I
’m not one to predict the weather or dictate the seasons, but I can say, with some certainty, that summer is finally here. I’m not sure spring ever started or ended. All I know is there was snow outside my window, and then it was 85 degrees soon after. Believe me, I’m not complaining. I’m also not complaining about finally being able to indulge in one of my favorite summertime activities of outdoor dining. The sidewalks come alive with tables and chairs, as well as winter-weary folks who just crave to chill outside with frosty cocktails in their hands. After the winter we endured, we’ve earned it! The fair weather time is also perfect for exploring some of Bergen County’s great shopping destinations: our downtowns. Only a year ago, a small boutique called Maci debuted on Westwood’s booming main street. Opened by the young and beautiful Ejona Maci, this trendy boutique is bringing a hip vibe to Westwood Ave. While finally able to sit outside and not freeze, we decided to stroll to City Place, right in Edgewater, and check out some of the dining and shopping options there. What we came back with were pages full of this summer’s best looks. From gorgeous rompers to long f lowing maxi dresses, summer 2014 fashion is filled with the brightness and energy that can beat back any blizzard—unless it’s from Dairy Queen. Yum! Speaking of ice cream, Benny’s of Fair Lawn is getting ready to open a soft serve paradise of its own, just a few doors down from the booming luncheonette. Benny’s, a neighborhood staple, may be under new ownership, but with a commitment to great food and staying true to tradition, the restaurant is only getting better. As you lounge at the beach and poolside this summer we hope you continue to enjoy opening up any of our magazines for a nice relaxing read. Whether it’s learning about some of Bergen County’s interesting people and their stories or seeing friends of yours in the many “people pages,” we aim to continue dishing out the best of Bergen County to you for years to come. Happy summer!

Oh, baby! 21 private maternity rooms as new as me!
I didn’t think anything could impress mom as much as me. But 21 new, private maternity rooms really made her smile. (Apparently, your own huge bathroom is a really big deal when you’re not in a diaper.) There’s even a sleeper sofa for dad. As for me, I am drooling over the new hospital nursery. It gets my stamp of approval, with fancy equipment to help keep me safe and sound. Call to schedule a free tour: 201.894.3727

Exploring Terroir Identifying what gives a wine its personality These days, everyone from tequila producers to chocolatiers discusses the influence of “terroir,” but it all began with wine. The French concept reflects how the complex interaction of soil characteristics, slope, drainage, microclimates and even the peccadillos of the winemaker comes into play to influence the subtleties of the finished wine. Recently, some of France’s top winemakers gathered in New York City, courtesy of Pasternak Wine Importers, to discuss the significance (or not!) of terroir on their wines.
2012 Le Domaine Saget Pouilly-Fumé (Loire Valley)
2010 Chateau La Nerthe Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge (Rhone Valley)
2013 Domaine de la Perriere Sancerre (Loire Valley)
2010 Les Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) Reserve Speciale Pauillac (Bordeaux)
“Our vineyards are characterized by their Kimmeridgian soil,” says Arnaud Saget, general manager of Saget La Perrière. Perhaps the most famous “wine soil” on earth, its high shell-andlimestone content means “you can not avoid minerality in the wine. Acidity becomes the structure for our wine.”
The squat, pernicious century-old vines at Chateau La Nerthe struggle valiantly in the typical terroir of the region. All 13 varieties (red and white) allowed in C-d-P wines are grown on 225 acres of gentle slope covered in grapefruit-sized galette gravels over sandy soils.
In France, the sense of place is so central to winemaking that wines are named for their appellation, rather than the grape in the bottle: Burgundy (Pinot Noir), Chablis (largely Chardonnay) and Sancerre (mostly Sauvignon Blanc). A blend of Kimmeridgian marl, flint and fine gravels over a network of draining caves creates a clean, mineral wine, but this time with a lighter body and more floral aromatics.
“Terroir is not my goal; I blend wines across locations,” explains wine manager Diane Flamand, who focuses on creating an identity worthy of the label’s famous heritage. “But Pauillac means something to us.”
For Saget, maturity, both of the grape and during the aging process, is key to truly expressing the grape’s terroir. The 100% Sauvignon Blanc white is dry but full-bodied, and richly aromatic with notes of grapefruit, lemon, wood and dry slate. This is an excellent summer selection to serve with crab, shellfish or hard cheeses, walnuts and apples. $35
“The soils help with the maturity of the grapes,” notes winemaker Christian Voeux, who blends modern science with La Nerthe’s 450-year-old heritage. The red—a blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault—is a deep purple, aromatic with spice and berry fruit, and beautifully balanced on the palate. Pair with slow-roasted beef or braised oxtail in a shallot wine sauce. $60
This wine, an excellent expression of Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc, also boasts tremendous aging potential, even in bad years. However, 2013 proved a very nice year indeed. Try with butter-braised lobster over orzo and leeks. $25
The vines around the namesake village create quintessential Bordeaux wines, and Flamand says, “I benefit from the beautiful terroir of Lafite,” which makes up 60% of this 2010 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The classic, deep crimson expression boasts vanilla, cinnamon, mocha and plum on the nose, and fine, silky tannins and a medium finish on the palate. The wine goes great with braised or grilled lamb and fava beans. $56

