INTRODUCTION DAY UNDER OR A DAY OUT? Only a month ago, I was waxing lyrical about the end of winter, brighter days to come and the possibility of some sun to lessen our dependence on artificial lighting. Today I’m swaddled like something from a Christmas nativity scene against sub zero temperatures, artic snowfall – and most importantly – dark grey skies of February. So much for that theory!

I suppose it just proves how dependant we are on good lighting for our homes and places of work. Here at TL, we’ve been looking at the potential healing properties of lighting – it’s a fascinating subject, which deserves research.

Let’s face it, if, by introducing patient-friendly forms of lighting to our hospitals and clinics, we can reduce patient recovery times by even 10 per cent, it would make a huge difference to the beleaguered NHS. And it wouldn’t do those same patients any harm either.

Have you ever spent time on a hospital ward at night? I remember coming round from an anaesthetic with a migraine. Unfortunately, the rows of overhead lights were located directly above the bed heads and were all controlled with a single wall switch. The only solution the staff had was to switch them all off, leaving the entire ward, including the patients and their visitors, in pitch darkness.I can’t imagine how the nursing staff coped when it came to dishing out the evening medication or filling in patient charts that night, but the lights remained off and the ward collectively enjoyed its only dark night during my stay. The rest of the time it was brighter than a beach in Ibiza both night and day - hardly conducive to a speedy recovery.

When was the last time you visited a museum or an art gallery? If you’ve avoided them since school days and your only memories are of dusty halls, hushed voices and strange, musty smells, its high time you paid your local venue a visit.

Lighting technology – particularly the advent of the LED – is turning these bastions of antiquity into modern, must-visit venues for the masses. These days, they’re well-lit, bright spaces that positively encourage visitors. The only potential cloud on the horizon is our lack of knowledge of the effects of LEDs on the heritage that’s on display. We have to hope that the research done to date on the effects of this new lighting means that the artwork and artefacts we enjoy today will continue to be protected for many generations to come.

OBITUARY Reg Payne, founder of Fotolec Technologies, now known as GlassGuard, has died following a short illness.

Production manager, Chris Wright paid tribute to him, saying: ‘Reg Payne will be greatly missed, although never forgotten, by all the members of staff at GlassGuard.

‘Not only was Reg, along with wife Beryl, the founder of the company, he was also central to day-to-day working life and always found time to chat to everybody, make jokes and share stories.’

Q. Did you have a conventional

childhood? Where did you grow up and go to school?

No I didn’t have a traditional childhood.

My father was a civil engineer and was sent to various places. One of those was the Outer Hebrides, so between the ages of four and nine, I spent most of my days in the wilds, by the beach. I would say it was one of the times that most informed my character today.

After that, we came back to Edinburgh.

eau McClellan is a big name in lighting design, a really, really big name. In just over a decade, he has carved out a new career working with some of the most respected lighting companies in Europe as well as setting up his own studio and production facility.

Moving from his artistic roots as a sculptor, to creating fantastical bespoke fittings that are recognized as artworks in their own right is something McClellan seems to shrug off as not being anything other than perfectly usual.

His first commercial collection won him no less than four Red Dot design awards – thought by many to be the most prestigious of accolades, so what next for the man with the golden touch?

Q. Were your parents artistic?

Well, my father was a civil engineer, so I get the technical side of things from him, and my mother worked in fashion, running a boutique, so that gave me a creative side too!

Q. I understand you trained as a sculptor. Do you still sculpt?

Yes, I did train as a sculptor, and I do still sculpt.

My preferred material to sculpt in is forged steel.

Q. That could be seen as a far cry from lighting design, although I believe the transition was via a

commission for an artwork that involved illumination. Where did you go to start learning about lighting design?

I don’t think it’s such a great departure. I’ve always been fascinated by natural light, and spending so much time in a forge, I always think you can’t get better than a naked flame: it’s a fantastic light source.

It was a commission that got me started in lighting design. I had been working with stainless steel and glass. After that first commission, I realised it was something I wanted to get into.

Q. What about the technical aspects? Did you find it necessary to retrain, or do you employ lighting experts to make your designs possible?

As an artist I was taking old techniques and producing contemporary pieces of sculpture, so after I decided I wanted to be in lighting, I decided to take a sabbatical to find out more about the industry.

It was fantastic. I went to Hong Kong, Milan, Germany and just tried to gain as much information and experience as possible. A real turning point for me was when I visited Euroluce and found German lighting manufacturer, Brumberg’s stand. It was incredible, it was about five or six years ago yet they had this fantastic range of LEDs and fibre optics.

I ended up talking to the people from Brumberg and explained how I wanted to be a lighting artist.

They sent me a container of just bits and pieces and I spent the next six months playing around with them.

Eventually, I built my first ever large-scale chandelier.

Brumberg got to hear about it and asked me if I’d do a collection for them and that’s how the Beau McClellan for Brumberg collection came about.

Q. Your first commercial collection won four Red Dot Design Awards. Did that unprecedented level of attention make the job of launching your lighting career easier, or did it add to the weight of expectation?

Obviously, it’s great to be recognised for your work.

It’s nice to know what I was doing in lighting design was going in the right direction, and yes, it made things easier to an extent. Winning awards is not what drives me though.

Q. Do you work alone, or with a team?

No, I don’t work alone any more. I’m travelling so much that I have a team working with me. I have a full team of engineers and an R&D department too. The main design hub is right here in Portugal, as is the assembly hub.

Q. I understand your studio is in Portugal.

What area of the country - and why? Surely London, Madrid or New York would be more accessible to the design industry?

Maybe, but many people underestimate Portugal as a design destination. There is a lot happening creatively in the Algarve, Lisbon and Oporto - those places would really be among my tips for design cities for 2012. There’s really a lot happening culturally there, from restaurant festivals to music and much, much more. I love it there, it’s so beautiful and inspiring, I wouldn’t be anywhere else. Our design studio is in Loulé, a town in the Algarve.

Portugal

Q. I know Loulé well, so can understand why you’d want to be based there. What tends to work for you as inspiration?

I’m inspired by all sorts of things that surround me.

For one of my projects – Cardume - it was all about the natural world. Cardume means shoal of fish in

Sometimes inspiration comes very quickly and other times, you have to know when to walk away Portuguese, and here it was about evolving reflections similar to a sun-dappled underwater world.

Another time I was flying in to Hong Kong airport.

In these high buildings on every floor, there seems to be a different colour of light. Someone will use a daylight tube in their room and then their neighbours down below are using some halogen lights, then the neighbours below them are using LEDs to create an effect in their home. You have these multi coloured blocks of light and I wanted to recreate this by turning the whole cityscape upside down to achieve something very, very special in terms of a light sculpture.

