Caroline-Artemis The summer season has arrived along with the July edition of the e-Magazine. This year sees a different scene from years gone by, but at least travel is happening this year! However, it is not ‘back to normal’ and travelling at times seems to have regressed 10 years when it comes to checking in online, self-check-in at the airport, security and immigration controls. It all seems a bit more complicated and much more hassle. Many airports, particularly across Europe are struggling with fewer staff following the health crisis, which saw thousands of workers return to their home countries and not return or leave the sector completely to find more secure jobs.

Sailing, the Greek Aegean sea

In addition, aviation and supply chain employers happily made hundreds of people redundant and now, they cannot recruit and train staff quickly enough in time for the surge in demand for travel, but also employers are offering lower wages and less favourable conditions with fewer benefits. The term ’Shooting yourself in the foot’ comes to mind! This has therefore placed a huge strain on services at almost all levels, and ultimately making travelling for each and every one of us, that little bit more frustrating with longer queues, piled up luggage and cancelled flights. But… once at your destination, the sun will shine and you can take a breath and relax! (as long as your luggage turns up!) Enjoy this early summer edition of the MICE & TOURISM around the World e-Magazine!

PLATINUM JUBILEE Round Up! by Caroline-Artemis Laspas

On Thursday 2nd June, London welcomed thousands of well-wishers to its streets to celebrate the beginning of the long Jubilee weekend. Added to which the sun shone brightly! With the traditional Trooping of the Colour in Horse Guards Parade, there was then a spectacular fly past with some of the most iconic aircraft in British aviation history. MICE & TOURISM around the World were there in a totally packed Trafalgar Square to be part of this incredible experience. A special formation of 15 Typhoons spelt out 70 to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, followed by the finale of a flypast by the RAF Red Arrows with red, white and blue trails. The roar of cheers from the crowd along with the sound of the jet engines overhead was emotional and unique.

Street parties and gatherings began to take place across the country over the following 3 days. Saturday night saw the ‘Party at the Palace’ in which Her Majesty, wishing to be part of her own celebrations, took part in an adorable comic sketch with one the UK’s best loved children’s character’s, Paddington Bear. The dazzling concert took place in front of Buckingham Palace with the palace used a backdrop for an amazing IMEX cinema projection, followed by a wonderful light show high in the sky above the Palace.

Although her Majesty was unable to attend some of the events, this in no way detracted from the celebrations. What made up for it all, was the surprise appearance of HM on the Palace Balcony on the Sunday afternoon after the very British and quirky street pageant.

HM Queen Elizabeth II is now the 2nd longest reigning monarch in history. This year she moved from 3rd to 2nd place and has a couple more years to go before taking the ‘crown’ of 1st prize, which is currently held by King Louis 14th of France who reigned for 72 years and 110 days. Are we counting the days? You bet we are!

The Platinum Jubilee was a once in a lifetime event and it was a truly memorable experience and wonderful to be a small part of this unique moment in history.

CONVENTA WEEK 2022 Hybrid CONVENTA will once more take place from 24-25 August 2022. Since the inception of the pandemic, CONVENTA has followed a detailed protocol for responsible event realisation that enables the project to comply with ever changing circumstances. In line with the protocol, the organisers of CONVENTA had set10 January 2022 as the original event date. However, given the unfavourable epidemiological situation, the organisers have concluded that organising the event in the winter term is impossible. Thus, the event will be joined with nd CONVENTA Crossover for the 2 year. CONVENTA WEEK will take place from 24-27 August in live or hybrid form, depending on the circumstances. One of the organisers’ promises is to execute the event safely. With their agility and flexibility, they succeeded both in 2020 and 2021. CONVENTA is among the handful of business events in the meetings industry that has not been halted by the corona crisis. Gorazd Čad, the co-founder of CONVENTA, emphasised: “Conventa is entirely adapted to the hybrid future. We could have executed the event digitally in the original term. However, after discussing with partners, exhibitors and hosted buyers, the message was clear. Everyone wants a live event, where they can experience genuine human contact, and we will enable them to do so in August.” Among the organisers’ key responsibilities is complying with necessary safety restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Hence, the organisers acquired the Safe and Healthy Meetings & Events certificate, which evolved in 2021 based on prior experiences. The updated roadmap includes numerous restrictions, including attendee testing, hygienic measures and upholding the CONVENTA bubble. The organisers are planning several additional activities that will take place in an online or hybrid version alongside the main event. “Once a year, we have the opportunity to meet in person in Ljubljana at the festival of the regional congress industry. We will do everything in our power to keep it that way regardless of the impediments. Above all, we desire to meet in person, as personal contact is priceless,” explained Miha Kovačič, co-founder of CONVENTA. SAVE THE DATE FOR THE PREMIER TRADE SHOW OF NEW EUROPE The last week of August will be marked by CONVENTA and CONVENTA Crossover CONVENTA business tradeshow will take place from 24 to 25 August 2022 at the Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre, while the festival of events – CONVENTA Crossover - will welcome participants from 26-27 August 2022 in Ljubljana.

