Brought to you by TL magazine, The Guide is the essential, pocket-sized guide to the latest lighting trends for professionals, featuring a raft of new products for the designer, architect and specifier, and highlighting their use in a series of inspirational case studies. Even the most tech savvy of us sometimes has need for a paper-based system, and while we recognise and applaud the advancements which allow products to be sourced and ordered online, The Guide will allow you to see the products in action, read up on their potential uses and, importantly, get industry feedback from those in the know. For ease of accessibility, The Guide has been broken down into accessible sections, which include: energy efficiency; emergency systems; retail display; control systems; and commercial applications. As well as the latest product offerings, we’ve sourced a variety of case studies that feature specialist lighting techniques, such as Diagonal 123, the Barcelona office block with a lighting control system that’s so advanced, it’s given the building owners a real edge when it comes to renting office space in an already overcrowded market. While perhaps not something the average designer would be involved in, for inspirational value alone, it’s worth having a look at Bruce Munroe’s stunning light installation (p75), which is taking place all summer at Longwood Gardens, one of the US’ premier event locations. Whether you’re specifying for a private residence, a corporate office headquarters or a museum, The Guide has got it covered. Enjoy! Gill Anderson, editor

ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING
A recent
report by the Climate Group, Lighting the Clean Revolution: The rise of LEDS and what it means for cities, contains some impressive figures, but they are not beyond the bounds of what we have heard before: lighting is responsible for 19 per cent of global energy use and six per cent of greenhouse gas emissions; saving 40 per cent of lighting energy globally would have a climate impact equivalent to eliminating half the emissions of all electricity and heat production in the EU. What the study does do, however, is help take the widespread adoption of LED technology from theory to practice and demonstrates that it is a viable, as well as a virtuous, alternative to traditional lighting that is ready and waiting to be deployed at scale. Furthermore, it rightly emphasises that the increase in demand and production brought about by such up-scaling will reward markets with improved technology and lower prices — making these benefits complementary, rather than mutually exclusive. Naturally, the report emphasises the potential energy savings up for grabs, but it also aims to counter the concerns over performance shortcomings, particularly product reliability, that were common among municipal lighting managers. Of 533 luminaires tested in the trial, only six have failed to date – that’s a failure rate of just one per cent - and lighting managers worldwide have since attested to their credentials, in terms of performance, reliability and efficiency. 16
STREETS AHEAD
A number of successful city trials have paved the way for the widespread adoption of LED street lighting. OCG’s Simon Leggett discusses viability and looks at the benefits of mass adoption by local authorities

If LEDs become an accepted part of public surroundings, individuals will be far more likely to welcome them into their homes
In addition to lowering cost, the adoption of LEDs in street lighting solutions will tackle another of the hurdles that the technology currently faces: differing levels of awareness and trust among the general public. If LEDs become an accepted part of public surroundings, individuals will be far more likely to welcome them into their homes and prefer them in their personal choices. The report conducted surveys in four cities that had trialled LEDs, which registered majorities ranging from 68 – 90 per cent in support of LED rollout across their cities and very few instances of negative response. The trials are helping to take LEDs from niche to mainstream by increasing recognition of their advantages, which go beyond savings of cost and carbon and incorporate social benefits, such as feelings of safety due to improved visibility at night. A CASE IN POINT
Our own experience has demonstrated how LEDs can help customers to achieve similar kinds of economic and social rewards. At the University of Bath, for instance, OCG’s LED solutions were able to create savings of 7.3 tonnes of CO2 per year, and vastly improve visibility, while ensuring that the university’s ‘dark skies’ claims were maintained by 100 per cent cut-off at a horizontal distance. Furthermore, we were able to reduce the frequency of maintenance work from every other year to a projected interval of 11 years. As another example, when the Open University wished to tackle the high energy consumption and maintenance costs of its campus street lights, while
maintaining visibility, OCG’s LED technology was able to improve light output while making impressive energy savings of 70 per cent. The question remains whether high profile trials such as these will be enough to persuade local authorities and procurement managers to make the switch. Unfortunately, the remarkable return-on-investment that LEDs offer over time is tempered by the current economic backdrop, which can make it difficult to commit up-front capital investment. This is an area in which government and agencies of public procurement can play an invaluable part, acting as a launch pad for the deployment of LED technology into other markets. It is more than likely that governments will need to step up to the plate and push the levers of policy, to provide assistance to cities facing capital constraints, and make the overall economics of LED projects more attractive to early adopters. We know the staggering rewards that can be gained through LED deployment; we know they can perform on a large scale; perhaps it’s time for governments to help us all see the light?

