ST. LUCIAN PICK’S

Legacy Internationally known for his work

J

allim Eudovic has been a confirmed artist from the tender age of five. A prodigy in every sense of the word, Jallim has a natural affinity for the arts but as he proudly admits, his father and famed St. Lucian sculptor, Vincent Joseph Eudovic has been his greatest mentor. Though his first love is sculpting, Jallim is receptive to all genres of art which includes painting and the literary arts to name a few. With an unbridled passion, deep social and cultural conscience, thought provoking and awe-inspiring style, it is no wonder that this twenty nine year old artist has acquired international acclaim for his work. So far Jallim has held exhibitions in Paris, Ottawa, Africa, China, Martinique and

England. However, his greatest achievement to date occurred when he was commissioned by the Chinese Government to create a monumental bronze sculpture for the Changchun International Sculpture Park in China (2008), the world’s biggest sculpture park. His sculp¬ture “Nature” was so impressive and well received by the Directors of the Park that they commissioned him to create a second sculpture for Changchun Urban Sculpture Museum”, China’s largest urban sculpture museum. He was also re-invited to china subsequent to his return to St. Lucia to create another monumental sculpture, this time for the Changchun Automotive Park(2010), a park when completed will celebrate the automobile from past to present and will also be the largest of its kind in the world’. In 2011 Jallim was again selected amongst hundreds of international sculptors to create

yet another monument called “LEAP” in China, this time for the Changchun Hi-Tech Sculpture Park in China. Jallim was commissioned in 2011 by the Governor General of St. Lucia to create the gift for Prince Williams and Duchess Kate Royal Wedding on behalf of the people and Government of St. Lucia. Doors are also opening for Jallim in The UK in the wake of his successful exhibition entitled “KOUD¬MEN” which focused on indigenous St. Lucian customs but concurrently making a powerful statement on humanity and that we need to revisit our core , our true purpose which is to love and care for each other. The success of the “KOUDMEN” exhibition caught the attention of the Queens Royal Committee and they have consequently approved one of Jallim’s sculptures to be created in honor of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Commission by Chang chun Automotive Sculpture Organization, Beijing 2010 This is where manufacturing of most cars takes place. Artist from all over the world were invited to submit their proposition, out of 2000 Talented Artist worldwide, 25 were selected to participate in the project of Creating a Beautiful Park. Jallim’s theme called Innovation Leap Dream were one of those selected.

Innovation Leap Dream Leap symbolizes the spirit of progress fueled by man’s unyielding desire to explore new possibilities. Our frame of mind is what ultimately determines our progress in life. Though we are limited by the confines of our circumstances and resources, steps into realizing our goals must be guided by judicious thinking. Mankind is continually at the thresh-hold of technological advancement and this has been a catalyst of our evolution. Most significant in this thrust is education, we must persist to develop young minds so that they may take on the mantle of leadership tomorrow, we must teach them the importance of aptitude but must also place strong emphasis on attitude and spirituality if we are to make a significant leap forward.

A gift for Prince Williams and Duchess Kate Royal Wedding

K

oudmen is a simple humanist philosophy of people caring for each other and where selfassurance comes in knowing that one belongs to something greater — the village. When a house was destroyed in times past the members of the village came together to rebuild it – not as labourers but in a labour of love. They came together in a tradition of collective resilience, a communal spirit that today could serve as an effective form of social rescue. This story is told through the grain of dark stained wood echoing Saint Lucian cultural traditions that resonate across borders celebrating community spirit rather than self-indulgence. “Ish Mwen” (My Child) — celebrates women and that the foundation of our world starts and ends in the nurturing cradle of a mother’s love. “Sou Sou” (sharing of money) — represents the collective wealth of a village whose true value can be found in the quality of the riches each member is willing to share with a neighbour and “Tewe” (burial) — examines grief and death but also the joy of having the spirit of an ancestor ready to protect and guide us towards the promised blessing of a new tomorrow.

Finette

Jallim Eudovic with Governor General of St. Lucia H.E. Dame Pearlette Louisy

At the core of the exhibition is “Koudmen” (the title piece) — a three piece set that portrays our togetherness as humanity’s ultimate strength. Towering over the village are “Lespwis” spiritual figures reminding us that our purpose serves a higher power. I want to effect change within my community and spread the message to the global village. This exhibition has a voice — my voice. Being an artist for me is like being an evangelist, you go throughout the world sharing what’s in your heart with the wider community.

The Creole ..Folk Culture

Traditional Masquerade Arts in St. Lucia

T

raditionally, masquerade performances in St. Lucia were seasonal and main street performances. The art form occurred predominantly during the Christmas and New Year’s season. The exception was the appearance of masquerade groups at special events, like cock fights and soft ball cricket. In the main, masqueraders, usually small groups, were exclusively men who disguised themselves by wearing costumes, brightly colored women’s clothing and masks. Several different characters formed part of the masquerading group. These included Uncle Sam and Seraphina, Chuval Bwa, Papa Jab, Devils (Jab Jab), Ma Celi, Toes, Donkey(Mas Bouwik), Pay Banan, Mary Anset. Accompanied by musicians they travelled throughout the island, roaming the streets of the villages and capital, putting on performances. It was local street theatre, and a unique form at that. Historically, Masquerade served both social and economic roles. Socially, it served as a form of entertainment for performers as well as audiences. It seemed to have fostered