That’s how Metropolis, a lighting sculpture for a private residence in Emirates Hill, Dubai came about.

Q. How long, on average does it take you to design a commercial collection?

I’ve completed my first product collection, which launched last September at the designjunction event, which was part of London Design Festival. It took around four or five years to develop. We have a base of around nine designs, many of which come as table, wall and task lights to give customers complete flexibility where they can use the products, we can evolve the collection more quickly and we hope to continually add to it.

What I’m really coming back to at the moment though is my bespoke work, that’s something I’m looking to develop further.

Q. What are the main problems or stumbling blocks you’ve come up against?

One of the main problems I encounter with LED lights is the colours of RGB: the primary red, green and blues. These colours tend to be very harsh, so my team and me have spent a lot of time trying to break them down to make them much more pastel in colour. We take the coloured light and magnify it to make it much stronger, then push it through a hand-ground, optical crystal. Because the optical is frosted on the outside, it dissipates the harsher colours to give us a more pleasing pastel shade.

Q. Have you had any spectacular failures along the way?

Yes, of course, but they tend to happen behind closed doors - before I assemble the pieces for a client for instance. We test everything rigorously, and when you are trying to push the boundaries, it’s inevitable some things will not work as you’d hoped.

But I believe there isn’t really such a thing as a failure, it’s all experience to make you better as a designer!

Q. What do you think will be the next big development in lighting technology?

Everyone’s looking to do their bit for the environment.

Specifying products that are more ecologically sound is a massive trend in interiors right now. And that’s where LEDs come in and will develop into a much more mainstream part of the lighting business. It makes sense really; they have so many advantages over halogen bulbs.

Q. What do you believe the future of lighting to be?

Flexibility. That’s the key.

Customers increasingly want to have something unique when lighting their homes, and LEDs offer a great range of colour options. This is another reason they have really taken off. Nomad, a chandelier concept I first exhibited last year, can be controlled by iPad, so you can have the colour combinations you want.

Nomad is also the perfect example of another future lighting trend: democratisation. Nomad is fully modular, you can specify how many elements you want. It’s what we call a ‘plug and play’ approach to lighting. We want people to have fun with it. Just because you don’t have space for the full version, doesn’t mean you can’t buy in to the creative vision.

Q. If you could choose one person to create a piece for, who would it be? Why? That’s easy. It would have to be the late Steve Jobs.

For me, he was one of the most inspirational people of our generation and without question, one of the biggest losses to design. He never backed down and made sure every product that went to market was flawless.

PAINTING WITH COLOUR Lighting plays a key role in enticing customers into retail outlets.

But how can retailers adopt innovative lighting techniques to draw the crowds? Fiona Harkin, managing editor of Culture at Stylus, a B2B intelligence service, highlights some of the latest lighting techniques that are being adopted by retailers

Cutting-edge lighting: Projection mapping and transformative light

M

onumental in scale and spectacular in effect, projection mapping is increasingly popular with brands, creatives and the public alike. It has great potential for use as an entertainment channel, feeding the public’s hunger for more immersive experiences that amuse, delight and inspire. It is often used in urban environments and its experiments in pure colour and abstraction reflect a growing need to energise city streets. It is also a way to transfer the boundless creativity of the Internet – as well as its infinite space – into the real world. Projected light is being used to transform threedimensional objects and architectural structures. Buildings appear to have a moving surface, and geometric objects appear to change shape, due to projection mapping digital graphics onto their surfaces.

With endless possibilities and appeal, it is not surprising that projection mapping techniques and displays have been adopted by brands across the world to transform buildings, such as urban retail outlets and museums, into creative and enticing displays. Existing spaces are being reinvented with permanent installations that affect the colour and quality of light in them.

Projection mapping promises unbeatable viral content and is popular with brands (most commonly used to suggest creativity, technology and speed) as it is capable of projecting any image and message in numerous different ways. Both mimicking reality and undermining it, projection mapping is essentially subversive, using buildings and objects as a canvas (albeit a canvas that is not necessarily blank). It represents the expansion of the physical through virtual space – a timely topic.

Another lighting technique becoming increasingly popular in the commercial world is transformative lighting.

The use of coloured light to alter the perception of a physical space is increasingly making us question how we see the world that we live in. Artists, designers and architects are using immersive or projected colour to challenge what we know about our surroundings. Existing spaces are being reinvented with permanent installations

Artists, designers and architects are using immersive or projected colour to challenge what we know about our surroundings that affect the colour and quality of light in them. Coloured gels that tint light in buildings immerse visitors in colour, while allowing them to view the altered world around them.

A grand example of using coloured lighting and projection mapping to promote a brand was for Bombay Sapphire. In June 2011, Drive Productions used a striking mix of pure, branded colour lighting for Bombay Sapphire’s ‘Project Your Imagination’ campaign: the three-minute-long display was projected onto Battersea Power Station.

Efficient ballasts Helvar has launched the HID electronic ballast range to satisfy the increasing demand for energy efficient lighting and prevalence of electronic ballasts in modern luminaires. The range comprises EP-h electronic ballasts for 20W, 35W, 70W, 100W and 150W metal halide.

The EP-h fulfills the need for high-quality, modern and compact luminaires that operate with an increased efficiency on previous models. It ensures low energy consumption with its A2 energy efficiency classification and the energy savings with EP-h are clear and measurable when compared with traditional magnetic ballasts.

‘With the new ballasts, we have industry-leading efficiency figures that are compatible with the complete power range across three ballast sizes,’ explains Helvar’s Kelvin Lay. LED Engin demonstrated the first single LED emitter capable of halogen-like dimming at Strategies in Light, California last month.

Using a single emitter and constant current source, together with standard 0 -10V dimmers, the colour temperature of the light will get warmer as it dims.

WARM ENOUGH? It has become the leading light source, and the name on everyone’s lips - the LED. As the technology continues to be at the forefront of major installations, Simon Leggett, managing director at OCG Lighting, discusses the challenge of LED thermal management

was a landmark year for the lighting industry. With the EU-wide ban on incandescent lamps finally coming into force, widespread adoption of LED technology became inevitable. Industry and media alike backed the move, from a Carbon Trust report encouraging businesses to switch to LEDs to save up to 50 per cent on energy bills, to the BBC predicting that LED technology could dominate the lighting market by 2015.

The media’s backing of LEDs is down to more than just timing. Behind the headlines there have been rapid technological advances, as manufacturers design more efficient and reliable products than ever before. A key milestone in this development

for widespread applications has been engineering a solution to the challenge of thermal management.

Thermal junction: a road block to high performance?

