HOLIDAY 2015
Gentlemen, The holidays are upon us, and no time will challenge us to remain gentleman more than these next few weeks. As I sit here typing this, I’ve received over twenty emails telling me there is a sale on something, whether it be shoes, TVs, or flowers, you name it. Then, I hop in my car, and sit in traffic because for some reason, people need new TVs, more shoes, or flowers out there, too! For about one month, it is an endless display of greed, starting literal hours after we sit around a table with our friends and family and act like we are thankful for something. I may sound like a real Grinch here, but I promise, I love gift giving and receiving as much as anyone else. As with my Scotch drinking though, there are limits to everything. Our topic of our cover story this issue is Howie Felixbrod. Howie lives the American dream. A man who started as a bus boy in a restaurant now owns 5 of them, dishing out Mexican cuisine across North Jersey at his extremely popular Blue Moon Mexican Cafés. It wasn’t a quick and easy journey, but Howie once again reminds us that the road to success rarely is. Speaking of business, we sit down with our favorite financial advisor to hear his take on Cuba, and if it makes more sense putting our money in the Cuban tobacco that will be shipping to the U.S., or the Coca Cola we will be shipping there. The holidays aren’t just about spiked eggnog. In fact, some of the most limited quantities of Scotches and cigars both come out around November and into December. While these bottles and smokes may lead to some great casual conversations with the family you’re bound to be spending a lot of time with, they will also offer an escape from them, if you catch our drift. As we approach the New Year, we do like to remind you, and ourselves, of the many people out there who aren’t as fortunate as us. Yes, some brought it upon themselves, but we aren’t here to grandstand. However, there are many who face realities completely out of their control, and our great community can be there to pick them up, and dust them off. Our Giving Guide serves as a great resource for you to connect with some of the great local charities serving to make our community stronger. Lastly, the presents. We compiled a great list of stuff we hope you haven’t seen before, but will look great under the tree regardless. On this year’s hotlist: Drones (of course), watches, and a few cool gadgets that will set you apart from all your neighbors. That, we promise you. With my glass of Caledonian 40 year raised in the air, I wish you the happiest of holidays. Cheers, gentlemen. Brandon Goldstein

Fear not the flowing, growing hair! WRITTEN BY

CHRISTINE MODICA
appy Winter boys, let the Stresstivities begin! Last year we touched upon gift giving and how to give awesome man gifts to the coolest guys you know. Well this year, it’s all about you. Men are generally simplistic creatures, but some of you may grow bored with the same ole thing season after season. Let’s throw some wasabi in your gingerbread cookies this year! This winter, the rules change. Fashion changes, candles change, Starbucks has hot beverages they apparently don’t carry the rest of the year, and we are all trying our damndest to keep off the naughty list. Fret not boys, for I have some pointers to infiltrate your life and make you check yourself yet again. This year, I have some magical pointers to guide you towards putting your hair to its most purposeful roles: warmth and style. Evolution hasn’t taken everything from you, yet. First, let’s evaluate your facial locks before going all crazy and barbarically shaving your Movember gardens off – we’ve put in a lot of time with those. Hold your razor high and channel the general consensus on your beards luster. Do you even like your beard? More importantly, does your wife like your beard? Kids? Boss? Hang onto those beard oils you bought last year, because if last year was any indication on this year’s winter, we are in it for the long haul. We can try to keep your beards shaped, groomed
and purposeful, much like the cavemen we once were, but this time, let’s make them cuter. The beards can stay, as long as they’re groomed and maintained. It’s important that if your beard screams “RUGGED”, it’s got to at least whisper “tame.” Shaving up to your jawline is often my recommendation as the winter cold, as well as high collars and scarves could cause irritation, not to mention the dreaded razor burn. Hang onto a cream moisturizer or aftershave to soothe your skin. The aftershave lotion by Proraso is wonderful, as well as Badricks DaBalm, which cools and calms your skin post shave. Your beard could grow dry, as your skin does. So using balms and oils becomes crucial, and as I’ve mentioned in the past, don’t forget about your beard’s foundation. Proper care will leave your skin soft and you comfortable. There aren’t many things worse than an itchy beard. Beards are now way more acceptable, so we may as well take advantage of that! Movember has been extended this year and only you can make that possible. The power is yours! As for your hair, let’s keep the manbun in 2015. I’m talkin’ the shaved sides with a Samurai knot on top, it’s just... just no. As the new year