IN-STORE UPDATE WELLBEING GUESTROOMS BEST OF 2014

A Grade I-listed Elizabethan hotel in Suffolk has seen its electricity use fall by a third after replacing its existing lighting with energy-efficient LEDs from LED Hut Trade. Hintlesham Hall Hotel, a 16th century manor house set in 175 acres of Ipswich countryside, fitted more than 600 Lumilife LED lamps between August 2013 and April 2014 in a bid to significantly cut costs and consumption. With the entire hotel in line for a lighting update – including 32 guest rooms, communal areas, corridors, conference facilities and dining rooms – sourcing high-performance, cost-saving lamps without compromising on light quality or aesthetics was a top priority. LED Hut Trade’s extensive Lumilife range ticked all the boxes, allowing Hintlesham Hall’s director Ray Payne to give the hotel a modern, energy-efficient lighting makeover while maintaining the desired look and feel throughout. Ray explains: “When it came to updating the lighting at Hintlesham Hall, we knew we wanted to move over to cost- and energy-saving LEDs– but our main challenge was finding a supplier that could provide all the different types of lamps we needed. We opted for LED Hut Trade because of its vast product range – from dimmable spotlights for the bedrooms to candle-shaped lamps for the chandeliers in the dining rooms. The expert sales team was really helpful, offering advice on the best products to meet our needs and providing sample lamps for us to trial. They also helped us choose between warm white and cool white light depending on the ambience we wanted to achieve in each space, which is always an important consideration for a hotel.

few that weren’t, we were able to make the necessary adjustments and fit them ourselves, without the help of an electrician. Replacing every lamp in the building was a smart, long-term investment, which more than justified the initial outlay.” The retrofit project saw Hintlesham Hall install a mixture of GU10, B22, E27, E14, and G9 LEDs to replace its existing halogen and incandescent bulbs. As a result, the hotel has already reduced its overall electricity use by 40,722W compared to the same time last year – a significant 32% saving. LED Hut Trade provides the ultimate online LED lighting resource, specialising solely in LEDs and selling exclusively to the trade. It offers an unparalleled product portfolio of market-leading LED lighting solutions to suit any application – backed with competitive pricing, strong product guarantees and next-day delivery.

“Our on-site maintenance team found the installation process straight forward, with the vast majority of the lamps simply direct replacements that work seamlessly with our existing fittings. Even with the

“ Calculations show that our investment will pay for itself in just one year with continued savings for many more to come. “ Ray Payne, Hintlesham Hall Hotel, Suffolk

In the blink of an eye it seems, we’ve reached the final issue of the year – always a slightly bittersweet moment, but a good moment to look back at 2014, and all the wonderful things that you, the lighting industry has achieved. The continuing drive to create better, more efficient lighting solutions has led to fantastic creativity again this year, with LD’s really pushing the boundaries of what’s achievable, and manufacturers again and again pulling out all the stops to help them realise their visions. I’m not usually a great fan of too much harking back, but there have been so many incredibly brave and insightful projects throughout 2014 – many of which got little or no page space – that I’ve made an exception to my own rule, as TL showcases (some of) the best of 2014 on page 43. This is one of those occasions when I wish we had unlimited pages to fill, as the choice of what to include, and what to leave out, is almost beyond me. To avoid the danger of over-sentimentalising the season, we’ve shied away from twinkling shop fronts and over-decorated high streets, instead to concentrate on what’s going on inside the stores this season. Despite the huge advances in LED lighting, there’s a growing level of concern that retailers aren’t prepared to take up the money and energy savings on offer. Why, when those savings make it a clear win-win situation, aren’t independents and chains leaping on the LED bandwagon? It seems that ignorance could be the answer, and you can read all about it on page 36. Of real interest to me, and many of you I’m sure, are the incredible advances in lighting to promote wellbeing (Light me better, page 70). As someone who worked for many years in a badly lit office with no natural light, and flickering fluorescents that more often than not, were kept off in favour of a desk lamp, I am a huge fan of good quality lighting. Whether it’s in the office, factory or warehouse, or in our own homes, the difference between good and poor quality lighting on our health and wellbeing can’t be over-estimated. A number of forward thinking companies have been investigating the link between light and wellbeing, and there are some startling products coming to market that harness the power of light, thanks in no small part to the LED revolution. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next. Here’s hoping for a healthy and happy 2015. Merry Christmas! Gill Anderson | editor

Measuring up LIA Laboratories has welcomed Holophane to its Unmetered Supply Measurement Certification Scheme, which provides an assurance of the validity of the power data measured by manufacturers when describing the performance of their lighting products for use in unmetered supply (UMS) applications. To be accepted into the LIA Laboratories scheme, Holophane was required to undergo a thorough inspection of its own laboratory, in order to verify the adequacy of the measurement equipment, documentation, and the technical competence of the staff. Passing the inspection with flying colours,

the company is now permitted to make measurements of apparent power and true power for its products and submit these measurements to the LIA Laboratories in lieu of report preparation for submission to ELEXON. Mark Salt, the LIA Laboratories general manager commented: ‘It’s great to see the commitment to quality from Holophane. Their team has worked long and hard to meet the high requirements of the scheme and they must be congratulated for their efforts.’ LIA Laboratories will ensure, by regular inspection, that the integrity of the measurements made by Holophane’s registered laboratory is maintained to the high standards required.

HIGHLIGHT Life on the road 2014 saw Hamilton Litestat’s mobile demonstration vehicle (MDV) take to the road as Grant & Stone hosted the vehicle’s launch tour at four of its branches in early August. Hamilton’s aim for the creation and investment in the mobile unit is to give electrical wholesaler staff, customers and clients the opportunity to discover the company’s intelligent control solutions and high quality switch plate and socket collections – all designed to harness cuttingedge technology. Andy Grant, director, Grant & Stone said: ‘As a long standing Hamilton Partner, Grant & Stone was delighted to welcome the Hamilton MDV to our High Wycombe branch. The day was a big hit, allowing both branch staff and contractors to experience first-hand Hamilton’s

out-of-the-box Mercury lighting control and audio system, and the chance to judge for themselves just how easy it is to install. ‘Hamilton’s technical sales team were great, keen to answer questions about installing a system. Mercury is the ideal solution for the first-time installer looking to add an extra string to their bow, and being able to match the control plates with other Hamilton switch plate & socket collections makes it the perfect solution for endcustomers requiring a totally coordinated look – a trend we’re seeing a lot!’ Hamilton MDV also took in a circuit of the south west and north during the autumn. Venues included CEF in Kingsbridge and Edmundsons in St Austell as well as NICEIC North.

Got a point LABC, the member organisation representing local authority building control departments in England and Wales, says it is very concerned that the Conservative Party, if it forms the next Government, will allow 100,000 new homes to be exempt from the normal standards of energy efficiency. The Conservatives’ planned decision to provide starter homes for first-time buyers

Nomination time CIBSE has announced a new lighting category for entry to its Building Performance Awards, endorsed by the SLL. The Lighting for Building Performance Award recognises the importance of lighting within the built environment, and its impact on energy consumption. Lighting impacts on occupants and represents 30-40 per cent of a commercial building’s energy use. The judging panel, which will include SLL president elect, Liz Peck, will be looking for lighting systems or innovative lighting designs commissioned or launched between 1 July 2012 and 30 June 2014. Entries will need to show delivery of the required illumination levels (on all relevant surfaces, not just the working plane), lighting quality and working conditions for building users or occupants, and demonstrate substantially reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions. The Awards, which focus on actual, measured performance, are judged by a panel of experts and industry leaders from a number of complementary spheres within the built environment.

aged under 40, means they would be exempt from zero carbon regulations, which are designed to make properties highly energyefficient and cheaper to run. Paul Everall, chief executive of LABC, said: ‘We regret this U-turn in Government policy. High standards of energy efficiency can be delivered without adding significantly to the costs of new homes. To achieve this, industry

needs volume, and just one standard to attain economies of scale. ‘Training and design also need one standard. The benefits of the zero carbon standard are obvious. Buyers receive considerable benefits in increased comfort, and lower bills. So when they come to sell their property and move on, who will want to buy such substandard homes?’

Deserved accolade Atrium has been awarded the Special Recognition Award from the ILP. Presented to companies that have made a significant contribution towards the ILP’s aims, the award highlights Atrium’s remarkable support and commitment to the association and to the lighting profession. Earlier this year, Atrium approached the ILP to develop customised

training for the company’s staff to gain awareness of advances within the lighting sector, and also to develop as a team. Atrium worked closely with the organisation to identify the specific knowledge and skills it wanted to build on. From this, ILP’s dedicated trainers created a bespoke training programme to meet Atrium’s requirements. Ulysse Dormoy,

managing director of Atrium commented: ‘We are honoured to have been awarded the Special Recognition Award from the Institution of Lighting Professionals. Here at Atrium, we feel it imperative to support such organisations, whilst enhancing our own knowledge of this rapidly growing sector.’ The Institution seeks to ensure that its members attain and develop the

professional knowledge, skills and education to meet necessary competencies. Members work on exterior and interior projects, in public spaces, workplace, leisure, retail and residential applications, delivering excellence in lighting. Guy Harding, membership VP said: ‘We all know that CPD, competency, and training are an essential part of a career in the

lighting profession. It is rare though, for an organisation to dedicate so much of its time and resources towards a unified goal, which also supports a professional body. Therefore the ILP is delighted to celebrate this dedication by presenting Atrium with a Special Recognition Award to honour the support and commitment they have shown to the lighting profession.’

PEOPLE

No lighting products are listed on the register any more, so your fittings cannot be registered to ECA use of ECA. In my experience, most organisations have every intention of using ECA, but forget that they are entitled to it. Many products used to be listed on the ECATechnology Register, but have been taken off. If the products were removed, it doesn’t mean they are not energy efficient enough to comply, it just means that you need to obtain a statement from your supplier to show that they do comply. No lighting products are listed on the register any more, so your fittings cannot be registered to ECA, nor can they be ‘approved’ as we’ve heard from desperate sales guys looking to meet their targets by confusing the customer with half-truths and falsehoods. You either comply or you don’t; some products will and some will not. There is no such thing as ECA registered - it’s really very simple.

NOW ON TO PART L...

BRENDON AIREY

Smoke and mirrors

I

This month, resident columnist, Brendon Airey tackles two issues that are giving him cause to vent – Part L and ECA registration get asked a lot of questions every day, and the two I hear most frequently are: ‘is your fitting ECA registered?’ and ‘are you signed up to Part L of Building Regulations?’