LEDs are solid-state semiconductor chips formed of substrate materials which, when electrically charged, allow current to flow from the positive side to the negative side of the chip, in one direction. When the charge carrying electrons recombines with electron holes within the substrates, energy is released in the form of photons (light) and heat.

The point at which the photon is released is known as the thermal junction and it is desirable to maintain the thermal junction temperature at, or below 60˚C. For every degree increase in thermal junction temperature above this optimum, there is an exponential increase in the degradation of the LED and its components, resulting in reduced useful life.

In order to achieve a broad spectrum of white light, blue LEDs are more commonly coated in a phosphor of varying thickness and colour, the quality of which contributes to the quality of light emitted, but also increases the build-up of heat at the thermal junction.

As the luminous efficiency of LEDs increases, the increased heat generated as a by-product needs to be ever more carefully managed Thermal management of the heat generated

by LEDs is vital to ensure consistent and stable light output. As the luminous efficiency of LEDs increases (the lumens generated per watt of power consumed), the increased heat generated as a by-product needs to be ever more carefully managed.

Several factors develop as heat escalates within the LED. The forward voltage begins to decrease, which can increase the load on the LED driver components. The forward current also increases in resistor driven circuits.

Continuous rising temperature will degrade the phosphor coating, which will shift the optical wavelength, resulting in white LEDs losing their colour stability and appearing more bluish.

Additionally, high thermal junction temperatures and overall thermal increases in the driver components will reduce the luminous efficiency of the LED, reduce light

output and accelerate lumen depreciation, thereby shortening useful life. It’s therefore vital to efficiently and effectively transfer heat rapidly from the LEDs’ thermal junction and surrounding components.

Ultimately, uncontrolled thermal rises will result in total failure of the LED and driver components.

Too hot to handle: understanding the problem Thermal management begins in the LED ‘platform’: the composition of LED chips mounted on a silicon wafer base. The materials used in the construction of this platform (including the adhesive) determine how effectively heat can be initially transferred from the thermal junction. The quality of the chip, and of the platform assembly, is key to the success of the

thermal management process. A high quality platform assembly will allow good heat transfer through to the main thermal management system of the unit, the external heat sink.

A high degree of developmental work has been undertaken in the LED industry to maximise the effectiveness of the external heat sink. The heat sink’s primary function is to expand the surface area necessary to quickly and efficiently dissipate the heat conducted from the LED platform. The material composition of the heat sink directly influences the efficiency of this process. Certain materials have a higher thermal conductivity, and a lower thermal resistance than others.

For example, copper has high thermal conductivity and would be an optimum material but is costly. Aluminium is the most commonly used material, but its thermal conductivity is nearly half that of the copper. The design of the ‘fins’ of the heat sink is also important to provide maximum surface area and optimum thermal airflow, while maintaining structural integrity and shape within specific dimensions to ensure functionality.

Heat can be effectively pumped away from LED junctions

It is as important to dissipate heat effectively from the LED platform, as it is to dissipate heat from the driver and its components. The smaller the unit, the greater this challenge becomes.

How to handle the heat Most LED products with a passive heat sink operate at a thermal junction temperature in excess of 80˚C or higher and therefore reduce to 70 per cent of their luminance after 25,000 to 30,000 hours. Liquid cooling technology or active heat pipe technology allows a far greater dissipation of heat, which ensures that the thermal junction temperature is maintained at or below 60˚C. OCG’s NeoBulb uses a patented thermal management system: the NeoPac Universal Platform (NUP). An LED emitter is assembled, which comprises a specified number of LED chips directly mounted onto a silicon substrate with high thermal conductivity.

This is then covered with a plastic cover that also serves as a secondary optic. The emitter is mechanically mounted onto the light engine using a highly conductive thermal interface material.

This engine is a copper heat pipe, housing a sealed, double-walled capillary system with a single droplet of water encapsulated in it.

The heat pipe is then sandwiched within a high quality, aluminium heat sink.

Heat is conducted from the LED chips through the silicone substrate and thermal interface material into the head of the heat pipe. The water droplet within the pipe heats up, evaporates, and runs along the length of

The aluminium heat sink surrounding the pipe draws heat from the water and disperses this to ambient through its fin design. The water within the pipe condenses and runs back along the length of the pipe within the capillary tube, re turning to the emitter.

The process of rapidly drawing heat from the emitter continues in this fashion, thereby providing an active and highly efficient thermal management system.

A bright future Effective and efficient thermal design is imperative if LEDs are to achieve widespread adoption. Heat pipe technology is an optimum solution, ensuring product longevity and ultimately better user value. This technological breakthrough, combined with increased market interest, means that the future of LED lighting certainly does look bright.

by Petr Kolmačka has been installed to highlight the famous City Hall Tower in Ostrava, the third largest city in the Czech Republic, and the administrative hub of the Moravian-Silesian region.

The city has a strong commercial heritage based on the heavy industries that grew up around its high quality black coal deposits, discovered in the late 18th Century. More recently, it has launched a big initiative to clean up the environment and control the many years of accumulated pollution, reinventing itself as the ‘City of Colours’, highlighting its equally rich history as a centre of innovation, creativity and education as a major university city.

The city’s first civic lighting scheme – City Hall - is helping to create a new cultural identity for Ostrava. City Hall in Masaryk Square is the largest municipal building in the Czech Republic with a tower reaching 85.6m high, inaugurated in 1930. The tower’s steel frame is clad in copper produced by the Vitkovice Iron and Mining Company, and weighs 155 tonnes. An observation deck at 73m offers commanding views of the city, and there is a clock on each of the four fascias, just below the viewing platform.

Kolmačka, Anolis’ brand manager for the Czech and Slovak Republics, who also studied in the city for six years, was approached six months ahead of the actual installation. He proposed that the four fascias of the tower would each be illuminated with a single Anolis RGBCW ArcPad Xtreme, one of the most powerful Anolis LED flood fixtures currently available.

One fitting provided even light distribution across the entire surface area of each elevation – even given the challenging texture of the copper cladding. The faces are washed with a selection of beautiful colours, including the standard day-to-day selection, which is a combination of eight cyan, blue and white scenes, based on the vibrant colours of Ostrava’s logo and other colours stipulated in the client’s specifications.

City Hall staff have the flexibility to change the colour of the tower lighting for special occasions, such as festivals and other public events.

The Anolis ArcPad Xtreme is a special outdoor fixture with two independent LED modules. The LEDs are densely populated, providing an extremely bright light output, and an IP 67 rating makes it ideal for exterior applications. The combination of RGB and white LEDs delivers a quality of white light, rarely equaled in competitive products.

Secured around the top of the observation deck are 20 units of Anolis ArcLine Outdoor Optic 40MC (multi-chip), so the top can either be matched or contrasted in colour to the elevation. Two Anolis ArcPower 360 drivers power the LED units, which are controlled by a Cyber Cue system, pre-programmed with the sequences that change every 30 seconds.

