Publishers’ Letter

I

t always makes me laugh, this whole local “farm to table” nonsense every restaurant is preaching nowadays. Until about two weeks ago, I was looking outside and everything was still covered in frost. Just exactly where are these farms? I only wish someone had taken me there all of this past winter so I could have thrived like all of those luscious sun-kissed tomatoes they keep boasting about! However, brighter days are indeed ahead. During the next few months, we really will get a chance to see—and taste— what the phrase “farm to table” means, as many local restaurants are able to source their ingredients from some of New Jersey’s greenest pastures and we learn that upstate New York is actually good for something: farmland. Al fresco dining has become as trendy as brunch, which is about as overplayed as the food truck fad. Remember when you used to sit down in a restaurant, not wonder what your cow ate before it came to rest on your plate, and simply enjoy a good meal? Luckily, places like Callahan’s, which has opened up a brand new storefront in Norwood, get me completely. Of course, you can always check out the latest restaurant openings in our BC Eats section, which this time around has a little for everyone, all over the county and farther out! Another project we are introducing in this issue is our “Getting to Know You” column. Offering a glimpse of the people who make Bergen County the great place it is, photographer Carolyne Rao will take us around the area to meet some of our finest neighbors, shining a positive light on the people who make our days brighter—sometimes without us even realizing it. Of course, we can’t talk early summer without mentioning the fashion. This year, look for a lot of lace and f lowing dresses, a slightly more conservative approach than we’ve been seeing for some time. We went over to Boutique 811 in Franklin Lakes to get the lowdown on what will be fashionably “hot” to wear in this year’s heat. With every issue of BC THE MAG we have the opportunity to meet so many incredible people, and hopefully, properly tell their remarkable stories. One is the story of Megan McGill, or more importantly, of her brother, Staff Sergeant Tim McGill, who tragically gave his life serving our country in Afghanistan. Since then, Megan has made it her duty to help tell Tim’s story and create a fostering environment for others who are aff licted with tragedy. On a lighter note, we wish you all a great finish to your spring and promising start to your summer. We hope to see you all enjoying Bergen County’s beautiful parks in the upcoming months!

The Fluid Magic of Abstract Realism

H

arry Martin is an Emmy award-winning TV journalist who began his career as a news photographer. Most recently he anchored The 10 O’Clock News at My9 (WWOR) and The 6 PM News on Fox 5 New York (WNYW). His latest project “Harry Martin Underwater” centers on underwater glamour and fashion. This unique collection of photographic canvases was all shot underwater. His recent one-man show at the Piermont Flywheel Gallery received widespread acclaim. Harry, who lives in Cresskill with his wife, Sarah Wallace, and their two children, Sara and James, recently partnered with Neiman Marcus, Paramus for “The Art of Fashion”, a week-long event that featured Harry’s underwater photography along with the store’s 2015 Spring Fashion trends; 50% of the proceeds from Harry’s sales benefited the Bergen Family Center.

“When you shoot

underwater, it brings an entirely new dimension to how light behaves. There’s reflection and refraction. The light bounces and bends in unpredictable and abstract ways.” —Harry Martin

Getting to

know you...

Carolyne Rao was tired of seeing the same old doom and gloom on the news. Armed with her camera and a big heart, Carolyne began “The Feel Good Project of Bergen County.” Here, we will display some of her work, and get a peek into the hearts and souls of our neighbors who share their stories of accomplishments, joy and all things positive.

K.G. Benell

U.S. Navy veteran, author of award-winning novel Where the Wolf Preys After retiring from the military, you wrote a novel. What was your inspiration? “I actually dreamed the plot to this book... So I started to work on it. Once I had it, I thought I could do something with it. And I just pursued it. It took me... probably 10 years to write it ‘cuz I would write it, put it down...”

Joseph Sorbanelli

Captain of Englewood Fire Department You lost over 100 pounds in a year. What motivated you and how did you do it? “I lost 140 pounds in a year. My first inspiration was my daughter, Rebecca. She told me she was going to ride her bicycle for charity from North Carolina to San Diego, California, and she did. So I said ‘OK, Rebecca’s riding, I’m going to try and be healthy.’ So I lost five pounds and then another five pounds. I took up running and never stopped.”

Carolyne Rao is a Bergen County photographer specializing in children and family portraits. Working with natural light indoors and out, she works to produce real-life artistic images for her clients. She sees beauty in places others may not.