Cindy Grogan A Look Beyond the Curtain
Down-to-earth, funny and practical, this “sensible psychic demystifies the afterlife.

Cindy Grogan on Death, Dying and Lots of Other Otherworldly Stuff “Over the years, I’ve been asked the same 25 or so questions about death, dying and the Other Side. Last summer, I decided to put it all down on paper,” explains psychic/medium Cindy Grogan, the author of the self-published OK, So You’re Dead: A Sassy Guide to the Afterlife. “Unlike many books on the subject, mine is pretty lighthearted. I cover everything from what it feels like to die to reincarnation, guardian angels and even what happens to pets on the Other Side.” In the excerpt below, Grogan offers her no-nonsense and often humorous take on the afterlife. Remember that awesomely cheesy show, Star Trek? Remember how the characters would look when they “beamed” somewhere via the Transporter? The death process is kinda like that. Essentially, when we die, we just transition to finer bits of energy. Random Physics Lesson #1: everything is energy. From the chair you sit in, to the plants in your yard, your hamster, you. Some big brain—I think it was Einstein—said that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. So do you really think that the energy which makes a loved one who they are, in all their unique Sunday-dinner-making, pet-loving, karaoke-belting splendor just vanishes? Not according to Einstein. And I’m not about to get into a scientific throwdown with that guy. As humans, our energy “vibrates” at a very slow, dense rate (and let’s just say it: some people are denser than others). Think of a box fan: when the fan is off, you can clearly see the blades. When you turn it on, they move so fast that they appear to meld into one. It’s still a box fan, the blades are still there—but it appears very differently. This is the essential difference between human and spirit form. Getting back to Star Trek, there’s an episode where a race of aliens have evolved to where they move super-fast. In fact, they’re so fast, they can’t be seen, just heard, like a buzzing fly (if you want to watch it on YouTube, it’s called In the Wink of An Eye. And yes, Captain Kirk gets this girl, too. Such a player.) The alien state depicted is not too removed from what happens when we cross over (minus the tacky silver suits). We just evolve into a faster-moving energy—still keeping much of our personality and a spirit body that’s familiar to us. I understand from Spirit that this “body” is really just a reference point, a way to give us some context to this new state of being. Eventually, we grow accustomed to the notion of just being “energy” and don’t need to cart it around. We meld in and out of the universal source. We may occasionally show that “body” to those still here in order that they might recognize our presence, but outside of that, we’re free of physical limitations.
Continued on pg. 44
The book is available in paperback for $8.95 from Amazon; Kindle and Nook versions are also available for $3.95. For more on Grogan and her book, visit thesensiblepsychic.com

