Welcome to August: traditionally the month when most of Europe heads south – and who can blame them? The search for a break from everyday life, with long hot days, warm water, and that incredible eye-watering brilliance that only happens way, way south… Just thinking about it makes me want to pack my bucket and spade and head off to the nearest airport.

Sadly that’s not a possibility with a magazine to put together, but in celebration of the season, we’ve done the next best thing. This month’s issue of TL is all about hospitality. We’ve decided to split the whole hospitality offering into three easy-to-swallow chunks – restaurants, bars & nightclubs, and hotels & spas. Of course, we recognise that there are so many more areas of the industry that we haven’t been able to cover, but there’s always another month – and a girl can only enjoy herself so much in one summer season, you know.

So we begin this hospitality special with a whistle-stop tour of some of the trendiest bars and nightclubs around (no surprise there). The one thing they all have in common – apart from a clientele of alcoholfuelled bright young things – is a desire to be energy efficient. Quite a surprise when you consider the lighting requirements in these venues.

Once the hangover subsided, we moved on to the restaurant offering - somewhere where the right light source can make a good dining experience something special – and conversely, as I found to my cost, make you wish you’d stayed home with a microwaveable pizza (I’ve never tried one in truth, but it was the most disgusting foodstuff I could think of at 10am).

Never one to let the grass grow, the next stop was hotels and spas.

The ‘aaah’ is almost audible as we delve into the pampered world of lighting some of the nicest hotels you could empty your suitcase in.

And finally, we managed to smuggle ourselves on board one or two of the finest cruise ships (well, wouldn’t you?) to see what specific lighting requirements these floating palaces have.

Of course, we’ve also touched down long enough to find out what makes Dernier & Hamlyn’s Jeremy Quantrill tick, what’s on at the circus - and we must thank Mark Sutton Vane for the virtual guided tour of his stunning project to light Belfast’s Titanic Experience.

It’s been a great summer - personally, I can’t wait for next year!

highlight A L L C H A N G E Alasdair McRury, managing director of Holophane Europe was welcomed as president of the LIA for the coming year at the LIA annual lunch. He takes over from Rune Marki, CEO of OSRAM UK, who commented: ‘I have been proud to be the first president of the newly-formed LIA, and believe that much has been achieved in the last 18 months in creating a stronger representation body for the lighting industry.’ In response, McRury thanked Marki for his work and said: ‘It is important at this time of the digital revolution in lighting that the LIA works with its partners and Government to ensure that the quality standards and compliance are pursued vigorously to ensure a level playing field for all companies working in the UK lighting industry.’

The president chairs the LIA council, which comprises elected members representing all sectors of LIA membership. Meeting regularly, council members share their time, experience and expertise to help develop policies aimed at supporting a good quality and vibrant UK lighting market.

The Association has also announced the appointment of Steven Davies as CEO. He joins from the National Skills Academy for Power, leading a public sector- and private sector-backed initiative to attract and retain the skills needed to secure the UK’s power requirements into the future.

APP FOR AN EASY LIFE

Osram’s Light Finder app is now available for download, so users can find the ideal lamps or luminaires in a few short steps. The smartphone and tablet application is free of charge from the App Store and Play Store.

Light Finder offers users different ways to choose suitable lighting for their homes and can also help users select luminaires. Virtual rooms are simulated in which the various luminaires from the Osram range can be installed. This offers a quick way to see which luminaire fits best in which location. Users can also photograph their own rooms and simulate the installation of luminaires directly into their own surroundings.

Light Finder can be downloaded in German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish and Swedish.

Exam fever James Miles and Paul Yates of Kingfisher, have become the latest designers to pass the Lighting Education Trust’s (LET) Diploma in Lighting.

They have both advanced through the various qualifications from the LIA certificate to the advanced certificate, and have recently completed this latest stage.

The Diploma, launched in 2001, is a distance-learning course, run by LET in association with London South Bank University. Aimed at people already employed in the profession (though often taken by those changing from another speciality) it has become the benchmark for those wishing to boost their academic knowledge in lighting as a whole or in specific aspects of the subject.

The pair received their awards at the SLL (Society of Light and Lighting) Awards & Presidential Address.

APPOINTMENTS

Light & Flame has launched its new website (www.lightandflame.com), intended for both business and domestic users. LIGHT RELIEF Robe lighting CEO, Josef Valchar mobilised staff at the company’s HQ in Valasske Mezirici, in the Czech Republic to help contribute to humanitarian aid relief in the wake of the worst floods to hit the country in a decade.

The floods, which affected vast swaths of the Czech Republic and other central European countries, including Germany and Austria, claimed a number of lives and caused chaos as tens of thousands were evacuated from their homes.

One of the areas worst affected was Český Krumlov, host to the recent 2013 Showlight conference. Many homes in the area were flooded when the surging water levels of the river Vltava – normally a small unobtrusive creek - became a raging torrent.

Robe, based in Moravia, which luckily escaped the flooding, has formed a close link with Č eský Krumlov in the four years prior to Showlight, for which it was the main sponsor.

‘It was absolutely a no brainer’ that we should help the aid operations in the most practical and immediate ways that we could,’

explained Valchar. ‘We have a lot of friends and good relationships with people in Český Krumlov, and so we chose to support the aid operations there directly,’ Robe donated a truck full of cleaning materials, disinfectant, rubber gloves and footwear to help local inhabitants with the clean up, which is being co-ordinated by the Czech Red Cross. Marketing manager, Jiri Baros organised a collection from Robe, sister company Anolis and PCB manufacturer Dioflex, which quickly reached 20,000 Czech Crowns. This will help two local families purchase basic essentials needed to refurnish their homes, once they have dried out.

Baros said: ‘Everyone has been incredibly generous in making donations. We have all been very moved by the experience, and wanted to respond with a positive contribution. We all still remember the heavy floods here in 1997, and know the seriousness of the situation for many families.’

A major reconstruction operation is underway to repair damaged homes, properties and businesses now the waters have receded.

Shrewdd Marketing has been awarded the PRCA DARE North award for a campaign developed for Harvard Engineering to promote its outdoor wireless control and monitoring system LeafNut. The campaign helped to meet Harvard’s aim to increase

Harvard Engineering has appointed Dr Andy Davies as its business development manager for indoor controls.

An experienced industry professional, Davies has worked in the lighting industry for more than 16 years, lately for GE Lighting As product general manager, he brought to market GE’s LED lamps, modules and systems portfolio, and most recently was sales development director, responsible for the development of the company’s strategic LED module business across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

‘I am thrilled to be joining such an innovative company.

Harvard is well positioned as a leader in the new lighting industry, and has some very exciting products in the pipeline. I am really looking forward to working with the team to develop the opportunities that no doubt, these new products will generate,’ said Davies.

Judges described the campaign as ‘an illuminating creative entry’, delivering nearly ten times return on investment, and resulting in Harvard being shortlisted as a UK national finalist for the Innovation Award in the European Business Awards.

Mackwell has announced the appointment of Neil Price as global production director. Price brings more than 20 years’ experience in production and operations, having worked with blue chip companies, including Xerox and Honeywell, where he was instrumental in implementing continuous improvement plans and the development of new manufacturing strategies.

Nick Brangwin MD at Mackwell said: ‘We welcome Neil to our already strong existing management team, and his wealth of experience and knowledge will guide us through the next stage of our exciting growth plans.’

In his own words,

Jeremy Quantrill is ‘a dyed-in-the-wool Surrey-ite, who was born in Epsom and still lives in the county, with no plans to move out any time soon’. With Brian Spiking, he’s joint managing director of Dernier & Hamlyn, the 125-year-old company that’s going from strength to strength, is a proud holder of a Royal Warrant, and very definitely moving with the times. We caught up with Quantrill to find out about his ideas for the future of his chosen industry, and what makes him tick.

ACT OF FAITH One half of the team in charge at Dernier & Hamlyn, Jeremy Quantrill discusses his passion for lighting

Let’s start at the beginning.

Where did you go to school, and did your education prepare you for this industry?

‘After prep school, I went to the Arts Educational School in Barbican, London, where I had my heart set on becoming an actor (the school has spawned many famous names, including Martin Clunes, Darcey Bussell and Will Young, as well as cast members of most of the current West End shows). But when, at 16 I did not get a grant to continue there, I felt I owed it to my parents, who had already spent so much on my education, to go out and start earning my own living.’

So where did your interest in lighting stem from – and is it the design or the technical side that you prefer?

‘It all started by accident really in that my Saturday job, whilst still at school was at Surrey Lighting Centre, a main distributor for European lighting at the time.

‘I had no intention of going into lighting long term, but suddenly found I had been there for ten years!’

And is that where you learned your trade?

‘At Surrey Lighting I worked on an external lighting project for a palace in Nigeria. Dernier & Hamlyn was involved in the project too, and the then boss, Peter Hall, asked me to join his company. Peter was extremely knowledgeable and a true gentleman of the industry. He is still often in my thoughts when I seek to find solutions to lighting issues.’

I joined the company as a sales administrator. Under Peter Hall’s guidance I caught the lighting bug, working at high profile sites, including the Palace of Westminster - where I developed an interest in heritage

and historic buildings. The more I found out, the more I wanted to know - and that curiosity is still with me after all these years.

