T
his appetizer before the entertainment main course called Saint Lucia Carnival was introduced to the world
events menu in 1996!! Certainly a sky rocketing way to start the Carnival season as the Jazz season mellowed into sweet memories, Lucian Line Jam is always the best way to kick off the Carnival season & this year's event which took place on Monday May 20th, 2013 was a Soca Music bonanza! A project of the Cultural Development Foundation & Mas Action Carnival Band, Line Jam 2k13 could not be stopped by the initial down pour of liquid sunshine. Patrons throughout the island & abroad reveled in the Mas Fever. The Spirit of Saint Lucia, Bounty Rum certainly had to be a leading fortress of support for this cultural event. The National Rum of Saint Lucia which was founded under Denros Bounty Rum in 1972 after the old Dennery Distillery and the Roseau Bay Distillery merged to bring forth a team which has helped to fuel the growth of locals for many generations by providing jobs island-wide and sponsoring many incredible causes for decades! The Bounty Hunter, one of the many cocktails which can be created from the locally distilled rum is comparable to the fever felt & feisty dance moves which took place on the road. Many local musicians got the opportunity to perform their songs & many prizes were won by the participants of the road dance march. Bounty is used as medicine by senior folk in Saint Lucia to relieve tummy aches & flu symptoms. Some mix a shot of Bounty with honey and exclaim as they receive almost instant throat relief. That's one of the beauties of living in the Caribbean! Creativity in all fields is established! The Ingenious Captain Jack Sparrow would certainly exchange a few notes with them! The casual yet sophisticated Bounty Rum shouldered the spirit of Saint Lucia’s carnival season! Truly a bountiful movement of music, dance, arts & culture which is upheld by Saint Lucian people & harnesses the creative energies of our Caribbean brethren. Hey, hey, ho & a bottle of rum! Thanks for drinking responsibly and have a great Caribbean summer season!

days of “Oo-la-la”, “Oh my
gosh”, “I’m loving this” & “I can’t wait for tomorrow!” No, it wasn’t a honeymoon or romantic getaway. Well, it was for many who wanted that unique & divine tropical vacation in the most beautiful Caribbean island and The World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination as voted by the World Travel Awards: Sweet Saint Lucia, the Helen of the West Indies! But enough of my patriotic babbling! Let’s dive into the 2013 Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival. This year’s re-branding of the Saint Lucian cultural event (which ranks as royalty in Caribbean events), was a success. Success with regards to the dramatic exposure which talented locals obtained. Success meaning that dreams were birthed & eternal memories and bonds were cultivated with nutritious foundations. Saint Lucian artists are proud to be local with international standards! International Saint Lucian models Mala Bryan & Porsha Chery, who participated in the elite & controversial Hot Couture Jazz Fashion Show creatively directed by Fashion icon Vincent Mcdoom who resides in Paris, tagged up with other local models including Miss Saint Lucia Universe 2012 Tara Edward & designers (local & foreign), to raise the bar for the creative industry to an international level and more. All in all the actual show held at the AUDI Building was rated a platinum performance in our books. Great music performed island-wide by awesome local, regional & international musicians, delicious food which could make someone’s mouth water like water from a raging river, sweet eye candy, a historical Saint Lucian cultural experience & artistic eutopia! Does this sum up all that’s Saint Lucian Jazz & Arts? I was told that many people were in “stand by” at many international airports prior to the start of the events which began from April 30th & ended on May 12th. Do you know where they were heading? That’s right!! Sweet 758! See you in Saint Lucia for our 2014 Jazz & Arts Festival!

