I
t’s only the beginning of summer, but the news has been awash with so many stories of both triumphant love and incredibly destructive hate. For a moment, you can put the season aside, since we know the weather doesn’t shape our society. As a wife and a mother, it pains me to even watch the news anymore. For every uplifting story there always seems to be more than one trying to bring it back down. It makes me wonder about the world we live in, and more importantly, the world our children, and (hopefully) our future grandchildren will inherit from us. I may be no spring chicken, but a woman in her 50s is potentially no longer on the back end of her life, either. I’ve been privileged to experience the world, travel to amazing places, dine at some fabulous restaurants, and watch Bergen County change year after year. These days, though, I’m troubled by one question: Is Bergen County changing for the better? I was recently out buying sandwiches at a local deli that my family frequents when I noticed the adjacent store had a “For Rent” sign in its window. This store once was a cleaner’s. Even when my son was in little league, the business was a constant sponsor, a nice little-mom-and-pop cleaner’s that seemed to withstand the test of time and fashion. Until recently, that is. Faced with the vacant store, we began to wonder. Maybe the couple retired, we hoped, spinning a romantic tale about two loving people who began a little business together years ago, cleaned everything from the denim jackets of the ’80s to the perfectly tailored suits of today, got old together, and decided it was their time to enjoy the fruits of their decades of long labor. Then we started to contemplate the starker reality: Their rent got so high that they weren’t able to be there anymore, or more bluntly, nobody wanted them cleaning their clothing anymore. Either way, it just seemed sad, with the probability of a no-personality chain store bound to take its place. I’ve seen this a lot in Bergen County in the past few years. You hear about it happening in Brooklyn and Manhattan, but the commercialization of Bergen County is rarely spoken of. Isn’t it strange to think that at one time—not that long ago—the many nearby malls that line our highways were once full of primarily small, locally owned businesses? We’ve strived for many years to tap wholly into the small business community. For starters, we are one. Secondly, we know that many of our readers own or work in small businesses themselves. There is a bit of a “For Us, By Us” mentality when we think about our several magazines. It’s the small businesses, many of whose owners we proudly call close friends now, that have always made Bergen County such a great place to be, far removed from the New York City “on to the next thing” f low. Here in BC, you have your favorite restaurants and everyone knows everyone’s name. That is a beautiful thing. These small businesses, the fabric of our communities, are what differentiate us from so many places where the big chains have taken over. Instead of Rodeo Drive, we have Westwood Ave (and so many other similar downtowns) where you can purchase lovely, quality goods and be great friends with the men and women who run the amazing boutiques, shops and restaurants. That’s why Bergen County is such an amazing place to call home. As the years go by, it’s nice to see many of these local shops remain open and thriving. They are what restore the optimism within me that Bergen County will remain a vibrant grouping of unique and f lourishing communities. We may be close to New York City, but we proudly don’t live there, and we don’t try to be the same. That’s the Bergen County way.

