her? The Editor of this well received, classy Magazine? Well yes. I am this person, and for this very reason, TOUCHé was published, that our young St. Lucian Men and Women toil for their goals and pledge, “forget the obstacles. Focus on the goal. Forget the negative people who will try to keep you down. Forget all and focus on the goal. If I can achieve it, so can you. I am ever grateful to the GEN – X Project – RG Group of Companies, CEO Mr. Rayneau Gajadhar, for the assistance I was fortunate to receive. I also thank those who have accompanied me on my professional journey. Special thanks motivated toward Edward Harris, my staff, my family, and all who have participated in the development of Touché.

t’s a great pleasure to unveil issue 2 of TOUCHé- All Social Magazine. We at Digital Connections St. Lucia inc. strive to provide you with information that is valuable to you and your family members. Touché is dedicated to showcasing our St. Lucian people, St. Lucian culture, and our native art form. We also aim at giving you substantial product and service information to help you, our readers, make the right consumer-related decisions in the market place. It is a fact that this very company which brought you TOUCHé started from nothing-no loan, no finance. It began with a young St. Lucian woman birthing a vision. Occasionally, she would be found perusing the Castries town or roaming in the North of the island, and one would wonder- what is she up to? Indulging a strong sense of determination, she endeavored to contribute something valuable to St. Lucia, striving to play her part and determined to touch our people. Despite the numerous turn-downs, hard labor without pay, sleepless nights, midnight oil burning, and the aching of her right hand at the continuous clicking of the keyboard, she kept pushing. Sometimes I wonder, am I this young person? This single mother, this cast away who suddenly gained enlightenment? Am I 2

Skyy Vodka Flair creates whooping buzz on
Nite Life
contests had been staged in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), Jamaica and Barbados. Five contestants lined up to toss and twirl their liquor bottles, cups, glasses and shakers before an enthusiastic crowd of party lovers and nite-life groovers. The St Lucia leg was truly sensational with the bartenders performing various tricks flaring with bottles, shakers and putting on an enterprising showpiece. Four of the St Lucian contenders (Dilia Aybar: The Loft, Kershel St. Helen: H20, Randy Simon: Bay Garden Resorts, Keryl St. Helen: H20) representing different
here was a sizzling buzz and the excitement grew rampant bubbling over with energy at the H2O Restaurant and Bar at the Rodney Bay Marina, on the evening of September 18th , as Bryden and Partners in collaboration with World Flair Association (WFA) held its first ever Skyy Vodka Flair Global Challenge. This is the biggest Flair competition globally, going on for several years, and creating lots of attraction. Bryden’s was privileged to host the regional finals, as other preliminary rounds
night clubs, bars and hotels on the island were in for a big challenge against the Trinidadian barman Stephon Scott: League of Extraordinary Bartenders, Trinidad; since the winner of the regional challenge would be selected to represent the Caribbean in Barcelona, Spain. Rigorous one-week training prepared the local bartenders for the competition and expectations were high (literally), for the big occasion. The bartenders took their turns after briefs on the regulations, and then got their chance to mix and sizzle their stuff to a contingent of judges and an eager crowd marveling at the antics.
However, at the end of it all, the 24 year old Trinidadian maestro bartender Stephon Scott secured the winners’ prize— displaying a touch of class—in comparison to his first-time competitors. Nonetheless, Bryden and Partners Skyy Vodka/ Campari Manager, Ed Mathurin, was unperturbed with the outcome, and rather complemented the Lucian posse for putting on a favorable performance. “The Trinidadian competitor has been doing that for years, but I am proud of our guys, what they learned in a week did not translate. They went above and beyond and with more practice they can do very well,” said Mathurin.
To top it off, the Trinidadian bartender relishes his opportunity to go up against other global Skyy Flair challengers. The big contest involves 24 competitors coming from places such as Shangai, China, Dubai, Australia, USA and other countries. Brydens, distributors for Skyy Vodka in St Lucia partnered with H2O Restaurant to host the finals. Ed Mathurin is very upbeat about the event and plans to organize some more events, locally, so that bartenders on the island can get an opportunity to display their skills and take their careers up to a higher level. He was quick to put in a good word for the Skyy Vodka brand. “Skyy Vodka rates way up there above other vodka brands. It is one of the ultra-premium brands, known for its distinctive blue bottle, excellent in taste and neat with various mixes. One of the best vodkas you can drink!” exclaimed a thoroughly thrilled and excited Mathurin.