TECHNOLOGY DRIVING FORWARD CHINA’S MICE SECTOR The MICE sector in China has grown rapidly over the past 20 years, becoming just as important as its tourism product. Its continued development needs careful indepth analysis and research as it grows into the future. Technology is playing a big part in driving the sector forward with special algorythems identifying key topics searched in relation to the MICE sector eg: ‘MICE tourism management’, ‘MICE tourism industry’, ‘MICE tourism economy’, ‘MICE tourist city’ and ‘MICE tourism development strategy’, help direct the development of China’s MICE tourism industry. Beijing, China

Technology will still led the way by strengthening research on the changes of MICE tourism and various integrations brought about by IT technologies such as mobile internet, 5G, artificial intelligence, blockchain, big data, and cloud computing, and attach importance to the important promotion of the development of engineering technology, information technology and new media to the MICE tourism industry.

2nd QATAR TRAVEL MART DATES ANNOUNCED! NeXTfairs has announced the return of Qatar Travel Mart (QTM). nd The 2 edition will take place on 9th – 11th October, 2023 at Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC)! nd

We have postponed the 2 edition to 2023 due to the hectic season of FIFA World Cup and unavailability of a proper exhibition venue this year. Our team had been scouting for a venue since November of last year and had approached several different sites. They were, however, either unavailable or inappropriate for the show. With the theme of “Bringing Destinations, People, and Culture, closer!”, QTM 2023 will gather the world's top destinations and reveal the most recent trends in Sports, MICE, Business, Cultural, Leisure, Luxury, Medical, and Halal tourism. As Qatar will host one of the world's most popular sporting events FIFA world cup 2022, it is expected that QTM 2023 will serve as a platform for gathering various tourism entities to support its legacy, such as DMCs, Tour Operators, Travel Agencies, Travel Technology Companies, Associations, and Tourism Boards, both local and international. The Travel and Tourism industry needs a place to make fresh connections, seize new opportunities, and reconnect the destinations now more than ever. The second 2nd edition of QTM Conference will bring together a reservoir of thought leaders, experts, and significant stakeholders to deliver insights into the industry's most recent trends and innovations. The very stage will also be showcasing the exciting performances as Cultural Village from all over the world. On top of that, we will continue our Hosted Buyer Programme to link the qualified buyers with QTM exhibitors and visitors, while celebrating the industry’s best through Awards Ceremony at a grand Gala Dinner setting. Buenos Aires, Argentina

THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARGENTINA IN MEETING TOURISM At the recent International Congress on Tourism Cooperation, INPROTUR (The National Institute for Tourism Promotion) outlined the development that has taken place since the launch of the Federal Meetings Tourism Marketing Plan in 2008. It was highlighted the positive impact that both public and private sectors working to promote the segment in the country had achieved in positioning Argentina as the main meeting tourism destination in Ibero-America. During the last 15 years, MICE has been articulated with other products, so that attendees can live experiences related to adventure tourism, wine, luxury, among others. When the programme began, Argentina had just 7 bureaus and now it has 32, highlighting that the private sector got involved and actively participated. The country has a specific meeting tourism coordination. It generates meetings with international event organisers, as well as with local associations in Argentina to show them the support it can offer them to capture events. ICCA international statistics for 2019 show that Ibero-America has 11% of the world market for congresses, compared to 2008 when the region had just 5%. The region has grown through co-operation and alliances made with Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay and Colombia, to work together. If Latin America grows, so will each of the countries. This resulted in Argentina, for the first time, to occupy the 1st position of the ICCA ranking in Ibero-America, replacing Brazil. In 2008 Argentina was in 18th place!