O

ver 90% of the 140,000 inhabitants of St. Lucia are of African descent. Despite the repressive historical situation – especially during the time of slavery, and even during the colonial rule after the period of Emancipation – during which most black St. Lucians had been forcefully deprived of their original ethnic identity and culture, African elements within the newly formed Creole folk culture are still dominant. This is clearly expressed in the structure of the Creole language, the St. Lucian patois; in a number of musical structures, drum rhythms, songs and dances; in religious concepts, beliefs and rituals; in the practice of traditional folk medicine; and in a number of other aspects of St. Lucian folk culture and life.

cooperation within and between communities. Performers, musicians and costume makers within the community all had an input in making performances successful. Masquerading as a form of entertainment during Christmas was important to the community. Says one person from Delaide, “Christmas was not Christmas without masquerade.” Onlookers teased the masqueraders. The masqueraders attempted to dance with the onlookers. While they were feared by many, they seemed to have kept the streets alive with entertainment. Economically, Masquerade was an income-generating activity for all persons involved. During the performances, street audiences would throw coins to the performers as an expression of appreciation and encouragement. The money collected was shared among all members of the performing groups.” [The following is excerpted from a UNESCO/ FRC report on a project to revitalize traditional masquerade performing arts.]

This Creole folk culture, which has been shaped and passed on to us by persons of predominantly African cultural background and orientation, which has best been described by Harold F. C. Simmons, who pioneered St. Lucian Folk research: “For various historical reasons, the West Indian folk tradition is an underground tradition. Its songs, dances, festivals, beliefs and customs manifest an unceasing attempt to create forms of expression for a way of life which is at variance with established authority, orthodox religion, upper class morality, law and other cultural forms having the sanction of authority. It has nevertheless consistently appropriated to its own use large fragments of the culture of the world above it. It has been under constant attack from the pulpit, the law makers, and its language is being pushed gradually out of existence by educational policy as well as by social factors not directly subject to control.” By Manfred Kremser From “The African heritage in the Kele tradition of the Djine in St.Lucia.” (1986)

H

arold Simmons is regarded by many as the father of the modern arts and culture movements in St. Lucia. He was born 2nd December 1914 and died 6th May 1966. He was tutor to a bright generation of St. Lucian artists including Derek Walcott, Dunstan St. Omer and the late Leo Spa St. Helene. Derek Walcott memorialized him in his classic work Another Life (1973). Msgr. Patrick Anthony PhD recognises Harold Simmons as the mentor and guiding spirit behind the conception and founding of the Folk Research Centre. Simmons was not only a fine painter, but in his relatively short life was archaeologist, anthropologist, newspaper columnist and editor of the Voice newspaper, folklorist and local historian. He was a founding member of the St. Lucia Archaeological and Historical Society. He was well known in the region and beyond, and many famous figures sought him out in his native St. Lucia. In 2005 he was named by the FRC, with Dame Sesenne Descartes (whose folk singing talents he had discovered), as a St. Lucian National Cultural Hero. A collection of his articles is being edited by Dr. Didacus Jules. Portrait is by Cedric George, St. Lucian painter.

We adore it, cherish it, and work our arses off for it because we ultimately want more of it (unless of course you’re some monk or hippie who has renounced all worldly pleasures). Despite our longing for it do we really understand

M

how the almighty dollar or Euro or Pound for that matter works? I would guess 99.9% of the people really have no clue of the mechanics of creation of Babylon. I can hardly wrap my head around the concept myself as it is very technical and complicated. Truth be told, if we drill down to the nitty gritty of it, you just may ask yourself if it is truly worth it.

oney and Banking are intimately related. Money in its various incarnations has existed ever since humans realised that barter (exchange of a product or service for a product or service with someone else) was an ineffective system of trade. Truth be told, modern economies would never materialise if we were to rely on barter. To barter you must first find an individual who has an item you want and who also wants an item you are willing to trade— technically known as double coincidence of wants. Then you must equate those items. Say we decide that a laptop is worth half a cow. I have a laptop I’m willing to trade. I find a farmer who wants a laptop and also has a cow he is willing to trade. I want a live cow for a milking operation. The situation becomes impractical as I have only one laptop to trade and I don’t want half a cow. There are other problems but these are the main ones.

Money solved the problems of barter (it introduced a myriad of other problems, but that’s another story). Believe it or not money is not just about the coins and Benjam....errr Elizabeths we have in our pockets; this is a small subset of money called currency. Money serves a few functions. First is to act as a medium of exchange; it must be widely accepted to fulfil this function. Example time! Imagine for a second a bunch of blokes in your community cordon off themselves and decide to rage against Babylon (let’s call it Occupy Em Boulevard) and change this evil corrupt system. They somehow convince the folk in the community to burn all those bills we currently use. They establish a wonderful new system of exchange using a five leaved plant as their currency. A cow costs 50 plants, a mango cost 1, etc. What happens if

