SPRING 2015

Gentlemen, The time has come. We can walk outside once again without fear of slipping on ice. It’s spring, and that means we can finally do all of those things we haven’t been able to do for months because of the bitter cold. Yes, I’m saying we can watch baseball and smoke cigars. Remember barbecuing? It’s really great, in case you forgot. We can do that again too. We can finally play golf! The beloved sport we’ve only been dreaming of for the past several months is returning to us. Those snow-capped hills have begun to make way for lush greens. Bergen County’s country clubs will soon be buzzing with excitement, and none will be more electric than White Beeches Golf and Country Club in Haworth. After a winter aimed at changing the old “stuffy” country club stigma, White Beeches has been eagerly anticipating the chance to reopen its doors and show everyone why it’s such a great club. Did I mention baseball? Our national pastime is back but it will certainly be a strange year for the Yankees. There will be no Derek Jeter in the Bronx and unfortunately it doesn’t look like there’s an heir to fill the void left by #2. Over in Queens, Mets fans are hopelessly optimistic as another season begins with high expectations. By July, that optimism will almost certainly shift to the usual feeling of discontent. Maybe I’m wrong. Now that it’s finally above 40 out there, we can smoke our stogies outside. With the help of Mike Duch, our “Purveyor of Fine Puffs” from our Holiday 2014 issue, we’ve started a new section called Vino e Sigaro. In this exciting new feature, Mike will take a look at a cigar, and then his partner Steph will focus on a fine wine. Now it’ll be easier than ever for you to pretend like you know what you’re smoking and drinking. There are still plenty of potholes to repair from this winter’s destruction, but I’ve already seen a few sports cars roaring down our highways and local roads. Seeing the Porsches and Corvettes out there brings an instant smile to my face. Richard Posluszny has been our car guy for a while now, and we asked him to share some of his favorite driving roads in the country with us for another exciting new section: Richard’s Top 5. Check out his review of the beautiful Jaguar F-Type R Coupe as well. Picking up on the theme here? We’re getting out of the house. Now, I don’t know about you, but all of that snow kept me away from the gym. Now is the time when summer bodies are made. Christopher Blake from HNH Fitness shared a few hints with us that will help us all get back in shape. This spring, don’t look in the mirror while you’re at the gym. Trust him on this one. Once you’re back in shape, the last step is completing the look. Our favorite personal stylist, Candace Kristin, took a trip to Neiman Marcus and gave us the scoop on the coolest trends for spring 2015. They might not all be for you, but a few of these little accessories will go a long way in helping you stand out from the crowd. Enjoy the warmer air and the beautiful spring nights. Now is the time to shed that laziness and replace it with happiness. This is the start of the best time of the year. Let’s enjoy it. Cheers, Brandon Goldstein

BASEBALL PREVIEW

Did the Giants and Dodgers Really Have to Leave? The future might look bright on paper for the New York Metropolitans, but as a lifelong fan, I’m not buying it. I’ve heard this same old song and dance before WRITTEN BY

A

nother year, another offseason full of semi-sincere optimism. Yep, you guessed it: It’s almost time for the Mess—er, Mets— to take the field. In the short span of time when the Mets have played at their still sparkling Queens confines, the team has never won more than 79 games in a season. Ouch. Maybe they’ll break .500 this year. Let’s just be honest with ourselves right off the bat. The Mets still kind of suck. Is Matt Harvey primed to be the

BRANDON GOLDSTEIN

king we need in the County of Queens? Is Michael Cuddyer the missing piece of the blue and orange puzzle? Is it wrong for me to doubt David Wright? Is there anything “grand” about Curtis Granderson? Will the Wilpons ever elope with Jim Dolan, sell their teams, and let their fans celebrate a championship? That’s what’s on my mind right now, folks. I may be a cynic when it comes to my ball club but I can’t ignore the fact that the Mets seem to have a compe-

tent nucleus of young talent…and the kids have shown some promise. Still, how can I honestly believe in sustained success out in Flushing when time and time again I’ve looked like a fool? Jacob deGrom won the NL Rookie of the Year just about eight short months ago, and right now, he’s the Mets’ golden child. Why shouldn’t he be? I’d like to believe that Matt Harvey could bounce back from Tommy John surgery and put in a Cy Young-caliber season, but there’s just too much uncer-