Silver Shadow Dancers burst out their fears
T
hey are a young dance troupe reverberating with talent, but, undoubtedly—the Silver Shadow Dancers— epitomize a raving enigma of the hidden cultural talent on St Lucia. After graduating from Secondary School along with some other classmates, in the late 90’s, Barry George, producer and director founded the group. Their initial exercise routine took them to various places, temporarily, most of the time and even flexing out in the open at the George IV Park (Gardens).
The dancers demonstrated an awe-inspiring display of creativity, meshed with artistic ingenuity and professional delivery; that was well received by the audience. Twelve dance pieces interlaced with the reverberating sounds of Creole rhythms, and the musical arrangement provided by gifted musician, Barbara Cadet, made for the amateur thrill of a Broadway production.
Nonetheless, they were set on a mission and George, the charismatic leader, had big plans ahead. It was tough going in the early days of their formation, but they stuck to the task of building one of the region’s most formidable dance ensembles. George is a weather-beaten tried and tested art enthusiast and its this nagging resilience that he inculcates into his young membership. He is totally fascinated with the local culture, traditional dance and wear and has intrinsically infused a mixture of traditional and contemporary dance forms to highlight their presentations.
Set pieces narrated and produced by George delved into the rigors and other attributes related to social ills. Utilizing his choreography skills with the portrayal of ideal traditional costumes, the dancers conjured up a stimulating effect to arouse consciousness and thus stir the emotions. Title acts included: The Ghetto, Misunderstood, Colors of Emotion, Conscious Chaos, The Block and Culturally Speaking. The young performers’ put on a riveting display as they sort to address the plight of young people in society and the malignant disease that encompasses the soul with frustration, whilst providing an option through drama and art to “Forget your troubles and dance”, as the late great Bob Marley sang.
In November 2009, the Silver Shadow Dancers celebrated their fifth anniversary and the production of “Breakout” stood out as a mesmerizing display of true grit and unreserved talent. The production was riveting and dynamic enough to warrant a requested repeat matinee performance to accommodate the younger audience.
In one of his more compelling pieces, George depicts the daily struggle of life in the ghetto and the struggle for survival: “Life in the ghetto is like a struggle, a societal struggle where there is always someone trying to put you down. Just maybe if our society begins to embrace each other in harmony we would be in a better position to build a nation rather
than fighting each other down.” His inspiration for choosing traditional dance moves hinges on village life: fishermen hauling in their nets, villagers washing at the river, Papa Jab and Masquerade and the other dance forms of La Rose and La Marguerite. George zones in on this aspect of rural life in another presentation, “Dance with the Villagers” to create a folk production that infuses modern dance and folklore. The young producer is definitely passionate about the arts and wants to see people in all forms of arts come together under one big umbrella body. George tells TOUCHé: “Our culture is moving on and I believe there is always a story to tell because I feel this is one way we can communicate with each other and other people.”

Health & Wellness Television
H
ealth and Wellness Television was established to give the St. Lucian television viewing public something a little different. The station’s audience is guaranteed an abundance of distinct and varied content, whilst business houses are met with opportunities both pleasing and diverse in regards to advertising. In relation to the kind of programming that is broadcasted on the channel, HWTV‘s aim is to distribute a wealth of content with subject matter relating closely to the channels name. Thus, their aim is to bring forth a multitude of programs not available on any other station in the country that relate directly to health and wellness. The station’s program range does not stop there. HWTV does and will always defer from representing ‘Health and Wellness’ solely through the transmission of medical, fitness, and nutritional programming. They have opted to take a more holistic approach to highlighting their main subject matter. Thus, transmitted and showcased is a wide variety of uplifting television programmes and films with a positive outlook. Whether through an informative business programme, a show dedicated to enlightening you on food, an appealing movie or a programme that highlights activities for families, what is on offer is informative, educational and inspirational programming. HWTV’s daily schedule includes an array of medical based programming, an hour of programming aimed at pre-schoolers, an hour of programming aimed at pre-teens, programs that stress on environmentally friendly living, science based documentaries, exclusive comedies and local shows. The station is also an advocate in bringing affordable television advertising to all. They offer a diverse set of rates to meet with every budget. A multitude of spots will play at anytime, never really reaching a clients target market. Instead they give you the opportunity to advertise around their scheduled programmes, thus reaching the exact audience that will be interested in that particular client product or service. It is guaranteed that the station’s clients will always be meeting their targeted market, whilst being able to monitor their ads continuously on the station. (All of this at cut price rates too!) In essence, HWTV really does offer that and much more, to audiences and clientele alike. Catch them on Channel 42, Lime and Channel 78, Karib Cable.

ktoberfest en Kweyol 2010 was a superb blast! Despite the inclement weather, hundreds of patrons braved the rains to converge at the event, held at Samaans Park, to enjoy their fill of beers, local cuisine and vintage Creole musical rhythms. The festivities definitely lived up to “the expectations” and the organizers seemed pleasantly delighted as the WLBL management team and staff moved about freely, mingling with the folks and taking in some onstage action, as well. the world have had their own adaptations of the event. In 2007, after a few runs, WLBL made a bold move to launch a Creole style version of—Oktoberfest En Kweyol—in St Lucia.
Dominica’s “Nature Isle” Midnight Groovers was the headline act and they produced a repertoire of their popular melodious hits that kept patrons wanting to groove and dance the night away. The Groovers lead vocalist infused more soul and passion in their performances, enticing the audience that “We gonna play till day break…”
WLBL organizers were especially pleased to incorporate Oktoberfest En Kweyol in St Lucia’s Creole Heritage Month, and set off the sparks to follow with celebrations leading to Jounen Kweyol festivities, on October 31.
WLBL acknowledges the partnership formed with the Folk Research Centre (FRC) and the St Lucia Tourist Board (SLTB), coming aboard as a partner in this year’s activities.
But the Lucian artistes were not to be left out, and after the serenading by the local Creole bands, it was the turn of some top local stars. Papa Vader, the 2010 Kaiso Monarch, was at his vintage best; wittily chanting and imploring the audience to sing along as he let go a barrage of his popular hits and more recent tunes, all tantalizing and “compelling you to dance”. Derek Yarde and his amazing DYP unit never cease to amaze. Derek mixes his humorous personality with crafty lyrics, incorporating reggae, zouk, soca and calypso into a pot of truly Caribbean indigenous music, delivered to a “T,” in perfection. His performance is truly an act to savor and more! Oktoberfest originated in Germany and gradually grew into the world’s biggest beer festival. Since then, several countries around

Last month, at a grand launch of Oktoberfest En Kweyol, Shelley Black, WLBL’s Marketing Manager, exclaimed that they were especially proud of Oktoberfest’s growing results over the past three years. “Oktoberfest En Kweyol has made an impressionable mark as a premier event on our calendar of events, while at the same time signaling the start of St Lucia’s Creole month activities,” he said. “After three short years, we have been very successful in achieving the merging of two great cultures into our very own Jounen Kweyol activities,” Mr. Black continued.