GETTING TO THE TRUTH

The best one to start on is ECA or, for those who hate acronyms, Enhanced Capital Allowance. This scheme is designed to give businesses relief on the capital expenditure on compliant luminaires. The relief is not an additional benefit, but just a way of softening the blow of the initial capital outlay. Rather than spread the relief over five years, you can claim the benefit in one lump sum. So the two benefits of ECA are cash flow and the small amount of tax relief you may be able to claim. The more important questions the client should be asking themselves is, ‘is this really beneficial for me?’ or ‘is this just another well-rehearsed sales pitch to win an order with poorly understood jargon?’ Ultimately, the decision rests with the individual company, and only they will know how much they stand to gain from making

Well, is this a complete farce? We are simply looking at efficacy – yes, that simple word industry dinosaurs hate, because they get confused between total luminous flux and initial luminous flux. So let me remind you… Total luminous flux is the overall luminous output of the fitting, after losses (yes, that’s after you have used the diffuser). So the magic figure in Part L is 60 luminaire lumens per circuit watt (yes, an amazing increase of 5ll/cw.) We are good aren’t we? Although, not really, because... you could just install a multi-sensor that can do it all, connect a load of fittings with a terrible efficacy of 42ll/cw … and you could still achieve Part L. So, who thought up this idea? I know not all companies can afford high efficacy luminaires, and purchasing a cheap sensor is a much simpler solution, but are we not missing the point here? We should be installing both. High efficacy luminaires and lighting control systems go together like Champagne and caviar - we should be striving for excellence - and then some! That’s not to say that there are not some really great ideas in Part L. For example, I’m fully in support of zoning of lighting. Unfortunately, it seems the person who wrote the bit on efficacy of luminaires worked for a manufacturer who still has some traditional lamps to shift before they retire.

LG7 COMPLIANT LIGHTS

Another one of my absolute favourite questions: ‘is your fitting an LG7 compliant fitting?’ I’ve seen them advertised, but I am not sure that you can make one. Wouldn’t it be the scheme that is either compliant or not? (There must have been a marketing conference on good lighting that some of the luminaire companies sent their marketing directors to, and they all came back with another scheme they might be able to put on their leaflets.) I challenge you all to ask an electrician if they have ever fitted an LG7-compliant lighting scheme! It’s very good that we all talk to one other about these issues, but we should all look at the paperwork that created them. Then we can give our customers the right information to help them make an informed decision. We are lighting professionals, are we not? Perhaps it is time that we started to behave professionally. The industry is very quickly gaining the reputation that we are a bunch of used car salesmen, hiding behind acronyms that our customers don’t understand. Smoke and mirrors abound in every industry. I just hope that the lighting industry doesn’t become the ‘dodgy dealers’ of the energy market. www.tlmagazine.co.uk • D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 4 • 15

HIGHLIGHT Looking ahead The WEC project, Financing Resilient Energy Infrastructure, will seek to understand how the energy and finance sectors can work together, and with other sectors, to better understand risk and uncertainty in energy infrastructure, and unlock the capital needed to accelerate the transition to a resilient global energy economy. Christoph Frei, Secretary General of the World Energy Council, said: ‘New emerging risks are posing ever greater threats to the energy sector. Unless we have solid understanding of the nature of these risks, and appropriately adapt energy financing mechanisms and infrastructure design, we may well see an investment impasse, which could threaten to cripple global energy systems. ‘Our new initiative will develop the necessary

understanding as catalyst for continuing to mobilise the massive capital flows required to expand, replace and transition our energy infrastructure.’ The project will seek to find out how much additional energy infrastructure investment would be needed to address the emerging technical and physical risks. It will identify and characterise the nature, frequency and severity of these risks, and share and promote the incorporation of them into energy infrastructure design and investment decisions. The first phase of the study will be released in the first half of 2016, ahead of the World Energy Congress. The findings will be used by the energy and finance industry to inform future investment decisions.

Unplugged A new company, Wireless Lighting, has been launched with an online portal dedicated to the dry and cross hire of battery-powered wireless lighting technologies for the show and event industry in and around London. Founder, Justin Hammond, who has been at the sharp end of the professional lighting, video and AV rental industry for eight years, spotted a gap in the market for quick, simple, reliable and nononsense service providing wireless lighting kit. He explained: ‘There’s been a massive surge in popularity and use of wireless LED lighting over the last two years – there’s no messing around with cabling, and the lighting fixtures can instantly transform any environment. Wireless Lighting is designed to provide a fast, efficient and straightforward service to all those wanting to make use of this technology on their events.’

Growing, growing... With an investment of £4m during the past 12 months, Dextra Group has recognised that LED is becoming the light source of choice for its clients. Following the success of the first SMT line, which was installed

last year, a dedicated 12,000 sq ft specialist electronics facility has been commissioned. A total of four SMT production lines have now been installed, with the capacity to place half a million LED chips on cards of up to 900mm x

Funded for the future Lightsense UK’s expansion plan has received a £1.2m boost from Finance Birmingham (FB). MD, Ian Thomas said: ‘In the space of two years, we have gone from a start-up business to a major player in the commercial lighting industry, creating effective solutions for our clients in a financially-pressured, environmentally-conscious market place.’ LSUK is taking advantage of Finance Birmingham’s £56m Mezzanine Fund, the largest individual growth capital fund for SMEs in the region. The fund, which is supported by the Government’s Regional Growth Fund, is expected to create or safeguard more than 5,000 jobs LSUK will also benefit from an investment from FB’s £9m debt and equity fund. Marcus Hook, investment manager of Finance Birmingham, said: ‘The LED lighting market has experienced considerable growth over the past few years, showing little sign of slowing down. LSUK has impressively capitalised on recent advances in this sector – our funding will help the firm to fulfill customer demand and continue to grow an impressive customer list, both in this country and overseas. The deal to provide investment to LSUK was completed in just over a month – a very fast turnaround. We recognise that time is key for businesses experiencing growth and, by moving quickly, we are allowing the company’s management team to focus on its business operations and achieve exciting future plans.’

600mm in a single eight hour shift. Specialist areas for sensor assembly and other sensitive electronics have been incorporated in a single location. A fully controlled environment ensures consistent and

high quality production in accordance with all regulations. Every single card produced is tested before being installed into a luminaire, with assurance that only fully operational products leave the premises. Self-sufficiency has

now been achieved, bringing a new level of flexibility to production and design. The ability to customise card designs ensures that exact criteria for cost, lumen output, power consumption and return on investment are met.

GET SMART

B

usiness can’t run on guesswork. Every financial bod will tell you that the only way to achieve success is by planning; having a financial strategy in place that is constantly monitored and updated. So how is it that so many businesses don’t have a clue how much they’re spending on their lighting, and even less idea what to do to reduce that spend? Jason Ng of Honeywell ED&S gets to the heart of the question ‘Ask anyone involved in the day-to-day running of an organisation – the CEO, CFO, CIO, head of operations, facilities manager – what’s important to them, and the word ‘control’ will feature high up the list. A finance director wants to control operating and capital expenditure flowing in and out of an organisation. IT controls the flow of information; HR controls the behaviour of employees, security controls their access in and out of the building. Facilities’ controls the delivery, use and maintenance of equipment or spaces within an organisation. Control is the watchword of a successful, well-run business. ‘The recession that has plagued the Continent since 2008 has subsequently

22 • D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 4 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk

Taking the guesswork out of lighting costs for business

fuelled a desire for even greater control across European organisations. Fiscally, companies are clamping down on gravy trains like business class travel, expense accounts, subsidised canteens, annual pay rises, automatic bonuses, cellphone roaming. Moreover the phrase du jour – big data – means businesses have greater visibility into their organisations than ever before; information on customers, employees, inventory, supply chain, logistics. That visibility enhances their ability and determination to control the different facets of their organisation. ‘There is one notable exception to the rule: lighting. That many organisations lack a system to manage their lighting is truly staggering. A recent study by Ex-Or recently revealed that, on average, lighting is left on unnecessarily in the workplace for up to 12 hours a day – including in storerooms and warehouses – while just under a fifth (17 per cent) sometimes leave

office lighting on needlessly 24-hours a day. The study also showed a whopping 44 per cent of respondents leave up to five unoccupied rooms at their workplace lit for significant portions of the day, and nearly one in five regularly light more than 20 rooms unnecessarily. ‘Consider this; according to the Carbon Trust, up to 40 per cent of a building’s electricity use is accounted for by lighting. Worse, Europe’s energy prices have soared in the past five years. ‘Between 2008 and 2012, energy retail prices rose by 17.5 per cent for industry and 20 per cent for households. In January, chief executive of Italian oil and gas company Eni, Paolo Scaroni, warned that the difference in energy price between Europe and North America was creating a ‘massive competitive advantage for the US’ and a ‘crisis’ for the region. It begs the question; how can businesses justify such a lax approach to lighting controls? What’s even more bewildering is there is no shortage of solutions available on the market today, suitable for almost any space. Presence detection technology uses sensors to automatically turn lights off in an

COMMERCIAL

Consider this; according to the Carbon Trust, up to 40 per cent of a building’s electricity use is accounted for by lighting unoccupied space - from an empty part of an office, to the floor of a library, or an aisle of a big warehouse. In addition, daylight harvesting solutions - capable of offsetting the amount of light emitted in a space based on the relative presence of natural light – are growing in popularity and reliability. ‘Even organisations that are making smart investments in lighting control solutions are occasionally rendering those systems inefficient or inert through poor installation. It is common for customers that install solutions without an experienced, trusted contractor, to choose the wrong

products for the wrong space, or wire them in incorrectly. ‘Unfortunately, ceiling paraphernalia, wall hangings or furniture can easily inhibit optimised operation of the market’s standard lighting control solutions. Equally, customers that commission a lighting control installation without consulting a lighting designer are typically unaware of the technical standards and lux levels that govern their use in a particular office or space, risking non-compliance with regulation. ‘Help is at hand. The latest, most innovative products now hitting the shelves provide simple identification icons to ensure the wrong product isn’t chosen, using colour coded connectors to simplify wiring, and an intuitive hand-held programming device to ensure products are set up correctly. Equally, by following a simple process, light switching and dimming levels are guaranteed to be keyed in properly, taking the guesswork out of the set up, and ensuring design requirements are met. New state-of-the-art tilting lenses mean that placement of a detector is no longer critical, as coverage can be easily adjusted.

