Talk of the Town is published by
www.BCTHEMAG.com
Gentlemen, This issue marks four years producing Talk of the Town. It has been a journey, both for the world of publishing, and for us. Many of you know my parents, Sharon and Steven, publishers of BC the Mag and its two subtitles, and Talk of the Town. They’ve worked tirelessly to live out their dream of giving Bergen County a voice and sharing stories of everyone from business magnates to your neighbor. My parents have been surrounded by competition since they first got started, but they never wavered. When I graduated from college, the opportunity to start Talk of the Town pretty much fell into my lap. It was simultaneously exciting and terrifying. I quickly enlisted Justin Davidson, one of my best friends and one of the best wordsmiths I know, to help me along in this overwhelming endeavor. He has been working alongside me ever since, and he has been nailing it. Without a doubt, I’d be lost without his tireless effort and genuine honesty. A man knows who his friends are because they will brutally tell him what he does wrong, and for the past four years, Justin has always kept me in check—exactly what I needed. Justin and I quickly had to learn how all of this worked, but more importantly, we had to figure out what the voice of Talk of the Town would be. Should two boys out of college really be the authority of a “gentlemen’s guide?” Were we even gentlemen? The opportunity to create Talk of the Town taught us a lot about ourselves. Given a blank canvas, we had the chance to create the ideal man, from his style and tastes to his thoughts and opinions. Talk of the Town became a scrapbook of the men we yearned to become. Now, four years later, it’s easy to look back at those clean-shaven, innocent guys and see that the magazine has transformed us. In our third issue, we interviewed famed Chef David Burke, who, aside from throwing every possible food in our faces, imparted wild amounts of wisdom upon us without even realizing it. Here was a guy who built his dream and was now living it. He was sincere, wholly impassioned and took pride in every aspect of his culinary empire from the source of the ingredients to the source of the wood beams that supported his restaurants. David taught us that the details matter. If one piece is off, the rest suffers. A restaurant with great food is lambasted and forgotten if the service is lacking. Even the most miniscule details impact the quality of the finished product. Take a pie, and remove just one half-inch of crust along the edge. It could be a delicious pie, but what does everyone notice? So that became our mission. Take some paper, carefully craft each and every article, design it to perfection, and put it all together. If it is not a carefully orchestrated thing of beauty, then we have failed you—and ourselves. Four years later, and we have heard from you, the readers. We’ve learned what you crave and what you enjoy. In a world where it’s a challenge for magazines to survive, we thank you every single day for allowing us to keep challenging ourselves to become better men. We have published hundreds of stories since Talk of the Town started. We’ve interviewed guys like Jimmy Vivino, the bandleader of Conan O’Brien’s house band on TBS. We’ve spoken with local butchers who had no desire to be in the spotlight. No matter who we were talking to, the story was always similar: These people were chasing their own happiness and none was ever truly content. None felt like this was the end game. They were still hungry, and so are we.

To Our Fathers
We look up to them and follow in their footsteps. Sometimes we even take their names. They are our fathers, and we couldn’t be more honored to be their sons.
W
hen I was young, my father worked far out on Long Island, publishing newspapers. For the most part, that meant he was long gone before I woke up and getting home right as I was going to bed, or later. He sat in traffic for two to three hours each and every day, and I oddly never questioned it or showed my father any sympathy regardless of how much it must’ve sucked. I sit in traffic for half an hour every now and then and it sucks. So weekends were my time with my father, only weekends were also errand time for my father. I found myself following him to the bank, to CVS and to the hardware store. He was doing the tasks he probably hated, and I loved being with him every minute of it. These were my first true experiences of what a man should be. He worked to support his family, and then when he was home, he spent the majority of that time still caring for us in some way. Unfortunately for him, my grandparents all lived out on Long Island, so he would make a similar commute for many weekends, sitting in that same frustrating traffic. Now that I look back on it, I wonder if he ever really had time to enjoy himself. Yet, to this day, I never heard him complain about it. To him, it was just doing what he had to do. There was no other option. The day he started a family was the day he became unquestionably committed to it. Whether at the family’s best times or worst, his devotion never wavered. He is a gentleman in its purest form. When I was young and naïve, he was perfect and unflappable. I now know that no man is, but a man’s character must be defined by how he goes about his days recognizing his flaws, and the manner in which he handles them. Will I ever agree with every decision he makes? No, but I’ll always respect it. People can try to teach you about the kind of person you should be. But preaching it and displaying it is oftentimes where things get tricky. The teachers I once looked up to I now know were still just kids themselves. It was in my home where I was truly sculpted by incredible people like my mother and my father. It would be a Saturday, and I’d be happy as a pig in shit while I tagged along for those errands. As ecstatic as I was to be with my father, I always remembered how excited other people got when they spotted him. I would like to think it was his dashing good looks (which he passed on to me, of course) but I really recognize that it was his big, kind heart. As the world spins, we learn and age. The cycle continues, on and on. The legacy we leave behind is a reflection of the life we choose to live, and how we affect the people we choose to surround ourselves with. I don’t know that I’ll ever be rich, and I’m not sure I’ll ever be famous. What I do know is that I can be a decent man, a good son, and one day, a great husband and father. As my father has shown me, that’s all you really need.

