which means it cannot prevent a vacuum. Gore’s solution is a vent made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). A two-way breathable membrane continuously equalises pressure inside the luminaire housing, while preventing the ingress of water and contaminants. The microporous membrane can be coated to

provide oleophobicity. ePTFE’s node-andfibril microstructure is open enough to allow gas molecules and vapour to pass through it easily, but the openings are so small that liquid and other particulates are repelled. One potentially important consideration is how to deal with hydrogen sulfide. This is given off especially by inexpensive EPDM seals produced using sulfur vulcanisation, where the vulcanisation action did not bond all the sulfur atoms. IMPACT OF PRESSURE ON VENTED AND UNVENTED HOUSINGS

RELATIVE HUMIDITY IN VENTED AND UNVENTED HOUSINGS

TYPICAL CALCULATION

Pressure differential in a housing with 5 litres of free air volume caused by a temperature drop from 65oC to 15oC in 11 minutes

-6.9 mbar when switched off. However, the vented luminaire showed a change of only ±0.69 mbar. Comparing the relative humidity inside the LED luminaires after a standard IPX5 water ingress test, demonstrates the significance of pressure differentials. The relative humidity in the sealed luminaire was significantly higher than in the vented luminaire. Over the course of ten days, the relative humidity in the sealed luminaire almost always remained at around 100 per cent. This indicated condensation inside the luminaire caused by water entering during the test. A further test, conducted outdoors south of Munich, during a period of five years, demonstrated the longer service life of vented enclosures. Five units were tested: two with no vents, one with a side vent, one with a top vent, and one with two vents (one on each side). The testing showed that the pressure differential in the unvented units ranged from -150 mbar in both, to 131 and 147 mbar respectively. A significant amount of condensation was also detected. In the vented units, the maximum pressure measurements fell to ±40 mbar with a top vent, ±30 mbar with a side vent, and just ±4 mbar with both vents. This is an impressive demonstration of how effective these venting systems are at equalising pressure. In addition, no condensation was detected, and neither was the ingress of water or dust. Further testing showed that the vents were fully functional even after five years’ outdoor operation.

CONCLUSION nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), or other components containing sulfur, can also give off hydrogen sulfide. This substance causes corrosion in luminaire components such as silver-plated lead-frames, which impacts electrical contacts with the wire bond or die bond.

COMPREHENSIVE PRACTICAL TESTING: A SUCCESS

Equalising pressure using an ePTFE vent reduces the potential for moisture vapour to condense on lenses and reflectors, and increases the service life of seals. This has been demonstrated by thorough testing to compare two commercially available LED luminaires; one conventionally sealed unit, and one with an additional ePTFE vent. Although the on/off cycle of both luminaires caused temperatures to rise and fall, the amount of pressure placed on the seals is significantly different. In the sealed luminaire, the pressure spiked by 6.2 mbar when the light was switched on and dipped

Pressure differentials compromise housing seals. Not taking this into account when designing LED luminaires can reduce the service life of LEDs, power supply drivers and other electronics. The ingress of water through damaged seals also leads to condensation on lenses and reflectors that can decrease light efficiency and the aesthetic quality of the luminaire. As demonstrated through the IPX5 test, integrating an ePTFE vent into the housing equalises pressure by allowing continuous airflow in both directions and preventing the ingress of water. What’s more, the vent reduces condensation because moisture vapour is able to escape from the luminaire before condensing. HAL LED + 44 (0) 191 586 3511 www.clare.co.uk/HALLED Power ahead to improved LED testing using the Clare HAL Power measurement of less than 1000W with a resolution of 200Mw is available to LED manufacturers using the most advanced low power multifunction tester available, the HAL LED. Available from Clare (www.clare.co.uk/HALLED), the tester delivers better resolution at low power to offer greater control of the output of products under test, ensuring improved accuracy and quality control standards during manufacturing. The availability of the HAL LED comes at a time of emphasis on climate change, with companies focused on sourcing ‘greener’ alternatives. For manufacturers the challenge is to ensure that they are producing product that performs as efficiently as possible. Improved resolution at lower power allows a manufacturer to ensure that the quality control aspect of a functional test is within acceptable limits and the product is shipped with the knowledge that it is as efficient as expected. Using the HAL LED, manufacturers can complete end of line tests with the additional benefit of full functionality testing of the operation of the equipment. It also enables users to meet the safety compliance requirements for the majority of standards BS EN 60598 which covers the safety of lighting equipment such as lamp holders, lights and fluorescent lights.

POWER SHOUTAGE

An energy-saving lighting solution for an electricity sub-station in an iconic location

T

he site of the sub-station, in Matthew Street, is one of Liverpool’s most vibrant nightlife destinations, and just a few metres from the famous Cavern Club. Each year thousands of tourists visit the venue where The Beatles regularly played during the early part of their career. ACSP was tasked with creating an energy friendly, architectural lighting solution to help bring the sub-station to life at night, in line with its lively surroundings.

Led by project manager, Lance Bromhead, the ACSP team specified a selection of low maintenance, energy efficient lighting products, including Pulsar ChromaFlood 200 LED wash fixtures, Pharos control, Griven GoboClip MK3 fixtures, and an assortment of custom-made gobos, used to project themed logos and images around the space. As the installation is outdoors, Bromhead needed to ensure that all of the lighting equipment would stand up to the elements, so he specified IP65and IP66-rated products. Working closely with Pulsar, he arranged for all of the ChromaFlood 200 units to be custom-fitted with IP65-rated wireless DMX capabilities, in order to reduce cabling and installation costs, and simplify the system requirements. To fulfil SPEN’s brief for a low maintenance solution, Bromhead chose a Pharos LPC1 Lighting Playback Controller, with a built in astronomical clock, which was preprogrammed to run at certain times of the day. Based on the new LED lighting system’s reduced number of fixtures

and lower power consumption, compared to the original discharge lamps system, it is estimated that the LED technology will reduce the sub-station’s lighting carbon footprint by up to 80 per cent. John Heathman, distribution programmes manager at SPEN commented: ‘Scottish Power Energy Networks are very pleased with the energy efficient lighting solution that ACSP supplied for the ScottishPower Substation on Mathew Street, Liverpool. ‘ACSP explained the project options in great detail, as well as demonstrating the fixtures prior to installation. The lighting installation has dramatically enhanced this facility at night, helping it to blend in with the world-famous street’s vibrant nightlife.’