approaches, it’s up to us to keep regrettable styles in the eighties. This holiday season, as you reminisce over a photo book with random shots of your dad in golden aviators, blue striped running shorts, shin-high socks and Conway Twitty sideburns, don’t laugh too hard: keep in mind that it could all flip on you in the future. If you’re a biker, ponytails are a given, and I won’t sit here and tell you otherwise. The man bun though, that has gone too far, and I’m not alone in thinking that. Right now, as we sip our spiked eggnog, there’s a vigilante crew out there, cruising around, hacking off the buns of unaware victims, shoving ‘em in a jar, and laughing their way to a viral video. I am not against long hair, not at all. I’ve literally been crushing on Trent Reznor for most of my life. Jared Leto tried it, and he looked like a merman. Long hair has always worked for some men. If it didn’t, we wouldn’t have had so vividly recalled Fabio trying to sell us
Be sure to visit Christine at her new location, Stag House Barbershop at 228 Rock Road in Glen Rock
margarine, or Johnny Depp’s versatility. It’s possible to keep long hair especially if you sleep all day and party all night like the LMFAO guys. If you fit this category, I have no other advice to give you. For those who are not rock stars that are considering growing out your locks, long, neat, ponytailed hair with a clean neckline and clean sideburns are perfectly suitable. When it comes to long hair, there’s a fine line between ragged, and well, long hair. You’re going to want it to be known that you still manage it as opposed to just rolling out of bed and tossing a tie in it. Unfortunately, hair loss and ponytails go hand in hand. Just further food for your long hair thoughts. If you’re at a point where you want to start to cultivate some long locks, please let your barber be your guide. Don’t vanish. It’s not good for anyone involved. I’ve had quite a few “I want to grow my hair out” situations with my clients, and I’ve always stressed to them the importance of continuing to trim. This way, hair can remain controlled, healthy and neat. It could be a smooth transition from Mark Wahlberg’s close fade to Bradley Cooper’s flowing medium locks straight into Charlie Hunnam at the tail
end of his debut as an actor, as long as you have a passive, consistent barber on your side to improvise as you grow. It’s a long journey, why take it alone? Hair care also changes once we are dealing with longer hair. Where your short style may have required some shampoo, conditioner and a styling product, long hair may need some extra elements. It’s at this point that you can stop wondering why the hell we take so long to get ready as well as require so much crap in the bathroom. Wavy hair will more than likely require a light balm or oil to calm down the mane, whereas straight hair may require a strong cream while tying it back. Also, the use of conditioner becomes a must. A freaking MUST! Whatever your journey may be this winter fellas, feel free to switch it up in the colder months, even if it means trying new fashion trends instead of hair trends. Either way, I’m here for you. Christine Modica is a leading barberess and stylist, and now the proud owner of Stag House Barbershop and Doe.Tique Salon at 228 Rock Road in Glenrock. Cuban MONEY CRISIS The
Are there investment opportunities in Cuba? WRITTEN BY
L
ast spring, as American and Cuban Presidents Obama and Castro shook hands for the first time since the two countries severed their ties in 1961, plans to normalize U.S. relations with Cuba sparked the first glimmer of investment and trade possibility since John F. Kennedy launched a full economic embargo on the island nation. Now, the country synonymous with the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis may soon be fertile ground for business opportunities that benefit both countries as well as private investors. On the surface there appear to be plenty of similarities in the potential for both Cuban and American investors, but we all know that appearances

can be deceiving. Any potential investments should be examined with personal goals in mind before making any choices. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to view investing in Cuban markets as a clean slate, and before any money changes hands, we should gather all the relevant information, starting with the basics. One of the most basic questions facing today’s investors is whether Cuba will again have a stock market. Cuba’s previous stock market, the La Bolsa de Valores de la Habana, lasted from the 1920s until 1959, when the communist takeover ended private ownership in the country. Some analysts believe a Cuban stock exchange could happen in the
next three to five years, but others are not so certain. The mood and intent of Cuba’s still-communist government will be the determining factor. At the moment, however, there is no Cuban stock market, which obviously limits foreign investment in Cuban companies. Of course, the opening of a US embassy in Havana is just a first step. The two countries won’t enjoy normalization until the US Congress repeals the trade embargo, which will open the door to general tourism. On the American side there already are cruise ship companies, airlines and construction materials firms in the forefront of those that may well benefit quickly from open trade with Cuba. Charter