Linda’s List
HELLOOOO, TENAFLY! R U ready for your “Tenafly ME” day!
F
irst stop: the old railroad station, which is now Café Angelique. Located in the center of this quaint and charming town, Café Angelique has been serving up their delicious food and amazing pastries to Tenaf ly residents for years. After a late night, which started with Palmer’s Crossing Happy Hour, a chamomile tea and sugar-free berry scone is exactly what the doctor ordered. After my light breakfast, I’m off to go meet my mixed doubles team at the Tenaf ly Racquet Club. Who knows, I might even see tennis player Christopher Pucci, the only tennis pro who made me cry when my addiction to the game began. A quick little story: I got so frustrated at the net that I walked off the court and started to cry. Christopher said, “Get back on this court, Linda.” And, of course, I did. And the rest is history: I’ve hardly wanted to leave! The score of our game today: 6-3, 4-6. Ya win some, ya lose some. Now I am off to Orogo to see the latest Ernest Borel watch from his Cocktail Collection. It is to die for. Orogo has the most exquisite jewelry too. And what’s a new watch without a new handbag? I walk directly across the street to see my good friend Simona, who is hysterical! Her unique eye for fashion is a true gift. MINT, Simona’s high-end consignment shop, houses Chanel, Gucci and Louis Vuitton, to name just a few. Today my ME gift is a Chanel bag. I’ve worked up quite an appetite, and my new watch is screaming to me that it is lunchtime. I walk next store to Brasserie, a charming little café-type restaurant and indulge in a grilled chicken salad. It may sound boring, but I assure you it’s nothing short of delicious. While there I couldn’t leave without trying the crepes. I definitely made the right decision. The perfect town for window-shopping, Tenaf ly is easily walkable, and you’ll always run into people you know. The stores are almost all full and the streets are lively. Although there isn’t much going on at night, during the day, it is just as charming as any other downtown in Bergen County. As the hour hand on my watch creeps toward “happy,” I walk over to Axia Taverna. I like to sit at the bar here. I order my favorite Greek wine, Restina, and nibble on the assorted olives. After my long day of shopping, this is a perfectly relaxing moment—a perfect end to another great day. See you next time, BC! Linda Barba is out and about every day of the week! Have something cool for her to check out? Just let us know! Email info@bcthemag.com with “Linda’s List” as the subject. Also, check out her daily postings at facebook.com/bcthemag

Maci Moves to Main Street One of Westwood’s newest gems, this boutique and its dynamic young owner are bringing a sophisticated and edgy style to town.
I
t is a known fact that there is something quaint about the shops on Westwood Avenue. The area attracts some of the classiest and trendiest entrepreneurs, from boutiques and restaurants to candy stores and jewelry stores. Most importantly, these stores remain on the avenue for years to come, showcasing success in its truest form. Maci, one of Westwood’s newest boutiques, joins this group of select stores. And much of the credit for the store’s launch goes to its driven owner, Ejona Maci. Ejona embodies the qualities for a young, female entrepreneur: fearless, independent and passionate. She lives and works by the strong values that have helped her achieve accomplishments in the earliest days of her career. Even more impressive is her genuine 54
July/August 2014
personality, which shines through when she talks about her love for her job and the happiness it brings her. Ejona got her start in the fashion industry at the age of 5 as a model; by the age of 14 she was working in retail. Since then, it has always been a dream of hers to open a boutique, but she never imagined it would happen so quickly. She certainly owes much of her success to the disciplined work ethic she developed at a young age, accepting every opportunity she was offered while balancing school and work. Her diversified experience has given her an edge—and a confidence—not many others in the industry can say they possess. “If I wasn’t where I was right now, I would be disappointed,” says the self-assured young dynamo.
Mayor John Birkner Jr. and Ejona
Once Ejona acted on her vision, Maci became a reality in just two months. Ejona envisioned Maci for the woman seeking to look her best and who likes dressing differently. To make her customers’ shopping experience as enjoyable and effortless as possible, Ejona makes sure to carry a variety of items in one central location. The goal: to provide women with “the best of everything,” clutter-free and unique pieces that you cannot find at the mall. They’re the kind of things that Ejona observed when shopping in places like Hoboken. Shopping at a store like Maci is a significantly more convenient alternative to traveling to New York or downtown Hoboken, and it’s certainly way more fun and personal than online shopping. Offering a great customer experience is a key Maci trademark. It is important to
Ejona that Maci holds “the nicest staff on the block” reputation. A compliment like that tells Ejona that she has done something right. Much like herself, all of the employees she hires have an interest in the fashion industry, so they care about their work and create a positive, welcoming environment. Maci caters to a wide variety of customers, but if Ejona had to sum them up as one, it would be “a woman who is different, classy, sophisticated and with an edge.” Passion powers Ejona’s work philosophy. “I think my biggest accomplishment is that I get up every morning and I look forward to going to work,” she notes. “If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be happy for the majority of my life. “The secret to life is knowing that what you think, what you believe, you can make it happen,” she continues. And like a true entrepreneur, Ejona will never stop growing her business. After only a year of owning her boutique, she already has plans for a private label and eventually more store locations. “I don’t like the idea of being safe. I always want to be on the move, with something to work towards,” Ejona emphasizes. No matter how big the business gets, there’s one thing Ejona is certain of: “I will always do my own buying because it’s my favorite part. Some people hand those things off to somebody else, but then they give up their passion.” Ejona attends trade shows, visits showrooms and feels the fabrics so that everything hand-selected in the store gets her seal of approval. She pays close attention to the trends and includes brands that she loves. Even as she expands her business, you can count on Ejona to always remain hands-on and motivated. The boutique is just the beginning for this enterprising businesswoman. As many other people her age struggle to find “their calling,” Ejona Maci has discovered true success in following and realizing her dreams.

