or anyone who’s struggled to see what they’re working on, the signs of macular degeneration we all experience as we age are as depressing as they are annoying. How often do you notice a colleague peering at their computer screen from mere inches away, or extending an arm, ‘Twizzle-like’ in order to read the letter they’ve received? As we’re constantly reminded, our workforce is ageing, and with pension dates being pushed back to 72 for the next generation of workers, the question of how they’ll manage to see to perform the duties is one that needs addressing – and quickly. But what can be done to help these long-suffering souls perform to their best, without causing further damage to their vision? Well, those clever people at Philips have been researching the problem, and they’ve come up with some startling figures: workers aged 45plus need twice the amount of light as a 20-year-old to complete everyday tasks, and once they reach 60, workers need up to five times the amount of light. So, is it time for the lighting industry to innovate, before we risk our precious eyesight on less-than-ideal lighting conditions? In this issue, we’re exploring ways of ensuring the industry continues to thrive on the LED bow wave, by investing in technology and continually pushing the boundaries of R&D. It’s the big white elephant in the room right now - if LED lamps are going to last 50,000, 75,000 - or even 100,000 hours as I recently saw quoted - what’s the long term future for the replacement lamps market? Granted, there’s still an awful lot of non-LED lamps out there, but now is definitely not the time to rest on our laurels. We’ve also taken a look at a new standard for smart lighting that could integrate domestic technology, and save us from a different app for each piece of equipment - sounds good to me! P

ioneer in innovative aircraft cabin lighting technologies, STG Aerospace has announced that Icelandair has begun upgrading its Boeing 757 fleet with the next generation safTglo photoluminescent, emergency floor p]ath marking system, SuperSeal UltraLite (SSUL). The airline’s 757 fleet are currently equipped with the forerunner, SSL system, but following the granting of EASA approval, it has selected SSUL for the latest four additions to the fleet, and plans to retrofit existing planes later this year during scheduled cabin upgrades. First launched by STG Aerospace in 1995, safTglo is the system of choice for 300 global airlines, and is currently installed on 9,000 aircraft worldwide. SSUL, which incorporates all of the benefits of previous designs, is 70 per cent lighter than the previous version, helping to reduce airline fuel costs even further, and 17 per cent brighter too. It has a one-piece design, with no end caps, meaning that it can be cut to length and sealed during installation, a process that can be carried

out by an airline’s own engineering team. With 300 colour options and a pattern matching service available, safTglo SSUL enables airlines to achieve aesthetically pleasing, coordinated cabin interiors in line with their corporate branding without reducing safety. Icelandair’s Thordur Sigfusson commented: ‘Icelandair has over 13 years’ experience with safTglo, and over the whole of that time the performance of the system has been excellent – high reliability, low maintenance cost, a great look even after 10 years in service, and good product support from STG Aerospace. ‘We had no hesitation in selecting the new SSUL system for the new 757s we were adding to the fleet, and we plan to do the same for two upcoming cabin upgrades. ‘Icelandair is the largest 757 operator in Europe and, based on our experience with STG Aerospace, we would recommend safTglo SSL and SSUL to anyone who is looking for photoluminescent emergency lighting.’

Arup has launched Cities Alive: Rethinking the Shades of Night a report exploring the constantly changing lights of the city, and how they shape our experiences from day to night. The study positions citizens at the heart of night time lighting design to create intelligent environments that adapt and react to enable 24-hour cities. It analyses existing research and trends in urban lighting design, to show how rapidly growing populations, expanding cities, and the emergence of new technologies create opportunities to rethink the design and function of cities at night. Some of the more innovative elements in the report aren’t the new technologies themselves – such as LEDs or OLEDs – but how this smart technology adapts and responds to the changing nightscape. ‘In the past, the attitude of “the more light, the better” has led to a general abundance of light, especially in urban areas, but both light and darkness are equally important to our health and well-being,’ explained Florence Lam, global lighting design leader, Arup. ‘With the shift towards 24-hour cities, we should not aim to simply recreate the day at night, but instead, we need to carefully consider the role of night time lighting. We need to design our cities to change depending on the time of night, and the different usage patterns of the public realm after dark – articulating what we call the different shades of night.’ The report proposes that night time lighting should play a more active role in shaping sustainable cities, that are more enjoyable, more sociable, safer, healthier, and easier to get around. ‘Night time is fundamentally different from daytime,’ added Leni Schwendinger, lighting designer and urbanist at Arup. ‘In many hotter climates, it provides the best conditions for people to use outdoor urban spaces. So it deserves its own design approach, and thinking harder and smarter about street lighting is a vital part of this.’ www.tlmagazine.co.uk • M A Y 2 0 1 5 • 11

F L A S H L I G H T Interphone has launched a range of lighting solutions designed to enable property developers, agents, and FMs to take advantage of LED and induction lighting. The company has created a rental solution that it says will typically match annual costs to savings, meaning lack of capital should no longer be a barrier to adopting the technology. NET LED Lighting is moving to a purpose-built facility in Cambridge. Increasing turnover by 50 per cent per annum, the company has experienced rapid growth, and now requires space for larger stock volume and an expanding team. Staff levels have increased from six to 30 full-time team members at the company, which believes in investing in its staff, and is working with Grant Thornton’s GrowthAccelerator programme, University of Hertfordshire’s Exemplas management training programme, and the Cambridge Marketing College to expand their skillsets. A new association for the lighting design profession has been founded in Frankfurt, which hopes to represent the interests of professional lighting designers in realising the objectives set out in the association’s constitution. Its objectives include a desire to strengthen and further the establishment of the profession; to lobby for recognition of academic qualifications and for protection of title for the professional lighting designer; and to establish a recognised fee schedule. At its recent AGM, Osram CEO, Olaf Berlien took the opportunity to announce the promotion of new technologies and innovations. ‘We will drive new technologies and innovations by using selective incentives and investments. ‘I have dedicated a further 10 million euros from the budget to fund projects like Lightify,’ he told shareholders.

A

pplelec has opened a lighting showroom at the Business Design Centre, providing visitors with the opportunity to see examples of applications where its LED Light Sheet can inspire them in their own designs. Installations include an illuminated lift car, a fully fabricated beauty counter, and a three-metre onyx feature wall. Each piece is a result of collaborations between Applelec and companies such as Evans Turner, IGlass and Grammablend.

The move is being hailed as a significant step for the Bradford-based company, as it focus’ its efforts on increasing a presence in the south. Applelec’s managing director, Ian Drinkwater explains: ‘After significant growth over the past few years, we have found the need to open a space in London where our clients can go to be inspired. It will also be the base for our business development manager, Sandi Moolman, who will be holding meetings and presentations in the unit.’

Our survey says… According to a Europe-wide survey, the UK is one of the top five European countries taking steps to improve energy efficiency with CFL and LED lighting. The survey showed that 88 per cent of UK households purchase CFL bulbs, and many suggested their main reason for doing so is because

of the money saving potential. A third of UK consumers polled have invested in LED light bulbs. The statistics make for great reading, and leading lighting provider. Steven Ellwood, MD of BLT Direct commented on the findings: ‘The new survey is fantastic news for the energy saving

industry in the UK, and great news for all of the consumers who are going to notice a significant fall in their energy bills! Hopefully in the coming years, as halogens are phased out entirely, we’ll see energy-saving options become the default choice for all homes and businesses in the country.’