B
efore I start telling you the story behind my favorite picture of me and my dad, I need to first say that I probably don’t have all the facts straight. If you want to know how it really went down, you’ll need to call him. Nobody remembers facts quite like my dad. Over the years, my dad has taken me to countless baseball games, but none of them has had as much historical and personal significance as the one he pulled me out of school early to go see back on September 5, 1995. It was on this date that Cal Ripken, Jr. tied Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive games played. This was game #2,130 in a row for Cal, and it was my very first regular season baseball game. We met several of his friends in Baltimore after he navigated us through the back roads so we would avoid traffic on the Beltway. (My dad also has a very keen sense of direction.) I believe one of his friends took our picture. In the photo, he’s wearing a beautiful tan suit and one of his hundreds of ties. I’ll never cease to be amazed by his tie collection. His beard is perfectly trimmed. His commemorative hat indicated that he was here to see a ballgame, and that he had club level seats at sparkling Camden Yards. The club level there is absolutely magnificent and my dad was certainly dressed for the occasion. I looked like I belonged in a dentist’s chair in Cleveland. You would think I would have wanted to wear an Orioles hat. Clearly I didn’t comprehend the historical significance of this game at the time. The Cleveland Indians were the best team in baseball back in 1995. I don’t remember what my dad said to me when I asked for an Indians hat as we were walking to the stadium, but he bought one for me anyway. I then promptly creased the bill so it looked like an upside-down V. The Orioles weren’t even playing the Indians that night; the California Angels were in town. Kids do silly things, and I was sure acting silly on that school night. When I acted like this, my dad would always say, “You must be taking your silly pills!” Maybe I was taking them that night. Cal Ripken hit a home run and the night was all about him. Still, my mind was preoccupied with a right fielder named Bobby Bonilla and the prospect of catching a foul ball. I wanted a foul ball more than anything. Maybe I thought Bonilla had a silly sounding name. Again, it must have been the silly pills. At least I started rooting for the home team after that. Last year, right around this time, my dad finally let me take him to a game. It was Father’s Day weekend and we were in Detroit visiting my grandmother. My grandfather owned a scrap metal business in a really rough part of Detroit and he always loved taking my dad to Tiger Stadium to go see guys like Norm Cash and Mickey Lolich. They even went to a World Series game back in 1968. That was the year when the Tigers beat the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals. Finally I would get to see a game in my dad’s hometown. We had a lovely time that day and the Tigers won on a walk-off home run. That night, I was up late editing this very magazine. When my dad went out for coffee the next morning with my mom, he returned with a Tigers hat and told me to wear it in good health.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR The roundup from Baselworld 2015
E
ach and every year, watch enthusiasts flock to Baselworld. These men and women—nearly 150,000 of them in 2015—pack their bags for Basel, Switzerland to hear about all that is new and exciting in the world of timepiece manufacturers. Ironically enough, watchmakers often pride themselves on using crafting techniques that are hundreds of years old. Let’s face it: There are three types of watch wearers in this world. First, there is the collector. This person has more watches than days in the year, but out of all those watches, he (or she) only wears between two or three of them in any given span of time. The rest are put away, vaulted or on display in safes with built-in watch winders. These are the limited-edition pieces. No more than ten or so of these prized and cherished pieces exist in the entire world. The collector always knows the newest watches coming out. They knew what was going to premiere at Baselworld weeks before it happened but they wouldn’t miss this Swiss trade show for the world. Next up is the utilitarian. This person says things along the lines of, “My watch tells time and I don’t care if I got it at a fine watch store or Burger King.” Yeah, we don’t really like talking about the utilitarian. Finally, we have the appreciator. He has just a few watches—10 tops. He wears them all, and is in love with each and every one for their craftsmanship and beauty. The appreciator is well aware that carefully crafted timepieces are under attack; Apple is making a watch now, and what a shame that is. He’s a casual wearer and strolls into local stores to see the newest products, months after they debut. He’ll be a good friend of these shop owners because he revels in the fact that there is so much to learn about what goes into a watch, and he craves the knowledge. He didn’t know what debuted at Baselworld, until right now.