11 Issue 4 Touché

one of the residents decides to purchase a car? There are no dealerships in the community and they must venture to an outside party. Although not impossible, based on car dealer’s leanings, it is highly improbable that a dealership would accept such payment. Even if the sales person really, really saw the value in the plant, he/she would obviously worry about paying for additional vehicles to resell. Would the Japanese manufacturer accept those plants? Would the Bank accept these plants for my house payment etc? Money must also measure value; it must be able to act as a common measure of value for items purchased and sold. So we know that a $1 item is essentially half the value of $2 item. We also know how much of x item to buy or sell. Thirdly, money also acts as a store of wealth. That means that a few weeks, months and years from now money must not materially differ in value from now. Although money loses its value over time due to inflation the degradation is usually gradual and manageable. Lastly, it must also act as a standard of deferred payment. That simply means it can be owned now and be used to make payment much later. Throughout history, many items have been used as money. Beads were in style for some time as well as stones, shells and precious metals. In prisons, cigarettes are the money of choice (so I’ve heard). With the recent economic crisis and bank bailouts it is apropos to briefly touch upon banking as well as it is intimately tied to money. The modern banking system is largely credited to European Goldsmiths. Back in the day, people used precious metals as money. Precious met-

als did a fairly good job in its heyday. They are durable, not overly common and took some effort to own and are fairly manageable physically. Not sure if you ever heard the story of Robin Hood but theft may have been quite common in those times. People wanted to protect their wealth and would store their gold with the goldsmiths. Those goldsmiths quickly realised that they sat on a shitload of idle gold as the owners rarely ever came to retrieve all at once. They lent these idle quantities of gold to folk in need, for a fee of course and made a tidy profit off it. They always kept a small reserve just in case the owners came in to retrieve some of their gold. They also gave to the folk who deposited with them receipts. These receipts could then be transferred to someone else as a means of payment for a good or service. That person in possession of the receipt would be entitled to receive the amount of gold specified in the receipt from the goldsmith. As you can see, this was an early form of cheque writing. Modern banks work in the exact same manner. Person X deposits their salary at Bank of Sent Loosha. As a reward for that deposit, the bank pays us a paltry interest rate of 1%. They turn around and lend our deposits to poor folks who wants to buy cars, refrigerators etc. at obscenely higher interest rates upwards of 10%, sometimes as high as 20%. That’s the beauty of the Banking system; use your own money to profit off you. If all of us decide to go to our banks now and withdraw all our money, we would have a serious crisis on our hands. Politicians would go crazy, banks would go bankrupt and this entire system would collapse. In the recent crisis many banks did go bankrupt as customers came to withdraw all their money. Yes people, we do have that much power. The

Cartridge World, the world’s fastest growing ink and toner refilling retailer, launched the first franchise in Saint Lucia on Wednesday August 3rd 2011. Located at Orange Park Commercial Centre, Bois D’Orange, Gros Islet.

I

nternational ink cartridge retailer offers a ‘Greener’ and more cost effective way to print in your Business and Home. For over 20 years, Cartridge World has been refilling and remanufacturing printer ink cartridges. Each one of their technicians starts with a rigorous 80-hour training course, teaching them about all the latest printer technology and processes to ensure accuracy and consistency. Cartridge World specializes in refilling ink or toner cartridges for all major brands, including: Brother, Canon, HP, Epson, Lexmark and Samsung. Cartridge World will refill and remanufacture inkjet and laser printer cartridges, using state-of-the art processes. These processes will not only help save money but provide an environmentally superior alternative to costly and wasteful new cartridges. “Ink and toner is a vital business resource and a significant expense and at Cartridge World we do more than just refill ink and toner cartridges; we send them through a quality checkpoint inspection and always use toner and inks specifically designed for each cartridge, which makes our product 100% total satisfaction, money back guaranteed” said Kamille

Huggins, Manager, Cartridge World (Saint Lucia) Ltd. “We provide our customers with the highest quality product possible, quality is our product. Using Cartridge World remanufactured products will not just allow you to save from 20% up to 40% on buying a new one, but it’s good for the planet too. Each recycled laser cartridge saves the environment the 100 years that it will take to decompose”. Cartridge World knows that implementing ‘green’ practices at times can be costly but they have developed programmes to make recycling printer cartridges easier for consumers and businesses. Customers simply swap out an empty original cartridge or purchase one already refilled and find a significant savings compared to buying new. Recycling bins will be stationed in the coming months at strategic locations island wide for the general Saint Lucian public to drop off their empty cartridges. “It’s not just about ink or toner, it’s about the businesses and people. We are nothing without our customers, so we put their needs first and pride ourselves on providing great customer service’ added Ms. Huggins. The new franchise in Saint Lucia will provide free pickup and delivery to all qualified business clients.

Edward Harris

THE IMPORTANCE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP! I am once again extremely grateful and delighted for the opportunity to engage my readers’ attention in the pages of 4th Edition of Touché Magazine. I am even more delighted to be writing on the subject of Entrepreneurship at this special time of year. It is my hope that 2011 was a very rewarding year for you based on the many lessons you have learnt. From my perspective this year has prepared me to deal with any future financial challenges as the global financial dilemma continues to be the number one priority for leaders of developed and developing countries to solve.