flights to Havana are available now, with bookings done online. American banks have launched credit and debit card transactions for travel-related and certain other transactions in Cuba. Although Americans traveling to Cuba are now allowed to use their credit and debit cards, it may take a while for Cuba’s technological infrastructure to catch up sufficiently for widespread use. The current financial narrative seems to focus far more on what American companies can expect through establishing a presence in Cuba, as opposed to potential development and export of Cuban goods and services. Anyone who has seen videos of Havana’s taxi service will know instinctively that autos and auto parts probably have a good chance of scoring big in Cuba. And telecommunications and internet services, largely dependent on the liberalization of the island government, stand at the ready. Pharmaceuticals could be in big demand, as well as clothing and food-
stuffs. The issue for the time being is that these products are not manufactured in large volume in Cuba, and the best chance for successful investments will be in those American companies that can fill the demand for their products in Cuba, not vice versa. In fact, three of the top five Cuban exports are sugar, tobacco and liquor. But even the vaunted Cuban cigars probably won’t be able to make much of an impact on trade. For starters, even though the US prohibited direct sales of Cuban cigars in the states, fans of the Cuban tobacco could rather easily obtain their cigars illegally from other countries that did not honor the embargo, such as Canada. Further, Cuban tobacco growers who fled Fidel Castro in the late 1950s and early 1960s continued to use their trademarks on tobacco they started growing in the Dominican Republic and elsewhere. In some cases, the old tobacco trademarks from Cuba are no longer exclusive to the island, creating a situation where cigars are produced
both in Cuba and outside of Cuba under the same brand name. In essence, the best approach to new opportunities in Cuba requires the same level of diligence as new opportunities anywhere. For the moment it appears that investing in firms that have what Cuba needs will produce more opportunities than investing in Cuban firms directly. That may change in the future, and in those cases, the future bears watching.

Land Rover
Range Rover Sport SVR: What is it Like to Drive the Fastest Range Rover in History? WRITTEN BY
RICHARD POSLUSZNY
I
n this day and age, culture drives a lot of conspicuous consumption across the globe. Whether you’re based in Los Angeles or Russia, there’s a good chance that the Kardashian/Jenner clan has made an impact on some of society’s decision making in regards to purchases. It sounds sad, doesn’t it? Well, unfortunately, this is the world we live in. Because of this, certain products have risen to fame off the direct and indirect endorsements from some surgically enhanced, plump lipped and suspect derrière ladies. Land Rover’s more high-end line of vehicles, Range Rover, has fallen victim to this. Has it hurt the brand? It depends on whom you ask. What’s evident though, is that the company’s vehicles are in exceedingly high demand, with long waiting lists and buyers clamoring to get their hands on them. With the competition spitting out AMG sport-utility vehicles and things like the BMW X5M and X6M, it only makes sense for Land Rover’s Range Rover to step up to the plate. Although the press has largely derided the 500 plus horsepower SUV as “nonsensical,” buyers simply can’t seem to get enough of them. This neatly brings us to our subject, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR. While you may already be familiar with the Range Rover Sport, those last three letters are of staggering importance. That’s because this is a much more masculine slant on an already beefed-up SUV. The SVR is a newly developed product that was the brainchild of Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) group. Although I am sure some would characterize this as a skunkworks operation, the reality is it is a formal effort by the automaker that has already brought forth legendary products in the form of the Jaguar E-Type Lightweight Continuation as well as the Jaguar F-Type Project 7. For Land Rover, the first model is the Range Rover Sport SVR. Walking around the SVR, you will note that it looks especially aggressive over the standard Sport model. JLR ensured that it would be differentiated thanks to its new front clip, rear diffuser with integrated quad-tipped exhaust, new wheel and tire package and blue painted Brembo brake calipers. My test vehicle was specified with a black paint job that made this Range Rover look especially sinister. The Range Rover Sport SVR looks like the bad guy in action flicks. Opening the door to the SVR, you’re confronted with a lot of carbon fiber and aluminum accents. What wannabe racers will adore are the race-inspired seats lifted straight out of the Jaguar F-Type. Not only are they more supportive as they feature more aggressive bolstering in the key places — yes, they are inflatable — they also look quite good with their integrated headrest and ability to be equipped with racing harnesses, though I doubt anyone will ever actually use the seats in this manner. In the second row you’ll note that the rear seats get some minor bolstering but probably not anything that would really help in serious cornering. Space is passable but it’s not the Continued on pg. 24

