hermès. time reinvented.
nantucket hermès, the alchemist of time, introduces the nantucket, a radiant watch that captures light to bring a special glow to your wrist. it blithely adapts to its wearer’s whims thanks to its interchangeable strap. yet it remains forever elegant, slender and playful, revelling in the passing of time rather than fearing it, thanks to its case fashioned in silver , a silver alloy exclusive to hermès.

S
pring is in the air! Unfortunately, it’s not on the ground, unless it’s still just covered in the few remaining feet of snow that just haven’t quite melted yet. However, we have decided to move on to spring anyway, in our minds, in our events, and in our fashions. We begin by celebrating the recent 40-degree weather, which up until a couple of weeks ago, seemed like a temperature we’d be lucky to feel for just one f leeting moment. It might not be swimming weather just yet, but it’s enough to melt the last bits of snow and have the birds chirping in celebration of the sunny season to come. With spring comes golf season, and golf season is particularly noticeable in Bergen County as the bajillion (I think that’s accurate) of country clubs around here buzz to life, full of people waving their irons (usually in anger, I’m told) and celebrating the fact that they are playing a sport they still are really not that good at. But this year’s golf season leads us to one place in particular: White Beeches Country Club in Haworth. This local hidden gem is doing its best to shed the old “stuffy country club” moniker, and is introducing so many cool initiatives to attract families to start creating their summer memories as soon as the tee boxes thaw. And for those who aren’t too into “country club chic” we have some of spring’s best looks right in our brilliant fashion spreads. We worked with Hartly Fashions in Westwood for the looks that will keep you hot even as the temperature remains cold. Welcome back, pinks, blues and greens! We have missed you dearly. Do you ever wonder what’s in your children’s school food, which they’ve been eating for years? So did Ridgewood mother Gaby Wilday. Once she saw the lack of nutrients in her kids’ lunches, she began a lunch program of her own. With her help, more than 1600 students, with more signing up daily, receive nutritious, GMO-free, organic lunches that are not only delicious, but help children transition into a lifestyle of healthier eating. We can only hope that Gaby’s No Fuss Lunch program will be available to students nationwide some day. While we dance in celebration of spring’s arrival, a premiere dance academy in Waldwick is sending its students to dance with the likes of Mariah Carey and Jimmy Fallon. We take a look at Studio L Dance and see why it offers one of North Jersey’s best dance programs. With a smile from ear to ear, we can finally say that Bergen County’s best days are coming! Shed that heavy jacket, rock that dress again, and together let’s celebrate the greatest county in the world.

Karakashian Coloring Life in Bold Strokes Silenced, 8” x 10”, acrylic and mixed media on board
E
ileen Karakashian received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1994 from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she majored in advertising design. Since graduation, she was an art director in advertising, producing both national TV and print campaigns. Her work has been featured in Adweek and Advertising Age. Yet while she toiled away making a living selling toothpaste, cars and cough medicine, she dreamed that her life—like the advertising product claims she composed—could be “33% new and improved” if she continued to pursue her passion for painting. Fine arts beckoned and she heeded the call, continuing her studies in New York City at the Art Students League, where she concentrated on painting, design, color, composition and collage. Today, Karakashian creates paintings that range from contemporary to abstract and surrealist. Vibrant and thoughtprovoking, her art reveals an intriguing combination of color, composition and texture. “I am a colorist,” Karakashian notes. “Color and texture are the foundations to my paintings. My mixed media, oil and acrylic paintings all usually start with a color idea and then evolve into a composition in which color and texture are the primary subjects. Texture creates depth and liveliness in a painting just as it does in life. Color defines moods, thoughts and perceptions; it is the backdrop to our lives.” Icons of femininity, fashion and form are recurring themes in many of Karakashian’s works. When brought forth in the right way, they signify strength, power, freedom, and love— words and states of being that don’t always ref lect the current state of women around the world. Through busts, bodices and tutus, Karakashian brings light and color to the canvas. Yet don’t try to pin Karakashian down with labels. She’s not having any of it. When asked if she is trying to make any feminist statements with her art, she answers without hesitation. “Painting images of mannequins doesn’t make me a feminist, just like a man painting images of cars or football wouldn’t make him a masculinist,” she explains. “I’d prefer to be a called an egalitarian, if a label was necessary. I paint many different subjects and on different social issues. A painting I created a couple of years ago about homosexuality and stereotypes was acquired by the New York School of Law for its sexual discrimination department. In my painting Silenced, I’m referring to a time in history when women’s voices weren’t heard or valued. Currently, I am working on a piece for the Pure Earth Foundation about toxic pollutants and its health effects on the world population. “When I paint images of femininity, I actually feel like I am empowering women and not re-enforcing any stereotypical concepts,” Karakashian continues. “When I’m painting dresses, I’m not really painting fashion. The dresses are just a tool to enhance the message of beauty and that’s why most of my mannequins are just torsos because they represent all backgrounds. They could be any woman, young or old, black or white. Women are beautiful and strong and everything feminine should be celebrated and not down played.” March/April 2015