EMERGENCY LIGHTING
Running man
Is it time to change the way we think about emergency lighting systems for more user-friendly, eco-friendly, and people-friendly alternatives? Say the words
‘emergency lighting’ and without hesitation, our minds conjure the green running man pointing the way to the nearest exit. Trouble is, we’ve become so accustomed to it, the impact has long since gone, and I’m willing to bet that most of us don’t even register its presence in our day-to-day environment. However, that’s not to say they aren’t worth their weight in precious metals in the event of an emergency. If you’ve ever been in a 12th floor office that suddenly fills with thick black, disorientating smoke, that calm green glow pointing the way out is quite literally, a lifesaver. Alan Daniels, business development director at P4 looks
at the changing face of the systems: ‘Emergency lighting has undergone many interesting changes over the past few years to provide products that are more reliable, energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing. The essential requirement however remains unchanged – to have in place a system that will provide at all times the safest means of evacuation in the event of an incident that causes the failure of the mains lighting circuit. A noteworthy feature has been the pace of innovation, supported by the increasing application of LEDs and the search for more cost effective and sustainable solutions.’

‘Testing plays a crucial role in any emergency lighting installation’
Above: ELP’s Maxim fitting and below right: the company’s LDCO components
TESTING TIMES
Daniels discussed the testing process, saying: ‘Testing plays a crucial role in any emergency installation. ‘A regime of daily, monthly and annual testing is required, with accurate records kept. Maintained luminaires and exit signs must be checked daily, all emergency luminaires tested typically for less than 10 minutes every month and for their rated duration every year. Regimes comprise either manual or automatic testing. To carry out the tests manually requires reliable and experienced technicians or trained staff. In larger buildings this can be a very costly, labour intensive exercise. ‘Automatic test systems have become affordable and indispensable, and having a fully addressable emergency installation that also carries out regular luminaire testing can offer considerable cost benefits. For a scheme involving over two thousand luminaires this can amount to nearly six figures once the two-year payback
on investment has been reached. Certainly not to be sneezed at! ‘You should note that BSEN62034, which covers “automatic test systems for battery powered emergency escape lighting” is under review, and is expected to be re-published shortly. ‘Regardless of type, requirements of BS 5266-8 (BSEN50172) and BSEN 62034 must be met. Testing systems must be appropriate for the application and include records. They must be conducted at time of least risk, without disturbing other electrical services, and re-charging must be checked. ‘The possibility exists of failure of the normal lighting during a full duration test. Therefore tests should take place at times of low risk to allow the batteries to recharge. Otherwise suitable arrangements will need to be made. Indication and recording of the results should also be looked at carefully. BS 62034 stipulates that automatic test systems shall indicate results of all tests. Results of test must be reliably indicated. Indication of failure of a duration test shall not be cancelled by a functional test. Test failure result shall be retained for 7 days with mains supply failure & be indicated when the supply is resumed. ATS will repeat the test. Function indicators should comply with IEC.’ ON THE GROUND – OR ON THE WEB?
Interestingly, it seems most emergency lighting systems still rely on a man with a ladder and a clipboard, who’s responsibility it is to physically check fittings. While that’s OK in a small office, can T O TA L L I G H T I N G G U I D E •

you imagine the task in a large city hospital, or an estate of Government departments? Visions of painting the Forth Bridge come to mind! So I’m relieved to hear that Thomas and Betts has launched an online maintenance solution -Naveo - which allows the user the control the entire installation, including regular inspection and maintenance processes – remotely. And for multiple sites – no problem; they can all be run from one system. Naveo provides a digital overview via the Internet. Buildings are monitored 24-hours a day, and alerts are sent out to remind facilities managers of regular maintenance and inspection schedules. SAFE – OR SAFE AND GREEN?