most roomy backseat in the history of Land Rover. If you want more breathability between passengers and more legroom, the reality is you’re going to have to step up to the big daddy Range Rover. For an excess of space, you’ll want to check out the long-wheelbase variant. Equipped with a supercharged, V8 engine that puts out a rather adequate 550 horsepower and just over 500 lb.-ft. of torque, you can say grunt isn’t much of a concern. Mated to this mill is an eight-speed automatic. When put into Sport mode, it switches gears quite fast for a “slushbox” — very impressive work here. Zero to 60 happens in a spritely 4.5 seconds. Considering the SVR weighs in at over 5,100 pounds, this is an accomplishment. Though this sounds mighty impressive, we haven’t even gotten to the

staggering parts yet. Much like the Jaguar F-Type that this Range Rover shares parts with, the SVR makes a magical V8 sound. Not only is it loud, it has the most delightful quirks. Without the exhaust “open” — you can liven it up at the touch of a button — it has a rumbly and bassy tone. Light up the pipes though and you’ve got a beast that requires taming. The thing is that you can’t. Letting off the throttle you’re sure to hear an array of pops and bangs on the overrun and when you touch the go pedal to feed the motor you’ll hear another bang. To say that this Range Rover has character would be an understatement. Though this vehicle weighs in at over two and half tons, it can be put on twisty roads for a bit of fun. It’s certainly not the same fun as a sports car, as the SVR has a much higher
center of gravity and hasn’t been on a balanced diet, but you’ll be sure to giggle here and there when you get the tires squealing as they struggle to find traction. What isn’t funny is the stern warning on the visors making it very clear there is increased rollover risk. I don’t recall that being there on the standard Sport. Although I personally feel you’d have to be trying very hard to achieve that feat, the warning is there for a reason. The SVR may sound like an F-Type and it may have the same engine, but it’s definitely not the same thing. There are other reminders that this is a large SUV. Take, for example, the brakes that have extremely long pedal travel. I had to apply much more pressure than I would have expected in a vehicle equipped with a nice set of Brembos. Honestly, this
Land Rover
Range Rover Sport SVR: provides a driving position that’s up high so you can see all four corners of the vehicle — remember, these are purpose-built off-roading vehicles. Driving down Manhattan’s 14th Street I felt like the king of the castle. While driving through a torrential rainstorm, I realized that all hell could be breaking loose outside of the vehicle yet I would not care. I’d just raise the suspension to its highest level, dial up the music’s volume and meander to my destination. Ride quality is better over the competition as the SVR is able to absorb bumps much better. Once in a blue moon you’ll get caught off guard by a rogue dimple in the pavement, but they are few and far between. Rather than feel like an SUV mimicking a sport car’s suspension it seems like Land Rover didn’t change much in this department. This means you
was one of the SVR’s sour points for me as a vehicle with this much power and heft should have more immediate stopping power. This was not an issue in a BMW X5M I recently drove. As noted before, you can push the Range Rover in the corners but I am not sure how long you’ll want to. That’s because as I’ve noted before, it does weigh a lot. That means you feel that weight wherever you go with the SVR. While other automakers building high horsepower SUVs have been able to make their products feel more nimble, that isn’t the case with the menacing Land Rover. It feels much more like a tank, which is great for around town motoring but bad for when you want to hit some apexes. The good news, however, is that the vault-like experience I describe does translate well when you’re in New York City. Land Rover always
get essentially the same ride as you would in a standard Range Rover Sport. Overall though, it’s a nice, isolated feeling that prioritizes comfort over feeling every crevice in the tarmac. For me though, I think I’d rather not have the SVR. That’s because at its price of $111,350 I could have a big daddy Range Rover long wheelbase. While the Sport SVR sure does let me have some laughs, at the end of the day it’s not differentiated enough over the standard Sport for me to lose sleep over it. And when we’re talking dollar for dollar, there’s nothing quite like the long wheelbase flagship. The LWB does everything you think it’d do, but better. And that’s what I’d want out of my Range Rover. Unfortunately, the SVR just feels a bit too much like it’s trying to be something it’s not, just like those Kardashians.