The Artist in Quick Strokes Things that inspire me: Every facet of cosmopolitan life I can’t live without: dark chocolate Before I start painting, I like to: put on music Best advice I ever got: “If opening up a new package of a kneaded eraser doesn’t get you excited, get out of art school now!” I, of course, stayed. Worst advice I ever got: Yellow paintings don’t sell. So don’t use it (yellow). Favorite painters: Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Marc Chagall, Arthur Sarkissian Celebrity I’d most like to have as a fan: George Clooney Mannequin in Black Tutu, 36” x 48”, acrylic on canvas

What if a hospital, understanding that two hearts often beat as one, could maintain a level of excellence for years on end, resulting in a 100% patient survival rate for isolated coronary artery bypass surgery?* At Englewood Hospital and Medical Center we start each day questioning the status quo, asking “What if” – and then innovating to make it happen. Because we want to be your hospital for life.

Whiskey with an Added Twist Cocktail recipes spark more ways to enjoy a favorite drink.
D
rink mixologists enjoy finding more and more ways to complement the whiskey flavor with a plethora of other ingredients, whether it’s syrups, fruit juices, vermouth or even tea. This growing willingness to experiment with whiskey and bourbon as the primary ingredients in a variety of cocktails is just one of several ways consumer habits have been changing, according to Steven Earles, CEO of Eastside Distilling. “People are drinking less wine and more whiskey, and women have become more inclined to give whiskey a try,” says Earles, whose company already experiments with a variety of flavors in its drinks, such as Cherry Bomb Whiskey and Oregon Marionberry Whiskey. Perhaps the classic whiskey cocktail is the Old-Fashioned, which has been around since the late 19th century. However, for those looking to add even more variety to their whiskey and bourbon selections, Eastside Distilling offers some enticing cocktail recipes.
Earl’s Demise 25 oz. Cherry Bomb Whiskey (one 750ml bottle) 12 ½ oz. Burnside Bourbon 75 oz. Smith Teamaker Earl Grey Tea (chilled) 25 oz. orange juice 25 oz. simple syrup 12 ½ oz. sweet vermouth 5 tbsps. Peychaud’s Bitters Directions: Mix all of the ingredients in a large punch bowl, then add ice or ice ring. Serve in small punch glasses. The mixture serves 10-12 people.

Eastside Civil War 1 ½ oz. Burnside Bourbon ½ oz. Cocchi Torino Sweet Vermouth ½ oz. Marionberry Beret 1 ½ oz. Marionberry Whiskey ½ oz. Dry Curacao 2 oz. fresh grapefruit juice Directions: Fill glass with ice, and then add Burnside Bourbon and recipe ingredients.