Is it the design or the technical side that you lean toward?

I really like both sides, especially where there are challenges to overcome from one to the other, such as how are we going to make emergency lighting look attractive in this heritage building? Or how are we going to work with this amazing design to accommodate LED lamps?’

Can you tell us about achieving the Royal Warrant?

We first applied in 1999, when we had significant experience of working with the Royal Household, though at that time not quite the ten years required to become a Royal Warrant holder. We eventually achieved this accolade in 2001 as ‘Bespoke Lighting Manufacturers & Restoration Specialists’ and our Warrant was renewed this year. It’s an achievement that we were, and continue to be, extremely proud of.

D&H has an excellent reputation for its work on historical lighting. How do you begin a new project; can you take us through the process?

Whilst this is an important part of the D&H story, and it continues to be part of our business, we do less of it these days with an increasing emphasis on projects in the hospitality sector, high-end residential and super yachts. They are all approached in a similar way and usually start with meeting the designers to understand their objectives, both visual and practical, so that we can propose suitable solutions that meet their clients’ needs and their budgets.

What is your feeling on the UK’s current crop of young lighting design talent? Do they get enough support from British companies to allow them to become successful?

It’s hard work, but it’s a great atmosphere and while we rib each other mercilessly, we do look out for each other

I think there is some real talent out there, and we work with some really brilliant, energetic people. But perhaps I can turn this question on its head. Do UK lighting designers provide enough support for British manufacturers? In reality much of the lighting that is described as “made in the UK” is actually only assembled here. We are competing with mass producers, often based in the Far East, where quality and knowledge are sacrificed for what is perceived as lower cost, which is often a short term solution, and isn’t sustainable in the longer term.

That’s a valid point, and one many manufacturers have concerns about. Perhaps we should be asking our designers to rally behind our manufacturers more? Speaking of designers, who’s your ‘one to watch’? Do you have a favourite?

There are several people who I rate very highly, but my all time favourite has to be Martin Valentine, who is now based in Abu Dhabi.

Most designers focus only on the lighting source and its effect. Martin understands the importance of the light fitting and how it influences the source and the end result.

Who or what inspires you?

My children! I have two young boys and feel it is important to show them the value of earning a living in something you enjoy doing.

The LED – saviour of the 21st century or still a way to go?

Definitely the latter – issues still remain with cover temperature and efficiency over the longer term. Then there are the often conflicting imperatives of energy efficiency and aesthetic quality. We are currently looking at LED lamps for heritage chandeliers and are close to a solution, which appears to tick all the boxes.

What innovations in the world of lighting excite you?

I guess it’s back to LED lamps, and combining sustainable energy usage with visual correctness. I am excited by the thought of something that works and also looks beautiful.

manufacturing and refurbishment, a very contemporary five-star hotel in Switzerland, some fantastic bespoke high-end residential fittings for a high profile client in Azerbaijan, and some work that will ensure we keep our Royal Warrant. A real mixed bag!

It certainly is! So with a mixed workload such as you describe, is there such a thing as a typical day at the office?

A day at the office means I am not really doing my job! My role is all about getting out and talking to designers, architects, contractors and clients, finding out about their plans and doing my best to ensure D&H features in them.

Quite a challenge then. So what do you do to relax and get away from the stresses of work?

Family time is the best antidote to stress - that and red wine and the occasional holiday!

I couldn’t agree more! If you had to change career now, what would you like to do?

My original ambition to be an actor might feature, but given my time again, I think I would have been a doctor. The ability to make a difference to people’s quality of life must be very rewarding.

What do you feel is the next important development in lighting technology?

It’s bound to be LED-based; the technology is moving at a rate of knots and changes on a monthly basis. Where we have got to already would have been unthinkable, even relatively recently, so where we will end up is anyone’s guess!

Are there any specific areas of lighting technology that you would like to see developing further or faster?

The ability to recycle more effectively.

Once you’ve had children, you are much more conscious about the effect your actions have on the future, so it is vital that we think beyond the here and now.

In your opinion – and you can only choose one - what’s the best light source currently available?

LED – but it needs to be developed further, to combine form and function. We are working on designs that seem to be achieving this. It’s early days but we should

be able to make some exciting announcements about this soon.

That sounds exciting. We’ll be interested to hear more when the time comes. Talking of exciting times, the lighting industry appears to be bucking the trend of most UK business, and even experiencing bit of a boom. What do you put this down to, and can you see it continuing?

Honestly, I don’t actually agree.

Whilst our 125-year old business is doing fine, our current experience is that many designers and clients are taking a lot longer to make purchasing decisions and there is a lot of mind changing going on.

That’s interesting. So the work is still going on, just with more caution perhaps. A bit like most areas of life right now where uncertainty is keeping a lid on spending… Can we ask what you’re currently working on?

Doing a similar sort of thing as now; quite probably still at D&H. We have a great team, with many of our guys on the factory floor having been here even longer than me. Finally, we’ve heard you described somewhere as a Brad Pitt-esque, lady magnet, and a leader of men? Care to comment or evolve the description?

Seriously, this is probably the most difficult question to answer. In a work context, I hope that people would see me as honest, loyal, knowledgeable - and someone they want to do business with. But I suppose you would have to ask my colleagues and the designers I work with whether this is true.

A WORLD FIRST?

LED lighting manufacturer, Low Energy Designs has completed a successful installation at Pioneer Foods in Carlisle. The company, which works extensively with the food processing sector, provides innovative and practical lighting solutions Pioneer needed professional input and tasked Low Energy Designs to find the best solution for its new lighting. Alan Parker, CEO of the Dorset-based company said: ‘We have been really pleased to have worked with Pioneer Foods and distance has not proved to be an issue.

We send our products all around the world, so Dorset to Cumbria was actually quite straightforward.’

As a result of surveys and lighting designs, Pioneer opted to install a number of SunRAY 8 luminaires. These products offer substantial savings on traditional fittings, whilst offering a very high quality light output.

The SunRAY 8 is ideal for high bay lighting in warehousing, production/ manufacturing or industrial environments. An intelligent, long lasting, lighting system it reduces energy consumption, lowers carbon emissions and allows the customer to be in charge of light intensity and associated costs.

Thermal Solution Resources has introduced what it claims to be the world’s smallest wireless LED lamp – the intelliSSL MR16 - which can be controlled remotely from smartphones, tablets or PCs. The lamp incorporates ultra-compact driver architecture with a powerful antenna system, designed to maximise reception strength, and uses an ultra-low-power wireless micro-controller from NXP Semiconductors.

AWARD-WINNING PROJECT PhotonStar’s most sustainable project, the Arcola Theatre in Hackney, has been awarded the Leisure Retrofit award in the 2013 Greenbuild Awards.

The Arcola recently underwent complete sustainable refurbishment, a key element of which was the installation of LED lighting throughout to improve efficiency and light quality.

The venue has a strong focus on environmental performance, regularly carrying out sustainability projects not only to increase efficiency but also to educate and inspire the community.

TECHNO BREAKTHROUGH

Living light AC Entertainment Technologies (AC-ET) supplied 162 x 3D graphic LED tubes and a Green Hippo media server to Static Light Company (SLC) for a magnificent interactive chandelier installation at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event held in Barcelona. SLC was asked to create an “almost walk-through interactive installation” for Ooredoo’s stand at the high-profile mobile technology tradeshow event.

SLC’s Andy Mama needed a product with a convincing 360 degree viewable angle that would allow for colour changing and pixel mapping effects: SGM’s modular, lightweight LT-100 LED graphic tubes were the perfect solution.

Working closely with lighting designer, Ross Corbett, the circular chandelier uses 162 tubes, suspended at varying heights from a 3m box truss, which carried the concealed power cables, allowing the tubes to be raised and lowered independently of the main truss. However: ‘It turned out that this was hardly necessary, as the SGM LT-100 and cabling performed exceptionally reliably,’ explained Mama. ‘It went up and stayed up – solid as a rock.’

Comprising a series of one-metre pixel sticks loaded with RGB LEDs, each of the LT-100’s pixels can be addressed individually via DMX to create stunning 3D lighting effects.

Mama continued: ‘The reactions from spectators was thrilling.

This was a really fun project which allowed us to introduce a technology rarely seen in a corporate tradeshow environment.

‘The service and support from AC-ET has been invaluable… the efficiency and speed of the supply was critical to the success of the project.’

Molex has announced a new development in LED array holder technology with integral electrical, mechanical and optical connectivity for optimal performance, and to simplify design integration for lighting manufacturers.

The technology transfers the connectivity and ease-of-use features from the LED array metal or ceramic substrate to a separate plastic body substrate, allowing for improvements in functionality.

This technology, co-developed with Bridgelux, is expected to make future LED array products easier to integrate and more cost effective, enabling lighting OEMs to reduce system costs, decrease time to market and to improve the reliability of LED luminaires they design.

‘This new interconnect technology is a dramatic advancement in LED light source packaging,’ explained Jim Miller, chief sales and marketing officer at Bridgelux. ‘This simplifies many of our customers’ immediate system integration problems, and will help usher in the era of smart lighting systems. We know that in the not too distant future we will see convergence occur in solid state lighting, just as it has with consumer electronics.