The lighting is programmed to switch on at dusk and off at dawn, and runs right through the night.

raditionally, lighting controls have been used to create moods - and they still play an integral part in producing the desired atmosphere in a home, office or public space. However, today they can also play an important role in creating energy efficient lighting systems by integrating daylight and electric light sources. This not only produces a welcoming and interesting interior environment but also provide flexibility, energy savings and reductions in carbon emissions.

Used properly, as well as saving energy, lighting controls will also extend the life of lamps and ballasts. Although lighting efficiency can be improved by changing lamps, control gear and fittings, it is lighting control that can bring really big savings.

The most obvious form of lighting control is the switch or manual dimmer, but an arguably better alternative is to switch the lights automatically in response to presence detection. PIR occupancy detectors can be hard-wired into either the luminaires or the marshalling box, and there are solutions for both switch start and high frequency fittings.

When you talk about efficiency, it doesn’t just mean electrical efficiency. It’s about sustainability and things lasting a long time When combined with daylight linking, even greater savings can be achieved. Again, systems are available for both switch start and high frequency fittings.

Simon Tilliard, director of energy at Envido, a provider of energy, low-carbon and sustainability solutions for private and public sector organisations, explains that the advances in lighting controls have made them much simpler to operate, which has increased efficiency: ‘When we’re dealing with a lot of our clients, one of the things that’s quite surprising is how many of them have actually got lighting control systems within their buildings,’ he says. ‘But you still find they’re not operating their buildings efficiently.

‘What I’ve found with a lot of lighting control systems is they tend to be pushed into the corner and they gather dust.’ Where complex lighting control systems have been installed, Tilliard says they have often fallen into disuse because the person who was originally trained to use them has moved on.

‘In many case you might find that they’re on default parameters and you often find that they’ve been set up to be on almost all the time.’

Tilliard says Envido’s approach is to simplify the system.

‘We’re trying to rely more on the intelligence that is starting to be built into the luminaires themselves,’ he says.

‘The fact they have sensing built in, tends to make the system much easier to use.’

He singles out the Smart system by Thorlux Lighting as one that provides consistently good results. Envido turned to Thorlux when carrying out work for Reading Buses - changing all the sodium lighting in its garages to Smart controlled 210W T5 luminares, which created significant savings for the company.

‘They need lighting on for security, but it doesn’t need to be on at full level all the time,’ Tilliard explains. ‘This system brings up the level of illumination as someone is walking to the bus. Once they’re gone, it will turn itself back down again.’

While Envido specialises in commercial applications, lighting control systems can also be used to improve efficiency in homes.

Multiload Technology recently supplied a range of innovative lighting control equipment for a domestic barn conversion. Phil Gardner, head of technology at Greyblue Lighting Design, which took on the project, explains that the brief was: ‘to create an atmosphere that would turn a house into a home, to embed well thought out modern ideas to save energy and add value without using complex technology’.

This provides four moods plus full on-and-off for any number of lighting channels. It can control all light sources by providing a 0-10v signal to drive units such as LED drivers, fluorescent ballasts, low voltage transformers, neon and argon transformers.

Brian Cuthbertson, managing director of Multiload Technology, explains that using 0-10v drivers in the system results in 100 per cent efficiency, compared to 98 per cent where phase control systems are used.

The company believes a major benefit of its MoodMaker technology is that, because it’s analogue rather than digital, there is no software and no complicated programming requirement. And, because the system doesn’t use microprocessors and memory chips, Cuthbertson claims it is not corruptible, so the user will never have to call in a software engineer.

By developing ‘a new kind of analogue,’ Cuthbertson says they have created a product, which is ‘inherently reliable. A digital system might have 3000 systems but only need 10. What we’re saying is, here’s 10 functions, forget all the rest that may cause corruption,’ he explains.

The technology has recently won MoodMaker a place on the shortlist for the 2012 Lighting Design Awards in the Lighting Controls Category. And, while Cuthbertson

acknowledges that commercial properties, such as offices will tend to opt for a digital control system, MultiLoad Technology is not only for domestic environments.

Lighting Designer, AECOM turned to the company while working on the recent refurbishment of St Pancras Renaissance Hotel at London’s Kings Cross.

With a focus on preserving the historic atmosphere of the building while adapting its spaces for modern use, AECOM specified MultiLoad Technology’s VoltMaster intelligent transformers and analogue mains dimmers, controlled by its MoodMaker scene setting system.

Martin Valentine, who headed AECOM’s lighting design team, said: ‘All the fine area lighting scene controls are via MoodMaker, which is ideal given that it’s a powerful, configurable device which once set will stay 100 per cent stable.’

So, while lighting controls were once clumsy, difficult-to-use systems that often got forgotten, there are now many options for both home and the work place, which can help to achieve the desired lighting effect throughout the day and night, while providing significant savings in energy and money.

Most of us work under typical task lighting. Suspended from the ceiling or directly on the desk, office lighting has hardly been known for its creativity, but, as Emma Morgan finds, the future of the office looks set to change

T

he office lighting sector was one of the first to jump on the energy efficiency bandwagon. Usually housed in large commercial buildings, office lighting is generally spread across a large area and left lit for long periods of time.

Now it has embraced energy efficient methods, mixing this with decorative design has become top priority.

Ulysse Dormoy, managing director of Atrium explained: ‘A lot has to be said about having the right working environment, and as a result we have seen a significant shift in the use of decorative luminaries within commercial and office projects to soften the feel of the space.

‘While standard office and task lighting is still necessary, this can be broken up in a more creative manner using decorative elements.’

In the past, a decorative concept would simply not have been plausible. Faced with challenging maintenance and failure to meet relevant energy regulations, offices have shared static lighting design. Yet, with the development of LED technology, office lighting is finally getting the recognition it deserves – after all, we do tend to spend a majority of the day within the workplace.

Dormoy added: ‘We have seen a vast amount of development with LED light sources, and it is not inconceivable to think that the future of office lighting will be LED-based. There are already some

clients and projects where a high concentration of LEDs have been used. This does not appear to be a trend that is going to be reversed.’

Though we may still be waiting for a change to more decorative lighting elements in the TL offices, many businesses are on their way to a decorative department.

A riveting reception High street fashion retailer, River Island, has revamped the lighting in its London headquarters after approaching Prolight Design to produce a lighting scheme to incorporate triple head gimbal recessed downlighters chosen by the management team.

The office complex has recently gone through a re-development with old warehouse areas being made into additional offices, and the refurbishment of existing office space. Megaman’s LED AR111 and Crown Silver lamps were selected for their output, energy saving aspects and appealing design, to provide a warm but modern welcome throughout the reception, corridors, stairwells and office areas.