I

t is high time that the governments of the world in general and developing countries in particular give the respect to Entrepreneurship that it deserves. There must be a genuine partnership from now on between governments and the private sector. The situation in the world today, especially in the United States of America, cannot be made any clearer than the absolute truth, that JOBS are vital to the sustainability of any economy. The St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture continues to get involved with programmes that will attract young persons to seek out entrepreneurial opportunities. The Chamber initiated St. Lucia’s participation for the first time in the 2011 Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) which is in its 4th year, and launched Saint Lucia Youth Business Trust (SLYBT) as part of the week’s activities. GEW was held during the period November 14 – 20, 2011 and was hosted in 123 Countries, engaging more than 10 Million current and aspiring Entrepreneurs worldwide, 25,000 partner organizations played host to 40,000 events, activities and competitions. GEW presented an opportunity of global significance as it brought together young persons with an appetite for entrepreneurship, bearing in mind that every business starts with a conversation. The dialogue will continue long after the week of heightened activities. You can keep abreast of developments by visiting the following www.unleashingideas.org, www.unleashingactivities.org/country/lc St. Lucia Page, www.gew. org.uk to seek out new business opportunities that

are likely to be available on the sites and get ready to participate in GEW 2012 as it is an annual event. I like this quote very much as it emphasises the role of Entrepreneurship - “Every individual that we can guide, that we can help to start a new company, is vital to the future of our economic welfare”. Ewing Kauffman of the Kauffman Foundation, principal Sponsors of Global Entrepreneurship Week. The importance of Entrepreneurship cannot be over emphasized and going forward into the year 2012, one of the most important challenges of the new government will be to reverse the decline in St. Lucia’s attractiveness as a destination which means business. “St. Lucia Open for Business” must have deeper meaning than just words. The first step will be to address the issues that caused St. Lucia to move from a ranking of 27 to 53 among 183 countries surveyed by experts who produce the Ease of Doing Business – World Bank Report. Foreign Direct Investment is vital to Job Creation. I am very satisfied with my contribution to the development of Entrepreneurship in St. Lucia over the years and especially at this time of my life when I seek to leave a legacy. I have not done everything right but I have done enough to demonstrate to young and old alike that Entrepreneurship is a viable option when considering a path that can provide growth opportunities for the nation. Remember always that the Private Sector is the Engine of Growth and the Micro Small and Medium Enterprise Sector is the Engine of Employment. Regardless of whether your passion leads you to a profession or entrepreneurship remember always that SELLING is the necessary ingredient for

In December, 2010 Syreeta (Touché`) Alcee and I hosted a Book and Gift show at the City Hall. In continuing my collaboration with Touché, I am hoping that she will consent to host a 3 day Workshop on Salesmanship. When last did you hear about a training opportunity in Salesmanship which is one of the most important life skills? This is what Mike Litman – the gentleman who travelled extensively and met with Millionaires and Billionaires had to say about what he discovered – The Insiders’ Secret. He claimed that the proof lies in the fact that “3% of the world own 97% of the wealth” which overwhelmingly proves the following points: - 1. That ordinary people are blind to the secret of Selling and how leaders use words to create empire. 2. That you can turn your words into multiple sources of income and make millions. 3. People are miserable and desperate trying to find part or full time businesses of their own. “If you don’t know how to sell you never stop living from pay check to pay check hell.” To them it is a four letter word FEAR. Poor and middle class are always in a state of financial chaos because they are afraid of selling. Learn the art of selling and life will never be the same again. Sales professionals negotiate on their own terms. Everyone needs to be a Salesperson because over the period of life on earth, it will be a constant battle of convincing other persons to accept your point of view. As the new year begins, I am pleased to present my readers with a gift of one of my books – “You can be a Successful Business Person” You can request your gift at caribbiz@gmail.com I wish my readers everywhere – that they all will Prosper and be in Health throughout the Holiday Season and the New Year! God bless you all!

So what next?

T

he academic year has ended. Graduates are now FORCED to become adults. You endured years of schooling hoping that you will become employable. Your parents’ financial burden should be reduced because of your income-generating potential. Remember when you first started university and your parents helped you move into your new apartment? I’m sure they shed some tears. Well, here’s news - many of those tears weren’t because their bundle of joy was moving away from home. Sending a child off to university is NOT CHEAP! The trip to Disney Land and renovations to the house had to be sacrificed so you can secure a successful future. Now you’re finished, and expectations are high. You went to all your lectures (let’s hope so), you’ve worked hard and now you need to make some major decisions. Oh yeah, you need to find a JOB! Over the next phase of your life, you will be considered a regular working Boyo, earning a salary, paying taxes, and attending staff meetings. So, do you really want to be the person who still shares the room with the little brother at age 30? I should think not!

So, here’s the deal Live like a poor university student for a while: are you unable to get a full time job initially? Stick with the part- time job that you had while at University. Take the night shift at the factories, this will double your earnings. If you decide to live on your own, get a room-

15 Issue 4 Touché

mate to help with the bills. Who needs a new car? Keep the ole Toyota. It still gets you around and you will save lots of money. Remember, you have that student loan to pay off!

