Dear readers,

RACHEL TSAO Editor in Chief

HANNAH CHEW Digital Media Director

The term “mental health is too often strictly associated with established conditions like depression, but it is in fact interweaved within many aspects of our lives. Our mental state can be affected by nearly everything we do, whether it be frantically cramming for an exam or wrapping ourselves in a cozy blanket while reading our favorite book. With our new zine, we hope to honor the unique voices of college students by sharing and bringing their most intimate and vulnerable stories to life through a collection of photos and words. By illustrating the diverse ways in which mental health manifests in our day-today lives, we aim to empower our readers to destigmatize this topic. We are so proud to present to you From Within, the first photography zine by UCLA Total Wellness. With love, Rachel, Hannah, and Kristy

KRISTY LIN Digital Media Director

“I have mixed anxiety–depressive disorder (MADD), so I display symptoms of anxiety and depression. I participate in guided breathing at the Botanical or Sculpture garden and it really helps me. Lastly, remember you are not alone. Be patient and let others help you because it really takes a village to get through it.”

TO BE

ANXIOUS... CREATED BY: ELEANOR PAE

“Sometimes I struggle to get out of bed, even to take a sip of water. The only feeling my body musters is this small ball of anxiety. It’s hardly debilitating, but all I can do is lay in bed feeling empty with nothing but my thoughts. I only hope that one day I’ll be enough for myself.”

“When I was younger, I had social anxiety and would shut down before I had a class presentation. I overcame my anxiety and learned how to be confident and love myself in the process.”

IT IS HARD TO LEARN TO APPRECIATE YOUR BODY WHILE STILL ENJOYING FOOD. OFTEN TIMES, FREQUENT EXERCISE AND OBSESSIVE CALORIE COUNTING COME ABOUT IN THE PROCESS.

BODY EXPECTATIONS SURROUNDING

the life of a foodie CREATED BY: BY: RACHEL LEE

As a “foodie,’’ I spend an immense amount of time scrolling through my Instagram feed looking at food posts and connecting with fellow food photographers. While the “foodie” culture is typically inclusive, it seems that there’s a consciousness of body image that is inevitably linked to it. There’s a certain perception that “foodies” have a gluttonous appetite and thus, lead relatively unhealthy lives when it comes to their diet. This negativity surrounding body image truly spoils the community’s supportive culture. Body shaming individuals for a love of food is as unhealthy as it seems, often leading to a mentality that doesn’t promote an unconditional love of the body. Ultimately, it’s important to reaffirm a sense of body positivity within the “foodie” culture before we find ourselves embarking on an irreversible path of negativity.