TOURISM & TRAVEL SHOW ALBANIA 14-15 October 2022, Tirana, Albania The ‘TOURISM & TRAVEL SHOW ALBANIA’, a regional tourism event is to take place from 14-15 October 2022, at the Palace of Congresses, Tirana. The exhibition offers a business communication platform for the most important local, regional and international actors in the tourism industry. Tourism tends to be seasonal at a global level but this feature is particularly strong in our region where travel for leisure and holidays, are more concentrated during the summer period, accounts for more than 80% of the Region’s international tourism compared wit h 70% worldwide. An ideal strategy to reduce seasonality would be to encourage business tourism, given that trade fairs and congresses tend to be held in the autumn. That’s why we have proposed this autumnal trade fair, as an B2B event, to be designed as the next meeting point for the professional and byers form all over the world that are interested in our common destination product. The most important trends and developments shaping the sector will be covered. Visitors will discover how to access free travelling package from the national tourist sellers, how to secure off-peak bookings, and how to strategies for long-term growth. Meet & Match section or Hosted Byers Programme we will bring about 100 professional buyers from around 50 countries, interested in the regional product, Albanian and regional sellers as well as bloggers, influencers and decisional institutions from the region. In addition, a widespread convention section will be held during the 2-day exhibition and it will be organised of various topics from local and international speakers. Tourism & Travel Show 2022 will be organised by Iceberg Exhibitions, a Trade Fair and Exhibition Organiser which is presented by Iceberg Communication, one of the first innovative and integrated advertising and communication agencies founded in Tirana, 1999.

THE BIG BANG EVENT THE RETURN OF POSIDONIA HIGHLIGHTS RENEWED OPTIMISM FOR A MORE BUYOANT SHIPPING INDUSTRY Posidonia, the Home of Shipping has reopened its doors to a great reception from the global maritime community who will be hoping for them to never be shut again. Could Posidonia 2024 be even bigger and more influential than what the global maritime community witnessed unfolding last week at the Metropolitan Exhibition Centre just a short drive from the Athens International Airport? Well, barring another cataclysmic world event such as the Covid-19 pandemic, the answer should be a resounding, ‘Yes of course!’ And why not? With 1,964 exhibiting companies from 88 countries and some 29,000 visitors from 103 countries and territories who flooded the exhibition and conference rooms to their rims, this year’s event set new benchmarks and standards for volume, size and quality that makes Posidonia organisers confident that potential for further growth will always be there. The number of overall participants, including exhibitors, visitors and press exceeded the 40,000 people mark. With these fundamentals intact and even stronger compared to the 2018 event and with the absence of many Asian and mainly Chinese visitors who could not have attended this year’s event due to Covid-19 related travel restrictions, the assumption of an even greater 2024 event is a credible one. “Our challenge for this year was to resume the event and rediscover the momentum lost during the height of the pandemic. I think we did a pretty good job, to not only achieve both of our basic objectives for the event, but to also set the bar even higher for the future,” said Theodore Vokos, Managing Director, Posidonia Exhibitions S.A. “The response and feedback we received from exhibitors, visitors, government officials and maritime stakeholders were overwhelmingly buoyant. The four-year gap brought even more energy and a renewed optimism everywhere you’d look at and all indications are that the industry will continue to support Posidonia for years to come.” The type of exhibitor feedback ranged from admiration to gratitude. In the words of Richa Dutt Nandan, Marketing Manager, Varuna Marine Services, Posidonia 2022 was “a series of conversations between ship owners and service providers, the class and the flag states, the associations and organizations, the design, and the innovation. A melting pot for traditions, ideas and innovations brought in by thousands of worldwide companies and professionals.” And some were astounded by the record numbers: “It was great to see Posidonia back, bigger and better than ever. Record numbers of visitors and exhibitors. It gave us a great opportunity to see our clients face to face after such a long time in lockdown. G ulf Oil Marine will continue to support the Greek shipping community and we will look forward to the next Posidonia,” said David Price, CEO Gulf Oil Marine.