Wine Picks
Exploring the Wines of Northern Greece Indigenous grapes and a persevering spirit define a birthplace of wine. Evidence of wine production in Greece dates back almost to the beginnings of Greek civilization. Four hundred years before the birth of Christ, the historian Thucydides wrote, “the peoples of the Mediterranean began to emerge from barbarism when they learned to cultivate the olive and the vine.” Yet after a tumultuous 20th century filled with strife and civil war, the rest of the world is only now re-learning what Athenians have always known: Greek wines are true gems.
Alpha Estate Red SMX 2011 (Ampelia, Amyndeon PDO)
Kir-Yianni Ramnista 2010 (Naoussa PDO)
Biblia Chora Ovilos White 2013 (Pangeon PGI)
Kir-Yianni Akakies Still Rosé 2014 (Amyndeon PDO)
Greece is home to countless indigenous grape varietals far removed from classic Bordeaux strains. In the mountainous Amyndeon region (named for a cousin of Alexander the Great) in northern Greece, Xinomavro is king. The name means “acid black,” and in these sandy, high-altitude soils, it produces tannic, high-acid wine rich with herbaceous and spice notes. Here it’s blended with Syrah and Merlot (hence “SMX”) to create an introduction. “Syrah brings the main structure, Merlot offers softness and Xinomavro brings complexity to the back of the palate,” says owner/winemaker Angelo Iatridis. Pair with spiced lamb, rich grilled greens and grilled tomatoes. $38
“Like Nebbiolo, Xinomavro produces big acidity, big tannins and big structure,” says Stellios Bourtaris, winemaker and son of the founder. Estate vines grow on the slopes of Mount Vermio in Macedonia, so “a nice breeze produces big temperature changes from day to night, increasing the wine’s complexity.”
Located on a broad plain at the base of the Pangeon Hills, Ovilos’s vines sit very near the ancient city of Philippi, where wine was no doubt important to Biblical-era settlers. It’s a 50/50 blend of Semillon and Assyrtiko, a grape indigenous to Santorini, boasting bright acidity and mineral notes. On the nose, the apricot and honey pungency of Semillon melds beautifully with the citrus/mineral notes of the Assyrtiko. Despite the minerality, it is a fat, lush wine conducive to aging. Pair with kompir mandza (potato stew with onions and carrots) or tavce gravce, a hearty bean stew with chunky vegetables. $32
“Akakies” means “acacia” in Greek, referring to the trees found throughout the high-altitude Amyndeon region, about 50 miles from Noaussa. “Greek wines are very different,” says Bourtaris. “They have different aromas and they’re very food-friendly thanks to high acidity.”
This deep red, 100% Xinomavro is rich with aromatics of strawberry, pie cherry, vanilla and tomato. On the mouth, tannins are firm but lush, with a long fruit-and-spice finish. Diaporos, another label from Kir-Yianni, is a single-vineyard Xinomavro providing even more body. Pair with smoked pork stew with mushroom and tomatoes, and polenta-stuffed red bell peppers. $25
In this case, the 100% Xinomavro rosé (a combination of 85% skin contact and 15% saignée or red wine runoff) is aromatic and fruity, with notes of strawberry and forest fruits, still with a good acidity and a slightly tannic tang in the finish. Bourtaris also produces a sparkling rosé. Pair with burrata cheese and roasted red peppers, or savory mekici bread with yogurt. $16

“I
have been volunteering since I was 17 years old. Fourteen years ago I had the opportunity to start this non-profit organization so that I could open up more doors for individuals with disabilities and provide them opportunities where they can really flourish and shine, learn and grow. That’s what Camp Acorn is all about. Camp Acorn is a social program for children and adults with disabilities. The impact that I have and the ability that I have to help these individuals live life to its fullest has really made a difference in my life.”
Cathy Carisi, Ed. S.

“O
ne of the things I was the most proud of being a part of was (when) ... a man had a heart attack at the Lodi Boys and Girls Club. I was the first officer there… I came running in, saw him, and I’ve been an EMT for a while, so I started initiating CPR and the ambulance came. We ended up shocking him. And, between... me, the Lodi police and the Lodi Ambulance Corps, we were able to save his life. I still get choked up thinking about it. A year later… the guy who had the heart attack gave me a little gift. He gave me a desk clock and on the clock it said ‘Thank you for the gift of time.’”

“I
was on the bus going to New York to take dance classes, and there was a gentleman that got on the bus... He had a cane, and somebody was helping him on the bus. But, then when he got off there was nobody really there to help him navigate through the crowds and through the doors, through the escalators. So I was right there. I decided to help him. We went through the street a little bit. He was completely blind.”

“I
saw a lady fall. I actually heard her walker... I heard it fall on the ground. I didn’t think of anything. I just tried to help this lady out. She was startled when I first met her, and she explained that she was thrown out of her home. She was an older lady, but she knew exactly what was going on. Me and ...my dad, we both called for an ambulance. I heard that she is now going into a home and getting better care.”