Credit is NOT free money: if you had a credit card in University, you may be entitled to a higher credit limit now that you are employed. You’ll understandably need to buy things; you can’t exactly go into the office with a vest and a pair of jeans with the gaping hole by the knee! However, you are not expected to go in with Armani suits and Samsonite briefcases. Credit cards should only be used to purchase absolutely essential items. The interest charges are overwhelming and you should try to cut costs wherever possible to avoid any substantial accumulation of these charges. One option is to use your credit card to make your purchases. At the end of the month, use your salary, which you leave in an interest-bearing account for the month, to pay off your full balance. This way, you receive interest on your earnings. The secret is to spend less than you earn – then invest your savings wisely.

Don’t be afraid to say ‘no’: don’t be tempted to buy stuff like cars, DVD’s, stereos, and similar items known as ‘depreciating assets’. This category of items loses value over time. You should try to spend as little as possible on them, because pretty soon, they would not be worth much. It would also prevent your debt from accumulating. Use your youth to your advantage while you still can: agility may be your strong point, but that is not all that your youth affords you. When a person starts to save at a young age, the savings accumulate like you would not believe thanks to the magic of compounding.

A 25-year-old investing $200 each month for just 10 years will have $402,797 by retirement age, 8% annual return. If a 35-year-old were to invest $200 each month until age 65 -- that’s two decades longer than the 25-year-old in the next cubicle -- she ends up with a little more than $300,000. Impressive figures huh? Also, a young person who starts a life insurance or a pension fund will pay a smaller premium than an older person – another benefit of youth!

Okay, so what have we learnt thus far? The key to your financial success is to formulate a budget, yes that awful B-word! It may seem kind of geeky, but it will help you to prioritize your needs. Here’s what you have to do:

* The first thing to do is to list all of your income;

* Next you have to compare your earnings with your expenditure. This will give you a clear picture of your financial status; * Finally, prioritize your needs to effectively manage your finances. If you disregard the fact that your financial future depends on you and the decisions that you make now, you may end up in excessive debt, which can affect your ability to access credit in the future. So, make the right choices; then you can enjoy life (at least in the long run) and your parents can finally take that trip to Disney Land that they always wanted - confident that they have done their job well!

Marriage DON’Ts

10 Never call your spouse stupid. This makes them feel insecure about themselves and they may exert this feeling in other situations. Remember, they love you and what you think of them matters most. 9 Beware of calling them weak. Again, what you feel really matters. Though they may not act like it in the midst of an argument- it really does. Instead, point out sokme of their strenths. Instead you my try saying, “I know you’re trying, but I’d like to see…” 8 Throughout the course of the marriage, people are going to have their opinions of your spouse whether it be good or bad. However, never agree with a negative comment made by someone else about your spouse. For example, never say things like, “My mother was right about you, you are…” whatever the comment may have been. This only feeds the rage and make your spouse feel like you think the same thing. 7 NEVER, NEVER for any reason compare them to your ex. This may raise some speculation that spouse have been unfaithful or is not over their ex. This may also make spouse feel insecure about themselves and may feel as though they have to compete for your attention. One should not have to compete in a marriage when they have already won. Afterall, you are wearing the championship ring! 6 Never tell your spouse “I HATE YOU.” This evokes a lot of anger and may raise questions of

if you really do. After all, you did vow to LOVE, honor and respect. Avoid saying these three words. 5 It’s one thing to compare them to your ex, suspicions that you still have feeling for your ex. It will also make your sppouse feel as if you think that the marriage is a mistake. 4 Never tell them that you think the marriage is a mistake. Again, this may raise suspicions about your fidelity. It may also make spouse feel insecure about self and may force them to rethink your marital situation. 3 Never verbally think and or say: Why did I get married? By questioning your reasons for marrying your spouse will make them feel as if you are thinking of moving on. Be careful here, if they think so, they may try and beat you to the punch and move on first. Besides, you should already have the answer to this question (why did I get married?) since the day you said, “I do.”

1 Avoid at all costs saying I WANT A DIVORCE! Don’t even make the suggestion. Don’t even say “maybe we should…” Afterall, you made a vow to love your spouse for better and worst. Too often, people enjoy the good times, but can’t seem to get through the bad.

LifeStyle

TOP 10

Remember, marriage is serious! It is not something to play with. It is not a house where you can come and go as you please. We all have shouted angry things at one another but be careful because the more hurtful the words, the harder it is to get over them. More importantly go into the marriage prepared for its ups and downs. Too often people think that there is an expiration date on getting married – there isn’t one. Therefore, take your time choosing a spouse. Once you are in the marriage be in it to win it. Be a team player- if one person is hurt, the entire team suffers.

2 Avoid saying, I wish I never married you. Though this is very straightforward. It is very painful. It may make your spouse think that you have or had someone else in mind.

N

o relationship is perfect. There are times that our spouses really get the best of us. However, there are things that should never be said to one another. While many rushed to see the blockbuster premier, “Why did I get Married Too,” most literally ask themselves the same question. Most answers include love, security and fear of being alone. However, tempers flare sporadically in between the happily ever after. While anger gets the best of us there are things we should never say to our spouses.

A

lot of people, at least once each decade after turning twenty, takes the time to reflect and take stock of their lives. Most of those people will discover that while they are generally happy with their lives, there are always some things that they find regretable. Could some of these regrets be caused by simple excuses? Excuses such as not getting fit because of not having time, not owning a business because of being afraid to fail, not asking someone out because they are out of their league, and others.