Wine Picks
Crossover Wines Global communities mean global wines.
There was a time when an Italian or French winemaker barely left the town he grew up in. Regional wines were distinctly idiosyncratic and often instantly identifiable. However, today’s vintners make a point of traveling, interning and working around the world before settling into a winery or wineries. The result, sometimes, leads to out-of-the box thinking, intriguing varieties in unexpected places and unique blends.
Domaine Terlato and Chapoutier Shiraz-Viognier 2013 (Victoria)
Kaiken Terroir Series Torrontes 2012 (Salta)
Opus One Vintage 2011 (Oakville)
St. Supéry Dollarhide Vineyard Semillon 2012 (Napa Valley)
In France, the finicky white Viognier grape is often paired with the spicy red Syrah to add a bit of brightness. Bringing the concept to Australia, Anthony Terlato, of California’s Terlato Wines, and Michel Chapoutier, of the Rhone Valley’s M. Chapoutier, continue their innovative collaborations with this blend of 95% spicy Central Victoria Shiraz and 5% aromatic Viognier planted on 19th century, phylloxera-free French rootstock. The result is a complex, deep ruby red, aromatic wine where commonly brash Australian Shiraz is softened and brightened. Plum, raspberry and ripe stonefruit notes pair nicely with dishes like Moroccan lamb stew and butternut squash bisque. $15
“Kaiken” is the Mapuche Indian name for a species of native goose, one of the few animals that regularly cross the Andes between Chile and Argentina. So it was the perfect name for a wine when the prominent Chilean winemaking Montes family sent Aurelio Montes, Jr. to Argentina. Here he produces distinctive Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Torrontes, an iconic Argentinian variety of which some of the best interpretations hail from the Cafayate Valley in the Salta region. Cool nights and a high altitude (4,000 feet) contribute to a bright, lemony acidity and notes of papaya, jasmine and apple. Pair with a grilled smoked pork chop and arugula salad with olive oil, lemon and Parmesan cheese. $14
In 1980, California’s Robert Mondavi and Bordeaux’s Baron Philippe de Rothschild collaborated to create what became the first Bordeaux-style “cult” wine out of Napa Valley. Old and New World vinification techniques, combined with cutting edge technology, consistently produces big, flavorful Cabernet Sauvignon blends. The 2011, rich with herbal notes of bay and black tea, black cherry and cocoa, is a melange of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon (the lowest percentage yet for an Opus One vintage), 11% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. Drink it on its own (between now and 2040) or pair with steak, then bittersweet chocolate. $230
Frenchman Robert Skalli was busy revitalizing Languedoc’s winemaking region in the early 1980s when he became enamored of Napa Valley and an undeveloped cattle ranch called Dollarhide. Meanwhile, St. Supéry winemaker Michael Scholz, who hails from Australia, decided the region is perfect for Semillon, a grape that thrives in the Land Down Under. Bolstered by Napa’s cooling morning fogs and scorching afternoons, the green-gold vibrant wine shows citrus aromatics with a palate highlighted by lime, butter, green apricot and light oak. Pair with panko-crusted flounder and kale salad, or a lime-based squid and tilapia ceviche. $30
Robert Haynes-Peterson is editor of the American Sommelier Association’s 24-week Vinification and Viticulture textbook, and has received certifications from the American Sommelier Association and the Master Mezcalier program.