The AR111 LED lamps offer over 50,000 hours of life, and are a direct replacement for halogen spots in terms of both colour temperature and intensity, while providing energy saving of up to 80 per cent.

Following the installation of the Megaman lamps, Prolight has calculated an energy saving of 25.584kw, which equals to 13,918kg of CO2.

The future’s bright FUTURE Designs has created an aesthetically pleasing yet modern and energy efficient scheme for Doosan Babcock’s new HQ. The company supplies and constructs advanced steam generation technology for the power industry and is at the forefront of green technologies. It is one of the first in its industry to achieve certification for its Occupational Health Department.

Lighting was an important part of the minimalist design ethos and integral to the overall workplace scheme. In total, FUTURE Designs provided in excess of 1,600 fittings over two floors. A stateof-the-art lighting scheme was required; and its Exempler range provides a modern and vibrant feel.

The scheme was designed with energy in mind, incorporating a full smart lighting control system to provide the required light levels at any time of day without the over use of power.

David Clement, managing director of FUTURE Designs, commented on energy reductions throughout the working sector: ‘Lighting is the most visible form of energy use within a building, accounting for up to 50 per cent of the total energy bill. While computers and HVAC equipment might also use substantial amounts of energy, nothing is as visible or controversial as a lit lamp.

‘Pictures of empty, lit buildings shining like beacons across urban landscapes are splashed across the front page of newspapers to illustrate wasted energy in cities with little recognition that lighting might be needed for cleaning or security staff and no understanding that in many cases it actually saves energy and money by having lights on at a low level all the time, rather than switching them on and off regularly.’

He concluded: ‘It’s easy to switch the lights on at the start of the day and forget about their impact on the bottom line. But good lighting is a crucial component of both an organisation’s energy policy, an effective workplace and an efficient workforce and should not be neglected. Facilities managers must see the light.’

Into new territory Abacus has beaten off competition from a Chinese manufacturer to win a prestigious contract awarded by the Hong Kong Highways Department to manufacture and supply nearly 2,500 raising and lowering light columns, as part of a project to light a number of city roads throughout China’s New Territories East Region.

Originally designed for the railway industry in the 1960s, the column is now found on almost every station platform across the UK, as well as in sports stadia, airports, ports and construction projects worldwide. Abacus’ vice chairman in Shanghai, Luise Schafer said: ‘By the very nature of the highways environment, maintenance personnel can be at risk when carrying out their duties at height. The raising and lowering system provides safe and controlled lowering of the column via a spring or hydraulic counterbalance, allowing essential maintenance work to be carried out at ground level, thereby improving health and safety conditions.’

Abacus has completed a number of installations throughout China, including Shanghai Pudong International Airport and is currently putting the final touches to an apron lighting scheme at the country’s largest new airport construction project, Kunming New International Airport. Schafer concludes: ‘We’re delighted to have been awarded this contract as it reinforces Abacus’ position in road lighting projects in Hong Kong.

‘The Highways Department has already placed the order for the complete number of columns, and we will manufacture and dispatch quantities as the project progresses. This call off method is very good bread and butter business for the company and we value this relationship very much.’

The Government has launched its public consultation on Part P of the Building Regulations for England, which covers electrical safety in dwellings.

‘We welcome the indication that the Government is inclined to amend Part P, rather than remove it’, says Phil Buckle, director general of the Electrical Safety Council. ‘However, we still have concerns regarding the extent and impact of proposed changes, and we urge people to take part in this consultation.’

The public consultation offers three options for Part P: leaving it unchanged; revoking it: or revising it to reduce the costs and burdens it imposes.

Proposed amendments include reducing the amount of smaller-scale work that is notifiable and allowing unregistered installers to employ competent third-party electricians to inspect and test their work.

Part P was introduced in 2005 to reduce the number of electrical accidents, deaths and fires in UK homes and improve working standards among domestic contractors.

However, it has been criticised for its cost and the bureaucracy it imposes on contractors and building control bodies.

TRIDONIC TAKES CONTROL Tridonic and US manufacturer, Universal Lighting Technologies (ULT), have signed a licence agreement that allows ULT to use patented technologies to manufacture DALI control gear.

The agreement has now come into force.

In 1991 Tridonic was the first manufacturer to launch digital dimmable electronic ballasts for fluorescent lamps. In doing so, the company laid the foundation for the development of the DALI standard, which is now valid throughout the world.

Numerous products and basic patents for this standard, such as digital addressing and digital interface with potential separation, are part of the Tridonic portfolio.

Teaching rivalry Hager has announced a contract with Halesowen College to supply its Sollysta white moulded range of wiring accessories for installation throughout the campus.

Halesowen is a high achieving educational institution, with responsibility for providing higher education to 16-19 year olds in the region.

Mitchell James, contract manager at IMS Electrical, commented: ‘We have historically used a competitor’s product, but were attracted to Hager. I am pleased with the Sollysta range and especially think that the neutral loop terminal is a good idea’.

Lighting for medical applications is finally moving away from the harsh and costly glare of the fluorescent tube to something altogether more suited to wellbeing

he days when hospital wards gleamed under the glare of fluorescent tubes are coming to an end. And while it’s LEDs that have, once again, stepped in to offer a more economical option to traditional lighting, there’s much more to the new wave of lighting systems illuminating our hospitals and clinics than just a desire to cut energy bills.

Ambient mood lighting, designed to help calm anxious patients, systems that simulate natural daylight, and even fittings that can help fight the spread of infections such as MRSA, are now widely available.

Part of the £8m investment programme at BMI Healthcare’s The Park Hospital in Nottinghamshire was spent on a TRUMPF AmbientLine for the hospital’s new critical care unit. This therapeutic lighting system automatically creates individual

colour settings to mimic the natural cycle of day and night.

The gently changing light helps to keep patients’ body clocks in sync with the normal hours of daylight and night time, and has been shown to speed up recovery time.

Oliver Law, managing director of TRUMPF Medical Systems explains: ‘Lighting plays a crucial part in the recovery and wellbeing of the patient. Most clinical areas are flooded by bright, white light and this does little to help patients recover, or optimise staff working conditions. The added benefits of softer, often called mood lighting are the positive effects on patients and those working in the environment, too.

‘When a patient is undergoing surgery, many CT (Computerised Tomography) suites use soft lighting to ensure the patient is completely relaxed during the procedure. An operation is a traumatic experience for most patients, and the right environment and atmosphere is crucial to keeping them calm, which in turn will aid the recovery process.’

Last year, Philips stepped up its research into healing environments by opening a dedicated research facility in Eindhoven. The healing environment concept aims to accelerate and improve treatment outcomes, while simultaneously reducing the stress and anxiety often associated with hospitals.