The Year of
Tommy John
Surgery Everything you ever wanted to know about this surgical operation of the ligament, but were afraid to ask...
B
aseball analysts everywhere are calling this the year of Tommy John surgery. As of early May, only two months into the 2014 season, almost 20 pitchers had either undergone the procedure or were about to have it performed. Compare that to the years between 2000 and 2011 when baseball averaged only 16 surgeries for the entire season. This raises several burning issues. First, what is Tommy John surgery? What does it treat? Is the injury preventable? Finally, is this something only important to baseball players and other athletes, or is it something that also should concern the average individual? Tommy John surgery, more properly known as ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction of the elbow (or UCL), is a sur-
gical operation in which a ligament in the medial side (inner side) elbow is replaced with a tendon from elsewhere in the body (often from the forearm, hamstring or foot of the patient) or with a donated tendon from a cadaver. The procedure is common among collegiate and professional athletes in several sports, most notably baseball. The procedure was developed, and first performed, by the late Dr. Frank Jobe in 1974 for pitcher Tommy John, for whom the surgery is named. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the procedure. The injury results from repetitive use of the elbow during the violent motions involved with throwing a baseball. In the surgery the new tendon is implanted and woven in a figure-eight pattern through holes
drilled in the humerus and ulna bones. The operation has been compared to replacing a torn, frayed shoelace with a new one. The important difference is that there are no eyelets waiting to have the new lace strung through them; the holes have to be drilled into the two bones above and below the elbow. A torn elbow ligament was the most common cause of what was simply called “dead arm injury during most of the 20th century. Before Dr. Jobe’s pioneering work 40 years ago, this was a career-ending injury for a pitcher or any throwing athlete. While the hurt player would still be able to perform day-to-day movements, he would never again be able to throw with significant force or speed. An ulnar collateral ligament injury does not interfere with non-throwing Continued on pg. 88 July/August 2014