Jaquet Droz The Grande Seconde Deadbeat The Independent Second was at its peak in the 18th century. Jaquet Droz pays tribute to this complication with the updated version of this iconic model, equipped with a new caliber. A miracle of watchmaking, the Independent (or “Deadbeat”) Second is a very rare complication created during the Age of Enlightenment. The direct-drive seconds hand no longer advances in a linear fashion, but rather by making a small jump every second, giving extremely accurate measurements. This complication ultimately led to the birth of the chronograph. For the new model, the dial has been subtly reworked by Jaquet Droz designers. The seconds hand, off-centered in the original version, is now placed at the very heart of the dial. At the same time, the retrograde date indication takes the space that is traditionally used by the seconds hand in the Grande Seconde collection. For the Grande Seconde Deadbeat, a silicon balance-spring has been used for the movement. A material, unaffected by magnetic fields or changes in temperature and pressure insures exceptionally accurate timekeeping. The combination of Independent Second, Calendar, Hour and Minute functions resulted in the creation of this new caliber, for which a patent has been applied for. Available at The Timepiece Collection, Englewood

How to be a
better date in 2016! WRITTEN BY
JULIANNE CANTARELLA
S
o, here’s the rub. I represent men for matchmaking and I relationship-mentor women. Everyday, women share examples of how (some) men sabotage potential relationships with negative behaviors. Some negative behaviors are more common than others‌ I suspect, you would never engage in self sabotaging negative behaviors, but just in case, let me cover the behaviors which will ensure your dating success in 2016. Continued on pg. 34
Continued from pg. 33
Take things slowly: Too much, too soon is the biggest red flag I see. If you want to win her heart and not scare her away, pace yourself. It’s wonderful when you plan a date, but certainly don’t plan to move in together on the 6th date. It’s appropriate to talk about the future, but not the rest of your lives together. If you really found someone who is a keeper, take things slowly. If it’s meant to be she is not going to find someone else to replace you.
Build Communication: Yes, it takes two, but if you want to be a better date in 2016 STOP TEXTING so much! Pick up the darn phone and call her! Texting creates a false sense of intimacy allowing you to believe the relationship is much more than it is, and there could be loss of tone or intent, which can really mess with growing a cohesive relationship. It doesn’t take much to call, and doing so will set you apart from all the other single men out there.
Be Interested: I get it, you meet someone new and your heart is all a flutter. She’s everything you’ve been looking for and more. Your intention is to connect with her by sharing personal information, and that’s great! However, it’s really not all about you. The best way to grow intimacy is sharing, but it should be reciprocal. Asking about who she is and what her hopes and dreams are will help you determine if she is the fit for you, while making her feel special too.
Be Appropriate: Oh no you did not! I am sorry, but sexting is a big no-no, especially in the early stages of getting to know her. Yes, I’ve have had many women tell me (and show me) the inappropriate photos men have sent. Then they ask me “why would they do this Julianne?” Goodness gracious, you may have your reasons, but let me tell you… It’s not a good one; so don’t do it! Be thoughtful and treat her with respect at all times. Honestly, it makes a quality woman feel cheap and as if you view her that way.
Be Thoughtful: It could be remembering her favorite latte or favorite flavor of ice cream. It could also be something as simple as opening the car door, but by making small thoughtful gestures it says she is important to you and you are investing in the relationship. Quality women notice these types of behavior and appreciate them. They also bring her closer to you and make you a great date! It’s very simple really: the biggest expectation women have is that you treat her like a lady and don’t come on like gangbusters. A quality woman wants a quality man, someone thoughtful, who communicates clearly. 2016 can be your year. The year to find someone wonderful if you just approach it seriously and apply the aforementioned points. Wishing you a wonderful New Year with much love!

