e recently spent an entire weekend without power at home. As we live in the back of beyond, there’s no gas or mains drainage (seriously - piped water is still something of a novelty), we are totally dependant on electricity, so no power meant NO power. There were upsides to our predicament though - can’t cook, won’t cook (not even a slice of toast), so all meals were taken at the local hostelry. That was a real bonus, as was no hot water, no washing up – hmmm, but no hot water also meant no shower. Mind you, as the hairdryer wouldn’t function, no shower meant not looking like a mad bag lady in a thunderstorm…. All in all, it wouldn’t have been too bad, but the one thing that drove me to utter distraction was the lack of light. I am a notoriously bad sleeper, and often spend the wee small hours doing anything other than snoring, so as almost everything else was off the agenda, I was left with reading by candlelight, or sewing by candlelight – neither of which appears to be good for the old mince pies. I’m not sure how pre-National Grid England coped with candles and gas mantles, but here, it was definitely akin to Blake’s ‘dark satanic mills’, and not an experience to be repeated any time soon, I’d hope. Here’s to a light - and ever-so-bright - summer.

ogether with alliance members, Johnson Controls, The Climate Group, and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, GE Lighting again partnered on a series of roundtable sessions to explore high level issues around energy efficiency. Taking place from 30 – 31 March in Monaco, the debates provided a vital platform for the promotion of energy efficiency policies and business practices in the run up to next year’s biennial Euro-Mediterranean Energy Efficiency Forum (EEF). The sessions offered a one-off chance for policy makers, NGOs, and business leaders to meet and identify ways to unlock the potential of energy efficiency, to address a range of challenges from climate change and environmental resource pressures to jobs, competitiveness, and human health. This year, innovation in technology, online communications, and business models were at the core of the event,
entitled Bringing Innovation to Energy Efficiency. The forum consisted of three roundtable discussions, centred on technology innovation, financing and business models, and social meets efficiency – the latter moderated by Agostino Renna, president and CEO of GE Lighting, EMEA. Following the discussions, delegates had a chance to consider how the innovations will shape ‘The Road to Paris’, referring to the UN Climate Summit scheduled for December in Paris (COP21). Renna commented: ‘The energy efficiency discussion has moved on from simply thinking about switching to lower energy products and systems. The smart possibilities offered by new technology mean we need to think in much bigger terms now, by rethinking business structures, and creating intelligent infrastructures that deliver outcome based solutions at the same time as saving energy.’

Appointments Lighting controls specialist, BEG has appointed Tracy Whiteman to the post of sales manager. Whiteman will be responsible for generating business opportunities in Scotland, the North East, and Yorkshire, supporting the company’s wholesalers and distributors in the region, and working on new projects. Having previously represented brands, including Concord, Whiteman is highly experienced in the lighting market. Speaking about her appointment, she said: ‘I’m delighted to be joining a company that is so well respected in the lighting industry. ‘Many organisations are turning to LED lighting so they can become more energy efficient. Using occupancy and presence sensors as a lighting control is the best way of reducing energy bills, so, I am looking forward to my new role with a company that is leading the way with this technology.’ Applelec has announced the appointment of Sandi Moolman, who joins the company in the newly created role of business development manager for the South of England. Following a career, focussed on architectural product specification, she was previously responsible for LED sales in ThyssenKrupp’s role as a distributor for SloanLED’s modules. Moolman commented: ‘After many years spent working for large multi-national organisations, I was keen to find a role within a smaller, more team-orientated company, which is looking to develop its international presence. ‘My experience working with architectural and design agencies will be put to good use.’ Managing director, Ian Drinkwater, added: ‘Sandi has already made a strong impression here at Applelec, where her drive and enthusiasm is infectious. With an 18-year history working with companies at every stage of a project lifespan, Sandi will be able to support our clients from initial design stages through to the construction and fabrication aspects of each installation.’ Zeta Specialist Lighting has appointed Adrian Dennis as managing director. He joined the company as sales and marketing director 18 months ago, with a brief to establish and execute a sales and marketing strategy to raise the profile of the brand, and accelerate sales growth. His appointment was a key part of the company’s strategic three-year plan, targeting a five-fold increase in size. Phil Shadbolt, Group chairman and CEO said: ‘Adrian’s vision and expertise has been instrumental in driving the business forward. We have established a firm foothold in a number of sectors. As we enter phase two of the strategic plan, I am confident that, under Adrian’s leadership as MD, Zeta Specialist Lighting will continue to go from strength to strength.’ Commenting on his appointment Dennis said: ‘Last year saw us increase in size and turnover, beyond our initial projections. I am very much looking forward to continuing to work with the team, driving the business forward to achieve our future objectives for growth and, hopefully, exceeding our projected targets for 2015.’ TheisCraft Lighting Controls has appointed Mark Willmott as its UK sales manager. A qualified electrical engineer, Willmott has a wealth of experience in both specification and lighting controls, having worked for Dynalite and Schneider Electric. As TheisCraft continues to establish links with M&E consultants, lighting designers, and electrical contractors in and around London and the Home Counties, he will take responsibility for the growth of the UK business. Jon Theis commented on the new role: ‘This appointment sees another landmark in the continuing growth and success of the business, and will allow us to develop stronger relationships within the existing markets and look at new market opportunities.’
iGuzzini votes…

Guzzini’s board of directors have nominated Andrea Sasso as CEO, and Giovanni Tamburi from TIPO, as a new board member. Sasso, CEO of the Fimag Group – Finanziaria Mariano Guzzini S.p.A. since May 2013, has officially replaced Antonio Santi, who has reached the end of his contractual mandate. After a 40-year career in the company, Santi leaves, having contributed to the improvement of the entire iGuzzini community, helping the company expand internationally, and develop important technical and cultural competences. ‘Our company has always believed in a professional managerial system as an opportunity to attract top people,’
commented president, Adolfo Guzzini. ‘A history that has seen Antonio Santi as a central figure for the managerial development in iGuzzini, first as general director, and then as CEO, carrying in different historic moments, Harvey Luce to the current day iGuzzini. ‘Together we developed a strategy that put light as a technology, at the service of mankind, for a real improvement in personal, working, and social conditions that today is expressed in social innovation through lighting. ‘Our most heartfelt thanks go to Antonio for having helped us, by believing in our family’s projects, to become an industry excellence in the in Italy and in Europe.’
Congratulations again – and again Osram Opto Semiconductors has been selected as a winner of the PACE Awards, organised by Automotive News, and one of the leading prizes for innovations in the automotive sector. The Award is in recognition of the Oslon Black Flat product family. These multichip LEDs for front headlamps can generate more light from a small package than any other comparable product, giving automotive and headlamp manufacturers greater design flexibility. This marks the third time that Osram Opto Semiconductors has won the coveted award, once again
for innovation in new products, components, or systems that have significant market impact and act as game changers in the automotive industry. ‘This award shows, yet again, that Osram LEDs stand for quality and innovation,’ said Peter Knittl, director, automotive LED at Osram. ‘They enable us to generate entirely new headlamp solutions in collaboration with our partners in the headlamp and automotive industries. Since its first white interior LED applications in 2002, Osram has been the most recognised opto-semiconductor company in the history of the PACE awards.’