Micro and macro detection delivers fine movement detection without the need for microwave products, ensuring no one using subtle movements – typing on a keyboard or checking stock for example – is left in the dark. ‘Well-run businesses understand the importance of control. You can’t run a successful operation of any size on guesswork and approximation - well, not for long anyway. ‘Lighting is the anomaly. Organisations everywhere are relying too heavily on their employees – aided by a sticker on the door or wall – to ‘turn off the lights’. ‘This just isn’t sustainable. As energy prices rise, bottom lines are squeezed, the regulatory spotlight on carbon emissions intensifies, and Big Data starts asking tough questions, the boards of every company will be demanding the adoption of lighting control solutions. ‘Smart organisations will invest now, and never look back.’ CON TACT Honeywell Carbon Trust

Read all about it! The challenge of making the latest technology fit a heritage building

T

here has been an increased focus on lighting in recent years with the rise of LED, which has been furthered by the imminent Part L revisions that are lighting specific. It’s all great news as lighting can account for some of the largest energy spend in a building and reducing this is always going to be greener and more financially prudent. One challenge, however, is making new technologies fit our heritage buildings, preserving the old ways from being abused, if you will. Overcoming this challenge was very much the focus of Spectral Lighting’s project at Bristol’s Central Library. The Grade 1 listed building, designed by Charles Holden, dates from 1906. The main reading room in the library has a vast tunnel vaulted glass ceiling that had been lit with classical, candelabrastyle chandeliers. When it was rewired, the building management looked at how they could make the lighting scheme more efficient. As beautiful as the chandeliers were, they were more decorative than functional, and were extremely inefficient. ‘We needed a replacement for the existing GLS chandeliers,’ said Andrew Boulton, senior engineer at Bristol City Council. ‘Our fittings’ inefficiency became hard to justify, so we needed to find a low energy, low maintenance alternative with functional light levels and high colour rendering; but equally important was the aesthetic. We would not compromise the heritage of the library.’ Working with electrical contractor, A E Horder, Spectral Lighting proposed a design using its extruded H-PROFIL system. ‘We are seeing a lot of heritage building managers looking closely at their lighting systems, as they are just not up to scratch in today’s lighting landscape,’ said Spectral UK head of design, Jon Estell. ‘The biggest challenge in these settings is offering a design that will fit the architecture and history; providing energy efficient solutions is relatively easy but modern luminaire design

‘There was a certain level of scepticism when we first spoke about replacing the chandeliers’ doesn’t always lend itself to listed buildings. That’s where H-PROFIL shines.’ Spectral was founded on the principal of producing special and bespoke luminaires and H-PROFIL allows for designs to be created on an individual project basis. ‘The flexibility of the system is key to its success here at the library,’ explained Richard Williams, director at A E Horder. ‘The luminaire designs are a collaborative effort between Bristol City Council, our team, and Spectral, which allowed us to create a fitting for the setting without having to compromise on performance, while maintaining the integrity of the architecture.’ The circular pendant ring design that has replaced the candelabras has been suspended under the glass ceiling using an anti-twisting cable suspension arrangement. The LEDs fitted inside the extrusion are

covered by cylindrical acrylic glass to create a softer diffused light, and the expanse of glass above meant there was no requirement for an indirect light source. The aluminium extrusion acts as a perfect heat sink for the SLM LED modules, so only a minimal extra heat sink was inserted behind the LED fixtures. The improved light levels produced are a major benefit in the reading room, and the tailor-made chandeliers blends effortless into the listed building’s décor, maintaining its proud history and connection to the past. ‘There was a certain level of scepticism when we first spoke about replacing the chandeliers,’ explained Boulton. ‘Bristol is rightly proud of this building, and preserving it extends from the exterior façade to the decoration, furniture and lighting. The end result has been extremely well received; in fact the minimal nature of the design accentuates the high, arched ceiling and maximises the natural light in the library.’ CON TACT Spectral lighting www.spectral-lighting.co.uk

Metway’s range of 166 G type products includes a 6-pole panel mount connector for installation within a luminaire, a moulded tee piece to allow for daisy chaining luminaires and male/female low profile flat connectors, which will all be of the black/blue mechanical coding. In addition, the 6-pole black/blue PCB connectors for use within lighting control modules and the standard ‘classic’ high rise male/female connectors will complete the range. The 166 G type range of connectors have been widely regarded as the lighting industry’s preferred method of connectivity for many years, although it has lacked some key components to simplify the ‘plug & play’ capabilities of the luminaires. Until now, unsightly bulky tee modules have been installed onto the luminaire to allow for pluggable connectivity to the G series system, which many of the major lighting control manufacturers have adopted. The 6-pole moulded tee piece will be an added option for the purpose of daisy chaining luminaires and will plug directly into the panel mount connector allowing for a through connection, or alternatively can be used for recessed downlight type luminaires with a short flying lead. All lead assemblies will utilise a low profile flat connector, with all products dual latching for security of connection.

ENERGY EFFICIENT

HIGHLIGHT And on again... Harvard Engineering has launched a range of Retro LED geartrays to allow local authorities to lower the energy and costs associated with street lighting networks, without having to replace luminaires. The retrofit solution allows SON, SOX and CFL streetlights to be converted to LED, without losing performance. Plugand-play geartrays are easy to install, giving energy savings of up to 75 per cent, and associated CO2 reductions of 100kg per lamp per year. Harvard’s solution combines the performance benefits of its CoolLED driver range with the engineering competence seen in the design and manufacture of the LEDeng light engine range. The Retro LED solution has the benefits of a capital cost significantly less than the cost

of a new LED luminaire. With a two- to three-time ROI, many local authorities have already installed the geartrays, offering an energy efficient ‘lights on’ alternative to part-night cells, which switch streetlights off for part of the night. James Quinn, at Harvard commented: ‘With energy prices ever increasing and street

Sharp Devices Europe has launched a new portfolio of LED modules, which includes two easy-to-integrate module packages. These latest additions come in two module sizes - standard and slim. The standard Intermo model is a 50mm diameter, 6mm high, Zhaga Book 3 formfactor module, which ensures compatibility with a large ecosystem of third-party products. The somewhat smaller slim module, which is 44mm in diameter and 3.6mm high, has a nicely compact form factor, which is ideal for luminaire designs where space is at a premium.

Manchester-based lighting and rigging company, dbn Lighting is no stranger to SGM products. Historically its hire fleet has contained large quantities of the popular Palco 3 and Genio LED fixtures to service its wide roster. Now the company has brought its range up to date by acquiring 24 P-5 low profile LED wash lights from SGM UK; the unit was designed to replace the Palco series, and bring the concept of the powerful IP65-rated wash light into the 21st Century. According to dbn director and lighting designer, Stephen Page, the purchase was not made without first carrying out a critical review of other comparable fixtures. ‘We reviewed and tested lots of alternatives, but the P-5s were the best, and they will be suitable across the diverse range of projects we work on,’ he asserted. The fixture’s enviable output-to-consumption ratio reveals an overall efficacy factor of 52 lumens per watt. This is derived from 44 x RGBW 10W LEDs, with a power consumption reduced to just 410W. Interchangeable 15-, 21-, and 43-degree lens kits are also available. One of their first high profile appearances was at an outdoor arts event in Glasgow, tied in with the Commonwealth Games.

The Matrix Philips has expanded Matrix Platform solutions, consisting of turnkey LED solutions using components, optics and Luxeon LEDs, assembled on a wide selection of boards. The platform launches with two product lines; the Luxeon XR and

XF—on rigid and flexible substrates respectively. ‘More than ever, luminaire manufacturers need robust solutions that meet their specific design requirements,’ commented Viral Hazari, product line director for the Matrix Platform. ‘That need, together with today’s time-to-market pressures, inspired

lighting now included in the Carbon Reduction Commitment, many local authorities want to upgrade their street lighting to LED, but they don’t have the capital costs to do so. Our Retro LED Geartrays offer a cost effective solution to upgrade to LED by utilising existing streetlights, with an excellent payback period.

our Matrix Platform.’ Based on customer requirements, Philips can provide both solutions designed with any Luxeon LEDs. Additionally, there are both “offthe-shelf” and “builtto-spec” options. With Matrix Platform solutions, luminaire makers/ designers benefit from faster time-tomarket, simplified

supply chain, and access to proven illumination-grade performance. ‘Philips sees manufacturers quickly moving toward boards and modules to meet their time-tomarket goals, and we have been working with select customers to understand and enhance the value we could provide,’ added Hazari.

Pushing boundaries Concord has upgraded its award-winning 26W Beacon range of spotlights. By incorporating new LED chips within the luminaires, the brightness and CRI has been dramatically increased. This makes Beacon an ideal choice for applications where natural looking light is required, such as museums, galleries and retail environments. ‘The Concord Beacon range already had an impressive set of credentials,’ commented Neil Solanki, strategic business unit manager at Havells Sylvania. ‘With the amalgamation of the new LED engine into the range, CRI has been significantly boosted to make illuminated colours seem more true to life than ever before. ‘As an example of the quality of the new chips, on our popular Concord Beacon Muse 26W 3,000K spotlight, brightness is up from 463 lumens to 690 lumens, and CRI from Ra95 (R9 – 50) to Ra97 (R9 – 90). That’s a performance increase of 58 per cent at the same wattage.’ As well as continuously pushing the performance boundaries of existing Beacon models, Concord is continuously innovating with new fixture options. The company has recently released two mains voltage spotlights - the Beacon Major and Beacon Minor, which require no separate LED driver to operate.

