Today, October 10th, marks World Mental Health Day. The Day provides an opportunity for all individuals to talk about mental health and what needs to be done to make excellent mental health care a reality for people worldwide. The concept of individuals around the globe coming together for one entire day, 24 hours, speaks to the importance of mental health. It is also a testament to how the stigma of mental health is being addressed on a global level, which means our years of work towards overall wellness and mental health for all individuals are coming to fruition. Please join me, and others around the world, as we observe World Mental Health Day. Wishing you wellness, Martha Lantz Executive Director

Wellness Spotlight Mental Illness Awareness Week, World Mental Health Day Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. During Mental Illness Awareness Week, October 5 - 11, we join the voices to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care. This year's theme is "Living with schizophrenia". Schizophrenia affects 26 million people across the world and despite being a treatable disorder, more than 50% of people with schizophrenia cannot access adequate

HealthForce Minnesota Grant Touchstone was awarded a HealthForce Minnesota grant to support the development of curriculum and training for underserved older adults with mental illness, in an effort to strengthen and expand the mental health workforce in Minnesota. A total of 10 Touchstone employees learned the health, financial and social issues that seniors face by attending a three day intensive review before taking a final exam to ultimately become a Certified Senior Advisor, CSA. The course review took place outside of Chicago, Illinois. The project includes creating training for all Touchstone staff, developing a webinar training for the 800+ agency membership of Care Providers of Minnesota, and working with Minnesota Community and Technical College (MCTC) to impact the Master's Nursing curriculum for students entering the workforce. Four CSA-certified Touchstone employees presented "Understanding Mental Health from a Holistic Perspective" at the Care Providers Senior Housing Summit on August 20. Topics included mental illness in the senior population and holistic interventions. It became clear during and postpresentation that health care providers are hungry for this information. The

committee will present again in November at the 66th Annual Care Providers Convention and Exposition in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Touchstone's Featured Program Intentional Communities Touchstone's Intentional Communities program provides two peer-guided and managed communities of individuals who come together as a supportive group to collaboratively create a lifestyle using shared

values. Touchstone staff provides rehabilitative services to assist with developing and enhancing independent living skills, mental health stability, social competencies and achieving personal goals.

Upon becoming a member of the intentional communities, one becomes a member of a group of supportive peers, and also has regular staff support in his or her home on an ongoing basis. One member joined the Intentional Communities three years ago. In that time she has transitioned to independent living and become a natural leader at group meetings. She has become our resident volunteer at the community where she maintains a welcoming group space for members to meet. This member has made attending group meetings a high priority and has said that having time to connect and share with others in similar situations has helped. Click here for more information and updates about Touchstone's Intentional Communities program.
