MARK TWAIN TONIGHT!

Hal Holbrook in MARK TWAIN TONIGHT! is a one-man show centered on the words of the prolific author. But the story behind the performance is perhaps better told with numbers. Holbrook has performed the role for 60 years, in all 50 states and 20 countries. The actor, who turns 90 in 2015, has a Tony, four Emmy Awards from ten nominations and one Oscar nomination. He still takes the stage as Twain approximately 20 times a year, as he has thousands of times before.

THEATRE

After all the years, all the hours on stage, how can Holbrook possibly keep the show fresh? “Holbrook keeps a record of every performance he's given, taking copious notes after the show on what material he performed… Whenever Holbrook does a return engagement at a theatre, he rarely repeats any of the material,” reports the LA Times in an article about the 2014 premiere of Holbrook/Twain: An American Odyssey, a documentary about the actor and his career-defining role. Prior to his last engagement in St. Louis, a sold-out performance at the Touhill, Dennis Brown of the Riverfront Times wrote that “Holbrook's uncanny portrayal of the celebrated humorist, is that rare theatre gift that keeps on giving.” “See him now,” implores Brown, “for we shall not see his like again.”

In a hilarious tour de force, Lithgow performs with zany abandon, portraying ten distinct, outrageous characters (including a parrot). By contrast, "Haircut" is a darkly comic look at Midwestern American implacability. Maybe on the surface it seems a little strange to pair dynamic, athletic dancers with… a barbershop quartet. But these are four award-winning singers, comprised of University of Missouri–St. Louis students and recent alumni. And just off their gold medal wins at the recent Barbershop in Germany competition, they are getting offers from around the country to perform. The singers see these concert dates as an excellent way to help them reach their goal of bringing barbershop music to a new generation. And that’s just one way they align so beautifully with MADCO, also determined to educate and inspire the next generation of artists in their field. Call it perfect harmony.

Composed of 12 young, talented dancers, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet presents a lively program enjoyable for all audiences. With its sophisticated repertoire and broad appeal, combined with a blend of entertaining and engrossing contemporary dance, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet is one of the great success stories in American dance today.

Compagnie Käfig is the brainchild of Mourad Merzouki, a native of Lyon, France, who studied martial arts and circus arts as a child and was influenced by hip-hop as a teen. Since 1996, the company has expanded the language of hip-hop by cleverly introducing a wide range of influences, ranging from Bollywood, Russian dance and contemporary dance to samba and capoeira to Merzouki’s own expertise in circus and martial arts. By avoiding social stereotypes, Compagnie Käfig has managed to create its own unique style that does not deny its hip-hop origins, but rather enables the hip-hop movement to win over diverse audiences around the world.

DAN CE

Based on the famous novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes, the ballet is known for its demanding choreography and technical wizardry. Don Quixote is a marriage of traditional ballet and Spanish dance – full of “heat,” firelight and thrills. This classic follows Spain’s legendary hero and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, to Barcelona on a quest for his dream lover, Dulcinea.

E

“We are very excited to present Don Quixote,” said Saint Louis Ballet Artistic Director Gen Horiuchi. “Not only is it our first time dancing this classic, but it’s the first time a St. Louis company has mounted an original production of the ballet. It is one of the most extravagant productions, and St. Louis audiences will love the energy and passion.”

To our generous donors, Thank you for giving generously to UMSL Fine Arts and Communication and to the Touhill Performing Arts Center. Your gifts this past year provide a transformational learning experience in the classroom, in studios and galleries, in productions and on our stages. The departments and disciplines represented in the college – art and art history, communication, dance, media studies, music and theatre – are all closely linked by their core values to build and facilitate access to information, elevate the human spirit, provide understanding and historical context, enhance critical thinking and entertain with imagination, originality and unique interpretation. The Touhill is a vital part of the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) and the St. Louis arts community. UMSL has created an exceptional space that is an academic laboratory, a home for community arts organizations, a classroom for K-12 grade students and a venue for unique national and international acts. Your contribution creates thousands of success stories. Your investment provides special experiences that shape lives for years to come, from art history students following their passion to first graders discovering theirs. With your support, we continue to make important cultural and economic contributions to the region. Thank you again for supporting UMSL Fine Arts and Communication and the Touhill. VOLUNTEER

Volunteers and Touhill staff are partners, each with an equal and complementary role in realizing the Touhill experience for our patrons. All performances are supported by nearly 120 active community volunteers who serve as ticket takers, greeters, guest service representatives and ushers.

How it works Volunteers choose the performance opportunities they want to assist – based on their interests and availability. The coordinator assigns them to selected events and returns their schedule confirmation. On the day of the event, the volunteer will be assigned a task position based on the needs of the performance. Most of the volunteers get to see or experience a majority of the show itself! We ask that volunteers commit to at least 12 events a year to remain in active status as a member of the Guild. For volunteers, events last just around five hours from call time to dismissal.

Major perks!

Touhill volunteers are afforded special benefits associated with giving time to an UMSL organization: Experience Touhill performances on us, with two complimentary tickets per active volunteer. Access to The Mark Twain Building, host to a wide range of recreational activities and programs including a running track, workout facilities and a swimming pool. Free admission to Triton home games. 10% discount on purchases at the Campus Bookstore. A vision care discount with 25% off comprehensive care examinations and eyeglasses.