MELLISA GIDDINGS “WHAT IS IT THAT I WANT TO SAY? WHAT IS IT THAT I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW, TO BE AWARE OF? I SEE A PICTURE FIRST!” The 2nd of 8 children, Mellisa currently holds a Bachelor Arts Honors Degree in Theatre Arts & a Minor in Cultural Studies from The University of the West Indies, at Mona, Jamaica. Stacy, as many of her loved ones refer to her, has a passion for theatrical arts which is as rich as Persian gold & her theatrical portrayals are always as refreshing as coconut water! Mellisa directed her first drama piece as a student at the Carmen Rene Memorial School during a Jounen Kwéyòl exhibition & continued polishing her talents when she became a student at the St. Joseph's Convent Secondary School. Barbara Duboulay, Cultural Coordinator at the Cultural Development Foundation, introduced her to Carnival Queen Show Talent Co-ordination over 5 years ago. This steered her into Pageantry Talent Co-ordination & she has guided many young ladies such as the reigning Queen Amy Stephens as well as Hannah Forde, Louise Victor & Shatal Lionel to success via her winning & aspiring portrayals. Every summer Stacy co-ordinates summer workshops for children with Barbara! She writes talent pieces which help her articulate her perspectives on situations in society. Her portrayals vary from Acceptance, Individuality and even HomoSexuality. She does her utmost best to portray situations which are not greatly highlighted, thus causing her to revolutionize the local theatre scenes via her actors’ dramatizations.
Pageantry Talent Co-ordination “While I want best talent every time, at the end of the day it is really the girl's progress as well. If I am sitting in the crowd and watching this girl knowing
that I took her from point A to point E, you know, then that for me is rewarding!" Contestants are judged via their portrayal of their talent piece on the evening of the event & not by their progress from the inception of their selection for participating in the event. Stacy's sense of style is as unique as her drama presentations Kendel Hippolyte is one of Mellisa’s local cultural icons! "Having achieved so much I still find there's humility. You get a genuine feeling that he wants to help younger artists to be the best that they can be." She merited the talents of Drenia Frederick & Kentillia Louis because they are women who are revolutionizing the field of theatrics. Mellisa would welcome the opportunity to be featured in an international movie. "We need to create
the avenues to take the world to Saint Lucia!' She spoke about investing into our local
talents, similar to Jamaica's creative sector which is so rich that their artists become acknowledged internationally soon after being promoted locally. They have created avenues which branch opportunities towards their people. She hugged the efforts of the Cultural Development Foundation to inspire the local creative artists!
"I think that as young people you have to make things happen. Sometimes I become very frustrated!”

Performing Arts
Stacy is part of the Red Unlimited Foundation & assists in the development of Carnival concepts & feels honored that the quality of her work is trusted by this reputable company. She is in demand as a Creative Director for Carnival Queen Show talent co-ordinations. As a soulful teacher, Mellisa has inspired her students at Saint Mary's College, many of whom are now being encouraged by their parents to pursue higher education in Arts colleges. She was initially “disenchanted” after the opportunities for theatrics were few when returning home with her Bachelor's Degree. Many locals denounce such a qualification, but she rebukes such a mentality by saying “Only exceptional, creative persons can manufacture a soulful entertainment piece!.” With a passion as deeply rooted as the enchanted dances & drama pieces as the Caribbean colonial people, I wouldn’t toss away the thought of Mellisa being a future Nobel Laureate & Caribbean Arts Icon!

H
e participated in a Stephen Paul 12 course photography session in order to educate himself about the art. Gideon obtained a great deal on a camera from a friend of his brother who was about to leave the island to attend school in Trinidad and henceforth began honing his skills. One day, after arriving at the beach with a friend, Gideon began taking test shots and became impressed with a few. He eventu ally uploaded some of the photos onto various social media websites and got many positive reviews. Soon after he obtained a tripod and was able to take creative mid-air photos, which is something you won’t find in typical small island photography! Later on, Gideon was able to afford a flash unit and increased the quality of the 500+ photos which he takes pride in capturing at an Untitled 51 video shoot. Despite being seen as a young credible photographer by many, he denounced the title because he did not perceive his skills to be credible enough to name him as a professional photographer. He didn’t want to rush the brush. Over time he created GNAN Photography and was the official Photographer for 758’s Michael Rob inson’s My Love Song music video. With all that said, Gideon has been in the world of photography for almost two years thus far! He has been trained by Benjamin Howell and Stephen Paul and refers his photos to Daniel Marcion for constructive criticism in order to fuel his talent and passion.

Paparazzi 12 FACTS ABOUT ME MY FAMILY
The Helen of the West Indies, Miss Saint Lucia Universe 2012 Representative!
Tara was raised with her mother and her family of 7 who look up to her, thus causing her to be very conscious about how she portrays herself and the events which she participates in.
MY EDUCATION
Tara attended the Ave Maria Infant & Primary School and the Bocage Secondary School. She is now pursuing her 5th Diploma with Associate Business Executives at N.R.D.F and plans to complete her Degree in Business Management with Monroe College.
LATEST HEALTH OBSESSION
Tara seldom eats junk foods. She maintains a positive attitude, follows a balance diet & exercises regularly, especially after entering the world of pageantry. “I have a long way to walk everyday from the main road to my home if I don’t get a ride, so I get alot of exercise and sometimes I go walking with my boyfriend!”
RELATIONSHIP THOUGHTS
“A relationship is something that you should be prepared for and something that you should be able to give yourself out 100%, making sacrifices and involving someone in your lifestyle changes, because it’s not only about yourself. You have to think about the person whom you are involved with. I think communication is very important in a relationship and hopefully they will understand where you are coming from. You should know when to pick your fights!”
FRIENDS
Tara’s friends see her as a headstrong “I’ll-say-it-to-your-face” kind of girl. She believes in giving friends their personal space and spending quality time together.
FAVORITE PART OF MY HOME
She gave a hearty laugh,” My bedroom!” She values her personal space. She gets to relax and play around with her perfumes and cosmetics. She seldom gardens but enjoys growing vegetables because,” They grow fast!”
RESTAURANT I ENJOY
Tara loves the Coal Pot restaurant and Chef Xavier is her favorite local Chef. J.D: “What’s your favorite food?”
FOOD & COCKTAILS
Tara: “Foods you should say!” Tara enjoys seafood and shellfish with lobster being her jewel! Salads and organic arugula are also some of her favorite delights! “I am a sucker for pasta and I am a sucker for barbeque. I like to get my hands dirty. Forget about my nails. I’d get barbeque sauce all over me! I’m a wine girl! I like wine.”Tara enjoys drinking Bentley with Angostura bitters and blended fruit punch & occasionally Whiskey with soda water.