PIE has been appointed principal contractor of the £2m, A55 Pen Y Clip tunnel refurbishment. The company will be working with Philips Lighting to introduce LED lighting technology into the tunnel, which is expected to reduce energy and emissions by up to 50 per cent. The scope of work involves the design, supply and installation of the LED lighting scheme, and infrastructure upgrades. This includes the electrical and mechanical services, covering the installation of the 900m linear support grid and containment, fitting the LED linear base and boost lighting system, along with final testing and commissioning. Steven Nanda, MD of industrial services at SPIE UK comments: ‘We are thrilled that we have been chosen to manage the upgrade of the Pen Y Clip tunnel. This is a major contract; the Welsh Government’s Ancillary Framework Agreement offers just five quality contractors
exclusivity in tendering for roadside and tunnel communications, mechanical and electrical works, and associated civil engineering works throughout Wales.’ It’s not the first time SPIE has been involved in a project at the Pen-Y-Clip tunnel; the Group was involved in the original design more than twenty years ago. Participating in this initial development placed the company in good stead to undertake this refurbishment opportunity. Geraint Jones, project manager, Welsh Transport Technology Consultancy said: ‘With site familiarity and experience with the structure, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of tunnel lighting installations, SPIE’s ability to manage the task was clear. It was this, alongside the successful completion of seven similar schemes in the UK, which led to SPIE being awarded the role of principal contractor of this particular contract.’
(Almost) burnt offering A traditional fish and chip shop in Beer, East Devon, recently took the step of switching from halogen to LED lamps from Kosnic, and is making energy savings of £700, with an initial investment of only £70. Mark Beckenham, owner of the venue, explained further: ‘I had heard a lot about how LED lighting could save on energy bills, so finally decided to replace the
lighting in my shop. It is only has a small square footage, so I didn’t expect the savings to be very big. However, when I got a saving of £700 from our energy company, I couldn’t quite believe it!’ The original fifteen 65W GU10 halogens were removed and simply replaced with Kosnic LED PowerSpot 4.5W GU10 halogen equivalents at a cost of approximately £70.
But cost savings weren’t the only benefit, as Beckenham continued: ‘An additional benefit of changing to LED lamps was that, whilst changing the lighting, we realised that the mains wiring cable had become too close to the very hot halogens, and had begun to melt. By making the switch to LEDs, we not only saved a lot of money, but it also helped unearth a problem that could have caused us a major fire!’
The future of smart Building Blocks for Smart Lighting Designs, is the subject of the fifth LED professional Symposium+Expo (LpS), which covers the whole LED lighting value chain, in Bregenz, Austria this autumn. From 22-24 September, delegates will be able to attend more than 60 lectures on lighting system design, and hands-on workshops from EPIC, LG Chem, and Luger Research. Lighting system design, based on LED and OLED technologies, is challenging. Successful LED lighting solutions require an holistic design and engineering approach. Hence, it is necessary to incorporate the latest technologies, smart systems, standards, advanced functionalities, and new user behaviors. The LpS program starts with keynotes from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Zumtobel, and Lumileds, providing an overview of current trends and technologies. Prof. Zary Segall from The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, will open the event, addressing the topics of semantic, smart. and connected lighting, driven by the trends of human centric lighting and the IoT. Those trends are also addressed by internationally renowned lighting designer, Rogier van der Heide, from Zumtobel in Austria. The third keynote will be given by Jy Bhardwaj from Lumileds in the US. He will discuss future trends for solid-state lighting. 150 – and counting… Recolight has announced the signing of its one hundred and fiftieth producer member. Adrian Willis, membership development manager, commented on the news: ‘Our growing membership allows us to provide unique benefits. Our integrated waste lamp and luminaire collection service helps members, and their customers to ensure they are fully compliant with WEEE legislation. On average, we have achieved an annual compound membership growth of 16 per cent from 2009 to 2014. Recolight’s producer membership has increased, thanks to the support of founder members, which include GE lighting, Havells-Sylvania, Osram, and Philips.’

Delightful design TL casts the spotlight on a real talent of the future, and hopefully one that the lighting design community can tempt to join it when she graduates next month

ack in 2013, Napier University design student, Kate Caven was selected as one of the ten finalists in Delight in Light. So, how did she get involved? ‘This competition, set up by the lighting industry, provides a platform for young designers like myself, and gives us an opportunity to get an insight into, and understanding of the industry. ‘It was a competition, which seemed like such a big opportunity to let slip away, and as a student designer you need to get yourself noticed, let people know who you are, and what you can do. ‘For this project, we didn’t have to make a prototype; it was to show our computer skills. However the competition rules said that if you were to become a finalist, a prototype would be needed - so I made one!’ During the summer of 2013, Caven spent time sourcing materials in order to get a prototype made, in the hope that her design would be selected to go on to the next stage. A wise move, as it happens. ‘It was also a good opportunity for me to experiment with materials, and building a prototype, as I know now how important this is for a designer,’ she explained. ‘To get an email saying, “Congratulations, you have been picked as one of the 10 finalists” is such an achievement, especially for me, as I was only in my second year at university, with lots still to learn. ‘The opportunity, which was given to me was overwhelming - a trip to London; my light displayed at Earls Court during 100% Design… The experience was amazing, I loved the atmosphere at 100% Design, seeing all the new designs, meeting new people, and showing what I was capable of.’ Caven spent the first half of 2014 in Norway on an exchange programme. ‘This opportunity, given to me by Napier University, is one I won’t forget,’ she enthused. ‘The exchange taught me a lot about living in a different country, and experiencing the culture. I enjoyed every minute of this exchange. I love meeting new people, and making contacts in different countries, as I feel it allows you to grow, not only as a designer, but as a person’. She studied at Oslo and Akershus University (HIOA) in Lillestrom, and while there, took the opportunity to hone her design skills further, by designing Fortryllet, the light that propelled her into the competition’s final.

