Caroline-Artemis Welcome to MICE & TOURISM around the World e-Magazine and enjoy this May edition!
The countdown is on! Holidays are almost back on track for the summer of 2021. The checklist before you leave is a bit more complicated this summer; Other than the usual like your passport and sun cream, your list of essential things to take will also include… …plenty of face masks… protective face visor… travel-sized disinfectant spray… hand sanitiser… disinfectant wipes… personal water bottle… Track & Trace app downloaded… Locator Form Completed… Post Covid-19 Travel Insurance… Vaccine Certificate… negative Covid-19 test result….! But don’t forget that countries can quickly change the rules and restrictions giving you just 24/48hrs notice, so you will also have to think about taking plenty to keep you busy if you get put in quarantine, as well as extra money for tests and the cost of you r quarantine stay when you get back home, which could add about UK£1,700 onto you original holiday budget. And don’t forget the 6hr wait in the long queues at immigration to get back into your own country!
This is ‘life’ back to normal! If this has not put you off going on holiday, which will require you to wear a face mask in 30°+ heat, then the extra ‘new norm’ advice is to visit ‘fewer places for a shorter period of time!’… why bother going at all , you may think? Happy Holidays!

CLEOPATRA’S Algerian Pyramids by Caroline-Artemis Laspas
One of history’s best known Queens is Cleopatra, ruler of Ancient Egypt, (Cleopatra, Thea Philopator in Greek, daughter of the Greek Macedonian King Ptolemy the XII). It is here that people believe the only Pyramids can be found. However, there are many places with theses amazing structures, including Algeria. Dating back centuries, the Jeddars of Algeria are 13 Berber mausoleums or pyramid tombs whose square stone bases are topped with angular mounds. They are located on two hills near the city of Tiaret, 250km southwest of the Algerian capital, Algiers. th
Built between the 4-7 centuries, the tombs are still a mystery as to why they were built and for whom, but it is believed they were resting places for Berber royalty. Algerian authorities and archaeologists have requested for the tombs to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage site list in order to preserve and study them. Years of looting, neglect and deterioration from the elements has left the Jeddar’s in a bad condition and there are many including royal shrines, which have not even been entered and need urgent protection. With protected status and preservation, the sites can become part of Algeria’s tourist attraction offering.
At the time of their construction, Berber Kings ruled the area. Very little is known about them, with very little trace of their existence remaining today. These tombs could hold the key to finding out more. At the time of their prime, the area was in conflict as the Roman Empire was collapsing and the former Roman province of Numidia was invaded by Byzantine troops and Arab forces and so the monuments were abandoned.

EUROPEAN SMART TOURISM CAPITAL 2022
The European Commission has launched a competition to find the ‘European Capital of Smart Tourism 2022’. The initiative aims to reward European cities for their remarkable, innovative and sustainable tourism practices. The European Commission points out that "innovation, accessibility and sustainability are the future of tourism and the objective of the European Commission is to keep tourism in the lead." The European Capital of Smart Tourism is open to all EU cities as well as certain countries outside the EU.
In the process it is hoped that ‘best practises’ can be shared thereby creating opportunities for cooperation and new partnerships. Entrants must demonstrate their innovative tourism practices in 4 areas: accessibility, sustainability, digitisation, cultural heritage and creativity. The candidates will be evaluated by a panel of independent experts who will decided on 7 shortlisted cities who will be invited to present their case before the European Jury. The European Jury will select 2 winners which will be announced in November 2021. Both winning cities will receive special support in communication and brand image during 2022, along with the production of a promotional video, among other awards.