Appointments Cree has appointed Nina Gouas as regional sales manager for Southwestern Europe. Gouas will be personally involved in the development of commercial activities, building up the distribution network and closely collaborating with established, regional partners. ‘France and the Iberian Peninsula represent two strategic countries for the expansion of Cree’s presence in Europe,’ explained Alessandro Targetti, sales director, Cree Europe. ‘With proven experience and solid business and distribution skills gained over the past

15 years, we are confident that Nina will be a valuable resource for Cree’s success in France and the Iberian Peninsula.’ Gouas has a solid track record in sales management, holding primary commercial roles with direct responsibilities in companies such as Dannon Group, Checkpoint Systems and TCP Lighting. She commented: ‘Cree is the world leader in the LED industry, thanks to its ability to innovate and the high level of performance in the development of best of breed technologies and lighting solutions. I am pleased to be part of a truly innovative company and to contribute to

Cree’s growth in Europe.’ Recolight has appointed a new Chairman, Peter Florack. Florack, senior director at OSRAM AG, has ten years’ industry experience, and replaces David Wyatt of GE Lighting who retired at the end of 2014, having served as Chair for seven years. He has considerable experience of WEEE in a number of other EU countries, and has been on the Recolight board for three years. In addition, Steven Reed of GE Lighting has re-joined the Recolight board after a sevenyear absence. As commercial

operations manager of GE Lighting UK, Reed’s experience and knowledge of the UK lighting industry make him well suited to support Recolight’s board. Announcing the news, Recolight chief executive, Nigel Harvey said: ‘We’re very pleased that Peter Florack has accepted his new role as Chair. ‘Peter joined our board in 2011, and has been integral in our recent developments. Together with Steven Reed, Maurice Loosschilder, and Bridget Anderson, the board has the experience and commitment to support the continued growth of Recolight, and the standards on which our reputation is founded.’

odernism Week is an annual Palm Springs event celebrating the architecture and lifestyle that characterised the area and it’s residents back in the 1950s and ’60s. This coolness was very much on display at a VIP event put on by Land Rover, which featured a stunning fluorescent wireframe replica of a Land Rover, accented with richly saturated coloured light from

a collection of Chauvet’s COLORado 1 Tri-7 Tour and COLORdash Par-Quad 7 LED fixtures. KM Productions, the company behind the lighting and sound for the event, positioned the fixtures 20ft from the wire car, angled 45 degrees off axis from the centerline of the vehicle. ‘The Chauvet fixtures did the job of delivering a lot of punch for the power,’ said Kevin Mignone, president of KM Productions.

Better and better Robe’s latest figures show 2014 was its best trading year to date, and with comprehensive expansion plans for its HQ and production operation in the Czech Republic, it expect the upward trend to continue. The company feels the success is in part due to a planned medium term expansion strategy, and also in response to its BMFL range of moving lights – the first of which was launched in September 2014. Robe has recently completed the acquisition of land and buildings adjacent to its current main factory premises in Valašské Mezi.

Work has recently been completed on a brand new building at the main factory site, to create an enlarged technical centre, meeting, board and conference

rooms, and a staff canteen. CEO Josef Valchar commented: ‘It’s a remarkable achievement to reach 20 years, and I am very proud of the company and the many creative, talented, and dedicated individuals who have worked so hard to help get us to where we are today. Of course, to share our best ever year with that anniversary is just amazing, and it’s a tribute to the great teamwork that is making Robe really rock!’ In addition to record profits, Robe opened two new wholly owned subsidiary operations in 2014 - in the Middle East and Singapore - and another in France in January 2015.

Financing the future Tom Smith, an associate in the industrial sector team at corporate finance advisor, Livingstone Partners, explores current core dynamics in the global lighting market

M

cKinsey research estimated that the global general lighting market was worth €73bn in 2011, and that it will grow at five per cent per annum, through to 2020. An increasing awareness of energy consumption and efficiency amongst consumers, driven by public and political opinion, volatile energy costs, and legislation, has altered the way lighting is delivered, and has had a transformative impact on the lighting industry.

Adapting to changing technologies is crucial A technological shift towards LED and away from incandescent, is altering lighting applications, and shaping the industry and its competitive landscape. This is ultimately creating opportunities for ‘switched-on’ market participants across the value chain. This increased penetration of LED will clearly be the main dynamic in the global lighting market during the next five years. The market share for non-

green, traditional products has been declining rapidly since 2011, both in real and proportional terms. The market share of green traditional products is expected to remain steady, in monetary terms, through 2016, but lose market share to LED products, before falling in both real and proportional terms, through to 2020. The increased adoption of LED lighting products with longer lifespans is forecast to result in the value of the replacement market for lighting being eroded. Research by Memori indicates a reduction in revenues from sales of traditional replacement products, with suppliers in these markets diversifying into LED fixtures and complete lighting solutions, to compensate for the decline. Away from technology, the lighting market is inextricably linked to the construction and refurbishment sector. In the UK, spending that had been postponed during the recession is now a major driver in the sector, with an increased awareness of the aesthetic benefits of lighting design also a positive factor.

www.tlmagazine.co.uk • M A Y 2 0 1 5 • 17

COMMERCIAL

The increased adoption of LED products with longer lifespans is forecast to result in the value of the replacement market for lighting being eroded’

Legislation and costefficiencies accentuate drive towards LED In 2014, LEDs comprised 11 per cent of the global lighting market, an increase from a base of 0.3 per cent in 2010; this growth is expected to continue. Frost & Sullivan research indicates that the LED market is expected to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 31.8 per cent between 2012 and 2017, due to growth in industrial, outdoor, and residential applications. By 2020, it is estimated that LEDs will comprise 61 per cent of the overall global lighting market. The increase in the LED market is driven by both legislation and cost efficiencies. Within the EU, the European Commission aims to phase out all halogen bulbs by 2016 (although this has potentially been delayed until 2018), driving LED adoption. Elsewhere in the world, although usually slightly behind Europe, legislation is heading the same way.

Up-sides and potential pitfalls Those companies, which are early adopters of the new technologies, will

18 • M A Y 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk

initially have an opportunity to realise strong gross margins on innovative products, as strong value-add (perceived or actual) drives product pricing. As the LED market continues to grow, increasing competition and commoditisation in the market, will increase pricing pressure. Any companies wishing to maintain potentially strong margins will need to be willing to invest in R&D, to ensure that their products remain ahead of the curve. For smaller players in the market, the level of investment required may be inhibitive, and consequently they may struggle to compete against larger, better-resourced companies. Maintaining a culture of innovation and a focus on efficient new product development will thus be key. A current hot topic in the lighting market is Philips’ patent licensing program for LED-based luminaires. Philips’ holds approximately 1,000 patents, covering various elements of LED lighting technology, with a fee of up to five per cent of net selling price applying to companies using the patented technology. Many companies are already signed up; however, there is a lag, and those companies not already affected may find

the additional cost an unwelcome drain on margins.

What does this mean for M&A in the sector? As the LED market matures, the growing pace of commoditisation will be a driver of M&A (mergers and acquisitions) activity. As pricing pressure increases, large companies will want to lower cost bases, and realise economies of scope and scale in R&D to remain competitive. M&A is the most obvious method of achieving this. In a commoditised market, small companies may struggle to remain profitable, and therefore be vulnerable to opportunistic approaches from larger competitors looking for market share. It’s certainly not all bad news for smaller companies, however, as it is those companies that are seen as innovative, or have found a demonstrable market niche, they are most likely to deliver a price premium in this kind of environment.