By all indications Oktoberfest En Kweyol turned out to be a superb, fun-filled festivity to herald in October’s Creole Heritage Month, and there’s a lot more to come!

St. Lucia’s culturally rooted
flower festivals
T
his gem of the Caribbean Islands —St Lucia, Helen of the West—posesses an intrinsically laced cultural heritage that is woven in tribal customs; intermingled with French, European and African traditions. Yet there is not a more vivid portrayal of its cultural expressions than the celebration of its annual flower festivals—La Woz and La Magwit—depicting “The Rose and “The Marguerite”. This traditional outpouring of song and dance is intertwined with rivalry and banter among two separate societies or historic associations. Ostensibly based around singing the virtues of the rose and marguerite flowers, the societies are intense rivals, and their membership consists of an increasing number of young and older folks, primarily, in the countryside areas. Lately, though, the festival has spread to the suburbs and outskirts of the city and its environs, taking in young school students as well, who take a great pleasure in patronizing the festival with delicate preparations and an elaborate display of costumes. Each society has a Patron Saint on whose feast day the grande fete is celebrated. For the Roses it is the feast of St. Rose of Lima on the 30th August; and for the Marguerites it is that of St. Margaret
Mary Alacocque, 17th October. These flower festivals are unique to St. Lucia and are major events in the cultural life and history of the country. The names La Woz and La Magawit are sobriquets baptized from Creole, a language that combines a European vocabulary with a West African based grammar. The societies originated in the time of slavery as co-operative work groups created for mutual support, and assistance in time of trouble. These groups were similar to the Dokpwé of Mahoney, and the Coumbite of Haiti. The two societies are vaguely inspired on two mystic orders that were active at the time in Europe, Rosicrucian’s and Freemasonry. This connection is depicted in a mural painted by Dunstan St. Omer, which shows the Holy Trinity of Osiris, Horus and Isis. In former years the St Lucian society was split in affiliation to one or the other group. At times membership has been illegal, and it has also been condemned by the Roman Catholic Church. Nevertheless the societies survived, although their nature has changed through the centuries. As the general society changed, so
did the sociétés, becoming more commercial and money-oriented. In time, other organizations were created for money saving and social security. Nowadays, the two historical societés are largely devoted to solidarity through recreation. At the time of Saint Lucia’s Independence, when the national symbols – tree, bird, flower etc – were being defined, St Lucia chose to have two flowers, a rose and a marguerite. Both societies have a formal hierarchic structure patterned upon the socio-economic structure of colonial society. Each society has a king and a queen, as well as princes, princesses, and many other symbolic legal, military and professional roles, such as judges, policemen, nurses and soldiers. Touché 11

Preparations for the yearly festivals begin several months before the actual feast day. Each group holds “séances”. These consist of all night singing and dancing sessions where drinks are sold and games are played. The central figure at the “séances” is the shatwel or leadsinger who sustains the spirit and tenor of the entertainment. Most groups have one outstanding shatwel. They are usually female. Strict protocol is observed at those nightly séances, with every visitor or participating member, bowing to the King and Queen upon entering, who are present with their court. Police and soldiers in uniform enforce regulations against any disorder, breaches of protocol, or what are considered misdemeanors. Offenders are taken before a magistrate for a mock trial and then fined.
12 Tou-
On the actual day of the festival all members of the society dress in the finery of their respective roles and march to Church for a service which precedes their parade through the streets before returning to the hall for their feasting or grande fete. Whereas in some countries, the population may be divided into classes and castes, in the context of Saint Lucia‘s Cultural traditions there exist two Societies‘, Roses and Marguerites - singing societies whose members are dedicated to the praising of those respective flowers. The Grande fete is celebrated, first with church services throughout the island and afterwards with processions through the streets, the principal personages magnificently attired. In the evening there is a sumptuous banquet to which dignitaries and leading personalities are invited. The rest of the evening is spent in dancing. One can then witness and participate in some of the colorful folk dances, the Quadrille, the Mappa, the Belair and such alike.

The book was inspired by a vision that I had in 2008. Coming from nowhere near where I am today when I had this vision, I had not even started my business. No questions were asked, I just did what I was told. God is with us even when we think he is nowhere to be found. I trusted in him and I believed God was changing my life and in doing so, I wrote A BETTER LIFE.
The book is about enlightment, using the power that is within us to accomplish our goals and to live life in abundance. By using the power of the mind, and saying to yourself I’m happy when you are not, you become happy. If you say I’m healthy when you are not, you begin to feel revitalized and your current sate of health would change to what you affirmed to yourself. People on the Go
My message to other young people is believe in GOD, set goals, chat your course and stay focus. Find substance in everything you do. Idle conversations, going places which lead to nowhere, spending time with people who make you feel distressed, low and contribute nothing mentally, physically or spiritually to your well being is a waste of time. WAKE UP! This life is the only one you’re sure of, so seek good council and let your goals choose your friends. The only meaning your life will ever have is the one you give it. Life is Wonderful