Allergic Attraction New dating site targets food allergy sufferers

W

illiam Schreer was two years old when he suffered his first allergic reaction to tree nuts. It wasn’t until years later, that he had another. “The Christmas before last, my husband was at a holiday party and brought home some fudge,” explained Arianne Schreer, who works for the family real estate business. “Next thing you know, William was having a violent reaction, full anaphylactic shock.” The panicked parents rushed William, also an asthmatic, to nearby Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, where five nurses worked on their son for hours while Schreer’s sister, Alexis Pizzuro, tended to

her daughter. “We’ve always managed William so well,” said Pizzuro, who also works for the family real estate business. “How did this happen in our own house on our own watch?” William recovered, and that fudge, well, it appears to have had ground walnuts in the batter hence William’s reaction. Now 13 years old, William is a hockey and baseball player and attends bar and bat mitzvahs—with his EpiPen in tow. The episode sparked a thought in William’s mother and aunt: What would happen when William went off to college? Started dating? “We thought: We’re going to make a place where he is going to meet someone just like him and they’ll keep each other

safe,” said Pizzuro, a lover of social media. Pizzuro and Schreer did just that. The sisters, alums of Dwight Englewood High School and Boston University, created Allergic Attraction, a friendship and dating network for young adults with food allergies. Mainly targeting college students, Allergic Attraction is a website and a mobile app that provides a fun and stress-free way for young adults with food allergies to meet and form relationships within college communities. In September, Allergic Attraction went live. By the beginning of April, Allergic Attraction had hundreds of users. “It’s all that we can hope for right now,” said Pizzuro. “We’re reaching a bunch of new people each week. Our hope is that ev-

ery college will have their own little allergy community.” To utilize the site, interested individuals merely have to create a free account, where they can enter their name, age, state, college and allergy. Then, as with other social networks, you choose what type of relationship you’re seeking—friendship or dating. From there, you may socialize via the public message boards or private message other users. “William’s on the site and someone contacted him for a friendship,” said Schreer. “We have a user that is a married mother that suffers from a food allergy. She’s on there looking for someone her age and from her area to socialize with.” Currently the only site like it available, Allergic Attraction connects those allergic to tree nuts, fish, shellfish, eggs, peanuts, soy, wheat and milk. “It’s been really exciting watching it spread and grow,” said Schreer. With food allergies affecting up to 15 million people in the United States, including one in 13 children, the sisters’ goal is to promote that there is safety in numbers, and in education. Pizzuro and Schreer mentioned the November 2014 death of Oakland University sophomore Chandler Swink. Swink, who had a nut allergy, had been at a friend’s apartment on the Michigan college campus where peanut butter cookies had been baked. Somehow, Swink came into contact with the cookies or their residue. Noticing reaction symptoms, Swink went to his car to inject himself with adrenaline and drove himself to the hospital. Sadly, he was found unconscious in the parking lot after suffering an anaphylactic shock, cardiac arrest and an asthma attack, according to published reports. “We need to support each other,” said Pizzuro. “Empower this group of kids. Kids are not really forthcoming when they meet people. At that age, if you have a food allergy, you don’t volunteer that.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that four to six percent of children have food allergies and that the prevalence of food allergies increased by nearly 20 percent between 1997 and 2007. “This generation is plagued with food allergies,” said Schreer, who recalled one or two children with food allergies during her school years. “There are full tables in every lunch room dedicated to students with food allergies. And, those kids grow up, go to college, live on their own, date. It’s really scary.” Scary indeed. Food allergies have become the most common cause of anaphylaxis, “a sudden and severe allergic reaction that may cause death,” according to CDC, which notes there is no cure for food allergies and that “strict avoidance of the food allergen is the only way to prevent a reaction.” While avoidance is mandatory for sufferers, education amongst their friends and family is paramount as is a support system, such as Allergic Attraction. “Our main goal is to have a social community,” said Pizzuro, “so when they are at parties, at college or out and about, Allergic Attraction helps them stay safe. There truly is safety in numbers.”

Wine Picks

Enjoying Rosé Varieties Rosé wine producers enjoy a wide range of production options. As the weather warms, the rosés once again come out of hibernation. In the past couple of years, the audience for these selections—produced either through limited red grape skin contact during pressing or by blending red and white wines—has expanded dramatically. At same time, the flavor profile for rosés has also expanded, thanks to the use of inventive regional grape varieties.