GUEST POWER

Less is often more – as long as the less is more-ish and bright-ish

T

he poor beleaguered hotelier suffers from a problem that makes his energy supplier rub his hands in glee – the invisible light switch. Nobody is quite sure why the normally responsible guest turns into an energy guzzling monster the second they get their key in the lock, but it seems they do. So, what’s the answer to the wasted energy for lights left on when rooms are unoccupied? And while we’re at it, why do so many hotel rooms have more fittings than a savvy six-year-old can count, but no way to read after dark? What’s going on in hotel land? ‘Designing good lighting for hotels is about more than creating stylish products that are on trend and look the part,’ says Robert Chelsom. ‘It’s about top quality products that provide efficient lighting and enhance the guest experience, whether through multi-functional guestroom lighting or bold public area statement pieces.’ And he should know. Chelsom has built a reputation over many years for creating stunning fittings for the hospitality sector. Lighting really does make or break the traveller’s hotel experience; something that is illustrated by recent extensive research conducted by Osram, suggesting that of 10,000 recent hotel reviews in London alone, (350,000 globally), most guests complained about the dim, bad and sparse lighting in their rooms. ‘Lighting is clearly important to travellers, so much so that they take the time to go online to warn future guests about their bad experience,’ commented David Ellis at Osram. ‘One recent visitor to London felt that his stay at a fabulous hotel was ruined, solely by inadequate lighting in the rooms. This lasting impression remains with them when they re-book in the future, meaning they’ll probably shop around and consider alternative places to stay.’ ‘Accordingly,’ continued Chelsom, ‘when we design either our standard

ENERGY EFFICIENT lighting collection, or bespoke pieces, we do so from multiple perspectives; from that of the hotelier, the interior designer and - above all else - the guest.’ The first thing to consider is the aesthetic of the product; does it look the part and fit in with the overall design concept? Interior designers are pushing the boundaries more than ever before, always looking to create interior schemes that offer something different, and inevitably lighting is an essential part of that. ‘It’s often asked whether table or floor lamps can make a difference in a guestroom, or are they surplus to requirement,’ added Chelsom. ‘Well, they most certainly can, by adding ambient lighting and creating atmosphere in what has become an increasingly multifunctional space.’

IN THE DARK

As highlighted by the Osram research, lighting is more than just about creating the wow factor and needs to rank higher up the designer’s list of priorities. ‘One of the biggest complaints to concierges is that guestrooms are insufficiently lit to work, put make up on, or to simply see, so it’s our job as lighting specialists to work with the designers and hoteliers to light guestrooms and public areas successfully,’ said Chelsom. ‘We have helped several hotel chains to create their brand standard light levels, following guestroom lux level surveys carried out by our technicians. ‘A hotel room is no longer just a room to sleep in, it has become multifunctional, a place to eat, sleep,

Lighting is clearly important to travellers, so much so that they take the time to go online to warn future guests about their bad experience’ work and relax and the lighting scheme needs to reflect the variety of uses and generate the correct light levels to meet all those functions.’ As hoteliers expect stylish design and quality whilst working to a tighter budget, it should be a given that both are essential for contract use. Products need to be designed to withstand frequent and often forceful handling because those of domestic quality aren’t going to last two minutes in the hotel environment. ‘We need to provide clients with products that reflect the highest standards of engineering and finish, at the right blend of price and quality,’ agreed Chelsom. ‘Guests want hotels to feel like a luxurious home away from home and they want their hotel lighting in particular to reflect this, to be stylish yet functional. For example, most guests have dimming functionality at home and expect it in hotels, but they want it to be clearly visible on the product and, most of all, usable. I have lost count of the number of times I have heard stories of the concierge being called up to the room to explain how to dim the lights, illustrating there needs to be a distinct balance between design and functionality. ‘Blending cutting edge style with the latest technological developments is becoming more important than ever but we constantly need to ask ourselves whether we can make the lighting experience better for the hotelier by saving money on running and maintenance costs. LEDs are now an essential light source in many hospitality spaces, as sustainability moves to the forefront of the minds of developers and designers. Whilst they don’t answer every possible lighting requirement, the option of LEDs has offered increased design possibilities when integrating this technology into our fittings for future energy saving. ‘Whilst I still believe sustainability is at the top of most people’s list versus design and price, it is important to recognise the need to go green as the wave of the future. It’s imperative that lighting companies are moving with the times and demonstrating commitment to taking sustainability seriously.’ Bearing in mind that the Osram research threw up a comment from one traveller who compared the lighting in a Copenhagen hotel to that of a waiting room in a railway station, it really is time to get it right.

Sound advice Osram has created this five-point guide for hoteliers: • Make sure lighting isn’t an afterthought. Urge your design consultant to look at lighting considerations early in any design project. • Consider cost-effective ways of making a difference with your lighting. For instance, don’t feel you can afford changing all your halogen to LED lighting? Then perhaps invest a small portion of your budget into new fittings, so you can dim your current lights to create different atmospheres in your establishment. • Don’t blind your guests with new technology they don’t understand how to use when making a change to your lighting. For instance, if you’re going to introduce new lighting control in the rooms, make sure they’re simple for your guests to use. • Consider simple decorative lighting solutions. These can make a huge difference, and make an impact on your guests as they enter your establishment. • Don’t forget the small lights. Guests can become frustrated if mirror lights provide poor light when getting ready or bedside lamps are not bright enough for them to read.

ENERGY EFFICIENT

Mind the gap

Tackling the knowledge gap that’s hindering investment in energy-efficient lighting is vital, says Colin Lawson, head of sales, marketing and product development at Tamlite Lighting

ENERGY EFFICIENT

M

yths, misconceptions and lack of knowledge continue to prevent uptake of energy-efficient lighting; it’s never been more important to try and bridge this knowledge gap. The news is conclusive – public perception (or rather misperception) of energy efficiency remains one of the biggest barriers when it comes to curbing the UK’s growing carbon footprint. A recent CBI report found that ‘a lack of awareness at all levels undermines businesses’ attempts to better manage their energy use’. Another report, by the International Energy Agency, found that two-thirds of the energy efficiency potential available between now and 2035 will remain unrealised. Energy efficiency is sorely undervalued, despite the huge impact it can have on reducing costs and CO2 emissions. This is especially true in the arena of low-energy lighting, where myths and misconceptions too often rule. For us in the lighting industry, how can we begin to bridge this knowledge gap? Where do the misconceptions lie and how can we help organisations to fully understand the benefits of energyefficient lighting?

UNDERESTIMATING FINANCIAL BENEFITS

The first, and most pressing, issue lies with the money side of the equation. According to a study by The Carbon Trust (The Business of Energy Efficiency), the financial benefit of energy-efficient upgrades is routinely underestimated. When, in the study, CFOs were asked to estimate the average internal rate of return of energy efficiency investments, their figure was less than half the actual rate. Furthermore, another study (by the International Energy Agency) found that it’s misleading to only factor in energy savings when calculating the ROI of energy efficiency upgrades. The IEA’s report found that when the value of increased productivity and operational benefits to companies was integrated into the traditional internal rate of return calculations, the payback period for

energy efficiency measures dropped from 4.2 to 1.9 years. This is particularly relevant to the lighting sector, where improved light quality can often boost staff morale, productivity, and (in retail environments), product sales. Additionally, the financial benefit of reduced maintenance is an oft-overlooked side product of long-lasting, energy-efficient lighting, since fewer maintenance manhours are required to replace dead lamps on a regular basis. This, too, forms a part of the financial equation – yet it is not always considered by CFOs. If the people in charge of the purse strings perceive energy-efficient technology as a poor investment – when, in reality, it can be a very good investment – this is understandably going to have a knockon effect. When return on investment is underestimated, it can make it harder to mobilise capital for new technology like low-energy lighting and controls. Installing energy-efficient technology may be dismissed as financially unfeasible, when, actually, it’s a lack of knowledge that’s the problem.

low specification LED products. Low spec, ‘value’ LED products are too often pitched as suitable for lighting all types of spaces, when actually a particular environment may require a high-spec, ‘performance’ product. This is a problem that the lighting industry must confront.

RAPIDLY CHANGING TECHNOLOGY

Greater transparency about lighting’s shortcomings as well as its benefits must also extend to the financial side. With their short payback periods, energy-efficient lighting products remain one of the most cost-effective ways to save energy. However, the ‘oversell’ of low-energy lighting, particularly LED, threatens to taint the whole industry. It’s up to us to make sure ROI and payback are communicated clearly and accurately, including any compromise on light quality that may accompany a ‘value’ product. As part of our own push towards industry excellence, Tamlite has established a new INFINITY mark. This mark of assurance allows customers to simply and easily recognise ‘performance’ LED products and differentiate them from their lower-spec counterparts. The INFINITY mark appears on LED products that meet the minimum criteria for excellent light quality, including critical factors like colour rendering and colour temperature.

What’s more, there isn’t just a lack of knowledge surrounding the financials of energy-efficient technology – the technology itself may be poorly understood. Lighting is a prime example of this.

This is a problem that the lighting industry must confront Lighting technology is changing and developing so quickly that many people – even those working at high levels in building services – do not know the latest facts. This is a problem, because, without upto-date knowledge of the lighting sector, investing in energy-efficient lighting can be a minefield for end users. Every year sees a dazzling array of new products come to market, all promising amazing energy savings. Payback periods are reducing, light outputs are increasing, and efficiency levels are improving – but not all products are suitable for every application. It’s understandably confusing for those without a detailed knowledge of lighting technology.

THE LED ISSUE

LED lighting provides an apt case in point, since different products can vary so substantially in terms of light quality. Those in the lighting sector know the effect that colour temperature, colour rendering and the design of the optics/reflectors can have on a product – but these concepts are likely to be hazy at best for lay people. Additionally, many suppliers obscure the facts – accidentally or wilfully – about their

INDUSTRY STANDARDS

There remains little in the way of standardisation of LED products. Since LED technology is developing so rapidly, with new products hitting the market every day, current standards cannot be established or maintained. The onus, therefore, falls on the major players in the lighting industry to foster business confidence in LEDs. What’s clear is that the industry must be working harder to support customers in making informed decisions. This means greater transparency about how ‘value’ products differ from ‘performance’ products, and educating the buying public on critical factors, like uniformity of light, colour rendering, colour temperature, and glare control.

TRANSPARENCY

BRIDGING THE GAP

It is industry initiatives like this one that have a key role to play. The knowledge gap that surrounds energy-efficient lighting technology is already having repercussions on both a large and a small scale. This knowledge gap is responsible for an average company overpaying for energy, because of inefficient or inappropriate lighting. And it’s also responsible for a slice of the UK’s creeping CO2 emissions levels. This is an issue that demands serious attention from the industry. We have an opportunity to make a significant difference in helping to educate the public – and to bridge this disastrous knowledge gap. CON TACT Tamlite www.tamlite.co.uk

major renovation project has been undertaken to create a new visitor centre at Howick Hall, Northumberland – the ancestral home of the Earl Grey – yes, he of the tea fame. The original grand entrance of the Hall has been entirely refurbished, and now features integrated Concord Beacon Muse and Stadium Evo 2 spotlight luminaires to illuminate key information panels, and highlight the stunning architectural details of the neo-classical interior. The new visitor centre is at the heart of the Grade II listed building, and provides detailed information that tells the story behind the Hall, and its magnificent gardens and arboretum as they evolved through generations of passionate family and gardeners. Williams Design Associates was appointed to refurbish the space, develop the display content, design the information displays, design a lighting scheme, and manage the entire project on behalf of the Howick trustees. Working closely with Iain Spencer, Concord’s project engineer, Colin Williams designed the lighting scheme to give a memorable ambience to the elegant space, in order to accent the architectural details, and to provide high quality illumination to the graphic panels.

