ALARM WILL SOUND & OPERA THEATRE SAINT LOUIS:
THE HUNGER
Underdog history comes to life through new music and old Irish songs in composer Donnacha Dennehy’s opera about the Great Famine of 1845-52. The story itself is rooted in Asenath Nicholson’s harrowing first-person account in Annals of the Famine in Ireland. Acclaimed ensemble Alarm Will Sound and celebrated Irish folk singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, imagine soprano Katherine Manley as Nicholson and Ó Lionáird as the voice of the voiceless, with instrumentalists integrated into the staging. Old recordings of traditional sean-nós songs dovetail seamlessly with Dennehy’s score, while video clips of interviews with Noam Chomsky, Paul Krugman, and others underscore the political roots of this tragedy that brought a nation to its knees.

FEATURING FRANK ALMOND
Frank Almond’s pedigree is no less remarkable. He serves as the Charles and Marie Caestecker Concertmaster Chair at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO). He returned to the MSO after holding positions as Concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev, and Guest Concertmaster of the London Philharmonic under Kurt Masur. He has been a member of the chamber group An die Musik in New York City since 1997, and also founded and directs the Frankly Music Chamber Series based in Milwaukee. Almond began playing on the Lipi´nski in 2008, and subsequently made plans to be the first to make a modern, technically advanced recording with the instrument. When A Violin’s Life was released in April 2013, featuring works and composers directly associated with the Lipinski Stradivarius, it immediately charted in the Billboard Top 10.
On January 27, 2014, the Stradivari was stolen from Mr. Almond in an armed robbery after a concert. While the violin was recovered nine days later, the tale behind the heist continues to make headlines around the world – and adds a layer of mythology to the already storied instrument. Today, Almond travels to present a series of concerts and master classes both in US and abroad commemorating the 300th birthday of the violin, featuring works from both A Violin’s Life and other music connected with the overall history of the instrument.

It’s a storybook career for a musical instrument. Sure, its provenance as a 1715 Stradivari violin is itself significant. But the fact that this is the Lipi´nski takes its status as historic to another level. To most aficionados the violin had “disappeared” for a couple of decades, unusual for a 1715 Stradivari.

The ASQ follows with Bela Bartok’s scintillating Quartet No.4, a work inspired by Hungarian folk music and propelled by Bartok’s profound genius. For the finale, acclaimed Russian pianist Sofya Gulyak joins the Arianna for a performance of Antonin Dvorak’s everpopular Piano Quintet, Op.81, a work of expansive beauty and poetic lyricism. The ASQ embarks on its 25th season with one of their favorites, Felix Mendelssohn’s cherished Op.13 String Quartet, a work that balances turbulent brilliance with an inner fragility, unique to Mendelssohn, and beloved by audiences. Philip Glass’ stirring String Quartet No.3, which served as the tonal backdrop for the 1985 film Mishima, follows, capturing Glass’ iconic purity of expression and signature sound driving the compelling story of a life in turmoil. The Arianna Quartet then welcomes world-renowned violist Richard Young for a performance of Beethoven’s sizzling String Quintet Op.29, the “Storm,” an early work that offers a fresh glimpse into the dynamic power of the great composer, and rousing finish to the season opener.

This passionate ballet production contrasts concepts of duality through light and dark and a dramatic simplicity of sets as well as costumes splashed with color. Prokofiev’s classic music is stirring in this original exploration of the fate of the star-crossed lovers. PAVLO For being all instrumental, Pavlo’s Mediterranean music speaks for itself. After years of guitar lessons, from classical to flamenco, Pavlo spent his early years playing in rock groups, and wedding bands. Pavlo was inspired to write his first self-titled album. Although there were many people that told him it was a “fantasy” to think he would find success, he followed his heart and sent the album to music executives all over the country. When they responded with “it is too ethnic” and “there’s no market for this type of music,” Pavlo became driven to create his own record label, and market himself. Soon, through craft shows, café gigs and festival performances all over the country playing his Mediterranean music, Pavlo did, in fact, find his audience. They were equally as passionate about his music…and they wanted more of it. Pavlo released his second album, Fantasia. Fantasia climbed the charts and made it to the Billboard Top 10 and earned Pavlo his first Juno Nomination.

CLASSIC ALBUMS LIVE Led Zepplin II NOTE FOR NOTE. CUT FOR CUT.
NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU LISTENED TO LED ZEPPELIN II ON VINYL OR THE RADIO, THERE’S SOMETHING ENTIRELY DIFFERENT ABOUT HEARING THE ALBUM PLAYED LIVE – START TO FINISH. That’s exactly what Classic Albums Live does, brings together some of the country’s finest musicians to recreate the exact sounds of some of the greatest albums recorded. Last season, Classic Albums Live performed Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon at the Touhill to rave audience reviews. So the group is coming back, this time for Led Zeppelin’s enduring critical and fan favorite. And it does so with the same reverence as an orchestra performs Beethoven. Performing Led Zeppelin calls for a new set of musicians. ”That’s the real challenge,” says Craig Maring, founder, “finding the right musicians for the right album. So far, we’ve been bang-on with every performance.” And if that’s not enough, the second half of the evening features the rest of Led Zeppelin’s greatest hits. Now that’s a “Whole Lotta Love.”

But George Takei’s story goes where few stories have gone before. From a childhood spent with his family wrongfully imprisoned in a Japanese Internment Camp during WWII, to becoming one of the country’s leading figures in the fight for social justice, LGBTQ rights, and marriage equality-George Takei remains a powerful voice on issues ranging from politics to pop culture.

DIANNE REEVES CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE
314.516.4949 | touhill.org
Dianne Reeves is the pre-eminent jazz vocalist in the world today. Her singing draws upon a world of influences; as a result of her virtuosity, improvisational gifts and unique R&B and jazz stylings, Reeves was awarded the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for her three last consecutive recordings—a Grammy first in any vocal category. For this return engagement at the Touhill, Reeves will celebrate the season with selections from Christmas Time is Here, a recording that falls into that rare category of Christmas records—simply, a wonderful record. “I love the big gray sky hovering outside my kitchen window,” says Reeves. “Inside, I’m cooking for about thirty people—which I love to do—listening to mellow music. It’s the perfect time to sit back, relax and float through great music,” Reeves added. “The search for the songs for my record took longer than the recording itself.” When Reeves’ holiday collection Christmas Time is Here was released, Ben Ratliff of The New York Times raved, “Ms. Reeves, a jazz singer of frequently astonishing skill, takes the assignment seriously; this is one of the best jazz Christmas CD’s I’ve heard.”

VOLUNTEER Would you like to see more shows?
Do you like helping your community? Are you interested in spending more time with people who share your passion for the performing arts? Consider joining the Touhill Volunteer Guild! The Guild consists of community members that serve as greeters, ticket takers, and ushers for almost all Touhill events. Here’s how it works: Volunteers sign up for the performances that interest them. The Touhill Volunteer Coordinator confirms availibility, then, on the day of the show, assigns posts. Normally, our volunteers get to see the majority of the performance. We ask that volunteers commit to at least 12 events a year, with each event requiring about five hours.
To learn more pick up a flyer from the volunteer display in the lobby, visit www.touhill.org/volunteer, call 314-516-4100, or email sjennifer@umsl.edu.