activities or even most exercises. So, this is not an operation that most of us will ever need to continue to perform our daily activities. However, knowledge of the injury and its causes will help to prevent the injury in adult recreational athletes and young athletes just starting on their careers. At the time of the first operation, Jobe put John’s odds of returning to pitch at 1 in 100. After his 1974 surgery, John spent 18 months rehabilitating his arm, returning for the 1976 season. He would go on to pitch in the major leagues until 1989, when he was 46 years old. The chances of a complete recovery after the modern surgery are estimated at 85 to 90 percent. Rehabilitation takes around 12 to 15 months for pitchers and about 6 months for position players. At the time of Jobe’s death, in the spring of 2014, it was reported that a third of major league pitchers had had the surgery. During the 2000s, an average of 16 major league pitchers underwent the procedure each year. There was then a record 36 such operations performed in 2012. UCL injuries are usually first treated with conservative (non-surgical) therapies.
88
July/August 2014
They include: rest, ice, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and physical therapy, which strengthens surrounding muscles to compensate for the injured UCL. Tommy John surgery is most commonly recommended for athletes who don’t respond to non-surgical treatments and want to resume strenuous overhead or throwing activities. It is not uncommon for pitchers to throw harder after the surgery than they did before the injury. However, these results may not be due to the surgery itself; many attribute the beneficial results to the rigorous post-surgery rehabilitation. Since baseball pitchers believe they can throw harder after Tommy John surgery than they did before, orthopedic surgeons have reported that parents of young pitchers requested that the procedure be done on their uninjured sons in the hopes this will increase their performance. However, many people—including Dr. Frank Jobe, the doctor who invented the procedure—believe any post-surgical increases in performance are most likely due to the increased stability of the elbow joint and pitchers’ increased attention to their
fitness and conditioning. Tommy John surgery should never be performed as a performance enhancement on an uninjured elbow. Another common myth is that the injury happens suddenly, the result of overuse one day or of plain bad luck. In fact, tests performed on pitchers indicate that the ligament becomes frayed over years of abuse, starting in youth baseball, until it becomes frayed and weakened and eventually snaps. Anyone can get an UCL injury from repetitive stress to the elbow or from trauma. But throwers have the highest risk. That’s because throwing motions that twist and bend the elbow put extreme stress on the ligament. Over time, the UCL can develop tiny or large tears, or the ligament stretches and lengthens to the point where it can’t hold the bones tightly enough during throwing activities. While many authorities have suggested that an athlete’s style of throwing, or the type of pitches they throw are the most important factors determining their likelihood of sustaining an injury to the ulnar collateral ligament, the results of a 2002 study suggest that the total number of pitches thrown
is actually the greatest determinant. A 2002 study examined the throwing volume, pitch type and throwing mechanics of 426 pitchers, aged 9 to 14, for one year. Compared to pitchers who threw 200 or fewer pitches in a season, those who threw 201-400, 401600, 601-800, and 800+ pitches faced an increased risk of 63%, 181%, 234%, and 161%, respectively. The types of pitches thrown showed a smaller effect; throwing a slider was associated with an 86% increased chance of elbow injury, while throwing a curveball was associated with an increase in pain. There was only a weak correlation between throwing mechanics perceived as “bad” and the likelihood of injury. Therefore, although there is a large body of other evidence that suggests mistakes in throwing mechanics increase the likelihood of injury, it seems that the greater risk lies in the volume of throwing in total. Research into the area of throwing injuries in young athletes has led to age-based recommendations for pitch limits for young athletes. Presently, there are strict rules in place at all levels of youth baseball that limit the number of pitches a young athlete can throw per game and per week. Many young pitchers circumvent these limits by pitching in multiple leagues. So it is important that parents are aware of the long- and shortterm risks of overuse and work to protect their young athletes, not push them to an early end to their careers. Before 1997, only 12 percent of Tommy John patients were younger than 18. By 2005, that number had risen to 33 percent. An 18-year-old’s bones and cartilage are softer than those of an adult, making the former’s bones more susceptible to trauma. Pitchers younger than 12 years old have an added worry: potentially damaging the sensitive, developing tissue in their arm joints. Injuries to these growth plates have become widespread enough for doctors to coin the term “little leaguer’s elbow.” Many sports medicine experts think that increasing education is one way to prevent such injuries. Dr. Michael Gross, founder/director of Active Orthopedic and Sports Medicine, is section chief of sports medicine and orthopedic director of the Center for Sports Medicine at HackensackUMC as well as medical director of Active Center for Health and Wellness.