The Music and the Journey of
EMRAND HENRY 2010 Marlin Award Winner!
D
ecember 31st is the time of year many individuals take the opportunity to make New Year’s resolutions. For Emrand Henry 2009 marked the change of the journey he is on currently. He opened 2010 with a grand performance in St. Maarteen, at the New Year’s youth concert, where he saw many young people come together as they danced and opened the year 2010. Emrand Henry made the decision to resign from his day time job and enter his musical career full time. In February, He performed in Barbados at the Hozia Hinds album “Breaking Out” launch. During his stay in Barbados he had the opportunity to work with super producer Sherwin Gardener from Trinidad and Tobago. Their hit single “Bad Man Role,” was number one on the charts in Kenya for three months from February to May of 2010. In April, Emrand performed in Miami alongside Jamaica’s finest St. Matthew at the Humility Festival where he was well received. While there he collaborated with Jamaican producer Stephen Murphy on his latest album, “Line Up Di Troops Dem”. The album features Jamaican artists Reality, St.Matthew and Ordinary. Soon after he recorded a tribute song to St.Lucia entitled “Blue, White, Black and Yellow,” with St.Lucian Christopher Neil of Big as Life Studio, in New Jersey. While in America, Emrand was invited to perform at several youth concerts in the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn, which occupied his time every weekend for a few months. He also performed at the Hopeton Lewis Gospel Music Awards, where he was awarded two prestigious awards; “City Council Citation” of the city of New York and “Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition,” from the US House Of Representatives”.
performanced an encore during that concert. Emrand Henry’s tour in the USA was interrupted by the special invitation of St.Lucia’s government to perform at the Homecoming event in July. It was a privilege to be back home and at this special event. Emrand’s journey continues as he connects with promoters all over the world to perform and enlarge his borders in the Music/ Entertainment Industry. TIPS TO EATING HEALTHY How can we eat healthy while living on a tight budget? 1. Buy locally.
5. Eat seasonally.
Be sure to head down to the Castries market or your local farmer’s in your community. Sometimes foods are only minimally sprayed (or not sprayed at all). If there’s produce you want to buy in bulk (so you can preserve it), be sure to see if local farmers will give you a discount for bulk purchases.
Seasonal foods not only taste better, they are more nutritious and they don’t need to be shipped in from half a world away! Seasonal foods will often cost less as well. Think ahead and stock up on fruits and vegetables in their natural season in order to can or freeze them for the off season.
2. Buy in bulk.
6. Grow your own.
Buying bulk can save a lot of money. You can purchase grains, pastas, dried fruits, nuts and flours in the bulk isles of your grocery or natural foods store. You can choose the amount that works for your family (bulk doesn’t mean you need 25 pounds of rice at a time!), and bulk food sections give a lower price per quantity ratio while saving on packaging.
If you really want garden-fresh organic produce, why not plant your own? Organic and heirloom seeds are available from companies such as Garden Centre. Start small — carrots, radishes and beets are easy to grow. Starting a family garden is a fantastic way to engage the whole family in prioritizing healthy foods.
3. Eat less meat. There is no way around it — purchasing grass-fed, organic, pastured, free-range, or hormone-free animal products cost more. The good news is that most St. Lucian’s eat more meat than they need to. Buying higher cost, quality meats but eating less of them is an excellent way to balance the costs. 4. Emphasize grains and legumes. Grains and legumes are inexpensive and pack a nutritional power punch. Plus, they add heaviness to a meal that most people rely on meat for.
7. Forgo processed foods. While it may seem like some processed foods are cheaper, the real steal is on the nourishment they provide. Empty calories still leave us hungry for real food. When we spend money on real, whole, organic and fresh foods, it is essential that we shift our old ways of food shopping.
vegetables, I clean them well. A quick homemade soak is equal parts water and white vinegar, or you can use a veggie wash like Environne, which removes chemicals from the surface. Because pesticides are created to be water-resistant (they have to stay on even when it rains), just water is often not enough to get the chemicals off. Limit your intake of junk food and alcohol. Drink lots of water (at least 8 cups a day) Limit salty and sugary foods Avoid eating many foods that are high in saturated fats. Make “variety” the watchword of your eating. Each person and family must make financial choices that are right for them. Small shifts in the way we feed our families can help us find that sweet spot between staying responsible with our budgets, and feeding ourselves and our families with healthy, organic and vital foods.
8. Clean non-organic produce well with pesticide washes. For most of us, it’s not realistic to eat all organic all the time — organic options aren’t always available, and sometimes the cost is prohibitive. When I purchase conventional fruits and Touché 19
How many times have you said, “ I want a flat stomach, a really toned body.” I would definitely want to tuck in my tummy, we all admire the toned body of a male or female. How much more attractive it is to have muscles instead of flab? When you tone your body, you are simply replacing fat with muscle. Some of us think that lifting weights will automatically result in a toned body. This is a misconception held by many people. You have to combine some type of weight loss plan to lose the fat that covers the muscles. Light or even heavy weight lifting helps, but it does not automatically tone your body. Whether you‘re young or old, it is always possible to get a toned body. Here is the expert’s top five tips for achieving a toned body and some ways to tighten your body parts: Maintain a healthy diet – more protein, less fat and sugar. No alcohol. Daily walks – walking for at least 30 minutes every day does wonders for your metabolism and your goal for a toned body. Drink water – as much as possible, not only to tone your body, but to keep the kidneys and digestive system working properly. Exercise – at a gym, in a park, at home, or wherever you choose. Equipment and location is not as important as the regular routine you follow to tone your body. Stretching – essential for flexibility and coordination. Runners and sports figures know the value of stretching or warming up before exercising. It can help wth toning various areas of your body. 20 Touché
BODY TONING Tone Body Areas Legs – Jogging is often recommended, however, a brisk walk can be just as effective over time. Step ups and climbing stairs help tone your body Butt – Nothing is probably better than doing squats to tone body glutes. Adding some weights while doing squats is even more beneficial. Thighs - Lunges, leg raises, and squats again. You can stand up, holding on to a chair, and raise first the right and then the left leg out to the side of your body. Try to hold it there for a few seconds. Abs - You can also tone body areas and tighten up those stomach muscles by lying on the floor, and raising both legs, or one at a time, holding for a few seconds and repeat. (Note: This is great exercise for strengthening your back, as well.)
Hit the Gym Of course, going to the gym is great, but don‘t let the range of equipment or people around you intimidate you. Some of them won‘t have a toned body either, and others may have worked many hours to get one. There should be a trainer to get you started. Some of the most common types of equipment are: Cross-trainer – good for upper and lower body, as well as cardiovascular. Bicycles – great to tone body areas such as the legs and stomach. Treadmills – a mechanized alternative to brisk walking. You can set speed and resistance, and monitor the heart rate at the same time.
SECRETS SHAMPOOING THE RIGHT WAY TO GREAT HAIR
By Lisberth Augustin Body Image Beauty Studio
The way your hair looks can make or ruin your appearance completely. Beautiful hair completes any appearance. Your hairstyle has to be perfect for you to look your best. But remember, having great hair takes time and effort. And it is definitely worth it for a picture perfect hair. Most of us think we have this all down, but for all we know, we might be wrong. After all, we have been washing our hair all our lives. How could we go wrong with something like washing our hair? However, we might be washing our hair the wrong way and contribute to its damage without actually knowing it. What we should remember about our hair is that the individual strands of our hair, no matter how thick or strong it looks, is actually very delicate. So we cannot just tug and pull at it, or else it would break. We would not want to have hair breakage would we? So, what is the right way of washing the hair?
The first thing you should do is to comb the tangles out of the hair before you wet it so the hair would wash easily and the tangles would not worsen. And then, wet your hair thoroughly. Rinsing your hair rids it of the leave-on conditioner and styling aids you have used previously, using gentle strokes of your fingertips. You can use either warm or cold water if you like, but for best results, you can wet your hair with warm water to open
the scale-like cuticles of the hair and wash all the oil and dirt off. Pour a small amount of shampoo in the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together, and then apply the shampoo to your scalp. Take note that you should put the shampoo on your scalp and not at the ends of your hair, as the shampoo would dry your hair ends and cause it to weaken and split. Also, do not mix your hair all over your head as you shampoo because it will get all tangled up. After this, rinse the shampoo off. The most important objective of shampooing is to clean your scalp, not wrestle your hair, so concentrate on massaging gently and allow suds to be distributed throughout thet hair while rinsing. Then, you can rinse your hair with cold water afterwards to close the cuticles and add to the shine of your hair. More often than not, we need to shampoo our hair for a second time. The purpose of the first shampoo is to clean the oil and dirt off; the second shampoo is
supposed to let the shampoo treat our hair. So, repeat the process, but let the shampoo sit on for around a couple of minutes. Rinse the hair completely after this. To get the excess water off your hair, just squeeze the water out. Do not pull or tug at the hair because the hair is at its most delicate when it is soaked. Apply some conditioner in one hand and rub palms together to evenly distribute. Apply conditioner from the middle of the hair shaft down to ends; do not massage conditioner onto scalp unless scalp is dry. Comb through hair to distribute product evenly. Leave conditioner on hair long to help smooth the cuticle: it only takes a few seconds. Or pile your hair inside a shower cap and let the conditioner stay there for around ten minutes, then rinse it off completely. Tips •
The selection of the shampoo should depend upon the hair type.
•
Egg shampoo is good for dry hair but avoid products which contain alcohol as they will dry out the hair even further.
•
For oily hair use some mild shampoo.
•
Care should be taken while using shampoo.
•
Do not scrub or over massage.
•
It is better to rinse thoroughly with Luke warm water.
•
7. If the hair is too oily, add lemon juice in luke warm water and rinse.