CHARITY GUIDE
T
he hustle and bustle of daily life can sometimes make us lose sight of what is truly important. It’s the holiday season that provides us with that annual reminder to come back down to Earth. While surrounded by our family and friends, we reflect on the great times we spent together in the past, and revel in the traditions that will keep us close many years into the future. The holiday season has also become synonymous with giving. Each year, millions of people open their hearts, and their wallets, for causes that affect some deeply, and others not at all. Our extraordinary charitable generosity is just another trait that distinguishes Americans from so much of the rest of the world. As we volunteer our time, or donate to those who need it the most, we help shape and change the lives of people we may never even meet. Here, we provide a small, select list of the many charitable foundations working to make each day better for so many people. It is our hope you will be inspired by one or more of them to offer them your support.
Urology Care Foundation Focus: Urologic diseases Website: www.urologyhealth.org The Urology Care Foundation is the nation’s leading urologic health charity, promoting research, advocacy and education in an effort to ultimately cure urologic diseases. Now, if you’re a little unclear about exactly what urology is, don’t be ashamed. Urology deals with more than just the diseases of the male and female urinary tract; it also focuses on the male reproductive organs so you can rejoice in the knowledge that someone is looking after you-know-what. The Urology Care Foundation is a premier and mainstream organization involved across the whole spectrum of urology advocacy. One of its key areas of advocacy is expressed in its “Let Your Voice Be Heard” campaign, which urges the public to press Congress to support the Training and Research in Urology (TRU) Act.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Focus: Helping all children achieve success in life Website: www.bbbsnj.org The mission of this organization is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The organization also provides support in the form of scholarships and special needs appropriations to agencies that serve and protect Bergen County communities.
Diabetes Research Institute Foundation Focus: Diabetes Website: www.diabetesresearch.org The largest and most comprehensive diabetes research center dedicated to curing diabetes, the DRI is aggressively working to shrink the timeline toward the discovery of a biological cure for this disease. Multidisciplinary teams of scientists, together with international collaborators, are bridging cell-based therapies with emerging technologies to restore insulin production in patients with diabetes.
Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County Focus: Affordable housing for needy families Website: www.habitatbergen.org Its mission is to provide decent, affordable homes for hardworking Bergen County families. CHARITY GUIDE Homes Fit for Heroes Focus: War veterans Website: www.homesfitforheroes.net The group was founded on the following principles: that as Americans we have a duty to support those that fight with honor and make sacrifices to protect the freedoms that we so often take for granted; that there is no greater honor than to extend a hand to a wounded soldier and his family; that if we want the United States of America to be the greatest country in the world we too need to sacrifice and be custodians of freedom. Accordingly, the Homes Fit for Heroes Foundation was established to provide wounded Special Operations warriors with shelter from the storm allowing them to recover from their injuries with the comfort, dignity and respect they deserve.
Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation (SKTCF) Focus: Testicular cancer Website: www.seankimerling.org Established in memory of Sean Kimerling, an Emmy Award-winning anchor of CW11 sports and pre-game announcer for the New York Mets whose life was cut stark short in his prime, the SKTCF is dedicated to raising awareness of testicular cancer and highlighting the importance of self-examination. The Foundation has received praise for its unique social marketing approaches, including some pretty hilarious viral videos (type “Check your balls” in YouTube for further clarification). The message is clear and simple: No man should die from testicular cancer. Perform self-examinations often and get over the stigma of seeing your doctor. It might just save your life.
Zero Focus: Prostate cancer Website: www.zerocancer.org ZERO, The Project to End Prostate Cancer, takes a hard stance on prostate cancer; hence the name. The idea: ZERO means zero prostate cancer deaths, zero prostate cancer cases and for those with the disease, a zero PSA. With its hard-line message comes aggressive campaigning, which includes ZERO’s Drive Against Prostate Cancer campaign, the only national mobile screening program for prostate cancer. Be sure to keep your eye out for the ZERO Drive vehicles; they’re sleek 39-foot mobile screening buses offering no-appointment prostate screening exams. Best of all: The Drive buses feature flat-screen TVs with satellite cable for your viewing pleasure while you wait. It’s the only way to go!