14 & Hudson
457 Piermont Avenue, Piermont, NY (845) 680-0014 // 14andhudson.com
Husband and wife team (and Harrington Park residents) Chef Eric Woods and Paula Clemente Woods opened 14 & Hudson this past May. Chef Woods, who’s been executive chef at Blue Fin (W Hotel NYC) since 2005, has crafted a menu of New American bistro dishes with a few “twists.” Paula will be running the front of house operations, using her experience at some of NYC’s finest restaurants like Jean Georges, Gotham Bar, and Grill and Icon. She explained that they are “committed to food and hospitality,” which is at “the core of everything” they plan to do. Early on, Chef Woods’ mother instilled in him the importance of cooking with fresh vegetables and fruits. Not surprisingly, 14 & Hudson will be committed to supporting local farms in the Hudson Valley and Central New Jersey. Chef Woods will also be working with the same purveyors he’s been using over the last 20 years, including Pat LaFrieda (and their custom burger blend), Blue Island Shellfish, Gotham Seafood and Rockland Bakery. The 4,500-square-foot space features a long bar and dining room on the first floor. The space, with an intimate 85 seats, is updated with warm woods, ambient lighting and seating designed for comfort, while the outdoor patio offers seating that overlooks the streets of Piermont and an upstairs private event space is available for parties and celebrations. Some dishes include: Sweet Chili & Black Pepper Chicken Wings, Oysters and Clams (on the half shell), Baked Goat Cheese, Homemade Potato Chips smothered with Bleu Cheese, Calamari with Hot Cherry Pepper remoulade, as well as some seafood, chicken and steak options. The bar offers both classic and signature cocktails, and a wide selection of craft beers on tap. With the Woods’ working closely with a local wine director, expect a great selection there as well. 14 & Hudson will be open every day for lunch and dinner with brunch on Sunday.

S. Egidio
17 North Broad St., Ridgewood S. Egidio, the pizzeria serving pizza Napoletana or Neapolitan-style pizza has opened in Ridgewood. Owners Tim Hanley and Rocco Trisolini have imported a handbuilt pizza oven (wood for the fuel) from Naples, with their handpicked Chef Francesco Curci (who’s come to the U.S. from Italy just to cook). Their goal is to provide an “authentic Italian experience” for their guests. The menu includes homemade pizza, imported Italian salumi and cheese, hot and cold apps, salads, and imported Italian coffee and homemade desserts. The pizza menu will include 12 choices, which will be 12-inch pies, and will be comprised of their homemade mozzarella and a variety of other fresh ingredients. Each pie is cooked at 900 degrees and made with dough prepared over 72 hours with “00” flour, Sicilian sea salt, water and “mother dough” leavening agent. The salumi will be cut fresh on a manual slicer and the coffee brewed using an imported Italian press. Plus, they’ll be using the oven for more than just pizza pies, including all the breads (like their homemade foccacia) that will be used for sandwiches and other dishes. Lunch is also planned, with Hanley expressing his desire for a “chef’s table” type affair; there will be no menu, just a fixed price and a rotating menu that will be whatever Chef Francesco whips up for the day. The BYOB restaurant has 30-40 seats and is open now for lunch with plans for dinner coming soon. Open 6 days (closed Monday) and brunch-only on Sundays.
Rony’s Rockin’ Grill 83 N. Washington Ave, Bergenfield
(201) 665-4755
If you were a fan of Rony’s Rock Burger in Glen Rock, here’s some exciting news: Owner Rony Alvarado, who closed the burger shop last April, is returning with a new restaurant in Bergenfield called Rony’s Rockin’ Grill, which is replacing the casual Mexican spot La Batalla. Alvarado brought over the entire menu from Glen Rock, plus some additions like classic chicken sandwiches, veggie burgers and turkey burgers. New to this location: full breakfast service on the weekends. You don’t go to Rony’s and not have one of their famous burgers. Take the Pink Floyd, for instance. It’s a burger topped with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing. That’s not to your taste? Maybe you’ll like the Stevie (Wonder), a burger with American cheese, pineapple, bacon, lettuce, tomato and Rony’s signature teriyaki-based Waka sauce. The point here is: Rony’s has something for everyone. As far as the burgers go, they’ll be 6-oz. patties made from his custom blend of brisket, chuck steak and porterhouse tips, grilled on a flat top and served with a bun from The Bakery, which is located a few doors down the block. Almost everything will be made in-house—the sides (onion rings, fries, sweet potato fries), dressings and desserts. Continued on pg. 102