As the health offering continues to creak under the pressure of numbers, TL asks whether LED lighting can play an active role in improving the situation for site owners, staff, and patients alike

Cure for all ills? ‘W

ith the election looming, public spending is under close scrutiny, and hospitals are no exception’, commented Stuart Dixon of EasiLume. ‘LED is a small change that could make a big difference in hospitals - not just to running costs, but also to internal ambiance, and staff productivity. ‘Energy consumption in hospitals is huge,’ he continued, ‘almost twice as much as an office of equivalent size. Lighting is a big cost too, in energy, and maintenance. There are lots of places in hospitals where lighting needs to be left on all the time, so reliability and lifetime performance are key considerations. ‘In fact, LEDs are ideal for hospitals, and the health sector generally. But refitting a ward or a corridor and switching to LEDs without thinking through the switch can be very disruptive. Retrofit solutions for hospitals, such as LED panels, should be designed for ease

of installation, allowing a hassle-free and cost effective switch.’ But LED lighting isn’t just a quick fix to cut running costs. It dramatically improves the comfort and ambience of the space. Given that some patients will be spending periods of time under always-on lighting, potentially for days at a time, improvements to their comfort and mood can contribute significantly to their health and wellbeing. ‘Fluorescent lights, a common alternative, are harsh and proven to cause migraines, headaches, eyestrain, lethargy, irritability, and poor concentration,’ believes Dixon. ‘And it isn’t just patients that are affected. Staff also benefit from more comfortable, productivity enhancing LED’.

Where private meets NHS Well-designed lighting, using suitable fittings, is at the heart of any good lighting project, and that’s true for the health sector too. At Basingstoke Hospital’s new LINAC centre, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wanted to bring as much natural light as possible to the building interior. The brief insisted on both the NHS and private areas following a similar design concept, although with a smaller budget for the NHS departments, so Paul Murphy Architects specified Artemide’s fittings to fulfil the role. The lighting was chosen to ensure the private hospital looked as little like a medical facility as possible, but of course, the architect had to ensure it functioned C O N TA C T

for staff and could be easily cleaned and maintained. The impressive entrance area features a cluster of 33 Castore suspended fittings of different sizes, and in the inner hallway, the company’s Solar Fluo has been selected specifically to provide ambience. The siting of the Castore fittings in the entrance was seen as key to the project; the idea was to create a floating effect with the Castore fittings used in different sizes and at different heights. Outside, the architect continued the theme with Ego recessed uplighters and Ciclope outdoor bollards, both from Artemide.

All about the colour Much research has been undertaken into the colour temperatures of lighting, and its benefits to health and wellbeing. Ajay Vasdev at Asco Lights has studied the results of working with tuneable light. He explained: ‘200 years ago, 75 per cent of the population worked outdoors, whereas now, less than 10 per cent work in natural light. So the question is; does artificial light give us the same benefits as natural light would? ‘Statistics have shown a link between certain diseases, such as breast and prostate cancers, to those who work shifts. Nowadays, one in three people work shifts, and these workers’ lack of natural daylight could potentially be a contributing factor. ‘With these harsh statistics, it is imperative that we improve the light around us, at our workplaces, in our homes, and in public places including hospitals, healthcare centres, and care homes. ‘Lighting can affect our mood and how comfortable we feel within a space. Several research studies have been carried out, looking into this area to help come up with specialist lighting systems that are made to be compatible with our circadian rhythm. ‘In a hospital or care home environment, both staff and patients

22 • M A Y 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk

spend a lot of time inside. It is important for patients to feel comfortable and relaxed, to aid recovery. Yet commercial spaces tend to have harsh lighting, making it less homely. With the use of clever lighting, the arrangement and selection of lights can make a space feel more relaxing. Colour temperature can have a positive affect on patients’ wellbeing, and how they feel within the space. ‘Lighting affects staff performance and wellbeing too. Doctors at Harvard University found that the colour of light can affect us in different ways depending on the time of day. They found that blue wavelengths are beneficial during daylight hours, because they boost attention, reaction times, and mood, however they seem to be the most disruptive at night. The blue light was also shown to suppress melatonin for twice as long as green light.

C O N TA C T

Asco Lights www.ascolights.co.uk

‘Using this research, scientists and designers have been working towards the perfect light source for interior space. The problem with our existing artificial light sources is that they are usually fixed in spectral output, while the proportion of wavelengths - and therefore colour temperature - of the light we receive from the sun, changes throughout the day, as well as throughout the year. Despite this problem, there are now some lighting products that can create a light, which is similar to that of the sun. ‘Known as colour changeable LEDs, their light colour can be altered from 2700k to 6500k, giving us a more natural light designed for healthy living,’ continued Vasdev. ‘Being colour tuneable, the colour temperature can be altered to suit. This circadian solution has been tried and tested in schools and medical facilities to prove it promotes healthier living.’

And the lux And it’s not just colour temperatures that could improve wellbeing; Philips has recently called for a rethink on lux levels for staff, which it believes are currently only suitable for the youngest workers. Philips’ research suggests that today, 30-50 per cent of workers are in the 45plus age bracket, and by that age, the standard requirement of 50 lux is insufficient. ‘People often call in sick due to headaches and fatigue,’ explained Dr Bianca van der Zande, principle scientist at Philips. ‘These symptoms may have many underlying causes, but perhaps one of these could be the result of prolonged eye-strain due to poor lighting conditions in their working lives. Inadequate lighting can lead to visual discomfort, neck pain, headaches, fatigue, and perhaps eventually, sick leave, she added’. In 2013, Philips tested a desk lamp that allowed users to adjust its light intensity and colour temperature according to personal preference. Some 90 per cent reported sharper vision, optimum eye comfort, the ability to see smaller details, and improved contrast. That ability to adjust individual workplace lighting conditions according to personal

preferences has been associated with better mood, improved lighting quality ratings, and environmental satisfaction. Because individual preferences vary widely, individual control is the only practical means to ensure that people have a good chance to obtain light that is best suited to them. ‘Regulatory bodies should take these findings into account for the wellbeing and productivity of today’s workforce,’ says Dr van der Zande. ‘People spend 80-90 per cent of their time indoors, so the indoor environment determines, to a large extent, the comfort and wellbeing of the employee, influencing their performance. It is important that humancentric lighting becomes a part of the regulatory standards, allowing architects and building designers to advise

for the best solutions for all building environments.’

Small bills, big benefits By changing to LED light sources, many healthcare centres will be able to address both staff and patient welfare concerns. As part of its carbon reduction programme, Spire Healthcare recently evaluated the benefits of LED lighting in a pilot project at Leicester Hospital, which demonstrated energy savings of almost 70 per cent, improved light distribution, and greater hygiene. ‘The measurement of lighting energy consumption before and after the upgrade indicates an average energy saving across all of the circuits that were monitored of around 69 per cent,’ Spires’ Nigel Sharp observed. ‘As well as www.tlmagazine.co.uk • M A Y 2 0 1 5 • 23

And it isn’t just patients that are affected. Staff also benefit from more comfortable, productivity enhancing LED’ these benefits, there has been a massive improvement in both the quality of the lighting, and the aesthetic appearance of the space. ‘As a result of this successful pilot, there is now a broad agreement that we will roll out LED lighting across all of our existing hospitals. It is also our intention that the two new hospitals being constructed will have all-LED lighting.’

Where old meets new The Ospedali Riuniti Umberto I of Ancona, Italy is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the area, and has 726 beds, 18 operating theatres, and 2,100 employees, including 12 university professors. The hospital began the installation of a full energy management system in July 2013. Lead by Gruppo Loccioni, a local high-tech company focused on designing turnkey tailor-made solutions, the project included a smart lighting system. For the lighting element of the project,

Cree www.cree.com

Gruppo Loccioni selected Cree highefficiency LED fixtures and Schneider Electric’s automation solutions and hardware. ‘The project was very ambitious,’ said Davide Nardi Cesarini, engineer and technical project manager at Gruppo Loccioni. ‘We considered LED lighting as the best choice for this project, due to its superior efficiency and ability to support advanced management strategies without compromising the lifecycle of the lamps, as in the case of fluorescent lamps. ‘We preferred Cree’s lighting solutions because they offer a leading warranty in terms of performance and longevity, as well as DALI protocol dimming support.’ The project focused on three departments: oncology, haematology and laboratory analysis, where obsolete fluorescent lamps were replaced with Cree LE12 and CR22 LED architectural troffers, featuring light and presence sensors. The installed system monitored energy savings of more than 70 per cent due to the increased efficiency of the LEDs, and their ability to adjust light intensity and occupancy control. Featuring Cree’s TrueWhite technology, the fixtures feature colour temperatures of 4000K, and that, with the modern design of the fixtures helps create a better environment for staff, patients, and visitors.