Linda’s List Party Planning, Bergen County Style! Interior shot of Seasons
Y Office of Dr. William K. Boss
Anna Rose Floral & Event Design
Le Jardin
ou don’t need me to tell you that there are levels of partying. You can have a party, which is nice, or you can party, which is awesome. As far as I’m concerned, any reason is a good one to party. And if I were to plan my own awesome party today it would be to celebrate my fabulous ’50s as the big 6-0 is approaching at maximum speed. But enough about me; back to the party plans. The first step to Partying 101 is to enlist the services of a great event planner. Since I am an event planner, I’ll fast forward past this step. However, there are many wonderful event planners in our backyard. One that immediately comes to mind is Personal Touch, a catering and event planning service (www.ptevents.com). Personal Touch can cater and plan your party at your home or plan your event. Event planners help you to have a marvelous party so all you have to do is show up and look your divine self! The next thing on the party planning to-do list is to pick a suitable venue. You think that’s going to be easy? Think again! With so many outstanding banquet halls in Bergen County from which to choose, you’ll have a hard time narrowing down your options. It’s an especially tough call for me because I have organized numerous events at most of these banquet facilities. But with apologies to the others, this time around I’m going to choose Seasons (644 Pascack Valley Road, Washington Township) for my party venue. I know owner Jimmy K and most of his staff. The food, presentation and wait staff are all incredible. You know I like my sliders (without the bread, of course) and Season’s sliders are simply delish… I think I’ll get the seafood station and the sushi. And an ice carving with my initials is a cool way to satisfy the diva in me, don’t you agree? Do I need a theme for my party? Yes, you say. Well, since I just love my beverages and happy hours, I’m going to have a progressive happy hour with an open bar. Splendid theme idea, if I do say so myself. But time out; I need a break from all this planning. Time to carve out some “moi” time. So I’m off to get a consult from Dr. William K. Boss (305 Route 17 S, Paramus) on the rejuvenator treatment, a non-surgical approach that stimulates your skin to restore it to a more youthful experience. I don’t know about you, but I’m very interested. After all, who doesn’t want long-lasting results? I know I do! It’s a no brainer. Dr. Boss is going to help me maintain my youthful look. Thank you, Dr. Boss, and your incredible professional staff, too. The consult was explained to me in detail and I can’t wait until my first treatment! I’m so excited. Did you know Dr. Boss is one of Bergen’s top docs? Only the best for Linda B... Now that I’ve taken care of the aging process, I must make certain my grey hairs never make a cameo appearance. Just the other day my bestie Amy (you remember her; we rocked Ramsey together, and we normally eat our way through a town) said she swore I always look as if I get something done to my hair every day. Wrong, I protested. I only get something done to my tresses every other day by my small but mighty army of hair magicians at M LUX Salon (1 Riverside Square Mall, Hackensack). Greg, my colorist, works in Manhattan, but after my endless pleading makes the trip to
Linda’s List New Jersey twice a week. Just call me Lucky Lady! People—both women and men—compliment me on my hair all the time. So thanks, Greg; you’re the absolute best! I need to take a break and enjoy some lunch. As it’s a beautiful day, I head on down to Ross Dock in Edgewater. Located on the Hudson, below the GW Bridge, it has an absolutely stunning view. I would walk there because it’s downhill, but getting back up the hill is another matter… But with all this “me” time, I’m almost forgetting that I need to finish my party planning. If you read my May/June column—you did read it, right?—you’ll know who my DJ is. So I can check off DJ on my party planning to-do list. I just got off the phone with Alexa at Anna Rose Floral & Event Design (1068 High Mountain Road, North Haledon), which does exquisite work. (Good thing too, as most women love f lowers; I’m particularly partial to hydrangeas myself.) I have total faith that the folks at Anna Rose Floral & Event Design will make exceptional arrangements and I’d like lots of votives because I just think candies and f lorals create a great ambiance. OMG, I’m a very happy Linda B… I think my party plans are looking good. Time to reward myself with a beverage. Weather-wise it’s a gorgeous night, so since I lunched with an under view of the GW Bridge, now I will sip my Happy Hour beverage at eye level of the GW Bridge at Le Jardin (1257 River Road, Edgewater), the spacious outdoor bar where I prefer to sit. It’s Tuesday night, which means a live band and singles night on the patio. Oh, so you want some dating stories? Trust me, you will need multiple beverages and a lifetime for those. Ugh! Remember, while I like to sit at the bar, you don’t have to because they have plenty of table service outside and indoors at LJ. I’ve had a very productive day, wouldn’t you agree? I’m going to call it a day and head home to let the Sandman sprinkle sand in my eyes. Buona notte. See you next time. BTW by the time my next column comes out I will be a year wiser! Ciao for now…
Linda Barba is out and about every day of the week! Have something cool for her to check out? Just let us know! Email info@bcthemag.com with “Linda’s List” as the subject. Also, check out her daily postings at facebook.com/bcthemag