ITALY AT HAND - 2022 CAMPANIA 16-18 NOVEMBER 2022 th

Convention Bureau Italia and ENIT are proud to announce the 4 edition of Italy at Hand, which will be held on 16-18 November 2022. After 3 editions aimed at consolidating the event, this year will mark the beginning of its evolution, which aims to expand its offer and to elevate Italy at Hand as the benchmark event for international buyers interested in Italy as a top-tier MICE Destination. The most obvious consequence of this process concerns the destination: after organising the previous editions in Bologna, Rome and Milan, the host destination of Italy at Hand 2022 will be the Campania Region; with Naples hosting the B2B sessions and the social and team building activities, while a best-selling destination such as Sorrento will team up with other 'rising stars' such as Salerno, Campi Flegrei, Ischia and Procida in hosting post-tour activities, underlining Italy’s signature feature of being the quintessential multi-destination for MICE events. However, the evolution does not stop there: although Italy at Hand will maintain the same format that determined its success in the first three editions, there will also be a significant increase in the number of participants. In fact, the event will include, as usual, 3 days of networking, distinguished by the seamless integration of business and entertainment. However, this year there will be 40 of the best Italian MICE suppliers meeting 55 high-profile international buyers - against the 45 buyers and 35 suppliers of the previous editions – for an estimate of over 1,200 B2B scheduled appointments. In addition, the guests will experience 4 informal and fun activities connected to the emotions, images, sensations and inspirations sparked by Italy’s identity and its traditions. The detailed program will be announced at a later stage this year once it will be made final. The Campania Region had the foresight to see in Italy at Hand a unique opportunity to enchant international buyers with the magic of their places, their food and their culture: “It is with great pride and satisfaction that Campania Region is looking forward to hosting, for the first time in southern Italy, Italy at Hand, the international MICE workshop organized by Convention Bureau Italia and ENIT.” -states Felice Casucci, Campania Region Councilor for Administrative Semplification and Tourism. “Campania with its extraordinary beauty, it’s fascinating thousand-year history, the largest number of UNESCO awards in Italy, the inestimable food and wine heritage, the distinctive hospitality and its proverbial authenticity, will allow international buyers, coming from the main MICE business generator markets, to live the emotion of a UNIQUE experience and to touch the variety of the offer of “Campania Divina” at hand.” The countdown to Italy at Hand, The Event has officially begun!

Hosted at the Westin BonVoy, the event attracted buyers and sellers from all over the world and MICE & TOURISM around the World e-Magazine were again honoured to be present and supporting the event as International Media Partners. Also returning to the event after a very successful Spring edition were the Ethiopian delegation. This Summer edition welcomed Saudi Arabia as the Gold Partner of the event, which gave the chance for Saudi Arabia to promote the multitude of tourism projects, investment opportunities as well as highlights its diverse culture, traditions, stunning pristine landscapes and hospitality with displays of Arabic coffee, traditional sweets, dried dates and video presentations. Saudi is an under-discovered destination offering 6 UNESCO World Heritage sites, over 10,000 archaeological sites, the pristine Red Sea, the mountainous Asir region, home to Rijal Almaa which was voted a UNWTO ‘best tourism village’ in 2021 among much more! As the country diversifies its industry away from oil production, under its ambitious Vision 2030 plan, it hopes to bring over 100 million visitors and increase tourism GDP to 10%. Throughout MEET THE BIDDER, Ms. Katarzyna Czajka, representing Saudi Arabia in Poland, conducted many positive meetings with Polish suppliers.

The Jubilee MEET THE BIDDER hosted 34 Exhibitors, meeting with over 60 Buyers. There were over 520 meetings held throughout the busy day.

Also taking place throughout the day were ‘Bingo sessions for exhibitors, with wonderful prizes on offer. The Westin BonVoy provided a wonderful networking lunch and with a special Jubilee party in the evening, kicked off with a traditional Greek meze, sponsored by the Greek National Tourism Organisation at the Greek restaurant ‘Olivos’ located in the new trendy area of Warsaw, ‘Browary Warszawskie’ converted from an old brewery site into a lively place to meet and enjoy an evening out with many bars and restaurants.

www.meetthebidder.com

The finale was a Jubilee party, complete with cake at the SASSY night club. Co-incidentally, and with no connection, SASSY Events of Cyprus were sponsoring the evening and with a quiz and dancing, the evening was a great success.

The following morning in the warm sunshine, a local guide took a group around the stunning old city of Warsaw, which has been completely rebuilt following its destruction during WW2. It stands as a testament to the strength of Poland in the centre of Europe and it is not surprising it attracts millions of visitors to enjoy the street entertainment, the coffee shops, square, churches and traditional Polish cuisine.