systems, and if so, what are the real benefits? ELP has released three emergency LED luminaires. Axiom, Finesse and Fusion provide a choice of designs, offering similar performance to conventional 8W T5 fluorescent fittings, but with the benefits typical of LEDs. The bright white LEDs typically provide 100Lumens, with integral three-hour duration emergency gear. The drive technology, smaller batteries and reduced charge currents provide significant energy savings over 8W fluorescent equivalents. The company has also added fully inter-operable DALI versions to its collection. ELP’s engineers designed the LD-CO emergency LED control gear range to allow maintained operation of high power LED modules, such as Philips’ Fortimo DLM & SLM, Xicato range, Bridgelux’ ES range, Citizen’s CL-L233-C13N1, the GE Infusion and Osram’s Prevaled. The latest version offers full DALI control and reporting, plus automatic self-test if a DALI signal is not connected. LOOK UP – AND SHAPE UP
David Wright, MD of ELP and chairman of ICEL supports the introduction of a new sign format. Somewhat surprisingly (to me at least) comes the news that the current format isn’t standardised. Wright’s Clear Sign Campaign details the differences: ‘Text only signs are not legal and should have already been replaced; BS5499 Pictogram signs (with or without supplementary text) are legal, but should only have been used when expanding an installation already incorporating similar signs; pictogram-only signs with the same format as shown in H&S(Signs and Signals) Regulations/EC Safety Signs Directive (92/58/EEC) are legal but should not be mixed with other sign formats. From 2012, the

new ISO16069 pictogram signs will also be legal, but again should not be mixed. The latest proposals do not only identify the ISO16069 sign format, the references to ISO 3864-1 and ISO 38644 to provide detailed information relating to the safety colour and contrast colour.’ Wright continues: ‘The images show the different appearance of the pictogram symbols used in these signs, but the key differences between the H&S (Signs and Signals) Regulations / EC Safety Signs Directive (92/58/ EEC) pictograms and the ISO16069 versions include: ‘straight on’ is depicted by an arrow facing up in ISO16069 and in BS 5499, whereas the Safety Signs and Signals Regulations do not state which way the arrow should be used. ‘ISO16069 allows the use of supplementary information, such as diagonal arrows (for stairs up or down) and in certain instances the use of text for example to distinguish between a normal exit that may also be used for escape and an exit that is perhaps intended only for emergencies and may lead to an exit door that is fitted with a security alarm).’ A CASE IN POINT
The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple is one of the four historic Inns of Court near London’s Embankment. Derek Walker, M&E coordinator within the 41-building estate wanted a stateof-the-art emergency lighting system to equip the offices, banqueting halls, and surrounding areas with a safe, convenient self-test solution. P4 installed its FASTELink fully automatic self-testing, computeraddressable system and arranged the conversion of specific mains fittings to match the existing profile. The remaining buildings will also be equipped with P4 emergency luminaires as each is refurbished and updated. ‘Our estate is not the easiest of locations, given its heritage, layout, and the demanding schedules of the people 32
Looking for help? ICEL is a trade association and the foremost UK authority on emergency lighting, and its members are manufacturers of components and products for emergency lighting fittings. ICEL’s representatives serve on BSI and International Standards committees, developing harmonised product and application standards. Its members are well placed to give advice on product selection and can be expected to provide good quality emergency lighting products. ICEL also runs a one-day Emergency Lighting Competent Engineer course, comprising the essential aspects of BS5266, parts 1, 7, 8, & 10. Delegates who successfully complete the course qualify for an ICEL Certificate. For more information, visit www.icel.co.uk
who occupy the buildings,’ explained Walker. ‘I challenged P4 to show how this could be translated into a major, long-term commitment to our needs, and how important factors, such as reliability, whole life savings and energy saving could be built in. A paramount consideration was how the installation and conversions would cause minimum disruption to the day-to-day running of the Inns. I have been particularly impressed by the way the FASTELlink system can be installed one stage at a time to allow for future upgrades as and when funding is available. I am keen to utilise the integration of LED products within the installation to provide the added benefits associated with improved design life and elegance compared to the old 8W bulkhead.’

