As we finalized our audit and officially closed calendar year 2013, we are reminded of the tremendous successes and growth Touchstone experienced last year. We opened a brand new, state-of-the-art healing environment with the completion of our Rising Cedar building. Years of researching neuroscience and healing design have come together to create an optimal healing environment and home for individuals with mental illness, who rarely get to experience these types of elements in their lives. New programs arrived along with the new building, creating a home and services for 40 individuals with serious mental illness and other health conditions in the Rising Cedar Apartments, and providing holistic health and wellness services to individuals in the Community Health and Wellness Center. We also opened a new Home and Community Based Services program which provides long-term stable housing and focuses on promoting independence, community integration and successfully transitioning individuals into independent community living for 16 adults living in the Northwest suburbs. All of this wouldn’t be possible without our devoted and exceptional staff who help us succeed and achieve new heights in the healthcare arena. Each staff member is dedicated, passionate, and brings hope and healing to our clients everyday. Please join me in celebrating the year 2013, where skills, abilities, partnerships and staff continue to take us forward into 2014 and beyond, where the possibilities and heights are endless. Wishing you wellness,
Martha Lantz, LICSW, MBA Executive Director

Touchstone promotes many forms of healing for individuals experiencing a mental illness, as no single style works for everyone. James* is 56 years old, has an Art degree from Macalester college, lives with Bipolar disorder and has been a Touchstone client for five years. It’s no surprise, then, that James uses art as a way to heal from his mental illness. After James started working with Dr. Turnquist, one of Touchstone’s psychiatrists, his need for medication reduced significantly. This allowed him to unlock and feel emotions he had not been able to experience. James uses his creative talents to reveal the emotions he experiences, and through creative expressions has re-introduced art into his life, now again practicing one of his favorite hobbies. James has generously shared one of his creations with us, titled Flow of Water. *This symbol denotes a change in Touchstone client’s name in order to protect client privacy and identity rights.

Rising Cedar ApartmentsCelebrates One Year June 24, 2013, was a day to remember. Our vision, hard work and passion came to fruition when Rising Cedar Apartments opened its’ doors to 40 residents who were among more than 250 program referrals. In four short months, the apartments were filled with residents from various settings including 18% from the state hospital, 18% from intensive treatment, 15% from adult foster care, 15% from nursing home and assisted living settings, 18% from homeless shelters and 16% with housing in jeopardy. The reduced cost of care in Rising Cedar Apartments versus prior placements has amounted to $2.3 million in Minnesota state savings in its first year of operation. Each resident has one or more mental health diagnoses, 68% have multiple chronic health conditions and 25% have a substance use disorder. Our nursing and counseling staff time is used to support comprehensive and collaborative care which includes an interprofessional team of case managers, family members, interns, and community health providers. In the near future we are able to offer on-site physician services to interested residents. Eighty percent of residents have not had further hospitalizations and 100% of residents are making progress on recovery goals since moving into Rising Cedar Apartments. This is remarkable since most had several hospitalizations in the six months prior to moving in. Residents have participated in 3,450 community and socialization activities including resident dinners, healing garden activities, game nights, evidence-based practice groups, and more. Seventy-eight percent of residents have enrolled in the Community Health and Wellness Center, and just last month 149 services were utilized.
Thank you for being an integral part of Touchstone Mental Health’s Rising Cedar project.
Shiatsu Massage
PROGRAMS
“Shiatsu massage is integral to my healing and well being. I’ve experienced a deep and gentle release of stress tension I would not have otherwise. Afterward, I feel a sense of balance, being grounded, good energy and wholeness of mind, body and spirit. Touchstone Wellness Center is a small sanctuary for me. Thank you.” – Julia*

Julia, a Touchstone Health and Wellness Center client, describes in her own words how Shiatsu Massage has helped optimize her wellness. Shiatsu is a form of therapeutic bodywork that enhances the flow of qi (vital energy) along the meridian pathways of the body, utilizing finger and hand pressure techniques on specific points and energy channels. A Shiatsu session balances energy from head to toe, helping the body return to a state of health by restoring and harmonizing the circulation of qi.