believe that being a beautiful St Lucian woman all comes out in the individuals character and the way she projects herself. Many women spoil their image by saying something the wrong way or talking too much. I believe that if you have a high self esteem, ambition and believe in yourself, achieving the unthinkable is more beautiful than outward appearance. Someone who is confident, hard working and phychologically independent of the opposite sex or parents, is one of the most beautiful qualities of a woman.
T
Confidence
he term ‘Beautiful’ does not define what is on the outside but more importantly what lies within. A Beautiful Saint Lucian woman knows who she is and is not easily persuaded to think otherwise. She stands up for her beliefs. She embraces her culture to the fullest and walks proudly with her head held high without looking down at others. She represents her country where ever she goes. For her, make-up is not a necessity but she may apply a little at times. She does not obsess over the ever changing Fashion Trends, her wardrobe is full of life, she has a great personality and is down to earth. She also walks along the side of ‘The Almighty’. To top it off, she must have the right amount of confidence and self-esteem. These are a few things that make our Saint Lucian women beautiful.

t. Lucia, Simply Beautiful- like the slogan says, St. Lucian women are simply beautiful. A beautiful St. Lucian woman is polite, respectful, considerate and also refined. A beautiful woman has a unique personality, which forms her character and makes her interesting. Her attitude also tells you something about her, in the way she thinks and her positive outlook. She also respects herself and others.