The Glashütte Senator Observer Back in 2012, the Senator Observer 1911 was presented in the days leading up to Baselworld. A limited-edition piece in white gold, the Senator Observer 1911 was a tribute to watchmaker Julius Assmann and explorer Roald Amundsen. Amundsen was wearing a Glashütte watch that was designed by Assmann when him and his team became the first people to step foot on the South Pole in 1911. The 2015 model continues to pay homage to those days of bewildering exploration. The sophisticated, stainless steel encased observation watch from Saxon, Switzerland has made extensive use of luminous surfaces to make the new Senator Observer easy to read in the absence of light. The elegant white gold hour and minute hands, bold Arabic numerals and chapter ring hour indexes are all highlighted with green Super-LumiNova, a phosphorescent pigment that absorbs light by day and emits it at night. By day, the matte black dial offers a beautifully different backdrop and contrast to the Arabic numerals in a style that dates back to Glashütte’s days of crafting precision pocket watches at the turn of the 20th century. At the heart of the Senator Observer is the automatic Calibre 100-14, a self-winding movement with a 55-hour power reserve. The finishing of the automatic Calibre is visible through the sapphire case back, making it always possible to witness the work of a true watchmaking master.
Blancpain Ocean Commitment Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback Limited to 250 pieces, Blancpain’s new Ocean Commitment is once again a bold testament to the company’s desire to support oceanic environmental causes. As part of the Ocean Commitment Circle, Blancpain donates partial revenues from the sale of each timepiece to oceanic initiatives. As the person purchasing this watch, you also become a member of the Circle, which grants you special advantages such as closer relationships with other Blancpain partners and exclusive invitations to private events. Beyond its philanthropic initiative, the Ocean Commitment is a smaller diameter diving watch adapted for daily wear. Of course, while saving oceans you can also swim in them. This underwater movement, newly designed in-house by Blancpain, is functional up to a depth of 300 meters. Furthermore, the flyback function greatly simplifies the operation of timing multiple events, perfect for a diver’s decompression stops. Whether you are an avid diver or averse to the sea, the Ocean Commitment will shine on your wrist and help to save the oceans while you’re at it.

Bell & Ross BR-X1 Carbon Forgé Limited to just 250 pieces, the newest BR-X1 still maintains the signature square shape from Bell & Ross—a style taken straight from the cockpits of the world’s fastest jetfighters. Just like the innovations of the world’s aircraft, Bell & Ross has equipped its hypersonic chronograph with lightweight and ultra-resistant forged carbon to create the ultimate high-end utility watch. A tribute to the Bell X-1, the first American experimental plane with a rocket engine to break the sound barrier in 1947, the BR-X1 mixes a high-quality chronograph with a sporty design, and now, a badass carbon fiber body that adds strength while remaining decidedly lightweight. In fact, the BR-X1 has a density of 1.5, compared to eight for similarly sized steel watches. It’s light, so you can be fast.
Bell & Ross BR 03 Rafale This piece is another great example of the blending of the watchmaking and military worlds. The BR 03 Rafale celebrates the world’s most successful multi-role fighter aircraft: The Rafale. Debuting in 2004, this agile delta wing has become a mainstay of air forces throughout the world. In the company’s search for the ideal practical watch, Bell & Ross looked no further than the cockpit clocks of such esteemed aircraft as the Rafale, whose instruments must be able to perform at extreme speeds and precise, gravity-defying movements. The sleek, stealthy, matte black ceramic Rafale houses a mechanical chronograph movement with automatic winding, and it is as practical as it is cool. The auxiliary counter of the small seconds displays the distinctive silhouette of the actual Rafale aircraft if you didn’t already feel like your watch was “military chic” enough.
Zenith Elite 6150 Back in 1994, Zenith introduced its award-winning Elite movement. Fast forward two decades to Baselworld 2015 and Zenith has introduced its newest reworking of the Elite movement, a base movement that Zenith enthusiasts will most likely enjoy in many timepieces to come. If you’re looking for beauty in simplicity, look no further than the Elite 6150. Enclosed in a super thin stainless steel case, this silver-toned beauty has a power reserve of 100 hours with a transparent sapphire crystal back casing that allows you to peer into the striking new movement. A black alligator strap complements the gleaming stainless steel perfectly, adding to a classic look that keeps your Zenith timeless. Continued on pg. 20

Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Speciale There is seriously no point in driving your Ferrari around the streets of North Jersey this summer if you do not have the wrist-wear to match. In 2012, with hopes that you actually felt this way, Hublot unveiled the first of its timepieces in collaboration with Ferrari. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Big Bang, Hublot has once again created a timepiece to honor Ferrari’s exceptional racing pedigree. Two watches, the Big Bang Ferrari Black Ceramic (shown here) and the Grey Ceramic, inspired by the historic NART (North American Racing Team) have been released. The sporty design of this year’s Big Bang Ferrari model is enhanced by a profiled aerodynamic dial through which the depths of the movement can be glimpsed. The UNICO manufacture movement is dominated by the distinct Ferrari grille—a blackened crisscross mesh. Each numbering 250 pieces, both watches have a 72-hour power reserve. Naturally, the dial features an appliqué of the iconic Ferrari prancing horse, while the date counter appears in Ferrari’s bold yellow shield color. You’re a Ferrari man. You’re sophisticated and you appreciate meticulous craftsmanship and engineering. You need the watch that displays this.
Hublot Big Bang Unico Italia Independent In late 2014, Hublot announced a partnership with Italia Independent. A mere five months later, and the fruits of the partnership with the Italian brand were already on display at Baselworld 2015. The collaboration between the prestigious watchmaking brand and Italia Independent has produced a brand new material called Texalium, exclusive to Hublot. Now that it’s fully accustomed to carbon fiber cases, Hublot wanted to go even further, creating the ability to have multicolored carbon fiber. Texalium is just that. Its aluminum-coated carbon fiber can be designed in different colors with remarkable brilliance, while still maintaining the low weight associated with carbon fiber. Hublot will manufacture 500 of both the blue and grey Italia Independent pieces, and all will feature UNICO, Hublot’s manufacture chronograph movement. Each watch comes with a matching pair of Italia Independent sunglasses that are also made with the wondrous Texalium. For more information on any of these fine watches, visit The Timepiece Collection at 58. E. Palisade Avenue in Englewood.

RICHARD’S 5 Buckle up. It’s going to be a hell of a ride.
W
ith summer upon us, there are two things to keep in mind. First, it’s time to double up on the exercise routine and get ready to soak up the sun like a Greek god. Second, it’s also time to settle into your seat and get ready for some blockbuster action movies. In light of our anticipation for a bevy of explosions, car chases, gratuitous violence and, yes, more explosions, I’ve cultivated a list of the top five movie cars from over the years. While some were made icons due to their star-studded debut, there are a couple vehicles on my list that were bigger than the box office all along. They were outstanding autos before they appeared in the limelight. Let’s take it from the top…
5
DELOREAN DMC-12 FROM “BACK TO THE FUTURE”
You know, the more I think about it, the more difficult it becomes for me to figure this one out. I’m not sure if the DeLorean made “Back to the Future” cool or if the flick made the DeLorean cool. Either way, any time I see the brushed aluminum exterior of the DMC-12, I can’t help but think of time traveling with Doc to stop Biff from being...Biff. I cannot think of an automobile better suited for the job. For its time, the DeLorean’s design was way ahead of what everyone else was putting out. This is probably what most people thought every car would look like by the year 2000. Sad to say, that’s just not the case. Continued on pg. 32