Linda’s List
The “Glorious Gold Coast” of Fort Lee, Englewood Cliffs & Edgewater
Dr. Bruce Freund’s waiting room
M
y moi day this time around was to be a trifecta trek of three of the outstanding towns that comprise the “Glorious Gold Coast.” Every day I count my lucky stars that I get to call the GW Bridge and the NYC skyline my backyard. The former is often also the site of my workouts. On this particular morning, I started my daily exercise routine with a walk over the bridge. Besides the energy boost, I got a lift from the breathtaking view. I also got plenty of attention as people spotted me and beeped their car horns or texted me to ask “was that u I saw walking over the bridge?” Yes, it was! After beginning the day on such positive footing, I continued by walking to meet my bestie Lisa at Caffe Bene (1636 Palisades Avenue, Fort Lee) for a decaf soy latte and yogurt with fresh fruit. Absolutely yummy! While the menu offerings are enough to tempt you into being a regular, did I mention CB’s spacious seating and free WiFi? Although it’s all too easy to linger in the comfy CB setting, I’ve made an appointment to tour the fantastic brand-new Modern Luxury High Rise Rentals (800 Park Avenue, Fort Lee). It’s only a little ways down the street and I’m just dying to see it, so off we go. Wow, this place is beautiful, boasting so many fabulous amenities that it will never be necessary to leave home. [BTW: I have to thank my good friend Lance Maiden from Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage (2151 Lemoine Avenue, Fort Lee) for setting up my tour.] But now I’m stressing over whether I should sell and move into the Modern. Lisa soon sets me straight. “Get over it and stay in your own beautiful home,” she counsels. I laugh, and saying I need some TLC since she’s not giving me any, we head over to Dr. Bruce Freund’s dental office (700 E. Palisades Avenue, Englewood Cliffs). We are both in awe of his brand new aesthetic spa center. We leave looking and feeling super fab, and with our purchases from Obagi Medical Products, Inc., which offers an extensive line of anti-aging skin care items. Honestly, I could make this divine spa my second home and I don’t think Rhonda would mind if I did. (BTW: Rhonda is Dr. Freund’s wife and office manager, not to mention an expert cosmetician.) With esthetics still on my mind, we decide to visit the office of Dr. Jeffrey Rappaport (323 Sylvan Avenue #207, Englewood Cliffs) for a consult on cool sculpting, the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat reduction treatment that uses controlled heating to get rid of persistent fat that just won’t go away no matter how nicely you ask, or how hard you diet and exercise. I told Lina, his office manager, I think I’d like to be cool sculpted from head to toe. She laughed and thought I was joking, but I wasn’t. Can’t a girl dream? OK, OK, let’s go to lunch. So many great restaurants to choose from, but we opt for G.W. Grill (2139 Hudson Terrace, Fort Lee) aka L and L’s second kitchen and home away from home. Today we order the tilapia tacos and my favorite sliders. And Christina, the adorable bartender, twists our arms to have beers with our lunch. We are very happy besties! I’ll meet up with L later on because I’m off to Fort Lee Racquet Club (532 N. Avenue, Fort Lee) for a two-hour round robin. This is where my addiction to tennis
Linda’s List began almost 20 years ago with Dana, my first tennis instructor. Practically a fixture at FLRC, I regularly take lessons with some of the greats they have there. Afterwards I run home and shower and change before I meet L for Happy Hour. I’m refreshed and ready to go but first I think I’m just going to run to see my good friend Joe Parisi, who is the great mayor of Englewood Cliffs. His company, Otterstedt Insurance Agency (540 Sylvan Avenue, Englewood Cliffs) takes good care of my home and auto insurance needs. My gratitude to all of the knowledgeable staff! Before I venture out tonight I better stop to get some dinero at Connect One Bank (301 Sylvan Avenue, Englewood Cliffs). I made a good choice in banks. This bank sure is growing quickly. Frank Sorrentino, the founder, is a very smart businessman, and the bank staff is so friendly; I just love coming here. I’m going to be a tad late for Happy Hour at In Napoli (116 Main Street, Fort Lee). Lisa and I just love to hang with Flo, the owner; she is really nice and the food is soooooo good. Since I phoned to inform L of my ETA, Lynn the bartender had my beverage of choice waiting for me. (Hate to admit it, but I’ve become my mother; I’m so predictable.) But love ya, Lynn, for knowing—and indulging—my habits! Of course as Lisa and I sip our beverages we have our calendars out to pick our date for our cool sculpt. Can’t wait to get it done! My life’s not too shabby! But enough of the body improvement plans; let’s go to The River Palm Terrace (1416 River Road, Edgewater) to see Andy, the best sushi chef ever. While at River Palm Terrace, I usually prefer to sit at the big spacious bar because Steve and Gary are so attentive to me. Yes, me. OK, you, too, Lisa! Shhhh! Did you know that RP is a who’s who kind of place? Oh, look; there’s Joel Reinfeld, Esq, whose law practice is at 210 Sylvan Avenue Suite 21, Englewood Cliffs. I heard he is one of the greats in Bergen County; wish I’d known him when I went through my “War of the Roses” with my ex. I hate to admit this, but I’m a little tired. Pause for my yawn. Wow, another great Me day. The Gold Coast has true treasures. I can’t wait until the new hotel and shopping complex is completed on Lemoine Avenue in Fort Lee. You’ll have to come see it for yourself. Just don’t forget to pick up your copy of BC THE MAG along the way. You won’t want to miss Linda’s List and the great articles to get the scoop on some of the wonderful businesses featured in the mag. Buonanotte! See you next time!