Ancient Silk Road CITY OF GAOCHANG by Dima Lavinovich
The Gaochang Ruins were once the thriving ancient City of Gaochang, an oasis city on the northern edge of the hostile Taklamakan Desert at the foot of the Flaming Mountains in present-day Xinjiang, China. Gaochang was once a prosperous city serving as capital for 3 western states in ancient times. The city played an important role as the political, economic and cultural centre of Xinjiang and therefore was a key city in the ancient Silk Road. Gaochang is one of the best preserved ancient cities in China, it has survived for over 2,000 years and even today you can still feel the magnificence of this ancient city. It incorporated 3 parts; the outer city in a square form, has a 5km circumference with some walls still remaining; the inner city in the middle, whose walls no longer exist is the centre; and the palace city in the north of the complex was considered to be a magnificent building, but only the cornerstones of the 4-storied imperial palace remain today. At its hight, the city was home to a population of approx. 30,000 people and was a bustling centre long the Silk Road. Its huge earthen walls once towered at over 11m high. Nine city gates were located in the 4 cardinal points. The gates in the west are the best preserved. In the southwestern and south eastern parts of the outer city stand two temples ruins; the south-western corner temple consists of a gate, a courtyard, a sermon hall, a sutra depository and monks' house. The south eastern temple consists of a many-sided tower and a worship grotto, with stunning murals which are well preserved.
Over time, thousands of priceless historical artefacts have been discovered like mummies, writings, inscriptions, paintings, earthen figurines, pieces of stone, pottery, wood, bronze, iron, gold, silver, as well as ancient coins and cotton, silk, and wool. Gaochang was also a sanctuary of world religious culture. During the Tang Dynasty, it became one of the primary Buddhist cities. On his way to India, the Buddhist monk Xuanzang stopped at Gaochang to give lectures. There was also a Confucian college of classics, and a church of Nestorian Christianity found on the outskirts of the town. With the extended Uyghur Empire, Manichaeism made its home in Gaochang, while Islam became the dominant religion of the region in 1390.
Indeed the many finds discovered at the city suggest that Gaochang may have been one of the oldest multi-ethnic and multi-religious cities in China. The ancient site was included in the Silk Road UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 and since then the site has had many renovations and preservation projects.
EUROPEAN COUNTRIES END TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS FOR VACCINATED TRAVELLERS The majority of European countries are to ease travel restrictions on both business and leisure travel for travellers who have been fully vaccinated against C19 virus. The aim is to attract more people to accept the vaccination. The European countries, will welcome tourists from countries with relatively low infection rates as well as those who are fully vaccinated. Like in the old days, when we travelled with yellow vaccine certifications, a new digital version will become mandatory for all travellers. With cases rising and falling and new variants appearing, many nations will still have the power to Restrict travel with short notice to and from certain nations.

The Australian government will make the final decision on international travel restarting and would take into account the effectiveness of vaccines, the level of cases in various destinations, etc. Australia has limited its citizens from leaving the country to prevent bringing infections back home. Most of Australia's COVID-19 cases were infected overseas and were diagnosed during 14-days hotel quarantine which is mandatory for travellers on arrival.

AVAITION Flying High From 2022-2023 by Dimitri Laspas
In 2019, the aviation industry was well and truly flying high. The number of routes was growing, more eco-aircraft were taking to the skies, more than ever flying was the transport of choice and for passengers, flying had become a very economical option to go from A to B. Then the global pandemic arrived and overnight everything stopped. As we finally seem to be coming to terms with a ‘new norm’ in many aspects of our lives, this too applies to flying all over the world. Over the past year and a half, airlines, airports, and all the support services linked to the running of the sector has seen massive losses, both in terms of business, production, supply chain and jobs. You may well ask when will it all get back to normal? The simple answer is not yet. It will be a very gradual recovery and one that is not set to begin in earnest until 2022-2023. IATA, the International Air Transport Association sees the aviation sector will still suffer negative losses during 2021 with more positive rd forecasts into 2022 and towards 3 quarter of 2023. Already for the first half of 2021, with continued Covid variants spreading in many areas of the world, countries are still keeping borders closed and restriction travel for citizens in order to contain the situation. Summer bookings for July and August 2021 are approximately 78% below February 2019 figures, but there ‘could’ be a surge in last minute bookings if countries lift restrictions in time for more open travel to begin. Many nations are still pushing heavily for their populations to be vaccinated as quickly as possible, especially in the northern hemisphere, as this would allow for a quicker re-opening of borders and travel over the summer season. However, this still sees demand at just 38% of 2019 levels. For airlines, the level of funding required to just keep operational in these limited times of travel, is causing them to literally burn money! If variants spread and cases rise, then governments would not hesitate to restrict, yet again, travel through the peak northern summer travel season. Already 2021 is looking to be far more tough that previously expected and decisions to open destinations keep changing creating huge hesitation among traveller, who are desperate to spend time on a holiday after 14 months of frustration, anxiety and depression due to the never ending pandemic. If more restrictions are put in place then airlines will again require significant financial aid from governments until the crisis ends. With a properly running airline industry, it can help energise the economic recovery from COVID-19. Airlines and all the support systems need to be ready the moment governments allow for more normal travel to resume. This will mean three initiatives critical: Planning: To get planes in the sky again, takes time to service the aircraft and plan to get planes where they are needed. The re-opening needs to happen in an orderly manner. Here in the UK the ‘roadmap’ out of the crisis has given all companies a framework with which to work with based on all scientific information supporting the roadmap recommendations. Health Credentials: To continue to control the virus and keep economies going, travel passports, vaccination cards etc are being put in place to keep things moving.
Passengers can be confident that their health status will be shared with relevant authorities, protecting, them and other passengers and crew. This is where the digitalisation of data is key to keep it up to date so there are no delays; manual systems will not cope with the necessary checks and proof required to travel. The industry cannot risk delays once it starts up again – otherwise everyone has failed. Global Standards: With greater vaccination programmes and testing capacity expanded, the development of global standards in terms of recording tests and vaccines is crucial. If each country is using different schemes, software and methods, the delays and misinformation will be rife. To monitor greater numbers of returning passengers needs a simple, quick and easy method.
Governments and the aviation industry need to think one step ahead. Greater partnerships between airlines need to continue as they have done successfully for decades; but now it is even more essential! For sure, many nations can now see a light at the end of the tunnel. It is key for that light to turn into a shining bright sun for holidays and business travel to begin again and so airlines and governments need to work hand in hand to make it happen and for Covid-19 to be something we live with but that it does not dictate us.