2013 Cantina Andriano Lagrein Rosé (Alto Adige DOC)

2014 Young Inglewood Vin Clair Rosé (St. Helena)

Stemmari Rosé 2014 (Ragusa)

Located at the base of the Alps in Northern Italy, on the border with Austria, the Trentino-Alto Adige region is one of the most intriguing wine and culinary destinations in all of southern Europe. The indigenous Lagrein (or Lagrino) isn’t a particularly well-known red, but the region does prove popular in rosés. This deep salmon-pink wine is aromatic, with fruit topnotes of strawberry and ripe peach. On the mouth it is vibrant, full-bodied and medium dry with slightly astringent notes of citrus, strawberry and gooseberry, and a mineral finish. Pair with baked Brie or grilled mahi mahi with a yellow pepper pesto. $22

Napa Valley makes a point in stating the precise date on which rosé grapes are harvested. Picked in August 2014 and bottled six months later on January 29, 2015, this whole-cluster Malbec-Merlot blend received only the gentlest of pressings, imparting a surprisingly light pale gold color. Cool weather and early harvesting soften the flavors, while benchland alluvial gravels in the vineyards contribute to a classic Bordeaux-style profile. Low alcohol (11.9%) makes for easy drinking. It is tart, clean and acidic with notes of green apple and tart blackberry. Pair with grapes and fine cheeses, fried chicken, or spinach and pine nut quiche. $36

While Sicily’s Nero d’Avolo grape is best known for producing an intense, inky red wine, it’s also intriguing as a dry rosé. The first rosé offering from this large winery, which recently underwent a $150 million renovation/ replanting, is also produced in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. Thanks to the grape itself and a six-to-eight hour maceration time, the wine is an intense ruby-violet color, rich with fresh cherry and strawberry fruit notes associated with the grape. Pair with appetizers like cheese puffs or blanched green beans, or with roast pork tenderloin and buttered apples. $10

Ouled Thaleb Moroccan Rosé 2012 (AOG Zenata)

Morocco was once a major wine producer, and Domaine Ouled Thaleb hopes to re-establish the tradition in this predominantly Muslim (non-drinking) country. Its focus these days are on French Cote du Rhone varieties, rather than long-lost indigenous grapes, but the region is well suited for such hardy varieties. The 2012 rosé, a lovely clean pink hue, is a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Cinsault for a clean, savory, crisp wine with notes of cranberries, raspberries and rose. Pair with Mediterranean dishes such as orzo salad with olives, onions and chickpeas, or baked sole with a tomato, apple and fennel sauce. $12

Divorce Mediation:

Is it Right for You?

S

eparation and divorce are among the most painful and disruptive events an individual and family can experience. As a divorced (and remarried) mother of three, I know all too well the devastating emotional and financial impact the process can have on every member of the family. For many couples, mediation can be the difference between a long, adversarial and costly divorce and one that empowers them to work together to forge a settlement that meets their needs while honing the skills to manage future conflicts. At the time of my divorce, I went from stay-at-home mom to financial planner seemingly overnight, with a great deal of pressure to provide for my three children and myself. Over time, I found myself helping many individuals who were going through what I had experienced—trying to navigate the divorce process with little or no knowledge or understanding of the financial aspects of their marriage. My passion for helping couples to find a productive and satisfying way to dissolve their unions led me to become a certified 60

May/June 2015

divorce financial analyst and divorce mediator. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to support people in working together to arrive at a settlement that is fair and equitable for everyone involved without the costly legal battles and emotional wear and tear that are so often part of the process. One of the most common things I find in my practice is that people don’t have a clear understanding of what mediation entails. Many prospective clients have the mistaken impression that mediation is only for couples for whom divorce is relatively simple. They don’t have children or a business or a lot of assets, so there is little to negotiate. Others believe mediation is something that works only for couples that are separating amicably, or are already skilled at compromise. However, the reality is that mediation is for any couple that wants to retain control over the decisions that affect their lives. They will fully understand the consequences of their decisions as well as the implications of the agreement they sign. And the “bonus” is that they learn techniques for resolving differences that will be useful down the road.

How Does It Work?

In divorce mediation, couples reach agreements on their own that address both immediate and long-range concerns. The role of a divorce mediator is to help both parties focus on relevant issues and encourage their active participation in the negotiations. Together they create reasonable solutions that take into consideration the needs of their entire family. During the initial session, the couple discusses key concerns, such as evaluating their present financial condition and providing for their future financial needs. Couples with children learn to separate their spousal role, which is ending, from their parental role, which is continuing. Then they gather any necessary data and, step by step, make decisions about the type of agreement they want. Points typically decided include: • Division of property • Parenting arrangements • Child support • Spousal maintenance (alimony) • Tax implications • Ways to avoid future problems

Each mediation session usually lasts from one to two hours. Once a tentative agreement is reached, every client is encouraged to have a lawyer review the document. An attorney case consultant will draw up the final agreement and file it in court.

Benefits of Mediation

While the goal of mediation is to reach an agreement that both parties feel good about, there are also some practical benefits: • Mediation takes less time than the court process. The average agreement can be reached in six to 12 hours. • Since the process is confidential, couples can avoid public disclosure of financial information and other personal matters. • Mediation costs less than a litigated divorce for a number of reasons, the most obvious being that there is no need to pay two lawyers to work out the multitude of legal details.