That convergence will require additional functionality, sensors, communications, and other features incorporated into the LED light engine. This advanced platform technology is well suited to enable convergence through its new product architecture.’

“With electricity costing £450 per month, despite very favourable unit rates being negotiated, I soon became keen to reduce electricity consumption.”

As with most retailers the lighting bills are a huge cost to the business due to the amount of hours they have to be on so the savings that can be made are significant. On average lighting equates to over 20% of the total electricity bill so the 90% reduction in electricity consumption provided by LED bulbs can generate some impressive savings as David found out during his case study.

“As almost all lights are on for over 13 hours per day, I expected significant savings. I then carried out very detailed calculations and was actually surprised to find that savings by replacing just 61 lights with LEDs would be well over £1,000 per year.“ However, the costs that David has calculated in his case study doesn’t actually include the cost savings that will also be made from the reduced maintenance and replacements costs as LED bulbs last over 20 years unlike traditional bulbs. This LED bulb durability will also add further impressive savings for the retailers.

“Replacing failing traditional lights was very common problem, with expensive replacement costs and time consumed refitting in certain enclosed fittings.”

One important key consideration to remember is that LED’s are fit for purpose and allow retailers the important function of effectively showcasing their products. With modern technology constantly evolving the various types of LED’s can create flexible and adaptable mood settings to help sell products or make consumers feel comfortable within the retail space which all helps to drive sales.

“Having replaced all the 50 watt halogens with 4 watt GU10s, I started to look at what other lights I could replace. I realised that all fittings were available including full size bayonet and screw fittings used by traditional light bulbs. Can the high octane, fast paced, pulsating light of bars and clubs ever be truly energy efficient? ightclubs, live music bars and casinos are commonplace in towns and cities the world over. Easy to spot for the wannabe reveller, they shine out beacon-like with the promise of good times to be had, in the semi-darkness of our urban nights. So what’s going on behind the doors?

Lyco has been involved in converting the lighting in a number of after-dark business premises to more energy-efficient and costeffective options, including the UK’s largest casino group, Genting. At the outset, Lyco undertook a feasibility study and cost analysis, which looked at reducing energy costs and carbon emissions by installing a suitable LED solution across Genting’s portfolio.

The company’s sites are all very different, which meant that once a design plan had been agreed, the installation engineers had to

adapt it to meet the requirements of individual buildings. It was important for the success of the project to gain support from the managers of each site: once the level of energy and maintenance saving had been substantiated, they were all fully committed to the plan.

For Genting, the main benefits of the conversion to LED were energy savings of up to 90 per cent on the previous lighting design, a vast reduction in both maintenance costs and time spent replacing broken lamps, and of course, a reduction in carbon emissions of 762 tonnes. The conversion programme, which was project managed by Lyco, was completed on time and within budget, and promises to provide Genting with a return on investment inside a year.

Energy efficiency wasn’t the top priority at Jimbo & Rex, a redevelopment of an existing bar at the Crown casino complex in Melbourne, with interiors by Mim Design. However, using modern lighting means that the venue is

Mirror finishes around the bar and seating areas reflect light throughout the space, adding sparkle and glow likely to see substantial energy savings in the future. The decorative lighting design style takes its cue from Miriam Fanning’s interior design, characterised by the use of natural materials such as bleached wood, stone, ceramic tile and cotton canvas to create a neutral palette.

Accents of darker timber and copper are used on the walls and window framings. The feature lighting by POV includes bespoke contemporary chandeliers in glass and copper; being able to see the light source gives the lighting a traditional feel despite it being bang up to date when it comes to energy saving technology. Mirror finishes around the bar and seating areas reflect light throughout the space adding sparkle and glow. Reflecting the light in this way effectively reduces the need for multiple fittings, helping to cut energy consumption. Concealed lighting is used to illuminate vertical surfaces; a choice was made to wash the light to increase brightness in the space without the use of excessive ambient lighting. Other surfaces, such as bottle displays and artwork are accented either by integral lighting or concealed customised spotlights.

A number of features are accent lit, including porcelain plates, trees, pot plants and a double-height art wall made of recycled timber.

Allowing contrasts was important for the display of these elements.

Custom pendants above the boomerangshaped bar and in the dining area were created with a copper finish, to complement the copper accents elsewhere in the interior. Decorative fittings were sourced from Ricardo Lighting and Roll & Hill, while architectural designs came from Masson Lighting, Inlite, ECC and Litesource.

‘The client wanted the new venue to retain the relaxed atmosphere of a pub, but to offer a fresh take on casual dining and a late night bar service,’ explained Sara McClintock, senior lighting designer at POV. Linked to one of the main indoor promenades in the Crown complex, the bar area is visible through a full height window. One of the main lighting challenges that PoV had to overcome was to ensure the space could compete visually with light from the promenade, while at the same time allowing comfortable ambient levels within the venue.

The brief for a nightclub in Lucerne was to make it the best in Switzerland. The 1000-capacity Vegas Dance Club features a regular line up of hot international DJs to wow partygoers. Lighting designer, Frank Alofs from Audiotech KST AG, was asked by the venue’s owners to come up with an exciting lighting scheme to match the

vibe and underline the exclusive feel of the venue. His concept was based on LED moving lights, as both he and the client wanted a rig that – in addition to looking amazing - was as sustainable as possible and offered excellent value for money and low on-going running costs.

Alofs made the decision to place twelve Robin LEDBeam 100s, eight DLX Spots and four LEDWash 300s at the centre of his design.

These are rigged on circular trussing in the roof space and around the underside of the first floor balcony, following the spherical design of the venue’s dance floor and DJ booth.

Alofs commented on his choice of fixture: ‘Right now, there is no other range of moving lights that offer the flexibility and dynamics of Robe,’ he said. He admitted to being particularly impressed with the colour continuity between the different fixtures across the range, and also with the speed of their pan/tilt movement, the general intensity and the small physical dimensions.

The LEDWash 100s are rigged in the roof and under the balcony, where their small size takes advantage of the lower headroom. The ultrabright beams shoot out into the roof void above the main dance floor and scan down onto the packed crowds below, where they are ideal for fast moving audience interaction.

Alofs sayd he also liked the virtual colour wheel of the DLX Spot, which comes pre-programmed with 237 colours, including a selection of authentic different colour temperature whites from 2700-8000 K. ‘It is a fantastic fixture – very fast in all aspects, he enthused. Alofs, of Muttenz-based Audiotech, worked closely with the installation company, Privilege Events on the project, for which he oversaw and coordinated all the technical elements.

Robe’s moving lights were also in action at a recent DJ set performance by Chase & Status at the Saku Suurhall in Tallin, Estonia. The fittings were at the core of the lighting rig, designed by Meelis Lusmägi for the event. Lusmägi’s brief was to produce a big, bold, dynamic and spectacular club-style lightshow in the largest venue in Estonia. To help achieve the vibe he wanted for the event, Lusmägi specified 24 Robin MMX Spots and 12 MMX WashBeam fixtures as key elements of the rig, together with 40 Robin 100 LEDBeams and 12 ColorSpot 1200E ATs – all Robe products.

Additionally, a single DigitalSpot 3000 Mk II was used for beaming sponsor logos and a selection of promotional graphics around the venue.

The majority of the lights were flown above the stage on trusses, with additional numbers at floor level. The LEDBeam 100s were arranged in two matrix-style walls on either side of the stage, in five rows of four. They provided cross stage lighting and patterns. The MMX Spots were rigged on the back of the overhead trussing and used to light the stage and the dancers, and also for shooting out into the audience. They also textured the floor with intricate gobo patterns. The MMX WashBeams placed on the floor, upstage of the DJ booth created highimpact aerial effects. The ColorWashes were

hung on the front trusses, which was perfect for producing solid downstage washes covering the dancers and the DJ booth area.

TOW IE?

An article on bars and nightclubs wouldn’t be complete without a visit to what’s hailed as the nightlife capital of the UK – Essex. And there were plenty to choose from. Rayleigh’s new Bar Blanco has a contemporary atmosphere, and has been designed with impeccable attention to detail. To add upscale flair and intrigue to its private seating booths, lighting design company, Lightqube selected Traxon’s 64PXL Mirror Wash RGB to create a visually interesting backdrop for different times of day or night. The mirrored LED installation is capable of displaying 16 different dynamic graphic effects. Changing colour, speed, and brightness, Traxon’s 64PXL Mirror Wash RGB dramatically alters the mood of the venue.

The wall is controlled by e:cue Butlers and is connected to an iPad application, which the staff can use to select pre-programmed shows and lighting schemes.

Just down the road in Billericay, Traxon has been busy with another new venue for the party set. Vetro is a sophisticated bar with an original, stylish interior, where patrons can enjoy a quiet glass of wine during the day, or experience a lively atmosphere with an in-house DJ at night.