‘There is an increasing body of evidence to suggest that patient-friendly, comforting environments not only reduce anxiety levels but also promote the healing process itself,’ said Henk van Houten, general manager at Philips Research.

One of the concepts being studied uses soothing lighting, and calming video images and sounds to help reduce stress levels of patients who are in the preparation room awaiting a PET-CT scan. This imaging technology is predominantly used to facilitate the diagnosis of cancer and the PET-CT preparation room has been identified as one of the most stressful environments for cancer patients.

Philips believes that as people’s access to information continues to increase, a new generation of patients is emerging who know more about their medical conditions and therapy options, and therefore demand greater choice in where and how they are treated. As a result, hospitals are becoming increasingly people-focused, and offering an environment and experience that helps patients cope with a difficult period in their lives is one way in which hospitals can achieve that objective.

Back at Park Hill, TRUMPF also equipped the new operating theatres with its adaptable iLED system which, as well as allowing surgeons to change the intensity of the lighting, also allows them to change the colour temperature for different procedures as well as the angle of the unit to minimise shadow.

The iLED fittings are mercury-free, only consume between 15-30 per cent of the power of traditional operating theatre fittings and have a life of around 30,000 hours. There is no warm up time either, meaning operations can begin straight away, and because they generate less heat, less ventilation is needed.

‘The use of LEDs also ensures that design can be optimised, and the overall footprint of the lights made smaller,’ explains Law. ‘This is important given the ever increasing need for new types of equipment in clinical environments.’

LED specialist, MHA Lighting has also experimented with coloured and ambient lighting. At the North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple, part of the North Devon Healthcare Trust (NDHT), traditional 72-watt fluorescents have been replaced with its 4000 Kelvin Tilite 20- and

The high colour rendering of 4000 Kelvin is precisely the colour the NHS requires to provide perfect light quality for examining patients, as it depicts skin pallor at its true colour. The company has also developed a bespoke dimming solution for NDHT, which allows fittings to be dimmed down to just five per cent. This has helped the Trust create what it believes to be a better healing environment, in which both patients and staff can control ward lighting levels during sleeping hours.

The LED technology is installed as a fully sealed unit to stop dust, bacteria and dead insects from gathering around warm light fittings and contributing to the spread of infection.

The LED’s long life span also eradicates the need for routine maintenance and bulb replacement, which again stops harmful bacteria from being distributed into the atmosphere.

‘Medical Trusts are always seeking ways to free up money for clinical care, and the battle against superbugs is continuous,’ explains managing director, Tom Harrison. ‘Not only is the NHS saving money on

operational costs for routine light maintenance, but our LED’s burn 20 per cent of the energy of traditional fluorescents.’

Although light in itself cannot really prevent infection, the design of it can,’ agrees Law. ‘TRUMPF’s AmbientLine, iLED and TruLight operating lights for example, are all designed in a way that ensures contamination is minimal. Flush fittings and smooth surfaces allow for ease of cleaning, while lightweight components make for manoeuvrability to allow cleaning staff to access them fully. ‘Where we do see benefits of infection reduction is in laminar airflow operating theatres, which manage the downward pressure of air. The operating lights have been designed to maximise airflow through their design, and in turn this ensures that ultra-clean canopy systems can work to their maximum effect, and doubtless reduce infection.’

Of course, not all solutions need to be at the cutting edge of technology – some of the most effective ideas can also be among the simplest. Light pull-cords in

toilet areas have long been identified as a potential source of infection, with germs easily transferred to hands.

In the past, effective cleaning has been hampered by the multifilament braid design, which enables dirt and germs to become embedded in the cord.

Now Actif Hygiene has developed the Biomaster Clean PullCord, with a durable, smooth, wipe-clean coating impregnated with Biomaster anti-microbial technology.

The non-PVC polymer coating can be retrofitted and used with standard cleaning products or disinfectants, while the inbuilt protection helps guards against the spread of bugs, such as E.coli and MRSA.

GLITTERING SUCCESS LED light boxes at John Lewis’ Westfield Stratford City store offer a winning formula for the retailer

he first energy saving LED light boxes to be used in a John Lewis store were fitted around the perfumery department within the new store located right in the heart of Westfield, Stratford City, Europe›s largest urban shopping centre and the gateway to the 2012 Olympic Park.

Standard A2 sized Razor LED light boxes were fitted to columns, while bespoke light boxes were fitted to the merchandising units for various brand concessions, including Chanel, Clinique, Dior, Estée Lauder, Lancôme and Yves Saint Laurent.

There were also single- and double-sided light boxes fitted to plinths to enable freestanding illuminated displays - which were positioned strategically around the department - to bring the product and promotions closer to the browsing customer. John Lewis approved the use of Razor LED light boxes to supersede the T5 illuminated Katana light boxes in the concessions of its new and refurbished perfumery departments. The sleeker flat profile snap frame, higher brightness and, more importantly, lower energy consumption were winning features for the ultra slim LED light box. The use of low energy LEDs in the fittings will contribute considerably towards the go-ahead retailer’s commitment to sustainability and energy savings. One of John Lewis’ retail designers commented: ‘The new LED light boxes are excellent. W&Co’s exceptional service has helped our success creatively, financially and sustainably by supporting our business case towards a sustainable design approach to branding.’

A number of other John Lewis stores, including Newcastle and Reading, have already been revamped using the LED light boxes, with more stores planned in the near future.

KNIFEDGE BACKS SNOW PATROL

Love techno Robe ROBIN 600E Spot and LEDWash moving lights were used to illuminate the Blue Room, one of five arenas at I Love Techno – one of the biggest and most successful rave experiences in Europe staged at the Flanders Expo in Ghent, and attended by an audience of 35,000.

The Robes were specified by the event’s lighting video and production designer, Thomas Boets of LD Productions, and supplied by Belgian company, L&L Stage Services.

Boets designed visuals for the whole event, using seventy-six 600 spots and twenty-six 600 LEDwashes in the Blue Room, which were rigged onto a series of trusses over the stage/DJ booth and two box trusses – one inside the other – with curved edges that were flown above the audience.

The trusses had white fabric stretched between them, providing a projection canvas for the ROBIN 600’s.

The LEDWash 600s were used to produce rich, bold and very bright colour mixes all around the room, which complemented a high-energy mix of music.

The lighting had to be dynamic and

very flexible, offering enough options for 12-hours of non-stop partying and dancing to the very best of techno – a challenge for any lighting rig, and also for operator Tom van den Burg, who used a Chamsys MQ 100 console for the visual mix.