Fortryllet [Norweigian for ‘enchanted’], is an ethereal creation, featuring a three-dimensional oak tree, populated with mythical creatures. The clever choice of material (Perspex acrylic), means the laser-cut creatures glow in different shades as the fitting’s colour-changing sequence progresses. So where did the inspiration for her light come from? ‘I like how stories capture people’s imagination, and how coloured light could give the user a positive experience with the story being brought to life. It’s a solution to a more aesthetically pleasing mood light. ‘I really love to create products that appear simple, but whilst investigating, the user will be fascinated by the high level of aesthetic detail, and that’s what I brought to Fortryllet. ‘The detail makes it more intriguing, eye-catching, and enchanting when the light is switched on. This design like me - wants to make people smile’. Caven was lucky enough to see her design making people smile when it was displayed by Holloways of Ludlow, at the company’s London showroom earlier this year. Owner, Mark Holloway has a personal passion and commitment to support young

talent, and decided to show the finalists’ work as part of the company’s thirtieth anniversary celebrations. ‘I was very honoured to be part of Holloways of Ludlow’s thirtieth anniversary. It is great that Mark Holloway has a passion to support young designers. The opportunity given to us by Holloways has been great, and I have no doubt it will help propel us into successful careers.’ The course she’s taking at University covers product design, but what area does she intend to specialise in, and why that particular course? ‘I knew from high school product design was a subject I wanted to explore further. When I enrolled onto the course. I was only just finding my feet in terms of what kind of designer I wanted to be, and where my skills lay. ‘The course has been exceptional, and covered a wide array of areas within the field of product design. I have been able to embark on many different projects that cover different skills such as model making,
computer-based projects, hand rendering and, in my opinion, most importantly, communication and presentation skills. The course is very open, and with design being such a wide field, it allows students to explore anything from art-based to technical projects. ‘Two of my favourite projects have been lighting design projects - one in the second year, and then Fortryllet. Both proved successful, having been chosen as a finalist in Delight in Light two years running. Being involved in the competitions has opened my eyes to the possibilities, and what area I would like to specialise in and learn more about. I feel that product design incorporating lighting is definitely a very exciting area to be involved in, and I want to further my career in this area’.

How did the design for Fortryllet come about, and from a technical point what influenced the choice of materials and light source? ‘Fortryllet is an enchanting piece, and was always designed to be so. The enchanting aesthetic is what drove my decisions for finish and, importantly, the construction. Broken down, Fortryllet is actually a very simple piece; it is the clever intricacy that makes it enchanting. This intricacy was only achievable by utilising laser-cutting technology. This method of manufacture was the main driving force in the material choice. I knew from the outset it had to be a material with a bit of magic, something that would allow light to travel through and create atmosphere. As glass cannot be cut on a laser cutter,
perspex acrylic became the obvious choice. This design was created on my six-month exchange to Norway; my partner Jack, who is on the same course as me, came to Norway. He is technically minded, which was great to bounce ideas and come to a successful solution.’ So does she plan to continue her studies, and learn about the technical side of lighting spaces? ‘I have done some research into those areas, however I know there is so much to learn and would love to get a deeper understanding of the subject.’ When asked about herself, Caven said: ‘I enjoy good quality products that have a little something else something special, something that catches the user’s imagination, and creates a more relatable product.
‘Meeting new people, especially within the world of design, is something I find incredibly interesting, as it becomes very apparent how many different styles and methods of tackling a brief there are. By meeting new people and learning their methods, or having the ability to work with, or for, them, I hope to go from strength to strength within my career as a designer, and continue to create beautiful products that engross the user. It sounds as if Kate Caven is the ‘sponge’ every forward thinking lighting design outfit needs – willing to learn, keen as mustard, very, very talented, and a thoroughly nice young lady to boot. Make a note of her name – I suspect we’ll be hearing a lot more from her in the future.

Human-centricity Lighting offices for an ageing workforce
P
hilips recently published eye-opening research findings that showed workers aged 40 and above need in the region of five times as much light as their twentysomething colleagues in order to perform the same tasks. Bearing in mind that we are all likely to be working into our dotage – retirement having become something our grandparents once enjoyed – it will ultimately fall to building owners to ensure that staff of all ages have adequate lighting to complete their tasks. Philips has called on the EU to revise the 2011 code for lighting requirements in the workplace, which is currently set at 50 lux, in order to promote workers health. ‘Regulatory bodies should take these findings into account for the wellbeing and productivity of today’s workforce,’ says Philips’ principal scientist, Dr van der Zande. ‘People spend 80-90 per cent of their time indoors, so the indoor environment determines, to a large extent, the comfort and wellbeing of the employee, influencing their performance. It is important that human-centric lighting becomes a part of the regulatory standards, allowing architects and building designers to advise for the best solutions for all building environments.’ However, Graham White, technical manager at Eaton feels the current standard is right for most modern workplaces. ‘The 22 • J U N E 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk
current lux levels set by the EU are fine for the vast majority of office environments, in my opinion.’ He continued: ‘What we’re actually seeing is a subtle move towards lower lighting levels, driven in part by the increase in screen-based working. If offices were still predominantly dealing with paperwork, there could be a case for increasing the lux levels, but as things stand, I believe the current levels remain valid. ‘In terms of our ageing population, there is some interesting research that demonstrates the benefits of higher lux levels for those who are elderly, or unwell and residing in public health facilities, but that’s a niche area of interest, and offices are quite different environments. ‘The quality of light, rather than the quantity or amount of light, should be the primary concern.’ So how can we ensure that every worker has the right amount, and quality of light to perform? Phil Shadbolt, MD of Zeta Specialist Lighting said: ‘LEDs are providing a vast array of design-led options to light workspaces. Efficient, effective office lighting is a must in busy working environments.
Traditionally, lighting solutions such as fluorescent or incandescent light bulbs have fitted the bill – they provide excellent lighting, are easy to install, and are competitively priced. However the downside is that these energy-hungry solutions cost more to run and have a relatively short life, resulting in an on-going requirement to commit both time and money to replace and maintain fittings. LEDs are smaller, use less power, last longer, and are more robust. They can offer 360° lighting, and a tuneable colour temperature.’ White also sees the benefits of LED lighting, but feels there’s still a place for fluorescent fittings. ‘A major trend in office lighting has been the move away from the optical control of louvred lighting towards softer and more diffused solutions. This has been driven in part by the recent acceleration of LED lighting, which makes it easier to achieve that kind of arrangement,’ he said. ‘Additionally, the EN12464-1 lighting standard for the light and lighting of workplaces calls for improved levels of cylindrical illumination as a means of improving the quality of light in a working environment. ‘Thirdly, advances in the performance of computer screens makes the brightness of luminaires less of a problem, so you can prioritise better lighting of the overall environment.