Vetro Bar’s design team also chose Traxon’s 64PXL Mirror Wash RGB, this time to highlight the back bar. The reflective LED panel has 64 individually addressable RGB pixels, which provide an elegant, technologically advanced canvas for graphics and videos. An intelligent processor creates a fusion effect, allowing the display to seamlessly transition between complex images and colours, enhancing and evoking emotion in the space.

et in 100 acres of unspoilt woodland outside Burnley, Crow Wood Leisure and Equestrian Centre is a private members fitness club, which has recently opened The Woodland Spa, a new £4m luxury day spa with treatment rooms, a 25-metre pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room for members’ use.

Pettit Singleton Associates was tasked with providing a lighting scheme for the venue, which would offer a high-end atmosphere throughout the premises. It needed to be fully controllable, with different scene settings, and the light output had to provide interest to the overall scheme. Additionally, the lighting in corridors and treatment rooms also had to be sufficient to see and work by, but indirect in keeping with the theme.

Paul King from Pettit Singleton explained: ‘The existing leisure centre uses mainly fluorescent light sources, and the client was very aware of the associated running and maintenance costs.

Therefore they were very keen to use high quality, low maintenance, efficient luminaires - and LED’s fell within this brief.’

T H E S OLU T I O N

All of the luminaires specified for the project use LEDs and all are DALI dimmable, in order to adhere to the client brief. The designs came from a range of manufacturers, including Deltalight, Photonstar, Zumtobel, Fibre Optic FX and ACDC. For general lighting, the team specified Zumtobel’s Panos Infinity E150 with painted optic. ‘This LED downlighter is very efficient (up to 84 lm/W) and the trimless version looks superb when installed. The version used in the pool areas had the IP54 bezel installed, so weren’t trimless,’ explained King Deltalight’s Tweeter Trimless Reo luminaires were used in areas where adjustable LED spots were required. ‘These are different to the usual adjustable spotlights, and looked fantastic when installed,’ agreed King. ‘In other areas where spotlighting was required, we used the Photonstar Ceilingstar a range of LED spotlights that are efficient, compact and very good value.’

Storm Xicato from acdc was specifically used to create a scalloping effect on the wall. As King explained: ‘This luminaire was particularly difficult to find, as different spotlights create different effects, such as feathering or bleeding. Storm however, creates the desired crisp edged scallop-effect on the walls.’

B RIN GIN G IT TOGETH ER

Emergency lighting was provided by Zumtobel’s Resclite fittings, with exit signs connected to an Onlite local emergency lighting control system.

The lighting control system was also from Zumtobel – in this case, the DALI protocol, Litenet.

Each treatment room (numbering 11 in total) has its own Ciria controller, which looks similar to an iPod. Other spaces have PIR’s, local switches and threescene wall plates. The lighting is controlled via a PC, but can also be controlled using an iPad or tablet.

The majority of the luminaires have DALI control ballasts, so they have full functionality with the control system, which enables them to be dimmed and be programmed for different scene settings.

‘Some of the bespoke pendant luminaires that are not dimmable, still sit on the control system,’ explained King, ‘however they are simply on or off with no dimming functionality.’

Finally, the chandelier-style pendant luminaires sited in the main reception and treatment room corridor were from Chantelle lighting. Commenting on the project, King said: ‘The finished scheme was excellent, and the luminaires really make the lighting stand out, creating the feel that the client was looking for.’

The grant, from the DECC Energy Entrepreneurs Fund, will be used to develop PhotonStar’s ChromaWhite smart circadian retrofit LED lighting solutions, particularly the ChromaWhite smart lamp, a standard lamp form factor, with full wireless control. The money will be available to the company in instalments on the completion of certain developmental milestones within the current financial year.

ChromaWhite is the Group’s next generation light engine technology, which allows microprocessor controlled colour tuning and superior light quality, at an extremely competitive price-point.

James Mckenzie, CEO of PhotonStar, commented: ‘This grant is a great endorsement of our energy-efficient ChromaWhite technology, and will enable us to accelerate the development of our exciting product range’.

Full steam ahead The UK’s largest urban tram network - Greater Manchester’s Metrolink - is utilising Scolmore’s system to provide lighting at tram stops across the network. Since the first lines to Bury and Altrincham opened in 1992, the network has more than doubled in size, with lines to Eccles, Oldham and Rochdale, Droylsden, Chorlton and MediaCityUK bringing passengers into the heart of Manchester. Trams now cover 70km of track, stopping at 65 designated points – and the multi-million pound expansion of the system continues, with Metrolink set to become the largest urban tram network in the UK.

When a co-operative enterprise in Valencia renewed its portfolio of food safety standards, GlassGuard was selected to satisfy the compliance criteria required to protect the lighting.

Cooperative Vitivinicola de la Pobla del Duc, (part of the Annecoop Group) processes fruit for export to a number of retailers worldwide, including Aldi in the UK. In a pre-audit inspection, it was found that lamps positioned above its production and packaging area were not protected and therefore posed a serious risk of contamination to produce. ‘One of the biggest issues we faced was that all the luminaires (about 30) had to be protected in accordance to the “major must” requirement of the Certification. Changing the fittings and protecting the bulbs was a big investment to meet this requirement. I CAN SEE CLEARLY... ...more’s the pity. Dodgy food and less than perfect dinner companions can spoil even the most robust appetite ast weekend, I had the misfortune to eat in a bad restaurant – a really bad restaurant. The food was below par, there was almost no atmosphere, and to be honest, we wouldn’t have walked through the doors at all had we not already agreed to meet friends inside.

So what was wrong? As much as I’d like to share the horror story of what was actually on our plates, it really has no place here (and you may well be eating as you read) so I’ll restrict my comments to the atmosphere – or lack thereof. I did wonder – albeit briefly – whether we were being unfair, but to sit through a meal under fluorescent strip lighting that was bright enough to sear the back of your eyeballs, meant that we got to see the food, the surroundings, the staff and even our friends in a whole new – and very unflattering - light.

It may well be the best thing for the chef to see by – although, judging by what was on our plates, I’d dispute that – but the lack of imagination when it came to lighting the space was truly staggering.

Whoever was in charge of the interior design really should have been shot – or at least made to eat there for a week – for ignoring the most important element of a hospitality venue that good lighting provides.

Jon Sharman of Lyco has some practical advice: ‘You might remember the nature of a waiting area; the need to be able to communicate with customers, so lighting needs to be adequate enough that they can be identified,’ he commented. ‘If you’re after a contemporary feel and want to create a talking point, innovative designs from Graypants and Plumen are worth a look. With Plumen it’s all about the curvaceous designer lamp itself, so pendants are deliberately austere. ‘Graypants is famous for crafting stunning ‘scraplights’ from reclaimed cardboard, with products proving popular in high-end restaurants across the world. Top Dutch chef, Ron Blaauw recently closed his eponymous restaurant - awarded two Michelin stars - and promptly opened the contemporary RON gastrobar at the same venue in Amsterdam, adorned with Graypants lighting.’

When the hungry customer finally makes it to table, he doesn’t want to be put off his food by his dinner companion. ‘Some people are naturally blessed with good looks, but as any canny portrait photographer will tell you, there are ways and means to light all people well and make them feel comfortable,’ explained Sharman. ‘At table, soft, diffused light works well - perhaps a simple shaded table lamp. Lowhanging ceiling pendants can be used to define space and provide intimacy, and a closed shade with diffuser helps to spread a soft light over the table. A product like the Arden pendant from Endon might serve you well here.’

Food-related lighting is quirky and can add a fun element to the dining experience. A local 50’s-style tea-room we’ve been known to visit,features a glorious chandelier, hand made by a local artisan using translucent vintage cups and saucers, delicate milk jugs and even a small tea pot. The fitting hangs between a galleried seating area and the main floor, and has been artfully lit using LEDs, which exaggerate the translucency of the fine porcelain without causing glare from the surfaces.

Scabetti is well known for its signature Shoal pendant, which has been used to great effect at Watatsumi, a Japanese restaurant in central London. A 1.2m diameter, 90cm high Shoal featuring clear glazed fine bone china fish, with a central cluster of six chrome-capped bulbs is a natural fit for the sushi bar. The client embraced the design, continuing its use for a second venue in Barcelona, where a 4.5m long version, featuring approximately 900 fish was installed.

Melbourne’s new Rosetta Ristorante at the Crown casino complex, recently won the Best New Restaurant award from Epicure and Good Food magazine.

Rosetta is a sophisticated Italian restaurant with highly professional service, seasonal menus and a devotion to simple regional dishes. The interior design, by Iain Halliday, presents a luxurious traditional aesthetic, within a supremely elegant contemporary idiom.

The aim for the lighting, by Sara McClintock and Bernie Tan-Hayes at POV Melbourne, was to create the illusion that the light emanates from traditional sources, such as Venetian chandeliers, table lamps and brass picture lights. However, beneath the surface are the latest technologies integrated into the lighting and cleverly concealed. Downlights are hidden within the ceiling detailing. LEDs and fibre optics are cached behind domes, joinery and picture lights, creating unexpected effects that sculpt the space with light and add imperceptible emotion.

where guests can truly enjoy their food and company,’ commented POV design director, Mark Elliott. Murano glass chandeliers and table lamps from the 750-year-old Barovier & Toso play lead roles after dark. Key materials are subtly revealed through the use of concealed lighting, while displays of wine glasses are directly illuminated to add sparkle which then bounces off the chandeliers.