Seller’s Guide to Showcasing
Success
I
f you’re considering listing your home for sale this spring, now is the time to begin preparing it for showings. The task can seem daunting, but rest assured that getting started is the hardest part. Setting and prioritizing attainable goals are key elements to success. Here are tips on how to tackle them for maximum results! Send an Invitation. An attractive front entrance is an invitation to buyers to see the interior of your house. The front door is the focal point and should be freshly painted or polished. Update the look of your front entrance by replacing small porch lights with larger fixtures. Add a plush doormat and new house numbers. A pair

of urns with seasonal flowers or greens should flank the door. Avoid wreaths and theme flags, which can be distracting. Closet Management. Every buyer wants more closet space. Begin with your coat closet. Hanging only as many coats as can comfortably fit will give the closet a larger look. Donate unused coats and store the remainder inside a solid color garment bag on a rack in the basement. Purchase heavy-duty plastic hangers, all in the same color. Each hanger and coat should be facing the same direction. Button the top two buttons of each coat. Box boots, hats and gloves and place them on the closet shelf. Nothing should be on the floor. Applying these same rules, move on to the master
bedroom closet, then to the remaining bedroom closets. Model Home. Buyers need to envision themselves living in a house before they can purchase it. Objects that too closely identify the house with the sellers will inhibit the development of that vision. Family photographs should be removed from tables and walls and stored out of sight. Diplomas, awards and collections, such as porcelain figurines and sports memorabilia, should also be placed out of view. A simple way to judge if an object is too closely identified with the seller is to think of your house as though it were a model home. There are no family photos, diplomas, awards or collections in model homes to
distract buyers from observing its features.
should be neatly arranged.
Free Floor. A simple trick to make a room appear more spacious is to remove all extraneous items from the floor. Backpacks, sports bags, golf clubs, handbags, plastic tubs, computer towers, plants and floral arrangements, commercial water dispensers and bottles, toys, books, musical instruments, work materials, household projects, suitcases, speakers and throw rugs must all be stowed. If you can’t find a place in your home to relocate these items, lease a unit in your local storage facility and move them into it.
Bathroom Protocol. Bathrooms are closely scrutinized by the home shopper as they evaluate whether they are in need of expensive updating. The most important thing you can do to give your bathroom a sleek appearance is to remove all toiletries, make-up, shower caps, razors and wash cloths from the shower, tub and counters. Keep other decorative countertop items to a minimum. Towels should be matching and folded as they would be in a fine hotel. Don’t hang clothing and towels on the back of the bathroom door. Toilet brushes and plungers must be hidden. Replace or remove tired throw rugs.
Kitchens Rule. Whether your kitchen is new and gourmet or old and in need of renovation, the same concepts apply. Cleanliness is paramount, especially when it comes to the cook-top, oven interiors and sinks. Countertops should gleam and only a few of your most attractive items should remain visible. Counter clutter suggests inadequate counter or cabinet space. Prospective buyers will open your cabinets and pantry, so stored items
Garage Appeal. Garage cabinetry is so popular today because people love an orderly garage. Make the investment in a lower priced model. It will make the same impression as the higher priced version. Place all tools, garden supplies and sporting goods in the cabinets. Windows should be washed and bug-free. The floor should be swept and hosed down. Paint the walls a
light neutral color. Be sure the entry door and sill from the garage to the house are freshly painted and in tip-top condition. Hang bicycles on racks. New matching garbage cans provide the finishing touch. Give yourself plenty of time to complete these projects and they will not seem so overwhelming. Finish what you can and don’t worry too much about what you can’t accomplish. Any task completed is an improvement. Don’t give up! Keep yourself motivated with the knowledge that the better your home shows, the higher the price it will command. You will be certain all of the hard work was well worth the effort when you pick up your super-sized check at closing. BC Eats In collaboration with local foodie website Boozy Burbs, BC Eats will spotlight all that’s new and exciting on the local restaurant scene.
Finca 20 East Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood 201-444-1199 // fincanj.com
Finca, the restaurant promoting that it is the “estate of small plates” in the former Stable restaurant location, has opened its doors in Ridgewood. Similar in concept to its sister restaurant, Cravings, Finca is a tapas restaurant, serving a selection of small plates. While the menu at Cravings is influenced by Spanish and European fusion, Finca’s offerings span more of the globe to include Asian and American cuisines. Executive Chef Martin Rangel is the culinary mind behind Finca. With more than 18 years of experience in the industry, Rangel started at Danube in New York City and then refined his talents at eateries such as Le Bernardin and Eleven Madison Park. Finca owner Marcelo Czernizer brought in Rangel and Finca’s unique menu was born. The menu is broken down into nine categories: zesty, spreads, vegan, Asian fusion, sea, land, garden, charcuterie and empanadas. Not in the mood for traditional tapas? That’s fine; it’s worth trying the ricotta gnocchi with lamb ragu. Italian not your cup of tea, either? A beautiful seaweed salad or crabmeat stuffed avocado might just do the trick. According to the website, all menu items are subject to change. Finca is currently open for dinner only and reservations can be made by phone.