OPINION

Imagine an office where employees could manipulate the nature of directional LED lighting above their desks’

Clever clogs Jack Cooper of NET LED Lighting believes smart lighting for convenience, comfort, and energy efficiency is more than just a pipe dream

I

sn’t it irritating to discover you’ve just run out of milk when you’re preparing a cup of tea? Wouldn’t it be nice if the office fridge knew when you were running low on essentials? Imagine the possibilities: a notification in your inbox giving you an automatically updating shopping list, based on what you need. How about a subscription service offered by a supermarket, that had them delivering milk before you even knew you were running low? Fifteen years ago, this concept would have seemed far-fetched; a pipe dream of incredible demand measurement for businesses, and an ultimate luxury for the consumer. However, this is no longer the case, as such concepts become reality thanks to the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the future of digitally controllable devices. Promising to expand on the opportunities already presented by automation and remote control, the IoT is the interconnection of devices uniquely labelled by IP addresses. This highly advanced method of connectivity will see how we control the things that influence the way we live our lives, change in a way that will vastly improve convenience, comfort, and energy efficiency. Imagine microwave sensor lights being the first part of a chain of events C O N TA C T

that were triggered with the approach of a customer, patient, patron or employee. As they move along a corridor, the lights gradually brighten and dim as they pass. The air conditioning automatically starts at a preferred temperature, and the coffee machine warms the pot as you approach the staff room. There are very few limits to how this emerging technology could be used. Interaction with computers thus far has been mostly human-centric, with little input from computers themselves. The IoT will give computers ‘senses’, and the ability to implement environmental changes to benefit how people go about their daily lives. ‘Sensing’ smart devices will be able to trigger certain functions and effects, based on environmental conditions like light output, temperature, and humidity, by sharing data collected by probes and sensors and fed to each other over short-range wireless networks. So how can this wealth of connectivity and ‘talking’ machines benefit commercial applications? The data collected by these intelligent devices could be hugely beneficial in increasing productivity and energy efficiency, and also in improving marketing and product R&D. Automated production, import, and export, based on individual customer demand is a very real possibility for the future. NET LED Lighting is working on ways

to implement this smart machine-tomachine technology into contemporary lighting control solutions for commercial environments. For example, as open plan offices continue to divide opinion, why not give staff more autonomy over their workspace? Imagine an office where employees could manipulate the nature of directional LED lighting above their desks, using smartphones and tablets, making the space their own without affecting the productivity of others. LED technology has already introduced the possibility of intelligent, reactive lighting design. The level of control we have over our lighting has increased over the years, with IP-addressable lighting slowly becoming more prominent in high-end applications. We want to improve the accessibility of smart lighting, by making the technology available and affordable to every commercial application. The Internet of Things is exciting technology, offering real potential to transform the way we live and work. To some, it may seem futuristic and even intrusive, but the technology is proven and available today. In the same way as carrying a phone around in your pocket once seemed futuristic and even intrusive, the Internet of Things will soon become ubiquitous, and we can’t wait to play our part in making business smarter.

Those working in the lighting industry have an important part to play in the roll out of ESOS recommendations’

Colin Lawson, Tamlite

Low-hanging

FRUIT Tamlite’s head of sales, marketing and product development, Colin Lawson feels it’s time for lighting to take centre stage under the new ESOS regulations

N

ew legislation means organisations have to confront their energy consumption, and lighting will be the low-hanging fruit that means businesses embrace, rather than merely tolerate, the rules. The Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) came into force in July 2014, and requires, for the first time, that all organisations (loosely defined as a company with more than 250 employees) face their energy consumption, head on. The regulations dictate that all eligible companies must complete a thorough energy audit by December 5, 2015, highlighting consumption figures and identifying ways to save energy and, ultimately, money. The scheme presents a significant opportunity for businesses to streamline

operations, increase their competitiveness, and boost the bottom line - although there is no obligation for them to implement any recommendations. There’s always the risk that organisations will see the endeavour as an exercise in ‘tick box compliance’.

Low hanging fruit However, it’s very likely that, once confronted with stark evidence of the potential savings to be had (UK businesses stand to save up to £1.6bn), many companies will, at the very least, explore some of the easier energy efficiency wins, and lighting is the obvious low-hanging fruit in this area. Indeed, with up to 40 per cent of a building’s electricity use accounted for by lighting1, it’s no surprise that official ESOS guidance lists standard lighting measures among its energy-saving recommendations. The inclusion of suggestions such as LED lighting, occupancy sensors, daylight sensors, maintenance plans, and basic employee engagement, suggests that the Government still believes that much of the low-hanging fruit of energy-saving remains unpicked, and that it sees ESOS as a chance to push more companies into implementing these fundamental measures.

Industry-wide benefits Those working in the lighting industry, then, have an important part to play in the

roll out of ESOS recommendations. Lighting designers, specifiers, and consultants can use this opportunity to boost their own position, by being aware of the guidance and its requirements, and understanding exactly how their customers may wish to adopt technologies, that will help save them the money identified by their ESOS audits. Taking energy-saving needs into account provides clients with a better value product, which is good news for lighting companies’ customer satisfaction levels and business competitiveness. Everyone stands to benefit.

Communicating choice Of course, while swapping out-dated lighting for new, low-energy lighting is a no-brainer for many, the technology in this arena has changed dramatically and quickly in recent years. What were once specialist solutions are now the mainstream options, available to a wider range of organisations at more affordable prices. Many companies will remain unaware of this, so it’s important that those in the lighting business communicate the choices now available, to ensure that the industry moves forward in a sustainable, environmentally conscious direction. The term ‘low-hanging fruit’ is bandied around a great deal these days, but if ESOS regulation indicates anything, it’s that there’s still a sizeable market for these energy-saving measures, and the lighting industry is well positioned to benefit, just as much as the companies undertaking the audits. ‘this showroom provides the ideal space to bring customers to show them our offering in all its glory’’

Showroom style A London furniture showroom gets a bespoke lighting solution

W

hen Forma 5 decided to update its showroom in Old Street, London, a number of showpiece luminaires from Spectral Lighting’s extensive offering were specified, creating an enticing and visually appealing space, and importantly, highlighting Forma 5’s furniture. The Spanish company has been producing high quality office furniture and chairs for more than thirty years. With a strong commitment to innovation, Forma 5 offers bespoke solutions as well as standard, corporate furniture. ‘The quality of light produced from the Spectral fittings is outstanding,’ enthused Stuart Young, UK sales manager at Forma 5. ‘It is a contrast to the previous arrangement.’

Cool, calm surroundings On the ground floor, the crisp, white tables and chairs are complemented with cool white light from Spectral’s combined LED luminaire and acoustic panel, BLADE. In addition, the popular JEP fittings have been used to illuminate the desks and entrance space. Tucked away

at the back of the room is the intriguing SINUS luminaire. Each fitting blends seamlessly into the black ceilings, assisted by the clever use of clear cabling. One of the highlights on the ground floor is the STORA-LK pendant, which features continuous direct lighting, made possible by the latest LED technology. Performance and detail are inherent; for example, the drop suspension wires integrate the power cabling, so there is no snaking cable dropping from the ceiling, further enhancing the clean lines.