‘HEALTH CRISIS’ CONTINUES TO HIT GLOBAL TOURISM INDUSTRY During the pandemic, global business travel spending dropped by 60% year-on-year to UK£360 billion, while leisure travel spending dropped by 50% compared to preCovid-19levels. Despite new health and safety measures being implemented by hotels and resorts, and a slow reopening in the 2nd half of 2020, the 2nd wave of the pandemic brought the sector further to its knees, seeing 83% of business travel companies lay off employees and 74% cutting pay. In 2019 the USA had the highest business tourism spending globally. Overall US expenditure on business trips by domestic and international travellers reached approximately UK£254 billion. The EU and China were next with approximately UK£173 billion and UK£128 billion, respectively. Covid-19 changed that. In 2019, the global business travel spending hit an alltime high of UK£932 billion. After Covid-19 ground things to a halt, this figure dropped by UK£566 billion. Domestic tourism is being seen by most countries as a way to rebuild business in view of the possibility of travel restrictions being reestablished at any moment. Leisure Travel, the sectors largest, saw huge revenue losses in 2020. Between 2010 and 2019, global leisure travel spending doubled to nearly UK£3.4 trillion. After Covid-19 hit, market revenues plunged 50% year-on-year to UK£1.6 trillion in 2020. It is expected that recovery will take years. Even with a projected growth of 54% year on year with the combined revenues of the hotels, cruises, package holidays, and private holiday rentals, that will still be 26% less than in 2019. 2022 is looking better for sure, with a forecast for UK£478 billion in revenues, but still UK£52 billion below pre-Covid-19 figures. 2025 is now being seen as the realistic prediction of travel and tourism to be close to 2019 figures.

ITALY TOURISM TO CHANGE MODEL AFTER 60% DROP
Before the pandemic, the citizens of Venice in Italy were pleased that large cruise ships had been banned from the lagoon shores. It would limit tourists swamping the narrow canals and streets of the water city. Now tourism is affected due to a massive drop in tourists due to the pandemic. Latest estimates believe that approx. 100,000 tourist units are on the verge of bankruptcy. The pandemic caused a drop in tourists, which resulted in a €26.85 billion drop in revenue to €17.45 billion in 2020. 25.5 million visitors arrived in the country, down from 65 million in 2019; a drop of over 60%. However, this has given the opportunity to look at tourism in a new way. No longer will they welcome mass tourism but controlled tourism. Cities like Venice and Florence were sinking with over-tourism and now their Mayors have unveiled a joint plan to protect cities and control tourism. Fines will be issued to mis-behaving tourists and smart surveillance will monitor the city hot spots. Improved regulation of accommodation rentals, a relative reduction in certain tourist activities and a special emphasis on maintaining local shops and craft in the neighbourhoods of the historic city centres is also part of the plan.

CRUISING RESUMES IN THE HEART OF VENICE, ITALY
After much global publicity, cruise ships were finally banned from docking in the main lagoon in Venice. They will now dock at the nearby industrial port of Marghera. However, until a suitable terminal reception facility at Marghera is ready, cruise ships will still dock alongside St. Mark’s Square from this summer. It is a bitter – sweet situation with Venice desperate to see tourists back after the pandemic, but not at the cost of such a long fight to get cruise ships away from the main area of the lagoon. Several Cruise ships have already confirmed that will be operations from late June and so it seems that for the time being, life will continue as it used to in Venice until the new terminal is ready at Marghera.