California Tortilla 20 Chestnut Ridge Road, Montvale 201-391-1212 // californiatortilla.com
Cal-Mex chain California Tortilla, has opened its first Bergen County location in Montvale, with another planned for River Edge. The store, run by Wyckoff resident Lauren Sanford and her parents, is hoping to appeal to local taste buds with the chain’s menu of made-to-order burritos, quesadillas and salads. Stuff your burrito or burrito bowl with mesquite or blackened chicken, traditional taco beef, grilled steak, carnitas or blackened fish. Two vegetarian options, farm fresh veggies or fajita veggies, are also available for order. Then, add a sauce, from just sour cream to Caribbean mango or Korean BBQ. Not into making your own? There are plenty of chef-inspired creations ready for you to order, such as the Crunchy BBQ Ranch with mesquite chicken, BBQ sauce, ranch dressing, rice, black beans and tortilla strips. Or the No-Meato, which is pretty self-explanatory. California Tortilla features an open kitchen with produce and meats sourced locally in New Jersey. Including all sauces and guacamole, everything is homemade and fresh, according to Sanford, who notes there are no freezers. A special area in the eatery called the “Wall of Flame” houses 75 bottles of hot sauce brands from around the country; choose wisely.
Orama 595 River Road, Edgewater 201-945-2020 // orama.com
Details are still slim on the long-term menu specifics, but this much is confirmed: Orama, the globally inspired restaurant from Chef John Piliouras (of Nisi in Englewood) is open and serving dinner. The two-story building was beautifully constructed with bars on both floors, a chef’s table, private VIP dining room and gorgeous riverfront views. It also boasts an outdoor patio, which will host a rotis-
serie and should really impress when the weather warms up. Orama collaborated with Alex J. Morales, an extremely talented muralist and artist from Uruguay, to create stunning interior and exterior pieces of art, which only add to Orama’s beautiful architecture. It appears that the menu will vary by floor. If you dine on the first floor, tapas, a raw bar, flat breads and cured meats take the center stage. On the second floor, a full dinner menu comprised of, but not limited to, Greek-inspired dishes offers everything from lobster Maxime to an Australian Wagyu sirloin. You can expect the menu to change and evolve quickly, throwing in many seasonal items. The team at Orama is also taking private event bookings for both the VIP room and Chef’s tasting table. Currently open for dinner only, reservations can be made by phone or on Open Table. Continued on pg. 118