Riva Blue
525 Riverside Avenue, Lyndhurst (201) 896-2222 // rivabluenj.com
A new restaurant and lounge named Riva Blue opened last month in Lyndhurst. Brothers Alphonse Petracco and Dr. Lawrence Petracco are behind the exciting new restaurant, using Alphonse’s 25+ years operating Petracco and Sons deli in Nutley, where he is also the mayor. The Retro Italian and New American menu is being shepherded by Chef Robert Angelo. Previously of Michelangelo’s of Bloomfield Avenue in Newark, he comes with 30 years experience, and was critical to defining “Newark Italian cuisine” (they’ve dubbed it “Retro Italian”). The menu options are vast, with multiple variations of chicken, steak, veal and pork dishes, not to mention an array of seafood options and 12 different pasta options (with whole wheat and gluten-free variations available). The bar offers a wide assortment of beer, specialty cocktails and wines both by the glass and by the bottle. Riva Blue’s interior has been designed with two defined spaces. The restaurant and lounge area can hold up to 100 and the bar accommodates seating for 90. The modern design is a combination of reclaimed wood, exposed brick and high-end finishes. There is also a Grand Ballroom for catering and parties that holds up to 280 people. Lunch and dinner menus are offered Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am to 12:00pm. Happy Hour is Tuesday through Sunday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm and includes half-price drink specials, half-price appetizers and $10 buckets of select beer. 36 North Van Brunt Street, Englewood (201) 568-3939 // terraenglewood.com
On May 15th, 6-year-old wine bar Grand Cru in Englewood was replaced by Terra. The new restaurant is from existing owners Steve and Lisa Sotland, who also own Food for Thought in Tenafly. They’ve also brought in veteran manager Eric Murillo, who will focus heavily on what they call “guest services.” Sotland is looking to create two distinct areas in the restaurant, with the front a dedicated bar and lounge (including bar menu) and the back room as the dining room. The kitchen will continue to be overseen by Chef Jorge “Freddy” Silva, who’s been in the position for five years now. He’ll be putting out a New American menu with a Latin flair, changing the menu seasonally. Terra’s offerings will include fire-grilled pizzas, such as the Signature Terra, which is beautifully topped with wild mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, Italian fontina and a dash of truffle oil. They will also have several small plates including Kobe beef sliders and Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna, and several entrees, which will always include a few different seafood, meat and poultry options. The bar program is also being updated with a draft beer system (rotating every two weeks) and additional craft choices by the bottle (up to 23 total). As before, a large selection will be offered with 16 available by the glass. Terra will be open 7 days for dinner with valet parking available on weekends. Sunday brunch is also slated to begin soon.

The Answers are
Blowing in the Wind January
February
March
You are searching to find yourself and put back some spark in your life. Look around (perhaps on the bulletin board at work) as there is a new opportunity being offered right in front of your nose. Sometimes you have to pay attention to the obvious and not search so hard. Finding a penny here or a quarter there is an encouraging sign that urges you to move forward.
Simple answers are blowing in the wind for you lately. It’s OK to take the easy way out. Just say yes or no, and stop agonizing over every little thing. If those around you don’t understand your decision, don’t stress; it won’t be the first time. Stay out of your own way otherwise you will be cranky. You may see a rainbow. Someone is trying to help you build something new.
Go for it! Whether it’s about getting on the Internet to search for a job or a mate, stop standing and watching. Charge it up and take steps to bring a smile to your face. You may be delighted with what’s in store. The answers are there. This is the time for you to figure out the right questions to ask. Those squeaks from your car mean it’s time to get it checked.

Feisty energy these days should be working in your behalf. You seem to be doing just fine in figuring out the answers to those nagging questions. The bee buzzing does bring honey so that may signal a windfall coming your way sooner rather than later. Opportunities come in all kinds of packages; you may have to start paying attention to what is being delivered to you.
You have plenty of reasons to be excited these days. Your life has such new beginnings and expectations. You should put one foot in front of the other and start taking chances. Your efforts never go unnoticed. When the clock strikes midnight, you may feel like someone is giving you the go ahead. Keep optimistic through all the nonsense.
Winner! Winner! Guess who is coming to dinner? You should be busy with plenty of company and socializing. It’s time to be optimistic about your love life. Stop second-guessing and trust your gut. Answers are everywhere when it comes to filling up your calendar. Expect a text or a ring from someone from your past. Hearing bells will be a sign that you are wanted.