Bow Ties Back in 2012, David Kramer and David Mutter took on a new challenge when they bought Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont. Since then, the two business gurus have demonstrated their superb management skills as they have spread their passion for this magical piece of menswear WRITTEN BY
B
TARA DELORENZO
ow ties are definitely in style these days, but Bill Kenerson, the founder of Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont had been wearing them, and later making them, for quite some time. Kenerson knew a thing or two about manufacturing a quality bow tie. Naturally, when he was looking to sell his company, Kenerson wanted to make sure he would hand over the keys to the right set of hands. It took a little time for David Kramer and David Mutter to win him over, but it’s clear that Kenerson made the right choice. Kramer and Mutter met when they were earning their MBAs from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. After graduation, their careers took them down different paths, but their families always stayed in touch. “Going into business together was never the question,” Mutter said. “It was always ‘when,’ not ‘if.’” A few years ago, that “when” started to come into focus. The self-described “restless company men” were eager to find something new. In 2012, Kramer was an investment banker, and Mutter was the CEO of a small building products manufacturer. They were both entering their mid-40s with the feeling that something was missing. Kramer and Mutter were actively searching for a domestic manufacturer, and they were fortunate enough to find Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont even though they entered the game late in the interviewing process. However, for these two hopefuls looking to acquire a company, it was not smooth sailing from the start. In fact, many candidates were looked at before them, and the representatives of the company did not feel they were the best candidates for the job. Slightly disappointed but extremely determined, Kramer and Mutter decided to take matters into their own hands. They wrote a letter to Kenerson and his wife Deb in which they introduced themselves and outlined their goals. Afterward, Bill and Deb agreed to talk to them. The four of them hit it off and the rest is history. “As a customer of Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont prior to acquir-

ing the company, I marveled at the craftsmanship of the ties and the company’s professional service,” Mutter said. “Basically, before I was an owner, I was a fan. In the end, it was this enthusiasm for the company, its people and its products that convinced the prior owners that me and my colleague, Dave Kramer, were the right people to carry on their legacy.” Both Kramer and Mutter were excited about the prospects of creating jobs right here in the United States. According to Mutter, this is something that they are really passionate about. Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont is made up of a couple dozen employees, so they are slightly larger than some small businesses. Still, it is a tremendous thrill when the team grows. “When the team grows, we cannot help but feel a genuine sense of pride,” Mutter said. In addition to their eagerness to make more jobs available, Kramer and Mutter also love to develop stronger longterm relationships with their clientele. When working with customers for a wedding, Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont will send customers multiple free fabric swatches so that brides and grooms they meet will feel confident about the fabrics and colors they choose. With that level of service, the customers move from preparing for their wedding to purchasing bow ties for everyday wear. Mutter credits part of the company’s success to its unique and efficient customer service. In order to keep the team well-informed and hands-on, they are all located in the production facility in Middlebury, Vermont. With that promised, high-quality service, and their vision for their company, Mutter and Kramer look to stay close to what Kenerson had hoped for when he founded Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont. Unlike some new owners, Kramer and Mutter didn’t want to come in and change everything. They wanted to focus on the same three values the founders of the company had prioritized over two decades ago: a large selection, personalized customer service and fairly priced products. “We purchased Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont, because it was a great company,” Mutter said. “Therefore, our actions should be evolutionary, not revolutionary. Call us in 20 years; I bet we’ll still be focused on these three core values.” Bow ties have become more fashionable recently so the biggest challenge has been inventory. “As the premier manufacturer of high-end handmade bow ties, the explosion in popularity in the category over the last 15 years puts us in the difficult position of having to tell our customers—many of whom have been with us for 20 years—we’re sold out,” Mutter said. Still, the company is confronting the inventory battle head on in order to put out high-quality products for customers to wear for all occasions. Mutter noted that over the past few years, there has been a cultural shift and bow ties are gradually replacing standard ties. According to Mutter, bow ties are “leading the way” in the occupational environment, and he and Kramer are following their passion for the fashion accessory to help keep that trend growing. “Bill [Kenerson] loved bow ties and so do Dave and I,” Mutter said. “Frankly, bow ties course through the DNA of everyone at Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont.” To check out the selection, head to www.beautiesltd.com.