BMW Z8
FROM “THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH”
FROM “FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS” I have to admit that Johnny Depp’s jaw-dropping performance portraying the character of Raoul Duke—who is a dead ringer for the real-life Hunter S. Thompson—is what really made this 1998 movie adaptation special. While many people will point to the “white whale” Cadillac Eldorado as the star of the movie, I will suggest otherwise. When Duke is summoned to make the trip, he is advised that he needs a fast car with no top to streak across the desert. After that, you see the lipstick-red land-yacht filled with Acapulco shirts and a slew of illegal substances. You just know there wasn’t a better suited vehicle for the job. If it wasn’t for this classic Chevy, I am just not sure if the hallucinogenic opening scene with bats swooping in on the main characters would have been the same. (“We can’t stop here, this is bat country!”) Fun fact: One of the Impalas used during production for the “red shark” scenes is one of Thompson’s personal vehicles.
2
FORD SHELBY GT500 MUSTANG “ELEANOR”
Although you may not know it, the Z8 is essentially a reboot of a classic BMW roadster named the 507. If you look at both side-by-side, it’s crystal clear the Z8 is the modern interpretation of the very rare 1950s Bavarian droptop. Designed by Henrik Fisker, the Z8 is arguably one of the prettiest automotive designs of the 2000s. It’s like rolling art. While BMWs tend to have a bit of a brutish look, this is an especially elegant car befitting the world’s most charismatic spy. Though James Bond may usually drive astonishing Aston Martins, there’s no question that Q did 007 a solid this time around.

THE MUTT CUTTS VAN FROM “DUMB & DUMBER”
FROM “GONE IN 60 SECONDS”
I’m talking about the car from the remake that came out in 2000. While many would sit here and discuss if the loose remake was nearly as good as the original that came out back in 1974, I’d rather not waste time. Let’s cut to the chase: They both were good in their own way. There’s not one, but two reasons as to why Eleanor is cool. Primarily, it’s because the car is given one hell of a build up leading to its unveiling as it is the last car to be stolen. In addition, this heavily redone “GT500” is one serious retromod. Although about a dozen cars were made for the film’s production, most of the cars were shells. Because of this, it spurred a cottage industry of aftermarket companies more than happy to create your very own Eleanor, albeit for a price.

SUMMER 2015
In terms of 1990s comedies, I think it’s pretty hard to argue that “Dumb & Dumber” isn’t up there with the best of them. Essentially, with the casting of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as the two main characters, it was a picture that helped push Carrey further into Hollywood A-list status. While there are a handful of memorable scenes featuring leisure suit tuxedos and even a dead bird, it’s pretty tough to top the first time a viewer sees the Mutt Cutts van. Now I am not sure if this was done in irony, but the van’s dog look bears some resemblance to Daniels’ character, Harry Dunne. Note his floppy, sloppy hair.
Summer Fashion Not every day is a suit day. Don’t worry. Our esteemed stylist Candace Kristin will have you looking your best even when it’s in the triple digits
Bathing Suits This summer, before you head to the beach, pool or lake, pick up a vibrant pair of trunks. More and more companies are designing suits with unique patterns and bright colors. Grab one with an Aztec design, this season’s hottest print. Or maybe you’ll look great in camouflage or a bold hue such as a vivid orange. The fit is key here. Your suit should land a few inches above the knee and the silhouette should follow the lines of your body while still being loose enough to be comfortable. Leave the below-the-knee board shorts to the teenagers. Camo and orange suits by Hartford. Aztec suit by Le Club
T-Shirts Mix a few novelty prints in with your classic solid T-shirt collection to amp up your fashion statement. There are many to choose from, like classic movies, retro concerts and offbeat phrases. These quirky shirts aren’t just for the college dude; they’re perfect for your weekend clothing lineup as well. Pair your shirt with distressed denim and a hip pair of sneakers to keep your look modern and age appropriate. For a trendier approach, match it with a tailored black blazer. Hats Baseball hats are having a major moment and can be seen everywhere from the runway to the streets. Not just for donning while playing “the game,” men can pair this accessory with anything from chic blazers to even suits. It’s “grad” season. Half-Zips This mock-neck half-zip sweatshirt is perfect for those chilly summer nights hanging by the fire. The lightweight cotton fabric and casual feel makes it fantastic for layering and a must-have weekend staple. True Grit
Shorts Shorts have been making a slow transformation for the past several seasons. Now more than ever, designers have been focusing on this key warm weather piece of legwear. They have incorporated bright colors such as red, yellow and indigo blue, this season’s hottest color. Unconventional warm pastel colors have also made a splash on the runway and it is one of summer’s biggest trends. Add some panache to your shorts with an interesting belt. Select a printed woven fabric with a fun motif, a striped grosgrain or a simple leather one with a nautical-themed buckle, like an anchor. Purple shorts/belt and plaid shorts/belt by Hartford. Sunglasses Get out of the shade and into the rays with these sun spectacles. This season, go with a pair of modified aviators with an oversized silver frame and dark lenses, or pick up a pair of very trend-forward modern acetate colored frames with a retro feel. Not only do sunglasses serve a very practical purpose, they also can really pull together your summer look. Experiment with a new frame shape or lens color. The options are endless. You are guaranteed to feel instantly “on-point” in a fresh new pair. Oliver Peoples
Cotton Polo Shirts Perfect for causal summer Fridays or for hitting the links. This clean-cut cotton polo is a great substitute for the typical piqué fabric version. The pocket detail adds an interesting twist and is great for holding the scorecard. There is no shortage of colors to select from as designers create this classic piece in an array of hues. Choose one in a rich color such as green or amethyst, or pair a simple white with a crisp navy blazer during the workday. How it fits is also important. A trimmer silhouette will look more stylish while an oversized shirt looks sloppy. Hartford Alternative Classics Collection
Laces Bring your sneakers, oxfords and lace-up boat shoes to a new level by adding a bit of pizazz and substituting the simple brown laces for colored ones. Doing this is not for the leery. It’s for the gents who want to make a bold statement. Stolen Riches