CREATING 21ST CENTURY LIGHTING TH IN AN 18 CENTURY SETTING Installing modern day lighting in a Grade II listed building is always going to be a challenge

This was the task that Matt Kelsing from Surrey based Lime Electrics faced when he won the contract to install external lighting at the 18th Century Old House, in the ancient Hampshire village of Crondall. As Crondall is within a conservation area, one of the biggest challenges facing Matt was supplying products that were sympathetic to the heritage of the area while responding to the needs of the 21st Century. As the ‘Old House’ retains much of its classical period features and mix of formal and informal gardens it was imperative that the external lighting scheme was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Matt turned to major UK LED manufacturer, Collingwood Lighting, to enable him to achieve this. As Matt says, “Once we had the design plan in place it was essential we were able to supply products that not only fulfilled the specification but also exceeded them. This is where Collingwood came in” He continued, “We knew we had to ensure total consistency in light output, longevity and most importantly, ease of installation and Collingwood ticked all the boxes. To start with the owners wanted clearly lit pathways but without obtrusive lighting columns” Collingwood’s Iroko bollard lights fitted the bill perfectly. At just 1m high, the three wide angle high powered 1W LEDs throw out a bright 110° pool of low level light and being ‘straight to mains’ are easy to install. Another consideration was to reinforce the tranquillity of the area, despite being less than

00.ad.collingwood.indd 1

35 miles from London. To emphasise this, Matt installed a number of Collingwood LED ground and wall lights, to highlight the many attractive exterior features. These included the GL038A ground light and GL034A hooded wall / ground lights – all direct to mains and all manufactured with a stainless steel facia for easy maintenance and longevity. Also, with such an array of garden features to be lit, flexibility is the name of the game; the reason for choosing Collingwood’s linear FL200 LED flood light. With a beam angle of 50° and 9 high powered LEDs the light is thrown over long distances, ideal for lighting trees. The FL200 has an anodised aluminium body and waterproof mains connectors making it weatherproof no matter where it’s positioned. Collingwood Lighting supplied all the products for the lighting scheme through CDR Electrical with installation by Lime Electrics CONTACT

This particular product manages to deliver a high quality of light without sacrificing performance in the process. This is surprisingly good – about 1.5 times that of a comparable T5-based luminaire. This luminaire achieves a high efficacy with a neutral white LED and, added to this, the colour rendering index of 81 percent make the LightSense® panel a logical solution for anybody looking to install a luminous ceiling.

Technical Director, Photometric and Optical Testing Services LLP tests an LED panel that has been designed to replace its fluorescent ceiling counterparts in offices and other commercial applications. Going under the microscope are its lumen output and its unified glare rating. To read the full article, visit: www.ledlightsense.co.uk/wp-content/ uploads/Photometry-Focus.pdf

HIGHLIGHT From car shows to TV shows PR Lighting’s initial brief when creating the LED Studio 3205D fitting was to develop a fixture purpose-designed for lighting up large-scale automobile shows around the world. However, with its inherent power, derived from a single 500W LED source, coupled with a stable colour temperature and high CRI, the high specification Studio 3205D makes it suitable for almost any large-scale application, particularly in TV studio, theatre, commercial and

multi-functional situations. In addition to its two available colour temperatures, the fitting boasts enviable energy levels, with luminous flux measurements of 9000 lumens (43°) and 17500 lumens (71°), and a CRI of 90 further enhancing the vivid colours. Additionally, the LED Studio 3205D contains a 0-100 per cent linearly adjustable DMX dimmer, linear motorised zoom and electronic strobe, with flexible beam angle from 43-71 degrees further boosting its versatility. Housed in a high intensity, aluminium chassis, the fixture is designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -20°C to +40°C.

Tower de force UK lighting and visuals rental specialist, HSL supplied equipment for a bold, vibrant interactive lighting installation work, Control t’force, which was created by lighting designer, James Bawn to illuminate the 330m-high Emley Moor Mast in West Yorkshire. As the tallest freestanding structure in the UK, the mast is an iconic local landmark, and the main UHF transmitter for most of the county. Specially commissioned by TG Events on behalf of Kirklees Council as part of ‘Hypervelocity’, the five-daylong grand finale of the 2014 Yorkshire Festival, the Control t’force project also celebrated the start of the 2014 Tour de France in Yorkshire. Bawn has been involved in architectural lighting projects for the Council, and when his ideas for lighting the mast received the green light, he immediately turned to Simon Stuart and Mike

Oates at Blackburn-based HSL to provide the equipment and additional expertise. Stuart said: ‘We were really excited to be involved and to help James realise such a stunning and inventive idea that made history, as the first time the tower has ever been fully lit … and was enjoyed by so many people!’

Love of colour The foundation Universal Brotherhood has chosen SGM’s G-Spot LED moving head for the Sant Nirankari Mission Fountain of Worship in India. Lawrence Ryan of Eagle Eye Studios was tasked with designing and programming a show control interface for the beautiful fountain in Delhi, known as the Fountain of Oneness. As a centerpiece to the fountain, a sphere represents the world, denoting worldwide unity. Situated inside a huge pool area with many water fountains, lighting effects add a further dimension to the frequent music shows. As lighting designer, Lawrence Ryan envisioned a full interface for the operators to easily test and manually run all the lighting and fountains in the venue, while also choreographing an entire show using Medialon record DMX features and a Jands Vista lighting controller. A composed piece of music, incorporating the Guru talking with beautiful vocal sections, and the deployment of 12 SGM G-Spot moving heads offer the feeling of spirituality through sound and light. ‘Initially I was looking for standard intelligent lighting effects from moving head units, but I ended up with something really quite special, and was truly impressed with the colours and movement of the units, commented Ryan. The choice had been unambiguous once the IP65 all-weather moving head was presented. ‘SGM had just launched the product and I was the first to get delivery of these very special units,’ he continued. Besides the IP rating, finding a fixture based on LED technology has clear benefits: ‘The LED output moves us away from the conventional lamp and ballast set-up, which hopefully will give a much better life span for the units.’ The 12 G-Spots are placed on the edge of the water feature. With a square pool area segmented into four, three units are located at the edge of each area, providing a broad spectrum of bright colours across the fountain.

band, and the first time that Woodroffe has used them for a major concert touring show. The Pointes were used extensively thought the show to create high impact washes, gobo looks and big beam effects shooting right out into the audience.