tainty there. Some say Harvey’s velocity will increase, thus making his potent repertoire of pitches even deadlier. Others vehemently disagree. We just won’t know until he gets started. In an ideal world, Harvey would emerge as the Opening Day ace we all want him to be, but it looks like he won’t make his 2015 debut until the first Mets home game. David Wright, the golden child turned man-child, is also a bit of a question mark heading into 2015. First off, if you are hurt, man up and say you’re hurt! Don’t try to play through it and increase the chances that the injury will become more severe. Take a few games to get some rest and come back out as the Wright we all know you can be. Wright’s long contract is proof that the Mets believe in him. He’s the face of the franchise, and now he needs to earn back our faith in him. Oh, de Du-da day! Lucas Duda looks ready to duplicate his above av-

erage 2014 season. If the Mets want to top the .500 mark for the first time since 2008, they’ll need every single one of his 30 home runs. I just hope he’s been juicing—the all-natural, fruit and veggie kind, of course. Then there’s good ol’ Danny Murphy. Remember the days when we had to try to stomach a bumbling Murphy adjusting to the outfield? Those days are over, and the new, more competent second baseman Daniel Murphy looks to make the 2015 season just as glorious as the last one when he earned his first appearance in the All-Star Game. Now, let’s talk Granderson. In Detroit, he was The Grandy Man. In the Bronx, he wasn’t too shabby. Now that he’s in Flushing, he’s mediocre and overpaid. Of course that’s the case: He’s a Met. Signing Granderson was the quintessential Wilpon move: sign an over-the-hill guy with some name recognition, get little-to-no production

out of him, pay him a bajillion dollars and watch him sail off into retirement on a boat of cash. Can we get 20 home runs out of him again this season? I wouldn’t put money on it. The bullpen is a huge question mark heading into 2015. My father, in typical Mets fan fashion, actually thinks they’ll be good this year. As for me, I’ll just say it’s a work in progress. Hey guys, it really ain’t so bad. I’m being a little melodramatic and we still have Citi Field! It’s truly beautiful and a wonderful place to watch a game in the summertime. Unfortunately, the architects were so kind as to make it a pitcher’s park when the Mets didn’t have anyone capable of throwing close to 100. Now they have the arms. Let’s just hope the bats can come through from time to time. This season, expect a lot of 2-1 and 3-2 games. Maybe this is the year the orange and blue will be on the winning side of most of ’em. Play ball!

Spring Styles It’s time to pick out some cool new accessories for spring. We headed over to Neiman Marcus in Garden State Plaza to have Candace Kristin, our esteemed personal stylist, show us the latest in men’s fashion

Sunglasses Sunglasses are both fashionable and practical. You can own several pairs in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. This season, don a pair with that retro American look and feel. These frames have increased visibility thanks to Hollywood’s celebs sporting them everywhere. Put them on, and you’ll instantly feel stylish. Mirrored metallic sunglasses by Ray-Ban Clubmaster

Loafers This season, you will see a contemporary spin on traditional designs while shopping in the shoe department. The loafer is no exception, with options in an array of bold hues, tassels and beaded adornments. Look for a pair with a rugged sole in a color such as grey or white.

Gucci

Travel Accessories Now more than ever, designers are incorporating chic and stylish pieces for the well-traveled man into their lines and this season is no exception. There are a number of great looking carry-on bags, dopp kits and this season’s key essential: the backpack. Travel tote, dopp kit and backpack by Tom Ford

SPRING 2015

Briefcase The briefcase has always been a vessel for carrying your documents. Now it’s a very trendy and chic accessory piece for the working man.

Astor Dorilton briefcase by Tumi

Timepieces This season’s trend is the sport/diver watch. These are meant to be waterproof while scuba diving in deep waters, but they are also appealing for the man above sea level. Look for intricate details, rubberized bands, unidirectional rotating bezels and one or more sub-dials. Note: Most casual watch wearers will never even need to know what most of the dials are for, and that’s perfectly OK. Opt for one with a bold colored face and bezel.