Couples often find that what they appreciate most about the mediation process is that it reduces tension and conflict. It’s the rare couple that doesn’t feel some anger during a divorce. Mediators show people how to work together productively in spite of their anger. While mediation won’t necessarily eliminate angry feelings, it keeps those feelings from adversely affecting major financial and parenting decisions. Our divorce court system fans the flames of distrust between divorcing spouses by encouraging a winner-take-all mentality. The objective of a divorce mediator is to help couples achieve a win-win. Unlike an attorney, a divorce mediator does not advocate for either party or make any decisions for them. The divorce mediator’s role is to help maintain the balance of power as they work towards a fair and satisfactory settlement with no winner or loser. An open line of communication is essential to making decisions that serve both parties. So the mediation process itself cre-

ates a cooperative environment that helps couples avoid getting caught up in an adversarial struggle. This can make a dramatic difference for those hoping to maintain a civilized relationship post-divorce. While they may not end up best friends, people who move through mediation successfully learn techniques for resolving their differences. This can be life changing, especially for those sharing custody of their children. For couples that decide to separate or divorce, there is no doubt that mediation is a viable alternative to a lengthy and costly legal battle. It empowers people to take charge of their destinies and gives them the tools to successfully get on with their lives. Jann B. Catto is an MSW, a certified divorce financial analyst and divorce mediator. She is the founder and president of TLC Mediation and an independent insurance professional. She resides in Franklin Lakes with her husband and three daughters.

Linda’s List Bedazzling Bergen County

E

very girl deserves a fairy tale day, right? No, silly, I’m not in Kansas. I’m in the greatest county in New Jersey—Bergen County. Not too shabby to start my day in Neiman Marcus (Garden State Plaza, Paramus) with the fashionista legend Benji. OMG, I’m lovin’ these Manolos. In keeping with the Kansas vibe, I close my eyes and click my Manolos twice and voila I’m in Bergen Maserati (145 New Jersey 17 South, Upper Saddle River), aka a toy store for men. Nelson, the GM, pointed into his showroom and told me to pick a car so I could take it for a spin. Trust me, he didn’t have to ask me twice! You may not know that the only color in my spectrum is black, but I threw tradition by the wayside and chose a white Ghibli. Forget dating sites; they pale to the male attention I am getting with this car. Who knew? Unbelievable! Forget the adage about the way to a man’s heart being through his stomach. I’m telling you—drive a Maserati! Not that my everyday wheels are too shabby, but this car is over the top. I confessed that initially I was intimidated to drive it, but it is really female-friendly and you can’t beat its voom-voom appeal. But I better shake a leg, as I don’t want to be late for my appointment at Fair Lawn Dental Associates (25-15 Fair Lawn Avenue, Fair Lawn). I swear Angie is the best hygienist in the universe, and Dr. Mahler—with his nice smile—always pops his head into the room to greet me. No one likes going to the dentist, but the staff and doctors really make it feel like home. Thank you everyone at Fair Lawn Dental for making a visit to the dentist a happy time and place. The cleaning was a piece of cake. (Is it cool to mention a dentist and sugar in the same sentence?) Well, you know what I mean; the process was breezy easy. Don’t you just hate to eat or drink after your teeth are cleaned? I know I do, but I can’t resist the food at Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn (105 Old Bridge Road, New Milford). When I’m bad I have the sausage and broccoli rabe, but today I think I’ll be good and have the Italian Tuna salad. It is so good it reminds me of the tuna salad I had in Positano, Italy, only better because the former has a little kick to it; it’s perfect to pair with my white wine spritzer for a “wow” lunch. Have I ever mentioned how great life is in Linda’s List land? It most certainly is! I need to eat a little slower. I guess I’m anxious to get back into the Maserati. I think I’m getting in touch with my male side. This car is to die for and I’m oh-so tempted not to give it back. I’m really digging all the attention; just sayin’… Ahh, the joys of being single. Did I say being single is a joy? Must be the spritzer talking. LOL Wait! Hot wheels deserve a new outfit and only one place comes to mind— Boutique 811 (811 Franklin Lake Road, Franklin Lakes), which is better known as the candy store for women. Marilyn has such a vast selection of designers and really has something for everyone. Trust me; you will never walk out empty-handed. She has such an exceptional sense of style. See ya soon, Marilyn. I’ve got to go see my good friend Tito at the Tides (1245 Belmont Avenue, North Haledon) since it is practically a stone’s through away. I really love their new addition, which offers a very elegant, spacious and open look. Seeing how beautiful it is, I almost want to get married again... NOT. But how about if I just have a great party there instead. (Don’t tell anyone but in two years