At its heart is Rynek Starego Miasta Square with its colourful buildings and famous Warsaw Mermaid Statue along with picturesque narrow cobbled streets with decorative facades. This rounded off an exceptional and indeed very successful Jubilee edition of MEET THE BIDDER 2022.

LAOS Authentically Hidden Beauty By Mrs. Lylla Phunyasouk

Laos is Indochina’s last frontier. It is a mesmerising mix of 49 ethnic groups with over 90 native languages. As a former French colony, the mansions still stand as coffee shops and boutique hotels infused with French elegance sit alongside the ruins of ancient Buddhist temples. Laos captivates travellers, whether they are looking for adventure, luxury, or something unique. Located in the centre of the Southeast Asian peninsula, it is surrounded by Myanmar, Cambodia, China, Thailand, and Vietnam. There is something for everyone, from the capital of Vientiane to the immense blanket of green nature covering much of the country from the emerald tea plantations to the lime-green paddy fields together with the Mekong flowing 1,835km through the country. Laos is as authentic as it gets, creating a truly unique experience. The slow pace of life, the emphasis on individually crafted, artisanal products is still strong, allowing the country to be modern when needed but keeping tradition and culture at its core. Each ethnic group is usually recognised by their distinctive dress, as well as variations in their handicrafts – with patterns and designs passed down through generations. Around three-quarters of Laos is made up of mountains and plateaus making it a nature - lovers paradise with trekking, rafting, mountain biking and national parks full of elephants, tigers and leopards. Vientiane, the capital city is the smallest capital in Southeast Asia. It is also known as the City of the Sandalwood, but the largest city in Laos. It is a cosy city with a laid back pace and peaceful charm. Its main attractions are all in walking distance to each other. ‘That Luang’ is the national symbol of Laos; an imposing golden monument that reflects the Buddhist religion and Lao sovereignty. Built in 1566, the temple is a combination of Asian pagoda architecture and the traditional Laotian temple specific to the region. Patuxay Monument - Vientiane, Laos

Laos’ ancient royal capital, Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sits on the banks of the Mekong River. Steeped in history, stunning river views and many cultural attractions, it is a paradise with domed roof temples and preserved colonial buildings. Here hundreds of saffron-robed monks can be seen in the streets chanting making it a place of serenity and spirituality.

The Vang Vieng region is accessible by a new road from Luang Prabang. The journey there is part of the experience passing small traditional villages and stunning mountain scenery. Ideal for those wishing to discover its serenity and natural environment, it is well known for its amazing landscapes amidst rice fields and hills. The area also has many caves, cliffs and waterfalls to discover . The region of Northern Laos is mountainous with lush vegetation. It is crisscrossed with many rivers and rice paddies. Here, the local way of life remains as it has been for years and where modernity has not changed the pace of life or how things are done, making it a truly authentic place to visit. Vang Vieng

In Southern Laos, Champasak is one of the most visited areas of the country. The Wat Phu temple, known as the mountain temple, offers spectacular views as well as being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple dates from the preAngkorian period and is built in the traditional Khmer architecture, originally being dedicated to the Hindu religion. Pakse is located at the convergence of the Mekong River and its much smaller tributary, the Xe Don. With a bridge spanning the Mekong, the city is a major commercial area and tourist destination. The Bolovens Plateau is 1250m above sea level and is 50km from the town of Pakse. With opulent landscapes, spectacular waterfalls, and pristine forests; the plateau is famous for its coffee, tea and pepper. There are many ethnic villages to explore in the area. Si Phan Don is an archipelago of river islands. The landlocked ‘Four Thousand Islands’ offer relaxation in a stunning environment. Of all the islands, Don Khong is the most peaceful, with palm tree lined river banks and rice fields. Don Det offer s small market stalls and life is simple here; time has almost stood still! Don Khone is another dream island ideal for beautiful walks or bike rides. A bridge connects this island with Don Det, dating back to French colonial days.

Si Phan Don, Laos

Laos along with its neighbours offer a perfect MICE region offering. Laos, although still a newcomer to the sector, offers something different from its neighbours and either as a stand-alone destination or a multi city package, the hosting opportunities are many for small as well as large corporate events, Laos is the place.