Royce’ Chocolate 595 River Road, Mitsuwa Marketplace, Edgewater 201-945-5200 // royceconfectusa.com
For those of us who can never get enough chocolate, Japanese chocolatier Royce’ Chocolates has opened its first U.S. boutique outside of Manhattan. They’ve chosen Mitsuwa Marketplace in Edgewater as the location, which had hosted a popup for the brand during the holiday season. “Our partnership with Mitsuwa is an incredibly happy moment for both Royce’ as a company and our fans who have been hungry for locations outside of Manhattan,” says Royce’s Managing Director Ken Romaniszyn. “Chocolate lovers will be able to sample and purchase the entire Royce’ Confect line of Namas, potato chip chocolates, truffles, almonds and so much more.” Chocolates include Nama Chocolates—similar to ganache—potato chip chocolates, and Royce’s specialty: Maccha, or green tea, flavored chocolates. The brand is inspired by Belgian chocolatiers, with all product sourced from Japan to maintain their authenticity.
Emma 34 East Palisade Avenue, Englewood 201-227-6103 // emma34.com
Emma, the new restaurant from partner Miguel Aguirre (Emma is his mother) and Chef James Muir, has opened in Englewood. The restaurant, which shares some of its DNA with Jersey City’s Orale Mexican Kitchen, where Muir is also the chef, is envisioned as “comfort American food” with “Latin flavors”. The menu at Emma, which is “90% American”, takes cues from Chef Muir and Miguel’s comfort food roots and uses both “creative” ingredients and techniques to create exciting flavors. Signature dishes include their Crostini Tasting, which is served with Balthazar bread and topped with items like house-cured salmon. Other menu items include grilled brisket from famed purveyors The Allen Brothers and a shrimp burger on a toasted brioche bun with pickled red onion and chipotle aioli. The 40+ seat BYO—though there is a “cocktail-driven” virgin cocktail menu—is open for dinner with lunch and outdoor dining coming soon.

Some days may seem like a scavenger hunt to find your keys or that lost scarf. If you look hard, you might discover treasures you didn’t even realize you had; that sentimental something you put in a safe place will reappear, reminding you of someone you haven’t seen or heard from in quite a while. Not everything is hidden under a rock. Sometimes the answers are right in front you. Take time to unwind and relax with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. No need to overdo; leave some things to do for tomorrow.
Today has a memory in it for you! Take the time to see it and enjoy it. Recreating a special event for that special person might just be what the doctor ordered to add a little spark to a relationship. Work can be overwhelming, but make sure you include some “me” time in your day to help balance the stress. A bubble bath at the end of the day may be your answer. Keep in touch with family, but try not to get tangled up in confrontations that don’t include you. A smile opens many doors.
You have so much to give. Take time to share your heart today! Share your joy, your words, your stories, your laughter and your hope. Make memories, enjoy traditions or create new ones. While today may not go as perfectly as you may have hoped, enjoy it anyway. Thinking about turning a hobby into a business? Go for it, as you have the creative knack and ability to make it work. Just be careful with your money. Avoid spending on frivolous things and be sure to save for a rainy day.

Enjoy today! Don’t overthink tomorrow or the day after that. Time will take care of today’s issues. Make the decision to have a wonderful day with someone special. Try something new with your hair—maybe a different color or style choice—to help give you a physical and mental update. Improved communications at work may find you landing a better position and possibly a raise. A call from an old friend reappearing out of the blue will bring happiness to you both.
You seem to have more obstacles than usual. Hang in there and be grateful for the family and friends who reach out when you need a helping hand or are there to make you laugh when you are having a bad day. The good news is that just as quickly as the obstacles appeared, everything will seem to start running smoothly. If you have been thinking of getting a pet, now might be the time to venture into this commitment. Relationships prove smooth sailing and your social calendar will keep you happily engaged.
Offer someone a kind gesture to re-ignite that good karma spirit. Keep in mind that whatever you do today will make it a great day. You will truly feel happiness when you pass it on to others. So treat someone to a lunch or pay a visit to someone you have been too busy to see. You seem to get more from the giving than the receiving. A quick getaway opportunity will appear from nowhere; pack that bag and go because fun and laughter are on the itinerary. If you’re considering changing something in your home, now is a good time to go for a new look.