Linda’s List

I’ll be celebrating a milestone Bday, so stay tuned.) Oops, better get a move on if I don’t want to be late for my consult with Dr. Paul Klein (401 Hamburg Turnpike, Ste. 110, Wayne). His bye-bye bunions ad in BC THE MAG sold me. The whole boot thing for weeks has been a major deterrent. Remember, I’m single so the boot look would so cramp my style. What a great consult with a doctor who actually took the time to thoroughly explain the process, and he has a sense of humor, too. Incredible that I can be back in shoes in two weeks, and in sneakers in just one week. Sign me up, Doc! It’s time for my philanthropic high. I think I’ll stop in to see Kim Cesar at Hackensack University Children’s Hospital (30 Prospect Avenue, Hackensack); it is so heartwarming to see the names of my dear friends Dr. and Mrs. Mingi Choi on the wall as I enter the children’s hospital lobby. I know I’m dating myself, but I remember the now Hackensack Medical Center as Hackensack Hospital when it had just one building. Today, it’s grown so large and successful that it seems like a small country. I still have lots more energy in my tank (just call me the Energizer Bunny) and who wouldn’t want to keep driving around in a Maserati, so Morton’s (Shops at Riverside, Hackensack) happy hour here I come. OK don’t pass out but I’m going to have a burger as they are just so good here and a glass of cabernet (Sadly I forgot my teeth cleaning already). Delicious! Then it’s off to the outdoor bar at Stony Hill Inn (231 Polif ly Road, Hackensack). Hey, it’s Thursday night. The outdoor bar is definitely a big hit and there may be a sighting of BC THE MAG publishers Steve and Sharon. Love them to the moon and back! Don’t worry; once the DJ ends outside we take the party inside to the sounds of the one and only Jerry Tolve. Not only is he a DJ, but he can carry a tune too! He has a great voice. Jerry will definitely be my choice for entertainment at my next party. A very special shout-out to Michael, the GM. I thank you, Michael, for your ever-present pleasant smile and kindness. And I just have to mention that the valet service is the most efficient, no matter how busy the place is. Trust me, it’s a happening place, and you have got to try the exceptional food, too. I know Bergen County bedazzled me. I sure hope it bedazzled you. Oh, goody; I get to drive the Maserati home. I hope you had as much fun as I did. Buona notte! See you next time!

A Scentsational Enterprise An entrepreneurial couple elevates the scent category to a new level with their fragrances that offer bug repellent functionality.

T

The alluring scent of fragrance—from a bouquet of fresh cut flowers to the scent of a lush spring meadow—certainly inspires us and impacts our daily living. When that captivating scent includes functionality, everyday experiences are elevated to a whole new level. That’s the case for Aromaflage, a collection of botanical fragrance products that do double duty as insect repellents. This lifestyle brand was founded in 2012 by husband and wife duo Michael and Melissa Fensterstock. The couple merged their passions, intelligence, creativity and business savvy to develop this collection. Before Aromaflage, Michael, who is constantly innovating and chasing his entrepreneurial ideas, worked in a marketing and sales capacity at topnotch firms while Melissa, who describes herself as a “science nerd,” completed degrees at universities such as Harvard Business School and the University of Cambridge. She also worked in the medical and biotechnology industries. With the launch of Aromaflage, the duo struck a balance between marketing and science. Via Aromaflage, the adventure-seeking Fensterstocks were inspired to create an entire new category—fragrance with a func-

tion. These outdoor enthusiasts were on a mission to create functional products that promoted a healthy lifestyle. “We believe consumers want health-conscious products that are also functional and allow them to live their outdoor lifestyles while not coating themselves in harsh chemicals,” Melissa says. The Fensterstocks selected the name Aromaflage because it’s a play on the words “aroma” and “camouflage.” Beyond simply being a product, the Aromaflage brand embodies a concept. “We are taking beauty to the next level by adding functionality. We package every bottle in a baggie rather than using extra cardboard packaging to reinforce our boxes,” Melissa explains. At the core of the six-sku collection is the Aromaflage botanical fragrance and insect repellent, which the couple discovered while enjoying some down time in a remote village in Southeast Asia during their honeymoon. Aromaflage boasts the scent of warm cedar wood, silken vanilla and exotic citrus. It has been rigorously tested in Asian rice patties to ensure its bug-resistant properties. “We source Aromaflage from the jungles of Southeast Asia where we support Burmese refugee women who hand-mix our fragrances. Our supplier houses, educates and provides healthcare to these women as well. Doing well in the world is a value that is very important to us,” Melissa notes. Beyond appealing to outdoorsy types, health advocates and