Pakse, Laos

Its natural scenery, slow pace of life, serenity, laid-back feel, combined with its strong Buddhism presence in everyday life as well as colonial charm and enchanting hospitality, makes Laos a regional winner, even without the modern super-highways or sky scrapers and modern frills of today’s life. TOURISM INDUSTRY NEEDS 3 YEARS TO RECOVER Florence, Italy

The tourism industry was hit badly by the health crisis and as a result it will need at least 3 years to recover across Europe. There are still many hotels that feel they cannot open until 2023 if they are to run properly. Some destinations are seeing a quicker recovery than others, but with the Ukraine conflict, staff shortages, soaring fuel prices and the high cost of living, many supplies cannot afford to operate, combined with many holidaymakers choosing to not go on holiday this year, making the recovery slower than expected. There is still limited air connectivity together with flight diversions to avoid certain airspace, making journeys longer and ultimately more expensive.

FIRST RUSSIAN TOURISTS TO FLY TO ISS IN 2024 At the recent St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Glavkosmos announced that ‘some of the wealthy Russian citizens’ could have the chance to fly to the ISS in 2024. Russian citizens are not normally allowed to fly to the ISS as tourists using their own money. Glavkosmos is also to begin flights on the Soyuz spacecraft in low Earth orbit without docking with the station. Last year, Glavkosmos went into agreement with 4 space tourists who could fly on 2 Soyuz in 2024. On one 3-seater ship, 2 tourists can go to MSC together with the ship's commander, a professional cosmonaut.

U.S.A YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK REOPENS FLOODING After unprecedented flooding recently, which dmamaged roads and vital park infrastructure, Yellowstone National Park has now re-opened. Three of Yellowstone's 5 entrances have opened, allowing visitors to access the south loop of the park. The 8,991sq.km park, located mainly in the northwest corner of Wyoming and extending into Montana and Idaho, were closed due to heavy flooding, rockslides and very hazardous conditions, an event seen only one every 500 years! The north loop, North and Northeast entrances will remain closed, for the time being due to extensive damage. As part of the reopening plan, park staff have engaged over 1,000 business owners, park partners, commercial operators and residents in surrounding gateway communities to determine how to manage summer visitation. Summer is the busiest season in Yellowstone. The park attracted approx. 4.86 million visitors last year.

FOREIGN TOURISM RETURNS TO ASIA PACIFIC The Pacific Asia Travel Association’s latest figures on international visitor arrivals provided by 39 Asia Pacific destinations show a gradual return of visitors from 2022-2024. Visitor recovery rates are projected to reach 25-48% of that in 2019 this year. This is an improvement from 16-18% in 2021. The figures are based on the possibility of further health crisis restrictions coming into play as the months go on, the outlook due to high oil prices, the Ukraine conflict and some limited air connectivity. At the individual destination level, recovery rates vary greatly in 2022 ranging from -15% to nearly +99%, while in 2024, they range from +86% to +120% under that same scenario.

MEXICO TO ATTRACT MORE CANADIAN HOLIDAYMAKERS The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico has developed a working tour of Canada, holding meetings with leaders of the sector. Together with the Consul General of Mexico in Vancouver, the Ministry of Tourism, Sectur, has held meetings with the Minister of Tourism, Art, Culture and Sports of British Columbia, in a bid to increase tourism between the two countries. A meeting was also held with the CEO of the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada, with the purpose of undertaking indigenous nature tourism projects in Mexico. They agreed on the importance of dignifying and strengthening indigenous communities that are of great value to cultures and a fundamental part of our roots. Different projects will be created to undertake ethnic and nature tourism in Mexico. Talks also took place with the President and CEO of Destination Canada, about the trends in the bilateral relationship between the two countries, the collaboration agreements that will boost tourism activity. Mexico aims to increase its GDP in 2022 from tourism activities to 14.7% of the national GDP and contribute about UK159,000 million to the Mexican economy.

ITALY TOURISM ON A POSITIVE LEVEL Acapulco, Mexico

Tourism in Italy is booming, despite the current issues the world is facing. Predictions for 33 million foreign tourists seem to be hopeful with the sector almost restored to pre-pandemic levels. With the health crisis still going on last year, from June to September arrivals from abroad to Italy decreased by 55%. But today with all restrictions withdrawn, tourism is back and contributes to the upward trend of arrivals. The cities of Rome, Naples and Venice, are already full of international visitors, while in famous resorts, such as Sardinia and Puglia, restaurants and hoteliers are also seeing growth. A recent survey conducted in Italy, Spain, France, Britain and Germany, saw 60% of respondents would choose Italy as their first European destination to go to. This positive news also has some edges! The price of sunbed and umbrella rental has gone up from between 5-18% with some places charge a huge UK£10.5 for an umbrella and sunbed. Italy has also not escaped the staff shortage problem, with 350,000 employees needed immediately to meet demand within the tourism sector. As a temporary solution the green light has been given for labour to entry Italy from non-EU countries.