‘We are very lucky to have the opportunity to work with Neil,’ said McClintock, senior designer at POV. ‘He is passionate about the details in all aspects of his restaurants, and it’s this which takes the dining experience to another level.’

Perry is knowledgeable in the magic that lighting can bring to a space, and encouraged POV to achieve a sense of intimacy at every table. ‘Even the bustling kitchen was considered a space where warm light is essential,’ she explained.

POV also worked on the lighting element of the Man Tong Kitchen at the Melbourne complex.

Elliott said: ‘It’s interesting to see how different the lighting and ambiance is, from one project to the other. I’m proud of how precisely my team at POV focus on the individual character of each design project.’

Man Tong’s interior, by BY Architects, follows a contemporary ideal of traditional Chinese style, with a very rich combination of materials and vibrant colour.

‘The intention of the lighting is to accentuate this richness, and bring to life all the key finishes, artwork, furniture and decorative elements in the space,’ explained McClintock. Elliott and his team were sensitive to cultural differences: Chinese restaurants are traditionally much brighter than restaurants in the West. In the private dining room they needed to meet the high light level requirements of a traditional Chinese banquet, while satisfying Western tastes for ambient light with high accents, drama and intimacy.

Each area is hung with a decorative pendant or chandelier; the fittings chosen to reflect a traditional look with a strong contemporary nature. Feature lighting in the private dining rooms was carefully selected to communicate a contemporary oriental feel. The central restaurant pendant is a bespoke piece designed by the POV team, in a variation of a traditional Chinese lantern. ‘We integrated the main tones of red and gold to relate to the interior as a whole,’ explained McClintock.

BY Architects is an award winning architectural and interiors practice focussing on quality boutique and niche projects. ‘The brief was to create a warm yet dramatic space, based on traditional Chinese teahouse themes,’ explained associate director, Lisa Chan. ‘POV was asked

to design feature and architectural lighting to help achieve a sense of warmth and airiness to a variety of spaces. Uplighting of the feature pitched ceiling in the main dining room was also important to show the volume of the space, with the insertion of custom-made oversized lantern pendants helping to accentuate it.’

CA LLIN G TH E CR OW D

In order to wow potential patrons with the dining experience, restaurateurs have to first entice them through the door. AC Special Projects (ACSP) has provided an exterior LED colour-changing scheme for Da Mario Gastronomia Napoletana, an Italian restaurant in London’s Gloucester Road that does exactly that. Located a short walk from Kensington Palace, the 120-year-old building was commissioned by Queen Victoria and merges Venetian and Gothic architectural styles.

Lance Bromhead, who project managed the job for ACSP commented: ‘It was really vital for the lighting to be elegant, understated and appropriate for the application, given the historic significance of the building’s exterior, and we set out to fulfil all these criteria.’

After initial site surveys, a lighting trial was undertaken using key architectural LED brands.

Based on the results, it was decided to illuminate the top story of the building’s facades with a careful combination of Pulsar ChromaFlood 100 fixtures featuring 25- and 45-degree beam angles, and ChromaFlood 200 battens with 10 x 50-degree lenses.

The weather-proof IP66 units were chosen for their proven reliability and compact size enabling them to be concealed discreetly with minimal impact on the architecture. ACSP also supplied a Mode ColorStyle DMX controller, chosen for its in-built astronomical clock feature, which turns the installation on and off at predetermined times of the day. The default programme is a slow, subtle colour-changing cycle that fades through six colours, illuminating the facades and creating a highly visible feature that draws attention to the restaurant.

The management team have the flexibility to tailor the colours and effects to suit special events and promotions. Marco Molino, Da Mario’s owner commented: ‘ACSP has been very helpful, from choosing the equipment, to installing it and training our staff how to use it. We are very pleased with the results and the exterior lighting has really helped bring the building’s features to life.’

The name has been synonymous with disaster, but the Titanic Experience in Belfast is helping to change public perception.

Lighting designer on the project, Mark Sutton Vane provides a personal view of the venue, its lighting, and the history behind this stunning spectacle Words: Mark Sutton Vane

The Titanic

was built in Belfast; when launched she was the biggest ship in the world. For many years after the tragic sinking, Belfast seemed to want the world to forget her heritage. With the finding of the wreck and then the blockbuster film, the story of Titanic just kept on getting more popular. With the advent of peace to Northern Ireland, Belfast started on a programme of regeneration, and the city’s leaders began to see the benefits of celebrating its amazing achievements.

I had been personally responsible for lighting the huge statue, The Lady of Thanksgiving, installed beside the river Lagan in Belfast as a celebration of the end of the area’s troubles.

This dramatic piece of lighting design and his successful work at the Museum of Liverpool led to Sutton Vane Associates being appointed to light the Titanic Experience.

The Experience is the signature project of Belfast’s huge new Titanic Quarter. The venue had to open in time for the hundredth anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, back in 1912. The building was going up very fast when Sutton Vane Associates was appointed, so the lighting scheme had to be designed fast to keep up with the progress on site. Everyone working on the project knew the deadline and the whole construction team worked together to complete it on time.

The exterior of the building dramatically evokes the shape of a ship and stands in a huge open space to give it even more impact. The outside had to be lit, and I decided that it would be wrong to have any kind of lighting that cluttered up the space or detracted from the view of the building.

So the outside is lit by recessed in-ground uplights. These are flush with the paving and so keep the view of the building completely free.

Much calculation and design was put into selecting and positioning the fittings so that they would reveal the rhythm of the complex geometry that makes up the ship-like structures’ surface.

The light that reflects off its external surfaces lights the large open space around it, which becomes a lit beacon for this part of Belfast.

The visitor enters the building, arriving in a huge atrium. Panels that look like ship’s plates line part of the space and are individually lit with lighting that changes; different plates are lit at different times.

Visitors enter the experience by travelling up a very long escalator - the longest freestanding escalator in Europe. The light level on the escalator is kept deliberately low to enhance the visitor’s views of the atrium as they are carried upward. On the lift shafts, the colour temperature of the linear light that outlines the structure is warm at the bottom and gradually changes to cool at the top.

There are two main interior elements: the Titanic Experience itself and the Titanic Suite of banqueting and conference spaces. The Experience takes the visitor through a series of spaces, including nine galleries that tell the story of Belfast, the design and construction of the mighty ship, the launch, its maiden voyage, the awful sinking and the aftermath.

I wanted to ensure that each part of the story has its own type of lighting and its own atmosphere. For instance, in one particular space, the rivets on steel girders are emphasised by light that skims across the surface, to show the strength and power of the hundreds of rivets. Another area is lit with moving cool blue watery projections to add to the icy atmosphere after the sinking. To get these projections bright enough, 200W metal halide light sources were used.

In the theatre space, there is blue light from linear LED sources under the seats to keep the atmosphere cool.

There are exact replicas of the cabins, one from each class – and each cabin has replica working light fittings. Great British Lighting was tasked with manufacturing the fittings, which were specified for GLS lamps to give historical accuracy to the quality of the light. Cases that hold historical objects are lit

by fibre optics from UFO. In addition, fittings by Mike Stoane, Precision Lighting, Projection Lighting, Light Projects, ACDC Lighting and Concord were used for specific elements throughout the spaces.

In one area, there is a view outside the building to the actual slipways where both Titanic and her sister ship, Olympic rested: seeing these slipways makes the visitor feel really close to the birthplace of this amazing vessel.

TH E DA RK RIDE

I also spent time working on the lighting design for the dark ride. My experience lighting the dark rides at Madame Tussauds’ attractions, where I used to work, was very helpful. I had to analyse how the lighting would be triggered by the cars, to light up the right views for each part of the ride, at the right times, for the visitors moving around a complex route through the space.

The banqueting suites at the top of the building are a range of rooms of different size and character. The largest is very grand - and has a wonderful recreation of Titanic’s famous main staircase that featured so prominently in the film, which has been lit to give it emphasis. The lighting in this room is very flexible; much of the lighting can change colour to set the right mood for a particular event. It is possible to spotlight individual tables, as is commonly needed in formal banqueting, by remotely controlled very narrow beam spotlights.

The Titanic Belfast has achieved its aim of creating a major new destination for Belfast with an extraordinary 500,000 visitors in the first six months of opening.

Boutique bliss A light source for everything, and everything illuminated by the correct source

here isn’t a one-size fits-all approach to hotel lighting, despite what some of the best-known chains would have us believe. After all, a small guest room that faces north and gets very little natural daylight is going to need different treatment to a sunny, south facing suite with wall-to-wall glass – isn’t it?

Surely, every space should be looked at as an individual environment, with the appropriate light sources and fittings selected for the comfort of both guests and staff? That’s exactly what Proof Consultancy did for client, Accor Hotels’ first Pullman-branded UK venue, the four-star Pullman London St Pancras.