The main criteria were to provide a dynamic and stylish installation, with low running costs and low maintenance, and with inbuilt flexibility to accommodate future developments as the centre evolves. ‘We have used Concord’s Beacon Muse in the past, and it has proved a reliable, efficient and contemporary fixture of the highest quality,’ explained Williams. ‘With Lytebeam, we were able to minimise physical work to the listed building fabric, and provide both ambient and precisely-directed, glare-free illumination.’ Using Concord’s Lytebeam Track, the Beacon Muse LED and Stadium Evo 2 spotlights were positioned to highlight key information panels. The Muse LED uses cutting-edge technology and ancient lens principles to create a fully adjustable spotlight. This meant Williams could adjust and specify the ideal positioning for the luminaires without having to worry about beam spread, focal length and future changes to the displays. Coupling the energy efficient lighting system with the enhanced pure and clear lighting effect has provided ideal for the renovation of the Hall’s visitor centre. Additional lighting provided by Concord parent company, Havells Sylvania for this project included the Lumiance InVerto, which was used to light the café and toilets, answering the demand for a contemporary decorative LED luminaire with both its easy-to-install and a stylish design. L3 emergency lighting was also installed as a reliable and energy efficiency solution to all-important emergency lighting.

On the fringe Blacklight supplied 700 fixtures, 16.5 miles of cable, and almost a mile of fairy lights to the Pleasance Theatre for the 2014 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, as well as providing all Dancebase venues with lighting and rigging. ‘2014 has seen yet another successful year working with Black Light as our lighting and staging supplier,’ said Matt Britten at Pleasance Theatre. ‘They fulfilled all of our requirements, some of which were very last minute, on time and in good humour. In terms of equipment, Black Light continued to champion low-energy lighting technology; for example, it supplied a large number of Robe Robin and ETC LED fixtures to the Pleasance. ‘We have many years of experience working for companies involved in the Fringe,’ said Paul De Luca from the company’s hire and sales support team. ‘One of the key challenges is the sheer amount of kit that has to be moved –– but we have the experience and expertise to do all the necessary forward planning. We also have the local knowledge that means all the logistics go without a hitch.

Wired for... cars

The outlook’s fine

The Outlook Festival at Fort Punta Christo, Pula, featured some of the biggest names from dub step, bass music and soundsystem. Lighting design for the event was undertaken by Fineline Lighting. It’s the third year that Fineline has been involved with supplying lighting and rigging for the Festival – and its’ first supplying all eight major performance stages, plus for all the Fort’s environmental and architectural components, including trees, bushes, landscape and historical features. Fineline’s Managing director, Rob Sangwell this year took on an additional dual role as production manager. He asked lighting designer, Nic Ayres to design and operate lights on the main Harbour stage, which included a live mix of stars as well as a selection of DJs, so his objective was to create a fabulous, flexible and dynamic visual space. The moving lights were nearly all Robe - Spot 600Es and Wash 600Es, Pointe multi-purpose fixtures and LEDBeam 100s, which were rigged all over the trussing framework, with additional Sharpies on the deck. These were joined by 6-lamp PAR bars, eight Atomic strobes plus a splattering of single LED PARs used to tone the trusses and reveal the architecture, plus 8-lites and 2-lite blinders.

It’s magic Ayrton has announced a new addition to its Radical series. One of the smallest of the Radical range, MagicBeam-R offers seven 15W LED RGBW sources with 67mm optics, to produce 3200 lumens with a centre beam intensity of 380,000 candela from 130W of power. Highly compact, lightweight, super-fast, and powerful, MagicBeam-R benefits from improved thermal management, and a fast 32-bit circuit board for rapid response to signals, which can be delivered via DMX or RDM. W-DMX by Wireless Solution Sweden was key to the Burning Man 2014 spectacle, held in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. The company made it possible for a series of “art cars”, bedecked in light, to move through the festival with control coming from a moving stage. Burning Man is an annual event and a thriving year-round culture. The event takes place during the week leading up to, and including Labor Day in the US, and is dedicated to the spirit of community, art and self-reliance, culminating in the burning of a series of effigies as a spontaneous act of “radical self-expression”. It is a popular

communal entertainment event. Walter Productions, located in Phoenix, Arizona, brought a parade of five oversized “art cars” plus a moving Kalliope main stage to Burning Man. The cars and stage were illuminated eye candy for spectators, and were all wirelessly synced with sound and lighting via W-DMX. Ryan Tucknott of Walter Productions explained: ‘We transmitted the DMX signal from Kalliope, and received it on all of our vehicles using 8db high-gain antennas. The system worked flawlessly last year with our four vehicles, so we added to the fleet this year!’

S

ome classic looks never go out of style, and tungsten lighting is one of them, which is why Art-Festival, a special events company based in Russia, chose 180 ETC Source Four fixtures with attached dimmers for a recent series of high end fashion shows in St Petersburg. The Art-Festival team wanted the best light to accentuate the work of the Russian and international fashion designers on show. ‘We looked at all leading international fashion shows for direction,’ explained Armin Kloss, ETC’s regional sales manager for Eastern Europe. ‘After extensively testing modern professional lighting sources, we opted for

a classic solution. Our tungsten Source Four fixtures delivered great results during the tests, while LED fixtures from other manufacturers weren’t bright enough, and not up to the level of the conventional Source Fours.’ Due to the large number of fixtures closely clustered on the lighting rigs, Art-Festival wanted a flexible solution that would require very little cabling, so decided on Source Four dimmers with ES (electronic silent) technology to provide per-fixture distributed dimming. The CE version of the Source Four dimmer turns the 750-watt Source Four into more than 1,200 watts of light, outperforming 230 volt, 1,200

watt condenser profiles. And because it is attached directly to the fixture, it eliminates the need for a centralised dimmer. ‘Source Four fixtures fit the demands of this type of installation the best,’ explained Art-Festival general director, Kirill Korobov. ‘In addition, the Source Four dimmer is the most durable, state-of-the-art, and economical option on the market in St Petersburg, when it comes to energy consumption.’ The fixtures and dimmers have had a lot of turns on the catwalk this season, having lit St Petersburg Fashion Week, Aurora Fashion Week, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Day St Petersburg, DLT Fashion Show, and Elle Fashion Days. Petrol heads Working with marketing agency, Arnold KLP, and creative production agency, DesignScene, XL Video has supplied an LED video wall for the Volvo V40 promotional roadshow that’s been touring the UK’s shopping malls.

The presentation area included a Volvo V40 R Design, allowing shoppers to experience the car up close, an array of touch-screen tablets equipped with an interactive quiz, and XL’s 5m x 3m Barco NX6 LED wall, which displayed advertising footage about the V40 and Volvo’s current ‘Swedish Adventure’ contest. For the project, XL’s Jacqueline Rice, worked with Attila Keskin of Design Scene to recommend a suitable LED wall for the project – where the mixture of venues included both natural daylight and indoor mall lighting. Rice commented on the project: ‘It has been a pleasure to work with the projects team at DesignScene on this event. Each venue brought its own challenges, such as being under a glass roof on the hottest day of the year, but by working together, solutions were found, and the displays gained lots of positive attention from the public.’

Easy as APP The Easy lighting control from Ansorg permits simple wireless lighting control for retailers, and is already in use by Karl Lagerfeld in both its London and Paris outlets. According to the manufacturer, the name says it all: shop lighting has never been easier, more flexible and faster to control. Using Bluetooth technology, LED luminaires can be controlled and individually regulated via the Easy app, allowing the store interior to become a stage for the merchandise on display. It provides the retailer with

the opportunity to adapt lighting directly and creatively to changing merchandise, and by means of lighting scenes, to create attractive experience values for customers. Lighting scenes can be created and called up whenever they’re needed, or the user can programme fixed sequences using the app’s calendar function. By means of a share function, all programmed lighting scenes and sequences can be transferred between staff member’s tablets, literally at the touch of a button.

Shopping on the Ko Konigsallee in Dusseldorf, known as the ‘Ko’ to locals, is the height of chic. It is a shopper’s paradise boasting top brands and their flagship stores. To promote its brand, global fashion giant SARAR has created an iconic flagship store on the ‘Ko’, with a bold design, stunning decor and a bespoke lighting system to match. The imaginative lighting solution has 173 wall lights from Soberg Lystek along with Bridgelux BXRA 4,000 LED fittings, powered by Harvard Engineering’s LED drivers. This combination of leading technologies gives SARAR comprehensive control over its lit environment, enabling a dynamic and flexible ambience to be created to suit its changing product range. The inbuilt ability to set different lux levels across the store, of between 1,380 and 1,900, allows for certain areas to be highlighted, and throughout creates a refined and sophisticated look, ideally suited to reflect SARAR’s own luxurious brand. Harvard’s CLQ drivers act as the interface between the lights and the main power supply. They deliver up to 62W with a well-regulated output current of 2100mA. As they ensure the power supplied to the LED is optimised, the CLQ single channel drivers provide a high performance solution for powering high-brightness LEDs.