ello Readers,
I am Miss Jamara Smith. I was born and raised in the lovely town of VieuxFort. I am presently an Entertainment Coordinator at The Coconut Bay Beach Resort and Spa. My hobbies are writing poetry, reading whatever I can get my hands on, singing and dancing. I love science, nature, smiling, making other people laugh, spending quality time with family and listening to music. I am a member of the Divine Modeling Agency and the Cover Girl for the first issue of the Touché Magazine. As an individual, I love setting a standard and being unique as much as possible. Confidence is one of the things that will most definitely help you through life. As Miss Trend Setter, the following is what I have to say to you, the youth of Saint Lucia: One should always aim to stand out of the so called ‘in crowd’. There is nothing I hate more than walking proudly and feeling sexy in my new outfit, only to realize that I have twin sisters. After going shopping, I observe my surroundings before wearing what I bought. If it is too common, then I wear it when the trend dies. One must never forget that the way you dress depicts your character and personality. It is a means of self expression. Therefore, you could be portraying something totally different by conforming to the present trend. I am not saying that you cannot satisfy your shopping hunger. !! You should!! However, buy fashion trends that stand out, that are not ordinary, and designs that fit your body type. Instead of conforming, become the Trend Setter. Experiment with colour schemes, 26 Touché
thus finding out what colours fit your complexion. Make sure the colour lifts your face and adds a little sugar and spice to what you already have that is nice. You can wear a little something old with something new. Think outside of the box, be creative, innovative. Do not limit yourself to what you know. All you need now to strengthen your outfit is a nice pair of heels and a little make-up. Go light on the makeup because you most certainly do not want to look fake or plastered. You should always aim to be different and stand out. Make your own fashion statement, one that depicts you and only you for you are unique and be proud of who you are. There is no one on earth like you.

This year 2010 marks ten (10) years since the establishment of the James Belgrave Micro Enterprise Development Fund Inc. (BeLfund). To the management and staff of the organization, most of whom have been with the organization throughout its existence, this is a remarkable achievement, especially when one considers the numerous challenges the organization has had to face. However, through the dedication and commitment of the staff, the organization had been able to plod on and today, we can say that we have done our part in achieving, to some extent, the mandate set out by the Government.
The James Belgrave Micro Enterprise Development Fund Inc. (BeLfund) was established primarily to assist the poor, deprived, underprivileged and unemployed St. Lucian Micro Entrepreneurs who have thus far been unable to access credit facilities.

Mr. Henry Mangal former Chairman of The BeLfund presenting certification of appreciation to long standing Client Mr. Benjamin Duncan The BeLfund was established to meet the following objectives: 1. To promote sustainable development through self-help micro enterprise projects for individuals, families and groups among the less privileged sectors through the provision of low cost loans, enterprise training, technical assistance and other support services. 2. To encourage small-scale enterprise projects, which will provide social relief and improve the standard of living of residents. 3. The James Belgrave Micro Enterprise Development Fund Inc (BeLfund) commenced its business operations on May 31st, 2000 at #31 Leslie Land Road in Castries. To date many persons have been interviewed in first interviews, and second interviews are continued to be conducted. Since opening for business, a total of six hundred and forty-five (645) loans have been approved at a total value of approximately 7.35 million dollars in the following areas of business; Service & Trade, Manufacturing & Industry, Retail & Distribution, Fishing, Farming/Animal Husbandry and Agriculture. SUCCESSES: A total of fifty-five (55) training sessions in Micro Enterprise Management have been conducted at the BeLfund’s facilities over the years with a total of six hundred (600) clients and thirty-eight (38) non-clients participating. To date, six hundred and twenty-five (625) loans (which include additional loans to existing clients) have already been disbursed at a total value of $7.35 million, and in the process at least one thousand and thirty-five (1035) direct jobs have been created, while at least nine hundred seventy-five (975) indirect short-term jobs created as a result the numerous renovations, extensions
TIPS FOR SUCCESS Long standing Staff Members receiving awards for long service and other minor construction works undertaken in the various businesses by the clients. In other areas of success it can be safely said that more of the BeLfund’s target market, which is the Grass roots sector, and more so the youth, have been benefiting from the programme and receiving assistance as opposed to in the early stages of business. Whilst this is a very positive sign, we are cognizant of the fact that more needs to be done to get more of those persons coming forward to receive assistance from the BeLfund. Today, the BeLfund’s clients can be found in every nook and cranny of Saint Lucia from the north to the south, east and west. We pride ourselves on having at least one (1) or more clients in every constituency of the island. Gender and Age of Participants: Of the six hundred (600) persons who have benefited from BeLfund’s assistance, 293 are Female while 307 are Male. The age range of beneficiaries from the BELfund’s programme of assistance to date is from 18 years to 74 years. However of the total number of persons benefiting from the programme at least 50% are young persons between the ages of 18 – 35 years old. The Future: Ten (10) years for an organization like the BeLfund is an amazing achievement and we look upon that achievement with a lot of pride, when one considers the limited resources which we have had to work with. However, while we know and understand that the next ten (10) years will be even more challenging than the first, we look down the road with much optimism and are of the belief that our achievements then, will far exceed what we have accomplished thus far.