You may find yourself having the urge to stay at home, maybe even invite family or friends over for dinner and game night. After finally having been able to stash away some cash, you might start wanting to plan that special vacation you have been putting off. Whether it’s a tropical escape or European adventure, this reward is one you deserve and will love. Work has its ups and downs; ride them through, as it will be to your advantage in the end.
Car issues? Try to resist the impulse to buy a new car. Whatever you decide to do, first make very sure to do your homework so you don’t regret your choice. You seem to be living in your own world these days; it’s time to let others in. Whether it’s a new romance or a new friendship that is waiting for you, enjoy it. You’ve been suffering from a bit of cabin fever so planning some outdoor activities will do you good and bring you happiness. Try taking a mini walk. Remember, fresh air, fresh mind!
Put on a happy face. Lots of changes are waiting for you. Keep an open mind when it comes to relationships, whether you are recreating an old one or searching for a new one. Romance is in your favor. Keep your nose to the grindstone at work and stay away from gossip. Family gatherings may be challenging, but remember to bring that happy face and throw in a smile. You are struggling with the nonsense of others, but keep in mind it may also have something to do with your own mood. Keep your eyes and heart open.

Looking at things from another angle may help you to see things with a new perspective. Be careful not to pass judgment until you know the whole story. Take the time to volunteer for a cause that is dear to your heart, as it will prove very rewarding. Good things come to those who give of themselves and the bonus may be the connection you make with another volunteer. Or since money concerns are on your mind these days, you might also consider taking on a small part-time job.
Have you been thinking about a big purchase lately? Take the plunge, start seriously looking and you might find that home or car of your dreams and, better yet, at the right price. Timing is everything. Reinvent or recreate some of your old thoughts. You will amaze yourself with your capabilities, especially in the work place. So, when the boss asks you to step out of your comfort zone, don’t hesitate. Want to take on an extra project? Go for it! You are coming into your own. You’ve got this! Time to take chances and start living your dreams.
Time to clean out your closets. (I don’t necessarily mean that literally.) You might want to reconsider some of the things and people to which you’ve been clinging. Maybe try reappearing at some of your old stomping grounds, meeting up with old friends or even a cousin with whom you’ve been out of touch. You need to add new things in your life to make way for new possibilities. Behind every door are new opportunities. Open all the doors and give others a chance to make amends to you or for you to make amends to others. It’s all about choices, changes and hope.

Last Laugh
Let’s Get the Heck Out of Here!

veryone will tell you that January and February are the best times to travel from chilly Bergen County to pretty much any place in the Caribbean. Well, guess what? They would be wrong. Does the thought of ditching the dirty black roadside snow for white sandy beaches appeal to you? Of course it does. I don’t blame you! The problem: It appeals to everyone else, too. Bergen County is a beautiful place, and by May, there really is no reason you should be taking a plane anywhere—unless you fly private from here to your shore house, in which case, I salute you! Yet March and April offer plenty of time to get away when less people are following suit. Yes, if you go to a spring break spot in March, you’re bound to run into a few too many college kids playing a little too much drunk Marco Polo (secret, it’s very similar to sober Marco Polo). However, if you choose the right resort, you’re bound to have pretty much the whole beach to yourself, or you and your family, if you absolutely have to take them. This past holiday season I was fortunate enough to beat the Christmas rush by traveling the week before Christmas to the Dominican Republic. What a beautiful place! Lucky for me, it was nowhere near capacity at that time, and that allowed my girlfriend and me to strike up a relationship with a very important man at the resort: the drink server. Now, you may laugh, but I’m being sincere. Without him, my vacation would’ve suffered. He was just getting into the holiday spirit. He was excited that a week from then a

bunch of suckers and their families were going to come down, spend way too much, and fill the beach chairs, and more importantly, his pockets with beautiful cotton cloth green tips with the happy faces of some of our nation’s most beloved founding fathers. While we became closer, partly because he made a mean piña colada, he let us in on a little secret. He made sure no one around could hear, and then he whispered, “Come in March; that’s absolutely the best time.” We were a bit surprised, but it did really make sense, assuming you travel to an island, city or resort that college spring breakers don’t. That would be my cardinal rule, unless you’re into that kind of thing. I’ve heard and seen many examples of us more mature partiers trying to hang with the college hordes. Believe me, no
matter how well you think you can hold up in comparison to them, you can’t. For your own sake, please, I beg you, stop trying. So, as the snow begins to thaw, but everything is still kind of dead and not that warm, make your quick escape. Consider it your appetizer to summer’s main course: warm beaches, great cocktails, nice tans and beautiful tans. Remember those? I think it’s about time you make that quick escape.