A thoroughly modern Central London hotel, it features a range of beautifully crafted, bespoke lighting. Interior design company,

Proof Consultancy commissioned Chelsom to supply the lighting throughout the guestrooms and public areas, to enhance the modern design aesthetic. Oozing contemporary chic, the lighting scheme is predominantly bespoke, with modern lines and shapes at the forefront of the design. The highlight of the guestroom lighting is custom designed striped shades, beautifully complemented by the brushed nickel finish of all the fittings, including the LED reading lights, fitted to leather headboards.

Finally, crane-style floor lamps crowned with perforated metal shades line the lift lobby and lounge, while both the bar and reception are lit by ultra modern ‘up and over’ LED task lights.

When it comes to statement builds, Scandic’s Victoria Tower Hotel in Stockholm is right up there. The tallest hotel in the Nordic countries, the ‘sequin dress-inspired’ design by Gert Wingårdh, combines drama with world-class design.

With an eye to the future, Scandic required that the hotel be as energy efficient as it is beautiful. To this end, the design team specified numerous energy saving products, including Megaman’s innovative lamp technology, which assures savings of at least €300,000 and 175,000 kg CO2 during the lifespan of the lighting installation.

Having worked with the Scandic Group on previous projects, this was the first time Megaman had worked with iconic architectural lighting company, Flos - and the results are stunning. Throughout the hotel’s corridors and public spaces, 900 bespoke luminaires, including both down-lighters and wall fittings have been specified to utilise LED PAR16 7W GU10 reflectors with 35-degree beam angle, and LILIPUT PLUS 23W E27 CFLs. The corridors have been fitted with Flos’ Easy Kap - a ceiling-recessed down-lighter by Philippe Starck that fits flush to the ceiling for an understated look, while Flos’ Mini Glo Ball luminaires, made from Murano glass to give off a soft white light, have been fitted with Megaman’s GU9 series of 7W CFL’s for all 300 guest bathrooms.

Patric Fagerberg from Megaman Sverige AB was delighted with the results: “We are very pleased to be associated with the Scandic Victoria Tower and to have worked with Flos to achieve such stunning results,’ he enthused.

The Pangu Plaza is the first seven-star hotel in China. The opulent Far East venue, which opened just in time for the 2008 Bejing Olympics, is part of the Pangea Plaza, an architectural complex close to the now famous ‘Bird’s Nest’ stadium. Designed by CY Lee, architect of the Taipei 101 building, the Plaza comprises an office tower, a museum, a heliport, three apartment blocks, and the hotel with its 270 suites. Thanks to AC Morgan president, Miles Kwok’s enthusiasm for Italian design, the hotel is a showcase for Italian companies and designers: furnishings by Alberto Meda, doors by Antonio Citterio, and lighting by iGuzzini.

The company provided lighting for the suites using Deep Frame, a range of discreet and versatile recessed downlights with multiple lamps.

reserved lighting, enhancing the architecture and atmosphere. Where possible, recessed luminaires were used that don’t project from the ceiling, so that the lighting layout is simple and neat.

The Easy fluorescent system from iGuzzini was used in the beauty treatment area and in the shower cubicle zone. In particular, in the wellness area, where the look is dominated by dark surfaces, lighting was kept to a minimum to provide a comforting, relaxing atmosphere. In the large lounge, uplighting contributes to visitors’ feeling of wellbeing: lit perimeters have been created by grooves cut into false ceilings, fitted with Reglette fluorescent luminaires, also from iGuzzini.

Mark Elliott, design director of POV, recently completed a project to light the international award-winning Darling Hotel & Spa in Sydney. The client, Echo Entertainment, wanted to create a destination hotel to compliment a new casino development, with a space so beautifully designed that it draws clientele across the harbour to the complex. With spectacular views of the harbour and city skyline, the fivestar boutique hotel is a central feature of The Star Casino’s $870m redevelopment programme.‘In a casino hotel, you can often go further with lighting elements than with a city hotel,’ explained Elliott, speaking of his dramatic lighting scheme. ‘The biggest challenge was the double-height atrium that occupies half of the lobby space.’

In such a high space, creating a feeling of intimacy is hard, so POV used light sources at low level: floor lamps, integrated joinery lighting and in-ground luminaires. The feature wall behind the reception desk glows with a red tone, drawing the eye through to the lower ceilinged zone.

Chandeliers were hung to add an element of luxury to the space - and to help fill the triple height void, without competing with the architecture of the atrium roof. ‘We up-lit the flanking sandstone walls, bringing the lighting to human level, and drawing the eye down from the sky beyond,’ Elliott continued. He was determined to light the spa space for comfort, rather than function. As a lucrative addition to the hotel, the lighting was critical in making clients comfortable in a space where they might otherwise feel vulnerable or exposed. ‘I love lighting spas,’ enthused Elliott. ‘You can push darkness to its limits, and fully explore the drama of shadows.’ In this instance, integrated light plays a huge role, for instance where light spills from the slots in joinery and provides indirect illumination to promote relaxation.

Larry Mullin, CEO of Echo Entertainment Group, said: ‘We think it’s an innovative and aesthetically beautiful building, that appeals to business and leisure travellers looking for something different to chain hotels.’

And that, in a nutshell, is what it’s all about – appealing to people who want something a little bit different from the chains – and innovative, bespoke lighting will do just that.

are big news and big business.

There’s already a lot of choice out there and no sign of manufacturers letting up on the stream of new ideas that are coming to market. The insatiable appetite from the new generation of developers and systems designers, who are bringing a whole new way of thinking to creating building environments, will keep this market vibrant indefinitely. So what’s new?

Open protocols seem to have won the battle for hearts and minds, with KNX at last taking, what I believe to be, its rightful place at the forefront of smart thinking. It’s now leading the way in the UK alongside other systems, such as DALI lighting control (with KNX-DALI gateways enabling them to work alongside each other). Open and flexible is the way forward.

Consultants are, at last changing their specifications to include KNX building control systems, causing heating and lighting engineers to talk to each other across the Chinese Wall that has traditionally separated them. The driver for this change is of course, financial, with high fuel costs and de facto levies like the Carbon Reduction Commitment. The enabler is the availability of powerful and flexible controls that make implementing new ideas and integrating building services easy and logical.

Dimming actuators for LEDs have been a problem with no agreed standard for LED drivers.

It has left lighting designers in a quandary, not being able to have the luminaires they want because they can’t dim them.

One of the key challenges for KNX systems’ designers at the moment – and indeed for any lighting designer - is the dimming of LED lights. Since there is no agreed standard for the design of LED drivers, every manufacturer is free to do what they think best. This has made specifying a universal device to control dimmable LED lighting challenging, however Theben has stepped up to the plate with its range of KNX dimmers. Optimised dimming curves are built in to the device, with the option to add new curves at a later date as they become available. This technology has already been successfully installed in a number of UK sites, using many leading brands of dimmable LED lights.

Combining presence detection and constant light control in one device, keeps the light level in a given area steady, even if ambient light changes. DAZZLING DRIVERS Adaptive forward lighting - in other words, glare-free cameracontrolled headlamps that react instantly - will help drivers in the future thanks to additional intelligent functions. The key to this complex functionality is the integration of microelectronics and optoelectronics – one of the principal aspects of the research project sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (FMER) within the Photonics Research Germany programme. Osram is contributing its expertise as the project coordinator and market leader in LED lighting for the automotive sector.

The aim of this joint programme is to develop the technical framework for a new class of energy-efficient LED headlamp with supplementary traffic safety functions. This can provide the basis for adaptive forward lighting systems (AFS) that offer drivers and passengers increased safety.

Improved safety will come for example from glare-free high and low beam functions that adapt to the speed of the vehicle. At high speed, the range of the light is automatically increased. In city traffic however, a wider distribution of the light can improve road safety by illuminating more of the pavement and road margins.

These functions are fully electronic so there is no need for mechanical actuators.

Osram is bringing its expertise to this project as the project coordinator and market leader in LED lighting for the automotive sector. The semiconductor specialist has extensive know-how in chip and converter technologies. Osram’s Specialty Lighting division will be developing new electronic control gear for controlling the LED headlamp system.

Project coordinator at Osram, Stefan Grötsch, is satisfied with progress so far: ‘We have brought together major-league players in their respective sectors, assembling a wealth of expertise for this pioneering project around one table,’ he said.

Miami nice An elegant option for weddings, corporate events and photo shoots, Studio 743 dominates the skyline on Miami’s Washington Avenue. The tower is lit by nine Iluminarc fixtures, with additional wash lights used to enhance a water fountain with vivid colours.

Supplied by Florida-based HMS Group, the all-IP-rated gear dramatically changes the white façade of the studio come nightfall.

Five Ilumipanel 48 IP and four Ilumipanel 28 IP wash lights colour the five-story tower and illuminate the front wall of the building.

‘Ilumipanel 28 IP does a great job at packing a sizeable punch of colour in a compact and aesthetically pleasing case,’ said product marketing manager for Iluminarc, Ben Dickmann.

‘Also, full RGB colour mixing puts an entire palette of colours in the designer’s hands.’

Six Ilumipod 7 IP fixtures provide depth to an integral water fountain. ‘Ilumipod 7 IP was specifically designed for low profile, colour-changing applications,’ explained senior product manager, Ford Sellers. ‘It also features a rugged IP67 housing, with an integrated glare-hood, which makes this a fantastic choice for situations like this, where discretion and subtlety keep the focus on the incredible architecture.’