Rope Bracelets Over the past year, bracelets for men have exploded in the marketplace. More and more designers are jumping on board and introducing unique pieces. If you browse the accessory case at Neiman Marcus, you will see many different options for every discerning eye. Ready to rock this look? Stack a couple! Look for bracelets that incorporate leather, beads or nylon, and make sure it has an adornment such as an interesting silver clasp or silver motif like a skull or anchor. Dressed Up Sneakers Once again, designers incorporated the “athletic-inspired” look into their lines this season. This trend also includes the “dressed up” sneaker that is worn outside of the gym, but never in it. Look for all-leather high tops with larger laces and metal embellishments.

Giuseppe Zanotti

Cuff Links

RT by Tateossian London

Office professionals aren’t the only people who wear cuff links. Forget the tried and true boring silver ones. This accessory has experienced a resurgence and they are worn every day of the week, mostly due to the influx of really cool designs available right now. Cuff link companies have created lines that include unusual and whimsical styles for men with all tastes. Make these a talking piece and be sure to select plenty of other fun ones.

Tie Clips Shows like “Mad Men” have led to the resurgence of this accessory. For the stylish male who likes to dabble in that bygone era, the tie clip is now as fashionable as it is functional. More and more jewelers are putting their own spin on the trend and creating ones with embellished silver bars or colored metals. Some even take the forms of sharks or daggers.

Floral Ties

Bold floral prints by Ermenegildo Zegna. Navy and white tie by Tom Ford

Borrowing from the ladies, floral prints have made their way into menswear again this season. The floral motif for the men, however, is much more dark and bold and less bright and delicate, which creates a much more masculine approach to the petal trend. Try it out on ties like these, or on a pocket square.

Sterling silver skull ring by David Yurman

Ring Over the last several seasons, jewelry designers have introduced rings into their men’s lines. This statement is not for the weary, but rather the bold at heart. If you are going to try a ring, try one with attitude. Rings with skull motifs or thick embellished silver are stylish.

Lapel flowers by Edward Armah

Lapel Flowers Lapel flowers provide a great opportunity to stand out and achieve a look that is personal, fresh and original. It’s an opportunity to make a fashion statement and demonstrate good taste and an eye for detail. This season, look for ones in bold colors or a printed pattern like polka dots or plaid.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

In this special Goat Edition, we feature two masterpieces from Jaquet Droz and Ulysse Nardin

Y

ou may not know or care, but 2015 is the Year of the Goat according to the Chinese zodiac. Even if you were born in a “goat year” (1943, ’55, ’67, ’79, ’91), you probably didn’t have any clue, though your calm and gentle nature should have clued you in that you were much more goat—and much less dragon. We don’t place much emphasis on the Chinese zodiac here in the United States, but Jaquet Droz and Ulysse Nardin, two of the world’s finest watch manufacturers, have taken to the Chinese New Year and the zodiac cycle to display some of their rarest watchmaking techniques. Without further ado, let’s take a look at these one-of-a-kind timepieces.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Relief Goat

A new tradition has been established: Every Chinese New Year, Jaquet Droz observes the change in the zodiac cycle with a model celebrating a rare technique or new skill practiced in its Ateliers d’Art. Known by its twin stars, it is a way for Jaquet Droz to pay tribute to its ties with China that date back to the 18th century. At the beginning of the Year of the Goat, Jaquet Droz launched two new models in honor of the animal—a symbol of imagination, creativity and a world of pastoral riches. The form of this creature recalls the nourishment that it provides,

34

SPRING 2015

and presents a real aesthetic challenge when it comes to reproducing it on the dial of the Petite Heure Minute model. The artisans of the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d’Art, who live and breathe this sense of challenge, decided to represent not just one goat, but three. Springing from the summit of an imaginary mountain, like an allegory of achievement and the hope of success for the year ahead, the three animals astonish with their striking realism. The skillful touch of the master artisans allows for each element of the body and each minute detail to be thrown into relief in three dimensions. The end result is all the more captivating against the backdrop of a stylized dial that evokes a plum blossom motif in pure and simple lines. Together with bamboo, chrysanthemum and orchid, plum blossom is one of the four noble flowers that was featured in Chinese iconography over 1,600 years ago. Unfolding their petals in winter, these blooms are an early herald of the promises of spring and youth rediscovered. They stand out against a background of white mother-of-pearl or black onyx, two materials that reappear on the underside of an oscillating weight surmounted by a ram’s head. To create the stylized plum blossom, “meihua” in Chinese, the Ateliers d’Art used an enameling technique