A GIRL’S

Nothing brings out the best in a display like good lighting. Whether it’s precious gemstones, luxury leather goods or crystal glassware, everything looks better under the right light
DIAMOND BRIGHT
Lighting the retail environment successfully takes specialist knowledge. Of course, it’s perfectly possible to see by the light of a couple of fluorescent high street travel agents do just that. But for high-end retailers – or those with a desire to outclass the competition - good lighting has been proven again and again to increase customer footfall, and ultimately sales. So why wouldn’t you call in the experts? 40
An independent jeweler, Jacobs of Reading, did just that, and is now showcasing its stock in a whole new light. The family-owned firm has invested in new cabinet lighting systems to enhance its stunning collections of diamonds, jewellery and watches. A series of bespoke luminaries were created by Altrinchambased Display Lighting as part of a wider improvement programme to the premises. This involved updating the lighting system for a range of different jewellery displays throughout the premises. Paul Breedon, managing director of Display Lighting, described the importance of providing customised LED lighting and low voltage systems to highlight precious metals and gems: ‘All of our lighting is bespoke, and due

Jacobs’ new display lighting solution
Gems and jewels sparkle with an allure that only partially comes from within
to advancements in technology we now supply systems that mix cool white and warm white LEDs to create the specific colours required to enhance both silver and gold metals. ‘LED operates at a lower temperature and is longer lasting, significantly reducing energy bills. Plus, stylish and effective lighting attracts passers-by, increasing sales and profitability. This is essential for jewelers such as Jacobs, with thousands of loyal customers and more than 60
years of experience in the trade. The company is founded in tradition, but it also moves with the times.’ As anyone who’s ever been drawn to a jeweler’s window knows, the gems and jewels sparkle with an allure that only partially comes from within. Clever use of lighting adds so much to the displays, bringing exotic gemstones to life, adding depth the gold and silver, and releasing the fire within diamonds. In truth, without good lighting, a jeweler could possibly lose trade faster than any other high street retailer. Adam Jacobs, partner at Jacobs of Reading, explained why he decided to make the change to LEDs: ‘Not only does the right lighting make our products stand out, but by using LED luminaries there is virtually nil maintenance required as well as a reduced running cost. We also have total control over lighting levels and colour balance –something we’ve never quite been able to achieve until now. ‘Proper lighting shouldn’t cast shadows; it should allow quality pieces to speak for themselves. After all, the jewellery is the star attraction. ‘You can have the finest store and the most exquisite jewellery, but you don’t want to fall down when presenting it – lighting ambience and focus is crucial to starting a positive sales experience.’ He continued: ‘We have a rich history and are dedicated to providing the best possible customer environment, balanced with monitoring our cost base. lighting presents our products far more favourably than our previous system and outputs significantly less heat - as a result we use less air conditioning and have reduced power bills.’ Breedon believes that jewellers are becoming better educated about the clever use of lighting to showcase products by creating mood and atmosphere: ‘Lighting is not a luxury,’ he explained, ‘ it’s a prerequisite of a forward-thinking company achieving the edge over other jewellers on the high street. ‘There is a fine balance to be achieved when lighting display cabinets, as retailers are now recognising. These days there are some fantastic bespoke lighting systems to choose from – with LED providing a wide angle of light and featuring a long and economical lifespan. ‘There is no doubt that the most important part of the store is the jewellery showcase counter. Over-illuminate and you’ll create an off-putting glare, but equally, badly lit areas make it difficult to focus on smaller pieces. ‘Retailers know that correct lighting creates better-looking products, which can mean more sales. That’s why our customer base is increasing in this sector, replacing conventional lighting methods but also creating a point of difference in the lighting we provide for each individual jeweller. We have hopefully helped them to see things in a new light.’ 42
Another high-end retail market to benefit from a specialist lighting scheme is Harrods’ new and aptly named, Rooms of Luxury. As these are the first spaces that visitors see when they enter the store via the main entrance in Brompton Street, a specialist lighting treatment was a must. Tal was chosen to design the lighting for the new department. The Belgian lighting manufacturer utilised its 4U profile with a full chrome finish to reflect the sumptuous atmosphere of the store. The profiles have been used to create large rectangles of various dimensions, whose composite length runs to more than 300m. ‘This profile uses fluorescent lighting to create a general diffusion of upward light, and the spotlights can also serve to highlight underside areas’, explained Karel Festjens, Tal’s director. ‘This makes the halls at Harrods appear larger and more imposing, and can also provide additional accents so the rooms are cocooned in a luxurious atmosphere. In addition it will consume less electricity.’ Tal believes that the Harrods project was the perfect opportunity to finally put itself on the international map. Festjens elaborated: ‘As a relatively small player in the lighting sector, this prestigious project gives us the necessary credibility on the international market. Choosing the perfect lighting for Harrods was a difficult task; during the process we supplied different test concepts. However, the fact that we found a solution that Harrods immediately approved demonstrates that, as a lighting manufacturer, we have a lot to offer.’ The luxury retailer commended Tal on offering lighting systems that combined an excellent finish with the latest lighting technology, fulfilling both of its main requirements.