No more guessing games! Things start to become crystal clear as you proceed from existing in your head to living in your mind. Music may be where your answers are found; it will certainly get your attention! Songs will put more than a little bounce in your step; they’ll inspire you with new energy and hope. Move to the vibrant beat of life!
Don’t be so testy! Others may not have the nerve to say that to your face, but it’s the message blowing in the wind. Pay attention to words of wisdom, which can be a sign on a wall, words in a newspaper or phrases out of the mouths of babes. Time to pay attention to yourself. This will let you enjoy good times with others. Key words: timing, patience and understanding.
Bubbles, sparkles and fireworks are signs of festivities and adventures. The wind may kick up from time to time to give you a head’s up that you need to be thinking in a new direction. Changes are not as challenging as you think. Stop worrying; you are in a better place than you have been in a while. Many things will be putting a smile on your face soon; just be patient.

Discovering yourself is what the universe has in store for you. When it comes to love, keep an open mind and heart, as it will be worth it. Just remember not to stand in your own way. The true gift in life is timing. If the answers to the rest of your questions are not blowing in the wind today, they might be tomorrow.
Obstinate behavior sometimes creates stubborn lives where things never seem to move forward. Seeing a rainbow in the sky may help you realize there is still so much for you to build. Don’t be disappointed about where you are; be optimistic about where you can go. Think about your obstacles, then step over them or make them a part of your scenery.
Your bags should be packed and ready to go! Perhaps it just involves a move down the hallway at work or changing bedrooms at home. But change is inevitable, so take it in stride. Don’t hesitate and follow your heart. The pennies on the f loor will show you there is a new road you will be traveling. What you take from this is up to you. The answers are all with you.

Who Wears Short Shorts?
I
know I’m on the back end of trends, but something has been called to my attention recently: As the temperature has risen, so too, have the leg line of men’s shorts. Now I have no problem with the 1970s—mostly because I wasn’t alive—but I have to say: This is what we decided to bring back? The decade that didn’t even have a cool nickname like the Swingin’ Sixties or Naughty Nineties can’t possibly be the decade we are harkening back to for our latest fashion styles, could it? I often yearn to have lived in eras past, though I must say it was more during the romanticized times when men wore suits to do everything and Cadillacs still had cool fins. However, I guess what I get instead is seeing scrawny men’s hairy thighs. It might not be so bad if men were better prepared. I really think we just jumped into this one, and what we are left with is typically awkward tan lines and the realiza122

tion that yes, most men do skip “leg day.” I’m not sure there are rules about how high they will get, either. I wouldn’t be surprised if some men are wearing “booty shorts” soon, though I assure you, I won’t be pleased, either. I’m curious how it played out in schools across the state, as well. When I was in high school, there were occasional troublemakers who dared to wear their short shorts, too short. At the time, though, they were primarily (like 100%) females. I wonder how many boys sat in detention this past May and June for revealing too much skin? Then let’s turn our attention to men’s tank tops. When the temps turn up, I—and many, many others—like to exclaim, “sun’s out, gun’s out!” However, I’ve noticed that sometimes the holes in which we put our arms through stretch from nearly the bottom of the tank all the way to your shoulder. At that point much more than the “guns” are out, revealing what men would typically
refer to as “side boobs.” What is with our sudden desire to bare it all for everyone? Which brings me to nude beaches. Yep, New Jersey has one. It’s Gunnison Beach, which is tucked away near Sandy Hook. New Jerseyans from all counties can take a day trip down to Gunnison Beach for a day of nude beach activity, which I assume is similar to normal beach activity, but with less tan lines. And so we come full circle: Boys, head down to Gunnison Beach. Get rid of those ridiculous tan lines that sit right above your knees because, well, they haven’t been exposed to sun in 10 years (or maybe since the Seventies). Only then, should you go to the store and buy all the short shorts your big heart desires. After all, this summer it’s “skies out, thighs out.” Brandon Goldstein is associate publisher of Talk of the Town magazine and BC THE MAG Health, Beauty & Fitness.

In America, no dishwasher is quieter than a Miele
Our Quiet and Clean Guarantee means we’re confident that not only will it be the quietest dishwasher you’ve ever owned, but it will also give you the best cleaning results. While some brands claim they’re the quietest, their sound levels doubled when testing was done with dirty dishes. Only Miele’s sound levels remained unchanged whether running a clean or dirty load of dishes. That’s indisputable proof we call SoundTruth™.