fragrance junkies, the luxury brand speaks to consumers who truly enjoy entertaining. In fact, the products are often used to usher some scent ambiance—and bug repellent functionality—to outdoor events and weddings. The high performance products recently completed efficacy testing and performed as well as 25% deet products. This spring, the company will unveil Aromaflage WILD, which imparts notes of cardamom, cedar wood and spruce. This spicy scent rounds out the collection, which appeals to both female and male audiences. Melissa and Michael remain committed to creating new scents and products that address the outdoor chic lifestyle. “We’ve started with bug spray and hope to move into other essential oil-driven products,” Melissa says. Items in Aromaflage’s collection generally retail between $30 for an 8-ml. bottle of fragrance to $40 for a candle and $65 for a 50-ml. bottle. The collection is available at approximately 150 retailers and online at Nordstrom.com and Anthropologie.com. Aromaflage is also available locally at Faces Plus Salon, which is located in Wayne. It can also be found at luxury hotels such as Four Seasons, The Ritz-Carlton, Relais & Chateaux and Rosewood. Regina Molaro is a freelance writer who covers art and design, beauty, and fashion. BC Eats In collaboration with local foodie website Boozy Burbs, BC Eats will spotlight all that’s new and exciting on the local restaurant scene.

Bon Fahyr BBQ Buffet 37 Route 303, Tappan, NY 845-680-6631 // bonfahyr.com

Bon Fahyr BBQ Buffet, a new “international” buffet restaurant, has opened right across the New York State Line in Tappan. The 24,000-square-foot restaurant is built in the former Duke’s Ocean Grill location; it boasts seating of 400 in the dining room (with another 200 in the banquet room) for all the diners coming to enjoy the restaurant’s all-you-can-eat offerings. The buffet contains 35+ hot foods with another 30+ cold items. Things like pastas, salads (lots of different American, Italian and Asian favorites), soups, noodles and more. There is a sushi bar with 70+ rolls, sushi, sashimi—plus raw seafood bar—and a selection of desserts complete with two chocolate fountains. All is being overseen by Chef Min, who’s spent much of his culinary career in NYC. Then there’s the BBQ, which is only offered for dinner. With two smokers and a fire pit, the focus is on Texas-style brisket; the restaurant’s consulting chef was brought in from Austin, Texas. They’re using both hickory and oak, depending on the season, and Bon Fahyr will also have ribs, chicken and sausage. The bar contains four wines and three beers on tap, as well as a number of bottled beers, including Texas “import” Lonestar. The price differs slightly from lunch to dinner and weeknights to weekends. The restaurant is operating seven days a week for both.

Terrace Street Café 149 Terrace Street, Haworth (201) 338-4720

The former Haworth Hair Studio space is completely unrecognizable, as it is now the new home of Terrace Street Cafe from Carlos Hernandez. Hernandez, former sous chef at Rocca (Glen Rock) and memoire (Ridgewood), has made the move to eastern Bergen County to showcase his expertise with a variety of different café-type foods. The restaurant is serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with a selection of sandwiches, soups and salads. Lots of daily specials will always be available. Hernandez has set out to create a restaurant that is both delicious and personal, where patrons can interact with him and with each other, offering up their own personalized suggestions on different foods they might want to see at the café. He has also added unique and nuanced touches like their homemade focaccia. Take that focaccia and order the prosciutto di parma panini and you’ll understand the quality Hernandez puts into every bite. Terrace Street Cafe is open 7 days a week, 7am till 6pm on Monday through Saturday, and for brunch buffet, 9am till 1pm on Sunday.

Artisan Kitchen & Bar 142 Goffle Road, Hawthorne 973-310-3333

Artisan Kitchen & Bar, which is serving up “hand-crafted fare & drink,” is now open in Hawthorne. Taking over the former Alex Bistro space, the restaurant is offering Mediterranean casual dining in an “unpretentious, yet sophisticated setting.” The kitchen is helmed by chef/partner Howard Stilianessis, who has spent the last decade and a half in Las Vegas at the Venetian, MGM’s City Center, The Swan and Dolphin at Disney, and most recently at Aria Las Vegas. The menu from chef Stilianessis features farm-to-table ingredients—many of which are organic—with direct sourcing of all produce. Start with the unique fried green peppers and work your way through the menu to the truffle gnocchi, 72-hour braised short ribs or the mushroom stuffed chicken with barley risotto. The menu is full and varied; a vegan menu is also available for those interested. Pastry chef Tanya Newell is handling desserts, all of which are made in house. The bar offers handcrafted cocktails with an emphasis on the “classics.” Spirits are small batch with organic, cold-pressed juices used in many drinks. There are 12 craft beers and seven wines—including prosecco—on tap. Large format beer bottle table service is available as well as a choice of Estate wines. Continued on pg. 120