LIGHTING CONTROLS

WITH THE
JONES’
Lighting control systems may be standard equipment in the commercial environment, but they’re still capable of raising an eyebrow – as well as a blind or two – in domestic settings A growing number of higher end new builds are being designed to incorporate control systems to make the life of the owners simpler, but they’re also pretty green, so they’re helping save money and energy in the process. Lutron’s latest technology has been used by lighting designer, Mark Kavanagh in a stunning new property. Primarily built of glass and wood, the architect made the most of the stunning Cotswolds’ location, and Kavanagh, of Future Light Design added the finishing touch. He explained: ‘Having previously integrated Lutron HomeWorks light control technology into her first home, my client knew just what Lutron light controls were made of. The ease of
functionality, reliability and their suitability for use in modern homes, as well as the fantastic results they could achieve and so wanted to recreate the same effortless control and effect i n her second home but on a smaller budget. ‘Set in such a stunning location encompassing such incredible natural beauty, it was crucial that the lighting should make the most of the incredible views and expanses of daylight on offer from the large glass windows overlooking the lake. That’s why, despite budget restrictions, we decided not to compromise on quality.’ The development of 167 cabins attracted strict regulations for exterior lighting so all attention focused on the interior. Consumers are increasingly willing to invest in the most modern innovations LIGHT IN DARK PLACES
A GRAFIK Eye QS six-zone system and separate Sivoia QS shading zones were installed, with multiple keypads providing control of lighting and electrical equipment. Occhio light fittings with coloured filters were suspended throughout the main living areas to create dramatic pools of light on the ceiling. Areas that didn’t require such intense lighting had Part L compliant, LED downlighters fitted. Kavanagh continued: ‘By using GRAFIK Eye and Sivoia QS systems, it was possible for the zones of light in every area to be controlled individually, which was perfect for a space that’s surrounded by light by day and needs to be thoughtfully lit by night. By including motorised blackout shades, which were pre-wired, it provided that extra bit of control, allowing the client the opportunity to maximise the use of the daylight with ease and provide extra privacy, when desired.’ Hamilton Litestat may be better known for its high quality light switches and plate ranges, but as energy costs escalate, energy efficiency is becoming a fundamental prerequisite of any project and the advent of LED lighting is a key element in reducing these costs. Hamilton’s Mercury system offers a comprehensive, easy-to-use solution for controlling day-to-day lighting scenarios from simple dimming through to more elaborate scene-setting programmes. It’s also available with DMX control for more complex LED colour washing effects, meaning that even home users can do anything from manually dimming a light to creating colourful lighting programmes to transform interiors. The system is easily programmable, and can be integrated with other products, including the Mercury multi-room audio system for an entire lighting and sound package. Control options include switch plates in a variety of designs, infrared remote control and wireless control via
iPad and iPhone using a downloadable app. With the current trend for modernising living space, Schneider Electric has launched Connect – a wireless control system, designed to place the user in control. Schneider’s Jocelyn Mottram said: ‘It is no longer enough to have a contemporary interior, consumers are increasingly willing to invest in the most modern innovations in order to increase the comfort, efficiency and safety of their home.’ For functionality, the system is controlled by a central unit, which can be accessed remotely, providing reassurance that lighting is off. Connect enables control of devices, as well as building functions, such as lighting, blinds and presence detection. The system, which utilises the latest generation of intelligent Z-Wave rerouting technology to ensure the most reliable connection for optimum performance, is wireless for ease of installation. Helping homeowners to tighten security, especially when away from home, the system allows the user to remotely check whether the curtains are open or the lighting, heating or audio system has been switched on. Mottram added: ’We have heavily invested in developing Connect, which we believe will revolutionise the future of UK homes. As home automation continues to move into the mainstream, this offers a lucrative opportunity for installers looking to diversify into this arena.’