19 Issue 4 Touché

There are plenty of more excuses that we can come up with that will keep us from doing what we need to do. There are also ways to combat these excuses, even while they’re still in your head, before they actually start to negatively affect your life.

#1 Being Afraid You know those tell tale feelings. Stomach in knots, heart racing, palms getting sweaty, voice shaking, those are all symptoms of fear, or panic. They usually appear right before you have to give a speech in front of a crowd, or before you face something when you don’t know what the out come will be. It has been said that fear is simply False Evidence Appearing Real, and Franklin D Roosevelt said “the only thing you have to fear is fear itself”. So what does all this mean in layman’s terms? Basically it means that all you have to be afraid of is being afraid to try, or not doing something because you were too afraid to.

So go ahead give that speech, no one has ever died of stage fright, and the people aren’t going to throw things, laugh at, or walk out on you. And even if they did, what would it hurt? You will be the better person for facing a hard situation head on, and doing what needed to be done anyway.

#2 Having No Time Another of the biggest excuses that is usually used for anything that hasn’t been done yet, is time. No time to work out, no time to start that new business that we always wanted to, no time to play with the kids, no time to watch that movie with your sweetie, no time at all. But is that actually true? Let’s break this down. There are twenty four hours in a day; out of that we spend eight to nine hours sleeping, which leaves us with about fifteen hours. Figure in eight to ten hours for working, and that still leaves us with about five hours. How you spend those hours is up to you. Some people may want to spend some time with the family, some may want to use those hours to work out, or spend time in prayer, or work on that business. Whatever you decide to do with them, can you honestly keep telling yourself that you have no time?

#3 Not Being Good Enough Still another excuse that is often used is the expression that we are not good enough to do certain things. We aren’t convinced that we are good enough to write that book, design that office, prepare that report, or fill in the blank. But how do we know unless we actually try? If we do take the time to do something new, most people will not criticize and tear you down for it. They will actually applaud you for trying something new, and encourage you to keep doing so. So next time you think, that you’re not good enough, fight that feeling and do it anyway.

#4 Not Following Through

LEARNING ABOUT NATURE

Besides the other excuses that we have already looked at, another popular excuse we use, is the question, “why should I start this, I’ve never finished anything before?” But wouldn’t the better question be “why haven’t you seen things through?” Is it because you fell back on one of the previous excuses? Or perhaps you gave up too soon, before you had a chance to see any results. Sometimes we bite off more than we can chew, or are trying to do too much at one time. Some things can only be done if they are taken a little bit at a time. You might not be able to organize your office in a day, so why not start with a drawer or file? Breaking that big project into manageable pieces will prove that you are able to finish things after all. You just have to believe in yourself, and don’t stress out or give up if you can’t do everything at once. As James Crawford, a motivational health and business speaker once asked, “How do you eat a watermelon?” The answer, “one slice at a time.” The next time you start to use any of these excuses, think about what you’re saying to, and about yourself. Are you really saying you have no time, or that you don’t want to do something? Do you believe that you won’t follow through, or are you afraid that you will fail in the middle of the project? Be honest with yourself and others. If you don’t want to do something, say no. If you are afraid, do it anyway. If you think you have no time, turn off the TV, Facebook, and Twitter, and get-it-done. If you don’t think you are good enough, take the time to do your best on it anyway. If you don’t think you’ll follow through, plow through, and persevere on one small project. Stop letting these four excuses stop you from doing what you need to do.

What you should know about

et us begin with the secret law of attraction. Would you like to know what it is? Sure you would. That is the reason you are reading this right now. The secret law of attraction is nothing but common sense. However, most people do not seem to have the common sense to understand what it is. Once again, that is the reason why you are reading this article right now. So here it goes. Enjoy the ride. Keep reading my beautiful article and I will reveal to you the secrets to the life you truly want but have no idea how to live. You see my dear reader, all things in life are really an exchange of benefits. From the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep you constantly find yourself giving something to get something in return. Most people think that we as people will attract to ourselves that which is similar to us. However, that is the wrong point of view. In reality, we will attract that and those to ourselves which can benefit from us in some way. The Benefits Exchange

who was able to offer them the most value for their money. The best possible fit. Do you understand how the law of attraction works now? Just in case you have doubts, let me explain it further. How to use the law of attraction to get what you want in life?

The secret to having your needs met in life and becoming a person who is valued. How will you do that? The key to being valued is not endless self improvement. The key is finding the party which will find your services vital to their very existence. The more you are needed, the more you will be valued. Just think about this for a minute. A nurse is way more valuable in today’s market than an Administrative Assistant. What is the reason for that? The reason is that the Nurse provides a more Now let me give you some examples of necessary service. Therefore, the Nurse is more valued. You need to sell your sermanager thought you might be able to help them out? I think that is exactly the vices to those people and companies reason why you were invited. Now, think which will value them most. To value something means to take care of it. You about the interview process. All things will be taken cared of if and only if you happen for a reason, right? Can we keep the Romantic, Euphoric “High” or Spark forever; is it even possible?