Integrated control The basement showcases the warmer toned furniture solutions, which are mirrored by warm lighting tones. The space is lit by PERGAMENT luminaires, which help to create a relaxed, comfortable environment. The holographic nature of the new PREGAMENT LED is intriguing; the diffuse light puts a small amount of light back onto the ceiling, creating a jewellike appearance. What makes this installation all the

more special is that the fittings are integrated onto a DALI track, and can be controlled via Casambi’s smartphone and tablet user-interface software. This allows users to set different scenes and dim the lighting as required. ‘Having a London base is a great step forward for Spectral, and this showroom provides the ideal space to bring customers to show them our offering in all its glory,’ explained Jon Estell, UK head of design at Spectral Lighting. ‘I am impressed with what we have achieved here, using the pre-existing track, and clients love being able to try out the control element for themselves.’ Forma 5’s Stuart Young added: ‘Spectral’s design and quality ethos mirrors our own vision, and I look forward to continuing the partnership for many years to come.’ C O N TA C T

May we help? May Design Series 2015: shining a light on new inspiration

R

eturning to London for the third year running is May Design Series, guided in 2015 by the mantra ‘Curated for Business’, in response to extensive research into the needs of retail, residential, commercial, and hospitality design communities. Promising to be the biggest yet with 500 of the best international and British brands, the show runs from 17-19 May at ExCeL London, and presents an array of products for every interior space across five sectors: lighting, furniture, kitchens and bathrooms, decor and DX - the pavilion showcasing products that use new materials and technology. For 2015, the lighting galleries will prove to be a must see high point. Suzie Ager, brand director for May Design Series, elaborates: ‘I’m really thrilled about the lighting area this year, as the imaginative designs will definitely create an inspiring experience for our visitors. ‘The entrance tunnel will be fuelled by Disco Disco, an illuminated sound-responsive installation by creative entrepreneurs, Alex Asseily and

Goodwin Hartshorn from Haberdashery (stand L232).’ She continues; ‘A collection of new, handselected innovators will complete the ‘Artisans of Light’ zone, located alongside a raft of international companies and a central bar hub. The vibe will be exceptional - there certainly is much to get excited about!’

Make a beeline for... Based in Bath, lighting design studio, Felix Lighting (stand L174) has one of the UK’s most extensive collections of original industrial lights. In addition, the team designs and produces its own range of exclusive pieces, such as hand moulded leather desk lamps, and bone china pendants. Bespoke designs crafted for Jamie’s Italian and Soho House confirm the workshop’s imagination and skill. First-time exhibitor, TMO Lighting (stand AL16) is the creative brainchild of artist, Helena Barrowcliff, who designs, paints, and screen prints

lampshades, pairing them with handmade bases to form exquisite fixtures made according to each customer’s requirements. Barrowcliff will be launching two new screen prints at May Design Series, the first of which is made using materials sourced entirely from Dorset, and depicting patterns printed on brown paper to replicate Polynesian tapa cloth. The shades have been designed to look good during the day and even better at night, as their colour transforms in contrast with the darkness. She has also sourced beautiful, smoky-grey and brown glass bottles, primarily from Italy, and hand-turned oak stoppers that are being used in her new collections. An exclusive distributor for a number of high quality Italian lighting companies, Clifton Lighting (stand L110) harnesses a vast working knowledge of the European market, and continually sources new companies, to ensure its growth year-on-year. The company aims to bring carefully picked, bespoke, high quality products to the UK, with an emphasis on European design. Chad Lighting, distributed by Swaffer (stand FAB6), designs and manufactures contemporary luminaries for use in leisure, corporate, and domestic environments. Employing a wide range of high quality materials, Chad produces bespoke items for specific projects, and works with local craftsmen and component suppliers to maintain high quality and dependability of supply. EVENT

All the fun of the fair There’s still time to plan a visit to Dubai for Index 2015

T

his month, Dubai extends a very warm welcome to the 25th INDEX trade fair. As well as the latest in lighting design and technology, the show will cover a variety of sectors, from furniture and kitchen and bathroom design, to retail, textiles, and outdoor living – and all under one roof. In 2014, the show attracted 21,000 visitors from 101 countries, who were spoilt for choice with 725 exhibitors and 23 international pavilions. With construction projects in the region valued at a cool $128bn, (an increase of 93 per cent in just one year) interest from visitors and exhibitors in the area has never been higher, meaning the show is set to grow at a similar rate. Most areas of the lighting industry will be represented, with specific sectors for architectural, decorative, LED, and urban lighting, as well as the latest technical developments and solutions for interior and exterior use. There will even be one or two hardy Brits exhibiting, who’ll be glad to see you, so look out for Endon and Elstead’s stands. According to the organiser, a staggering 58 per cent of visitors to INDEX are there in order to source lighting products – with 45 per cent buying as a result, so this definitely isn’t an interiors exhibition with a couple of lighting exhibitors to make up the numbers. Neel Shukla, MD of Four Seasons/ Troy Lighting exhibited in 2014, and commented after the event: ‘This year has been quite phenomenal; we have people who want to buy in retail capacity, but mostly projects. ‘Our goal here was to meet new clients and expand our portfolio to the existing

database that we have, and we have had a tremendous response. INDEX is a show that evolves on an ongoing basis, and we have always maintained our presence over here, which is very important. The show has exceeded our expectations every single year we have been here. This particular year, the show has been fabulous, and we have struck some good deals, which will be prospective for us.’ His enthusiasm was matched by Massimo Soffiato, owner of Italian company, BebyGroup, who said: ‘We have had great success in this market in Dubai. Everything is produced in Italy, with 98 per cent exported, which INDEX helps us with, as we can reach the right audience in one place.’

World-class facilities The Dubai World Trade Centre is a stateof-the-art venue, located in the city’s bustling business district, just a 15-minute drive from Dubai International Airport. For those arriving by public transport, the DWTC metro station adjoins the venue, so getting there really couldn’t be easier. If you’re planning to stay a few days, onsite accommodation is available at either the Ibis, the Novotel or at the Centre’s hotel apartments. For those staying in Dubai, the majority of local hotels offer a shuttle service, and if you’re an independent spirit, the city’s public transport system is one of the best and most economical in the world.

What’s going on? The event will include a number of feature installations, including Design Talks, Trend Tour, Student Design Challenge, Fresh, Product Design awards, and the Design Buyers Club. One of the most innovative is Design

Talks: the organisers invite industry professionals to share their knowledge and expertise on a variety of topics including, lighting trends, sustainability and eco-friendly design, building technologies, as well as regional case studies in the hospitality, retail, commercial, education, healthcare, and workplace arenas. The Product Design Awards judging panel has just been announced; it includes Nadine Bitar, director of Placemaking; Annamaria Lambri, interior design Professor at the American University, Dubai; and Four Frontiers’ retail area manager, Rob Canning. The Student Design Challenge is an annual design competition hosted by ISG and Tasmena, which features as one of the highlights of INDEX. It presents young designers with a chance to connect and learn through collaborative, interdisciplinary activity, while at the same time adding to their personal portfolio and showcasing themselves at an international venue. The theme for 2015 is ‘Building on Tradition’. Along similar lines and intended to showcase upcoming talent, Fresh is a platform for UAE-based students and graduates to exhibit their work to an international audience. Finally, the Design Buyer’s Club is an exclusive invite-only club for the MENA region’s leading design professionals who directly influence the purchasing of products and services for high-value design and architectural projects. Running alongside INDEX, the programme provides its members with exclusive benefits aiming at facilitating relationship building, and providing customised assistance and VIP services during the exhibitions.