Cowan’s Public 229 Centre Street, Nutley

973-542-8151 // cowanspublic.com

Cowan’s Public, a new bar/restaurant that replaces The Nutley Pub, has opened just a short drive away in Nutley. It’s owned and operated by brothers Tom and Dean Maroulakous, both with their own past experiences in the biz (Tom was a brewer at High Point Brewery) and paying homage to the building’s history (their father was once a bartender there). The restaurant is serving upscale pub grub consisting of a 15- to 18-item menu with a focus on small plates and sandwiches. Some must-tries are the duck sausage sandwich and the brined pork tenderloin sandwich. Chef Chris Arturo is taking the approach to bring something a bit different in a pub atmosphere, even adding truffle to his grilled cheese and serving chipotle-deviled eggs. There are 16 craft beers on draft, carefully selected for people to experience new things and to be educated in a comfortable and friendly way about the brews. The unique cocktail menu features artisanal spirits and seasonal ingredients. The brothers are going for a mid-30s comfortable “art deco” feel, with exposed brick abounding. The hope is that you feel like you’re in someone’s living room, but of course, there’s a bar there. Cowan’s Public is open 7 days a week till 2am with happy hour daily from 4–7pm.

17 Summer 17 Summer Street, Lodi

973-928-4780 // 17summerrestaurant.com

Since mid-December, details have materialized regarding the new restaurant 17 Summer from the brother/sister (Joseph and Jenna Cuccia) team at Joseph Cuccia Catering. The restaurant is now officially open, bringing the standard of fine dining into a neighborhood setting. Joseph, who’s the executive chef, has created a “hyperseasonal” menu that he plans to change every six to eight weeks. As of now, you can find items such as Quail stuffed with zucchini and beef cheek cavatelli, not to mention their homemade focaccia with Canestrato cheese and Castelvetrano olives. Everything is made in house—Chef Cuccia insists on it—and an open kitchen space lets diners be a part of the action. “We want to feed your soul, excite your palate and entertain you,” says Jenna. The duo also was featured in a March 2015 episode of CNBC’s Restaurant Startup where they had the opportunity to showcase their vision to restaurateur Joe Bastianich and chef Tim Love. The 28-seat restaurant is BYO and open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5-10pm.

Zilpa’s Café 295 Bergen Turnpike, Ridgefield Park 201-641-1300

At the site of the old Nicoletti’s Grill in Ridgefield Park now sits Zilpa’s Café. A restaurant created by 20-year-old Zilpa Rizzo and her family, Zilpa’s is the perfect spot for breakfast on the way to work or a quick and delicious lunch. Serving up Cuban cuisine, Zilpa’s cafeteriastyle restaurant allows you to choose some traditional breakfast items such as egg sandwiches or omelets, or for lunch, Cuban classics such as pulled pork, churrasco, shrimp ceviche or breaded top sirloin. Each dish includes rice, beans, and either a sweet banana or steamed veggies. You can also get authentic empanadas or croquetas, as well as a burger or a Cuban sandwich. However, there’s no talking about Zilpa’s without mentioning dessert. Even when the opening of a café was only a pipe dream, a young Zilpa was already perfecting her mother’s cheesecake recipe from when she was a mere child. Now, those cheesecakes, in a variety of flavors from banana Nutella to Oreo and dulce de leche, have become the talk of the town. Although she keeps the recipes a closely guarded secret, these cheesecakes are a must-try, and perfect for any upcoming event you might be hosting or attending. Zilpa’s Café is open Monday through Friday, 6am-3pm and Saturday 6am-1pm.

Angel on Your Shoulder January

February

March

There are all kinds of angels in our lives. You may find you have a business angel presenting lots of opportunities. Headaches and heartaches seem to be made easier to bear by the angels that seem to show up when you need them. Keep calm when others around you are trying to ruffle your feathers. Keep optimistic and don’t sweat the small stuff, because your angel is waiting right around the corner.

Now is a good time to start looking for that perfect place, as an angel is at your side guiding your way. Your social life is on the rise; your friends will have many events for you to attend. A phone call from someone in your past will bring you a special invite to a reunion that warms your heart and fills you with wonderful memories. But, as your calendar fills, your pockets empty so watch your money.

Sunshine is the cure for better health and happiness. Your spare time will be filled with lots of special events with friends and family. Be careful not to take on too much between work and additional commitments. The emotional stress of juggling it all can get overwhelming. Your angel will assist in finding that happy medium. Now all we need is for you not to shoot yourself in the foot. Help yourself!

April

May

June

Good news shows up on your doorstep. Things that were upsetting seem to fade away. Time for some R&R; make plan for that trip you have been putting off or at least get on a plane and visit family or friends. As your angel looks over you, suddenly you seem to be looking at life with a new set of eyes. You might even find a new hobby or interest.