THE COLD CLOSE
The Lyin’ in Winter WRITTEN BY

he holiday season is supposed to be a tranquil period of peace, love, and good will toward man. From what I’ve noticed, it’s actually a wonderful opportunity to lie, cheat, and be more deceitful than you could possibly be at any other time of the year. How jolly! Let’s start with the most obvious opportunity for self-serving deception: Santa Claus. For those of us who celebrate Christmas, Santa Claus is a wonderful tool with which to control our children for an entire month. From Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, parents will evoke the name of Kris Kringle to coerce our kids to behave.

MIKE MORSE
Don’t even get me started on the Elf on a Shelf or Mensch on a Bench! “Timmy, if you don’t pick up your Legos, Santa won’t bring you any presents,” a harried mom or dad will exclaim after a little plastic brick gets embedded in their foot for the third time that day. And you know what? The usually slovenly Timmy will hear that threat and clean up those Legos faster than Usain Bolt on cocaine. Santa is the only holiday character that gives parents this level of manipulation. Warning a child that the Easter Bunny, or St. Valentine, or Uncle Sam, or Leafy Larry The Arbor Day Sassafras Tree might bypass your house if they don’t behave does not carry anywhere
near the clout of the threat of dear old St. Nick leaving Junior high and dry on Christmas. Timmy would have gotten presents anyway, of course. It doesn’t matter how bad a child you are, you are going to get presents. I’m sure even young Adolf Hitler got Christmas presents. Now, I don’t know what kind of a kid Hitler was, but, based on his later work, I have to assume that he was what is called, in polite circles, a “problem child.” Of course, the Santa tactic is a double-edged coin, because on Christmas morning, when your kiddies are up to their elbows in torn wrapping paper and shredded toy boxes, parents
discover that their leverage has completely dried up. “Timmy, pick up all this garbage right now,” his father will plead. Timmy will look up from his newly acquired Xbox, stare right at his dad, and utter his first post-Christmas lie. “Sure… sure I will…,” he’ll say, knowing full well that the jolly fat man who has kept him in check for the last thirty days is now halfway back to the North Pole and that he doesn’t have to do a damn thing his parents say for another eleven months. But the winter dishonesty and duplicity doesn’t end at our children. We use this season to blatantly lie to our significant others. In fact, we welcome these untruths. When it’s the middle of December and your spouse grabs the car keys and announces, “I’ll be back in a few hours,” you smile and cheerfully wave goodbye as they saunter out the door. For all you know, they could be heading out to join a motorcycle gang and rob an orphanage. Or they could be selling nuclear weapons to ISIS. But
what YOU’RE thinking is, “Ooh! They’re out buying presents for me!” Yes, you’ll turn a blind eye to all of those nightmarish scenarios just so you can unwrap a new set of golf clubs or a 24 carat diamond necklace on Christmas morning. In fact, if you’re feeling stressed and need some time alone during the holidays, just throw a few ribbons and tubes of wrapping paper on your bed. If your spouse tries to enter the bedroom, just yell “I’M WRAPPING!!!,” and they will exit immediately, images of golf clubs or necklaces dancing in their heads. Play your cards right, and you won’t have to see your entire family for most of December! Of course, family members aren’t the only victims of deceit in the winter months. The cold weather brings ample opportunities to lie to bosses, co-workers, and friends as well. When cold and flu season is at its peak, who hasn’t called into work brandishing a stuffed-up, Elmer Fuddlike voice? “Hewo? I won’t be coming to
wouk today. I’m vewy, vewy sick,” you wheeze into the phone, accenting your dastardly fib with a few wellplaced fake coughs and sneezes executed to perfection. Or how about when you’re invited to a dinner party at an acquaintance’s home, an acquaintance you’re not very fond of, but who has great Giants season tickets so you don’t want to insult him by not going? If it’s January, you can call him and say, “I was really looking forward to being at your party, but the weather is just too darn bad to go out tonight.” Of course, if the invitation was to attend the Miss USA Hot Tub And Free Alcohol Party, you’d rent a sled and a team of Siberian huskies to get there. On and on the fraudulence and chicanery goes, until spring finally thaws the web of lies you’ve weaved throughout the winter months. But hey, if you’re lucky, at least you’ve got a nice new set of golf clubs to show for it. It’s all in good fun though, right? As Mickey Mantle once said, “He who has the fastest golf cart never has a bad lie.”