WBD design associate, Terry Cook explained that the team particularly liked the brightness, linear prism, zoom and the ability for the unit to be swapped between a beam and a spot fixture. They also proved very reliable both during the rehearsal

period and on the road. The 14 On Fire European tour opened in Oslo and finished on the final night of the 2014 Roskilde festival in Denmark, completing 14 shows in a combination of arenas, stadiums and festivals, for which they had nine active versions of the lighting rig.

EVENT

The annual TL preview of Tent, Decorex, 100% Design, and designjunction

T

his month there are more design events taking place in the Capital than tourists in Trafalgar Square, and the good news is that it’s looking set to be a bumper year for the lighting element of each of the shows. Collectively, London Design week is a celebration of all thing design-oriented, so in order to make the choice of what to see, and when, we’ve taken some of the hard work out of it by looking at some of the best offerings from Tent, Decorex, 100% Design and last but not least, designjunction - which again this year will incorporate the show within a show, lightjunction. Each of the four events has a lighting element that’s comprehensive enough to make

them a worthwhile destination, although lightjunction is the only dedicated lighting show. Deborah Spencer, show director says: ‘‘For us, the expansion of lightjunction, and taking over the basement for the first time is a really exciting development. ‘It has allowed us to bring even more contemporary and decorative lighting brands into the show, alongside some hugely impressive installations – this year from Jake Dyson and Blackbody. The basement will also be a central information point for lighting designers, specifiers, interior designers and architects seeking expert advice on decorative lighting from Cameron Peters Fine Lighting.’ William Knight, show director, 100% Design is anticipating a great week: ‘We have a very exciting show coming up this September. Lighting continues to be one of the fastest growing sectors in our industry, and this is certainly reflected by the increasing number of our lighting exhibitors year-on-year. We have secured some exciting names this year; British rising star Naomi Paul will bring her

signature hand-crocheted, spun pendants to the show, while Argentina-based Weplight will showcase its sculpturally formed lighting collection, using flexible wood veneers. Also expect to see companies including Delightfull, Original BTC, Davey Lighting and Mullan Lighting. ‘In addition, we’re delighted to be working with the Lighting Industry Association on their young lighting design competition, Delight in Light. ‘The show’s editorial content remains strong this year, as you will find engaging features and installations across the show, providing social spaces, thought provoking ideas and plenty of opportunities to come into contact with new ideas and expertise. As a dramatic opener to all of this, the first installation you will see at 100% Design 2014 is the Ice Chandelier by Daniel Libeskind for Czech brand Lasvit. ‘In the past 12 months, we’ve seen industrial-style lighting being overwhelmingly popular. Looking forward, a key trend will be lighting that focuses on more than just functionality. For visitors hoping to take in more than one event, Tent is being held at The Old Truman Brewery in E1, designjunction – and lightjunction - will be at The Old Sorting Office, New Oxford Street, 100% Design remains for one last year at Earls Court, and Decorex has made the move to Syon Park, so theoretically, you could take in them all in a day! www.tlmagazine.co.uk • S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 4 • 45

TENT, LONDON W H E R E : Old Truman Brewery, London E1 W H E N : 18-21 September 2014 W H AT : ‘One venue. Two shows. Two floors of pure design’

Show overview Visit to find extraordinary interiors products from 40 global design brands and more than 200 established independents and undiscovered talents; alongside spectacular feature installations, inspirational talks and seminars; and presentations from country pavilions.

What they say East London is now firmly established as the most creative and forward thinking design destination of all, with Tent London at The Old Truman Brewery at its heart. Tent London’s exhibitors provide an ideal showcase for the world-class design that can be found in East London. Labels that started small when Tent London was launched eight years ago are now fully established and continue to grow. These brands continue to return, reflecting the show’s role as the central hub for this design district and beyond. Recognising that a presence in East London is essential to the development of their brands, an impressive roster of big design labels are now investing in retail space in the district and showing at Tent London’s sister show, Super Brands London.

What to see Alp (Stand F11) is a design studio led by swiss-born, London-based interior architect, Annick L Petersen, who has

worked in residential, hotel and furniture design for more than 15 years. The range includes furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories with a contemporary, functional and classic style. On Stand H06, the young New York-based studio created by Ariane van Dievoet, Avandi features designs for young urban nomads, who constantly move from one place to the next and have to make the most of small spaces. Lightly by Avandi The Lightly series explores the geometry of light with the use of a small pyramid lit from within. Lightly is easy to fit to the ceiling without dealing with wiring and heavy drilling. Out of the box, it is easy to assemble and place. The colourful wire is used as a connection between the different light tracks, as well as a suspension cable. Dechem Studio (Stand No. K05) was established in 2012 by Michaela Tomiskova and Jakub Jandourek. They met at Novy Bor School of Glass. Since establishing Dechem studio, they have focused on product design and always paid special attention to glass, traditional bohemian craft techniques, and surprising connections of its various forms. The Hadovka Lamp is a table lamp concept connecting two specific kinds of glass in an archetypal shade. Delicate and technical borosilicate glass meets genuine crystal.