The Lighting Hospital Europe’s only independent electronic service department for the professional lighting industry - has moved to new expanded premises in Bristol.

This has enabled further streamlining of its processes to offer a faster service for damaged lighting equipment needing urgent treatment.

The success of the operation, launched in 2009 by industry engineer, Dik Welland, has been built on the fast turnarounds, friendly and efficient service, attention to detail and the quality of the repairs.

‘We pride ourselves on the excellent recovery rate,’ smiled Welland. The Lighting Hospital space now comprises more than 2500 sq ft dedicated to the repair of lighting fixtures of all types, electronic ballasts and moving light control boards as well as lighting consoles.

Welland and his team of engineers and technicians have honed their skills to deal with the specific nature of certain ‘standard’ repairs that are encountered day-to-day, and extended the scope of their work as the business has become more established.

With his extensive industry knowledge, from the start Welland geared the ‘hospital’ to work in line with touring and live show schedules.

The concept of urgency of repair requirements is fully understood, together with the stress and pressure involved, and the need for all repaired items to be returned to the right places. This has been one of the elements contributing to the company’s rapid growth.

LRC ANNOUNCES DATES

The US-based Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will hold three institutes this autumn for industry professionals, each to be held at the LRC in Troy, New York.

The events will be held on 10-12 September, 8-9 October, and 16-17 October.

The first is a three-day seminar that teaches professionals how to incorporate LEDs and OLEDs into lighting applications.

The workshop includes more time for industry professionals to participate in hands-on sessions. LRC experts help participants learn about these quickly evolving solid-state lighting technologies in a small classroom setting.

The early October photometry institute is on the latest

developments in photometric testing and evaluation, including new testing requirements for solid-state light sources and systems.

The final seminar concentrates on outdoor lighting, and teaches how to effectively design, specify, and commission energy-efficient installations for a variety of locations, including streets and road, parking areas, parks, and pedestrian areas.

LIFE ON THE OCEAN WAVE Nautical but nice lighting for messing about on boats

ur word ‘posh’ (referring to the cabin of choice for 19th Century ship’s travellers, ‘port out, starboard home’) is still very much a fitting term for today’s travellers on the high seas. In the spirit of honesty (is it just me, or does that sound like the name of a large, ocean-going vessel?), I’ve never been into the whole cruising thing – all those posh frocks (that word again), and being told who to share your table with, what time to eat, not to mention not having enough room to swing a cat in the bedroom - sorry, cabin.

However, I can see the allure – entertainment on tap, 24-hour a day eateries, a new port every morning, a climbing wall (honestly, I’ve seen the advert), dedicated staff to keep the small people entertained and out of mummy’s hair while she swings numerous cats around her miniscule cabin ...

So, while it’s not for me, looking at the way designers approach lighting on both cruise ships and slightly smaller, but no less grand vessels is fascinating – after all, how do they plug the ship in to re-charge overnight?

Mark Blythe, CEO of Lietcorp and its green marine lighting sister company, OceanLED and a bit of a sailor himself, explained how it all works: ‘There are two things to consider when designing a [marine] lighting scheme. Firstly, not affecting hull integrity: whenever cutting holes or adding to a hull’s structure, its integrity can be affected. It is important to work closely with both the yacht manufacturer and the relevant approval body, to work within the parameters se by the hull design.

This can often dictate light spacing, which must be considered when proposing products and effects.

‘Secondly, the angle of the beam in the water: during the proposal process, we work with the yard to understand the desired lighting effect.

‘We then design this on to the hull profile, detailing each light on each relevant frame. It is at this stage that we try to get all of the products projecting from the ship at the ultimate angle. We believe this to be 20 degrees, which will prevent the light beams from penetrating the surface and creating glare, and will help force as much light through the water as possible.’

So what about the environment – does it play a part in the design and specification process?

‘Knowing how harsh the marine environment can be, we use the highest grade metals available, for underwater lighting products,’ explained Blythe. ‘This ranges from top quality aluminium bronze, (generally utilised for propellers and hull units), and when welding into a metal hull, we use stainless steel and aluminium cofferdams, made from superior grade metals to the hull, to avoid any corrosion issues.’

The Aida fleet is one of the largest currently plying its trade on the high seas, and the tenth member, the 1097-berth (bedrooms to me), Aidastella was inaugurated in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany this spring.

‘Cruise ships, with their complex range of demands, are in reality lighthouses for lighting applications,’ commented Martin Nüboldt of Osram, who was responsible for the project. ‘As one of the leading providers of maritime lighting, we are highly pleased to provide light for the Aidastella.’

In order to provide full brilliance to the aptly-named ‘star’, Osram equipped a number of areas with specific lighting: 9,000 halogen eco lamps and 1,200 metres of flexible LED modules provide both white and coloured

Cruise ships, in terms of lighting are highly demanding, as in addition to careful control of energy consumption, bringing together the various types of lighting applications in such a restricted space makes for difficult decisions, and the occasional compromise. High expectation is placed on the quality and atmosphere of lighting in the cabins and public areas, including restaurants, bars, on-board shops, and also of course in the sports and wellness areas. Because power has to be generated on board, focus is also placed on energy efficiency.

The grand dame of cruise ships, the Saga Sapphire (can I assume stunning holiday accommodation for lots of lovely people of a certain vintage, all wearing beatific smiles?) underwent a re-design and re-fit in Palermo at the end of last season.

As part of its transformation, an evocative statement Scabetti ‘Shoal’ fitting was commissioned for the main atrium. The stunning stainless steel sculpture is a staggering 29ft high, and features no less than 1,400 shimmering, shining, steel fish.

using bone china’. The use of sprung stainless steel was a conscious design decision, as the curvature applied to the mirror-polished bodies of the fish added a degree of realism and visual interest, especially when lit. Spanning three decks, the eight-metre shoal of fish elegantly circles the main atrium. The fish were threaded onto suspended stainless steel cables before being tensioned by a system beneath the banquette at the base of the sculpture.

‘As the ship travels the ocean, forces applied to the hull by rough seas cause the space between decks to fluctuate,’ explained Frances Bromley. ‘This had to be taken into account during the design process.’ The design team was able to anticipate this and used stainless steel to produce a reliable tensioning system that would last the life of the sculpture without requiring maintenance.

Creative duo, Dominic and Frances Bromley have created bespoke lighting and sculptural installations for clients worldwide. Based in the Staffordshire Moorlands, much of the pair’s portfolio utilises fine bone china, crafted in the famous local potteries. More recently however, stainless steel has come to the fore as a key feature of their commissioned installations; particularly those located in environments unsuitable for china.

After being approached to create large sculptural installations for both a harbourside restaurant in the Seychelles, and the cruise liner, Saga Sapphire, it was clear the designers required a material solution that was both lightweight and suitable for use in marine environments.

Stainless steel was the obvious choice. ‘We identified sheet stainless steel as a material ideally suited for scenarios where materials we had previously used were simply not suitable; environments such as the cruise ship, where it was important to keep weight to a minimum, whilst also being able to withstand constant vibration and the threat of rough seas,’ explained Scabetti founder, Dominic Bromley.

PCM(photo-chemical machining) was the process utilised to create the sculptural elements – in this case, a stylised fish shape that would be repeated to create large shoal formations. British-made sprung stainless steel sheet was specified for both commissions; the marine grade material eliminating any concerns about the longevity of the sculptures in salt‐rich environments.

Frances Bromley commented: ‘PCM was the ideal process to produce the fish. we were able to apply a fantastic level of surface detail to the stainless steel to produce incredibly strong and resilient sculptural forms that retained the visual delicacy evoked by our work

With luxury yacht sales buoyant despite the global economic downturn, Greek ship builder SN Dassiras has completed the latest in a line of state-of-the-art yachts, Variety Voyager. The 66m luxury super-yacht has 36 cabins for up to 72 passengers as well as berths for up to 32 crew. From the outset, the owner wanted Variety Voyager to have a warm and inviting interior that ensured the ultimate in relaxing holiday experiences for guests.

As well as combining a cleanly lit, minimalist scheme in the public areas with luxurious, warmly lit cabins, the owners wanted the lighting scheme to be as energy efficient as possible and require minimal maintenance.

To complement Lally Poulias’ interior scheme, a series of lighting fixtures were sourced by local design duo, Mallios and Tsoukatou, producing an end result that is the ultimate in contemporary, energy efficient chic.

Antonis Maravelias, electrical engineer at Technomare Technology, marine custom integration specialist for the project, explained further: ‘Working closely with Lally Poulias and the fixture designers, we had to keep in mind the owners’ requirements for a warmly lit space that was energy efficient, with lighting that was easy to maintain. Having used Megaman lamps on other yachting installations, they were the obvious choice as the light quality is a true replacement for the warmth that we are used to from halogen light sources. In addition, the reflector technology means that there is no glare from the lamps and their strong construction means that they are built to last.’