www.isabellatoursethiopia.com UNITED STATES of AMERICA AIMS FOR 90M TOURISTS BY 2027 Devils Tower, Wyoming, USA

The United States Department of State announced a new strategy aiming to reach 90 million international tourists by 2027 which will bring in revenues of UK£232,000 million. This plan comes after the sector was devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. For the plan to work, tourism will have to be more resilient, sustainable and equitable. In addition and to aid this process, the government will modernise and simplify entry procedures for international visitors. The USA still requires arriving tourists to provide proof of vaccination and almost all international passengers arriving by air test negative before travelling. Prior to the pandemic, the USA received 79.4 million international visitors, which dropped to 19.2 million in 2020 to grow to 22.1 million in 2021.

EL SALVADOR TOURISM BOOSTED BY CHINESE COOPERATION Following agreements signed in 2019 between El Salvador and China, bilateral ties have strengthened and tourism in the Central American country has been boosted. Surf City La Libertad is a tourism development hub thanks to the collaboration and is one of several projects agreed between the two nations as a result of the agreement. Other investments for infrastructure in tourist areas include the restoration and expansion of the pier in the port of La Libertad, the remodelling of its surroundings and on the beaches of Surf City, one of the most attractive of El Salvador.

La Libertad, El Salvador

For Salvadorans, the Craft Dock and the Seafood Market area are symbolic places in the country due to the tourist boom and strong commercial movement that is generated as a result of fishing.

RUSSIA DEPARTS THE UNWTO On 10th June Russia formally left the World Tourism Organization, UNWTO. The Assembly were going to suspend its membership, not cancel it, but Russia pulled out before that decision was made official. The voluntary withdrawal from the UNWTO by Russia will materialise one year after they have presented the official communication.

Tallinn, Estonia

The Secretary General of the UNWTO, Zurab Pololikashvili, pointed out that 'tourism is a pillar of peace and international camaraderie and the members of the UNWTO must defend these values or face the consequences, without exceptions'. The council met at the request of member countries such as Colombia, Slovenia, Guatemala, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine, following the unilateral actions undertaken by Russia on Ukrainian territory.

ESTONIA FOCUSING TOURISM CAMPAIGN LOCALLY The Estonia Tourist Board has launched extensive tourism campaigns in all its nearest markets this year in a bid to restore tourism revenues. The campaigns focus on Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, each with a different message. THE PERFECT FLIGHT

At the start of any project, there is a wish list of everything you would like the end result to be. Almost always, somewhere along the process, compromises have to be made in one area or another. But what is that original wish list all came true? This would appear to be true with Bombardier’s new Global 8000 global jet. It ticks all the boxes and then gives you lots of perfect extras too! st

WORLD’S HISTORICAL FLIGHT DUBAI-TEL AVIV The historic Emirates flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv began recently with a Boeing 777 service connecting the two cities. A fanfare welcome greeted the flight as it landed. 335 passengers, including a number of media and high profile dignitaries from both countries were also on board. Emirates hopes that Israel will become one of its top 20 source markets and with new flights it will help push Israel further up that ranking. El Al and flydubai already link the two cities, but with Emirates now operating too, the two UAE airlines will offer 2,478 seats a week.

FRENCH BEE LAUNCHES NEW ROUTE FROM MIAMI French bee is a very competitively-priced long-haul carrier since arriving in the U.S. market with its San Francisco to Paris and Tahiti in 2018. Recently two new successful routes; Paris from Los Angeles and New York are now to include another new route from Miami. In addition, French bee has a partnership with Alaska Airlines for travellers outside of Miami to conveniently connect from various cities. It is the only smart-cost carrier with a full Airbus fleet featuring the A350-900 aircraft and an A350-1000 aircraft.

EUROPE AIRPORTS CHAOS With the strong resurgence of travel, many airports are just not able to manage or cope with demand on the ground, particularly but not exclusively at London’s Heathrow airport. The problem is hitting almost all airports across Europe. Recent reports have shown long queues and piles of luggage as systems crash. Due to increase demand, Heathrow said it was working closely with airlines and ground handlers to match supply and demand. Labour shortages and logistics problems have hit airports hard with many key entry airports into popular destinations facing issues, like in France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Germany, Poland, etc. A huge lack of workforce is being seen in almost every industry, but particularly in tourism, which was the most hard hit from the health crisis. Many people left the sector completely while others have not returned to the sector.