‘When determining the best light source for an office, it’s difficult to overlook LED technology, which has gained so much attention recently. LED has become appealing for most applications and will continue to develop, but it is not necessarily preferable in every case, and fluorescent luminaires are still viable in many applications. ‘Before committing to one or the other, I’d urge specifiers to consider the total lifetime costs of the luminaire, including the expected outlay associated with maintenance and replacements,’ advised White. And the future? According to Graham White: ‘One of the emerging technologies we are beginning to see is OLED. It is currently an expensive option, and predominantly used in decorative applications, but the development of OLED will undoubtedly continue, and it’s entirely possible that it could become a viable option for general lighting purposes within the next decade. ‘Lighting control is another fast-growing topic. The appetite for individual control must be balanced against awareness of the space as a whole. The preferences of one worker can differ from another sitting nearby, so allowing individuals to have control of their lighting could actually have a negative impact, in terms of the greater good. ‘Ideally, control should be incorporated into a properly commissioned scheme for the entire working environment and comfort for all staff. In this way, localised adjustments can be initiated centrally, depending on factors such as occupancy, type of activity, level of daylight and personal preference.’
The way ahead Definitely designed for impact, One Pancras Square is part of London’s King’s Cross development, and accommodates offices over eight floors, including the new head office for French Fashion designer, Louis Vuitton. The Grade A office building, which has been rated BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ and features the latest technology to minimise environmental impact, has been fitted throughout with 900 Airlux chilled beam luminaires from Luxonic. The satin-lensed luminaires have been specifically developed for seamless integration into chilled beam structures, but importantly, provide controllable light outputs that achieve the optimum lit environment for staff. An older building that’s received a full refurbishment, including a lighting upgrade, is the Barcode Warehouse office in Newark - and predictably, the new design is LED-based. According to Stuart Dixon, sales manager at Easilume: ‘LED produces a brighter and more natural looking light. It is easier on the eyes, and gives the office a modern feel more suitable for working.’ The Barcode offices now incorporate an open plan office area, individual offices, open plan social areas, meeting rooms, and a boardroom - all lit using EasiLume’s LED lighting. Dixon continued: ‘When you are investing heavily in refurbishing your office space, it is important to get the most out of it. LED lighting reduces bills, looks modern and boosts the productivity of employees.’ In a similar refurbishment project, MHA
Lighting’s LED fittings were specified for IC Resources’ offices in Reading. Company director, Daniel Nash commented: ‘As a company operating within the technical arena, we’ve been keeping upto-date with the developments being made in LED lighting, and the associated benefits. ‘The IC Resources team is hugely dedicated, and works at an extremely fast pace, so it is paramount that the environment they work in is as comfortable and well lit as possible. Reducing our energy usage and associated carbon footprint is something we were also extremely focused on doing. ‘After speaking with lighting consultant, Litenow, it became even more apparent that switching to LED is an investment that can really pay off.’ IC Resources is set to benefit from lower energy bills, but crucially, its staff should already be noticing the less well-publicised benefits. As MHA’s Tom Harrison explained: ‘We are delighted with the savings we have been able to achieve, but the benefits of this installation are much more than just the energy saved. ‘The latest in human-centric lighting research suggests that high quality LED lighting improves the working environment, and as our LED lighting does not flicker or hum, it meets occupational health standards and contributes to a greater feeling of wellbeing amongst staff. ‘The LED technology provides the highest quality uniformly distributed light to create the closest light to natural daylight indoors, and the high lux levels we provide can improve employee’s concentration.’

Only the best It stands to reason that the spanking new offices of DIAL – the centre of excellence on lighting and electrical engineering - would be lit to perfection, so both staff and visitors should be able to function at 100 per cent with the chosen lighting scheme. DIAL owes its status of one of Germany’s top lighting specialists to its training schemes, product reviews, and the successful DIALux planning software and online lighting search engine, LUMsearch. This placed the company under particular pressure when it came to designing the lighting for its own building. Being under close scrutiny within the lighting industry, DIAL needed to put its knowledge into practise. DIAL required office lighting with independent control systems that were efficient, economical, and stylish. However, with major lighting companies as partners, it was difficult to select a luminaire without disappointing a manufacturer. For an unbiased selection, DIAL carried out a series of ‘blind’ investigations on 37 invited manufacturers’ products, which involved a total of ten LED spotlights, five optics, and reflector spotlights. The products were scrutinised on a variety of factors, including mechanics, product quality, and design.
24 • J U N E 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk
Concord’s Stadium range was chosen, and more than 500 of the luminaires have now been installed throughout the DIAL building. Interestingly, different versions of the Stadium spotlights have been specified, with varying (10°, 25° and 55°) beam angles, tailoring to the needs of each employee and their office space. The building is the perfect example of collaboration between elegant interior design and a clever lighting solution that actually works for the staff. The spacious foyer is now flooded with light, complementing the large glass frontage and glass roof. ‘When designing our new building, the lighting was of very high importance,’ explained Jürgen Spitz, interior designer and team leader at DIAL. ‘As lighting specialists ourselves, we needed the most reliable and high quality product on the market. ‘Not only did we need comfortable and high quality brightness, we also wanted to consider health factors for our employees and visitors. We wanted as much natural light as possible, which is why we opted for a glass roof and courtyard. Therefore, the artificial light needed to complement and adjust automatically to the natural rhythms of light in each room.’

Bring in the experts Following a series of extremely successful, high profile installations, Hoare Lea Lighting has created a full lighting solution tailored to the exacting space of Manchester’s prestige office address, 55 Princess Street. To enhance the arrival experience, the double-height entrance reception has been given a significant overhaul. David LinvilleBoud, executive lighting designer at Hoare Lea Lighting commented: ‘Linear LED lines of light, supplied by NJO, now run from

outside, through the front glazing and along the length of the reception. Incorporated into the architectural detail to give a high-quality finish, these draw the eye to the reception, announcing that the building is open for business.’ To give it prominence, the new desk is fitted with integral kick-zone lighting, by Osram. Three ‘Box’ pendants by Schmitz, suspended above the desk, provide illumination to the worktop, while
adding brightness and drama to the reception space. An acoustic treatment to the underside of the first floor walkway provided an opportunity to integrate highefficiency Etap LED downlights with integral emergency lighting. These raise the ambient internal illumination, while maintaining a clean appearance. The existing cove detail was cleaned and re-lamped to provide a wash to the internal reception wall, and a lit element within the

glazed section of the upper walkway now adds vertical illuminance to the ground floor and a lit feature to the first floor walkway. The reception waiting area was remodelled to include a bookcase designed to incorporate lighting on the shelves. This adds warmth, giving the space a relaxed feel. Along the soffit on the upper level of the reception, linear fluorescent luminaires by Fagerhult are aligned to provide ambient illumination and a bright, visible light source. This installation continues along the length of the reception and out onto the external canopy, complementing the lines of light, and visually linking external and internal spaces. Tungsten halogen lighting within the lift

and toilet lobbies has been replaced by LED downlights from Luxonic, to give continuity to the spaces. The office floor plates had suffered from high contrast ratios between the glazed sections and solid sections of wall. This created the appearance of a dark space, even though the task lighting was considered sufficient. Linville-Boud explained: ‘To balance this contrast, and raise the visual impression, linear fluorescent wall washing by Luxonic was added to the solid perimeter panels; this reduces the contrast between the panels and the glazing. Careful detailing has allowed the
luminaires to be concealed, creating a glow down the panels without the distraction of visible light fittings.’ A light well at the rear of the building separates the listed façade from the internal office space. This created a high contrast ratio between the lit floor plates and the light well. High performance floodlights from acdc were incorporated into the well – these are mounted on the office façade, in order to preserve the listed façade. The floodlights project up the light well, illuminating the complex space and eliminating the contrast problem. With all that attention to detail, who wouldn’t feel better and work better?