Can we use lighting to assist rail travellers?

C

reating a comfortable environment and helping travellers complete their journeys in the most stress free way possible has become an integral part of the lighting designer’s remit when lighting upgrades loom. Previously undertaken specifically to reduce energy consumption and associated running and maintenance costs, the operators of many of the UK’s railway networks are now demanding that their customers receive due consideration too. After all, nobody wants their staff to deal with stressed-out commuters who miss connections because the badly positioned lighting was shining directly onto the information boards, making them totally unreadable from certain parts of the concourse (it really happened to a colleague of mine, but generosity of spirit, and a wish to continue to travel won’t allow me to name names).

Design for the future When Network Rail wanted to rejuvenate Kings Cross Southern Square, it took the unusual step of launching a competition to find the most suitable design. Working with architect, Stanton Williams, studioFRACTAL was commissioned to design the lighting. With a daily footfall of 140,000 to contend with, the complex and challenging project included the removal of existing retail units, relocation of transport services, as well as the accommodation of underground vents and other building structures. A highly sustainable, all LED lighting scheme was devised by studioFRACTAL, whose strategy of integrating lighting into numerous building elements provided the required balance between functional and accent lighting. This approach allowed the design team to create discrete lighting details into furniture and structural elements, producing definition of the forms at night. Bespoke stainless steel columns provide the ambient lighting, and are carefully designed and positioned to afford maximum views of the historic Cubitt façade – which forms the focal point. acdc worked with studioFRACTAL to realise the design for the historic architecture. Light from iglu in-ground luminaires grazes upwards from the ground floor of the building to reveal the brickwork, connecting the façade to the ground plane at night. Further up the façade, the company’s integrex surface mounted luminaires are employed to subtly and gradually wash light up the façade, fading out as the light travels upward.

Keeping everyone happy Chris Sutherland, of studioFRACTAL explains further: ‘As well as highlighting the broad expanse of the façade, we also wanted to gently pick out the small niches and cornices with the same lighting effect, so that the horizontal surfaces would be illuminated as well, adding interest and drawing the eye towards the façade itself. ‘The product we used needed to be available in a range of lengths to suit the variation in space available. Being listed meant

We also wanted to gently pick out the small niches and cornices with the same lighting effect, so that the horizontal surfaces would be illuminated’ that luminaire fixings had to be located in existing mortar lines to ensure no damage was done to the façade – and this all had to be approved by Camden Conservation office and English Heritage.’ The integrex high power linear luminaire proved to be the right choice, offering the power to wash up to 10 metres, together with a fully integrated dimmable DMX driver for optimum control possibilities to tune the lit effect. The slim (53mm) profile ensured a discreet presence on the façade too. Sutherland added: ‘The Integrex optics allowed us to achieve the even and gradual wash of light onto the façade, we wanted. We selected 3000K warm white LEDs to reflect the warm tone and bring out the texture within the brickwork. acdc’s dual binning process gave us the confidence to be sure that all products would be colour consistent, right across the façade.’

Not every project has quite so many demanding and competing interests, but however straightforward it appears, there is always the potential for problems when dealing with heritage sites. A successful and innovative lighting system at one of the UK’s bestknown railway heritage sites is pushing Northern Rail’s pioneering approach to sustainability into the limelight. With such a large and varied network, Northern Rail (Northern) has been smart in how it drives innovation for its customers, while taking its commitment to tackling climate change seriously. A scheme to reduce the company’s carbon footprint, and one which has earmarked its progressive approach to sustainability is the new energy efficient lighting system installed at Rainhill, a station steeped in history and possibly not the most obvious choice for energy efficient technology to be installed. Northern’s Euan Hilton explains why Rainhill was chosen: ‘Some lighting at the station had previously been damaged by vandals, and feedback from colleagues was that the current lighting was not illuminating some areas of the station sufficiently. ‘Although it might have been deemed a challenge, we wanted to install LED lighting at Rainhill to show that new technology could be fitted in a building of historic interest, running new beside old

RETAIL

without detriment to the structure itself. ‘LEDs can be easily dimmed and switched on and off via sensors, which again allows us to gain further energy savings. This additional control also allows us to minimise light pollution where required, and of course, wastage. ‘We chose Rainhill as it meant we could see how the new technology ran alongside an older building, as many newer stations already have modern lighting installed. ‘Thankfully, during the Co-op Energy Conference, myself and a colleague were introduced to Dexeco Solutions - a company already approved by Network Rail - and discussions started from there. Dexeco was able to offer the most suitable equipment needed to solve the lighting issues at Rainhill, and the additional inbuilt individual controls really gave them an edge over the competitors.’

Perfect partners Dexeco matched existing light fittings with LED replacements to ensure that infrastructure, such as columns and wiring, didn’t need modification, ensuring the installation was as straightforward as possible. Integral sensors in the LED fittings meant the control aspect of the lights could be introduced without the added time and expense of installing BUS wiring or BMS controls too. As with any project where the station environment is being changed or modified, there were challenges to overcome. The biggest task was to insure this installation of new technology into a heritage building didn’t cause any detrimental effects to either the building’s structure or its traditional charm. Energising the individual dimming controls on the external lights was also something the project team wanted to monitor closely, as the custom settings would be influenced by the natural effects of daylight. ‘We worked closely

throughout the project with our employees at Rainhill, and kept local managers up to speed as we progressed,’ explained Hilton. ‘Right up to energisation of the dimming of the external lights, we consulted the business and garnered strong support for the project.’ Four Dexeco products were used on the installation to reflect the four different areas of the stations, which required improved lighting. Each area came with its own specification and requirements, which reflected its use by customers and employees.

Win-win ‘Since installation, from August to November, we have been monitoring energy levels closely at Rainhill,’ he added. ‘Since we activated the motion sensors on the lighting, we’ve seen a 56 per cent reduction in energy usage for the whole station, which is a fantastic result. ‘Other than the reduced power consumption of the LED source, the sensors ensure that the lights are only ever operated at full output when passengers or trains are present. This, in turn, ensures that the majority of the time, energy consumption is minimal and unoccupied areas are only lit to a minimum level for safety and security reasons.’ Northern has received positive feedback on the changes, not only from its own employees, but also from customers who use the station regularly. ‘Customers have already remarked how the station looks and feels so much brighter, and that the waiting room is more pleasant to sit in. Most importantly, they are pleased to see we’ve been investing in their station,’ enthused Hilton. ‘Our people have also noticed a big change, and were surprised how something such as lighting could change their working environment for the better. We’re now looking at how we can take these energy savings forward in the business to reflect on our overall sustainability targets by looking at other locations on the Northern network.’

H

oliday cruise company, Costa Cruises has completed a lighting upgrade of 10 of its ships, which now feature more than 300,000 Philips LED lights. The upgrade will enable a 60 per cent reduction in the energy used to power each ship’s lighting. With electricity aboard ship exclusively powered by diesel motors, this lighting renovation, across 10 ships, will provide annual CO2 emission savings of 30,000 tonnes. The switch to energy efficient LED technology is the latest step towards Costa Cruises’ goal to slash its CO2 emissions according to targets it set out in its Sustainability Report published in 2014. Stefania Lallai, Costa Cruises sustainability director, explained: ‘This initiative between two companies engaged in providing solutions for the mitigation of the impact on the environment, represents another step forward by Costa Cruises in the field of sustainability. ‘The lighting project with

Philips is an important initiative undertaken to lower the CO2 impact generated by our fleet, and to reduce energy consumption on board.’ Philips’ MasterLED spots and CoreProLED tubes installed on the cruise ships emit high quality white light designed not to irritate or tire the eyes. It provides a bright, warm and inviting atmosphere for passengers too. After completing the relamping of all 10 ships, Philips is now involved in renovations of Costa Cruises’ headquarters in Genoa, Italy with LED lighting. ‘Travel by sea already has the lowest carbon footprint compared to other forms of transport in the wider tourism industry,’ said Nicola Kimm, head of sustainability for Philips Lighting. ‘Think of cruise ships as self-contained mini floating cities, powered by their own energy supply. Switching from 50W bulbs to 7W LED technology increases energy efficiency by more than 60 per cent, halving each ship’s electricity consumption required for lighting.’