Missouri Meerschaum Company Corn Cob Pipes These American legends have been crafted in the good ole US of A since way back in 1869. We don’t usually include much trash in here, but this one we just couldn’t pass up. So you, your wife, your kids and your dog all make messes. We do our best to sweep them up, but at the end of the day, sweeping something into a duster always leaves dust behind, and much more cleaning left to do. Bruno makes up for that. Your worst nightmares are alleviated. Suck it up and go to brunosmartcan.com.

Carefully carved and heat-formed by skilled craftsmen, Bixby combs are the perfect accessory for the style-conscious man. I’m confident Danny Zuko and the T-Birds would be rockin’ their Bixby all day long. Comb through the different choices at bixbybrand.com.

Alfred Lane Solid Cologne For the most part, do we have any idea where our cologne comes from or what it even is? My guess is no, and so would the founders of Alfred Lane, who together created a line of solid colognes made proudly in Chicago with ingredients sourced from the great states of our union. The perfect pairings from a Memorial Day for the ages
A
s far back as I can remember, my summers consisted of trips up and down the good old Garden State Parkway to beautiful Mantoloking. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, there was nothing to enjoy but private beaches, cigars, champagne and the finest cocktails. But, to my dismay, in 2012 a rather mammoth female named Sandy annihilated my heart, leaving behind nothing but rubble. Our family lost over 30 years of memories in just one day of monumental waves. Two-and-a-half years and a few band-aids later, my 86-year-old grandfather can finally go home to his new house in the Mantoloking sand. So, for the past few weeks, Steph and I had been planning a Memorial Day bash of sorts. For most Americans, a barbecue means coolers of beer—but we don’t believe in carbs like that. Our bar spread consisted of the usual: Corralejo tequila, Dom Perignon and a few bottles of chilled Sancerre. We made grilled clams, steak and shrimp kabobs, stone