N

either natural or synthetic Chemical highs last forever, but like common drug addiction, a kind of natural tolerance develops, and the epidemic of short-lived romantic passionate love affairs today that many times end after a couple months, a year or two, are associated with the natural leveling of brain chemicals. When the intoxicating chemicals begin to level out, this is often spelling the end of the delirious passions that are being understood so greatly today as a loss of Love. There are 2 general responses that can occur as a result of these neuro-chemical changes: 1. Some people continue to move from relationship to relationship to seek out this high. 2. Some go on into the next mature level or kind of Compassionate Love, which forces you to continue in one relationship. If you can maintain your perception that you feel the same affection and regardless of any event or condition which may alter your decision to change the way you feel about your partner, it is possible to keep the fire burning for a very long time.

These vibrant youngsters were excited at an opportunity to be able to talk about the movie. You’d think that after going over scripts, extras and takes for hours on end they’d be bored of the concept. But for them all the movie meant something much more than a job. For all of them, it was the first experience at being part of a movie. Some had never acted or worked in the creative industry. However it seemed that they all had a common interest- involvement in something positive. In the interview each person talked about their character and their roles in the movie. heartwarming adventure into the lives of the individuals as many of them were able to align their own personal lives with the characters assigned to them. The resolution in the movie as a result was a comfort to many of them. Not only being able to explore their inner beings as a result of this production, the actors were also able to develop a bond among each other. They made mention that with groups, you find cliques, but this was very rare in the production because everyone was close to everyone. The solidarity too, is what kept them going on days when production wasn’t as exciting as others. Look out for “A Beautiful Exchange”, with universal issues, addressed through a heartwarming story of a father and daughter with a local messageall wrapped up professional style.

CROWNED CARNIVAL QUEEN BACK IN 2005, YOU’D THINK HER NAME WOULD BE PACKED AWAY IN SAINT LUCIAN HISTORY BUT JOYANN BISCETTE IS ANYTHING BUT OLD NEWS. IN FACT WITH EVERY PASSING YEAR SINCE HER CROWNING, SHE HAS AMAZED FANS AND CRITICS ALIKE BY KEEPING ROYALLY ACTIVE AND DOING A GOOD JOB OF IT TOO! QUEEN JOYANN, FOR THE PAST SIX YEARS HAS REPRESENTED SAINT LUCIA ON THE REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SCALE.

Joyann Tell’s Touché n 2006, she participated in the regional Miss Carnival pageant, in 2007, London Elite, in 2008, Miss World in South Africa, in 2010, Miss Jamzone International in Guyana and reaching the peak of her pageantry career in 2011, competing for Miss Universe in Brazil. Her ability to have competed every year excluding 2009 is phenomenal considering the demands of the industry.

Joyann takes a break from her busy schedule

For the average individual, such assignments would have been painstaking [despite the perks], and they probably would not have participated in all. However, Joyann came into the game with much preparation and a distinct advantage. One could imagine a spritely and engaging personality, as all she wanted to be in her youthful days was a flight attendant. No stranger to the concept of showmanship, Joyann has been a performer since she was wee small. At the age of five she started playing mass, played steel-pan with the Allegro Group, sang calypso on an interschool level, and later in the Ambassador’s Tent with the stage name, “Tiny”. She said she had done everything surrounding carnival with the exception of the carnival queen pageant. She decided to participate and her success came as a surprise to only her, as everyone else expected it based on her experience and night’s performance. This involvement from a tender age and throughout her years gave her a renewed freshness at every opportunity and helped brace her for her subsequent achievements. Amid her success, Joyann has managed self-reflection as few are able to do so in the limelight. She has personally recognized her strengths and weaknesses in an effort to develop herself in the industry. However, according to the Queen, pageantry has enabled her to be more audacious and expressive than ever before. Despite all the additions [many may call maturation], she is still the pretty Lucian girl next door who enjoys her river limes, house parties, zip-lining and the ever cherished vacations. Pageantry was not the arrival to her overall success. She continued to learn and develop during those projects much like her early days of carnival activities. There are definitely bigger and better prospects for this queen. She has proven that she can come time after time as fresh as the morning paper. Queen Joyann has achieved much, and based on such, is expected to achieve more. So we wait with bated breath for her new ventures.

orn June 15, 1990 as Saveion Cherick Georges, the twenty-one year old since summer of 2011 has been celebrated as both a genius songwriter and incredible vocal artiste with international appeal. Saveion Georges, with his younger brother Gylan Georges, was raised in a single parent household by Janice Georges in the city Castries, St.Lucia. Though raised aptly by his mother, Saveion and his father Rufus Moncherry have always maintained an affable relationship. “Blue” debuted with “Caribbean Girls”, a lady’s anthem (particularly the likes of those with Caribbean heritage) which spiraled over social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. The feedback for this first release was immense and intensely supportive of the artiste. After receiving video responses of various dance solos the new young artiste would advance toward doing a music video as further support to the club hit. The hit song was produced by Johann “Yogi” Deterville of Studio 9 who is the executive producer for the mixtape “Blue” is currently working on, an album called “The Re-Invention”.