The dawn of the era of the LED hasn’t been without its birth pains’

Teething troubles Sam Woodward, Lutron’s customer education leader for Europe and Africa, looks at considerations for LED dimming

A

few years ago, there was much discussion around whether LED could become a viable light source, and whether it would break through into widespread adoption as the primary means of illuminating buildings. Remember those days? Well, it’s now very clear that not only is LED viable; it’s going to be the dominant light source for the next era of lighting. LED retro-fit versions of most lamp types are now abundantly available, albeit with a wide spectrum of quality, and LEDs are enabling lighting fixtures to be created in ever more interesting shapes and sizes. However, the dawn of the era of the LED hasn’t been without its birth pains.

The variability of LED lamps has led to many installers experiencing problems with flicker, and a variety of other performance issues. LED lamps may not dim up and down evenly, may present poor performance at the low end, or may not be dimmable at all. Now, more than ever, both the manufacturers of LED-based products and the manufacturers of lighting controls, have a responsibility to educate the market, in order to restore confidence in the controllability of LED. Problems, such as flicker, premature lamp failure, or bad dimming performance are commonplace and, sadly, often detract from the crucial role of LEDs in advancing our industry.

We must not ignore what has come before: it will be with us for many years to come’

However the reality is that all LEDs are dimmable, it’s just that not all LED-systems are dimmable. What do I mean by that? We must consider the combination of parts that make up an LED system as a whole: the LED components themselves are only part of the story. The system also includes the driver, the thermal management, and optics (although we’ll ignore these in the context of this article), and the control/dimming system. Once they are electrically connected, the various parts cannot be considered in isolation. The performance of the system is the performance of all parts together, and the limitations of the system will be the limitations of the worst performing part of that system. All LED components are dimmable, but the performance of the system as a whole, is determined by the capability of the driver in being dimmed, and the compatibility of that driver with the output signal from the controls to which it’s connected. www.tlmagazine.co.uk • M A Y 2 0 1 5 • 67

SPECIALIST

The location of the driver circuit itself may not be immediately obvious. For example, in the case of LED retrofit lamps, it’s hidden: built into the lamp housing itself, but (in almost all cases) its in there, and doing a very important job. If this tiny driver circuit is of low quality, then the whole system will fail to perform adequately. With a retrofit lamp, the dimming control is solely via the chopping of the mains sine-wave, slicing the incoming power 100 times per second, and so the driver must be able to cope with this input without flicker (for the purpose of this article, I’m ignoring ‘WiFi lamps’. More on them another time, as they bring their own challenges!). Of course, LED retrofit lamp manufacturers are under considerable pressure to reduce the cost of the lamps, and one area of cost saving is the tiny driver circuit board. The result in the market is a very wide variety of lamps, and therefore rigorous testing is essential. In doing compatibility and performance tests it must be remembered that the number of lamps now matters more than ever before, and there is no guarantee that a circuit with, for example, three lamps, will behave on a dimmer in the same way as a circuit with six lamps. Specifically, much angst is experienced where older dimmers, previously successfully connected to incandescent loads, are required to dim LED lamps. The reality here is that many LED replacements simply do not act, electrically, in the same way as a hot wire, resistive, incandescent lamp did. However, that’s part of the point of making the switch to a new light source: we want to use new loads, which are significantly more efficient than those, which came before! Amongst other issues, dimmers that were not designed for LED loads, may require a minimum load that is less than the newer, more efficient, lamps draw. Whereas a 40W minimum for incandescent gave a reasonably low light output, 40W of LED is considerable. Likewise, in-line dimmers, which get their power by acting in-series

68 • M A Y 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk

and ‘stealing’ power through an incandescent load, without requiring a mains-neutral connection, will often not allow an LED load, with a much smaller total power rating, to switch off. These problems can be solved by recognising that an installation - ie. dimmer plus loads needs to be considered as a whole, rather than expecting any dimmer to work with any LED load. In replacing the load it is likely that the dimmer will need updating too. The good news is that there is a new generation of dimmer designs, which do not have minimum load issues, which are designed for compatibility with well made LED lamps, and which give wonderfully smooth performance throughout the visible dimming range. At the moment there are no universal standards for lamp dimmability, but the good news is that there are standards in development. In the meantime, testing of combinations of loads and dimmers is essential (for an example see www.lutron.com/ ledtool, where 1000-plus lamps have been tested in combination with various dimmers). Another challenge in dimming LED lamps is inrush: both at the initial point of switching and, if leading edge mains dimming is being used, on every half-cycle of the mains (i.e. every 1/100th of a second). Inrush problems when switching on a load can be removed by using SoftSwitch technology (where the switching is guaranteed to occur at the zero crossing point in the mains cycle), and dimmer de-rating is then advised when calculating the maximum LED load per circuit. At this point, looking at alternatives such as low voltage controlled fixtures, which take a fixed mains supply and have their dimming controlled by a low voltage signal, become an option offering better performance. The alternative to retrofit LED lamps are whole lighting fixtures containing LED light engines. Again the driver - or electronic control gear - element is crucial here, but it is more often the case that a larger, separate, driver is used when the confines of fitting into a traditional

That’s part of the point of making the switch to a new light source: we want to use new loads, which are significantly more efficient than those, which came before!’

lamp shape are removed. Very often this driver takes a fixed mains supply, rather than a dimmed one, and instead uses a low voltage protocol to instruct the electronics how much power to deliver to the load. As the power to the driver isn’t being chopped up, the overall stability of this method is much better. Low-end performance is again determined by the driver’s design, but there are now many models of driver, which can dim perfectly smoothly down to one per cent levels. Control can then be achieved using 0-10V, DALI, EcoSystem, or other protocols designed to allow control systems to communicate with driver electronics. As we enjoy the many benefits of this new era in lighting, we must not ignore what has come before: it will be with us for many years to come, and our transition to new sources will be easier if we take a systemwide approach to performance and compatibility. Speak to your lamp and dimmer suppliers about the compatibility testing, which they have done in order to ensure success in your next project.

Sam Woodward leads Lutron’s education programmes in Europe and Africa, and is co-author of the IET’s “Code of Practice for LED Lighting Systems” Lutron’s training courses include a new one-day “LED Deep Dive Day” which offers hands-on experience in success with LED dimming.

A very British affair An LED upgrade almost proves a step too far for a traditional country house hotel

D

anesfield House Hotel and Spa, in the heart of the Chilterns, near Marlow, is a quintessentially British country house hotel. As would be expected of a hotel of this calibre, quality is everything. So, when an experiment was undertaken to replace existing lighting with LED equivalents, the hotel’s management needed convincing to make the switch. David Spinks, hotel engineer at Danesfield House explained the challenges that the hotel’s historic credentials presented when thinking about making the switch to LED lighting: ‘I was very hesitant to introduce LED lighting at first, as this is a Grade II listed building that has a very traditional, luxurious look and feel to it. I just couldn’t see how such technology would fit in here. ‘However, I was tempted by the idea of switching to LEDs, as one of my pet hates is visiting a venue and seeing blown light bulbs. It makes the place feel uncared for. So, to

70 • M A Y 2 0 1 5 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk

avoid this at Danesfield House, my maintenance team and I were doing a daily walk around the hotel and replacing in the region of 30 light bulbs a day throughout.’