MOVIE PREVIEW
A
ccording to Hollywood’s calendar, summer began back on May 1, with the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the first verified warm-weather blockbuster, with an opening weekend gross of $217 million. Since then, we’ve seen the release of Pitch Perfect 2, Tomorrowland, Jurassic World, San Andreas, Ted 2, Spy and Far From the Madding Crowd. The offerings in July and August are diverse—the flaunting of beefcake, little yellow creatures looking for a leader, a comedy about changing priorities, a new superhero, a boxing film that looks into a fighter’s life beyond the ring, a coming of age story combined with mystery, a couple of big-budget spy flicks, a thriller about a creepy man from the past, and the tale of a musician/mother trying to mend fences and reconnect with family. Here are ten movies due out in July and August for your viewing pleasure:
Magic Mike XXL July 1
This sequel to 2012’s Magic Mike, which grossed over $167 million worldwide, stars Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias. Joining the cast in new roles are Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games films), Donald Glover (Community), Amber Heard (The Rum Diary), Andie MacDowell (Footloose), Jada Pinkett Smith (Gotham) and Michael Strahan (Live With Kelly and Michael). The movie picks up three years after Mike (Tatum) bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game. The other members of the Kings of Tampa are now ready to quit, but they want to go out in flamboyant fashion with one last blowout performance in Myrtle Beach, with legendary headliner Magic Mike sharing the spotlight. Heading to their final show, with stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves while shaking off the past in surprising ways.

Minions July 10
This 3D animated production begins at the dawn of time with single-celled yellow organisms called Minions. They evolve through the ages, always serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters alive, from Tyrannosaurus Rex to Napoleon, the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression. But the Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and sweet little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his fellow Minions to follow. Their journey leads them to Scarlet Overkill (voice of Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. Traveling from Antarctica to 1960s New York City, they end up in mod London, where they face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind from annihilation. Jon Hamm (Mad Men) provides the voice of Scarlet’s husband, Herb Overkill.
Trainwreck July 17
Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) directs this, his fifth feature film, written by and starring Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer) as a woman who lives her life without apologies even when an apology just might be due. Amy’s dad (Colin Quinn) has drilled into her head since she was a little girl that monogamy isn’t realistic. Now a magazine writer, Amy still lives by that precept, enjoying what she feels is an uninhibited life free from stifling, boring romantic commitment. In actuality, however, she’s in a rut. When she finds herself starting to fall for the subject of her current assignment, a charming and successful sports doctor named Aaron (Bill Hader), Amy starts to wonder if other grownups, including this guy who really seems to like her, might be onto something. Schumer started her career as a stand-up comedienne, appeared on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, co-starred on the Comedy Central reality show Reality Bites and has appeared in several TV shows since 2007. Trainwreck is the first movie Apatow has directed but not written.
Ant-Man July 17
Ant-Man originated in Marvel Comics as the superhero persona of Dr. Hank Pym, a brilliant scientist who invented a substance that allowed him to alter his size. The character was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby and first appeared in Tales to Astonish # 27. The upcoming movie changes things a bit by shifting the main focus from Dr. Pym (Michael Douglas) to his protégé, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), a master con-man who must embrace his inner hero to help Dr. Pym protect the secret behind the spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Like Tony Stark (Iron Man), Scott Lang incorporates a good deal of self-deprecating humor into the proceedings. Though Ant-Man is the tiniest of the Marvel superheroes, he increases his density and thus his strength by shrinking. He’s also very fast, making him a formidable adversary for the villainous Darren Cross, also known as Yellowjacket (Corey Stoll). Combining action, an elaborate caper, and the introduction of yet another character from the Marvel universe, Ant-Man features plenty of CGI-created effects.

