FFF ENJOY AUTHENTIC AFRICAN BEER AT UKHAMBA BEERWORX. Cape Town’s first and only black owned craft brewery opened its doors in July this year. Ukhamba Beerworx is located in Woodstock at number 145 Sir Lowry Road.
FFF KWITA IZINA – RWANDA’S GORILLA NAMING CEREMONY The Kwita Izina ceremony takes place in Rwanda every year to name the newborn mountain gorillas. This year rare twin babies were born. The ceremony is a remarkable conservation of its natural world by the Rwanda government.
In the history of the Nguni people of Southern Africa like Xhosa, Zulu, Ndebele and Swazi, it was custom for tribesmen to gather in a circle sharing umqombothi (a traditional beer) from a clay pot called ukhamba. So when you are enjoying a beer with friends and strangers, you are celebrating the traditional legacy of the Nguni people. This is a tradition Ukhamba Beerworx wants to preserve.
FFF CROISIEUROPE will be expanding into Africa in December 2017 for the first time, with a new ship that will cruise exclusively on southern Africa’s Chobe and Zambezi rivers. It will include a four-day cruise on the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers followed by a stay at a luxury lodge and will end with a visit to Victoria Falls.

Officially declared a National Park in 1973, Liwonde covers a total area of 548km2 and is considered the most prolific wildlife area in Malawi. The Shire River – the country’s largest river and Lake Malawi’s only outlet – forms the Park’s western boundary and harbours a dense population of hippo, crocodiles and large numbers of elephant. Antelope such as impala, waterbuck, reedbuck and bushbuck are plentiful along the banks. In the east, relatively dry mopane woodlands are interspersed with candelabra trees, an area favoured by buffalo, yellow baboon and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest.Black Rhino were introduced from South Africa and can be found in the Sanctuary within the park. Predators include leopard, serval, side striped jackal and the recently introduced cheetah; lion are also occasionally seen.Nearly 400 bird species occur here, with specials such as Böhm’s Bee-eater, Livingstone’s Flycatcher, Pel’s Fishing-Owl, Lilian’s Lovebird and Brown-breasted Barbet.
ABOUT LIWONDE:
Liwonde National Park is famed as one of the country’s premier wildlife destinations, largely due to the fact that the Shire River makes it a magnet for wildlife. The River provides an essential lifeline to the flora and fauna that exists in Liwonde and is a focal point of safaris conducted within the park. Particularly in the drier months, it attracts large herds of elephant, antelope and an abundance of bird species. The 548km2park is named after Chief Liwonde who passionately championed its protection.

has a spectacular vantage point with stunning views of vast floodplains , riverine thicket, and the River. There is a bed under a mosquito net but open to the stars, a simple loo and shower and a dining table. A hand-held radio is also provided to contact the main Lodge team at any time. In the evenings, a turn-down service is completed by Lodge staff and all meals are served on the platform itself.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: 500 Elephants on the move: After months of extensive planning and preparation, African Park (the organization which manages Liwonde National Park in partnership with the Government of Malawi)recently translocated 500 elephants from Liwonde National Park to Nkotakota Wildlife Reserve. Termed ‘500 Elephants’, the initiative was the largest ever translocation of elephants to a single reserve and is one of the most significant translocation initiatives in conservation history. Central African Wilderness Safaris offered on-theground support to aid the teams working in the field where possible.
The return of cheetahs to Liwonde: In mid 2017, African Parks and the Endangered Wildlife Trust, also facilitated the translocation of four cheetahs from South Africa to Liwonde. This ground-breaking conservation initiative has proven to be a significant milestone in supporting the overall conservation efforts of this endangered species. It has also been a long-awaited opportunity for Malawi to revive its cheetah population. Over the last few months, guests at Mvuu Lodge and nearby Mvuu Camp have been able to enjoy regular sightings of cheetahs in the park. The CAWS Story:Central African Wilderness

C
ontemporary African art has a new home at Zeitz Mocaa at the V and A Waterfront in Cape Town South Africa. Jochen Zeitz a German entrepreneur who fell in love with Africa is the man behind Zeitz Mocaa while the architectural design was done by Thomas Heatherwick. The art gallery was opened on 22 September 2017.The opening event was well attended and the Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu who was one of the guest speakers was there to give his blessings to Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. The building that plays host to the world’s largest modern art gallery has been a part of Cape Town since the 1900’s.
This museum gives artists in Africa a platform to tell stories from around Africa through art. Speaking at the event the Emeritus Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu said “You young people. Here is your chance to become famous” With 9500 sq m the former grain silo building has a lot of space to make African art lovers spend hours exploring the art. There is no excuse for every African to not explore the art gallery as Wednesday mornings are free for all Africans from 10am to 1pm upon producing your ID or passport. Normal opening hours are from 10am to 6pm. Photo’s Credit: Carmen Visser