Lightweight and transparent laboratory glass contrasts with the smokey metal coated glass shade. Its full glass design allows one to admire all the technical details inside the lamp. On Stand F33, Fred&Juul’s designs are inspired by old customs and techniques and characterised by the use of solid materials, like iron, brass and reclaimed oak. All pieces are entirely handcrafted by highly skilled artisans in Tuscany. Raffaele is based on the combination of brass, and the simple idea that stars are the quintessence of light, capable of filling us with awe when gazing up at a clear night sky. The result is a brass lampshade in the form of a three-dimensional falling star, sand-casted in one piece by highly specialised Tuscan craftsmen. Tamma Design, on Stand H14, was founded by Johanna Tammsalu, a young designer from Tallinn, Estonia. The Solid Spin Lamp idea grew out of a series of experiments with simple everyday objects. These experiments consisted in taking slow aperture pictures of spinning objects like shoes, keys and sunglasses to create new shapes. The results were fragile and butterfly-like shapes that gave the illusion of suppleness and movement. tentlondon.co.uk

BALLOON

MOON

Dreaming up something a little different for lighting the Paris Tour Auto event

A

irstar was selected to animate the majestic nave of the Grand Palais in Paris with dramatic lighting for the twenty-third edition of the Tour Auto Optic 2ooo. More than 5,000 visitors queued to admire 250 classic racing cars registered for the legendary race, which recalls the golden age of driving luxury cars. The company used 15 lighting balloons from Airstar’s Lunix range for various purposes, including decoration, space filling, lighting and signage. With a diameter ranging between two and two and a half metres, each helium-filled balloon contained two 1kW halogen lamps, with one exception: a gigantic 10m-wide balloon suspended in the middle of the nave – the biggest space in the Grand Palais – was used to display the logo of the event and its main sponsor. Containing much larger, 40kW halogen lamps, it was used to illuminate a 4,000sq

m zone with natural, non-dazzling light. The central balloon had both an aesthetic and functional role during the day, taking over when ambient lighting wasn’t sufficient. In the evening, it really stole the show, becoming a feature in its own right. The balloon was used to great effect for the VIP launch party, which hosted 6,000 celebrities and former race drivers, lighting up the Grand Palais nave and its surroundings, while simultaneously highlighting the event logo and its main sponsor. Edouard de Saint Olive, purchase and logistics manager at event organiser, Peter Auto said: ‘Airstar benefits from a reputation in the event industry, and we were convinced by the quality of their products and services from day one. We didn’t have to make any tests or trials, and were fully satisfied with the end result. ‘The visitors, as well as the sponsors, and even the racing

drivers, gave us a very positive feedback about the lighting as well as the look and feel.’ Although the quality of the lighting played an important role - in particular for the VIP party - the sheer volume of the Airstar spheres was dominant. With 77.000sq m of space, and a 45m high dome, filling the space was indeed essential. ‘The volume of the balloons helped us to visually fill in the nave and create a striking effect within a reasonable budget,’ confirmed de Saint Olive. Thierry Lavau, Airstar sales manager for the Paris region added: ‘Keywords for the Lunix range are efficiency and simplicity. Because they are very easy to install and dismantle, they don’t create any constraint and avoid using heavy equipment, an undisputable advantage for events such as the Tour Auto Optic 2ooo. On top of offering a natural and homogeneous light, Lunix dresses up a space, and this is the reason why our products are a perfect match in venues such as the Grand Palais.’

RETAIL

HIGHLIGHT Make a statement Lumiance has reached new levels of originality with the launch of Optimo. Designed to deliver the optimum creativity, Optimo perfectly complements high street and pop-up shop interiors as well as hospitality and supermarket applications, to provide a luminaire that remains a step ahead of trends in today’s fast-paced retail spaces. Available in various colour and size options the versatile fitting has the added benefit of Sylvania’s best-in-class lamp technology. Designers, specifiers and end-users can create a consistent aesthetic across a whole project whilst ensuring the right light choices are used; LED for energy-efficiency and performance, HID for reduced maintenance and wow factor or halogen for fast, simple replacement and true colour. Optimo has a two-tone colour combination on the body and trim, which is fully changeable depending on the project requirements. The spotlights are available in three standard colours – matte white, matte black and silver all with a black heatsink – or custom colours as required.

Sporting challenge

Using its 910 lighting routers to control DALI luminaires in the Nike Factory store in Norwich, Helvar has provided a complete lighting control system that enables quick switching between six different scenarios. Across the store, four 910 routers were installed – each carries two DALI lines, with each line being equipped to control up to 64 points. The routers allow for ‘individual intelligence’ meaning a series of lighting scenes can be remotely selected via the touch panel, which is connected via an Ethernet cable too. The pre-programmed lighting scenarios include: base, shop open, night safety, all luminaires at 100%, all luminaires off, and an optional slider, which allows for dimming up or down, according to the track that each set is connected to. For complete control, all DALI luminaires can also be individually dimmed up or down, by selecting separate lines; this is especially useful in a retail environment as this allows for lighting levels to

be altered in various areas of the store and can be used to highlight promotional offers or areas of specific interest. Peter Hegarty, associate from Child Graddon Lewis Architects & Designers, commented: ‘From a lighting perspective, the key priority was to ensure that the lighting system was fully controllable. Helvar was able to provide a dimmable solution that would enable a mid setting – the lighting system can be set to turn on at around 50 per cent when cleaners enter the building for example, with the system rising to 100 per cent operation later in the morning. In this way, the Nike Factory store would also benefit from a reduction in both energy use and associated costs. ‘Having exceeded the requirements laid out under LEED standards, whereby at least 60 per cent of a building’s lighting must be controllable via a mid setting, the project is expected to achieve LEED certification when it is tested.’

In the arms of Morpheus When a Dutch bed retailer upgraded the lighting scheme in its Utrecht store, Megaman’s LED AR111 reflector range was selected to provide cost and energy savings as well as a welcoming ambiance. David Minco of retailer, Morpheus commented: ‘Although we take the business of sleep very seriously, we like to make our showrooms as accessible and welcoming as possible to a wide range of customers. Our aim is to create aspirational, yet welcoming room layouts that demonstrate the design potential of bedrooms and guestrooms.’ With this in mind, the owners were looking for ways to revitalise and refresh the Morpheus store in Utrecht. Local specialists from Rexel explored the possibility of upgrading the lighting to more energy efficient alternatives. Minco continued: ‘We were concerned that any lighting upgrade needed to maintain the warmth and drama that we have in our stores. Also, we have a wide range of soft furnishings that need to be lit with minimal UV impact to avoid them discolouring.’ Using existing luminaires and tracks, 200 LED AR111 11W G53 24° 2800K reflectors were used to replace the original, inefficient 50W halogen light sources. Because the selected range can be used with the majority of AC/DC12V halogen transformers, the installation team were able to minimise store down time, by u sing the existing transformers and simply replacing the lamps.