The pace was intense and relentless and utilised all the features that the ROBIN 600 Spots and LEDWashes had to offer – colour and shutter chases, zoom and iris shaping were just a few of the effects explored throughout the evening to the delight of performers, fans and Boets himself, who was very pleased with the results.

He comments: ‘I have seen the amount of Robe fixtures continually increasing in the Benelux region, and the new ROBIN series units in particular tick so many boxes – they are small, super-bright, lightweight and very fast – all the attributes you need for the particular demands of dance event lighting.’

Animated graphics by creative agency, Knifedge provided an atmospheric backing to Snow Patrol’s performance of at the Children in Need Rocks concert at the MEN Arena, Manchester.

Knifedge’s animations were inspired by the golden eagle, which features prominently on the cover of the band’s album, Fallen Empires. In the four-minute visual sequence, eagle silhouettes fly over stylised fields and cityscapes, offering dramatic bird’s-eye views on abstract landscapes below.

The visuals were screened on seven giant LED screens during the two-hour concert organised by ex-Take That star, Gary Barlow. The event was attended by 14,000 people, and watched by a further 4.3 million viewers on television.

Jonathan Brigden, managing director at Knifedge, commented: ’We were delighted to support Snow Patrol at what turned out to be a brilliant concert for a great cause. We’re already working with the band on plans for its 2012 Fallen Empire Tour, and look forward to helping create a stunning series of events.’

A forest grew in Barking Square For one week only, a forest of light helped to transform Barking Town Square in East London into a magical wonderland.

The Square hosted two amazing lighting installations, aptly entitled Barking Illuminations, which were part of the Molten Festival. The displays transformed the square using exciting and interactive light-art.

An empty shop in the Bath House building ‘grew’ its very own forest, while the Town Square and the Town Hall became unrecognisable.

The dazzling Digital Urban Forest was created by cross-genre art studio, Creatmosphere, while Town Squared was produced by technical students from

the Central School of Speech and Drama.

Laurent Louyer of Creatmosphere described the site-specific work: ‘The Digital Urban Forest was inspired by the natural reflections and shadows of the tree-lined square into the glass-fronted retail space. We wanted to bring some of the

outside world in, and create a digitally generated forest that responded to the scale, layout and architectural structure of the building.

‘In terms of light sources and controls, the installation used analogue to the latest digital technology, bringing a mix of the best to create this imagined and surprising landscape.’

Modern lighting technology can deliver all of these requirements, says Dave Howell

T

he UK’s museums and galleries have, for several years embraced the latest technology to show their works to the public. Lighting is a vital component of any exhibition, but designers must also pay close attention to the needs of conservation. Today, galleries and museums have a number of light sources to choose from - starting with natural daylight.

With too much focus on conservation, museums with sensitive exhibitions can easily become little more than black boxes. The reality is that with proper management, a balance can be struck between the use of natural and artificial light. With the arrival of several new luminaries, especially in the LED sector, gallery and museum curators now have a diverse range of lighting technologies at their disposal.

The use of innovative lighting technologies, including LEDs not only enables more variety with lighting schemes, they can also offer energy savings as well. The National Gallery is a good example that will vastly reduce its carbon emissions by installing LED lighting throughout the building.

of its picture lighting systems. During this period, improvements to LEDs have made them a viable option, both as general light sources and for specialist applications to light works of art in museums and galleries. Trials of the new lighting system have taken place in Room 62 of the Sainsbury Wing and in the Wilkins Building, where the new lighting system has been installed in Rooms 6, 7 and 8. More recently this has been extended to Rooms 5 and 10.

As a result of these successful trials, the Gallery has decided to install LEDs in all galleries in the main Wilkins Building and in the Sainsbury Wing.

The new lighting will not only improve the public’s enjoyment of the collection, it will also reduce the Gallery’s carbon emissions by 400 tonnes each year.

Nicholas Penny, director, The National Gallery comments: ‘Our most ambitious plan is the commitment to install LED lighting in all of our galleries by the spring of 2013. This will represent a saving of 85 per cent on the energy used to illuminate the paintings in the Gallery’s collection. The decision comes after the successful trial of the lights in four of our galleries and their innovative application with a system that automatically adjusts roof light blinds according to the amount and angle of sunlight.’

Another museum that’s embraced LED technology to reduce its costs is the Inatura Nature Museum in Dornbirn, Austria. The lighting solution came from Zumtobel, and used 3-phase LED units, each with three LED spots of 2.6W each.

‘Using this new multifunctional LED lighting system opens up bright new prospects for Inatura,’ explained Peter Schmid, commercial director of Inatura.

‘We have already noticed a marked improvement in lighting quality at the museum, and many of our exhibits are now truly revealed in a new light. On top of which, this new and very energyefficient system will save us some €10,000 [£8,300] a year in energy costs.’

The LED cometh One of the key drivers for specialist applications in galleries and museums is ensuring conservation of the works is paramount. Natural light can of course and should be used, as with the St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art, where specially tinted double-glazed glass reduces light levels in the gallery yet still allows it to retain a connection to the local surroundings.

Turning to artificial light, the halogen spot has been for several years the lighting source of choice. The use of incandescent lighting has to be balanced, as each type of lighting source will bring out different colour saturations in the art that can make it appear quite different when viewed under different sources.

Paul Ruffles, principal, Lighting Design and Technology commented: ‘By careful choice of the lights and their locations, the right lighting level can be achieved on all objects, whilst giving an interesting variation of light in the space and avoiding glare and reflections. Modern white-light LEDs are a great source to use in the museum sector, due to their long-life and lower energy use.’

Another good example where lighting and conservation were vitally important was the illumination of the Asian Gallery in the Victoria & Albert Museum. Designed by Mike Stoane Lighting, spot module luminaires from Xicato were used to producing illumination without compromise in consistent colour appearance, colour rendering, uniformity and reliability.

Clearly, there is a move towards LED as a primary light source. However, there are concerns that LEDs will, over time have an impact on the conservation of an exhibit.

In addition, the colour rendering of LEDs can lean towards the blue end of the colour spectrum, when compared to halogen lamps.

The exhibit being lit generally determines the light source in use. Galleries that are looking for accurate colour rendering will often choose halogens, but high quality LED technology is now offering similar performance.

Indeed, Martin Krautter, at ERCO believes that LEDs and halogens are now interchangeable: ‘Due to its continuous spectrum, halogen is the reference for other lighting sources regarding colour rendering.

But in practice, we experienced that even experts are challenged to tell our LED warmwhite spotlights from halogen spotlights when illuminating even difficult-coloured exhibits. The colour rendering index of our warm white sources is Ra>90. And there is one big advantage of LED against halogen: when dimmed individually to defined lux levels on the exhibits, halogen spotlights experience colour shifts towards the reds, depending on dimming levels. The colour temperature of the LED however, stays the same when dimmed.’