Summer Swerving Sangria Ingredients:
1 sliced orange 2 sliced lemons 2 sliced limes 12 mint leaves (large) ½ cup silver tequila ½ cup fresh lime juice 1 bottle white wine Club soda
Directions:
Muddle fruit, chill, & top off with club soda
crab claws, octopus and lobsters flamed right on the grill that were drizzled with garlic and olive oil. It wasn’t your typical hot dog and hamburger affair, but what the heck, we had to christen the house! Steph chose a wonderful Sancerre: a 2012 Domaine Vacheron. Sancerres are crisp, intensely aromatic high-acid white wines. They work very well with grilled flavors. The Domaine Vacheron was refreshing on the palate; its clean lemon flavors encouraged the copious amount of seafood we served. This is a classic style Sancerre with a long, intense mineral finish. It tastes like the shell of a fresh oyster or as if you’ve walked up to the foot of Abe Lincoln’s memorial and took a bite out of his toe. The Domaine Vacheron comes from the Central Vineyards in France’s Loire Valley, which is a region that is specifically known for being rich with silex. Evidently, this is the reason for the bottle’s intense mineral flavor. Besides the obvious taste and body of a Sancerre, I respectfully chose this wine because it is made from hand-harvested, biodynamically tended grapes. In layman’s terms, it’s certified organic and we’re all about ingesting the good stuff. Just like us, our guests are what I like to call “alcohol enthusiasts,” so I made one of my favorite summer sangrias for them. I’m not sure if it was the abundance of tequila, or just our undying love for this bottle full of questionable decision making, but my summer sangria spiked with some Corralejo is naughty. (Look to your left for the full recipe.) So, after eating like cafones and drinking alcohol like bears waking up from hibernation, it was time to bust out the cigars. Smoke if ya got ’em. We brought a few boxes of La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Chiselito Maduros from The Brick House Cigar Shop for our guests to enjoy. The La Flor Dominicana brand, known for its powerhouse Double Ligero blends and unique chisel-shaped smokes, has been a favorite amongst cigar enthusiasts since its establishment over a decade ago. Through the combination of hard work, uncompromising quality and arguably the most innovative mind in the cigar business, producer Litto Gomez Diez makes sticks that appeal to even the most demanding smokers—those who look for more in a cigar than a pleasant 45 minute diversion. La Flor Dominicana tobacco is not for the faint of heart, or should I say, lungs. The Ligero tobaccos create a full flavor experience that not every smoker can appreciate. While we were smoking, I turned to the crowd and said, “Imagine it’s April Fool’s Day and your kid brother replaces the mouthwash
with battery acid and tart cherries.” With a chuckle and an eye roll, Steph shook her head and filled my glass with tequila. I can always instantly pick out the scent of a Chiselito if someone is smoking one near me. This is a result of the intense flavor profile created by the Double Ligero tobacco. The Ligero leaves are the highest leaves on the tobacco plant, allowing them to get the most sun and the majority of the nutrients—just like me when I’m sitting outside The Brick House Cigar Shop on a wonderful Tuesday afternoon. The Double Ligero Maduro really increases the palate’s ability to pick up notes. La Flor Dominicana did a great job blending this stick because the strength of the Double Ligero doesn’t outweigh the flavors of the Maduro leaf. The natural wrapper may seem a bit one-dimensional for most smokers, but we both highly suggest eating a massive steak (seafood combo) before smoking any of these Double Ligero masterpieces (#Winning). Other tasting notes included: wet walnuts drizzled with melted Warhead candies (the black packaging) and a boiling Coastal Cooler Capri Sun. Throw in a cup of earl grey tea mixed with a few lit cedar sticks and some nutmeg and you have the La Flor Dominicana Chiselito. As the sun set over the beautiful Mantoloking beach, I puffed my chest, then my cigar, and extended my glass to Steph and my guests for a toast. I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the summer and christen my grandfather’s beach house. This might have been the best day of my life. Mike Duch is the owner of The Brick House Cigar Shop and Stephanie Inzalaco is a graduate of Kevin Zraly’s Windows on the World Wine School. Together, Duch and Inzalaco started corksandmatches. com, a website devoted to fine wines and great smokes.

CONEY ISLAND and BEER Coney Island Brewing Company is quickly becoming part of the fun and funky traditions associated with “The Playground of the World” WRITTEN BY
TARA DELORENZO
A
fter starting out as a labor of love, according to Mike Sheehan, Coney Island Brewing Company’s “ringleader,” the company has now expanded to offer its refreshing brews in Sussex, Passaic, Morris and Bergen Counties. Jeremy Cowan of Shmaltz Brewing Company founded Coney Island