Hoare Lea Lighting won the Daylight Project of the Year award for the project, and, together with studioFRACTAL, also won Public Building Project of the Year at the Lighting Design Awards. The lighting brief for the project required extensive use of natural and artificial light to enhance the passenger experience and achieve ambitious sustainability targets. The terminal is characterised by a bold, undulating roof emphasising the passenger journey, with height and roof-light size increased over check-in, security, and departures. North facing roof lights capture daylight, while blocking direct sunlight. Daylight and thermal simulations helped modify the design to maximise comfort (DF 2%), and prevent excessive solar gain. roof soffit, permitting daylight to filter through the leading edge of each roof profile, and housing continuous RGB LED lighting to backlight the ceiling with subtle daylight colours. A cohesive strategy was developed that linked the terminal to the covered court and car park. Lighting was integrated to create a clutter-free installation, where space and light are evident in all areas – even those without daylight. Subtle variations in ambient and task lighting complement the roof undulations, while wall washing and localised, coloured lighting at critical points support way finding. Within the covered court, the sinuous forms of the Slipstream sculpture are accentuated, creating an arresting spectacle – while functional lighting is integrated at low level. The total connected load for lighting across the development is an impressive 7.7W/sqm – however this is never fully utilised. Daylight allows automatic control systems to reduce artificial lighting – the daytime lighting load is 4.7 W/sqm. At night, when the illuminated roof feature is on, the load is 7.0W/sqm. Using daylight, LED, intelligent controls, and energy generation technology, Terminal 2 will produce 40 per cent less emissions than the buildings it replaces, and is the UK’s first to achieve BREEAM Excellent.

One thing that designers and installers must consider however, is the higher inrush current of LED devices compared to incandescent lighting. Flex Connectors have catered for this, by adding a special relay to all our lighting controls. The high inrush relay (up to 120A) incorporates ‘premake’ contacts, which quite simply absorb the substantial inrush current. This means the main contacts only need to handle the quiescent load current, and as a result the lifetime of the relay is increased dramatically.

OPINION
Customers using dimmable LED lamps with traditional dimmers often experience flicker, shimmering, or strobing effects’
Compatible choices Having spent forty years manufacturing dimmer switches in the UK, Varilight chairman, Dr Tony Doyle is in the prime position to outline the most recent innovations that are making linear LED dimming possible
E
veryone now understands the myriad benefits of LED lighting; offering significant energy saving, cool running, and long life. However, the challenge has been to replicate the dimming functionality of incandescent lighting, and enable LED mood lighting alongside those energy saving benefits. Indeed, until advances in dimming technology became more widely available, the specification or selection of an LED lighting and dimming combination, often struck fear into an installer’s heart. But architects, designers, consultants, and contractors no longer need to be worried about specifying dimming with LED lamps. A similar smooth, linear, and flicker-free effect to dimming traditional light sources, such as incandescent and halogen lamps, can now be achieved.
The solution for professionals With the rapidly growing uptake in LED lighting from designers, and increasingly householders, the need for a reliable dimming solution for retrofit LED lamps has become paramount. Traditional dimmer switches are C O N TA C T
unsuitable for LED lighting for a number of reasons. Not only are the minimum loads typically as high as 40W, but the range of brightness that they offer, when used with non-linear LED lamps, produced a poor dimming performance. Customers using dimmable LED lamps with traditional dimmers often experience flicker, shimmering, or strobing effects, and a poor dimming range, particularly at the lower end. Manufacturers have now recognised the need for a simplified proposition and, as a result, have developed new dimmers capable of controlling both traditional lighting and the new generation of dimmable, energy saving, LED lighting.
Is it dimmable? It is worth noting that even the most advanced dimmer will not be able to perform at its best if the lighting load itself is not dimmable, and a significant problem for customers wanting to dim energy saving lighting is that the majority of LEDs on offer cannot be dimmed at all. An end user who is replacing incandescent or halogen lamps with dimmable LEDs will be used to a range
and quality of control that may not be replicated when their existing dimmer is presented with the new energy saving load. Selecting truly dimmable lighting is therefore as important as choosing the correct dimmer.
Guaranteed compatibility It is clear that the role of the dimmer switch manufacturer has changed significantly. It is no longer sufficient to supply reliable, high performance dimmers to the market, without considering compatibility with the wide range of different dimmable lighting options on the market. This is one of the main reasons why we continue to work with manufacturers as they develop new lamps. Looking to the future, it is clear that demanding loads, such as dimmable LEDs, are set to become increasingly popular as replacements for conventional lighting, and therefore it is important that installers choose a dimmer, which can be tailored to the characteristics of the load. More importantly this technology will allow them to future-proof any installation, ensuring that it meets demand now, as well as in many years to come.

Shadow land Touring performers who try to remain in the dark
This not only saves time, but is also easier on the nerves!’
I
mpressive acrobatic performances and the play of light and shadow are the key ingredients for the tour of Shadowland – a performance piece from the Connecticutbased dance company, Piobolus. Using their bodies, the performers create a host of shadow silhouettes, including those of elephants, faces, buildings, and cars. Assisting with the shadow play are several ETC Source Four incandescent fixtures, as well as Gio and Ion lighting control systems. When it reached Germany, the spectacular show became famous through appearances on popular television shows, such as the long-running German language show, Wetten, dass...?, causing sell out performances across the country ever since. Shadowland production manager, Jorge Delgadillo and his team have trusted ETC equipment for a long time. For four years, they have been touring the world with their own Gio console. Shadowland operator, Kyle Gavell said: ‘The Gio is the best console ETC makes for touring. All I need to do is to connect my switch! It is so compact that I can carry the console to the stage by myself in order to do my settings.’ He is also convinced
of the console’s handling, as he explained: ‘I can intuitively implement everything I want to do.’ Among its many capabilities, it is the Gio’s networking abilities that play an especially big role, according to the show’s technical staff. Delgadillo said: ‘The networking capabilities of ETC products are really great. We have one Net3 DMX/RDM Four-Port Gateway and two DMX/RDM Two-Port Gateways with us. With them, we can simply add sACN universes over DMX, and thereby adapt to the local venue conditions.’ Due to a tight tour schedule and changing venues, the set-up and focusing of the fixtures also needs to be fast and easy, which is why Delgadillo and Gavell swear by the iRFR app. ‘When we walk into a new theatre, the only thing we need to do is to plug our desk into the network,’ explained Delgadillo, ‘and with WiFi, we can instantly use the remote control, for example to turn on and reset the moving lights. Thanks to the Gio’s different macros, we can do everything with the remote control.’ As Shadowland operator, Kyle Gavell explained, this offers many practical www.tlmagazine.co.uk • J U N E 2 0 1 5 • 39

advantages: ‘With the iRFR, I can do the focusing on my own, and don’t have to give instructions from the ground to someone who doesn’t speak my language, and maybe has never focused a fixture before. This not only saves time, but is also easier on the nerves!’ During the show’s stay in Munich, another advantage of ETC’s consoles became apparent when it was found that the local venue, the Prinzregententheater, owns an Eos Ti, which meant the Shadowland team could transfer the

show files from their desk directly to the theatre’s own lighting desk. Gavell said: ‘That saved space in the control room. In the past, we used to place our own desk on the side. But since the consoles belong to the same family, we could simple add our show file to their Eos Ti.’ For the current German tour, Shadowland rented in excess of 100 conventional Source Four luminaires, which Delgadillo said have proven themselves to him over the years. ‘Source Four lights are very important and helpful
www.etcconnect.com www.shadowlandlive.com