Diagonal 123 building in the heart of Barcelona’s urban regeneration project, 22@Barcelona, transforming 200 hectares of industrial land in the Spanish city into one of the most impressive examples of urban regeneration in Europe. However, the creation of such a wealth of commercial spaces is also putting pressure on the owners of the buildings 54
As one of the fastest growing energy consuming sectors, it is no wonder that governments are looking at ways to incentivise the ‘greening’ of commercial buildings
to make their properties attractive to would-be purchasers and tenants. Designed and built by Dominique Perrault Architecture, Diagonal 123 stands out thanks to its modernist lines and reflective glazing. However, Oscar Perena from commercial property consultancy, Cushman & Wakefield, explains why the building needed to make more than just an architectural

‘The building is predicted to achieve savings year on year of 188,000KWh of energy, 122 tonnes of CO2 emissions and 25,000 in energy costs’ statement to attract tenants: ‘We wanted to differentiate Diagonal 123 and provide the ultimate in added value. To do this, we decided to go down the route of improving the building’s energy certification.’ Efentia was commissioned to carry out a comprehensive audit of Diagonal 123’s energy consumption and the building was given a ‘D’ rating. Efentia recommended a variety of ways to achieve a ‘B’ rating - the most cost-effective being the installation of Lutron’s Quantum total light management system. Lutron’s solution employs a number of strategies to achieve maximum cost and energy efficiencies, including daylight, occupancy, time clock, target set point (light level tuning) and emergency lighting control. All of these elements give occupants and business owners the flexibility to adapt work environments to meet changing business requirements. Quantum also features software to control, monitor, and report on the lighting usage in the building. The system not only provides an opportunity for facilities managers and building owners to reduce energy consumption and operating costs, it enables users to manage DALI ballasts and other high efficacy light sources and dim them down to one per cent of full output. Processors were installed on each floor of the building, ensuring that the system could be upgraded 56
or adapted to suit any future tenants’ lighting requirements. Lutron’s Energi Savr Node modules were installed and linked back into the Quantum system for ultimate control. A smart module that allows for easy integration of wired and wireless occupancy sensors, daylight sensors, and light controls with digital ballasts, 0-10 V dimming loads and switching loads, Energi Savr Node enabled the variety of fluorescent and LED light sources throughout Diagonal 123 to be controlled simply and effectively. Following the installation, Efentia carried out another audit of Diagonal 123’s energy efficiency: the building had moved from a ‘D’ to ‘B’ rating. With savings of 46 per cent in lighting power alone, compared to preQuantum measurements, the building is predicted to achieve savings year on year of 188,000KWh of energy, 122 tonnes of CO2 emissions and 25,000 in energy costs. Javier Segovia, from Lutron commented: ‘Diagonal 123 has benefitted significantly from the installation of our Quantum system. Thanks to the cost savings that are possible with the efficient management of electric light, not only has the energy certification at Diagonal 123 improved, leading to reduced operational costs but end users can now benefit from the comfort that total light management brings to the working environment.’