Brewing Company back in 2007. After a conversation with Alan Newman, who was interested in purchasing a He’brew Beer T-shirt from Cowan in 2013, Alchemy & Science, a craft beer venture led by Newman and Stacey Steinmetz, took control of the Coney Island brand, and Cowan shifted his focus back to He’Brew. Coney Island Brewing Company
aims to capture the essence of New York City and Coney Island. Cowan began a strong tradition of brewing award-winning lagers with innovative labels and packaging that features the iconic symbols and imagery associated with aspects of Coney Island. “The inspiration of the Coney Island Brewing Company is the spirit of Coney Island itself,” Sheehan said.
Fresh Fish. Flown in Daily.
“It really is ‘The Playground of the World’ and we embrace the entire spectrum. We feel like our brand really encompasses all that is Coney Island; it’s the boardwalk, beach, baseball, hot dogs and freak show all rolled into one.” According to Sheehan, the decision to bring the brand to New Jersey was inspired by a recent “boom” in the northern New Jersey craft scene, and also because of the company’s success in New York City. Currently, the beers available in Bergen County include the Mermaid Pilsner draft, the Overpass IPA draft, the Mermaid Pilsner six-pack, the Overpass IPA six-pack and the 1609 Amber Ale six-pack. “Each beer has its own story,” Sheehan said. “Our three offerings in New Jersey have a true NYC story behind them. Mermaid Pilsner takes its cue from the nation’s largest art parade, the Mermaid Parade. Overpass IPA celebrates the artistic culture of the DUMBO art district in Brooklyn, and 1609 Amber Ale is a nod to the year the Dutch explorers first set foot on what is now NYC.” With all its expansion and exciting changes in the company, Coney Island Brewing Company emphasizes the importance of staying true to its product and offering the best beer possible to any customer looking for a true city taste. “Coney Island continues to brew world-class favorites, while also celebrating the local community more and exposing more people to the singular thrills that are so unique to the brand and the landmarked locale,” Sheehan said. “There’s never been a better time in history to be a beer fan. We’re incredibly excited to be available in Bergen County now and join the other great local brews already available. Ask your local bartender or store owner for a six-pack of Coney Island and you won’t be disappointed.” For an even better and more authentic experience with the brand, Sheehan recommends taking a trip into the city. “Come visit Coney Island,” Sheehan said. “There are tons of great rides, attractions and things to do and see in Coney Island this summer. It’s quickly becoming a center for live art and an entrepreneurial spirit. Don’t miss out on the fun, and grab a pint while you’re here.” And whether you’re in Coney Island or in the friendly confines of your own backyard, Sheehan suggests trying one of the more traditional flavors first. “I’m always a sucker for the classics, so Mermaid Pilsner is my favorite,” he said. “As a ‘New York pilsner,’ I think it’s a perfect blend of an old-world style blended with classic American hops and rye.”

Boat Shoes WRITTEN BY

I
can say with the utmost certainty that I’ve worn boat shoes while actually on a boat only a handful of times. I can also say with the same degree of certainty that I looked damn good (and appropriately dressed) on that boat. Boat shoes are a mystery to me. It seems that men have been slipping them on for as long as I can remember. If my history is accurate, the origin of the boat shoe dates back to Norse mythology and the era of the Vikings. The Vikings frequently adorned their shoes with fur, even in the summer, because that’s just kind of how they rolled. But let’s be honest with ourselves for a quick minute: Boat shoes really only look cool for one day, and that’s right when you take them out of the box, and before you’ve walked a single step in them. After just one wear, they’re scratched, scuffed and dirty. There’s also about a 99.9% chance they smell as if your cat used them as a litter box for several days. Oh, but boat shoes are practical right? NO! I didn’t feel any additional support those few times I was rocking my boat shoes on a boat. If you told me they prevented seasickness, I’d be all in. Boat shoes don’t even help you get to the side of the boat any faster because they’ll slip right off your foot!

SUMMER 2015
Boat shoes are great for short trips. I mean short as in going to the beach where you’ll take them off, or if you’re running a few quick errands around town. That’s it. Walk far in them and you’ll feel it in your back the next day. Try running? Ha! Please don’t try that at home (or anywhere else). Once those laces come untied you might as well throw them right in the trash because you’re never getting those laces tied well again. And then there’s the smell. Oh man, how absolutely dreadful. It took years upon years of us living with having stinky feet for hours even after we took them off before someone came up with those ridiculous socks you can now wear with them. Now you can be ridiculed for your stinky feet or your absurd socks. It’s really a lose-lose. Are they stylish? Some might say so, but most would outwardly and vehemently disagree. But this column isn’t called “Why We Hate It.” We don’t hate boat shoes at all. They have been a staple in our wardrobes and simple men with easily defined tastes have flocked to them forever. Our fathers wore them, and now we do too. We wear them, we blister our feet, we hurt our backs, and at the end of it all, after a long day, we take them off and our feet smell like Fritos. Boat shoes are stubborn, impractical and rough around the edges. So are we, and that’s why we love them.