I
am delighted to be invited again to write an article in the 2nd Issue of this very informative magazine. Although I am currently at “Large” in Tanzania, East Africa seeking to fulfill one of my dreams (to be a published Author) that has eluded me for much too long, I am pleased to share with you some Tips for Success in your life and business. In the first Issue, I wrote on the topic of Affirmation. It is my sincere hope that many of you have put the recommended Success Principle into action. I shared the knowledge with you, now it is up to you to implement it. I am living my Dream Life because of Affirmation. I invite you to share yet again some power TIPS that can change your financial circumstance and afford you a stress free life. Touché
12 POWERFUL SUCCESS TIPS Tip #1 Don’t be in business for the sake of being in business. If your business is not giving you the excitement that you expected, it is time to take stock and make a decision to do what is necessary to rekindle your interest or move on. Never be afraid to move on. Failures are lessons to learn from. The more you fail, the more likely you are to succeed and in no small measure. I am that stage in my life.
Tip #2 Business is like a love affair. You must be passionate about your involvement in your business. It is all about adding value. Napoleon Hill speaks about SEX TRANSMUTATION. You must demonstrate pride and energy in your business. I would like to suggest you get a copy of his book – “THINK AND GROW RICH”, now available on the Internet for FREE. You have absolutely no excuse to get your FREE copy.
Tip #3 You will only succeed when you help others to succeed. Selfish success will be short lived and miserable. Sharing and Caring are two important words. Make a difference by sharing your ideas with others in business and social interest groups. Lots of heartaches could be saved by sharing timely information. I am amazed at the amount of valuable information I receive on a daily basis by networking and sharing the ideas and opportunities I have been blessed to receive.
Tip #4 Accept your Social Responsibility and deliver beyond expectation. You will be a better person and your community will be a better place for everyone. Born Again Christians sow Seeds by giving to their brothers and sisters in need. It is normal for Christians who have experienced the amazing results of sowing seeds to give substantial amounts of money to others in need. Start today in some small way to begin to take note as to how you can help others. Try your best to be a BLESSING!
Tip #5 Be mindful about creating debt. Only borrow for productive purposes, all other transactions should be in cash. Credit costs money. If you build a property for cash you will keep all the interest on the mortgage and have twice as much money in twenty years.
Tip #6 Only buy when renting is not a feasible option. It is quite a while since Bridegrooms and their groomsmen are renting their entire outfit. If a man could marry in a rented suit, what else that is available for legitimate rental that he shouldn’t rent? The ladies rent too; only they are more reluctant to do so as they feel a sense of pride to keep it in the wardrobe until death do them part. Leasing is a very attractive alternative in many instances. Developed countries have Leasing companies for almost anything. If you like the flexibility of living in various communities, leasing is an option to consider. Get friendly with a Real Estate Agent and get in on the rental deals. There is also the possiblity to lease with the option to buy.
Tip #7 Negotiate everything. If you think that you should negotiate and the seller refuses a discount, don’t buy. Due diligence is important. Price surveys are necessary in today’s world. The Internet affords you the option of comparing almost anything. Don’t be lazy.
Tip #8 Seek out every opportunity to save, not spend. Reduce costs in your business and in your personal life.
Tip #9 Dress to impress. Stand out in the crowd, don’t be another person in the crowd. Learn to admire yourself to the point that you can smile with yourself.
Tip #10 Expand your range of products /services within its category wherever possible. Resist spreading yourself too thin, try to be focused. Take a good look at www.Amazon.com and note how they have expanded their services staying in their category. Most major companies, right here in Saint Lucia have done just that.
Tip 11 Keep up to date with Industry Developments. Read all you can about your industry, visit trade fairs, etc.
Tip # 12 Set up a belief system and a Master Mind Group. Practice your Faith and develop a group of persons around you who share your vision. Don’t be a time waster; put your energies to work and network your way to success.

Let’s go Metric!
the big project! S
aint Lucians are being urged to adapt to utilizing the latest global business trend involving the use of the Metric System. In an effort geared towards increasing public awareness so that persons are better able to transact business in compliance with international standards, the Saint Lucia Metrication Secretariat held a week of activities to observe Saint Lucia’s first ever National Metric Day on October 10, 2010. As part of the activities a national metric baby was identified and recognized. St. Jude hospital excitedly announced the birth of Javel Mederick King at 2:37 a.m. on 10.10.10., weighing 3855 grams. Sponsors of the metric baby were Bryden and Partners Limited and Renwick & Company in the form of hampers. Bryden & Partners Limited has committed to extend sponsorship until October 2011.

It is worthy of note that the National Metric Day on October 10 will be observed annually. According to Australian Pat Naughtin, metric consultant, speaker, writer and editor “ I would plump for (the 10th day of the 10th month each - and every – year) to be called ‘International Metrication Day’ to give emphasis to the word ‘metrication’. This would then focus on the processes we need to use to move further toward full use of the metric system in all trades, crafts, and professions.” Pat Naughtin has been recognized by the United States Metric Association as a Lifetime Certified Advanced Metrication Specialist. He has successfully assisted many governments and industries around the world with their metrication process. Another major event of the Secretariat was a metric exhibition held at the Castries City Hall. Several businesses collaborated with the Secretariat to stage the four-day display of various facets of the metric system employed in the purchase of products and materials. Students of the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School displayed a project clearly illustrating the scientific nature of the Metric System, one that can measure any thing in the universe from the smallest object to the universe itself. Referring to the activities of metric week and its importance to public education, the Coordinator of the Saint Lucia Metrication Secretariat Judy Rene explained: “ We want, not only to heighten their awareness, but we want the public to get
involved and participate in this important change process, to take ownership of the process and begin to make a personal transition – to think, talk, walk and use metric.” Rene added that lots of people are resisting the change, therefore the Secretariat has employed many approaches to inform and educate the public: road shows, town hall meetings, panel discussions on popular media talk shows; distribution of flyers, brochures, promotional items and conducting free training seminars to assist companies with their metrication process. One of the policies of the Metrication Board is that no business should be
in jeopardy as a result of metrication. Therefore every effort is being made to assist small shop owners, schools, Health Centres and segments
of the Agricultural Sector with retooling. Through the assistance of SEQUA, an EU funded project many small shop owners around the island will be provided with metric scales and training in the use of the scales. Here are some Metric tips for every day use: • Metre is used to measure length • Kilogram is used to
• •
measure mass (weight) Degree Celsius is used to measure temperature Litre is used to measure volume
The Metric System is a decimal system with all its units in multiples of ten (10). Now instead of uneven numbers and fractions, you have a simple way to measure. Metric is Here! Lets measure up!

