Inspires Hope, Healing and Well-Being
Mission Touchstone Mental Health inspires Hope, Healing and Well-Being.
Vision Touchstone Mental Health is an organization of excellence creating innovative, personcentered care with individuals whose lives are affected by mental illness. We transform how services for mental, physical and social health intersect to achieve optimal wellness.
Touchstone staff recently held our Annual Meeting in which all staff come together annually to break bread, share achievements from the previous year, and plan for the future. While preparing my speech for our "Past. Present. Future." theme, one word that kept emerging was 'compassion' and how important this is for Touchstone. Compassion not just for those we serve, but for those we work with side-by-side. A founding principle in our beginning and for the present, our future is also about compassion, as this is one of the driving forces that keeps us grounded and connected to those we serve. So as we look towards creating our future, compassion will continue to be one of our core characteristics, ensuring those we serve deserve no less. Wishing you wellness, Martha Lantz Executive Director

Rising Cedar Gardening Recently our Rising Cedar residents had the opportunity to plant their first garden as a collective community. Residents utilized a section in the Healing Garden to plant sunflowers, pansies, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, peppers, jalapeños, and onions. We can't wait to see how it grows throughout the summer!
New Mental Health Workforce Initiative Recently Touchstone applied for a Minnesota HealthForce grant focused on development of new programming to better serve older adults with mental illness. Touchstone Mental Health, together with Care Providers of Minnesota and Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC), proposed a partnership to collaboratively develop and implement core evidence-based training and curriculum for health care staff and clinical nursing students. The project was found to be "compelling, innovative, and worthwhile" by the review committee, and so the project was awarded funding! The project will impact individuals at the local and state level to expand and strengthen the mental health workforce and care of seniors with mental health challenges. All Touchstone staff will have the opportunity to be trained by the project trainers, and impact our direct practice work as well. Current statistics indicate the number of Minnesotans over the age of 60 will double between the years 2005 - 2030, so time is of the essence in order to best meet growing needs.

Touchstone's Annual Meeting Touchstone staff had the opportunity to meet as a group for our annual meeting on May 21, 2014. Staff had an enjoyable time sharing activities, goals and progress achieved during the 2013 calendar year. Since this doesn't happen very often staff enjoyed spending time together as a group and learning about other programs' activities. © Photo by Priya Saihgal
Touchstone's Featured Program Targeted Case Management Touchstone's Targeted Case Management program provides resources for adults to maintain and increase independence, minimize the risk of hospitalization, and improve overall functioning and well-being. We currently provide 206 clients with case management services. These services may include support creating a treatment plan to identify individual goals and develop strategies for goal achievement; assistance connecting with service providers, community resources, and housing resources; support with increasing health and wellness using an integrated approach; advocacy with landlords, service providers, roommates and family members, and much more. Within the last year the Targeted Case Management program has almost doubled in size! This exciting opportunity to expand the number of clients our program can serve has allowed us to increase our capacity from 120 to 236 clients. We expect to be at full capacity by the end of calendar year 2014. This expansion is in response to a high demand in Hennepin County from individuals needing this type of service but face long waiting lists. We recently received feedback from one of our clients who stated she is, "Grateful for having a safe place with someone who can help me have a happy life". We are grateful for this opportunity to provide services to members of our community who need them, and look forward to what the rest of 2014 brings. Click here to learn more about Touchstone's

Wellness Spotlight Preventing Heat-Related Illness The arrival of summer and warm temperatures increases the chances of heat-related illnesses. Heat-related deaths account for an average of 618 deaths each year. 1 Individuals with a mental illness, infants and young children, people age 65 and older, and those with physical illness are at greater risk of suffering a heat-related illness. Prevention is the best defense. Below are heat-related prevention tips2 : Take a cool shower or bath to cool off. Don't drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar as these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Avoid very cold drinks as they may cause stomach cramps when the temperature is very high. Rest often in shady, covered areas. Wear light weight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Drink more liquids (non-alcoholic) regardless of your activity level. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink. Warning: If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask him how much you should drink while the weather is hot. Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle. Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