Wherever in the world we are, we always request Source Four because we know exactly what kind of light we will get.’ The Source Four fixtures help the Shadowland team create the dark shadows with sharp edges necessary for the show, but without projecting light onto the show’s reflective screen. ‘With other equipment, and in other parts of the world, we always had difficulties to get these sharp edges,’ explained Delgadillo.

special exhibition based on the use of light in art has been running at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, giving Dutch citizens the chance to have their self portraits displayed. The exhibition, entitled Night Exposition, consists entirely of portraits created with light, as a tribute to Rembrandt – whose work has been on display in the Philips wing of the museum. Visitors to the exposition can personally experience the impact of innovative LED lighting on the masterpieces
of Rembrandt. The exhibition has been designed to demonstrate the unlimited possibilities of LED, as well as Philips’ engagement with the
cultural heritage of the Netherlands. Rembrandt was known as a master of light, who went one step further than his contemporaries. He succeeded in capturing this magical light in paint, giving his masterpieces unprecedented depth, intimacy, and powers of expression. The modern possibilities of LED are shown clearly in the immense portraits in Night Exposition, composed by light artist, Eelco van den Berg. ‘I enjoy juxtaposing bright colours with dark, earthy shades,’ he explains. ‘As in Rembrandt’s paintings, the contrast between light and shade plays an important role in my work, lending intensity to the artwork,’

Ham Yard Soho’s latest hot ticket - Ham Yard Hotel – is the flagship of high-end hoteliers’, Tim and Kit Kemp’s Firmdale Group. Designed by international architect, Woods Bagot, Ham Yard Hotel is Firmdale’s second new-build property in the UK. Featuring 91 guest rooms and suites, 24 luxury apartments, 13 retail units, a restaurant, fabulous roof terrace, three bars, a gym and a 176-seat theatre/cinema, the hotel even has an original 1950s bowling alley imported from Texas! The BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated hotel was specified with extensive lighting control throughout. LJJ installed and programmed the lighting with a Philips Dynalite control system in the front of house and external areas, for feature lighting and pre-set scenes. Hyndburn Leisure Following National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Improvement Fund, Hyndburn Borough Council identified a number of ways to enhance its leisure centre facilities, including improving the quality of lighting. After researching various options, the Council decided on MHA Lighting’s LED technology, which it felt offered high quality light uniformity and colour rendering for the busy facility, as well as being extremely low glare. The team at MHA designed a bespoke solution for the sports hall, installing 40 LightStar 205 LED luminaires into the pre-
existing high bay infrastructure. In doing so, overall lighting energy consumption was reduced by 64 per cent. At the same time, lux levels in the area were improved, providing 500 lux at floor level. A further 21 LED luminaires we installed in the adjoining swimming pool area. MHA Lighting MD, Tom Harrison commented: ‘Good lighting is paramount in sports and leisure facilities, and our technology provides an extremely low glare rating.’ Cllr Ken Moss at Hyndburn Council, said that switching to LED lighting was part of the Council’s environmental strategy to improve light levels for the leisure centre’s members.
MHA Lighting www.mhalighting.co.uk
He added: ‘The leisure centre is used by the community for a huge variety of physical activities; from school swimming classes and gymnastics to over 50’s badminton and five-a-side football. The Council is always keen to support local businesses, and instructed MHA lighting to design an LED fitting which would improve light levels for Hyndburn’s members with minimal glare for their sporting activities. ‘The new lighting has been a great success. The scheme has hit a number of targets, and members have commented on how it has enhanced the centre’s environment.’
Namaste Lounge Owners of the Namaste Lounge restaurant commissioned Asco Lights to design and implement an innovative lighting scheme as part of its refurbishment and renovation programme. Asco helped transform the restaurant, bar, dance floor, and private dining area with a scheme that was functional as well as spectacular. It was essential the lighting solution worked to perfectly complement Namaste’s changing requirements - from a casual daytime ambience to after dark events and parties. The functional lighting element used recessed baffle square black downlights with a gold internal reflector to reduce glare, while creating a feeling of warmth and opulence. Ceilings were painted dark charcoal, enabling the downlights to blend perfectly. The light source is LED, running at 2500k, creating the warm, cosy ambience typically associated with halogen. architectural features, and a black glass facia with an anti-glare lens creates a subtle effect with an eight-degree beam. A black and gold theme dominates; black mini pendants with gold inserts, and 63-degree beams were used over the bar for maximum visual impact. Several RGB products enable the restaurant’s atmosphere to be changed instantly. This not only separates specific areas, but also enables the use of direct and indirect lighting profiles. A balance of decorative items, complemented with seamless integrated architectural lighting, creating ambience and mood, culminated in an outstanding finish. Asco pre-empted challenges by exploring ideal solutions, including a perplexing linear theme with profiles running up the wall and across the ceiling, requiring a suitable direct light outcome. The team used a specialist aluminium channel with a soft diffuser to create an immense lighting effect, eliminating the problematic ‘dotting’ of LED tape.

The Jane Antwerp’s latest restaurant, The Jane, is the brainchild of chef, Sergio Herman and Nick Bril. With architect, Piet Boon intent on investing in the artisanal feel of the historic chapel housing it, .PSLAB was brought in to provide suitable lighting. The team sculpted bespoke lighting to compliment the existing space. On entering the space, guests are greeted with a series of white corrugated cylinders. The lit brass interiors give a rich deep yellow glow. Moving into the ground floor dining area, the use of brass continues in a set of table lamps that rise above the level of the seating, adding definition to the spatial layout. At this point, the focal point of the space also starts to appear: a 12x9m chandelier suspended above the dining area.
Weighing 800 kilograms and suspended from one point in the ceiling, the chandelier dips to 2.75m above the ground, communicating a very human scale, and then disperses back up to fill the vaulted space above the dining area with tubular tentacles each ending with a glass bulb. Above the bar on the upper level, a set of projector lights are mounted on steel beams installed across the width of the chapel. The sharp, black finish of this setup adds a layer contrasting with the rough material of the chapel interior, without conflicting visually with the focal chandelier. Similarly, not all the lighting installations were made to pop out; projectors laid out to accentuate specific instances in the original form of the interior and its newly acquired function are hidden beside massive columns.