Why not make your home a Tropical Home
You might be looking to decorate your house in a relaxed and laid back manner. Tropical home décor is a nice option for a home style when you’re living in the Caribbean; there are many ideas to choose from when it comes to incorporating that tropical look in your home. #1: Plants Tropical plants are a wonderful way to give any home a tropical feel, and look best when they are placed near a window. It is the most common thing that people do when they decide to implement tropical home décor into their home. You can get one or more tropical plants. Before purchasing real tropical plants, make sure you don’t have allergies to them; you should also know in advance how you are going to take care of your exotic plants. The temperature in the room you intend to keep the plant in must be rather balmy, as that is the only way the plant can thrive. If you find it difficult to care for a live tropical plant, then there is always the option of purchasing a fake one.

#2: Seashells Take a walk by one of our beautiful beaches on a sunny day and pick up a few shells. Seashells are the best way to evoke the feeling of tropics in your home. The shells can be used as a table centerpiece, or they could be attached to the wall. There are many items that are made out of seashells, like lamps, so be sure to investigate all of your options, because they can enhance your tropical home décor.
#3: Vibrant Colors We live on a Caribbean island; so you have noticed that a lot of houses are painted with very vibrant colors, such as bright orange, green, and pink. This actually serves a practical purpose: brighter colors deflect sunlight and keep homes cooler. Regardless of whether or not you wish to enact some temperature control in your home, why not paint the walls of your home a tropical color? Not only will it make the room appear larger, the bright colors will be a nice contrast to the weather in the rainy season. With a festive feeling of your house all year-round you are sure to get a lot of positive energy and great mood any season.

he world continues to change – and so do relationships between and among persons. Take that between young persons and their parents. That’s under constant change – and therefore constantly in need of review. The generational changes are continuous and therefore important to track and trace, adapt to and adopt, over time, all the time. The relationship I had with mum was always okay, but that with my dad was quite differ46 Touché
ent from that I have with my young sons and daughter. But while there are vast differences, there are indeed similarities. Like in my case with my dad, I kiss and cuss, I blow-up and make-up, but we all love each other to Heaven and back. Like all young persons today, they all “Try ah ting” from time to time. They get away with some things I couldn’t get away with in my time; but I also did many of the things they do today and I was better at it. Similarly, there are habits and hobbies we share and those we don’t. But it’s been quite an experience watching them grow
into young adults. I keep a healthy and respectful relationship with them and their friends, but I don’t take my eyes off them. They are a constant study of life I jointly created unfolding before my very eyes. But, are today’s young men and women (of St. Lucia and the Caribbean) really or yet ready for adulthood? That’s the question parents my age, the new generation of grandparents are asking each other. We throw our hands up in despair. But, should that be all we’re doing? Shouldn’t
we also be asking our young persons, those at our homes, some of whom have already become young parents and with whom we are also growing up as adults? Parents everywhere, every day, are throwing their arms up in the air in despair. Many have given up, but not all. Many say today’s young people are simply “lost”, but not all. Similarly, many young persons feel their parents “will never understand us” -- but not all. Many are proceeding silently but purposefully along their own chosen paths but not all. There’s increasing evidence – on both sides – of a preparedness to buck the trend. If you try to find out, you’ll find that more young persons are showing that, given the opportunity and/or encouragement, they will sit and talk with their parents about things. Similarly, more of today’s concerned parents and young grandparents are taking practical forward steps to engage with today’s young. Let’s take two examples of the bridges being built between the generations today in St. Lucia. First, look at the magazine you’re reading right now, in hand or on line. It’s the product of one young parent who’s made her mind up about what she wants to do and where she wants to go. Now, she’s well underway, thanks to her own tenacity and some help from the Gen X project, the brainchild of Rayneau Gajadhar, a progressive young local businessman (who’s also a concerned young parent) offering St. Lucian youth an avenue today to become the business persons of tomorrow. Secondly, take RISE Inc, a group of mainly young parents who also belong to the current generation of new grandparents. Their programs are aimed at children and youth, to expose them to the world of possibilities that exist at home and abroad. They advocate domestic application of universally accepted children and young people’s rights, but they also seek and provide opportunities for young persons to broaden and deepen their sense of responsibility for themselves and to their families. The best known example so far was
their courageous and successful move to secure places and guarantees of finanial support for almost 30 local students to study technical subjects at the USA’s Illinois Institute of Technology. The sort of entrepreneurial initiative that led you to be reading this magazine and the generational social intercourse being encouraged and engaged in by RISE need to be further developed at individual and organizational levels , not only here but across the Caribbean. But it mustn’t stop at only creating new businesses or securing scholarships. It must be taken further. Much further. I’ve long been thinking that today’s parents of young persons from children to youth need to be encouraged and led to engage in both direct and collective engagement. The young need to be spoken to, but they also need to be heard and listened to. Historically, the communication has been a top-down talk by parent to child. That traditional process now needs to be equalized or balanced through a reversal in which the parents are willing to listen to what their children and other young persons have to say, no matter their age. Such inter-generational and parents/children/youth exchanges could be done collectively between parents and youth, through appropriately arranged, friendly social settings, at which both sides are willing to listen and agree -- as well as agree to disagree. Out of this can come several related outreach programs that would have considered the findings from these practical sessions between the closest generations. The issue of “children having children,” for example, can be just one of the ongoing topics discussed in such a setting with young single parents, considering issues relating to children’s upbringing and rights and parents’ responsibilities. Out of that too can come
By Earl Bousquet
an endless series of outreach programs to delinquent young parents and so on… I’ve actually moved from thinking to talking to other parents about this. I’ve also spoken to young persons -- and both sides readily welcome the idea. But it’s still an idea… So, what about you? As a young person or adult, single or married parent, how do you feel about this idea? What are your own ideas for building a communication bridge between youth and parents, young and older persons? If you’re interested, let us know. TOUCHÉ would surely be interested in your responses to this article. Send your comments to: admin@touche.biz