Southpaw July 24
Kurt Sutter originally wrote this script with Eminem in mind. When the rapper dropped out to focus on his music, director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) cast Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy “The Great” Hope, the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion. His stance in the ring is unorthodox, consisting of an ineloquent, brutal display of offensive boxing fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate desire for money and fame. With a great family, a home and financial security, Billy is on top in and out of the ring until a tragic accident sends him into a downward spiral. Depressed, he spends his days in a haze of alcohol and prescription drugs while trying his best to take care of his young daughter. Just when life appears hopeless, a former boxer named Tick (Forest Whitaker) agrees to take Billy under his wing as long as he agrees to Tick’s strict regimen. Tick rebuilds Billy into a new man—not only an agile, well-trained fighter in the ring, but a thoughtful and disciplined man outside of it. As he strives to be a better father and mount a professional comeback, Billy must face his personal demons head-on.
Paper Towns July 24
The movie adaptation of John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars became a box office champ last summer, earning $300 million worldwide. Paper Towns is based on another Green novel, a coming of age mystery/romance. High school student Quentin Jacobsen (Nat Wolff) lives in Orlando, Florida. Late one night, his neighbor Margo Spiegelman (Cara Delevingne) opens his bedroom window and climbs into his life. Garbed in full ninja regalia and black face paint, she invites Quentin to join her in a revenge mission against a group of people who she feels have hurt her over the course of her high school career. However, after leading Quentin on an all-night adventure through their hometown, Margo suddenly disappears, leaving cryptic clues for Quentin to decipher. To track down Margo, Quentin must come to a deeper understanding of their friendship. The search leads him and three friends on a journey that is both moving and funny. Directed by Jake Schreier, Paper Towns was filmed in North Carolina. The screenplay is by the same writers who penned The Fault In Our Stars.
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation July 31
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) returns for another top-secret assignment in this fifth installment of the profitable franchise. It takes off where the previous film, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, left off, with Ethan prepping his team to investigate The Syndicate, a worldwide criminal organization composed of highly skilled operatives dedicated to establishing a new world order through an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Ethan joins forces with Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), a discredited British agent who may or may not be a member of this lethal rogue nation. Director Christopher McQuarrie emphasizes fistfights, motorcycle daredevilry and a stunt sure to take viewers’ breath away. In past roles, Cruise has been suspended from ceilings, jumped from motorcycles and helicopters, and climbed the tallest building in the world. For this latest film, he was strapped to a plane as it was flying 3,000 feet above ground. It co-stars Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin and Ving Rhames.