Balancing the
books
Money-making ventures need sympathetic lighting to add to visitor enjoyment, while of course, observing H&S issues – oh, and remaining energy-efficient. Piece of cake for the designer then … So, the safety and security of visitors has been taken into account – check. The lighting is elegant, unobtrusive and quite simply, beautiful – check. Energy efficient products have been utilised wherever possible – check. And of course, the design can all be altered at the flick of a switch to highlight changing displays and exhibits, re-focus visitor attention or light a different event? If that’s not a resounding ‘yes’, then it’s back to the drawing board. Simple economics means that any commercial enterprise, whether a shopping mall, nightclub or theatre, needs to make a profit in order to survive. And to survive, it needs to keep drawing the crowds by continually changing its offering.

Following a detailed ‘The blend of fixtures and controls brief, David Hurst at Full-On has opened up a wealth of lighting Lighting Design developed possibilities for the museum’ a scheme, to impact both exterior and interior. Initially a pilot project, the re-lamping brief was expanded to include the entire casino with LED lamps used throughout the building, including on the gaming floors, in the restaurant and reception areas. Sylvani’s Hi-Spot RefLED ES50, candle ToLED, PAR 30 RefLED, and GLS A60 ToLEDo were chosen for their energy saving capabilities and ease of retrofitting – an important consideration when upgrading rather than designing a new concept, which is often forgotten. David Roffey of BN Maintenance, which managed the upgrade, believes it was a success, in terms of cost saving and improving the environment for guests: ‘Cost was a serious factor throughout this project, which is why using a variety of LED lamps was the obvious answer. Since the installation of energy efficient LEDs, we have seen a 15 per cent reduction on our overall energy consumption. The convenience of having a combination of dimmable LEDs that fit the most common luminaires prevented the extra cost of
replacing existing ones, and ensured the re-lamping process ran smoothly. ‘A surprising, but welcome bonus was the lack of reflection from hard surfaces. It creates a more relaxing environment and prevents unnecessary strain on the eyes, which is beneficial for customers visiting the establishment. ‘We were also very impressed with the clean, clear light rendering for the low use of wattage.’ By working with Sylvania, the lighting designers were able to integrate new LED lamps into the casino’s existing fittings. ‘The convenience of having a wide selection of LED lamps to choose from was a real bonus,’ explained Roffey. ‘We found we had better control over expected light and light rendering in many situations, whether that was interior décor or spot lighting. This, coupled with their dimmable functions, made it easier for us to fix each fitting into the correct position and provide the best light for the area and the objects within it.’ The Hi-Spot RefLed ES50 has been used throughout large areas in the casino, including the restaurant and main gambling halls. It can be fitted into all GU10 and GZ10-type luminaries. The 350lm ES50 is available in 2700K Homelight, 3000K Warm white and 4000K Cool white colours, with a beam angle of either 25° or 40°; the 25° delivers 1200 candela, plus the 40° delivers 600 candela in the warm white colour temperatures. For this energy-focused project, LEDs were an obvious choice; offering up to 80per cent energy savings compared to incandescent bulbs, the lamps specified will provide a significant contribution to the expected 15 per cent reduction in overall energy consumption.