The Sanderson Morgans Hotel Group has unveiled a series of newly designed guestrooms for the iconic Sanderson Hotel, created by Tim Andreas of Banjo Ad Inc. The landmark 1950s building, initially transformed by Philippe Starck, featured smart, pared-down luxury tempered with a splash of wit and irony. Sanderson’s redesigned guestrooms pay homage to the original ethos by marrying concepts of baroque and minimalist, extravagance and luxury, while enhancing the guest experience by exuding residential comfort and functionality. Chelsom was commissioned to provide

state-of-the-art custom lighting for the project. The company created an entirely bespoke lighting scheme for the 150 guestrooms. The brief stipulated that the lighting products must work seamlessly with all elements of the guestroom design, so Chelsom collaborated with the case goods manufacturer to incorporate multi-functional bedside reading lights into the glass topped nightstands, to create a beautifully designed standalone piece. finish, the fittings feature circular multidirectional LED heads, with integral switches and adjustable arms to give directional and ambient light to the bedside. Bespoke pendants were also created to supplement the guestroom and bathroom lighting, featuring heavy clear crystal globes with deep spiral hand cutting, and lit with eco-friendly halogen lamps; the bright sparkle accentuates the deep cutting while adding a touch of old school glamour to the chic and contemporary interior concept.

Redevco recently carried out the restoration of this architectural gem, and to celebrate the completion of the project, the façade was used for an astonishing light and music show. CST Production was commissioned to lead the lighting design and production supply. Lighting designer and owner of CST Production, Christian Stenuit, explained: ‘The aim was to create a strong visual signal – to magnify the building, to enhance the building’s architecture in general, and to reinforce the visibility and beauty of the architectural and decorative features.’ Inno’s façade is 23m high and 100m wide, with three roof domes from 25m up to 47m. To ensure a lighting installation that was invisible to the outdoor spectator’s perspective, the lighting designer selected LED products from SGM. According to Stenuit, the luminaires ticked all the boxes: effective and reliable, resistant to extreme weather conditions, advanced low-power, and high-performance devices, impressive output and high-quality colour mixing, good ergonomic character, and wireless integrated fixtures. A total of 20 G-Spot moving heads, 108 P-5 wash lights, eight Q-7s, and 22 Q-2 flood/blind/strobe lights were deployed for the display. ‘We have been experiencing extreme weather conditions during the whole production process, so the IP65 rating of the SGM fixtures has been crucial for the light show,’ said Stenuit. Sixteen G-Spots were suspended on vertical truss, attached to the public lighting poles projecting onto the façade, utilising seven different customised gobos, while another four units enhanced the highest architectural features from the rooftop. Spread across the four floors of the building, 84 P-5s, of both 15˚ and 43˚ beam angles, illuminated the façade; 24 of the same unit accomplished the task from the three roof domes; six Q-7 lit specific areas calling for a large aperture angle on the third floor; two of the same units lit the interior of the main dome; and finally 22 of the smaller Q-2 illuminated the several small architectural elements. ‘The Q-2 is a powerful and versatile tool with top-of-class ergonomics,’ explained Stenuit. Adding the G-Spot to his design was, for Stenuit, an obvious choice. ‘It is the only IP65 spot luminaire on the market,’ he added.
We have been experiencing extreme weather conditions during the whole production process, so the IP65 rating of the SGM fixtures has been crucial for the light show’

GE Lighting Data for discounts: new report shows consumers are willing to share information A major piece of research by GE Lighting has revealed that consumers are far more willing to share private data with retailers, such as their mobile phone location, than previously imagined – and indeed that there is a real desire for the kind of in-store connected services this information could support. This type of system works by using technology such as Bluetooth beacons, cameras or Visible Light Communication (VLC) to communicate with customers’ phones. Normally integrated into existing infrastructure, such as the lighting fittings, IPS enables retailers to pinpoint the customer’s location within one or two metres accuracy. James Fleet, Head of Retail Specification at GE Lighting commented: “The results are interesting because they contradict pre-conceived ideas about the willingness of consumers to share their information with retailers. Increasingly, we’re seeing that customers are quite happy to engage with brands in this way, as long as they receive something in return.

Wikipedia definition of crowdfunding: Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.
I have a dream Could crowdfunding be the future for pushing the boundaries of LED technology, asks whichledlight.com?
I
n practice the crowdfunding movement has allowed entrepreneurs to connect directly with a target group of early adopters, to pitch for funding. Whilst initially appearing niche, platforms like Kickerstarter, Indiegogo, and Crowdcube have quickly grown to be a thriving industry worth more than $5.1 billion worldwide. At the heart of this movement is a community of entrepreneurs pitching ideas at the leading edge of technology. Firstly, it is important to give a brief description of how crowd funding works: there are generally two types of crowd funding; equity, where the
backers receive a small portion of the company, or rewards, where backers generally receive an early version of the product, a product with extra features, or some benefit separate to equity. We have observed several crowdfunding campaigns making use of the falling cost and rising prominence of LED technology, revealing some interesting lessons to the wider lighting industry. So what has been funded so far? Starting with a whacky sounding product - Zackees are cycling gloves with inbuilt signals for turning. Stick your hand out and the light indicates to fellow road users the way you intend to turn. How did they fare online? Not bad; with a goal of $35k, it actually raised double the amount, providing a healthy $72,000 to further develop the product. The Sunn Light ‘creates vibrant spaces and healthy living by continuously changing colour, and brightness in rhythm with the sun’. To get an idea of how this product
would work, simpy download f.lux for your computer screen; it adjusts the amount of blue light given off in line with the amount of daylight in a space. Why would someone want to do this? Well, research is starting to indicate too much blue light, especially late in the evening, can disrupt our brain chemistry by modulating neurochemical and hormonal release. The important question for entrepreneurs is does any one care? Well, looking at the kickstarter campaign, Sunn had 459 backers, and received $117, 106 – more than double the original goal of $50,000. So yes, it looks like people do care enough about blue light and health. SnapRays Guidelight pitched a plug-and-play retrofit replacement for standard plug in nightlights. It installs in seconds and doesn’t require wiring or batteries. A sensor automatically turns on LEDs to provide soft nighttime illumination, while the power outlet remains in use at all times. SnapRays had modest ambitions to raise $12,000 to get the ball rolling; when the campaign finished, it had

raised a staggering 40 times more, at $480k! The founders of LiFX claim to have brainstormed the idea over a beer. A WiFi-enabled light bulb with a smartphone app controller aimed for $100,000; less than 24 hours later, they had more than $270k. The campaign actually closed with $1.3million in crowd funding. We spoke to the founder of Rayger, currently running a kickstarter campaign. Rayger wanted to find a way to bring a new angle to student parties, and decided pairing strip LED lights to music, based on amplitude not volume, was the way to go. After nine days, Rayger surpassed its goal of $10,000, and with 124 backers at the time we spoke to them, the team had more than $15,000 with 17 days left. The company spokesman felt the obvious downside - of losing a small amount of capital to use the platform - is greatly outweighed by the advantages. So what did he see as the advantages? ‘It allows you to test the market for a low risk prototype, develop a basic brand, and