Stressful situations seem to be just popping up everywhere; you find it hard to keep up. But the tides tend to change and balance will come. Have patience. Legal papers don’t necessarily mean problems, but look carefully at everything before signing or agreeing. Your angel may help you find something special tucked in the back of the closet that you had forgotten about. Enjoy!

Torn between discussions, you find yourself sitting on a fence. Maybe that’s the safest place to be now. Family matters seem to be on the rise; best to not get too involved or offer your opinion. Stay neutral and help where you can. This, too, will end sooner than later. There will be changes in the workplace, possibly leading to more responsibilities and new challenges. Do not stress; take it one day at a time.

July

August

September

You seem happier and your head is clearer. Angels are beside you helping to balance the picture and alleviate the stress. A sudden trip comes from nowhere. Jump on the offer and be ready to go, as this is a guaranteed good time. Outdoor outings, whether it is a walk in the park or attending a barbeque, open the door to meeting new friends and possibly a new love interest.

Find balance with work. Discussions about real estate may result in changes. Angels are getting you to take notice. Someone is out there trying to get your attention by dropping pennies in your path, showing numbers on a clock. If you take the clues and respond, you will see that there are miracles waiting to happen for you. When others try to help, don’t think about it; just take what’s offered!

Wonderful news is waiting to be revealed. Whether it involves your job, home or family, you will soon feel and see that the angels are on your side. Don’t sit on the bench; get in the game of life. Your angel will lead the way. Put caution to the wind. Every now and again, flirt and you will see someone flirting back at you. Ask for a raise and you will get one. Time is ticking and you need to allow change.

October

November

December

You may feel like an angel is walking beside you every step of the way, especially since everything you have been waiting for is finally coming into place. Work has calmed down; your stocks are up. You have balance starting to happen in the home. You may even feel your energy at an all-time high. You seem to have the angel’s touch these days so keep on marching ahead to good times.

Surprise! Life is getting better as those flowers start to bloom and appear everywhere you look. Lucky you! I am sure that angel at your side has helped. And don’t forget friends, who come in handy when you need them. You certainly have learned to appreciate everyone more this year. You will be able to get more done with ease these days, so look forward to a golden opportunity.

Clean up! After that you will be smiling from ear to ear. De-clutter in your home, office and garage. You then may find yourself shopping and shopping. Well, why not? And travel is just around the corner. You will feel great discovering new surroundings; the angels in your life will be helping you even if you may not realize it, so relax and enjoy catching the travel bug.

Last Laugh

Throwing Stones in Glass Houses I

’ve sometimes been called a bull in a china shop, which is strange only because I’ve never actually shopped for china. Wait, is china made in China? Everything is made in China. Are there bulls in China? An answer only Google and 1.7 billion people know. So many questions, though. You can see why I just brush it off. Anyway, that just got me thinking about those silly phrases people say sometimes, which often just make no sense to me. A bird in the hand is worth two in a bush? Please, keep your birds in your bushes, as I’d rather not get the (bird) flu. See what I mean? Not only does that phrase make absolutely no sense, but the only bird I want in my hand has already been deep-fried. Please do not put my KFC in a bush. But hold on, there are more! Oh, so many more!

A fool and his money are soon parted. Oh, please, even if I was going to use an example other than the Kardashian clan, which there is absolutely no need to, clearly, we are the fools who give fools more money!

A leopard cannot change its spots. OK, they can’t, but we don’t have spots. Well, we might, but they usually go away after a quick stint with Proactiv+. Can we change as people? I think so. Is it for the worse most of the time? Probably. Perhaps we should change it to a leopard shouldn’t change its spots because then it’ll probably be a grumpy leopard who doesn’t want to call grandma anymore and is always right about everything.

Actions speak louder than words. I’m pretty sure I actually agree with this one. Though that’s not to imply that words aren’t great, too, lovely magazine readers!

Be careful what you wish for. That’s just silly. I get that often there are unforeseen consequences when you get the thing you wanted, but are those consequences tru-

ly worse than whatever life was before your wish was granted? Or, should we just be really specific with our wishes, crafting such a carefully worded wish that it becomes a rambling rant (you have to watch out for yourself, right?), and the genie falls asleep? What happens then? Nobody knows.

Behind every great man there’s a great woman. Kind of creepy, no? But I guess that this at least gives me the opportunity to hold the door open for her. Chivalry isn’t dead!

The good die young. OK, this is probably my least favorite, mostly because I can’t figure out what it means. First off, is it a good thing? I doubt it. Anyway, you try to dissect it. First off, my grandmother is a sweetheart who lives vibrantly to this day. Yes, grandma, I’ll call you soon... Secondly, though, and all humor aside, I’ve known great people and not-so-great people who have died way before their time, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I think everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy life to their fullest, and in doing so they are not good or bad. How you choose to live your life is totally up to you. After all, people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