The Gift July 31
In this psychological thriller, Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) are a young married couple whose life is going just as planned until a chance encounter with an acquaintance from Simon’s high school sends them into a devastating tailspin. Simon doesn’t recognize Gordo (Joel Edgerton) at first. Following an unsettling series of seemingly coincidental encounters and mysterious gifts, a terrifying secret from their past is uncovered after nearly 20 years. As Robyn learns the truth about what happened between Simon and Gordo, she starts to question how well she really knows her spouse. The film addresses the theme of how people may unwittingly hurt others and takes it to scary extremes as, gradually, the backstory of these characters is revealed. The Gift marks the directorial debut of actor Joel Edgerton.
Ricki and the Flash August 7
Academy Award-winner Meryl Streep plays Ricki Randazzo, the lead singer/guitarist in a cover band who faced a tough decision 20 years earlier between her obligations as a married mother of three and rock ‘n’ roll. Having chosen the latter, she now returns home to Indiana to make things right with her family and seek redemption for past mistakes and poor decisions. Streep stars opposite her real-life daughter, Mamie Gummer, who plays her fictional daughter. Rick Springfield stars as Greg, a band member in love with Ricki, Kevin Kline portrays Ricki’s exhusband, Pete, and Audra McDonald stars as Pete’s new wife. In order to look credible on screen, Streep spent six months intensively practicing guitar. She performs Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “American Girl” and Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.”
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. August 14
Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) stars as Napoleon Solo, with Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s adaptation of the popular 1960s TV action series. Set in the early 1960s at the height of the Cold War, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. The early scenes show Solo and Kuryakin as enemies, with one extended chase sequence featuring a seemingly implausible zip-lining escape across the Berlin Wall that is based on an actual 1983 escape from East Berlin. Forced to set aside longstanding hostilities, Solo and Kuryakin team up on a mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization determined to destabilize the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. Their only key to infiltrating the criminal enterprise is the daughter of a vanished German scientist. Locating him is crucial to preventing a worldwide catastrophe.

Fire Up the Grill
Learn what it takes to serve up a feast fit for a steak-loving crowd of family and friends.
T
o help make your outdoor celebrations this summer extra-special be sure to serve robust, savory cuts, such as Omaha Steaks Tbone or Rib Crown selections. The T-bone is a thick cut to give you more bone-in strip and butter-tender Filet Mignon for even the heartiest of -appetites, while the Rib Crown is carved from the most prized part of the Ribeye and is known for exceptional marbling, flavor and tenderness. Both cuts are grain-fed, aged to perfection and flash-frozen to capture freshness and flavor. For more steak recipes, visit www.omahasteaks.com.
Grilling Basics For exceptional steaks every time, incorporate these tips from Omaha Steaks executive chef Karl Marsh.
1.
Clean and heat your grill on high.
2.
7. Keep a spray bottle with water handy to douse any unexpected flare-ups.
Blot dry any moisture using a clean paper towel, and then lightly oil the steak before you put it on the grill. This helps the searing process and prevents sticking.
8. For an evenly cooked piece of meat, use the 60/40 grilling method. Grill for 60 percent of the time on the first side; grill 40 percent of the time after you turn over the food.
3.
9. Place your cooked product on a clean plate. Never place cooked product on the plate you used to transport the raw product to the grill without thoroughly washing it first.
Season your food before grilling.
4. For added flavor and juiciness, be sure to sear the outside of steaks when grilling. 5. Use tongs or a spatula to turn your meat on the grill. Using a fork can damage and dry out the meat.
100
6. Cover your grill as much as possible during the grilling process. This helps to lock in the grilled flavor and prevent flare-ups.
July/August 2015
10. Allow your steaks to “rest for 5 minutes between cooking and eating. This will help retain moisture when you cut into them.

Callahan’s Hot Dogs 10 Broad Street, Norwood callahanshotdogs.com
Long, long ago Leonard “Artie” Castranni started Callahan’s Hot Dogs. After a brief absence, Castranni’s grandson Daniel DeMiglio brought Callahan’s back in a big way, starting with a food truck. In April, DeMiglio opened up a storefront in Norwood, complete with décor paying homage to Callahan’s rich history. While the long lines and anticipation from the grand opening party have slightly diminished, DeMiglio is keeping the excitement going with the extension of the menu that includes grilled cheese and the Italian hot dog, a Callahan fan favorite for decades. Items such as chicken tenders and chicken sandwiches should also be added to the menu soon. If you’re not big on hot dogs Callahan’s still has you covered. Delicious burgers with toppings such as their homemade chili and onions, and sauce with a side of onion rings will surely have you enjoying Callahan’s all summer long. Callahan’s is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