The lighting industry can benefit from taking small entrepreneurs with big dreams seriously, because customers certainly are’ find the popular options and features customers are willing to pay for’. In short, crowd funding is helping entrepreneurs put their ideas in front of a live audience, and make a fast go or no-go decision, de-risking the product development process. For bigger manufacturers, which don’t see how they can use crowd funding directly, what lessons can be learned? Firstly, all of the featured campaigns had a problem solving mentality. They didn’t set out to sell more light bulbs; they had a problem, which could be solved using LED light.
Secondly, these campaigns are worth keeping a close eye on to see how engaged consumers are with certain areas of the market. Clearly, based on the above, health, music, and home automation are key markets where LED lighting can, and does, have varied use cases. (As an aside, we have seen plenty of LED-inspired projects that we couldn’t fit in here particularly within the cycling space). Finally, another key point is to learn about consumer expectations and behaviour. SnapRays Guidelight demonstrates simplicity in retrofit is something consumers will expect from products moving forward. Connectivity is another obvious expectation, again confirmed by the speed and size of LiFX funding. We are always keeping an eye on the latest LED-inspired kickstarter campaigns, and we continue to see lighting-inspired innovation coming from industry outsiders. The lighting industry can benefit from taking small entrepreneurs with big dreams seriously, because customers certainly are - and the numbers don’t lie.

ach Thursday evening during the ski season, Airstar showcased various lighting technologies to illuminate the French ski resort of Val d’Isère. Airstar Night Light proves to be a great point of differentiation for Val d’Isère. David Hemelsdael, events and entertainment manager at the Val d’Isère Tourism Office, explained: ‘We were looking for a unique identity in order to stand out as a resort, and so sought an innovative lighting solution that would have a wow effect while being easy to deploy.’ In less than 10 minutes, the Tourism Office technical team can stop traffic on the main road, cover it entirely with snow, and set up the entertainment activities as well as the lighting balloons with the help of an Airstar team. The centre of the village then becomes the stage for a lighting show like no other. Various animations entertain the public: ice sculpting, DJ sets, live performances,

percussionists; all these animations create a magical and festive ambiance for all ages. The Airstar Night Light also allows the lighting manufacturer to test and validate new lighting solutions, such as the new ‘mobile’, made of three ‘Ball and Rock’ devices attached beneath Diamond and Star balloons, as well as the purpose-built 160cm wide crystal cover on a pole. ‘We are simply delighted with the results,’ enthused Hemelsdael. ‘As far as I know, Airstar is the only company capable of offering cost effective solutions that are capable of lighting up a street so quickly. No wonder they are the undisputed leader in their field!’ Looking ahead, he said: ‘Our main challenge is to reinvent ourselves each year: last year we had a marine theme, with jellyfish and fish-shaped balloons; this year we chose a galactic theme, and we are already working closely with Airstar on a new concept for 2016!’

MINUTES WITH
Sam Woodward What is your favourite light source, and why? LED is the exciting future for lighting, enabling new form-factors of fixture, along with increasing efficiency. Also, despite some early compatibility challenges, all LED systems are highly controllable – for dimming, for colour changing, and for use in a very wide range of applications. Building facades lit with colour – for or against – and why? For – but used tastefully. If you’ve seen the skyline in Shanghai or Hong Kong, you can’t fail to be impressed by the show presented by the cityscape, giving the architecture an extra nocturnal dimension.
Sam Woodward, Lutron’s customer education leader for Europe and Africa, lights up this month’s coffee break with his personal reflections
Who is your favourite designer of anything that’s not lighting? The new opera house at Glyndebourne, which opened in 1994, is a stunning piece of architecture, internally and externally (designed by Michael Hopkins & Partners). I sung in the old house in 1990, and so had a personal connection to the old building. The replacement is perfect for the growing requirements of this British arts icon. Which lighting project would you like to have worked on? Any of the Olympic ceremonies - for the variety, the excitement of the live show, and the world stage for the very pinnacle of the craft. After the huge changes LED has brought to the industry, what do you think will be the next big advance?
C O N TA C T
Lutron www.lutron.com
We are experiencing dramatic innovation in the areas of networking and communication for controls, along with a renaissance in simple-to-operate user interfaces. I think it’s therefore the way in which people interact with lighting, which will be the next big advance.
Do you see a time when all lighting is sustainable? If so, how can we achieve it? This is an imperative, rather than a wish! It will be achieved by the combination of more efficient light sources, more efficient driver electronics, and deployment of automated controls. All three techniques combined, are necessary in order to achieve sustainability. What trends do you forecast in domestic lighting? The use of many smaller light sources to light each space in our homes, rather than one big source per room, combined with networked control, such that lighting can be used to indicate other events (e.g. lights blinking when the doorbell rings, and similar applications). Why do you think lighting is bucking the general trend and showing such strong growth? Lighting is an essential service – we all need illumination to see what we’re doing, to work and to set the right mood to relax. The growth in the lighting market is partly down to strong continued R&D that maximises the potential of new technologies, such as networked controls and LED systems. Chandelier or candle? Candle. It’s the combination of romance and pyrotechnics! Is there one declining light source that you’ll miss above all others? If so, which is it, and why? Personally I love cold cathode as a light source - it’s perfectly dimmable, right down to very low levels, and a great source for both white and colour.
It’s the combination of romance and pyrotechnics!’ www.tlmagazine.co.uk • J U N E 2 0 1 5 • 73

Easilume 0333 800 5555 | www.EasiLume.com EasiLume’s LED Envie Panels deliver quality lighting in internal environments EasiLume’s Envie Panels are an ideal replacement for fluorescent panels and recessed lighting. They provide an even distribution of quality light making them perfect for schools, offices, universities and hospitals. “The value of good quality lighting is constantly underestimated,” says Stuart Dixon, EasiLume Head of Sales. “Flickering fluorescent lighting is blamed for headaches, migraines, stress, lethargy, irritability, eyestrain and poor concentration - it’s amazing anyone still puts up with it. LEDs produce a quality of light much closer to natural light, which makes the environment brighter, airier and more productive. “Personal and central control of lighting has become a big factor when designing and refurbishing workspaces, study areas and hospitals. It’s important employees, students and patients are comfortable, and lighting plays a huge part in that.” EasiLume’s dimmable LEDs can be paired with a wide range of control systems, including daylight-harvesting, so the LEDs automatically change and adjust with the natural light and the environment has a consistent level and intensity of light throughout the day.