CATHAY PACIFIC RENEWS HK HUB

Cathay Pacific Airways plans to increase plane numbers at its Hong Kong hub as restrictions ease. The airline still has one third of its planes parked and unused. Since March 2020, it operated just 4% of its capacity and in May 2022 started to fill 60.5% of its seats as Hong Kong gradually reduced quarantine requirements. Cathay Pacific Airways has 45 passenger destinations in operation at present, up from 30 at the beginning of 2022 and plans for up to 70 by the end of 2022 as demand increases. 108 passenger destinations were operated prior to March 2020.

RUSSIAN AVIATION GOES IT ALONE Russia plans to invest UK£12 billion in the domestic aviation industry by 2030, boosting the share of locally-manufactured aircraft. This is partly in response to the West’s sanctions on the country and banning its airlines from flying in European and US airspace. As a result, Russian airlines have largely stopped international western flights. In addition, foreign plane manufacturers have stopped delivering new aircraft to Russia as well as spare parts of foreign-built planes are now in very short supply. The share of domestically produced aircraft in the fleet of Russian airlines will grow to 81% by 2030 and has already seen in creased local production. To date, only the Sukhoi Superjet regional aircraft is mass-produced inside Russia. It is preparing to mass produce the MS-21 mediumhaul aircraft, as well as to manufacture a small number of Soviet-designed Tu-214. By 2030 Russian airlines should have received over 1,000 locally built aircraft with Aeroflot purchasing 300 new planes.

The launch of private charter services will give Gulf Air’s clientele the ability to book direct charter flights to destinations off the airline’s normal route map, at times that suit their requirements. The Critical Period for Hotels & Tourism in

MYANMAR By K.J.

Bagan, Myanmar

Myanmar, southeast Asian nation of more than 100 ethnic groups, a total area of 678,500 square kilometres, is a beautiful country for tourists to witness a collection of diverse cultures and traditions that are woven together to form a captivating landscape of wonder. The country has fantastic mountains, mesmerising lakes, beautiful beaches and serene island. The UNESCO world heritage sites in Myanmar are broodingly majestic; the Pyu city -states that existed from c. 2nd century BCE to c. mid-11th century, Bagan which was formed in the 9th century. Most people in Myanmar, with pure hearts, are quite friendly to the foreign visitors, and willing to help them all the time. The significant people and places in Myanmar could attract a lot of interest from the people in the world.

However, the country was too narrow to enter according to the rulers’ controls and their political mess that always makes the country unstable. The deep impact of covid -19 on the hotel industry all over the world was the harsh reality, and Myanmar had to face it too, and the industry was paralysed for many months, right from the beginning in March 2020. And again in 2021, the February coup took place in Myanmar. The country is in chaos and the related sectors like hotels are disorganised and in the dark. Till now, with the breakout of COVID-19, tourism itself has been forced to performed negatively, where travel is associated with disease. Myanmar, moreover, is still performing a torrid civil war while a military coup against a civilian government has failed to achieve national unity and peace as promised. The unprecedented uprising of the Burmese people is still struggling for freedom. The exiled National Unity Government (NUG), People's Defence Armed Forces/ People’s Defence Force (PDF) and underground armed forces are battling with military regime. Travelling over the country is quite tight with several security checkpoints by the military, travellers would not be so comfortable even with the promotional strategy of the hotels, aiming to reach foreign visitors and local people too. Some hotels have transformed into a different theme like a KTV (Koraoke TV) centre where rooms are charged by the hour for people to sing in and meet girls.

Kandawgyi Lake, Yangon, Myanmar

Very few hotels, however, are still struggling in the right direction, but they still can’t afford many staff. A distressed story in Bagan tells us that a 200-room-hotel is running and operating with only 20 staff. The Burmese hotel industry is being crippled by more than one factor unlike other countries and has a very thin chance for survival. How would the Hotels and Tourism Ministry regulate its industry in this situation? It would be an enigma expanded during the critical period for hotels and tourism in Myanmar. According to the 2021 statistics of Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, there are 3,375 licensed tour companies and 2,269 hotels in Myanmar.