Streaking ahead The concept for Puma’s London headquarters was ‘Light Speed’, conveyed by the way light streaks throughout the interior elements. To meet the design challenge of the brief, M Moser Associates specified the Blade LED by Spectral Lighting, in Puma’s corporate colours of red, black and grey. ‘We aim to make each luminaire bespoke for any situation, and were delighted to offer a unique solution for Puma,’ said Jon Estell, Spectral UK design manager. ‘It is a perfect example of how Blade can help a lighting scheme to complement an interior design scheme, while contributing to the overall look and feel of a space, with the added benefit of offering acoustic absorption.’ Puma’s move provided the company with 20,000sq ft of space. M Moser was tasked with designing an environment to house multiple teams over three floors, while providing a communal feel. To help achieve this, the practice created a large ‘town hall’ breakout space on the top floor to bring together everyone who worked in the building. The look and feel is fun, and warm, with Spectral Blade LED fittings used to add ‘light streaks’ to reflect the Puma branding. Jose Mercado, associate at the design company commented: ‘We wanted to find a way of extending the elements of the Puma identity into the lighting scheme. To do this, we chose Spectral Blade LED in red, black and grey, and not only have the panels added a striking visual element, at the same time, Blade offers acoustic benefits, and being LED, saves energy.’

ighting wasn’t always Scott Oldner’s passion. Like many of us, he wound his way through various creative and not so creative career paths until finding lighting. Rock musician, booking agent, live music club owner, electrical engineer. It was the electrical engineering path that re-aquainted him with lighting from the rock-n-roll days and from then on, it was all about architectural lighting design. With a mother as a concert level pianist and a father as an electrical engineer, he found lighting a “perfect combination of left and right brain excitement”, Scott says. “I have several pseudo-mantras”, he says,”we are vertical beings so we see vertical surface first. So when you want the most bang for the buck, light the verticals first and the horizontals will take care of themselves. Also, we are designers of darkness as well as designers of light. are varied and may seem eclectic and lacking his own unique style, but as you look at the whole breadth of work, it becomes evident that he is a fan of all lighting and doesn’t follow anyone’s prescription. Most notably, the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Park 17 projects show a bold use of color while at the same time a sensitivity to architecture, while Hilton Anatole and The Place exhibit solid work in custom fixtures and large volumes. Scott believes that everyone should have access to quality design including middle American homes such as the Froelich Residence. Scott is developing a series of fixtures called the Scott Oldner Collection along with Lights Fantastic Pro to bring better design and a higher quality of fixtures and techniques to those who can’t afford lighting designer fees. “It’s important to give back, volunteer at the local food bank, or get involved in your church outreach effort.

Me, I like to volunteer (at local colleges) to raise the consciousness of lighting and health issues”. Scott is a vegan and loves to talk about cleansing and juicing almost as much as lighting, having lost almost 3 stone on his plant based regimen. “I want everyone to be in a state of wonder at how beautiful the world is and feel as good as I do”, he says. His latest growth has been in his partnership with Jez Blacker’s firm Illum Lighting Design. They have joined forces to better serve the architects and designers that need that extra level of detail and visual impact. Jez designs lighting out of California and Scott from Texas and both have projects that span the globe, most are hospitality projects from Dubai to San Francisco and from New York to London. Jez grew up and worked in London for 45 years before making the move with his wife and four boys to California. “I love London

island. Also on their team is Andrew Gauld from Edinburgh, Scotland who brings even more international experience to the firm. They call this partnership Blacker Oldner Lighting Design, BOLD. Currently, the Scott and Jez combined teams are working on hi-end residential projects, retail development projects and a resort in Cancun for the Breathless brand. We asked Scott about the highlights of his most recent trip to the UK. “This trip was more of a personal trip visiting family in Maidstone so it was low key on the business side”. Turns out his favorite architectural discovery on this trip was the Lloyd’s of London building. “I sure would love to get my lighting hands on that one and play a new song on it”. Maybe someday he and Jez will get that chance.

Data - Damnation

Does your photometric data show your company in the best possible light?

In a world where any competitive edge is beyond value, just having some photometric data is no longer enough, the data you publish must show your products and company in the best possible light. Apart from obvious things like being up to date, your data should be correctly formatted and available for all the design programs your clients might want to use.

Data - Discrepancies

What could possibly be wrong with my data?

Much of the data we see is raw test data even when the tested luminaire has some degree of symmetry. If data is not processed to apply the appropriate symmetry it will produce slightly odd looking results when used in a lighting program. Whilst this might not be critical in terms of lighting design results, it does not make your data look and feel as good as it could.

Photometric Data Preparation, correction editing & conversion

Design 3D CAD modelling Virtual photometry from CAD models Lens, louvre, reflector, refractor & prism design

A lot of data is now being measured and presented in accordance with American national standards (IESNA) used by American lighting design programs such as AGI32. European lighting design programs such as Relux, Lighting Reality and Dialux all use a European native file format (LDT) but will import IES data. This sounds good, but due to fundamental differences between the American and European measurement systems it is not possible to automatically convert from one to the other correctly. A major difference between the American and European systems is the definition of dimensions, for example length in the American system is sometimes length and other times width in the European system! Another difference is the definition of the angles measured, for example 0째 Azimuth in the American system is sometimes 0째 and other times 90째 in the European system. Taking these two inconsistencies shows how easy it is to end up with a data file where the photometric distribution does not align correctly with the physical dimensions.

Relux Training The only approved Relux trainer for the UK & Ireland

42 Partners www.42partners.com 42@42partners.com

There are other differences between IES and LDT formats, IES files have only one set of dimensions; the size of the luminous area. LDT files have 2 sets of dimensions, the luminous area and the overall physical size of the luminaire. In converting from IES to LDT this extra data has to be added. This may not seem important but imagine a small downlight incorporated into a 600 x 600 panel. As a correctly formatted LDT file this would neatly fit into a reflected ceiling grid with each luminaire occupying one tile whereas a badly converted IES file would have a small circular luminaire floating anywhere on the ceiling. Most lighting design programs produce a data sheet showing the information contained in the file, the data sheet would show incorrect dimensions in the case of a poorly converted IES file. This may not be critical but is not showing your product in the best possible light.

Data - Deliverance

How do I improve the appearance of my data ?

42 Partners have for many years been the gold standard for presentation of photometric data, our test reports and data files being effectively the industry standard. Although no longer testing, we still continue to develop our own software for producing reports and data files. Developments in our capabilities mean that we can supply information in new formats such as Revit family data, we will continue to improve this service to take account of any new developments requiring photometric data in other formats. 42 Partners can reprocess any photometric data, modify the data, and add any extra information required. You can have data that enables you to market your products with full confidence that they are presented in the best possible light.

RETAIL

Shop ‘til you drop Whether it’s a brand new store or a refurbishment project, there’s no excuse for shoddy, inefficient lighting

T

here’s no better way to create a perfectly lit store than by starting from the ground up, and no better place to showcase good lighting than an interior design showroom, so when Staffan Tollgard opened its flagship Design Store in Chelsea, lighting was high on the agenda. Tollgard worked with Atrium on the lighting scheme, which utilises a range of Flos’ most collectable decorative pieces alongside products from the Soft and Architectural ranges. The light-filled space has been designed to provide a new kind of retail experience: personalised,

calm and complete. The bright, open showroom space showcases a range of Flos classics, such as the sleek Snoopy - a design from 1967 with an eclectic 60’s vibe, with a Carrera marble base and enamelled reflector. Other celebrated designs such as the Taccia, and Taraxacum by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioini are used in the store. Elsewhere, newer products such as Patricia Urquiola’s Tatou series of lights have been used to create ambience and playful lighting, particularly in bedroom settings. Flos’ Soft Architecture range is used throughout the store, and works particularly well in the bathrooms and cinema space, showing how these fittings can bridge a gap between architectural and decorative lighting in a residential setting. The main spaces have concealed fittings, integrated and hidden within the fabric of the interior.

The end result is a beautifullylit space that brings just the right level of drama and impact’

The Softprofile Deco Starck Large designed by Philippe Stark, frames a large circular painting, making for striking visual impact for customers entering the store. Seamless application of lighting can also be seen with the Teardrop by Calvi Brambilla. The recessed light source is hidden deep within the fitting for maximum glare control. A solution for the high ceilings was to use architectural spotlights, such as Find Me, by Jorge Herrera. These decorative cylinders allow for customised effects and are set in channels that are then positioned among the decorative Flos pendants. ‘The huge range in Flos’ lighting catalogue meant for every question we asked of the space, they had the right lighting answer,’ explained Monique Tollgard. ‘Our collaboration with Flos and Atrium has resulted in a space that is lit like a magnificent home, but works like a luxury retail space’. ››

INSIDE OUT ...

Clean lines and sleek shapes make for great car design, and these same values have been emulated in the lighting design at Volkswagen’s De Kimpe car dealership in Brussels. The smooth but powerful, focused light from Ridi Lighting’s Linia Flat provides the perfect light to showcase the vehicles, while at the same time improving the building’s energy efficiency. The spacious showroom features seventy fittings; the simple design of the fitting means there’s no visual clutter overhead, keeping the customer’s attention on the cars on display. The precise white light from the wide beam spreads an even light across the vehicles, creating a clean and bright appearance throughout the showroom.

ALL CHANGE

Of course, not every designer gets a whole new store to light; most are faced with replacing lighting as part of a wider refurbishment programme that will probably include an attempt to make it more energy efficient. In these instances, product choice is vital if projected savings are to be realised. When the owners of Göteborg Landvetter International Airport in Sweden decided to refurbish its duty free area, a range of lighting challenges had to be overcome to deliver a retail environment that looked attractive, was costefficient, and delivered significant maintenance and energy savings over the long term. The owner wanted to create an ‘all in one’ shopping area, where the Duty Free store space formed part of the airport’s modern, streamlined commercial area. As well as using the lighting to create drama, sub-divide the space, and establish the brand identity

Gothenburg Airport was one of the more challenging from a lighting point of view, as there was a large amount of natural lighting from the central atrium skylight’

The energy saving capability of Linia Flat has allowed De Kimpe to achieve an estimated power saving of 4.8KW per hour, and helped to build on a new ‘green’ image for both the showroom and the company. ‘The Linia Flat is perfect for this type of installation; the high output, high efficiency and fast easy installation make it ideal for the spacious showroom environment,’ explained Mike Attard, MD of RIDI Lighting. ‘De Kimpe chose the wide beam mode, allowing for the even distribution of light across the whole vehicle display area. The pre-wired system also allows use of spot and track modules to be incorporated.’ The slimline design of the fitting ensures a modern, minimalist feel to the showroom, while still creating an effective and efficient light source during the day, and into the evening.