Glowing with success The headquarters of the Bank of Georgia in Tbilisi, glows from within thanks to the specification of translucent concrete in its interior design The office
listed as a national monument, is characterised by amazing architecture and was the headquarters of the Georgian ministry for highway eingineering before being taken over by the Bank of Georgia. In 2007, AG&P, Architectural Group was charged with the redevelopment and rebuilding. The ambitious young team of architects went back to the main architectural idea of the building - to blend it with nature and allow light through. Lucem light transmitting concrete was specified, with thousands of embedded optical fibres channelling light through the translucent 68
concrete of the wall and counter claddings. Walls, corridors, reception areas, offices and consultation desks appear to glow from within. Altogether, 300sq m of Lucem concrete were used in different sections of the new headquarter building. The tellers‘ office on the ground floor lobby is extraordinary impressive, lined with white Lucem Line panels. The corridors and reception in the asset management department are no less spectacular as the ceiling was clad with the translucent concrete, injecting an element of transparency into solid walls. The concrete panels have embedded optical fibres, which channel the light through them, using highly efficient LED-panels as a light source.

‘The unmatched beauty of Longwood Gardens inspired me in so many ways’ exhibition there have been selling out weeks in advance and iPhone/iPad apps have been made available on iTunes. The historic gardens have antique glasshouses, not dissimilar to those at Kew, and the venue regularly hosts world-class musical and arts events, as well as educational programmes. Munro’s ‘Light’ consists of six large-scale outdoor installations, plus two within the four-acre Grand Conservatory, and a small collection of illuminated sculptures in the Music Room. There are many new works by the Wiltshire-based artist as well as neverbefore-seen views of Longwood at night. ‘The unmatched beauty of Longwood Gardens inspired me in so many ways,’ said Munro. ‘It’s been an exciting artistic challenge. I hope that guests will see in these works the beauty of melding light and landscape to become one.’ THE INSTALLATIONS:
Forest of Light is a serene woodland of 20,000 illuminated stems scattered along a forest walk. Water Towers is a monumental maze of 69 towers in the water meadow, which seem to move in a glowing dance as they change colour in synchronisation with music. In Waterlilies, Munro pays homage to Longwood’s iconic flower by floating platters of shimmering CDs onto the large lake. Nearby on the banks, the 7,000-stem Field of Light beckons visitors toward its enchanting glow. Arrow Spring artfully mixes the horticultural splendour of salvias and sparkling LEDs to create a meandering hillside stream, and for Candlelight, Munro placed ceramic candles lit with xenon along the beams and angled mirrors of Longwood’s tree house, to refract their glowing light. Inside the conservatory, the orangery is hung with six snowballs suspended from the ceiling. Each features a chandelier that is more than nine feet in diameter and encircles 127 glass balls. Light Shower rains 1,600 drops of twinkling light over the flooded fern floor, creating a magical reflection that intensifies the luminous shower. Finally, the Music Room features a collection of six smaller sculptures by Munro Beach without Sand, Restless Fakir, Gnasher’s Big Raspberry, Boogie Woogie Tower, Rapunzel’s Towers and Mettabhavana. One of these smaller pieces - Mettabhavana - is a model for an extraordinary building. ‘I saw it in a dream,’ explained Munro. ‘I couldn’t tell where the light was coming from; it seemed to shine through the walls.’ Munro has made small contributions to group shows in the US in the past, including Contemplating The Void at New York’s iconic Guggenheim Museum, and a show of contemporary glass at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery. ‘Longwood Gardens is thrilled to host Bruce Munro’s first large-scale exhibition in the US,’ said director, Paul Redman. ‘His imaginative works will enchant and amaze our guests with their beauty and ingenuity, but also inspire them to see and experience gardens in a whole new way. ‘What also appealed to us about Bruce’s work is its focus on low-energy output and his sensitivity to the landscape. ‘Bruce shares Longwood’s commitment to sustainable practices.’ 78