Boasting of brilliance UK lighting retailer, BLT Direct has expanded its range of GE lamps to offer its customers more choice. With the new range, which includes compact fluorescents, halogens, fluorescent tubes and metal halides, BLT Direct believes it is the

‘go-to’ supplier of GE lighting products for all scenarios. Steven Ellwood, MD of BLT Direct explained: ‘When it comes to GE light bulbs, you can be sure of receiving a top quality product, which will last the test of time. We wanted to offer our

customers more from this consistently exceptional brand that continues to impress time and time again. Whether it’s for domestic, commercial or industrial use, we have a GE product to suit a huge range of unique lighting needs.’

e’ve all done it; missed the last fuel stop for 150 miles. So I suspect we all recognise the feeling, as thoughts of a seventeen-mile trudge in the rain turn to pure relief at the sight of a neon-bright canopy on the side of the road that heralds safety and the continuation of your journey. An awful lot of thought has gone into making petrol stations, complete with the attendant ‘comfort facilities’ and convenience stores, into welcoming places to stop.

And of course, being open 24/7 means all facilities must be fully lit day and night too. MRH(GB) was spending an eye-watering £300,000 lighting its 350 UK forecourts every year, so when npower suggested a way to make potential savings of 90 per cent, the company jumped at the chance. The energy supplier’s solution was to replace ageing incandescent lamps in the canopies with LEDs. A survey of 4,000 lamps was undertaken across the sites to

determine required lighting levels before the selection of Philips’ Mini 300 was made. They are used in combination with Philips’ integral motion detector video sensors to dim lights when they aren’t needed at full output. John Lynn, MD at MRH, commented: ‘When we began looking at the different energy saving options available, we realised that there was the potential to make significant reductions. The fact we’re looking at savings of nearly 90 per cent is amazing, and demonstrates how relatively easy it is to implement simple changes, which can make a big difference. npower worked closely with us throughout the project to ensure that the installation is well-designed and delivered on time. From our initial meetings, through to the design and specifying stage and now installation, we have valued their service and flexibility, given the size of the project.’ Gary Amos, business development manager at npower, added: ‘npower installation teams are specialists, qualified to work in environments with potential explosive gases and fuel vapours, backed

up with team leaders that have specific accreditation for working in petrol stations. ‘This installation project will produce significant savings for MRH, with pay back likely to be within two to three years. The savings brought about by LED lighting will be felt for years to come, so MRH has made a strong strategic decision in reducing both energy use and operating costs long term.’

GREENER GARAGES

The astronomical cost of keeping a roadside welcome is a problem that EuroGarages has also faced - and is addressing thanks to an LED lighting solution from One Electrical. EuroGarages has 181 fuel stations and motorway services across the North West and Midlands. To date, 15 have been converted to LED lighting, and the company is so convinced of the benefits that intends to convert its entire portfolio as part of a full environmental and overhead reduction programme. Mohammed Patel, utilities manager at EuroGarages explained: ‘Lighting accounts for 40 per cent of our

total electricity cost at a typical fuel station, which is a significant part of our monthly bill for each property, and our carbon footprint. ‘The savings we are making by switching to LED means that we can achieve an eleven-month payback period, and then continue to benefit from reduced operational costs indefinitely.’ The Circle service station in Manchester is typical of locations EuroGarages’ has converted. Last refurbished 20 years ago, the lighting was inefficient, unattractive and maintenance hungry. Since changing to LED, lighting costs have reduced from £1,120 per month to just £504. To minimise disruption, One Electrical provided like-for-like LED panel lights, downlights, directional display lights, canopy lights and floodlights, all installed within just three days. Additionally, forty 36W LED slimline recessed panels were installed in the forecourt shop and backof-house areas. The panel lighting is complemented by downlights in the cash desk area and directional display lights. Externally, 100W forecourt canopy lights, designed for fuel station installation, were installed. Featuring CREE LED chips and MEANWELL enclosed drivers, the IP65-rated fittings are designed to reduce maintenance, improve user safety, and reduce energy consumption while coping with heavy use and all weather conditions. Patel added: ‘Safety on the forecourt is very important to us. Because we run a 24-hour operation, it’s essential that customers can see clearly to refuel and remain safe at our sites. The high lumen level offered by these fittings delivers those aims. ‘Many of our sites are in residential areas too, however, so the natural light and 100-degree beam angle ensure we act responsibly in terms of light pollution.’

EXPERT IN THE FIELD

Philips has done a lot of work in this area, evidenced by two recent installations in The Netherlands and Denmark. In Tilburg, Holland, Philips worked with BP to create the country’s first all-LED lit petrol station. In order to create a pleasant and green destination for drivers, Joost van Aardenne, asset manager at BP Europe knew it was time for some radical thinking: ‘We wanted to significantly improve the customer experience - but not at the cost of the environment. Another priority was to reduce the station’s energy consumption. Philips Lighting has supported us by sharing their expertise and experience in lighting. That is how we ended up with the LED concept. This is the first petrol station illuminated entirely by LED lighting!’

LED lighting also provides significant advantages outside. ‘The awning lights dim when there are no customers, and brighten when a customer drives up,’ added van Aarenne. ‘This not only results in tremendous cost savings, but also gives customers a greater sense of safety.’ In Denmark, Philips’ technology has been used during a recent upgrade of 90 Q8 petrol stations with ‘Qvik to go’ convenience stores. ‘It was important that our energy savings were real and sustainable,’ explained architect, Morten Uttrup, project manager at Q8. ‘The aim right from the start was to achieve a 10 per cent reduction in electricity consumption.’ Tagensvej in Copenhagen was selected as a test site. Together with MASTER LEDbulb 24W lamps in StyliD LED spots for interior use, and CitySwan fittings with MASTER LEDbulb 8W lamps outdoors, a daylight management system, which measures the outside light levels and automatically adjusts the lighting, was included. ‘As far as the lighting is concerned, payback on investment will be realised in about three years,’ continued Uttrup.’ And that will be purely based on savings in consumption. In addition, there will be the long-term benefit from the 50,000hour lifecycle of the MASTER LEDbulbs, equivalent to up to eight years burning time in the shops. That’s about five times longer than traditional bulbs!’ CON TACT npower www.npower.com Philips Lighting www.philips.com/lighting One Electrical www.oneelectrical.com

ONE M FOR THE ROAD

Roadchef sees a reduction in operating costs after a lighting upgrade at Strensham Services