of key players, The Nuance Group – owners of The Duty Free Store – wanted the lighting to be energy efficient, help customers navigate their way around, and spotlight best sellers and special promotions within store. James Poore, creative director at UK-based lighting design consultancy, JPLD, commented: ‘I have done a wide range of retail lighting projects for The Nuance Group. Gothenburg Airport was one of the more challenging from a lighting point of view, as there was a large amount of natural lighting from the central atrium skylight, as well as a suspended grid system ceiling. Working closely with The Design Solution, we were able to come up with a scheme that not only delivered significant energy savings using, amongst other things, Megaman LED lamp technology, but also met the client’s requirements for beauty and impact – no matter the time of day or night.’ To accommodate the

combination of a central skylight and the suspended grid system ceiling, the lighting solution was designed around a family of fittings, which would work in the various areas, while retaining a cohesive appearance overall. Energy consumption, and its reduction, were key requirements of the lighting brief, and it was decided that Megaman’s LED AR111 reflector equivalent was the replacement of choice for the majority of fittings; delivering both in terms of performance and cost. In total, 284 15W G53 AR111 LED 45° 4000k lamps were used throughout the Duty Free store to replace 75W halogen AR111 lamps. Thomas McCrave, global head of shop design for The Nuance Group explained: ‘By cleverly mixing LED lighting with linear fluorescent uplighters and metal halide pendants in the main transit route, James was able to reduce the energy demands of the scheme by over 5.6kW, which were then realised in lighting load and HVAC reductions. ‘As well as significant energy efficiencies, the end result is a beautifully-lit space that brings just the right level of drama and impact to the Duty Free store.’ n CON TACT Atrium Megaman JPLD Ridi Lighting

nergy efficient LED lighting by Cree has been specified by US retail giant, Walgreens’, for its outlet in Goodyear, Arizona. The 14,820sq ft store features Cree LED troffers, linear luminaires and downlights in a bid to save the retailer thousands of dollars in annual energy and maintenance costs. ‘Cree’s products deliver among the best light levels in the industry, matched with superior efficacy, which helps lower our total cost of ownership since less power is needed to illuminate all levels of our shelves over alternative light fixtures,’ explained Jamie Meyers, manager of sustainability for Walgreens. ‘We had been looking to add LED technology to our corporate sustainability program for a while, and with the successful Cree lighting implementation at the Goodyear store, it’s clear that it’s time to roll this out on a larger level. We are planning to incorporate LED lighting into all of our new stores, moving forward.’ Supporting Walgreens’ commitment to PURE (People

Using Resources Efficiently), which focuses on environmental sustainability by managing energy consumption, the Cree LED lighting system allows the retailer to reduce its energy use and operating costs without compromising on light quality. The CS18 and CS14 LED linear luminaires specified deliver strong vertical light levels throughout the sales floor, while CR24 troffers, designed to last 100,000 hours, help reduce energy consumption and maintenance needs in the pharmacy. ‘Our innovative LED lighting delivers real value by supporting the bottom line. Retailers no longer need to look to outdated technologies for a comprehensive lighting solution,’ said Steve Barlow, senior vice president of lighting sales, Cree. ‘LED technology is the perfect complement to corporate social responsibility programs for retailers like Walgreens, that are exemplifying the benefits of highquality illumination with significant energy savings.’ Powered by the company’s TrueWhite technology, CS18 and CR24 architectural troffers deliver 90+ CRI, providing exceptional colour rendering to showcase merchandise in their truest colours. ‘With Cree, the colours of our merchandise pop to such an extent that customers can easily see items on the bottom shelves,’ added Meyers. ‘There is a distinctively different feel when you walk into this store. Cree’s LED lighting has

a better quality to it. It’s crisper and cleaner. That’s valuable to us, particularly as a retailer trying to make our product look as appealing as possible.’ Lighting has been an integral part of Walgreens since its first store opened in 1901, which was advertised as featuring “New, bright lights to create a cheerful, warm ambiance,” a marked departure from the dimly-lit stores of its competitors at the time.

Popping up near you Megaman and Paviom Global are toasting their joint success at winning the Restaurant & Bar Design Award 2013/2014 in the Pop up Bar category. The SLEEP Bar was created by Nir Gilad of Nous Design for the exhibition. The aim was to create a bar that used clean lines and a dramatic focal point to draw exhibition attendees. The centrepiece was a dramatic steel sculpture, created by artist, Vlad Tenu, that was lit using Paviom Lofoot floor and wall mounted luminaires containing 15W AR111 LED GU10 lamps. The bar area incorporated a Tom Dixon Etch Web and Etch Shade pendant arrangement, using Megaman’s Classic and IncandaLED lamps. The remainder of the space featured Modena track lights with 24w TECOH modules inside. The company’s lighting technology also illuminated the series of Laufen ceramic sinks, used by Nir Gilad to create the tiered effect for the bar. Ciaran Kiely, Megaman’s international project marketing manager, commented: ‘A lot of talented people were involved in creating this stunning pop up bar installation. ‘As well as the artistic skills of Nir, Vlad and Tom Dixon, Willmott Dixon and UBM were also involved in making sure that getting a drink at SLEEP was inspirational as well as refreshing!’

with lighting technicians and production electricians to come up with a re-useable, user-friendly solution to sticky, disposable alternatives.’ The Lightsock is quick to fit, having an elasticated skirt at one end that simply fits around the lens tube, and a drawstring fastening at the front that secures around the top hat or colour scroller, locking in any light spill. A mesh panel allows the scroller fan to function effectively, maintaining air circulation. This also acts as an additional dust guard, helping reduce the amount of dirt entering the scroller. The elasticated rear opening allows easy access to the colour runners.

Telensa, commented: ‘As energy costs soar and street lighting engineers embrace the use of LED technology, we want to show that our system delivers the features the market requires, and offers considerable savings of between 20-30 per cent over and above

the savings made from switching to LEDs.’ Responding to the requirement for dynamic dimming - the right light at the right time in the right place - Telensa has added adaptive lighting to allow the implementation of dimming programmes linked to traffic flow. This

has been successfully trialed in the US by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. ‘It is now possible to link the outputs from traffic detection systems directly to our CMS, and dynamically control the lighting based on real time traffic flow,’ added Gibson.

ne day, drugs may give way to light therapy in our continuing bid to achieve a healthy body. It may still sound a bit far-fetched, but I’m guessing man landing on the moon would have taken my granny by surprise, and with the advances in lighting technology we’re currently enjoying, it looks as if that day may be nearer than we think. Take, for instance, psoriasis: to most of us it’s something a few unlucky, itchy souls have, but to 125 million people around the world, it can literally be a living hell. Philips has tackled the problem headon, and has come up with BlueControl, a clinically tested, wearable device that uses blue LED light to control the symptoms. Thanks to the company’s rigorous testing processes, it is already available on prescription in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. Philips conducted two clinical trials in partnership with the University Hospital of Aachen. In the second trial, patients were treated for 12 weeks. The results showed a 50 per cent reduction of symptoms with no

negative side effects observed. BlueControl is easily integrated into a patient’s routine: worn on affected arms, legs, elbows and knees, the UV-free blue LED light therapy is enabled by 40 highintensity blue LEDs with tailored light settings. ‘Research proves that blue LED light treatment slows down rapid cell division and can also reduce inflammation,’ explained Matthias Born, head of clinical affairs for Philips. ‘This research has enabled us to develop, for the first time, an unprecedented treatment device that can make a real difference to the lives of sufferers of psoriasis vulgaris.’ LEDs for medical treatment require special features, which exceed those of conventional LEDs, including high intensities and tailored adjustments, such as pulsed LED light. While psoriasis may not be classed as painful (although sufferers would probably argue the point), one in five Europeans struggles with chronic pain, which adversely affects their daily lives.

Research proves that blue LED light treatment slows down rapid cell division and can also reduce inflammation HEALTHY

Osram has been working for some time on light therapies, and has designed a light therapy solution that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of patients suffering from chronic pain problems. Installed at the Interdisciplinary Pain Therapy Centre in Munich, the clinic is the world’s first pain centre to include biologically effective light in its therapy programme. Light therapy offers a supportive treatment to relieve pain and prompt the healing process. By providing patients with a concentrated dose of light of similar composition to daylight, the concept is expected to achieve positive results for patients with on-going conditions, such as arthritis and muscle inflammation. Expected benefits include better sleep, increased alertness during the day, and an overall improved physiological and psychological health. ‘We are really excited to be working with a clinic that is so forward-thinking, and hope that the treatment makes a real difference to those who have on-going

chronic pain problems,’ said Andreas Wojtysiak of Osram. ‘The solution has been designed to be both cost-efficient and adaptable for other pain centres, clinics and doctors’ practices, and we anticipate it being adopted at pain centres across the globe.’ The solution is based on LED and fluorescent light with an intelligent DALI control system, for the production of different light colours and patterns. Biologically effective illuminances of up to 4,000 lux are now possible in the physiotherapy and group therapy rooms, as well as the clinic’s reception and waiting area. This is eight times brighter than ordinary lighting in offices, for example, and close to natural daylight conditions. ‘We developed various concepts suited to different room sizes and arrangements, as well as varying light at different times of day,’ continued Wojtysiak. ‘The Pain Therapy Centre is currently examining scientifically the effects of innovative light systems on pain sufferers, and we hope that this new specialist lighting solution will

be a huge success.’ Prof. Thomas Tölle, director of the Interdisciplinary Pain Therapy Centre in Munich and president of the German Pain Society added: ‘If the light concept works in the manner we envisage in pain therapy, the next few years will certainly see it being established as a standard treatment for specific therapeutic units. ‘It could also be used in places where a high degree of concentration is required, for instance in schools or fire service control centres.’

STAY HEALTHY

Of course, poor lighting can work against the user, effectively making them ill, and the effects of bad lighting on workers’ cortisol levels has been well documented. An Institute for Building Efficiency report says: ‘Studies show that better light and more natural light can improve office worker productivity, improve health and wellbeing in medical facilities, and

improve school achievement. ‘The Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics at Carnegie Mellon identified 12 studies linking improved lighting design decisions with 0.7 to 23 per cent gains in individual productivity. ‘These studies measured productivity gains through increases in reading comprehension, letter processing speed, and a range of other tasks, as well as reduced absenteeism. ‘Another study compared two groups of people, one exposed to daylight, the other to artificial light, over several working days. People who were exposed to daylight were significantly more alert at the beginning of the evening, and subjects who were exposed to artificial light were significantly sleepier at the end of the evening. On top of sleepiness, the study found that cortisol levels drop significantly under artificial or poor lighting conditions.’

