ONGI ETORRI: A FRIENDLY WELCOME IN BASQUE The Basque Country (Euskadi) consists of three provinces each with its own provincial capital. They are Vitoria-Gasteiz capital of Alava (Araba) and the Autonomous Basque Community, Bilbao (Bilbo) capital of Vizcaya (Bizkaia) and San Sebastián (Donostia) capital of Guipúzcoa (Gipuzkoa). Euskera, the ancient and mysterious language of the Basques, is widely spoken as is Spanish and street names and places are usually shown in both languages. Luckily for locals and visitors alike the Basques cherish their culture and traditions. Exciting festivals and fiestas, colourful parades and ancient sporting events happen often. Not staged for tourists rather the Basque people doing what they do the best celebrating with family and friends. Another treat is the many traditional country markets that sell delicious homegrown and home-produced foods and beverages. Delicious!

Villa Lucía Wine Center Opened in 2000 and just outside Laguardia, is a wonderful new exhibit dedicated to wine making. The complete process is carefully explained in a wine cellar museum. Guests experience a virtual wine tasting session with scale models, projections and machinery traditionally used in wine production. Afterwards visitors can browse and purchase from a fine collection of wines. There is also a beautiful garden in which to relax.
Bodega El Fabulista Subterranean wine cellar Laguardia is the birthplace of famous Spanish fable writer, Félix María Sánchez Samaniego. Six metres beneath his historic home, a 17th C palatial mansion, are a truly unique subterranean bodega and wine cellar. It will be opened to the public in late 2000 and Totally Spain is very pleased to be one of the first companies to offer visits here. For small groups we can also arrange dining and wine tasting in this historical underground setting.