HA Lighting has saved the motorway service area operator, Roadchef a whopping 70 per cent on lighting costs at one of its biggest services. The challenge came about when Roadchef decided to refurbish the northbound petrol forecourt at its busy Strensham motorway service area, which is owned by Chevron Texaco. MHA Lighting’s LED technology has been in use at the site since September 2010, so it was natural to complete the lighting upgrade with the help of MHA. A total of 86 under canopy LED fittings at 82W each, were installed to replace an equivalent number of 250W metal halides. It is believed that the change to LED will reduce Co2 emissions at the site by 585 tonnes over the product lifetime. The metal halide lamps were one of the biggest overheads for Roadchef, so with prospective energy savings of 70 per cent plus 60,000 hours’ of maintenance free use, this latest installation is expected to make big savings over its12 year lifespan – based on average operation of 14 hours a day, seven days a week. MHA’s canopy range is available with both symmetrical and asymmetrical reflectors. This means flexible lighting design, allowing light

to be directed back down onto the forecourt, instead of causing light pollution around the service stop. Other benefits include enhances retailing opportunities through better illumination and an improved sense of safety and security for customers, as Roadchef CEO, Simon Tul has found out. ‘We are delighted with the result of MHA Lighting’s recent installation, which will help us provide clean and consistent illumination in our refurbished forecourt,’ he said. ‘The quality of the LED lights also improves safety and security at the forecourt, by making our CCTV images much clearer. ‘MHA Lighting completed the project quickly and with minimal disruption to our business, which, because of the volume of customers using Strensham, was absolutely essential,’ Tul added.

HIGHLIGHT Citizen switch

Wiring accessories specialist, Legrand, has helped to deliver the funky, contemporary look being pioneered by hotel chain, citizenM at its Bankside venue in London. Billed as a new breed of hotels with properties in London, Glasgow and Amsterdam, citizenM hotels feature trendy rooms with extra large beds, rain showers and Wi-Fi access. Designed for domestic guests

and overseas travellers alike, citizenM boasts an international plug system in every room and Legrand supplied a wide range of sockets, push buttons, switches, USB outlets and data sockets from its Arteor range to complement the contemporary interior styling. The modular nature of the range enabled the hotel chain to choose a combination of finishes that blend with the hotel’s interior scheme. citizenM selected ‘Magnesium’ interiors with Arteor’s contrasting stainless steel surround plates. The company also requested that the function of each switch or push button be engraved onto the rocker and Legrand custom-engraved more than 1,500 units in response to the brief.

Student’s cheap chic Dichroic film from 3M has been used to create stunning colour shift lighting effects by design student, Lisa Alcock, for an exhibit at the New Designers show at London’s Business Design Centre. According to Alcock, 3M dichroic film had a dramatic influence on her final year project. ‘I discovered the dichroic film at 100% Design last year, and it has enabled me to produce the wonderful light and colour effects I had envisaged but struggled to create cost effectively,’ she explained. ‘My window panels, light boxes and jewellery have been created at a fraction of the cost of similar glass and acrylic materials. ‘The film has been amazingly simple to work with and gives my work beautiful textured light responsive surfaces which can be used in a wide variety of installations.’

Tobin’s choice When San Antonio’s Tobin Center for the Performing Arts opens in September its H-E-B Performance Hall and Alvarez Family Studio Theater will feature Robert Juliat Cyrano and Buxie followspots. The 1,750-seat, multi-purpose venue will be home to the San Antonio Symphony and other resident companies. The four-level H-E-B Performance Hall is the largest performance space; it has four Cyrano 2500W HMI followspots, with a narrow beam angle that makes them the perfect fixture for long throw distances. The Alvarez Family Studio Theater is a black box-style space with multiple seating arrangements; it has a pair of Buxie 575W MSD ultracompact followspots, which deliver a powerful punch in a small package. Technical director, Stefan De Wilde was familiar with Robert Juliat from his tenures with Disney and Cirque du Soleil so was confident to select the followspots, stating ‘they were the industry standard for top-of-theline fixtures’. He continued: ‘They were the most flexible, lightweight units with high output and extremely high quality. The Tobin Center is booked through 2017, so these lights will get a lot of use. We need products that will hold up under a lot of use and still provide a beautiful, powerful output of light.’

Glasgow-bound Robe was selected to supply more than 500 lighting fixtures for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The company worked with lighting designer, Tim Routledge - lead lighting programmer for the London 2012 Olympic

opening and closing ceremonies - on the high profile project. The fixtures selected to shine in Glasgow included Pointes, CycFX, LEDWash 600s, LEDBeam 100s, and the recently released LEDBeam 1000, together with Robe’s latest LightWare battery up-lighters.

It is important to measure light and lux levels in the workplace because low light levels may cause fatigue, muscle strain, and impaired work productivity MEASUREMENTS COUNT

L

ight meters are not only for photographers and movie-makers. Today, they are an important part of the arsenal of lighting engineers, building services professionals, and facilities managers who want to be mindful of regulations. It is important to measure light and lux levels in the workplace because low light levels may cause fatigue, muscle strain, and impaired work productivity, while excessive light levels, glare and reflected light can and affect employees’ vision. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) specifies certain types of illuminance and lighting equipment for different work situations. The Health & Safety at Work Act of 1974 includes a duty to provide lighting to ensure that work can be done safely, and that the health and eyesight of employees is not put at risk. Regulation 8 of the Workplace Regulations Act 1992, covers lighting, including emergency lighting, and states that employers must ensure that the workplace has ample suitable lighting, with a preference for daylight where practicable.

Light meters will typically provide a luminance reading of either lux or footcandles. Lux, the European standard of light measurement, is a unit of illumination of one lumen on a square metre, which is one metre away from a uniform light source. Similarly the US foot-candle measurement standard is a unit of illumination on a square foot, one foot away from the light source. It corresponds to 10.76 lux. Recommended light levels start from 20 lux for public areas, up to 200,000 lux for prolonged and exacting visual tasks of small pieces at low contrast. Offices are somewhere in the middle at 250-500 lux, while supermarkets may need lighting levels to be nearer to 750 lux. A hospital operating theatre may necessitate up to 1,500 lux. In food production, over- or under-exposure to light means plants may not grow properly. Light meters also measure light pollution, a problem that becomes increasingly prevalent with more reliance on artificial light. Artificial light readings can be used to analyse light pollution levels near places like airports. In the right hands, they can also enhance working environments and save energy on unnecessary lighting.