Fundamental to health and wellbeing MHA Lighting has also been studying the benefits of LED lighting on health and wellbeing for some time. MD, Tom Harrison makes the case: ‘The benefits of LED lighting go beyond the sales literature, as studies from Netherlands-based Maastricht University show how lighting can have a positive impact on the healing environment. This research, along with other studies, show light has a positive effect on health, mood and wellbeing, not just for people in a care environment, but also for healthy people. Further exploration into how lighting affects people’s wellbeing and performance levels indicates that the human eye and brain are very sensitive to light quality, where colour temperature, absence from flicker, glare, and hum, as well as correct colour rendering are all key factors. ‘LED lighting - unlike other artificial light sources - does not produce potentially harmful heat, infrared or UV radiation. This indicates that LED light sources could be important to a healthy environment. Additionally, certain wavelengths are known to be conducive to certain biochemical reactions, such as hair growth, production of vitamin D, moods and emotions, as well as the levels of complex dopamines and enzymes. ‘The incidence of SAD - seasonal affective disorder - is well documented in northern latitudes during the shorter daylight hours of winter months. The effective treatment is for sufferers to sit in front of a suitable wavelength light source to top up the body’s light deficiency. ‘Apart from being a subtle but significant environmental factor, light is fundamental to virtually all living cells, and thus careful selection and deployment of the right lighting conditions can make a big difference to health and wellbeing, both physically and mentally. This is particularly important for patient recovery. ‘LED lighting is a more controllable type of illumination and overcomes many of the drawbacks and disadvantages of existing conventional light sources, as all forms of electromagnetic radiation have an effect on living organisms. Light - as well as temperature, humidity, ventilation, air quality, barometric pressure, vibration, sound, electrical charge, negative ion concentration and magnetic fields - are all conditions with direct effects on the human body.’

STEINEL (UK) LTD 01733 366700 | www.steinel.co.uk High bay sensor launched for reduced lighting maintenance burden in warehouses Steinel (UK) Ltd, the market leader in lighting sensor technology, is launching the HBS 200, an easy-to-install, indoor occupancy sensor, which can unlock major savings on energy and maintenance in high-ceilinged industrial applications. The HBS 200 is designed to be highly sensitive even when mounted at a height of 14m. With a five-year warranty as standard, it uses passive infrared (PIR) sensor technology to provide a no-hassle means to automatically cut out the energy that’s wasted by lighting spaces when they aren’t in use. Reducing the burden placed upon high bay lighting not only reduces energy bills, it can also cut down on regular lamp replacement, reducing the need to undertake difficult maintenance at height. The HBS 200 can be mounted onto high bay luminaires or junction boxes, reducing wiring needs and making for a straightforward installation process. It provides 360-degree coverage, with a 30m x 4m detection zone, which means that a single sensor is able to cover a long aisle or passageway.

The right solution everytime

LIGHTING affects our mood, impacts on our wellbeing, improves productivity and can keep us safe. The team at MHA Lighting believe that everyone should have the best lit environment achievable – whether that’s at work, in a public place or on the streets. We have an award-winning technical team who are passionate about creating meaningful innovations that provide the RIGHT lighting solution for each individual’s requirements. But what sets us apart from other lighting providers? Three things: • Our technology • Our commitment to providing the best lighting solution for each individual customer • Our customer service In other words we don’t just have the ability to do it – we also have the passion to ensure we work with the client to deliver the right solution for them first time. MHA Lighting has helped numerous organisations improve their lit environment AND reduce their energy bills. At

Manchester Airport, MHA lighting’s installations have delivered 63 per cent energy savings for the airport. With award-winning low energy luminaires and ability to design bespoke solutions, MHA Lighting has become one of the airport’s preferred suppliers, supplying more than £500,000 worth of energy-saving lighting products to the airport in the last 18 months. Andy Sheridan, services facilities manager at Manchester Airport, said: “Often no-one manufacturers the luminaire we want. We’re always finding that there are areas that don’t seem to be covered by the main manufacturers. For example, when we did our car parks we struggled to find a true retrofit replacement for a Low Bay application and we struggled with the flexibility of some of the major manufacturers. As a result we chose to work with MHA Lighting as they offered us a superb bespoke solution. For those niche areas where we struggled, we’ve been quite lucky in that we can now work closely with MHA Lighting. They have become an invaluable design outfit that can fill all the important gaps for us.” Since late 2010 MHA has built a portfolio of Blue Chip commercial clients and public sector organisations, including: The Trafford Centre, GlaxoSmithKline, Scott Safety (A Tyco company), the NHS, Birmingham NEC, Greater Manchester Police, Manchester Airport Group, Newcastle Airport, Birmingham International Airport, Budgens, SPAR, Londis, various Local Authorities, Reckitt Benckiser and Chevron-Texaco. To date these clients have been delighted with major energy savings of between 70-80% and equivalent Co2 reductions. They have been further impressed by light quality and other associated benefits of our LED lighting ranging from zero maintenance, long life and the cleanliness of our sealed fittings.

MHA has recently completed a number of projects for global cable tie manufacturer HellermannTyton who demand superb light quality and uniformity to aid their precision working. Chris Brookes, HSE Officer at HellermannTyton, said: “We had looked to four well-known lighting companies to get different quotes for these projects, but only MHA actually surveyed the areas and discussed our specific lighting needs with us. From the very beginning their attention to detail was amazing – nothing was too much trouble and everything was about us ultimately getting the right solution for the individual application. We are absolutely delighted with the results and can honestly say that we got what we wanted.” MHA Lighting is an award-winning lighting manufacturer based in Greater Manchester. MHA Lighting is the only LED manufacturer to shine light sideways into encapsulation avoiding direct contact with the eye and providing a safe and efficient light output. We also use acrylic rods to amplify and control the light output, reducing the number of LEDs required. This means we can use high power LEDs, draw less current and have no need to diffuse the output. We have overcome the problem of directionality to achieve a light distribution of such high uniformity that it is better than traditional fittings. The flexibility of this technology allows MHA Lighting to directly replace fluorescent fittings and achieve BS and LG standards. soffit casts dramatic shadows onto the walls, creating depth and a sense of urbanism. The strip corridor lighting channels a brightness and energy through its unpredictable layout of tubes. However, this contrasts with the sudden uniformity of the crisp 4,000K luminaires that perfectly line the soffits of each of the dance studios; this transformation from unsystematic to methodical balances the freedom of the corridor with the focus of study within the studios. With play and relaxation vital elements to support and inspire dance, the school provides ground floor, circular beds that students can step on to and lie out after a session in the studio. PNLD integrated coloured lights into the edges of these beds, drawing out the playfulness and creating warmth to encourage calm. The Urdang logo is reinforced throughout the academy, and PNLD complemented this commitment to bold illustration by illuminating the screen wall to showcase the graphic, ensuring that the light fixtures are hidden to draw the focus solely onto the brand. An important part of the brief was to keep lighting installation and maintenance

Creating the perfect lighting to complement London’s Urdang Academy

P

aul Nulty Lighting Design (PNLD) has completed the interior lighting for the Urdang Academy using an asymmetrical application of florescent tubes and spotlights to recreate the sense of an industrial past. The practice, which has a reputation for pushing the boundaries in innovative lighting concepts, was brought in by Caulder Moore, when it needed a lighting solution that would emphasise the school’s industrial interior through cutting edge lighting design. As part of the brief, PNLD was asked to express the school’s vibrant language through light, and deliver a concept that would capture the various forms of musical and dance teaching. With contemporary, street, theatre and jazz just some of the dance taught at the school, the different musical characteristics needed to be represented through mood and atmosphere. In response, PNLD has created an illuminated representation of the flow and beat, and rise and fall of musical scores, using an irregular display of fluorescent luminaires and spotlights to convey the punctuation of dance. The lighting along the length of the corridors creates permeability, pulling students through into the main circulation zone, emphasising the sense that people are moving fluidly through the space. With Urdang’s cool and edgy East End reputation, PNLD’s lighting approach complements and highlights the raw, industrial nature of the materials used for the interior design. An illuminated mesh

costs low and use durable fixtures that would survive the vivacity of their environment. In response, PNLD has utilised all low-energy luminaires with fluorescent and LED sources that provide longevity and durability. Claire Hamill, lighting designer, said: ‘As one of the most powerful influences on atmosphere and mood, it was crucial that the lighting concept delivered a solution that not only stimulated the students but energised them. ‘Urdang’s brand is very clear; it is edgy and vibrant and we used this to create a lighting language that spoke to the students in a way that motivates and drives them in what they do.’

PEOPLE

MINUTES WITH

Danny Kalina Eng. Daniel Kalina is the senior lighting engineer and manager of the Lighting Design Center, and CTO of Gaash Lighting, an innovative manufacturer and developer of high quality lighting solutions for the commercial and industrial sectors. A graduate of CSUN in the US, he is a well respected, leading lighting engineer in Israel, and a member of several committees in the field of lighting at the Standards Institute of Israel, and a member of IESNA

What is your favourite light source, and why? Incandescent and halogen provide the best colour rendering, appearance and sparkly feeling. When energy factors and maintenance are critical, then ceramic metal halide would be my next choice.

Gaash Lighting’s Danny Kalina shares his thoughts about the industry, and lighting technology of the future

Should more be done to control light pollution, or is it not really a big issue as far as you’re concerned? It is imperative to do so; not only for ecological reasons, but also due to the fact that it means energy savings… and what is wrong with children growing up in big cities, knowing that there are stars in the sky? Who is your favourite designer of anything that’s not lighting? Luc Donckerwolke, designer at Lamborghini. Which lighting project would you like to have worked on? The London 2012 Olympics’ sporting facilities. After the huge changes LED has brought to the industry, what do you think will be the next big advance? LED luminaires that really meet

human-centric concepts, as well as their integration with control systems – both general and personalised. Do you see a time when all lighting is sustainable? If so, how can we start working towards achieving it? Yes, but it must be done carefully, based on codes and standards. What trends do you forecast in domestic lighting? Multi-system integration with LED lighting, as well as artificial light colour-changing, when there’s a lack of daylight, for good circadian cycle compensation. Why do you think lighting is bucking the general world industrial trend and showing such strong growth? Lighting is moving from the conservative industry it once was to become a very dynamic solid-state industry. But users and designers have to be cautious enough to keep meeting human needs for lighting. Chandelier or candle? Chandelier!

The message is clear — at >500cd/m2 Mexodus stands out in brightly lit environments. Self-Test and DALI Mexodus functions as a stand-alone Self-Test exit sign or can be connected to a DALI system. The exit-signs can be configured to provide non-maintained or switched maintained operation.

MAXIMUM SAFETY In addition to using 3-chip devices each LED package is connected in such a way that if one LED fails the others continue to illuminate the legend panel.

The specially screened light-conducting panel ensures a uniform illumination — with a viewing distance in excess of 21metres — and due to their high luminance of >500cd/m2 are ideal for use in atriums, reception areas and for brightly lit interior applications. The Mexodus luminaires provide 3 hour emergency duration and incorporate a self-contained Self-Test facility plus fully interoperable DALI addressable capability ideal for the seamless integration into new or existing installations.