MUSIC
“I am a sucker for Shayne Ross. It’s all about the love and the emotional things!” Tara also loves the music of former Miss Saint Lucia World Aiasha Gustave! She loves the Caribbean R&B twist to her music! Tara loves “Love without tragedy” by Rihanna and the story behind the words and believes that many young people can relate to this song.
BEAUTY
Because she gets numerous positive reviews for her bone structure Tara believes that’s her best physical feature. She takes great care when applying make up to highlight these features and it makes up for so many other things. “Working out is important. It is the least you could do. You owe yourself that.” She loves Naomi Campbell because of her runway talents and fashion prestige which she is notable for internationally! Being respected as one of the best local models, Tara seeks to be an international model on such a level.
COSMETICS
Tara’s favorite brand of make-up is MAC and Black Opal! Black Opal is made for the black woman! MAC has a wide variety of cosmetics and is very professional. They pay very special attention to skin texture, tones and undertones! They cater to her volcanic passion for lipsticks! During her interview with me she wore a combination of MAC and Black Opal which helped her to keep an all natural look!
HANG OUT SPOT
Tara enjoys hanging out at Delirius. She enjoys the balance of people & the techno music. The sophistication is uncanny with regards to dining and music for a fun night, one stop zone!
GADGETS
Apart from her phone, Tara loves her boyfriend’s Samsung Galaxy tablet which they always have disputes for. She says, “It’s our tablet!” She loves the convenience of it!
The Miss Universe Experience!
"Miss Universe is a business. It's not just about pageantry like Miss World, but an actual business. You are going to be a brand ambassador not just for your country but for Donald Trump, one of the most successful men in the world!" The 25 year old icon contacted Joan Johnson of the Miss Universe Committee and signed up for the competition. She prepared to capture the crown by watching videos which showcased previous pageants, used her modeling experience to boost her performance & a positive mindset to help boost her morale. “I was crowned on November 2nd 2012 and had to leave on the 2nd of December. I had so much to do with so little money for this very huge pageant, so that put a little toll on me. I was a little stressed about that. I caught myself being overwhelmed at home and crying whiles praying that everything worked out.” Tara’s supportive family, friends, local government officials, designers & business houses contributed financially towards the cost of her trip to Las Vegas. Many people refused to support her, and some posted negative comments across social mediums whiles she went the extra mile to represent the small & humble nation. “I think we need to be less judgmental and more helpful in our lives and not just help to say that you helped them, but do it from your heart. She received over 17 thousand votes on the Missosology selection and 1st runner up in the voting selection for the pageant. Tara was constantly in the Top 4 on the voting list on Facebook for the Miss Universe Committee’s various popularity contests and certainly added some more foundation to
the divine face of Fair Helen! Tara spoke about receiving negative glances from locals while she walks in the streets and exclaimed,” And it’s amazing how they could act like that, but somebody who doesn’t even know me, I am not even from their country could have so much respect for me and give so many compliments and respect and when I am here people are so cold and there is no national pride in people who represent Saint Lucia.” “Everything that you do in life is just another stepping stone in achieving a bigger dream” She said that contestants need to understand that they won’t always win. She wished that other contestants in pageants would move on from their “losses” onto another event to develop themselves as she has done.