BASIC LIGHT METERS

The TestSafe TSLM3 digital light meter is suitable for a variety of light sources including fluorescent, metal halide, high pressure sodium and incandescent. It can measure 100,000lux or 10,000 foot-candles with an accuracy of ±3%, has an adjustable backlight, and uses a silicon photodiode sensor with filter to calculate light readings. The Martindale LM92 Lux meter is designed for simple single-handed operation, with a backlit LCD display, peak hold, and data hold features. The function switch is set to the desired range of lux or foot-candle units. If the lux or foot-candle magnitude is not known, the switch is set to the highest range and reduced until a satisfactory reading is obtained. www.tlmagazine.co.uk • S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 4 • 75

The sensor head has a 1.5m cable to separate the operator from the measurement location, in order to avoid casting a shadow. For best accuracy, the measurement is repeated several times to ensure that the light source has remained stable. Martindale explains that in light measurement, the inverse-square law states that the illuminance at a point on a surface varies directly with the intensity of a point source, and inversely as the square of the distance between the source and the point. The cosine law states that the illuminance on any surface varies as the cosine of the angle of incidence: the angle between the normal to the surface and the direction of the incident light. The CIE photopic curve is an international standard for the colour response of the average human eye, and may be used to convert radiant energy into luminous (visible) energy.

INTERMEDIATE LIGHT METERS

In order to provide good quality lighting, luminous intensity in the workplace, including hospitals, offices or schools, has to fulfil specific minimum guidelines. The Testo 540 pocket light meter has a measurement range to 100,000 lux. The 540 has been designed specifically with a sensor

In order to provide good quality lighting, luminous intensity in the workplace, including hospitals, offices or schools, has to fulfil specific minimum guidelines

that is adapted to human eyes’ spectral sensitivity, making it suitable for measuring light intensity, and ensuring that light levels are safe. A button provides maximum and minimum values, and the device will operate for up to 200 hours on two AAA batteries. Data logging light meters continuously display a real-time measurement and download measurements to PCs or laptops to provide essential traceability. The Extech HD400 heavy-duty light meter has a built-in USB port for easy data transfer to computers, and a large backlit LCD display that makes it easy to see results. It also features a large measurement range across four ranges of 40, 400, 4,000 and 40,000 foot-candles or 400, 4,000, 40,000 and 400,000 lux, with basic accuracy of ±5% and resolution of 0.01 foot-candles or 0.1 lux. The HD400 uses a precision silicon photo diode and spectral response filter to maintain measurement accuracy. The device sensor is connected to the unit by a one-metre-long cable, to allow the user to position the sensor where it can get the best reading on its 40-segment bar graph display. Protected by a shockproof sheath in a compact case, the Chauvin Arnoux Physics Line CA811 light meter measures lighting levels by silicon photodiode to 20,000 lux on a 3½-digit display of 2,000 counts at a resolution of 0.01 lux and accuracy of ±3%. Featuring CIE spectral correction and incidence correction, it has a remote-controlled probe for all types of measurements.

ADVANCED LIGHT METERS

Moving to more advanced models, the Extech EA33 EasyView light meter with memory for storage of test data is a handheld, portable meter that can be used to gain accurate measurements of light to 100,000 lux within ±3% on multiple selectable parameters, even outdoors. It utilises luminous intensity (candela) calculations, and features a special ripple function that is designed to exclude the effects of stray light from the primary light source measurement on the overall measurement. It can store and recall up to 50 measurements, and includes relative or real-time clock stamp. Other features include time hold measurement, relative in absolute value or per cent deviation, and comparator function with high-low alarms. When the meter is turned on, the elapsed timer starts

and shows days/hours or minutes/ seconds, using a button to toggle the view. In addition to the normal mode of operation where light level is measured, the EA33 features five special modes: stray light inhibit, which cancels out stray light from the light under test; time hold, where the meter measures while the timer counts down; real time clock to set the day and time for the internal clock; integral illuminance luminous energy measurement based on the rate of flow of flux expressed in lumen-seconds; and comparator mode, where the meter compares its measurements to one high and one low limit. The EA33 can also measure any photometric quantity on a time-dependent basis. For example, the illuminance could be integrated over time to yield lux or foot-candle hours. As the sensor area is small, EA33 average mode can be used to measure the illuminance of larger surface areas, where up to 99 points can be averaged. The Testo 545 lux meter provides multi-point or timed mean calculation, the results of which it stores in up to 99 file locations, while a logger function allows up to 3,000 readings. It offers fast printed documentation on site. For all the bells and whistles, the Hioki 3664 optical power meter measures the light spectrum from Blue-Ray and High Definition DVD to near-infrared rays. Trumpeted as ‘an advanced optical power meter to meet next generation needs’, it is tool for R&D, manufacturing and equipment maintenance that incorporate laser light sources, such as DVD recorders, CD drives, copiers, and laser printers. Specifically designed for blue-violet optical lasers that have low dependency on the incidence angle and flat wave sensitivity characteristics over its 405nm bandwidth, the 3664 can be used for inspecting next generation optical pickup drive devices. Users choose from four different optical sensors according to wavelength and sensor structure to meet application requirements. With accuracy of ±5%, it is suitable for making and testing optical pickup devices in combination with one of the sensors. With a wavelength setting resolution up to 1nm, up to 10 wave length memory pre-sets can be configured, including defaults for

each optical sensor already stored in the memory. Users may add up to six more custom wavelengths and call them up simply by pressing the lambda (λ) key. Data is uploaded by USB interface, with software to program a PC to download captured data, configure and control the device through the USB interface.

CONCLUSION

Measuring light levels to comply with regulations is not expensive - starting from under £40 for a basic light level meter to perform low volume occasional measurement. For larger offices, plants and facilities, or for more sophisticated applications, ‘you pays your money, and you takes your choice’ - as the saying goes.