To maintain the clean lines within the yacht’s public and private spaces, Mallios and Tsoukatou designed all of the bespoke fittings to lie flush with Variety Voyager’s walls and ceiling, adding illuminated glass murals in the main salon area for additional illumination. The scheme includes 800 LED PAR16 7W, GU10, warm white reflectors with 35-degree beam angle, throughout the corridors and cabins, each delivering 600 cd of beam power. An additional 150 dimmable LED PAR16 7W, GU10 lamps with 15-degree beam angle, plus 180 LED PAR 16 7W, GU10 dimmable lamps have been used in the restaurant and bar areas, while a further 80 LED AR111 15W, GU10 lamps were used throughout the terrace areas. Thanks to the close working relationship between all parties, the end result is a luxurious yacht that combines beautiful aesthetics with the latest in energy lamp technology to provide significant energy efficiency - beautifully.

Maybe there’s something in this cruising lark after all …

TC has proved that its Source Four fixtures aren’t just for theatre use by supplying a selection of HID luminaires to the Museu da Eletricidade - or Museum of Electricity - in Lisbon, Portugal. ‘We first worked with the museum’s managers about two years ago,’ explained Vitor Paiva, commercial director at Luzeiro, ‘when they bought tungsten Source Four luminaires. They were impressed, and asked to look at other models in the range. Key to their specification was that they needed to be low maintenance and have high light output.’

These were deemed to be such a success, that the managers ordered a further 34 fittings in order to light the World Press Photo Exhibition, which ran throughout the month of May. ‘The lighting was the subject of great acclaim,’ explained Paiva, ‘both on the part of the international organisers, and of the television companies which visited and interviewed photographers under the lights.

‘The Source Four HID fitting has a long lamp life and produces less heat per lumen output than tungsten luminaires – plus, in taking advantage of the optics, which the Source Four is renowned for, a 150W HID fixture provides an output close to that of its 575W tungsten counterpart,’ he continued.

The fixtures deliver a precisely focussed beam of light, perfectly showing off the spectacular photography on display. The exhibition, which will travel to 45 countries over the course of a year, is a display of the best photos that have appeared in print during the past year, and follows an awards ceremony in Amsterdam.

STICKING OUT A landmark Anolis lighting scheme has been installed to illuminate Melbourne’s iconic Red Sticks, an urban sculpture on CityLink.

Denton Corker Marshall’s Melbourne Gateway has been described as the ‘Mother of all architectural interventions’ on the city’s freeway. A massive 70m yellow steel beam, cantilevered at precarious angles, traverses eight lanes of freeway, and 39 elegant 30m high steel and concrete red sticks run alongside the road for almost half a kilometre. The northbound section comprises 21 sticks, set seven metres apart, while the southbound road has 18 sticks, also seven metres apart, but sited in an artificial lake.

Maintenance contractor, Transfield Services approached Anolis’ Australian partner, The ULA Group, with a brief to create a lighting design that improved the colour, light quality and ambience of the original installation. CityLink had stipulated that the lighting must have a contemporary edge, be a vastly more eco-friendly package than the previous lighting, and reduce on-going running costs to meet its sustainability principles. The revised scheme has certainly achieved that, being 80 per cent more energy efficient than its predecessor, and it ensures the installation looks fantastic for road users.

Jason Saunders project managed for ULA. ‘It is imperative that the client gets the results that are predicted to make a system change like this viable,’ he commented. Saunders specified Anolis’ ArcSource 96 LED fixture for; ‘its impressive light output, ruggedness and ability to customise the product lensing, and also the casing for vandal-resistance’.

The fitting has a maximum power consumption of 100W, compared to the previous incandescent sources, which were a hefty 1000W each. The ArcSource 96s were fitted with tough protective back plates, Anaconda cable casing and a special lens array to ensure that the light reaches exactly the right places.

Jimmie winner Luc Peumans of Painting With Light (PwL) was responsible for designing the spectacular lighting and visuals for the 2013 Jim TV Awards. ‘The Jimmies’, staged at the Ethias Arena in Belgium, celebrate some of the best musical talent in the country. Peumans was asked to come up with something eye-catching for the occasion. It’s the first time he’s been involved with the event, which features an hour of Awards broadcast live, followed by the Jimmie’s Festival – a five-hour telethon featuring the winners plus an international line up of artists - which also goes out live.

Peumans created the basic set architecture from 10 giant curved trussing arches along the back of the very wide stage.

These – together with some straight overhead trusses - made ideal hanging positions for lighting fixtures – which could reach all over the stage. The lighting was programmed and run by PWL’s Dimi Theuwissen using a grandMA2 full size console. The kit included 102 x Vari*Lite 6Cs, which are one of Peuman’s all-time favourite spot moving light fixtures. He likes its flexibility, the fast gobos, the quality of the beam and the light output. ‘There is nothing else quite like it,’ he commented. In addition, there were 28 V*L 3000 Spots and 46 x V*L3500 Washes on the rig, together with 96 x 1-cell PAR36 blinders, eight bars of 6 PAR 64s and 140 x PRG TourLED 42 LED PAR cans.

Robert Juliat spotlights, profiles and followspots have been chosen for the lighting installation following a refurbishment of the historic National Theater Vasile Alecsandri in Iaşi, Romania.

The National has recently undergone a seven-year renovation, during which time its programme of events was spread out across theatres all over Romania.

‘This disadvantage of multiple locations has transformed over time into an advantage for us,’ explained Aurel Anton, chief lighting engineer at the theatre.

‘Throughout this time, we were able to accumulate knowledge and experience from all these other theatres, which helped us to define precisely what we wanted for our newly refurbished building.’

High on the list of priorities was lighting equipment from Robert Juliat. A selection of theatre lanterns, including RJ 329 HPC 2500W and RJ 310 HPC 2500W PC, Pebble and Fresnels fixtures were installed, all of which have 200mm lenses for maximum light output. These were augmented by a large number of RJ 306 1000W Lutin PC units, which have interchangeable lenses that enable them to be transformed into Pebble or Fresnel fixtures. ‘The theatre has become a flagship, in terms of the high standard of technical equipment we offer,’ said Anton.

THE OTHER ARC Central Presentations (CPL) has supplied projection and lighting equipment for the inaugural ARC Festival, an innovative one-day event celebrating electronic music and digital arts in Bristol.

The Festival’s directors, Ben Thompson and Will Young asked CPL’s Nick Diacre to co-ordinate the supply of lighting and AV equipment.

Young designed a 20m-wide, three-m high curved screen for the event and Diacre spec’d a video system that would work in the space and environment and could be utilised by all the various artists. ‘The key

was to keep it simple, flexible, and most importantly, quick and easy to set up,’ explained Diacre.

Lighting in the main tent was designed by Will Howie, using a combination of CPL’s Martin MAC Aura LED washes, MAC 700 Spots, Atomic strobes and Molefeys – all controlled via an Avolites Pearl desk.

The lighting was operated on the fly, to

complement and contrast with the assorted visuals appearing onscreen and the general vibe of the live sets as they developed.

CPL also supplied assorted lighting kit to various other areas, including the Polygon stage, which was designed and curated by Skulpt. This included Panasonic 10K projectors, and PixelLine LED battens.

he current touring schedule for the Scandinavian contemporary circus company, Cirkus Cirkör, features the breathtaking work, Knitting Peace.

Renowned for its original, intimate, exciting and thought-provoking work, Cirkus Cirkör was Sweden’s first contemporary circus group. Under the artistic direction of Tilde Björfors, it mixes elements from street theatre, rock video, theatre, dance and film into the shows. The company, which is based in Alby, to the south of Stockholm, tours extensively worldwide.

Lighting is an integral element of Cirkus Cirkör’s shows. It’s used to emphasise the drama, the seat-edge acrobatics, and sheer physical power, emotion and aesthetics of the performance. The lighting for Knitting Peace was designed by Ulf Englund, and a number of Robe fittings – five MMX Spots and 16 LEDWash 600s – were specified for the show by him and Cirkus Cirkör’s technical producer, Stefan Karlström.

‘They are well specified lights and fitted our budget,’ said Karlström, explaining that before they made the purchase, both he and Englund had heard many good reports about the reliability of the brand, which helped cement their decision.

Additionally, they believe that using 21 Robes is a much faster, dynamic and far more practical solution than the alternative. The Robe fittings are currently the only lights on the show. They are rigged onto a custom trussing structure, which is

also used by the performers and for various props. This enables Cirkus Cirkör to be completely self-sufficient. The crew know they can arrive at any venue or performance space, and have the show area and technical performing exactly the same each time – all they need is power, and even that request is expedient using the MMXs and LEDWashes, which are extremely power efficient – designed to Robe’s ‘smallerlighter-brighter’ concept.

BUY AND SAVE

Owning its own lighting will save Cirkus Cirkör a substantial amount of money – in the past the company has hired kit for its tours, which can last between two and three years. On-the-road lighting for Knitting Peace is being co-ordinated by Fredrik Ekström, who is operating the light show using a Hog PC console. He’s also had previous experience of using Robe fixtures and said he’s really happy to have them on the tour.

The world premiere of Knitting Peace was at the La Seyne sur Mer Festival in France, and the show is now working its way round Scandinavia at the start of its touring schedule, asking the question: Can a worldwide knitting for peace movement make a difference?