Saveion’s deeper exploration of music was probed by not only family, but inspiration taken from other young artistes with a musical impact, not only in St. Lucia but abroad. Now achieving considerably the same acknowledgement than those who inspired him, “Blue” uses his home island and the people’s support as motivation to continue seeking out a career in music as a singer and writer. Georges pledges that his music career may very well be a marketing instrument for St. Lucia and works toward improving the country’s recognition in the entertainment world.

Saveion Georges’ interest in music and songwriting began in his early teenage years - his skills and style maturing just as he, throughout his time is high school and college. At Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School (high ranking in the island’s academia), Georges was reputable for his superior level of sportsmanship and earning the title of Victor Ludorum for his graduating year. Hence, Blue’s gravitation toward a musical career only came as a pleasant surprise to most but nevertheless was well received and supported.

Semi (born Werner Francis), wrote five of

the album’s songs and collaborated on four of the others, while the entire album shares a message of truth and light: that the Creator and creation are one. Becoming familiar with your inner self provides the foundation for where we are now and where we are going. It’s at this location in time and space where the genre of “Inspirational Reggae” is born. Semi is a visionary as well and believes that through participation we can transform obstacles to fulfilling our collective destiny. In St. Lucia for example, a survey found that 90 per-

cent of prison inmates had no relationship with their fathers. Semi is a member of the 10,000 Man March Committee that tries to raise the sensitivity of men to get more involved in their children’s lives recognizing that “without dreams you perish; so there must be something you’re fighting for.” Semi, who is no newcomer to reggae music, was discovered at the age of 23, along with his band, Summit (originally based on a cruise ship) when they were produced by Bob Lamb (producer of the first two albums for UB40). The single produced was titled “Yummy Yummy” which led to the group being signed to RCA Records in 1996. Semi has two prior solo albums, Collections 1 & 2 including the chart-topper tune “Put Yourself in My Place.” More recently, the track, “Love is the Key” off the latest album, Conscious Paradise was performed by students during St. Lucia’s Independence National Youth Rally this February (2011). http://www.facebook.com/semismusic

ow did you start Modeling?

At an early age of five years, my mother would always take photos of me and after which I developed a relationship with the camera. I grew up modeling and doing pageants as well at my primary school, always placing in the top three. In my more mature years, I joined the C-definition Modeling Agency to strengthen my knowledge on modeling which gave me the opportunity to take part in shows at Scandals and also the yearly Street Fashion Show during the month of November. Later, I decided to take a break to pursue academic qualifications. Before long, I decided to go back. I participated in shows with true appeal as well as doing freelancing modeling which helped push myself out there tremendously.

What does it take to be a pro Model?

I took an enormous step in creating my model portfolio which was done by Daniel Marcion. I now hold a strong portfolio I can carry with me when I have gigs to present to clients. Being on time for gigs, knowing what kind of model you are whether it is commercial, print or runway.

------------ The Ease of Caring ------------

What is your life like outside Modeling?

Apart from modeling, I enjoy hanging out with family and friends, learning new languages, reading magazines to get new tips and most of all partying to get away from it all. Dancing and singing are some of the other things that keep me in tune with myself. I possess a fervent passion for life and there is a maturity about myself which makes me unique at the age of nineteen years old. I believe it’s my bewitching charm and delightful sense of humor.

What do you vision futuristically?

I don’t plan on having this as a career but plan on having it on a side just in case I am needed to do photo shoots or runway shows. I intend on someday furthering my education in hospitality management. One of my biggest achievements thus far has been Ford Models in the United States. I’m hoping with this step that my modeling will launch off internationally.

Cut back on table salt!

39 Issue 4 Touché

Went Caribbean is keenly focused on reducing the high incidence of chronic, non-communicable diseases by offering a variety of products and services which promote a healthy lifestyle. “I am all for maintaining the diverse culinary traditions of the Caribbean, but let’s make sure we do so without compromising good health,” Went asserted,

In addition to avoiding excessive quantities of salt present in today’s over-consumed processed foods, he also urged drinking pure water, checking blood pressure, daily exercise and other dietary habits - as recommended by medical doctors and qualified nutritionists - which were key to a healthier Caribbean and an economically sustainable

health care system. Went Caribbean, supported by the Barbados Entrepreneurs Venture Capital Fund (known as BIM Ventures), promotes its WentWorx line of all natural, aromatic seasoning blends which contain no salt, no sugar, no MSG and no artificial preservatives. “You can definitely reduce the salt in your meals without sacrificing authentic Caribbean flavour when you use WentWorx blends,” he emphasized. WentWorx products currently contain naturally occurring sodium in health sustaining proportions. For further information visit: Went Caribbean on Facebook

Frank Girard/Ministry of Agriculture

That’s the message from a Barbadian chef and entrepreneur who wants Caribbean people to abstain from over-consuming salty foods following reports of tragic life-altering strokes and other serious medical conditions.

hef Derek Went of Went Caribbean, a company which offers healthy Caribbean lifestyle support, said while the Caribbean region is known worldwide for its culinary exploits and some of the most flavourfilled foods, the region was playing “Russian Roulette” with its food preparation and consumption habits.

proposing a switch from table salt to moderate amounts of sea salt as a healthier alternative. The Caribbean chef promotes sodium-free, healthy spices and herbs in Barbados, across the Caribbean, and soon to the Caribbean Diaspora communities in North America.