The Legrand Arteor system has been specified to provide integrated lighting, heating, cooling and AV control across each unit. Each will feature a 10” Arteor touchscreen, which will provide a control

hub for the dwelling with customisable screens for individual users, and control by room or function. The master bedroom will also feature a 1.2” Arteor touchscreen, providing control of up to four functions. The system allows programming of pre-set scenes, customisable settings and remote operation using a smartphone, tablet or laptop. Legrand’s Arteor Black Mirror sockets and switches have been specified for the apartment interiors to create a co-ordinated, contemporary look that complements the touchscreens and completes the luxury aesthetic of the installation.

PEOPLE

MINUTES WITH

John Chamberlin Personal thoughts about lighting technology, and its effect on the industry from John Chamberlin, UK sales director for retail lighting specialist, Microlights What is your favourite light source, and why?

What trends do you forecast in domestic lighting?

That would have to be the sun; great colour rendering and an infinite ability to make people smile.

How to make a house look and feel like a home with the new technology.

Should more be done to control light pollution, or is it not really a big issue?

It may be a few years off yet and rely on NASA to crack it!

Yes, especially in retail where lighting schemes are often ‘step and repeat’, with no specific impact consideration or on-site focusing.

Who is your favourite designer of anything that’s not lighting? Gaudi: what would Barcelona be without him?

Which lighting project would you like to have worked on? The exterior of Harrods in Knightsbridge, or the Burj Al Arab in Dubai.

Why do you think lighting is bucking the general trend and showing such strong growth? In the retail arena, there is a lot more confidence recently, and competition between retailers means pressure to refurbish. Our recently launched EDDI high-tech mini spot answers growing demand for product miniaturisation. It combines groundbreaking optical design and optimised passive cooling to create a compact fitting with a powerful output both in a smaller luminaire.

Chandelier or candle? Chandelier made from Murano glass, please.

After the huge changes LED has brought to the industry, what do you think will be the next big advance?

Is there one declining light source that you’ll miss above all others? If so, which is it, and why?

The use of controls, to further reduce energy usage and extend LED lifetime.

I’m not sure we’ll ever recreate the true warmth and colour of dimmed tungsten in a romantic setting….

Do you see a time when all lighting is sustainable? If so, how can we achieve it? It may be a few years off yet and rely on NASA to crack it!

COLLINGWOOD +44 (0) 1604 495 151 | www.collingwoodlighting.com UK’s first tiltable, fire-rated, IP65 LED downlighter for tiny recesses The new H4 FF luminaire from Collingwood Lighting is the UK’s first tiltable and dimmable LED downlighter to be fire-rated, moisture-resistant, and small enough to fit a recess of only 56mm. It has an IP65 rating and is fully Part L compliant for 90 minutes’ fire resistance, sound attenuation, and air tightness. The H4FF, which tilts up to 20° to either side at the touch of a finger, come in a choice of beam angles (38° or 60°) and colours (neutral white or warm white). Because the luminaire has a low profile, it fits easily into shallow ceiling voids. That makes it particularly suitable for challenging domestic and hospitality environments, including bathrooms and wet rooms. “The H4 FF changes the lighting rules for homes, hotels, and other environments where looks count,” says Justin Maeers, Chief Technical Officer at Collingwood. “Because it combines so many features in a single fitting, architects and interior designers can be far more playful with their lighting schemes. They can place low-energy LED light within any room in a building and direct the beam wherever they want. There are cost savings too: by making better use of each light beam, they need fewer fixtures.”

GE LIGHTING +86 3877 7888 | www.gelighting.com Odyssey LED: The latest in outdoor illumination from GE Lighting GE Lighting is expanding its range of outdoor LED luminaires with the Odyssey, a new controllable fitting that makes the superior quality, efficiency and reliability of GE LED luminaires available for a wide range of applications in streets, roads and beyond. The new fixture offers a range of output levels, from 21 up to 72 Watts, and comes with an adjustable mounting to within plus/minus 15 degrees, making it an ideal luminaire for a variety of street and roadway applications, industrial estates and walkways, as well as parks and other residential areas. The Odyssey LED features attractive styling and its tool-less entry, as well as clip-in gear tray and pre-cabling options, allow for easy installation and mounting on side and post tops. In terms of optics, the Odyssey LED offers high photometric performance and IP66 protection for the optical and electrical compartment. GE has fitted the Odyssey LED with its unique reflective optical design system, which improves controllability and minimises glare while improving horizontal and vertical uniformity. The Odyssey LED offers a selection of control options, notably DALI, 0-10V, step dimming and photocell, and can be configured in a variety of combinations of wattages, optics and drivers. The new luminaire also features the latest in LED chip technology for improved performance and efficiency. Benefitting from a service life of 50,000 hours, the maintenance requirements of the Odyssey are much lower than traditional streetlight solutions. This, combined with the low energy costs required to operate the luminaire, means the Odyssey LED offers an attractive return on investment. Like all of GE’s outdoor luminaires and technologies, this new product is based on rigorous testing, and can be offered as part of an end-toend lighting solution including service and financing.

Since receiving this award DANLERS has continued to invest in the research and development of new products including ‘ControlZAPP’ with its innovative ‘App’ based interface for increased energy saving control and end user flexibility. This technical advance into combined software and hardware development was extremely well received when launched earlier this year at Frankfurt’s Light + Building event. Find out how DANLERS latest range of energy saving solutions can work for you and view first-hand the innovative ‘ControlZAPP’ at the Energy Event 2014, NEC Birmingham, 16 & 17 September.

OLDHAM LIGHTING PROJECTS LTD +44 (0) 1483 53 33 02 | www.oldhamlighting.co.uk Rana-LED™ Lighting System Rana-LED™ is part of our popular Star-LED™ range. It is a rigid LED bar that is produced to order in custom lengths up to 2 metres. Available in a wide range of colour temperatures it is by far one of our most popular products; commonly used for concealed interior lighting and exterior façade lighting. With its slim design, at only 12mm wide, it is discrete and easy to conceal or mount in our range of housings. With power consumption as low as just 14.4watts per metre the system is highly energy efficient without compromising on lumen output. The addition of our new RanaPlus LED system brings the options of adding lenses to the chips to give a choice of beam angle, an even greater range of colour temperatures and the choice of three different IP ratings. Last year Oldham Lighting sold over 25,000 metres of Rana-LED™ and its sales are increasing year after year; regularly being specified by top lighting designers in hotels, airports, high-end offices and private residence’s.