Erie, a new coffee shop and bakery, has opened in Rutherford. Owned by classically trained pastry chef Renee Faris, the shop offers an array of handcrafted items using seasonal ingredients and Cafe Grumpy coffee, the first New Jersey coffee shop to do so. Faris began her career at Buddy Valastro’s mecca of baking, Carlo’s in Hoboken; she was there for two seasons of filming of the show Cake Boss. Culinary school followed, along with stints opening restaurants in Los Angeles and then New York at Gramercy Tavern. Faris was also the opening pastry chef at Maysville NYC. The menu at Erie features a rotating selection of pies, tarts, scones, muffins, cakes and cookies. Custom cakes are also one of Faris’ specialties. Faris had a hand in the entire design process, including the “rustic” space and open kitchen. Erie is open six days a week—closed Tuesdays—from 7:00am till 6:00pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 7:00am till 8:00pm Friday, 9:00am till 8:00pm Saturday and 9:00pm till 4:00pm on Sunday. A full dining room completes the vibe, offering a more quiet area for families to enjoy the cuisine. Notable menu items include four different types of empanadas, as well as some of their tapas items such as Chicharroncito de Pollo, lollipop chicken wings with cumin and smoked paprika aioli. A long list of entrees, including slow roasted chicken, classic Cuban roast pork, skirt steak and mahi mahi, round out the extensive menu. Casual Habana is open 7 days a week.

Predictions
The Heat Is On! January
February
March
Fresh air is a must! The heat is on, so be sure to go to those office parties, even if it’s just a happy hour. Network, network, network, as it plays an important role in helping you to get that raise or promotion. A family member may be driving you crazy and need you to lend a listening ear. Try to listen without offering too much advice, as this can turn around and bite you. A day or two at the beach will help take away the stress.
Look before you leap or you might wind up paying for it the hard way. Being cautious is the way to go in the world of employment. Timing means everything. You suddenly find yourself meeting new friends through a new hobby or interest; there might even be a new love interest there as well. A smile and possibly a wink open many doors. Give yourself a gift and stop thinking so much when it comes to spending money.
Lately, it takes one word to describe you—moody. You tend to occupy yourself with busy work to avoid focusing on the goals that you should strive for. Take a deep breath and reach for your dreams. Finances seem to improve, which takes off pressure. Maybe plant a garden or plan a barbeque. Things that bring you outdoors also help to change your moods to happy. Take others up on their offers and invitations, and find yourself enjoying life much more.
April
May
June
Things are starting to turn in your direction. Your bank account is growing, your job is great, and friends are calling. What more can you ask for? You might want to start thinking of upgrading your car, as timing is in your favor. Just be careful to save some cash for a rainy day. Stop worrying about everything. You are in a good place. You have come a long way, so enjoy your achievements. Keep your options open.
When things are going too fast, don’t give up. Just back up and slow down; things will even out for you. Someone may walk into your life through business and it could turn into pleasure. Opportunity is knocking. Make sure to answer the door or even the phone. Send someone special flowers for no reason. Brightening someone’s day will brighten yours as well. Try and bring a bit more optimism to your life.
Your home is your safe haven. Thinking about sprucing up the patio? Go for it, as you’ll find great solace with outdoor projects. Traveling to new places and encountering new ideas add the excitement you crave. Keep romance in the picture. Save time for a long walk on the beach or camping out in front of the fireplace. You’re hot right now; everything is turning up roses. Let the teenager hibernating inside you come back to life!
July
August
September
You find yourself attracted to water, maybe even planning a trip to the beach or a cruise. Start scheduling, as you need a break from everything and this would be great medicine. You love your home and enjoy entertaining. You’ll be hosting at least one party for family and close friends. There seems to be a lot of things unsettled in your life right now, but with a little patience things will soon become clear. Just let small situations flourish into bigger ones.
My advice to you is don’t worry so much. When you feel overwhelmed, take time out for yourself. A bike ride in the evening or a walk in the sun or perhaps a good book will put that glow back on your face. You may find yourself putting some money into your home; it could be new furniture or a fresh coat of paint, even new drapes. Whatever you choose, it will boost your enthusiasm to do more projects.
You seem to choose the road less traveled. It seems like the easier way, but sometimes this makes for a tougher trail. Take it up a step, get out of your slump and take some chances. Socialize more. Maybe go dancing or bowling. Participate in things even when you don’t feel like it. Take some time off from work; it will still be there when you return. Plan a trip, visit family, head to the beach and listen to the waves. You will return feeling happy and refreshed.
October
November
December
It is hard to focus on your job with all the social activities coming your way. As hard as it seems, work sometimes needs to come first. Agree to some trips and adventures. It’s OK to bow out on others. You tend to overbook your calendar. Focus some time on the family, even if it seems as if, for the moment, they are getting your sloppy seconds. Otherwise you will be beating yourself up later. With better planning, you can get to a place where you can certainly have it all.
Your strong sense of purpose sometimes doesn’t allow for people to see your fun side. Laughter can be the best stress reliever. Laugh and smile more often; it looks good on you. A windfall of money is on your doorstep; it may be a large or small amount, but nonetheless, it will help you create the change you’re seeking. Treat yourself to a special day on the golf course or the spa to bring a spring to your step.
There are many new beginnings waiting just for you. It’s time to put that spark back in your life. Put one foot in front of the other and soon you will find yourself skipping toward new adventures and opportunities. Time to take your guard down and trust your own instincts. Go through your old things, get rid of some old items and add some new ones. Treat yourself to something you really want and have been putting off splurging on. You deserve it!