I felt good about myself afterwards.” “I am a true representative!” If she is called to represent Saint Lucia at the Miss World 2013 Pageant she would revert to her strict dietary standards & fitness routines. FAVORITE FOOD
“I love a good steak! I love curry chicken. Roti is one of my favorite things to eat, because to me a good roti is just a work of art man! A good roti has everything in there. To me you bite in there and you’re good!” Shayne claims to be a “connoisseur” of rice & tuna fish, which is his favorite meal. “It’s not glamorous, but it’s real!” He enjoys barbequing and would “cook up a storm” when he isn’t at work!
WINES I LOVE
Shayne’s taste in wine is as exquisite and soothing as his music. He is a lover of Moscato wines & Rosé’s White Zinfandel. He certainly enjoys local! If you offer him a glass of Chairman’s Spice with cranberry juice I doubt he’d turn you down.
BEST PLACE TO BE
“You can be where ever you are in the world but home is where you grow up. Your home has to be the place where you de-stress. I think that your home has to be your daily vacation spot!” Shayne’s favorite Staycation spot is his mother’s home in Mon Repos. He can completely “de-stress” in his childhood home which is the root of his upbringing. Many people can testify to that.
SPIRITUALITY
“I am a Christian first and foremost. I don’t subscribe to any religious back ground. I think everybody is endowed
with that spirit to let them know right from wrong. If you don’t know in your heart what’s right or wrong, you seek out spiritual guidance & not necessarily religion. It’s up to each individual to decide what they would do in respect to their relationship with God.” Shayne believes that we have different levels of comradery with our friends, despite respecting them individually and we ought to honor our personal relationship with God like the relationships we share with our friends.
MUSICALLY SPEAKING
“I think it’s time for us to take over our airways and do so, not forcefully, but by creating such good music that they have no choice to play it because it’s that good!” Shayne believes that we have a massive number of high quality local music which can dominate the local airways. He is proud of the increase in talented Artistes such as Ronald “Boo” Hinkson, Zionomi, Stacy Charles, Michael Robinson, Ace, Kayo, Nelson Serieux, Sherwin “Dupes” Brice and many other local Artistes who produce various genres & are too numerous to mention. He sincerely believes that if Rihanna, as a Caribbean Artiste, can make it to such heights, there is hope for Saint Lucian Artistes to achieve such feats over time. As “weird & obnoxious” as he may come across, Shayne takes pride in being comfortable in his own skin & encourages others to mirror such confidence.”I would love to share a stage with Damion Marley and a bunch of ecleptic people out there like Anthony Hamilton and Music Soul Child!” Shayne performed at the 2013 Saint Lucia’s Jazz on the Square & encourages people to join his free mailing list to subscribe to his music at www.shayneross.net to provide their input on his career. The title of his new album is “The Enigma Project.” The title was given birth after he looked in hindsight at his trialing path to creating this new album (completion date and final vision is a mystery to him). Shayne certainly is a Creole diamond in the Caribbean sky!

ichael Robinson’s voice is one of a kind & so is his personality. The 21 year old R&B/Soul divine sensation was
born on March 10th, 1992 and raised in a spiritually inclined family of 5. “In the next 5 years I see myself as a professional singer and I would like to be in a situation where I could tell people about 5 years ago in terms of how I started off, what got me to this place and I’d like to be singing some flash back songs. Mikey performed as a back-up singer for Irving “Ace’ Loctor, at the 2013 Saint Lucian Jazz & Arts Festival’s Main Stage. He viewed this as an outstanding opportunity to build new opportunities for his passion. A former student of the prestigious Saint Mary’s College, he yearns to further his educational studies in the diverse field of Marketing, to marketing his music efficiently in the future! Michael’s song titled,” My love song” became #1 on various local music countdowns & #3 on Saint Lucia’s top 60 countdown! Talk about a rising phoenix! Being a new artist who isn’t well known, Michael clutched onto this nation-wide acknowledgment as newly found inspiration. He performed at the 2013 Business Awards & the local television series Saint Lucia Rising!
Favorite Foods
Oh boy! Mikey favors barbeque wings, pies, lasagna & potato salad. He also enjoys dining at Big Chef Steak House. He is a lover of Vodka with cranberry juice, Chairman’s Reserve Rum & Nuvo.
MY STYLE
Now if you were pondering about Mikey’s personal style, here’s what he had to say to me,”I like to keep it simple. I love plain polo, shorts, polo shoes, um, everything polo!” Mikey loves wearing his blazers and occasionally a V-neck t-shirt. He enjoys keeping it simple with some jewelry & swag smacked right into his personal style. 25 Issue 7 Touché
HOT SPOT
Saint Lucia’s musical sensation can be found chillin’ at the hit bar Turbulence & also Route 69! The easy going environment which mellows with the familiar faces & great music is magnetic.
SPIRITUALITY
“If you live a life that is pleasing to God & you respect him every single day, then that’s the most important thing.” Michael is of the Pentecostal faith, regardless he isn’t focused on religious denominations.
MUSIC TALK
His current Number One musical icon is the Saint Lucian born rapper, Filbert Salton also known as Kayo, who now resides in Canada. Kayo has worked with the iconic American rapper Snoop Dogg & Canadian music producer Classified. He has set the bar for aspiring local musicians, quite comparable to Rihanna & Nicki Minaj for Barbados & Trinidad respectively, in their wake of their careers. He dreams of someday touring with Neyo and wished he got the chance to perform with Michael Jackson. Mikey envisioned the dynamic moment when he would be recording with Machel Montano and create a great Soca-R&B duet. Being featured on B.E.T is one of his aspirations. He knows it’s scarce for opportunities to be given to Saint Lucian Artistes who have the potential, which has taught him to “fight” for his dreams to become a reality.