called champlevé. This particularly demanding technique guarantees a result of exceptional delicacy. The metal is hollowed out according to the desired design and the hollows are then filled with enamel, fired and hand-polished. The finished dial is reminiscent of the exquisitely fragile masterpieces of “Jianzhi,” the Chinese art of paper cutting that dates from the middle of the first millennium. Limited to just 28 pieces each, these two models work equally well in the fresh palette of white gold and Jaquet Droz blue and in the warm tones of red gold paired with a delicious wine burgundy. As precious good luck charms anticipating all the triumphs and successes of the New Year, they will delight both connoisseurs and collectors in the know.

Ulysse Nardin Classico Goat

The goat is the eighth animal sign in the Chinese zodiac and it stands independently, preferring the solace of introspection and observation. A dependable, calm and intelligent creature, the goat shines in creativity. Ulysse Nardin celebrates its individualistic and artistic character with the new Classico Goat timepiece, a champlevé enameling creation. As one of the select few watchmakers dedicated to this rare, centuries-old art, Ulysse Nardin presents a lifelike

depiction of the goat, employing the intricate champlevé method much like the Jaquet Droz, and made possible only by the hands of true masters. For more than 25 years, Ulysse Nardin has brought this realism to its dials through the art of enameling. In 2011, it furthered its commitment to this expertise by acquiring Donzé Cadrans, the famed artisan enameler. This acquisition only elevated Ulysse Nardin’s position as a true manufacturer of high horology. A limited-edition series, the Classico Goat features the self-winding, COSC-certified UN-815 movement, visible through its sapphire crystal exhibition window located on the case back. It has a power reserve of 42 hours and is water-resistant to 50 meters. Boasting engineering excellence coupled with the mastery of enameling, the Classico Goat is a timepiece of reliability and quiet beauty ideal for the free-spirited individual who is content with himself, yet savors the company of others, just like many of our esteemed readers. For more information on the Petite Heure Minute Relief Goat or the Classico Goat, visit The Timepiece Collection at 58 E. Palisade Avenue in Englewood.

Current healthcare mandates do very little to distinguish between physicians. No cookie cutters here. Just the top guns. The Vanguard Surgical Center is a state of the art multi-specialty surgical facility located in Maywood, NJ. In response to our rapidly changing healthcare landscape and the Affordable Care Act, several prominent subspecialty surgeons envisioned a place where innovative surgical care could be delivered by an outstanding cadre of surgical specialists alongside hand-picked anethesiologists, nurses and support staff. We are doctor owned and operated and only the most highly skilled surgeons with impeccable judgment can obtain surgical priviledges to operate at Vanguard. We invite you to become part of a level of surgical care which is indeed transformative and will serve as the model in an area of healthcare reform. Â

As tempting as it may be to turn sideways and look into the mirror, cervical rotation under a load is never a good idea for your spine, neck and back muscles. Don’t do this.

JULIANNE CANTARELLA

SPRING 2015

SO DOES ANY OF THIS SOUND FAMILIAR? Are you judging her rather than trying to get to know her for the quality woman she is? I hope the points I’ve shared will cause you to pause and give serious thought to the wonderful women you might have passed up on. There is no such thing as perfection, but I’m sure that you might be pleasantly surprised by someone you might have otherwise passed on if you give her a chance.

Julianne Cantarella, MSW, LSW is New Jersey’s Premier Relationship Expert. She is a former therapist turned matchmaker and dating/relationship expert. A native of Bergen County, Julianne is dedicated to helping mature singles in the Garden State find love. She offers matchmaking and date/ relationship coaching through her company, New Jersey’s Matchmaker, LLC. You can find out more at www.newjerseysmatchmaker.com.

TOP

RICHARD’S 5 Each issue, our resident auto expert will share some of his secrets of the road. It’s starting to warm up so put the top down and get out there. What better time than now to dish about the finest drives in America?