Research currently being carried out by the Getty Conservation Institute into how LED light degrades artwork has yet to fully report, but its interim findings seem to indicate that LEDs don’t seem to be doing any more damage to artworks than traditional halogen lamps.

With a lack of standard, or even metrics to compare, for museums and galleries a trial and error approach is needed, as lamps from different manufacturers can have diverse colour rendering and life expectancy. The use of varied lighting technologies will continue within the museum and gallery sector, certainly for the foreseeable future. LED is certainly making an impact right across the industry, especially as these luminaires evolve to offer more stable light sources that can be measured and compared.

However, what shouldn’t be forgotten is that halogen and incandescent lighting still have their place. The issues of exhibit degredation are well understood for older lighting technologies, but we will have to wait and see the results of the work being carried out by Getty before we know the true impact that LEDs could have on exhibits.

Modern white-light LEDs are a great source to use in the museum sector, due to their long life and lower energy use

Lighting an Old Master Late last year, Philips showcased its LED light initiative within the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

Rembrandt van Rijn’s Night Watch is now being shown for the first time using new lamps that ensure optimal colour rendering, lending an even greater expressive quality to the objects within the painting.

In terms of light quality, the LED solution easily outstrips the

halogen spot lamp offering a warm colour and broad spectrum.

A key element in the partnership between Philips and the Rijksmuseum lies in the intensive exchange of knowledge between the two parties with regard to the development of LED solutions for lighting art and architecture.

Frans van Houten, CEO of Philips said: ‘I’m proud that we

LIVIN’ ON THE EDGE Lighting designer, Bryan Hartley creates a visual extravagance for the latest Aerosmith tour

ryan Hartley has developed an outstanding lighting concept for legendary rock band, Aerosmith’s latest tour.

The creative designer was hired by the band after they saw a lighting and video display he designed for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. After flying to Boston to discuss the design and video content with the band, Hartley reached out to Daddy Van Productions to provide the video content for the tour set up.

‘The lighting concept strives to embody the element of distinguished class with touch visual of extravagance,’ said Chris Galis, PR and production assistant at Daddy Van Productions. Part of the visual LED effects comes from live cameras trained on the band, a standard when working with a huge act. It was important to showcase the visual appeal of the band and not eclipse their performance with a wild LED screen show.

Galis added: ‘Sometimes that’s necessary to bring the band’s live show to the next level, like Motley Crue, but Aerosmith looks and feels like a much more grass roots production. Moving LED screens were used above the band to add extra flair, but not to out-spectacle Stephen Tyler and company while they performed.’

All video was cued through the Catalyst lighting board to ensure the perfect timing of lighting, video and music.

images. Galis said: ‘It was a good way to enhance the visual experience for their fans when they played big stadiums or festivals. It allows people who weren’t as close to the stage to still see detail in the performance.’

Equipment was supplied by PRG. Since there was a large LED screen displaying live video feed of the band, colour schemes were used for much of the actual lighting work. A main consideration of the production was to accent the performers. This was created via using imagery suitable to certain songs. A mix of fire and skewed hospital images were used for various songs.

Due to a busy schedule, the most challenging aspect of the design, was finding the time to sit down with Aerosmith to discuss the designs with the production crew. Hartley overcome the difficulty of designing a product without much input from the band members themselves, relying on what’s best for the songs.

Galis concluded: ‘The lighting design and production was a great success. The band was happy and it was a chance to really challenge ourselves as far as production goes. It’s easy to go big, but with this client there a real challenge to meet the needs of the music perfectly.’

Defaults simplify calculations

Meet LENI ighters now have a new acronym to learn; well two actually because it was the DCLG (The Department for Communities and Local Government) that has just released its expected consultation document on forthcoming changes to Part L of the Building Regulations, which includes the Lighting Energy Numeric Indicator, or LENI. If, like many, your eyes glaze over when people mention LENI, or you’ve never even heard of the term before, here’s a quick update: In order to implement the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPB) directive, the EU Commission needed to establish an official, and credible, methodology for the calculation of energy performance.It thus turned to the European Standards Organisation (CEN), who prepared EN 15193: 2007, which gives a calculation procedure (LENI) for the estimation of the annual lighting energy requirement for a building per square metre (kWh/m2/year).

Sadly, however, the EPB directive is an article 175 document, and thus its implementation procedure can differ across member states. The UK responded, not with LENI, but with Part L of the Building Regulations, prescribing minimum luminaire efficacy parameters (luminaire-lumens per circuit-watt).

Looking to the future Essentially Part L’s role has been to prohibit the use of inefficient luminaires – it doesn’t do much to promote a more

holistic design process rewarded by further energy savings, which is why the SLL, IALD, PLDA and the LIA (OK, perhaps I lied when I said only two acronyms!) campaigned for additional methods to solve their energy needs.

There is a requirement for a systembased measure that can be applied during the lighting design process and used for scheme estimations and comparisons, not one focussed on just products. Taking Part L to the extreme, it allows efficient luminaires to operate in a new building at all hours, being that there is no benefit from using controls. LENI, which measures energy consumed, not installed, is the answer and finally the Government has taken a step in the right direction.

The consultation paper relates to specifying lighting for new and existing non-domestic buildings. It suggests LENI as an alternative to the current calculations, based on specifying minimum levels of luminaire performance (which it proposes, from October 2013, to increase from 55 to 60 luminaire-lumens per circuitwatt). Hopefully, LENI will be the sole consideration in future years.

The proposals also call for the separate metering of the energy used in a building for lighting purposes, and for lighting controls to follow BRE guidance.

Many commentators have expressed concern regarding the formulas used in calculating LENI, suggesting that they are over-complicated and will confuse non-lighting experts, especially installers and users tackling small projects. However, EN 15193 suggests the use of simple default values, which the DLCG has picked up on as the proposal introduces default values for determining, for example, the energy used by a lighting control system (parasitic energy use) and daylight factors. The omission of additional calculations concerning emergency lighting makes the formula even clearer.

Furthermore, lighting energy limits are set out in a handy table according to the required lux level (including provision for display lighting) and hours of operation.

That said, however, LENI will only work if the lighting industry helps participants make the change by publishing the easy-to-use defaults and producing user-friendly worksheets and examples. Such education needs to be extended to lighting controls.

I recall two ex-colleagues, Peter Thorns and Geoff Williams, surveying office lighting in Newcastle one evening.

Aside from highlighting the issue of energy waste (60 per cent of lights were left blazing away at night) they showed that many modern buildings with controls rarely operated to their optimum efficiency, and that there is a continual need to encourage people to switch off lights.

The DCLG has done as asked.

Now it is up to those in the lighting community to respond.