Why We Love
Boat Shoes B
oat shoes—a fashion icon that men have been wearing for as long as I can remember—are a mystery to me. I believe their origins date back to the early Norse Vikings, who oftentimes adorned theirs with fur, even in the summer, because that’s just how Vikings like to do things. Yet, let’s be honest with ourselves about these leather loves of ours. They only really look cool once, and that’s right after you take them out of the box and before you’ve walked a single step in them. Wear them just once, and they’re already scratched, scuffed, dirtied and, most likely, will smell like your cat used them as a litter box for several days. Oh, but they are practical, right? NO. Those few times I was on a boat, whilst rocking my boat shoes, I didn’t feel any more supported. If you told me they prevented seasickness, I’d be all in, but they don’t even help you get to the side of the boat fast enough, for fear it might slip right off your foot! Boat shoes are great for short trips. I mean short, like to the beach where you’ll take them off or while running quick errands around town. That’s it. Walk far in them and you’ll feel it in your back the next day. Try running? Ha! Please do not try that at home (or anywhere else). Then the laces become untied? Might as well 122

throw them right in the trash because you’re never getting those laces tied well again. And then there’s the smell. Oh, man, how dreadful. It took years upon years of us living with this problem, of having stinky feet for hours even after we took them off before someone came up with those ridiculous socks you can now wear with them. Now while you might not be ridiculed for your stinky feet, you surely will for your absurd socks. So lose, lose ’em. Are boat shoes stylish? Some might say so, but most would vehemently disagree. However, we didn’t name this article “Why We Hate Boat Shoes.” No, because we don’t hate them at all. They have been a staple in our wardrobes; simple men with easily defined tastes have flocked to them forever. Our fathers have them, and now we do, too. We wear them, we blister our feet, we hurt our backs, and at the end of it, after a long day, we take them off and our feet smell like Fritos. Boat shoes are stubborn, impractical and rough around the edges, but so are we, and that’s why we love them.