1

U.S. ROUTE 9W

We have an excellent meandering road that starts right here in Bergen County. Although it runs up to Albany, there are plenty of chances to earn a few smiles along the way. Get out and go kayaking in Piermont, N.Y, or spend the day exploring Bear Mountain State Park.

2

CALIFORNIA STATE ROUTE 1 (Pacific Coast Highway)

If you’re looking for something more adventurous, it’s pretty hard to argue that there’s anything better than top-down motoring on the Pacific Coast Highway. Starting at Dana Point in southern Orange County, the highway runs well past the Golden Gate Bridge. Personally, I think you’ll be more than satisfied with this experience if you start at Interstate 10 in Santa Monica and work your way through Malibu to Zuma Beach.

3

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

Want to see some jaw-dropping vistas and do some hiking along the way? Well, then there’s no question that you should make time to explore the east coast’s Blue Ridge Parkway. Start in the very hip town of Asheville, N.C. and make your way north. It’s likely that some of the Blue Ridge Parkway will be closed due to harsh conditions in the winter months so just stay clear during that time.

5

4

OCEAN AVENUE

(Newport, Rhode Island)

Whether you decide to rent a three-wheeled scooter or motor on in a lavish Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead, if you’re in Newport there’s no question you’re missing out if you don’t take at least one lap around the island. One of my favorite stretches is the curvaceous Ocean Avenue that makes up the southern portion of the island’s ring road. Be sure to stop in at Gooseberry Beach to get some color.

SKYLINE DRIVE TO RINGWOOD STATE PARK

If you have a serious vehicle that needs its legs stretched out, there’s no question your needs will not be met in Bergen County. When I find myself in this situation, I typically head up Route 208 to Ringwood’s Skyline Drive and make my way around the Wanaque Reservoir. From there, I make my way past the historic Ringwood Manor towards New York’s Route 17. Bring a special someone along for the ride and make a stop at the New Jersey Botanical Garden.

WHY WE LOVE IT

HEARTBURN WRITTEN BY

BRANDON GOLDSTEIN

L

et’s get one thing straight here: Nobody loves heartburn. Yet, just like we enjoy that soreness after a great workout, heartburn is the price we pay for eating the foods we love the most. Think about it…

Hot Dogs

Chili

Sriracha Sauce

Burritos

There’s nothing better than enjoying a hot dog smothered with sauerkraut and mustard at the ballpark on a sunny day. Taking only six bites to finish—10 if you get a foot-long—few things pack the same delicious punch in such a quick consumable package like this mystery meat wrapped in a white bread bun. They are so easy to eat that you might need to order two. Hell, order three! You’ll be 100% satisfied for that first hour after you eat them and then you’ll start to feel like your insides are about to explode through your chest.

This is less about the entrée and more about the condiment. I’m pretty sure Sriracha was first conceived as a way of getting back at an ex-boyfriend. “Sure, come over. I’ll make you dinner and we can talk about getting back together!” I’m assuming her name was Siri, and her real intention was to create some sort of organ explosion inside her ex-lover. It worked, except she overlooked two things: She was a really great cook, and Sriracha tastes delicious.

66

SPRING 2015

Oh yes, we’ve had our fair share of chili this past winter. It’s the comfort food that warms our bellies when it’s freezing outside. Maybe you throw meat in the pot or maybe you go the veggie route. Either way, you toss some beautiful cheddar cheese on it and watch it melt ever so majestically before you start shoveling it into your mouth. The beans, onions and peppers all combine to set off fireworks in your mouth…but then comes the fire in your belly.

Let’s take everyone’s favorite foods and wrap them up in a tortilla. It sounds like a great idea and it’s really delicious. It’s funny how few foods are more American than pizza and burritos, and neither is American. Forget that. I feel really patriotic as I bite into my beautiful Mexican cheeseburger. C’mon, that’s totally what it is! It’s rare that you’ll get all of the bountiful assets in one bite, but that’s an argument for another day. We can all agree on one thing: It’s going to taste amazing, and no more than 20 minutes after that first bite, you’ll feel the warm air beneath you, and it’s not because you’re flying.