Put to the test Following discussions with Paul Stearman at LED lighting specialist, Kosnic, Spinks agreed to a trial of LED lamps in the hotel’s public areas. Almost 100 incandescent and halogen lamps were replaced with Kosnic candle and halogen LED equivalents over the course of a weekend. However the team kept the original lamps, just in case there were complaints from the hotel guests or management. Spinks said: ‘Although I wasn’t that confident about replacing the original incandescents and halogens with LEDs, and was sceptical that the light output of 3aW lamp could be as good as a 25W one, I have been proved wrong.’

To bring high quality LED lighting into Danesfield House’s Grand Hall, 48 Kosnic warm white (3,000k) 3W sparkle LED clear candle lamps were chosen to replace the 18W originals in the two dramatic chandeliers. In addition, the 60W lamps within the room’s six uplighters were replaced with warm white (3,000k) 8W LED GLS equivalents. The 18W lamps in the Minstrel’s Gallery chandeliers were also replaced with warm white 3W sparkle LED clear candle lamps and HaloLED 6W GU10 Powerspot LEDs, while 7W LED PAR20 lamps were used throughout the reception area. The LED lens and COB (Chip-on-Board) of the HaloLED ensures that it delivers exactly the same ambience as a halogen lamp, while significantly reducing lighting energy costs.

Minimal maintenance Since the installation, not a single lamp has needed changing, allowing Spinks and his team to refocus their efforts on other areas of maintenance. He concludes: ‘The fact that none of the lamps have blown is a significant benefit to me and the team. ‘I created a bespoke tool to be able to reach and change the blown lamps in the Grand Hall chandeliers, but since the LED retrofit I haven’t had to use it once. Thanks to LEDs, lighting has become a much smaller part of my job.’ Due to the longevity, light quality and energy efficiency of Kosnic’s LED lighting, a refurbishment and replacement programme is now in place to transform the hotel’s private spaces with the latest in energy efficient lighting as well.

GATEWAY T he new Ultra Low Energy (ULE) Standard may have what it takes to finally allow end users to control their entire home via one network. The smart technology can be integrated with light bulbs and lamps, but also with other devices, such as the heating system, security cameras, and white goods. The non-profit organisation, ULE Alliance recently started a certification programme for products, based on ULE. One of the main advantages of the new standard is that certified products from different manufacturers can be easily combined in one network. Designing a new light or lamp for the smart home is always challenging. Many vendors use closed systems, which means that products from other manufacturers can’t be integrated. Other systems can be expensive, difficult to set up, or not well protected and therefore vulnerable. That’s why companies such as Panasonic, VTech and Crow now use ULE for their products. The ULE Alliance expects that many other companies will follow suit. ‘The interest in the technology at the CES in Las Vegas was even bigger than expected,’ said Avi Barel from the ULE Alliance. ‘It won’t take long before we see the launch of many more products, especially as our certification programme ensures the inter-operability of all kinds of products, across manufacturers and borders.’

the use, but also the installation. The low latency of ULE, which is faster than competing technologies, gives customers immediate feedback from the network devices, and allows real-time communication between ULE products and a DECT base station. It takes 100 milliseconds to switch on ULE-equipped lights with an enabled wall switch. ULE is based on DECT frequencies, which previously had been used exclusively for cordless phones - and allows the transmission of data, as well as of speech. As a result, users can potentially control their smart home network with spoken commands. The protected frequency band (1,880-1,900 MHz) is exclusively reserved for DECT, meaning interference with other products, like baby monitors, garage door openers, and Wi-Fi devices won’t occur. The Ultra Low Energy standard is more energy efficient and eco-friendly than regular DECT too. ULE is also a particularly safe standard. The communication is encrypted using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) for

Often the push of a button is all that is needed to install and combine ULE-based products from different manufacturers. With distances of up to 300m outdoors, and 50m within buildings, the range of ULE is superior to other wireless standards, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and ZigBee. All lights in a regular household could therefore be controlled with a single concentrator, simplifying not only

electronic data, which has been established by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. Unlike the encryption in other technologies, this security standard cannot be switched off. In order to include lighting solutions and other smart home products in one network, most users won’t even need a new gateway. Existing products with integrated DECT base stations, such as some of BT’s products or AVM’s FRITZ!Box router, can be upgraded to ULE by running a simple software update.

Far sighted Much will now depend on how many companies will switch to ULE. ‘Judging by the feedback we have got over the last few months, complicated meshed networks may soon be a thing of the past,’ predicted Barel.

PEOPLE

MINUTES WITH

Will Chelsom What is your favourite light source, and why? I am a huge fan of anything retro at the moment. We are currently seeing a huge influx of ‘squirrel cage’ lamps, and they are often the main feature to any interior scheme. As much as I appreciate LED for its versatility and efficiency, I will always appreciate lighting primarily because of the way it looks. Building facades lit with colour – for or against – and why? Generally speaking, I am for this. We supplied most of the interior lighting at Mondrian London with Tom Dixon, and they have put some very cool blue exterior lighting on the facade of the Sea Containers House building, which looks amazing. However, there is a fine line between ‘Christmas Tree naff’ and sophisticated, subtle facade lighting, so you have to get it right! Who is your favourite designer of anything that’s not lighting? At the moment,I would say the interior designer, Martin Brudnizki. We are lucky enough to work with his studio on various projects, and I love all of the interior schemes they come up with. I particularly love the Holborn Dining Room at Rosewood London. Which lighting project would you like to have worked on? I really admire Firmdale Hotels, and all of Kit Kemp’s interiors. Their recent project, Ham Yard Hotel in Soho is absolutely stunning, and I would have loved to have been involved in it in some way. After the huge changes LED has brought to the industry, what do you think will be the next big advance? I think LED lighting will continue to evolve, and be used in more applications as the technology improves and becomes more affordable.

CON TACT Chelsom Lighting www.chelsom.co.uk

However, I think there will be more focus on the aesthetics of light sources. Already we are seeing the popularity of things like squirrel cage lamps and cold cathode in decorative applications, and I think that idea needs to now be blended with energy efficient light sources more. Companies like Plumen, which manufactures the decorative low energy

fluorescent lamps, are doing great things and I think we will see more of that. Do you see a time when all lighting is sustainable? If so, how can we achieve it? I find this very hard to imagine right now, because there are certain applications where sustainable lighting is not fit for purpose, and prices are often too high. However, with the constant progress being made in lighting technology - in particular with LED - I am sure this will soon change, and it will become second nature for people to use the most efficient light sources available, for both commercial and domestic situations. What trends do you forecast in domestic lighting? I hope we will see more original designs, better quality, and people thinking outside the box more. Tom Dixon is the perfect example of someone that keeps reinventing his lighting designs, and that is why he is the best in the business. Design is the most important thing for Chelsom to stand out in the hotel interior market, and it should be the same in domestic lighting. New technology will help enhance original design in the future, and should allow people to do lots of different and cool things. Why do you think lighting is bucking the general trend and showing such strong growth? I think more and more people understand that you can truly transform an interior with good lighting. Not only the top interior designers, but also domestic consumers now have access to some very interesting lighting products, and it means lighting has become very fashionable, and a real interiors talking point. Chandelier or candle? Is the candle scented? That might sway my answer... Is there one declining light source that you’ll miss above all others? If so, which is it, and why? Like many others out there, I would hate to see the death of the filament lamp; I can only imagine that will happen one day soon. It will be like getting rid of the wheel.
